Yunuen Perez has spent the past month collecting and shaping doilies, which she will use to create a two-metre sculpture. “I think they (doilies) have a really strong connection with women, and one of the things that I really like about these small pieces of fabric is that they have a lot of history,” Ms Perez said. Red Man warning FOOTSCRAY Police are calling on pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists to take more care on City of Maribyrnong roads. More than 76 pedestrians have been nabbed for crossing against a red signal, and 120 more warned for crossing when the red signal is flashing during a series of police operations being run as part of Operation Red Man. The five-month road safety operation, which is being funded by the Transport Accident Commission, is targeting the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists after a 30 per cent

spike in serious injury collisions across the municipality. Operation Red Man will include a series of covert and overt operations run by uniform and plain clothes police officers that will focus on drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists doing the wrong thing on the road. Footscray Police Inspector Tony Long said police were disappointed by how many pedestrians continued to flout basic road rules. “The number of collisions we’re having, and the seriousness of these collisions are unfortunately increasing,” Insp Long said.

“As I’ve said in the past, the numbers of people who are being injured in these collisions are increasingly vulnerable road users, and it’s really something that we’re trying to focus on. “We’re trying to educate people about just how dangerous it is, and we talk to people about walking around with their headphones in and stuff - because you can’t hear a car coming, or a toot of the horn - but it just doesn’t seem to be having the effect. “We’ve predominantly focused on the pedestrians at this stage, but we’ll be looking at cyclist behaviour and driver behaviour around cyclists along Whitehall St next.”

Insp Long said the dedicated bike lanes along Whitehall St were particularly dangerous for cyclists, with many cars not giving way to bike riders, but added that police had also caught many cyclists riding without helmets and disobeying signs. “There’s a few issues which we’ve spoken to the council about where there’s big, tall buildings right up to the footpath and cars come out of the side street and bang, straight into the cyclist because they haven’t got any vision until they drive out.” Operation Red Man will run until May.

THE State Government has announced plans to sell the Port of Melbourne. The Napthine Government last week announced plans to start the sales process within months to fund Government projects, including the new Port of Hastings development. “The Coalition Government is carefully considering the future of Victoria’s port assets to ensure they deliver the best return to Victorian taxpayers,” Mr O’Brien said. “We must consider all the complexities relating to the future growth, demand, management and ownership of Victoria’s ports. We also believe there is a real potential to lever-

age commercial interest in Victoria’s ports to generate significant opportunities to fund new infrastructure. “Any decision our government makes on the future of our ports network will be carefully considered, factually based, and will be in the best interests of supporting the state’s continued growth.” The move comes four months after Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews first announced plans to sell the Port of Melbourne if the Labor Party were elected to Government in the 2014 election. Mr Andrews told Star the Labor Party would sell the Port of Melbourne to fund his Project 10,000 initiatives, which include the West Gate Distribu-

tor, more lanes on the West Gate Freeway and removing the state’s 50 worst level crossings. “It’s no good if we keep getting voted the world’s most liveable city but we don’t have a world-class public transport system - that doesn’t make sense,” he said. But Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said selling off the Port of Melbourne was a bad idea. “The Port of Melbourne returned $175 million in dividends to Victorians over the last five years,” Mr Barber said. “That’s on net assets of around $1.5 billion. Selling the Port isn’t free money; we lose the stream of income we’ve been getting.”

Call to reinstate TAFE funding GREENS MLC Colleen Hartland has called on the State Government to reinstate TAFE funding cuts across the West. Ms Hartland last week launched the Rescue TAFE in the West report, which found the State Government’s $300 million budget cuts had a disproportionate effect on TAFE students across the West when Victoria University had to absorb a $40 million funding cut. The report found VU dealt

with the blow by charging higher fees, scrapping courses and staff, eliminating reduced fees or low income students and cutting essential student services. Ms Hartland said the funding should be reinstated to provide re-skilling opportunities to the thousands of manufacturing workers across the West that were set to lose their jobs. “It is heartless and wrongheaded to cut $40 million per annum from Victoria University

when there is such great need for quality re-skilling opportunities in the West. This is the equal highest cut to any TAFE in Victoria,” she said. “The academic year is beginning and we know that many people are missing out on TAFE education opportunities as a result of the government’s cuts. “Investing in TAFE in the Western Suburbs is essential for people to move into skilled employment.”

HOW good is your home and mobile internet coverage? The Federal Government has launched a website where Australians can see how their neighbourhood rates in terms of internet connectivity - and the City of Maribyrnong fares well. The MyBroadband site identifies Australia’s broadband hotspots and blackspots by giving each area a scorecard for home and mobile broadband. The website gives Hyde St in Footscray a B for overall fixed broadband availability, which means between 60 to 80 per cent of premises within that distribution area have access to at least one fixed broadband technology. West Footscray’s Barkly St and Queensville St in Kingsville also scored a B, while Norfolk St in Maidstone and Somerville Rd, Yarraville, were marked A - which means 80 to 100 per cent of premises have access. The new website coincides with the release of the Broadband Availability and Quality Report, which reveals there are up to 1.6 million premises throughout Australia which have either no broadband or very poor broadband connectivity, with peak median download speeds of less than 4.8 megabits per second. In general, states or territories with either a higher population density or more urbanised population were found to have a greater level of access to broadband services. The report is the first of its kind to be undertaken by an Australian Government, with data drawn from all major Australian telecommunication carriers. The Federal Government has passed on the information to NBN Co, who will use the rankings to prioritise poorly served areas in the NBN rollout.

A MAJOR genetics study aims to uncover why people get different results from the same workout. Victoria University researcher Dr Nir Eynon said genetic variation was part of the reason not everyone got the same results from exercise, but the extent to which various genes were responsible was only now being understood. “For the first time on a large scale this study will explain why you can have two people at the same base fitness, eating the same foods and doing the same workout three times a week, but one increases their oxygen capacity by 30 per cent and loses two kilograms while the other increases their oxygen capacity by just five per cent and doesn’t lose any weight,” Dr Eynon said. Researchers are now looking for 18 to 40 year old men to participate in a four week high intensity exercise program to see how they respond. More cops hit the beat By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY Police has boosted the numbers of its two foot patrol crews - and even more officers could be on the way. Inspector Tony Long told Star another four police officers had been added to the two units in Footscray’s CBD and Highpoint Shopping Centre from last week, meaning there will be three sergeants and seven constables across the crews. “We’ve been very happy with

the work our crew in the CBD and Highpoint have been doing, and we’ve got an application in for some further staffing, which will see a fairly significant boost in numbers,” he said. “It’s been really terrific for public perceptions of safety as well, because they see the police out and about. It’s really having a good effect for us.” Insp Long said the added numbers would help deal with rising

assault numbers across the municipality. Footscray Police first trialled a foot patrol crew at Footscray’s CBD towards the end of 2012 to increase a visible police presence to deter crime and increase public perceptions of safety. The team also worked closely with local traders to address identified public order issues and engage with local shoppers. The crew was so productive it detected more than 375 offences,

including 255 for public drinking, nine for being drunk in a public place and seven for possession of a controlled weapon - and soon became a permanent feature on Footscray streets. A second foot patrol crew was then set up at Highpoint Shopping Centre in mid-2013. Both crews are used in conjunction with CCTV cameras in both areas to reduce crime and catch offenders more effectively when a crime occurs.

Kids still at risk in heat AMBULANCE Victoria paramedics are disappointed many parents are ignoring the dangers of leaving children unattended in cars. Paramedics were called to 620 cases of people locked in cars between September 2013 and January 2014, with almost two thirds of all calls involving a child under the age of 13. Of those 99 people needed treatment by paramedics, with 24 taken to hospital. Six of those incidents came from the City of Maribyrnong area, with one call out each in Footscray, Seddon, Kingsville, Yarraville, Braybrook and Maribyrnong. Although summer is over, Ambulance Victoria group manager Brett Drummond has warned people not to be complacent. “It doesn’t have to be a scorching hot day for the car to quickly heat up,” Mr Drummond said. “Tests by Ambulance Victoria found that even on a 29 degree day the inside of a car can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and hit 60 degrees within 20 minutes. “There’s been a lot of media coverage and advertising over summer warning about the dangers of leaving children in cars so it’s disappointing that we’ve had more than 600 calls to people locked in a car in the last five months.” Mr Drummond said accidents where keys were locked in the car with a child were common, while other cases were deliberate acts. “Some people think they can just duck into the shop and leave their child but there’s a risk they will be delayed and it’s a risk that’s not worth taking,” he said.

The Yarraville father of two not only had to contend with his own loss, but that of five-year-old daughter Summer and nine-year-old Hunter, and the new challenges of becoming a single dad. “We were working our way through the grieving process ... and I was looking for a resource that was

going to help my kids and everything that I found or read was very technical or instructional, there really wasn’t anything that addressed the emotional side of things,” Mr Millard said. “There was nothing I could sit and read with my kids, like a storybook.” Enter fellow Yarraville mum Aly Walsh, an author and publisher with a knack for helping people to express themselves. Using Ms Walsh’s book When You Left as a springboard, Mr Mil-

lard wrote his own children’s book that can be personalised to keep treasured family members alive in an accessible way. I Love You Now Until Forever is a scrapbook-type book with touching and positive messages to help children remember how much their loved one cared for them. Each page also features a frame that can be filled with the reader’s own photographs. Mr Millard said his kids, who each have their own book, cherished the momento.

“The whole concept is a book, for the main part, of frames where you can put your own photos in to personalise it so that when you read it, it becomes something that’s different for every child,” he said. “For me, creating this has been a real cathartic process. I’m actually really chuffed at the way it’s turned out. “I think about my wife every day, I miss her every day, but at the same time, I see her in my two kids every day, so it’s not all bad news.”

Ms Roxon’s primary role will be chairwoman of the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre advisory board, working closely with the centre’s director and the dean of the College of Law and Justice. First elected to the Federal seat of Gellibrand in 1998, Ms Roxon was a senior Cabinet minister and was Minister for Health and Ageing for four years. Jadida with a difference By CHARLENE MACAULAY MIDDLE-EASTERN band Jadida will deliver a show with a difference this weekend when the group takes to the stage at Yarraville’s Kindred Studios. Jadida is starting off the show with a modern belly dancing class for all levels, led by Josie Palermo, before jumping in and playing their own set. The group started out more than 13 years ago as a duo between Paul Holleman and Phil Gunter, and slowly expanded to become a six-piece band that paid homage to the myriad cultures of the global music scene.

In 2000 they released their debut CD titled Gypsies in an Urban Desert, followed by a second CD called World Confusion. The group slowed down to start their own families before getting back on stage a couple of years ago.They are currently busy working on some new recordings, which they plan to release in June. “There’s a whole bunch of different influences - Latin America, Spanish, Hindi - so we play around with lots of cultural influences and we like to mould them together in a co-

herent sound,” vocalist Beulah Joseph said. “We’re good friends and we genuinely really enjoy one another’s company. “We’re all very like-minded musicians and we’re very passionate about music. “For us, it’s a statement of being able to live with lots of different people - we don’t have to have Australia with one sort of people, we have such a wonderful mix of different cultures here and let’s celebrate that.” Jadida will perform at Kindred Studios this Saturday from 7pm.

Clubbers nail it By ADEM SARICAOGLU YARRAVILLE Club has come from the clouds to get itself back where it belongs in Turf Cricket’s Senior Division grand final. The Clubbers barely managed to sneak into the final four and coming into their semi-final clash away to competition frontrunner Greenvale, many felt more luck needed to come their way. Greenvale had only lost one match for the entire summer coming into the weekend and rightly went in as a favourite. However, Yarraville Club again proved why it has been Turf Cricket’s most successful club of recent memory, managing to get on top with both bat and ball to claim an emphatic four-wicket win on Sunday. Captain-coach Emmett Bronca, who on Saturday helped set up the win on day one with five scalps on the soft Section Road wicket, said there was never any doubt within the club’s inner sanctum that a win was possible against the might of Greenvale. “It’s absolutely amazing,” Bronca said in the aftermath on Sunday. “We always said all we needed was an opportunity and we’ve come out here and done what we do well, which is all the little things and come together as a team. “Everyone stood up when given their opportunity in whichever aspect of the game

they were required.” With the ball on day one, Adam Contessa and Richard Sherlock were standout bowlers alongside Bronca, as Greenvale stumbled to an all-out 139 in 69 overs. But it was the 65-run partnership struck up between Justin Baker (68 not out) and Michael O’Keefe (38 not out) in Yarraville Club’s successful run chase that ultimately put the Clubbers into the decider. “Not only is he in form but he went about it with just true grit and determination,” Bronca said of his predecessor, Baker. “(Jeremy) Brown bowled extremely well and ‘Bakes’ copped a few in the arm and in the leg and in the chest, but he stuck it out and was well supported by O’Keefe.” South Caulfield is the team now standing in the way of yet another Senior Division flag for the Clubbers. The four-day match will be decided over the next fortnight, and while Yarraville Club did go down to South Caulfield in round two, Bronca’s confidence and belief in his team remains very strong. “We always seem to step up to the big occasions and big chances - so if we back ourselves and do everything right and play together as a unit, well, we can only hope for the best,” he said.

The A Grade race was dominated by a twoman breakaway from the middle of the race, with 42-year-old Ascot Vale resident Miles DaCosta taking a strong win in what has been a stellar season for the A Grade breakaway specialist. DaCosta knew he was going to try for the break, but the trick was who to take up the road. “It started off a little reserved, with people shutting down every break,” he said. “When the bunch brought back Trevor Hutchings’ break, I attacked on the hill and put it into the gutter. I saw Ben O’Leary coming so I waited until he got to me and then we just pulled turns all the way ’til the end. “Every time the bunch surged, we put in a couple of hard turns to answer theirs. You cannot ask for a better guy to be in a break with. Ben just worked hard and at the end we had an unspoken gentlemen’s agreement.” DaCosta took the win from O’Leary, with Travis Small holding off the bunch after attacking with three to go to stay clear for third place.

FOOTSCRAY Cycling Club’s B Grade race was an evenly matched affair, with riders throwing in a multitude of attacks, but each and every attack was shut down almost before they could form by the hard-chasing bunch. But a lack of motivation and foxing saw 41-year-old Newport resident Antonio Marino escape the bunch and take the win, at one time having a lead of three-quarters of a lap. “My legs were feeling a bit sore this week, I didn’t think I would go too well today,” he said. “But, I fired up. When I went I didn’t think I would be allowed to stay away, so I was a little surprised to see my lead. Then I just got into my rhythm and just kept moving along and keeping an eye on the gap and once it started to get to three quarters of a lap I was confident I could keep it going ’til the end.” Marino finished well clear of the bunch, which pretty much gave up and just jockeyed for the sprint for the last 15 minutes. Brunswick CC’s Tim Feltham took out the bunch sprint and second, closely followed by Arron Liley. WOULD-BE volleyball stars will be given the opportunity to play with the best when the Western Region Volleyball Competition launches its first social adult competition on March 14 with free try out sessions. Competition general manager Mike Dolan said the junior competition had been a major success since it began eight years ago. Last year, 32 teams took part in the competition while several players went on to represent Australia overseas. This year the indoor volleyball competition will include a social adult category, with free try out sessions and cash prizes offered for the best teams. Dolan said the competition is a great opportunity for adults interested in the game to utilise the competition’s world-class knowledge and facilities at the state-of-the-art Maribyrnong Sports Academy and Whitten Oval in Footscray. “Many of our current Junior League players have progressed to playing in the Senior Victorian State League, and are Victorian and National representatives. Other former players have been offered volleyball scholarships with a US university,” Dolan said. The mixed, social adult competition will officially begin on Friday 2 May, with the come and try sessions held in March to include instruction in basic skills. The sessions are on Friday 14 March, from 6pm to 7.30pm and Friday 28 March, from 5pm to 6.30pm at Maribyrnong College.

Jets’ new top gun By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing junior Liam McMahon will captain the Western Jets in the TAC Cup - which begins Saturday week. The Jets last week confirmed their 52-man squad for the 2014 season along with a leadership group that includes McMahon, Liam Duggan, Jayden Laverde, Mark Orr, Lachlan Knight and Braden Ferrari. New skipper McMahon, 17, told Star the captaincy is an honour that could have gone to anyone in the leadership group. “All of them were definitely worthy of the captaincy, so I’m lucky to have such a great group of guys in the leadership group,” McMahon said. “They’re all very driven, they all know where we want to go as a club and they’ll be fantastic support on and off the field throughout the season.” McMahon, who over the summer has overcome groin troubles to be ready for round one, said he hopes to be able to set the standard both on and off the field as the club’s new captain. “Obviously it’s a great honour to lead the club, and I get the opportunity to lead a great bunch of young blokes,” McMahon said. “It’s a big season ahead which hopefully can bring finals and success with a few blokes drafted. “I just want to lead by example on the field, make sure I’m putting together some good, solid performances out there and developing my own game to help the players out on the ground. “I also just want to be there as a role model both on and off the field and be really professional with the way I go about things.” Former Werribee Tiger and Spotswood premiership player Torin Baker is entering into his second year as senior coach after leading the Jets to last year’s finals series. McMahon said he has already developed a good rapport with his coach, and is looking forward to working with him as an on-field messenger throughout the year. “Torin and I have had a pretty good relationship,” he said. “I think we know where each other stand and I have to basically be his right hand man out on the ground. “So I’ve just got to make sure that if anything is going on, I need to be on top of it and I need to be able to relay (Baker’s) message wherever I am on the ground.” The Jets will take on the neighbouring Calder Cannons at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve in the opening round of the new season.

Cox moving to water polo apex By LIAM TWOMEY IT IS hard to see Alex Cox ending up anywhere but the top. At just 16 years old, Cox is mixing it up with some of the top water polo athletes from around the state as she establishes herself as a rising star in the sport. The Maribyrnong resident made her first state team three years ago and since then, has also been selected for the Victorian under 14 and under 16 sides. However, it is not just in the juniors where Cox is turning heads. She also plays in the National Women’s League open age team with the Victorian Tigers. Although the jump from junior to senior competition is tough, Cox wouldn’t have it any other way. “It is very hard because I came from being the number one in the team in juniors and then coming into open women’s competition where I am not even in the starting line-up,” she explained. “It is really good though. It has helped me improve, and I really

know when I am improving. “At first I was really scared. The coaching is very different to juniors where they are more like, well done and keep going. “In seniors, if you stuff up, it feels like the end of the world. I just take it all on and try and do as best as I can.” There has been no shortage of awards throughout her young career, with Cox dominating the Water Polo Victoria competition last year. She was named the top goal scorer and most valuable player in the junior women’s division as well as taking out the highest goal scorer award and tying for the MVP in State League One. There are no plans to slow down for Cox, who is hoping to go as far as she can in the sport. “I’m trying to make the Australian Squad that would be excellent,” she said. “I would love to go to an Olympics one day. For all the effort that I am putting in, it would be great to be able to make an Olympic side and play there.”

WHEN launching any new sporting venture, it is important to get the right people involved. And for the team at Play Badminton, they don’t come much better than Ben and Erin Walklate. The husband-and-wife pair are both badminton coaches at elite sports school Maribyrnong College, with Ben having spent eight years of his career in the Australian National Badminton Squad while Erin represented Australia at both Olympic and Commonwealth Games level. Now, they are hoping to get the community of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs involved in the sport. Using the state-of-the-art Maribyrnong College facilities, players will be able to hire courts outside of school hours. “We saw an opportunity to open up the facilities and give the community the chance to come in and use the courts,” Erin explained. “We would like to see everyone play. We are definitely keen to get some people through the doors who have played before. “Also, we are really hopeful to get some different people in the community who maybe haven’t played the game before. There might be some younger people who maybe don’t have a sport yet or who want to get a bit active.” As well as court hire, players can also sign up for coaching services out of the Maribyrnong base. With numbers expected to grow in the future, Erin said she would also look at social competitions and tournaments. As the Commonwealth Games approach, Maribyrnong will be hosting its own lead-up event, the Victor Maribyrnong International Series. The tournament will attract some of the best players from around the world. “That is an international series event run by Badminton Australia,” Erin said. “That will actually pull some players from overseas, possibly New Zealand and countries throughout Asia as well as some of the best players in Australia will be coming to play here. “It will be a really good time for us, and I think for everyone in the community to see some good badminton. Tigers ready to go all the way CRICKET finals are in full swing and Werribee Cricket Club has all four senior teams in, which is a credit to president Ivo Havard and the hard workers around the club. The first XI have lost the last two games very narrowly and will be hoping that is just a hiccup now the real stuff starts. They did finish on top of the ladder but only by percentage in the end. They will be looking for big finals performances from their stars Tim O’Brien (487 runs at an average of 60) Matt Dean (485 at 37) and with the ball Heath Pritchard (41 wickets at 9.41) Jono Burton (23 at 16.74). The finals are on this Saturday - the first X1 are at Avalon Airport Oval, the seconds at Soldiers Reserve, thirds at Ivanhoe Park and the fourths at Crispe Park, Reservoir. Yarraville Club Cricket Club which snuck into the VTCA finals has made it through to the grand final beating top team Greenvale. Emmett Bronca starred taking 5/39 and he was backed up by Adam Contessa 3/32. Chasing a modest 140 to win they were in trouble early at 4/25 then 6 /75 but veteran opener Justin Baker carried his bat for 68 not out and Michael O’Keefe 38 not out got them home by four wickets. They will meet South Caulfield in the grand final. STEVE Thom, the chairman of selectors, tells me the WRFL interleague squad has been really burning up the track during the couple of sessions they have had so far. While some players are yet to commit, those who have put their hand up are really putting in. I hope all WRFL clubs get behind Brett Jacobs and the team when they take on the Southern Football League on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park at 11.15am. It would be great to see players, officials and supporters of all WRFL clubs at the ground to cheer on the boys from the West. I hope this competition can grow in the future and that players have the same desire to wear the WRFL jumper as an adult that you have when you are under age. IN other local footy news Deer Park has snared another former AFL player with Ryan Houlihan signing for the Lions for 2014. Some other interesting clearances see Altona losing Travis Lunardi, Joel Magnabosco, Steve Kennedy, Richard Knight and Anthony Chiu. Spotswood gain Sablich, and Dumbleton but lose Elliot Wood and Ben Perry plus the irreplaceable Chris O’Keefe and Lachlan McGhie, who I hear has retired. The Lampi brothers are on the move - Jessi to Yarraville Seddon Eagles and Jordan to Sunshine Heights. Troy Kelm is returning to Albion and the Stephens brothers, Sam and James, have moved yet again this time to St Albans. More news on clearances in the coming weeks. YARRAVILLE Glory will be hoping a recent stretch of tough luck has run its course with the new Football Federation Victoria season just around the corner. The Glory ended the 2013 State League Three North-West season fifth on the table after winning four of its last six games. However coach Charlie Egan insists his side was better than what the final table suggested, telling Star injuries and unexpected departures threw Yarraville’s 2013 campaign off track. “I think we had one of the best players in the competition in George Papadopoulos,” Egan said. “He would’ve been a superstar in our league last year, and he had a leg break halfway into the first game of the season. “I had the top goalkeeper, and again, on the week of the season a first division club came in and he wanted to move higher, so I lost him, and then pretty much just everything seemed to go wrong. “So all of a sudden we went from a strong side to very much depleted, but in the second half of the season we finally started to get bodies back.” Egan is now hopeful his squad can take a little bit of confidence into the newly revamped North-West SL2 competition, with goalkeeper Mark Wilson, attacker John Little and youngster Darcey Den Ouden all poised for a big year ahead. The coach believes Wilson is the best keeper in the division, while Little and Den Ouden will be the key players to look out for further up the pitch.
