from the State Government to install CCTV cameras at the station, but they had used them to deter illegal rubbish dumping throughout the municipality. “The State Government has offered funding for Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the past, which require councils and organisations to submit written applications. “Wyndham City has not applied for this funding as CCTV cameras would require considerable ongoing costs including monitoring and maintenance,” Ms Thompson said. WYNDHAM residents and community leaders have called for security cameras to be urgently installed at Werribee Train Station to increase public safety. It comes after Star revealed that on Thursday 6 March at about 4pm 10 cars parked near the station were vandalised, some so badly that they could not be driven and needed to be towed away. The damage was done before Protective Services Officers started their shift at the station and without any other witnesses. Angie Njoka told Star she felt unsafe at the station after she was hit by a man who stole her handbag last year. “I was punched in the face when he tried to take my bag and I wouldn’t let go of it,” Ms Njoka said. “It was late in the afternoon and I screamed but before anyone could help me he was gone. “I think if there were cameras here maybe he wouldn’t have attacked me or at least the police would have a better chance of catching him.” But Wyndham Council CEO Kerry Thompson said the council

Home grown hoons By XAVIER SMERDON HOONS in Wyndham and Melton are terrorising the very neighbourhoods that they live in, the latest police figures have revealed. Statistics from January and February this year show that of the 18 drivers in Wyndham that had their cars impounded, 61 per cent of them lived in Wyndham while in Melton, 65 per cent of the 23 cars impounded belonged to people who live in that municipality. Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge told Star this was abnormally high. “What this shows is that they have a blatant disregard for other road users and people living in their community,” Sen Sgt Burbidge said.
“I’ve been to numerous fatal accidents and it is one of the worst things I have had to do as a policeman, and then we need to knock on the door of their family and tell them that their son or daughter has been killed. “They don’t seem to understand the repercussions of their actions. “It is time for parents that see their kids acting in this way to take action and to start acting like parents. They need to be responsible enough to stop their children from taking part in these kinds of dangerous activities.” The figures also revealed that the overwhelming majority of hoon drivers were under the age of 25. All of the cars impounded in
Jim Giddings Wyndham belonged to men and 50 per cent of them were under the age of 25 while in Melton 91 per cent of them belonged to men and 60 per cent of the drivers were aged under 25 years of age. Chairman of the RoadSafe

“Wyndham City has used mobile CCTV cameras in illegal dumping hotspots on an ad hoc basis. These cameras are moved between locations and are scheduled for use depending on staff availability and the need for monitoring in hotspots.” Member for Tarneit Tim Pallas, whose office is located in Station Place where cameras would most likely be installed, said something needed to be done. “These acts of vandalism are disgraceful,” Mr Pallas said. “It is important for the Napthine Government to ensure commuter safety and security are top priorities, with rates of theft and assault at stations at a five year high.” Chairman of the Wyndham Transport Advisory Committee and former Wyndham Mayor, John Menegazzo said a feasibility study into installing CCTV cameras should be considered. “In terms of public safety, if the cost is workable then I think it would be ideal,” Mr Menegazzo said. “(Vandalism) is a major issue in the area and if CCTV cameras could be used to identify someone then I think it’s something that the council need to look at.” The Department of Transport was contacted for comment but they did not respond before deadline.

Don’t come and knock on my door WHEN the doorbell rings at 7.30 on a Saturday night you would think it is the arrival of your dinner party guests. Hang on, we are not having a dinner party. Who knocks on your door at this time of night? It must be the police delivering bad news. No, as I open the door no sign of a blue uniform or a badge or hat, just a bloke in jeans and a T-shirt with a very large folder full of stuff. After establishing he is flogging his own paintings door to door, I bid him a less than fond farewell and shut the door and return to my life. Earlier in the day a hyperactive energy salesman interrupted my first Saturday off in months. Suffice to say we did not exchange phone numbers and business cards. When I want to purchase something I go to the shops. I thought hawkers were on the way out, not judging by my weekend. What about you? KELLY Park in Synnot St is the venue for a new Farmers Market that is starting up this Saturday from 8am to 1pm. Felicity Ashman is behind the project and it will run on the fourth Saturday of each month with the aim to become an accredited market using the guidelines of the Victorian Farmers Market Association. Felicity and her people believe there is a lack of fresh produce in central Werribee and they want to see what locals can produce and what they think. If you want more information contact Felicity 0400 520 042. THE Australian School of Reflexology and Relaxation is having an open day. Hands up all those who knew this school even existed. If you are interested in learning a new skill and becoming involved in the natural heath care field this is for you. There will be workshops on the day and information on available courses. It is on this Saturday between 11am and 4pm at 9 Synnot St in Werribee and you can get more information at their website www.asrr.com.au. Werribee local Lyn Fava is the school principal and is very passionate about passing on the skills of reflexology. POINT Cook is not exactly a new suburb or the hardest to say or spell. Which made me wonder why my bank statement showed me making an ATM withdrawal from Piont Cook. Maybe if I had been at a bottle shop it might have said Pinot Cook. And I trust them to count my money. Westgate Community Road Safety Council Jim Giddings said the figures showed hoons in Wyndham and Melton did not care for their own communities. “The residents of Wyndham and Melton are just fed up with this kind of behaviour,” Mr Giddings said. “Not only is it annoying, but people are fearful that that one of these idiots, and that’s the only thing you can call them, idiots, one day they will lose control of their high powered vehicle and kill themselves or another innocent person. “These hoons are holding the community at ransom and they just have no regard or respect for the law or for the safety of their neighbours.”

Finn fires up over council storm By XAVIER SMERDON CONTROVERSY has erupted within Wyndham Council after it was accused along with a former mayor in State Parliament of trying to pressure one of its councillors to quit his duties as a volunteer firefighter. Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Bernie Finn, told Parliament last week that Councillor Glenn Goodfellow appeared to be under pressure to “either ease back his contribution to the CFA or get off the council”. It comes after Star revealed that Cr Goodfellow was one of three councillors to take a total of six months off from the council last year. Cr Goodfellow took 40 days off to deal with health issues and to work as a volunteer firefighter.
“Here we have a council which appears to be agitating for its councillors, in particular Cr Goodfellow, to give up their involvement with the CFA,” Mr Finn said. “This seems to be coming particularly from a former mayor of the City of Wyndham, Kim McAliney, who was defeated at the last election, and it is not hard to see why if this is her attitude to involvement in the CFA. “I do not know exactly what role she has to play in the council at this point in time, but it seems she has far more influence than is strictly necessary or indeed good for the council.” Mr Finn officially asked the Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell to step in and offer counselling to Wyndham Council. Ms McAliney told Star she was
Star’s front page on 18 February “dismayed” by Mr Finn’s comments, saying she supported councillors being volunteers but also said being an elected official in Wyndham was a major commitment. “I have the greatest respect for the CFA and all emergency service volun-
teer organisations particularly having chaired the City’s Municipal Emergency Management Committee for six years and being a recent graduate of the Australian Institute of Emergency Management. My grassroots stem from starting at an early age in a volunteer organisation for over 20 years,” Ms McAliney said. “Wyndham Residents need elected officials who are serious about representing the interests of the 200,000 residents who voted them in. The residents are relying on all eleven elected officials to be part the informed decision making process of our growing community and not be left to the dedicated few.” Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough hit back at Mr Finn’s suggestions, saying the council strongly refuted the
claims. “These comments have been made with no context as to how this council has allegedly pressured Cr Goodfellow which is irresponsible of a Member of Parliament,” Mr Fairclough said. “Kim McAliney has made no representation to this council regarding Cr Goodfellow and it is highly inappropriate for this to be suggested. Parliament is hardly the place for private matters to be aired. “This issue has not been raised with council directly, by either Cr Goodfellow or Bernie Finn - therefore it is disappointing that a Member of Parliament would use his position in such a way when other more important issues should be dealt with.” Cr Goodfellow did not return requests for comment.

THE Witch of Werribee knows how bad traffic congestion in Wyndham is. So early next month the woman riding a broom and wearing a big black hat, also known as councillor Heather Marcus, is hoping to spread this message of woe to people from the other side of town. Cr Marcus will be the highlight of the Race to the City, an event organised by Wyndham Council to bring attention to the struggles residents face every day when travelling to and from work. At 7.30am on Wednesday 2 April, 15 people from three different suburbs across Wyndham will drive, ride a bike or take public transport and battle it out to see who will beat the traffic and arrive at Federation Square in the city first. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough said while the race will be fun for those participating, the aim is to highlight the daily struggle faced by thousands of our residents. “While those participating in the race to get to Melbourne first have only their pride on the line, every peak hour thousands of our residents face the stress of racing to work by train, bike or car and spending valuable time away from their family,” Cr Fairclough said. “VicHealth data from 2011 shows 26.2 per cent of Wyndham residents spent more than two hours a day commuting, more than double the Melbourne average of 11.6 per cent.” Cr Marcus will complete the last bit of the journey on her broom in a move that she said it was hoped would help to grab people’s attention. “When you do a public campaign like this you need it to be interesting and exciting,” Cr Marcus said. “There is so much going on every day that you need to do something different to touch the right button and get people’s attention.” Cr Marcus said she was happy to be known as the Witch of Werribee for a good cause. “I want to make a point and I want people to sit up and notice Wyndham,” she said. “We have gotten to the point where the traffic and congestion in Wyndham is totally unacceptable.” For more information on the Race to the City visit www.getwyndhammoving.com.au

A WESTERN Suburbs politician has been criticised for being “out of step” with his views on abortion. Victorian Upper House Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Bernie Finn, who organises the pro-life protest March for the Babies every year, told Star that abortion was not acceptable under any circumstance, including cases of rape. “In this day and age, no I don’t think there is any acceptable reason for having an abortion,” Mr Finn said. “In years gone by when they needed to kill the baby to save
the mother then it might have been acceptable, but in today’s world I think that’s a very 1950s argument.” In cases where a woman has been raped, Mr Finn said an abortion was likely to cause more distress. “I think many rapists and particularly paedophiles use abortion as a defence, they use it as a way to destroy the evidence,” he said. “I’ve spoken to a number of women who have been raped and then had abortions and they told me that from their point of view having an abortion was like being raped a second time. “I don’t think abortion is
acceptable under any circumstance and I don’t see why we should be killing babies for the crime of the father.” But CEO of Women’s Health West, Dr Robyn Gregory, told Star the vast majority of the population did not support Mr Finn’s views. “There is no evidence to suggest that having an abortion creates emotional or psychological harm to women,” Dr Gregory said. “In fact, women that are forced into giving birth against their will experience a higher degree of psychological distress than those that choose to have an abortion.”

Dog donors required By XAVIER SMERDON DOG owners that would like their four-legged friends to become four-legged heroes are being encouraged to contact a Wyndham vet clinic. The University of Melbourne Veterinary Hospital in Werribee is also home to the Canine Blood Bank, a service which saves countless dogs every year. The blood bank, a not-forprofit organisation, supplies life-saving blood products to veterinary hospitals across Australia to be used to help sick or critically injured dogs. Dr Manuel Boller, head of the Canine Blood Bank, said they were currently experienc-
ing a shortage of donations. “Veterinary emergency hospitals use blood products routinely and we are struggling to fulfil that need,” Dr Boller said. “The contribution of pet owners volunteering their dogs to donate blood is of key importance. “Blood transfusions are such an irreplaceable lifeline for many injured dogs. We simply wouldn’t be able to save as many of these canine patients without this resource.” Dr Boller said the life of a local family’s beloved pet was recently saved by a blood transfusion. “Just recently we had a case where a very young Bernese mountain dog named Koda was
admitted with severe abdominal bleeding and literally collapsed on the doorstep to the emergency room,” he said. “This would have been a fatal condition without blood transfusions an arm’s reach away. Instead, seven units of blood and one emergency surgery later, Koda was able to return to her family the following day.” For a dog to be a potential blood donor they need to meet several criteria, including being aged between one and fiveyears-old, weighing more than 25 kilograms, and never having travelled outside of Victoria. For more information call 9731 2328 or visit vh.unimelb. edu.au/bloodbank/

Family set to run for a cause By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM family with a passion for sports and helping their wider community are coming together to help raise money to fight a debilitating disease. The Wattelet family, consisting of brothers Sebastien, Stephan and Jerome and their father Alain, will be running 21 kilometres when they take part in the Melbourne Marathon Festival. The marathon will help raise money for research into Multiple Sclerosis. The family was inspired to put their collective effort into
fund-raising for the marathon after a close family member was diagnosed with MS. “It’s just amazing how many people don’t even know what MS is,” Sebastien said. “So we’re hoping that by doing this we’ll help increase the awareness of it. “We were not even really aware of it until our family member was diagnosed, so now that it’s really close to home it has brought the family together.” The family has set a fundraising goal of $1000, with local politician and friend Andrew Elsbury already donating $250 out of his own pocket.

The Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival will be held on Sunday 12 October with participants able to choose to do a 10 kilometre run, five kilometre run or a three kilometre walk. The Wattelet family however has chosen to push their love of sport to the limit by running the maximum distance of 21 kilometres. The run will be held on the streets of Melbourne and will finish at the MCG. MEGA-EVENT L
Uni opens up doors By XAVIER SMERDON EDUCATION services in Wyndham have been given a muchneeded shot in the arm with the opening of a new university facility in the heart of Werribee. Deakin University and The Gordon Institute of TAFE created a new partnership to deliver the Werribee Learning Centre, which was officially opened last week. Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University, Professor Jane den Hollander, opened the Centre with The Gordon’s CEO, Lisa Line. “The South-West of Melbourne is increasing its demand
for higher education with a 30 per cent increase in students enrolling in university over the last two years and an anticipated population growth of 6.2 per cent per annum,” Prof den Hollander said. “It is our aim to provide pathways from school through TAFE and on to university and this centre will help build the jobs of the future in Melbourne’s West.” Professor den Hollander said that the new centre would give Wyndham residents the opportunity to study closer to home. “We know people tend to stay and work in the region where they study, so it’s im-
perative that we provide good pathways to a career outside of inner Melbourne and this is something we have been committed to since our beginnings,” she said. The new centre, located in Bridge St Werribee, will offer commerce, arts, business, science and early childhood education degrees from Deakin University. It will also offer a range of diplomas and certificate courses from The Gordon, including children’s services and construction. For more information visit www.deakin.edu.au

RAZOR’S Edge is a barbershop which is putting the “tradition” back into men’s hairdressing. It is rare today to find a traditional barbershop practising and keeping alive old skills such as razor cutting, neck shaving and face shaving. Suite event speciality QUALITY Suites D’Olive Receptions hosted a charity fundraiser recently to help raise money for a special little girl. Five-year-old Alexandra Miller is fighting a brain tumour and the Race for Alex charity fund has been set up to assist in supporting her family through this challenging time. The hotel’s manager Janette Godden said the day was full of fun activities to see and do including a jumping castle, face painting and a visit from the Melbourne Transformers, Optimus Prime and Bumble-bee. Quality Suites D’Olive Receptions, one of the region’s newest four-star hotel and reception centres, hosted the fund-raiser in February. The family and business ori-
entated venue is located on 10 acres of gardens opposite the Point Cook Coastal Park and includes a young olive grove. The hotel offers three impressive function rooms for up to 150 guests, informal dining at the Olive Grove Restaurant and 38 well-appointed suites for stay-overs. The function rooms with modular spaces can be adjusted and made available for conferences, conventions, weddings, private functions and performances. The venue is a ‘must see’ for couples planning a wedding or people searching for a venue to host a special event. The Chapel and Gazebo are both located a few steps from the main complex overlooking
the lake, with a clear view of the gardens. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner from a delicious Australian Mediterranean menu in the on-site restaurant. Guests can also unwind at the hotel’s indoor swimming pool and gymnasium. Quality Suites D’Olive will host Easter brunch on 20 April which includes a set menu and special visit from the Easter Bunny. For those looking to treat the lucky women in their lives for Mother’s Day, lunch and dinner bookings are available for 11 May. Bookings are essential. Visit 454 Point Cook Rd, Point Cook, call 8376 5300 or email events@dolivereceptions.com.au for more information.

With affordable luxury living designed for the active mature age adults who are looking for a lifestyle change, one of the many happy residents, Alan, said the decision to move into Palm Lake Resort Truganina “was easy with the many facilities we have. “I enjoy the swimming pool and I can go there as often as I
like without the worry of maintaining it and it doesn’t cost me each time I go. “I’m heading away in a few weeks and feel comfortable in knowing that my home will be secure when I’m away.” Alan agrees “there is a sense of community here that I like”. Residents can be the envy of their friends and family when they show them their very own resort style heated pool and spa, their very own luxurious air-conditioned 60 seat cinema

TARNEIT
THIRTY MINUTES FROM CBD FROM PAGE 1.
THIRTY minutes from the Melbourne CBD and minutes from the new Coles supermarket is Caraleena estate. This boutique 60-lot subdivision in the popular suburb of Tarneit will impress, the developer says, with its proximity to community services. Caraleena estate aims to offer a lifestyle of tranquillity for raising a family in a well-planned community close to shopping centres, schools, recreational facilities and public transport.
Stages one and two are currently for sale, with a limited number of lots remaining from 336 square metres to 512 square metres. Purchasers can secure their block from $158,000, up to $197,000 depending on size, with all lots now titled. A great range of lot widths are also available to suit all needs, from 10.5 metres up to 18 metres. A large number of families already call Caraleena home, with many more homes in various stages of completion. The Tarneit Road widening is also nearing completion, and Tarneit Railway Station
is scheduled to open in 2015. Caraleena is close to Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre and the Village cinema complex, and private and public schools including Thomas Carr College, Westbourne Grammar, St James Primary and Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. There are also several childcare centres in the vicinity, and hospital and medical facilities close by. Caraleena estate is at 590 Tarneit Road, Tarneit. Call Jacqueline Borg on 0409 506 914 or email jacqueline.borg@colliers.com at Colliers International for more information.

Seniors - Young@heart

A Star Advertising Feature
Prepare for new age demands LIVING alone at any age is not always easy and this is especially true for seniors. Seniors with disabilities are more likely to experience poverty and problems coping with the demands of everyday life than those without disabilities. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, every person has to address the issue of independent living as they undergo the aging process. At some point, they will no longer be able to do the things the same way they have done them in the past. Even if family members can provide care, older people may feel discouraged by this and worry that they may be a burden. For these and many other reasons, it is important for older people to begin planning for independent living early in life so they can live more successfully during old age. Save money and prepare for the future Once people have retired from work they will likely have a fixed income. Considering the essential items that they could need like medical care, assisted living supports and medications, they ideally want to be financially
secure when the time comes so that they can pay for their care. Family members and relatives may encounter some problems if they have to support financial needs. Start now with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet While still not that old, people should be more conscious of their health. Unfortunately, as people age, the chances of developing a serious illness such as heart disease, cancer, vision or hearing loss, or other conditions increases. While there are many who experience total disability because of certain illnesses or diseases, there are many others who are still strong despite their age. To lessen the chances of disability from the usual illnesses of seniors like dementia, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s disease among many others, they should start living healthy now and should try addressing their long-term health goals. Be aware of the services provided by reputable senior care facilities Not all seniors want to live in a senior care facility. Those who are strong enough and have no medical
complications can always live on their own. But if they are suffering from an illness or disease they have to be prepared and should start looking for a senior care facility that offers complete features and amenities. Apart from the physical care, they may also need varying degrees of medical care and assistance. Adult day care may also be an option. These independent living checklists can be helpful when making a decision. Enjoy doing the things you love Living independently is quite a challenge. In most cases, the challenge lies with emotions. It can be sad and depressing for people who live alone. As we age and spend more time alone, we may have a natural tendency to be sentimental. To avoid this, divert attention by keeping as busy and active as possible. There are a lot of activities that can still be tried and hobbies are also a way of being active. It also helps to have a pet to look after.
Living independently during old age can be a challenge but there are ways to ease into it.
Laverton Community Grants Community health and wellbeing grants of up to $20,000 are available for grassroots projects that are of benefit to the communities of Laverton and Laverton North. Preference will be given to applications which seek to promote healthy lifestyles, respond to issues faced by culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and children and youth; or seek to address matters of social isolation and mental health. Information sessions will be held at 6:00pm on March 19 and at 12 noon on March 20 at the Laverton Community Hub. For enquiries contact Naomi at npavlakis@swmml.org.au. To RSVP for the information sessions, email: events@swmml.org.au

The Three Tenors The minute I saw this gadget, I decided I had to get one for my husband, who simply refuses to go anywhere near a packet of spaghetti and a pot of boiling water, because he’s worried he’ll end up overcooking the pasta.

Fittingly called ‘Al Dente,’ these three Italian tenors will let you know when your pasta’s perfectly cooked, by singing to you when it’s ready! (no, I’m not kidding). You simply drop these little mafioso men into the water, and when the pasta’s cooked, they’ll break out into classic Italian opera melodies, including

shorts Tigers win in draw West Newport Sports
By LIAM TWOMEY
WERRIBEE and Altona played out a thrilling draw in their Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association qualifying final on the weekend. The result means Werribee progresses through to the competition’s semi-final because the Tigers finished higher on the ladder after the home-and-away season. For Altona, their VSDCA season is now over. In what looked like it had the potential to be a miss-match on paper, the top of the table Tigers met the sixth placed A’s at Chirnside Park, with Altona winning the toss and batting first. The A’s found it tough to score throughout their first innings with the strong Werribee bowling line up producing some of the most measly spells of the season. Heath Pritchard was outstanding, taking 4/14 from his 20 overs on day one. Pritchard’s figures also included 13 maidens. Not to be left out, Jonathon Burton (13 overs for 12) and Matthew Thomson (14 overs for 25) were also brilliant. Aaron Maynard was the only batsman to look comfortable against the quality bowling, fighting his way to 40 not out. Soon after, rain stopped play on day one with Altona at 5/70. When the match resumed on day two, Altona was on the hunt for quick runs as the A’s set about giving their bowlers a strong target to defend. The break in play did nothing to stop Maynard, who continued to look right at home in the middle.
in the box seat WEST Newport will be fancying its chances of claiming victory over Grand United in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final this weekend. After choosing to bat first on the Greenwich Reserve wicket on Saturday, West Newport used up the best part of 106 overs to post a first innings dig of 262. Solid knocks from gloveman Aaron Floyd (61), skipper Trent Jones (60) and opener Josh Eason-Jones (46) helped set the tone for West Newport, before Grand United was given 40 overs out in the middle to begin their first innings on Sunday. Two wickets fell late in the day’s play, and with day three of the decider coming up this Saturday, Grand United will resume their run chase at 2/55. Meanwhile in the WDCA’s A Grade Matting grand final at Blackwood Reserve, the WLSC Marshalls are in a strong position against Melton Centrals after posting 289 runs over the weekend. Centrals is 4/138 in response.
Wade McCall charges in with the ball for Werribee against Altona on Saturday. 116690 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI Arguably the competition’s best batsman, Maynard added another 52 to take his score to 92 not out. He was well supported by Lee Elmore who made 44 and helped lift the total to 5/163 when the innings came to an end. Werribee had 76 overs to chase down the score and the innings got off to a disastrous start. The Tigers lost Matthew Dean,
David Wolfe and Shaun Dean all cheaply to crash to 3/23. There was no letting up from the Altona bowlers with another wicket coming just eight runs later to leave the Tigers reeling at 4/31. Luckily for Werribee, gun batsman Tim O’Brien remained at the crease and was a rock at one end. O’Brien guided the Tigers through
the next 40 overs to settle the innings. He was eventually dismissed for 38 with the score at 5/85. From there Werribee got back in control of the match, with the club moving its way to 5/124 when play was eventually called off. In other finals results, Bayswater beat Box Hill and Oakleigh defeated Noble Park.
Footscray still top Dogs By LIAM TWOMEY
Dean Russ made 61 for Footscray Edgewater against Carlton on Saturday. 116688 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
A CLINICAL Footscray Edgewater has moved into the second round of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals series after smashing Carlton. The Bulldogs continued their good form from the home-and-away season, dominating both days of the match to seal the 144-run win. After losing the toss, Footscray was sent in to bat by Carlton at Mervyn Hughes Oval on day one. The decision paid almost immediate dividends with Bulldogs opener Anthony Barton dismissed for three while the in-form Travis Dean was also back in the sheds for two. With the score at 2/18, Dean Russ was joined at the crease by Dylan Kight and the pair set about steadying the innings. Kight and Russ added
82 before the latter was dismissed for 61. The wicket did nothing to unsettle Kight, who ensured the Bulldogs would post a strong total. He combined for another vital partnership with Sunam Gautam and the scoreboard continued to tick over, passing the 150 mark. Kight was eventually dismissed for a classy 66, the top score of the Footscray innings. There was no letting up from the Footscray lower order as the total continued to rise. Gautam (41), Guy Walker (10), Jake Haberfield (17), Hamish Winter-Irving (21) and Lucas Dredge (10) all did their bit to lift the score to 9/252 after 100 overs. Thomas Smyth was the pick of the bowlers for Carlton, taking 4/82 while Ryan Sidebottom was also solid with 2/56.
After their batsmen dominated day one, it was the Footscray bowlers’ turn to take centre stage on day two. They were led by the always dangerous Jake Haberfield who was nothing short of outstanding. Haberfield crushed the Carlton batting line-up, taking a stunning seven wickets for just 25 runs. The gun quick removed seven of Carlton’s top nine batsmen in what was his second seven-wicket haul of the season. With only three of the Blues’ batsmen making it to double figures, the target of 253 was never in danger as Footscray cruised to the victory. In other Premier Cricket finals results, St Kilda defeated Prahran, Essendon beat Ringwood while Geelong progressed to the next round after drawing with Melbourne.
SUNSHINE United faltered in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s West B1 grand final after choosing to bat against Sunshine Heights at Walter Street Reserve on Saturday. The innings didn’t start well as Daniel Raniolo was trapped on the pads for a duck with just four runs on the board. However, with the help of opener Daniel Pace (caught and bowled for 28), United managed to steady the ship and build solid partnerships throughout the day to end day one at 7/130. Day three of the contest will resume this Saturday. Meanwhile in the VTCA’s North A1 decider, a century from opening bat Leigh Wilson (115) has helped the Sunshine Druids into a strong position against Seddon at Hogans Road Reserve. The Druids lasted 122 overs in the middle to post 223 runs for their first innings dig, before Seddon got its turn with the bat on Sunday to finish the second day’s play at 3/62. THE Melbourne Knights began their National Premier Leagues campaign in strong fashion against Northcote City at home on Friday night, coming away with a thrilling 3-2 win.Six minutes in new signing Rodrigo Covarrubias got the ball rolling with his first goal for his new club, but the lead was lost a short time later. Covarrubias then doubled his tally ahead of the halftime whistle, but the match came down to the wire in the final 10 minutes. Trent Rixon equalised for Northcote City in the 81st minute but the Knights were then able to deliver the winner with a Marijan Cvitkovic tap-in. In the second-tier NPL1 competition on Sunday, St Albans began their campaign on a positive note in a 5-3 goal-fest away to the Springvale White Eagles, while crosstown rival Sunshine George Cross was a 2-0 victor over Brunswick City at Chaplin Reserve. THE Footscray Cycling Club’s last criterium meeting for the season was held at Drake Boulevard, Altona in cool and dry conditions, with a stiff westerly which saw riders sprinting into a headwind. A Grade was dominated by an early breakaway of three, with Dom Dudkiewicz, Miles DaCosta and Brett Hickford quickly building a lead that proved to be too much for the bunch to bring back. Dudkiewicz finished the season the same way he started it by taking the win ahead of DaCosta and Hickford, with Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint.

Jets are top flight
Doghouse
By ADEM SARICAOGLU
KEVIN HILLIER
It’s official, he’s a legend DOUG Hawkins is now officially a Bulldogs Legend, as if there was ever any doubt. The boy from Braybrook was at the height of his football powers in the mid-1980s and anyone who saw his three games in the 1985 finals series saw an artist at work. Anyone who saw him in the rooms after that heartbreaking loss to Hawthorn in the preliminary final saw that he really did bleed Red White and Blue. Doug deserves his place alongside E.J., Charlie and John Schultz the other legends of the club. Doug has always been a people person and has always given his time and attention to the people around the club especially the supporters and the football staff. I have had many great times with Doug over our 30-year friendship, he is a very special bloke and a great family man to Raelene and his three children. He is one bloke who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. A FEW weeks back I wrote that it would be great if the Bulldogs inducted Rohan Smith to the Hall of Fame at the same time Brad Johnson. I swear I had no inside information but I was delighted when it happened last week. The two were inseparable during their playing days and remain very close and both deserve to be rated among the greats to have worn the jumper. To play 300 games is a rare feat and a testament to courage, commitment, talent and dedication, qualities both had in spades and they are both decent, happy, well adjusted human beings. I know many people are excited to see Rohan’s son Jake follow in his father’s footsteps, as he looks very promising. The other inductee was John Jillard who played in the ’60s and was part of the 1961 Grand Final team. The Bulldogs open the 2014 season this Sunday night at 7.40pm in Perth against the Eagles. HOPPERS Crossing Football Club will be hosting the Good Friday Gift as part of its big clash with St Albans on Friday 18 April. The sprint will involve all WRFL clubs nominating one runner for the 100-metre race. Clubs will be asked to pay an optional entry fee of $20, which like all money collected on the day will go to the Royal Childrens’ Hospital Appeal. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize towards his club’s end of season trip. For more details contact Hoppers president shane.buckingham@porterdavis.com.au THERE have been some interesting clearances, with North Footscray resembling Hoppers from a few years ago with names like Clonan, Cavka, Borlase, Walsh, Hollingsworth and Iordanis lining up. West Footscray has done well with names like Michael Kennedy, Liossis, El Houli, Storey, Lindsey plus Damien Yze and Ryan McGhie giving them some real depth. Congratulations to Jason Cloke on being named captain of the WRFL interleague team with Tim Jenkins and Jordan Robbins vice-captains. Jason has been terrific since joining Spotswood and is a very good choice. A PROMISING crop of top-age and draft-eligible Western Jets midfielders will be looking to make the right impressions in the TAC Cup this year. Corey Ellis, Jayden Laverde, Liam Duggan and Connor Menadue have all emerged as the early frontrunners to push for a spot on an AFL list come November. All four enjoyed a good run and played at least 11 games for the Jets as bottom-agers in the TAC Cup last year. Coach Torin Baker is confident the experience of 12 months ago will have a positive impact on his 2014 playing group and hopes it’ll translate into success on the scoreboard after scoring 10 wins in his first year in charge. “We were lucky enough to have a lot of bottom-age players play a reasonable portion of the year, and I think
you’re learning all the time about what the requirements are at TAC Cup level,” Baker said. “For a lot of our players, I think they’ll be better for the experience just knowing what the level is and what they have to do to be able to perform well at the level. So that in itself is probably something that should hold a lot of the squad in good stead for the year. “I think in terms of the results we just want to be super-competitive in every game we play and hopefully that will turn into more wins than losses for the year.” So far five Jets have been named as part of the Vic Metro squad, with Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Duom Dawam joining Duggan, Laverde and Ellis. Other Jets may yet be called up as the TAC Cup season kicks into gear from this weekend.
Torin Baker will lead a promising midfield group of potential AFL draftees in the TAC Cup, which begins this weekend. 97935 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT While the obvious goal is to have some of his young charges get drafted, Baker will first be keen to see a number of Jets don the big V in this year’s under-18 national championships. “Obviously you’d hope some play-
ers get drafted, but there’s probably a stepping stone before that and we hope that a lot of our players do get an opportunity to play in the national championships,” he said. “Hopefully from there if you can perform well at the national championships then it’s a fair chance you might find yourself on an AFL list.” The Jets last week announced Liam McMahon as their captain for the 2014 season. The Hoppers Crossing product was almost unanimously picked for the role, and Baker is “super-excited” to have the 17-year-old as his on-field leader. “He’s a very natural leader and he just lives and breathes the organisation values and really drives the players to be better,” Baker said. “He’s a high quality person so he was quite an easy choice as captain.”
Western Jets 2014 Draft Prospects Corey Ellis
Jayden Laverde
DOB: 9/10/1996 Junior club: Keilor Position: Midfielder/ Defender Torin Baker says: “Corey had a fantastic year as a bottom-age player. His kicking and ball-use is really elite but we’re hoping that he can get his average possessions up around 25 or so per week. He’ll play a variety of roles from midfield to playing down back as well.”
DOB: 12/4/1996 Junior club: Keilor Position: Midfielder Torin Baker says: “Jayden has had an excellent pre-season. We played him more as a taller key position style player or playing on a tall back, but we’ll look to play him through the midfield this year. He’s a 190cm on-baller that’s got a fantastic attitude to the game and I can already see that he’s developing into a really good midfielder.”
Connor Menadue
Liam Duggan
DOB: 19/9/1996 Junior club: Spotswood Position: Utility Torin Baker says: “Connor’s been a real standout and probably the standout in our two practice matches that we’ve had. He’s got real leg speed and also excellent endurance and we just see him as someone who’ll be able to really run and carry the footy and be really damaging, so we’re really looking forward to see how he goes.”
DOB: 11/12/1996 Junior club: Bacchus Marsh Position: Midfielder Torin Baker says: “Liam’s had a fairly busy pre-season considering he’s had a week training with the Bulldogs as part of the AIS squad and also he’s had an AIS camp, but he’s got his fitness to an excellent level. He’s another player with a really high quality disposal, he’ll play through the midfield and we’d imagine that he’ll have a really good year.”

THERE aren’t too many people more qualified than Aaron Tymms to lead the Western Region Football League into battle. Tymms signed on as an assistant coach for the competition’s interleague side earlier this year, building on his already rich history with the league. The Albion great played more than 400 games across his WRFL career and captained the Cats to their 2010 premiership victory. After taking over the top coaching job at Albion in the off-season, the league wasted no time signing him up for the upcoming clash with the Southern Football League.
Tymms said he had been extremely impressed with the calibre of the WRFL squad. “It is going to be very tough to pick our final squad,” he said. “There are a lot of good footballers. I certainly wouldn’t mind coaching that side every week. “You can only pick the best squad. It will be difficult but I’m sure we will be able to put together a very strong group.” The WRFL and SFL are currently ranked fifth and six respectively of the metropolitan football leagues, with the winner set to earn promotion into the fourth placed spot for next year. “It is a massive reward for the guys,” Tymms said.
“I think we are in fifth spot at the moment. If we win we can get ourselves into the third and fourth group and a chance to play off for one or two the year after. “The boys are all very keen. If you play well on the day there is the chance to play for the Vic Metro side as well.” The interleague carnival will take place on Saturday 29 March at Visy Park. Also on the day, the Northern Football League and Essendon District Football League will square off while the Victorian Amateur Football League and Eastern Football League will go toe-to-toe for the number one ranking.

WERRIBEE HYUNDAI
1300 533 214 37-43 Cherry St, Werribee.
WERRIBEE City was handed a lesson on the perils of top flight Victorian soccer in its National Premier Leagues debut on Sunday. The Bees travelled the Ring Road to face the Cavaliers of Green Gully but were left stung after going down 4-0 courtesy of two goals either side of the break. Dangerous playmaker Osagie Ederaro capitalised on the Cavaliers’ possession dominance with the opener in the 37th minute, before Mathew Sanders doubled the buffer two minutes later. Eleven minutes into the second half Sanders was on hand again to make it 3-0, before Brent Fisher finished the job from the edge of the box to complete the 4-0 romp. Manager and technical director Nino Ragusa was philosophical after the game, telling Star his young charges learned the hard way just how difficult life in the NPL will be this year. “They have been warned and now reality has sunk in,” Ragusa said. “I was happy for 30 or 35 minutes but we’ve really got to find a massive improvement right across the board. “Against quality teams - and every team’s a quality team in this division - if we don’t nail it for more than 30 minutes, we’re going to get some nasty results.”
Werribee City boss Nino Ragusa said his side will learn from its 4-0 loss to Green Gully on Sunday. 100340 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT City is no stranger to the hazards of promotion having come from the FFV’s third tier competition in recent years. While Ragusa acknowledged the abundance of youth in his squad, he admitted it will take a little bit of time for his Bees to establish themselves in the NPL. “It was the same as two years ago when we jumped into first division. In the first four or five weeks the results were poor but they will learn from it - that’s the harsh reality,” Ragusa said.
“Defensively we were fine in the first 30 minutes. It’s when you cop the goal and young heads collapse - we need to learn how to cope with that. “We made changes but they read your game so well, so we’re really going to have to learn to be far better technically and far more unpredictable.” Werribee City will play Oakleigh in the Dockerty Cup this Sunday before hosting Hume City in round two of the National Premier Leagues competition at Galvin Park.

NISSAN Dualis drivers experience the world a little differently to the rest. From a higher vantage point on the road, they feel a sense of excitement and a broadened sense of possibilities. It’s hard not to admire the Dualis, a sleek but substantial form, with an unfailing ability to perform. Innovative, dynamic and stylish, this really is the vehicle for those who would rather get among it and experience life to the full. Along with the ST and Ti-L petrol models, there is also the addition of the new fuel efficient TS diesel hatch to the range. Owners can burn twice as bright every day and lead a life worth watching in the extraordinary Dualis. Whether travelling in the five-seat Dualis hatch or the seven-seat Dualis+2, passengers benefit from a raft of intelligent designs to give greater flexibility, space and comfort. The slightly longer exterior of the Dualis+2 belies the cleverly crafted third row of interior seats. Fold down the third row to uncover more free space. Both models give exceptional drive height and offer a reversing camera and satellite navigation as standard and a host of other little features to make life that bit better.
WH 18.03.14 S4
The Dualis fits into every family. A spacious interior gives room to move in comfort and the ergonomically designed dash ensures everything is intuitively at hand. The Dualis Ti-L includes luxuries such as heated front seats with double stitched leather accented seating and trim, and dual climate control to appease both driver and front passenger. The Ti-L also comes with rain sensing wipers and an intelligent key which allows occupants to enter the vehicle with the key safely residing in a pocket or bag. The Dualis Ti-L all wheel drive gives all mode 4x4 driving at the fingertips with a centre console dial that enables instant alternating between 2WD and AWD. Also while in 2WD if the vehicle senses a loss of traction it will automatically engage AWD to ensure the driver stays in control.
With a superior array of safety systems, the Dualis petrol hatch has been awarded the highest possible five-star ANCAP safety rating. Across the range, safety technologies are designed to assist in the prevention of collisions and to protect the driver and passengers should an accident occur.
