â– Damaged power lines could ignite fires, hence a need to...
Go underground lines altogether. “My main aim is to try and get them underground, he said. “I understand it will be an expensive exercise and will take time. But if they could stop replacing the broken lines with the same thing and start putting them underground that would be the best for this area. The Kallista Fire Brigade has thrown their support behind Mr Pizzey, writing to the Fire Services Commissioner requesting that something be done. In a letter to the Fire Commissioner, along with other requests the brigade asked for a survey of dangerous areas where the ABC cables traverse inaccessible sections. Earlier this month, the State Government announced that major works were now underway to replace high voltage electricity distribution power lines as part of its $750 million program to reduce the risk of power lines sparking bushfires. Energy and Resources Minister Nicholas Kotsiras said works had begun at Montrose in the Dandenong Ranges, with another five projects to be carried out across the Otway and Dandenong Ranges by the middle of 2014. “The Victorian Government is committed to replacing power lines in the highest bushfire risk areas in rural and regional Victoria to reduce the risk of power lines igniting fires, Mr Kotsiras said. “By replacing these high-risk lines with aerial bundled cable, undergrounding or other covered conductor technology, we will ensure that significant power line risk reduction is achieved before the next fire season.

FIRED up firefighter Bill Pizzey wants high voltage power lines to go underground in Kallista and surrounding towns, worried they’ll be the cause of a large fire in the future. While the fire season is drawing to a close, the seasoned firefighter said he was worried a fire caused by a broken power line could spread into the forest and cause significant damage on highrisk days. Mr Pizzey said fire crews had been called to several fires caused by line faults over the past year, the latest in January a day before a day of Total Fire Ban. “In our area, we have a lot of High Voltage ABC Cable, Mr Pizzey said. “With large trees and branches falling on the lines, they degrade over time and this is how the fires start. He said the latest fire caused by the damaged power lines was in Grantulla Road, Kallista. “We had trouble putting out the fire directly as the line was still live, even when it finally failed, it burnt spectacularly for about 10 mins after we got on site, he said. “There were a number of large explosions spraying sparks and other burning material around. It was dropping lots of molten metal and burning plastic. He believes that if the fire started on the day of Total Fire Ban - the story could have been different. Mr Pizzey took the Mail on a tour around the areas he believes are most at risk, and says the only way to mitigate the risk is to remove the above ground power

Sex raid charge A 20-YEAR-OLD Lilydale man has been charged after an armed robbery at his local sex shop. The man entered Exotic Nights in Main Street, Lilydale, at 9pm on Sunday 23 March wearing a balaclava and demanded the attendant put money into a bag. He then fled on foot. Five minutes later, the same man, without the balaclava, entered the store and bought some items with the money he stole. The attendant recognised the man and called police.

said there would be more announcements on the issue to come. “It’s something the government is aware of and something the government is really working on at the moment,” he said. “It is something that needs to be fixed.” These changes will come into effect on 1 January 2015 and form part of the Coalition Government’s transport plan to deliver more services to more people in a more timely fashion.

“We would like to remind council that the pool was given to them at little or no expense and we believe that very little or nothing has been spent on it, hence its condition,” Mr Faull said. “Four months ago council knew the pool had a problem, four months later they still have not received the final engineers’ report. “We believe we have been treated like second-rate citizens to be deprived of a facility that was operating prior to this,” he said. Liberal candidate for Monbulk Mark Verschuur said he thought this was an important initiative as it would allow a lot more people to use public transport and ease car congestion inside the city area. In addition to this, the Coalition Government is providing free tram travel in

Pool protesters slam council engineering report delay YARRA Ranges Council is still waiting on an engineering report into the condition of Olinda Pool, as council confirmed the pool would not reopen until next summer. The pool was closed without warning in December after the council said irreparable cracks were found. At last month’s council meeting, the gallery was full of supporters of the pool, led by its champion John Faull. Speaking at the meeting, Mr Faull thanked the council for a very comprehensive report, but said residents didn’t entirely agree with it.

ZONE 1 and 2 daily commuters will save about $1200 a year following the Coalition Government’s recent announcement on price reduction. Liberal Member for Eastern Victoria Region Andrew Ronalds said train travel would be cheaper for Belgrave line commuters as they would be able to travel Zone 1 and 2 for the price of a Zone 1 fare. He said commuters who currently purchased a Zone 1 and 2 fare at the full rate would save around $5 a day under the new arrangement. “Commuters travelling daily for Belgrave, Tecoma, Upwey and Upper Ferntree Gully stations into the city would save around $1200 a year, while someone using an annual myki pass would save more than $750,” Mr Ronalds said. “Public transport is a really, really important issue and it’s important that we give people an opportunity to use it and help people out. “There’s no doubt that the cost of living is going up and anything we can do to as a government to help people I think is a fantastic thing it really does put money in people’s pockets.” Local commuter and university student Caitlin Fischer said the announcement made public transport a lot more accessible financially. Time to protect against disease AS A PARENT I know the importance of timely immunisations from preventable diseases not only for our children, but for ourselves and our community. Before starting school, we are reminded of the importance of ensuring young children are protected against serious contagious diseases. In the school yard, children face an increased risk of coming into contact with someone carrying an infectious disease and passing it onto others. So when we decide to immunise our children, in effect we are also protecting the lives and well being of those around us.

travelling in and out of the country. The best defence against these illnesses is immunisation. As the days are getting cooler and the flu season is upon us, I would also urge people to be immunised against influenza. It is estimated that 2800 Australians die each year either directly from the seasonal flu, complications due to flu, or pneumonia. Pneumonia vaccinations are also important for those who over the age of 65 and who maybe at high risk. Talk to your General Practitioner who will provide further information and advice. Every year influenza causes wide-
spread illness in the community, so again, immunising yourself and your family also offers protection for the community. The vaccine provides protection from about two weeks after the injection, and lasts for about one year, so even if you were immunised against the flu last year you still need to be protected this winter by having the vaccine again. Your local General Practitioner can provide further information about immunisation programs and the suitable ages to begin vaccinating children for different diseases. Vaccination is crucial if we are to

Sick kids’ cash boost By RUSSELL BENNETT BROKEN bones and serious illnesses - the kids at the Angliss Hospital’s paediatric unit have been put through the wringer. But their journey to recovery has been given a huge boost with a $40,000 donation from Emerald Rotary and the sponsors of the iconic Kids Fun Run With Thomas. The third instalment of the event was run last November and has been
instrumental in refurbishing the new children’s paediatric short stay unit, which features a specially designed area with just kids in mind. The main refurbishment also includes four paediatric beds, four wheelchairs, toys and an interactive space where kids can feel free to just be kids. “The Rotary Club of Emerald and District organises the event and enjoys knowing the funds raised are supporting a children’s project locally,” Emer-
ald Rotary president Kristine Ash said. “We use the tag line ’Kids Running for Kids’ (and) this has never been more apt than this year. “The children running raised $10,152 through online fund-raising pages, with two of the youngest runners, Jayden Regan and Nicolas Cowdery, raising $1000 apiece.” Since its inception in 2002, the Kids Fun Run With Thomas has raised $400,000 for children’s needs in the area.
“The committee works hard for nine months of the year and it is a credit to Ken Miller’s leadership of this year’s committee that the day was such a success,” Ms Ash said. Between 400 and 600 runners between the ages of three and 12 take part each year in a race against one of their biggest childhood icons - the world famous Thomas the Tank Engine - along the Puffing Billy railway track into Gembrook Station. The great all-round family day out
also includes a jumping castle, showbags and all the fun and frivolity of the Gembrook market. The sponsors who have been with the Kids Fun Run with Thomas for most of the event’s 14 year history include Puffing Billy Tourist Railway, Mitre 10/Barry Plant Emerald, Ferntree Gully Nissan and The Jefferson Group. With their help, more than $145,000 has been donated to the Angliss Hospital for its children’s paediatric ward in the past three years.

Cabinet question time By MELISSA MEEHAN A COMMUNITY forum, with the new State Government Cabinet, will be held in the Yarra Ranges on Monday 14 April. Residents will have a chance to attend the meeting and discuss local and statewide issues with Premier Denis Napthine and his team. Yarra Ranges Council will also brief the Cabinet on key local issues prior to a full Cabinet meeting. Following the Cabinet meeting, the Premier and ministers will attend a number of community events throughout the day in the Yarra Ranges area. “This visit will be the first for the Government’s new
Cabinet and will be a valuable opportunity for members of the community to discuss local matters with ministers and share their views on the future of their community,” Dr Napthine said. “I encourage residents to come along and participate in this important event.” The forum will focus on education, public transport and community facilities and how funding benefits local residents. “We are addressing the growth and infrastructure needs of the eastern region, including the Yarra Ranges, through projects such as the $1.4 million Mooroolbark Station car park upgrade,” Dr Napthine said.
“In education, the Coalition Government has invested over $19.5 million for upgrades and improvements for schools in the Yarra Ranges, including funding for Yarra Hills Secondary College, Wandin Yallock Primary School and Lilydale High School.” In 2013, the Coalition Government provided $650,000 to develop stage one of a new $9.8 million soccer hub in Monbulk. People interested in attending the community forum can register online at www.premier. vic.gov.au/cabinetvisits or for general inquiries phone 9651 5640.

YEAR 11 and 12 Upwey High School students rolled up their sleeves to give blood last Wednesday to help save lives. Initiated by school captain Danielle Weisgerber, 13 students took part in the initiative after learning the benefits of giving blood. The blood drive is part of Upwey High School’s school captain initiative program where student leaders undertake an initiative to benefit the school and the wider community. “We initially had 18 students who were going to partake but that dropped to 13 after their suitability was disqualified on the day,” Danielle said. “However, each student who donated has been able to impact on someone’s life today which is something I certainly haven’t done in this capacity before. “I’m so proud of everyone and the support they have given me in organising this event.” The Australian Red Cross Blood Service said one in three Australians will
need blood or blood products in their lifetime with one blood donation saving about three lives. Danielle said she hopes to make this an annual event on the school calendar because it helps such a respected cause and builds students relationships not only with each other but the broader community. Upwey High School leadership coordinator Peter Castillo said although it is a lot of work to organise an event such as this it’s something he believes is worthwhile. “I push them (the students) to do as much of the organisation side of things as they can as it builds on their skills, capabilities and experiences which they will be able to call upon later in life,” he said. “It’s a lot of extra work for me but if they want to do it I’m happy to allow them to do it.” For more information on donating blood, call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au.

UFTG Auxiliary secretary Di Mullins said it is quite exciting to be able to provide the hospital with improved facilities and services. “It really makes your role as a volunteer worthwhile as it gives you a sense of purpose with donations like this,” she said. Director of Nursing and Midwifery Jenny Dempster at the Angliss Hospital said the donation will enable the hospital to provide a space for parents, mothers and new babies with improved facilities. “What this money enables us to do is purchase more upto-date equipment to support women with breastfeeding difficulties and to be able to provide a more contemporary space that is light and bright and appropriately painted,” she said. UFTG Auxiliary president Maxine McPeake spoke on the eventful year the Auxiliary has had with a number of members leaving including the former president and secretary. “Whilst we thank all of our outgoing members and

Sign of mistrust GIVEN the many assurances from McDonald’s that it wanted its controversial Tecoma outlet to be ‘sensitive’ to the special environment, no-one involved in the VCAT hearing expected McDonald’s to push so hard for suburban-style corporate signage. There was even a push for a massive illuminated corporate logo pointing north to Sherbrooke Forest. One of the small mercies of the VCAT decision was to rein in these excesses, with the main Burwood Highway ‘blade sign’ capped at six metres. Those naïve enough to believe this limit would be observed were in for a rude shock. Careful measurements by concerned citizens recently revealed the sign to have cribbed an extra 25 per cent, stretching 7.5 metres. Everyone loves to put the boot into our council’s planning department but here their compliance officers deserve our plaudits for the way, on Wednesday 26 March they forced the builders to unceremoniously lop the sign until it conformed to VCAT requirements. The next time I read that McDonald’s wants to build a relationship with the local community, I’m afraid I’ll now take a cynical position. Karl Williams, Tecoma.
Labor must speak THE proposed disposal of Swinburne Lilydale including the University and TAFE is a terrible opportunity lost for future generations of students in the outer east. Does the Napthine Goverment have no concern for the future of our youth, how are they they going to access other education facilities without a car.
I spent many years going to Swinburne at Hawthorn after work some 30 years ago, it was not easy, today it would be hopeless with the large increase in traffic. Denis Napthine has just announced a $100million freebie to public transport users. If the state cannot afford to continue TAFE education in the outer east then it definitely cannot afford to give away $100 million to public transport users when the system is already overcrowded and unable to cope with the current usage. If elected, Labor needs to state quite clearly that it will compulsory acquire the site if it is sold off to a third party. Bruce Johnson, Silvan.
Curfew thanks I THINK the Yarra Ranges cat curfew is a fantastic idea. As a local resident I am sick of seeing and hearing stories of our amazing wildlife being destroyed by feral and domestic animals - it really is a serious problem and it’s not just feral animals. Many times I have had neighbours’ cats in my own garden chasing down our beautiful native birds. A lot of the shire of Yarra Ranges is a national park so to me it makes perfect sense that domestic cats should not be allowed to roam free within it. From what I can see those opposed say they were not informed of the council’s plans. I have been following this story for months. It has been in the newspapers and information has been online. I hope in time with the success of this program it perhaps spreads to neighboring shires as well. L. Cook, Upwey.

Youth art gives a raw insight By REBECCA BILLS A GROUP of 56 students from 18 local schools will have their artwork simultaneously displayed as part of the VCE Creative Showcase. Celebrating the artistic excellence of talented VCE art graduates from across the Yarra Ranges, the artwork is on display at three galleries - Jarmbi Gallery at Burrinja Cultural Centre, Red Earth Gallery at Mooroolbark Community Centre and The Studio at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre. Mater Christi College student Sierra Laird completed the Year 12 art subject in Year 11 and said she is honoured to have had her work selected to be on show at Burrinja. Ms Laird said her piece ‘District’ was made with the intention to emphasise strength and beauty beneath the frightening aspects of poverty. “It’s a piece based around poverty and it’s meant to emphasise that behind every bad moment there can still be something beautiful,” she said. “A lot of people have interpreted it in different ways but my main one was that there is still beauty beyond any pain.”
Sierra Laird with her inkjet printed photograph ‘District’. 117180 Picture: REBECCA BILLS Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said the showcase offers great insight into the raw experiences of young people and their wonderful talents. “Each student is unique and this is reflected in the diverse range of work on display,” she said. “The showcase is thought provoking and demonstrates the creative skills and courage of a new generation of emerging artists. “I am so pleased we are able to support these new talents in our community and watch them grow into the future.” The exhibition explores a
wide range of media including photography, sculpture, digital media, textiles and painting. Cr McAllister said it is inspiring to see young adults critically examine and express their feelings and experiences through artistic practice. Ms Laird’s inkjet printed photograph titled ‘District’ alongside 27 other artworks will be on show at Jarmbi Gallery at Burrinja until 13 April. The VCE Creative Showcase will also on show at Red Earth Gallery at Mooroolbark Community Centre until 17 April and The Studio at Upper Yarra Arts Centre until 3 April.

Next generation turning pages By REBECCA BILLS MACCLESFIELD Primary School kicked off the 2014 Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge with a day of non-stop reading. From 9.30am to 3.30pm last Monday students, teachers, parents and grandparents took turns sitting in a special reading area to kick start the challenge. Principal John Chiswell said the students loved the launch and thought it was very special to read stories to one another. “We have done the challenge every year and we see it as an important way of promoting reading at home and school,” he said. “The students keep a record of how they are going and that is on display in the classroom. Then the classroom also has on display how the students of each class are going as a whole.” This year is the 10th annual Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. It encourages all children and young people to develop a love of reading with the support of their parents, teachers, early childhood professionals, schools and classmates.
Children reading in the special reading chair, from left, Jude 5, Ronan 12, Gemma 5, Harrison 8, Lucy 7, Tilly 8, Lauren Picture: ROB CAREW 11 and Tia 10. 117696 Mr Chiswell said it is great to see the students so excited about reading and it is important as a school to show students the important link reading has with school, pleasure and recreational activities. “Making sure we capture all those elements of reading is essential and there is nothing more important than adults modelling healthy reading habits to their children,” he said. To take the challenge, children must read a set number of
books and record their efforts online. Since the challenge began in 2005, nearly 1.8 million children and young people have turned the pages of more than 30 million books. Mr Chiswell said a timelapse video of the reading challenge launch at Macclesfield Primary School is available to watch at the schools website, www.macclesfieldps.vic.edu.au. The reading challenge concludes in August.
Fashion round-up for turn-out THE women of the Inner Wheel Club of Wandin are teaming up once again with Monbulk fashion leaders to raise money for cord blood research. On Friday 11 April the club will present its annual fashion parade at the Wandin North Hall in conjunction with Jenny’s Shoppe and RJ Shoes. The parade has become an annual fashion pilgrimage for local women and other Inner Wheel club members and Wandin president Pauline Barrett said they are again expecting great support. “It’s great fun for a great cause,” she said. Secretary Anne Wettenhall said it is the 15th year of fundraising for cord blood research.

Picture: ROB CAREW “We, along with members of Inner Wheel across Australia, will be working toward our goal of $2 million and we are only about $40,000 short of that target,” she said. Ms Wettenhall said to date Inner Wheel had given 33 research grants to scientists working on various projects using cord blood.
“There have been many success stories of stem cell transplants from this cord blood,” she said. In addition to fabulous clothes, accessories and models, there will be raffles and merchandise for sale and a delicious country-style supper. Tickets are $15. Phone 0427 031 007 to book.
Garden gurus gather at expo Kelvin’s sci-fi military mix THE 8th Tesselaar’s Gardening and Plants Expo is on this weekend with more than 50 nursery and plant growers ready to unearth gardening treasures. Set in the historic Tesselaar Gardens, home of the iconic Tulip Festival, it is a place of inspiration for all keen gardeners. Tesselaar spokesperson Wendy Barnes said it’s a great day for all gardening connoisseurs and novices to come together to share and learn. “It’s not like our Tulip Festival where we have an abundance of food and entertainment, as the focus of this expo is on the plants and the gardens,” she said. “All the exhibits are run by specialist growers which is really great as it gives people the rare opportunity to talk with the
growers of the plant.” Ms Barnes said gardening doyen and celebrity Stephen Ryan will host the weekend with other gardening gurus like David Glenn and Meryl Johnson imparting their wisdom in free talks. Roses, spring flowering bulbs, orchids, dry garden plants, clivia, ferns, perennials, annuals, carnivorous plants, heirloom vegetables, seeds, herbs and tree growers are just some of the specialists that will be available to chat to over the weekend. A range of locally made food and refreshments will be available all weekend. Ms Barnes said if the weather is nice, a picnic lunch may be a good alternative for visitors. Well-behaved pets are also
welcome as long as they are on a lead. The 8th Tesselaar’s Gardening and Plants Expo is running from 9am to 4pm on 5 and 6 April at 357 Monbulk Road, Silvan. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for concession available online or at the gate. For more information or to book, visit www.gardeningandplantsexpo.com.au. The Mail is giving 15 lucky readers the chance to win a double pass to the 8th Tesselaar’s Gardening and Plants Expo. LOCAL Ferntree Gully resident Kelvin Kwa has created a world where the Chinese and American navies battle to retrieve an important military satellite. From the depths of the Arctic Ocean, as the two forces pursue the satellite, they are hunted by a malevolent sea-monster. Mr Kwa works in IT engineering by day and tends to a busy family life with a newborn son. He has been a keen reader for many years, honing his writing skills by enthralling himself in sci-fi fiction novels. “I started developing the basis for the story about six years ago when writing was just a hobby,” he said. “It sounds a bit strange but the idea came to me in a dream when I was struggling to fight
off a terrible fever and pounding headache brought on by the flu. “From this dream I took away a base concept and developed the rest of the story from there.” Mr Kwa said he originally thought the insurmountable task of writing a novel had proved achievable over the last two years as he crafted his debut novel - Apex Predator. He said he was ecstatic with the response the novel had received to date. Using detailed action, suspense and terrifying twists to keep the reader enthralled, Mr Kwa has an underlying environmental theme that runs throughout the story. Mr Kwa said his ability to create a thrilling novel stemmed
from his parents teaching him the love of story and narrative by taking him to the movies when he was young. “I started reading at an early age, which helped me gain an appreciation for a well-written tale,” he said. “One day I realised that I was pretty good at stringing sentences together and thought I may as well give writing a novel a shot. “I have always had stories rattling around in my head and now that I have finally started bringing these out - now I can’t wait to keep going.” Apex Predator is available online via Amazon for $5.99USD in e-book format or $26.99USD as a paperback.

Fatal mistakes cost know it. When it comes to GPS devices, they are legal, but come with a warning - exercise a bit of common sense. GRAEME Rust probably knows the pitfalls of riding on Yarra Ranges’ popular scenic motorbike routes better than most. As a member of Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol the Leading Senior Constable had ridden off-road before joining the force. He got his on-road licence as an officer when he was 19 years old and joined the then Traffic Operations Group in 1985. His credentials established, Graeme Rust would be a handy person for any bike rider to have a chat to ... without the blue and red flashing lights - ambulance or police! In addition to pursuit riding, which requires additional skills probably not recommended for recreational riders, police training included VIP escort work where one of the key lessons was about riding in a group. That’s experience many of the motocycle riders pouring into the Yarra Ranges each weekend could relate to, and learn from. Leading Sen Const Rust says there are always dangers associated with riding in a group. “It’s about making sure everyone’s on the same page and you’re not going to do something that puts yourself or someone else at risk,” he said. “The one big danger (in riding in a group) is when a friend asks ‘can I have a go on your bike’ and they’re not aware of the different capabilities and how a bike handles slightly differently.” Leading Sen Const Rust can draw on an experience on the Yarra Ranges roads for just about every conceivable situation. “I’ve been to a collision where that happened,” he says. “A group of 120-odd riders and at the half-way mark two decided to change bikes. “Within 5km down the road they came into the first bend; the first one came down and the other following too close came down next, with them both taken away by ambulance,” he said “The first one came to grief because he wasn’t fully aware of the motorcycle he was riding and the second one because he was too close to the vehicle in front. A fatal flaw.”
When you’re on two wheels there are a whole lot of things that come into play between the way different bikes ride and tyres are crucial, he said. “Under-inflated and they react one way, overinflate them and they react another way. “If you vary from the recommendations set by the manufacturers for certain types of tyres, the bike will handle differently, even if it’s the same bike.” Even when the rider is right up with the tyre pressure, there are times when a bit more attention to detail would make life a lot safer for riders and a lot less frustrating for police. “A lot of bike riders are aware of these things, but I stopped a guy riding with a group of around 12 people at Cumberland Junction near Marysville who told me he’d stopped at a service station on the way up and checked his tyre pressures,” Leading Sen Const Rust said. “Have a look at this tyre ... see how the steel belt is showing through?” he says recalling the conversation. “He said he didn’t even look at that. “The second point of contact is often skin, which means protective clothing is vital for all riders. Wearing appropriate clothing was something the TAC and Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Group push. But, apart from the helmet, there are no legal requirements to wear sensible clothing that at best could save riders from a nasty rash, at worst skin and flesh scraped to the bone on gravel. Leading Sen Const Rust said that after nearly 30 years on the road, he can still be amazed at the sight of motorcyclists riding on a hot day in sneakers, shorts and a T-shirt - and helmet. “They may feel that their skills are good enough to keep them upright, but it only takes an oil spot on the road and you don’t have that cohesion between your tyres and the bitumen surface and you’re skating on ice,” he said. “Fall off, and if you don’t have the appropriate gear on, you will be down to skin and bone.” And what about helmet cameras? Leading Sen Const Rust says no-one really knows how having a camera stuck on the side of a helmet will effect it under the ultimate pressure. The bottom line is they’re not legal and police

Bailey’s big push By REBECCA BILLS WORLD renowned wheelchair skater Christiaan Bailey took to the Mount Evelyn Skate Park to show off some moves with some extra special chair-skaters. After the Yarra Ranges Council’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy launch at Mount Evelyn’s Station House last Thursday, Bailey took to the skate park with some local boys to demonstrate their wheelchair skating talents. Bailey spends his time travelling on tour as a professional surfer and founded the Ocean Healing Group - a not-for-profit organisation that provides surf adventures to wheelchair-bound young people and their parents. The pro surfer and skater from Santa Cruz, California, spoke at the launch, and said after his 2006 skateboarding accident, that left him paralysed from the waist down, he had been determined to change the stigma associated with disability.
“Normally, with rural communities you find this general ambivalence to disability, so to be able to come into the community and help them change some of those perspectives and misconceptions is a phenomenal opportunity,” he said. “Our biggest goal is to empower kids in chairs to come out and break down their own personal barriers and have a go at some sports that normally they wouldn’t have access to. “With the adaptive surf and the especially the WCMX chair-skating aspect, it’s something that they can come down to their local park and do something off their own back, and it doesn’t require bureaucracies and teams.” Yarra Ranges mayor Fiona McAllister said a range of council projects were directly influenced by the Health and Wellbeing strategy and she was passionate about creating a healthy and active community for all residents. “I think we have achieved a lot,

but I think there is still a lot to be achieved yet - not just around infrastructure but around attitudes and social cultures,” she said. “Having someone like Christiaan here is just the right reminder that with the right mindset amazing things can blossom.” Cr McAllister said the strategy provided an approach to ensure services and projects were delivered with a focus on active ageing,
healthy eating, place-based community planning, gender equality and social, disability and cultural inclusiveness. “This is a journey we have been on for a long time and it’s always great to see a refreshed commitment to it,” she said. “I am very passionate about inclusion, health and wellbeing as well as all the other elements this strategy talks about.”
Scott more than a match for this By DENNIS FULLER A GANG of golfers at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday played a 4BBB match play round. Also a small but talented band of members fronted up for a round of par. Ian Scott (29) blitzed the field to sashay in with +6 on his card. He stood atop the podium with the victory over B Grade and the entire field. In A Grade, Conrad Whitlock (16) starred with +4 to win easily. Lakeside fun run By REBECCA BILLS AS THE cross country season is nearing, runners from around the Hills are excited about the upcoming Yarra Ranges Fun Run at Lillydale Lake. Fun run co-ordinator Michael Clarke said there is no charity partner involved in the run and it is purely a fund-raising event for the Yarra Ranges Athletics club. “The club is based at the Yarra Ranges Regional athletics facility in Mount Evelyn and fund-raising will be used to assist with improving facilities and equipment at this venue for all users including schools and the general public,” he said. Events for the whole family on the day include a two and five kilometre walk or run and a 10km run. Mr Clarke said in choosing the location to hold the run, Lillydale Lake was a “nobrainer” as it is such an iconic running venue in the area. “All courses will be well marked, and will take in the surrounding parklands of the lake including running on grassed areas and the familiar gravel trails,” he said.
“Hospital Hill has also been added into each events course.” Middle distance, crosscountry coach and club treasurer Jamie Strudley said the event preparations are going well. “At this stage it’s difficult to gauge the number of entrants there will be as usually around 50 to 60 per cent enter on the day,” he said. “We think we are going to hit our target of around 150200 athletes but it all really depends on the weather - the one thing we don’t have much control over.” Mr Strudley said this is an event where the club wants to show the wider community what the club is all about in their natural environment. The Yarra Ranges Fun Run is on Sunday 6 April with the first event starting at 9am at Lillydale Lake located on Swansea Road, Lilydale. By JODIE SYMONDS CLEMATIS sisters Erica and Janis Hosking raised the bar to compete in the Pony Club Association of Victoria State Dressage Championships in Bendigo earlier this month. The girls represented the South Metro zone in grade one and grade three dressage. Eighteen-year-old Erica said she felt good in the weeks leading up to the event. “It’s interesting when you go from big competition like Nationals, to a smaller ones like Pony Clubs,” Erica said. “When I’m at competitions, I tend to doubt myself, but my coach is really supportive and says to just own the area as if it was the big stage,” she said. “I would be nowhere without my mum or dad and my horse instructor Leanne Williams.” Erica said their family were very proud of 14-year-old Janis also qualifying for the championship. “We were so proud of her. She didn’t place, but it was better for her to get in and she rode really well,” Erica said. The girls had successful contested three qualification rounds to be able to compete in the dressage championship. Erica said although it would be outstanding to one day make it to the Olympics in dressage, it wasn’t her ultimate goal. “I just want to get to the top level I can achieve,” she said.
