Finest queens ever seen
Aaron Taylor and Justin Clausen in their very best impersonations of Lady Gaga.
By KRYSTEN MANUEL, Pictures: ADAM WILSON WHILE many couples across the Border were sitting down to candlelit dinners and foot massages, a small pocket of good-humoured locals gathered at the Commercial Club on Valentines Day. For many of them, it was the first time they had seen a man dressed as a woman - and a fabulous woman at that. But the Queens of the Outback acted, sang, danced and improvised to the sold-out crowd, who gave as good as they got. Between the false lashes, six-inch heels, talonlike nails and diva attitudes was the telling of a hilarious story about three Melbourne drag queens travelling deep into outback Australia. Along the way, the queens sing for their supper, find themselves behind bars, make guest appearances at strip clubs and sort out some manly bar brawls. Aside from being absolutely hilarious, Queens of the Outback was quite impressive, with spectacular costumes, edgy humour, quality voices and legs that made every woman in the house green with envy.
Could it be the end of the big heat?
Cool relief here By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER three January heatwaves that slipped into February, which itself brought five 40-plus degree days to date, experts are predicting the latest cool change could be permanent. It’s been 10 days since the Border has seen a 40-degree day and it had been 20 days since experiencing a day under 30 degrees. But the heavens finally opened up on Saturday, delivering one of the highest rainfalls in the
North East at 28.6mm and experts are predicting permanent relief is in sight. “There was a low pressure system in Western Australia that moved down over our area, so there was a lot of cloud associated with that and that’s why some fairly good falls occurred around the district,” Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) technical officer Robbie Lennard said. “The next week should be relatively cooler, high twenties, low thirties, no rain.
“We’re getting near the end of February, the sun’s starting to get lower in the sky and the days are getting shorter as we get to March 21 and 22, which is the autumnal equinox where days and nights are equal again as we head into winter, towards 21 June which is the winter solstice - the shortest day of the year. “So even if the situation is set up where you have the high pressure system out in the Tasman Sea directing generally northerly winds from the
inland, even though it might be unseasonably warm in March, it won’t be a heatwave at around 40 degrees. “The days are shorter and the sun can’t heat us up as much. So touch wood, hopefully it’s the last heatwave of the summer.” It’s been a long hot summer with three heatwaves hitting the Border between 1-3 January, 14-18 January and 28 January - 3 February. The second heatwave was a record
breaker. It began to develop from 12 January, with temperatures more than 10 degrees above normal in southern NSW. While this heatwave broke few records for daily maximum temperature, several stations equalled their record for consecutive hot days including Albury, Hay and Canberra. “It’s up there with the biggest heatwave of the last 100 years,” BOM climatologist Acacia Pepler told NewsWeekly back in January.

Long road to career By TANIA PHILLIPS ALMOST 10 years after she left, NewsWeekly senior journalist Krysten Manuel was invited back to her old school Xavier High this week to give the annual speech at the opening assembly of the year. Krysten, who graduated in 2005, had been sports captain and an academic and arts leader at the school during her time and was asked by the principal to give the address. Despite admitting to not being a great lover of public speaking the young journalist was quick to hit her mark, giving this year’s batch of young Xavier High students an insight into life after school and her journey back to her home town and to a job, for the past year and a half as a senior journalist on the NewsWeekly. “When I left Xavier, I left quite proud of myself then as well,” she told the students now sitting where she herself had been less than a decade ago. “My years at Xavier were a very happy time. I was surrounded by good friends and some particularly amazing teachers. “I was sprint running in the professional Gift circuit, I had been studying classical piano for 13 years, I was top of almost every class and I somehow managed to attain three scholarships that would take me through my university years with few financial worries. “But it’s the time in between leaving school and starting work with NewsWeekly that has been most beneficial for me - and in those seven years I achieved nothing worth a medal, sash, trophy, write-up in the newspaper or even a congratulations - that is, except for a degree.” She said starting university and leaving home for Canberra had been an eye-opener and the start of a voyage of discovery that took her from Mt Hotham to Canada from working at resorts to travel magazines and finally back home to Albury
Current school captains Kaitlin Suidgeest, and Mason Collins with News Weekly journalist Krysten Manuel (centre). and the NewsWeekly. “In the summer of 2006, I started uni at the University of Canberra,” she told her young audience. “In a few short months I moved out of the family home, with its hot dinners, clean sheets and what I still believe were ridiculous curfews, and moved onto a campus that housed 1000 university students, of which I knew none. “I was severely lacking in life skills, and the sudden freedom led me to go from a straight A student to a “p’s get degrees” attitude. “One of the things I was told but never took seriously, and wish I had, was just how hard it is to get a professional job out of uni - especially in journalism,” she said. “Having fully expected this to fall in my lap,
We are here to offer you new and traditional treats with delicious Napalese and continental food.
like most other things had, you can imagine how impressed I was when I found myself four months after graduation cleaning hotel rooms at Quest. “(Much later) it felt like fate that when I arrived back in Albury a job popped up at NewsWeekly - and the rest, as they say, is history. “Life is about being happy, and I believe you will only find true happiness when you know yourself,” Krysten told the assembly. “Trust me when I say, no matter what you believe, no matter what you think you’re all about, no matter what values you think you have now, much of it will change between now and your mid-twenties.” “You will scare yourself until your face goes white and your hands shake like they’re attached to a jackhammer,” Krysten told them “You will fall so hard in love it will literally take your breath away. “You will feel pain like you never believed was possible. And one day you will finally know who you are. “So expect the unexpected, and relish in it when it happens.”
Submarine yarn By KRYSTEN MANUEL YARN-BOMBING. The phrase evokes images of cackling little old ladies sneaking around in the dead of night with big balls of wool and evil grins. For those of you who don’t know what yarn-bombing is, that’s not it. Also known as graffiti knitting, crochet grenades and yarnstorming, yarn bombing is “the art of enhancing a public place or object with graffiti knitting.” You may remember this occurred to a tree in The Cube last year - and looked fabulous. This year, the ante has officially been upped as designs to make the Holbrook submarine yellow have been released. “We need as many people in the community to get involved to help us realise this massive project,” a statement from Murray Arts said. “And you don’t need to live in Holbrook, there will be donation points all around the region.” So what do you need to do to become a part of this Australia-first event? Make any length or square of knitted or crocheted material in yellow. It can be any size or shape. As long as it’s yellow. Donate anything yellow including old towels, blankets or jumpers, wool, twine and rope, as well as any knitting or crochet needles. Anything yellow we can knit with! Drop-off at donation points located across the six participating shires and councils. For regular updates like the Holbrook Yellow Submarine facebook page or email:info@murrayarts.org.au

Cafe with the mostest AN UNPRECEDENTED opportunity to operate a new business in the heart of Albury’s CBD is on offer from AlburyCity. Expressions of interest are being sought for the lease and operation of the new Albury Regional Art Gallery café/restaurant, expected to open mid next year. “We are very excited to begin this EOI process and anticipate it will generate widespread interest throughout the hospitality industry,” AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said. “I believe what we have to offer is unique. An architecturally designed café/restaurant, opening onto parkland in the heart of our retail
precinct, with exposure to more than 200,000 people who already use QEII Square each year, as well as the projected 80,000 visitors to the redeveloped gallery.” The café/restaurant will provide indoor and outdoor seating for up to 106 diners, and includes an outdoor timber deck terrace overlooking QEII Square. It is anticipated the cafe will open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and Cr Mack predicts it will quickly become a popular meeting place for locals and visitors. “The Art Gallery redevelopment is the first stage of an ambitious plan to revitalise QEII Square to create a
dynamic and vibrant inner-city cultural, social and civic hub,” Cr Mack said. “We’re looking for an experienced operator to lease the premises and run the business and we will be expecting a consistently high level of service, quality food and wine and a seasonal menu incorporating a selection of locally sourced fresh produce.” AlburyCity has partnered with commercial real estate agent, LJ Colquhoun Dixon to assist with the attraction of a suitable tenant. Expressions of Interest opened on Saturday 15 February and close on Monday 14 April.
Fruit Flies hit heights By TANIA PHILLIPS THEY have been flying high for 35 years and now Albury’s own Flying Fruit Fly Circus is going to celebrate with one of their biggest tours for more than a decade. Rehearsals are underway for the company’s hit show “Control Alt Delete’’, which will tour Victoria, NSW and Queensland from May to October. The eight-week tour will take in 21 performances at 12 different venues. A cast of 16 young artists, ranging in age from nine to 19, will be directed by award-winning choreographer Jodie Farrugia. Fruit Fly executive director
Richard Hull said Control Alt Delete combined circus, physical theatre and dance with an original soundtrack by Morganics, one of Australia’s leading hip-hop composers. Mr Hull said the 2014 season would be a fitting celebration of the company’s 35th anniversary. The tour will be preceded by a performance of “Circus Under My Bed’’ at the Melbourne Arts Centre as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival on 9-19 April. He said audiences would be dazzled by world-class skills ranging from trapeze and contortion to clowning and juggling.
Expressions of interest are being sought for the lease and operation of the new Albury Regional Art Gallery café/restaurant.

SES needs recruits THE Albury SES is recruiting new volunteer members to join the unit and assist the community during times of natural disaster such as storm and flood. “Albury is a growing community and as such we need more members to cover that area,” said Tim Keown, Public Information Officer, Albury SES. “We are seeking people of all backgrounds and age groups and encourage people with existing skills such as chainsaw, boat or four wheel drive operators to apply. “If people don’t have those skills we still want to hear from them. “The minimum age is 16 years but while we have limits on the number of people under 18 years of age we can recruit, we certainly encourage them to come along to the open night and discuss their options.” People interested in joining the Albury SES are invited to attend a recruitment night at 7pm,

From TAFE to the top By KRYSTEN MANUEL DESPITE a great deal of anxiety surrounding changes to TAFE fees in late 2012, the visual arts sector has fared well, with one of their students stepping up to prove it. Visual arts diploma graduate Jessica Goodvinn has just been accepted into Australia’s only heritage, museums and art conservation course at the University of Canberra and will major in conservation. “This is a dream,” she said. “I didn’t think I would do this. Living in Albury, I didn’t think I’d be capable of going any further than that and this is just the top for me. “It’s really thanks to the TAFE course, particularly the last year where you’re able to do a full year of self-development and working on your own. It gave me confidence and also the skills needed. You had to have time management and so on, it taught me everything I needed to move on.” Jessica said the advanced diploma of visual arts through TAFENSW Riverina Institute Albury had been invaluable in leading her to her latest achievement. “I think because I do have the advanced diploma I got in, because I had that experi-
ence already working in a similar field it gave me the edge,” she said. “It’s open enough that it gives you the freedom to do what you want but it really gives you direction and caters to the individual. For me, it really allowed me to grow in a secure environment. “And now, the conservation course can lead me anywhere. I can go overseas with it and can do post-grad things, but it will really just open doors to working in a more speciality field - like in a museum, or a library or gallery. “I’d really like to work in old libraries with old books to preserve them.” Jessica’s visual arts teacher Mary-Jane Griggs said Jessica’s studies at TAFE had been very successful, giving her confidence and passion. “Not only is she confident and committed to her painting and other art investigations, but she has gained good vocational skills and maturity as a thinker, researcher, manager of her time and study commitments,” she said. “Her study in the BA Heritage Museums and Art Conservation opens up a fabulous career path. “In the years to come I can imagine Jes-
sica behind the scenes in an art museum, poring over wonderful objects working in a team of professionals who look after our cultural heritage.” Ms Griggs said despite changes to fees, prospective students could look forward to the same quality education that had led Jessica to where she needs to be in years to come. “The government core funding was removed in late 2012,” she said. “It was a massive change because it’s made it difficult for people who can only study part time. “We have survived and we’re still going strong, but it’s a very new educational landscape really. “We’re still offering a really thorough, good quality start to their art education. The difference now is we offer the diploma and advanced diploma. What we’re missing out on are those other certificate courses which have become prohibitive because they would be so costly and the vet fee help doesn’t apply there. “Despite this massive change, people who want to study art and make art the basis of their adult life and career, they still come to us.”
Local TAFE graduate Jessica Goodvinn will head to Canberra this year after being accepted into Australia’s only heritage, museums and art conservation course.

Change forum
A PROGRAM aimed at supporting regional residents developing or managing change in community groups and business will be held in Wodonga next month. The Leading Change forum will be held at The Cube on 19 March as a fund-raiser for Hilltop - the Albury Wodonga Patient and Carer Accommodation Centre, the McGrath Foundation and Alpine Valleys Community Leadership Program (AVCLP). Cricket legend Glenn McGrath will lead a strong line-up of speakers which will also include Executive Chair of Bega Cheese Barry Irvin. Six workshops will be held throughout the day including one by futurist Paul Higgins “Directors Leading in Complex Futures”.
Invisalign uses comfortable, removable and virtually invisible aligners to straighten your teeth, giving you the confidence to show off your smile.
www.evolveorthodontics.com.au
Mr Higgins will discuss how to change the way we lead and think about issues, given the rapid pace of change, so that regional areas are not left behind. “I’ll be showing people how to move away from ego-driven approaches to facilitate networks to deal with change. Value is created in networks rather than individuals and because of modern technologies we have capacity to engage far greater networks than ever before,” Mr Higgins said. Other workshop topics include Creating Better Boards, Social Enterprises for Sustainable Communities, Communication for Motivation, and Best Practice in Family Business. AVCLP Chair Anthony Griffiths said the program was designed to support regional residents developing or man-
aging change in community groups and in business. “If you are interested in learning new skills, being inspired by personal journeys and meeting others in the region grappling with change, then this is the event for you,” Mr Griffiths said. AVCLP is a not-for-profit organisation delivering programs to develop leaders in the region to build strong, resilient communities. Since its formation in 1999, AVCLP has produced 275 graduates from its annual program. For more information please visit the AVCLP website http:// avclp.org.au/leading-changeforum.html To book tickets please phone The Cube, Wodonga on (02) 6022 9311.

Fresh blood win LOCAL high school students on both sides of the border have taken top honours in the 2013 annual Australian Red Cross Blood Service School Challenge. Tallangatta Secondary College student Imogen Wallace has led the way, being named as the Victorian State Blood Service Youth Ambassador for 2013. The awards, part of the annual Australian Red Cross Blood Service School Challenge, are aimed at encouraging students to give blood for those in need. Principal Alby Freijah said this was a well-deserved recognition and the school was very proud of her. “Imogen is an active and
positive member of our school, who has made a point of giving back to the community. Educating other students and promoting the benefits of blood donation is just another example of this,” Mr Freijah said. Blood service spokesperson Cathy Chapman said the Blood Service School Challenge and the Youth Ambassador Program was a great way to educate young people about the importance of blood donation. “We know many regular donors first experienced giving blood in their youth and this has motivated them to make an ongoing commitment,” Ms Chapman said. “The need for blood is expected to double within the next 10 years and the Blood Service
is relying on today’s youth to become the donors of the future,” she said. However Imogen was not the only big winner from the border area this year, with James Fallon High School among the NSW schools. The school was awarded third place in NSW, thanks to staggering 192 donations made by Year 11 and Year 12 students throughout terms one, two and three. Ms Jennifer Parrett, deputy principal, said it was a great achievement for the school. More than 600 students from the Border Region have lined up to save lives in this year’s Blood Service School Challenge, with 10 schools from the area participating.
Fighting the free radicals By KRYSTEN MANUEL

PARKINSON’S disease and rheumatoid arthritis patients in and around Albury-Wodonga are urgently needed to help complete a research study into the role of free radical chemicals and the inflammation they cause. Charles Sturt University (CSU) PhD student, Diane Hughes, is investigating the protective role red blood cells may play in neutralising free radicals in the blood. “The interest for me comes from interest in peripheral inflammation - so inflammation in the red blood cells,” she said. “There’s a lot of evidence that says that’s an important
factor in the development of rheumatoid arthritis and we’re investigating if it’s related to Parkinson’s disease as well.” Over the past eight months, Ms Hughes has found the inflammation and altered shape of red blood cells may be important in Parkinson’s disease, while blood cell shapes with rheumatoid arthritis also appear different and so may affect blood flow. “The basic hypothesis is that peripheral inflammation is going to be a possible factor in the cause or causes of Parkinson’s disease,” she said. To find out more or to take part, contact Ms Hughes on mobile 0417 695 297.
Charles Sturt University student Di Hughes is calling for volunteers with Parkinson’s disease or rheumatoid arthritis.

Not OK to spray YOU wouldn’t use an unlicensed plumber or electrician, so why use an unlicensed contractor to spray chemicals on your property? The Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) is currently investigating a number of people suspected of spraying agricultural chemicals as a business operation without holding a Commercial Operators Licence (COL) issued by DEPI. It is illegal to conduct a business (or offer a service for fee or reward) which involves the use of agricultural chemicals
without a COL. This applies to all agricultural and horticultural uses of chemicals, including vermin control and fumigation of soil or produce. DEPI senior chemical standards officer Steven Field encouraged landholders to use only licensed commercial operators. “COL holders must complete appropriate training before being issued a licence, to ensure they can safely handle, store and use agricultural chemicals,” Mr Field said. Landholders are also encouraged to require spray con-
tractors to produce their licence before they start work. “If landholders do not ensure that contractors applying agricultural chemicals to their property are properly licensed, then they may be liable for the same offence as the contractor themselves,” Mr Field said. Contractors can be identified through the Yellow Pages or internet searches, or by contacting peak industry bodies such as the Victorian Groundsprayers Association (www.vicgroundsprayers.com) or the Vertebrate Pest Management Association (www.vpmav.org.au)

Letters Just imagine IMAGINE the anti-abortion protesters accept there is an overwhelming majority (about 90 per cent) of opposition from the community to their presence and weekly protests in Englehardt Street, outside the Fertility Control Clinic. Imagine they consider other people have a right to have a personal view that is not the same as theirs. Imagine they respect another person’s privacy to enter a legal medical business without obstruction, interference or criticism. If so, they will not continue to protest outside the clinic but take their protest to Queen Elizabeth Square, where they would be able to protest every day. This would earn the respect of the community, rather than the criticism. However, I am a dreamer! This is why the Albury City Council, in conjunction with the Albury police, must change the by-laws to exclude the protesters from Englehardt Street. Assoc Prof Pieter Mourik AM, Baranduda.

Prior to the 2013 federal election I wrote an article on the website la.org.au, concerning the Cathy McGowan campaign, and its intimate links with radical pro-abortionists who oppose freedom of speech and freedom of protest. A week ago I received an (unsigned) email from the official “Albury Choice email address. In a vile and unprofessional manner, the emailer attacked both my article and my physical appearance, asking if I was a homosexual and suggesting that I would be “very popular with the boys in prison. The founder of Albury, a principled and pioneering man named Robert Brown, was a pro-life Catholic. He was also my 4x-great-grandfather, and he would be turning in his grave knowing that the town he founded nearly 180 years ago had become so morally bankrupt as to tolerate the killing of unborn children. The house that Ben built By KRYSTEN MANUEL LOCAL man, Ben Lazzarotto, has lived in and completely renovated two houses over the past 10 years and is currently building his own home in Thurgoona. A builder by trade, Ben knows all the the ins and outs of renovating, and certainly the highs and lows. “I say I’ll never do it again, but this is my hobby, I’m proud of it and if I make money out of it then that’s just a bonus, he said. After leaving the army and quickly tiring of throwing dead money into renting, a stroke of luck came Ben’s way in the form of an old matron of the Holbrook Hospital. “Mum told me the old matron of the hospital said she was looking to sell her house for thirty something thousand, he said. “I checked out the house and it needed a lot of work done to it, but I thought ‘bugger it, I can do it.’ “The real estate agent said ‘you cannot sell this house for thirty grand, that’s ridiculous,’ and the matron said, ‘well I bought it for $20,000 back in the day, so if I double my money, I think I’m doing pretty good.’ “So I got it for $42,000. Over the next four years, Ben spent around $20,000 on the house and when the housing boom came through Holbrook, the profit was pocketed. “I was lucky enough to peel that
out at $130,000 and that set me up for this house, he said. Having just finalised his second house, Ben looks back on his journey and speaks from experience when he advises prospective renovators of a few iron-clad rules that could make or break their renovating experience. “I had a problem with nearly finishing one job and then starting another, he said. “You really have to get it to completion and move to the next one. “Split up jobs, decide if you have enough knowledge to do it yourself, or ring someone. “Know when you’re over your head and when you need to call an expert, it will end up costing you less in the long run. “If you don’t have market research behind you, and you don’t know what other houses are selling for, then you’re going in blind. “Take help from friends and family. “Eliminate labour costs, that’s where you’ll save the most amount of money, meaning that’s where you’ll make the most amount of money in your profit. “When you first go into a house and decide you’re going to renovate it, look at all the things you would change and write them down. If you’re living in the house, they will grow on you. “You need a real estate agent and a property valuer. You don’t want to be
doing stuff to a house when it’s not going to make any money - it’s not your house. And finally, don’t have horses in your backyard. “At my house in Holbrook, my ex decided that she wanted a foal in the backyard so she could rear it or whatever the bloody hell she was doing with it. “We had it roped off and that was fine, but for some reason, she decided to take the rope down because the horse could then come up to the window, and she thought it was pretty cool that the horse could stick its head in. “She wasn’t there for a little while, the rope was down and it decide that it wanted to chew the timber on the doors, just after they had been installed and painstakingly lacquered as well. “It had just gnawed at the timber in at least four different spots and really chewed the window as well. “I was not happy, let’s put it that way. I was very, very angry. “Those doors were pride of place, they were the most expensive thing in the house, and I was proud of them. “I was that upset I could have punched the horse. All in all, Ben has indulged his passion and made a substantial profit from renovating. “With some things, you just have to have a crack, Ben said.

Time for a taste By KRYSTEN MANUEL TASTES of Rutherglen is celebrating its 26th anniversary this year, with four fantastically themed routes to drive, bus or fly through. “It’s a celebration of the wonderful local produce and the amazing wine that comes from the Rutherglen region,” the festival’s executive officer of wine makers of Rutherglen, Judy Tanner Doyle said. “It has become a favourite and each year, although we attract a number of new people, we also have people that return each year. “Tastes of Rutherglen is very much a family event - it’s a roving festival and this year each of the four shuttle routes has a theme.” The Chambers Route offers a theme of shiraz and sweet delights through Scion Vineyard, Anderson Winery, Jones Winery and Vineyard, Chambers Rosewood and Stanton and Killeen. The Lake Moodemere Route offers the Hunter Gatherer theme, which flows through Campbells Wines, Buller Wines, Lake Moodemere and Warrabilla Wines. The Morris Route’s theme is The
Mediterranean Mile and traces through Mount Prior Vineyard, John Gehrig Wines, Morris Wines and Vintara Wines. Finally, the Valhalla Route follows the theme of Old Roots, New Shoots and passes through Rutherglen Estates, Pfeiffer Wines, Cofield Wines, Valhalla Wines, All Saints Estate and St Leonards Vineyard. This year another new element on offer is the heli-shuttle. “We have helicopters you can book to go from one winery to another or book a package of three flights,” Ms Tanner Doyle said. “It just provides that extra special component if you want to see all the wineries from the air.” Ms Tanner Doyle said Tastes of Rutherglen originally started as two weekends back in 1987. “It was tied in with a centennial celebration and that’s what created it. The local wineries wanted to do a special project,” she said. “Each year we try to freshen it up a bit. A couple of years ago and this year we have expanded offerings of activities as well as the entree sized meal and wine so visitors have a choice of things
Tastes of Rutherglen promises to be fun for the whole family. like cooking classes, master classes and cheese making, so that if you don’t want to spend your entire day visiting all the wineries and trying all the wonderful food matched to the wines you can take part in the activity as well. “We’re also expanding our offerings of children’s events.”
Ms Tanner Doyle said the best way to enjoy the weekend was to use the shuttle to enjoy the wine, entrees and activities to their full potential. And don’t forget your “tastes pack.” “Tastes is a very relaxed, soft festival,” she said. “It will be entertaining, comfort-

Prepared Like A Bride are coming to Wodonga for one night only.
Christian metal shines By KRYSTEN MANUEL WHEN you think of metal music, you think of loud, raspy screaming, superfast guitar riffs and guys with long hair whipping it around every which way. Generally, you don’t think of Christian music. But Prepared Like A Bride front-man Ryan Bowles begs to differ. “We are all Christians and we try and write music that will benefit other people in some way,” he said. “I think people outside of our music genre are surprised because they associate metal music with more satanic things, but within our genre it’s pretty common to be a metal band and a Christian band.” Prepared Like A Bride is a five piece, progressive metal band, formed on the Gold Coast in 2009.
Their influences are many and varied, but draw mainly on personal experience. “We have a very wide range of music that influences us,” Bowles said. “Life experiences have influenced us pretty heavily and also our spiritual beliefs as well. In life we’ve all been through a variety of different circumstances, good and bad. “The flavour of the album is one of hope, inspiration and encouragement. Those three things combined are what we tried to set out to say - that people would be able to find hope, encouragement and inspiration in every aspect of their lives.” The band’s debut album - Overcomer is fresh on the shelves as of 7 February and has already received an overwhelming response.
Box office
“It has received amazing, positive responses from people around the country and also globally, so that’s the reason why we’ll be touring come March,” Bowles said. And last question, of all genres of music to fall in love with, why metal? “Why metal? All of us were introduced to metal somewhere along the line and it just kept spreading like any good form of music,” Bowles said. “We found ourselves jamming one day and formed a band. Usually it’s quite fast-paced and aggressive, so that gets the heart beat right up there, and the energy and atmosphere every show.” Prepared Like A Bride will be in Wodonga on Monday 17 march at Wodonga Masonic Hall.

Let’s talk about sex By KRYSTEN MANUEL MOVIE: Are We Officially Dating?
STARRING: Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis and Jessica Jucas DIRECTOR: Tom Gormican DURATION: 94 minutes FUNNY, heart-warming and fascinating in a ‘slice of life’ kind of way, Are We Officially Dating? is a lighthearted, unchallenging film that captures the minefieldlike dating scene for the twenty-somethings. Its realistic characters were the highlight, providing an uncomfortably familiar account of what guys and girls have to deal with when you find yourself single and supposedly “ready to mingle.” Between the furious Facebook stalking (with
running commentary), the annoying individuals who bat above their average and just can’t take a hint, and the equally annoying emotionally stunted “just in it for the sex” types, Gormican did a fantastic job of getting that humoured, slightly embarrassed smile of familiarity to creep across our faces. Unfortunately, the unrealistic part of the film was the storyline. When Mikey (Jordan) splits with his wife, he and his two best friends Jason (Efron) and Daniel (Teller) make a bet they will stay single for as long as possible. While this might be something a 20-year-old might endeavour to do, I find it hard to believe someone in their mid to late twenties would embark on such a ridiculous path ... but then again, people are full of surprises. And so, the games begin and all parties fall in love, the only problem is keeping it from each other. How

fan. The kitchen features new appliances, including dishwasher and gas stove, with ample storage for the avid cook. Off the kitchen and beside the back door is a conveniently located separate toilet. The main bathroom is lined with clever, anti-mould laminate and features a spacious shower and vanity. Bedrooms one and two both enjoy the comforts of ceiling fans, ducted air-conditioning and abundant natural light, with bed one king-size and bed two queen-size. The living room is quite substantial and built in a clever ‘L’ shape, allowing for a smaller nook to the side which could be easily used as a study. This room also offers two ceiling fans and a gas heater. The main bedroom is the real feature of number eight. More than king-size, the mas-

ter has ample natural light, ceiling fan and a walk in robe that stretches across the length of the bedroom, complete with breathable racks throughout. The ensuite is equally impressive in size. With separate toilet, huge vanity, substantial shower and luxurious spa, it’s safe to say this area will always be utilised to its full potential. The backyard of this home opens up to a classy courtyard with small verandah and gated section to manage the fourlegged members of the family. The garden, while wellestablished is not high maintenance, and offers an attractive fernery located at the side of the house. Last, but not least, 8 Pollard Street also harbours a large shed, the front of which is used as a laundry due to its ample space. The back could be used as your heart desires!

Good news on rates DESPITE all the optimism which accompanied the growth in Melbourne house prices late last year, there have been signs that the market may slow in 2014. So it was good news that the Reserve Bank maintained interest rates at their record low, as announced earlier this month. Low interest rates mean smaller mortgage repayments and give buyers, especially those entering the market for the first time, the chance to get a foot on the property ladder without the stress of financial struggle. Though regional house prices show healthy growth in some parts of the state there are still many affordable areas and the interest rate stability will support confidence in home buyers and investors.
As the year gets underway, buyers can house-hunt with greater certainty, with rates in their seventh month at the current level. While the past year was about housing market recovery, which the REIV expects to continue in the first quarter this year, we have seen signs that consumer sentiment has been slowing. In addition, employment conditions have weakened in some parts of the state, and the Victorian economy as a whole is experiencing only slow growth. But agents in key regional centres such as Geelong remain positive. New employment opportunities are arising, and governments are conscious of the need to support the harbour city and other key regional centres.
In Bendigo, for instance, projects including the New Bendigo Hospital project are gearing up. There has also been a decline in the Australian dollar in recent months, which has been welcomed, helping to make Victoria’s export businesses more competitive. The impact of the low interest rates throughout 2013 took some time to flow through to the market - with growth in both Melbourne and regional house prices only taking place in the final few months of last year. In Melbourne it is the middle and outer suburbs which showed the greatest growth in the final quarter of 2013. As the city spread continues, more commuters are considering regional centres such as Geelong and Bendigo, and
towns along the rail links, as an affordable and highly viable housing option. The Reserve Bank decision will clearly be a great help to buyers in the first quarter of this year and we hope that the banks will respect this decision - and help buyers by either reducing interest rates or keeping their rates on hold.
Confidence is building A HAT-TRICK of factors have combined to lift confidence further in Albury’s housing market, according to one of Australia’s biggest home builders. New figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show banks are lending more money to more customers keen to build their dream home compared to last year’s figures. The number of new mortgage approvals for construction in New South Wales is up 13 per cent and the value of these mortgages is up 12 per cent compared to the previous year.
Chris Moscher, director of G.J. Gardner Homes in Albury says the new home loan figures coupled with a 13-month rise in private sector housing approval - up nearly 16 per cent in 2013 and a static 2.5 per cent interest rate will boost Albury’s housing market. “This hat-trick of factors have put some real oomph into Albury’s housing market, paving the way for more people to build their own homes,” Mr Moscher said. “It’s an exciting time. Banks are lending more, interest rates remain low and approvals for
new homes show no sign of slowing. The outlook for those wanting to build a home in Albury is very good.” The new lending figures show a total of 1,022 mortgages worth $318 million were awarded for the construction of homes across New South Wales in December 2013. That compared to 842 mortgages for construction worth $268 million in December 2012. “These are signs that the industry has turned a corner and home builders have every reason to be optimistic,” Mr Moscher concluded.

Monday night’s game of division one under 14 boys was a regular scheduled round against Trinity Tidal Waves, but a great chance for SS&A Boomers president and coach Peter Penny to take stock of what has been achieved in such a short time. “They’re only in their first season at being a division one side, so they’re on a pretty steep learning curve,” he said. “They did get beaten by a very welltrained side in the Trinity boys - the Trinity boys have a lot of rep players. “The bigger picture is we’re a club under the SS&A banner. We’re building the club. We’ve gone from probably around three or four teams to pushing past 15, so we’re beginning to get our teams up through the divisions. “We basically reformed the committee not even 12 months ago and we came in at the tail end of last summer and into the winter season. We’re now probably close to around that 120-130 kids with our club network. It’s quite a substantial build-up.” Mr Penny said between dedicated organisers, parents and players, the aim to have teams in all divisions is well within sight. “We have a really good nucleus - every team we have has coaches and team managers and we try and run up to nine kids per side,” he said. “The big thing is we’re trying to get all our sides into the division one ranks and get players into representative sides.
Trinity Tidal Waves vs SS&A Boomers. “Basketball had lost a little bit of momentum over the last couple of years and they’ve formed a new committee at the junior level. “We’re beginning to see we need to bring basketball back into being a family thing. We’re finally getting kids coming back into basketball saying ‘this is my preferred sport,’ rather than something that was probably a bit lower on the list. “What’s changed is gaining a good commitment from both the kids that we have and the parents. We need parents to scoreboard, to keep the kids on track so they’re there each week and when we run training sessions as we do as a club,
we get them to participate as well. “It’s what our club is about. “We have a number of kids that have been working with Midnight Basketball and because the SS&A Club has the involvement there, we’re looking to try and bring a couple of those kids back into the ranks of the teams. “We’re hoping to fund a few of these kids when they go away because it costs a lot of money - it’s a big expense. “Without our sponsorship our club would not be where it is today. We need sponsorship support as all sports do in this part of the community.”

They’re regatta ready By KRYSTEN MANUEL BRAVEHEARTS are gearing up for the widely anticipated Dragon Boat Regatta at the start of next month, with training well under way. Bravehearts Dragon Boat Club co-ordinator Pauline Harbick said the first training session last weekend was specifically for teams from community and corporate groups and fetched a fantastic turnout. “We had 21 teams attend that’s over 400 paddlers! she said. “The training is all about safety, but it’s to make the teams competitive as well. “So we teach them all the safety elements and how to paddle because many of them have never been in a dragon boat and many of them don’t know what a dragon boat actually is. “They all had a wonderful time. We had lots of great feedback and people really enjoyed being active and learning something new. Ms Harbick said the sport particularly lent itself to corporate groups. “It’s a good leveller, especially for a corporate group because
everybody starts from the same point, she said. “So even if you have a manager and their newest employee, it wipes away all that seniority and structure. The training is set in place for the regatta on 1 and 2 March, with community and corporate teams racing on the Saturday. “On that day we will also have a competition where cancer survivor teams from across Victoria and also from Wagga will race, Ms Harbick said. “We have a remembrance ceremony on the Saturday where we remember those who have lost their battle. It’s a beautiful ceremony and people are welcome to come and watch. The idea behind the Bravehearts Dragon Boat Regatta was born out of research into breast cancer, where it was found a substantial difference could be made in the recovery time and survival rate for breast cancer survivors if they participated in upper body strength and conditioning. “We use the regatta as a fundraiser, but primarily we do it to thank our community for our support and show them what we do, how we operate to let them know who we are.
FOR those who want to get active, want to be social but aren’t quite up to joining the graded ranks of netball, volleyball and basketball, mixed teams could be just your ticket! AlburyCity leisure facilities team leader Michael Stanton took the opportunity to tell NewsWeekly about the quickly growing popularity of mixed sports. NW: “When and what does the Lauren Jackson Sports Stadium offer in terms of mixed sports? MS: “The mixed netball competition is a regular Monday night fixture. We have mixed volleyball,
mixed netball and mixed basketball. NW: “When does the season start? MS: “We normally have two competitions throughout the year a summer and winter competition. The summer competition commences in late January/ February and the winter season starts in July. NW: “Who can play? MS: “Typically it’s people aged 16 and up, men and women. NW: “How do you get involved?
