By YASEMIN TALAT A BURNSIDE resident will receive his second bravery medal for the courageous act of saving three people from a vicious pit bull terrier. Damian Simon Hall was driving along Westwood Drive in Burnside on 17 November 2011 when he pulled over to help a woman and baby who were being attacked by the dog. Mr Hall said he quickly reacted to the situation without thinking. “I saw it happening; I thought that didn’t look right, so I turned around went back got out of the car and did what I did,” Mr Hall said.
“I didn’t think I just did,” he said. Mr Hall grabbed a metal wrench and tried to hit the dog off the victims before the dog then turned on him. A passer-by pulled up in a ute to also assist, and the woman and child were able to climb inside safely with Mr Hall jumping onto the tray of ute to escape the attacking dog. Mr Hall then noticed a neighbour emerge from her house when the dog turned on her. Again, without thinking twice Mr Hall ran to the aid of the lady- holding the dog back giving her enough time to go back inside.
Mr Hall said it was at this stage he thought his life may have been at risk. “I was all spent by then and didn’t have energy in my own legs,” he said. “And I had to get away because it was hanging off me.” Mr Hall first received state recognition for his bravery in December 2012. The driver of the utility also received a citation that year. Mr Hall said his family were very proud of his actions and he felt overwhelmed by the recognition. But he was yet to see himself as a hero. “In my opinion, the heroes in the world wear the uniforms,” he said.
Mr Hall is now friends with the family, who are always thankful and grateful for his bravery. And they regard him as part of the family, he said. Connie Borg, also from Burnside, was the woman who was pushing her one-year-old grandson along that day when the pit bull attacked them. She received a national commendation for brave conduct this year for her actions in protecting her grandson. Mrs Borg immediately placed herself in front of the pram to protect him. She was clawed and bitten by the dog. The animal was destroyed under the order of Melton City Council.

Costly need for speed By YASEMIN TALAT A SUNSHINE NORTH man was among six people caught speeding in Toongabbie last weekend. The six students, all probationary drivers, were travelling in a convoy of six cars at dangerously high speeds when they were intercepted by a State Highway Patrol officer on Traralgon-Maffra Road. The cars were each clocked at speeds of around 120km/h in a 100km/h zone. The drivers said the stunt was a result of succumbing to “peer pressure”. State Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Kevin Byrne said he was disappointed by the behaviour of the young drivers who had put lives at risk for a careless stunt. “These are six young people who had just been at a leadership camp,”
Acting Sgt Byrne said. “The next thing they do is get behind the wheel and act irresponsibly,” he said. “The potential consequences of this behaviour are horrifying.” “If one of the front cars came to grief there would have been multiple vehicles involved and no doubt another multiple fatal collision on our country roads,” Acting Sgt Byrne said. “It’s time that people in the community started to take ownership of road trauma and stopped taking unacceptable risks on our roads.” A 21-year-old Sunshine North man, a 19-year-old Mill Park man, a 22-year-old Warrandyte man, a 19-year-old Chadstone man, a 19-year-old Boronia man and a 19-year-old Burwood woman each received a $289 fine and gained three demerit points.

ATO urges super returns By YASEMIN TALAT BRIMBANK residents are missing out on millions of dollars in lost superannuation according to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Deer Park residents were among those who were missing out on the most, with over $29 million in lost superannuation. The results also included over 3900 lost accounts with an average value of $7359. St Albans also had over $21 million in missing super across 3476 accounts. The Australian Tax Office last week urged residents to claim their lost superannuation and to roll multiple accounts into one single active super fund to avoid unnecessary fees and administration costs. Deputy Commissioner for Superannuation Alison Lendon said
residents were missing out on claiming their own money. “If you found $50 in the pocket of your old coat, it would make your day. But 1.9 million Australians have an average of $8368 waiting to be found and claimed - which is a lot more than a forgotten banknote,” Ms Lendon said. “Finding your lost super and rolling it into your active super fund could give your retirement savings a significant boost,” she said. “And thanks to recent reforms to super, it’s easier than ever to find and claim your own money.” Ms Lendon said the ATO was the first port of call for residents who were keen to find their super. “Using SuperSeeker, which is part of our online services, makes it easy to find lost and ATO-held monies,” she said.

A NEW Group launching in Brimbank is set to empower women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Kontiki Cultural Women Empowerment Group will launch with a sewing group where members will learn to create items from traditional African textiles. The program is set to support newly arrived migrant women develop sewing skills which will also help them socially. Project co-ordinator Charles Sesay hoped the group would empower women from both the African and wider communities. “We hope to see the African women, especially the youth feel empowered and we hope they are able to do things on their own to brighten their future,” he said. Relationships Australia community liaison officer Pirooz Jeffrey is supporting the group which is led by designer and dressmaker from Sierra Leone Francess Sesay. “It’s important in so many different aspects, the most important part is to reduce the risk of unemployment and social isolation for African women, and women of all ages from migrant and refugee backgrounds,” Mr Jeffrey said. “Being socially isolated, unemployed or having a lack of skills contributes to their sense of isolation and hopelessness,” he said. “We are hoping through the activities we can inform and educate the rest of the community about the gems we have hidden in the Brimbank area and to tap into the local resources, skills and talents and to promote the multicultural diversity of Brimbank.” The group will officially launch and exhibit their work at the Sunshine Vis Hub on Saturday 5 April. The event will also double as a fund-raiser to help support the group. The group is supported by Relationship Australia Victoria, Brimbank City Council and Sierra Leone Australians Communities of Victoria. For more information or to book call Pirooz Jeffrey on 0447 490 002.

Touching legal aid quells family violence By YASEMIN TALAT WOMEN in Sunshine will benefit from a new collaboration between two community services that have joined forces to aid victims of family violence. Victoria Legal Aid and inTouch Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence have teamed up to help women living in Sunshine who have experienced family violence. The new partnership is targeted to help women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
The collaboration means that clients who cannot get help through inTouch legal services will be linked to Victoria Legal Aid lawyers to ensure clients do not miss out on legal help. Victoria Legal Aid Family Violence Program manager Leanne Sinclair said the close partnership would help address family violence and was crucial to the highly vulnerable clients that both organisations assisted. “Some women who have experienced family violence do not understand our legal system, and do not
know where and when to get legal help,” Ms Sinclair said. “They may not be confident enough to seek legal advice or representation through external services like Victoria Legal Aid, but may approach a community service like inTouch,” she said. inTouch supports and responds to issues of family violence in more than 20 languages. inTouch chief executive officer Maya Avdibegovic said the organisation provided a “safety net” to catch clients from CALD backgrounds who commonly fell

through the gaps. “There is a real need for collaboration between services and for legal service providers to build on cultural awareness and competency,” Ms Avdibegovic said. “This collaboration is a major step in overcoming barriers for CALD women, and will have a lifelong positive impact on our clients who could have otherwise fallen through the gaps.” For more information, visit: www.legalaid.vic.gov.au or call Legal Help on 1300 792 387 or www. intouch.asn.au or call 9413 6500.

Guns, drugs in raid By XAVIER SMERDON SEVEN hundred police raided properties, seized weapons, drugs and stolen items across the western suburbs last week in one of the biggest operations seen in the area. Twenty-four people were arrested after police raided 45 properties in 23 suburbs across the North and West of Melbourne, including Altona, Altona North, Williamstown North, Williamstown, Truganina, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Mill Park, Hillside, Keilor Downs, Tarneit, Corio, Melton South, Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights, Kingsville South, Point Cook, Altona Meadows, Albion, Cairnlea, Sunshine West and Maribyrnong. The operation, known as Sky-
borne, was launched by Taskforce Santiago following investigations into crime syndicates in Melbourne. Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police Stephen Fontana said people arrested were ringleaders and members of a “well-known Middle Eastern family based crime syndicate”. “This was a high-risk operation, there was a number of individuals there that we considered to be extremely dangerous and we had the special operations group conduct three of those particular arrests for us and we had the critical incident response team conduct another three arrests, so we’re very happy that none of our members have been injured nor have any of the
people that have been taken into custody,” Ass Comm Fontana said. “It’s a Middle Eastern crime syndicate, it’s a well-known family-based syndicate, I think you’d probably know the names of them and they will appear in court at a later time. “They’ve been involved in a range of criminal activities over the years, and particularly commercial drug trafficking and firearms trafficking.” Mr Fontana said police seized drugs including 100kg of dried cannabis, more than 12 firearms including a handgun with a silencer and a high-powered assault rifle, $55,000 cash, ammunition, vehicles and stolen
property during the raids. “The investigation’s been going since late last year into this particular syndicate. The commencement of the operation today, we basically went there with enough evidence to charge 19 individuals. It’s been a real bonus in terms of what we’ve found at these particular addresses, so there will be additional charges and additional people charged as well, which was unexpected at the time,” he said. “We’ve charged a number of significant individuals that we consider were leading this syndicate. As you know when you take a group of individuals out there’s always someone to fill the void later down the track, so we’ll continue our investigations.”

Children at play: please don’t smoke here From 1 April 2014, smoking is banned at all Victorian outdoor areas near recreational and sporting grounds commonly used by children and young people. As of this date, under the Tobacco Act 1987, smoking is banned outdoors within 10 metres (about two car lengths) of: • outdoor public children’s playground equipment, and skate parks, • sporting venues during organised under 18 sporting events, • as well as in outdoor areas of public swimming pool complexes.
Under the Tobacco Act 1987 breaking this law could result in an infringement penalty of $1441. This law has been brought into place to protect everyone, especially children and young people, from the dangers of second-hand smoke.
clean and clear of cigarette butt litter. Please respect the right of everyone to enjoy clean places to play and fresh air, by not smoking at playgrounds, skate parks, children’s sporting events and at public swimming pools.
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. Also community attitudes towards smoking have changed. We don’t want to see children connecting healthy recreation with the habit of smoking. Children are inluenced by what they see going on around them. When smokers light up in their company, children notice.
For more information on the statewide smoking ban where children play, you can visit health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms or contact the Department of Health at tobacco.policy@health.vic.gov.au

Report littering when you see it EPA Victoria wants you to help reduce the impact of littering on our environment through reporting incidents to them. More than ever EPA is focusing on the littering of cigarette butts on our roadsides, rivers and beaches in their campaign, ‘A cleaner Victoria is in your hands’. Every year approximately 25 bushires in Victoria’s parks and forests are started as a result of discarded butts. Victorians also generate 14,560 tonnes of litter annually, costing the community around $80 million in cleanup costs. For littering EPA can issue an Infringement Notice, with ines ranging from $288.72 for an unlit cigarette or small piece of rubbish to $577.44 for a lit cigarette. If you see someone littering report it via EPA’s website, its new ‘Report Litter’ mobile app (available from the iTunes App Store and Google Play), over the phone and by mail. ST ALBANS Secondary College’s newest students showcased their work to family and friends last week at the college’s 2014 expo. Junior School Level Co-ordinator Laura Gough said students worked hard to prepare for the event which included language skill games, music performances, science experiments and role playing and poetry in French and Italian. A PAIR of hip-hoppers from a Brimbank dance crew is aiming for international success. Matthew and Jason, who live in Sunshine and Taylors Lakes, formed the Popstars Dance Crew (PDC) in 2010. They often practice at Victoria University in Footscray, which they both attend. “From the beginning there’s just been the two of us,” Matthew said. “I thought Melbourne needed a new dance crew and we have been friends for 18 years.
“Me and Jason work well together. “We do hip-hop, popping and locking. “We get to do some dance battles and get some respect from other dancers.” Matthew said he and Jason hoped to eventually compete at the World Battle, an international competition for dance crews. “We actually just go to battle and do it on the spur of the moment,” he said. “Sometimes we get haters and that doesn’t faze us.
“People love us when we battle. “You need to have a lot of confidence and a lot of passion in what you do.” Matthew said he looked up to the famous Australian dance crew and band, Justice Crew. His advice for other young dancers is to rehearse as much as possible. “I would say if you’re not a dancer or want to be one, just practice, practice, practice and you will grow in confidence,” he said.

The annual event aims to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The community event will be held at the car park of Bunnings Caroline Springs on 13 April, with both organisations doing their bit to help raise funds for the Good Friday Appeal. Lions club committee chairman Dave Younger said he hoped the event would get big-

Mr Younger, who is a truck driver himself, said they expected 30 trucks to be on display at the show. He said crowds could look forward to seeing big prime movers and an array of working

Belinda Sudano is helping raise awareness and charity for the Leukaemia Foundation in honour of her close friend who lost her battle to leukaemia in 2011. 117013 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI
Essence of hope By YASEMIN TALAT ST ALBANS resident Belinda Sudano is delivering the ‘Essence of Hope’ through various fund-raising events in memory of a dear friend. Ms Sudano, who had held fund-raising events in the past, began fund-raising for the Leukaemia Foundation when her long-time friend Emma was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2010. Emma passed away in 2011 when she was 25 years old and ever since Ms Sudano has held a charity gala in her honour. The Essence of Hope initiative, organised by Ms Sudano, has so far raised over $27,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
“When my friend was diagnosed with leukaemia it made sense for me to dedicate all my fund-raising efforts to the Leukaemia Foundation,” Ms Sudano said. “The event is about coming together to raise money for the foundation and also a chance to come together to remember someone who was taken far too soon,” she said. “I think it’s been a really important process for my grief and it’s part of my way of connecting with her.” The friends met in high school and continued their friendship for the years beyond graduation. “She was the only person
who I would confide in about really significant things that were happening in my life that I didn’t share with anyone else,” Ms Sudano said. Ms Sudano hoped her event would help raise awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation and the great work they did to help support patients and their families. Essence of Hope Initiative’s annual charity night will be held in Docklands on 5 April 2014. IT’S the community donation program with a difference. The team at Grill’d restaurant at Watergardens Shopping Centre each month supports three local community groups. Every month $500 is given back to the community through the restaurant’s ‘Local Matters’ program. “We’re trying to do our small part to help local groups,” said business manager of Grill’d Watergardens Kevin Suckling. Community and not-for-profit groups can apply online to be part of the program, with three groups chosen each month to be repre-
sented on a jar in the restaurant. When customers buy a burger they are given a token to put into the jar of the group they would like to support. The group with the most tokens receives $300 at the end of each month, with the other groups each receiving $100. Last month, the non-profit organisation ‘Autism Angels’, who advocate for and support families and children living with autism, collected the most tokens. President of Autism Angels Christos Havelas was very appreciative of the support. “It’s fantastic to see an establishment like that who helps community organisations like
ours and others as well,” Mr Havelas said. “The money they raised for us, no matter how much it is, we are excited and happy that it will help the group go a bit further,” he said. Mr Havelas thanked Grill’d and its patrons for all the support. Autism Angels will use the donation towards group activities including an autism awareness event the ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’ on April 6 at Harvey Lagoon Reserve in Keilor from 11am, which the community is invited to attend. CARLISLE HAS MELBOURNE COVERED FROM PAGE 1. WITH 21 locations and 73 homes on display, Carlisle Homes really does have Melbourne covered! Carlisle Homes has always focused on delivering the very best customer service. Part of this commitment is making sure it provides homes in the suburbs and estates where its customers want to build. So far this year Carlisle has already opened six new display homes across the north and western regions of Melbourne. Two of them are in Greenvale Gardens Estate in Greenvale, two at Atherstone Estate in Melton South and two at the Eucalypt Estate in Wollert. And as a further commitment to its customers, Carlisle Homes is also holding an interior design seminar in its homes in Atherstone Estate, Melton South, on Saturday 29 March as part of the launch of the estate. The seminar will show off the homes’ best design features and will highlight how visitors can achieve the same look in their homes. The hour-long event starts at 11.30am and visitors can enjoy a free barbecue lunch and drinks afterwards. The display centres showcase the Affinity Collection and T-Range homes which are new designs to the range for 2014. Greenvale Gardens Estate, Greenvale Introducing Carlisle’s new Affinity Collection homes on display. These home designs showcase the great value, style and spacious modern family living that Carlisle is renowned for. Montclair 52 The Montclair 52 with the Classique façade, is truly a showpiece of modern home design. This double-storey home features a large kitchen with walk-in pantry, opening to a large living area and meals and alfresco areas which provide ample room for entertaining. Key features include an activity area
which is located away from master suite to ensure privacy and a kitchen which is the heart of the wide-open indoor and outdoor living areas. The master suite includes a walk-in wardrobe, a huge ensuite and private balcony, and the bedrooms include their own private en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Augusta 33 The Augusta 33 with Baldwin façade is cleverly designed to keep entertainment areas separate from the bedrooms, creating the feeling of privacy and comfort. With the alfresco dining area adjoining the kitchen, meals and living areas, the Augusta also offers the perfect house for entertaining. Key features include a home theatre which is just off the light-filled kitchen and alfresco dining area and a formal lounge which is separate from main living and entertaining areas. The double vanity parents’ ensuite includes spa bath and separate toilet and the kids can enjoy their own bedrooms with private hallway. Atherstone Estate in Melton South The Ashwood 21 and the Cambridge 26 are new to the Carlisle range for 2014 and are featured at the Atherstone Estate. These innovative new designs feature zoned living for small and large families. Ashwood 21 Perfect for the small family or empty nester, the Ashwood is an affordable and practical home with stunning contemporary design features. Key features are the master suite, which includes a double vanity, large shower and expansive walk-in wardrobe, and the large children’s bedrooms each have walk-in wardrobes. The large home theatre is perfect for entertaining extended family and friends and the island kitchen flows gracefully into spacious dining and living areas. Cambridge 26 Offering practical family living with affordable luxuries, the Cambridge is a
showpiece of contemporary home design. The living area is filled with ample space and natural light - great for entertaining family and friends. Key features include the master suite, which has a large walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with ample storage, and the kids can enjoy own private space with three big bedrooms including walk-in wardrobes. Alfresco dining opens up to the kitchen and meals area which is perfect for entertaining and the clever design means privacy when it is needed or open everything up for family entertaining. Eucalypt Estate in Wollert The Eucalypt Display Village features the Claremont 35 and Aspen 26 homes on display for the first time. Both T-Range homes, they offer practical, efficient and affordable floor plans for busy, growing families. The focus has been on innovative design and ensuring an extensive list of inclusions which deliver exceptional value. Claremont 35 The Claremont is set to be a modern classic with its contemporary, family friendly floor plan delivering a wonderful feeling of space and light across two floors. With a generous sized formal lounge room, separate study and upstairs activity room, all complementing the open plan downstairs living area, this is a home which is ideal for today’s busy family lifestyle.
The large, beautifully appointed kitchen, with its spacious walk-in pantry, is the focal hub of the home. Upstairs, the master suite is cleverly zoned from three well-sized kids’ rooms and separate multi-purpose area. The master suite doubles as parents’ sanctuary and includes a luxurious ensuite and smartly conceived walk-through wardrobe. Its versatile floor plan with multiple living zones provides flexibility for growing families. Aspen 26 The new Aspen includes clever design cues to maximise space allowing two living areas, a study plus a fabulous alfresco area. Crisp detailing and careful consideration has delivered a floor plan with wonderful liveability which is suitable for both families and empty nesters. The open-plan living, kitchen and meals area adjacent to rumpus/home theatre room offers practical and versatile spaces. A second and third bedroom is zoned away from both the living area and master suite for peace and quiet. There is also an extra-large master suite at the front of the home to create a tranquil sanctuary and there is the flexibility at no extra cost to have either a fourth bedroom or study. RED TAPE REDUCTION TO CUT COSTS MOVEMENT towards less red tape in the home building industry aims to reduce costs for small business principal contractors and builders. Housing Industry Association, the voice of Australia’s $70 billion home building industry, has welcomed progress on the Federal Government’s red tape reduction agenda, including the introduction of a new deregulation website and biannual Parliamentary ‘repeal days’. HIA chief of industry policy and media Graham Wolfe said: “Inefficient and unnecessary regulation is a real bugbear of the building industry and adds costs to building a new home. “The allocation of Parliamentary sitting time to freeing up builders and the economy by reducing laws, rather than introducing new ones, shows a genuine commitment by government to addressing this chronic problem.” According to Mr Wolfe, one of the obvious examples of this was the Australian Tax Office contractor reporting requirements placed on the home building industry. He said it unfairly transferred the burden of information collection from the tax office onto small business principal contractors and builders, imposing considerable additional administrative and accounting red tape. “In 2011, Treasury estimated a one-off cost of $90 would be borne by businesses required to prepare and lodge a report. “However, HIA builder members
ESTHER LAUAKI
advised that, on average, they spent an additional 17.8 hours on paperwork as a result of the new regulations and incurred extra costs of $1621,” Mr Wolfe said. Chief executive of Master Builders Australia Wilhelm Harnisch said that red tape may sound mundane
until it is connected with business people spending hours grappling with excessive paperwork instead of directing their energies to the productivity of their businesses and creating new jobs. “Building and construction is one of Australia’s most intensely
DISPLAY & LAND
regulated industries and the nation’s third largest employer. “Cutting red tape will boost the productivity of the industry allowing it to generate more jobs and provide better value to consumers,” he said.

Sport Dogs edge out Cats By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has qualified for the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final after defeating Geelong by 24 runs. Hosting the game at Mervyn Hughes Oval, Footscray captain Dean Russ won the toss and elected to bat on day one. After powering through their first final, the Bulldogs didn’t have things all their own way as a firedup Geelong bowling attack made early strikes. The Cats removed Anthony Barton, Travis Dean and John Hastings cheaply to leave Footscray in trouble at 3/35. Through Russ and wicket keeper Dylan Kight, Footscray battled back, adding 50 for the fourth wicket. However, there was more trouble to follow with both batsmen sent on their way within 13 runs of each other to leave the score at 5/98. Australian under 19 representative Guy Walker then showed his talents, batting brilliantly on his way to 51. He was well supported by Shanuka Dissanayaka with the pair edging the total towards 200. With all the recognised batsmen back in the sheds, the Footscray tail did its best to keep the scoreboard ticking over. They combined for a valuable 20 before the wicket of Michael Kelly ended the innings. That left Geelong needing 219 to seal the win and the Cats’ chase got off to a strong start. Geelong moved to 4/161, leaving the batting side needing 57 runs with six wickets in hand. It may have looked an easy task on paper, but it proved just the opposite as Hastings wreaked havoc with the ball. He combined with Jake Haberfield to blitz through the Geelong lower order.
Dylan Kight smashes a ball through the covers on Saturday. 117239 At one stage, the Cats lost 4/2 and were eventually bowled out for 194 in the 66th over. Hastings finished the innings with the outstanding figures of 5/45 while Haberfield took 4/81. The other wicket to fall was taken by Hamish Winter-Irving.
For Geelong, James Crosthwaite was by far the best of the batsmen, producing a stunning 118 and batting through the majority of the innings. But he was unable to get enough support from his teammates, with the next best score just 19. Footscray will now play Es-

After making a whopping 369 in its first dig last week, Tullamarine’s bowlers smashed PEGS on the Donald McLean Reserve wicket, restricting them to 151 in 90 overs. 117240 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

Big guns fire up on field By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Calder Cannons proved too good for the Western Jets in the opening game of the TAC Cup season on Saturday. In typically blustery conditions at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, the Cannons made better use of the scoring end in the first and third quarters to break away from the Jets on their way to a 40-point win. Jets coach Torin Baker said his side needed to make more of its scoring opportunities count when the game was still up for grabs. “We thought there was a three-goal wind down to one end in the first quarter, so it was just disappointing that in the second quarter we weren’t able to convert a couple of our opportunities to make it a close game at half-time,” Baker said. “When you’re three goals down at halftime and Calder has the wind in the third quarter and it gets out to six goals, it makes it really tough for us to fight back.” In-form utility Connor Menadue was the best Jet on the ground, while team-mates Corey Ellis and Liam Carter also drew praise from Baker. Dillon Viojo’s work in the air and at ground level was also a highlight during the first half.
“I thought Corey Ellis’s game was very good,” Baker said. “Whether we threw him down back or played him in the midfield, he was one player that produced a four-quarter effort. “I thought Connor Menadue’s run and carry was excellent and Liam Carter, who was in his second game of TAC Cup football, competed really well down back and gave us a bit of drive as well.” Baker admits there is a bit of work to do out on the training track ahead of this Sunday’s clash with the Sandringham Dragons. On Saturday it was in the clinches where the Jets got found out, but Baker said he’d be keen to see just how much his midfield could improve in coming weeks. “There’s no doubt we were beaten very easily at the stoppages and that was the major difference in the game, so we’ve got to turn that around really quickly,” he said. “We’ve got a group of midfielders who haven’t played a lot of TAC Cup football in the midfield so we’ll just continue to work with them to make sure that they get better each week.”

Best of the rest By ADEM SARICAOGLU LEADING Essendon District Football League expert Matthew Pillios has been telling pundits his league is the state’s best outside the VFL for a while now. This Saturday afternoon at Visy Park, he and the EDFL have the perfect chance to prove it. The EDFL will take on the best of the neighbouring Northern Football League and will be led by Greenvale and Pascoe Vale premiership player, Denis Bicer. A final squad of 30 players was selected last week ahead of this weekend’s clash and includes several former AFL and VFL-listed players. Pillios told Star he saw Saturday’s clash as a chance for the EDFL to showcase itself as Victoria’s number one suburban league, and said he expected Bicer’s men to deliver - even if undermanned through injury and unavailability. “There are absolutely no excuses,” Pillios said. “We have the chance to prove
that we should be playing for the number one (ranking) in Victoria, despite up to 10 walk-up starters not being in the line-up. “I’m very impressed with the standard that’s in the squad, and I don’t see one weak link in our side.” Greenvale star Eric Kuret has been named captain for the oneoff clash. Keilor ruckman and last year’s Dick Reynolds Medallist Andrew Browne - who will this week be revealed as the EDFL’s number one player in Pillios’s annual top 50 list - will also take the field on Saturday. Pillios said Browne was an easy choice as the EDFL’s best current player. “He’s clearly the best player in the comp and was regarded in the top two by every senior coach I spoke with,” Pillios said. “The way he came and made an impact in his first year left me with no doubt he is the best player in the comp at the moment.”

Big dance a non-starter courtesy ‘morons’ By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final was abandoned and declared a draw on Sunday after the pitch was found to have been deliberately damaged before play. Both the Grand United and West Newport Cricket Clubs were called out to the Greenwich Reserve scene on Sunday morning with the game delicately poised after three days of play. By stumps on Saturday evening, West Newport was just one wicket away from victory with Grand United still needing an unlikely 92 runs for victory.
However, match and club officials arrived on Sunday morning to discover several holes across each popping crease. The covers that were in place overnight were also damaged and the roller that would have been used to repair the wicket was found broken and could not be used. Police were eventually called to the scene. On the day his club should have claimed the WDCA’s top prize, West Newport secretary Mick Jones said he was “absolutely disgusted” with the overnight shenanigans. “Overnight, we got the phone call saying that the
wicket got dug up so we went down there and just before the popping creases on both ends there were four-inch holes right across the whole wicket,” Jones explained. “It was someone who knows cricket because they knew where the wicket was, they knew how to pull the covers back, they pulled the covers back on and they even went to the length of taking the pieces of dirt and putting them in the water near The Strand. “So they knew exactly what they were doing.” Grand United president Daniel Gaylor described the culprits as “complete
morons” and said the book would be thrown at them if they’re found to have been members of his club. “We would obviously have a thorough investigation,” Gaylor said. “We would hope anyone found guilty of doing something like that either from our club or from another club would be given a life ban from the association and of course, from our club.” WDCA chairman Mark Keating said a determination on the result of the uncompleted match would be confirmed early this week.

Mitch’s life in the pool By LIAM TWOMEY FOUR times a week, Mitchell Davenport-Wright’s alarm will go off at 4:15am. Soon after, he’s in the water, swimming lap after lap before a full day at school followed by more training at night. While this may be daunting for some, Davenport-Wright is doing everything he can to become a champion. The 16-year-old is a rising star of the Australian swimming scene, winning over 80 state and 40 national medals throughout his junior career. He also claimed an open age National Title at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney last year. Not content with dominating one stroke, the Williamstown resident competes in the 400-metre individual medley event. “I swim more distance freestyle but you could say that my main event is more the 400 individual medley,” Davenport-Wright explained. “It is a hard event to train for when you consider that to get the full benefit out of the training session, you do the same thing the whole way through. It is about finding the balance of working on what I am not good at and leaving a bit less of what I am good at.” Davenport-Wright’s exploits

star haven’t gone unnoticed, with some of the best coaches in the sport quick to praise him. Former Australian national coach Ian Pope, who is also coaching Davenport-Wright at his club the Melbourne Vicentre, is rapt with the progress being made. “Mitch is one of the best male swimmers coming through in the Australian Age Team,” Pope said. “(He is) a young man that always gives his best in everything he undertakes, self-motivated and driven for the highest standard.” Davenport-Wright is now preparing for an even busier time than usual with the Commonwealth Games selection trials and the Australian Age Championships coming up. “I’m really looking forward to making the transition from being an age group swimmer to an open age swimmer at the Commonwealth Games trials,” he said. “As an age group swimmer you can swim easy in the mornings and make it through to the final but when it comes to open swims you
really need to put in for the morning and then try and back it up for the night. That is a big challenge for me.” Despite his already hectic schedule, there are no plans to slow down for Davenport-Wright who is targeting the ultimate success in his sport. “I think everyone looks towards the Olympics. It is definitely my goal,” he said. “I don’t set low standards. I want to be the best in the world. I want to hold a world record, I want to have an Olympic gold medal and if it’s possible, get as many as I can. I just need to take it step by step and see how long it takes me to get there.” For his outstanding sporting achievements Davenport-Wright has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Davenport-Wright will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. The Don Deeble Rising Star Award recognises young athletes in the Western Suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and national level.

Georgies go down to South Melbourne By ADEM SARICAOGLU SUNSHINE George Cross put up a good show but still couldn’t slay Victorian soccer powerhouse South Melbourne in the Dockerty Cup on Saturday. The game nearly went into extra time at Chaplin Reserve, with neither side managing to score the breakthrough goal. Eventually National Premier Leagues outfit South Melbourne scored the winner with a controversial penalty that Georgies coach Tony Ciantar described as “highway robbery”. However, despite the disappointing end to the clash, Ciantar was upbeat with his side’s efforts against top-flight opposition and said his boys would learn from the experience. “I thought our boys’ application was absolutely sensational,” Ciantar said. “Everything I’ve asked from the boys they’ve given me so far, so I really can’t ask for anything more and the result clearly showed how well they’re applying what I’m telling them to do.” Ciantar was left with a bitter taste in his mouth after South pursued an attack that led to the penalty. The play occurred moments after a George Cross player was brought down and the Georgies played the ball out. Ciantar said South “threw the code of fair play out the window” by

Despite the circumstances, Ciantar remained positive about his club’s handling of the situation and is now looking forward to continuing his side’s promising start when round two of NPL1 resumes this
Saturday away to Avondale Heights. “It just proves how much South Melbourne wanted to win that game and for my boys that’s what we take out of it,” Ciantar said. “They did come here with a full squad and to keep them at 0-0 for
the whole duration of the game - and we should’ve won the game during normal play - it put a sour end to the game. “But credit to the whole football club and my coaching staff for the discipline that was shown after the game.”
SOME of the best lawn bowlers in Melbourne’s West are hunting silverware this Easter. Clubs throughout the area are sending teams to country Victoria to compete for the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Shield. The event is run by the RSL Lawn Bowls Association and has over 1400 competitors each year. RSL Lawn Bowls secretary George Dyson said he was expecting a big weekend of competition. “There are between 1400 and 1500 bowlers who get together around Easter every year,” he said. “I think the goal is to go up there and have a good time with all the people that you meet. “There are some great people who play. If you win, it is just a bonus.” Clubs competing from the West include Footscray, Sunshine, Altona, Werribee, Melton and Keilor East. Dyson is hoping to take home the top title with his club, Sunshine. “We (Sunshine) have got two sides in,” he said. “In 2010 we were lucky enough to win it which was a big thrill. In 1977 Footscray won it so twice it has been won by Western Suburbs clubs in those years. “It was a great feeling. You need to win five games over the two days. If you don’t do that, you can still win your section but you can’t win the whole thing.” The Duke of Edinburgh Shield will be contested in early April.

Werribee’s one hope for flag WERRIBEE Cricket Club only managed to get one of their four senior teams through to this weekend’s grand final. The second XI got through but it was a very disappointing end to the season. The firsts dominated the competition until the final couple of games and will rue their lost chance at a flag. Heath Pritchard broke David Norman’s record taking 47 wickets for the season. Yarraville Club Cricket Club will be celebrating an unlikely flag win after beating South Caulfield by 40 runs in a nail-biting finish. They were incredible lucky to make the finals but to win it is a fairy tale finish. The Werribee second XI play this weekend at Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park. BOBBY Murphy played his 250th game for the Bulldogs last Sunday in their loss against the Eagles. I have been lucky to have done a fair bit with Bob during his 13 years at the Kennel. He has always been cheeky, witty, professional and personable off the field, and on field he is a genuinely great player. His articles for The Age are a must read even for those that don’t follow the Red White and Blue, and his recent work on Fox Footy is the same. He is a good storyteller and I have no doubt the media will form a big part of his post football life. His is a good story, his Mum was a nun and his Dad a priest. Yes you read correctly. He has hinted that he might go on past this season if he feels he can still contribute, but that is a decision he will make when the time is right. He is a champion bloke and a champion player, you can’t ask for much more. THERE was some star spotting going on at the opening of WYN City Bowl last Saturday in Point Cook. Former Collingwood champion Peter Daicos and his family enjoyed themselves and media star Denis Walter was there with his grandson. ‘Daics’ cut a fine figure trying his hand at bowling while Denis was seen eyeing off the bumper cars and laser tag. The centre is very impressive and will no doubt be very popular for birthday parties and celebrations for kids but I have to say it is an equally great venue for adults. Sarah and I had a ball. ALL roads lead to Visy Park this Saturday to see the WFL interleague team take on the Southern Footy League in the Metropolitan Championships starting at 11.15am. Coach Brett Jacobs is happy with his squad and their preparations and it is good to see clubs embracing the concept which will only grow in stature in the coming years. There is a good sprinkling of former AFL players in all the metro squads but I see this as something that local kids will aspire to in the future as the carnival develops. THE Western Jets started their season with a loss and this weekend Williamstown gets the VFL season underway taking on Box Hill Hawks. Werribee plays Sandringham at Moorabbin in a practice match on Saturday. Swim so special SPECIAL Olympics Melbourne West held its annual Aquatics Games at the Victoria University pool last week. With 90 swimmers with intellectual disability from nine Special Olympic regions around Victoria in attendance, the pool deck was afloat with eager participants and their equally enthusiastic cheer squads. The event was opened by State Labor MP Justin Madden, who stayed to hand out ribbons to the competitors. The swimmers were also delighted to have 2008 and 2012 backstroke Olympian Belinda Hocking in attendance.
Twenty swimmers from the Melbourne West region were proud to host the event at their main training pool and the crowd was thrilled with many close and exciting finishes. With 37 personal bests out of 57 individual events, the swimmers and their volunteer coaches are now preparing for the Special Olympic State Games which will be held on the first weekend in April. Melbourne West also had six swimmers (Danielle Williams, Deana Horvat, Brad Doolan, Ben Morrison, Travis Tankard and Patrick Getson) in the Victorian aquatic team for the Special Olympics Australia National Games.
The National Games will see athletes with intellectual disability from all over Australia participating in a range of sports in Melbourne for the week. The Melbourne West swimming group trains regularly at Victoria University and squads also operate at YMCA Derrimut and East Keilor Leisure Centre. The coaches are dedicated and teach people a wide range of skills to ensure swimmers feel comfortable and over time build up their confidence, swimming skills and fitness as well as make new friends.
