Eight lives to go

Clubbing win SPORT western

By CHARLENE MACAULAY THIS pair of fearless felines has had a rougher start to life than most - and now they’re looking for a place to call home. Casper and Tiger were born early in the New Year and were found abandoned in a stormwater drain during the February heatwave. A crew of State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers were called out to Burke St, Braybrook, on 2 February to rescue the two kittens. “It was either a 41 or 42 degree day ... when we got there, the kittens weren’t

all that far down,” Footscray SES member Lachlan Stott said. “We pulled the stormwater drain cover across, and they were hiding in one of the corners and we were able to lean in and pick them up one at a time. “The rescue itself only took a couple of minutes. It was probably one of the quickest jobs we’ve ever had, but also probably one of the most satisfying. “We weren’t sure how long they’d been stuck in the stormwater drain. We offered them water as soon as they got out, but they were shaking from the stress and not at all interested in the water.”

The kittens, which suffered heat exhaustion, were taken to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital. “When the kittens were brought in, they were assessed by the vets and the initial thoughts were that one of them had cracked ribs, and they weren’t sure if he would survive, but lucky they both were okay,” Mr Stott said. “We gave them our own names, we called them Winky and Funky, because one of them winked at the other members, and the other one smelled really bad.” The pair, which were around four

Reaching out for the stars By CHARLENE MACAULAY FEABEN Tefera has stars in her eyes - and rightly so. The 18-year-old Caroline Springs resident has become the first Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student to be awarded the VCE Top Class Drama. Ms Tefera, who graduated from the Braybrook high school with an ATAR of 91.35, has been selected to perform her solo, The Wartime Entertainer, at this year’s VCAA Season of Excellence. The Annual VCE Season of Excellence for Top Class Drama comprises A plus drama solos of the most outstanding VCE students from the previous year involving students

from government, Catholic and independent schools. “I am excited and thrilled that my hard work paid off; it’s a wonderful achievement,” Ms Tefera said. “We always thought Top Class was an East-side thing and it’s such an honour to be selected since I’m from the West. “My solo as The Wartime Entertainer is based on a speech from Dr Martin Luther King Jr and my approach was to represent the disillusionment of black soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War while they were discriminated at home,” she said. “My thought process was to display the struggles of the

character while establishing the political and social circumstances of the time.” Ms Tefera thanked her drama teacher Myles Collins for his hard work and dedication. “Once you find teachers who are passionate about their subject, you can’t help but want to please them,” she said. “When you’re surrounded by the right people - people that push you and motivate you - it’s great.” Ms Tefera is currently studying Arts Global at Monash University, and hopes to transfer to Arts Law next year. The Top Class series will be held at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 1 May.

Auctions up as housing demand grows By CHARLENE MACAULAY HOUSES across the City of Maribyrnong are going under the hammer as demand for properties in the inner West grows. Statistics from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria reveal vendors are increasingly opting to put their properties up for auction rather than selling privately in a bid to drive up the selling price. Overall, there has been an increase in auctions over the past year in every suburb except for Seddon and Maidstone. In Maribyrnong, 28 auctions have been held between 1 January and 17 March this year, compared with 16 at the same time last year. Footscray has had 31 auctions (up from 24), Yarraville has had 32 (up from 27), West Foot-

scray has had 21 (up from 18) and Kingsville has had 11 (up from 5). West Footscray currently boasts the highest clearance rate, with 81 per cent of homes going to auction selling, while Seddon (80 per cent), Kingsville (72 per cent) and Footscray (71 per cent) also recorded high clearance rates. Laura Meaney from Compton Green said sales were often exceeding expectations due to the competitive buying pool. Most recently, a property in Charles St, Seddon, went under the hammer with a $690,000$740,000 reserve and sold for $805,000, while a house in Stafford St, West Footscray, sold for $604,000 - significantly higher than the marketed price range of $550,000 to $580,000.

Ms Meaney said an increase in median house prices over the past quarter could be attributed to low interest rates, a record number of auctions and an increase in million dollar plus sales. She said when market confidence improves and results surpass their reserve, the number of vendors opting to sell via auction increases. “Vendors expectations are up when they see other properties in their street selling higher than comparable sales suggest and so this domino effect is occurring throughout the inner West of Melbourne. “With interest rates at historical lows, buyers are often stretching their budgets and there is definitely a fear of missing out prevailing in the marketplace.”

■ Huge police operation targets crime syndicates …

Multiple charges for runaway pair By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY police uncovered a car full of drugs, weapons and cash during a routine patrol last week. Two uniform police officers spotted a car in Barkly St, Footscray, around 2am last Wednesday that aroused their suspicions. The vehicle initially had two males in it, however by the time the police had parked their vehicle, the males had gone. A quick but thorough search of the immediate area located two males hiding in a nearby yard. One male surrendered, and was apprehended, while the other tried to flee. The suspect attacked police when they caught up to him, but was eventually subdued and secured with the assistance of a back-up crew of police. Once apprehended, police searched both men and the vehicle, uncovering a sawn off shot gun, a pen pistol, shot gun cartridges, a variety of drugs including heroin and cannabis, cash and a number of knives. A 24-year-old Footscray man was charged with a number of weapons and drug offences and bailed to attend court at a later date, while a 31-year-old Braybrook man was charged with a number of assault, drugs and weapons offences and remanded into custody.

Murder charges

Picture: XAVIER SMERDON

Guns, drugs seized By XAVIER SMERDON SEVEN hundred police raided properties, seized weapons, drugs and stolen items across the Western Suburbs last week in one of the biggest operations seen in the area. Twenty-four people were arrested after police raided 45 properties in 23 suburbs across the North and West of Melbourne, including Altona, Altona North, Williamstown North, Williamstown, Truganina, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Mill Park, Hillside, Keilor Downs, Tarneit, Corio, Melton South, Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights, Kingsville South, Point Cook, Altona Meadows, Albion, Cairnlea, Sunshine West and Maribyrnong. The operation, known as Sky-

borne, was launched by Taskforce Santiago following investigations into crime syndicates in Melbourne. Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police Stephen Fontana said people arrested were ringleaders and members of a “well-known Middle Eastern family based crime syndicate”. “This was a high-risk operation, there was a number of individuals there that we considered to be extremely dangerous and we had the special operations group conduct three of those particular arrests for us and we had the critical incident response team conduct another three arrests, so we’re very happy that none of our members have been injured nor have any of the

people that have been taken into custody,” Mr Fontana said. “It’s a Middle Eastern crime syndicate, it’s a well-known family-based syndicate, I think you’d probably know the names of them and they will appear in court at a later time. “They’ve been involved in a range of criminal activities over the years, and particularly commercial drug trafficking and firearms trafficking.” Mr Fontana said police seized drugs including 100kg of dried cannabis, more than 12 firearms including a handgun with a silencer and a high-powered assault rifle, $55,000 cash, ammunition, vehicles and stolen property during the raids.

“The investigation’s been going since late last year into this particular syndicate. The commencement of the operation today, we basically went there with enough evidence to charge 19 individuals. It’s been a real bonus in terms of what we’ve found at these particular addresses, so there will be additional charges and additional people charged as well, which was unexpected at the time,” he said. “We’ve charged a number of significant individuals that we consider were leading this syndicate. As you know when you take a group of individuals out there’s always someone to fill the void later down the track, so we’ll continue our investigations.”

Tackling rubbish A MARIBYRNONG councillor is keen to rid the municipality of illegal dumping. Councillor Nam Quach has requested a council report into the status of illegally dumped rubbish across the municipality, including a review of successful mitigation strategies adopted by other councils and an action plan to address known recurring hot spots. Cr Quach told Star that nature strips and vacant blocks of land were becoming eyesores, thanks to old pieces of furniture and other rubbish littered around, with Braybrook one of the worst hit spots. The council has employed a rapid response team since 2011 to deal with dumped rubbish and urgent public asset maintenance requests, but Cr Quach believes more can be done. He said initiatives like getting the community to dob litter bugs in had proved successful in other municipalities.

Print doyen Noye signs off OBITUARY By CHARLENE MACAULAY HE CALLED himself the Bard of the West, or the Shakespeare of Footscray - now colourful veteran journalist Larry Noye has signed off for the last time. Mr Noye, who worked for the Footscray Mail and Advertiser for many years, passed away earlier this month aged 85 at St Georges Beneta Aged Care Facility in Altona Meadows. Larry was born at the Royal Women’s Hospital on 28 July 1928 as the youngest of four children and grew up in a closeknit family that were known around town as the “noisy Noyes”. He went to primary school in Yarraville and on to Williamstown High School, which he left, aged 16, to become a copy boy at The Truth. A year later, he joined the Footscray Mail and kicked off a prolific journalism career that included stints at the Bendigo Advertiser, Geelong Advertiser, Hobart Mercury and Launceston Examiner before he returned to his roots and worked at the Footscray Advertiser for 16 years. Towards the end of his career, he spent 14 years in Canberra doing political reporting before becoming one of the few male stenographers in the public service. Despite working in the hectic life of newspapers, Larry didn’t drink, smoke, swear or gamble. He lived by a simple and very straight moral code and believed in helping those less fortunate that himself.

Ashley Street will be closed between Rupert Street and Sunshine Road between 8pm and 6am every night, except Saturday, from Sunday 16 March to Friday 28 March 2014. The road closures will enable work on a new footpath alongside Ashley Street as part of the Regional Rail Link project.

Veteran Western Suburbs journalist Larry Noye passed Picture: CONTRIBUTED away aged 85. 117111 As a result, he belonged to a number of service clubs in Footscray and Altona. Like many in the West, Larry was an avid follower of the then-Footscray Football Club and loved going to matches and hanging out with past players.

He was also a big canine fan, taking in stray dogs or adopting them from the Lost Dogs Home. Larry was farewelled at a funeral service at the Altona Baptist Church earlier this month and laid to rest at the Williamstown Cemetery.

Detours will be in place with signage to guide you. We thank you for your patience while this work is completed. Further information is available by phoning 1800 107 925 or email info@rrlfdp.com.au

Weight on his mind By CHARLENE MACAULAY NEED lap band surgery or a gall bladder removal? Jason Winnett is your man. Mr Winnett is a laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon who performs a range of abdominal and general surgeries at Footscray’s Western Private Hospital. He also performs surgeries at the Epworth Freemasons Hospital, is medical director at the Hobsons Bay Endoscopy Centre, which has three day procedure centres at Altona, Werribee and Sydenham, and is the founder and director of the Winnett Specialist Group, which offers a range of surgical procedures in the East. So how does he do it? With a lot of help from wife and co-director Glennis, as well as the organisational skills of four secretaries.

“I have a very, very supportive team ... I can’t do it without them - it’s impossible,” he said. “I developed a special interest in bariatric surgery because the number of obese patients in the western world is rising every year and at least 40 per cent of our population are overweight and at least 20 per cent of them are obese, so those patients need help. “I will sometimes see a 16-year-old girl that weighs 150 or 180 kilograms, so to see them change and get them off to university and back to a normal weight is extremely rewarding.” Mr Winnett, who has been at Western Private for the past 10 years, praises the hospital and said its $30 million redevelopment would get patients into surgery quicker and allows that hospital

to treat more high-risk patients. “I’ve found it to be a superb hospital. It’s very small, it runs extremely efficiently, and the staff there are very highly trained and great fun to work with, but also very professional. “Even though I’m based in East Melbourne, I spend 75 per cent of my time out in the Western Suburbs, including Williamstown, Werribee and Sydenham, so I’m out West every day of the week and find it extremely rewarding. “There’s a lot of great patients.”

ALL MAKES AND MODELS Hopes are high for Victoria University’s bid to attract a Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food popup kitchen after being named as the finalist for Victoria.

Jamie knows what’s cooking By CHARLENE MACAULAY VICTORIA University’s Footscray Nicholson campus is one step closer to being the location for Jamie Oliver’s first Australian pop-up kitchen. VU has been named the Victorian finalist in the competition, and has embarked on a social media campaign to bring the kitchen to the West. The Ministry of Food popup kitchen is about inspiring even the most inexperienced cook how to make a meal from scratch. With hands-on cooking classes, people learn all about food - where it comes from, how to cook it and how it affects their bodies so they can feed themselves and their families tasty and nutritious food. The Jamie Oliver Minis-

try received 170 applications across Australia and they have named one finalist for each state and territory. The winner will be announced today. “We are ecstatic that our efforts so far to bring this world renowned health driven initiative to Melbourne’s West have been recognised,” VU pro vicechancellor Michelle Towstoless said. “Our application - supported by Maribyrnong City Council, Leadwest, Western Health, Macedon Ranges and North West Melbourne Medicare Local - means that we are on a mission to improve the health of our community by bringing Jamie’s Ministry of Food popup kitchen to Footscray. “We are passionate about

health, active living and nutrition - and like Jamie Oliver believe that knowing what we eat and how to cook it has to improve people’s lives. CEO of Ministry of Food Australia Alicia Peardon said the competition had an amazing response. “It’s abundantly evident there is a huge desire from people all over the country to do something about the obesity crisis and the lack of food knowledge of healthy food choices and home cooking in Australia.” The Ministry of Food program has already proved successful in Australia, with booked-out classes at the fixed centres in Ipswich and Geelong and the mobile kitchens that travel throughout Queensland and Victoria.

RED TAPE REDUCTION TO CUT COSTS MOVEMENT towards less red tape in the home building industry aims to reduce costs for small business principal contractors and builders. Housing Industry Association, the voice of Australia’s $70 billion home building industry, has welcomed progress on the Federal Government’s red tape reduction agenda, including the introduction of a new deregulation website and biannual Parliamentary ‘repeal days’. HIA chief of industry policy and media Graham Wolfe said: “Inefficient and unnecessary regulation is a real bugbear of the building industry and adds costs to building a new home. “The allocation of Parliamentary sitting time to freeing up builders and the economy by reducing laws, rather than introducing new ones, shows a genuine commitment by government to addressing this chronic problem.” According to Mr Wolfe, one of the obvious examples of this was the Australian Tax Office contractor reporting requirements placed on the home building industry. He said it unfairly transferred the burden of information collection from the tax office onto small business principal contractors and builders, imposing considerable additional administrative and accounting red tape. “In 2011, Treasury estimated a one-off cost of $90 would be borne by businesses required to prepare and lodge a report. “However, HIA builder members

ESTHER LAUAKI

advised that, on average, they spent an additional 17.8 hours on paperwork as a result of the new regulations and incurred extra costs of $1621,” Mr Wolfe said. Chief executive of Master Builders Australia Wilhelm Harnisch said that red tape may sound mundane

until it is connected with business people spending hours grappling with excessive paperwork instead of directing their energies to the productivity of their businesses and creating new jobs. “Building and construction is one of Australia’s most intensely

DISPLAY & LAND

regulated industries and the nation’s third largest employer. “Cutting red tape will boost the productivity of the industry allowing it to generate more jobs and provide better value to consumers,” he said.

Dogs win slot By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has qualified for the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final after defeating Geelong by 24 runs. Hosting the game at Mervyn Hughes Oval, Footscray captain Dean Russ won the toss and elected to bat on day one. After powering through their first final, the Bulldogs didn’t have things all their own way as a fired-up Geelong bowling attack made early strikes. The Cats removed Anthony Barton, Travis Dean and John Hastings cheaply to leave Footscray in trouble at 3/35. Through Russ and wicket keeper Dylan Kight, Footscray battled back, adding 50 for the fourth wicket. However, there was more trouble to follow with both batsmen sent on their way within 13 runs of each other to leave the score at 5/98. Australian under 19 representative Guy Walker then showed his talents, batting brilliantly on his way to 51. He was well supported by Shanuka Dissanayaka with the pair edging the total towards 200. With all the recognised batsmen back in the sheds, the Footscray tail did its best to keep the scoreboard ticking over. They combined for a valuable 20 before the wicket of Michael

Kelly ended the innings. That left Geelong needing 219 to seal the win and the Cats’ chase got off to a strong start. Geelong moved to 4/161, leaving the batting side needing 57 runs with six wickets in hand. It may have looked an easy task on paper, but it proved just the opposite as Hastings wreaked havoc with the ball. He combined with Jake Haberfield to blitz through the Geelong lower order. At one stage, the Cats lost 4/2 and were eventually bowled out for 194 in the 66th over. Hastings finished the innings with the outstanding figures of 5/45 while Haberfield took 4/81. The other wicket to fall was taken by Hamish Winter-Irving. For Geelong, James Crosthwaite was by far the best of the batsmen, producing a stunning 118 and batting through the majority of the innings. But he was unable to get enough support from his teammates, with the next best score just 19. Footscray will now play Essendon in the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final after the Bombers knocked off top-of-thetable St Kilda in their semi-final clash. The match will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week at the Junction Oval.

Clubbers blitz to bask in glory By ADEM SARICAOGLU IT was a two-hour burst of strike bowling and clutch fielding for the ages. Yarraville Club came into the final session of Turf Cricket’s Senior Division grand final needing a herculean effort from its bowlers. Nine wickets were still required for victory and South Caulfield was in the box seat at 1/90 chasing 170 as players took the field for the final act on Sunday. With Matt Murphy and Richard Sherlock taking up the attack, the Clubbers were simply stunning in toppling the South Caulfield order. Outstanding bowling combined with sublime catching in the slips and an awkward yet spectacular ‘caught and bowled’ dismissal for Murphy had suddenly swayed the contest completely in Yarraville Club’s favour. In the gloomy conditions at Altona North’s Crofts Reserve, the Clubbers tore their way through the required wickets with an uncanny ease and soon enough the players were mobbed by supporters and club officials in the middle before a strong rendition of the club song. Yarraville Club had become the

Yarraville Club was simply stunning with the ball and in the field during the final session of Sunday’s grand final win. 95200 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Senior Division’s premier, again. Basking in the aftermath of what has become a very familiar euphoria of premiership glory, winning captain-coach Emmett Bronca praised

the amazing fielding his side produced on its way to victory. “We’ve got some of the best slips fielders in the competition and the difference between a group of

blokes that are actually playing for each other and just a team makes a huge difference,” Bronca said. “The ability for (Anthony) Cristofaro’s catch at point, Justin Baker’s catches at slips and Benny Tupper behind the stumps were all absolutely amazing. Everything was just top-notch today. “Matty Murphy’s wrong-footed, one-hander outside the line, was absolutely tremendous.” Murphy and Sherlock were kept on for almost the entire session, with Adam Contessa coming in to replace Sherlock late in the piece. Sherlock was later named the official man-of-the-match. “We always knew he had it in him,” Bronca said of Sherlock. “He’s shown lots of glimpses here and there, but he’s just really come together at the right part of the season. “He was starting to bowl with good pace again and good consistency and with those two things combined at this level of cricket, he was always going to be dangerous.” Sunday’s grand final triumph was Yarraville Club’s fifth in seven years.

THE Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final was abandoned and declared a draw on Sunday after the pitch was found to have been deliberately damaged before play. Both the Grand United and West Newport Cricket Clubs were called out to the Greenwich Reserve scene on Sunday morning with the game delicately poised after three days of play. By stumps on Saturday evening, West Newport was just one wicket away from victory with Grand United still needing an unlikely 92 runs for victory. However, match and club officials arrived on Sunday morning to discover several holes across each popping crease. The covers that were in place overnight were also damaged and the roller that would have been used to repair the wicket was found broken and could not be used. Police were eventually called to the scene. On the day his club should have claimed the WDCA’s top prize, West Newport secretary Mick Jones said he was “absolutely disgusted” with the overnight shenanigans. “Overnight, we got the phone call saying that the wicket got dug up so we went down there and just before the popping creases on both ends there were four-inch holes right across the whole wicket,” Jones explained. “It was someone who knows cricket because they knew where the wicket was, they knew how to pull the covers back, they pulled the covers back on and they even went to the length of taking the pieces of dirt and putting them in the water near The Strand. “So they knew exactly what they were doing.” Grand United president Daniel Gaylor described the culprits as “complete morons” and said the book would be thrown at them if they’re found to have been members of his club. “We would obviously have a thorough investigation,” Gaylor said. “We would hope anyone found guilty of doing something like that either from our club or from another club would be given a life ban from the association and of course, from our club.” WDCA chairman Mark Keating said a determination on the result of the uncompleted match would be confirmed early this week.

Mitch’s life in the pool By LIAM TWOMEY

Sunshine & Western Region Sports Club Inc.

FOUR times a week, Mitchell Davenport-Wright’s alarm will go off at 4:15am. Soon after, he’s in the water, swimming lap after lap before a full day at school followed by more training at night. While this may be daunting for some, Davenport-Wright is doing everything he can to become a champion. The 16-year-old is a rising star of the Australian swimming scene, winning over 80 state and 40 national medals throughout his junior career. He also claimed an open age National Title at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney last year. Not content with dominating one stroke, the Williamstown resident competes in the 400-metre individual medley event. “I swim more distance freestyle but you could say that my main event is more the 400 individual medley,” Davenport-Wright explained. “It is a hard event to train for when you consider that to get the full benefit out of the training session, you do the same thing the whole way through. It is about finding the balance of working on what I am not good at and leaving a bit less of what I am good at.” Davenport-Wright’s exploits haven’t

star gone unnoticed, with some of the best coaches in the sport quick to praise him. Former Australian national coach Ian Pope, who is also coaching Davenport-Wright at his club the Melbourne Vicentre, is rapt with the progress being made. “Mitch is one of the best male swimmers coming through in the Australian Age Team,” Pope said. “(He is) a young man that always gives his best in everything he undertakes, self-motivated and driven for the highest standard.” Davenport-Wright is now preparing for an even busier time than usual with the Commonwealth Games selection trials and the Australian Age Championships coming up. “I’m really looking forward to making the transition from being an age group swimmer to an open age swimmer at the Commonwealth Games trials,” he said. “As an age group swimmer you can swim easy in the mornings and make it

through to the final but when it comes to open swims you really need to put in for the morning and then try and back it up for the night. That is a big challenge for me.” Despite his already hectic schedule, there are no plans to slow down for Davenport-Wright who is targeting the ultimate success in his sport. “I think everyone looks towards the Olympics. It is definitely my goal,” he said. “I don’t set low standards. I want to be the best in the world. I want to hold a world record, I want to have an Olympic gold medal and if it’s possible, get as many as I can. I just need to take it step by step and see how long it takes me to get there.” For his outstanding sporting achievements Davenport-Wright has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Davenport-Wright will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national Mitchell Davenport-Wright is this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star level. Early focus on flag Werribee’s one hope for flag

Tynan Whight takes on an Altona opponent during one of Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT last year’s clashes. 103378 derson will all be stepping up. “I feel the young guys can certainly come in and fulfil the roles that some of the older guys that left us had done, and I think for the group our goal’s still to strive towards the finals and have a crack at the title. That is our plan and even with the changes in the group, we’re still pretty keen on doing that.” Last year’s skipper Tynan Whight looms as the only major

omission ahead of the new season. But with the likes of Meaney, Stephens and Henderson all looking to make a good impression at the top level, Brooks is keen to see just how well the Bulldogs’ long summer on the training track will hold them in good stead come round one. “We’ve been trying to get the boys to a new level of fitness from where they were last year,” Brooks said.

BOBBY Murphy played his 250th game for the Bulldogs last Sunday in their loss against the Eagles. I have been lucky to have done a fair bit with Bob during his 13 years at the Kennel. He has always been cheeky, witty, professional and personable off the field, and on field he is a genuinely great player. His articles for The Age are a must read even for those that don’t follow the Red White and Blue, and his recent work on Fox Footy is the same. He is a good storyteller, and I have no doubt the media will form a big part of his post-football life. His is a good story, his Mum was a nun and his Dad a priest. Yes you read correctly. He has hinted that he might go on past this season if he feels he can still contribute, but that is a decision he will make when the time is right. He is a champion bloke and a champion player, you can’t ask for much more. THERE was some star spotting going on at the opening of WYN City Bowl last Saturday in Point Cook. Former Collingwood champion Peter Daicos and his family enjoyed themselves and media star Denis Walter was there with his grandson. ‘Daics’ cut a fine figure trying his hand at bowling while Denis was seen eyeing off the bumper cars and laser tag. The centre is very impressive and will no doubt be very popular for birthday parties and celebrations for kids but I have to say it is an equally great venue for adults. Sarah and I had a ball.

Coach Brett Jacobs is happy with his squad and their preparations and it is good to see clubs embracing the concept which will only grow in stature in the coming years. There is a good sprinkling of former AFL players in all the metro squads but I see this as something that local kids will aspire to in the future as the carnival develops. FOOTSCRAY coach Travis Brooks is eyeing off a finals berth despite opting to focus on development in preparation for the new Premier League hockey season. The Bulldogs narrowly missed out on the finals in 2013, finishing fifth on the table with 10 wins and three draws from their 22 starts in the state’s top flight competition. Brooks admits the club’s recruiting efforts were re-focused toward developing the abundance of talent already at McIvor Reserve over the summer, but said last week the goal should still be to aim for the top four in 2014. “We’re about bringing along and developing the juniors and so this year’s about those kids taking opportunities that have been opened up by the club not looking overseas for players and stepping up into the group,” Brooks said. “So guys like Patty Meaney, Morgan Stephens and Tom Hen-

WERRIBEE Cricket Club only managed to get one of their four senior teams through to this weekend’s grand final. The second XI got through but it was a very disappointing end to the season. The firsts dominated the competition until the final couple of games and will rue their lost chance at a flag. Heath Pritchard broke David Norman’s record taking 47 wickets for the season. Yarraville Club Cricket Club will be celebrating an unlikely flag win after beating South Caulfield by 40 runs in a nail-biting finish.
