Lasting legacy By XAVIER SMERDON WHEN Clinton Matthews’ wife Caroline passed away from brain cancer two years ago, creating a legacy for her was the last thing on his mind. But in just a short amount of time, with the help of his sister Rebecca Picone, Clinton has managed to turn the worst time of his life into something truly inspirational. The siblings founded the Peace of Mind Foundation, which aims to increase awareness, support and funding of brain cancer research, six months ago. “Caroline was very outgoing, she was an extrovert and she was very passionate and positive throughout her journey with the cancer,” Mr Matthews said. “She never let the reality of the situation get in the way of helping others. “I think she would be fully supportive of us setting up this foundation in her name and if I was the one who had been sick then she would have done exactly the same thing for me.” Next month the foundation will host its first ever fund-raiser, with the aim of making more than $30,000, to support brain cancer sufferers and their families. And in an incredible gesture of love for his wife and the mother of his threeyear-old son, Mr Matthews has spent almost $15,000 out of his own money to get the fund-raiser off the ground. He will not even make any of the money back with 100 per cent of the proceeds raised from the event going straight to the charity. “It’s something that I feel that strongly about and I just want to help other people now,” he said. “If we can make even a little difference then it will all be worth it.” Ms Picone said the main goal of the event would be to raise community awareness of the lack of support available for people suffering from brain cancer.

“There is a major lack of support out there for people and while brain cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, it is also one of the most underfunded. “We want to promote awareness about this and be able to hopefully provoke change.”

A NEW partnership between the world’s largest independent designer and manufacturer of diesel engines and a Wyndham school is set to create more local jobs. Point Cook Senior Secondary College and Cummins South Pacific officially launched a new partnership last Thursday when Cummins donated two diesel engines. Cummins Regional Apprentice Manager, Kate Cummins, said the equipment will be used in the Point Cook Senior Secondary College Trade Training Centre. “Our aim is to influence the career pathways of students and recruit these students directly to Cummins’ apprentice program,” Ms Evans said. “Industry engagement with schools is vital to building a strong pipeline of skilled workers, with research showing that employers and schools must connect early and often to achieve the best outcomes.” “The new Trade Training Centre at Point Cook provides the ideal opportunity for Cummins’ Young Ambassadors to

ROADS were the topic of the week with the launch of the Get Wyndham Moving campaign last Thursday night. About 250 residents attended and heard from some experts regarding our massive road problems. It was ironic that a three car collision on Forsyth Rd held up traffic on the freeway and many people heading to the meeting were held up. The council is investing a huge stake in this campaign and needs the support of everyone to make it work. I think it is a great idea, though I do have a few observations. Slogans have a place, forums have a place, outside views and opinions have a place, but solutions are a priority. People power does change the agenda as we saw with the Toxic Dump, and hopefully we will see with the Tip Mountain. The common denominator of course is power and money. We don’t have enough of either at the moment to effect change. We didn’t when we had the Prime Minister as our Federal representative, so what chance do we really have. I am interested to see the next step in this campaign. Still on roads, a new pedestrian crossing has been installed on Morris Rd near the Bellbridge Drive intersection, but I am not sure what the objective is. I will let you know if it has any positive effect. Your thoughts are welcome.

MY email ran hot with both pros and cons for the recent ‘Live on the Lawn’ show in the grounds of the Mansion. Many were upset about paying $5 for parking, which I can understand, and a few voiced dismay about the limit of alcohol that you could take in. I have no problem with the latter, and in fact you could easily raise an argument for the event to be alcohol free, which I am sure, would get good support. From what I have been told a happy medium seems to have been reached, and everyone should be able to live with that. I think the event is a beauty, and hope it continues for many years to come. The more people that are drawn to the Mansion precinct the better. YOU see some funny things while driving around our city. The other day in Railway Ave I saw a bloke jogging past the cemetery wearing what could only be described as a large breathing device. It was not unlike those seen in mines or during the war. Wyndham ranks high in lost super stakes Finn’s outburst By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM residents are missing out on almost $100 million of their own money, according to the latest figures from the Australian Taxation Office. Werribee residents were missing a total of $46.9 million in lost superannuation accounts, the highest amount of any area in Victoria, while Hoppers Crossing residents were missing out on $36 million, the

third highest in the state. The $96 million missing throughout Wyndham could be tied back to 13,354 lost super accounts with an average of $7252 in them. The Deputy Commissioner of Superannuation, Alison Lendon, said Wyndham residents were missing out on claiming their own money. “If you found $50 in the pocket of your old coat, it would make your

day. But 1.9 million Australians have an average of $8,368 waiting to be found and claimed - which is a lot more than a forgotten banknote,” Ms Lendon said. “Finding your lost super and rolling it into your active super fund could give your retirement savings a significant boost. Thanks to recent changes to super, it’s easier than ever to find and claim your own money.” Ms Lendon said since 31 May

last year, any amount of lost super that added up to $2000 was being transferred from super funds to the ATO which would hold the money until residents claimed it, to protect the money from being eroded by fees and charges. goes worldwide By XAVIER SMERDON A WESTERN Suburbs politician has made international headlines after sharing his controversial views on abortion. Liberal Upper House Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Bernie Finn, told Star last week that there was no acceptable reason for a woman to have an abortion, even if she was raped. “I think many rapists and particularly paedophiles use abortion as a defence, they use it as a way to destroy the evidence,” Mr Finn told Star in an article published on Tuesday 18 March. “I’ve spoken to a number of women who have been raped and then had an abortion and they told me that from their point of view having an abortion was like being raped a second time.” Mr Finn, who has never shied away from sharing his conservative views, organises the March for the Babies every year. His comments were quick to draw criticism however, with Premier Napthine forced to publicly distance himself from them. Dr Napthine said he had spoken to his colleague and informed him that his comments were distracting from the work the Liberal Government was doing. The news quickly spread throughout Australia and by Wednesday morning it had become the topic of conversation on news websites in England and the USA. Australia’s largest blog on female issues, Mamamia, posted a response to Mr Finn’s comments that quickly went viral on social media. “Sarcasm and utter despair aside, this kind of rhetoric from an elected member of parliament is quite simply disgusting. To use Mr Finn’s words ‘in this day and age’ it’s hard to swallow the fact that there is still anyone in the community who thinks in this way about a woman’s right to choose - let alone share those thoughts with the press,” the blog read.

Guns, drugs seized By XAVIER SMERDON SEVEN hundred police raided properties, seized weapons, drugs and stolen items across the Western Suburbs, including Melton last week in one of the biggest operations seen in the area. Twenty-four people were arrested after police raided 45 properties in 23 suburbs including Altona, Altona North, Williamstown North, Williamstown, Truganina, Sunshine, Sunshine North, Mill Park, Hillside, Keilor Downs, Tarneit, Corio, Melton South, Broadmeadows, Meadow Heights, Kingsville South, Point Cook, Altona Meadows, Albion, Cairnlea, Sunshine West and Maribyrnong. The operation, known as Sky-

borne, was launched by Taskforce Santiago following investigations into crime syndicates in Melbourne. Assistant Commissioner of Victoria Police Stephen Fontana said people arrested were ringleaders and members of a “well-known Middle Eastern family-based crime syndicate”. “This was a high-risk operation, there was a number of individuals there that we considered to be extremely dangerous and we had the special operations group conduct three of those particular arrests for us and we had the critical incident response team conduct another three arrests, so we’re very happy that none of our members have been injured nor have any of the

people that have been taken into custody,” Mr Fontana said. “It’s a Middle Eastern crime syndicate, it’s a well-known family-based syndicate, I think you’d probably know the names of them and they will appear in court at a later time. “They’ve been involved in a range of criminal activities over the years, and particularly commercial drug trafficking and firearms trafficking.” Mr Fontana said police seized drugs including 100kg of dried cannabis, more than 12 firearms including a handgun with a silencer and a high-powered assault rifle, $55,000 cash, ammunition, vehicles and stolen property during the raids.

“The investigation’s been going since late last year into this particular syndicate. The commencement of the operation today, we basically went there with enough evidence to charge 19 individuals,” he said. “It’s been a real bonus in terms of what we’ve found at these particular addresses, so there will be additional charges and additional people charged as well, which was unexpected at the time. “We’ve charged a number of significant individuals that we consider were leading this syndicate. As you know when you take a group of individuals out there’s always someone to fill the void later down the track, so we’ll continue our investigations.”

A SEABROOK teenager is hoping to make a difference in a special little girl’s life. After hearing of the traumatic plight of the Miller family in Wyndham Vale, Bayside College student James Sayer decided to co-ordinate various activities at his school in a bid to raise much-needed funds for the family. The 16-year-old has worked tirelessly to get the whole school community on board and will see his hard work come to fruition this Friday with an out of uniform day and sausage sizzle. “It touched my heart and brought me to tears,” James told Star. “I have a little sister and if it happened to her, it would absolutely break my heart. “We have to do anything we can to help them.” Last October little Alexandra, now 5, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), an extremely rare tumour located in the middle of the brain stem.

Her distraught parents Andrew and Eva were given the devastating news that the tumour, which only affects children, is incurable and their beloved daughter may only live for up to two more years. “When the doctors gave us the news it tore our hearts out,” an emotional Mr Miller said. “She will eventually lose all of her motor skills and will be hospitalised.” Alex immediately received radiation therapy but the family was told this was only a temporary solution and would stunt the growth of the tumour briefly.

“We try not to think about it… and give her the best life we can give her.” Mr Miller realises this would not be possible without the support of the wider community. “We’re so proud that she has the opportunity to do these things… (the support) is overwhelming, humbling. I’m lost for words. It is the Aussie spirit coming out in everyone.” And it seems this spirit is not lost on little Alex who is described by her doting father as “fun, outgoing, bubbly and always laughing”. “She just loves life, it’s fantastic to see her that way. We love her to bits.” The family also recently received help from Quality Suites D’Olive Receptions who raised just over $9,000 at a family fun day. The hotel’s manager Janette Godden said the business had an overwhelming amount of support from the community and also held a Women’s Business Lunch, which bought the total funds raised to $12,000.

A WERRIBEE man has brought his imagination to life in the form of a children’s book. Mat Wright, who works as a driver, admits he had always loved writing - especially creatively. As a teenager he used to write songs and lyrics for his high school rock band and now thanks to the inspiration from his daughter Meredith he has brought to life Honky the frog in the book Honky the Frog and the Friends of Wonky Pond. “It was really exciting and really interesting,” Mr Wright said. “And it was good because I was able to share (the experience) with my family and kids,” he said. Growing up his eldest daughter Meredith referred to everything as “Honk” which soon turned into a little game between the father and daughter who started calling each other “Honky”. Honky the Frog developed from there and soon Wonky the Pond and the rest of the characters and scenes were alive too. “The ideas and the characters and the concept had been there for about 18 months,” Mr Wright said. “It was just something that I wanted to achieve.” Mr Wright hoped the book would one day be loved and shared worldwide and fantasised with idea that it could also appear as a cartoon series or movie in the future. “My aim is for it to be one of those books that is in community libraries and in schools forever,” he said.

“I do a lot of local scenes. We have such wonderful inspiration around us,” Ms Rogers said. “I really like to capture the beauty of creation and show the light, hope, serenity and peace that nature can create. “I think that the water in particular creates a beautiful sense of peace.” Her subjects are not only restricted to Werribee and the rest of the West, with her background of living in country Victoria also showing through in several paintings. Ms Rogers said for her painting was a way to escape the

stresses of everyday life. “When I’m painting it’s like I’m in a completely different world,” she said. “I do find there’s a peace in painting and I guess it just comes from within.” Ms Rogers works will be on display at Art in Public Places in Hobsons Bay next month. MOVEMENT towards less red tape in the home building industry aims to reduce costs for small business principal contractors and builders. Housing Industry Association, the voice of Australia’s $70 billion home building industry, has welcomed progress on the Federal Government’s red tape reduction agenda, including the introduction of a new deregulation website and biannual Parliamentary ‘repeal days’. HIA chief of industry policy and media Graham Wolfe said: “Inefficient and unnecessary regulation is a real bugbear of the building industry and adds costs to building a new home. “The allocation of Parliamentary sitting time to freeing up builders and the economy by reducing laws, rather than introducing new ones, shows a genuine commitment by government to addressing this chronic problem.” According to Mr Wolfe, one of the obvious examples of this was the Australian Tax Office contractor reporting requirements placed on the home building industry. He said it unfairly transferred the burden of information collection from the tax office onto small business principal contractors and builders, imposing considerable additional administrative and accounting red tape. “In 2011, Treasury estimated a one-off cost of $90 would be borne by businesses required to prepare and lodge a report. “However, HIA builder members

advised that, on average, they spent an additional 17.8 hours on paperwork as a result of the new regulations and incurred extra costs of $1621,” Mr Wolfe said. Chief executive of Master Builders Australia Wilhelm Harnisch said that red tape may sound mundane

until it is connected with business people spending hours grappling with excessive paperwork instead of directing their energies to the productivity of their businesses and creating new jobs. “Building and construction is one of Australia’s most intensely

regulated industries and the nation’s third largest employer. “Cutting red tape will boost the productivity of the industry allowing it to generate more jobs and provide better value to consumers,” he said.

Dogs win slot By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has qualified for the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final after defeating Geelong by 24 runs. Hosting the game at Mervyn Hughes Oval, Footscray captain Dean Russ won the toss and elected to bat on day one. After powering through their first final, the Bulldogs didn’t have things all their own way as a fired-up Geelong bowling attack made early strikes. The Cats removed Anthony Barton, Travis Dean and John Hastings cheaply to leave Footscray in trouble at 3/35. Through Russ and wicket keeper Dylan Kight, Footscray battled back, adding 50 for the fourth wicket. However, there was more trouble to follow with both set batsmen sent on their way within 13 runs of each other to leave the score at 5/98. Australian under 19 representative Guy Walker then showed his talents, batting brilliantly on his way to 51. He was well supported by Shanuka Dissanayaka with the pair edging the total towards 200. With all the recognised batsmen back in the sheds, the Footscray tail did its best to keep the scoreboard ticking over. They combined for a valuable 20 before the wicket of Michael Kelly ended the innings.

That left Geelong needing 219 to seal the win and the Cats’ chase got off to a strong start. Geelong moved to 4/161, leaving the batting side needing 57 runs with six wickets in hand. It may have looked an easy task on paper, but it proved just the opposite as Hastings wreaked havoc with the ball. He combined with Jake Haberfield to blitz through the Geelong lower order. At one stage, the Cats lost 4/2 and were eventually bowled out for 194 in the 66th over. Hastings finished the innings with the outstanding figures of 5/45 while Haberfield took 4/81. Tigers fall at the final hurdle By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE’S hopes of winning the Victorian SubDistrict Cricket Association premiership were dashed on Sunday, with the Tigers going down in the last over of the day at the hands of Noble Park. After being set 187 to win by Noble Park, the Tigers battled hard all day as the momentum of the match switched between both teams. At 7/160, Werribee looked to be marginally ahead, with captain Shaun Dean set at the crease. However, Dean was dismissed for 52 soon after, leaving the Tigers’ tail with a lot of work to do. Going into the last over, Werribee needed nine runs to win with two wickets in hand.

Heath Pritchard ensured his team would have every chance of reaching the target when he smashed the first ball of the over for four. However, he was stumped one ball later, leaving the equation at five runs needed from four balls. Two dot balls followed before a two off the fifth ball of the over made the equation three required off the last ball. THE Williamstown and District Cricket Association’s A Turf grand final was abandoned and declared a draw on Sunday after the pitch was found to have been deliberately damaged before play. Both the Grand United and West Newport Cricket Clubs were called out to the Greenwich Reserve scene on Sunday morning with the game delicately poised after three days of play. By stumps on Saturday evening, West Newport was just one wicket away from victory with Grand United still needing an unlikely 92 runs for victory. However, match and club officials arrived on Sunday morning to discover several holes across each popping crease. The covers that were in place overnight were also damaged and the roller that would have been used to repair the wicket was found broken and could not be used. Police were eventually called to the scene. On the day his club should have claimed the WDCA’s top prize, West Newport secretary Mick Jones said he was “absolutely disgusted” with the overnight shenanigans. “Overnight, we got the phone call saying that the wicket got dug up so we went down there and just before the popping creases on both ends there were four-inch holes right across the whole wicket,” Jones explained. “It was someone who knows cricket because they knew where the wicket was, they knew how to pull the covers back, they pulled the covers back on and they even went to the length of taking the pieces of dirt and putting them in the water near The Strand. “So they knew exactly what they were doing.” Grand United president Daniel Gaylor described the culprits as “complete morons” and said the book would be thrown at them if they’re found to have been members of his club. “We would obviously have a thorough investigation,” Gaylor said. “We would hope anyone found guilty of doing something like that either from our club or from another club would be given a life ban from the association and of course, from our club.” WDCA chairman Mark Keating said a determination on the result of the uncompleted match would be confirmed early this week.

FOUR times a week, Mitchell Davenport-Wright’s alarm will go off at 4:15am. Soon after, he’s in the water, swimming lap after lap before a full day at school followed by more training at night. While this may be daunting for some, Davenport-Wright is doing everything he can to become a champion. The 16-year-old is a rising star of the Australian swimming scene, winning over 80 state and 40 national medals throughout his junior career. He also claimed an open age National Title at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney last year. Not content with dominating one stroke, the Williamstown resident competes in the 400-metre individual medley event. “I swim more distance freestyle but you could say that my main event is more the 400 individual medley,” Davenport-Wright explained. “It is a hard event to train for when you consider that to get the full benefit out of the training session, you do the same thing the whole way through. It is about finding the balance of working on what I am not good at and leaving a bit less of what I am good at.” Davenport-Wright’s exploits haven’t

Former Australian national coach Ian Pope, who is also coaching Davenport-Wright at his club the Melbourne Vicentre, is rapt with the progress being made. “Mitch is one of the best male swimmers coming through in the Australian Age Team,” Pope said. “(He is) a young man that always gives his best in everything he undertakes, self-motivated and driven for the highest standard.” Davenport-Wright is now preparing for an even busier time than usual with the Commonwealth Games selection trials and the Australian Age Championships coming up. “I’m really looking forward to making the transition from being an age group swimmer to an open age swimmer at the Commonwealth Games trials,” he said. “As an age group swimmer you can swim easy in the mornings and make it

through to the final but when it comes to open swims you really need to put in for the morning and then try and back it up for the night. That is a big challenge for me.” Despite his already hectic schedule, there are no plans to slow down for Davenport-Wright who is targeting the ultimate success in his sport. “I think everyone looks towards the Olympics. It is definitely my goal,” he said. “I don’t set low standards. I want to be the best in the world. I want to hold a world record, I want to have an Olympic gold medal and if it’s possible, get as many as I can. I just need to take it step by step and see how long it takes me to get there.” For his outstanding sporting achievements Davenport-Wright has been named this month’s Don Deeble Rising Star nominee. The award is run by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with the Star News Group. Davenport-Wright will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his future sporting goals. hope for flag WERRIBEE Cricket Club only managed to get one of their four senior teams through to this weekend’s grand final. The second XI got through but it was a very disappointing end to the season. The firsts dominated the competition until the final couple of games and will rue their lost chance at a flag. Heath Pritchard broke David Norman’s record taking 47 wickets for the season. Yarraville Club Cricket Club will be celebrating an unlikely flag win after beating South Caulfield by 40 runs in a nail-biting finish. They were incredible lucky to make the finals but to win it is a fairy tale finish. The Werribee second XI play this weekend at Avalon Airport Oval at Chirnside Park. BOBBY Murphy played his 250th game for the Bulldogs last Sunday in their loss against the Eagles. I have been lucky to have done a fair bit with Bob during his 13 years at the Kennel. He has always been cheeky, witty, professional and personable off the field, and on field he is a genuinely great player. His articles for The Age are a must read even for those that don’t follow the Red White and Blue, and his recent work on Fox Footy is the same. He is a good storyteller and I have no doubt the media will form a big part of his post football life. His is a good story, his Mum was a nun and his Dad a priest. Yes you read correctly. He has hinted that he might go on past this season if he feels he can still contribute, but that is a decision he will make when the time is right. He is a champion bloke and a champion player, you can’t ask for much more. THERE was some star spotting going on at the opening of WYN City Bowl last Saturday in Point Cook. Former Collingwood champion Peter Daicos and his family enjoyed themselves and media star Denis Walter was there with his grandson. ‘Daics’ cut a fine figure trying his hand at bowling while Denis was seen eyeing off the bumper cars and laser tag. The centre is very impressive and will no doubt be very popular for birthday parties and celebrations for kids but I have to say it is an equally great venue for adults. Sarah and I had a ball. ALL roads lead to Visy Park this Saturday to see the WFL interleague team take on the Southern Footy League in the Metropolitan Championships starting at 11.15am. Coach Brett Jacobs is happy with his squad and their preparations and it is good to see clubs embracing the concept which will only grow in stature in the coming years. There is a good sprinkling of former AFL players in all the metro squads but I see this as something that local kids will aspire to in the future as the carnival develops. THE Western Jets started their season with a loss and this weekend Williamstown gets the VFL season underway taking on Box Hill Hawks. Werribee plays Sandringham at Moorabbin in a practice match on Saturday. DARREL Brown’s final summer in charge of Hoppers Crossing did not exactly go to plan. Brown was eyeing off a finals berth in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s Senior Division, but the young Cats fell agonisingly short by season’s end, finishing seventh and only less than five points away from fourth-placed Yarraville Club. A couple of close calls and perhaps one or two dodgy decisions seemed to go against Hoppers Crossing’s plight, but Brown is the first to admit his Cats needed better contributions with the bat this summer. “Obviously, it could have gone a lot better since a lot of things didn’t go our way,” Brown said. “We needed a few more runs, and in some instances there was a lot of misfortune in terms of umpiring decisions not going our way. “But the one thing I must say we improved on was our fielding. Over the last two years before this year, almost every game we had about three or four catches go down and probably out of the whole season we only dropped about three catches, and they were difficult ones as well. “So that was a big improvement, but the bowling was pretty good as well.” Prior to the start of the season, all the way back in October, Brown put the acid on his team to push for the top four. Though the Cats ultimately fell short, Brown told Star it was an enjoyable summer and an important

one for the development of some of the club’s young stars - including Ryan Latham and Cam Nicol. “The guys really came out and worked hard,” he said. “It was just a year of bad luck,

but the thing about it is the guys were really upbeat, and I must say this was probably one of the best years I’ve played cricket. “It was just pure fun. When we lost, we just took it on the chin and moved on.”

Leading the charge By LIAM TWOMEY THEY are the biggest club in one of the fastest growing areas of Australia. Plying their trade out of Chirnside Park, the Werribee Football Club is the pride of the Wyndham community. But with great power comes great responsibility. As the population in Melbourne’s West continues to expand, the Tigers are at the forefront of promoting Aussie Rules. While some may be daunted by the task at hand, Werribee is meeting the challenge head on. “It is a huge challenge,” Tigers’ CEO Mark Penaluna said. “In the last couple of years we have seen the Tarneit Titans come up, we have seen the Wyndham Suns (form), Werribee Districts have come back to local footy and Manor Lakes have formed. “You can just see how the game is going to evolve. “I think the council has got on its long term projects for 15 or 20 new footy grounds to be built over the next five or six years. We want to be across all that. “We could have taken the soft option and aligned ourselves just with one particular club but we wanted to be a club that supports all footy in the area.” One of the main focuses for the offfield development team at Werribee is centred on introducing culturally and linguistically diverse groups to AFL football. The Tigers employ three people to manage the area, by far the most of any VFL club in the competition. They are led by Werribee community development manager Chris Gal-

For the primary school kids, that finishes up with a visit to North Melbourne Football Club and they get to go through their facilities. With the secondary schools, we are going to be running football participation programs aimed at English as a second language schools. We are targeting four schools - MacKillop, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Wyndham Central. “This is the first time we are doing secondary schools. “We are trying to get people involved with sport. We want to teach them the basic skills and then ultimately try to get them involved at local level.” One man who has seen the benefits

of becoming involved in Aussie Rules first hand is Werribee’s multicultural development officer Majok “Shaggy” Ngong. Ngong was born in Southern Sudan and moved to Australia in 2005 with his family. Despite having no previous AFL experience, he quickly took to all parts of the game both on and off the field. As well as playing locally, he also volunteered as an AFL Multicultural Community Ambassador before accepting the role with the Tigers. Ngong highlighted the contribution Werribee local and North Melbourne AFL-listed player Majak Daw has made encouraging multicultural communities to the game. Through Werribee’s alignment with the Kangaroos, Daw has been able to play VFL football for the Tigers for the past three years as he continues his development. “He (Daw) is taking on a big role and every kid is looking at him no mat-

ter if they are playing basketball, soccer, football or any other sport,” Ngong said. “He is the main man who is standing out around the country. You have kids that look up to him and he is a great role model. “It has been great the way he has carried himself. He knows he has the whole country behind him. He has been a really big influence on the kids to stay motivated and achieve what they want to.” Despite the good work already completed by Werribee, there are absolutely no plans to slow down any time soon. And it isn’t just football where the club is showing its community leadership. Another program the Tigers are running is the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project which encourages youth from ethnic or diverse cultural backgrounds to get involved in all sport. The project also aims to understand the barriers that prevent these groups from playing sport and how they can be alleviated. AFL Victoria infrastructure and planning manager Ricky Bell applauded the Tigers for their commitment to the Wyndham area. “To have a state league level team based strategically in the region is really important,” Bell said. “You not only have the inspirational goal from a playing perspective but just as important is the effort they put into the community in helping to grow the game. “Whether it is the work they do with Auskick or with multicultural communities to help increase participation ... it is very important for the game.”
