GLAM ROCK’S glory days of big heels, makeup, leather and high volume are alive and well thanks to Geelong musical institution The Glitter Gang. By day the band’s members are steady middle-aged citizens beavering away in IT, marketing and labs. But since 1992 they’ve been hitting local stages as other-wordly rock gods Barry Glitter, Stevie Knievel, Bobby Dazzler, Mickey Blitz and Marsha Brady in a welter of spacesuits, flares, brutish open chests and 747-wing collars. The band will again reprise the hits of ’70s icons like The Sweet, KISS, ELO, Skyhooks, Status Quo, ABBA, Sherbert, Hot Chocolate and Gary Glitter on Sunday at Geelong’s inaugural Motor City Music Festival. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously,” admits frontman Barry Glitter, also known as Grant Whiteside. “I don’t think glam rock takes itself too seriously at all even though there’s some fantastic music and musicians. “Really, it’s all about having fun. It’s a bit of theatre.” Whiteside said the timeless appeal of glam rock had earned The Glitter Gang a new generation of followers in their 20s. “Lots of them have been brought up on mum and dad’s music – they know every word of the songs.” The band has been a popular regular at the Barwon Club hotel for over two decades but otherwise maintains a relatively low profile, playing just the odd other weekend gig and depending on the members’ mums to repair their costumes. Whiteside promised “a bit of eye-candy for the cougars” at the festival. Other punters are advised to attend for the music.

GEELONG is shaping up as the central battleground for this year’s state election, according to political observers. They said the region’s manufacturing jobs crisis, two marginal seats and the high profile of its mayor combined to put Geelong front and centre of Liberal and Labor political campaigns. The lower house seats of Bellarine and Geelong, both Labor but with notionally-reduced margins following boundary changes, were critical to power in Spring Street, they said.

Deakin University politics lecturer Geoffrey Robinson forecast a “strong focus on Geelong seats”. “Geelong proper, you’d have to see as improved for Labor by redistribution but the Liberals might think, ’We have Ian Trezise retiring, that gives us a bit of a chance’. “With Lisa Neville in Bellarine, since Whittington and St Albans are out with the redistribution it’s now notionally Liberal, so expect attention there particularly.” Ms Neville agreed Geelong

SUMMER’S heatwave took its toll on Geelong’s flying fox colony, with around 300 juveniles dying and many others requiring rehydration. Department of Primary Industries’ Mark Breguet said four straight days of 40 degrees Celsius in January also affected small marsupials such as possums. Eastern Park has a colony of up to 17,000 grey-headed flyingfoxes, which are susceptible to extreme heat.

Colonies in south-eastern Queensland suffered one of the most dramatic animal die-offs recorded in Australia when about 45,500 flying foxes died on one day of extreme heat this year. Mr Breguet said Corio Bay breezes prevented a higher death toll in Geelong. “The Eastern Park site is reasonably bat-friendly, being on the southern end of the bay.” Mr Breguet said authorities taped off an area around the colony to allow injured bats to

recover. Wildlife shelters treated injured bats, he said. “They gave them fluids and rehydrated them so they could re-join the colony. It doesn’t take long.” Mr Breguet said the presence of lyssavirus among the bats meant the public should leave injured flying foxes alone. “Only those trained and properly immunised should handle the bats.” Mr Breguet said injured wildlife could be reported by phoning 136 186 or 0417 380 687.

Build ‘icon’ for jobs, says boss By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A LEADING Geelong engineering firm wants to adapt its commercial wind turbine technology to an iconic structure proposed for Geelong’s waterfront. Austeng managing director Ross George said the Sea Dragon structure should be built to generate jobs. Austeng has built uniquely designed silent wind turbines for business and industrial sites on behalf of Renewable Energy Solutions Australia. JOH Architect’s Sea Dragon won $10,000 from Senia Lawyers in an Icon for Geelong competition to design a landmark for the city. The design features nine wind turbines powering a floating corkscrew-like structure driving an undulating wave.

JOBS: Austeng’s Ross George. “Our clients are happy for us to use the turbine technology in constructing the Sea Dragon,” Mr George said. “It all fits in nicely if we can use something developed in Geelong by a Geelong company. Having it made in Geelong would add some weight to the final impact of the project.

“It makes it more iconic if it’s made here and by creating local jobs I’d hope there’s a better chance of getting funding.” Mr George said the design’s six-metre diameter turbines would produce around 225 megawatt hours of power. “Using wind power to generate the electricity would allow us to feed a lot back into grid and use a bit to turn the Sea Dragon.” Mr George estimated construction and installation would cost $2.5 million to $3 million. “The next step is to get people excited about the prospect because it would be a boost for the city and help mark the revitalisation. “It would be a benchmark project for the new Geelong, demonstrating we’re modern, renewable and smart.”

Languishing city sites set for redevelopment By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CREATION of a medical precinct, business hubs, residential developments and office space are among potential uses for up to 10 councilowned sites in central Geelong. City Hall hopes a $120,000 investigation into its under-used sites will give central Geelong’s revitalisation a shot in the arm, according to Cr Michelle Heagney. The planning and central Geelong portfolio-holder said the investigation, due to report in May, would contain professional advice on the best redevelopment for each site. The sites under investigation in-

clude Haymarket car park, Lt Ryrie St car park, a civic and government accommodation site in Mercer St, Lt Malop St car park, Civic Centre car park, Busport and Geelong Railway Station. Cr Heagney said Haymarket could lend itself to development of a medical precinct linking St John of God and Geelong hospitals. Busport had capacity to add to its height to extend its development opportunities, she said. “We want to know what kinds of development might bring jobs to Geelong,” Cr Heagney said. “We’re seeking expert advice about what would be the best outcome

for central Geelong if we put sites out for an expression of interest. “We’ll get expert property development advice about what makes sites attractive, what potential uses might be and what density might be best. “We’re looking for advice on which ones to do first because we can’t do them all at once. “These are large parcels of council land in central Geelong and we want to make sure we get it right because we can only develop them once.” Cr Heagney said after the report was completed council could consider how to manage sites with existing uses such as car parking.

Council would also consider the best approach to redevelopments, including City Hall managing the projects, putting sites out to tender or instituting a public-private partnership, she said. Mayor Darryn Lyons believed that Geelong must “look creatively and commercially” at central city land. “I’ve got big plans for Geelong and a dynamic city heart will be at the centre of our success. “Now’s the time for change and we need to look creatively and commercially at these sites that have huge potential.”

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons is on a collision course with angry residents desperate to fight new high-rise residential zonings across Geelong. The controversial four-storey zonings could become a hot election issue for Geelong’s marginal seats at this year’s state poll after anxious protesters descended on a council meeting to voice their disapproval. But Cr Lyons has advocated city buildings heights “a mile high” while objectors argue Geelong’s unique lifestyle and amenity will be torn apart. Groups across Belmont, Newtown and Geelong West are up in arms at the prospect of three and fourstorey apartment blocks next door or in heritage areas. Council has sent the proposed rezonings to a State Government-appointed panel for review. Residents, fearing the rezonings are a fait accompli, are organising legal fighting funds. Geelong MP Ian Tresize said the proposed rezonings had caused “a lot of anger and frustration”. Cr Trezise, who has lodged his own objection, said the ambience and character of some inner-suburban areas “could be totally destroyed”. “It would appear there’s no real rhyme or reason to how it’s been implemented and I know there’s major concern and anger,” he said. “This could well become a state election political issue and, as a state MP, I call on the council and panel to ensure local residents are listened to and their concerns acted upon.” Cr Lyons said Geelong needed to find a balance between heritage and growth. “We (council) don’t have a say in it. The State Government is going to rule on it,” he said. “I’m not against it, though. I think it gives the community the opportunity to go to the panel and state their case and it’s actually the minister who decides.” Cr Lyons said central Geelong should have no height limits. “How high? A mile high,” he said. “I want to grow the economic development of the city. We’ve got to go forward, we can’t go backwards. We’re not going to attract people without big development. “Planning Minister Matthew Guy just approved five 60 to 75-storey buildings in Melbourne. It would be great to see them in Geelong - that would be excellent.”

That honour apparently goes to Geelong’s second mayor, James Austin, whose vertical coiffure preceded Cr Lyons’ hairdo over 160 years ago. Mr Austin’s indisputably upright hair-lick is recorded photographically for posterity on a City Hall honour board dated 18511852. Like the present-day encumbent, Mr Austin oversaw a city in transition as Geelong’s agrarianbased enterprises of the era found themselves facing the upheaval of the Gold Rush. “It’s funny isn’t it? The councillor is adamant that Geelong’s level of internet availability and quality is holding the region back and wants a better service. He has started a B4G campaign, seeking feedback from broadband users about the quality of their internet experience. The campaign follows the release of federal Department of Communications mapping, revealing 75 per cent of Geelong has “poor” or “very poor” broadband quality. Large areas of suburban Geelong have download speeds of eight megabits (Mbps) or less, with many between zero and four megabits. Only small pockets close to exchanges can achieve download speeds up to 24Mbps, according to a Broadband Availability and Quality Report.

Federal Government’s proposed National Broadband Newtowrk (NBN) will deliver speeds of 25Mbps. Cr Macdonald said he knew of several office building projects that were on hold awaiting the provision of fibre cable. “The developers know that their projects are not viable without fibre but no one knows what’s happening. Everyone’s waiting and it’s all come to a stop. “With the loss of manufacturing jobs the politicians tell us we need to turn to smart solutions but we need fibre to compete with the rest of the world. “We have companies wanting to come to Geelong and others wanting to expand but investment decisions are on hold because we don’t know if we’ll get fibre.” Cr Macdonald said feedback from broadband users across Geelong would help ICT Geelong push the case for a high-priority on the next NBN roll-out.

BROADBAND quality in much of Geelong’s southern suburbs is “abysmal”, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. Ms Henderson told federal parliament her electorate had many “deficient” areas needing prioritisation for NBN connection. A speed test on new government website mybroadband.communications.gov.au would tell users the quality of their internet connections, she said. “I’m calling on everyone in Corangamite who has poor or slow broadband to do this speed test so we have the data and we can assess what we need to do in areas.” Ms Henderson said the test, available in about a month, would send data straight to Department of Communications so it could track speeds of everyone in the electorate.

Funding revs up hope for 150 jobs UP TO 150 new jobs will be generated at Deakin University’s new-tech Carbon Revolution centre at Waurn Ponds. A $5 million injection from federal and state governments and Ford will help create the jobs in manufacturing carbon-fibre wheels. The grant will allow Carbon Revolution to develop a $23.8 million manufacturing facility to supply the global automotive industry. Carbon Rev hopes to seal a deal with a big international carmaker to fit its wheels as standard equipment on some models but has yet to name the brand.

Carbon Revolution is the world’s first commercial manufacturer of carbon-fibre wheels for cars. Premier Denis Napthine said the company was one of Geelong’s many success stories. “Carbon Revolution has a bright future here in Geelong making quality carbon fibre products for the automotive industry,” he said. “This strategic partnership builds on the positive work my Government has already undertaken in providing Carbon Revolution with a previous grant of $250,000 leading to the creation of 20 new full-time jobs. “These new investments in

manufacturing show Victoria’s capabilities in driving innovation in advanced manufacturing, food processing and services and a wide range of industrial and consumer products.” Ford Australia president Bob Graziano said the company, which ceases manufacturing in Geelong in 2016, was “absolutely committed to transforming” its Australian business, “including supporting employees directly affected by our changes”. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the project was “a perfect example of the sort of work that the Geelong region can excel in as our economy transitions and modernises”.

REAL-TIME timetables for buses and trains matched to urban transport hubs have been proposed as part of a regional transport vision. Consultant AECOM’s $100,000 study for councils alliance body G21 also flagged studies into reserving a public transport corridor to Torquay and restoring rail services to Drysdale. G21 deputy chair Jason Trethowan said the ability for public transport users to know when a bus or train would actually arrive would “be fantastic”. “Timetables are intended to

be observed but we accept they’re not always 100 per cent on time,” he said. “As we get more visitors coming to region and we encourage people who aren’t used to catching public transport, people need real-time information.” Mr Trethowan said the information could be available through a smart phone app. “With location services you can track where a bus or train is to see when it will actually arrive.” The study also suggested more transport hubs, particularly in major regional towns and at urban interchanges.

“This is a growing region and the vision is to provide amenity in areas where businesses are operating and where population is increasing,” Mr Trethowan said. “Creating interchanges at strategic locations like railway stations and Avalon Airport will make it quicker to get around the region and to Melbourne to reduce bottlenecks.” Extending public transport to Drysdale and Torquay was an “aspirational” part of long-term planning, Mr Trethowan said. “The car should become a last resort,” he said.

Letters Another ludicrous fine MY HUSBAND and I have read with interest all the Independent’s letters regarding the right-turn lights at the intersection of The Boulevard and Melbourne Rd, Norlane, and ours is just one more complaint. It was good to read there will be an investigation into this particular set of lights (Independent, 28 February). My husband was also pinged at these lights and received a $361 fine and three demerit points. The fine notice stated an elapsed time of .6 seconds, which is ludicrous because anyone would struggle to cross the white stop line in that time. C Berry Ocean Grove

Time to ID opportunities GEELONG is going through a difficult period with sustained job losses. But this state’s second largest city has survived significant economic downturns in the past and will do so this time. This is not a time for gloom and doom but rather a time for planning for the future. The economic model on which Geelong has been based is no longer relevant and new industries, new economic activities, must be attracted to this city. For example, a Yarra Street Pier, incorporating a convention centre and retail, hospitality, market, accommodation and berthing facilities, priced at roughly $25 million, could be solely a private-sector-funded project. While Avalon Airport requires public funding for a rail-link, of equal importance is a continuation of supportive governance and the contracting of a savvy, international, multi-faceted carrier. You’re invited to party I LIVE in in the older part of Portarlington where, essentially, the original residents are pensioners and others have purchased property to retire. But this idyllic life is being threatened by council being hell bent on putting up as many double-storey dwellings as possible to help entrepreneurs. Is council being lenient or going ahead with planning amendments to make sure these projects can go ahead and the developers can do what they want? At a planning application panel hearing, which in my opinion was a kangaroo court, we were given three minutes to have our say and the same people pushing for the plan were the hearing panel. As I live opposite a proposed mini city of six double-storey units and one-single storey unit on half an acre, I will fight it all the way. I would like to form a political party and stop the Planning Minister, who probably hasn’t even been down here. I would like to hear from like-minded people interested in joining the party or giving some input. I have appealed at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which hopefully will be more even-handed than council, which is supposed to be working for us. I am not inexperienced, as I was a foundation member of the Australian Democrats. No house or vacant site is safe under the new rezoning, so please contact me if you can help by

Bring back rego labels VICROADS needs to re-evaluate its decision to not send out annual registration labels. People on limited incomes need a reminder at least one month prior to the expiration of the registration period for budget purposes. Linking registration to number plates allows people with false plates and without third-party cover to cause tremendous difficulties if one is unfortunate enough to have an accident with such a driver. Even if the plates are genuine and the registration and third-party cover invalid, a simple scrape or dent in a car park next to such a vehicle will cause insurance premiums to rise for the honest people who pay comprehensive insurance. Again the miscreant gets off scot-free. More and more people will be on the roads in unregistered vehicles. VicRoads recently ran a quarter-page ad for up to 15,000 motorists who have not received their licence renewal notices due to an administration error. I urge everybody to get a hard copy receipt for their car registration and to attach it to their Sun visor as a reminder of the expiry date because there will be more administrative errors that will cause trouble and inconvenience, all in the name of cost-cutting. I strongly protest this thoughtless action of VicRoads and I hope the labels are reinstated forth-with. J Jones Ocean Grove

Law and ordered AFTER reading so much in our press about bashings, thuggery and even murder, surely it’s time for the normal, quiet majority to reclaim what is lawful, peaceful and right. We should be able to walk down the street in safety, go to the pub peacefully and even go out on the town knowing we will return home without being bashed or killed. We ought to be able to party with our friends without the acrid fumes of marijuana permeating the air and without stumbling across used syringes in the toilets. He’s bloggin’ the blues By MICHELLE HERBISON UNIQUE meetings and experiences on the road are often perks of a musician’s job that audiences merely hear about in stories and songs. But finger-picking Geelong bluesman Brian Fraser is taking storytelling to the next level with his “60 seconds on the road” video blog. Fraser began posting the short videos on his website a few years ago, aiming to introduce his fans to the remarkable people and places of his touring journeys over 30 years. “These days with technology it’s so simple to do it. I can do the whole thing on my iPad and upload it,” he explained. A revisit to a friend’s property at Wells Station, near Canberra, last year prompted Fraser to recollect in video a song he wrote about the owners’ struggle with property developers. “It’s about my friends’ old farmhouse and they were going to pull it down and put a suburb right through it. They did build a suburb but they actually kept the homestead,” Fraser recalled. “They had a get-together there to celebrate the fact that they’re going to keep the place. My friends still live there and it’s one of those very peaceful spots.” Ghostly happenings at Tasmania’s Forth Pub inspired another of Fraser’s songs, which he wrote one morning while staying at the hotel. “Lots of weird things have happened there and they all blame Ernie the ghost. He used to run the hotel and was killed in the hallway in 1972,” he said. In a spooky coincidence, after Fraser played the song to the locals they pulled out old newspaper clippings to find one of the articles began with the exact same words as his song: “He died in a pool of blood”.

Doorstep Production’s Next to Normal will take an unblinking look at mental illness through one family’s story, with O’Donnell at the helm. O’Donnell will lead the six-member cast, a “picture-perfect family unit” fractured by their mother’s bipolar disorder. The plot traverses an emotional wilderness, exploring the issues of mental illness and its ensuing social stigma, drug abuse, grief and loss. Director Darylin Ramondo said writer Brian Yorkey’s razer-sharp dialogue and witty lyrics within the serious storyline could surprise audiences. “The underlying theme of the show is very powerful but it’s presented in a humorous, heartfelt way that I think our audiences are going to find not only deeply touching but highly entertaining.” The production has won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three Tony Awards including best musical score for Tom Kitt’s work. Ramondo said the performance would resonate with Geelong’s population since government statistics showed 45 per cent of Australians directly experienced a mental illness in their lifetime. “We know that so many people can relate to the themes in Next to Normal,” he said. Doorstep Arts will present Next to Normal at Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s (GPAC) Drama Theatre from 14 to 33 March. Tickets are available from GPAC.

ADULTS and children can now discover the secrets of pizza making at Grovedale’s Perrettis. Partnering with training organisation Steps Australia, Perrettis owner and chef Simon Parrott is running hands-on sessions teaching everything from the fundamentals of dough-making right up to sampling the flavours of pizza and gnocchi. So far the children’s pizza classes have been such a success that parents want to get involved too. “The kids’ pizza classes we’ve run so far have been getting the children excited about learning to cook and the safety aspects of being involved in a kitchen,” Simon says. The adults’ classes will be similar but more complex, covering more information about ingredients and techniques for pizza and gnocchi making. “Everyone gets an opportunity to jump in and do it then we’ll sit down, eat the pizza and have a glass of wine, then get back up

NO car company has attacked the booming SUV market with more gusto than Nissan. The newest and smallest of the Nissan SUV range is the Juke which arrived here in October 2013, although it had been on sale globally since mid2010. The turn indicators on the Juke sit on top of the wheel arches and are visible from within the car. Some find this distracting so try and test the car at night if you have any concerns. Both front and rear wheel arches bulge out to give Juke a Popeye-like muscular stance while ‘hidden’ rear door handles provide five-door convenience with three-door styling. Nissan Juke comes with two 1.6-litre petrol engines. Each of the CVTs have preset ratios when a manual override is needed. All Juke models have Nissan’s Dynamic Control System with a choice of three drive modes, Normal for everyday driving, Eco for maximum efficiency and Sport for extra performance. Inside the Juke, stying is less adventurous than outside although the large centre console and gear lever housing continue the circular theme. Interior space is limited but wellmanaged although taller rear seat occupants could find their head scraping on the ceiling. Rear legroom is better but is offset by a small (251-litre) boot meaning that the 60/40 folding rear seatback is likely to come into play quite frequently for transporting even moderate amounts of cargo. There’s good front headroom and the driver’s seat is comfortable and supportive although the absence of telescopic steering wheel adjustment does dictate seat positioning more than we’d like. All Juke models get front, side and curtain airbags; stability and traction control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; ISOFIX child seat anchorage;

ST-S and Ti-S add a reversing camera, automatic headlights with twilight detection, and rain sensing variable windscreen wipers. All models come with Bluetooth hands-free telephone but only the ST-S and Ti-S models include audio streaming, quickly becoming a musthave feature with tech-savvy buyers. The upper-specced variants also get a 5-inch LCD monitor that displays satellite navigation as well as audio, phone and driver data. There are also six speakers (two more than the ST). We were able to test both the lowered-powered 2WD ST and turbocharged AWD ST-S during our recent Juke road test. The more enthusiastic driver will be attracted to the extra power and torque from the turbo engine although if they don’t want to do their own gear changing then they’ll need to pay the extra near-$4000 and step up to the AWD Ti-S. The DIG Turbo engine does add a different dimension to the Juke with the sort of driving enjoyment that would be expected from an SUV. It would be a stretch to call it a hot hatch, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had. The comfort/ride balance is just right and Juke gripped corners with reassurance and little body roll. Like its Micra sibling Nissan Juke is a car that dares to be different and there’s no doubt that many buyers, especially younger ones, will jump into Nissan Juke on looks alone. Engine performance, especially from the DIG Turbo, is excellent and pricing is comparable to its competitors in this all-new category. WHEN we road tested the allnew Proton Preve sedan at its introduction early in 2013 we were impressed by its ride and handling but felt it needed more power to match the chassis dynamics. Late in the year the importers added the option of a turbocharged engine in a new model called Preve GXR Turbo. At this stage the Preve GXR engine sits only alongside a CVT automatic transmission with seven preset ratios should the driver wish to take some manual control at times. We were impressed in our initial test drives with the way the Malaysian sedan handled on its Lotus tuned suspension. Styling is neat and tidy without being in any way outstanding. No one is going to rave over the shape of this sedan, then again it

The interior of these Protons have good seating room for four adults, five without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. Rear seat legroom is excellent and we had no trouble carrying four adults for an extended social trip. Three adults in the back is a squeeze, but three kids works fine. The boot is large and has a wide opening and regular interior shape. The rear-seat backrest can be folded down in a 67/33 fashion to further increase carrying capacity and cope with long loads. The CVT transmission works

particularly well with the turbocharged engine as it drops to lower ratios immediately the driver pushes on the accelerator. By doing so it gets the engine through the period of turbo lag, thus producing faster throttle response than in other turbo engines. Ride comfort is generally good, though some big bumps and dips do catch it out, perhaps the suspension travel is a little short for Australia’s rough and ready back roads. Handling continues to impress - but don’t expect to get a sports sedan for this sort of money as even the turbocharged model is aimed more at comfort than sharp steering and handling. Standard active safety features include Electronic Stability Control with Brake Assist that incorporates Traction Control and ABS with EBD.

IndySport Cats’ finals hit-out

GEELONG Cricket Club will resume Saturday’s match ideally placed to finish its home-and-away campaign on a winning note. The Cats bowling line-up showed no ill effects of missing star paceman Jake Reed to state duties, dismissing its host for just 134 in 50 overs. Justin McPhee (4/19) was again the destroyer, while veteran Marc Carson (3/25) chipped in with some tidy bowling of his own. Geelong had 40 overs to face on day one and did so positively, moving to 4/123 at sumps. Opener James Crosthwaite (39) top scored, while Hayden Butterworth (38) found some touch. Geelong will resume needing just 12 runs to win and, with a top-four position on the table already sewn up, will most likely look to use the day as batting practice. In Geelong Cricket Association, the division one season is going right down to the wire. An exciting finish on Saturday will determine who takes sixth spot and the right to contest this year’s finals. Geelong West, currently sixth, has its destiny in its own hands as it attempts to chase down South Barwon’s 210. The Magpies, as they have done all year, will rely heavily on Jake Thorne and Andrew Ferguson to chase down those runs. Newtown & Chilwell has posted a competitive total of 240 against East Belmont, Justin Foss (86) the star, batting well with the tail to keep the team’s hopes alive. Finally, Murgheboluc will need to rely on a lot of results going its way before even contemplating chasing down St Joseph’s first innings total of 261. No doubt lots of scores will be relayed around tomorrow as teams keep one eye on their own game and one on all the other games affecting their fate.

In division two, sixth-placed Waurn Ponds can almost write off its season after allowing St Alban’s Breakwater to pile on 322 last week. It appears the Eagles’ premiership hopes will come to an end tomorrow. With four teams on equal seventh place ready to take its spot, Newcomb & District and Torquay look the worst-placed to proceed into next week’s finals. The Dinos only have 128 to defend against Modewarre, which is already 2/47, while Torquay will struggle to chase down Bell Post Hill’s 314. That leaves Manifold Heights needing to chase down Alexander Thomson’s 158 and St Peter’s requiring just 134 against Marshall. While both those teams should win, Manifold Heights is the favourite to play finals courtesy of its superior percentage. Take nothing for granted, though, because a few twists and turns are sure to eventuate tomorrow. In division three, sixth-placed Corio has already won against Lethbridge, meaning this season’s finalists are now locked in. While Meredith could technically still pull of a miraculous outright, the position of its match against Bell Park indicates virtually no chance of that happening. The rest of the finalists can use tomorrow to fine tune their games for the coming few weeks when it’s all on the line.

Warriors come out to play for a 20th title By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors have won the City of Greater Geelong Diversity Cup in a penalty shootout against Corio. The Warriors claimed their 20th title amid supporters spurring on their teams with singing and instruments to provide an entertaining match. The first half was cagey, with neither team penetrating often enough but willing to make the tough tackles. North was forced to work hard with 10 players when Michael Boyar was sent off for his second bookable offence before half-time. Corio striker Vedran Stojanovic hit a cracking shot into the top corner to put Corio 1-0 up early in the second half. Corio toiled with the lead under pressure from North Geelong until the 75th minute when Matt Townley levelled the scores for the Warriors from a penalty. The tempo lifted as both teams traded blows until the penalty shoot-out. North converted first through Townley before Corio’s Steve Luczo hit the cross bar. Tony Saric and Stojanovic both scored, with North’s Reha Kurul also putting his shot away. Former Warriors veteran Adrian Cervinski missed his chance to keep Corio in the match when Franco Saric palmed the kick around the post.

Snapper anglers on outer QUALITY snapper were caught in Corio Bay’s outer-harbour over the past week, especially on soft plastics. Danny Clapinski and Peter Bacely hit the water before daylight for a bag of fish to more than 5kg. Also out before daylight, Grant Thompson fished Hermsley’s spoil grounds where his sounder lit up with fish. They turned out to be salmon to just on 1kg but when they disappeared he began catching snapper to more than 3kg until the Sun broke through. Don Martin fished Wilson Spit late Saturday night when just on midnight his two rods folded with a pair of gummy shark around 5kg each. He fished for another three hours, managing two snapper around 3kg. Paul Carmichael drifted the southern edge of the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds where undersize snapper were plentiful until just on dark, after which he caught a bag-limit catch of fish to 1.5kg. Lauren Alford fished the platforms near North Shore rocks where the under-size fish were also busy. With patience he managed a nice pinkie of around 33cms. Grant Tanner fished close in at Bird Rock for a bag-limit catch of whiting on pippie. The fishing was best the last two hours before dark. Paul Carter and a mate drifted in 10m off St Leonards where they caught many flathead on blue bait and soft plastics, with the latter returning the best results in numbers and size. Anglers jigging inside Port Phillip Heads at the bend in the channel caught kingfish to 10kg. Slow trolling weighted white Slug Go soft plastics caught fish of a similar size. Offshore reports were mixed, with many struggling to find the bait fish that attracted tuna and kingfish in recent weeks. Troy Mann fished off Cinema Point where he caught four kingfish around 65cm along with a 1.5m thresher shark. Stan Knight trolled the shallow grass beds from Queenscliff to St Leonards to catch plenty of pike. Using small diving-minnow-pattern lures, his fish averaged 80cm but a few were over 1m. Surf angling conditions were difficult but snapper were taken

Anglers spinning the rocks just past Lorne caught quality salmon from the deeper-water rock platforms on small, metal baitfish lures around the 30g. Harrison Marchant fished the Barwon River estuary where fish were running his reel but failing to hook up. He began holding his rod and hooked up on the next bite with an under-size mulloway of 58cm, which he returned along with two others caught separately. Shaun Cooper fished the Barwon River at Queen’s Park with live minnow, catching redfin. Most were too small but he managed two of 900g. Lure has been best on the redfin upstream of Buckley Falls all the way to Inverleigh. Anywhere with downed timber has been working. Wurdi Boluc Reservoir began producing some big reddies for anglers with enough casting endurance. Late in the evening has been best. Last weekend when I fished the reservoir Mark McPherson landed the best fish while casting Waxwing lures, which he let sink close to the bottom before retrieving slowly. This weekend’s tides should be ideal for the surf in the evening, while freshwater anglers could try Wurdi Boluc Reservoir. Kingfish should also be available in The Rip for anglers working jigs in the 120g to 200g range. Be mindful of other boats and anglers because controlling a boat in the tide as well as fighting a fish can be tricky in The Rip. Also please move as soon as possible when a ship approaches because they cannot easily see small boats, which have the responsibility of getting out of the way. Leisurescape goes for gold A GEELONG company is going into the Guinness Book of Records after supplying a swim spa used to set a world record. Australian marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel set the record by swimming non-stop for 16 hours in a Leisurescape Spas product at the Pool and Spa Expo in Melbourne last month. Chloe is a veteran of marathon open water swims, including the English Channel, but had to abandon a swim from Cuba to Florida last year when jellyfish stings left her in excruciating pain.
