Call for cops FRUSTRATED Taylors Hill residents plan to ramp up their calls for a 24hour police station in Caroline Springs, after several incidents in the last three months have left them even more fearful for their safety. Led by Melton City councillor Lara Carli, the Taylors Hill Safety Committee is gaining strength in the area and is calling on police to meet them and discuss the hot topics of drugs and burglaries in the area. “The group feels more unsafe now than ever,” Cr Carli told Star. “We’re trying to keep our children safe ... but I was taken aback when I
heard about the drug-related incidents and finding needles in the local playground.” Cr Carli said as the community grew, so too should the local police force. Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton told Star the police service area recently received an additional numbers of officers which had allowed the station to be manned on Tuesday and Thursday evening and Saturday during the day. Insp Mutton said his vision was that the police station would one day be open until 10pm on Monday to Friday and during the day on both Saturday and Sunday.

Already thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the State Government to “make our community safe again by providing more police officers to be based at Caroline Springs Police Station and for the station to be open 24 hours a day and operating seven days a week.” Taylors Hill resident Olivia Liron said residents were feeling “scared” and had even begun organising stalls at local shopping centres to gain support from the community. Ms Liron said while police might be on patrol, a resident could wait well over an hour to get a response from police who were usually travelling from Melton.
“I know they say they’re on patrol, but they are coming from Melton. “Some of my friends feel really unsafe ... some people are even buying cameras to install at home.” Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said she had been overwhelmed by how many people had already signed the petition. “The committee is even stronger now ... over the summer months everyone came back with lots of stories of crimes that have left them feeling unsafe,” Ms Hutchins said. “The committee is really fired up, all they’re after is a quick response from police.”

Kids roll out in top gear STUDENTS across Melton are being encouraged to don their runners, hop on their bike and be a part of this year’s National Ride2School Day on Wednesday, 19 March. Mayor Bob Turner said that riding, walking, scooting or skating to and from school were all great ways for children to get fit and healthy, and contribute to the 60 minutes of daily recommended physical
activity for students. “Council is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community and council’s road safety officer works closely with schools and the community to create safe ways for children to ride or walk to school,” Cr Turner said. “Many of these kids are being driven relatively short distances to school, trips that could easily be taken by bike or on foot, and they are missing

MELTON Police Inspector Stephen Mutton has sent out a strong message to parents that it is never right to leave children locked in cars. The message comes in the wake of Ambulance Victoria statistics which reveal many parents across the state are ignoring the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars. Although summer is over, Insp Mutton warns people not to be complacent. “We’re finding it is happening around shopping centres quite a bit,” he told Star. “The car can heat up within minutes and more people than ever are ringing Triple-zero.” Between September 2013 and January 2014 paramedics were called out to 23 incidents of people locked in cars across the municipality. Melton recorded the most reports with six, while Melton West recorded five and Caroline Springs followed closely with four. Across Victoria there were a total of 620 cases of people locked in cars - of those, 99 people needed treatment by paramedics, with 24 taken to hospital. Almost two-thirds of the 620 triple-zero calls reporting someone locked in a car involved a child aged under 13. Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond said it did not have to be a scorching hot day for a car to quickly heat up. “Some people think they can just duck into the shop and leave their child but there’s a risk they will be delayed and it’s a risk that’s not worth taking,” Mr Drummond said.

String of offences By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A 34-YEAR-OLD male Caroline Springs man has been arrested by police in relation to burglary, theft and theft of motor vehicle on 3 March. The offender was disturbed by the owners of the property at which time he produced a knife. He fled the premises in the victims’ motor vehicle and stole a laptop computer, mobile phone and camera. He was later arrested by police in Caroline
Springs and remanded in custody. He will re-appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 1 April. An aggravated burglary occurred at an address in Burnside Heights in the early hours of 2 March. The male offender approached the victim while he was parking his vehicle in his garage and threatened him with a knife. The male stole a 2012 BMW black sedan, valued at approximately $200,000. The offender was
described as being unshaven, wearing a blue hooded top, of medium height and build. On Wednesday, 5 March, a residential property in Taylors Hill was broken into and a television, jewellery, DVD player and laptop computer were stolen. An attempted burglary also took place on this date at an address in Burnside Heights. Meanwhile a vehicle was targeted at a childcare centre in Hillside and a handbag containing a wallet and cash was stolen. A window was
smashed to gain access to the items. Police are again urging people not to leave valuables on display in vehicles and keep their vehicles locked at all times. And a 20-year-old female was assaulted while walking home at about 10pm on 5 March. The victim was walking along Bulmans Rd in Melton West when she was approached by a male who had gotten out of a car and grabbed her by the hair. The offender punched the victim to the face then got back to his car and left.
Residents fight landfill By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON and Brimbank residents are making their opposition to a proposed expansion of Boral’s landfill operation heard - loud and clear. At last week’s meeting, Melton City Council revealed it had already received over 1700 objections in the past two weeks, with the number expected to grow rapidly. The council’s planning and environment manager Bob Baggio said it appeared this was the largest number of objections ever for a single planning application within the City of Melton. In November last year Boral lodged a planning amendment with Melton City Council to dramatically increase the size of the existing tip in Ravenhall to 179 million cubic metres, or the equivalent of 105 times the size of the MCG. Planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said councillors were expected be briefed on the application within the next three weeks, however he doubted the application would come before the council in April. Meanwhile, the future of the burnt-down Diggers Rest Hotel remains in doubt. At last Tuesday’s meeting an application to demolish the derelict hotel was on the agenda, with a recommendation to reject the application. However councillors unanimously decided to defer the application for no longer than three months, to hold ongoing discussions with the hotel owner.

Taste of harmony and cultural diversity By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THE Melton community will come together and celebrate the area’s growing cultural diversity as part of Harmony Day later this month. Melton City Council will mark Harmony Day on Saturday, 22 March, with a community event promoting awareness, acceptance and appreciation of multiculturalism. The celebration will include free
multicultural food, music, dancing, African drumming workshops, henna tattoos, a magician, kinder gym and community service stalls. Mayor Bob Turner invited the community to join in the festivities and said events like this were a wonderful opportunity for residents to gain a greater understanding of the different backgrounds that make up the area’s vibrant and diverse community. The event will be held between
11.30am and 1.30pm outside the Caroline Springs Civic Centre and Library. “With 27.8 per cent of our residents born overseas, celebrations such as this help enrich our community by giving us the opportunity to learn about different customs and cultural traditions,” Cr Turner said. Between 2006 and 2011, the number of Melton residents born overseas increased by 11,138 or 58.1 per cent, and the number of
people from a non-English speaking background increased by 9526 or 64.7 per cent. Other events taking place throughout Cultural Diversity Week include the launch of an intercultural book collection, multicultural art exhibition launch, Polish bilingual story time and the launch of the Melton Interfaith Network and Cultural Evening. A MELTON environmental group has welcomed a grant which will see work along Arnolds Creek continue to improve. Melton Environment Group and the Lifestyle Communities Brookfield Residents Group were recently granted funding of almost $10,000 by Melbourne Water under the River Health Incentives Program, for environmental work along Arnolds Creek, as part of the Arnolds Creek Biolink Project Daryl Akers, president of the Melton Environment Group, said the groups would use the funding to buy new planting equipment and safety equipment for planting and maintenance and new plants. Mr Akers said the grant would also cover administration costs, such as incorporation fees, public liability, and website maintenance. “Arnolds Creek flows for most of its course through Melton. It is therefore of high importance as a wildlife corridor through our rapidly developing urban region. Such a corridor is especially important to migratory birds. We must protect these wildlife corridors through Melton, by restoring the natural vegetation of our local creeks,” he said.

The house that kids built By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A PLUMPTON house will go under the hammer next month, all in the name of a worthy cause. Henley and Villawood have joined hands again this year to do it for the kids and auction a built house and land package on Good Friday, with all proceeds raised going to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The double-storey home is located in the Aspire estate and boasts four bedrooms, an entertainer’s kitchen, seven-star energy rating and landscaped surrounds including an outdoor alfresco area.
This is the first time since 2008 that the Children’s Hospital House has been located in the City of Melton, with the home going to auction with no reserve on Good Friday, 18 April. Last year’s auction raised $480,000 for the Good Friday Appeal, bringing the total amount donated since the initiative’s inception 21 years ago to a whopping $11.3 million. Each year hundreds of tradespeople and suppliers donate their time and equipment to build the home and make each auction possible. Mayor Bob Turner said the municipality was delighted to
host the auction in the area for the first time in six years. “Very few charities touch our hearts more than The Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal,” Cr Turner said. “Melton City Council is thrilled that our community can support this outstanding initiative by once again hosting the Children’s Hospital House auction.” The Good Friday appeal has raised $258 million since it first began in 1931 and is the largest fund-raiser for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Doing wonders with cooking pears AUSTRALIAN pear growers, restaurants, cafés and cooking schools will unite to teach home cooks how to use cooking pears with Australian Pear Month, and the start of the pears season this month. Pear grower and managing director of Kalafatis Fresh Farm in Shepparton, Jimmy Kalafatis says Australian families have lost the art of canning and preserving. “These pears remind us of years gone by when Australian families knew how to make the most of fresh fruit when it was in season. This year, restaurants, cafés and cooking schools will be reminding us how to cook with fresh pears. “We want to encourage people to enjoy pears right from the beginning of the season in March to ensure none of the tasty crop is wasted,” Mr Kalafatis said. “We are asking restaurants, cafés and cooking schools to support the Australian pear industry by putting pears on their menus, so diners everywhere can enjoy this delicious fruit while it’s in season.” Now in its third year, Australian Pear Month celebrates the start of the season and its competition has seen hundreds of restaurants and cooking schools include pear creations on their menus and vie for a prestigious title of Australian Pear Month

Sport Jets’ top gun By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing junior Liam McMahon will captain the Western Jets in the TAC Cup - which begins Saturday week. The Jets last week confirmed their 52-man squad for the 2014 season along with a leadership group that includes McMahon, Liam Duggan, Jayden Laverde, Mark Orr, Lachlan Knight and Braden Ferrari. New skipper McMahon, 17, told Star the captaincy is an honour that could have gone to anyone in the leadership group. “All of them were definitely worthy of the captaincy, so I’m lucky to have such a great group of guys in the leadership group,” McMahon said. “They’re all very driven, they all know where we want to go as a club and they’ll be fantastic support on and off the field throughout the season.” McMahon, who over the summer has overcome groin troubles to be ready for round one, said he hopes to be able to set the standard both on and off the field as the club’s new captain. “Obviously it’s a great honour to lead the club, and I get

McMahon said he has already developed a good rapport with his coach, and is looking forward to working with him as an on-field messenger throughout the year. “Torin and I have had a pretty good relationship,” he said. “I think we know where each other stand and I have to basically be his right hand man out on the ground. “So I’ve just got to make sure that if anything is going on, I need to be on top of it and I need to be able to relay (Baker’s) message whereever I am on the ground.” The Jets will take on the neighbouring Calder Cannons at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve in the opening round of the new season.
