THE Queensland Motorcycle Road Race Series returns to Warwick this weekend with some of Queensland’s best riders taking on the Morgan Park Raceway over two days. Competitors will contest the first of two rounds of the Superbike and Supersport classes to decide Queensland’s Road Race Champions.
Adding to the excitement will be junior road racers showing their talents as they take to the track for round three of the Motorcycle Road Race Development Association series. The MDDRA is a hotbed for junior racing talent, and winners of the series are crowned Australian Champion according to Motorcycle Sportsmen of
Queensland club president Paul Dawson. “This year is looking to be a massive year for road racing in Queensland, round one will see some exceptional talent turning wheels at Morgan Park Raceway,” Dawson said. “We love to see the juniors out on track, the future for these kids is bright and it’s great to be able to host
a round of their national championship as part of our own State Championship and Club series.” Dawson said the 2013 Southern Downs Road Race Series had a high number of competitors, and was the premier championship in the state. “So merging the club series into the state championship was an obvious way

CWA turns 19 QCWA Condamine Valley/Warwick will be celebrating their 19th birthday on Saturday, 5 April commencing at 1.30pm, at the QCWA rooms, Grafton Street, Warwick. Over many years, the branch and its members have assisted families and organisations in Warwick and District, and it is the committee’s wish to acknowledge the past and current members who have worked so tirelessly so this service could continue in our community. There are many former members residing in our district and we would be delighted if they could contact Mrs Shirley Owens on 07 4661 2470 or Mrs Penny Campbell-Wilson on 07 4667 0386, thus allowing us the opportunity to personally invite them to this very important function. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, to view the recently completed renovations to our rooms in Grafton Street, and to meet our state president, Mrs Robyn McFarlane from Mackay. We look forward
doesn’t toe the line then we could be facing international sanctions. It is the weapon of choice used against nations that don’t do as they are told by the UN and the big powers. Imagine the dire straits Australia would be in if sanctions were slapped on us. In a flash, the wolf would be at the door. So, for the present, farmers will have to forego free money grants until there arises an administration that puts Australian interests first. In the meantime we won’t hold our breath waiting for this to happen. Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin.

Imposed agenda C. GAITSKELL (Free Times, 6 March) thinks there is some agenda in Abbott’s administration loaning money to farmers that will have to be repaid; at the same time giving millions away in foreign aid, and treading softly with rioting boat people. Well, Abbott and his predecessors have little choice when it comes to foreign aid. We are tied to United Nations agreements that mandate we have to give no strings attached foreign aid. In fact, the goal is to eventually forfeit 0.7 per cent of our GDP to foreign aid. Australians would be aware (we hear it often) that most of our manufacturing has gone, and the rest will surely follow overseas. More and more of our food is being imported despite the lie that we could become the bread basket of Asia. If Australia

see their reporting as. Letters writers work for nothing also, and usually have the home town advantage of good eyesight when it comes to seeing deliberate poor maintenance, and unsightly overgrown parks and walkways. This writer knows all about corn trash that was accepted by council as history, since it grew here last century! History then was not made by an absentee farmer as it is today! Perhaps if the local councillor spent more time as councillor rather than a scribe, Allora would get his money’s worth! It was once upon a time my privilege to hear one long-time councillor who felt the way to fix Allora, was to nuke it! That surely was scandalous and inaccurate reporting, or at least one would hope it was! The state of the SDRC is no longer the whispered worry of some ratepayers, but has reached a level that must involve the State Government. Duty calls councillors, please respond!! TENTERFIELD Senior Citizen’s committee is set to run a program of events for NSW Seniors Week next week. Senior’s Week, which this year carries the theme Live Life! is held from 15-23 March. NSW member for the Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the Tenterfield Shire Council had received $1000 from the State government to assist with organising festivities. “Because seniors play a significant role in our society, they deserve to be celebrated and have their contributions honoured,” Mr Marshall said. “The NSW Government wants to make sure that there is plenty to do this Seniors Week (1523 March) and Guyra Shire Council, the Inverell Art Society, the Tenterfield Senior Citizens Committee and the Walcha Council are each receiving $1000 to assist with the staging of their particular events,” he said. Mr Marshall said the Tenterfield Senior Citizens Committee had arranged for numerous peo-

feed sources you’re not familiar with, because that’s when people get into trouble.” “We also want to remind farmers to take care of their own mental and physical health, because if you are not healthy yourself, it will be much harder to make good decisions for your business.” “In my experience, whenever you are in a drought situation, when people are grappling with animal health issues, there are nearly always human welfare issues to consider as well.” “So we’re taking a holistic approach, dealing with animal health, environmental health,

Rodeo event riding high By TANIA PHILLIPS IT’S back! Rodeo made it’s exciting return to Stanthorpe at the weekend after a four-year absence and organisers couldn’t be happier. More than 850 members of the public and 235 competitors headed to the Stanthorpe Showground for a full program of rodeo action according to Stanthorpe Rodeo Sub Committee secretary Kylee Mochrie. “It was excellent - no-one was hurt and all the stock did
their job,” she said. “The stock contractor Hall Rodeo was fantastic and the committee worked extremely hard on the day. “I want to thank them and all the volunteers that came along - we couldn’t have done it without them. We’d all particularly like to thank the campdraft committee for helping us before, during and after. “It absolutely feels like it is back and it will be even bigger and better next year.” Ms Mochrie said plans are
already underway for next year and the committee are looking at potentially running a junior competition later in the year. “We made a great profit and we are ready to start us off for next year,” she said. “We had a lot of great feedback. A lot of people said they really glad to see a full rodeo program and couldn’t wait until next year. “Even the competitors loved being able to compete all together at the same place.”

POLICE are reporting a handful of arrests during Warwick’s festival weekend but no major incidents occurred. A man was reported wearing nothing but his boots outside the Civic Centre on Sunday. Police later located and charged a 24-year-old man with wilful exposure. Stanthorpe Police Senior Sergeant Mark Ireland said while there was very little in the way of crime reported over the weekend despite the very large number of visitors to the area. However, it was disappointing that most of the people charged were not visitors but the small group
of locals who police deal with on a regular basis, he said. “The prominent offences were public nuisance and liquor-related with 11 people either receiving onthe-spot infringements or alternatively charged and having to face Stanthorpe Court in April,” Sen Sgt Ireland said. Two wilful damage offences were reported, one in Symes Street where a rock was thrown through a window and the second where damage was caused to council gardens in Maryland Street. CCTV footage identified a 23-year-old Stanthorpe man at the scene and he was charged.

Dry days ahead NATIONAL Farmers Federation President Brent Finlay has urged local farmers to take advantage of assistance schemes as the Southern Downs becomes one of 15 new shires in Queensland now declared in drought. Emergency aid and funding is being made available to Downs farmers as 79 per cent of Queensland is declared in drought - the largest area ever recorded. Queensland Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry John McVeigh added the southern Queensland Shires of Banana, Bundaberg, Cherbourg, Fraser Coast, Gladstone, Goondiwindi, Gympie, Moreton Bay, Noosa, North Burnett, South Burnett, Southern Downs, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and Western Downs to the already long list of drought stricken areas, effective from 1 March 2014. Mr Finlay, who operates
a farm at Traprock just on the edge of the Southern Downs urged farmers to seek assistance from the schemes including the new $320 million assistance package announced by the Federal Government two weeks ago. Drought Concessional Loans totalling $280 million will be allocated to give eligible farm businesses the resources to recover from the effects of drought, however Mr Finlay urged farmers not to self-assess. “We urge people not to do a self-assessment,” he said. “Instead farmers should contact the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority - they know all the assistant measures that are available.” “They need to get them through what looks like being a tough situation with many farmers looking at going a second season without being able to plant a crop.” Mr McVeigh said the drought now extended all
the way to the coast, including some areas devastated 13 months ago by record flooding and was now pressing on the northern suburbs of Brisbane. “The number of local government areas drought declared is now 38, plus four partially declared shires, increasing the area of Queensland that is drought declared to 79 per cent,” Mr McVeigh said. “There are also 38 Individually Droughted Properties (IDPs) in another seven shires, and this number will continue to rise. “I am reminding all Queensland producers in need, not just those in areas drought declared for State Government assistance, that the income support in the new federal assistance package is now available from Centrelink. “Queensland and NSW are working with the Federal Government to make other aspects of the package, such as the debt restructuring loans, available as soon as possible.”
Festival gives economy a lift From front page Festival President Trevor Fitness said there had been a massive fund-raising effort. “This year’s festival ambassadors have done the Granite Belt community proud with the dollars raised the second highest recorded,” he said. “This ensures that our 50th anniversary will be amazing.” Festival marketing director Sarah Reeves said Weeroona Park was alive over the week-
end with a diverse range of food and award winning Granite Belt wine, as well as the all new Seasonal Harvest Marquee. “The Seasonal Harvest Marquee sold out of apples and grapes by 11am on Saturday and the food and wine appreciation sessions added a positive new element to the festival and a way for visitors and locals to learn more about the delicious produce of the Granite Belt,” she said. “The choice of food was
outstanding and I heard many comments from visitors that they could not believe what a diverse and friendly place Stanthorpe is.” Ms Reeves said now that the party was over, organisers were now looking forward to 2016 and were keen to hear what people would like to see for the 50thAnniversary. Comments can be posted to Facebook or Twitter, or emailed to marketing@appleandgrape.org.

IF you enjoy a drop of pale ale then the Warwick Show has something for you. The art of home brewing dates back hundreds of years and “moonshiners” were notorious in the southern states of the USA. But if you have what you consider the “best drop on the Downs” then bring it along to this year’s Warwick Show Home Brew competition where it will be judged alongside comparative beers, wines, spirits and liqueurs. The entries close Thursday 20 March at 7pm, just bring them down to the Warwick Showground, Douglas Feez pavilion. This new section will
be on display from Friday 21 March through to Sunday 23 March. And while the home brew is new - another old favourite, the Woodchop event, is back. Unfortunately, there was no wood-chopping competition at last year’s show but thanks to enthusiastic sponsors, this year Woodchop is back bigger than ever. Watch the chips fly when the axemen from the Queensland Axemen’s Association race the clock in the Sustainable Buildings 300mm Block Championship. There is a free Axe Throwing competition - open to everyone over 18 years old, so bring your axe and have a go.
All the action will be down on the flat near the food court and main Gerahty Bar on Saturday afternoon from 2pm. If you are in awe for the bygone days - then come along on Saturday and watch the Harness Spectacular starting at 8.30am and going right throughout the day. This exciting event will be held in Evans Paddock the classes range from precision driving to period turnout classes and there are classes for junior drivers. What: Warwick Show When: 21-23 March Interested: Entry $12 per adult, $7 pensioners/students and $3 per child.
Art entries flow A NEW art show is being held in conjunction with this year’s Warwick Show and it’s attracting a lot of interest. The Contrasts Art Show will begin with an official opening might on Saturday at 6.30pm, a week before the actual agricultural show begins. The theme for the event is Arabian Nights and groups and individuals within the community are combining their talents to make this a memorable evening. The annual art show, held
in conjunction with the Warwick Show each year, is being revamped and has been renamed Contrasts Art Show. Tickets for the Contrasts Art Show Official Opening this Saturday night will be available at the door and the cost is $18 per person and include a complimentary glass of wine and cheese, then a light supper will be served a little later in the evening. Bookings would be appreciated by RSVP to the show office on (07) 4661 9060.

Helping reduce IT risks to have a chat with our friendly staff. Windows XP retires: On the 8 April Microsoft will cease supporting Windows XP. What does this mean? From that date forward any security holes that are found and used to hack into Windows XP computers connected to the internet will not be fixed by Microsoft putting these computers at risk of being invaded. While there is no official upgrade from XP to Windows 7 or 8 we have developed a process to migrate an XP machine to either Windows 7 or 8 keeping all set-
tings, programs and user data. Depending on the hardware of the computer the cost to go from Windows XP to Windows 8 is $250, this includes a Windows 8 licence and all of your programs and data transferred. If your hardware will not support the new operating system we can build a custom computer and perform the migration for you. All the best from WCSR. – John Wode Contact (07) 4667 0782. What’s On Celebrating at O’Mahony’s pub
THERE will be a bear in Warwick and a chair as well when Play School’s latest concert tour pulls into town in May. Kids Promotions in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation announced this week that the Play School “Prince of Bears” show was set for The Scots PGC College Assembly Hall on Wednesday, 14 May from 10am. The Prince of the Bears show will see everyone’s favourite bear Big Ted go on a royal
adventure as he sets out to find his castle. On the way he is joined by his friends Humpty, Little Ted, Jemima and the rest of the Play School toys and they find themselves having lots of fun and adventure along the way in small farms and in large towns. But will Big Ted find his castle? The popular Play School live shows are specially designed to delight preschoolers and parents alike. The concert features songs, games and stories, pre-
sented by two Play School presenters, along with the real stars of the show the toys. As with the television program everything in the concerts is carefully paced especially for young children. Prince of Bears tickets are now on sale and are available from the main office at The SCOTS PGC College or online visit www.kidspromotions. com.au.

AUCTION ACTION LOOMS
A FARM auction in Old Koreelah Valley recently paid off handsomely for its owners when sold to a Brisbane buyer. Two weeks ago 56 White Swamp Road was sold to the highest bidder at $275,000. The lush creek-flats reverberated with the auctioneer’s callings, and the final fall of the gavel - SOLD! Attendees openly admired the property, now sold, in its unique and peaceful location bounded by Woodenbong Creek on its way to the mighty Clarence River. Drawing on their combined wealth of past auction room experience the auctioneer and the agent ‘worked the floor’ to increase the bidding upwards to get the property ‘on the market - for sale.’ The very good sale result took many of the local folk by surprise. And how the auctioneer kept the proceedings open while the agent ‘negotiated’ between the buyers and seller will go down in Old Koreelah folk-lore. Adrian Harper and Greg Norbury would be happy to join forces again in the High Country near the Border (NSW side) where a farm of any size must be sold. “In fact this rural auction selling service could go on-site anywhere along the New England Highway between Toowoomba and Armidale,” Greg says. If any farmer should be interested in selling in that High Country - Downs Regions corridor they can give Greg a call on 0427 278 455.

Secret lies in home-grown talent Secrets and Lies Network Ten 8.30pm Mondays
THURSDAY, MARCH 13
A LITTLE boy’s mysterious death in a south-eastern suburb on Brisbane’s fringe starts the six-part series Secrets and Lies. It’s a regular ‘whodunnit’ crime/drama series but, as
always, the murder is only part of the action. Ben Gundelach, played by Martin Henderson of The Ring fame, is a painter whose marriage is slowly falling apart. He discovers the body of his neighbour’s boy and almost immediately he becomes the prime suspect.
Suddenly the father-oftwo is caught up in the investigation in a trial by media scenario. The show boasts some fine Australian actors and talent, as well as a fairly strong plot. There are problems with execution - especially with Ben’s daughters - who don’t
seem to be able to portray the wounded children particularly well. Henderson leads the show well as the bemused and confused regular Joe who hates the spotlight and is losing jobs as word gets out that he’s a suspect. As always, this reviewer is happy to see local talent and
locally produced content. The story line is weak in places though and it is predictable and typical. Secrets and Lies isn’t groundbreaking or even particularly memorable but if you’re into crime shows and murder mysteries, it’s worth a watch. There’s also a strong in-
teractive element where viewers are encouraged to head to the website and try and solve the crime, as well as through social media. Certainly, though, it doesn’t seem to have a cult following online or otherwise but hooray to a show with some locally grown talent. - Danielle Galvin

Auto Parts Warwick Now Open! A new automotive spare parts and accessories shop has opened in the Warwick area. It’s called Auto Parts Warwick and is situated at 53 Kenilworth Street as part of Budget Quality Cars. The outlet was set up by Ronnie Surch, owner of Budget Quality Cars, to quicken up access to parts for his second hand vehicles. He says “Plus I was getting heaps of enquiries from customers who were after quality spare parts without the huge prices. Auto Parts Warwick caters for that market perfectly”. They stock a wide range of parts and accessories for vehicles including spark plugs, belts, oil filters, brake pads, shock absorbers, hoses, timing belts, batteries, windscreens, tyres and the like. Ronnie also said “We started with windscreens and tyres which created a lot of interest and it just grew from there, so I knew we had to set up a full shop to handle a variety of spares and accessories. The range will continue to grow for a while yet.” If initial activity is any indication of how well the new business will go, it will be a roaring success. The manager of Auto Parts Warwick is Michelle Forrest. For further details phone 4661 3520.

TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Venus is in Aquarius, taking you places you never imagined you‘d go. She is inspiring you to experiment, just when you thought you had found a comfortable groove. The grip of old habits is slowly releasing. Friends are having a powerful influence in all of this. Pick the right tribe. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) The Moon is rising in Gemini. This lifts you up and gives you confidence – and when you are confident the world knows about it. To communicate what is real, feels like some kind of karmic imperative that you have to fulfil. The existence of opposition in no way prevents you. CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22) These are happy days for Cancerian persons. The Sun is in Pisces, reinforcing all that is nebulous, emotive, fluid and poetic. You can lay your exoskeleton down and be non-defensively open. The planetary undertow is generally transformative. There will be challenges. Be open anyway. LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22) As the Sun slowly makes its way across the sign of Pisces, it’s best that Lions take a break from being too outspoken and instead hang out on the open prairie. Use these moments to check back in, to your heart and soul. Find the beauty and balance that comes with being left alone. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) All the activity taking place in Pisces, tempts you to drop all enforced discipline and invite space and time for your natural discipline to emerge. It’s always a risk letting the regulatory template go. One never knows if the result will be anarchic. Give it a whirl. An epiphany is in order. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) Mars is leaving Libra, but not without one last piece of drama on the way out. He gets himself into a tangle with Venus. She is in Aquarius evoking all sorts of social excitement, just when you were considering the quiet life. To go with change is easy in theory. Hone it in practice. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) The more you attune yourself to truth, the more you know you have to do some letting go. That which you are holding on to isn’t exactly serving you well. It’s surprising to be so attached. It is impossible to not know what you do know. Slip once again out of your chrysalis. Renew. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) The moment we take a strong position, everyone around us shows us their cards. You are being firm and others are showing you exactly where they stand, even in attempting not to. Passive expression is as articulate as active. Floating and drifting is a cop out. Set your compass. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Jupiter is heavily suggesting that fearful and controlling behaviour is not on. He is being reinforced by the three planets now in Pisces. Fluidity is the order of the day. Decide if you are going to resist or cooperate. Then, right or wrong, you are at least taking responsibility. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) You have a new visitor. Her name is Venus. Her job is to bring you delight. She will be honoured. If she is honoured with love and awareness, she can take you to some very lovely places indeed. If she is not honoured, she will become ravenous and feast indiscriminately. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Though on the surface you are the quiet type, it doesn’t mean you don’t have effect. Many are with you – and some aren’t. Some are attracted to your siren depths and some feel threatened by that same depth. A catalyst can set off all sorts of reactions by doing nothing. Be that.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) Though it’s definitely not your intent, someone has gotten the idea that you are sticking with the tried and true, just when they would like to experiment. This is a soft romantic phase for sure but you would never have guessed such misunderstanding would follow. Untangle knots.

UNITED TAX & ACCOUNTING IN MEMORIAM
In Memory of Betty Isabelle EZZY nee Lambert 29.01.44 – 18.03.13 If I had one more day with you I would sit and hold your hand, You would raise your eyes and look at me and know I understand. I’d ask you how you’re feeling, But I know you would tell a white lie. Coz if you told the truth, You’d know that I would cry. If I had one more day with you, I’d make every second last. We’d talk about my future and I’d learn about your past. We take too much for granted, This much I know is true. I should have asked more questions, And listened more to you. Silence is golden, This is what they always say. But I don’t like the silence, Since God has taken you away. We love you and miss our beautiful Mum and Nan. Glenn, Tanya, Samantha & Kemp.

NRL Wrap
First-round upsets show good, bad and plain ugly play from both sides. It was not all beer and skittles for the Bunnies with McQueen and Walker both on crutches after their 28-8 win. If the Bunnies can repeat the dose this week they should get the points at Bluetongue although their record at the venue is not great. BRONCOS v COWBOYS ANY questions Brisbane fans had about Ben Barba’s intent were swept aside with his first touch of the ball in Broncos colours. Brisbane’s forwards were enterprising and their backline more potent than last season. They were a little shaky in the second half when the Dogs bit back but showed plenty of ticker to get home. A different story this week when they host their northern cousins. The Cowboys galloped home in an enthralling match against the Raiders. The Raiders blew a 16-point lead and looked inspired early in the game - however Jonathon Thurston showed all of his guile and ability in this game. The Raiders were not able to withstand the constant pressure from the Cowboys. They scored 22 straight points to lead 22-16 10 minutes into the second half. Canberra hit back but the Cowboys toughed it out for a win. Broncos need to shut down J.T. to win at Suncorp on Friday night. I’ll stick with the Broncos at home but will not be surprised if the Cowboys pull out a big one. WARRIORS v DRAGONS WARRIORS fans must be wondering what hit them after their loss to a rejuvenated Parramatta Eels at Pirtek Stadium. Once again the Warriors failed to travel and fans are left with that all too familiar losing feeling. After an impressive performance in the trials the Warriors were simply underwhelming. Sunday’s defeat had a sense of deja vu - there looked to be a lack of attacking structure. They leaked points after
their opponents exposed weaknesses on both sides of the paddock. The cash that the Dragons invested to woo fiveeighth Gareth Widdop to the Dragons’ den look to have been well spent. Widdop, was one of a host of new faces in the St George Illawarra line-up as the wooden spoon favourites came from behind to overpower the injuryhit Tigers. I am prepared to give the Warriors another chance. STORM v PANTHERS MELBOURNE after a slow start posted the second biggest comeback in the club’s history to upset the Eagles at Brookvale. Storm supporters probably believe that Cam Smith can also walk on water after he kicked the field goal to secure their win. It was a game of two halves and Melbourne, who were starved of possession, looked to make better decisions in the second part of the game. While the old firm of Slater and Smith led the way there are few younger players who showed they are not afraid of the scoreboard. It was a win that bodes well for Melbourne in 2014. This weekend Melbourne are home to the Panthers who impressed with a solid win over an injury plagued Knights. The Panthers trailed 8-6 at half time and looked a little clumsy in their attack in the first half as both teams struggled in 30 degree heat. Not convinced that their win was good enough to trouble the Storm at AAMI Park. ROOSTERS v EELS THE Roosters were undoubtedly the biggest disappointment in the NRL round-one hen house. SBW finds himself on the sideline for the next three matches after accepting an early guilty plea to a shoulder charge. It capped off a miserable night for Williams who failed to make an impression on the game as the premiers were outclassed by their arch-rivals. The Eels were the
absolute surprise packet of round one. Only the most faithful Blue and Gold supporter could have dreamt of such a start to season 2014. William Hopate returned to the elite game after a two-year hiatus and had an immediate impact. It was a game for Eels’ debutants including their coach. Big Fijian unit Manu Ma’u showed he is going to be a handful for opponents. There seems to be a new and improved attitude at the Eels - let’s hope we see more of it and they build on the momentum they showed last week. The jury remains out on their chances in 2014 and I am prepared to give the Roosters the benefit of the doubt. After last weekend’s loss I think they’ll be back crowing here but don’t expect a win to come easily. TITANS v TIGERS THE Titans were outstanding against Cronulla on Monday night claiming two points in their game against a beleaguered Cronulla. It is no easy task to dominate Cronulla on their home turf but the Titans managed to assert their authority from the opening exchanges. Michael Gordon was outstanding and prop Luke Douglas set a new NRL record playing his 195th successive NRL match. There were pleasing signs in this win for coach John Cartwright. The Tigers’ injury curse is back in business in 2014. They started the match without Keith Galloway, Tim Moltzen, Dene Halatau, Curtis Sironen, Tim Simona, David Nofoaluma and Mitchell Moses and lost Liam Fulton to friendly fire after a collision with a team-mate left him concussed. The Tigers were under siege and never looked likely to get on top of the Dragons going down 44-24 in a disappointing season opener. On that performance it his hard to have them here and the Titans should bank another two points.
KNIGHTS v RAIDERS THE game between the Knights and Panthers was one of attrition for the Novocastrians. The Knights had more injuries than you would find in a casualty ward following the game. They will feel the loss of Darius Boyd who lasted just 15 minutes before succumbing to a hamstring strain and looks likely to be out for several weeks. Gidley and Tyrone Roberts left the field after head knocks and the Panthers pounced. Those players left on the field did their best and probably did not deserve the 30-8 score line. Bennett faces an uphill battle to get a competitive team on the paddock this weekend against the Raiders who will be smarting after letting a 16-0 lead and a win slip away from them in Townsville. As we have seen before from Canberra there were flashes of brilliance an moments of madness. Think Ricky’s boys can post their first win here for the Raiders prodigal son. BULLDOGS v SHARKS ROUND two wraps up with the clash of the Bulldogs and Sharks at ANZ. The Dogs were sent back to their kennel with their tails between their legs after Brisbane proved tougher than many expected. The Sharks’ horror run continues after a serious injury to captain Paul Gallen in their opening encounter. Gallen left the ground in a moon boot and on crutches last Monday night and is facing a lengthy time on the sideline that may even impact on State of Origin. His loss is a major blow to an already reeling Cronulla. The injury overshadowed a great milestone for the club stalwart who moved past David Peachey as the second most-capped Sharks player of all-time. Cronulla are well and truly up against it and the Dogs should make amends for their loss to Brisbane.
1123917-CA11-14
ROUND one down - and if the upsets continue there are sure to be some tipsters requiring medical attention by the end of the season. The upsets began on Thursday night when the Bunnies made the Roosters look like feather dusters and continued until the Titans won at Shark Park on Monday night. The biggest upsets came with the wins of the “sure not to make the eight” Broncos; the bedraggled Dragons and of course the cellar-dwellers Parra who looked to be an entirely different side. Long suffering fans of the Blue and Gold can still be heard shouting alleluia. Some wins were good, some bad and some downright ugly. We saw season altering injuries, trips to the judiciary and confusion over new rules everything a league fan could wish for. SEA EAGLES v BUNNIES BLUETONGUE Stadium hosts the Eagles and the Bunnies on Friday night. The Sea Eagles will be reeling after they blew a 20-0 first half lead against the Storm to go down in golden point extra time at Brookvale. Manly looked to be cruising with the score at 20-0, eight out from half time. An injury forced Brett Stewart from the field and he did not return in the second half. Manly looked like a ship without a rudder without him. It was an uncharacteristic capitulation by the Eagles after Foran and CherryEvans created early havoc. The Bunnies on the other hand could not have been more impressive. Greg Inglis looked fit and if possible bigger and stronger and equally, if not more dangerous, than ever in game one. Sam Burgess looks like a man determined to make his mark before he exits stage right. The Rabbitohs dominated and ran the Roosters ragged although there were passages of scrappy

WHEN watching a world sporting event, or any sport for that matter, it can be a bit like the duck on the pond - all smooth sailing along while underneath it is paddling like crazy to keep going. That would have been exactly what it was like for South African cricket captain Graeme Smith as he strode purposefully to the wicket on the final day of the last Test against the Aussies knowing that the curtain was about to come down on his illustrious career. Not that it would have mattered a great deal to him at the time. He had only earlier left the hospital bedside of his young daughter who had suffered serious burns from hot water during the second Test. His daughter Cadence went to surgery at 8am on the last morning of the Test and Smith, who had been with his wife and daughter, was back at Newlands to resume the innings at 10am. Smith retired as the most capped Test captain in history. He had 9262 Test runs at an average of 48.49 including 27 Test centuries and 38 half centuries. He captained the Proteas for 12 years from the age of 22. When he took over, South Africa was known as a group of chokers. Smith took them to the top of the tree, the best in the world, but his effort in that last Test, given what he was going through, was, to my mind, his finest hour. There is a lesson for all of us as couch experts - we never know just what is going on under the water. - Casey GOLF WORLD EVENT BIG SUCCESS THE Stanthorpe Golf Club got the Apple and Grape Harvest Festival off to a great start last Friday with a good field of locals and visitors taking to the fairways in the traditional 4BBB Stableford, which is sponsored by Golf World. Local golfer Ian Harvey combined with Inglewood visitor John Slack to card 50 points for the round which gave them a two-point advantage over three teams on 48. The countback went the way of Kev Rowling and Keith Green who had the best back nine. Greg Fraser played a great tee shot at 3/12 and collected the men’s pin and Kay Webb took the ladies’ approach shot at the same hole. Don Spencer had the best shot at 17 and Lyn
Ludlow the ladies’ approach shot. Long drives on offer were won by Matt Nipperess and Ian Anderson in the men’s division and Rachel Hendry and Tric Fittock in the ladies’ division. In the run down, David McPaul and Henry Kelly (48), Trevor and Lyn Ludlow (48) and Lyle Bryant and Angelo Maugeri each went home with a prize. After the big A&G weekend things return to normal somewhat in Stanthorpe this weekend and Stanthorpe Golf Club is holding a single stroke event and also the second round of the Pike Trophy which is played over three stroke rounds with the best two to count. The day is sponsored by three of the women golfers - Kay Webb, Linda Kelly and Margie Locke. Linda and Margie are currently in the casualty ward on the injured list and are both wished a speedy recovery. After round one of the Pike Trophy there are 12 players with a score of nett 70 or better so there is sure to be some interesting developments after Saturday. HEALTH CHECK - FISH STYLE TWO officers from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) recently conducted a survey of the Condamine River and Leslie Dam to identify any pest species of fish and carry out a health check on the native fish populations. Driving a specially fitted-out electro fishing boat, Keith Chilcott and Andrew Norris measured, counted and weighed stunned fish as they rose to the surface. The pair spent two days surveying the Condamine River and one day at Leslie Dam. A diverse range of healthy native fish including Murray cod, golden and silver perch, catfish, rainbow fish, gudgeons, hardiheads, smelt, bony bream and spangled perch were given the once over. A range of pest fish was also discovered and included European carp, gambusia and a pearl cichlid, a prolific mouth brooder which holds its young in its mouth. There is no doubt the cichlid would have found its way into the Condamine after someone grew tired of their home fish tank and emptied it into the river. The better option would have been to humanely destroy the fish and bury it so that local waterways do not come under threat. The prolific breeding tilapia poses a big risk to the Condamine River and dams. They easily adapt to a range of habitats and conditions and their aggressive competition for food chases away the native fish. If anglers catch or sight a fish that could be a tilapia, they should take a photo if possible and phone the Queensland Fisheries hotline on 13 25 23 to report the location. Of course, the fish should not be returned to the water.
WALLANGARRA RAMS THE Wallangarra Rams have spent a great deal of time and effort to bring their once maligned football field up to scratch this season. The field has been levelled, re-measured and seeded. Fortunately for club officials they have received enough rain, that elusive stuff that falls from the sky to kick-start the grass which is growing nicely. They have only recently received a grant to light their oval to improve training conditions. However, with some players moving on and some retiring they are looking for players to bolster their numbers this season. It seems there is an abundance of players in
some clubs and others struggle and I guess there is little officials can do about that situation other than to encourage some players to look at the Rams as an option for this season. Those who are interested in signing with them can jump on their website or Facebook page for more details. PERFECT CONDITIONS, SMALL FIELD THE Red Rooster Rumble was held in near perfect conditions last Friday but only attracted a small field of 18 players. Les Lane showed good form to win the event with a score of 25 points and runner-up Judy Lester also had the same score. Run downs went to Doug Wilson while Mark Coote collected pins on 11 and 16 and Mick Banks had success at 13.

This male pearl cichlid was recently captured in the Condamine River near The Rockies, east of the weir at Scots College. The fish is a South American mouth-brooder which holds its young in its mouth. It poses a great risk to waterways and fish population. 116670

Local Sport WATTO TO CAPTAIN ROYALS INJURY prone Australian all-rounder Shane Watson was earlier this week named the new captain of the Rajasthan Royals franchise in the upcoming Indian Premier League. Watson follows in the footsteps of former Indian captain Rahul Dravid, who retired from all forms of the game last year, and Aussie legend Shane Warne. Dravid will be involved in the team in a mentoring role and has endorsed Watson as the man for the job. Watson, who was demoted from his spot as vice-captain of the Australian side, has long been seen by many as having all of the necessary leadership skills to succeed as a captain. Dravid said the Aussie all-rounder “truly embodies the daring spirit and has the ability to execute his skills under pressure cooker situations”. Can’t deny that - Watson has never had an easy ride in the Aussie team. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS THE Horse and Jockey sponsored the third round of the Warwick Golf Club championships played last Saturday. Junior Sam McLennan was declared the winner after a countback. He and runner-up Brandon Jones both finished the round with nett 62. Run downs went to 67. Pins were collected by Shane Reid (5 and 16), Charlie Morrison (7), Geoff Hinze (9), Keith Clark (11) and Craig Locke (13). The final round of the club championships were played on Sunday and sponsored by B and K Motors. Nathan Jones, with two under off the stick giving him a nett 62, was the winner ahead of Tim Sutton nett 67. There were run downs to 70 on Sunday with pins going to Ross Bell at five, Geoff Hinze 13 and Doug Ricket 16. Another club championship is done and dusted with some great results and some others best forgotten. Vets champion was Alan Thornton with a gross score of 318. Junior Champion was won by Nathan Jones (301). The C Grade Champion is Neil Carney (gross 353). Brandon Jones took out the B Grade championship with a score of gross 330. Club Champion was Nathan Dionysuis with a gross score of 292. Nett winners were C Grade Wayne Weidman (276), B Grade Keith Clarke (278) and A Grade Sam McLennan. Congratulations to all winners and the club thanks all the sponsors who got behind the event. This weekend events include Spanos IGA single Stableford, Saturday and a club fundraiser on Sunday. MARYVALE MADNESS IT IS shaping as a great weekend of cricket and cricketing father son combinations at Maryvale in the merry month of May. Latest to join the already impressive Q.C.C. crew are Phil Lucas who is hoping to commandeer the services of one or more of his four outstanding rugby playing sons - Ben from the Old Reds, Matt from the NSW Waratahs, Tom from the Australian 7s and Isaac the captain of the Queensland Under 14s representative team. No pressure being a member of that family but
can any of them play cricket? That is the question yet to be answered. Patriarch Phil played his first ever game of cricket at Maryvale 50 years ago around 1964. He is certainly in for a big trip down memory lane. FAO TRANSITION COURSES A LEVEL one first aid officers’ course has been set down for 29 and 30 March. Recent changes to legislation and NRL rules require current certificate holders to complete a required transition or reaccreditation course - this has also been scheduled for the March dates. All current FAOs are required to attend the transition course to be brought up to date with current national standards. Those who require reaccreditation within the next 12 months need to do the reaccreditation program because it includes the transition course. The venue for the March course is Assumption College in Warwick. BARRACLOUGH DAY AT SPORTERS IT WAS Barraclough day at Sunday Sporters. Greg Barraclough, who is now playing off the impressive handicap of one, was the winner ahead of runner-up Norm Steele. Greg Barraclough edged out his son Dylan to take out the best gross after both shot a great round of 37 off the stick. The pin shot at the third went to Rodney (Buster) Pettiford after he played a beautiful shot. Buster looks to have a real liking for this particular hole and on the fifth that young Barraclough, Dylan, won the pro-pin. Mick Speer and Don Carey nailed the meat trays and went home smiling. With all the A&G shenanigans over it is tee off as normal this weekend between 8am and 8.30am. NRL SHOWING INTEREST RECENTLY appointed NRL game development officer Jim Stevens has been busy since his arrival in the position. There have been development sessions in Warwick and Inglewood and visits to various schools with Petero Civoniceva to help tackle the issue of bullying. A total of 22 coaches from across Warwick and district attended a Broncos’ coaching update. A come and try day at Wattles Warriors Junior Rugby League attracted a big crowd of 60 plus children and 26 new signings for the junior club. It is great to see the NRL investing in junior programs in and around the region. This is only the beginning with more activities targeting those who are the future of the game in coming months. Expect to see Jim and his innovative and interesting programs heading to junior league areas in the next few months. NO FAVOURS GIVEN THERE is expected to be no brotherly love when the Warwick Cricket Association finals get underway this weekend. In the Reserve Grade competition, Allora takes on Allora Railway Hotel Rascals. There will be no need for Tom Morris to warm up before taking the field for the Rascals. He will already have played in the Under 15 grand final earlier in the day. He will join older brother Joe in the Rascals side while Nick will step out for Allora.
It will certainly be a busy day for the Morris family as both of the older siblings have a rugby league game to play in for Wattles’ Under 18s on Saturday. In a turn of events that few would have predicted earlier in the season, the Warwick Hotel Colts are straight through to the grand final after they were seemingly out of contention in the early stages of the competition. In the knockout final, Maryvale-Condamine is set to take on the RSL Diggers. JUNIORS ENJOY WESTERN ACTION THE junior shooters at Inglewood SSAA had a blast last weekend on the western action (single action) range. All adopted aliases - Ali Mare (aka Atlanta Bynon), Black Kitty (aka Mackenzie Bynon) and Apache Eagle (aka Devlin Redmond) - to get into the spirit of the event. Also busy were the benchrest boys and girls where Martin Unwin did best to take out the 50 metre rimfire competition. Filling the minors were Ray Dudgeon in second place ahead of Stephanie (soon to be) Dudgeon.
