The rustle is on IT’S the first crunch of leaves underfoot that let you know its autumn in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. There is no other sound like it, the colours of autumn surrounding you as the leaves fall off the deciduous trees along the road to Healesville or on the way through Olinda and Sassafras. The best part about autumn in the hills isn’t the fact that we’ve left the heat of summer behind, or that we’re about to feel the icy breeze on our faces as winter comes. It’s the perfect weather to enjoy the great outdoors, and just cool enough to need to stop into the local cafe for a coffee and a Devonshire tea. Yes, autumn in the hills is a magical time of year with so much to do. The only way to describe it is Festival Season, with something going on in every nook and cranny on the mountain. In autumn we have more festivals than you can count on one hand … or two for that matter. From the longest lunch to the Herb and Chilli Fest, we have something on offer for everyone. Did I mention the car and bike show? The heritage festival? How about the PAVE Festival? Don’t forget the chestnut festival or even the apple festival. There’s always something to do. Check out our guide to local festivals on page 8. I’m off to run amok in the autumn leaves, enjoy local art and some local produce. You should too. Melissa Meehan Editor

In recent years, Mount Evelyn has evolved into a bustling foodie’s hub, featuring delectable food and quality coffee that would please even the fussiest coffee-lover. Be it indulging in a freshly brewed coffee, browsing the interesting and quaint shops or relaxing in the Station House with a good book - the street is well worth exploring.

2 Walking tracks... Mount Evelyn is known for its remarkable walking tracks that weave in and out of the forest. There is the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct trail that connects Swansea Road to Hunter Road and the Mount Evelyn Forest, which is part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Also meandering its way through the town is the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail. The trail is a walking and cycling track that date backs to the 1800s with remnants of the former station platforms scattered along the route. 6 autumn 2014

xxxxxxxxxxx Local produce is on show at Autumn festivals.

Fall into festival fun By KATH GANNAWAY A FESTIVAL by any other name! Wikipedia describes a festival as “an event ordinarily staged by a local community which centres on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community”. Whatever the definition, somehow wherever the word ‘festival’ crops up, one will invariably find the word ‘fun’ not far away. Autumn is the prime-time for festival fun (see!) in the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges and the range of ‘unique’ aspects that festivals celebrate makes for a smorgasbord of fun and festivity for people of all ages and from all walks of life. Want to celebrate our dynamic, delicious produce? There are festivals that celebrate in their own right chillis, chestnuts and apples. For tastes that are more eclectic, there are long lunches, short lunches and a host of events as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival that celebrate a huge variety of locally produced foods. There are festivals that celebrate heritage and culture, comedy, art, music, family, film, the summer solstice... and living in harmony. Some are just to bring people together for fun! Visitor information centres are the ‘go to’ for all anyone needs to know to get into festival-mode this autumn. So visit the websites below, make the call to put some festival fun into a visit. Hunt for Easter treats By REBECCA BILLS

IT IS the one morning of the year where it is acceptable to eat chocolate for breakfast and not feel guilty. And as children around the region wake up on Easter morning to go searching for the eggs the Easter Bunny has left behind, the famous Annual Oakridge Egg Hunt is getting underway. Oakridge general manager Danny Kane said the event has grown over the last four years from 40 to more than 200 children who participate. “They all have such a blast - the first year we hosted the event it was extremely hot so they had to be quick before they all melted,” he said. “Last year the Easter Bunny dropped 1400 eggs for the children to find. “It’s a free event that Oakridge holds to give something back to our local community.” Mr Kane said last year the venue completed its cellar door and restaurant so this year there is a big space to host the beloved egg hunt. “You can tell the kids that have been doing it for a couple of years as they

come prepared with baskets - the other children all seem to have very full jumpers,” he said.

“The bunny sneaks in around 1pm to hide all the eggs but word is he will have had a very busy evening the night before so sometimes we are not sure when he will arrive.” Visitors can begin their Easter Sunday at Oakridge meeting their mini-pets at the venue’s petting zoo and stay for lunch to enjoy the latest additions to the autumn menu. Parents will also be able to sample the current range of Oakridge wines while the children visit the resident face painting fairy. For more information on the event, email info@oakridgewines.com.au or phone 9738 9900. Also, the Cuckoo Restaurant in Olinda will be hosting an Easter Sunday Lunch with its famous international buffet and unique Bavarian floor show to celebrate the Easter weekend. The Cuckoo Restaurant is at 508 Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Olinda.

Jayde Kane is excited with her find. Picture: CONTRIBUTED

Chainsaw artist’s not stumped By REBECCA BILLS ALL HE needs is a chainsaw and a tree stump to create extraordinary statues and totems. Eltham local Leigh Conkie has battled depression, sex abuse, his own battle with dyslexia and drug abuse finding his only positive outlet is in his chainsaw creations. Starting ou as a builder’s labourer, Leigh said he just could not find any work in the industry. “I saw a tree stump next to my house and I decided to give carving a go,” he said. “So many friends saw the piece and asked if I could do something with stumps in their yard and I realised I could make some money out of this.” Leigh said he now has his work featured at the top of Mount Dandenong - one of the largest sculptures in Australia.

“I work with all different sizes of tree stumps but I definitely prefer to work with the bigger stuff. “These pieces take a few weeks for me to create.” Leigh recently featured in a documentary by filmmaker Ryan Gaskett following his life as a chainsaw sculptor. Mr Gaskett told how the destruction of Leigh’s earlier years had taken its toll and Leigh found the only way out was through the art of chainsaw sculpting. “Truly himself when in the creative space, Leigh uses art to escape his mind and find peace in the moment,” he said. “Despite all of Leigh’s past and present struggles, his truest nature still shines very bright, full of infectious humour and optimism.” Leigh’s studio is located at 1305 Main Road, Eltham.

1057586-SH10-13

His work also features at the Greensborough War Memorial as well as outside Ivanhoe Railway Station and at his studio on Main Road, Eltham.

“I’ve always been a creative character,” he said.

AUTUMN 2014 11

Take the time for a walk by the Yarra River in Warburton.

Highway of history By REBECCA BILLS It is a highway filled with rich history, quaint country living and glorious wineries. That highway is the Warburton Highway and as the autumn canopy evolves, so does the atmosphere of the many towns that the highway passes through. Travelling from Lilydale, Wandin North is the first town that visitors will go through and is the perfect place to stop and kick around the footy at the oval or enjoy a freshly brewed coffee at one of the cafés. Following on from Wandin North is the town of Seville. Seville’s new Waterplay Park is great place for a family picnic on an autumn day and even though the water jets are not on after March, there is still plenty of fun to be had. Built specifically with young children and families in mind, the free park is open all year round. And for the adults, Whispering Hills, Wild Cattle Creek and Killara Estate are all located along the Warburton Highway through Seville and let visitors indulge in the picturesque surrounds with a glass of perfection. After going through Seville, travellers come to the vibrant town of Woori Yallock - an attractive natural setting surrounded by an extensive rural catchment. It is thought that the name ‘Woori Yallock’ is derived from Aboriginal words meaning ‘running creek’ or ‘plenty water’. Running on from Woori Yallock is the town of Launching Place that dates back to the early 1800s. It was at this time that boats where launched into the Yarra River to travel upstream to the goldfields of Gippsland and Woods Point thus gaining the name Launching Place. Along the highway from Woori Yallock to Yarra Junction there is a range of diverse and unique retail businesses to be explored. Yarra Junction is also a great stop off for those travelling in from town looking for a beautiful bed and breakfast escape. Offering an array of five star accommodation along the highway, the centre of town has many shops that can be perused and walking tracks to be explored. Following on from Yarra Junction is the town of Millgrove. Since the early 1900s Millgrove has been predominately a timbermilling and agricultural town. 12 AUTUMN 2014

Although Millgrove has a limited mix of businesses, the neighbouring towns along the highway meet more of the retail options for visitors and residents. A big focal point of the town is the Millgrove Wood Products Sawmill that has been in business for more than 21 years. The fully operational sawmil manages a selective harvesting of trees, logs, milling and creating products of varying sizes and configurations. As visitors keep travelling down the highway, they will feel the sense of wellbeing envelop them as they arrive in Warburton. The lush town, which is surrounded by tall forests of mountain ash, is just 65 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD and is adorned by quirky and unique shops. In 1905, the arrival of Adventists to the area brought several industries that have supported the local community for many years. These included the Sanitarium Health Food Company, Signs Publishing Company and the Warburton Health Care Centre and hospital. However following their closure many residents have left the area. Nonetheless the idyllic and quaint feel of the town has generated renewed interest from weekenders and day trippers from around the state.

Wandin is a perfect place to stop off and enjoy a shop. Touristnews

Festival to draw

The autumn colours throughout the garden ready for the Harvest Festival. Picture: KIM CARTMELL

scarecrow talent By REBECCA BILLS THE effortless perfection of Alowyn Gardens has drawn visitors from near and a far since its humble beginnings 15 years ago. And, as the autumn leaves begin to form, so do the preparations for the Alowyn Gardens Harvest Festival. Proprietors Prue and John Van de Linde said they are very excited about hosting the event and will be running their very first scarecrow competition. “The event is directed at families and there will be food and wine available over the whole weekend,” Mrs Van de Linde said. “We have planted a big sunflower field that should be in full flower by the harvest weekend - the perfect place for our scarecrows to be showcased. “We are partnering with local primary schools for the scarecrow competition but also opening the competition to the general public with a family section and children under 16 section.” Mrs Van de Linde said the event will be judged on Friday 7 March so the winning scarecrow can be showcased over the weekend. Alowyn Gardens is a place that provides information and education for all who experience the exquisite grounds. With comfort and shade in mind, work started at the gardens in 1997 after extensive clearing of the weed and blackberry infested paddocks. The first tree was planted at the grounds in 1999 after a soil management plan was put in place to revitalise the soil which had exhausted goodness after being used for 20 years as a trotting stud.

Now, opened to the public for its fourth season, the garden has been created within an area spanning approximately four acres with strong symmetrical lines that are blurred by the softness of space, colour and trees. Within the four acres there are five clearly defined areas - a perennial border designed to display colour from spring to autumn, a sliver birch forest, an edible garden, a parterre garden and a number of display gardens. A new addition is the French garden that has been planted with an amaranth field and sunflower field for visual impact. Throughout these areas, a 100 metre long rose and wisteria covered archway with a sunken garden and classical fountain is displayed as a centrepiece to provide tranquillity and calmness throughout the space. Over the years Alowyn has been the recipient of many awards including the ABC Gardener of the Year Award in 2008 and featured in both the Better Homes and Gardens magazine and the Yarra Valley and Ranges seasonal publication. Alowyn Gardens Autumn Harvest Festival will be running over the Labour Day weekend, 8-10 March, from 10 am to 5pm. Admission is $9.50 for adults, $8 for concession, 12 to 18 years-ofage $3 and all children under 12 free. The gardens are located at 1210 Melba Highway, Yarra Glen. Pressure’s on for station master By REBECCA BILLS APPLYING for a job with Victorian Railways at the age of 16, Healesville’s Gary Manning had his application denied because he wore glasses. Now, more than 45 years later, Gary’s dream of working with trains is a reality with his title of Station Master at Puffing Billy. Gary said he has always been fascinated with steam trains and loves being able to volunteer his time for something he loves. “For my 50th birthday my family took me on a train ride at Puffing Billy and that’s when I decided to become a volunteer,” he said. “I’ve been Station Master for two years now but I started here as a conductor 10 years ago and worked my up through the volunteers. “The Station Master’s job is quite a stressful one but at the same time it’s extremely satisfying at the end of the day.” The Station Master’s role is that

of ensuring the driver, fireman and guard are ready for duty and there are enough carriages for the amount of tickets sold as well as ensuring all trains are running on time. As well as being a Station Master, Gary is also a booking officer at the railway selling tickets to passenger. “I get to talk to a few hundred people a day which I really love,” he said. Having moved from Tecoma to Healesville on Black Saturday Gary said it takes him about 45 minutes to get to the Belgrave station for the two to three times a week that he volunteers. “Puffing Billy is only able to run due to the volunteers and I love volunteering here - you are surrounded by great people.” Those who are interested in becoming a volunteer at Puffing Billy or who want more information about the railway can visit www.puffingbilly.com. au/volunteering.

cafe culture

Hot shots for chilly visits By JESSE GRAHAM WITH the leaves changing colour and falling from their branches, the temperature begins to drop as autumn gathers pace and it becomes the perfect time to heat up the oldfashioned way - with a coffee. Whether a fan of a straight-up espresso, a creamy cappuccino or a smooth latte, there are numerous cafes dotted along the main streets of local leafy suburbs which are ready to supply a caffeine hit. While noted for its prowess in winemaking, the Yarra Ranges also provides a respectable trade in coffee with numerous local café blends and local coffee and tea companies. Clara, the barista at Healesville’s Harvest Café, shared her tips when it comes to making a perfect cup of coffee. She said that a great coffee blend, good extraction and perfectly textured milk all help when making a tasty drink.

Clara from Healesville Harvest Cafe whips up a latte. Picture: JESSE GRAHAM

1037069-CR36-12

She said that, in her 10 years of experience, she has found that coffee

consumption is varied around the area - however, she noted that lattes always seem to be the most popular. Clara remarked that, for those who can handle the taste, a shot of espresso is a great morning pickme-up, while creamy coffees, such as lattes, are better for an afternoon wind-down. With the great variance in cafes, coffee blends and sizes across the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs, price can differ greatly for a cup of coffee. Prices generally range from $3-$4 for a regular cup, and about $1 extra for a mug and 50 cents extra for soy milk or a double shot, though each individual shop will have its own price list. While price isn’t always indicative of quality, there aren’t many places to go wrong when it comes to a great coffee in the area, and there’s no better way of finding a café to suit a person’s individual style than adventuring by foot through the towns. And the view of the falling, auburncoloured leaves are just a bonus.

pave festival

One of the bands performing for the PAVE Festival.

Market day at Emerald as part of the PAVE Festival.

Arts bring streets to life By REBECCA BILLS RECENTLY titled the 2014 Cardinia Shire’s Community Event of the Year, the PAVE Festival is a time to celebrate all things Emerald. Emerald’s week-long festival attracts about 12,000 people each year and has been running since 2004 - organised entirely by volunteers. The event involves numerous community groups, working together with one purpose, to bring the streets of Emerald alive and build community strength through the arts. Featuring graphic art, photography, dance, theatre, film, music, indigenous and multicultural events throughout the week, the PAVE Festival is a chance for all to have access to arts based projects and performances. Kicking of the PAVE Festival will be the FunFEST, a Family Fun Street Party with a stack of free entertainment and activities. FunFest will include rides, music and dance stages, a battle of the bands performance, exhibitions, demonstrations, Puffing Billy rides, street performances and stalls. Event volunteer and organiser Non Blair said FunFEST is always a great day and it will be a wonderful way for visitors to whet their appetites for the week of activities to follow. “Every day is jam-packed with events - being school holidays there 24 autumn 2014

are heaps of day time activities for the kids as well as night time activities for the adult kids,” she said. “Learn a new skill at a workshop, have some fun with shaving cream art, see an exhibition or come along to one of the evening events.” Supporting the work of local artists, the event is a great economy raiser for the community according to Cardinia Shire Council. Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Graeme Moore said the festival is welldeserving because it shows off the very best of the shire. “Their involvement in our community is much appreciated and we celebrate them and the dedication they continue to show the Cardinia Shire and its residents,” he said. The PAVE Festival is a grassroots community engagement project conceived by Emerald Community House that initiated the Performing and Visual Arts in Emerald (PAVE) project in 2003. This project was implemented as a community development exercise to increase community capacity and synergy. PAVE Festival will be running from 6 to 13 April with the Emerald FunFest kicking off the celebrations. For full program of events, visit www.pave.org.au. For more information on the events, email info@pave.org.au or call 5968 3881. Touristnews

healesville There’s no shortage of goods at Treasures of Istanbul.

Exotic experience By JESSE GRAHAM A MYRIAD of exotic and international products are just a short walk away in Healesville, with a range of stores providing unique items and gifts for those willing to look hard enough. Situated at the end of Healesville’s main shopping strip are Fairly Cambodian, Mekong River Trading Company and Treasures of Istanbul. The three stores all boast varied and unique products on their shelves, with items such as jewellery, boxes, paintings, lights, stationery, clothing and dining sets available for browsers.

the shop’s bamboo clothing was a top-selling item for visitors and that the shop had been successful since opening in August last year. Treasures of Istanbul is located further up the road and focuses specifically on Turkish goods, with owners Ibrahim Durmus and Karyn Hunter behind the helm. The shop originally began in Olinda, with the Healesville shop opening at the start of November. Ms Hunter said the shop has been well supported by locals and visitors who have taken to walking further up the main road to browse their wares.

Fairly Cambodian aims to provide a marketing place for fairly and ethically produced products made by the Khmer people in Cambodia.

She said that the shop has many items, from jewellery to rugs, but that the specially-made Turkish lights in the store were in high demand.

From recycled notepads made with elephant dung and recycled spoons made from bomb-metal, to clothing and a wide range of other products, Fairly Cambodian provides conscionable shopping opportunities for a good cause.

For more information on Fairly Cambodian, visit www. fairlycambodian.com, call 5962 1112 or visit Shop 2/222 Maroondah Highway, Healesville.

Meanwhile, Mekong River Trading Company, which is on the corner of Church Street and Main Street, offers hand-made Vietnamese items such as lacquer-wear boxes, silks, furniture, dining sets and paintings. John Beeston, who runs the shop with his wife Olga Szymiczek said Touristnews

kallista

Beauty of Kallista By REBECCA BILLS NESTLED between Belgrave and Olinda is the charming town of Kallista. The picturesque town in its natural setting is celebrated for its wealth of heritage houses, gardens and country atmosphere that is within commuting distance of Melbourne’s CBD. Emerged in the mountain forests of the Dandenong Ranges, the heart of the town is a quiet corner of speciality shops, cafes, art, craft and an attractive nursery. New to Kallista is Forest Edge Stone, a place where the arts meet the local and wider community in a space where artists can explore new boundaries in their creations. Visitors get to experience the art of stone-masonry and browse the many sculptures, fine art paintings and drawings exhibited throughout the gallery. A few shops down is Things of Clay and Wood - a pottery and wood-turning gallery and woodshop by Anne-Maria Plevier and other renowned artists with wood-turning done on site. For those who are looking for home-wares with a difference, Clementine by Design offers a combination of unique and retro knicks and knacks for around the house. Inspired by nature and midcentury design, Clementine has many one-off pieces ranging from old prints, china and glassware.

Anne-Maria Plevier from Things of Clay and Wood

Kallista is also surrounded by lush forest which is home to Grants Picnic Ground, George Tindale Memorial Gardens and the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Grants Picnic Grounds is located within walking distance for the centre of town and is well known for the native bird feeding area that attracts visitors from across Australia and around the world. Another two kilometres away is the George Tindale Memorial Gardens that includes a unique collection of exotic plants that live beneath a canopy of large mountain ash. The garden is also home to a Kallista Kindergarten Program that sees the children explore and embrace nature in learning. 28 autumn 2014

secret valley

Tunnel’s off the beaten track By JESSE GRAHAM DELIGHTFUL water-play and picnic opportunities await those who are willing to travel off the beaten track, with Little Peninsula Tunnel, located past Warburton. The tunnel was originally created in the 1860s, years before towns like Healesville began to exist, and was created to divert the course of the Yarra River, providing opportunities to search for gold. Travellers will easily be able to find the tunnel area, with signs clearly marked along Woods Point Road - the tunnel lies around 14 kilometres east of Warburton, a few kilometres out of Reefton. Once arriving, a path leads visitors to either side of the tunnel, with one bearing a picnic area and a quiet place to sit and the other an amazing view of the tunnel’s mouth and the flowing river that emerges from it. The river isn’t quite deep enough to swim properly, as it is in Warburton, but is deep enough to wander out and enjoy the cool waters, whether sitting or standing. Being so far removed from both Warburton and Reefton, the only sounds at Little Peninsula Tunnel are the birds and animals in the surrounding forest and the river rushing through the rock face. Heading toward the picnic ground, visitors will be able to walk on a small bridge that runs over the tunnel entrance. There is sporadic tree cover in most of the area, so it’s recommended that visitors use sunscreen on warm days - and bring insect repellent because March flies are a common occurrence in the summer months. Around a kilometre up the road is Big Peninsula Tunnel, another tunnel cut into a rock face, which has similar facilities and stepping stones where travellers can hop over the river as it passes underfoot. Due to the remote nature of the tunnels, visitors should bring their own food and water - or stop in Warburton or Reefton for a bite after their visit.

The opening of the Little Peninsula Tunnel provides a space to sit in the water and watch the river rush by. 114340 Picture: JESSE GRAHAM 30 Autumn 2014

Fresh from the farm

Workshop bottled up By KATH GANNAWAY IT WOULD be sort of quaint to say that everything’s ‘just peachy’ at Rayners Orchard in Woori Yallock... but that would be seriously underselling what this innovative business of the valley’s agricultural and tourism landscape has to offer. Orchardist Len Rayner found his innerentrepreneur a few years back when he saw that the future for smaller-scale orchardists was in offering a range of diverse experiences that re-connect people, local and visitors, to where their food comes from, and the many delights it has to offer. Rayners grows and sells more than 350 varieties of fruit, year round, makes delicious products with fresh fruit from the trees, runs tractor tasting tours and the tastalicious Peach Cafe, and has just launched daily fruit bottling workshops. Autumn is a great time to be a little adventurous when it comes to fruit with some of the more unusual fruits in season, and the bonus of some stunning autumn colour in the groves. For those who have never tried a Pepino, Len describes it as starting off with a cucumber/ rockmelon flavour developing with the rockmelon flavours developing as it ripens. Yum! Yellow-strawberry and Chilean guavas, Dutch medlar, tamarillo, Cape cooseberries and lilly pilly are a few more autumn fruits and, of course, there are the more traditional fruits including the vastly under-rated old-time favourite, rhubarb which might be a vegetable! Len and his staff are pretty excited about the preserving workshops and he says that while they’re aimed at young families they are great fun for anyone who would like to learn to bottle fruit the way grandma used to do it. “There is tremendous satisfaction in being able to put food on the table that you’ve made yourself,” Len said. “You put in a bit of effort for a product that is visually appealing and tastes superb.” The workshops, at 9.30am and 1pm each day, will use whatever fruits are in season with Len and his team more than happy, eager in fact, to inspire some interesting combinations of fruits and juices that result in something completely different to anything on supermarket shelves. Would-be bottlers can ask Len about including a workshop on their itinerary when they are planning a winery tour, or as part of a hen’s party in the valley! To discover even more about what’s on offer at Rayners Orchard, visit www.raynerstonefruit.com.au, phone on 5964 7654 or call in any day at 60 Schoolhouse Road, Woori Yallock.

Smooth sound of autumn “When he was in high school meeting a lot of friends who also were into music and we decided to run these events basically to get the kids to perform in front of people and get a bit more experience. “There are now around 20-odd musicians who change on a weekly basis that play with the original three.” Mr D’Aloisio said the musicians play either classical or old style jazz and always put their own take to the music. Another music event over autumn at local winery Rochford is A Day on the Green featuring Hunters and Collectors on 22 March. Summer Jazz at Seville Hill will be held on 2, 16 and 30 March as well as the 13 and 27 of April. The event is free of charge and located at Seville Hill Winery, 8 Paynes Road, Seville. For more information on the summer jazz events at the winery, call 5964 3284.

By REBECCA BILLS THE spectacular colours of autumn transcending over the deciduous vines and trees brings a unique transformation to the Yarra Valley countryside. And one way to take in the serene surroundings is at the music events which are held at the region’s wineries. Local winery Seville Hill hosts relaxing jazz days where visitors can sit on the terraced lawn under the shade of three large elm trees and take in the smooth sounds of jazz performed by the Chris Dal Trio and Friends. Owner John D’Aloisio said during the growing season, visitors can still come to the winery, listen to wonderful jazz and see what happens when the wines are being made. Mr D’Aloisio said the Summer Jazz Music events that run from September through to April each year were created to give young jazz musicians a platform to perform. “My son is a musician and it is his trio that have performed here since 2004,” he said.

Warrandyte in Autumn is a beautiful place to visit. Stroll along Yarra Street enjoying some fine food and drinks and finding that unique gift from the gorgeous shops. Often there are Sunday music sessions for you to enjoy as you wander and relax. Stay on and dine in any of our wonderful restaurants and cafes, enjoying a wide variety of cuisine on offer from Thai, to Mexican, to Italian and Spanish influence. You could take a coffee, ice cream, pizza or fish and chips down to the river. Look in the Real Estate windows to see where your next home might be and see how you can decorate it stylishly. The Warrandyte Festival is on Saturday March 22nd and Sunday March 23rd. It is a grass roots celebration of Warrandyte. On the banks of the yarra, festival –goers enjoy the Street Parade, the duck race, the billy cart derby, great live music and fabulous festival fare.

By REBECCA BILLS SITUATED in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges National Park are the gruelling 1000 Steps. Testing even the fittest of athletes the steps, as part of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, were titled such due to them representing the Golden Staircase - 2000 steps cut by Australian Army engineers into a track between Uberi and Imita Ridge in Papua New Guinea (PNG). After a $1 million project to upgrade the Kokoda Track Memorial in 2011, the site is now home to information panels, shelters and seating to host public commemorative events such as Anzac Day. As part of the project, a permanent memorial to the 2000 Australians who died fighting at Kokoda is located at the base of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk. Created in the early 1900s, the 1000 Steps were originally made from the trunks of tree ferns laid along the wetter areas of the track to make the climb a little easier. They were then replaced with wooden palings before the more permanent concrete steps were installed in 1950. The park was then adopted by the Victorian veterans of the campaign as their memorial site in 1998 as the resemblance of the walk is said to be very similar to the first 100 metere of Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Along the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk there are 14 plaques dedicated to those who fought and died on the track. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, which incorporates the 1000 Steps, is a three kilometre trail that takes approximately one and a half hours return to complete and is recommended to those of reasonable fitness. The Kokoda Track Memorial and walk is located at Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground in the south-western area of the Dandenong Ranges National Park - 35 kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD off Mount Dandenong Tourist Road.

King Valley Homestead by John Thomas

Di King and John Thomas share a life-long passion for art. Picture: KATH GANNAWAY

Light captures the bush By KATH GANNAWAY Di King and John Thomas share lots of things - including paint under their fingernails. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges have been home and inspiration for artists over the decades and the Healesville-based husband and wife painters are among the best known of the region’s renaissance art movement that has put art back in the picture as a tourism drawcard. The couple are enthusiastic supporters of the local art scene and have exhibited at events such as the annual Open Studios Weekend and group exhibitions, in addition to their own, permanent Di King Gallery in Healesville. The gallery provides an opportunity for visitors to not only see in one place the broad scope of their work and individual styles, but to meet the artists during exhibitions, and at other times throughout the year. Di is a multi-award winning artist whose

work is of an impressionistic realist nature and subjects include nature, landscape and portraiture. Light is a constant character in her works which create the atmosphere suited to the subject. Many of her works capture the essence of the Yarra Valley, and of Australia, featuring the bush, gum trees and cattlemen. Di’s love of the bush and all things Australian and her love of cattle drives, horsemen, river crossings and the High Country as inspiration for her paintings, along with her ploughing scenes, have become synonymous with her art. The search for that elusive ‘special’ subject or scene, the moment or landscape that instantly captivates, is what inspires John, who is also a multi-award winning artist. His works, also realist in style, include landscapes, the sea, boats and beaches... and he will travel endlessly in his search for

Cool and Dusty by Di King

that ‘never to be found’ subject. Being mainly self-taught, he loves the synergy of working in groups saying there is more to be learned on this earth than can be taken in by an individual in one lifetime. Best to share the experience! Both Di and John have works in numerous collections, both private and corporate, within Australia and abroad and are respected artists among their peers in the Yarra Valley and in the broader palette of the art world. The Di King Gallery is open for exhibitions throughout the year, regularly on weekends, and by appointment at other times. It’s easy to find at 32 Maroondah Highway at the western gateway to Healesville and if the ‘open’ sign is not out, a quick call to Di or John on 5962 2557, will provide the opportunity for a visit. Visit www.dikingartist.com.au for information and on-line galleries.

Di has been painting for 30 years and in that time has won many awards and had many solo and group exhibitions. She is well known for her paintings of High Country horsemen, along with her very appealing figurative paintings as well as a variety of many other subjects. Having her own gallery is such an advantage, as a wide range of subject matter can be featured for the many visitors to the gallery.

Tower offers the height of service However the rooms have been renovated to boast all the comforts visitors can expect. David Stirling, who owns the Tower Motel with his wife, Leanne, said that his favourite parts of the motel were the courtyard and the wine bar, which allow visitors plenty of space.

Located half an hour’s drive from Healesville, 90 minutes from Melbourne, the Tower Motel sits in the middle of Marysville’s main tourist strip, Murchison Street.

He said that visitors would get the extra mile of service in Marysville, with interaction between management and visitors and packages to meet their customers’ whims.

The building’s exterior is from the 1970s, with the building being one of three left standing after the tragic Black Saturday bushfires levelled the town.

The Tower’s 15 rooms come equipped with televisions, DVD players, Foxtel, heating and cooling, ensuite bathrooms, a bar fridge, tea and coffee and the King Deluxe Rooms come

Fine drop at

Yileena Park By JESSE GRAHAM FOR a glass of some of the finest wine in the Yarra Valley while you enjoy the leafy autumn weather, it’s hard to go past Yileena Park, which sits just five minutes out of Yarra Glen. The winery, which first began as a cattle stud in 1992, opens from Thursday through to Monday, 11am-5pm, in its upstairs tasting room. Visitors can sit on the balcony at the winery and see as far as Healesville while enjoying a glass of Yileena Park’s finest wines, whether red or white is the preferred drop. Bob and Dianne Curtis own the 40-acre winery, and Bob said that, following the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires that tore through the area, he and his wife concentrated on the winery 100 per cent. “From the start, we wanted to grow limited amounts of intense fruit to create high-quality wine,” he said. He said the wines at Yileena Park were usually aged for around four years before they were released, with six years of ageing for the winery’s reserve range. “It’s taken a long time, but we’ve gained a

reputation for having aged reds in the Yarra Valley,” Bob said. He said that the winery’s Victorian-style drawing room, located upstairs, was a favourite for visitors and the atmosphere at Yileena Park was warm and inviting for small and intimate events. For Bob, the ageing of the winery’s wine and the intimate spaces for visitors were a huge point of difference that sets the winery apart from its competitors in the Yarra Valley. Yileena Park has a range of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Rose and sparkling wines on offer to taste and buy, with sales available from their website. Yileena Park is located at 245 Steels Creek Road, Yarra Glen, and is open from 11am-5pm Thursday-Monday. For more information, call 9730 1977, email info@yileenapark.com.au or visit www. yileenapark.com.au.
