PRIME Minister Tony Abbott must clarify the future of Geelong’s NDIS headquarters - and its 300 jobs - in the face of growing concerns about its cost, according to the federal opposition. Anxiety about the centre’s future has escalated in the wake of the Federal Government’s budgetary review and former Treasury secretary Ken Henry labelling the national disability insurance scheme unaffordable. Shadow disability reform minister Jenny Macklin “absolutely” rejected
Mr Henry’s claim during a visit to Geelong this week. “The creation of 300 new jobs in Geelong is a great thing. These jobs must be created, and Tony Abbott should be doing more to give that assurance to the great people of Geelong,” she. “Australia cannot afford to not deliver the NDIS. It is an essential economic reform. A “launch centre” for the NDIS headquarters has been operating in Geelong’s Lt Malop St with about 100 staff.

A COMMUNITY park in Ocean Grove has to be saved for a second time, according to a new group. Save Ocean Grove Park Again formed at a public meeting last weekend after Geelong’s council backed away from taking ownership of the park. Trust for Nature assumed ownership of the park, managed by a local management committee, after the community rallied 14 years ago to raise funds to prevent the park’s sale to developers. Council planned to take ownership of the park as part of a proposal to build a $1 million performance space in the reserve. Save Ocean Grove Park Again spokesperson Stephanie Asher said members were “delighted” ownership would remain with Trust for Nature. “The people of Ocean Grove are thrilled that the park will con-
tinue to be managed by the community. “It’s a great outcome and we appreciate council’s decision to not pursue the transfer of land. “We expressed the overwhelming gratitude and appreciation from local residents for the hard work done by the (current) park committee members over the years. “We let them know there are plenty of people ready and waiting to help, not just for now but for the long-term.” A Save Ocean Grove Park Again Facebook page said the group aimed to organise meetings with Mayor Darryn Lyons, the park’s management committee and Trust for Nature. Ward councillor Jan Farrell said discussions would not continue without adequate legal protection for the park and the support of the community. “We’ve had legal advice that cannot guarantee watertight pro-
tection for the park and also been aware of community division over a possible ownership transfer.” Cr Farrell said council would continue to work with stakeholders to deliver the performance space. Trust for Nature commercial services manager Chris Cook said the organisation was no longer considering any transfer of Ocean Grove Park. “The Trust permanently protects important conservation land in Victoria in a number of ways and we assure the community that this approach would always apply to the park.” Save Ocean Grove Park Again has called a second public meeting for 2pm Sunday at Ocean Grove Primary School hall to canvass ongoing ownership and management of the park and the “status of the performance-space building”. HE’S one of Geelong West’s most-colourful characters; a lime-green-and-orange-garbed harlequin peddaling like fury atop a miniature pushbike. With his wiry grey hair and whiskers protruding from a vivid green and pink helmet, Sebastian Flaccavento is obviously not the average 71-year-old. A familiar sight in and around the suburb’s car parks and shopping strip, where he works as a trolley attendant, Sebastian has a collection of tiny children’s bikes he rides as much for fun as fitness. Last year he rode the entire Around the Bay course in 13 hours as a septuagenarian granddad on a tiny treadlie without gears. “My boys all reckon I’m crazy,” Sebastian admits. “But many young kids think it’s great when they see me on the bike - they want to stop and talk, take photos. “I have to put the seat up high for some of the rides so I can extended my legs properly and I can get a sore neck looking up. “Some people ask why I do it.” The answer’s surprisingly simple. Sebastian’s been a competitive cyclist for decades, with gold and silver medals for veterans’ time trial and criterium events from Tasmania to Canberra. When he clambered aboard a tiny kids’ bike seven or eight years ago, the fun and funny side of it all had him hooked. “When I was a kid, back in Sicily, I had no toys whatsoever. I thought, ’Why not become a kid again?’” Sebastian generally coughs up $5 for his bikes at garage sales and recycling centres, lovingly knocking each bike into shape before taking to the road. “Sometimes people say I’m funny, sometimes they say I’m an idiot, but I want to do something a bit different from everyone else - I do it for my own satisfaction.” On a recent marathon ride around the Bellarine Peninsula dozens of serious cyclists tore past Sebastian as he laboured up the Portarlington hill. “They got to the crest and stopped,” he said. “They all waited until I reached them at the top and cheered me.”
MAYOR Darryn Lyons has led a delegation to Canberra in search of funding and investment. Cr Lyons said a new Yarra St pier and a $10 billion Land 400 project to build new armoured army vehicles were at the top of the list for discussions with Prime Minister Tony Abbott and other senior politicians.
Brawl charges POLICE have charged a 32-year-old Norlane man over a brawl involving soccer fans in central Melbourne. Police said the man would face charges of affray, conduct endangering serious injury, throwing a missile and carrying a dangerous article when he appeared in Melbourne Magistrate’s Court in May.
Speed changes STATE Government will cut 10km/h from the speed limit on 21 local roads and increase it the same amount on one, South Barwon MP Andrew Katos has announced. Mr Katos said the changes would make speed limits on busy roads “less confusion and more consistent”.
Obesity target GEELONG’S obesity problem has prompted a draft plan to encourage physical activity. John Irvine, who holds a sport and recreation portfolio on Geelong’s council, said the physical activity strategy was aimed the 53 per cent of greater Geelong residents who were overweight or obese.
Pipes lined BARWON Water expects to spend about three months cleaning and lining 1.4-kilometres of historic sewer pipes in central Geelong. Barwon Water said motorists faced lane closures during the work on the Mercer St pipes, which were almost 100 years old.

By NOEL MURPHY SOIL carbon levels in the Surf Coast and Otways are up to eight times the national average, according to the CSIRO. The CSIRO’s new map of Australia’s stored soil carbon shows rates of up to 230 tonnes of carbon per hectare through the Otways compared to the
national average of 29.7 tonnes in the first 30cm of soil. Researcher Dr Raphael Viscarra Rossel said the CSIRO now had a reliable benchmark to plot the impact of changes in land cover, climate, land management and greenhouse gas offset activities on soil carbon stocks and associated carbon dioxide (CO2) removal from the atmosphere.
The region hosted some of the largest soil organic carbon stores in the country, he said. “These larger stocks ... tend to coincide with southern states and regions fringing the coastlines, where wetter and cooler conditions produce more vegetation growth with slower decomposition and loss of carbon dioxide.”
Co-researcher Dr Jeff Baldock said the the high carbon content of the local soil could enhance farming productivity, inhibit releases of CO2 into the atmosphere and “help boost the capture of carbon”. “It offers a double benefit of increasing productivity and increasing the flow of carbon back into soil,” Dr Baldrock said.

GEELONG council had been “dismissive” over the Drysdale community’s unease at a proposed third service station for the town, according to its community association. Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association’s Doug Carson said a meeting that council organised with residents and development proponents was a “non-event”. The proponent did not attend and council officers only defended their decisions, Mr Carson said. The Independent reported last month the service station pro-
posal for High St near the Jetty Rd roundabout would include six double car fuel pumps and two truck pumps. “Council has handled it poorly. It sounds like it’s done and dusted,” Mr Carson said. “But I don’t know of anyone who is pleased with it. We’re going to send a letter to locals to give residents a chance to have a say. “People power can change the council’s mind and if we can’t then it’s a fait accompli.” The association’s blog said objectors to the proposal were told environmental and economic concerns were “irrelevant”. Bartel quietly reaches game 250 JIMMY Bartel doesn’t fit the bill of a high profile AFL star preparing for his 250th game. Something’s seriously missing. There was no swagger, no cockiness as the 30-year-old prepared for a milestone appearance in the Cats’ AFL season opener against Adelaide on his home patch. Bartel is the well-grounded local boy who plays down the accolades; he quietly acknowledges his achievements yet prefers to credit others for the glories of his team and how he escalated to become regarded as one of Geelong’s best-ever players. Nobody has a bad word for the former St Joseph’s boy whose talent was obvious when he played at Bell Park. The

‘Halt high-rises’ By NOEL MURPHY CITY Hall’s controversial highrise rezoning plans should be stopped in their tracks and the council’s legal war chest used to re-start the process, according to Belmont’s Lexie Butcher. Ms Butcher says she can’t understand why the four-storey planning rewrite that could dramatically change Geelong’s residential landscape has flown under the radar of many locals. The Belmont grandmother said remarkably few people knew about the C300 fourstorey planning revamp before it was “offloaded” by City Hall to an independent panel to adjudicate. “The changes are massive and will alter the unique live-
ability, heritage and familyfriendly character of Geelong forever,” Ms Butcher told the Independent. “Yet there has only been a whisper of the changes from the council,” she said. “Two public notices in two papers over two weeks is ludicrous and laughable. “Where was my letter with my rate notification last year?” Ms Butcher called for the rezoning process to be halted and started anew. “I’m serious,” she said. “A new process would easily be funded by redirection of monies council has allocated to hire lawyers to bolster the council’s arguments for C300 at the panel.” The C300 rezoning, brought
forward by the State Government, has been applied by city planning officers across large tracts of Geelong including Belmont, Geelong West and Newtown. A group of 60 objectors descended on council earlier this month to voice their concerns. Geelong MLA Ian Trezise has cautioned the amendment could become an issue at this year’s State election. Councillors such as former mayors Bruce Harwood and Stretch Kontelj have met with objectors, encouraging them to put their case to the governmentappointed independent panel. The Independent reported last week that City hall could be using lawyers to strengthen its case to the panel.

FORMER Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett believes that Geelong will rebound from massive job losses but families will endure some heavy heartache along the way. “There’s no doubt it will cause a lot of stress and anxiety, not only to those that lose their employment but also to their families,” the chairman of Beyondblue told the Independent. “I think people get understandably concerned and anxious because of a fear of the unknown.” Australian Workers Union secre-

tary Ben Davis agreed a fear for the future was beginning to affect workers about to lose their jobs but little was being done to help them. “People at Alcoa are becoming increasingly concerned, I can see it in their eyes,” he said. “I’ve lost count of the number of times I have been to Point Henry to talk with them over the past month.” The union chief conceded that many of the 800 people about to lose their jobs at Alcoa realised they would
never bring home such a significant pay packet again if they stayed in Geelong. Mr Davis said some workers would retire and their younger counterparts needed options but others with five or six years left in the workforce would be at a loss. Governments should start funding TAFE courses, perhaps on small business operations or helping trades workers to upgrade their qualifications, he said.
“When times get tough people expect the government to help.” Mt Kennett said Geelong had weathered tough times, especially during the Pyramid Building Society collapse in 1990 and would pull through. Geelong had progressed since Pyramid and was looking to the future under Mayor Darryn Lyons, he said. “People will find work if they want to find work, maybe not in their field of their choice and some will go to part-time - people should not become down-hearted,” Mr Kennett said.
Students hip-hop into their message of acceptance By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THREE Geelong schools have been ringing to hip-hop beats and rapping rhymes to spread messages of acceptance. The Stand Up Sisters and Brothers project particularly resonated at North Geelong Secondary College, one of the most multiculutral schools in the region. About 30 students were part of a workshop with members of Australia’s first hip-hop choir MASSIVE as it rehearsed for a public performance in May. The college’s Jonathan Morrison said students contributed music and lyrics while learning about performance. The program’s hip-hop style was “definitely not the doof-doof variety,” he laughed. “We’re using the genre as a means to get into the kids’ minds and make them feel comfortable with it. “We’re singing a whole lot of music from different countries and using a hip beat and a bit of rapping to make it speak the kids’ language,” he said. “It’s engaging the kids and taking them beyond their comfort zone

THE WINE sector’s prestigious Casama group is understood to have bought the troubled signature winery Scotchman’s Hill, sold by administrators PwC earlier this month. The Scotchman’s Hill group, owner of the Drysdale winery, went into voluntary administration last August. It posted a $12,000 loss for 2013 despite an annual turnover of some $15 million across 10 brands. Earlier reports suggested 30 jobs would be made redundant at Scotchmans Hill as the new owner took over the business. Workers given notice told media that fresh staff would be hired on a contract basis. The sale incorporated the Scotchmans Hill winery and
vineyard, wine-processing facilities, cellar door, inventory and the famous brands. Scotchmans Hill, started in 1982, grew to one of the largest and best wine producers in the region. An award-winning business, it produced around 160,000 cases of wine across a dozen different labels. The winery and cellar door were advertised as enjoying “stunning views over Port Phillip Bay to Melbourne”. The property boasted 49 hectares of vines as well as other land “magnificently positioned on the Bellarine Peninsula”. The land, on four titles, includes three residences. The sale did not include The Hill winery (formerly known as Pettavel) near Waurn Ponds, although there remains “a leasehold interest”. Casama did not return calls
placed by the Independent. The group is an Australian privately-owned family company and is the parent company of a collection of successful, independent trading entities. It has been involved wine industry brands including Shaw and Smith, Cloudy Bay, and Riedel from inception and responsible for the creation and sales and marketing of some of Australia’s most successful volume brands, such as Four Sisters and Preece. Casama maintains interests in grape growing, wine production, wine wholesale distribution, warehousing and logistics, wine exporting and importing, retailing and glassware importing and wholesale distribution. PwC also did not respond to calls by the Independent before going to print.

A MELBOURNE Cup field has been predicted to line up for the plum upper house seat to be vacated by Member for Western Victoria David Koch at the next election. Mr Koch announced his retirement after holding the seat for the last 12 years and acting as government whip in the Legislative Council. One-time Liberal candidate and now Geelong councillor, Stretch Kontelj, said nominations for the seat would be “hotly contested”.
“The seat is seen as winnable because David held it for 12 years and delivered great results and gained a lot of respect,” Cr Kontelj said. Cr Kontelj said he was not interested in nominating for the seat. “A few people have mentioned it to me but I am putting my full support behind (wife) Paula as her campaign chairman.” Ms Kontelj has nominated for the seat of Geelong for the Liberal Party, with pre-selection to be determined on Sunday.
“It’s going to be a difficult election campaign because she faces a margin of four per cent so she will have to put in above and beyond,” Cr Kontelj said. “But she is not without a chance because she transcends politics and is not known as a political person. That works in her favour. “Paula appeals to both sides of politics because she’s a clear thinker, good communicator and a champion of community causes during her 25 years in the media.”

I WAS shocked to read that the Veterans’ Affairs Minister and patron Senator for Corio Michael Ronaldson has ordered that soldiers’ orphans will have their welfare payments cut. They get just $4.06 a week, which is paid as income support that amounts to $211 a year. This smacks of double-dealing. On 10 February the Prime Minister, Mr Ronaldson and many other MPs attended the Last Post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial where the preamble included the following words: “We Australians have a deep responsibility to always remember the service of those that have paid the ultimate in defence of us our nation and our values”. The Prime Minister and his followers were nodding in agreement to the statement but just a few weeks later it’s alright to take orphan payments from the children of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our country. NOW THAT council has withdrawn its proposed takeover of Ocean Grove Park we can focus on supporting the park management committee, which does an outstanding job maintaining the reserve and planning for its future. The answer to the question of where is the cultural heart of Ocean Grove is clear and obvious. The park has been the town’s meeting place for decades and is where we celebrate together at community activities almost every weekend. A performance space is not a new concept for the park. It was planned and made part of the park’s strategic plan back in the ’90s and has been widely canvassed. The design was made public and was the subject of public meetings and a survey of surrounding homes. The response was overwhelmingly positive. The frenzy about the performance space’s size must be put to rest. The design takes up less than two per cent of the overall park area. The only town on the Bellarine Peninsula without a cultural centre is Ocean Grove, its biggest town. Some, like Queenscliff, have two. The lack of a community meeting and performance space in Ocean Grove is unacceptable. Ocean Grove Park is the community’s central and cul-

Following council’s decision not to accept the proposal, the park remains with Trust for Nature. We reject Cr Farrell’s assertion the legal issues could not be resolved - they were. The park’s financial holdings are $270,000. The audited annual financial statement is available on request. I hope future committees will treat these funds with care and consideration. tures have gone sideways - and not risen as predicted by consensus scientists. Let’s be clear about three things. First, no one denies the climate is changing. It has done so in the past, is continuing to do so, and will continue to do so indefinitely. Secondly, no one denies carbon dioxide is part of the atmosphere and has some influence on climate. CO2 is dubbed a ‘greenhouse gas’ but it’s not the major greenhouse gas. Water vapour is and it’s responsible for 97 per cent of the greenhouse effect. Thirdly, the sticking point is how much influence does CO2 have on climate change? According to the NIPCC, it has very little impact. It’s certainly not the principal driver of global warming. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant - if you can see it or smell it then it’s not carbon dioxide as CO2 is colourless and odourless. Before Australia goes and spends a king’s ransom on trying to mitigate carbon emissions, it should instead hold a Royal Commission on climate change rather than an inquiry on union corruption because what is at stake here is the spending of billions, if not trillions, of dollars of taxpayers money by 2050. Think of your grandchildren IN REGARD to published letters of opinion on climate change, I prefer to take note of the conclusions of world experts on the subject. A former NASA scientist James Hansen, reputed to be the world’s leading climate scientist and the world’s most-prominent climatologist, has made his findings quite clear. As in the following quote from his book Storms of my Grandchildren: “Already the air holds more water vapour than it did a few decades ago. The strongest of the storms that derive energy from water vapour - including thunderstorms, tornados and tropical storms - are becoming stronger and the associated winds and floods are becoming more extreme”. Mr Hansen’s words resonate powerfully in Australia where we have in recent years experienced the effects of more-violent bushfires, extreme winds, greater flooding, and tornadoes. Troubadour finds groove By MICHELLE HERBISON IT’S NOT often a folky singer-songwriter gets their audience up and dancing but Carus Thompson has mastered the art. Thompson quickly realised his ability to energise audiences with his solo guitar during his early days touring the country supporting the likes of John Butler, Xavier Rudd, Jack Johnson and Pete Murray. “I started doing it out of necessity but it started to become a real strength of mine,” Thompson recalled. “When you don’t have a band you’ve got to find another way to get the rhythm out of the guitar but more than that you’ve got to find a relationship with the audience. “People go to see music because they want to be entertained and have some sort of connection.” Thompson’s latest album, Acoustic at the Norfolk II is a return to his live solo beginnings, acting as a sequel to an earlier record that resonated with audiences and kick-started his career. “I did the first one about 11 years ago and since then I’ve had 11 years more of song-writing and three albums. For some reason it really hit a nerve with people.” Thompson recently gathered together
a band to again play The Norfolk Basement Lounge in Fremantle, this time showcasing his newer songs. “It’s a super intimate venue that fits 180,” he said. “We had some of the same guys playing, a piano player and my brother singing harmonies.” After nearly 20 years as a troubadour performing live around the world, Thompson said live performance came more naturally to him than the sterile environment of a recording studio. “It’s a different skill, playing records. I’ve only gotten good at it in the last few albums,” he mused. Lately his song-writing had moved towards storytelling and taking on different characters’ perspectives. “When you first start writing especially in your early 20s everything just comes out and it’s very raw, but as you get older, life’s a bit less chaotic,” he said. Idolising Paul Kelly, Thompson aimed to tell Australian stories through modern characters, avoiding the Australiana stereotype. Thompson will join a string of local and visiting acts including David Bridie, The Strange Tenants and Julien Wilson at Ocean Grove’s Festivus music and arts festival on 12 April. WHITE Eagle House’s new head chef and manager will be familiar faces to long-time regulars. Head chef Jodie Armstrong started her first part-time job at White Eagle House aged 14 and nine months, while manager Maria Versace previously worked at the club for eight years. Both are returning to their new positions after four year hiatus’, having been drawn back by the friendly and welcoming environment. “At White Eagle we consider everyone here family. We get on so well and we’re a team,” Maria says. Jodie’s business partner and mum, Lyn, has also returned after previously working at White Eagle House, now welcoming diners at the front-of-house with fast and friendly service. Completing the returnees is Lorne, much to the delight of patrons. Jodie is proud to be at the helm of the kitchen after working her way up through the ranks as dishwasher, waitress, kitchen hand and assistant chef. “I’ve worked for every person that’s had the lease. I remember when it was just a sports bar down the back - it’s grown a lot,” she laughs. Jodie has introduced a suggestion box to gauge customers’ feedback to help with improvements and updates to the menu.

COOKING, dining and socialising - these are the fundamentals of human enjoyment, and Geelong West’s 400 degrees has them down pat. And they do it with a twist, a healthy twist. 400 degrees, at the north end of Pako, features a remarkable Stonegrill Restaurant that allows diners be the “masterchef”. The stone is heated to a sizzling 400 degrees and patrons make their selections from prime offerings of beef, chicken, seafood and more - and do the cooking themself. “It’s great fun, absolutely,” says owner-manager Paula Leone. “It’s very interactive. We find people come in as couples initially then a few weeks later they’re back with four people, then for birthdays with larger groups to share the concept. “We have a lot of regular customer because of the fact you can control the way you cook - and because every mouthful is as delicious as the first.” The cuisine is healthy as all produce is trimmed of fat and no oils are added to the stone. Don’t fuss if you can’t cook, friendly staff at 400 Degrees are more than happy to assist. Mouth-watering steaks such as Eye fillet and Black Angus Fillet, Black Angus and Waygu Rump, Porterhouse are all on the menu. In addition to great steaks they also offer seafood,

Celebrity line up at Pirra Mansion Lino Bisinella’s historic Pirra Homestead will spring to life again on Sunday 23 March when thousands flock to the sixth annual Lara Food and Wine Festival. Featuring celebrities like Masterchef’s Matt Preston, Channel 9 presenter Catriona Rowntree and local singer Imogen Brough from The Voice, this year’s festival is set to be bigger and better than ever.
Lino is proud to donate the use of Pirra for this successful community event and applauds the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers who make it happen. This year’s festival takes on special significance as we celebrate 50 years since a young enterprising migrant started the plastering business that grew and diversified into Bisinella Developments as we know it today, the region’s largest local land development company.

Lara’s big day for gourmets smallgoods maker Angel Cardoso. Organisers said the award would be “affectionately known” as the Hamster of Lara, in a play on Mr Cardoso’s skills in ham production. Mr Preston, George Biron, formerly of SunnyBrae restaurant, and MoVida chef Frank Camorra will judge the award. Restaurateur cookbook author Rosa Mitchell will turn up the heat in a cooking demonstration, sharing plenty of delicious recipes with the audience. The festival features several competitions including best photo with a food and wine theme, cupcakes judged by a certified CWA judge, a critter competition made entirely out of fruit and veggies and a fruit and vegetable preserve competition. Festival goers can win a number of great prizes including a six-night gourmet get-away to Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. There’s also a Hide n Slide NEFF oven worth $2500 and meal vouchers to leading local restaurants on offer. Chefs competing this year are Leonie Mills from Jack and Jill’s Restaurant, Tulip’s Graham Jefferies, Matt Dempsey of Gladioli, Jan Solovic from The Empire Bar and Grill, Black Bull’s Daniel Brehaut, Darius Sarkis of Baveras Brasserie. Students Strive to be their best
BELMONT High School students are striving to fulfil their potential under a new school program. The Strive program for year nine students aims to develop their moral codes, self-esteem and respect for other people. Recognising their ability to learn and progress, Strive helps the students acquire skills to become “global citizens”. The program appoints a teacher as a mentor to develop pathways and map the progress of each student. Strive involves a series of activities, workshops and motivational guest speakers throughout the year, such as an adventure camp, volunteering at Barwon Valley School, job-application training and visiting Geelong Law Courts. The program takes its name from the school motto: Strive for the Highest. The program underscores the high standard at Belmont High School.

THE current generation Kia Optima was already a sleek sedan when introduced in 2011. It cleverly followed the lines of several European four-door coupe/sedans and everyone we spoke to about the shape at the time of the launch though it sensational. The addition of satellite navigation to the Optima SLi and Platinum models is a real plus. Mechanically, the revised Kia Optima continues to use a large 2.4-litre petrol engine producing 148 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. Balance shafts and careful design details keep out the vibration that would once have plagued a four-cylinder engine of this capacity. As well as the usual safety features that gain a five-star crash-test rating the latest Kia Optima has numerous systems to let drivers avoid having the crash altogether. In fact, Kia Optima now features many crash avoidance electronics normally associated
only with the upmarket German marques. The topline Optima Platinum has the greatest safety level, with Rear Cross Traffic Alert that monitors each side of the car when you’re reversing out of a blind parking spot or driveway. The new design of front seats are slightly larger than before and offer good support while cornering. Rear seat legroom is very good and four adults can travel in comfort, five at a push. Boot space is good and easy to load. Kia’s latest Optima carries high levels of equipment and it makes a worthwhile addition to the short list of anyone looking for a quality family car to step down a size from the current Holden Commodore or Ford Falcon. Prices range from the Si 2.4-litre petrol four-door sedan: $30,990 (automatic) to the Platinum 2.4-litre petrol four-door sedan: $40,490 (automatic).

The Magpies will now take on St Josephs, who went down to East Belmont, in a match up that many believed would be this season’s grand final. The Joeys batted first and paid the price for keeping one eye on the weather, managing only 150. Despite having the Lions 5/54, Becker Nguyen (45 not out) stood tall and guided his side to a memorable win with great maturity. That means North Geelong will play St Josephs at Stinton Oval. North’s form just looks too good to drop this one. East Belmont’s opponent will be South Barwon, after the Swans finally got over the line against Grovedale in a match that went well into Sunday evening beyond the scheduled finishing time of 6.30pm. At 7/108 chasing the Tigers 167, the Swans looked gone, but skipper Joel Davies (88 not-out) stood up just when his side needed him most. While South Barwon will be out to avenge last year’s grand final, East Belmont look to be in slightly better form, and with the advantage of playing on their
home ground, should replicate last month’s result at the same venue. In division two, Bell Post Hill finally put an end to Newcomb & District’s topsy turvy premiership defence with a five wicket win. The Panthers will play St Albans Breakwater, which despite going down to Marshall by five wickets last week, remain in contention due to earning the double chance. The Super Saints imploded and will need to sort out some serious internal issues if they are to get even close to a red hot Bell Post Hill. In this weekend’s other game, Thomson will be Marshall’s opponent after the Tigers ended Modewarre’s season last week. While Thomson have been one of the standout sides all year, Marshall have quietly flown under the radar, and having beaten the Tigers only a few weeks ago, have to go in favourites. Teesdale take on Bell Park in the division three first semi-final. While Bell Park got absolutely thrashed last week, they get a second chance. But Teesdale will be very confident after coming back from the dead against Corio to record an amazing one wicket win. In the other game, Shelford play Inverleigh, with both sides enjoying fine victories last week. Inverleigh’s form is impeccable and will be very hard to beat.
Gritty Warriors win first up clash with City By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors opened its 2014 National Premier League campaign with a gritty 2-1 win against Dandenong City. It wasn’t a performance that would have appealed to the purist but the determination to bounce back from an early hit is something coach Ante Skoko will be reminding the squad about throughout the year. North Geelong withstood an early barrage from Dandenong including losing young defender Michael Grgic with a groin injury. He was replaced by Robert Zadworny who took his favoured wide midfield position while Reha Kurul moved into the centre back position. With North Geelong unable to settle defensively, Dandenong took advantage and piled on the pressure, with Damien Miskulin assisting Keegan Ziada to open for the home team just on the 10-minute mark. This was the spark the Warriors needed and they levelled five minutes later from a free kick. Matt Townley sent a searching ball looking for skipper Michael Anderson at the back post but the ball eluded everyone and found its way through the Dandenong

Kingfish on the run at Rip LESS than ideal conditions have not prevented keen anglers from making some quality captures. Once the wind settled many chased kingfish from in and around the Rip area, with sizes ranging from a couple of kilograms all the way to a few beauties of 15 kilograms plus. Knife jigs are working a treat but in certain locations you can’t go past well-presented live bait, especially a slimy mackerel. Anyone looking to catch a kingfish should look to areas such as the bend in the channel off Point Lonsdale, Collendina or as the past few weeks demonstrated, close to the Portsea Hole. Looking for sheltered waters this week, Grant Holtz found just inside Swan Bay perfect and it didn’t take him long to attract a few good flathead into his berley trail, tallying six by days end. But it was the variety of species that made the outing worthwhile, snaring garfish, salmon, whiting, leatherjacket and gummy shark. Gummy shark have been a welcome capture for many of late. Darkness improves results but the addition of fresh bait will also see greater success. Fresh squid and slimy mackerel fillets have been the best offerings of late. One of the most sought after species of fish from within the bays are our flathead, offering great sport and equally great eating. Drifting the shallow grass beds, generally in two to four metres of water will see you catch the bigger fish but for numbers you can’t go past the deeper water off Queenscliff to St Leonards. Flathead are also readily available from the area between Clifton Springs and Point Henry, drifting while using

soft plastics gets results. Bait will also produce a few fish between the spoil grounds and the channel. Last week I mentioned the number of very small squid to be caught from the grass beds at Hermsley. This week Paul Jeffries collected his bag limit of squid and put them to great use catching a mix of both snapper and gummy shark from just off the Wilson Spit, his best snapper weighing 4.8kg and his largest gummy shark 10kg. Soft plastics anglers continue to pull fish from the outer harbour spoil grounds off Hermsley and Leopold, with current reports indicating the better captures coming to those fishing well before sunrise. Daniel Collier found the fish only too willing to bite from 5am but they shut down soon after 8am. No matter, the three snapper he kept all weighed better than 2.5kg. Seems there are also snapper to be caught on plastics from the Stingaree Bay spoil grounds, again the better results coming from the early hours of the morning. Troy Martin found plenty of fish around the 35 to 40cm size this week with the best lure being the Gulp jigging grubs. Trolling small diving pattern lures this week, Grant Holt found both salmon and pike close in at Bird Rock. GEELONG Cricket Club has proceeded to the next round of the Victorian Premier Cricket finals after its first final was washed out last weekend. Before the rains came though, the Cats were well on top, piling on 7/302 in a dominant display with the willow against Melbourne. Eamonn Vines (101) was the star, making a defiant century in more than four hours at the crease. He was well supported by James Crosthwaite (79) and Hayden Butterworth (60), with Geelong proving it belongs at the business end of the season. When the storm arrived late on Saturday, the torrential rain made the wicket unplayable, and despite an attempted mop up on Sunday, the game was declared a draw, meaning the Cats advanced. This weekend they contest the semifinal against Footscray Edgewater at the Merv Hughes Oval. With the Geelong batsmen at the top of their game, they are a huge chance to play in next week’s grand final. In the Geelong Cricket Association, six became four as Grovedale and Newtown & Chilwell bowed out to South Barwon and North Geelong respectively last weekend. Top side North Geelong thrashed the Two Blues with Jake Thorne making yet another century, before his bowlers went to work to record a 115 run victory.
