Mayor Grant Miles thanked police for tackling the drug issues across the municipality. “The police deserve credit for their ongoing operations to disrupt drug-related issues,” Cr Miles said. “Suburbs such as Footscray have had a reputation in the past - but residents in Footscray have long known that perceptions of Footscray don’t always match reality and these latest statistics prove it. “The drop is good news for people living in Footscray and surrounding suburbs. “Our CCTV cameras installed in Footscray mall are making it easier for the police to deal with troublemakers.”

CRIME across the City of Maribyrnong has dropped by nearly 14 per cent in the past year – but is still significantly higher than the state and regional average. Victoria Police statistics for the 2012-13 financial year show the overall crime rate has dropped by 13.6 per cent over 12 months, with 10,229 crimes per 100,000 population. The figures show a 45.7 per cent fall in drug-related crime, a 21.2 per cent decrease in arson, a 20.7 per cent drop in car thefts, a 19.5 per cent decrease in rape and a 14 per cent fall in theft from motor vehicles. Despite the drop, the municipality’s crime rate is still 30 per cent higher than the state average, and 12.6 per cent higher than that of the North West Metropolitan region. Family incidents and family violence remain a significant safety issue for women and children, with an increase in such crimes reported. Over 2012-13, there was a 24 per cent increase in family incident reports, and a 50 per cent increase in the rate of charges being laid. “Perception of safety in our community satisfaction survey has always rated very highly (as a concern), and this council was very stra-

THE State Government will crack down on errant councillors with the announcement of stronger powers for the Local Government Inspectorate. The Chief Municipal Inspector will have the power to examine serious misconduct of councillors and hand down stronger penalties for councillors across Victoria that breach the Local Government Act 1989. The State Government will also add two new offences to the Local Government Act relating to breach of confidentiality and improper direction of council staff. These offences will carry penalties up to $17,323. The Inspectorate will continue to have the power to investigate possible breaches of the Act, such as misuse of position by a councillor, failure by a councillor to declare conflicts of interest, and failure by a councillor to lodge pecuniary interest returns. Meanwhile, councils will be required to adopt a code of conduct within four months of an election and to include a clear dispute resolution process and penalties for any breaches. “These reforms are being proposed because councillor conduct processes have been ineffective in some cases due to a lack of understanding of roles and responsibilities, a lack of commitment to the code of conduct principles and their enforcement,� Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said.

Cop going on gold A FOOTSCRAY police officer has clocked up 49 years on the job. Sergeant Ian Brown joined the police force in 1965 as a 16-yearold cadet and celebrated 49 years in the role earlier this month. “I knew several members of the police force who were at the time stationed up at St Albans, and I respected them - the way they behaved themselves - and I was lucky enough to be one of 30-odd of about 300 to get through,” Sgt Brown said.
“Forty-nine years is not about breaking records, I just want to do something to make a difference to the community. I still come to work every day and enjoy myself. I’ve always found in the police force a great camaraderie.” Over the past five decades, Sgt Brown has worked predominantly in the West, in both uniform and crime investigation areas including the Homicide Squad. He has received an Australian Police Medal, the 2013 Blue Ribbon Police Officer of the Year
Award and heaps of other internal and external commendations and awards. For the past nine years, Sgt Brown has been based at the Footscray police complex working as a supervisor in the Westgate Proactive Unit, where he oversees and works with the multicultural liaison, Youth Resource and Crime Prevention officers within the Westgate Division. “As a young fella, catching crooks was great, as was special duties and being a detective, but as
one gets a bit older, I think you look at the broader picture,” he said. “I look at the things you say in your oath of office - prevention and detection of crime - and I emphasise prevention before detection. If we can prevent crime, it’s better to do that than to catch the crooks. “I’ve found it to be a very challenging thing to ensure that the department provides the best quality crime prevention to the community. “I find the community out in the Western Suburbs fabulous. They’re great people out here.”
Sporting deal gives VU jump on the Vixens By CHARLENE MACAULAY IT WAS a Valentine’s Day pairing that has more than a sporting chance of success. Victoria University entered into a five-year sponsorship of Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens in the first partnership between an Australian university and an elite women’s sporting team. Bianca Chatfield, captain of the Melbourne Vixens and vice-captain of the Australian Diamonds, will be the official ambassador and public face of the partnership. VU Vice Chancellor Peter Dawkins said the sponsorship highlighted Victoria University’s evergrowing status as Australia’s Sports University. “This partnership with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens reinforces our commitment to women’s sport and our desire to offer opportunities for young sportswomen
to excel,” Prof Dawkins said. “Victoria University has a dedicated College of Sport and Exercise Science and sport is integrated into programs across the other University campuses. “We have the largest number of students enrolled in sport’s courses in Australia and world leading research facilities. “Opportunities for our students to work with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens will greatly enhance what we can offer. Graffiti blitz By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council wants to adopt a whole of West approach to scrub out the growing graffiti epidemic across the municipality. The council plans to get LeadWest, the Inner Melbourne Action Plan Implementation Committee and other stakeholders on board in an advocacy plan to deal with graffiti. The move comes after the council ran a four-month graffiti blitz and removed 12,614 square metres of graffiti from public and private property. The plan is expected by go before the council in April. Maribyrnong City Council has budgeted $130,500 for graffiti removal for the upcoming 2013/14 financial year, as well
as an added $11,000 for graffiti removal kits. The council’s Graffiti Management Strategy dictates that the council, through a contractor, should remove graffiti on council assets within 72 hours of notification; ensure the removal of any racist, obscene or offensive graffiti on any property in the municipality within 24 hours of notification; and request that property owners remove graffiti within five days of notification. Mayor Grant Miles said despite the blitz, councillors and the community were increasingly fed up with seeing graffiti scrawled across the municipality. “Illegal graffiti is a bad look for our city and the removal blitz has made our city look a
lot better,” Cr Miles said. “Although the blitz was a success, we acknowledge that it will not stop graffiti returning. Running a graffiti blitz and ongoing removal programs is expensive, so the council also needs to look at preventative measures to prevent graffiti from spreading in the first place. “Council’s long term plan to reduce graffiti is to engage with young people through public art pieces, and also work with regional stakeholders on the graffiti issue.” “The best way to help prevent graffiti is to remove it as soon as it appears.” The council offers free kits for removing graffiti on private property. Going crazy over cronuts MOVE over macarons. People all over the world are going crazy for cronuts - and keen bakers can learn to make their very own in Yarraville. Cronuts are croissant-style pastries that are fried in the shape of a donut, filled with cream and topped with glaze or icing sugar. The cronut was invented by New York Chef Dominique Ansel last year and accomplished baker Vy Cardona will be running two How to Make Cronuts classes at the Yarraville Community Centre next month. According to Ms Cardona, cronuts are on track to be the next big foodie thing in Australia. “It’s so addictive,” she said. “A lot of people still don’t understand what it is and how delicious it is. “It hasn’t really taken off yet over here. The focus is still on really healthy food as opposed to this, but I think it’s going to be huge.” Ms Cardona runs Mint on the Menu, a catering business that offers Vietnamese food and a range of baked goods for corporate and private events. Adult swimmers dive in By CHARLENE MACAULAY BILL Vasiliadis is taking to swimming like a duck to water. The Albion resident, who is in his late forties, started doing adult swimming classes just under a month ago at Paul Sadler Braybrook and is one of an increasing number of adults learning to swim later in life. Over the past few years, Paul Sadler Swimland staff has reported an increase in the popularity and need for adult learn to swim classes across their 12 sites. The business currently has more than 200 adults enrolled in swimming classes. Mr Vasiliadis said a combi-
nation of things had propelled him to take the plunge. “It’s a culmination of health and fitness and general wellbeing, and a bit about about water safety and confidence in the water,” he said. “Also, both my kids are learning to swim, and my young son - he’s eight at the moment - he’s getting ready to do his medal which involves him to swim a kilometre, so I thought I better be a good role model. “It was a good opportunity to show my kids too that you’re never too old to learn. You need to strive and learn new things all the time. “I’ve always been active in
sports and I’ve done a lot of fishing and snorkelling and I’ve been in water - but I’ve never formally been taught how to swim properly.” Mr Vasiliadis is in a class with three other adults and, just like regular swimming lessons, has had to start with the basics. “I’m even training with a little floatie to keep my arm out, we also put on our flotation belts and devices - we just need bigger ones. “We practically do the same things as the young kids. We stick our head under water, we practice blowing bubbles and then we concentrate on our strokes and finish off with a bit of diving.”

Cadet unit’s future leaders stepping up THE cadet program at Werribee Secondary College began in 2009 with students training with 32 Army Cadet Unit in Geelong. The unit commenced training at Werribee Secondary College in 2011 and was officially inaugurated by then Prime Minister Julia Gillard on 4 March 2012. It is one of only three Army Cadet Units in government schools in Victoria, the others being Melbourne High School and Sebastopol College. The unit reached its capacity of 60
male and female cadets last year. It is committed to community involvement and is a vital component of the Anzac Day March, the Dawn Service and the Remembrance Day commemoration in Werribee. The establishment of the cadet unit in the school has added a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and personal development. Cadets also gain a wide range of skills which are normally outside the general school curriculum. These in-
clude bush craft and field craft, navigation, radio communications, marksmanship, drill and ceremonial activities, historical and cultural awareness. The unit has quickly developed a reputation for excellence and has added to the already established tradition at Werribee Secondary College of producing officer candidates for the Australian Defence Force. In past years students at the school have won a number of prestigious Australian Defence Force Academy scholarships and this continued in 2013.

Braybrook College has a new Science Centre and Wood Technology Centre. ern equipment and facilities is evident. Aside from the recently remodelled music and VCE centres, the college has a new science centre and wood technology centre and last year the synthetic playing oval was completed. Additionally, the college has prioritised ICT and extensive computer equipment and laptops are available for student use. The college is proud to say that all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2014 will have their personal companion Acer laptop learning device. Other students will be able to access the fleet of laptops for all classroom activities. Much of this new laptop equipment has become available due to the Federal Govern-
ment injection of funds under the National Secondary Schools Computer Program. In addition, National Partnership funds have enabled the school to employ more teachers, begin the iPod trial at year eight, and create the Information Literacy Centre in the college library. Teachers and students also have wide access to electronic data projectors and/or interactive whiteboards installed in all rooms throughout the college. There are specialised areas for art and craft, home economics and textiles. Family roots run deep in Little River
Hannah and Harry come from a long line of Little River Primary school alumni. 114839
MOST country towns have families who have lived in the district for many years. Harold (Harry) and Hannah are fortunate enough to be descendants of the Richmond family who have been in Little River for many years, five generations, in fact. Harry and Hannah’s great, greatgrandfather attended school at the Wurdi Yuang Primary School in the You Yangs. This was the school that was later to become Little River Primary School many years later.
Harry and Hannah’s great-grandfather Thomas Colin Richmond also attended school at Wurdi Yuang Thomas grew up and lived his life in Little River where he farmed on the Richmond family property in Edgars Rd. Thomas served as a councillor on Wyndham City Council for six years. Harry and Hannah’s grandfather Neil Richmond also attended school at Little River Primary School. By this time the school had relo-
cated from the You Yangs and had changed its name to Little River Primary School. Some years later when Neil Richmond became a parent he served on the school council. He still resides in Little River where he has farmed all his life and now regularly attends functions at the school as a proud grandparent. Harry and Hannah’s mother Susan Bufton was the fourth generation Richmond descendant to attend Little River Primary School in the early 1970s and following in her
father’s footsteps she is a current school councillor and a very happy parent of her two children. Harry and Hannah are very proud to be part of a family that has such a long association with a wonderful country school where learning is important and life-long friendships are made. STUDENTS and staff were welcomed back from the holidays with a new administration building creating a vibrant new entrance to Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. The building is just one of many improvements at the college over the past 12 months which provide an attractive and engaging learning atmosphere. Upgrades include extensive landscaping, resurfacing of basketball courts and construction of new tennis courts. All classrooms have been fitted with interactive technologies, allowing teaching staff to provide an engaging and differentiated curriculum to suit the needs of all students. The upgrades complement the $2 million Science Centre which was officially opened by then Prime

The college offers a diverse range of pathway options including VCE, VCAL and VET studies as well as the Enhanced Learning Pathway that provides access to university enhancement studies in VCE. This diversity allows students to be successful and reach their full potential. Leadership opportunities are accessible to all students through a strong student representative council. The student leadership and voice co-ordinator ensures every opportunity is given to develop leadership skills beyond the classroom. In-
volvement in Wynspeak, the Youth Parliament forum and the United Nations Human Rights Convention are just some opportunities on offer. Global citizenship is also fostered at the college through international programs such as the Sister City Exchange Program with Estancia High School (California), Language Immersion Program (Italy) and Overseas Learning Experience (China). Brunch is served I’m always excited to receive recipes from readers, especially if they come with a good back story! So my sincere thanks to Food Bytes reader James Gyore from Altona for his quick and easy brunch recipe, which I’m featuring this week – tomato, cheese and herb tart. James says “I must confide that I’m dreadful. I invite people over with no regard for the state of the house or for what is or is not in the fridge, freezer and pantry. Time and time again, with great enthusiasm, I invite friends and family to brunch with little thought given to what I might feed them. The lawns needs mowing, the garden beds need weeding, there is a pile of washing that I’m trying to ignore, and being a handy-man, I still have not taken a look at the dryer which has been making odd noises for a few months now. But, it’s the weekend, and I very much look forward to seeing those I love, however infrequently. We’re all overworked, overcommitted and too busy for each other most of the time. So to hell with the chores, it’s the weekend, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen my friends and family. In my defence, with years of training and domestication, I do now have a collection of quick and easy go-to recipes for those occasions when friends and family are invited over to while away the late morning.”
TOMATO, HERB AND CHEESE TART: 1 sheet puff pastry 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 6 tomatoes, sliced 1 small red onion, halved and then sliced 1 tub Bocconcini cheese Salt and cracked pepper to taste Basil to garnish Pre-heat oven to 180C. Lay out the puff pastry on a baking tray. Sprinkle parmesan cheese over pastry. Top with sliced tomatoes and onion. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until pastry is crispy and tomatoes hot. Tear up the Bocconcini with fingers and distribute evenly over the tart. Finely chop basil to garnish, before serving. Note: the number of tomatoes needed to cover the sheet of pastry may vary. Bulldogs impress By LIAM TWOMEY ANOTHER impressive batting display from Travis Dean has lifted Footscray Edgewater to a strong position after day one of its clash against the Camberwell Magpies in the Victorian Premier Cricket. The Bulldogs won the toss and batted first at the Camberwell Sports Ground and it was Dean Russ and Anthony Barton who kicked things off in the middle. The pair added 32 for the first wicket before Barton was dismissed for 19. That brought Dean to the crease with the middle order batsman’s confidence sky high after a brilliant century the match before against Dandenong. Despite a few wickets falling around him, Dean was never flustered as he again looked right at home in the middle. He went on to make 95 before being bowled by Matthew Whittaker. The score came off 231 balls and his 14 boundaries put the Bulldogs in the box seat. Dean was well supported by Russ, who made 49, while Sunam Gautam contributed 30 after coming in late in the innings. After 85 overs, Footscray
finished at 7/230 with Jake Haberfield and Hamish Winter-Irving the not out batsmen. As well as getting the big wicket of Dean, Whittaker was the pick of the Camberwell bowlers and finished with figures of 3/34. William Walker was the only other multiple wicket taker as he snared 2/37. When day two of the clash resumes on Saturday, the Magpies will need to chase down 231 if they are to claim their 10th win of the season. “I was really happy with the way the boys fought,” Footscray captain Dean Russ said. “The conditions were a bit tougher than expected. With the cloud cover coming over, it didn’t allow the wicket to dry out and the ball really swung around all day. “It was a pretty tough day and a very good game of cricket all round. “Travis was fantastic. It was tough going and for him to be able to work through that and be able to score 95 was fantastic. He deserved five more runs. That allowed us to get to a total where we are in a pretty good position.” A win this week will ensure the Bulldogs remain in the top two on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder.

shorts Love leads the way YARRAVILLE secured one of its best wins of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season following a brilliant run chase against Altona on Saturday. After batting first on day one, the A’s posted 217 on the back of a blistering 111 from Aaron Maynard. However, Yarraville’s Matthew Love set about evening the score on day two. Love made an equally brilliant 104 not out to guide the Eagles to victory in the final over of the day. He was well supported by Curtis Maguire who made 39 at the top of the order while Yarraville captain Alex Hewet contributed 21. For Altona, Lee Elmore and Peter Herrick were the only multiple wicket takers and finished with two each. The win is Yarraville’s third of the season and lifts the Eagles to 11th spot on the VSDCA ladder. A win for Altona could have secured the A’s a finals berth. In other results, Melton defeated Sunshine by five wickets.

Clubs on roll with cultural mix By LIAM TWOMEY LAWN bowls clubs may be on the verge of attracting a new playing and fan base after an initiative started in Melbourne’s Western Suburbs. Through a partnership between Bowls Australia, Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) and the Western Bulldogs Football Club, migrants and refugees in the West are being encouraged to get on the greens and have a roll. The trio have also organised for 150 AMES members to attend this week’s Australian Open at the Darebin International Sports Centre. “We realigned our philosophy around the Australian Open to make it a more community based event this year,” Bowls Australia communications and marketing manager Andrew Holmes said. “We wanted to expose bowls to new audiences and people who are unfamiliar with the sport of bowls. “The people attending are basically all new arrivals or refugees from other countries and we have invited them to come to the Australian Open which is great,” Holmes said. As well as seeing some of the game’s elite lawn bowlers in action, the group will also be taken through a training session so they can start

“We are going to give them an afternoon of education about the sport of bowls. We will go through all the rules and give them a chance to have a roll up on the greens and meet some players and just be exposed to a new sport.” The Australian Open is the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest and most lucrative bowls event. This
year the tournament will feature singles, pairs and fours for both men and women, as well as events for specific age groups and bowlers with a disability. Anyone wishing to find out more information about becoming involved in lawn bowls through the AMES partnership is encouraged to contact Bowls Australia.
PLAY resumed in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf division after hot weather ruled out all competition last weekend. On Saturday, West Newport was the big winner in the division, securing its place in the finals series after knocking off Williamstown Imperials in a one-dayer at Loft Reserve. The Imps were bowled out for 149 three balls short of the end of the opening innings before West Newport dominated with the bat in its chase. Ross Cassidy (56 not out), Josh Eason-Jones (44) and Peter Hick (37 not out) were all handy in the middle as West Newport got its target with relative ease, reaching 1/150 by the end of the 35th over. The Imps are now out of the finals race, while West Newport now sits fourth with a chance of snatching second spot in the final fortnight of the home-and-away season. Williamstown Colts was also a big winner on Saturday, beating Grand United by 50 runs in their top-of-the-table clash at Parsons Reserve. WERRIBEE City’s impressive rise through the ranks of Victorian soccer is finally complete, with the Bees confirmed to start in the state’s top flight competition next month. The former State League One club, coached by Nino Ragusa, was last week accepted by Football Federation Victoria into the newly-formed National Premier Leagues Victoria competition - due to commence in mid-March. Werribee City is the only NPL club from Wyndham and one of five clubs taking part from Melbourne’s West, with Brimbank participants Melbourne Knights, Green Gully, Sunshine George Cross and St Albans all accepted into one of the two new leagues. The promotion and relegation system between the NPL and NPL1 will be confirmed next week, along with the final fixtures for both the senior men’s and under-20s competitions. The winner of the Victorian NPL will play the Tasmanian NPL champion after the 26-round season. Werribee City will also participate in a number of NPL junior competitions - set to commence in early April. AFL VICTORIA has launched a regional search for the most talented Indigenous and multicultural footballers in the state. The Kickstart and All Nations initiatives give under-15 footballers from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds an opportunity to fast track their football development through a highly enjoyable on and off field program. To be eligible for the All Nations Cup Squad, players must have been born overseas or come from a non-english speaking background. Players who impress with their skills and character at the regional trials will be invited to a high performance camp in April and could possibly win selection for the respective teams and compete at the National Indigenous and Multicultural Carnival in Coffs Harbour from 11-17 April. Tryouts for Indigenous and multicultural footballers will be held at Visy Park on Friday 21 February from 5pm until 7pm.

Sport THERE is a superstition in football circles that when a club changes coach, they will win the next time they play. But what is going to happen in round one of the Western Region Football League season when eight new Division One coaches start barking orders for the first time? With so many new faces, LIAM TWOMEY takes a look at some of the biggest talking points about the new crop of leaders.
Eight talking points for eight coaching changes Who is the most high profile new coach? IT is hard to look past Steve Kretiuk when it comes to experience at the top level. Kretiuk built a reputation as a tough as nails defender for Footscray between 1992 and 2003. After his career finished, he remained in AFL circles and coached the Western Jets for five years, helping a number of the West’s top talent make it to the AFL. Before taking on the top job at Hoppers Crossing, Kretiuk was also delivering opposition analysis for the Brisbane Lions.
Who are the familiar faces? This won’t be Marcus Barclay’s first stint in coaching a WRFL Division One club. Barclay was in charge at Albion in 2011 when the club finished the season on top of the ladder. The Cats went on to lose the Division One grand final to Spotswood. Shortly after, Barclay was replaced as Albion head coach by Mark Greenshields. Meanwhile, Jesse Smith joins Yarraville after a successful stint as a development coach at Sunshine.
Who are the favourite sons? For Aaron Tymms (Albion), Josh Russo (Altona) and Tom Langlands (Spotswood), their appointments only further strengthen a rich history that each has with their respective club. The Langlands name is synonymous with Spotswood. Tom played for the Woodsmen as a junior and his father Gavin is a WRFL life-member. Furthermore, his brother Will is the only player to have played in all seven of Spotswood’s grand final appearances from 2007 to 2013. Tymms celebrated his 400th WRFL match last year and captained Albion to its premiership win in 2010. Russo was also a premiership captain with the Vikings in what was the club’s first Division One flag.
Who has been busy already? With the season just six weeks away, recruiting and list management decisions have come thick and fast. Deer Park has farewelled league bestand-fairest winner Shannon Broadbent to the Goulburn Valley Football League. Travis Lunardi has moved from Altona to the Essendon District Football League. Former Hoppers Crossing captain Brad Murphy will coach the Melton Bloods. On the incoming list, Kretiuk has ensured that Hoppers Crossing will be tough to beat at the stoppages with former AFL ruckman Wayde Skipper joining the club. Last year’s Division Two best-and-fairest winner at Sanctuary Lakes Jessi Lampi has joined Yarraville. Lampi will line up with former Western Jet Daniel Burton. Over the bridge, Danny Jacobs will pull on the jumper for Port Melbourne under Jason Love.

Who kept their jobs? It is no surprise Marc Bullen was one of the two coaches to remain in his position after the 2013 season. In his first year in charge at Deer Park, Bullen took the Lions all the way to a premiership. But that could be just the start of the successful times at Deer Park with former AFL trio Brent Guerra, Bret Thornton and Ryan Hargrave joining the star-studded side. As one of the biggest improvers in 2013, Brett Jacobs will return to Sunshine hoping to build on the ground made last year. The Kangaroos jumped from fifth to third on the WRFL ladder and Jacobs was named the Division One Coach of the Year.
Who could be coaching a premiership? With great power comes great responsibility and with great expectations can come great reward. For Barclay and Langlands, that reward could be a premiership cup. Both new coaches are taking over teams that made the Division One finals last year, with St Albans knocked out in week one by Altona and Spotswood suffering its second onepoint loss on grand final day in two years. While the pressure to be at the top end of the ladder may be greater on Barclay and Langlands than their counterparts, the rewards could be well worth it. What about Division Two? The influx of new coaches wasn’t just exclusive to Division One clubs this off-season. There were also plenty of changes among Division Two clubs as the move into a three-division system approaches. The new batch of Division Two coaches are: Adam Borg and John Thrush (Albanvale), Michael Shepperbottom (Braybrook), Paul Growcott (Caroline Springs) Rick Munn (Sunshine Heights), Stuart Daly (Glen Orden), Shaun Borlase and Matthew Welsh (North Footscray), Trevor Davies (West Footscray), Daniel Mitchell (Tarneit) and Joe Larizza (North Sunshine).

What can be expected from Werribee Districts? After crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Wade Chapman takes the reigns at a Werribee Districts outfit that has bypassed Division Two and will go toe-to-toe with the best the league has to offer. In coming from the VAFA, the Tigers are a bit of an unknown heading into the 2014 season however, one thing is for sure, Werribee has been busy. Footscray VFL player Brent Prismall will play at Soldiers Reserve when his VFL commitments allow and former Werribee VFL best-and-fairest winner Ben Sharp is another marquee signing. The club has also welcomed back a number of former players including Tate and Shaun McCutcheon as well as Brent Morrow.

Falcons in best form By LIAM TWOMEY CITY West Falcons claimed the battle of the West in round one of the Victorian Netball League last week. The Falcons smashed VU Western Lightning by 18 goals to get their VNL championship title defence off to the perfect start. City West looked strong from the opening centre pass, scoring 14 goals in the first quarter to build an eight-goal lead. With their backs to the wall, the Lightning tried to rebound and closed the gap to 10 at the main break. However, in the second half, the Falcons kicked into another gear and secured the 52-34 win. “They thoroughly deserved their win,” VU Western Lightning coach Matt Hills said. “They were much better drilled than us and won many more positions all over the court. “I’ve got to give credit to Casey Price (goal defence) and Emily Mannix (goal keeper). Breaking the footy mould GRASSROOTS football continues to lead the way in breaking the male dominated world of Aussie Rules football with more examples this week in the WRFL. Meredith Anguin was appointed to the WRFL board and Sue Thornton announced as president of the new Tarneit Titans Football Club. Meredith brings a wealth of international business experience to the board and a family history with local football. Her late father Ron was president of the league for 11 years and her mother Thelma was treasurer for a decade. Both her parents are life-members of the league. Sue has been actively involved at Hoppers Crossing acting in a variety of roles including time keeper, trainer, team manager and administrator. She faces a huge task with the Titans making their debut in just a few weeks. I wish both ladies all the best and hope to see more in the future.

The most important thing to remember is to maintain correct tyre pressure to ensure good performance and safety. Why is maintaining the right tyre pressure important? Underinflated tyres wear out faster as they can overheat, have increased rolling resistance and can require more fuel to maintain the speed.
Over-inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling on the road. Both over and under-inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly. Correct tyre pressures help to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This can have a direct impact
on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. National Tyres can help provide information on the recommended tyre pressure for vehicles. Things to remember: Use an accurate tyre pressure gauge, don’t just look at the tyre - appearances can be deceiving.

Check the spare and ensure that the spare is serviceable and roadworthy. Tyre pressures should be checked roughly every two to four weeks. It is normal for tyres to slowly lose air over time. Tyre pressures should be checked and set when the tyres are cold not after a long road trip because heat will temporarily raise the pressure. The correct tyre pressure for the vehicle should be listed in the vehicle handbook that is usually kept in the glove box. Too much or too little pressure can be dangerous. Tyre failure at high speeds can have tragic consequences. Any sort of damage on a tyre should be inspected by a specialist. Although the minimum tread pattern depth is 1mm or 2/32 of an inch, it is recommended that tyres are replaced before they become that worn.
