Guess who’s got West’s best address A RECENT report proves what every Bacchus Marsh resident already knew – their suburb is one of the best to live in. According to the Top 100 Suburbs for Family Living report, compiled by Aussie Home Loans and RP Data, Bacchus Marsh ranks third as the nation’s most family-friendly regional postcode. The Brimbank suburb of Taylors Lakes was fifth in the nation’s top 10 metropolitan suburbs. Bacchus Marsh mother and businesswoman Briony Walker and her daughters Piaf and Eva couldn’t agree more with the results. Along with husband Sean Cartlidge, the family made the area their home last year and they haven’t looked back. “I always thought I would remain a city-slicker but I’ve changed my mind now,” Briony told Star. “We wake up with kangaroos on our lawn ... it’s not so busy and I feel safe leaving the kids to play in the front yard. ‘Hoons are idiots’ By XAVIER SMERDON STATISTICS from January and February show that of the 23 cars impounded in Melton, 65 per cent belonged to people who live in the municipality while of the 18 drivers in Wyndham who had their cars impounded, 61 per cent of them live in Wyndham. Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge told Star this was abnormally high. “What this shows is that they have a blatant disregard for other road users and people living in their community,” Sen Sgt Burbidge said.

“I’ve been to numerous fatal accidents and it is one of the worst things I have had to do as a policeman, and then we need to knock on the door of their family and tell them that their son or daughter has been killed. “They don’t seem to understand the repercussions of their actions. “It is time for parents that see their kids acting in this way to take action and to start acting like parents. “They need to be responsible enough to stop their children from taking part in these kinds of dangerous activities.” The figures also revealed that the

overwhelming majority of hoon drivers were under the age of 25. All of the cars impounded in Wyndham belonged to men and 50 per cent of them were under the age of 25 while in Melton 91 per cent of them belonged to men and 60 per cent of the drivers were aged under 25 years old. Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council said the figures showed hoons in Melton and Wyndham did not care about their own communities. “The residents of Wyndham and Melton are just fed up with this kind of behaviour,” Mr Giddings said.

“Not only is it annoying, but people are fearful that that one of these idiots, and that’s the only thing you can call them, idiots, one day they will lose control of their high powered vehicle and kill themselves or another innocent person. “These hoons are holding the community at ransom and they just have no regard or respect for the law or for the safety of their neighbours.” Both men encouraged family members or friends of hoons to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and report them.

Perfectly poised to perform at their peak Firearms By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO

arrest A 67-YEAR-OLD man was arrested following a firearms incident in Melton West last week. Police attended a Harkness Road address after two men and a woman were allegedly threatened with a firearm and shots were fired shortly before 6pm last Wednesday afternoon. A man sustained minor arm injuries and the woman sustained minor facial injuries during the incident. The Melton West man was arrested by police after a short siege. He is currently in custody and assisting police with their inquiries. Police believe all parties are known to each other. Meanwhile, two shipping containers were broken into in Rockbank and Melton West earlier this month. Police said bolt cutters were used on both occasions to cut the locks on the containers and power tools were stolen. The incidents took place between 1 and 4 March and other items including a clothes dryer, blinds and doors were taken. And earlier this month offenders threw rocks at Brookside College in Federation Way, Caroline Springs. Seven external lights and windows were damaged in the incident.

YOUNG people across the West will be affected by State Government budget cuts which have axed staff and resources from the Blue Light program, according to a Western Suburbs MP. Western Metropolitan Region MP Cesar Melhem (ALP) has said Blue Light programs in Footscray, Keilor Downs and Williamstown have been affected by the cuts. Mr Melhem said documents obtained by the State Opposition show Victoria Police has terminated a Letter of Understanding with the Blue Light State Council. As a direct result, dedicated full-time staff and resources will no longer be provided to the Blue Light program.

CASSIDY Clayton believes calisthenics is a great opportunity for adolescents to make new friends and be part of a welcoming community. The 14-year-old Deer Park resident trains at K&K Calisthenics in Ravenhall and told Star that since beginning training with the club she has enjoyed a fresh outlook on life. It is also a great way to boost confidence with Cassidy performing her first Avonde Solo Competition earlier this month alongside her peer Bianca Diliberto. “It was my first solo and I was a bit nervous,” she said. “But I went well and I would encourage other young people to give it a go. “Calisthenics is a very welcoming environment.” Coach Katie McGuigan said both performers have worked hard to develop their aesthetic skills, which are based on ballet movements, elevated movements, grace and poise. “They have both displayed positive attributes, such as perseverance, determination and a strong work ethic, which not only helps them in the world of calisthenics, but are commendable qualities in their everyday lives,” Katie said. And Cassidy is looking forward to performing in many more solo competitions telling Star she will continue to enjoy calisthenics for many years to come.

$1 million punters By XAVIER SMERDON MORE than $1 million is being lost on pokie machines every day in the western suburbs, according to the latest statistics. Figures provided by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation showed that the West was a hot spot for problem gambling. From August last year to January this year, $197,910,013 was lost to electronic gaming machines in the West. Brimbank was the worst of these suburbs with $387,284 lost every day while $253,471 was lost

every day in Wyndham. Melton residents lost $153,235 each day, Maribyrnong residents lost $147,838 and Hobsons Bay residents lost $133,766 every day. Director of Community Support Services at ISIS Primary Care Michael Girolami told Star that problem gambling had a significant impact on local communities. “Gambling becomes a problem when it starts to adversely impact on people’s health, wellbeing and economic relationships with friends, family and business associates,” Mr Girolami said. “At the extreme end of the scale people may

lose their homes or be imprisoned as a consequence of illegal actions they take to support their addiction.” Mr Girolami said problem gambling was prevalent in the West, which is home to three of the top 10 most disadvantaged municipalities - Brimbank, Melton and Maribyrnong. “Problem gambling can also impact the community through higher crime, family breakdown, depression, anxiety and, potentially, even suicide,” he said. Melton education era draws to a close By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A MELTON teaching stalwart has bid a fond farewell to her role as principal and is looking forward to the next chapter in her life. Kurunjang Primary School principal Heather Guillot hung up her boots last week after 40 years’ service to the teaching industry, and admitted she will miss her “school family”. However, she is pleased with what she has achieved in the past four decades. And Ms Guillot has a long list of accolades to be proud of, but it is the relationships she has forged with families that are her greatest achievements. “One of the biggest joys is seeing people down the street that you know or have taught and you hear what they are doing now,” Ms Guillot told Star. “Teaching is a very satisfying and enriching experience ... you are a tiny part of that child’s life.” Ms Guillot began her teaching career at Melton West Primary School, where she worked from 1978 to 1982 and then moved to Melton South Primary School in 1988, where she became the first female government primary school principal in Melton. In 2000, she took up the principal position at Kurunjang Primary School and never looked back. “I have watched Melton grow from 15,000 people, unmade roads, no library, a ballot system for kinders, to the thriving city that it is now. “The city of Melton has always been very supportive of education and families, and I have students at Kurunjang whose parents I have taught from three different Melton schools. “I enjoy seeing previous students, hearing how they and their families are progressing with the great satisfaction in knowing I have been a part of their growth as young people and adults.” Now Ms Guillot is looking forward to travelling with her husband and giving back to the community that she loves dearly through a number of volunteer roles. “I’m looking forward to new adventures ... I’m not going to miss going to work, but I will miss the people and the contacts. “I’ve had lots of good things happen to me and now it’s time to give back.”

Crackdown on illegal pools By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON City Council will be coming down hard on home owners that have not properly secured their pool and spa. The council is undertaking a pool and spa audit across the city to identify and investigate private swimming pools that may not have a permit or safety barriers. All swimming pools and spas that are deeper than 30cm, regardless of when they were installed, are required to have a permit and a legally compliant safety barrier. If a property is identified as potentially being non-compliant, a letter from the council will be sent to the owner with a proposed date and time for a council officer to visit and ensure the pool and barrier meet the current legislative requirements. If the pool and barrier are found to be noncompliant, the council will work with the property owner to resolve the issue. The council may take legal action if the satisfactory outcome is not reached. Melton City mayor Bob Turner said unfenced or poorly fenced swimming pools posed a significant safety risk and could end in tragedy. “Every year, there are tragedies, usually involving children, which result from backyard swimming pools not being properly fenced,” Cr Turner said. “Through this proactive approach, we are determined to reduce the risk, in particular to small children, and provide a safer environment for all.”

OPERATION Safe Family is coming to Melton, and residents are being encouraged to visit Woodgrove Shopping Centre this Saturday to take advantage of free number plate screws and professional child restraint fittings. Police will have displays offering crime prevention advice to members of the public as part of the event, which is run in conjunction with the City of Melton, Woodgrove Shopping Centre and other emergency services. An accredited restraint fitter will be on hand to install approved child restraints to cars and check existing restraints are correctly fitted. Members from Highway Patrol and the Family Violence Unit will provide advice, and there will also be a range of activities and rides for the kids, including a Team Looney Tunes live show. Melton Police Inspector Stephen Mutton said it was a great opportunity for the whole family to meet local police and get some important advice on how to prevent crime in their community. “I encourage everyone to come down, meet their local police and hopefully learn a thing or two. Everyone has a role to play in keeping our community safe,” Insp Mutton said. “The community can help police by taking advantage of this opportunity to fit one-way number plate screws, which will act as a deterrent to thieves and also by taking other simple steps such as always locking their cars and reporting any suspicious behaviour to police.” Melton City Council mayor Bob Turner said the event highlighted the important role of community safety within the city. “Community safety isn’t just about crime prevention and emergency management, it’s also about sharing responsibility for each other, promoting wellbeing, enjoying our surroundings and working together to improve safety,” Cr Turner said. By YASEMIN TALAT ENGINES will be revving as hundreds of car owners and enthusiasts steer to one of Brimbank’s biggest car shows next weekend. The fifth annual Car and Bike Show to Fight Cancer, organised by Deer Park business Independent Car Parts, will be held at Club Italia in Sunshine on Sunday 23 March. Independent Car Parts director Mehmet Islay said more than 400 cars were already registered to be showcased. The event is one Mr Islay holds close to his heart, as it combines two major aspects of his life: cars and charity. All proceeds will be donated to the Peter Mac Cancer Foundation, with over $30,000

already raised from previous shows. Seven years ago, Mr Islay’s mother Ayten lost her battle to cancer. During her battle, she stayed at Peter Mac where Mr Islay said she received great support. “This is our way of saying thank you for looking after our mum and making her last days with us comfortable,” Mr Islay said. This year, Mr Islay hoped to raise $20,000 with the help and support of his family, friends and the community. “The way I look at it is, in life you can’t always take and take, you have to give as well,” Mr Islay said. “This is my way of giving back to the community and people in need.”

Mr Islay said the legacy to his mother also celebrated her generous nature. “For me, it’s very emotional from the moment I turn up and see all the cars, I get goose bumps and I get very teary because it reminds me of why I’m doing this,” he said. “If Mum was here, she would be very proud” he said. “And it’s not only for her, but for all those who are suffering and battling through cancer.” There will be an array of cars on display from classics to race cars as well as food stalls and entertainment. By ADEM SARICAOGLU A PROMISING crop of top-age and draft-eligible Western Jets midfielders will be looking to make the right impressions in the TAC Cup this year. Corey Ellis, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Connor Menadue have all emerged as the early frontrunners to push for a spot on an AFL list come November. All four enjoyed a good run and played at least 11 games for the Jets as bottom-agers in the TAC Cup last year. Coach Torin Baker is confident the experience of 12 months ago will have a positive impact on his 2014 playing group and hopes it’ll translate into success on the scoreboard after scoring 10 wins in his first year in charge. “We were lucky enough to have a lot of bottom-age players play a reasonable portion of the year, and I think you’re learning all the time about what the requirements are at TAC Cup level,” Baker said. “For a lot of our players, I think they’ll be better for the experience just knowing what the level is and what they have to do to be able to perform well at the level. So that in itself is probably something that

should hold a lot of the squad in good stead for the year. “I think in terms of the results we just want to be super-competitive in every game we play and hopefully that will turn into more wins than losses for the year.” So far five Jets have been named as part of the Vic Metro squad, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Duom Dawam joining Duggan, Laverde and Ellis. Other Jets may yet be called up as the TAC Cup season kicks into gear from this weekend. While the obvious goal is to have some of his young charges get drafted, Baker will first be keen to see a number of Jets don the Big V in this year’s under-18 national championships. “Obviously you’d hope some players get drafted, but there’s probably a stepping stone before that and we hope that a lot of our players do get an opportunity to play in the national championships,” he said. “Hopefully from there if you can perform well at the national championships then it’s a fair chance you might find yourself on an AFL list.” The Jets last week announced Liam McMahon as their captain for the 2014 season.
