Queenslanders – they’ve written books about them, magazines can’t get enough of them to show off, they’ve been in films, television shows and have finally been recognised by our government as being of national importance for their preservation, largely due to community awareness of urban heritage, I suspect.

We live in Noosa but, as some of you may know, I also specialise in the restoration of Queenslanders, many of which are in and around Brisbane and the Hinterland. A most common element of these houses is the use of vertical stumps, initially of timber, used to raise the main house off the ground, so that the building seems to ‘float’ above the terrain. A major advantage of this type of construction is that the buildings are highly adaptive, making it relatively easy to raise, lower, reorientate or completely relocate them. Such was the case for this beautiful and historic Queenslander, which was moved some years ago to acreage in the outer suburbs of Brisbane. As frequently happens, the house had suffered the trials of many old buildings, with unbecoming additions, paint colours, fixtures and fittings. The opportunity to work on this beautiful restoration was something I totally embraced. Working in close liaison with the owner, the challenge was to design furniture, window treatments, finishes

and fixtures that complemented the restoration, yet still make it family-friendly. Most of the original features of the home were reinstated. The selection of interior and exterior paint colours was crucial in creating the traditional ambience needed. Retaining features such as fan lights, ceiling roses and keeping the original floor plan, where doors and windows are aligned, allows cross-ventilation for passive cooling, one of the innovative methods traditionally used for uninterrupted air flow in Queenslanders. This needed to be taken into account when deciding on curtains and light fixtures. The antique brass rods,

rings, finials and tie backs, imported from France, are an essential component for the window treatments. The chandeliers and wall lights are new but again in a style appropriate for the home. Before
