Power station’s 80 jobs now in doubt By NOEL MURPHY

WORKERS at Alcoa’s Anglesea power plant mine are furious the complex could close if it remains unsold by year’s end, according to their union. Australian Workers Union (AWU) state secretary Ben Davis said Alcoa had assured the 80 staff their jobs were safe, telling them the plant was separate to a review that would close the company’s Point Henry operations, costing 800 jobs. “They’re all totally stumped, they didn’t see it coming at all,” Mr Davis told the Independent. “For 18 months Alcoa said it wasn’t part of the review and then out of left field they’re told it’s sale or closure.
Close it, urge greenies “They’re angry and they’re worried about their future.” The plant also faces closure calls from environmentalists. Doctors for the Environment Australia is spearheading the push over feared health risks from plant emissions. “Compared to coal elsewhere, Anglesea coal has an extremely high sulphur content. When it is burned at Anglesea power station high levels of sulphur dioxide are emitted,” said the group’s Victoria chair, Dr Eugenie Kayak. “Sulphur dioxide is a respiratory ir-
ritant with no safe level of exposure. It can trigger asthma attacks and worsen lung diseases like emphysema.” Dr Kayak claimed the power station also released other harmful air pollution “known to contribute to heart disease, lung disease and lung cancer” and raised concerns about its proximity to a primary school, residential areas and the town centre. Mr Davis said green lobbyists wanted the power plant shut but “a goodly proportion” of Anglesea’s community hoped it continued. The prospects of re-employment for plant workers would be grim if

Alcoa failed to find a buyer, he said. Alcoa spokesperson Nichola Holgate said the coal mine and power station had the “potential to operate as a stand-alone facility after the smelter closes”. “No decision has been made to shut Anglesea if it cannot be sold. What we’ve said is that Alcoa believes the Anglesea power station is a viable asset and that’s why it will be offered for sale,” she said. “If a sale is not possible we’ll evaluate options at that time, including possible closure. In open-crew sessions, we did discuss the various options but no deadlines were set.” $600m body blow, PAGE 5

100 screened for deadly disease
Office’s TB link By NOEL MURPHY
A TUBERCULOSIS outbreak at the Geelong Advertiser might have been linked to its open-plan office, “hot-desking” and closed air-conditioning, according to Medical Journal of Australia. A total of 23 people tested positive for latent TB at the newspaper in 2011 after the potentially deadly disease infected a senior staffer. Department of Health screened 100 people, the journal reported this week. No active cases of TB were identified but 12 people were treated and six were managed

with symptom-monitoring or chest X-ray surveillance. The original victim’s son contracted an active form of the disease but both were successfully treated. “The workplace had an openplan design with low-profile cubicle dividers and closed airconditioning,” the report stated. “The practice of hot-desking (under which staff have no permanent desks) involved about 75 to 80 per cent of the staff in the main office area. “The patient with the index case of TB had a permanent desk.” The report stressed the possi-
ble TB transmission was from an infected patient without initiallyidentified risk factors. Contributing factors included “a significant delay in presentation and diagnosis and a contained working environment”. Australia usually has five or six cases of TB annually for every 100,000 people, the report said. “However, TB continues to pose significant challenges because of migration from countries with a high burden of TB and reactivation of the disease in the older people.” n Noel Murphy worked at the Advertiser at the time of the TB incident.

Mayor unveils new convention centre concept
How unconventional!
By NOEL MURPHY
A MASSIVE iceberg-style, Superman’s-polar-retreat convention centre on Corio Bay has formed the basis of a special Geelong pitch to Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Mayor Darryn Lyons and ARM architects drafted the stunning image of a Frank Gehry-like architectural icon to suggest what could be possible on Geelong’s weaterfront. The design presents an alternative vision for a proposed Geelong convention centre, previously earmarked for a site near Limeburner’s Point. The mayor’s concept would sit at the end of a rebuilt Yarra Street Pier to berth cruise ships and includes a new hotel on the adjacent foreshore. “It’s an unbelievable image,” Cr Lyons said.
PRESENTED: A concept image of the convention centre on a new Yarra Street Pier. “I’ve been sitting with architects ARM and came up with a massive iceberg-style Superman design with them and they’ve been tremendous.” Cr Lyons met Mr Abbott and Industry Minister senator Ian Macfar-
lane on Wednesday to discuss the city’s future in the wake of savage manufacturing cuts at Ford and Alcoa and uncertainty about Shell following its reported sale. “There was real energy in the room
and both Prime Minister Abbott and Mr Macfarlane were clearly enthused about the projects we discussed, including the Yarra Street Pier and Geelong’s bid to win the contract to build the Land 400 military vehicle,” Cr Lyons said. “Time will tell whether we’ll achieve our aims from today but I’m absolutely confident we made a very compelling case and the Prime Minister and the Minister for Industry were both fully engaged and understanding of the businesses cases we presented today. “Today’s meeting was evidence that the work we have done in the last few months to build a case for Geelong has put us in a strong position. We made a very persuasive case for Geelong backed up with solid research on jobs growth and economic benefit.”

In brief Bikies bust GEELONG bikies were arrested during raids on outlaw motorcycle clubs this week, police have revealed. A Victoria Police spokesperson said Geelong was involved in the state-wide raids on a number of bikie premises.
Georgia ‘alliance’ GEELONG’S council is “formalising a strategic alliance” with a US county to foster job opportunities in bio-science, according to councillor Bruce Harwood. Cr Harwood said he visited Athens, Georgia, in November to “explore the commercial opportunities”, leading to the signing of a memorandum of understanding this week.
Jaw broken POLICE have released an image of two men, pictured, they want to interview over an assault on a supermarket assistant at Waurn Ponds. Police said the assistant suffered a broken jaw after one of the men threw a punch during the November attack.
Shops approved A NEW 12-shop retail development beside Corio’s Aldi supermarket has won planning approval. A report on the planning application said the 3200sqm development in Fairbairn Dve would include a “major” tenant with 11 smaller shops, 94 car parks and a link to Broderick Rd.
Boom sites A $47 MILLION program to upgrade level crossings has installed boom gates at three local sites, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos has announced. He said the upgrades at Moriac, Mt Duneed and Pettavel would enhance safety as part of the statewide program.

Traders propose major surgery for Torquay’s heart A NEW BLUEPRINT for Torquay proposes to revamp its commercial heart, triple its car parking and build 300 multi-level units facing Taylor Park. Torquay - A Town for Tomorrow Action Agenda also wants 30 new “eclectic and boutique” businesses in the central business area within five years. Torquay Commerce and Tourism (TCT) president Barrie Sutherland said the action agenda aimed to build on Torquay’s surfing culture and
relaxed, casual character. The group wanted to plot Torquay’s destiny rather leave it to outside influences, Mr Sutherland said. The action agenda calls for the Gilbert St commercial centre to be redeveloped within three years, Taylor Park to be “vitalised” within five and for improved connections between the foreshore’s Elephant Walk and the retail area. TCT has asked Surf Coast Shire to form a “central business joint working group” to ensure the area was “sustainable, vibrant and meet(s) future needs”.
The group also wanted State Government funding for research, expert advice, community consultation and infrastructure and streetscape plans. An action agenda report said Torquay’s central business area was in “desperate need” of review “from a policy and business prosperity perspective”. “Initiatives must be developed that create a climate for investment and facilitate the development of a unique set of businesses where residents and visitors will want to return.” Mr Sutherland said the action agenda was geared to preserve and
build on the character of Torquay. “It’s about playing to your strengths,” he said. “In the same way Geelong’s CBD can’t compete with Melbourne, retail shopping at Torquay can’t compete with Waurn Ponds or Geelong. We should forget about competing when we already have things like the best discounts, the plaza and lifestyle. “For example, when the surf’s up at Bells a lot of people at Rip Curl and other businesses will be there at lunch. If the tide’s right and the swell’s right, I’m off - it’s about building lifestyle into the workplace.”

Spectre of Newcastle, Latrobe haunts Geelong
Alcoa to cost us $600m By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE CLOSURE of Alcoa has dumped Geelong into the same economic basket as Newcastle when BHP pulled its steel pin and the Latrobe Valley following electricity privatisation, according to union and Labor figures. Australian Workers Union Victorian branch secretary Ben Davis and federal MP for Corio Richard Marles said the Alcoa announcement exacerbated job losses at Ford, Qantas at Avalon, Boral and Target and uncertainty over Shell. “The cumulative effect of this series of hammer blows is much the same as the effect of BHP leaving Newcastle and the privatisation of the SEC in the Latrobe Valley,” Mr Davis said. Alcoa announced its Pt Henry smelter would close in August and the adjacent rolling mill by the end of the year, costing 800 jobs. Mayor Darryn Lyons believed the flow-on effect will cost 2000 to 3000 jobs across the region. Cr Lyons forecast an economic impact on the region of around $600 million annually. Alcoa said the closures would cost up to $270 million, including a $160 million bill this year. The privatisation of the state’s electricity system in the 1990s delivered a bombshell to the Latrobe Valley, leading to mass layoffs.
SHOCKED: Mayor Darryn Lyons embraces an Alcoa worker Brett Noonan at this week’s closure announcement. Picture: JOHN VAN KLAVEREN Power industry jobs fell from 11,000 in 1989 to 2500 and the municipality’s population dropped from 75,000 to 70,000 by 2005. Newcastle’s BHP steelworks closed in 1999, affecting a local industry that once employed 13,000.
But Prime Minister Tony Abbott said after a meeting with Victorian Premier Denis Napthine on Wednesday that “some quite exciting developments” were in store for Geelong. “Early in March we’ll have some announcements to make and then in

the build-up to the budget there’ll be further announcements to make. “There are some quite exciting developments that people are thinking about in Geelong which we can include as part of our announcements in coming weeks.” Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson called on Federal Government to extend its $100 million regional growth fund and to create a specific package for Geelong. Deakin University vice-chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said Geelong had an opportunity to “reinvent” itself for “the jobs of the future.” “Deakin University is already playing a part in helping the region adjust to the economic changes ahead and we stand ready to do more.” she said. Prof den Hollander said universities had played a critical role in helping local economies restructure in both Wollongong and Newcastle. “Today, one of the great new opportunities for Geelong manufacturing is in carbon fibre, the aluminium of the 21st century.” Prof den Hollander said investments of $157 million in a carbon fibre research facility and engineering training centre at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus would leverage research and development capability to directly benefit local businesses and the Geelong economy.

Resilience we have but it’s options we really need IN BETWEEN all the voices fronting the clustered microphones and cameras peddling their politically correct responses was a flash of reality from Mayor Darryn Lyons. “Politicians have gone on for a long time, ‘You’re a resilient bunch down there’. Well, I’m getting a bit fed up with resilience,” he blurted. It highlighted the continuing gulf between our elected representa-
tives and leaders and the rest of we 180,000-or-so workers and our families. The cumulative effect of the series of job losses suffered throughout the region can perhaps be more truthfully measured in confidence than dollars. We know there will be a direct “economic impact” on the 800 Alcoa employees losing jobs later this year, with a flow on for another who knows how many who do business with the aluminium behemoth.
But there’s a different flow on for all of us: we now know for certain that no job is safe. If giants like Alcoa, Ford and Shell can become victims to the changing times and all disappear within a year of each other, what hope is there for businesses with fewer resources? Everyone knew the day was coming but hope still lived to the last, even among the Point Henry workers who crunched the daily production numbers.
Those hopes have now been dashed. Reality, rather than resilience, is the order of the day. As workers, we know there is no point to the blame game or playing politics with people’s livelihoods. What we need are options; options for those to be shortly in the job market but options also for others who have already been on the employment hunt for months, even years. Resilience pays no mortgages and puts no food on the table.

SOMETHING’S COOKING: Danielle Najda and Josh Geard on My Kitchen Rules.
DANIELLE Najda’s tiramisu has a definite earthy camouflage aspect. Just ask My Kitchen Rules. The Seven Network’s runaway culinary prime-time hit had the former Sacred Heart College student and partner Josh Geard serving up their tiramisu in a clay pot complete with chocolate “soil”, mint and basil. It looked like it was pulled from the garden, not the kitchen. Danielle, who hails from North Geelong, was a gatecrasher on the program this week when she and Josh whipped up some offbeat surprise dishes. “Our style is mostly experimental cooking - putting together weird and wacky flavours,” Danielle told the Independent. “Cooking’s predominantly Josh’s passion - his main idol is Heston Blumenthal. We’ve watched a lot of his shows and read a lot of his cookbooks - it’s nice to surprise people at the dinner table.” Danielle’s worked on her cooking skills since childhood with the help of mum Mercedes. As gatecrashers on MKR Danielle and Josh were thrown straight in the deep end. “I don’t think you should apply for a show like this if you’re not good with surprises on the spot and with pressure,” she said. Danielle, who lives in Richmond but returns to Geelong fortnightly, said she and Josh worked in pharmaceutical sales but dreamed of an enterprise in the culinary field. “That’s definitely a passion we share.”
Wind blamed for event rubbish
1113586-EP2-14
HIGH winds caused last week’s Eastern Park rubbish problems in the wake of a triathlon event, according to organisers. Ironman spokesperson Lisa Pringle said the event had never encountered such adverse wind, which blew competitors’ empty cups “in all directions”. “We’ve never had this problem before,” she told the Independent. Ironman competitors left Geelong’s waterfront like
a rubbish dump, with hundreds of plastic cups scattered across Eastern Park, Limeburner’s Point, East Geelong Golf Club and the site of CSIRO’s Animal Health Laboratories. East Geelong residents complained the competitors’ throwaway drink cups blew into stormwater drains, culverts, across a former gun club site and scattered along the foreshore and into Corio Bay. Ironman chief marketing officer Jeff Gillies said the event

Our land price inside top five THE Barwon region has the fifth most expensive land in Australia, according to Housing Industry Association (HIA) and RP Data figures. The Residential Land Report listed local median land prices at $185,000, equal with New South Wales’ Hunter region and Mackay in Queensland. Most expensive was Kimberley in Western Australia at $260,000 and the cheapest was Southern Tasmania at $70,000. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett said residential land faced supply restrictions, causing a bottleneck and upwards price pressure. The report pointed to pressure on residential land supply despite a recovery in new home construction, Mr Garrett said. “We have long emphasised the importance of ensuring that
an adequate supply of affordable, shovel-ready land will be crucial to any sustained recovery in new home building. “That task is imperative now more than ever. All levels of government need to implement the necessary reforms to address the problems affecting the residential land market. “Reducing the excessive taxes and charges on housing as well as reducing planning and land release delays are key areas that need attention.” Mr Garrett said land sales were an indicator of detached house building down the line. Urban Development Institute of Australia Victorian executive director Tony De Domenico said lack of supply certainly affected the region’s coastal areas, such as Torquay. “Geelong is a different story with Armstrong Creek, Leopold and Lara, so there’s by no
means a lack of supply. “People are still buying but the cost of delivering land to the market, with all the taxes, charges and levies, is suffering upward pressure,” Mr De Domenico said. “It also depends on what you are getting with your block. We’ve got sustainable environmental developments and public open space requirements, which other areas might not have.” The Independent revealed last month that an international land affordability survey rated Geelong property as less affordable than New York. The 10th annual Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey ranked Geelong at 7.3 based on its median housing price of $405,000 and median household income of $55,700. The survey said Geelong was among the world’s least-affordable housing markets because of “restrictive land use policies”.

‘Bionic’ car a solution to job woe By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN IMMIGRANT Portuguese architect and urban planner believes Geelong’s car industry can be saved with radical innovation, including a “bionic” car. Lara’s Telmo Lima has written to Mayor Darryn Lyons with an outline of how to phoenix a car industry out of the Ford, Holden and Toyota ashes. With a litany of ideas and concepts spilling out, Mr Lima enthuses about the potential for Geelong to take hold of its own manufacturing destiny. He sees the future in electric or hydrogen-powered cars using bionic power, utilising a vehicle’s own motion to regenerate,
amplify and redistribute electrical energy. “I can see there is a spirit for cars in Geelong and it should use its experience and skills to create a new independent, community-based business. “It would not take much for many people to buy small shares in a community company to generate investment for local people. “Geelong should take the lead and do it ourselves. We need a ‘yes-we-can’ attitude,” Mr Lima said, “There is an opportunity to create a new interaction between universities and companies in the process of achieving new technologies in robotics, alter-
native energies, carbon components and more.” Mr Lima is in Australia on a student visa and completing a business course but holds degrees from Lusofona University in Lisbon. He designed a Utopic City as part of his thesis for his Masters in Architecture, focusing on self-sustainability. Mr Lima, who witnessed the decline of the Portuguese economy over the past decade, said similar warning signs were apparent here. Geelong must dismiss its doom and gloom thinking and be motivated to action, he advised. “Innovation arises out of crisis.”

Charges over assault on woman By NOEL MURPHY NORTH Geelong’s Jason Trickey will face assault and damage charges in Geelong Magistrates’ Court. The 41-year-old self-styled social media guru is expected to plead not guilty to charges of recklessly causing injury to a female and criminal damage at a 16 April hearing. Mr Trickey himself was recently stabbed and bashed at his home. Geelong Police Constable Adam Foran said the
charges related to the assault of a female. The matter was adjourned after mentions in court mid-January and again on Tuesday this week. Mr Trickey last month posted on Facebook photographs of him wearing a neckbrace in his hospital bed. Police are investigating a Geelong man’s Facebook postings of related threats against Mr Trickey and bragging about assaults against him. Mr Trickey last year posted Facebook images of facial bruises sustained in an undisclosed incident.

Site set to ease grave pressure By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG’S newest cemetery site will cover the region’s burial needs for up to 200 years, according to Geelong Cemeteries Trust chief Darryl Thomas. The trust has bought a 39.7-hectare site on Bellarine Hwy, Marcus Hill, for future use as a cemetery and crematorium. The Independent had previously revealed that Geelong Cemeteries Trust was hunting for new land on the peninsula as population growth strained the capacity of existing cemeteries. “We only have about 15 to 20 years left of the Eastern Cemetery and the trust recognised some

A council report said the commercial plantation would provide excellent screening from surrounding farming properties. The report said the major issue likely to arise related to traffic and whether VicRoads would require any highway upgrades.
time ago that we needed a new site,” Mr Thomas said. “We set about finding some land and this parcel came up. It’s well suited as a site for a cemetery.” Mr Thomas said the purchase took into account projected population growth for the region, with the site to be developed over time in sections. “It will be staged because public needs and wants change over time and we don’t want to tie future management into what may be popular today. “The first stage will be engaging a landscape architect to develop a detailed schematic plan of the site. “The new site will offer simi-

Unfortunate son I FULLY concur with John McArdle’s concerns about the notorious revenue-raising red light camera on Melbourne Rd, Norlane (Letters, 14 February). Our son has held a driving licence for 12 years. Recently he was charged with entering this intersection .8 seconds after the right-turn arrow had elapsed. Before then he had never been charged with a speeding offence or failing a blood alcohol/drug test. His driving record was exemplary. He wrote to VicRoads asking for a review of the $361 fine and three demerit points, explaining the confusing road indications at the intersection and his unblemished driving record. VicRoads refused to amend the fine. If VicRoads is not prepared to exercise its discretion to amend fines under these circumstances, it never will. The public can rightly become cynical that red light cameras, especially the one in Norlane, are primarily designed to raise revenue for State Government. Stan Pokorny Belmont
In too deep I NOTED the Independent’s 31 January story headlined ‘Water Board in new cuts order’. Water and Agriculture Minister Peter Walsh’s proposals were a window-dressing exercise to cover up his poor policy and administration over the past three years. Mr Walsh should never have been appointed Water and Agriculture Minister because of his previous association with northern Victorian farming interests. There was always going to be a conflict between his agricultural interests and those of water users. This is highlighted by his ongoing opposition to using the north-south pipeline to Melbourne even though consumers and taxpayers paid over $2.5 billion to upgrade the Goulburn irrigation system. His position on the desalination plant also highlights his political conflict. He
Avalon’s jobs link
LAND GRAB: Plans for a sound shell in Ocean Grove Park have angered sections of the community.
A matter of Trust I AM opposed to the building of any structure within Ocean Grove Park (Independent, 14 February) without the full endorsement of the people of Ocean Grove after they have been thoroughly informed about why the park exists and have been thoroughly consulted. This land was meant to have been protected under a Trust for Nature arrangement, which, to me, means it is meant to be conserved because of its important environmental assets. Do we now feel that it’s okay to build on the beach where hooded plovers nest? They are rare, just like the rare trees that we need an entire park to protect. Judith Baldacchino St Leonards drove a pricing charge for consumers to cover the plant’s additional operating costs in a one-year increase as opposed to spreading it over the next five years of the existing water plan. The level of water charges are set by an independent commission, which works from policies set by State Government. Given the current determination is only half way through its cycle, it was obviously a political decision to review costs. Mr Walsh is a conflicted minister and his decisions have resulted in additional water costs for customers.
HOW CAN we offset the loss of jobs and economic downturn in the Geelong region? Federal infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Warren Truss has before him Melbourne Airport’s master plan, proposing a new runway directing flights over highly-populated areas including schools, kindergartens and an aged-care facility. But the creation of jobs and economic growth could be shared between Melbourne and Avalon airports. Melbourne wants to continue operating without curfews and has capacity to enhance its existing runways to cater for 265,000 aircraft movements a year, handling 45 million passengers. Melbourne does not have runway capacity to accommodate beyond 265,000 aircraft movement a year. I cannot recall reading in previous Melbourne Airport master plans a request for a rail link but the airport now argues it should get preferential treatment over Avalon and that the Victorian Government should build the link ahead of Avalon’s as a matter of priority. I suggest this is an abuse of market power. The communities surrounding Melbourne Airport do not want the third runway. Geelong, our gateway to the Great Ocean Road, is suffering economic downturn due to the loss of manufacturing businesses and lost jobs. We have an underutilised international airport at Avalon, 55km from Melbourne, which can generate thousands of full-time jobs. A rail link has already been committed for Avalon Airport. Mr Truss and Premier Denis Napthine must reject Melbourne’s third-runway proposal and provide infrastructure support for Avalon to spread the economic benefits of tourism and jobs. Hire a nanny GEELONG Nannies emerged in 2011 when Melanie Holland and Juliet Martin found a growing demand for in-home child care in Geelong and suburbs. Their nanny agency provides exceptional personalised service, guiding clients through the selection and placement process and ensuring the right person to best meet each family’s needs. Juliet says meeting clients in their home is the best way to develop a trusting, professional relationship. Both Mel and Juliet believe that taking the anxiety out of arranging flexible child care is incredibly rewarding. They pride themselves on helping relieve families in a stressful situation.
Geelong Nannies provides help for any time a nanny is needed, day or night, weekends, and even overnight. Regular, casual and one-off bookings are available at reasonable rates. All the service’s nannies and housekeepers are fully covered under Geelong Nannies’ insurance policy. Juliet sends a nanny’s profile to the client when bookings are made, detailing their qualifications, child care history and references. When arranging a regular nanny, Geelong Nannies gives the client two or three profiles prior to arranging interviews with the candidates. Geelong Nannies can conve-
niently accept booking requests by phone, email or text message. A replacement service is available in the event a particular nanny is unavailable, so clients can still go to work or attend an important appointment. Julie and Mel says having a trusted nanny at home where children feel comfortable and secure is a comfort to any parent. “There’s nothing better for a tired mum or dad than coming home at the end of a long day to a tidy, organised home where the children are happy and entertained, and dinner is almost ready.” More information is available by visiting geelongnannies.com. au or phoning 0439 971 487.

Day of culture
Get ready for the colour and spectacle of Pako Festa this Saturday. The organisers say all that’s required of patrons to have a great day out is a happy heart and an open mind. Saturday’s festa begins 11am with the street parade before the
big range of activities and entertainments take over Pakington St until 6pm. Pako Festa is an alcohol-free zone, encouraging families to join in the fun. Geelong multicultural services agency Diversitat runs Pako Festa with the support of City of Greater Geelong, State Government and other sponsors. The Independent, Geelong’s highest-circulating community newspaper, is a long-time supporter of the event. Managing editor Tony Galpin urges readers to attend so they can immerse themselves in Geelong’s diverse culture. “Pako Festa is the city’s biggest one-day event, so make sure you find the time to join in the fun.” More information about the event is available at pakofesta. com.au.
A message from the Premier I AM delighted to offer my warmest wishes to all those attending and participating in Pako Festa 2014, and offer my sincere congratulations to Diversitat, the organiser of this wonderful event. Since 1983 Pako Festa has grown to become one of Australia’s largest celebrations of cultural diversity and one of Victoria’s most vibrant festivals. The 2014 Festa’s theme, Weaving of Cultures, is a fitting phrase that encapsulates Victoria’s multicultural success story. With the participation of di-
verse groups from over 30 cultural and linguistic backgrounds, performers, schools, businesses and artists, the festa captures Geelong’s spirit of community. Geelong is a city with a diverse and growing population and as such there is no better place to hold the festa than in Pakington St. The event provides an opportunity to showcase local artists, community groups and the work of small businesses, who play a significant role in shaping the rich cultural tapestry of the local area
and our state. The Victorian Government is proud to support the Pako Festa and the invaluable work of Diversitat, which supports our community through its range of important programs and services. I congratulate the organisers and all those involved in making this event such a success each year. I wish everyone a fantastic celebration at the Pako Festa 2014. PAKO Festa is the largest free celebration of cultural diversity in Australia. Every year since 1983 the event has attracted scores of patrons from around the region, state and country to Geelong West’s cosmopolitan Pakington St. Geelong’s cultural communities feature at Pako Festa, alongside professional performers, community groups, schools, businesses, street traders and artists from all walks of life. Attendance has grown to around 100,000 in recent years for a smorgasbord of cultural food, folk dancing, the famous Pako Parade, workshops, art exhibitions, films, craft displays and free activities for children in a big day of non-stop entertainment. Pako Festa is a free event, accessible to everyone who wants to share the experience of multiculturalism.

A GEELONG West salon with a difference has been wowing its clients in its first year, offering a fun yet professional environment. Salon Eve is the creation of Barbara Ferrante who aims to provide precision hairdressing with an enchanting twist. Embracing creativity, the salon has a host of bold and random pieces of artwork, inspiring both clients and hairdressers to find the right individual and unique style. “Salon Eve is something a little different to the traditional salon,” Barbara agrees. “It’s a reflection of the way we work and the approach we take to styling hair.” Renowned for its colour work, the salon’s Barbara and senior hairdresser Madi Pender are Redken colour specialists, the only ones in Geelong. The salon’s Vicky Polyzos is a Loreal colour specialist. Madi is also the salon’s leading bridal hair stylist, with Salon Eve becoming renowned for bridal designs. The success of the first-year for Salon Eve is based on the high standards Barbara has developed during seven years in hairdressing. “Salon Eve is all about clients feeling confident, guided by our stylists to give you an understanding and appreciation to the true characteristics of your hair.” Barbara’s team of dedicated, qualified hairdressers includes school-based apprentice Jessica Combridge. Salon Eve is at 1/127 Shannon Ave, phone 5298 1547, email info@saloneve.com.au or visit Facebook at SalonEve1.

80s ENOUGH: Ally Fowler, top right, and the rest of The Chantoozies will feature at next month’s Motor City Music Festival. When Fowler returned to Melbourne from Sydney, Goldsmith suggested she join them
that’s not necessarily an ongoing thing.” The Chantoozies were also planning to record an original song and accompanying video clip to release online via their website and iTunes, Fowler said. “We’re not really interested in doing a whole album but hopefully our live audience will grow. “We have an enormous amount of fun on stage and we want to put on an entertaining show with tunes that bring back memories for people that they like dancing to.” The Chantoozies will join an array of local and visiting artists at Geelong’s inaugural Motor City Music Festival, from 7 to 9 March. TAXIRIDE favourites and new solo works will drive Jason Singh’s recently-announced performance at Motor City Music Festival’s Sunday family day. The former front-man of the legendary Melbourne band will soon release his second single, Speakers, from solo album Humannequin. Motor City Music Festival director Hugo T Armstrong said Singh would showcase his new works alongside Taxiride favourites at the event. “I’m pumped that Jason has agreed to join us on the Sunday of the Festival,” Armstrong said. As a Taxiride founding member, singer and songwriter, Singh achieved nationwide success with two platinum selling albums, six top-40 singles and three top-10 chart hits - Get Set, Everywhere You Go and Creepin’ Up Slowly. At home, Creepin’ Up Slowly became radio and television’s most broadcast song. Overseas, Taxiride received radio airplay and successfully toured North America, Europe and Asia. Motor City Music Festival will take over Geelong Showgrounds over three days between 7 and 9 March. Armstrong said families were invited to bring picnic rugs and deck chairs to enjoy the excellent line-up on Sunday while relaxing on the lawns of the showground’s southwest corner. More information about all three days of the festival is available at motorcitymusicfestival. com.au.

EIGHTIES pop divas The Chantoozies are back to entertain audiences old and new, with touring and recording plans in the pipeline. Female vocalists Eve von Bibra, Angie La Bozzetta, Tottie Goldsmith and Ally Fowler have remained close friends since the group’s peak in the mid-80s to early ’90s. “It’s a bit like just putting on a very comfortable old pair of slippers. Well, sequin slippers,” Fowler told the Independent with a laugh. She denied the group’s renewed activities were the result of “a big conscious decision to reform”. “Eve and Tottie were doing a few corporate gigs around town while Angie and I were both living in Sydney,” she said.
to perform some Chantoozies songs. “As long as there were three of us that was fine, that’s within The Chantoozies brief,” Fowler explained. The women then teamed up with their original publicists to book some gigs and are now performing together again at least once a week, singing old favourite and new covers. The Chantoozies released two albums, in 1987 and 1991, featuring hits such as Witch Queen, Wanna Be Up and Kiss’n’Tell. Fowler revealed that audiences could expect to hear covers including Rev it Up, Take a Little Piece of My Heart, Under the Milky Way and Why Did You Do It, Fowler revealed. “We prefer to stay away from the really modern stuff. We see this whole ’80s thing as a window of opportunity

FinallyFriday 100 not-out as Brennan prepares for launch in city RACH Brennan last year reached her goal to play 100 gigs, so this year she’s upping the stakes to 125. Venues as diverse as cafes and bars as well as major events including Port Fairy Folk and Apollo Bay Music festivals are all on the list for the ambitious local and partner Andrew Silaev, who also accompanies her on guitar.
“It gives you a bit of motivation,” the young singer-songwriter explained “If you know you’re doing 125 gigs you have to do a certain amount each month or you won’t make it. Everyone loves achieving a goal.” Brennan said she would play songs from debut EP Chasing the Sun at its launch at The Barwon Club launch this Saturday. Fellow Geelong up-and-comers
Olly Friend, Kyle Taylor and The Famous Will Band will support her on the night. Brennan said she and Silaev spent two years writing Chasing the Sun’s songs. “We’ve had the songs for a little while and finally got around to recording it. It was basically a fantastic experience,” she gushed. The title track was about Brennan
and Silaev’s relationship. “Not that we go around being all lovey-dovey,” she revealed with a laugh. “He had the idea for the line, ’chasing the sun’ and the music, then I wrote the lyrics - I think I wrote all the verses in about three minutes.” Breannan plans to to tour Adelaide and the UK later this year.

IT’S one of Geelong’s best venues – a first-rate, fully-equipped entertainment and dining centre. But manager Tom Sare says the Croatian Club is not the members-only facility some people seem to think. It’s family-friendly and open to everyone, Tom says. “We have beautiful traditional Croatian cuisine and everything else you’d get elsewhere - we specialise in Croatian and European cuisine.” The Croatian Club is a relaxing, friendly venue with a great atmosphere. A wide range of delicious bistro meals are available
for lunch during the week and specialty seafood fare on Friday nights. The venue can handle functions for up to 350 guests. Whether it’s a small lunch with friends or a large traditional wedding, the club happily assists in creating a memorable event. A range of set menus is available and individual needs can also be satisfied with the freshest, best-quality ingredients in all meals. Tom says non-members are welcome at the Croatian Club and make up a large portion of the club’s clientele.
“The bistro has a delicious choice of meals and refreshments. Punters can relax in the venue’s gaming lounge where the latest machines, free tea and coffee-making facilities and fast, friendly, attentive service are the order of the day. The club also hosts numerous sports-themed nights for the World and Euro cups, AFL rounds and the finals and other significant events. Australian Croatian Association is in Separation St, Bell Park, phone 5278 2596, email functions@ahdgeelong.com.au or visit ahdgeelong.com.au.

Fiat car for style lovers By EWAN KENNEDY ITALIAN style makes the Fiat Panda stand out from the many conservative vehicles that are competing in the small car market in Australia. The Panda could be described as a Fiat 500 ‘Cinquecento’ with a different body and the added convenience of back doors. Unlike the 500 which is unashamedly retro, the Panda is ultra modern in its funky shape. Though the Fiat Panda has been on sales in Europe since 1980, with more than 6 million sold to date, this Italian didn’t migrate downunder until mid2013. The current generation Panda was introduced in Italy late in 2011 so will be current for another four to five years. Panda’s stylists came up with a fascinating theme based around what they call a Squircle, that is squares rounded off by circular corners. The Fiat squircle is used on the exterior of the Panda to give what could have been a boxy vehicle a cute look. But it’s the numerous areas inside – the instrument surrounds, steering wheel centre, door handles, speaker housing, drink holders, and more - try to count them for yourself – that really takes the design out of the ordinary. The Panda comes in Fiat’s usual model range – base Pop, midrange Easy and topline Lounge. Fiat Australia is asking only $16,500, driveaway for the Pop with a manual gearbox. None of the others are driveaway so their prices increase markedly. Then there’s an additional version called the Panda Trekking. It has the appearance of a small SUV – big roof racks, bold door cladding, and raised ride height.
It’s driven only through the front wheels but grip is improved by a sophisticated traction control system. It’s no off-road bush-basher but will take its owners to interesting places on family weekend exploration trips. The 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is an old design and achieves only 51 kW and 102 Nm. It’s installed only in the Panda Pop. A turbo-petrol 875 cc twin-cylinder unit with 63 kW of power, and 145 Nm of torque at just 1900 revs is used in the Panda Easy and Lounge. A 1.3-litre turbo-diesel, gives only 55 kilowatts, but its torque is a strong 190 Nm that arrives at only 1500 rpm. It is standard in the Trekking but not offered in the others. The 1.2 petrol and the diesel come only with a five-speed manual gearbox. The 875 cc turbo-petrol comes with the same manual, but the gearbox can also be specified with the selfshifting five-speed Dualogic in the Panda Easy. The Dualogic is standard in the Trekking. Even the cheapest model Panda Pop gets the sophisticated Blue&Me system developed by Microsoft and Fiat that uses voice activation and synchronises with various music devices and smartphones.Tom-Tom navigation is an option and slips into a builtin slot on the dash. Interior space is excellent for a car of this diminutive size and four adults can travel with only minimal need to shift the front seats forward to make room for tall people in the back. Handling is safe and secure, with these little cars able to hold onto the road at speeds much higher than would be expected for what is, after all, a small family car.

New premises, same service for Aus Dent’s customers in South Geelong GEELONG’S unique paintless dent repair service, Aus Dent, has moved to bigger and brighter premises. But customers won’t have far to go because the award-winning service is still in South Geelong, offering a cost-effective way of repairing vehicle dents and dings that have not cracked or chipped paintwork. Aus Dent has serviced the Geelong area for more than 10 years, getting the job done right the first time with no sanding, filling or expensive paintwork. Paintless dent removal leaves vehicles with the original finish, so there’s no mismatched paintwork or repair marks. Aus Dent’s quality trained technicians are masters of the system of “massaging out the affected area to immediately improve your car’s resale value. Aus Dent Geelong offers free quotes and a quality guarantee. Aus Dent is at factory 2/14 Birkett Plc, South Geelong, phone 5223 1128 or 0414 638 749 or visit ausdent.com.au.

WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong are for 11 years.

IndySport Cranka yankers catch bream on debut
Top four set for Geelong
On the
bite Brian Long
THE widely anticipated Cranka Crabs lures had their first outings in the region over the past week with some impressive results. Michael Evans was the first local that I know of to try the lure, landing three quality bream. I also fished the crab-like lures last weekend, taking three bream around 36cm. The lures we designed for bream fishing but their realistic design should work on a wide variety of fish. Big seas limited surf angling opportunities last weekend, although fishable rocks around the Lorne area produced salmon on lure. Jump Rock, just before Lorne, was good for quality mullet on calm days, with sandworm the standout bait. Offshore anglers found stripy tuna, kingfish and even small bluefin close to Barwon Heads and The Rip when conditions allowed. Small lures such as Micro Uzis, white Slug Go’s and white Asari Mahi baitfish designs were effective. Salmon were plentiful in and around The Rip. Trolling small white occy skirts worked but casting soft plastics into the surface action was better. Grant Stirling laid a liberal berley trail near the entrance to Swan Bay where he soon had garfish on the bite. He caught around a dozen until they shut down with the appearance of a massive shoal of salmon, of which he enjoyably caught 10. Whiting were fickle, with bag-limit captures uncommon. Six to 10 fish per boat was a good result.
CRANKA YANKER: A local bream taken on a Cranka Crab lure. The Coles Channel area produced reasonable catches of gummy sharks to 15kg. Fresh squid or salmon fillets were the favoured baits and the early hours of the morning the best time to fish. Luke Perry and Josephine Clarke drifted the outer-harbour spoil grounds where they had a ball catching and releasing snapper just over or under legal size. They also managed a few quality snapper along with pike to 1m and a handful of average-sized flathead on Gulp Turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Green colour. Flathead were caught on the shallow grass beds right along the Bellarine Peninsula. Water around 2m deep was generally best for the big fish. Guy and Andy Stevens fished Stingaree Bay where they consistently hooked up small snapper on bluebait. However, by day’s end they returned with four fish over 50cm, with the best action on sunset. Perry Cartwright had no trouble
landing four nice pike while spinning from the rocks at North Geelong on Monday evening. He caught all of them and a 2.2kg salmon on a chrome Halco sliced lure. Terry Podbury fished the sandbar inside the grammar school lagoon on the run-off from high tide for a catch of flathead, salmon, snapper, bream and mullet. Pippies caught the most fish. Redfin were caught on lure in Barwon River between the Shannon Ave bridge upstream to Inverleigh. Suspending bibbed lures and soft plastics were best, with the busiest time from late afternoon to dark. The fishing was slow at Wurdi Boluc Reservoir but redfin were caught in the last two hours before dark on Bob n Spoons and Pegron tiger minnow lures. Send reports and photos to info@ raylongtackle.com.au or visit Brian at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights.
GEELONG Cricket Club is in a commanding position going into day-two of its premier league match against HawthornMonash University on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, the Cats, led by in-form paceman Jake Reed (6/32), demoralised the visitors’ batting line-up when it was dismissed for 149 in just 49 overs. Reed’s recent form has been immaculate, resulting in a call-up to the Victorian Second XI last week. Surely he’s in line for higher honours now. In reply, Geelong had 41 overs to face and did so in style, notching up first-inning points easily before finishing the day on 3/264. Aaron Finch smashed an even century from just 70 balls, while James Crossthwaite (87) also found touch with the bat. Geelong will press for outright points tomorrow to cement its place in the top four on the ladder. In the Geelong Cricket Association, the fortunes of Geelong West and Murgheboluc were mixed last weekend as they fought for the last-remaining finals spot. West’s topsy-turvy season continued against St Joseph’s, with the Rams unable to defend their paltry score of 122 as the Joeys finished on 5/139. Meanwhile, the Frogs took on North Geelong at King Lloyd Reserve and, while they battled manfully, the Magpies were good enough to score a healthy 9/249 A 250-run chase is not beyond the talented Murgheboluc line up and, with the extra incentive of a finals spot up for

grabs, West will hope North Geelong can defend its score with all its might. In divison two, Waurn Ponds’ place in the top six is looking shaky after it could only muster up 148 runs against Manifold Heights. Troy Oakley (21) top-scored in a shallow batting effort, with Justin Tarr (4/45) the pick of the Sharks bowlers. In reply, Manifold Heights managed to wipe 49 runs off the deficit for the loss of just one wicket and will go in heavy favourite tomorrow, which won’t please Waurn Ponds but may be of benefit to a few other teams. In division three, Winchelsea has struck top form just when it needed it most, scoring a mammoth 4/375 on dayone of its match against Lethbridge. Rob Stacy (100 not-out) was the star, while Tom Stephenson (76) ensured a big team total. An almost-certain win here will see Winchelsea go a long way toward wrapping up a finals spot, although with the possibility of outright results always looming in this section, no one will rest easily until the final round has been completed.
