By YASEMIN TALAT A BURNSIDE resident will receive his second bravery medal for the courageous act of saving three people from a vicious pit bull terrier. Damian Simon Hall was driving along Westwood Drive in Burnside on 17 November 2011 when he pulled over to help a woman and baby who were being attacked by the dog. Mr Hall said he quickly reacted to the situation without thinking. “I saw it happening; I thought that didn’t look right, so I turned around went back got out of the car and did what I did,” Mr Hall said.

“I didn’t think I just did,” he said. Mr Hall grabbed a metal wrench and tried to hit the dog off the victims before the dog then turned on him. A passer-by pulled up in a ute to also assist, and the woman and child were able to climb inside safely with Mr Hall jumping onto the tray of ute to escape the attacking dog. Mr Hall then noticed a neighbour emerge from her house when the dog turned on her. Again, without thinking twice Mr Hall ran to the aid of the lady- holding the dog back giving her enough time to go back inside.
Mr Hall said it was at this stage he thought his life may have been at risk. “I was all spent by then and didn’t have energy in my own legs,” he said. “And I had to get away because it was hanging off me.” Mr Hall first received state recognition for his bravery in December 2012. The driver of the utility also received a citation that year. Mr Hall said his family were very proud of his actions and he felt overwhelmed by the recognition. But he was yet to see himself as a hero. “In my opinion, the heroes in the world wear the uniforms,” he said.
Mr Hall is now friends with the family, who are always thankful and grateful for his bravery. And they regard him as part of the family, he said. Connie Borg, also from Burnside, was the woman who was pushing her one-year-old grandson along that day when the pit bull attacked them. She received a national commendation for brave conduct this year for her actions in protecting her grandson. Mrs Borg immediately placed herself in front of the pram to protect him. She was clawed and bitten by the dog. The animal was destroyed under the order of Melton City Council.

Tailgaters beware on roads POLICE will be working in overdrive in a bid to crack down on driving offences along the Western Freeway and Melton Highway. The two major roads contribute to a substantial proportion of injury and fatal collisions reported in the Police Service Area. Along with speed, police
will be concentrating on tailgaters and drivers who fail to keep to the left lane when not overtaking on the freeway. The operation will be targeting specific times and days of the week where collision statistics show a sharp rise in the number of reported incidents. Drivers face fines of $217 and one demerit point for fol-
lowing too close to the vehicle in front and $144 and two demerit points for not driving in the left lane - unless overtaking or unless traffic is congested in all lanes. Melton Highway Patrol has so far this year impounded 12 vehicles for varying offences including excessive speed, evading police and improper use of a motor vehicle.

FEABEN Tefera has stars in her eyes - and rightly so. The 18-year-old Caroline Springs resident has become the first Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student to be awarded the VCE Top Class Drama. Ms Tefera, who graduated from the Braybrook high school with an ATAR of 91.35, has been selected to perform her solo, The Wartime Entertainer, at this year’s VCAA Season of Excellence. The Annual VCE Season of Excellence for Top Class Drama comprises A plus drama solos of the most outstanding VCE students from the previous year involving students
from government, Catholic and independent schools. “I am excited and thrilled that my hard work paid off; it’s a wonderful achievement,” Ms Tefera said. “We always thought Top Class was an East-side thing and it’s such an honour to be selected since I’m from the West. “My solo as The Wartime Entertainer is based on a speech from Dr Martin Luther King Jr and my approach was to represent the disillusionment of black soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War while they were discriminated at home,” she said. “My thought process was to display the struggles of the
character while establishing the political and social circumstances of the time.” Ms Tefera thanked her drama teacher Myles Collins for his hard work and dedication. “Once you find teachers who are passionate about their subject, you can’t help but want to please them,” she said. “When you’re surrounded by the right people - people that push you and motivate you - it’s great.” Ms Tefera is currently studying Arts Global at Monash University, and hopes to transfer to Arts Law next year. The Top Class series will be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 1 May.

Arrests after shots fired in neighbourhood Man hurt in train jump A TAXI driver who attended a call to a property in Jade Way in Hillside on 7 March was allegedly threatened by a male with what was believed to be a handgun. A police spokeswoman said no shots were fired and the driver was not injured. “It’s very much a fast-moving
and active job,” she said. Police said it wasn’t clear whether any threats were made or if cash was demanded. A 19-year-old male later surrendered to police and has been remanded in custody in relation to firearms and drug-related offences.
Meanwhile, in the early hours of 12 March, shots were fired damaging a neighbour’s property during a dispute between two parties. It is alleged that at approximately 5.55am a woman, known to one of the parties, approached the man with the firearm and was assaulted.
Police arrested and interviewed a 67-year-old man in relation to assault and firearm offences. The man was remanded into custody to appear at court at a later date. Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

POLICE have appealed for witnesses and information relating to an incident at the Diggers Rest Railway Station where a man jumped from a moving Melbourne-bound Metro train about 7am on 10 March. The male passenger activated the emergency release as the train slowed at the Diggers Rest Railway Station and fell from train. He received significant injuries to his legs and arms and was air lifted to The Alfred hospital. His injuries were life-threatening. Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley told media that paramedics found the man, in his 20s, lying beside the railway track. Police say there were only four people on the train at the time and none in the carriage from which the man jumped. Trains were suspended following the incident but have since recommenced. Clubs score active grants By ESTHER LAUAKI THREE Melton netball and football clubs will receive a much-needed funding boost to keep the community active in sports. Darley Football Netball Club, Diggers Rest Junior Football Club and Diggers Rest Senior Football Club are all part recipients of VicHealth’s $1.8 million Active Club Grants program. The clubs will receive up to $3000 each - making it easier for them to reach out to new participants and fund items or equipment that help to improve safety.

By XAVIER SMERDON SEVEN hundred police raided properties, seized weapons, drugs and stolen items across the Western Suburbs, including Melton last week in one of the biggest operations seen in the area. Twenty-four people were arrested after police raided 45 properties in 23 suburbs including Altona, Altona North, Williamstown North, Williamstown, Truganina, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Mill Park, Hillside, Keilor Downs, Tarneit, Corio, Melton South, Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights, Kingsville South, Point Cook, Altona Meadows, Albion, Cairnlea, Sunshine West and Maribyrnong. The operation, known as Sky-
borne, was launched by Taskforce Santiago following investigations into crime syndicates in Melbourne. Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police Stephen Fontana said people arrested were ringleaders and members of a “well-known Middle Eastern family-based crime syndicate”. “This was a high-risk operation, there was a number of individuals there that we considered to be extremely dangerous and we had the special operations group conduct three of those particular arrests for us and we had the critical incident response team conduct another three arrests, so we’re very happy that none of our members have been injured nor have any of the

people that have been taken into custody,” Mr Fontana said. “It’s a Middle Eastern crime syndicate, it’s a well-known family-based syndicate, I think you’d probably know the names of them and they will appear in court at a later time. “They’ve been involved in a range of criminal activities over the years, and particularly commercial drug trafficking and firearms trafficking.” Mr Fontana said police seized drugs including 100kg of dried cannabis, more than 12 firearms including a handgun with a silencer and a high-powered assault rifle, $55,000 cash, ammunition, vehicles and stolen property during the raids.
“The investigation’s been going since late last year into this particular syndicate. The commencement of the operation today, we basically went there with enough evidence to charge 19 individuals,” he said. “It’s been a real bonus in terms of what we’ve found at these particular addresses, so there will be additional charges and additional people charged as well, which was unexpected at the time. “We’ve charged a number of significant individuals that we consider were leading this syndicate. As you know when you take a group of individuals out there’s always someone to fill the void later down the track, so we’ll continue our investigations.”

As well as the physical benefits, research also shows that sport builds community pride and loyalty and offers people the chance to get involved, providing them with a positive sense of self-worth. “Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life,” Mr Nardella said. VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said sports and active recreation clubs in Melton are a great way for locals to get involved, meet new people and keep active for good health. The grants aim to encourage community members to join their local club, renew their membership, or continue playing their favourite sport, she said. A stitch in time saves minds

By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MORE than 16 years ago a group of Melton ladies came together to share their love of sewing, stitching and a good yarn and they have been enjoying one another’s company ever since. The Willows Quilting Group meets weekly at Dunvegan Cottage on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7.30pm and every second and
fourth Wednesday from 9am. And while the group do create beautiful quilted masterpieces, their weekly chats are just as therapeutic. According to member Anne Unwin, the social interaction is what keeps many women coming back. “It’s not a teaching group, we sit and sew, but mainly we chat. It’s a social event.” The ladies do take their
quilting skills seriously and enjoy making pieces for themselves or to donate to various charities. “Once you start (quilting) you can’t stop ... you look at fabric in a different way and it’s amazing what you can create.” This year the group has chosen Odyssey House as their charity of choice and are making quilts for a program the organisation runs with newborns to 15-year-olds.

BIG trucks are set to draw big crowds for the Caroline Springs Lions Club’s annual Truck Show and Family Fun Day. The annual event aims to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The community event will be held at the car park of Bunnings Caroline Springs on 13 April, with both organisations doing their bit to help raise funds for the Good Friday Appeal. Lions club committee chairman Dave Younger said he hoped the event would get
bigger and better each year. “We want to raise as much money as we can for the Good Friday Appeal to ensure that the Royal Children’s Hospital can continue doing the great work that they do,” Mr Younger said. “And if anyone in our community should need them, that they have the equipment to do their job to save the lives of the children,” he said. Mr Younger, who is a truck driver himself, said they expected 30 trucks to be on display at the show. He said crowds could look forward to seeing big prime movers and an array of working
trucks that could pass as show trucks. Last year the event raised over $6500 for the Good Friday Appeal and Mr Younger said they hoped to raise more each year. The Lions club is still looking for sponsors and donations to help with the raffles and auctions on the day. “We would just love to see as many people from the area and around show up to the event and have a great day,” he said. Win for Thoroughbreds By ADEM SARICAOGLU MELTON tasted victory for the first time back in Division One Big V basketball after beating Warrnambool in front of a home crowd on Saturday night. The Thoroughbreds got out of the gate in style to establish a 10-point lead by the first change. However, a secondquarter lapse brought the Seahawks back into the contest and by halftime Melton’s lead had been whittled down to a single point. Coming off a ninepoint loss to the Sunbury Jets seven days earlier, the Thoroughbreds stormed home in the second half and outscored Warrnambool 28-19 in the final term to collect their first win under the guidance of new coach Mick Downie. Senior assistant coach Julie McCallum told Star she was pleased to see Melton lift its tempo after a sluggish start to the season against the Jets. “It’s always good to get your first win, especially for the new boys on the team,” McCallum said. “We adjusted much better than we did the previous week, so we came out and got through our stuff and we played with a lot more intensity than I think we
did the week before. “It was lacking in the first quarter in game one and you can’t give a Division One team a 20-point head start and expect to come back.” Cameron McCallum was the top-scorer on the floor with 28 points and 14 rebounds for the night, while Jeff Crowe (23 points) and Matthew Jukes also drew praise from McCallum. Melton’s first road trip of the season will be to Mildura this Saturday before a tough stretch of games that will pit the Thoroughbreds against Southern Peninsula, Altona, Craigieburn and Warrandyte. The games against Altona, Craigieburn and Warrandyte will all be at home. McCallum said the focus for the coming month will be to produce a solid four-quarter effort that has so far eluded Melton to date. “We’ve got to stick to what works for us,” she said. “We go really deep but we’ve got to play for 40 minutes - and even against Warrnambool we dropped off for five minutes and gave away a 15-point-lead and let them come back.” Melton sits second in Division One’s Terrill Division after two Melton’s Cameron McCallum approaches the bucket during Saturday night’s win over rounds. Big guns fire up THE Calder Cannons proved too good for the Western Jets in the opening game of the TAC Cup season on Saturday. In typically blustery conditions at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, the Cannons made better use of the scoring end in the first and third quarters to break away from the Jets on their way to a 40-point win. Jets coach Torin Baker said his side needed to make more of its scoring opportunities count when the game was still up for grabs. “We thought there was a three-goal wind down to one end in the first quarter, so it was just disappointing that in the second quarter we weren’t able to convert a couple of our opportunities to make it a close game at half-time,” Baker said. “When you’re three goals down at half-time and Calder has the wind in the third quarter and it gets out to six goals, it makes it really tough for us to fight back.” In-form utility Connor Menadue was the best Jet on the ground, while team-mates Corey Ellis and Liam Carter also drew praise from Baker. Dillon Viojo’s work in the air and at ground level was also a highlight during the first half. “I thought Corey Ellis’s game was very good.
