Meanwhile, pop-up fashion shows will showcase the latest autumn/winter looks tomorrow as part of Highpoint’s VIP shopping day, while Highpoint fashion ambassador Nadia Bartel will do two season style seminars this Saturday. THE Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) will block Footscray’s Moore St in morning peak hour next month to protest a 400 per cent increase in night truck traffic. The group plans to lie down on Moore St in their sleeping bags between 8am and 8.30am on 2 April, calling for night time and weekend truck curfews along the residential street. VicRoads truck counts confirm that night time truck numbers on Moore St have increased by more than 400 per cent since 2006. “It’s about symbolically reclaiming some of the sleep that’s robbed nightly by the sounds of the trucks that rumble down Moore St,” MTAG president Samantha McArthur said. “Basically, you’ve got trucks avoiding the City Link tolls as they access the Port, and they’re using what is truly a residential street as a short cut. “We’re trying to highlight to the government that infrastructure to the port is required - you can’t expand the port and increase container traffic without developing infrastructure. “We see time and time again, that
it’s all about making it work for the freight industry, and not paying attention to what the residents of the inner West might need.” Footscray resident Scott Adams lives near Moore St and said night time curfews were desperately needed, especially for young families like his. “It’s really beyond a joke and since we moved in, it has gotten worse and worse to the point now where it’s really hard to get a decent night’s sleep,” Mr Adams said. “We’ve got trucks barrelling down the hill at 60 kilometres an hour, then using engine brakes to slow up for the lights and I really do worry about how long we can put up with this.” The protest comes weeks after Maribyrnong City Council hosted a community forum about trucks in a bid to get some short and mediumterm solutions on the road. Staff from the council and representatives from the Department of Health, Environment Protection Authority and VicRoads were in attendance. Mayor Grant Miles said that truck traffic in the inner West was one of the biggest and most difficult issues facing Maribyrnong City Council.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES AN exhibition by a Victoria University researcher features historical hand-painted signs that were rescued from a Footscray demolition site in 2012. Dr Stefan Schutt has curated the exhibition, which includes an aerial map of the West with signs painted by the Lewis and Skinner signwriting firm from about the 1950s. It also displays job sheets, contracts, agreements and drafts for advertising signs, including one for Cadbury’s Bournville Cocoa. Dr Schutt has studied the history surrounding a pile of documents uncovered at a Footscray demolition site when he saw a 60-year-old invoice blowing down Whitehall St, Footscray, just outside his office at Victoria University’s Work-based Education Research Centre. “These signs tell us how old inner-urban communities used to live, shop, travel, eat and meet,” he said. The exhibition will run at VU’s Footscray Park Library until 17 April. 116589 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI

City’s festival focus By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council has cemented its reputation as the Festival City - and now plans to go bigger and better. The council last week endorsed its Festival City Policy for 2014-2017, which aims to build on its success by establishing three distinctive streams for festival funding and support. Over the 2013/14 financial year, more than 180,000 people attended festivals across the municipality, up 54 per cent since the council first announced its ambition to become a Festival City in 2010.

The council has made a concerted effort to organise a balance calendar of festivals all year round, and for the first time last year hosted a New Year’s Eve celebration including fireworks along the banks of the Maribyrnong River. Over that time, the council has also attracted a number of high profile festivals previously confined to central Melbourne, including the Melbourne Fashion Festival, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. This financial year, the council allocated more than $300,000 in grants to 12 festivals and events

AS ANY home buyer would know, the devil is in the detail - and the Real Estate Institute of Victoria is offering house hunters more information on their chosen suburb than ever before. The REIV has released new house and unit prices by suburb, broken down by the number of bedrooms within the home. The data reveals the price of a two-bedroom home in the City of Maribyrnong varied wildly, with prices reaching $602,500 in Seddon, $598,000 in Yarraville, $489,000 in Maidstone and $400,000 in Braybrook. Similarly, a three-bedroom house in Maribyrnong will set you back $717,000, or $644,750 in Kingsville and $610,000 in Footscray. REIV CEO Enzo Raimondo said the data would be an enormous benefit to investors and owner-occupiers looking to gain a more detailed analysis of the Melbourne residential real estate market. Mr Raimondo said that, in particular, buyers targetted larger homes in the suburbs of Brighton East, Glen Iris, Beaumaris, Templestowe and Prahran, along with a smaller group of suburbs further from the city - Ringwood, Mitcham, Berwick and Bundoora. “It seems families were focusing on these suburbs due to their affordability, and close access to important facilities such as schools and parks,” he said. “It (the data) provides owner-occupiers and investors with a window to the size of homes and areas that are attracting the highest median prices at present.” The REIV’s median house prices for the December 2013 quarter reveal the Seddon house median jumped 13 per cent from $650,000 to $733,500, making it one of the top 12 growth suburbs across metropolitan Melbourne. The increase has seen Seddon out-price Yarraville, which suffered a five per cent price drop in the last quarter to post a median of $705,000.

Rates street uprising By CHARLENE MACAULAY A GROUP of Maribyrnong residents took to the streets over the weekend in a protest against council rates. Members of the Maribyrnong Residents Action Group say they are appalled that Maribyrnong City Council has the highest residential rate fees on a Capital Improved Value basis out of all inner Melbourne metropolitan councils. The group plans to petition the State Government to review the mu-
nicipality’s boundaries and amalgamate all or parts of Maribyrnong with neighbouring councils to support more equitable rate charges and improved services for existing Maribyrnong property owners and residents. “We have compared our rates with those of people in neighbouring councils and in high-end examples, our rates are almost double those of residents with comparable property values in, for example, City of Moonee Valley,” resident Robert Wiatrowski said.
“We are the laughing stock of neighbouring residents who are asking why we put up with paying this much in rates relative to the mediocre services we receive compared to our neighbours. “Maribyrnong City Council, Melbourne’s smallest metropolitan municipality, has one of the most widely disparate demographic ratepayer mixes of any Victorian council as well. Fellow resident Brett Woods added: “The Maribyrnong munici-
pality as it stands is just too small, in terms of population and number of residential properties, to support a fair rate structure and provide a fair spread of services for all its residents compared to other Greater Melbourne metropolitan councils. “As a consequence, Maribyrnong ratepayers are being forced to bear high corporate infrastructure costs and expensive overheads associated with running a stand-alone council to service such a small, inner city municipality.”

Keep that club date with Effie, for laughs By CHARLENE MACAULAY EFFIE is looking for love ... and child support. And she’s coming to Yarraville this month to find it. The star of hit shows like Acropolis Now and Wogs Out of Work has had a big year after giving birth to daughter Aphie, short for Aphrodite, and now she’s looking for someone to bankroll her lifestyle. “There’s two goddesses in the one family now,” Effie said. “There was no man, I’m not a
lesbian either, but what I’m trying to say is that it was an immaculate conception of sorts - either that, or it was the public toilet seat that I sat on last April, I don’t know what happened, but it happened. “(Motherhood) is great. She’s my little toy, really. I was very nervous about whether she’d come out with a lot of hair, and she did - which I was thrilled about. “I’m a bit like the Kardashians, there’s an entourage of people that, like baby North has got, Aphie’s got
as well. I get involved, but I’m not going to do the ugly stuff, am I? I’m not completely domesticated. “When I say love, the o is a dollar symbol - a bit like Kesha before she changed it back. “We know what chicks want, they want a black AMEX, wanna be able to buy their stuff, so they can look good and have fun, and guys want to throw the leg around.” But don’t expect her to become one of the new Real Housewives of Melbourne.
“Well, how about that for a show. I think Jackie isn’t a psychic, she’s a psycho,” Effie said. “I do like Gina though, I know she looks full-on, but I really like her personality ... and I’ve not seen anyone do green eye shadow like she does. Some of the others, I wouldn’t pick them in a line-up, I couldn’t tell the difference between one and the other.” A Date with Effie is on 28 and 29 March at the Yarraville Club. Go to www.yarravillelaughs.com to book.

which tackles the problem of drowning in Vietnam by training adults as swimming teachers and providing free swimming and water safety lessons to Vietnamese children. “The drowning figures in Asia, and especially Vietnam, are pretty horrific,” Swim Vietnam founder Joanne Stewart said. “There’s been surveys done that suggest as many as 30 children drown every day in Vietnam ... our organisation
has been set up to try and help the situation by starting swim schools and training local people as swim teachers,” she said. Swim Vietnam have taught more than 6500 kids to swim over the past six years. Paul Sadler Swimland became sponsors of the program in 2012 after founder Paul Sadler spent two weeks teaching kids in Vietnam to swim as part of a campaign by Water Safety Vietnam.

Prepare for new age demands LIVING alone at any age is not always easy and this is especially true for seniors. Seniors with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty and problems coping with the demands of everyday life than those without disabilities. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, every person has to address the issue of independent living as they undergo the aging process. At some point, they will no longer be able to do the things the same way they have done them in the past. Even if family members can provide care, older people may feel discouraged by this and worry that they may be a burden. For these and many other reasons, it is important for older people to begin planning for independent living early in life so they can live more successfully during old age. Save money and prepare for the future Once people have retired from work they will likely have a fixed income. Considering the essential items that they could need like medical care, assisted living supports and medications, they ideally want to be financially
secure when the time comes so that they can pay for their care. Family members and relatives may encounter some problems if they have to support financial needs. Start now with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet While still not that old, people should be more conscious of their health. Unfortunately, as people age, the chances of developing a serious illness such as heart disease, cancer, vision or hearing loss, or other conditions increases. While there are many who experience total disability because of certain illnesses or diseases, there are many others who are still strong despite their age. To lessen the chances of disability from the usual illnesses of seniors like dementia, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease among many others, they should start living healthy now and should try addressing their long-term health goals. Be aware of the services provided by reputable senior care facilities Not all seniors want to live in a senior care facility. Those who are strong enough and have no medical
complications can always live on their own. But if they are suffering from an illness or disease they have to be prepared and should start looking for a senior care facility that offers complete features and amenities. Apart from the physical care, they may also need varying degrees of medical care and assistance. Adult day care may also be an option. These independent living checklists can be helpful when making a decision. Enjoy doing the things you love Living independently is quite a challenge. In most cases, the challenge lies with emotions. It can be sad and depressing for people who live alone. As we age and spend more time alone, we may have a natural tendency to be sentimental. To avoid this, divert attention by keeping as busy and active as possible. There are a lot of activities that can still be tried and hobbies are also a way of being active. It also helps to have a pet to look after.
Living independently during old age can be a challenge but there are ways to ease into it.

Sport Still the top Dogs By LIAM TWOMEY A CLINICAL Footscray Edgewater has moved into the second round of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals series after smashing Carlton. The Bulldogs continued their good form from the home-and-away season, dominating both days of the match to seal the 144-run win. After losing the toss, Footscray was sent in to bat by Carlton at Mervyn Hughes Oval on day one. The decision paid almost immediate dividends with Bulldogs opener Anthony Barton dismissed for three while the in-form Travis Dean was also back in the sheds for two. With the score at 2/18, Dean Russ was joined at the crease by Dylan Kight and the pair set about steadying the innings. Kight and Russ added 82 before the latter was dismissed for 61. The wicket did nothing to unsettle Kight, who ensured the Bulldogs would post a strong total. He combined for another vital partnership with Sunam Gautam and the scoreboard continued to tick over, passing the 150 mark. Kight was eventually dismissed for a classy 66, the top score of the Footscray innings. There was no letting up from the
Footscray lower order as the total continued to rise. Gautam (41), Guy Walker (10), Jake Haberfield (17), Hamish Winter-Irving (21) and Lucas Dredge (10) all did their bit to lift the score to 9/252 after 100 overs. Thomas Smyth was the pick of the bowlers for Carlton, taking 4/82 while Ryan Sidebottom was also solid with 2/56. After their batsmen dominated day one, it was the Footscray bowlers’ turn to take centre stage on day two. They were led by the always dangerous Jake Haberfield who was nothing short of outstanding. Haberfield crushed the Carlton batting line-up, taking a stunning seven wickets for just 25 runs. The gun quick removed seven of Carlton’s top nine batsmen in what was his second seven-wicket haul of the season. With only three of the Blues’ batsmen making it to double figures, the target of 253 was never in danger as Footscray cruised to the victory. In other Premier Cricket finals results, St Kilda defeated Prahran, Essendon beat Ringwood while Geelong progressed to the next round after drawing with Melbourne.

West Newport in the box seat WEST Newport will be fancying its chances of claiming victory over Grand United in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final this weekend. After choosing to bat first on the Greenwich Reserve wicket on Saturday, West Newport used up the best part of 106 overs to post a first innings dig of 262. Solid knocks from gloveman Aaron Floyd (61), skipper Trent Jones (60) and opener Josh Eason-Jones (46) helped set the tone for West Newport, before Grand United was given 40 overs out in the middle to begin their first innings on Sunday. Two wickets fell late in the day’s play, and with day three of the decider coming up this Saturday, Grand United will resume their run chase at 2/55. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting grand final at Blackwood Reserve, the WLSC Marshalls are in a strong position against Melton Centrals after posting 289 runs over the weekend. Centrals is 4/138 in response.

Bowlers give Clubbers whiff of flag glory By ADEM SARICAOGLU YARRAVILLE Club will have its bowlers to thank if it can get up in Turf Cricket’s Senior Division grand final this weekend. South Caulfield sent the Clubbers in to bat at Crofts Reserve on Saturday and made the most of the bowler-friendly conditions, managing to knock Yarraville Club over for 169 in 81 overs. On Sunday, however, the Clubbers turned the tables on their old VTCA foe, gaining the upper hand to finish the second day’s play with South Caulfield clinging onto their innings at 8/108. On day one it was South Caulfield’s Shane Jeffree who caused all the headaches with the ball claiming 5/28, including the important wicket of Anthony Cristofaro for 66. But when it was Yarraville Club’s turn to have a trundle, an in-form Richard Sherlock came to the party and helped put the ledger back in the Clubbers’ favour. Sherlock came up with four of the eight scalps in the 61 overs so far played in the South Caulfield response. Also handy were Michael O’Keefe (1/12), Matthew Murphy (1/15) and Adam Contessa (1/23), while strike paceman and captain-coach Emmett Bronca remained tidy but wicketless in his 10 overs. Yarraville Club, who last week upset Greenvale to get into the decider, looked to be in serious trouble on Saturday with the bat at 7/72. However, with Cristofaro gaining form and gloveman Ben Tupper holding his own at the other end, the pair combined for 89 runs before the latter became Jeffree’s third victim - trapped on the pads for 33. Overnight the Clubbers were at 7/132 but by the end of the Cristofaro-Tupper partnership on Sunday, Yarraville Club’s innings looked in much better shape at 8/161. Coming into day three this Saturday, South Caulfield will be hoping it can put a significant dent into the Clubbers’ current lead of 61 runs.

SUNSHINE United faltered in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 grand final after choosing to bat against Sunshine Heights at Walter Street Reserve on Saturday. The innings didn’t start well as Daniel Raniolo was trapped on the pads for a duck with just four runs on the board. However, with the help of opener Daniel Pace (caught and bowled for 28), United managed to steady the ship and build solid partnerships throughout the day to end day one at 7/130. Day three of the contest will resume this Saturday. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 decider, a century from opening bat Leigh Wilson (115) has helped the Sunshine Druids into a strong position against Seddon at Hogans Road Reserve. The Druids lasted 122 overs in the middle to post 223 runs for their first innings dig, before Seddon got its turn with the bat on Sunday to finish the second day’s play at 3/62. THE Melbourne Knights began their National Premier Leagues campaign in strong fashion against Northcote City at home on Friday night, coming away with a thrilling 3-2 win.Six minutes in new signing Rodrigo Covarrubias got the ball rolling with his first goal for his new club, but the lead was lost a short time later. Covarrubias then doubled his tally ahead of the halftime whistle, but the match came down to the wire in the final 10 minutes. Trent Rixon equalised for Northcote City in the 81st minute but the Knights were then able to deliver the winner with a Marijan Cvitkovic tap-in. In the second-tier NPL1 competition on Sunday, St Albans began their campaign on a positive note in a 5-3 goal-fest away to the Springvale White Eagles, while crosstown rival Sunshine George Cross was a 2-0 victor over Brunswick City at Chaplin Reserve.

THE Footscray Cycling Club’s last criterium meeting for the season was held at Drake Boulevard, Altona in cool and dry conditions, with a stiff westerly which saw riders sprinting into a headwind. A Grade was dominated by an early breakaway of three, with Dom Dudkiewicz, Miles DaCosta and Brett Hickford quickly building a lead that proved to be too much for the bunch to bring back. Dudkiewicz finished the season the same way he started it by taking the win ahead of DaCosta and Hickford, with Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint.

Jets are top flight
Doghouse
By ADEM SARICAOGLU
KEVIN HILLIER
It’s official, he’s a legend DOUG Hawkins is now officially a Bulldogs Legend, as if there was ever any doubt. The boy from Braybrook was at the height of his football powers in the mid-1980s and anyone who saw his three games in the 1985 finals series saw an artist at work. Anyone who saw him in the rooms after that heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in the preliminary final saw that he really did bleed Red White and Blue. Doug deserves his place alongside E.J., Charlie and John Schultz the other legends of the club. Doug has always been a people person and has always given his time and attention to the people around the club especially the supporters and the football staff. I have had many great times with Doug over our 30-year friendship, he is a very special bloke and a great family man to Raelene and his three children. He is one bloke who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. A FEW weeks back I wrote that it would be great if the Bulldogs inducted Rohan Smith to the Hall of Fame at the same time Brad Johnson. I swear I had no inside information but I was delighted when it happened last week. The two were inseparable during their playing days and remain very close and both deserve to be rated among the greats to have worn the jumper. To play 300 games is a rare feat and a testament to courage, commitment, talent and dedication, qualities both had in spades and they are both decent, happy, well adjusted human beings. I know many people are excited to see Rohan’s son Jake follow in his father’s footsteps, as he looks very promising. The other inductee was John Jillard who played in the ’60s and was part of the 1961 Grand Final team. The Bulldogs open the 2014 season this Sunday night at 7.40pm in Perth against the Eagles. HOPPERS Crossing Football Club will be hosting the Good Friday Gift as part of its big clash with St Albans on Friday 18 April. The sprint will involve all WRFL clubs nominating one runner for the 100-metre race. Clubs will be asked to pay an optional entry fee of $20, which like all money collected on the day will go to the Royal Childrens’ Hospital Appeal. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize towards his club’s end of season trip. For more details contact Hoppers president shane.buckingham@porterdavis.com.au THERE have been some interesting clearances, with North Footscray resembling Hoppers from a few years ago with names like Clonan, Cavka, Borlase, Walsh, Hollingsworth and Iordanis lining up. West Footscray has done well with names like Michael Kennedy, Liossis, El Houli, Storey, Lindsey plus Damien Yze and Ryan McGhie giving them some real depth. Congratulations to Jason Cloke on being named captain of the WRFL interleague team with Tim Jenkins and Jordan Robbins vice-captains. Jason has been terrific since joining Spotswood and is a very good choice. A PROMISING crop of top-age and draft-eligible Western Jets midfielders will be looking to make the right impressions in the TAC Cup this year. Corey Ellis, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Connor Menadue have all emerged as the early frontrunners to push for a spot on an AFL list come November. All four enjoyed a good run and played at least 11 games for the Jets as bottom-agers in the TAC Cup last year. Coach Torin Baker is confident the experience of 12 months ago will have a positive impact on his 2014 playing group and hopes it’ll translate into success on the scoreboard after scoring 10 wins in his first year in charge. “We were lucky enough to have a lot of bottom-age players play a reasonable portion of the year, and I think
you’re learning all the time about what the requirements are at TAC Cup level,” Baker said. “For a lot of our players, I think they’ll be better for the experience just knowing what the level is and what they have to do to be able to perform well at the level. So that in itself is probably something that should hold a lot of the squad in good stead for the year. “I think in terms of the results we just want to be super-competitive in every game we play and hopefully that will turn into more wins than losses for the year.” So far five Jets have been named as part of the Vic Metro squad, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Duom Dawam joining Duggan, Laverde and Ellis. Other Jets may yet be called up as the TAC Cup season kicks into gear from this weekend.
Torin Baker will lead a promising midfield group of potential AFL draftees in the TAC Cup, which begins this weekend. 97935 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT While the obvious goal is to have some of his young charges get drafted, Baker will first be keen to see a number of Jets don the big V in this year’s under-18 national championships. “Obviously you’d hope some play-
ers get drafted, but there’s probably a stepping stone before that and we hope that a lot of our players do get an opportunity to play in the national championships,” he said. “Hopefully from there if you can perform well at the national championships then it’s a fair chance you might find yourself on an AFL list.” The Jets last week announced Liam McMahon as their captain for the 2014 season. The Hoppers Crossing product was almost unanimously picked for the role, and Baker is “super-excited” to have the 17-year-old as his on-field leader. “He’s a very natural leader and he just lives and breathes the organisation values and really drives the players to be better,” Baker said. “He’s a high quality person so he was quite an easy choice as captain.”
Western Jets 2014 Draft Prospects Corey Ellis
Jayden Laverde
DOB: 9/10/1996 Junior club: Keilor Position: Midfielder/ Defender Torin Baker says: “Corey had a fantastic year as a bottom-age player. His kicking and ball-use is really elite but we’re hoping that he can get his average possessions up around 25 or so per week. He’ll play a variety of roles from midfield to playing down back as well.”
DOB: 12/4/1996 Junior club: Keilor Position: Midfielder Torin Baker says: “Jayden has had an excellent pre-season. We played him more as a taller key position style player or playing on a tall back, but we’ll look to play him through the midfield this year. He’s a 190cm on-baller that’s got a fantastic attitude to the game and I can already see that he’s developing into a really good midfielder.”
Connor Menadue
Liam Duggan
DOB: 19/9/1996 Junior club: Spotswood Position: Utility Torin Baker says: “Connor’s been a real standout and probably the standout in our two practice matches that we’ve had. He’s got real leg speed and also excellent endurance and we just see him as someone who’ll be able to really run and carry the footy and be really damaging, so we’re really looking forward to see how he goes.”
DOB: 11/12/1996 Junior club: Bacchus Marsh Position: Midfielder Torin Baker says: “Liam’s had a fairly busy pre-season considering he’s had a week training with the Bulldogs as part of the AIS squad and also he’s had an AIS camp, but he’s got his fitness to an excellent level. He’s another player with a really high quality disposal, he’ll play through the midfield and we’d imagine that he’ll have a really good year.”
