The jab of life By KRYSTEN MANUEL ELIZA Ault-Connell was a happy, healthy 16-year-old the night before she woke up with a headache and nausea. By sundown the following day she was on life support, with amputations to both legs and all of her fingers, skin grafts and organ failure looming. “Quite often with meningococcal they say ‘healthy at breakfast, dead by dinner,’ that’s just how quick it actually attacks the body,” Eliza said. “When you’re feeling unwell you say ‘If I’m still feeling this way tomorrow I’ll go and see a doctor.’ With menigococcal minutes matter, minutes can literally save your life. “I was 16 when I contracted meningococcal septicaemia. That was in 1997 and there wasn’t the public awareness of the symptoms or even of the disease back then. So when I was diagnosed with it I didn’t know what it was and nor did my parents. “I woke up one morning just feeling unwell - headaches, nausea and vomiting. By that night I was on life support. “From there I had both my legs amputated below the knee, I had skin grafts done to my arms and legs and amputations to my fingers because with meningococcal you bleed to your extremities and everything inside breaks down, the veins and capillaries, you just bleed and it becomes septic. “They give you massive doses of antibiotics and remove any tissue or any limbs that have been affected, then deal with the after-effects of that which can mean organs shutting down. “Everything shut down on me, I was on dialysis for about four months.” Some 17 years after her battle began, Eliza is married with three children and a string of Olympic-level

sporting achievements most people could only dream of. “It’s shaped my life, but not in the negative way you would probably think,” she said. “I’ve been lucky enough that I’ve been able to represent my country in sport. I’ve competed in Paralympics, Olympics and Commonwealth Games in wheelchair track racing. “I ran the Olympics 800m demonstration race in Athens - it was absolutely amazing. It was the night of the men’s 100m final, so it was an awesome atmosphere - 100,000 people in the stadium, and I was lucky enough to get a silver medal, which was mindblowing. “Before that I competed in world championships and the Commonwealth Games in 2002 in Manchester, and the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006, I also got a silver medal there. “Eight years prior to that I’d had meningococcal and people had sort of, not ruled me out, but wondered ‘what does her future hold?’ It was a great thing for them to see that I could still go on and do so much. “I’ve been really fortunate - I’ve travelled the world and met amazing people. I probably wouldn’t have been an elite athlete without having meningococcal happen, so I consider it a blessing in disguise.” But Eliza said although she now lived a full and happy life, she would be devastated to see one of her children

Know what you’re vacci-

Social Seen It’s a tale for the times By KRYSTEN MANUEL, PICTURES: ADAM WILSON FRESH out of New York, Lally Katz brought her new show Stories I Want to Tell You in Person to the Butter Factory Theatre for a week of side-splitting performances. The show is written and performed by the amazing Ms Katz,
who is considered one of the funniest and most original playwrights working in Australia today. The play is a tale of art, love, money, shoes . . . and the apocalypse - not necessarily in that order. Lally was originally commissioned by Belvoir to write a play about the global financial crisis, but
you see the thing is - and this is a true story - Katz spent her commission (and then some) actually going to a fortune teller. In New York. More than once. So it’s the story of what Katz was doing instead of writing her play kind of like her version of that essay your teen wrote about what they

were doing instead of doing the essay they should have been writing but a whole lot funnier. Part confessional, part travel documentary and very big part failed romance, Stories I Want to Tell You in Person was most certainly a crowd favourite among the Border audiences.

New VIEW for women Beverly Stewart, Pat Corcoran, Barb Stieber and Andree Pender.
By KRYSTEN MANUEL ON INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day (Saturday), four members of the Wodonga VIEW Club travelled to Melbourne to celebrate with 120 Victorian VIEW Club members at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. Publicity officer Beverly Stewart, vice-president Pat Corcoran, assistant secretary Barb Stieber and program coordinator Andree Pender were extremely impressed with the conference. Guest speakers included magistrate Anne Goldsbrough, LLB who stressed how critical it was to understand, and identify family violence as well as how important it was for women to support each other, education being the key. “The president of the VIEW Club Robin Peerros and the Smith Family regional programs manager Mike Williamson were among the guest speakers,” Ms Pender said. “Mr Williamson gave an overview of his role with the Smith Family, because VIEW are actually part of the Smith Family - VIEW clubs raise money for the Learning For Life program. We support education for disadvantaged children, boys and girls, throughout Australia. “It was a magic day from the very beginning. The company was wonderful, we met new people, the guest speakers were brilliant.” VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a national women’s organisation founded in 1960 by George Forbes (then general manager of The Smith Family) as a service to women and the community. Originally the purpose of VIEW clubs was to encourage women to participate in the political and business life of the nation. Before 1960 women were not expected to have any political views

The overall mission of VIEW is to create social capital in Australian communities as a leading voice and valued support network for women. Currently VIEW club women throughout Australia are directly responsible for educating 1078 children from disadvantaged backgrounds in The Smith Family Learning for Life program. The six VIEW clubs in this area have a membership of over 120 women, supporting seven students (both girls and boys) throughout Australia in the Learning for Life program. Money is raised by VIEW clubs and distributed to students via The Smith Family head office in Sydney. Local club members raise funds by contributing a little extra each time they meet, as well as holding fund-raising activities during the year.
The jab of life From page 1 “Finally, after more than 20 years of research and development, we now have that important missing link in the chain - a vaccine that offers broad protection against MenB, the most common strain,” National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance head of clinical research Professor Robert Booy said. “We have seen the rates of meningococcal C fall rapidly over the last 10 years thanks to national immunisation, with no new cases of this strain occurring in those under 20 in 2011. However our work is not done.” Eliza’s story is one of triumph against all odds, but her personal drive is something she humbly says is within every single one of us. “It’s just something that most people, and I like to think everyone has inside them,” she said. “When you get that challenge you can’t just think ‘let it be,’ that’s when you do go and discover what you have inside of you to overcome that. “You’ve just got to get on with it, re-evaluate and reset your goals. You may have to go around a different way to get there, but you’ll still get there.”

Barbecues are held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings during daylight savings months between 6pm and 8pm. Wodonga Council are looking for neighbourhoods to host a free barbecue this summer. Come along, meet your neighbours and have some fun. To nominate your street or for more information, please visit wodonga.vic.gov.au/neighbourhood-bbq or phone events co-ordinator Kellie Miller on (02) 6022 9300.
Wodonga VIEW Club currently meet twice monthly on a Wednesday. The first Wednesday is a coffee morning at a different location each month, and the third Wednesday is a lunch meeting held at the RSL club, Reid Street, Wodonga. Interesting and informative guest speakers are welcomed at most meetings. “When considering retirement I looked around to join a club where I could feel comfortable and valued, do something meaningful for others as well as develop a new group of friends,” Ms Pender said. “The Wodonga VIEW Club ticked these boxes for me. I have been a member now for three years and look forward to our gatherings each month.” For more information or to join Wodonga VIEW please contact the club president on 0260 245 787 or secretary on 0260 243 478.

Proudly supported by the Albury City Council through the Community and Cultural Grants Program, The Other Theatre Company has worked tirelessly to bring to life a new script, where the play is translated into modern English, making this the ideal production for those not familiar with the original language of the play. Featuring a cast of over 40 talented local amateur actors, musicians and singers with spectacular costumes, singing, dancing and music, this is a faithful adaptation of Shakespeare’s original play, with plenty of laughs guaranteed. Eyes on the land HOLBROOK Landcare’s annual Sustainable Agriculture Forum 2014 has been a resounding success, with over 100 people attending. Participants came from as far as the Blue Mountains to hear speakers address the topic Farming our Soils: Farming our Landscapes. Organisers said feedback had been overwhelmingly positive regarding the quality of speakers and relevance of subject matter to issues within the area. The first session included discussion from two scientists - a soil carbon researcher from NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), Susan Orgill, and CSIRO in Adelaide representative Dr Gupta Vadakattu, on the topic of soil biology. Both speakers emphasised that managing soil carbon and soil biology could be of great productive benefit to farmers. Dr Leah Moore from the University of Canberra then spoke about hydrogeological landscapes mapping - a great resource for land managers to help them understand water movements at the landscape level. These discussions added value to current work being undertaken by Holbrook Landcare Network in the soil carbon hydrology field. Addressing the second theme, Soils in Practice, were farmers John Ive (Talaheni, Yass) and Vince Heffernan (Moorlands, Gunning). John impressed the crowd with the sheer volume of data he has recorded and analysed. The use of this information helped environmental and production improvements on his farm over the last 30 years. Many Holbrook Landcare Network members could relate directly to these farmers’ experiences with long-term HLN programs such as Rebirding the Landscape, Gumming Up the Gullies salinity management and bore monitoring. Mr Heffernan’s production success with wool and biodynamic lamb were also of great interest. “I’m an advocate for biodiversity,” he said. “I believe all farms could and should have five per cent to 15 per cent of their area under regeneration at any given time. I want to convince other farmers that this is do-able, achievable, necessary and essential. “It is not enough to plant a few trees and think you’ve done enough.” Mr Heffernan’s convictions sat well with the Holbrook Landcare Network crowd, who perennially engage in production practices that improve environmental outcomes. In the afternoon, Kate Sargeant from VIC DEPI gave an overview of results and findings from the EverGraze project, including the Holbrook Landcare Network proof site. “We have the evidence of profit, risk, environment, lifestyle and farm management impact of practices from real data in the region, and this is readily available for farmers on the

Evergraze website,” she said. MLA’s Leanne Sherriff introduced MLA’s new program Farm 300 which offers cattle and sheep advisor training and support to build practical knowledge and skills to boost on-farm production and profitability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. Professor Bill Gammage finished the day with a talk based on his book The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines made Australia. This presentation provoked many questions and people queued to speak with Bill and get a copy of his book after the forum. The Holbrook Landcare Network Sustainable Agriculture Forum was made possible through support from Meat and Livestock Australia and the Murray Local Land Services.

Something fishy about run TEAMS and individuals will test their fitness and raise money for local charities by competing in the third annual ‘Fishy’ Trail Run and Half Marathon on Sunday 6 April. Organising committee member and Parklands Albury Wodonga community ranger Ms Ant Packer said the ‘Fishy’, which begins from 9am, features six and 12-kilometre trail runs plus a 21-kilometre half marathon course. Now in its third year, the Fishy Trail Run and Half Marathon showcases Parklands Albury Wodonga’s regional bush parks as competitors can walk, jog or run along the banks of the Kiewa and Murray River and its tributaries. Neighbouring land-
holders are providing support by opening their private properties on Wodonga Creek for the event. “This trail run and half marathon is for everyone, from those wanting to walk and enjoy the unique surroundings to the serious trail runner wanting to clock up points for the North East Distance Runner of the Year award,” Ms Packer said. She challenged workplaces, families, clubs and organisations to enter their team in the Fishy Team Challenge with “The Team Challenge Cup” being awarded to the team of four that fund-raises the most. For those not able or interested in walking, jogging or running, we would love more
volunteers to help at the finishing line on the day of the Fishy. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Border Trust and Parklands Albury Wodonga. Transport to the starting line will be provided by courtesy buses which will shuttle participants from Stockies Bridge (near Belvoir Park, Wodonga) at 8am and 8.30am to Kiewa River Parklands, Killara. The event is priced to encourage families, work colleagues and keen runners to enjoy the unique surroundings the course provides. that the school had been doing some renovations, decided to contact them. “It is a life-saving piece equipment to have on-hand,” she said. “Hopefully they will never have to use it but if they do then it will be there.”
I enjoyed Peter Mourik’s “Imagine” letter (NewsWeekly 19 January) but am astounded by Darren Cameron’s comments mentioned in the article “When Two Tribes Go to War” (NewsWeekly 5 March). There is his paranoia it seems regarding the so-called “political agenda” behind the views of thousands of Albury citizens. The “agenda” is to protect the privacy of any person entering and/ or leaving the legal Englehardt Street Clinic, and to protect them from intimidation. No matter what your misleading information is to the public Darren Cameron, the greater majority of Albury people (and surrounding towns I might add), are truly “over” the protesters outside the legal Clinic in Englehardt Street. On Thursday 27 February there were five protesters outside the clinic. Two were on the same side of the street as the clinic (and they handed brochures to two women as they left the clinic) and three were standing on the opposite side of
the road - they all watched the two people enter and leave the clinic. Personally I think that the protesters’ behaviour is voyeuristic, to say the least. I have listened to a large number of Albury citizens when I have been collecting signatures for the privacy petition, and many instances have been reported to me of harassment and intimidation outside the clinic. I do not discount what I have been told by people who have been hurt by the comments and actions of the protesters. Also these hurting people do not want to publicly be named, hence the difficulty to make legal reports to the police. And what was I doing in Englhardt Street? I was visiting a neighbour who has for nine years dreaded going into her front garden because of the protestors! Privacy and freedom from intimidation is the goal! Wendy Cole, Albury.

The Radcliffe Funeral Services chapel.
For a personal touch – Radcliffe Funeral Services.
Hard time for money talk By KRYSTEN MANUEL DISCUSSING death and money can be quite uncomfortable and upsetting for the family left behind. For this reason, advertisements for funeral insurance and bonds are rife through our televisions, radio and print media. But Radcliffe Funeral Services warns not to be fooled by seemingly convenient, quick and attractive deals involving insurance and bonds - the only safe funeral investment is a complete pre-paid funeral at today’s prices. “We don’t offer insurance because insurance premiums keep going up - if people can’t afford to keep paying the
premiums then eventually they could lose all their money,” Radcliffe funeral director Lindsay Radcliffe said. “With most pre-paid funerals, we’re talking 10, 15, 20 years time. A lot can happen in 10 years - recessions, anything.” Radcliffe Funeral Services offer a genuine pre-paid funeral - you pay once and that’s it. “We’re also the only funeral directors in the district who don’t do bonds and insurance,” Mr Radcliffe said. “When buying a bond or insurance the seller will say ‘a funeral at today’s prices will cost you $10,000.’ But at the time of the funeral if the interest rate
hasn’t met the cost of inflation, the family will have to pay more. “For families, they want the peace of mind of knowing the funeral’s paid for. “Also, if pensioners take for example $10,000 from their investment, they may receive an increase in their pension. A lot of elderly save money for funerals. “They might have $10,000 sitting in there to pay for their funeral thinking ‘I can’t touch it,’ whereas if they take it out for a pre-paid funeral, it lowers their assets and pre-paid funerals are not means tested by Centrelink. In terms of lifestyle, it’s a good choice for today. “The money is invested in a government guaranteed fund, in their name
and we don’t actually touch it. “We can’t access that money until such a time as death occurs and we produce a doctor’s death certificate. They’re guaranteed they’re not going to lose their money. “At the time of death we can sit down and talk about the funeral; we don’t have to talk about money. We can talk about the deceased, their life and what service they’d like, which is a great thing. “If they move away from the district they can transfer their funeral fund to wherever they go. “Similarly, if someone has a prepaid funeral with another company and
they wish to change to Radcliffe Funeral Services, they’re welcome to do that.” Mr Radcliffe said anyone who thought they would like to go through the pre-paid process can visit Radcliffe Funeral Services where they can choose their options and be given a free, no-obligation quote before investing. Radcliffe Funeral Services also offers a personal funeral arrangement guide to anyone interested in pre-organising or pre-paying their funeral. Making them a star of the screen FUNERAL tribute videos have become a popular way to remember lost loves ones. Video tributes are a unique and beautiful way to provide a touch of personalisation to the memorial service. Most videos will feature the favourite songs of those who have passed away, with images, video, titles and captions from throughout their lives. They are usually played at the memorial service or other gatherings in the days following death, providing a virtual trip down memory lane. One person can co-ordinate the entire effort or it can be collaborative, with everyone offering favourite photos for the video. Video tributes can be made several different ways, including: At home using computer software. Depending on how comfortable you are using this type of technology, you can do the entire thing yourself. Modern computers usually come with simple video editing software like Windows Movie Maker. Seven steps of grieving By KRYSTEN MANUEL TO HAVE insight into what one is going through at a time of loss can be a precious gift to your grieving loved one. One of the best ways to gain this insight is to understand the the seven stages of grief, essentially ‘meeting them where they’re at.’ 1. Shock and denial. You will probably react to learning of the loss with numbed disbelief. You may deny the reality of the loss at some level, in order to avoid the pain. Shock provides emotional protection from being overwhelmed all at once. This may last for weeks. 2. Guilt and pain. As the shock wears off, it is replaced with the suffering of unbelievable pain. Although excruciating and almost unbearable, it is important that you experience the pain fully, and not hide it, avoid it or escape from it with alcohol or drugs. You may have guilty feelings or remorse over things you did or didn’t do with your loved one. Life feels chaotic and scary during this phase. 3. Anger. Frustration gives way to anger, and you may lash out and lay unwarranted blame for the death on someone else. Try to control this, as permanent damage to your relationships may result. This is a time for the release of bottledup emotion. You may rail against fate, questioning “Why me”? 4. Depression, loneliness and reflection. Just when your friends may think you should be getting on with your life, a long period of sad reflection will likely overtake you. This is a normal stage of grief, so do not be “talked out of it” by well-meaning outsiders. Encour-
agement from others is not helpful to you during this stage of grieving. During this time, you finally realise the true magnitude of your loss, and it depresses you. You may isolate yourself on purpose, reflect on things you did with your lost one, and focus on memories of the past. You may sense feelings of emptiness or despair. 5. The upward turn. As you start to adjust to life without your dear one, your life becomes a little calmer and more organised. Your physical symptoms lessen, and your “depression” begins to lift slightly. 6. Reconstruction and working through. As you become more functional, your mind starts working again, and you will find yourself seeking realistic solutions to problems posed by life without your loved one. You will start to work on practical and financial problems and reconstructing yourself and your life without him or her. 7. Acceptance and hope. During the last of the seven stages in this grief model, you learn to accept and deal with the reality of your situation. Acceptance does not necessarily mean instant happiness. Given the pain and turmoil you have experienced, you can never return to the carefree, untroubled you that existed before this tragedy. But you will find a way forward. You will start to look forward and actually plan things for the future. Eventually, you will be able to think about your lost loved one without pain; sadness, yes, but the wrenching pain will be gone. You will once again anticipate some good times to come and even find joy again in the experience of living. Keep these stages in mind when you are supporting your loved ones through this sad time and remember, while we can struggle for things to say to comfort, just being there is comfort enough.

It’s time to think about your plan By KRYSTEN MANUEL FUNERAL arrangements are something most of us do not want to think about. But a little preparation can have benefits such as alleviating stress on the family at the time of death and ensuring that your wishes are known and carried out correctly. Funds can also be put away to cover future expenses. The staff at Lester and Son offer a range of services to suit your needs, fit your budget and will provide sound advice on the options available to you. Plans can be discussed by making an appointment to visit their office, at either Albury or Wodonga locations. “The company website has recently been upgraded with extra information on funerals and there
is also the ability to leave a tribute to someone who has passed,” Lester and Son’s Pauline Harbick said. “The information is very comprehensive to assist families with some very important decisions. “Some people prefer not to come into a funeral director’s office to make their own arrangements, so Lester and Son now has a facility where they can send a message online and we can send them an online pack which they can fill out and return. “That way the arrangements are done from the comfort and privacy of their own home and in their own time.” Those who would like to utilise this new service can send an inquiry via the “contact” page on the Lester and Son website at www.lesterandson.com.au Lester and Son is an award-
winning business with a reputation for outstanding service for over 100 years. The local owners, Andrew and Pauline Harbick and Darren and Julie Eddy, are proud to lead the way with high standards for funeral care and are the only funeral business with offices in both Albury and Wodonga. Sorting out the snarls WHEN someone passes away, what they leave behind and honouring their wishes are extremely important, so why go anywhere else but an accredited specialist in wills and estates? Warwick McLachlan is the only accredited specialist in the region, having worked in the field for 46 years. “When you die you want everything to go as smoothly as possible - without bickering, court fights or going off to the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal,” he said. “I have been involved with many estate court and tribunal proceedings and costs against the estate are large and there is much damage to the family fabric. “Getting an estate plan in place minimises fights later on.” During a time of grief it is difficult for people to have to work through legal issues. “But the burden can be lightened by ensuring you have a valid will in place which is clear and meets legal requirements, while also ensuring your intentions are met. As of January this year, Mr McLachlan has recruited a fresh face, Sarah Coombe. Sarah has been a solicitor since 1994 and her work has been mainly in litigation. “Wills and estates is an area I have enjoyed working in and am very happy to now be doing that work exclusively,” she said.
Sarah Coombe and Warwick McLachlan will help you settle the wishes of your loved one. “It is such an important role to help someone with their estate planning, or to help someone who has lost someone and is working through the process of administering that person’s estate. It is a very personal, and sometimes difficult process and to be able to help is very rewarding.” Mr McLachlan says while there are ways to ensure your assets are protected and end up where you intend them to, if you
don’t have a plan in place they may be hit by tax, family disputes and extra costs in sorting out your estate. “The more thought and preparation put into the planning process, the better the result,” Mr McLachlan said. Call in at 804 Delany Street, North Albury, or call on 02 6025 1323.

Local play set to premiere By KRYSTEN MANUEL A PLAY by local emerging writer Leisa Whyte is set to premiere on the Border this month, after receiving City of Wodonga 2013 Arts and Culture Contribution Program funding. The play, A Different Telling will be performed at The Jazz Basement Wodonga on 20-21 March, featuring an all local cast and crew. The play is set in a local bar where Mia, a uni student tackling an assignment on identity, meets Giacomo who changes her life forever. What follows is a story of love, loss and the resilience that comes from our experience of life, especially when it involves leaving one’s homeland to start a new life on a foreign shore. “I think the choice of actors will stand out because they’ve really brought the story to life in the way I had hoped,” Ms Whyte said. “For me, that’s really important to pick the right people to portray the characters.” Ms Whyte said A Different Telling was the first play she had written for adults, and found perfecting it was a 10-year job. “I’ve written plays for school children and a drama school that I work at, but I hadn’t done a play for adults before,” she said. “I’ve certainly been writing all my life but this is the first one that I’ve put out there for adults to take on board, which is pretty exciting. “It was challenging in finding time to sit down and write it. I needed to write in blocks of time and I was working full-time, so I started to take some time off and devote it to the writing.
Leon Walsh as Giacomo Rossi and Nikki Wilson as Mia Rossi in A Different Telling. “It’s been about 10 years in the making and it’s finally come to fruition in the last 18 months.” Ms Whyte said audiences could expect to relate to the characters she had developed. “I think most people will be able to relate to at least one of the characters or the experiences they bring to the story,” she said.
Box office
“It certainly will resonate with a lot of people who have family that have come to Australia to make a new life and all the joys and challenges.” One of the Border’s best drama facilitators, Sharyn Hill, will direct the play and says she is excited to be working with an inspiring story and talented group of actors. “The telling of this story brings
together people from all backgrounds and allows a unique experience to unfold for all those involved,” she said. “I hope this gives inspiration for other community-based projects to come to life within the realm of theatre.” Ms Whyte said the play was a tribute to all involved and the spirit of community theatre.
“The community theatre is very much about people giving up lots of time and resources to make something come to life like that,” she said. “It’s not just my work, it’s a collaborative effort.” Tickets can be purchased by calling The Cube Wodonga Box Office on 6022 9311 or online at thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets

300 reasons to dislike gorefest MOVIE: 300: Rise of An Empire DURATION: 1 hour 42 minutes Starring: Sullivan Stapleton Eva Green ON THE surface, the time seems ripe for a bit of “This is Spaaaaaarta!” action. Sadly, however, this is not the film you are looking for. “300: Rise of An Empire” takes place before, during and after the previous epic of 300. Whatever Ancient Greece looked like, I’m sure it looked nothing like this. King Leonidas does make a brief
appearance, and the long-missed Queen Gorgo has some screen time as well. But the hero is Aussie Sullivan Stapleton, playing the hero Greek general Themistocles, of Athens. At one point, the Greek visits his opposing commander and they become somewhat intimate. Surprisingly, however, she is a woman. This brings us to Eva Green, who plays opposing commander Artemisia, in truly demented style. Remember the days when baddies were bad with a capital B? That’s Eva. The battles are mostly naval in nature, but it’s blood that steals the show

- great, gushing buckets of it. On the monochromatic screen, it’s often the only colour, spray after arterial spray, until it loses all effect and seems to be the only fluid on the screen. Not bad for a film mostly set at sea. The tale’s a little dry - no pun intended - there’s not much character engagement, and the screen is filled with empty spectacle. It is a certainty that there is virtually not a real scene in the entire film - computer-generated imagery rules the day. Straight to DVD for this one. - Jason Beck

2014 is only a couple of months old and the home entertainment industry is buzzing with new product and developments. Probably the biggest stories are the new release home theatre packages becoming even more aligned for music, with many of the recent new features skewed towards quality audio. For many the question mark appears - my home cinema plays music? This is true, however most theatre packages only provided the most basic of left and right music information as with most theatre packages the centre and sub-woofer are the most important part of the system. Who is making the difference? We are witnessing some serious stereo brands entering the market and old hands in Marantz, Onkyo and Yamaha suddenly focus more towards the music customer via the AV receiver. The move is logical to incorporate blu-ray, CD, streaming, and TV into one neat package while providing an audiophile music performance. An example from the audio side is the new MRX 710 from Anthem. In my view this level of current drive has not been seen in traditional AV equip-
Yes your home cinema plays music, but how good is the quality? ment for double the price. The receiver includes a genuine 150 x 4 watt bi amplifier (that is we run two 150-watt musical signals to each stereo speaker) and still providing surround sound for your home cinema experience you end up with the best of both music and cinema in one system. The news continues with our hideaway speaker systems, a number of new releases from Swans, Jamo and Paradigm with KEF to follow shortly, each have improved the empha-
sis on better musical in ceiling and in-wall speakers. This has also enhanced the multi-rooming musical capabilities for brands like Sonos to send high-quality music to all parts of the home, allowing for all your rooms to play different material all at the same time wirelessly. If you are upgrading and it is just not about the cheapest product on the market, another world of performance awaits more competitively than most realise.

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga
Some stand-out features By KRYSTEN MANUEL
A STUNNING in-ground pool and garden retreat, direct back gate access to Les Stone Park and generous guest quarters are just three of the stand-out features of 8 Parkland Drive. From the street, one can easily see this home is split-level, with a single roller door garage on the lower level and the main living areas on the upper. The front garden is well established, but not high maintenance and kept neat and tidy. Through the double front security door (all external doors are security for extra peace of mind) will take you to a crossways where you can go down-
stairs to the lower level, straight ahead for the kitchen/ living area or off to the sides for bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry. Heading towards the bedrooms will take you past two sneakily positioned cupboards that can be used as your heart desires. Bedroom one is queen-size and includes three doors of built-in robe space. Bedroom two is king-size with the same built-in robe arrangement. The master bedroom is king-size, including four doors of built-in robe storage and a gloriously large window for ample natural light.
The main bathroom is cleverly detached from the toilet for extra convenience, and having been renovated in the last five years gives it a modern, sleek feel with all the benefits of a large shower and vanity, plus an extra low bathtub - perfect for a young family. The laundry is also found on the upper level, complete with two storage closets, ample space for the whole family’s washing and ironing, and balcony/yard access. To the living area and you will notice the sheer size of the open plan lounge/ kitchen and dining, made to look even bigger thanks to double sliding doors to the balcony and a view
that reaches out across Les Stone Park. The kitchen itself is very spacious, with gas hotplate, stainless steel electric oven and dishwasher. The lounge room is set on beautiful floating floorboards, with a split-system, evaporative cooling (throughout the home) and gas log fire for those chilly Border winters. Downstairs to the bottom level and you will be pleasantly surprised by what most would refer to as ‘the guest room.’ King size and complete with ensuite (shower/toilet/vanity), this room is perfect for those who love visitors and want to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
Finally, the backyard - a term which really doesn’t do this area justice. The most beloved area of the property, the outdoor entertainment, garden and pool area is an oasis you just won’t want to leave. With fully undercover barbecue facilities, the entertainment area looks out to a carefully kept garden with gate access to the park - perfect for dog lovers. The pool is in-ground, fully enclosed and surrounded by red ochre pavers - what more could you want after this summer? Don’t miss your chance to snap up this perfectly located gem.

Private sales
Enzo Raimondo
ONE of the frequent questions that estate agents receive is about making an offer to buy a property in a private sale. This is not surprising, with at least 75 per cent of homes in Victoria now sold through private sale. If you are intending to make an offer then there are a few things to keep in mind. Once you are genuinely interested in a property, it is always wise to first have a qualified professional undertake a building inspection. This will ensure that the property is, in fact, in good condition and help to provide peace of mind for you, the buyer. Once satisfied, you may choose to make an offer, via an estate agent, which the seller may or may not accept - they may want to wait to see what other offers are made, or may want different settlement terms. This may result in a negotiation, with the agent continuing to act as a go-between. When negotiating, keep in mind the agent acts for the seller, not the buyer. A growing number of buyers use a buyer’s agent to assist with this negotiation process. As the negotiations continue, ensure your offer is in writing and must be accepted by a fixed date and time. You can also make it subject to obtaining finance, or the sale of an existing property. Offers must be in writing and in the form of a contract signed by you. If the seller accepts your offer and countersigns the contract before your offer expires, there is a binding contract. The contract sets out the terms of the sale, including the names of the buyer, seller and the estate agent, the title details, price, deposit, the bal-

ance owing and the date on which settlement will occur, at which time you can move into the property. With residential property, cooling-off rights apply for a period of three clear business days from the time you sign it. It’s important to note that this “cooling off” period generally does not apply when a property goes to auction. If you are unsure about the contents of anything you are asked to sign, obtain legal advice before signing any documents. It is important to follow the right steps. Once successful, you can move into your new home with a greater level of comfort, knowing that you have made the right moves to secure your new home.

Warriors set for China THE Warriors Albury Wodonga Dragon Boat Club is heading to China to compete in the 2014 International four cities Dragon Boat Paddling Festival. The club will have 28 members travelling throughout China over 10 days competing in four cities; Huizhou, Fang Cheng Gang, Nanning and Guangzhou. Club president Brendan Maher said it was an amazing opportunity for team members to experience dragon boating on an international level, competing against clubs from around the world. Racing will be held over 1000, 500 and 250-metre courses throughout the festival. Only in its second season, the trip to China is an incredible achievement for such a new club. “Recent achievements of the club included last weekend at the local Albury Wodonga Regatta, where the club took out gold in the premier mixed 20s against the top team in Victoria, silver in the women’s 20s, bronze in the Grand Masters, silver and bronze in the mixed premier 10s,” Mr Maher said. “Our success is due to the members’ commitment to the club, a rigorous training program where we focus on technique, endurance and teamwork.” The club will next compete at the Victoria State Championships to be held at Docklands Melbourne, racing over 500 and 250 metres. “The launch of our new logo and race tops featuring the Southern Cross will have us well prepared to fly the flag for Albury Wodonga and Australia,” Mr Maher said. For anyone interested in the sport of dragon boating the Warriors will host a come and try morning on Saturday 12 April, 8am-10am, Lempke Road, Gateway Island, Wodonga.
Late crowd packs rodeo By KRYSTEN MANUEL AFTER 18 years of dust, sweat and tears, this year’s Chiltern Rodeo was named ‘one of the best,’ drawing a sold-out crowd. “It was fantastic, the weather was just great,” Chiltern Rodeo Club and committee president Kelvin Duke said. “The crowd left their run to come in a bit late. At 5.30pm I was concerned we were down in numbers, but at about 5.45pm the place just filled to capacity, it was unbelievable.” Some 365 competitors from across Australia competed in the event, which was the third and final leg of ‘The Triangle Series.’ “We have people that travel from all over Australia for this event,” Mr Duke said. “This weekend starts at Kyabram on Friday night, goes to Merrijig Saturday night, and then comes to Chiltern for the following one and we call that the triangle series. “The expensive trophies are shared cost-wise by the three committees and one male and one female are the winners.” Chiltern was represented by two local riders this year, plus a crowd favourite in Fraser Babbington. “Tom Phibbs, who is just starting out bull riding, he rode all three of them, and Rylie Atkins in barrel racing and break away roping,” Mr Duke said. “We also had Fraser Babington from New Zealand. He’s leading the bull riding in Australia at the moment. He got the highest score five

in Australia as far as I’m concerned,” Mr Duke said. “Garry’s had the bucking horses of the year – Cheyenne Top Girl, Cheyenne Brave and there’s one horse in particular, Andy’s Boy, which is an unbelievable bucking horse.” The Chiltern Rodeo Club would like to thank all their sponsors for
another successful weekend. “We have great sponsorship support from local businesses and businesses in Wodonga, Corowa and Rutherglen - they really look after us,” Mr Duke said. “This weekend was just a great turn-out. There was a good, friendly, family atmosphere – it was one of the best.”

Local Sport Bikes hit the mountains By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Subaru Australian Mountain Bike Championships took place in Bright last week, with Australia’s best riders from all disciplines competing in five days of international standard racing. “The weather was terrific and the venue, trails and the track were very well received by all the riders, Mountain Bike Australia interim executive officer Shane Coppin said. “We had a good representation of locals among a big contingent from WA, QLD, Tas, SA and more - it was a good mix from all over with over 700 entries across the weekend. Riders were competing to take home the National Champion title for 2014, as well as to score valuable international ranking points. Australian athletes had an
extra incentive to record points as this year sees Australia hosting a round of the World Cup series in Cairns in April. Olympians Dan McConnell and Bec Henderson headlined the gruelling Cross Country disciplines, with both riders remaining undefeated in the discipline. In 2013 the formidable McConnell won the first World Cup race of his career in Albstadt, Germany and went on to record an incredible second place in the World Cup Series for the year. Henderson had her final year in the Under 23 Category in 2013, winning two World Cup races on her way to claiming the World Cup Series title. Australia is also a world leader in Gravity events, with Down Hill competitors in full flight. The Down Hill lead
events were won by former dual junior world champion Troy Brosnan and Tracey Hammah. National Championships action also included the fast and furious Cross Country Eliminator and highly skilled Observed Trials discipline, won by Jared Graves and Peta Mullins. Alpine Shire Mayor Peter Roper said the championships event was a fantastic addition to the local events calendar. “Not only is this a fantastic way for competitors and their supporters to enjoy everything the Alpine Shire has to offer, it also brings the exciting sport right to the doorstep of locals, Cr Roper said. “We have some of the best tracks and trails for mountain biking, fantastic touring routes for road cycling and a network of shared trails for the recreational rider and families.
