Electric buses - talks underway
JIM FAGAN
A vision of Noosa-style electric buses transporting passengers for free was described to Noosa Council’s infrastructure and services committee by Mayor Noel Playford on Tuesday.
And he gave an indication that the future
may not be too far away when he revealed discussions have already been held with the Queensland major bus transport and bus manufacturing company, Transit Australia, and “they were interested.” He told Councillors Sandy Bolton (acting chairman) and Frank Pardon that in two weeks’ time he and council’s interim director of community infrastructure, Martin Drydale, were
meeting senior executives of Translink, council’s public transport provider, and “we have a reasonable chance of pulling something off in the not too distant future.” Mr Playford was commenting on a recommendation to the committee by project design and delivery co-ordinator Ross Sanderson that all works at the Noosa Parade bus facility, including pavement overlays, be put on hold until
planning is carried out and agreement reached in the area between Noosa Lions Park and the “Maze” car park. This included a $300,000 plan to provide cycle lanes in Noosa Parade between Noosa Drive and the entrance to Lions Park.

Noosa can make a difference ISOBEL COLEMAN
Noosa Shire’s role in reducing road deaths in Queensland is just as crucial as any major city, according to Victoria Cross recipient Corporal Ben RobertsSmith.
And although he is yet to visit Noosa, he is happy to be one of the state’s newest residents, having just moved from Perth to Queensland. Corporal Roberts-Smith is leading a major Queensland Police campaign to improve driver safety and reduce road deaths. His participation has been welcomed by Police Minister Jack Dempsey, who said he was thrilled that an Australian hero had backed the important life-saving initiative. But the facts behind the campaign are grim. The Central Region recorded the most deaths of any region in Queensland in 2013. Targetting the Fatal Five behaviours, Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the message was clear. “If you speed, drink drive, don’t pay attention, don’t wear a seatbelt or drive while tired you will not only be caught by police, but you risk your life and the life of every other road user – and that is not acceptable,” he said. “I am passionate about road safety.
Cyclists, motorists now face same fines JOLENE OGLE As Transport Minister Scott Emerson announced new road laws this week, Noosa cyclists told Noosa Today they were “sick of being treated as second class citizens”.
Under the new laws, which come into force on April 7, cyclists will face the same penalties as motorists and must share the same rules. Mr Emerson said the twoyear trial of the new laws would encourage better sharing of the road between motorists and cyclists, as well as increasing road safety. “Tragically, 13 cyclists were killed on Queensland roads in 2013, so action was needed,” Mr Emerson said. The new laws will require motorists to allow a minimum of one metre when passing cyclists, and a minimum of a metre-and-ahalf when the speed limit is over 60km/h. The new rules will also allow motorists to cross centre lines and painted traffic islands to pass cy-
clists, if safe to do so. Mr Emerson said fines for cyclists doing the wrong thing would be increased to the same level as motorists. “Up until now, there have been different fines for motorists and cyclists for the same offence,” he said. “No matter the number of wheels, whether two, four or more, the rules are the same now and the fines are too.” The new laws come amid recent shocking footage of a cyclist being deliberately mowed down and another rider violently colliding with a taxi door that has been seen nationwide. Local cyclists have added to the ongoing feud between cyclists and motorists. In a letter to the editor, a Noosa man said he was knocked off his bicycle and left with a sprained wrist, injured hip, broken helmet and damaged bike, when riding on Noosa Parade last week. The man said he was appalled there is no bicycle facility on Noosa Parade, what he considers a popular cycling route used by people of all ages.
The rules are the same now - and the fines are too.

Road trauma has affected me like it has so many people in Australia. I understand what it’s like to lose mates to a road crash,” Roberts-Smith told Noosa Today. “It changes lives forever. The saddest and most frustrating thing is that many of these deaths and injuries are preventable.
“Noosa has a part to play in road safety. Due to road crashes, almost 300 people are killed on Queensland roads and on average a further 6500 people are hospitalised each year. This campaign is aimed at forging strong partnerships across the whole community in recognising our shared responsibility in preventing road trauma – all road trauma.”

At about 3.30am, police attended the Saint Andrews Drive store, following reports of multiple alarm activations and found the front door smashed in. Police believe two or three men dressed in hooded jumpers forced entry by reversing a utility through the door, before trying to drag away the ATM with a large chain. The men left the store empty handed and police investigations are continuing. Anyone with information that could assist with the police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Swinging days of summer over for kids? JIM FAGAN The days of swinging from tree ropes and splashing into Weyba Creek could be over for local kids if the infrastructure and services committee’s recommendation to Council is upheld.
Weyba Creek Esplanade contains a narrow strip of bushland and current public access is causing local complaints about people jumping from the Weyba Creek footbridge and rope swings on the eastern bank. Environment officer Jan Maddin told the committee there were now five rope swings
hanging from branches. Also, other complaints were that people camped for up to eight days; bollard barriers were removed to allow cars to park further into the Reserve, and the creek banks near Leslie Drive were suffering serious erosion. The ‘swing trees’ would most likely fall soon and lead to more bank collapse. “When one or more of the trees fall it will cause further hazards in the stream, potentially rendering this particular area unsafe for recreational use such as swimming, boating and canoeing. “The likely cost of removing trees which become hazards will be significantly higher.” Among the options recommended to the

ed from Wallace Park, Noosaville. Earlier this month Noosa Council discussed Earl Street as a site for the cottage but agreed the potential future Gibson Road extension, included in the council’s transport network planning, could prevent this happening. On Tuesday the infrastructure and services committee received a report from council’s planning and infrastructure officer, Odd Bjorn Ludvigsen, stating that based on road network capacity issues for the next 20 years the construction of the extension should be deferred until all stages of Eenie Creek Road had been constructed. The general committee will discuss the report on Monday.

Council set to reject Noosa on Weyba RIGHT
Noosa Council’s senior development planner Denis Wallace has recommended the development application by Northbrook Corporation Pty Ltd be refused, including “significant environmental and social risks” among the 17 reasons for his assessment. And the first step towards the council accepting the recommendation was made on Tuesday when the council’s planning and organisation committee, Chairman Frank Wilkie, Noel Playford, Tony Wellington and Joe Jurisevic decided to support the recommendation and forward it to the council’s general committee which meets this Monday. The development is for a mix of residential, community and commercial dwellings to be built on land south of Noosaville adjoining Lake Weyba. The development site has about 400m of direct lake frontage. At least 10 community groups have objected to the development and only 37 of 1068 submissions received by council have been in favour. Cr Wilkie said it was a significant application with up to 1000 dwellings and 2300 people in the footprint, this to be offset with the proposal of 140 hectares of land being given over to Noosa National Park. Cr Tony Wellington: “There is no net gain for koalas and biodiversity
MAKE PEACE, NOT NOISE, SOUGHT FOR ISLAND Makepeace Island in Noosa River may be heart-shaped but there will be no love lost between owner Sir Richard Branson and Noosa Council if councillors accept the recommendation of its Planning and Organisation Committee and its officers. Sir Richard’s company, Make-
peace Island (Operations) Pty Ltd wants to convert the 9.3 hectare island into a boutique resort and just before de-amalgamation received approval from Sunshine Coast Council, subject to conditions which limited guests to 20 and made clear amplified music must not be audible between 10pm and 7am. On Tuesday the council’s development assessment co-ordinator, Kerri Coyle, told the committee the applicant had lodged an appeal with the Planning and Environment Court submitting the conditions were unlawful and were an “unreasonable imposition.” In her report Ms Coyle said the two conditions were considered critical to restrict noise emissions to protect the amenity of neighbouring residents. The closest residential properties were just 200 metres to the west in Cambridge Court, Tewantin. “The applicant’s noise report used the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing criteria for amplified music,” Ms Coyle said.“This is generally only suitable for entertainment precincts where pubs and clubs usually establish. This is not appropriate for the area given the closeness of residential properties and inconsistent with the Noosa Plan for the area.” The committee endorsed her recommendation to defend the appeal. It will now be discussed by the general committee on Monday. Makepeace Island was bought in 2007 and completed in 2009 as a private retreat for family and friends
Electric buses talks underway FROM PAGE 1 According to Mr Sanderson, Noosa Parade Transit Hub was the second most important stop within Noosa Shire with more than 140,000 people using it in a 12-month period. The Noosa Junction Transit Centre had shifted some demand but the attractions of Hastings Street, Main Beach and Noosa National Park were causing it to remain popular with bus passengers. Mr Playford said: “We have talked about it for 30 years that it would be nice to have a Noosa-style bus service. Most of us have understood it is probably pie in the sky but I don’t think it
is any more. There are electric buses running all over the world and we’ve got a particular situation that actually lends itself to doing that in a relatively confined urban area. “The improvements in electric vehicles and battery technology in recent years are such it will be a relatively short space of time before you’ll find electric buses everywhere in the world including Australia. “Not too far down the track, we may end up with a smaller, local electric bus system and that could mean a huge change to the transport hubs with more people using buses, particularly if they are free.”

CREDIT CARD SURCHARGE FAVOURED Noosa Council is expected to introduce a credit card surcharge of 0.55 per cent on all Visa and MasterCard payments as soon as possible. Co-ordinator of financial services Wayne Jensen told the planning and organisation committee on Tuesday council had paid about $50,000 in bank and merchant fees to date with a significant portion of these fees relating to credit card payments. Under Reserve Bank guidelines, council was able to recover actual costs of card acceptance and it was proposed to impose a surcharge of 0.55 per cent which compared favourably with the current average merchant fee of 0.83 per cent. He said with more and more people using credit cards for the payment of rates and charges, and with many merchants imposing a range of card surcharges, it was not expected there would be any consumer backlash. “The council’s annual budget is expected to yield $75 million in rates, charges and fees. If 30 per cent of all payments are made on credit cards, the proposed surcharge will recover costs of $123,750,” Mr Jensen said. The committee agreed to refer the recommendation to Monday’s meeting of the council’s general committee.
Running to help the occupants he noticed another two vehicles had also collided. Mr Corcoran helped the front passengers out and then went to the aid of the female passenger in the rear seat who appeared to have sustained a head injury. Moving to the other vehicle he realised it was on fire with the driver trapped inside. Grabbing a fire extinguisher from a truck driver he extinguished the flames and dragged the injured woman to safety. For his actions, Mr Corcoran this week received a Commendation for Brave Conduct award from the Governor-General. your say! Malicious

as a result of the offset because the land itself is already constrained for development. There is a net deficit to koalas because of the development itself and a roadway through the koala corridor.” Among the reasons for his assessment, Mr Wallace noted: “The site is ecologically constrained and drains into the highly sensitive receiving wetlands and waterways of the Lake Weyba and Noosa River systems. “A number of desirable sustainability measures are posed but, overall, the assessment finds significant environmental risks and social risks are posed. “The proposal seeks to modify the landform through major earthworks and clear all vegetation within urban precincts to provide for intensive residential development. This approach is not considered to appropriately respond to the site’s environmental, natural resource, open space and Aboriginal cultural heritage values and constraints. “Community benefits posed are considered to be either minor or significantly outweighed by the development’s impacts,” Mr Wallace said.

Premier’s plan to make it a Safe Night Out
JANE
JOLENE OGLE
GOODALL
Premier Campbell Newman is calling on all Queenslanders to have their say on the new Safe Night Out Strategy, released this week.
The strategy is designed to restore responsible behaviour and respect for others, help stop alcohol and drug-related violence as well as ensure the local nightlife is safe for all. The strategy states bad behaviour won’t be tolerated, with tougher penalties for violent and anti-social behaviour in and around licensed venues proposed, as well as community service and compulsory alcohol and drug counseling/rehabilitation for offenders. The Safe Night Out strategy would also include changes to laws so it is easier to prosecute irresponsible licensees, as well as increase police power and resources for a faster response to alcohol and drug-related violence. The release of the strategy comes amid public outrage last week at a “slap-on-the-wrist” sentence for a coward punch that left the victim with almost $24,000 damage to his face.
CELEBRATING HER 80TH YEAR AUSTRALIA ZOO
at Controversial magistrate Bernadette Callaghan sentenced law graduate Virgil Macquarie Power, 29, to 240 hours community service, without a conviction, after he punched Michael Halbauer, 23, in the face, while out at a Noosa venue in September. In her sentencing, Ms Callaghan said she would usually consider jail time for violence, but took into consideration Power’s legal ambitions as well as noting the punch was “out of character”. The decision has caused anger throughout the nation and locally with business man Brian Hayes labeling the sentence as “dumbfounding”.
Mr Hayes, whose son was the victim of a coward punch while out on Hastings Street in December last year, said it “beggars belief that the attack on Mr Halbauer was not considered gratuitous violence”. “Ms Callaghan may have a change of heart if she were to sit in a room and discuss her opinion with the families of those killed or injured from these coward’s actions,” Mr Hayes said. A copy of the Premier’s Safe Night Out Strategy is available at www.qld.gov.au/safenightout and will be open for public comment for four weeks, with the final plan subject to review in 12 months.

Open letter to magistrate Bernadette Callaghan As we look back into the history of changing the attitudes of humans, there is always a pivotal moment or event that we can point to that has changed attitudes and eventually laws, in most instances for the betterment of society.
In the case of the ‘Cowards Punch’ people began lobbying politicians to seek changes to the law sometime ago. It took a while and unfortunately more deaths and serious injury for the slow cogs to turn and eventually go through the bureaucratic process but, eventually, laws were changed.
I personally thought that they should have been harsher. Anyone deliberately blindsiding another person and smashing them in the face knowing that one punch can kill should be charged immediately with attempted murder and if the victim dies, it’s murder, plain and simple. Drugs, alcohol, or a dysfunctional childhood is no excuse. Well, all that hard work to curb this disgraceful behaviour got tossed out the window in a recent court hearing when a couple of these ‘heroes’ stood before Magistrate Bernadette Callaghan. Magistrate Callaghan not only let them off with a slap on the wrist with no conviction recorded but

apparently went on to say that the ‘One Punch can Kill’ campaign is a bit of a beat up, fuelled by the press. The fact that she felt compelled for leniency towards them as they were prepared to pay for their victims injuries was just insulting. Perhaps Ms C Callahan would like to sit in a room and explain her opinion and decisions to the families of deceased victims and those unfortunate victims that have survived an attack and have had their lives changed forever. Surely this is one of those pivotal moments - enough is enough.

Koala funding welcomed but more needed ISOBEL COLEMAN While local groups this week welcomed a funding announcement from the Koala Rescue and Rehabilitation Grants program, they say it’s not enough.
Described as a major investment in koala rescue and rehabilitation, the Newman Government announced $202,127 in funding for 11 frontline koala rescue and rehabilitation organisations, including Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue, which will receive $5500 for equipment, including rescue traps.
Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Andrew Powell said that unlike the previous Labor Government, “which just focused on buying up koala habitat, these grants are a major investment to help community organisations extend koala conservation by delivering frontline support in rescuing and rehabilitating koalas.” Noosa koala campaigner Carolyn Beaton said this was “a very welcome initiative. “But while approximately $200,000 is a significant amount, the reality is that it probably represents less than five per cent of the annual operating costs of the 11 recipient or-
ganisations, and there are many others working on the front line. “The Queensland Government will, however, get good bang for their buck because it is second nature for these organisations to make a little go a long way.” A request that rescue vehicle expenses, and particularly fuel, be eligible for funding under the scheme was not approved but the Minister said it was a suggestion that still had merit, “as this is a consistently high operating cost, particularly for the smaller, regional koala rescue groups that travel long distances for their animals to receive specialist care.”
Hit and run offender pleads guilty JOLENE OGLE A Tewantin man has pleaded guilty to six charges, including the dangerous operation of a vehicle and the serious obstruction of police. Peri King appeared in Noosa Magistrate Court on Tuesday to face charges in relation to a hit and run on Gympie Terrace in October last year that left a nine-year-old boy in a critical condition. The incident occurred when King tried to overtake a four-wheel drive
stopped at a pedestrian crossing, while riding a motorbike. The motorbike clipped the side mirror of the vehicle before colliding with the boy and his father. King then fled the scene when the bike wouldn’t start. King has pleaded guilty to six charges, including driving while disqualified by a court order, callous disregard and driving an unregistered vehicle.King will appear at Noosa Magistrate Court on April 15 for sentencing. driving after being caught behind the wheel with a BAC of 0.222 per cent. The 20-year-old woman was caught by police, sitting in the front seat of a van with the keys in the ignition, the engine was turned off. Defence lawyer Anna Smith said the woman accepts the law considers her in charge of the vehicle because the keys were in the ignition; however she was listening to the radio with no intention of driving that night, and actually planned to sleep in the vehicle. The woman was fined $750 and disqualified from driving for six months. No conviction was recorded.
DRIVER DISQUALIFIED A Sunshine Beach man, who crashed his car into a tree on Ben Lexon Drive, has pleaded guilty to driving with a BAC of 0.171 per cent. The apprentice chef was driving his car on March 15 when at approximately 4.20am his vehicle hit a tree, causing the car to come to a stop on a driveway. The man and his passenger fled the scene before the police spotted him nearby almost an hour later. The man was fined $700 and disqualified from driving for eight months. No conviction was recorded.

NOOSA TODAY In the second part of a two-week series, Carolyn Beaton reports on the Noosa Biosphere Reserve management review.
“I was disappointed” CAROLYN BEATON The closed session (not open to members of the public) was an unexpected brainstorming activity for representatives of the sizeable NBL collective made up of community volunteers, 28 Partner organisations, and collaborators.
Council’s Working Party looked on as observers. The group was asked to explore two scenarios: (1) keep the status quo (the NBR management in its current form); and (2) replace the current management with an entirely new model. With a sense that they were being asked to sit between a rock and a hard place, they requested instead to be able to work on a “renovation” scenario aligned with what had already been presented on their behalf. They wanted to explore ways of further enhancing what was considered a successful and adaptable model. This model has given back more than 9500 volunteer hours to the Noosa Biosphere communi-
ty in the past year. It is a well of goodwill, local talent and energy (#NBspirit). At the same time, they wanted to underline the growth and community outreach efforts that have already been advanced (#don’tthrowthebabyoutwiththebathwater). There was a presumption in Session Two that the current organisation was not successful in its branding and messaging. The NBL website is, however, currently tracking at 60,000+ unique visitors a week and there are many other highlights, all reflective of a big body of work completed by a lot of people. I was personally disappointed that the Working Party appeared not to give recognition to the significant projects completed thus far, the growing international standing of NBL or the many other outcomes of the NBR volunteer effort put in by so many Noosa residents. I hope that Council will be able to find a workable compromise amongst the different ideas presented to the Working Party, thereby allowing the NBR enterprise to build on what the community has already achieved and move on to greater success.

Move to restore Mill Point Cooroora Historical Society and Noosa Museum want to develop the once thriving and now desolate 19th century settlement and timber mill site at Mill Point at Lake Cootharaba as a tourist must for locals and visitors.
Part of its restoration work is a subsurface geophysical survey of the cemetery to map the gravesites of 43 adults and children. Spokesman for the project, Bruce Cresswell, told Noosa Today that in terms of conservation the survey “will bring better management of the site which is currently heavily covered in grass up to a metre tall. The gravesite contains some of Noosa’s earliest settlers and is marked by a stone and a plaque.” Mr Cresswell said Mill Point was one of the most successful timber mills in the Cooloola area and is recognised as having State significance by the National Trust and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA). “It has all but disappeared into our history with only a few relics on the surface on a once bustling community of about 500 with houses, shops including a butcher, hotel, school and the saw mill. It has now returned to nature yet it is vital in our life today as it is a place where we can reach into the past, learn of our pioneer forefathers and understand the drives that brought people to the place that to-

day we know as Noosa.” In 2004 community concerns about the future of the site prompted the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, EPA, Noosa Council and Queensland University to collaborate on a detailed survey of the site. Its report described how in 1869 the saw mill opened at Elanda Point to process timber from the hinterland with the ultimate destination the thriving town of Brisbane. It told how 43 burials of nine men, four women and 30 children were recorded between 1873 and 1891. It adds: “From the mid 1880s a series of events took place that would influence the decline and closure of the mill in 1892. The Queensland Government introduced royalties to control wasteful cutting and competition from imported timbers but it reduced the output of local sawmills and kept the price of timber down. Softwood resources at Cootharaba were nearing economic exhaustion, having been exploited for close to 20 years. “Dairy farmers moved into the area early in the 20th century, but was never really successful because of the poor pasture available.” Mr Cresswell said the society had applied for a grant of just under $10,000 from the State Government’s Everyone’s Environment Grants for the subsurface mapping of the cemetery. “If we get the funding, we will invite the community to join in the survey and be part of the scanning and the results.

CASE REVISITED I wish to make the case that Case’s case is no exception. His type of deluded thinking has come to rule Australia. On the political level, we have entered the age of “tape cutting” (red or green, makes no difference). This can only mean unrestrained, roughshod exploitation of all available natural resources, to the end of sustaining, as long as stocks last, an unsustainable lifestyle. The effects on the environment will be devastating. From the perspective of future generations, this amounts to “criminal negligence” (David Suzuki). These are sad times for people who know this direction to be wrong, and who feel in their hearts that Red Indian word to be true: “When all the animals are gone, Man will die from a great loneliness of spirit”. Aren’t we halfway there already? I am from a time, when stepping out into one’s backyard meant entering a wonderland of sounds, sights and smells, that was there by its own right, its abundance not “controlled”, “preserved” or “landscaped” by us. Far from being threatening, this was actually connecting and reassuring us as humans. Our grandchildren are led to believe that IT connections are all they will ever need! Well, good luck to them, but I don’t think they will escape the human condition eventually.
I will soon be moving back to Germany permanently where, to some degree, sanity still prevails in political decision-making, and where thinking along the lines of caring for a sustainable future seems to be the rule, not the exception. My ardent wish for Noosa is to be able to safeguard its exceptional path from the onslaught of majority rules. One thing seems certain, though: to achieve this, more vigilance will be needed, not less, than in the past! I can’t resist adding a sentence from a most unlikely source, The Australian of March 21: “If we don’t lock up all the climate deniers, the cockroaches will inherit the planet”! I couldn’t believe my eyes, but it looks like they really DO mean this! So, let’s never give up hope, that Case’s case might be closed one day for good.

EYE FOR AN EYE As a believer in euthanasia for the terminally ill, I also believe that “life wasn’t meant to be easy.” How can we justify giving a criminal the choice of life or death (the easy way out) when they offered no choice to their victims. An “eye for an eye” means you suffer the same as your victim.
POSITIVE INPUT I don’t understand why Dr Stephen Grandison and his family are turned away from Australia because of his disabled son. We have thousands of women with diseases that take up a great deal of time in our hospitals coming from SE Asia, kidney/liver disease prevalent among them. Added to that the 85 per cent of boat people who are still on Centrelink benefits more than five years after arriving here, makes a mockery of the expectation that Dr Grandison and his family will be a burden on Australia. I fully support his attempts to stay here and continue his productive and positive input into Australia.

DIG DEEP It occurs to me with regard to the fundraising day to be held at the Cooroy Golf Club on Sunday, March 30, that non-golfing residents might like to donate to the cause or purchase tickets in the huge multi-prize wheelbarrow raffle to be held on that day in aid of the Sunshine Coast Hospice. Donations or tickets from Cooroy Golf Club.

WRITING’S ON THE WALL You have to hand it to Case Smit and his fellow science deniers (March 20). They are persistent and consistent in clinging to the unsubstantiated. I have no aspiration to change their minds but it would be a shame if anyone reading this paper for information thought for a moment that Case had a case. He doesn’t. Calling the IPCC “discredited and its annual reports “political” is like saying that the Australian Academy of Science and all other national peak science organizations don’t know what they are talking about. His are the comments of a political ideologue who is without research skills or the ability to consider evidence that conflicts with his opinion. These are also characteristic of religious fundamentalists. Science is probably the single least corrupt activity of human kind. To abandon science or deny its validity is the same as putting your trust in witch doctors or fortune tellers. Although the rate of heating of the Earth’s atmosphere has decreased some since 1998, the Earth’s total heat, including the Arctic, the oceans and the continents, has continued to rise at increasing rates. Every decade has been hotter than the preceding decade for the past 40 years. 1985 was the last time that the global average temperature was less than the 30 year average.
Some say that Australia’s CO2 production is too small to make a difference even if we were to cut our production significantly. They say that China’s increase in CO2 production would swamp our reduction. So what can we do? We could put a 100 per cent tax on export coal. That would be an incentive for China, at least, to push forward their current plans to phase out coal for power production. They are already planning for peak coal importation to occur in 2020. We could also stop the $10B annual subsidies to coal mining and use the tax on export coal to start subsidizing non-carbon energy. The writing is on the wall. Why are we one of only two of the top 66 CO2 producing nations to not have an effective CO2 reduction strategy?

BIOSPHERE STUDY There was an article in our local press about what to do with the training facility in Tewantin. It would be a good idea to get the marine science department of Australia to study our Biosphere. We need some studies done on depleting fish numbers, birdlife and contamination of our sensitive eco system/biosphere.

NOOSA TODAY SCAMS DANGEROUS I was so glad to see your stories on internet crime. I am a woman of a mature age and sadly, I have seen friends fall for love scams on the internet. I sympathise with Pam Morley. It must be very scary to wonder if criminals will access your bank and take all of your life savings in only minutes. I hope that the community learnt from the stories and will be aware of the dangers of being on the internet. It is not only scams that are dangerous, and it is great to see a note to “younger readers” as this is a domain frequented more often by younger people. I hope there are more stories like these to remind everyone of the danger.

IMPORTANT REMINDER I was saddened to read your recent cyber bullying story (March 13). I hope all parents have taken note of the “handballing” of such an important and dangerous issue. Keep an eye on your kids’ (or grandchildren’s) computer use and have a good talk with them about the dangers of the internet on a regular basis. Kids all think that nothing like this would happen to them, yet too many children are being bullied and emotionally scarred through unrestricted usage of the internet. Well done on a great story and such an important reminder to us all.

AGREE WITH IDEA Referring to Greg Reddaway’s piece, A Noosa wildlife sanctuary, (NT, March 20), I think Greg has made some good points. The idea of a rehabilitation centre in the hinterland is one we can all aspire to. Indeed Noosa & District Landcare Group [NDLG] has been in discussions with Qld Koala Crusaders and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy [AWC] recently about the possibility of just such a venture. I agree we could include other threatened species, including the Lungfish, and others. However, I would like to correct a commonly held belief that Noosa Landcare is ‘part-government funded’ - we wish! NDLG, and other groups that do terrific work, such as Noosa Integrated Catchment Association [NICA] and the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee [MRCCC], receive a modest sum as part of the previous council’s Community Partnerships program. We use the money to support activities which leverage funds for on-ground works and community engagement and help 28 people maintain meaningful employment. All other revenue is generated through a tender process or grant application in the open market place.
PHILLIP MORAN Noosa & District Landcare
HAD A GUTFUL I am personally offended by Jeff Nuske’s attempts to constantly try and throw a spanner into the works of our newly elected local council and deliver nothing but unproductive and negative comments in the media, misquoting and quoting facts that are taken out of context and, if needed, even inventing stuff as long
as it’s negative. I, and I think the 83 per cent of the residents who voted FOR de-amalgamation are personally offended by his grandstanding and constant criticism of what our community and community leaders have decided for our future. This is coming from a man who has done absolutely nothing for this community and contributed absolutely nothing positive to this community whatsoever in the past! If Nuske has something to say that could vaguely be labelled as ‘productive’ let’s hear it, but we really have had a gutful of his poisonous sideline-comments in the past in the various media. If everything is so bad here, Jeff can always tour the country and join his preferred former mayoral candidate Patricia Peterson who, last I heard, is singing in a band now to make a living.

SURF FEST THANKS On behalf of the organisers of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing 2014, presented by Jeep, I would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the broad Noosa and Sunshine Coast community for your unprecedented support of what many people are claiming as the best surf festival yet. We had the waves, the weather, and most importantly, a wonderful community spirit throughout the eight days of the event. We know that it must come as a shock to regular beachgoers to see a major construction rise up on the sand, and suddenly thousands more people than usual thronging the beach and adjacent walkways, and we appreciate your good-natured tolerance for this one week of the year. Likewise, we
want to thank the Hastings Street accommodation, hospitality and trading community for your embracing of our festival, and we hope it was successful for you. For those of you who got behind us with sponsorship, an even greater thanks. Finally, we want to thank the Council lifeguards and the Noosa Heads SLSC beach patrols for their willingness to work with us in ensuring safe surfing for all, and a big shout to all recreational surfers, swimmers and body wompers who shared the waves of First Point and Main Beach so generously with thousands of visitors who will never forget this week of perfect surf.
PHIL JARRATT Festival Director
LET’S DO IT I am writing to a reference article by a Greg Reddaway on page 12 of last week’s paper. I do not know how long Greg has been in Noosa area, but back in 2000 the Cooroy Task Force was set by the council of the day to help our area progress after the closure of our mills in Cooroy, losing 120-plus jobs. The task force put up an idea of the Brisbane Forest park type of operation and going a little bit more such as camping sites, mobile lightweight construction type buildings/cabins, that could be moved around to help with a light footprint on the site. We also included a wildlife sanctuary to include all native animals and a fish hatchery, which is already built. At the same time council identified an area suitable for koala populations to be brought from coastal areas and roam free with no predators. With
face-to-face meetings with the green movement and a perceived support we thought this is going to happen. Wrong. When the group went back to Brisbane a few weeks later, the idea was not supported. The reason given was that the local green groups, local member, and a certain koala group said no. I strongly support your ideas in your article, this fits very nicely to one of our Biosphere action projects. Just imagine an area where people could come on a day visit [limited numbers only] and bookings must be made. This works very successfully in other areas ie Lawn Hill area. Let’s do it.
RAY KELLY Cooroy
NOT ALL ROSY Many people express the opinion that Noosa is a true paradise, that everything is rosy since de-amalgamation and that this is the best place in the world to live. However, if you scratch the surface, there are the same problems here as anywhere else with youth unemployment, homelessness, people with alcohol and drug addiction, domestic violence, break and enters, and people on pensions struggling to make it through the fortnight. Anyone who believes this isn’t happening is really living in a fool’s paradise.

GET ON YA (ELECTRIC) BIKE! If you thought bikes were just for kids and the hard-core, Lycra-clad fitness fanatics – think again.
Thanks to the emergence of the e-bike the humble tredley is experiencing a new lease of life, with Sunshine Coast residents joining a global trend to embrace motor-assisted pedal power. Daniel Whiting, owner of the Electric Bike Centre at Mooloolaba said electric bikes were set to be a big part of the future. “You just have to look at what is happening in Europe, where about one in four bikes sold is now electric,” Mr Whiting said. “It’s a huge figure and will no doubt be reflected in the Australian market in coming years.” Mr Whiting said the Coast’s climate and stunning scenery was a perfect fit for the electric bike, which allows more people to get mobile and make the most of our lifestyle. “People of all age groups are buying e-bikes for health and fitness, to increase their mobility, for independence and just for fun,” he said.

Preparing children for the future Children are not a little hand at the end of a brain which helps produce improved NAPLAN data. They are human beings with bodies and souls who need to understand how we can live together in this world, solve problems and bring about productive change.
That’s according to CQUni-
versity Noosa lecturer Dr Sue Davis, also known locally for her Noosa Biosphere leadership, who last Friday delivered the keynote address at the Drama Queensland conference, held in Brisbane. Susan feels it is very timely to revisit excellent teaching practices, drawing on the best practice and research from past and present. “A primary focus on liter-
acy and numeracy only won’t do it. We need an education system that provides children and young people with a rich and rigorous education while engaging them in learning that will prepare them for exciting, tumultuous and uncertain futures,” she said. “If we truly want children to be innovative, engaged global citizens, they need to have a diverse and meaningful education.”

Speed networking for success The Noosa App team will be running a facilitated networking event, hosted by CCIQ Noosa on Tuesday, April 8, 5.30pm for 6pm, at Noosa Convention & Exhibition Centre.
This idea of Connecting Businesses has grown from The Noosa App philosophy of Connecting Communities. The concept behind the facilitated networking event is that it guarantees you will meet and speak to 20 to 30 like-minded business owners over
the course of the evening. “We have all been to networking events before where people arrive and immediately head for a group of people that they already know. Very few people come away having met anyone new, who might benefit them and their business,” said CCIQ Noosa President Sarah Fisher said. “During this facilitated event, each person in a round table group of six to eight will have 60 seconds to deliver their best elevator pitch to all the other members of that group.
With property values on the rise and interest rates sitting at historical lows, now is a great time for potential property investors to start formulating their investment plan. Indeed, the property market is currently in the best position it has been for over a decade, but it will not stay like this forever. Potential investors may only have a small window of opportunity to maximize on the current market conditions and create a profitable property portfolio. Here at Mortgage Choice we can assist you with your property investment strategy and the structure of your investment loans. We can guide you through the property investment maze, explain how much money you may need to cover your costs and deposit and even help you identify your borrowing capacity. Further, we can help you decide whether your investments will be cash-flow positive or negatively geared.

Students chop for charity JOLENE OGLE Twenty students and teachers from Good Shepherd Lutheran College proved their braveness on Monday, when they shaved their heads in front of the school assembly, all in the name of charity.
The school’s sport houses competed to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave, with representatives from each house, along with teaching staff, put-
ting their hands up to shave off their locks. School captain James Richardson lead by example, and was joined by Grace Dixon, who shaved her head in honour of her mum, Lorraine, who is currently battling cancer, and Keita Middelberg-Steel, who cut off her long locks to deafening applause, helping to raise over $5,000. The fundraising will continue this Friday at the school’s cross country event, where students can pay $2 to have their hair coloured.

Something to smile about The cost of orthodontic treatment can sometimes deter parents but the cost isn’t always as high as everyone assumes.
Lesley Short of Sunshine Coast Orthodontics said not all children
need a full set of braces or headgear. “A good orthodontist will use the minimal amount of equipment and fit partial braces, if that’s all that’s required. Make sure you discuss options with your orthodontist and get a second opinion,” she said.
“Often, there is no charge for a quick check, if it’s not the right time to start treatment. Our philosophy is to minimise cost to parents whilst getting the best result for your child.” Make an appointment on 5447 5040.

“Initially there was some degree of caution, especially about having other teachers regularly come into one’s classroom to observe and reflect on teaching skills. It is early days, said Mr Shirley. “But this is being replaced by a sense that by opening up classrooms to observations, Peregian Beach College is surfing an exciting wave with the teachers acknowledged as having excellent skills. We are surfing with the best on the world circuit of teaching skills.”

Studies have shown that a teacher with excellent teaching skills can enhance the learning of students in his or her class and enable them to achieve in half a year what a student could achieve in a full year when taught by a teacher with poor teaching skills. Chris Shirley, CEO/Head of College, said PBC was examining what it currently does well, as well as evaluating what high performing school systems such as Singapore and Shanghai have done to enhance their teachers’ skills. A five-year plan has been devised, covering core elements such as teacher mentoring and coaching, classroom observation and reflection, and teacher appraisal and feedback.

With husband Colin, Gill privately funded the installation of infrastructure of both large and small animal plus the considerable cost of specialised food. Gill still works up to 18 hours a day with her roster of volunteer carers. Gill’s reward is the 60 or so per cent of “patients” which are rehabilitated for successful return to the wild. Make Noosa a National Surfing Reserve PHIL JARRATT
Now that the tumult and the shouting has died down a little, we turn our attention to other surfing-related matters. You might recall that I announced on this page a month or so ago that a group of interested parties was hoping to achieve National Surfing Reserve status for Noosa by the end of 2014, with a push for World Surfing Reserve the following year.
Since that article appeared our steering committee has met a couple of times, we have received the endorsement of Noosa MP and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs, Glen Elmes, and we have launched a public awareness campaign and community consultation process. Courtesy of Noosa Biosphere, we were able to present a small exhibit at the Biosphere water refill station in the beach village at the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, and Noosa Malibu Club volunteers

consistency of waves, reputation in the global surfing community, history of wave riding and unique environmental values. NSRs do not exclude any user group, and are designed to enshrine a country’s “sacred” surf places. With significant support from all stakeholders and members of our community, we appear to be on track to complete our bid this year, but we do need the support of beach lovers and surfers. The easiest way to express that support is to jump on Facebook and give us a like. FAIR COP Usually every year before the surf festival I pay a visit to Sen Sgt Steve McReight and run through the event program, bar hours, anticipated crowds and so on, so that he can make necessary arrangements. This year I was beaten to the punch when Sen Const Pierre Senekal, the officer in charge of Noosa Beat in Hastings Street phoned me to arrange a meeting. Relatively new in town, Pierre wanted to get a handle on how the event was run, what security we had in
place and our duty of care. I have to admit I was a little taken aback by his proactive initiative. This was community policing as it should be, the man in blue doing his homework with a view to preventing problems, rather than solving them by sticking people in the slammer. I was further taken aback when Pierre started picking my brains about how he might go about raising money for a beach wheelchair for Main Beach. I made a few suggestions which he duly noted, and then, I have to admit, I forgot about it as the festival descended upon us. Then, when I finally got to last week’s Noosa Today, my colleague Ron Lane had written the story of Pierre’s fundraiser, resulting in the delivery of a new beach chair within a matter of weeks, not months. Good on you, Pierre. This bloke is a real doer, and he will be a great asset to our community. And I might add that he and his team policed the surf festival quietly, efficiently and in good spirit. SHORT SHOTS Elsewhere in the same issue of NT, I learned that old mate Tony Purdon had suffered a heart attack while surfing Granite a couple of weeks back. He lived to tell the tale, thanks to smart work from surfer mates, lifeguards and ambulance men. Jeez, Tony, we don’t want anyone leaving the building just yet! Get well soon and get back in the waves. Is it just me, or is anyone else appalled that Campbell Newman thinks a king hit that kills some one is worth 50 years non-parole, but the premeditated rape and murder of a small child is worth only 20? If he plays his cards right, the scumbag that killed Daniel Morcombe will be about my age when he gets out. That’s just not enough time.

Libby Winter and Di Cuddihy collected several hundred signatures of support for the initiative. In addition to this, we have attracted nearly 600 likes on the Make Noosa a National Surfing Reserve Facebook page, set up for us at a moment’s notice by the Mal Club’s webmaster, Kenny Williams. If you support the idea that Noosa’s point breaks should join Snapper, Kirra, Currumbin Alley and Burleigh as part of a National Surfing Reserve, please visit us on Facebook and like us! So far in the process of community consultation, we have yet to find anyone who is opposed to the idea, but to ensure that no group of beach users is in any doubt about what is involved, we will be holding a public meeting in the coming weeks. In case you missed the previous article, in summary, National Surfing Reserves is a not for profit body that bestows reserve status on significant surfing locations based on quality and

The answer is clear with Accolade Do you have an outdoor area that is continually being battered by wind and rain? Most home owners are restricted to how much usage they can get out of their outdoor area, whether it is a patio, decking, pergola or outdoor alfresco area.
But Accolade® Weather Screens have been offering customers weather-proofing solutions for their outdoor areas for over 10 years through their innovate alternative to PVC café blinds. An Accolade® Weather Screen system is a series of aluminium frames inserted with a clear weather resistant PVC material, which has the optical clarity of glass and the added benefits of being lightweight and safe. Unlike your traditional PVC café blinds, there is no need to roll a blind up and down, which causes creasing and warping in the PVC. By using a series of weather resistant screens, enclosing your outdoor area from wind and rain has never been easier. Accolade® has designed the system with the harsh Australian climate in mind. The unique tracking and locking system ensures there is no flapping around in high winds. The system has revolutionised outdoor living, allowing customers to enjoy

you like it or not, it happens around you. You can fear it, and it can paralyse your brain and your hands…or you can embrace it and enjoy its vibrations, moving towards something that is not you, yet! Change, you learn it and if you do it, this enormous world starts shrinking around you. You will discover a new you, and another, and another. Change, how do you do it? I don’t know. You should know. All I know is that one day, I started cooking for others and I did it in the same way I do it for my son. I didn’t change anything. Same food, same passion, same time. Those others I was cooking for, they felt it. They felt I didn’t change anything, and change happened in their lives, and in my life.

Colour goes organic After relocating from Brisbane – where they had a salon for 10 years - mother and daughter team, Lisa and Emma, were keen to open up here in Noosa.
So they were thrilled when they came across premises overlooking Noosa River, at River Terrace Hair Studio. They have been in the salon for just over 18 months. Loving the whole concept of hair, makeup and photography, the girls’ clientele is growing nd they even have around 30 clients who make the trip up the Coast every six weeks from Brisbane, and from as far afield as the Gold Coast. Following numerous requests, Lisa and Emma have recently introduced an organic colour range which, they say, has drastically

If you’d like to find out more, don’t miss the salon’s organic colour launch party on Wednesday, April 2, 4pm to 6pm. As well as information about the range, there will be bubbly and nibbles, card readings with Annie Pestars, crystal jewellery by Artisan Jewels, sample bags and more. Tickets are $15 – redeemable on product purchased on the night. For further information, phone 5440 5626.

Barking mad? There’s a solution Barking is one of the most common problems owners have with their dogs. But is it really your dog’s fault?
“We are quickly annoyed if our dogs are barking constantly or at everything in sight. We get angry at them, we yell at them but what we don’t do is try to find out why they are barking,” said Katrina Boyd of Kats 4 Dogs. “Dogs bark for many reasons and it’s natural to a certain degree but if your dog is barking continually it needs to be addressed properly. There are many quick fix solutions to barking such as barking collars but these collars are a lazy way of correcting the problem. In most problem barking cases I’ve worked with, the dogs that had barking collars on started displaying other stress-based behavioural problems. You see, the cause of the barking is still there but your dog knows that if it does bark, it receives a shock or spray in the face.
FIND OUT WHAT YOUR DOG IS DOING
If you are unsure whether your dog is barking, or if you just want to know for how long, there is an App you can download called Bark’n Mad. If you cannot leave your iPad at home to record, you can download ‘Audacity’ to your PC, which will do the same thing. “If your dog is barking all day when you leave the house then quite possibly he is suffering with separation anxiety. If you use a barking collar, your dog’s anxiety will get worse. “If we yell at our dogs for barking, your dog actually believes you’re joining in and you are in fact rewarding that behaviour.
You can nail it! If you thought trimming your dog’s nails was purely cosmetic, think again!
Genevieve at Sunshine Coast Pet Grooming said it’s really important owners get their dogs’ nails trimmed regularly. “If not it can end up being extremely painful for the dog. I have seen nails that have grown around on themselves and into the pad creating sores and infection,” she said. “I have been clipping a Daschund’s nails that had been left unattended for quite some time and they became
overgrown and caused the dog’s feet to spread. After regular appointments on a three-weekly basis for the past four months, there is a remarkable improvement in the dog’s posture and the owners have reported that the dog is much happier in himself and now enjoys his walks.” It’s not expensive, either, with the service starting from just $10. The RSPCA also urges owners to do the right thing, saying it’s an important part of a regular grooming routine. If your dog’s nails get too long, they can break, which is pain-
Using a spray bottle filled with water and/ or vinegar is no way to correct bad behaviour. What you will do it create possible fear and certainly disrespect.” Kat said the first thing to do is ensure your dog has good quality leadership in place at home, that there are rules and boundaries in place and your dog is exercised on a daily basis. “It’s important to create a good stable environment for your dog. Remember, leadership is not about dominating your dog, the last thing you want to do is intimidate or scare your dog. You need to build a trusting and respectful relationship. If your dog doesn’t trust you it cannot respect you. “Once your dog understands what you want, you can teach your dog limitations to its barking. You may allow your dog to bark a few times before you let her know that’s enough. It’s natural for dogs to alert you that someone is on or around your territory but it’s important that they understand to stop once done.”
ful and sometimes results in infection. Long nails can also cause an irregular gait that leads to skeletal damage. Despite its importance, many people can’t or don’t like to trim their dog’s nails. It’s a task that can make both people and dogs anxious. How do you know exactly where to cut the nail? What if you trim the nail too close and cut the sensitive quick? What if your dog seems worried? Although it can seem daunting, if you keep a few guidelines in mind and maintain a consistent schedule, nail trimming doesn’t have to become a stressful chore.

Around the greens TEWANTIN BOWLS CLUB Well done to our bar manager, Peter Lonsdale for organising the successful World›s Greatest Shave event last weekend for the Leukaemia Foundation. With staff and club members participating, a grand total of $883 was raised.  Peter, his wife Judith, John Pulham, Heath Costello and Mick Rivers braved the clippers for a close cut, while Marlene Trembath and Evelyn Coghlan looked glamorous in their new hair colours. Thanks to all who participated.  Drysdale Funerals and JC Bain & Sons sponsored 69-ers event was well patronized with Gary Hughes and Daryl Birt the winners. The
scheduled game between Victoria Point and our Gold super challenge team was won on a walkover by our team. The Silver men’s team have made the play-offs by finishing second in its division. The ladies’ club championship pairs have now reached the semi finals with teams Ross, Taylor, McAnelly and Mould playing off.Â

it is bowls as usual for these dedicated players. We will hopefully know sooner than later if we will continue as a Club. In the meantime we are sailing on a high note with Cooroy Ladies coming second in the Hinterland Challenge competition and the last game of the season being played next week. The return match against leaders Mapleton will be very exciting as Cooroy were the victors when the two teams met at Cooroy a month ago. The Galahs had a loss on Thursday night in the High Rollers leaving three teams as leaders and two teams in second place. 101s continue to climb the ladder with yet another win last week.

lenge for our Silver ladies and, although not making the finals play-offs this year, it was a satisfactory way to end the season with a strong win over the Tewantin club. The four took their match 24 shots to 21, while the triples scored 31-17. A bunch of Noosa bowlers zipped over to Wellington, New Zealand last week to take part in a two-day carnival and Ian Sanday reports that his four finished fifth in the strong international line-up. It’s hard to get much information from the other players, but it seems like they all had a very good time. In club championship news, play in the ladies pairs continues, the men’s C-singles final was postponed to Saturday next, and entries are now open for ladies A-singles and men’s B grade.

NOOSA TODAY NRL WEEKLY REVIEW PETER MCGREGOR
The results and timing of the wins will please the NRL as the interest and end result of the games was not known until the final whistle. I feel for the Parramatta Eels and agree with Jarrod Hayne that the Eels were somewhat robbed in their last minute loss to Manly. I also agree with Hayne that Manly had the rub of the green and the decisions made by the referee were influenced to some degree. It can be assumed that your standing in the competition, where you play and who you have as players and coach may in some way influence some referee’s decisions. Of the Queensland sides’ performances over the weekend I thought the Titans’ bounce back from a humiliating defeat last weekend to a never-say-die victory over the Raiders in Canberra was exceptional. Well done to coach John Cartwright and his

More surprises last weekend and who would have bet on the Dragons to be not only unbeaten after three rounds but also leading the competition? Last weekend’s games were all close and down to the wire and some fans will be feeling robbed with their team losing in the very last minute of the match.
Noosa Pirates had a tough day at the office this week. With the temperatures rising and a massive injury toll, the Pirates struggled against a well-armed Caloundra Sharks. Full report on page 39.
sure that all tipsters will be looking into their crystal ball for help in selecting winners. I’ll give it another crack and here we go. On Friday night the Roosters take on the Sea Eagles in what is the match of the round. This will be a very hard fought, up tempo and entertaining game. I like both sides in this one but the way the Roosters held their nerve against the Broncos and fought hard for the win, so I just can’t go past them. Roosters by 4. The other Friday night game will be the undefeated Dragons against the much improved Broncos. I like the Broncos in this one and the first team to inflict a Dragons loss. Broncos by 8. On Saturday the unpredictable Bulldogs tackle the Storm at home and I get nervous about the
team. The Broncos were very unlucky in their last minute loss to the Roosters in what was the match of the round. I am impressed with the way the Broncos are playing and hope they continue in the vein of form. Conversely, the Cowboys have been very disappointing. The loss to the Warriors last Saturday in Townsville will be very concerning to the club and their fans. The players seemed disinterested for the first 60 minutes and when they are down significantly decide to play up tempo and entertaining footy. The Cowboys left it too late and the Warriors won, which in itself released the pressure valve somewhat on coach Matt Elliott. We have another round of interesting rugby league this weekend and I am

Doggies. The Storm are nearing a loss but you just don’t know what you are going to get from the Doggies. Hard one but the Storm by 6. The other Saturday game is between the Eels and Panthers. The Eels showed true grit last Sunday and were very unlucky in their loss to Manly. The Panthers are going along okay and have belief. Good game this one but I will lead towards the Panthers by 6. On Sunday the rejuvenated Tigers travel across the ditch to take on the Warriors. Are the Warriors back? I just don’t know and feel uneasy picking them, but I will. Warriors by 10. In Sydney the Rabbitohs play the Raiders in what should be a very open game with some hard hitting defence in the middle. The Rabbitohs are in a bit of a hole at the moment and need the win to gain the confidence of their fans. Souths by 12. The Knights and Sharks do battle in Newcastle and the only way I am going to pick the winner is to throw a dart. I have and I am sweating beads. Newcastle by 2. The final game will be on Monday with the Titans hosting the Cowboys. I have no clue on this one and the crystal ball is foggy. Both sides need to win. If the Cowboys can wake from their slumber then I will go with them. Cowboys by 10. There you go. I should put in a disclaimer as my tips have not been that great. Good tipping this weekend. ‘Remember, Rugby League football, the greatest game of all.’

Eumundi Dragons ready to roar The smell of liniment is in the air again and the temperature will soon start to drop. That all means the footy season is about to start and a lot of our young locals are getting excited.
Eumundi Dragons are set to kick off the 2014 Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union season with a roar. Training has been in full swing for weeks and everyone has got a taste for Saturday morning rugby again. Last Thursday club members were presented with their 2014 team shirts by Daniel Nethery from Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union. Daniel shared some words with the youngsters about always enjoying their rugby and having pride in their team colours.
Eumundi Dragons are fortunate this year to again have the Cooroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank as their major sponsor. Manager, Geoff Edwards was on hand to show his support for the 2014 junior teams. The bank remains committed to supporting locals sporting clubs, schools and organisations and their support for the Eumundi Dragons is testament to that. The Dragons are still signing on members. Interested players and their families are welcome to come down to the ground this Saturday from 8am to witness the junior rugby union teams in action first-hand. Just head to the Eumundi Showgrounds on Black Stump Road, Eumundi, see www.eumundidragons.rugbynet.com.au or phone 0448 191 218.

EAGLES TAKE FLIGHT FOR 2014 PETA HOLMES Noosa Eagles Soccer Club kicked off its season last weekend. U7 Gold played a great game against Palmwoods Zulus.
Although they scored 4-goalsto-0, team spirit was high. Player of the Match went to a well deserved Bonnie Boyes, Bella ‘The Boot’ Hillegers had a cracking game slipping into a defence role and Most Improved went to Harrison Howard. U12 Noosa Gold had their first win of the season defeating Palmwoods Celtics 5-0. Noosa dominated from the kick off, working well together to achieve a great result. Luke Poulton scored 3 goals and was named Player of the Match. Jack Pearce and Jordy Gartrell also scored. U9 Noosa Gold played Palmwoods Knights at Jubilee Park. At half-time it was 1-0 to Noosa but then Palmwoods scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of play and unfortunately Noosa lost 2-1.
Lions launch into new season ROB BLACK Noosa Lions Football Club officially kick-off their season this Saturday with more than 500 registered players in 38 teams, taking to the football fields of the Sunshine Coast each weekend representing the born-again Noosa region.
With major sponsors Madill’s Motor Group driving the Premier men’s division, and Tewantin RSL & Citizens Memorial Club and RACV Resort kicking in for the juniors, it’s looking like a huge season for Noosa Lions FC. With a growing junior base and now six all-female teams - double
that of last season - plus senior men and two Over-35s, the Lions are roaring along. The Premier men went undefeated in the pre-season and demolished Beerwah BeeGees 4-0 in the first round of the Premiership last weekend under the guidance of experienced skipper Ben Cahn. The Lions are into the final of the Johnny Warren Cup and played Caloundra on Tuesday to earn the right to play the Sunshine Coast Fire in a shot at representing the Sunshine Coast in the Football Queensland Cup. The Premier men’s division are a mix of old heads - Michael Williams has played for 20 years in the top flight - and young talent, with the
likes of former Fire U18 Chris Jancevski. Other Noosa juniors coming through in to the senior ranks this year include Murray Togatio and Lachlan Taylor in the men’s and Georgia Hausler, Poppy Dunn and Ellie Jones in the women. Lions president Brian Stockwell said things were looking good for the future at the Girraween Sporting Complex. “We have state-of-the-art facilities, great sponsors, a hardy group of hard-working volunteers and committee plus one of the strongest player-bases on the Coast,” he said. “The Lions draw from Gympie in the north right down to Peregian and points south with major

sponsors Madill’s Motor Group having strong ties with the Gympie region. “ Like Madill’s the club has a Gympie connection with two of the Premier men’s side, prolific goal-scorer Tim Hollingworth and Dale Tucker from Gympie, plus Adam Madill is a senior Noosa player and three other senior men work at Madill’s.” This Saturday Noosa takes on Woombye, with Reserves at 4pm, followed by Premier men’s at 6pm, plus on-field activities for junior players in the breaks. Tigers ready to roll in 2014 TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS
Yes, it’s that time of the year once again as Aussie Rules footy teams from across the nation finish their preseasons and match practice to converge on a very anticipated round one.
And at Noosa Tigers, plenty of personnel changes bring much optimism for the season ahead. A new competition with a more lo-
cal feel, a new senior coach and a vibrant recruiting push places the Noosa boys in a far better predicament than last year. Starting with an opening away game against Nambour on Saturday at their Palmwoods arena, the Tigers find themselves in a much more logistically suited competition in 2014, whereby game, against Gold Coast teams and southern Brisbane clubs have been replaced by Sunshine Coast teams like Caloundra, Caboolture, Maroochydore, this week’s opponent Nambour and North Brisbane outfits such as Mayne, Kedron and Aspley. The more locally-based con-
cept is already creating heaps of interest among the Tiger faithful, both on and off the field. Noosa’s new senior coach is James Gellie, who hails from the strong Hampden league in Western Victoria and brings with him a terrific footy brain and some valuable modern day coaching experience. Whether Jimmy plays or not, we will just have to wait and see as he comes to the Tigers as a very accomplished footballer, also. Speaking of accomplished footballers, the Tigers list has changed significantly. Back to the fray are dual premiership players Brett and Troy Duke, as
well as Tommy McKittrick, who has formally been named a senior assistant. Add to those Sam Dwyer (Port Fairy), Zac McDonald, Jed Mullen, Tim Neilson and Peter Roberts (Western Border), Tom Keehan, Dillion Dempsey and Josh Reichman (Darwin) and there’s plenty to suggest that the Noosa boys will be on the move and around the mark in 2014. Don’t miss round one this Saturday at the very picturesque Palmwoods oval. It’s a short drive, the Tigers won’t disappoint and isn’t it great that local footy is back. Go Tigers!
Game on and all points count RICHARD MURRIHY Junior footy kicked off in earnest last weekend. There are no grading rounds, as in the past, it was round one, game on, all points count.
This year we introduced a new U11 age group. They kicked off the weekend on Friday night but, alas, had a loss to Maroochydore in a good first-up effort.
Noosa Gold 12s kicked the dew off the back oval early Sunday and lost in a close game. Goal kickers: T Buntain, O Stewart, B Crawford. Best players: T Sparks, B Crawford, O Stewart, T McNeil, T Buntain, S Brain. On the front oval 14 Gold gelled together pretty well to pull off a win. nedy, W O’Dwyer, F O’Toole, J Perry, J Boughton, D Deans. Thanks to the boys who doubled up in this and the 14 Blues game. 14 Blues had a solid hit out against Coolum to take the points, again a good effort for their first game. Goal kickers: T Ansell 4, L Whitworth 2, R Modini, J Turner, W McKenzie, C Birmingham, F O’Toole, J Brain, L Haines, M Pettigrove. Best players: J Brain, M Pettigrove, R Modini, J Shaw,

L Whitworth, T Ansell. 12 Blues were away at Kawana and had a loss. Steve will be able to analyse the game and go forward from here. This left the U15 girls and they had a win in a very good team effort. Goal kickers: R Mills 10, S Robinson 8, B Caple 4, H Strelow 2, C Lewis-Boyer. Many are called, few are chosen BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE
With the state titles over and the national titles just days away the names of competitors are being bandied around and clubmates and supporters are having their say regarding potential medal winners.
But for some of us it is time to stop and spare a thought and say thanks to those behind the scenes, the hard workers who make it happen. A great example is that group of old boys known as The Dirty Dozen. They assemble every year and handle all the jobs that are vital to a successful major carnival, from Noosa south to the border. Some, after 20 to 30 years on the beaches doing their patrols and running carnivals, now have
Mehdi and Zaki Swaleh
trouble walking on soft sand or up the stairs into the host club for a wellearned beer. Their mates joke about it and tell them to hurry up. But to them it’s all in a day’s work. On behalf of all involved in carnival activities, many thanks. Among the many other workers
were Noosa’s Swaleh brothers – Mehdi, 23, and Zaki, 18. During the recent State Titles at Kirra the boys put their names on the duty roster to work as an IRB team. These teams are vital. If there is no IRB, there is no carnival. They can spend all day in the boats doing water safety, checking the posi-
tions of the buoys that have been laid for events, and also doing pickups of competitors who may require assistance. With radios strapped to their chest they are on call from sun up to sun down. Demanding, responsible, wet through and in big surf, this job is like the priesthood - many feel the calling but very few are chosen. At the end of a grueling three days of patrolling, the Swaleh brothers walked off the sands of Kirra with a wellearned reputation, a team to be relied on. At last year’s Noosa Annual Awards Night, Mehdi was named Rookie of the Year and Zaki, Junior Rookie of the Year. When not at carnivals they serve the Noosa community as very proud members of Patrol
1 on Noosa Main Beach. In every sense of the word they are lifesavers. Noosa Nippers just held their endof-season presentation night and Junior Activities Chairman Dave Glassock presented some interesting facts. They registered 480 members, conducted 25 Nipper Sundays and performed 1200 hours of volunteer work. The highlight of the season was being told Noosa had the best Nipper training program in Queensland, acknowledged as the “benchmark for all clubs in Queensland.” On Friday night the Peregian Club will hold its National Boardies Day celebration at the clubhouse. Admission is free and music will be provided by The Walton.
At last year’s Noosa Annual Awards Night, Mehdi was named Rookie of the Year and Zaki, Junior Rookie of the Year.
Noosa brings home the bacon TONY FROST Noosa was amongst the clubs competing in the recent Hervey Bay Humpbacks Masters Swim Club annual meet. Still in shock
from losing the point score last year for the first time in the Club’s history, their swimmers were primed for all challenges. The day started at 7.30am in the sparkling waters off Torquay Beach,
for a 1km ocean swim, with Noosa dominating, winning almost all age categories. Following the individual events Hervey Bay and Noosa were neck and neck in the point score. But the strength and depth of Noosa’s relay teams brought home the bacon for
Noosa for the second successive year. Congratulations to Noosa Masters team, with 25 swimmers aged from 31 to 71 years, namely Gillian Benstead, Dyanna Benny, Jan Croft, Julia Dunstall, Bardie Gruber, Wendy Ivanusec, Stephanie Jones, Mary
Lester, Helen Malar, Viv Merrill, Jane Powell, Grindle Rudder, Robyn Selby, Jackie Shields, Adele Tucker, Wendy Twidale, Brian Hoepper, Rob Jolly, Studley Martin,Ian Mitchell, Bob Morse, Mark Powell, Ian Tucker & Adrian Wilson.
GRAND FINALS FOR SOFTBALL
TOP PLAYERS ON THE WAY
RICHARD MURRIHY
BELINDA ANSTOCK
So the whole year comes down to this weekend when we play the softball grand finals. Saturday saw the 15s put in a good all-round team effort with the likes of Sinead, Baden and Aden producing great batting displays.
Members of Noosa Croquet Club are gearing up to host the SCRCC Regional Tournament from March 29 to April 5, when all three croquet codes - Association, Ricochet and Golf - will be competed at the club’s Noosa Waters grounds.
This play carried through to the 17s and the contest was the tightest it’s been for a while. Kyle took a good catch on the run from short stop whilst Jack popped up with an outfield catch. Sinead stopped a hard ground ball and got an out at 1st.
At least 11 clubs are competing, from as far north as Maryborough and south to Tweed Heads, and some of the top players in the state are coming to Noosa to take part. At least 45 players and 10 officials will be involved, with around 85+ event entries. Competition will be stiff and visitors are welcome to come along to watch. The next come-and-try day is on Sunday, April 6, from 10am.

U6 Reds 35 draw Eumundi Dragons 35: The Reds’ second match of the season was played in great spirit with Jax Davies and Conor Thomas both pulling on the Eumundi jersey to help out an undermanned team. Charlie Harmer and Manu Lewis both shone running in some ripper tries, Jaxon P and Noah G were immense on defence and Harry Robson dazzled the opposition with his fast footwork. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Jax Davies. U9 Noosa Reds 55 def Matthew Flinders 5: An outstanding display saw the Reds run in 11 tries in a slick demonstration of classy rugby. Setting the platform for the dominant win were Jack, Tom, Joel, Reggie, Leif, Josh, Kian, Riley and Flynn with some sterling defence. Tremendous running from Fletcher, Mack and Harry off the back of that defence paved the way to a win. Try scorers were Leif 4, Josh and Fletcher 2 and one each to Harry, Tom, and Jack. That said, the club couldn’t be prouder of the effort all three age groups put in this week. Already on the back foot due to injury and player unavailability, the Pirates were looking for the boys to back up from U18s and Reggies. The U18s were leading 16-12 when play was called off due to a sickening head clash that saw Jake Thompson and James Harrison sent to hospital with concussion. This incident soured a great performance from the boys with a few old names making a comeback. Casey Sandford had a great game at centre, not missing a tackle and bagging him a try off a great bomb. Noosa Pirates had a tough day at the office last weekend, struggling against a well-armed Caloundra Sharks.
field in ridiculous temperatures. Down on numbers three U18 players backed up on the bench. Jackson Condon, Sam Friend and Big Will were outstanding, playing their second game of the day. Noosa were on fire for the first 20 minutes, leading 12-6, but with more injuries and players suffering from heat exhaustion Caloundra over took them for a 38-18 win. Don’t let the score line fool you. This was one of the bravest efforts by a Noosa side. With only 12 players left on the field for the last 15 minutes the boys could have given up and let the flood gates open but they didn’t! They fought hard and made their coach Gus a very proud man! Unfortunately the day was more like a broken record with more of the same fate to continue. A Grade started the day down on troops with a high injury toll and players due to back up from 18s taken to hospital. Caloundra are a vastly improved side having been strengthened by the signing of former Sunshine Coast Sea Eagle players and a number of the Q Cup Falcons squad in their ranks for 2014. Caloundra made the most of their opportunities to take out a strong win.
