A BRIMBANK mortgage broker has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to a scam which obtained home loans totalling more than $9 million. The Supreme Court has heard Kieu Thi Huynh, who also pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to obtain a financial advantage by deception, was the owner of a business called St Andrews Mortgage Solutions in St Albans and Sunshine. Between November 2007 and Feb-
ruary 2013, financial institutions approved home loans using fraudulent information and falsified documents which St Andrews Mortgage Solutions supplied on behalf of clients. ‘Operation Squid’ uncovered the deception by cross-referencing home loan applications with documents from the Australian Tax Office, Centrelink and financial institutions. Supreme Court Justice John Dixon said Ms Huynh, 44, used a financial calculating program to establish the minimum wages required for monthly

TEENAGER Praise knows there are many talented young people in Brimbank. The 17-year-old belongs to the Brimbank Youth Services B-Breaks Dance Crew, which rehearses every week at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine and performs at community events. Praise has been a member of the crew for two years and enjoys the creativity which comes with dancing. “When I’m upset I dance, as a way to express myself,” she said. Praise said although some young people could be nervous about performing in public,
they should not be. “It’s just that they’re afraid to show it, but some are a bit shy or their parents want them to focus on school,” she said. Artistic teenagers and young adults from an African background will be given a chance to showcase their artistic abilities in an upcoming event at the Visy Cares Hub when auditions for Africa’s Got Talent will be staged on Saturday 15 March. Singers, dancers, rappers, instrumentalists and comedians aged between 16 and 30 can enter the contest. Entrants from across the state will be whittled down to a top 10 who will go on to per-
form in the Victorian finals at Fitzroy Town Hall on 24 May. The judges at this year’s event will be singer Deni Hines, dancer and drummer Lamine Sonko, artist and composer Stephanie Kabanyan and Triple R presenter Chris Gill. The auditions, supported by Brimbank City Council, will be held from noon to 5pm on Saturday 15 March at the Visy Cares Hub (near Village Cinemas), 80B Harvester Rd, Sunshine. Contact Charlotte Hilder on 9249 4139, email africasgottalent@gmail.com or see the Africa’s Got Talent Facebook page for more information.
HOMICIDE detectives have launched an investigation into the death of a baby found near a footpath in St Albans last Thursday. Police were called to Ruth St about 3pm where the newborn infant’s body was located by authorities, after they were contacted by a family member. Police who attended the scene discovered the baby’s body concealed under a tree close to the pavement. As Star went to press, the exact details surrounding the baby’s death were yet to be determined. “Inquiries are continuing into how long the deceased child may have been there and the circumstances under which it was placed there,” a statement from Victoria Police said. An 18-year-old St Albans woman has been interviewed by police and released pending further inquiries. Police said they were “not looking for anyone else suspected of being involved”. Police remained at Ruth St for several hours but as of Friday morning, had not yet released information concerning the baby’s exact age or gender to the pubic. A post-mortem was also carried out on the baby’s body. Investigators said they were keen to hear from anyone who witnessed unusual activity in the Ruth St area over the past week. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sunshine dozen cop racism penalty By ALESHA CAPONE TWELVE police officers will face disciplinary action after an investigation into racist stubby holders were produced by officers at the Sunshine Police Station. Last week, Victoria Police announced three employees had lodged appeals with the Police Review Services Board after being dismissed as a result of the investigation. Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said the dismissed trio included a Sunshine sergeant, who has been charged with disgraceful conduct
relating to the production of the stubby holders. The investigation was launched last year when some officers at Sunshine Police Station were found to be producing and using stubby holders with a picture of a mudfish and text which said: “Sunshine police. Whoever says Sunshine brings happiness has never worked here”. ‘Mudfish’ is derogatory slang used to describe people of an African background. Mr Lay said two constables had also been sacked after being charged with improper conduct relating to an inappropriate photo.
“This photo depicted an African male in a vulnerable position and in my opinion, was unforgiveable,” Mr Lay said. Three Sunshine sergeants have been transferred to alternative workplaces and will have to complete a human rights training course. They have been charged with careless discharge of duty and bringing the force into disrepute. “They had failed to take decisive action in relation to the stubby holder production when they became aware of it,” Mr Lay said. Six officers who Mr Lay described as being “on the very peripheral of the stubby holder issue”
have received admonishments. Mr Lay said all these officers have been “very remorseful”. He said a police officer involved in the stubby scandal is yet to have their case heard. “Our actions show that we don’t believe this type of behaviour is appropriate for any serving Victoria Police member,” Mr Lay said. “I know that the vast majority of Victoria Police members, including those at Sunshine police station and within the Brimbank PSA, are dedicated, professional, hard-working police committed to keeping their communities safe.”
Fake note on the money By ALESHA CAPONE A PENSIONER has warned other residents in Melton and Brimbank to be wary of counterfeit banknotes. Mary Diele said she recently received a fake $50 note from a cashier at a Caroline Springs grocery store. Ms Diele said she did not realise the money was not genuine until she took it to the bank to pay a bill, where the cashier tore the false currency up. “The lady in the bank wouldn’t let me have it back after she ripped it up,” Ms Diele said. “I was very upset - I’m a pensioner.” Ms Diele said she was told to take her receipt back to the grocery store, but staff there said she would be unable to recoup the money without the original note. “I want to warn people so it doesn’t happen to them,” Ms Diele said. Brimbank Police Inspector Chris Gilbert said there have been a few examples of fake banknotes circulating in the past six months, mainly before Christmas. “It’s not a prevalent offence, sometimes people don’t realise they’ve received counterfeit notes and could even pass them on unwittingly,” he said. Caroline Springs Senior Sergeant Trevor King said counterfeit money did not often surface in the area. “It is something which happens sporadically and generally shopkeepers and employees at retailers are pretty good at identifying it when they come across it,” he said. “It happens occasionally and if it does, people should get in contact with us and we’ll commence an investigation.”

Mother Lisa Towers and her young daughter Abbey would like to see a family room built at Sunshine Hospital. 116057 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
Hospital help urged for kids in the wards A YOUNG patient has urged residents of the West to throw their support behind a fund-raising effort to build a family room in the Sunshine Hospital’s children’s wing. Eleven-year-old Abbey from Hoppers Crossing recently spent 10 days in the hospital undergoing a skin graft after a motorcycle accident. Her mother, Lisa Towers, said Abbey was operated on after she developed four infections. “She is alright now, but the carers there are so great I wouldn’t hesitate
to take her back to the hospital,” Ms Towers said. “You couldn’t fault the care there. The staff and nurses just gave 110 per cent. “When she goes back to school, Abbey wants the principal and the pupils to have a ‘Crazy Hair’ day to raise funds for the hospital.” In addition to Abbey’s efforts, another fund-raising event is being planned to help out with a new upgrade at Sunshine Hospital. The Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) has committed to creating a family room in the
hospital’s children’s wing. RMCH family rooms provide a place for families visiting sick children to relax and have some welldeserved fun. Western Health and RMHC will host a gala dinner at the Moonee Valley Racing Club on 28 March to raise more than $100,000 for the new facilities. “When children are at the Sunshine Hospital long-stay ward, there is not that much there for them to do,” Ms Towers said. “I spoke to one of the nurses there and said the nurses painted the
ward themselves and painted the flying pigs on the wall 10 years ago.” Abbey said she would like some touch-screens, used for playing games, installed in the family room. “At the Royal Children’s Hospital in the city they have everything and at Sunshine Hospital they only have TVs and flying pigs on the wall,” she said. The gala dinner will be on 28 March from 7pm to 11pm at the Celebrity Room, Moonee Valley Racing Club. Tickets: $150 each and are available at http://www.ticketebo. com.au/sunshinekidsgala

Ken makes waves in community LONG-TIME community crusader Ken Mooney has taken on plenty of causes in his time. In 2008, Mr Mooney was taken to court by the previous Brimbank City Council after refusing to pay a fine issued to him. The $100 fine was issued after Mr Mooney yelled out when the council decided to pull the plug on the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre project. As a member of the Brimbank Transport Action Group (BTAG), he campaigned vigorously for homeowners - who would have been forced out of their homes to make way for a road project - to get a fair price for their property. Mr Mooney also served as secretary of the Sunshine Action Group in the 1970s. Mr Mooney’s latest case concerns a leaking water main in Learmonth St, Sunshine West. The 69-year-old said that around six weeks ago, City West Water fixed the problem but afterwards water continued escaping. “It’s been running down the street all the time - not a slow leak, but a fast leak,” he said. “I rang the staff up a few days after and told them it was still leaking.” Mr Mooney said he was not blaming workers but after four weeks, he again contacted the water authority. Mr Mooney said although he received a letter from City West Water last week say the leak would be repaired the following Saturday, he was worried by the large amount of water wasted in the meantime. City West Water’s managing director Anne Barker said the delay in undertaking the repair was a result of nearby underground electrical cables requiring inspection before the works could be carried out. “These instances where repairs are delayed are regrettable but vital to ensuring that repair works don’t affect other essential services and cause further inconvenience,” she said.

To help address the problem, LeadWest has announced plans to work with social researcher Dr Ruth Morton on a project which will investigate “youth engagement in and disengagement from education and training” in the West compared to the rest of Melbourne and Victoria. LeadWest CEO Craig Row-

Figures from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations show the rate of full-time unemployment among teenagers looking for work in the West was 39 per cent in 2013. This was higher than the national average of 25 per cent.

New administrator named for Brimbank state chairman of the Timber Industry Road Evaluation Study. In 1994, Mr Tanner was awarded a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his leadership and contribution to the Benalla community during a period of flooding. His predecessor Mr Lewinsky resigned earlier this year to take up the role of monitor at Darebin City Council. Mr Watson said Mr Tanner, who is set to serve as Mr Lewinsky’s replacement until council elections return to the municipality in March next year, would put the administrators “in an even stronger position to continue to build community capacity and deliver needed capital projects”.
“Myself and fellow administrator Jane Nathan, as well as CEO Bill Jaboor and all executive and staff, are pleased to hear John will be joining us at Brimbank,” he said. “Since the administration at the council began in 2009 community sentiment and satisfaction with Brimbank Council has increased and we have maintained an ongoing commitment to making a better Brimbank. A starting date for Mr Tanner has not yet been announced. Brimbank City Council was dismissed in 2009 following after an Ombudsman’s investigation into failures of governance, but no former councillors have been charged over the report.

FRUSTRATED Taylors Hill residents plan to ramp up their calls for a 24-hour police station in Caroline Springs, after several incidents in the last three months have left them even more fearful for their safety. Led by Melton City councillor Lara Carli, the Taylors Hill Safety Committee is gaining strength in the area and is calling on police to meet them and discuss the hot topics of drugs and burglaries in the area. “The group feels more unsafe now than ever,” Cr Carli told Star. “We’re trying to keep our children safe ... but I was taken aback when I heard about the drug-related incidents and finding needles in the local playground.” Cr Carli said as the community grew, so too should the local police force.

shopping centres to gain support from the community. Ms Liron said while police might be on patrol, a resident could wait well over an hour to get a response from police who were usually travelling from Melton. “I know they say they’re on patrol, but they are coming from Melton. “Some of my friends feel really unsafe ... some people are even buying cameras to install at home.” Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins said she had been overwhelmed by how many people had already signed the petition. “The committee is even stronger now ... over the summer months everyone came back with lots of stories of crimes that have left them feeling unsafe,” Ms Hutchins said. “The committee is really fired up, all they’re after is a quick response from police.”

Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton told Star the police service area recently received an additional numbers of officers which had allowed the station to be manned on Tuesday and Thursday evening and Saturday during the day. Insp Mutton said his vision was that the police station would one day be open until 10pm on Monday to Friday and during the day on both Saturday and Sunday. Already thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the State Government to “make our community safe again by providing more police officers to be based at Caroline Springs Police Station and for the station to be open 24 hours a day and operating seven days a week.” Taylors Hill resident Olivia Liron said residents were feeling “scared” and had even begun organising stalls at local

A THIRD administrator has been appointed to Brimbank City Council following the resignation of Peter Lewinsky. Last week, the chairman of administrators John Watson welcomed John Tanner to serve in Brimbank alongside himself and Jane Nathan. On Thursday, the Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell announced Mr Tanner would join the Brimbank administrators. Mr Tanner served as the local government commissioner in the Shire of Delatite for three years in the mid-1990s. He has also served on the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, the state executive of the Australian Small Business Association and as

Pupils’ call to help gorillas YOUNGSTERS from a Brooklyn school are putting out a call to help save endangered gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Pupils from the Annunciation School will be asking their family and friends to donate old and unused mobile phones at a collection box in the school’s office. Among the students taking part in the program are nineyear-old Chiara, 10-year-old Victoria and 11 year-old-Nicholas, along with school captains Rachel and Mac.
“We went on an excursion to Melbourne Zoo and that’s when we learned the gorillas might be endangered,” Rachel said. Mac said the zookeepers told the children how a material called coltan is located underground where Congans mine to make new mobile phones. According to Greenpeace Africa, the areas where coltan is mined - such as the Kahuzi Biega National Park - are home to more than 200 animal species including the endangered eastern lowland gorilla. The demand for coltan mining has led to their forests being destroyed and made them more
vulnerable to poachers. “Because they need to mine the coltan under where the gorillas live, to make new mobiles, if we recycle the old ones they won’t need to,” Mac said. “We made it our term project because if we don’t help the gorillas they could become extinct,” Rachel said. Nicholas said he liked the gorillas at the zoo and it would be a pity if they became extinct. “We are hoping to collect as many mobiles as we can,” Chiara said. The pupils will deliver the final collection of mobile phones to Melbourne Zoo.

School cash call By ALESHA CAPONE Congratulations to all at Sunshine College
A HIGH-ACHIEVING Sunshine school deserves an urgent cash injection to upgrade its facilities, according to a Western Suburbs MP. Liberal Western Metropolitan Region MP Bernie Finn said he hoped more funding would soon be directed towards Sunshine Secondary College’s Lachlan St campus in West Sunshine. He said the State Government had given more than $80 million to upgrade and build schools in the West since being elected, but he hoped Sunshine Secondary College would receive a significant boost in the upcoming budget. While the Opposition was in power before the last election, they proposed rebuilding the college to locate all its campuses at one site, but this has never occurred.
In regard to the recently published Grattan Report which led to some very positive media attention for Sunshine College over the weekend of February 22nd I would just like to thank and congratulate all the staff for their committed work in Creating Futures for the students of Sunshine College. I would like to thank students for the pride they take in our school and in the way they wear the school uniform and importantly for their hard work at school and in study. I would like to thank the parents and guardians of our wonderful students for the support they give their children and the school. Without students, parents and teachers working together our achievements are not possible. If it was not for you, the teachers of Sunshine College, coming together in 2006 with a strong determination to make a difference in the lives of our students, then we would not have been named as one of Australia’s “Turn Around Schools.” I am sure you understand the high praise that goes with being one of only four schools in Australia and the only one in Victoria to be used as an example of what can be achieved by schools in this report. The introduction of the SunLit program and its massive impact on improving literacy levels across the school then the follow up with numeracy, where we have had many visitors both from Victoria and interstate come to see what we do and the added emphasis on strategies to improve VCE results have all contributed to our current exposure as ab exemplar school for Australia. The acknowledgement by Victorian Auditor General’s Office that our wellbeing and engagement programs were effective is another area that staff and students need to be praise and thanked for.
per cent of Years 7 to 11 students were reading at a primary school level. However the school is now ranked ahead of many independent colleges in literacy and numeracy. In addition, the Grattan report said the college was in the top 10 per cent of Victorian government secondary schools for positive student attitude. Mr Blunt said he was proud of the school’s academic record but believed students would be able to achieve even more in newer classrooms and buildings. “We’ve been getting great results in sub-standard facilities,” he said. “I’d be looking forward to getting even better ones in world-class facilities. “I’m hoping we’ll be mentioned in the next budget.”
Pupils flip out for charity
The Grattan Report focussed on the five important steps that the school has put in place namely, strong leadership throughout the school that raises expectations, effective teaching that emphasizes collaboration, measurement and development of effective engagement of parents and the community. As already mentioned, to be chosen as one of four schools in Australia and the only school in Victoria to have caused a really effective change in a school and to be featured in this report, is high praise indeed.
Again thank you,

Mr Finn said while visiting the school in 2011 he was “shocked” after seeing a sagging roof, dangerous floor coverings and cracked walls. He said despite this, the school has achieved strong academic results and helped turn around the lives of many students. “The students deserve the physical environment they can learn in and the teachers deserve the physical environment they can teach in,” Mr Finn said. “I’m not offering them false hope, but I’m going in to bat for them.” Last month, a report from the Grattan Institute highlighted Sunshine Secondary College as an example of how to “turnaround” students’ grades. The report said when principal Tim Blunt was appointed eight years ago, more than 60
MINI masterchefs from Albion North Primary School, including Rohan and Sienna, cooked up a tasty meal for a good cause last week. Volunteers, staff and students from the school took part in the annual UnitingCare Pancake Day to fundraise for programs which help homeless people. Teacher Sharna De Brincat said while Pancake Day was a time for fun, serious issues underpinned the event. “This year all money raised directly assists vital UnitingCare programs and services helping people experiencing homelessness or on the brink of financial crisis,” she said. Maths whiz wows with Pi STAY COOL THIS SUMMER By ALESHA CAPONE
SUNSHINE College student Eldiana tasted victory last week after she recited hundreds of numbers to win a unique mathematical contest at her school. The 14-year-old pupil memorised 421 numbers belonging to ‘Pi’, a symbol used to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Maths experts know Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point and continues infinitely without repetition or pattern - but most people would not know this figure by heart. However, Eldiana said she spent two days studying ‘Pi’ before she had to recite it in front of her teachers at the college’s annual Pie for Pi Day competition. Pi Day is celebrated around the world every March and those who memorise the most numbers in a Pi equation are literally rewarded with a pie for their efforts. Eldiana recited the 420 numbers in under one minute to claim her school’s Pi title. “I was confident in myself and knew I could do it,” Eldiana said. “I was happy when I finished and knew my parents would be really proud of me. “Maths is my favourite subject.” Eldiana, who hopes to become a scientist in the future, said this was her second year entering Sunshine College’s Pi competition. Last year, she listed more than 80 numbers to come in second to a fellow pupil. Eldiana – who recited Pi to

Doing wonders with cooking pears AUSTRALIAN pear growers, restaurants, cafés and cooking schools will unite to teach home cooks how to use cooking pears with Australian Pear Month, and the start of the pears season this month. Pear grower and managing director of Kalafatis Fresh Farm in Shepparton, Jimmy Kalafatis says Australian families have lost the art of canning and preserving. “These pears remind us of years gone by when Australian families knew how to make the most of fresh fruit when it was in season. This year, restaurants, cafés and cooking schools will be reminding us how to cook with fresh pears. “We want to encourage people to enjoy pears right from the beginning of the season in March to ensure none of the tasty crop is wasted,” Mr Kalafatis said. “We are asking restaurants, cafés and cooking schools to support the Australian pear industry by putting pears on their menus, so diners everywhere can enjoy this delicious fruit while it’s in season.” Now in its third year, Australian Pear Month celebrates the start of the season and its competition has seen hundreds of restaurants and cooking schools include pear creations on their menus and vie for a prestigious title of Australian Pear Month
This month is Australian Pear Month, so celebrate and cook with this humble fruit.
Restaurant or Cooking School of the Year. To build on the success of the two previous competitions, the Australian pear industry has introduced a new category to the competition, with cafés now being able to compete for an Australian Pear Month Café of the Year award. The pear dish with the most votes from diners will earn the best cooking school, café and restaurant the winning title for their category. This year, the industry will award state winners plus an overall national winner. Patrons of restaurants and cafes, and cooking school students, vote for their favourite pear recipe on the Australian Pears Facebook page for their chance to win a meal for two. Last year, Port Macquarie’s Zebu Bar + Grill, was awarded the title of the Australian Pear Month Restaurant of the Year, with its mouth-watering Rare Roasted Venison Saddle, Red Wine Poached Pear Tart Fine, Fig Puree, Lyonnaise Onion, Pistachio Dust, and Herb Game Jus. Bondi’s culinary school, Healthy Soy Cooking, picked up the Australian Pear Month Cooking School of the Year 2013 title, for its innovative creation of Pear, Chia and Tofu Creamy Energy Sorbet. Voting commenced on 1 March. Wild cards match-up By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE unexpected match-up of Seddon and the Sunshine Druids is set to take place over the coming fortnight in Turf Cricket’s North A1 final - beginning this Saturday. Neither club finished in the division’s top two after the home-andaway season and despite being on the road this weekend, they were able to win their respective semifinals to reach the decider. Impressive three-wicket hauls from Druids Jared Andrews and Leigh Wilson proved to be the difference at Taylors Lakes’ Lionheart Reserve on Sunday, where visiting Sunshine successfully defended its 164 to bowl Taylors Lakes out for just 57. Meanwhile over at Langshaw Reserve, Seddon’s 268 proved far too much for the Altona Roosters, who stumbled in their chase to fall 95 runs short of victory. Rooster Hamon Uppal fought hard for Altona on Sunday, but was run out for 69 and had little support from his teammates throughout the order. In the VTCA’s West B1 competition, Sunshine United advanced
to the grand final and will take on Sunshine Heights in the coming fortnight after going to Saltwater Reserve and defeating Point Cook on its home turf on Sunday. United posted 192 on day one with the help of Indika Dharmawardane (61) and Leigh Sheridan (58) in the middle order. The following day, Point Cook could never really string together any decent partnerships in its chase, falling short at 158 after losing its final wicket in the 72nd over. Sunshine Heights booked its ticket to the grand final in much more emphatic fashion, destroying Wyndhamvale with an outright win on its home deck at Ainsworth Reserve. After choosing to bat first, Wyndhamvale’s fate was sealed after just 23 overs out in the middle when it was bowled out for a measly 21. Heights itself wasn’t all that impressive in response only posting 118. But after again managing to get on top with the ball and restricting Wyndhamvale to 108 in the second innings, Sunshine Heights only needed 10 balls to score the 14 runs required for victory.

Marks, Topal steer sides to decider By ADEM SARICAOGLU MELTON Centrals and WLSC Marshalls will contest the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A-Grade Matting grand final after scoring semi-final wins over Point Cook and Wyndhamvale respectively on Sunday. Centrals’ 9/336 from day one on Saturday proved far too insurmountable for Point Cook at Blackwood Reserve, who in response could only muster 138 in 51.5 overs. Half-centuries for Melton Centrals batsmen Jason Marks (63),
Jack Doyle (63) and Michael Bairstow (61) on Saturday helped set up the win, while on Sunday, Marks stamped himself as man of the match with a five-wicket haul. Meanwhile, the Truganina-based Marshalls were brutal in their demolition of Wyndhamvale, coming away from Arndell Park with a whopping 279-run win. Himanshu Topal’s unbeaten 101 helped set the tone for the Marshalls on Saturday, while a pair of 76s from Pranav Sood and Gagan Sethi also proved handy in the mammoth opening dig.
Only Stephen Williams could muster a score beyond 20 with 21 runs for Wyndhamvale, while opener Scott Bomford was the only other man to reach double figures, scoring 16 before getting trapped on the pads. In the WDCA’s A Turf competition, Grand United has advanced to the grand final after successfully chasing down Bellbridge’s all-out 141 on Sunday. Grand United chose to send Bellbridge in to bat on the road at Mossfield Reserve and it proved to be a good decision 50 overs into the

clash on Saturday. Matthew Frew was excellent with the ball in his nine overs for Grand United, claiming four wickets for just 15 as team-mates Luke Fox (2/35), Josh MacDonald (1/12) and Laurence Browes (1/23) all chimed in with cameos of their own. The run chase lasted 75 overs, but Grand United had control of it throughout, only losing five wickets on its way to 142. Captain Glenn Sullivan topscored with an unbeaten 34 and Jeremy Preston was just as good to finish carrying his bat on 31.
WHEN launching any new sporting venture, it is important to get the right people involved. And for the team at Play Badminton, they don’t come much better than Ben and Erin Walklate. The husband-and-wife pair are both badminton coaches at elite sports school Maribyrnong College, with Ben having spent eight years of his career in the Australian National Badminton Squad while Erin represented Australia at both Olympic and Commonwealth Games level. Now, they are hoping to get the community of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs involved in the sport. Using the state-of-the-art Maribyrnong College facilities, players will be able to hire courts outside of school hours. “We saw an opportunity to open up the facilities and give the community the chance to come in and use the courts,” Erin explained. “We would like to see everyone play. We are definitely keen to get some people through the doors who have played before. “Also, we are really hopeful to

in the future, Erin said she would also look at social competitions and tournaments. As the Commonwealth Games approach, Maribyrnong will be hosting its own lead-up event, the Victor Maribyrnong International Series. The tournament will attract some of the best players from around the world. “That is an international series event run by Badminton Australia,” Erin said. “That will actually pull some players from overseas, possibly New Zealand and countries throughout Asia as well as some of the best players in Australia will be coming to play here. “It will be a really good time for us, and I think for everyone in the community to see some good badminton. You don’t often get to see it unless it is an Olympic year or Commonwealth Games year and even then the coverage that badminton gets is quite minimal.” To find out more information on the Play Badminton program, Erin and Ben can be contacted via the website, www.playbadminton.com. au or on 0498 623 111.

Cougars’ final goal By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEALBA Green Gully’s quest for a hat-trick of successive Luscombe Shields is on track after it advanced to this weekend’s grand final on Sunday. The North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s most successful club of recent memory had to get past Gladstone Park on semifinal weekend to book its ticket to the decider, and the Cougars did so with relative ease by seven wickets. On Saturday Kealba’s bowlers got on top of the Gladstone Park order, knocking it over in 67 overs for 149 runs. In response the following day, the Cougars were in a little bit of trouble at 3/46, but with Andrew Webb (73 not out) and skipper Evan Long (37 not out) at the crease, Kealba steadied to reach its target in the 53rd over. “Obviously it was a pretty hot game, but all finals are usually that way and I’m pretty happy with the boys and the way they stuck at it,” Long told Star shortly after the win. “We knew exactly what we were aiming to achieve and obviously it was a grand final berth, but bowling first we were pretty confident we could keep the opposition down to a low score, and we were
pretty happy with 149.” Matthew Nadzielski was the key figure with the ball for Kealba, claiming four wickets from his 20 overs in the middle. Also handy were Jarrod Catania (3/38) and Danny Viani (2/19), while Andrew Webb (1/27) also got among the wickets to help set up the win on Saturday. “They (the bowlers) were all good and made it a lot easier for me, we held our catches in the field and most importantly, today Andrew Webb stood up with the bat making 73,” Long said. “Only losing one wicket today after losing two overnight made it a lot easier on the boys watching, but obviously regardless of how you win, the most important thing is that you do. So it was a really good team effort from everyone.” While the Cougars are no strangers to grand final cricket, this weekend’s crescendo will be Long’s first as Kealba’s captaincoach. “I’m excited for the challenge, that’s for sure,” Long said. “Obviously being a first-time captain is pretty exciting for me and the boys, but as we’ve spoken about all year, our main aim is to obviously achieve three in a row.”

After passing the Footscray total, St Kilda eventually called time on its innings with the score at 5/223 in the 89th over. shorts The underdogs beat the odds YARRAVILLE Club is into yet another Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division grand final after stunning competition frontrunner Greenvale on semi-final weekend. The Clubbers will face South Caulfield - who got past Airport West St Christophers - in the decider due to commence this weekend. Yarraville Club barely scraped into the final four and went into the semi-final as a somewhat heavy underdog. However, the Clubbers’ bowling attack took advantage of the soft wicket at Greenvale’s Section Road on Saturday to dismiss the host for 139 in less than 70 overs. Two late Yarraville Club wickets fell late on Saturday but when play resumed on Sunday, the Clubbers again showed Greenvale - its semi-final nemesis of 12 months ago - just how it’s done. With in-form opener Justin Baker leading from the front with an unbeaten 68 and Michael O’Keefe chipping in with 38 of his own, Yarraville Club surged home to reach its target of 140 in 53 and a half overs with four wickets still in hand. The final partnership between Baker and O’Keefe tacked on the last 65 runs of the day, while on Saturday Emmett Bronca was the star with the ball, claiming five wickets and 10 maidens from his 24 overs.
Dogs get no mercy ST KILDA handed Footscray just its fourth loss of the Victorian Premier Cricket season on Saturday. After dominating day one of the clash, the Saints returned to Mervyn Hughes Oval to inflict more pain on the Bulldogs. Having won the toss and batted first two weeks ago, Footscray battled its way to 153 before being bowled out in the 53rd over. The Bulldogs were led by skipper Dean Russ, who made 53 at the top of the order, while Shanuka Dissanayaka contributed 31. St Kilda went on to face 26 overs and despite the loss of gun Victorian duo Peter Handscomb and Rob Quiney, the Saints remained in the box seat, resuming their innings at 3/57. Footscray began day two needing quick wickets but the Bulldogs’ bowlers were met with some stiff resistance. Graeme Rummans and Thomas Moffat worked hard to see off the initial attacks. The pair added 93 for the fourth wicket before Rummans was run out for 47 by Hamish Winter-Irving. However, the wicket did nothing to slow the momentum of Moffat who was outstanding all afternoon. The opening batsman went on to score an unbeaten 123 to lead his

The loss sees Footscray finish the year in outright second spot on the Victorian Premier Cricket ladder. The Bulldogs were eight points behind the Saints who claimed top spot. From its 18 games, Footscray enjoyed 14 wins, seven more than the 2012/13 season. With finals begin-
ning this weekend, Footscray will take on Carlton at Mervyn Hughes Oval in the qualifying final which will be played on Saturday and Sunday. In other finals match-ups St Kilda will meet Prahran, Essendon will do battle with Ringwood while Geelong and Melbourne will also square off.
FOR the last time this season, riders came to Hoppers Crossing to contest the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums held at the VU Sport/ FCC Criterium Track - with one more round to be held next Sunday at Drake Boulevard in Altona to mark the end of a great summer of crit racing. The A Grade race was dominated by a twoman breakaway from the middle of the race, with 42-year-old Ascot Vale resident Miles DaCosta taking a strong win in what has been a stellar season for the A Grade breakaway specialist. DaCosta knew he was going to try for the break, but the trick was who to take up the road. “It started off a little reserved, with people shutting down every break,” he said. “When the bunch brought back Trevor Hutchings’ break, I attacked on the hill and put it into the gutter. I saw Ben O’Leary coming so I waited until he got to me and then we just pulled turns all the way until the end. Every time the bunch surged, we put in a couple of hard turns to answer theirs. You cannot ask for a better guy to be in a break with. Ben just worked hard and at the end we had an unspoken gentlemen’s agreement.” DaCosta took the win from O’Leary, with Travis Small holding off the bunch after attacking with three to go to stay clear for third place. FOOTSCRAY’S Cycling Club’s B Grade race was an evenly matched affair, with riders throwing in a multitude of attacks, but each and every attack was shut down almost before they could form by the hard-chasing bunch. But a lack of motivation and foxing saw 41-year-old Newport resident Antonio Marino escape the bunch and take the win, at one time having a lead of three-quarters of a lap. “My legs were feeling a bit sore this week, I didn’t think I would go too well today,” he said. “But, I fired up. When I went I didn’t think I would be allowed to stay away, so I was a little surprised to see my lead. Then I just got into my rhythm and just kept moving along and keeping an eye on the gap and once it started to get to three quarters of a lap I was confident I could keep it going until the end.” Marino finished well clear of the bunch, which pretty much gave up and just jockeyed for the sprint for the last 15 minutes. Brunswick CC’s Tim Feltham took out the bunch sprint and second, closely followed by Arron Liley.

Jets’ new top gun By ADEM SARICAOGLU HOPPERS Crossing junior Liam McMahon will captain the Western Jets in the TAC Cup - which begins Saturday week. The Jets last week confirmed their 52-man squad for the 2014 season along with a leadership group that includes McMahon, Liam Duggan, Jayden Laverde, Mark Orr, Lachlan Knight and Braden Ferrari. New skipper McMahon, 17, told Star the captaincy is an honour that could have gone to anyone in the leadership group. “All of them were definitely worthy of the captaincy, so I’m lucky to have such a great group of guys in the leadership group,” McMahon said. “They’re all very driven, they all know where we want to go as a club and they’ll be fantastic support on and off the field throughout the season.” McMahon, who over the summer has overcome groin troubles to be ready for round one, said he hopes to be able to set the standard both on and off the field as the club’s new captain. “Obviously it’s a great honour to lead the club, and I get the opportunity to lead a great bunch of young blokes,” McMahon said. “It’s a big season ahead which hopefully can bring finals and success with a few blokes drafted.
“I just want to lead by example on the field, make sure I’m putting together some good, solid performances out there and developing my own game to help the players out on the ground. “I also just want to be there as a role model both on and off the field and be really professional with the way I go about things.” Former Werribee Tiger and Spotswood premiership player Torin Baker is entering into his second year as senior coach after leading the Jets to last year’s finals series. McMahon said he has already developed a good rapport with his coach, and is looking forward to working with him as an on-field messenger throughout the year. “Torin and I have had a pretty good relationship,” he said. “I think we know where each other stand and I have to basically be his right hand man out on the ground. “So I’ve just got to make sure that if anything is going on, I need to be on top of it and I need to be able to relay (Baker’s) message wherever I am on the ground.” The Jets will take on the neighbouring Calder Cannons at Craigieburn’s Highgate Recreation Reserve in the opening round of the new season.
By LIAM TWOMEY DEER Park has added another former AFL star to its playing list, with Ryan Houlihan signing last week. Houlihan was drafted by Carlton in the 1999 National Draft. He went on to play 201 games for the Blues throughout his 11-year career at the top level. As well as holding life membership at Carlton, Houlihan placed in the top 10 in the club’s best and fairest three times and played in two preseason premierships. Deer Park president Mark McGoldrick said it was great to have someone of Houlihan’s calibre on board. “We are absolutely rapt to have him at the club,” he said. “All the stars really aligned. He has bought into a restaurant in Deer Park and he came down to the ground and offered up some sponsorship and stuff like that. “I thought he was playing somewhere else. During the week he said he was on top of things and he would like to come and have a game. “It is a big win for our club.” After playing as a utility throughout his AFL career, McGoldrick said Houlihan was expected to play across the wing, the half-back line and the half-forward line for the Lions. The marquee signing is the fourth former AFL player to join the reigning premiers in the off-season after Brent Guerra, Ryan Hargrave and Bret Thornton also committed to the Lions. Of last year’s premiership team, nine Lions, including Shannon Broadbent, Ryan Crawford, Matthew Towner, Shaun Buttigieg-Clarke, Sam Hunt and Jake De Sousa will not return. “That was either through retirement or they decided that they didn’t want to commit at the level,” McGoldrick said. “A few of them have gone to play second division.” Liam McMahon is looking forward to captaining the Western Jets this year. 114302 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Player system points the way: McGuane By ADEM SARICAOGLU KEILOR coach Mick McGuane has backed an AFL Victoria push for a player points system in local footy. McGuane - one of the most respected coaches in the Essendon District Football League - has spoken out against the big-spending clubs of local football, telling Star his club will continue to favour the promotion of local talent over paying top dollar for “imports”. “The competition’s spiralled out of control in relation to the monetary side of things,” McGuane said. “It’s ludicrous at the moment. We deal with talking to players on a week-to-week basis and recruitment has obviously got to a point where you just go to the highest bidder. “I just think points is the logical way to go about it because it’ll spread the talent pool around. It will stop clubs that can afford it - and have benefactors that don’t mind writing out a cheque - creating ‘chequebook footy’.” A new-look Keilor filled with more youth is set to take the field in the EDFL’s Premier Division this year. Former skipper Jarrod Garth, along with Luke Car-
Mick McGuane has thrown his support behind a player points system that will help curb increasing player Picture: MATHEW LYNN payments in local footy. 97934 telli, Daniel Cooper, James Armstrong and James Butty, have all left Keilor over the summer. However, the Blues are hopeful a number of aligned players from the VFL and TAC Cup may become available in certain weeks throughout the year. McGuane said the club’s youth policy would play a

major part at the selection table each week. “Our players who are listed to Keilor only understand exactly where we’re at,” McGuane explained. “If we think an 18-yearold kid’s going to enhance our performance to win on a Saturday, and we think we’ve got a role to play to get him back to where he should be,
we’ll certainly go down that path every week. “We’ve got a youth before age policy when it comes to selection criteria and if (two players are) evenly matched, we’ll always revert to the young.” Meanwhile, Blues president Craig Teal has confirmed Keilor Recreation Reserve will not be ready to host
the club’s round one clash with Airport West. The game could possibly be moved to Windy Hill, though it is more likely Airport West will be given hosting duties. Teal said the redeveloped venue would be ready in time for the traditional round three Good Friday clash with Strathmore.
Cox at the apex By LIAM TWOMEY IT IS hard to see Alex Cox ending up anywhere but the top. At just 16 years old, Cox is mixing it up with some of the top water polo athletes from around the state as she establishes herself as a rising star in the sport. The Maribyrnong resident made her first state team three years ago and since then, has also been selected for the Victorian under-14 and under-16 sides. However, it is not just in the juniors where Cox is turning heads. She also plays in the National Women’s League open age team with the Victorian Tigers. Although the jump from junior to senior competition is tough, Cox wouldn’t have it any other way. “It is very hard because I came from being the number one in the team in juniors and then coming into open women’s competition where I am not even in the starting line-up,” she explained. “It is really good though. It has helped me improve, and I really know when I am improving. “At first I was really scared. The coaching is very different to juniors where they are more like, well done and keep going. “In seniors, if you stuff up, it feels like the end of the world. I just take it all on and try and do as best as I can.” There has been no shortage of awards throughout her young career, with Cox dominating the Water Polo Victoria competition last year. She was named the top goal scorer and most valuable player in the junior women’s division as well as taking out the highest goal scorer award and tying for the MVP in State League One. There are no plans to slow down for Cox, who is hoping to go as far as she can in the sport. “I’m trying to make the Australian Squad that would be excellent,” she said. “I would love to go to an Olympics one day. For all the effort that I am putting in, it would be great to be able to make an Olympic side and play there.”

Genesis of a Lightning loss By LIAM TWOMEY
Hotly contested practice match IT MAY have only been a practice match, but the competition was hot at Arden Street on Saturday as traditional VFL rivals Werribee and Williamstown squared off. After being drafted by North Melbourne in the off-season, Ben Brown was back in the familiar colours as he went toe-to-toe with Williamstown’s Willie Wheeler in this contest. In what was the second practice game for both clubs, Werribee came out on top 15.10 (100) to 12.4 (76). 11631 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
VU Western Lightning suffered its second loss in the Victorian Netball League season on Wednesday night. The Lightning went down to Boroondara Genesis by four goals at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. In their second match in the space of five days, VU was slow out of the blocks against one of the league’s leading teams. The Lightning fell five goals behind at quarter time and the deficit increased to eight at the main break. From there, VU was able to regroup and launch its fight back. With Sophie Gunn in goals, the Lightning drew level in the third quarter. However, three late goals to Genesis proved crucial as Boroondara regained its composure and secured the 44-40 win. “At this level of the competition, if you give a team a start and you have to chase them down, you’re going to use a lot of energy,” VU coach Matt Hills said. “When we got our ducks in a row in the third quarter, we were able to come back to level just before three-quarter time. Unfortunately, we allowed them to score the last three goals of the third quarter ... that was probably a significant moment. “The last quarter became a bit of a scrap between two hard working but tired teams.” The result sees VU drop to fourth place on the VNL ladder with a 3-2 win/loss record for the season. The Lightning will now enjoy a week off before returning to take on Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels. “Against the two top teams we have played, we have given them both a start and been forced to try and chase them down,” Hills said. “There are some good signs as well. I think it (coming back) shows the quality of our outfit and our resolve, but when the heat of the battle was on early, we weren’t able to execute. It is something that we are going to work on now that we have got this break. “We will work really hard over the next couple of weeks to start to rectify this.” In other VNL results, City West Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the VNL ladder after their fifth win of the season. The Falcons were too good for Geelong Cougars, running out 60-41 winners.

Knights primed for season’s kick-off THE Victorian National Premier League season begins this Thursday night with Heidelberg United taking on South Melbourne. The following night the Melbourne Knights will start their NPL campaign at home to Northcote City as part of what will be a blockbuster opening weekend of top flight Victorian soccer. Knights coach Andrew Marth entering into his second full year in charge at Somers Street - is looking forward to seeing how his side will stack up in the newly formed league. The Knights have been busily putting the final touches on their squad and have recently announced the signings of Daniel Visevic, Antun Kovacic and Rodrigo Covarrubias. After finishing the home-andaway season second in the old Victorian Premier League last year, Marth said he has enough confidence his squad will at least be able to match the feats of 12 months ago. “If we can achieve what we achieved last year we’ll be exceptionally happy, but I firmly believe we’ve probably got a better squad than last year,” Marth said.
“We’ve made some crucial signings so we’re looking forward to it. It’s exciting times.” Meanwhile the nearby Green Gully Cavaliers will host top flight newcomer, Werribee City, on Sunday. Cavs football manager Raymond Mamo acknowledged the long and difficult process in getting the NPL ready in time for the upcoming season, but said his club and its more youthful group of senior players are itching to get out on the park. “We originally thought (the NPL) wasn’t going to happen this year, so I suppose it’s caught us and caught all of the clubs a little bit offguard,” Mamo said. “In relation to preparation, I suppose most clubs are in the same boat and didn’t play too many pre-season games this year. So we’ll wait and see how that’s going to have an effect on the team, but overall the boys have been training really hard. “Now we’re all just looking forward to kick-off so we can put all of this behind us and just concentrate on playing.” Green Gully opted not to go for any major signings this summer, instead topping up its senior squad from within its under-21s program.

Tigers ready to go all the way CRICKET finals are in full swing and Werribee Cricket Club has all four senior teams in, which is a credit to president Ivo Havard and the hard workers around the club. The first XI have lost the last two games very narrowly and will be hoping that is just a hiccup now the real stuff starts. They did finish on top of the ladder but only by percentage in the end. They will be looking for big finals performances from their stars Tim O’Brien (487 runs at an average of 60) Matt Dean (485 at 37) and with the ball Heath Pritchard (41 wickets at 9.41) Jono Burton (23 at 16.74). The finals are on this Saturday - the first X1 are at Avalon Airport Oval, the seconds at Soldiers Reserve, thirds at Ivanhoe Park and the fourths at Crispe Park, Reservoir. Yarraville Club Cricket Club which snuck into the VTCA finals has made it through to the grand final beating top team Greenvale. Emmett Bronca starred taking 5/39 and he was backed up by Adam Contessa 3/32. Chasing a modest 140 to win they were in trouble early at 4/25 then 6 /75 but veteran opener Justin Baker carried his bat for 68 not out and Michael O’Keefe 38 not out got them home by four wickets. They will meet South Caulfield in the grand final.

STEVE Thom, the chairman of selectors, tells me the WRFL interleague squad has been really burning up the track during the couple of sessions they have had so far. While some players are yet to commit, those who have put their hand up are really putting in. I hope all WRFL clubs get behind Brett Jacobs and the team when they take on the Southern Football League on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park at 11.15am. It would be great to see players, officials and supporters of all WRFL clubs at the ground to cheer on the boys from the West. I hope this competition can grow in the future and that players have the same desire to wear the WRFL jumper as an adult that you have when you are under age. IN other local footy news Deer Park has snared another former AFL player with Ryan Houlihan signing for the Lions for 2014. Some other interesting clearances see Altona losing Travis Lunardi, Joel Magnabosco, Steve Kennedy, Richard Knight and Anthony Chiu. Spotswood gain Sablich, and Dumbleton but lose Elliot Wood and Ben Perry plus the irreplaceable Chris O’Keefe and Lachlan McGhie, who I hear has retired. The Lampi brothers are on the move - Jessi to Yarraville Seddon Eagles and Jordan to Sunshine Heights. Troy Kelm is returning to Albion and the Stephens brothers, Sam and James, have moved yet again this time to St Albans. More news on clearances in the coming weeks. WYNCITY Bowl and Entertainment Centre has moved from its Riverside Avenue Werribee home where it has been for 30 years to a state-of-the-art new facility at 36 Wallace Ave, Point Cook, near the Phoenix Hotel. They have really gone upmarket with many more attractions than your traditional bowling alley. There is mini-golf, bumper cars, laser tag, arcade games, a restaurant and bar and a layout that makes it a top class entertainment complex with something for everyone. A well entrenched Werribee family business, I wish them all the best for the future which I think will be very good.
