WELL DONE NOOSA

L L I W S L R I G E M O S DO ANYTHING…

FOR A GOOD CAUSE!

Noosa-based Jally Entertainment is about to hit the road with the outrageous comedy Calendar Girls - travelling through five Australian states with 56 performances in 46 different venues! But before they go, for one night only, you can catch the show at The Majestic Theatre in Pomona on Saturday, March 8, at 8pm. With a cast and crew of 13 people, this tour is the largest production to be constructed by Jally Entertainment. The travel and accommodation logistics alone have been months in the planning with the cast now in rehearsals for this very exciting venture. Calendar Girls – starring Marion Johnson, Alli Pope-Bailey, Blossom Goodchild, Yvie Somerville, Madison Thew-Keyworth, Rachel Hunt, Brianna Schlect, Liz Blackett, John Sayles, Ian Hodson and Harry Bayliss – will open at the Events Centre Caloundra on Friday, March 7, before heading to Pomona, and then out of town. Based on the true story of 11 Women’s Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research

Fund, Calendar Girls became the fastest selling play in British theatre history, received the What’s On Stage Award for Best New Comedy in 2010 and is now a worldwide comedy hit! In this version, when Annie’s husband John dies from leukaemia, she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an “alternative” calendar. With their modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements, and a little help from the hospital porter and an amateur photographer, they complete their calendar. The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales (UK). The calendar is a huge success, but Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. To catch this must-see before it leaves town book your tickets online at www.majestictheatre.com.au or phone 5485 2330 for more information.

During a flying visit on Tuesday morning, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli gave his stamp of approval on the progress made since Noosa became an independent council on January 1 this year. Preferring a more hands-on approach, Mr Crisafulli met with Mayor Noel Playford, Noosa councillors, CEO Brett de Chastel and Noosa MP Glen Elmes early in Tewantin, even taking the time to sample a local pie for breakfast. “I wanted to visit in person. I didn’t visit in January because I wanted them [Council] to deliver their own budget without me interfering and they have done that and done a

are a great asset to recreational boat ramps helping to reduce congestion and allowing for ease of boat launching, especially in busy times. “They are also very helpful for children and elderly users entering and exiting their vessels at the ramp.” The work will be carried out by Coast contractor, PJM (Civil) and should be finished by mid-year, weather permitting. As the ramp will remain closed while works are underway, boat owners and other watercraft users can access the adjacent ramp opposite Thomas Street.

Local boaties scored a win this week, with work to begin on upgrading the Albert Street boat ramp.

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the boat ramp at Noosaville was being rebuilt with funds from the Newman Government’s $50 million Marine Infrastructure Capital and Maintenance Program. “The vital Albert Street boating facility was in need of an upgrade so I’m really pleased to see works underway on what will be a welcome upgrade for the community,” Mr Elmes said. “As part of the $380,000 project, we’re rebuilding the boat ramp with two lanes, as well as building a floating walkway adjacent to the upstream edge of the ramp. Time out sought for broiler farm Controversial show this, Mr Milligan and Cooroy surveyor, Max Waterson, met Kerri Coyle, Co-ordinator of Planning and Assessment, and other council officers last Friday. While Mr Milligan declined to make any comment to Noosa Today, it is understood he has asked for up to three months to submit a new infrastructure proposal and further odour modelling. The broiler farm application calls for eight large sheds (100m to 130m long and 16m wide) to house 250,000 chicks which after six to nine weeks are then processed for chicken meat

JIM FAGAN Long-time West Cooroy farmer David Milligan has asked Noosa Council for time to supply additional information about his application to establish a poultry farm on his avocado property at Top Forestry Road, Ridgewood.

Last December Sunshine Coast Council decided to defer a decision on the application to Noosa Council for consideration and, in response to

off site. After a two week cleaning up period the cycle starts again. The application has created considerable controversy with protest public meetings in Cooroy last year. According to No Broiler Farm Cooroy spokesperson Rod Ritchie, “It appears Council planning staff are being lenient with time limits on this application since it has straddled two Council jurisdictions.” “If this application gets moving again, we will start planning a fresh campaign to ensure it is rejected by Council.”

New Peregian Village Market mid next year? a small supermarket, with speciality tenancies which include outdoor dining amenities and service area and car parking. According to the group’s managing director and local resident, Tony Scanlon, the Village Market will be located on the former caravan park site on the western side of David Low Way, directly opposite Peregian Village. “We’ve got current approval and in December we made a new application to the council to put the supermarket on our site, something we’ve always envisaged. We’ve been working on the design since April last year. “We’ve been very thoughtful about the design. We’re local people and want to make sure that what we do keeps the look and feel of Peregian, keeps the Peregian personality “We’re talking to the community

JIM FAGAN Scanlon Property Group will be ready to open its revised Peregian Village Market at Peregian Beach mid-next year if Noosa Council approves its application.

And while local action group, Peregian Beach Community Association, has not yet made a formal decision, vice president Barry Cotterell told Noosa Today: “You can certainly say there is a lot of community support.” The Scanlon Group’s application is now being studied by council officers. It asks for a material change of use permit as the first stage of its already approved Essence of Peregian development. It is now seeking a revised development which includes

association and the business association. We think it is a really good outcome to link our site with the village because we consider ourselves part of the village. We’re the western side of the village and connected by the pedestrian crossing. Mr Scanlon said the aim was to be ready to go when the current supermarket on the corner of Heron Street and Kingfisher Drive closes so that “the community has a supermarket facility. We’ve been working closely with the developer of that project, Dave Maloney.” Mr Maloney of Dave Maloney Investments P/L said the present supermarket site would be redeveloped to include a ground floor fresh produce market by day with a restaurant and bar and night. There would be office space on the second floor and a rooftop terrace garden.

Hit-and-run driver in court JOLENE OGLE A man faced court on Tuesday charged over a hit-and-run incident from October last year that left a boy in a critical condition. The incident occurred when the man was allegedly riding a motorbike and tried to overtake a fourwheel drive stopped at a pedestrian crossing on Gympie Terrace, Noosaville on October 11, 2013. The rider of the motorbike clipped the side mirror of the vehi-

cle before colliding with a father and son, nine, and then fled the scene on foot after the bike wouldn’t start. Both victims were taken to Nambour Hospital and the boy is suspected to have sustained a fractured skull. The man has been charged with six offences, including two counts of dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident, one count of obstructing the police and one count of driving without a licence. The man will reappear in Noosa Magistrates Court on March 25, and is expected to enter a plea of guilty.

Sheep Thrills

DRINK DRIVING Noosa Magistrates Court was inundated with a flood of drink and drug driving charges on Tuesday, for the second week in a row. A total of 13 people appeared to face 15 charges of drink driving with blood alcohol readings ranging from 0.083 per cent to 0.186 per cent. Three people were charged with driving while a relevant drug was in their blood or saliva. Two of the offenders, a man and woman from Tewantin, were fined $400 and disqualified from driving for four months.

Producer and director Sally Lattin and PR Manager Julie Fullerton

JOLENE OGLE It’s been described as controversial and antimen, performed in over 140 countries, translated into 48 languages and enjoyed worldwide, sell-out tours - now The Vagina Monologues is coming to Noosa.

Written by Eve Ensler and first performed in 1996, The Vagina Monologues is 11 monologues performed by women and based on real-life interviews, interspersed with facts and comedic narrative. The play covers myriad topics and themes in different ways from the funny to the sad, and explores what it means to be a woman, female sexuality and relationships. Producer and director Sally Lattin said while the name of the production may shock some people, the show is all about creating an environment where “the topic of women’s sexuality can be talked about”. “There’s so much underbelly attached to the word. It triggers all sorts of responses from people, from tears welling up in their eyes, to stuttering to having to leave the room,” she said. “There’s still today, even in 2014, people who cringe when they hear the word ‘vagina’, and it’s not just be-

cause of the way the word sounds, it’s all the associations around women’s sexuality and what it means to be a lady, or a decent woman, or a proper kind of girl.” Ms Lattin said the play aims to dispel the taboo association with women’s sexuality, but just as importantly, the play is a protest against the violence experienced by woman and children. “It’s a way of not only giving woman a voice to speak about their own issues but to take a stance against violence,” she said. Ms Lattin said she decided to bring the controversial play to Noosa after two successful performances in Maleny. “Once (the show) was seen to be popular in Maleny, and the girls decided to tour it, we hit the road,” she said. The Vagina Monologues will show at Maleny Community Centre for two encore performances before heading to The J, Noosa, and then onto the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane. Tickets are available now for shows on Friday, March 14, from 7.30pm and the matinee on Saturday, March 15, from 2pm at The J and start from $34 for concession and $38.50 for general admission. YOUR GUIDE TO NOOSA’S BIOSPHERE RESERVE JIM FAGAN Last month Noosa Council decided it wanted to encourage greater community participation in Noosa Volunteer Steven Boyd with Biosphere Ltd Biosphere information sheets (NBL) and local people and groups were invited to write down their thoughts and ideas and send them to Council CEO Brett de Chastel. Closing date is this Monday.

As Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot said, “We want to hear from people who have a big picture of the way we should be living and working in our environment, and then we want to hear some smart ideas about how all of that should be managed.” At Noosa Today we thought the council’s call had a lot of merit so we decided to do a survey of people in the street asking if they knew what the Biosphere Reserve was all about and if they had any ideas for the council. It came as a bit of a shock to learn few could answer our question. To help our readers understand it more, and how important it is, we asked NBL Chair, Dr Sue Davis, communications director, Carolyn Beaton, and Cath Withyman, author of NBL’s recent Sustainable Tourism Industry Project, to put together this practical guide for those who live here and those who come to visit.

WHAT IS A BIOSPHERE RESERVE? UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, like World Heritage status, recognises places around the world that have outstanding natural environments but Biosphere Reserves also include communities working towards living sustainably. HOW AND WHEN DID NOOSA GET INVOLVED? The application for Biosphere Reserve status was championed and prepared by Noosa Council and in September 2007 Noosa was afforded Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO. The following year Noosa Biosphere Limited (NBL) was established.

The Sentinel Lake

HOW MANY IN QUEENSLAND AND THE WORLD? There are two Biosphere Reserves in Queensland - the other is the Great Sandy Biosphere Reserve, 14 in Australia and, globally, 610 Biosphere Reserves in 117 countries. ARE THEY ALL RUN BY VOLUNTEERS LIKE THAT OF NOOSA? Biosphere Reserves are often managed by professionals who are employed by Government in natural resource management roles. Noosa is an exception. We have 60 volunteers across the various

community sector boards supported by a professional secretariat funded by Council. Occasionally we use professional contractors.

gered and vulnerable species, such as the koala and the Richmond Birdwing butterfly, by driving slower through wildlife habitats, reducing fishing line litter, and keeping wildlife rescue emergency numbers in your wallet.

Use your own steam: Most of Noosa Noosa Junction, Noosaville and Tewantin can easily be explored without a car. Instead walk, ride or paddle – there are many great walking and cycling tracks in the Noosa area or hire a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore our magnificent waterways. Car hire – choose hybrid: If you choose to hire a car to explore the diverse Noosa Biosphere hinterland region, then choose a hybrid car. Not only will you be sending a positive message to the car industry, you will use less fuel, saving you money.

Be inspired – by art and others: Enjoy art inspired by the environment or art as it occurs in the environment. The Noosa Biosphere Reserve is home to the Biennial Floating Land Festival, the annual Noosa Biosphere Art prize and many other local art events.

Reduce your laundry: Laundry consumes a large percentage of hotels’ energy for hot water. Be willing to use your towels and sheets for more than one day and help hotels to reduce their energy use.

Compost: Recycling your organic and green waste gives you your own 100 per cent organic fertiliser, which will improve your garden soil, its water retention and the vigour of your plants.

Recycle your guide books and brochures or use an App: If you collect information brochures and guidebooks, return them at the end of your stay or leave them in your room for the next guest to enjoy. Also, check out some of the local apps available to help you navigate, plan and enjoy your time in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Festival prompts Jose’s 42-day stay PHIL JARRATT The Poms are lurking in Coolum and Byron Bay, waiting for the swell to come up, but the first official international arrival in Noosa was on February 12, all the way from Oporto, Portugal.

Over 50s competitor Jose Pedro Marcos flew in for his first ever Noosa Surf Festival with his mother, Virginia (“Zizete) Marcos, to begin a 42-day stay. “I have been dreaming of coming to this event for many years, Jose told Noosa Today. “Friends have been telling me about it and I have seen the photos and the videos for more than a decade, but always there has been a reason I could not come – obligations with my work or other travel plans. Now I am here, I can see with my own eyes that it is a very beautiful place. All we need is some surf! Neither Jose nor Zizete has been to Australia before, and Zizete plans to take time out from Noosa to visit the Sydney Opera House and other attractions. But for Jose, this holiday is a Noosa mission. “I want to meet the local surfers, get to know the town, and most importantly, experience those beautiful waves on the points. Jose, 51, has worked in real estate development in his home town, and also in the surf industry, running surf schools. A year-round surfer most of his life, he admits that Oporto’s cold winters these days force him to “surf indoors at the gym.

“Europe was cold and stormy when we left, and now this, he exclaims, taking in a beautiful, sunny afternoon at First Point. “We are very happy to be here. It’s been unseasonally flat for a week. Jose has 35 days left and counting. Pray for surf! YOUR TOWN YOUR PAPER

CATCHING UP: From left, Cr Joe Jurisevic, Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli, Cr Frank Wilkie, Mayor Noel Playford, Noosa MP Glen Elmes, Cr Frank Pardon and Cr Sandy Bolton FROM PAGE 1 “There are still a few little issues to sort out but they have overwhelmingly sorted out most issues themselves. And that’s a credit not just to the Noosa Transfer Manager but also to the Sunshine Coast Council. We got a good result.” Mr Crisafulli said Tuesday’s meeting was largely about looking to the future. “How does Noosa see itself fitting in with the Queensland plan? I want to make sure that when we are crafting up the new planning scheme we get the sort of development we want. It has to be on Noo-

sa’s own terms but it also has to create opportunities for jobs,” he said. “It’s a tough balance for everybody, between keeping what makes you special - and Noosa has many endearing qualities - but we still need a place where people can live, work and play.” Mr Crisafulli was this week visiting all four new councils - Noosa, Livingstone, Mareeba and Douglas. He said they were all tackling the big issues of their communities and it was important for him to learn of them firsthand. “To wind back the destruction of Labor’s forced amalgamations,

wherever viable, was one of this government’s major election commitments and the transition of these councils is proof we’ve delivered,” he said. “The challenge for these councils now is to build on the strong community support and create organisations that are both responsible and viable. “The State has made it clear our vision is to grow a strong economy while preserving the things that make individual communities special. We will work at a grassroots level to ensure this occurs.” Noosa Mayor Noel Playford

welcomed Mr Crisafulli’s visit. “He came to find out how things were going, to discuss a few issues, to encourage us, and to offer whatever assistance we need to make sure we are able to do everything possible for this community,” he said. “He’s a very enthusiastic Local Government Minister and he’s determined that councils understand that if we need support, he is there, but he also believes in the independence of councils and won’t tell us what to do.” Mayor Playford said the likelihood of boundary changes to bring Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale into the Noosa Shire was not discussed. “The impetus will have to come from the community, not from Council,” he said. Mr Crisafulli said if the change was to occur, it would be at the next local government elections, in 2016. “For it to happen there has to be agreement between the two councils. If that is agreed, and the community is on board, then it comes to me and I make the decision whether to pass it to the boundary commissioner. “One thing I’ve found through the de-amalgamation process is that the secret is to let local people decide. I’d love to say it was all down to me but it wasn’t. When you put local people in the driving seat and you trust people, good decisions are made.”

Noosa Council turns green

Noosa CEO Brett de Chastel, centre, with Alan Rogers and Martin Drydale

Not only is their logo green but the staff are, too! Bike racks at the council offices are once again filling up as Noosa Council staff no longer have the long commute to Nambour, Maroochydore and Caloundra for work. Council’s new CEO Brett de Chastel hopes to see this trend continue and for staff to think about commuting to work by bike. On February 13 more than a dozen staff donned their bike helmets and rode to work, including Mr de Chastel and Directors Alan (Fox) Rogers and Martin Drydale.

Leading by example, Brett said: “Cycling to work is a great way to start the day. Noosa has excellent on-road and off road cycling facilities making it easy to leave the car at home and ride instead, if one is fit and able. It’s fun, free, and it’s good for the individual and the environment.” Fox Rogers, Council’s Director of Community and Development, travelled approximately 500 kilometres each week between commuting to work and travelling across the region to meetings during his time with Sunshine Coast Council. Fox is thrilled to be able to leave the car at home and enjoy the journey to work by cycling 12 km to work and back instead.

Shock statistics boost RYDA program ISOBEL COLEMAN The biggest killer of young drivers is speeding and around 80 per cent of those killed are male.

This is just one of the shocking statistics surrounding young drivers in Australia today. It’s also one of the reasons local Rotary clubs are determined to put as many youngsters as possible through their youth driving awareness program, RYDA. Australia’s Young Driver Factbase – an initiative of the George Institute – reveals that a 17 year old driver with a P1 licence is four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than a driver over 26 years. On top of that, 45 per cent of all young Australian injury deaths are due to road traffic crashes. In fact, drivers aged 17 to 25 years represent one-quarter of all Australian road deaths – yet they only make up 10 to 15 per cent of the licensed driver population. RYDA spokeswoman Tess Alexandroff told Noosa Today that the program was about to embark on its sixth year in its endeavour to “save lives”. “All four Rotary Clubs of Noosa have been very focused on this, contacting all

schools in our district from Coolum up to Cooroy,” Tess said. “Last year’s attendance from the schools of Year 11 and 12 students was disappointing, that’s why we are very determined to raise the participation rate of eligible students from 35 per cent up to 80 or 90 per cent this year. “If we can just save one life then it has all been worthwhile.” The group is particularly focussing on disadvantaged students and is offering incentives through the schools to enable more students to attend the program. “According to a survey taken from the students and teachers directly after the program on the day, 95 per cent of teachers thought the RYDA program should be a compulsory course for all senior High School students,” Tess said. “Engagement in this program is a vital step to take to make sure all young drivers are alert and aware of the hazards of driving.” Parents and School Principals are encouraged to contact Rotary for more information on how to get students involved in the program. Phone Tess on 0407 377 210 or email tessalexandroff@gmail.com

‘It’s demeaning and embarrassing’ Councillor Sandy Bolton has labelled the name of the Federal Government’s Work for the Dole scheme “demeaning” and “embarrassing”.

Originally implemented in 1997, the “Work for the Dole” (WFTD) scheme aims to get long-term unemployed people actively participating in work activities by working in local community organisations and councils. The Abbott government last month announced an “enhanced” version of the original WFTD scheme, which focussed on equipping job seekers with “soft skills” such as punctuality and is due to start next financial year. But Cr Bolton said while she supported any scheme that helped people find employment, she found the terminology “work for the dole” to be “demeaning” and “embarrassing for these participants”. Instead, Cr Bolton suggested a change of name for participants to “Community Service Officers” and for any benefits paid to be considered wages for hours worked in the community. “In essence, the term ‘unemployed’ would become obsolete, as the period prior to becoming a Community Service worker would be classified as ‘job transition’,” she said. The scheme could also help with

getting the Noosa Shire back into “tip top” condition through construction works such as pathways and park maintenance, Cr Bolton said. But, United Synergies’ CEO Christopher John said it may not be a good time to reintroduce the WFTD scheme. Mr John said while the scheme had the potential to provide an opportunity for people to re-engage in the workforce and re-learn essential skills, many long-term unemployed people faced other issues that could be barriers to employment. Challenges also arise in the expectation of organisations such as United Synergies to support the program by providing activities for WFTD participants, Mr John said. “As a not for profit (organisation), we work within very stringent funding requirements and have very limited capacity to employ additional skilled workers to supervise ‘unskilled volunteer’ roles within our organisation or for ‘community benefit’ projects,” he said. Mr John said it was a common misconception that community organisations have many unskilled roles that WFTD participants could take part in. “The reality is that many, in fact the vast majority of our roles, are specialised, skilled or require significant experience,” Mr John said.

Noosaville School’s French treats coming to Noosa sign of the times and now we’re happy to support the annual Reader’s Cup and inter-school debating competitions, the chess club, music programs and, of course, the sign at the school, as well as sponsorship of the Life Ed van as it visits Noosaville and surrounding schools. These sponsorships will continue in earnest and we look forward to furthering these associations this year,” Wayne said.

Owners Eric and Francoise Pernoud said they love having their café in the Wattle Street Complex, Cooroy, and wouldn’t dream of leaving the place they have called home for nearly four years. “We love Cooroy,” Francoise said. “It may not have all the shops

like Noosa, but it is so peaceful and charming. We love having our business here.” Francoise confirmed they are looking for a shop front in Noosa, but said it would be a smaller version of what they offer in Cooroy. “We would still make everything in Cooroy at our café, but people living in Noosa would be able to enjoy our food,” she said. Francoise said they are currently looking for a shop front in Noosaville, close to Noosa River.

“We’re all excited about 2014 and I know there are some very proud school leaders who are keen to do our school proud in our grounds but also in our community. This year we’re asking our students to be the best they can be in 2014. We’re all excited to that message up on our school sign every day and it’s great to see so many parents and carers playing active roles in the many different facets of our school,” Mary said. The school’s 2014 leaders are Caley Dwyer, Sam Murphy (School Captains) Abby Sturgess, Chloe Blain, Ewan McDonald, Annika Taylor Tessa West and Hayley Williams (Vice Captains). As for the positive messaging from the school, many travelers along Beckmans Road are already aware the school’s electronic sign keeps the many passersby informed about the latest activities in and around the school. “We’re growing with a growing community, and the programs availa-

ble within the school and the support the students receive along the way is really impressive,” Mary said. The school sign is sponsored by Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank, and it’s just one of the many ways in which the branch supports the school. Branch manager Wayne Hoens was on hand to meet the new leaders. “Our relationship with Noosaville State School started some years ago

Student leaders Fun run a fundraiser for chosen at Cooroy farmers After an exhaustive and challenging selection process that began late last year, Cooroy State School has chosen its student leaders for 2014.

Receiving their badges in front of family and friends, the students were addressed by Officer in Charge Sgt Mal Scott. Sgt Scott spoke of the importance of being a positive role model and also encouraged the younger students to aspire to be school leaders.

School captains Nicole Barker, Lillie Mellin, Charlie-Anne Pope and Tess Davies made their first speech as student leaders and spoke of their honour in being chosen. School Principal Des Deighton said he looked forward to working with the new school captains and vice captains, student council presidents, sports captains and class captains, “to make our great school an even better place.”

St Andrew’s Anglican College will be donating all proceeds from its recent charity fun run to the Buy a Bale program in Central Queensland.

Des Deighton, Sgt Mal Scott and Karina Honeywell with the elected students

Families were asked to show their love on Valentine’s Day by participating in the event and “showing our farmers that even though we might be a long distance away, we do care,” said St Andrew’s spokeswoman Sue Sagar. And starting the race was Tim McGavin, a new parent at the college who has family in drought-stricken Longreach. The event attracted around 550 participants and the college hopes to raise more than $5000, thanks to the family barbecue held after the race, and the raffle, which received great support from local businesses. Raffle tickets are on sale until tomorrow, Friday.

Leo the Lionheart’s $10,500 fundraiser Vicki and Craig Sinclair

WORDS & PICTURES: JIM FAGAN Little Leo Ellis, mum and dad, Lisa and Campbell and grandparents, Deb and Terry Mooney, were among the 70-plus wellwishers who turned up to support Leo and the HeartKids’ fundraiser at Lions Park last Saturday.

Recently we told how death was little more than a heartbeat away for Leo due to a congenital heart defect and how in the first five months of his life he had five major heart operations, including open heart surgery. We reported how the charity HeartKids had been a huge help to the Ellis family and Lisa and Campbell wanted to give something back, hence the fundraiser. Mum Lisa was over the moon. “It’s just gone from strength to strength. We started out thinking we would aim for $2,000 but thanks to the support of Noosa Today and so many other friends, it will be definitely more than $10,500.” Grandparents Deb and Terry came from Tamworth for the fundraiser. Said Terry, “I’m overwhelmed. The support has been amazing.”

Network President Michalle Faulkner said she was excited to welcome Ms Beachley to the Coast to deliver her presentation, focusing on “inspiring change”, this year’s theme for International Women’s Day celebrations across the globe. “This breakfast is one of the most popular events on our annual calendar and Layne will not only bring her story of her incredible surfing achievements but also share the reason she’s so highly regarded for her tireless charity work and commitment to assisting Australian women to achieve their dreams,” Ms Faulkner said. “We feel very privileged to have Layne coming to speak for us; she is a true inspi-

AT WHAT COST? Noosa Councillors currently present themselves as upholders of the Noosa Planning Scheme and use this as a basis for rejection of several current development applications before Council. It is of concern that some of the current Noosa Councillors are prepared to flaunt the Noosa Planning Scheme when it suits. Several supported the failed Petrac Northshore Resort development despite the fact that it had 300 per cent greater floor area than the planning scheme allowed. One wonders how the Petrac development was approved by an anti-development Council when the proposal was quite clearly outside Noosa’s Planning Scheme.

LESS THAN IMPARTIAL I would like to draw Steve Hall’s attention to a book by Canadian author Donna Laframboise called The Delinquent Teenager who was mistaken for the World’s Top Climate Scientist. The book is an exposé on the under qualified and misdirected personnel who constitute the much vaunted Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change. It serves to illustrate how vacuous the claims of this body will turn out to be. For those who quote from the

releases of this body should appreciate that for a large part the research has been carried out by underqualified and less than impartial research personnel.

SIMON GAMBLE Noosa Heads

NATURAL DYNAMICS Research conducted in 1999 at the Jet Propulsion Lab, Cal Tech, by J Dickey et al and sponsored by NASA and NOAA shows that El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events are caused by large-scale variations in the dynamics of the global atmosphere-ocean system. They involve exchanges of rotational momentum between the Earth’s core, the hydrosphere and the atmosphere and have nothing to do with the trace gas CO2. Steve Hall (NT Feb 6) is correct when he says that the IPCC models did not predict the super ENSO event with a peak in surface temperature that occurred in 1998. However, Dickey’s research has shown that it is possible to predict ENSO events from measurements of the Earth’s dynamics. The IPCC models also did not predict the current pause in global temperatures that has now lasted for 17 years. According to Steve Hall, the world’s hottest year 1998 is not a problem because if you just remove it from the record, then an upward

trend in global temperatures is miraculously revealed. The IPCC models are saved! This is not how physicists analyse data. Scientists are trained to identify patterns in the data. The instrumental global temperature record from 18502013 exhibits patterns, with periods and harmonics similar to those in the motions of the Sun and the major planets (N Scafetta; Earth- Science Reviews; v126; 2013). Scafetta proposed a solar/planetary model to explain the patterns in the global temperature record and compared its output with the IPCC models. The solar model was not only superior in explaining the record from 1850 but also in explaining the climate changes which occurred during the previous millennium; something the IPCC models have failed to do. The work of many astrophysicists indicates that climate change is a natural phenomenon driven by the dynamics of the Sun and the solar system.

JOHN TURNER Noosa Heads THAT’S NOT SERVICE Recently I had need to request a company to re-pair a sliding door, re-placing a fly screen door and a half window with new fly screen. I was perfectly happy with the workman-

ship but then the account subsequently came in. The cost of repairs came to $52, plus labour $74, making a sub-total of $126. Then I saw an extra item: call out fee $59, sub-total $185. (GST, including call out fee, was $16.82). Grand total $185. I am amazed with the amount charged for the call out fee, but to then pay GST on it makes a mockery of the word SERVICE.

fers to actions and things regarded as unsustainable, but that we don’t hear about. Some examples of these “unsustainables” are private property, agriculture, use of fossil fuels, building materials, ski runs, livestock grazing, industrial activities, paved roads, railways, aquaculture, pipelines, power lines, synthetic drugs, fisheries and golf courses. Do we really want to eliminate all of those from our lives?

OFF THE MARK Steve Hall’s strident criticism of those of your readers who do not share his views on climate change (NT, Jan 23) was way off the mark. There are many Australians - perhaps even a majority - who accept that climate change is a reality but, given the lack of action internationally, see nothing to be gained by (to put it crudely) p*****g against the wind.

I HAVE QUESTIONS Why hasn’t the cost of redundancies been made public? Many millions will have to be added to the cost of de-amalgamation. Can Noosa afford to reject the development proposals currently before council? Apart from legal costs, small business needs support. Is council reinventing the past? Since when is an upgrade, retrograde? Will there be another Petrac? What’s really behind the urgent need to change the structure of the Biosphere’s governance? When will the CEO publicly report council’s limitations under the revamp?

NON-STOP In the mood for some big screen action? Non-Stop has it all – hijacking, a bomb, blackmail and an impressive cast, topped by Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore.

This French-American movie takes place on an international flight from New York to London. During the flight, US federal air marshal Bill Marks (Neeson) receives a series of threatening text messages, stating that a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes unless $150 million is transferred into a secret bank account. When the bank account is discovered to be under Marks’ name and a bomb is found aboard the plane, Marks is branded as a hijacker.

Summer might be coming to an end, but the Noosa live music scene is set to sizzle this weekend with stacks of great gigs on offer.

Aussie music icon Pete Murray will perform tonight, Thursday, as part of the 10th anniversary tour of his debut album Feeler. Along with his band of muso brothers, Pete will be reliving the magic of the classic Aussie rock album that so many Australians love. You can catch Pete at the Villa Noosa, Noosaville, from 7.30pm the perfect way to start the weekend early. Tickets are available now at Ticketmaster for $42 or $50 at the door. Tewantin-Noosa RSL kicks off

tonight at 7pm with Rocking Topz, then tomorrow from 8pm, you can catch The U2 Show - Achtung Baby. These boys are one of the best tribute bands around, delivering a two-hour performance of U2’s greatest hits, incorporating costume changes and mind-blowing visual effects as seen in actual U2 concerts. If you’re looking to relax after a week of work, then Sunshine Beach Surf Club offers local roots band OKA on Saturday – guaranteed to melt away that stress with their super cool tunes. Now a staple on the local music scene, OKA have performed at music festivals around the country and are regulars at the free monthly event, Peregian Originals.

Art at Pomona Award-winning local artist Pam Black will showcase her work in a solo exhibition at the Pomona Railway art gallery, from February 15.

Named “Home awe Away”, the exhibition will demonstrate Pam’s love of painting and is inspired by living on 17 acres of natural bushland juxtaposed against her travels to Europe. Pam said she likes to walk through and photograph the creek on her Hinterland property, highlighting geometric shapes formed by the pat-

terned tree trunks, branches and rock faces. Drawn to detail, Pam said she likes to zoom in and paint focal points, creating glimpses into her perspective of nature. The selection of ‘tourist paintings’ in the exhibition are close-up glimpses of Pam’s time spent travelling Europe; the stained glass windows of Notre Dame and the colourful Monet’s garden in Giverney all feature in bright bold pieces. The exhibition opening will be held at the Pomona Railway art gallery on February 15 at 2pm.

Gongs for two old goofies LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT

Frantic preparations for the surf festival kept me from attending the Surfing Australia Awards night in Manly last week, but I’m sure two old goofies who were in the limelight could still hear the cheers of another old goofy from a thousand kilometres away.

First up, Narrabeen’s Col Smith was inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame, a long overdue honour for the incredible lip-smacking rubberman. When I first moved to Sydney in 1970 and started surfing the lefts at North Narrabeen midweek, there was invariably one guy who got every set wave. He didn’t take them, people just gave way to him. He was a big, gruff, tough Aussie bloke with platinum blond hair, a goatee and a heart of gold (as long as you didn’t drop in on him). Sometimes his surfing wasn’t pretty, but, boy, he got the job done, seemingly glued to his board as he lip-bashed down the line. Some one unkind, quite possibly me, once called him “Wayne Lynch without the finesse”, but he compensated for his sometimes ungainly moves by their pure shock value. Did you see what he just did? Is that really possible? And even after Smitty began to disappear from the scene, we saw echoes of that radical style in the goofy foot grom he mentored from the start – a kid called Tom Carroll. Like the other (Newcastle) Col Smith, Smitty was a flashy goofy foot who loved a beer and a smoke in the Narra car park. The darts got Newcastle Col in the prime of life, but Narrabeen’s Col is still motoring on at 65, despite a quadruple bypass and a crook back that keeps him out of the surf these days. My spies on the night (TC and Layne) tell me they’ve never seen anyone more stoked at his induction. And then there’s Doris. A confession here: when I saw that I was shortlisted against Tony “Doris” Eltherington for this year’s Peter Troy Lifestyle Award, I took my money off that horse! This, after all, is the salty

old sea dog who has a Bintang and a kretek for breakfast, then goes out and rips and shreds all day, or, as featured on 60 Minutes last year, takes the wheel of a rescue boat and searches the high seas for two days, when no one else would or could, until he finds the surfer who went overboard in the night and everyone had given up for dead. Everyone except Doris, who last week took the well-deserved clean sweep of the Troy Award and Waterman of the Year. Doris and I go back to Burleigh 1975, and the 23-day swell. Everyone else on Team Neilsen was too pooped to party. Not Doris. He’d comb those long blond locks and force us off to the pub for sundowners, then on to Ray Moon’s Captain’s Table for a surf and turf, then on to the Penthouse Club, and so on until the sun came up and it was time to go surfing again. And so it went, wherever we found ourselves – Bells, Hawaii, Bali, Padang – through those glory days of a misspent youth, and middle age for that matter! We dropped him back to the bolt-hole he keeps near Jimbaran in Bali after a goodish lunch last year. There were empty beer bottles lined up on every flat surface, and Doris was about to make some more. We ran a mile. Don’t know how he keeps it up, but he does. And he’s still the best surf skipper in the Indies, and when they’re stacked up like freight trains coming down the point, he might still be the best surfer in the water.

associated with it. The release went on: “Webber Wave Pools has signed a $20 million of Gold Coast residential the Gold Coast hinterland. That i n memorandum of understanding with real estate, and is so well-heeled that formation turned out to be a bit surfer-entrepreneur David Baird for he let a waterfront mansion sit empty dodgy, and the wave park has sunk the construction of the first artificial for more than a year, so let’s hope, for without trace. Greg Webber is a great surfboard wave pool in Australia. Greg Webber Greg’s sake, that it’s him. But I can’t can finally rest. His long-time man- help being reminded of the bold an- shaper and an innovative thinker, made wave concept will finally see nouncement made a while back by and his wave pool models look very the light of day in a fully developed the Kelly Slater Wave Company that good. He deserves to get a Webber commercial project… ‘The location the earth movers were about to start Wave Pool up and running, so fingers work at some development site in crossed this will happen. is somewhere in South-East Queensland, but we can’t say exactly where just yet’, reveals Greg Webber.” There is a David Baird who owns about Mechanical Repair & Service Centre

WHAT THE? Australia’s first artificial wave pool will open in Queensland. That’s what the six-line press release that popped up on my email last Friday said, and since then I haven’t been able to get any details out of anyone

Sun-kissed skin with the right sun care The summer holidays might be over but that doesn’t mean you should be forgetting to use sun protection. In fact, it should be part of your daily routine before you head outdoors. Sharon Cassidy from Riverside Beauty shares some tips on choosing the right sun care and introduces Payot’s new range of sun care products. When choosing a sun protection that is right for you, take into account your phototype, your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and the place and season of your exposure to the sun. Payot has introduced a brilliant new sun range that is an anti-oxidant shield offering protection against UVA rays to help prevent the signs of photo-aging due to the sun. For sensitive, highly exposed areas try the SPF 50+ Anti Aging Protective Stick. With a non-greasy texture it offers maximum sun protection for sensitive area such as the lips, eye contour, nose, ears, scars etcetera. This is suitable for all skin types and great for water sports plus the ultra practical stick slips into a pocket so it’s easy to have with you at all times. For an after sun soothing cooling ef-

fect, try the Payot Soothing After Sun Mist – this milky mist provides an instant feeling of soothing coolness for skin overheated and dehydrated by the sun. Payot has also introduced a self tanning spray for an even, natural-looking and long lasting tan from the first application. Great for all skin types, it is easy to use and gives a natural sun-kissed look. Remember the golden rule is to avoid any sun exposure between noon and 4pm and before sun exposure apply a generous amount of sun protection all over your body, focusing particularly on your thighs, top of your feet, calves, the back of your knees, the nape of your neck and behind your ears. Repeat application frequently, particularly after swimming.

health & wellness Are your hormones Sticky blood? weighing you down? Sticky situation Ever wondered why the person next to you can eat chocolate all day and not put on weight, while you look at a piece of cake and put on a kilo? It’s all down to metabolism.

Put simply, our metabolism runs our body the way an engine runs a car. Different cars use different fuels just like we do. We can either burn fat, carbohydrate or protein (muscle mass) for energy depending on our hormonal balance. Most people are frustrated by their efforts to lose weight because they are eating foods which slow down their metabolism, upsetting the delicate hormone balance of their body. Conditions such as an underactive thyroid, menopause, Syndrome X or insulin resistance - all due to hormonal imbalances - can also contribute to the building up of fat stores in the body and are influenced by the type of foods we eat. This can result in symptoms such as a predominance of midriff fat, low energy, sugar cravings, mood swings, sleeping difficulties, poor concentration and bloating. Naturopath Yolanda Falivene has a special interest in helping people with hormone imbalances lose weight using the Ultralite Professional Weight Management Program. “When the correct food is consumed in correct portions hormonal balance is restored, your metabolism improves and fat is burned. Cravings and hot flushes disappear, and energy lifts. Another benefit is that only fat, not muscle, is lost so that your weight won’t rebound when you finish.” With Ultralite you can succeed in your goals to lose weight and keep it off, she said.

Nutritionist Stacey Foat of Circle Wellness in Peregian said the majority of these people could go on to develop diabetes in the next five to 10 years. “These are blood-curdling facts that make you wonder,” she said. “When your blood retains a higher than healthy amount of glucose (due to an inability to process insulin correctly), the result is thick, sticky, sluggish blood, which manifests as symptoms such as fatigue, general weakness, poor concentration, headaches, blurred vision, abdominal obesity, an inability to burn fat and digestive disturbances. Alzheimer’s disease, another epidemic-like disease state sweeping the nation, is also believed to be associated with consistently elevated blood glucose, also

known as Type 3 Diabetes. “However, there is hope, because all pre-diabetic changes are merely a sign of disease and with the right nutrition, exercise and supplementary support, all signs are reversible.” Live Blood Analysis is one of the most innovate assessment technologies available for screening health conditions. A tiny sample of your blood is viewed under light field microscopy and projected onto a computer screen to provide an accurate representation of the health of your blood and the possible damage sugar is creating in your body. “Insulin resistance is the most common symptom of abnormal blood sugar regulation, however you don’t have to have diabetes for this process to be wreaking havoc inside your cells. Insulin resistance makes it virtually impossible to lose weight,” Stacey said. Stacey is offering a free health seminar - Blood Sugar Regulation & Weight loss – why you won’t lose weight with sticky blood - on Thursday, February 27 at 6.30pm. Places limited, 5471 2201 to book.

Almost one million Australians are currently suffering from diabetes - and that’s only the diagnosed cases. A further two-thirds of the population are thought to be in a pre-diabetic state, and 1 in 20 pregnant women develop gestational diabetes.

Long lunch for Katie Rose

Looking for a healthy alternative for a school lunchbox treat? Patrick Williams from Belmondos shares this delicious recipe, which is packed with wholesome goodness and antioxidants and can be stored in the fridge for up to one-and-a-half months in an airtight container. You can also vary the dried fruits to suit your taste or try macadamia butter instead of almond.

METHOD Place the unchopped dried pears, apricots and cranberries in a heatproof bowl, pour over hot water, cover with cling wrap and allow to steam until fruit softens (about 15 minutes). In another bowl place chopped dried pears, apricots and cranberries, sesame seeds, pepita seeds, oats and chia seeds and mix lightly. Place the softened dried fruit in a food processor with shredded coconut, almond butter, honey and cocoa powder and blend to a thick paste. Add to the chopped fruits, seeds and oats and mix well. Divide mixture into 24 to 26 pieces and, with lightly wet hands, roll mixture into balls. Placing on a greaseproof paper-lined tray and refrigerate for about one hour.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Summer All Over long lunch, in support of the Katie Rose Hospice, Doonan. Held under the famous fig trees of the original Eumundi Markets site, the luncheon is the first major community project of the newly formed Rotary Club of Eumundi and will kick off at 11.30am on Sunday, March 23. This year’s menu has been created by renowned chefs Max Porter and Peter Wolfe and includes a selection of Ocean trout with a steamed prawn bun and blistered beans or Basque chicken with chorizo, potato and salad leaves, plus BYO drinks with glasses provided. For dessert, there is passion fruit tart brûlée with pineapple tutti frutti or a chocolate terrine with red wine raspberry sauce. Guests will be entertained by the smooth sounds of Noosa duo Linda and Lance, plus there will be raffles, an auction of all things cool and quirky as well as lucky door prizes. Tickets are $50 per person with half of each ticket sale going to Katie Rose Hospice to help with their valuable work of providing terminally ill people with nursing and support services. Hospice spokesperson Les Godwin said the long lunch was a crucial fundraising event. Tickets are available now, but be quick because there are only 300 available. It’s all about you… in a good way! BELINDA CAMPBELL So, it’s nearly the end of February and - answer this one honestly - how many of us have actually managed to keep all those New Year’s resolutions that we so passionately made in the heady heat of the festive season? My guess is probably very few and there are lots of different reasons for this. There are so many pressures placed on us in today’s society: to be fit, thin, healthy, socially aware, great friends, perfect parents, environmentally friendly and the list goes on and on. We actually believe that in order for us to be happy, functioning individuals we have to achieve some if not all of these traits. When we make public unrealistic promises and then break them, all that happens is we feel worse – guilty and not good enough and our

level of self esteem declines further. Our biggest mistake is to compare ourselves with the expectations of the masses. When that happens we are setting ourselves up for failure. In order to lead a fulfilling life we need to listen to US - our minds, our bodies, our needs. We must learn to accept and respect ourselves. This is not an easy thing to do and quite often we need help to see the wood from the trees. Talking through your issues, concerns, fears and dreams with an independent counsellor can help to put your life into perspective. When we verbalise the constant voice in our head, it is often much easier to discover what is really stopping us from achieving true contentment. Each person has their own individual life experiences and can benefit by learning skills to prevent negative thought patterns and behaviour.

The world today is an ever evolving, frantic place. Everybody will at some stage in their lives find themselves overwhelmed and unable to cope. With the help and guidance of a counsellor they can develop a range of strategies that will provide a greater understanding of the “triggers” that cause stress and anxiety. Techniques can then be learned that will create a greater sense of wellbeing in mind and body. Belinda Campbell is a Life Counsellor – 0419 530 782

All-new Soul reboots Super Sprints were sizzling – literally! its unique appeal MAX PARNELL

Kia’s second-generation Soul is an all-new model that introduces a smooth new-look exterior inspired by the 2012 Kia Track’ster concept, creating a thoroughly fresh, more grown-up appearance without losing its appealing character and individualistic edge.

Beneath the new panels, there’s an all-new platform (based on Kia’s best-selling Cerato/Forte/cee’d platform) with a significantly stronger bodyshell and upgraded suspension to improve driving dynamics and ride comfort. The original Soul generated immense loyalty among owners and both existing and new buyers for the latest model will appreci-

ate the latest car’s significantly quieter cabin, higher quality materials, increased space for people and cargo, plus the new range of premium features. “While Soul has not been a volume model for Kia in Australia, the car has won a loyal following through its individual styling, practical use of space and all-round ease and satisfaction of ownership,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Tony Barlow, said. “With the arrival of the all-new model, with its improvements and refinements across the board, I believe the Soul will continue to be a benchmark model for new car buyers shopping with their head as well as their heart.”

The 2014 motor racing season began last weekend with some “hot” laps for the 12 members of Noosa Beach Classic Car Club who made their way to Morgan Paul Holter in the V8 Pontiac chases and catches a Park Raceway at Warwick. Monaro in the super sprint final Saturday saw temperatures hitting 36 degrees as drivers aggressively to harass more legendary Falcons hit the accelerator for four sessions on the tricky corners. Len Falknau had the Turbo Bluebird testing the new suspension on the tricky of Test and Tune. Some cars were technical circuit while Wally Conway took it easy overheating and all drivers were feeling breaking in a new 2 litre engine in his RS2000 the heat but what a great way to start the Escort and Bill Williams was working the brakes season with no timing and no trophies, to the limit on his 1600 Escort. just a relaxed introduction to the long Kristy Holter put on a crowd-pleasing display, series of competitive events coming in managing to spin the big V8 Pontiac twice on the 2014. one lap; dad Paul was on fire catching and passing After sorting some problems on the first day, Sunday saw competitive Super Sprints once again in the heat after a brief storm the previous night. My Jaguar 3.4 was in fine form putting in laps two seconds faster than last year, while the other XJS Jaguars of Daryl Shaw and Dave Price soon found their rhythm, despite being new to the circuit. Shane Hill drove the 351 XE Falcon very

much more powerful cars on his way to the fastest sedan time for the Noosa crew. Mark Hulst had the Brabham BT26 running well and put in a time close to the best outright of the day. Most of the Noosa drivers left their cars at Warwick as this coming weekend will be the start of the Qld-NSW Sprints Challenge at the same circuit. All we hope for is cooler weather!

NOOSA TODAY

Team Wood with NBL’s Ben McMullen

Final push for finals MICHAEL SOBEY It was a home game for the Thunder 1st grade against Caloundra. After being sent in to bat we were quickly reduced to 2/10.

9-15 MARCH 2014

Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing is joining forces with Noosa Biosphere and Tom Wegener Surfboards to present an opening weekend tribute to sustainable surfboards. This will incorporate a wooden surfboards workshop and exhibition on the beach from noon on Saturday, March 8, followed by a demonstration of a wide variety of wood boards, old and new.

Wooden boards will be back on Sunday, March 9, when Noosa Biosphere presents an exhibition of “toothpick surfing. If you’ve ever looked at grandpa’s photos from the 1940s, and wondered how the hell they ever turned those 16-footers, Tom Wegener and friends will be demonstrating this lost art of surfing, all part of Noosa Biosphere’s sustainability project. NBL will also be providing a water station and information counter where you can refill your water bottle and pick up plenty of info on both the Biosphere and the Noosa National Surfing Reserve proposal. DISABLED SURFERS OPEN DAYS The Sunshine Coast branch of the Disabled Surfers Association will join forces with Noosa Malibu Club to present an open day at First Point on the first day of the festival, Saturday, March 8, from 11.30am. Last ch DEUS O COURTESY his style. PHOT the thrill the DSA experience gives to people who need a little lift in life, don’t miss this. Better still, if you’re a surfer, register as an assistant at the beach and become a part of the fun. The DSA will also be conducting its last scheduled open day of the summer at Noosa West the previous Saturday, March 1. If you’re a surfer and can help, First Groyne car park 8am. HURRY WHILE STOCKS LAST! As we get to the pointy end of this year’s festival, available entries are filling fast. If you’re one of those people who always leave everything to the last minute, here’s what we have left: Classic Malibu Tag Teams Challenge: just a couple of slots left in this popular event for teams of 4 (any age, sex or affiliation), so get on it. Bank of Queensland Family Challenge: this has been extended to accommodate demand, so a few slots still left here. Deus Womp Comp: Almost full, local body surfers better hurry. Seaglass Finless Project Pro: pocket money on the line here and still a few slots. Come on all

However, the middle order stood up and with Jarrod Offficer and Andrew Knight both scoring 50s and Kent Tomsett scoring 40, and a couple of others getting starts, a respectable 237 was posted. A fine start to the bowling saw Josh Tyson pick up 2 early wickets. This was followed by a great spell from Rowdy Thompson (3/12) and it has the visitors in real trouble at 6/76 and a drought breaking win on the horizon next week. 2nd grade were away at clown town and were also sent in to bat. A disastrous start saw 2 wickets in the first over. It was real trouble at 4/38 before Chris Wright (107) joined Jason Toohey (50) for a sensational 153 run partnership. A few extra runs from the tail saw a total of 223 posted. It was away against top-of-the-table Maroochydore for 3rds. The home side won the toss and quickly elected to bat on a

you friction free sliders. Ocean Addicts Stand Up Paddle Division: still slots open in men’s and women’s surf, plus 5K Paddle with cash prizes! Foam Symmetry Old Mal: a couple of slots left in this much-loved event for pre-1968 surfboards. Amateur age divisions are very close to full, but we still have three slots for the grand kahunas in the Over 70s, plus a few in the men’s 65s and 55s. Remember, if your age division is full, you can “surf down and enter a younger division. In the junior divisions, the reverse applies: if the U15s are full, you can “surf up in the U18s. great looking pitch. Our bowlers, however, provided a fantastic first session with extremely disciplined bowling to have them 6/78 after 40 overs. A poor umpiring decision after the tea break allowed the home side a reprieve and the heat started to take its toll with the next pair putting on a steady partnership. Maroochydore finally declared at 7/225 with Phil Drescher and Reece Langan both picking up 2 wickets. Special mention to young Jesse Russell, picking up his first senior wicket, and Tom Stewart in his senior debut bowling extremely well but without luck. 5th grade were at home to second-placed Buderim in a must-win game to keep them in finals contention. Batting first it was tough going against a strong bowling attack and they were 3/68 at the break. It progressed better after the break and a total of 174 was reached mainly due to the efforts of Morgan Horn (52) with his first senior half century, Gary Madsen (37) and Bronson Horn (20). A big effort is needed in the field next week to secure a finals berth and hopefully a top two spot.

Nippers get busy at Noosa DEAM SMALLMAN

1949-105

Last weekend at Noosa Main Beach saw the second round of the nipper club championships for the season.

Nippers from U8s through to U14s went through myriad beach and water events as the club looks to crown its 2013/14 age group champions and runners-up. Equally important is the awards for the boy and girl nipper in each age group, that best reflects what being a nipper at Noosa means, as well as the award for the most improved nipper for the season for boy and girl. It’s been a busy season for the nippers. The weekend prior our U11sU14s were at their branch carnival at Dicky Beach, which takes place across two days, as nippers attempt to qualify for state championships. This year the championships are being held at beautiful North Kirra and will see 40-plus Noosa nippers head south to take on clubs from all over Queensland, in three days of gruelling sand and beach events. It’s also pretty gruelling for the parents! Our U8 to U10 also took on their branch carnival at Redcliffe, which saw our biggest team for the year for a carnival and boy (and girl) did they do great! Tomorrow afternoon, the friendly rivalry between Noosa Heads and Sunshine Beach will light up Main Beach as our U11s-U14s undertake a

Dan Sinclair, Leo Langbridge, Coach Omar, Jack Frey and Gus Powell mini-carnival. This promises to be a light-hearted yet spirited event, which will further cement the great bond these two clubs share. But it doesn’t stop there. This Saturday the Wave Warriors Carnival Roadshow hits Main Beach as our nippers once again show the Coast why being a nipper is not just loads of fun, but has something to offer everyone. Come on down and witness the future of Australian surf lifesaving.

Noosa, Sunshine racking Lifesaver Jaben them up is flying high It’s that time of the year again, for the championship season is now under way. For the

competitors and coaches of Sunshine Beach SLSC, their performance in the State Champion Patrol Competition and the Champion Lifesaver events, held last weekend, must rank as one of the best ever in these disciplines.

The competition - known as the State Surf Rescue Carnival - was hosted by the Pt Lookout SLSC Stradbroke Island. At the close of day Sunshine walked off the beach with seven medals: six gold and a bronze. In the patrol competition, which is a team event, they won gold in the U15 and U17. The champion lifesaver, which is individual, saw Alice Tillard (girls) and Reagan Greentree (boys) win gold in the U14. For the U17 boys Brock Redwood won gold and Jarrard Greentree bronze. In the U14 board riding Amber Dods also won gold. At the completion of the program it was announced that Sunshine had topped the aggregate score for the carnival, thus making it one of their most successful days at a state titles. Club President Craig Law said, “It is a great result. Our training programs are really paying off, but the

Amber Dods claimed gold in U14 board riding best of all is that these events are our core business - patrolling and lifesaving is what we are all about. It does not get much better. And well done to our coaches and support team.” Sunshine Beach has for some time placed heavy emphases on team events and rightly so, for team spirit, be it in patrolling or competition, is the most important factor of all. Another plus for the Sunshine club is that for the first time in many seasons they will enter a Taplin relay team in the open section of the state titles. This is a team event, consisting of six competitors - two ski paddlers, two swimmers and two board paddlers. This is the event that the majority of coaches rate as the true Blue Ribbon event of both state and national titles. It is definitely the one to win. On Saturday the boat section of the Noosa club travelled to Tallebudgerra on the Gold Coast to take

part in Round 3 of the Australian Surf Rowers League Queensland Cup. Apart from the competition side of things it was to be the first time they competed in the new boat, dubbed the Solahart Laney. The boat, proudly sponsored by Solahart, caused a stir when it won the first race of its career in heat one of the A Grade division. Hope it is a sign of things to come. The As reached the semi-final on the day; the U23s had to row A Grade before being knocked out in heat 3 by their club-mates. The U19s also had to row up a division. The ladies did well to finish in third place in their final and the masters rowed on to win two of three races to give them the day overall in the U200 Division. Only six weeks to the Aussie titles we wish them well. On March 21 at Noosa Springs Golf Course, the Bank of Queensland will proudly sponsor a big fundraising day for Peregian’s Jupiters Summer Surf Girl rntrant, India O’Connor. You can register at the Bank’s Noosa branch, or by phoning Peregian Surf Club on 5448 1728. The highlight will be a chance to win a Suzuki Swift courtesy of Cricks Motors, Wises Road.

TEWANTIN BOWLS CLUB We will be conducting the Aus-

tralian and New Zealand Railways Institute annual bowls carnival at our club from February 16-27. To accommodate this prestigious event some alterations have been made to normal fixtures. Check notice boards. Teams will be competing from Australian States and New Zealand. The men’s section is holding a special general meeting this Sunday, at 9.30am to elect a president following the resignation of Heath Costello. Nominations will be taken from the floor. In Super Challenge the men’s Silver team continued its winning form by defeating Noosa Heads 3-115 to 2-85. The match was decided on an extra end of the fours 20-19. Our Bronze men’s and ladies’ teams played Club Maroochy with the men losing 2-80 to 3-122. We were successful in a pairs and the fours. The ladies won both the triples and fours 2-57 to 0-31. The barefoot bowls program with David Muir is firing with plans to involve eight schools.

COOROY BOWLS CLUB The finals of the B Grade Championships were held on Sunday in very hot and blustery conditions. Both matches were very lengthy and very close, making for exciting finishes. In the men’s final, J McKechnie de-

Jaben certificate and eventually the license that will enable him to drive the Jet Rescue Ski. Last season he attended the leadership and advanced training course at Coolum, known as Camp Commando. “The training was really good and some of the instructors came from the Australian Defense Forces so we were given some new ideas and a lot of information on leadership. It also gave us the chance to make new friends.” Despite still having three years of high school in front of him, Jaben is looking into his father’s background as to a guide to his future. “Dad flew F111 in the RAAF for 10 years, then another 10 years as a commercial pilot. To become a jet pilot would be great, but if not there is aeronautical engineering. Whichever, I am definitely thinking of the RAAF as a career pathway.”

newsflash

Last weekend was a true indication of this young lifesaver’s character. Despite still recovering from knee surgery - the result of an injury he received playing rugby union for Noosa Dolphins - Jaben maintained his place in his club team to contest both the patrol competition and Champion Lifesaver events at the State Championships. The patrol team which he captains won the gold medal and, in the lifesaver event, which is individual, he finished fourth.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB Highlight of the week at Noosa Heads was the finals on Sunday of the men’s A-singles championship. The morning semis saw wins to Ian Sanday over Steve Bowie and Allan Pearson from Ross Ward. The final was a thriller and went right down to the wire. Sanday finally prevailed 25-23 to take his first singles title at Noosa Heads. Pearson, the 2012 winner, had to be content with a second consecutive runner-up position. The match was of a very high standard, much enjoyed by the big crowd. Saturday was a tough one in Super Challenge matches with both Silver and Bronze sides having to play extra ends to decide their contests. Unfortunately we lost those ends as the Silver men went down by 2 rinks to 3 at Tewantin, and the Bronze men lost 2-3 at a searingly hot Kenilworth. A better result for the Bronze ladies who came home with 8 points from their matches. This Saturday Silver play Bribie Island at home and Bronze will also play at home against Nambour Heights. The next of the club championships to be decided is men’s pairs, for which entries are now open.

Brady, a Year 10 student at St Teresa’s, started his career in the lifesaving movement at Pt Lookout in the 2009/10 season as a U9 nipper. After a year’s break, during which his family shifted north, he continued his involvement in the nippers by joining the club at Sunshine Beach in the U11s. Now having moved up to the senior club he is a roster SRC member of Patrol 7, of which his dad Paul is the captain. “It’s good being on patrol with dad, it gives a family feeling, not just for us, but the club as a whole has that feeling right through it. My dad is also chairman of the JAC and and my sister, Talisa, is full-on in U13 nippers. With mum Tania being our official driver to the club and training, it makes it a full-on family involvement.” Apart from his patrol Jaben is also involved in competition, particularly Patrol Competition and Champion Lifesaver. “These events really cover our work as lifesavers and because of this I really enjoy it,” he said. Like a lot of the youth in today’s surf clubs, Jaben sees his patrol work as giving something back to the community and that makes it all worthwhile. One of his ambitions is to become a Patrol Captain. He is also committed to obtaining his advanced first aid

Athletes on track for Championship medals

Noosa Outriggers impress at nationals JO SEARLE Noosa Outriggers brought home the goods after the 2014 National Sprint Titles and World Sprint Qualifiers for Outrigger Canoeing held at Kawana Lakes.

MICHELLE MOORE Graduating U17 athletes from Little Athletics Noosa have their sights set on achieving some of their best performances at this year’s IGA State Championships to be held at Barlow Park in Cairns, March 21-23.
