A FAMILY has been inspired to raise more than $100,000 for charity since their young daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Isabella Curra, now aged 13, was diagnosed with type one juvenile diabetes in 2010. Her loving family and friends dubbed themselves Team Bella and rallied around to hold a fundraising car and bike show for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in 2011 at Bundoora Park, when another tragedy struck. Isabella’s father, Tony, began to experience difficulty walking and was di-
agnosed with aggressive multiple sclerosis (MS). Since them, Team Bella has also devoted their fundraising efforts to the MS Research Foundation. After outgrowing their Bundoora Park venue, their next fundraising Family Car and Bike Show will be held Sunday 2 March at the Calder Park Raceway. Isabella’s mother - and Tony’s wife - Sophie Curra said they expected more than 500 vehicles to enter the event. Among the cars on show will be a X4GT 1971 and HGPREM 1970, owned by family friends Rob and Maria DeBerardinis and Joe and Joanna Calabretts,
who hail from Caroline Springs and Greenvale. Ms Curra has selflessly devoted herself to organising the fund-raising events, ever since Isabella’s diagnosis. “We’ve raised over $100,000 so far,” Ms Curra said. “Basically it’s for the whole family and friends to get together, we like to share our cars and have a good day out.” While Isabella has to check her blood sugar level more than six times a day and cannot exercise for long periods of time, she leads the same life as any teenage girl. “What I want for her is to be a nice, strong, independent woman and not let
anything worry her,” Ms Curra said. “My advice to people is to live life every day. “It won’t do you any good to become a depressed person.” The Family Car and Bike Show will be on Sunday 2 March at the Calder Park Raceway from 9am to 4pm at 377 Calder Freeway, Calder Park, featuring food and trade stalls, live music, hair braiding, face painting, amusement rides, farm animal and pony rides, show bags, trophies, raffles and auctions. Gold coin donation for public entry, public parking $10. Contact: teambella@hotmail.com

A sketch of ‘Man Lifting a Cow’ as displayed in the Art Gallery of NSW. Brimbank City Council hopes to install a bronze sculpture version of the artwork in Sunshine. 114774 Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Cow commission an udder triumph By ALESHA CAPONE A SCULPTURE of a man lifting a cow could soon be installed in Sunshine, as Brimbank City Council looks to beef up its arts credentials - although revealing the artwork’s price to the public has been mooted. At last week’s council meeting, the area’s administrators John Watson and Jane Nathan revealed plans to commission an artwork called ‘Man Lifting a Cow’ for Sunshine’s CBD. The bronze statue would be made by well-known sculptor John Kelly, who grew up in Sunshine and has gone on to achieve international fame with
his bovine artworks. The council’s agenda said the sculpture of ‘Man Lifting a Cow’ has been offered to Brimbank at a “substantially reduced, special commission price” which would not be disclosed for commercial-in-confidence reasons. However, the council will apply to the State Government’s Public Sculpture Fund, which gives out grants of up to $100,000, to help purchase the artwork. The council will also pursue philanthropic trusts to help pay for the Sunshine statue. If the council is successful in commissioning the artwork, it
will be the third in a particular cow-themed series created by Mr Kelly. One of Mr Kelly’s other pieces, titled called ‘Cow Up a Tree’, stands in Docklands while similar artworks have been exhibited in Paris and London. Mr Watson said having the cow monument in Sunshine would help establish Brimbank’s reputation as the “centre of artistic creativity in Melbourne’s West”. He said the sculpture would most likely be erected on Hampshire Rd adjacent to the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.

Tap-driven theft By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK police have warned motorists not to leave valuables in their cars, after a rise in frauds committed with ‘tap and go’ bankcards stolen from vehicles. Acting Detective Sergeant Isaac Papadopoulos, from the Brimbank Vehicle Crime Task Force, said police had noticed a rise in credit card frauds in relation to ‘tap and go’ cards. “Victims are leaving their personal belonging in cars, and offenders are using their tap and go cards
to commit a large number of frauds in the area,” Acting Det Sgt Papadopoulos said. Tap and go bank cards do not require a pin number or signature, only for users ‘tap’ them again against an EPTPOS machine. “Drivers might never have cash in their wallet, but with a tap and go card which has a limit of $1000, that is like having $1000 cash,” Acting Det Sgt Papadopoulos said. “The message I’m trying to get out is for people to take their personal belongings with them - lesson 101
is don’t leave valuables in the car.” Acting Det Sgt Papadopoulos said offenders who stole tap and go cards usually attempted to purchase many items, such as cigarettes and objects which can be re-sold, in a short amount of time. “It’s like a marathon, they run from shop to shop to use as much as they can before the person notices and cancels the card,” he said. “As soon as they get it, it’s like a race. From one theft you can get eight frauds.” “There’s been a great rise in
these and as a result our frauds are going up, up, up every month.” Acting Det Sgt Papadopoulos said there had also been a ‘moderate’ increase of seven per cent in thefts from vehicles at Watergardens and Deer Park railway stations in the past month. He advised drivers to always remove belongings from their cars because the thieves have been targeting vehicles with items visible from the windows. He also urged anyone who witnesses suspicious activity in car parks to contact triple-zero.
Pho Fever reaches unbelievable high By ALESHA CAPONE Phuong Nguyen from Thuan An restaurant is excited to be taking part in the Sunshine Pho Fever event as part of this year’s Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. 114575 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
THE food on offer will be pho-nomenal, when Pho Fever arrives in Sunshine next month. After a successful debut last year, the Sunshine Business Association will again host the event as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival from Monday 10 March to Thursday 13 March. The Vietnamese noodle soup dish will be on offer during a ‘restaurant-hop’ which seven Hampshire Rd businesses will take part in, including the Thuan An Vietnamese-Chinese Restaurant, Nhi Nuong (Two Sisters), Sao Café, Pho Hien Saigon, Queen’s Rose The Sun, Bo Ba Tea and Pho Lau Kim Long. Julie and Phuong Nguyen from Thuan An have run their family business for almost six years and know how to create delicious dishes including tomato rice with diced beef, coconut prawns and laksas, alongside their trademark pho. “Our secret here is the chef has to put in aromatic spices and ingredients at the exact right time or else it doesn’t taste right or the soup comes out darker,” Ms Nguyen said. However, Ms Nguyen said the restaurant was happy to change food orders if requested - such as adding vegetables to the pho, rather than the more traditional ingredients, for people on a diet. “With pho, some of our Western customers would rather have it with egg noodles rather than rice noodles,” she said. Ms Nguyen said many residents in the West came from a Vietnamese background and enjoyed sharing their culture. “We want people to know about the Vietnamese culture, so if the people want to learn about it they can come here and eat the food and gain some knowledge,” she said. Tickets for Sunshine Pho Fever are now on sale and are $45 per person, and must be made via credit for the non-vegetarian event. Visit: www.sunshinebusiness.org/phofever.

Leading by example By ALESHA CAPONE A COMMUNITY-SPIRITED young woman, Van Ritchie, has encouraged her fellow residents to take part in a leadership program offered through Brimbank City Council. Ms Ritchie recently completed the Community Leadership Program, which is set to run again this year. “I had moved to Brimbank not long ago and I had worked in the city for so long, that one of the decisions I made when I moved to Sunshine was that I wanted to be an active member of the community,” Ms Ritchie said.
“I think what I loved most about it was there was a great deal of love, pride and respect for the area in which we live. Ms Ritchie said the program taught participants about planning and running projects, community centres, the council, communication and teamwork. She said people from many different backgrounds and occupations take part in the course and she has encouraged other residents, especially younger ones, to take part of this year’s program. “I would say it’s for everyone
really,” she said. “It is about taking that leap to do it and once you do it, you will see it’s for everyone. “I think the only requirement you need to do the course is to have a care factor for Brimbank.” Ms Ritchie also volunteers as a tutor at the West Sunshine Community Centre, teaching children to cook and bake. “I feel privileged to be given the chance to volunteer,” she said. Ms Ritchie thanked Brimbank City Council for giving her the opportunity to take part in the community education program.
The 2014 Deer Park and St Albans Community Leadership Program will start 6pm Thursday 13 March at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre. The Sunshine Community Leadership Program will begin 6pm Tuesday 3 June at the VU Sunshine Convention Centre. The Sydenham and Keilor Community Leadership Program will be on 10.30am Monday 1 September at the Sydenham Neighbourhood House. See www.brimbank.vic.gov.au for more information.

Stink raised over smells THE EPA is investigating two businesses after receiving complaints from Caroline Springs residents about bad smells. Environment Protection Authority officers have visited Boral Deer Park and Pinegro as part of ongoing investigations into the problem. An EPA spokesperson said a number of potential odour sources were identified at the sites. The spokesperson said the EPA is working with the businesses to find solutions to the potential issues and will issue formal notices reflecting the agreed actions. Caroline Springs couple Steve and Christiana said they have noticed a
“stench” in the last few months, but said it is not on a regular basis. “I don’t know what it is but it must be the winds direction pushing it towards us” Christiana told Star. “It’s not on a daily basis - sometimes it is. But it’s horrid.” The EPA spokesperson assured residents that while the Boral Deer Park and Pinegro sites may be contributing to the odour experienced by residents, they will continue to monitor the situation to identify other possible sources. The EPA encouraged residents to continue to be aware of the situation and said it would rely on the community to help gauge the effectiveness of the solutions.
Councillor crackdown By CHARLENE MACAULAY

A load of rubbish proves costly By ALESHA CAPONE BRIMBANK ratepayers are footing an $800,000 bill every year to clean up after illegal rubbish dumpers. Brimbank City Council’s city development director Stuart Menzies said illegal littering posed a “significant cost to the community”. “Council spends approximately $800,000 cleaning up litter and dumped rubbish across the municipality each year,” Mr Menzies said. In addition, the council has issued more than 90 fines to property owners for keeping land in an unsightly or dangerous condition across the past 12 months. “A further 279 infringement were issued for persons failing to comply with a notice issued, the majority of these related to a failure to complete
requested clean-up works,” Mr Menzies said. “Eight fines were issued for littering offences, which include rubbish dumping. “Due to the illegal nature of rubbish dumping any secluded or out of the way area seems to attract this activity.” Mr Menzies said the most common items dumped within Brimbank included mattresses, tyres, garden refuse and household waste. “Due to the recent change to a digital TV signal there has been a rise in the dumping of old TVs,” he said. “Residents are reminded that TVs can be taken to the facility in Stadium Drive, Keilor to be dropped off for recycling.” Mr Menzies said council officers
regularly patrolled public areas for cleaning and have focused on particular areas - such as Sunshine North and Brooklyn - in recent times. Mr Menzies said the council’s ‘Detox Your Home Centre’ in Keilor offered an ‘no charge’ drop off for the following range of products including all types of batteries, fluorescent tubes, paint and motor oil (up to 10 litres per person), gas cylinders, televisions and computer monitors, computers, hard drives, printers, faxes, keyboards and modems. “Council encourages community members to nominate sites as part of the Clean Up Australia Day initiative as well as providing support,” Mr Menzies said. The annual Clean Up Australia Day will be on Sunday 2 March. See www. cleanup.org.au/au for more information.
THE State Government will crack down on errant councillors with the announcement of stronger powers for the Local Government Inspectorate. The Chief Municipal Inspector will have the power to examine serious misconduct of councillors and hand down stronger penalties for councillors across Victoria that breach the Local Government Act 1989. The State Government will also add two new offences to the Local Government Act relating to breach of confidentiality and improper direction of council staff. These offences will carry penalties up to $17,323. The Inspectorate will continue to have the power to investigate possible breaches of the Act, such as misuse of position by a councillor, failure by a councillor to declare conflicts of interest, and failure by a councillor to lodge pecuniary interest returns. Meanwhile, councils will be required to adopt a code of conduct within four months of an election and to include a clear dispute resolution process and penalties for any breaches. “These reforms are being proposed
1055179-47-12
because councillor conduct processes have been ineffective in some cases due to a lack of understanding of roles and responsibilities, a lack of commitment to the code of conduct principles and their enforcement,” Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said. Under the proposed reforms, panels that hear internal council complaints will have the power to deal with serious misconduct and if warranted suspend a councillor for up to six months. The move comes less than a month after the State Government announced it would draft legislation that would allow mayors the power to suspend misbehaving councillors on a three strikes and you’re out policy. “Victorians should know that they can trust their elected local council representatives and trust that a rigorous framework is in place to deal appropriately with any breaches of the Act,” Ms Powell said. “These new and stronger powers for the Inspectorate send a clear message to current and future councillors that they must be beyond reproach when representing their communities.” The new legislation is expected to be introduced into Parliament in the first half of this year.

Jason Neicho, with his sons Dylan and Jye, has created the popular ‘Deer Park I lived Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI there’ Facebook page. 114223
By ALESHA CAPONE JASON Neicho has helped to reconnect thousands of Deer Park residents both past and present through a Facebook page which celebrates the suburb. Mr Neicho started the Deer Park I Lived There group on the social networking website after being inspired by a similar page devoted to Braybrook. “I said to my mate that I was going to do it and he just laughed,” Mr Neicho said. “He said ’you will be lucky to get 90 members’.” However, the group’s popularity has skyrocketed with more than 2380 people joining.
“It’s just everyone reliving their childhood and connecting with people they haven’t seen for 20 or 30 years,” Mr Neicho said. “It’s great to get them all connected. “They put up photos of where people used to hang around when they were young and school photos, and there is also a section in memorium of people from the area who have died.” Mr Neicho said he lived in Deer Park for most of his life and has seen the area change across the decades. “It’s changed. Station Rd used to be two lanes and now
it’s four lanes,” he said. “On the Facebook site, there’s a black and white photo of the Deer Park Shopping Centre in the 1960s when it was all dirt roads and camels.” The site has become so popular that some of its members are gathering for a reunion on 24 May. The event will be on at the Deer Park Football Club at 2pm with a band and barbecue. Tickets $25, pay for own food and drinks. Attendees must prurchase tickets by contacting Bindi on 0412 761 042, Suzzi on 0421 761 042 or Sharyn on 0400 340 870.

DJ FABIAN Gray is accustomed to being recognised at the Watergardens Town Centre. The Taylors Lakes resident, a well-known Melbourne DJ, said he gets stopped “a fair bit” at the centre. “Funny story, I once went to Watergardens to have a feed and had just finished a hard gym session, out of nowhere these kids come up to me wanting photos,” Mr Gray said. “Deep down I felt out of place and a bit under dressed. “I was not happy about the way I looked, a little too casual and not camera material, but end of the day, I took nine pho-
tos with nine kids. It’s all about the fans.” Mr Gray, who will appear at the Future Music Festival later this year, recently had a hit with the Lowkiss Mix if his track ‘Sandstorm’ which reached number 16 on the Aria Club Chart. Mr Gray will also play at the Streat Vibes Music Festival at Watergardens which will be on 1 and 2 March. “I am actually excited to be playing in my hometown,” Mr Gray said. “It’s an amazing feeling to be appreciated as an artist by my local community and the support helps drive my creativity.
“Because I’ll be playing the last set at the event, I am going to pump it up a bit with some slamming electro and big room tracks,” he said. “Got a few new releases of mine that I am keen to play for the first time to my home crowd.” “The most enjoyable feeling, I find with what I do, would have to be that feeling you get playing to all these crowds and knowing that one of your productions is making the crowd dance.” Also appearing at Streat Vibes will be Justice Crew and Reece Mastin. College calls on core values CATHOLIC Regional College is a year seven to 10 coeducational college which is underpinned by the core values of faith, resilience, compassion and respect. The college offers a diverse curriculum and extra-curricular activities for more than 600 students, yet it is small enough for students to be known individually by staff. It has a strong student wellbeing focus and works in partnership with parents and students to provide a safe and connected community, based on well-established preventative student wellbeing policies and strategies. There are many opportunities for students to demonstrate personal skills in leadership, social justice and peer support. The college offers innovative programs which are aimed at enhancing the educational opportunities and engagement of students. A 21st century curriculum and learning environment is enhanced by a laptop program, year seven to nine, and an iPad program in Year 10. BRAYBROOK College is a proudly multicultural, single campus school with a strong academic reputation offering extensive programs from Years seven to 12. Its underpinning philosophy is that students should have opportunities to develop their skills to the optimum level. Students are supported across a broad range of areas and the more talented students have the opportunity to be selected for one of the advanced classes. The college is the ideal size to provide the programs required to meet the varied needs of students. These include academic opportunities which will take students on to university courses or vocational educational training, music and instrumental music through to Year 12, extensive sports and outdoor education programs along with a support structure that encourages students to strive for individual excellence. This breadth of opportunity has resulted in some outstanding results in recent years. Clearly the individual attention and tuition that Braybrook College provides to students, especially in the senior years, results in excellent outcomes including a full range of postsecondary options. While focusing on the learning outcomes for students, the school’s push to provide mod-

Aside from the recently remodelled music and VCE centres, the college has a new science centre and wood technology centre and last year the synthetic playing oval was completed. Additionally, the college has prioritised ICT and extensive computer equipment and laptops are available for student use. The college is proud to say that all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2014 will have their personal companion Acer laptop learning device. Other students will be able to access the fleet of laptops for all classroom activities. Much of this new laptop equipment has become available due to the Federal Govern-
ment injection of funds under the National Secondary Schools Computer Program. In addition, National Partnership funds have enabled the school to employ more teachers, begin the iPod trial at year eight, and create the Information Literacy Centre in the college library. Teachers and students also have wide access to electronic data projectors and/or interactive whiteboards installed in all rooms throughout the college. There are specialised areas for art and craft, home economics and textiles. Those who would like to inquire about the college programs can contact assistant principals Arlene Bailey and Kelly Panousieris on 9312 2900.

VICTORIA University Secondary College is dedicated to ensuring that its students have valuable and sustainable pathways beyond year 12. A part of this process is to give students the opportunity to experience the “world of work” during their studies. Matt Son, a year 12 VCAL student, undertook a work placement at the RACV City Club Melbourne, for the year while completing his VET hospitality certificate. Executive chef Stevie Carew was so impressed with Matt’s enthusiasm that he invited him to attend the RACV’s Work Experience Award Night. Matt did not have any idea that he would be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, recognising his “outstanding effort” during his placement. And then, to his surprise, he was offered a chef apprenticeship at the RACV for 2014. The RACV offers only one apprenticeship per year to an outstanding work placement student. Not all placements lead to employment opportunities but for Matt, it’s the pathway to his future. Matt reflected on this opportunity saying “my placement was challenging and very inter-

Brunch is served I’m always excited to receive recipes from readers, especially if they come with a good back story! So my sincere thanks to Food Bytes reader James Gyore from Altona for his quick and easy brunch recipe, which I’m featuring this week – tomato, cheese and herb tart. James says “I must confide that I’m dreadful. I invite people over with no regard for the state of the house or for what is or is not in the fridge, freezer and pantry. Time and time again, with great enthusiasm, I invite friends and family to brunch with little thought given to what I might feed them. The lawns needs mowing, the garden beds need weeding, there is a pile of washing that I’m trying to ignore, and being a handy-man, I still have not taken a look at the dryer which has been making odd noises for a few months now. But, it’s the weekend, and I very much look forward to seeing those I love, however infrequently. We’re all overworked, overcommitted and too busy for each other most of the time. So to hell with the chores, it’s the weekend, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen my friends and family. In my defence, with years of training and domestication, I do now have a collection of quick and easy go-to recipes for those occasions when friends and family are invited over to while away the late morning.”
TOMATO, HERB AND CHEESE TART: 1 sheet puff pastry 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 6 tomatoes, sliced 1 small red onion, halved and then sliced 1 tub Bocconcini cheese Salt and cracked pepper to taste Basil to garnish Pre-heat oven to 180C. Lay out the puff pastry on a baking tray. Sprinkle parmesan cheese over pastry. Top with sliced tomatoes and onion. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until pastry is crispy and tomatoes hot. Tear up the Bocconcini with fingers and distribute evenly over the tart. Finely chop basil to garnish, before serving. Note: the number of tomatoes needed to cover the sheet of pastry may vary. Thanks James! Can’t wait to try this myself. If you have your own recipe you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

Saints’ ‘shrewd’ play By ADEM SARICAOGLU NEW St Albans Saints coach Toby Paterson has hit back at critics claiming his club has spent heavily on high-profile signings for the upcoming National Premier League One season. Paterson last week announced former Melbourne Knight Craig Sweeney as the Saints’ latest acquisition after confirming the arrivals of Barry Devlin (Sunshine George Cross) and Felix Rosman (Port Melbourne) last month. However, Paterson spoke of his disappointment in rumours that St Albans spent large amounts of money on their prized new signings, claiming all three were secured in “shrewd” deals. “These silly figures that have been quoted are just ridiculous,” Paterson said. “These guys have been good, shrewd signings for us and I’m getting a bit annoyed that people are labelling us as a club that’s just going out and spending ridiculous amounts of money, and that’s just not true. “It’s actually caused a little bit of unrest with my players because now all of a sudden they think that these three guys are getting a lot more money and that’s not the case at all. They’ve just been good pick-ups that were available and wanted fresh challenges.” Devlin and Rosman were both captains at their former clubs, while Sweeney was a regular starter for the Knights in the old Victorian Premier League up until the end of last season. Paterson said the new signings will help bolster what was the second-most leakiest defence in State League One last year. “I looked at St Albans last year and watched them two or three times and I felt that their defence had to be strengthened, and I just didn’t think that they had the depth in the squad coming into the pre-season for what was required in the defence,” Paterson explained. “So I’ve gone for two tall central experienced defenders in Barry Devlin and also Felix Rosman - who’d been offered a new deal by Port Melbourne but decided that the commitment to training three or four nights a week was a bit much. “The two simply became available and I snapped them up.” Paterson is also excited by the latest addition of Sweeney. “He’s a terrific pick-up for us,” he said. “I’ve known Craig for a number of years and I contacted him when he came back from overseas and sold the club to him, and he was keen to link up with myself and (assistant) Steve Laurie, who he played for at Altona.”
MELBOURNE Knights and Green Gully are both expected to confirm their place in the National Premier League this week. Last week Football Federation Victoria confirmed both the Knights and Cavaliers will remain in the top flight of Victorian soccer as part of the 14-team NPL competition, while Sunshine George Cross and St Albans will take part in NPL1, which consists of 16 teams. Green Gully football manager Raymond Mamo told Star last week his club will go ahead in the NPL, while the Melbourne Knights confirmed their successful application in a statement on their club website. “I never thought there was any doubt about the Knights being ac-

Blues bowlers hold the line KEILOR has ensured it will remain in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Senior Division next summer after easily taking care of St Bernard’s on the road on Saturday. After play was restricted to 45 overs on day one due to the intense heat, the Blues resumed their innings on Saturday to finish all out for 210 at the end of the 60th over. In response St Bernard’s could only last 42 overs in the middle, posting just 98 runs in response to go down in the two-day clash. Strike Keilor bowlers Dan Schuppan and Jody Hutchinson were pivotal for the Blues, claiming four wickets each with Mubasher Hassan and Lachie Sneddon also getting in on the act. With just one game to come before the finals series kicks off, Keilor is now two wins clear of bottom-placed Brighton District. The Blues will host Airport West St Christopher’s in the final fortnight of their season. PLAY resumed in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf division after hot weather ruled out all competition last weekend. On Saturday, West Newport was the big winner in the division, securing its place in the finals series after knocking off Williamstown Imperials in a one-dayer at Loft Reserve. The Imps were bowled out for 149 three balls short of the end of the opening innings before West Newport dominated with the bat in its chase. Ross Cassidy (56 not out), Josh Eason-Jones (44) and Peter Hick (37 not out) were all handy in the middle as West Newport got its target with relative ease, reaching 1/150 by the end of the 35th over. The Imps are now out of the finals race, while West Newport now sits fourth with a chance of snatching second spot in the final fortnight of the home-and-away season. Williamstown Colts was also a big winner on Saturday, beating Grand United by 50 runs in their top-of-the-table clash at Parsons Reserve.

cepted in the NPL,” club president Andelko Cimera said in the statement. “We pretty much met the criteria without needing to make any major changes. We already have an Aclass facility, we regularly promote our young players, and we have a technical director who has already been working with our juniors for over a year.” Both the NPL and NPL1 are due to kick off in mid-March, with all clubs scheduled to play each other twice with no finals series taking place at the end of the year. Instead, the club who finishes first on the table after 26 home and away fixtures will be declared the state champion, and will play Tasmania’s NPL winner in the first round of the national finals.

The FFV also confirmed the
NPL’s junior season will begin in early April, with each of the 30 clubs divided geographically into two conferences. The Knights, Cavaliers, Georgies and Saints will all take part in the same conference.
YARRAVILLE secured one of its best wins of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season following a brilliant run chase against Altona on Saturday. After batting first on day one, the A’s posted 217 on the back of a blistering 111 from Aaron Maynard. However, Yarraville’s Matthew Love set about evening the score on day two. Love made an equally brilliant 104 not out to guide the Eagles to victory in the final over of the day. He was well supported by Curtis Maguire who made 39 at the top of the order while Yarraville captain Alex Hewet contributed 21. For Altona, Lee Elmore and Peter Herrick were the only multiple wicket takers and finished with two each. The win is Yarraville’s third of the season and lifts the Eagles to 11th spot on the VSDCA ladder. A win for Altona could have secured the A’s a finals berth. AFL VICTORIA has launched a regional search for the most talented Indigenous and multicultural footballers in the state. The Kickstart and All Nations initiatives give under-15 footballers from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds an opportunity to fast track their football development through a highly enjoyable on and off field program. To be eligible for the All Nations Cup Squad, players must have been born overseas or come from a non-English speaking background. Players who impress with their skills and character at the regional trials will be invited to a high performance camp in April and could possibly win selection for the respective teams and compete at the National Indigenous and Multicultural Carnival in Coffs Harbour from 11-17 April. Tryouts for Indigenous and multicultural footballers will be held at Visy Park on Friday 21 February from 5pm until 7pm.

Sport THERE is a superstition in football circles that when a club changes coach, they will win the next time they play. But what is going to happen in round one of the Western Region Football League season when eight new Division One coaches start barking orders for the first time? With so many new faces, LIAM TWOMEY takes a look at some of the biggest talking points about the new crop of leaders.
Eight talking points for eight coaching changes Who is the most high profile new coach? IT is hard to look past Steve Kretiuk when it comes to experience at the top level. Kretiuk built a reputation as a tough as nails defender for Footscray between 1992 and 2003. After his career finished, he remained in AFL circles and coached the Western Jets for five years, helping a number of the West’s top talent make it to the AFL. Before taking on the top job at Hoppers Crossing, Kretiuk was also delivering opposition analysis for the Brisbane Lions.
Who are the familiar faces? This won’t be Marcus Barclay’s first stint in coaching a WRFL Division One club. Barclay was in charge at Albion in 2011 when the club finished the season on top of the ladder. The Cats went on to lose the Division One grand final to Spotswood. Shortly after, Barclay was replaced as Albion head coach by Mark Greenshields. Meanwhile, Jesse Smith joins Yarraville after a successful stint as a development coach at Sunshine.
Who are the favourite sons? For Aaron Tymms (Albion), Josh Russo (Altona) and Tom Langlands (Spotswood), their appointments only further strengthen a rich history that each has with their respective club. The Langlands name is synonymous with Spotswood. Tom played for the Woodsmen as a junior and his father Gavin is a WRFL life-member. Furthermore, his brother Will is the only player to have played in all seven of Spotswood’s grand final appearances from 2007 to 2013. Tymms celebrated his 400th WRFL match last year and captained Albion to its premiership win in 2010. Russo was also a premiership captain with the Vikings in what was the club’s first Division One flag.
Who has been busy already? With the season just six weeks away, recruiting and list management decisions have come thick and fast. Deer Park has farewelled league bestand-fairest winner Shannon Broadbent to the Goulburn Valley Football League. Travis Lunardi has moved from Altona to the Essendon District Football League. Former Hoppers Crossing captain Brad Murphy will coach the Melton Bloods. On the incoming list, Kretiuk has ensured that Hoppers Crossing will be tough to beat at the stoppages with former AFL ruckman Wayde Skipper joining the club. Last year’s Division Two best-and-fairest winner at Sanctuary Lakes Jessi Lampi has joined Yarraville. Lampi will line up with former Western Jet Daniel Burton. Over the bridge, Danny Jacobs will pull on the jumper for Port Melbourne under Jason Love.
Tom Langlands will be looking to take Spotswood to an eighth consecutive grand final this season. 80235_04 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Who kept their jobs? It is no surprise Marc Bullen was one of the two coaches to remain in his position after the 2013 season. In his first year in charge at Deer Park, Bullen took the Lions all the way to a premiership. But that could be just the start of the successful times at Deer Park with former AFL trio Brent Guerra, Bret Thornton and Ryan Hargrave joining the star-studded side. As one of the biggest improvers in 2013, Brett Jacobs will return to Sunshine hoping to build on the ground made last year. The Kangaroos jumped from fifth to third on the WRFL ladder and Jacobs was named the Division One Coach of the Year.
Who could be coaching a premiership? With great power comes great responsibility and with great expectations can come great reward. For Barclay and Langlands, that reward could be a premiership cup. Both new coaches are taking over teams that made the Division One finals last year, with St Albans knocked out in week one by Altona and Spotswood suffering its second onepoint loss on grand final day in two years. While the pressure to be at the top end of the ladder may be greater on Barclay and Langlands than their counterparts, the rewards could be well worth it. What about Division Two? The influx of new coaches wasn’t just exclusive to Division One clubs this off-season. There were also plenty of changes among Division Two clubs as the move into a three-division system approaches. The new batch of Division Two coaches are: Adam Borg and John Thrush (Albanvale), Michael Shepperbottom (Braybrook), Paul Growcott (Caroline Springs) Rick Munn (Sunshine Heights), Stuart Daly (Glen Orden), Shaun Borlase and Matthew Welsh (North Footscray), Trevor Davies (West Footscray), Daniel Mitchell (Tarneit) and Joe Larizza (North Sunshine).
Altona premiership captain Josh Russo has graduated to coach. 103729_05 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI 1119842-AM08-14
What can be expected from Werribee Districts? After crossing over from the Victorian Amateur Football Association, Wade Chapman takes the reigns at a Werribee Districts outfit that has bypassed Division Two and will go toe-to-toe with the best the league has to offer. In coming from the VAFA, the Tigers are a bit of an unknown heading into the 2014 season however, one thing is for sure, Werribee has been busy. Footscray VFL player Brent Prismall will play at Soldiers Reserve when his VFL commitments allow and former Werribee VFL best-and-fairest winner Ben Sharp is another marquee signing. The club has also welcomed back a number of former players including Tate and Shaun McCutcheon as well as Brent Morrow.

Falcons in Breaking the best form In the
Doghouse KEVIN HILLIER
footy mould
By LIAM TWOMEY
GRASSROOTS football continues to lead the way in breaking the male dominated world of Aussie Rules football with more examples this week in the WRFL. Meredith Anguin was appointed to the WRFL board and Sue Thornton announced as president of the new Tarneit Titans Football Club. Meredith brings a wealth of international business experience to the board and a family history with local football. Her late father Ron was president of the league for 11 years and her mother Thelma was treasurer for a decade. Both her parents are life-members of the league. Sue has been actively involved at Hoppers Crossing acting in a variety of roles including time keeper, trainer, team manager and administrator. She faces a huge task with the Titans making their debut in just a few weeks. I wish both ladies all the best and hope to see more in the future. BOTH the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and the Werribee Cricket Club are holding a fundraising Pink Day this Saturday in their respective rooms. Both are raising money for the McGrath Foundation with a number of different fun activities and of course raffles and auction items. Werribee will have local Federal Member Joanne Ryan as guest speaker while YCCC has not named what their entertainment will be. Good to see local clubs supporting these kinds of community projects. For details for Werribee, contact Debra Dean deeno@bigpond.net.au and for Yarraville Club, Cathie Strachan on 0418 594 110. THE E.J. Whitten Foundation has its annual Race Night Dinner coming up at Moonee Valley on Friday 28 February. The night features guest speakers and leading racing identities plus a three-course dinner, race entry and race book. If you want more details or to book go to the website ejwhittenfoundation.com.au or call 1300 9448 836. Ted Junior runs a number of events during the year to raise money for men’s health awareness especially prostate cancer and he does a great job. Another great event that day is the 12th Annual Charity Golf Day run by the Rotary Club of Altona at Kooringal Golf Course. Monies raised go to Very Special Kids and other Rotary projects. It starts at 12.30pm and you can get all the details from Charlie Montebello 0412 257 723. NORTH Footscray Football Club is looking for under-18 players - call Ash Lewis for details on 0420 673 034. Grant and Melissa Smith are running the Bhealthy Shape Up Fit Club in the City of Wyndham area. It takes place on Sunday mornings from 7am to 8am and is free. Call Grant on 0407 821 813 for more details. FORMER Werribee Park golf champion Matt Tudor is certainly making a name for himself with his weekly radio appearance on SEN Friday afternoons. Keep an ear out for the Calloway Kid. CITY West Falcons claimed the battle of the West in round one of the Victorian Netball League last week. The Falcons smashed VU Western Lightning by 18 goals to get their VNL championship title defence off to the perfect start. City West looked strong from the opening centre pass, scoring 14 goals in the first quarter to build an eight-goal lead. With their backs to the wall, the Lightning tried to rebound and closed the gap to 10 at the main break. However, in the second half, the Falcons kicked into another gear and secured the 52-34 win. “They thoroughly deserved their win,” VU Western Lightning coach Matt Hills said.
“They were much better drilled than us and won many more positions all over the court. “I’ve got to give credit to Casey Price (goal defence) and Emily Mannix (goal keeper). They had the better of our goalers on the night.” As well as a strong defensive performance, City West was also led by shooting duo Alice Teague-Neeld and Julia Knott. Teague-Neeld scored 27 goals from 28 attempts while Knott shot 25 goals from 27 attempts. For VU, Kate Thompson was the pick of the shooters and finished with 24 goals. “We will do a pretty thorough review on this performance,” Hills said. “It is really important that you do that early in the sea-
son to identify some of the key things that you want to work on. Particularly when, like us, you’ve got some new combinations. “The last two years we have lost our first game of the season so this is three years in a row. It’s not a good thing but not the end of the world. We will do a review and then we will dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and be back working hard for training on Monday night.” VU is expected to have Amelia Hills back for its clash with the Southern Saints this week. For the Falcons, they will look to make it two wins in a row when they take on Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. Both matches are at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.

Take care with tyre wear IF drivers look after their tyres then they’ll return the favour. The most important thing to remember is to maintain correct tyre pressure to ensure good performance and safety. Why is maintaining the right tyre pressure important? Underinflated tyres wear out faster as they can overheat, have increased rolling resistance and
can require more fuel to maintain the speed. Over-inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling on the road. Both over and under-inflated tyres suffer more damage than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly. Correct tyre pressures help
to maintain optimum fuel efficiency. This can have a direct impact on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. National Tyres can help provide information on the recommended tyre pressure for vehicles. Things to remember: Use an accurate tyre pres-
sure gauge, don’t just look at the tyre - appearances can be deceiving. Check the spare and ensure that the spare is serviceable and roadworthy. Tyre pressures should be checked roughly every two to four weeks. It is normal for tyres to slowly lose air over time.
Tyre failure at high speeds can have tragic consequences. Any sort of damage on a tyre should be inspected by a specialist. Although the minimum tread pattern depth is 1mm or 2/32 of an inch, it is recommended that tyres are replaced before they become that worn.
Tyre pressures should be checked and set when the tyres are cold not after a long road trip because heat will temporarily raise the pressure. The correct tyre pressure for the vehicle should be listed in the vehicle handbook that is usually kept in the glove box. Too much or too little pressure can be dangerous.

Roadstar Take a peek at the tweaks THE Mitsubishi ASX has been updated for the 2014 model year, gaining extra equipment, mechanical tweaks and revised prices. Four of the six available ASX variants are now cheaper than before, with the entry-level front-wheel-drive petrol manual down $1000 to $24,990 and the flagship Aspire all-wheel-drive diesel auto down $3000 to $33,490. Mitsubishi Australia has added 17-inch alloy wheels, a chrome grille garnish, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera displayed in a 6.1inch screen to the three base-spec ASX variants, namely 2WD petrol manual, 2WD petrol CVT and 4WD diesel auto. The updated high-grade ASX Aspire variants, namely 2WD petrol CVT, 4WD petrol CVT and 4WD diesel auto, gain the MMCS infotainment system with seven-inch touchscreen and satellite navigation, as well as black roof rails and, for the 2WD model, a panoramic sunroof previously standard on 4WD. All models benefit from a reshaped rear bench seat base for added passenger comfort. Revisions have also been made to the suspension and the shape of the door mirrors, promising improved ride and handling and noise, vibration, harshness levels respectively. The ASX interior envelopes the occupants in comfort making it as striking on the inside as it looks on the outside. The aim was to get the balance between style, comfort and practicality just right. For instance, the ergonomically
All models of Mitsubishi’s ASX benefit from a reshaped rear bench seat base for added passenger comfort. designed seats are as comfortable as they look, and when combined with the telescopic steering wheel, offer the ideal driving position whatever the size of the driver. The instrument cluster has been designed to give the driver maximum visibility, while encased within ASX’s gently rounded shape to blend seam-
lessly with the dashboard. In the back, ASX is surprisingly spacious with more leg room than would be expected in such a compact SUV. Throughout ASX, the clever storage space design means there’s plenty of room for everything. ASX has the latest hands-free
phone system technology with Bluetooth phone connectivity so occupants can make and receive calls at the touch of a button. Fine-tuning of the 110kW/197Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine has improved emissions incrementally, while the old 110kW/300Nm 1.8-litre diesel engine has now been discontinued and re-
placed by the 110kW/360Nm 2.2-litre diesel that launched locally last month. Visit Werribee Mitsubishi to test drive this vehicle at 17-25 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9741 5300 for more information.
Kia proceeds to create fresh new ground THIS hot hatch may finally change perceptions about Korean cars once and for all. It’s called the Kia Proceed GT and it shows Korean car-makers have all but leapfrogged their Japanese rivals and are now on their way to challenging the Europeans. It was designed by a Frenchman, engineered in Germany and is made in Slovakia which, incidentally, produces more cars per capita than any other country. There are three models in the Kia GT range in Europe starting at the equivalent of $32,990 and stretching to $42,990. Australia will likely get two models when the car goes on sale in March 2014. The local starting price is yet to be finalised but bank on it being close to or less than $30,000, undercutting the enemy from within, the Veloster Turbo coupe from sister company Hyundai. The digital instrument display is like something out of a fighter jet. There is a choice of two images, a traditional analogue dial or a digital speed
readout with gauges either side that show how much turbo power you’re using. It changes at the press of a button on the steering wheel. It has six airbags and a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Given that Kia has decided to leave all airbags in place, unlike Renault and Volkswagen which have removed rear seat airbags in some new models to exploit a Euro NCAP loophole, the Kia GT hatch will likely get five-stars from Australian NCAP. Visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute to test drive this vehicle at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am6pm. Alternatively call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at the corner of Western Hwy and Christies Rd, Caroline Springs. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am-6pm. Phone 8390 5165 to learn more.
