Mile-long smile KIDS across the West flashed their pearly whites recently to celebrate World Oral Health Day. The Western Region Health Centre has been doing their bit for dental hygiene with the Smiles 4 Miles program, which aims to tackle the rise of tooth decay among young children. The WRHC is working with 22 preschools and childcare centres to encourage lifelong healthy habits, including eating nutritious foods, drinking tap water and brushing twice a day with regular flossing. More than 1400 local children have benefited from the program. Poppy from West Footscray’s Church St Children’s Centre practised her brushing skills recently.

Outsource outrage By CHARLENE MACAULAY

“Obviously, there is no point in outsourcing services unless there are strong value benefits both in terms of efficiency and, most importantly, service to students, partners and staff. “We are expecting some job losses in 2014 as we, like other universities, continue to face budget pressures, but the final numbers are not yet clear.” NTEU VU president Paul Adams slammed the plan during a union meeting last week. Mr Adams said the restructuring of 1100 staff last year has caused enormous administrative problems for the university, while academic workloads have skyrocketed. Meanwhile, a VU performance as-

sessment found low staff satisfaction with the six newly created shared services portfolios announced last year. “We are really worried about the future of the university ... we are worried (outsourcing) will destroy the organisation,” Mr Adams said. PhD student Natalie Zirngast uses the university’s child care and was horrified that VU considered the services to be non-core. “It’s an incredibly valuable service for those of us who use it,” Ms Zirngast said. “It’s a core business in many ways. I know I couldn’t have done the level of study I’ve done without it.”

VICTORIA University may outsource key services in a bid to cut down on university spending. Child care and IT are among the “non-core” services being considered as part of the proposal to address recent budget cuts, including a $40 million TAFE funding cut. In a statement released last week, VU Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Duncan Bentley said the university had been looking at the possibility of some outsourcing, but no firm decision had been made. Prof Bentley there was the possibility

of job cuts if the outsourcing plan was implemented. “As with many universities, VU is looking at all options to improve the service we offer to students, staff and partners and to focus on our core business of teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange,” he said. “If the university finds that noncore operations can be offered by a third party in a way that improves our core business we will certainly consider it. “With this in mind, we are exploring some options, around our facilities, infrastructure and IT operations to test the market.

By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM and Melton residents are guaranteed to benefit from the upcoming State Election with both Labor and the Coalition pledging to abolish Zone 2 public transport, a move that it is claimed will save commuters up to $750 a year. Premier Denis Napthine announced last week that if he won the November election he would remove Zone 2 and also offer free public transport within the Melbourne CBD. “For a full-fare commuter who currently buys a Zone 1 + 2 daily fare there will be a saving in the order of approximately $5.00 a day,” Dr Napthine said. “A commuter who pays for a Zone 1 + 2 ticket each day will

e t fu di g

save around $1200 each year, or, if using an annual myki pass, will save more than $750. “Tram travel within the CBD and Docklands will be free in a move that will enhance Melbourne’s reputation as an international city.” Dr Napthine said the plan would take effect on 1 January 2015 at a cost of $100 million every year. Shadow Treasurer and Member for Tarneit, Tim Pallas, said that Labor would match the plan being offered by the Coalition if they were elected. “No matter who you vote for in November, Melburnians will get cheaper public transport but only Labor will deliver better public

transport,” Mr Pallas said. “We need infrastructure plans that will remove the bottlenecks from the system so that we can run more trains more often. “Only Labor will remove the 50 most dangerous and congested level crossings, including Werribee Street and Cherry Street. Only Labor will build Melbourne Metro Rail, which would allow for a threefold increase in the number of trains to and from Wyndham in peak hour.” While Labor has promised to remove level crossings, funded by selling the Port of Melbourne, the Napthine Government is hoping it can win votes with the East West Link.

A FIVE-MINUTE film shot on a mobile phone has proved a hit around the film festival circuit. Sunshine film-maker Andrew Robb is enjoying the success of his short documentary Tofu Man, which features former Vietnamese refugee Duc Nga who came to Australia seeking a better life after being orphaned aged 14. The story, which was shot on a Samsung Galaxy S2 mobile phone, also revolves around Mr

Nga’s tofu-making business. “I like doing things on a mobile phone because you focus on the story, rather than the production value,” Mr Robb said. The film has so far won awards at the Shepparton and Sunshine Short Film Festivals, is a finalist in the Setting Sun Film Festival, and will screen later this year at the St Kilda Short Film Festival. “This film started out as a result of my curiosity,” Mr Robb said.

“I just wanted to know how tofu is made, and I’d seen Duc working in an old converted milk bar across from my house in Sunshine. “As I listened to him talking, I realised there was more to this story then just coagulated soy milk. It is an asylum seeker success story of great heart and humour, and quite timely in today’s political climate. “I could have made a much longer film - I struggled with what to fit in.”

Jobs plan fail: MP By CHARLENE MACAULAY MELTON MP Don Nardella has slammed the Napthine Government for failing to produce a jobs plan despite a marked increase in unemployment across the North West. The ALP’s Mr Nardella said the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force figures show the unemployment rate in the North West region has jumped from 6.5 per cent - or 10,200 people - under Labor in 2010 to 9.1 per ent - 16,000 people - in February 2014 under the Napthine government. The North West region encompasses the municipalities of Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley,

their doors and workers are worried about their future.” Western Metropolitan Region MP Andrew Elsbury hit back last week, saying the government was working hard to create jobs in the region. “There was a note on those statistics to say that the standard deviation is pretty high considering how small the region is,” the Liberal’s Mr Elsbury said. “We’ve got the East Werribee employment precinct project, which we’re putting our full support behind and will generate 54,000 permanent jobs over its lifespan. “We’ve also got the Airport West

Macedon, Hume and Moreland. “The new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures were shocking for Melton families and those looking for work,” Mr Nardella said. “Denis Napthine still hasn’t released a jobs plan, but Labor’s Project 10,000 will invest $2 billion on Melbourne and Regional roads and create 10,000 new jobs across Victoria. “Labor’s Plan for Jobs and Growth will see more investment in job-creating projects for communities throughout Victoria and in Melton. “Under Denis Napthine, Melton is losing jobs, businesses are closing

and Essendon Fields employment precinct that was announced by Minister (Matthew) Guy last week, so that’s an extra 15,000 jobs in the northern part of the electorate. “We also have our commitment to the East West Link, which will generate 2000 jobs in the construction industry. “Of course, we’ve had the hit from Toyota making its announcement ... but we’re working with industry at the moment to try and retool and re-organise themselves for the future. “We don’t need a document called a jobs plan, we’re just getting on with the job of creating jobs.”

New agency crime count CRIME statistics will be more accessible and transparent under the Victorian Coalition Government’s new independent Crime Statistics Agency (CSA), according to Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells. “The CSA will be charged with the responsibility of strengthening community confidence in crime statistics reporting and is an important addition to the Coalition Government’s law and order agenda,” Mr Wells said. “In addition to improving access and availability to crime data in Victoria, the CSA will undertake and publish research into crime trends in Victoria, providing Victorians with a greater understanding about patterns of offending. “The CSA will also establish a website, through which its quarterly and annual reports will be made accessible to the public.” The CSA will begin operation from 1 January 2015.

New police uniform hits the street beat POLICE in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham are sporting a new look this week. Officers stepped out in the new look dark blue uniform on Monday, which includes long sleeve shirts for all police, shirt pockets for females and tactical trousers, giving police the option between tactical and office pants. There is also summer and winter undergarment to wear under the Integrated Operational Equipment Vests. The new attire was unveiled in December

2012, and Chief Commissioner Ken Lay and other members of force command started to wear the uniform in June last year, marking the first significant change in Victoria Police’s uniform for more than 30 years. The new uniform will be rolled out progressively across the state until May. Acting Superintendent Geoff Kedge said local police were pleased to receive the new look uniforms. “There were about 80 different ways to wear the uniform, so this change will ensure a more streamlined look for Victoria Police,” he said.

“This uniform is fresh and modern and will be easily recognisable on the streets of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham. “While our uniform may have changed, our commitment to keeping the community safe remains.” Victoria Police and Rotary have teamed up to recycle around 150,000 old uniform garments, which will be collected and de-badged before being donated. Anyone interested in volunteering to help should contact their local Rotary club.

Eyesore into work of art By CHARLENE MACAULAY MISSION: to transform a 67metre-long wall littered with graffiti into a work of art. Christie Widiarto and Jared Backhouse have put their hands up to turn the French St wall into stop motion painted mural. The pair will spend the next 12 months working on the project, and have recruited a team of six to help them out. Ms Widiarto said the Foot-

scray Animated Wall Mural Project was inspired by the work of Italian street artists BLU. “I came to Footscray a year ago and I thought, there’s so many stories here,” she said. Ms Widiarto and Mr Backhouse have been busy consulting with cultural leaders in the community to bring some of these stories to life on the mural, which will be divided up by trees lining the street.

Some of the works will pay tribute to William Cooper and Auntie Marge Tucker’s fight for Indigenous rights, the Snuff Puppets, and late director / actress Sarah Watt. “I didn’t see this (becoming so big) a year ago,” Ms Widiarto said. Mr Backhouse added: “I feel like it’s very much evolving as we go. It’s very dynamic.”

Mums online By CHARLENE MACAULAY THESE two mums know how hard it can be to find a kidfriendly cafe or late-night pharmacy on short notice - now they’ve joined forces to help other parents in the West. Emily Raubenheimer and Eden Cox have launched Bubba West, a new website which provides practical information on child-friendly events and services. The website, which went live in mid-March, includes a daily events calendar, short reviews of interesting activities

and places to go in the West, recipe and craft sections, and an ever-growing list of kid-friendly cafes, playgrounds, local doctors and late-night pharmacies. There is also a blog that discusses being a parent in the West. The mums said they started the website when they realised that their Footscray mothers’ group was their main source of information on all things kids. “Local mums are sharing a huge amount of information through word of mouth, which is fantastic,” Ms Cos said.

“We wanted to gather all these invaluable ideas, suggestions and recommendations in one place to help all parents in our area to get out and connect with the events, activities and services around them.” Ms Raubenheimer added: “When you’re a new mum, venturing out can feel a little daunting. “It can be an isolating time, but there is so much going on in the inner western region that it doesn’t have to be.” For more information, go to www.bubbawest.com

Having a ball By CHARLENE MACAULAY A SEDDON resident has been appointed a community ambassador for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Gary Lee will join other leaders across Melbourne’s multicultural communities to help make Asia’s premier soccer tournament a cultural celebration for the 2.5 million people of Asian heritage living in Australia. The AFC Asian Cup will be the biggest football tournament Australia has ever hosted. Mr Lee, who is the international student and youth projects officer at the City of Melbourne, was nominated for the role by Monash councillor JiehYung Lo. “My background is in CALD communities and international

Asia, and the majority of international students, new migrants and refugees that come here are soccer fans. “Lots of us grew up watching the Premier League and the European Cup, but I guess for a long time soccer wasn’t big in Australia. “That has changed in the past few years, so we’re excited that we can see soccer on TV a bit more. “It’s also about celebrating soccer not just for the game itself, but for what it represents. I love seeing people come together, barracking for their team, and getting young people involved from the ground level. “The AFC Asian Cup tournament will be hosted for the first time in Australia from 9 to 31 January 2015.

Real change for the better ments and community experiences. Katherine, 15, represented Maribyrnong City Council during her time and has since joined the Maribyrnong Young People’s Consultative Committee to implement long-term positive changes in the local community. “We are looking at a four or five year plan to make the youth of Maribyrnong feel safer and happier in our community,” Katherine said. “So a plan that will help them have a better life - whether it’s more councillors, more rec-

reational parks, things like that. “I’ve also applied to do a World Challenge Cambodia trip, which is a student trip where we do everything, we budget our own trip, we find hotels. “After that we help out at a community shelter over there and either help rebuild water mains, rebuild schools, teach English and ... give back to the community.” The Whitten Project nominations are now open for the 2014 intake. Fritters with a twist As a teenager growing up in regional Victoria in the eighties, I remember the most sophisticated thing you could do on a Saturday night was go out for dinner at the local Chinese restaurant. My brother and I would spin the Lazy Susan and fiddle with the plastic chopsticks while my parents ordered a selection of sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken and beef in black bean sauce. And we ALWAYS finished off the meal with our all-time favourite – a speciality of Chinese restaurants the world over: Banana fritters and ice cream. This week’s recipe is a delicious twist on the battered variety. Instead of batter, you use spring roll wrappers. They’re so easy to make and you can prepare them ahead of time. I’ve also seen a variation on this recipe, where you sprinkle a few choc chips on the banana pieces before wrapping, instead of brown sugar. Your choice!

BANANA SPRING ROLLS 2 bananas 8 frozen spring roll wrappers, thawed 2 tablespoons brown sugar Vanilla ice cream, to serve Peel the bananas and halve them lengthwise, then cut each piece in half again. This will give you eight pieces. Fill a deep fryer or large “I don’t saucepan 1/3 full with oil and heat like foo arr d over a medium heat to 170 degrees is anged. Repeat with remaining wrappers, banana and brown sugar. Fry banana spring rolls for four minutes or until evenly browned all over. Remove with slotted spoon, drain on paper towels and serve with WESTPOINT ice cream. Good luck stopping at one. Source: That’s Life. Food Bytes proudly sponsored by Westpoint Ford

FEET are vital for mobility and balance and are the basis of most of our daily activities. Many people aren’t aware that bad foot posture can continually pull our bodies out of alignment, causing problems in ankles, shins, knees, hips, backs and necks. Early symptoms for diabetes, arthritis, nerve and circulatory problems often show themselves initially in the feet. Scientific research clearly demonstrates the direct effect that chronic foot pain can have upon both physical and mental health. Foot and leg problems left untreated almost always get worse. These can include common ailments such as plantar fasciitis, heel, shin, ankle and knee pain which can often be misdiagnosed and mistreated. Common treatments such as cortisone and anti-inflammatory medications are proven to delay healing and cause further damage in many cases. Contrary to popular belief, an experienced sports podiatrist is the most appropriate person to diagnose and assist foot and leg pain. Thanks to the latest medical research and treatments, most foot and leg pain injuries can be treated simply and effectively without the use of damaging medications or surgery. The key to healing is correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment. An experienced sports podiatrist has the specific knowledge and expertise to assist pain, injuries and degenerative issues concerning feet and lower limbs. Dr Paul Dowie, renowned sports podiatrist and founder of Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, one of Australia’s most experienced podiatry practices focused on assisting pain and injury said: “People

Hanging out for some special time SPENDING intentional un-interrupted time with a child has infinite rewards. No matter the quantity or quality of the toys they may have, it will never compare to simply being with their parents. Child development experts suggest that these little bits of special time will add up to an increased trust and emotional/ relational bond that will enable a child to feel secure and less likely to act out negatively

for attention. These experiences will also set a foundation for the future relationship with a parent to thrive even as they grow more and more independent. Strive to have several five to 15 minutes periods of special time rather than engaging for one long block of time with toddlers and pre-schoolers. Special time provides children with some structured way of knowing when their parents are available.

It will meet the need they have to feel connected and to have a feeling of security about their place in the family. With sufficient positive interaction, they won’t have to act out negatively in order to get attention. Knowing their parent will spend time with them at planned times throughout the day will encourage better independent play as well. To get started, plan with

the child some things that they would like to do. Give them some choices if they cannot think of anything. Later, remind them about the special time you had together and that another special time is coming. Do not take special time away as punishment for

behaviour earlier in the day. Being able to count on special time with a parent provides them with support and a sense of unconditional love and connection. Great ideas of things to do with a child could include going to the library - stay for story time - baking something,

constructing something with blocks or Lego, drawing or colouring together. Another great idea is to host a play date with their favourite friend, dress up together, swimming indoor or outdoor, have a picnic outside or even on the living room floor or visit a museum or zoo.

HOPPERS CROSSING VETERINARY CLINIC & HOSPITAL

This is Sheldon the standard poodle puppy who had lovely clean ears at his check-up at our clinic.

Listen in to ear problems ONE of the medical conditions we see on a daily basis at our vet clinic is a dog with an ear problem. The pet usually presents with a sore or smelly ear which is caused by an infection. Occasionally this may progress to a large swollen ear flap known as an aural haematoma. Ear infections are caused by organisms such as ear mites, bacteria or yeast growing in the ear or by a foreign object such as a grass seed lodged down the ear canal. Your vet will need to exam-

ine down the ear canal with an otoscope and take samples to look at under a microscope to make a diagnosis. Prescription ear drops and sometimes oral medications may be needed to properly clear an infection. Ear cleaners which remove wax and dirt build up may be used to prevent the ear infection from returning in the future. Underlying skin allergies may be the cause of an ear infection returning as could incomplete medical treatment. An aural haematoma is a big

bruise between the cartilage and skin of the ear flap. It is often associated with vigorous head shaking, possibly due to an ear infection, trauma or allergies. Surgery under anaesthesia to repair the ear is usually required as well as medications to prevent pain and infection. Untreated haematomas may lead to a deformed or cauliflower-type appearance to the ear. Recurring ear disease can be frustrating for pets, owners and their vets so a thorough investigation and course of treatment is essential.

Meet Chester. Chester wants to be friends with everyone – he’s a sociable fella . Though he’d like to go to a quiet home, Chester would love to spend lots of time inside with his family. Chester is best suited to a home with no other pets. He likes to keep in shape, and enjoys daily walks. While Chester has had some basic training, he could benefit from brushing up on his manners. Beneath Chester’s soft and fluffy exterior is a big heart – a heart with a murmur. He needs an owner that will ensure he can continue to receive the necessary veterinary care for this condition. 44 Watton Street, Werribee

THIS is an amazing lifestyle home featuring more than 100 squares of luxury living. It is a Queen Anne inspired residence which sets a high standard for family living. Situated on a 1/2 acre, 2300 square metre block of ornamental garden surrounds, this stunning home offers grand formal living areas boasting centrepiece crystal chandeliers and ornate fireplaces, a magnificent billiard room sporting a 5.5metre mahogany bar and a large self-contained reception room with its own external door and entrance. The kitchen comes with a host of quality inclusions and finishes that include imported granite bench tops and splashbacks, a concealed fridge and dishwasher and a custom-built dresser. An extra-large butler’s pantry with twin sinks provides additional preparation and storage room. The north-south wing of the home accommodates the four large bedrooms, two with ensuites, and a gentlemen’s library or home office with an ornate fireplace and custom-built cabinetry. The indoor pool and sauna complex with adjoining bathroom facilities overlooks the main courtyard that features an extensive deck area and water feature. A detached outdoor entertaining area

with cooking facilities and split-system air-conditioning will easily cater for large crowds of family and friends. The gardens are fully serviced by an automated in-ground sprinkler system which is connected to several rain water tanks with a capacity of about 25,000 litres, and the four-car garage has remote control panel doors and internal access into the laundry. Westbourne Grammar, Al Taqwa College, Thomas Carr College and Wyndham Village Shopping Centre are all located close by. This home once featured in a luxury home design magazine and its list of high end features is too numerous to mention.

From April 2014 – May 2014, Melbourne Water is undertaking a control program at Truganina Swamp to reduce the number of rabbits. This is part of our commitment to responsible land management, biodiversity conservation and continued good amenity for our neighbours.

The Growth Areas Authority (now known as the Metropolitan Planning Authority, MPA), in consultation with the Wyndham City Council, Government agencies and service authorities has prepared a draft Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) for development of a new precinct known as Tarneit North. The plan applies to the area bounded by Boundary Road to the north, Derrimut Road to the east, Leakes Road to the south and Davis Road to the West. Amendment C188 also includes six concurrent planning permits proposing residential subdivision for approximately 3,000 lots, sets aside land for parks, roads and three future education facilities. Tarneit North PSP envisions the development of a new residential community of about 9,900 new homes, a town centre, schools, community and sports facilities, local parks and new road infrastructure. The PSP, planning permits and associated documents are now available for community consultation. Pending resolution of any matters raised through the consultation, the MPA intends to recommend that the Minister for Planning approve the plans, planning permits and associated documents as planning scheme Amendment C188 to the Wyndham Planning Scheme. Late burst downs Jets By ADEM SARICAOGLU A SEVEN-GOAL burst was the difference between the Western Jets and the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup on Sunday. The Jets kept up with Sandringham for threeand-a-half quarters at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, but the Dragons managed to kick clear late in the piece to come away with a solid 46-point win. A low-scoring first half had Sandringham in front by a kick at the main break and as the game broke open in the third stanza, it was the Dragons who managed to convert on the scoreboard. By three-quarter time the margin was out to 22 but the Jets clawed their way back to peg it down to single figures in the final term. However, the Dragons’ seven goals to the Jets’ three sealed the result, handing the latter its second loss in as many games. Jets coach Torin Baker said he was pleased to see his side improve its attack on the footy after going down to the Cannons in round one - but will be hoping his forward line can make more of its opportunities count in coming weeks. Brenton Payne and Jayden Laverde each combined for four of the Jets’ eight goals on the day (two goals each). Billy Myers, Hayden Bray, Liam Duggan and Brandon Coletta each kicked a goal of their own. Draft prospects Corey Ellis, Dillon Viojo and Connor Menadue were among the Jets’ best on the day, while defender Harley ArmstrongWeston also drew praise from his coach for a solid display down back. The Jets will have a chance to rectify their 0-2 start this Sunday away to the Oakleigh Chargers before hosting the Northern Territory at Williamstown’s Burbank’s Oval in round four. The Jets sit 12th on the table and join the Gippsland Power, Bendigo Pioneers, North Ballarat Rebels and Eastern Ranges as the TAC Cup’s remaining winless clubs.

The top Dogs By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater saved its best for last in the Victorian Premier Cricket final. The Bulldogs dominated Essendon for two and a half days before putting the Bombers out of their misery before lunch on Sunday. In arguably its strongest showing of the season, Footscray won by a staggering 359 runs, capping off a truly amazing season. Almost everything went according to plan for the Bulldogs after they won the toss and batted first on day one. Despite the early wicket of Anthony Barton, the Footscray batting line-up always looked in control with some big scores up for grabs. Travis Dean showed why he is

going to be pushing for selection in the Victorian state team in years to come, blasting a brilliant 138. Dean’s knock came off 247 balls and included 18 boundaries. He also combined for a 158 run stand with wicket-keeper Dylan Kight who made 59. In any other match, 138 would normally be enough to secure man of the match honours. However, they were saved for middle order batsman Shanuka Dissanayaka, who was able to take Footscray from a strong position to an unbeatable one. Dissanayaka hit an incredible 175 not out, sending the bowling attack to all parts of the Junction Oval. His innings came off 258 balls

and included 23 boundaries. Everything was going right for Footscray with lower order batsmen Guy Walker (37), Hamish WinterIrving (43) and Jake Haberfield (24) adding to the total. Footscray captain Dean Russ eventually declared his side’s innings with the score at 8/526 after 157 overs. An impossible chase on paper was made even harder by a rampaging Haberfield who took the new ball. The gun quick dismissed Aaron Shellie just four balls into the innings. John Hastings then got in on the act, removing Ben MacRae for six. With Essendon at 2/14 there was

more pain on the way as Haberfield returned to knock over Solomon Mire for just one. Aaron Ayre and Shane McNamara followed soon after and with the score at 5/55, any hope of an unlikely victory was dashed. Footscray went on to claim the final wicket with the score at 167 off 43.1 overs. Haberfield was again the star with the ball, taking 6/58. The remaining wickets were shared by Hastings, Winter-Irving and Michael Kelly. For Essendon, Clinton McKay top scored for the innings with 35. The flag is Footscray’s second in the club’s history, the first since the 1979/80 season.

Dillon Viojo was one of the Western Jets’ better players on Sunday. 105187 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

Grooming a young side

In the

Doghouse

KEVIN HILLIER

West at its best in interleague GREAT to see the WRFL interleague side victorious over the Southern Football League last Saturday at Princess Park. It is over a decade since the last WRFL senior interleague and I hope our clubs have grown up enough to accept the concept into the future. I know club success is important, but if we all believe that our competition is getting better (and it is) let’s continue to embrace this pre-season championship, and get the WRFL up the ladder of suburban comps. Well done to Brett Jacobs and his coaching staff, the players and everyone involved on the day and in the lead-up. WRFL football operations manager David Newton deserves special mention for his contribution, as does Steve Thom the chairman of selectors. The players enjoyed the experience and deserve full recognition as they did it for the love of the jumper and nothing else. Altona’s Lee Spiteri was awarded the medal for best on ground. Well done to all who made our competition win and look good. Isn’t it nice to have a positive outcome? Let’s get the seniors involved in the junior interleague now to cement the connection for years to come. I want the WRFL juniors to look up to the Tim Jenkins, Brad Juliers and Lee Spiteris of the world in the future. They deserve that, and so does our competition. THIS weekend sees the start of the WRFL season with St Albans hosting Deer Park in the season opener on Friday night under lights at Kings Park Reserve. At the WRFL season launch I was MC and I was taken by the onstage speech of Deer Park president Mark McGoldrick. He spoke of the club’s commitment to juniors and the community but then said when it comes to senior footy that it’s “business - it is about winning flags”. That is the first time I have heard that from Mark, and I have no problem with that, I am just glad that he has put it out there in those terms. I have been receiving emails from a lot of people in regards to my comments on money in local football. I want to finish this debate by saying the following - I don’t care what any club pays their players, local footy has changed, I don’t like the influence of money, but I understand it is a reality. My concern is that clubs forget their juniors in the pursuit of a flag and if that happens, then we all lose. Happy to hear your thoughts. I AM disgusted that two cricket wickets were doctored in the finals this year. The West Newport one really riles me, and the Werribee CC one is just good enough. Clearly the people involved in both cases are a vigilante group, not club people, who have decided to fix the result of a game. That is pathetic. Have I played with blokes who might be capable of this kind of action? I don’t think so. I played in both winning and losing grand finals and I have both happy and sad memories of both, and I cherish both. That is sport. The boofheads involved in both of these incidents just don’t get it and we all need to get these people out of our lives. I hope we track them down and kick them out of our clubs and competitions. YOU can hear the coverage of the WRFL this Saturday on 88.9 WYN FM from 1.30pm from Merv Hughes Oval with the Match of the Day between Parkside and Manor Lakes. Steve Thom and I are in our 12th year and we are both as keen as day one. We have a new team working with us this year who we hope will kick the same goals as before. IF you have any news or events please let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia. com.au and you can follow me on Twitter @KevinHillier and check out the website howdypartnersmedia.com.au

NEW Footscray coach Lachlan Anderson wants to focus on developing the club’s abundance of talented youth this coming season. That said though, Anderson is still hoping his Bulldogs can go one step better and play finals Premier League hockey in 2014. The Bulldogs just missed out on the finals action last year, finishing sixth on the table with nine wins and six draws. “We’ll want to improve on that,” Anderson said. “That means basically we’ll want to make finals and that being said, we’ll want to improve on the wins and losses from last year as well. “So it’s not necessarily going to be a ladder position improvement, it’ll be turning some of those draws into wins and turning some of those losses into draws and all that sort of thing. “That might not necessarily translate into a ladder position change, but it’ll hopefully be a points-accumulated change and with that it obviously starts to breed a culture of success.” Footscray will welcome the return of gun imports Leah Merrett and Megan Berriman, albeit after both dealt with injury troubles over the summer. Sam Ellis has been lost to Doncaster, but the Bulldogs have gained youngster Nicole Julian who will add to the wealth of up-and-comers who can expect plenty of time on the field this season.

Footscray will face up to old foe Altona in the season opener this weekend. 103378 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT “She’ll be someone that we’ll keep an eye on and try to develop,” Anderson said of Julian. “She’s really physically strong and fit and we’re trying to develop her game because she’s got the basic skill level to hopefully build some strong foundations on.

“From our perspective, the younger girls are now 17 and 18 and obviously getting more hockey under their belt. “So they’re learning to play within the team structure and format that is slightly different from last year.”

Falcons tighten grip on top spot By LIAM TWOMEY CITY West Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the Victorian Netball League ladder after another crushing win last week. The Falcons smashed the Southern Saints by 19 goals, 53-34. From the word go it was a dominating City West outfit that hit the court as the margin was quickly out to seven by the first break. From there, the Falcons continued to control the game and extended the lead across the next three quarters. Alice Teague-Neeld was incredibly accurate around goals

for City West, shooting at 96 per cent throughout the night. Teague-Neeld finished with 20 goals from her 21 attempts while fellow shooters Kathleen Knott and Julia Woolley finished with 23 and 10 goals respectively. In total, City West had 20 more attempts on goal for the match. The result maintains the Falcons’ one game lead over Boroondara Genesis on the VNL ladder. In other results, VU Western Lightning overcame a tough first quarter to get the better of Fed Uni Ballarat Pride by 19 goals, 61-42. Despite being winless and on the bottom of the ladder, the

Pride fought hard during the first quarter, keeping the deficit to just two at the break. However, the longer the match went the more VU began to take control as the margin spiked. Of the Lightning’s 61 goals, Kate Thompson shot 45. After a slow start to the year, VU is now a game clear inside the top four, occupying fourth spot on the ladder. When round eight gets underway this week, the two Western Suburbs clubs will clash at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. League’s season of change starts

WRFL Preview season 2014 4s eason

By LIAM TWOMEY THE 2014 Western Region Football League season is shaping up as one of the most interesting in the league’s history. As well as the battle for top honours in Division One, there are a number of sub-plots set to play out throughout the season. Across Divisions One and Two, 17 new coaches will take the reins in round one. After round 13, the bottom six teams in Division Two will make up the newly created Division Three. For the second successive year, the WRFL will also have a brand new club with the Tarneit Titans making their debut. However, league CEO Bob Tregear isn’t taking his eyes off the future. After a lot of hard work, he and his board have got the league going upwards at a rate of knots and they are keen to continue the trend. One of their key goals during the next few years is to continue expanding the league with Tregear nominating a number of possible locations for new clubs. “It (the formation of new clubs) will happen in the new development areas,” Tregear said. “In Wyndham it will be places like Williams Landing and Truganina where there are new developments. We are also looking further north and, as the Melton corridor develops south, we will also be looking to develop clubs there.” However, the league is making sure it isn’t focusing on expansion to the detriment of its current clubs. Tregear added that finding a way to help struggling clubs is a key priority. “We are talking to AFL Victoria about how to do that at the moment,” Tregear said. “It is really a matter of having

A whole season’s work came down to one point in last year’s WRFL Division One competition. 105750 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI enough financial resources to do that. Some of those clubs really need some on-the-spot help. “It is going to take time and money to do that but we need to find a way to achieve that and raise the funds to do it. “We are very confident that we will keep all of the clubs we have got and we will be able to develop

some new ones as well.” Building on the expanding senior competition, the WRFL is also enjoying healthy growth in the juniors. The league is expecting at least six new junior teams to compete in the competition this season. Its only area of concern is the under-18 grade, which had just 14 teams last year.

“The under-18s will be the challenge,” Tregear said. “We were down to 14 teams last year and we are hoping for 16 or 17 this year. We really need to have about 24. “It took a dive last year so it is up one year down the next. It’s not enough to say it is a trend. I think it creates a challenge for everybody.”

West on rise in league clash of champions By LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League celebrated its return to interleague football with an impressive 37-point win on Saturday. Taking on the Southern Football League at Visy Park, the WRFL side looked in complete control throughout the contest and led at every change. Matthew Dean, Kwame McHarg and captain Jason Cloke were all among the best players, while Lee Spiteri was presented with the medal for the most valuable player. WRFL coach Brett Jacobs was rapt with his side’s performance. “We weren’t expecting a six-goal win, that’s for sure,” he said. “At the start we said 10 to 12 goals would probably win it so we thought it would be a low scoring game. We put a big emphasis on pressure. Being a preseason format we were sure that would be the best way to go and ... it worked for us.” Despite still coaching his own team (Sunshine), Jacobs said he and his coaching group found time to scout the SFL before the match. “We did a bit of work on the footy forums, Big Footy and what not,” he said.

“We did as much research as we could and looked at club websites and all that sort of stuff. We got some valuable information. I shouted one of my old mates who played in the league a lunch earlier this week and got a bit of juice out of him so it was all beneficial.” After starting the interleague format ranked number five, the WRFL now jumps to number four and will take on the Eastern Football League next season. The winner of that match will earn the right to play for the number one ranking the following year. “We were very happy with the process,” Jacobs said. “The majority of the players in the league made themselves available. We had a good squad to choose from. We had some great support. Steve Thom has been awesome through the whole process. Tymmsy (assistant coach Aaron Tymms) and Freez (assistant coach Aaron Freeland) have been terrific for me. “I think you will find a lot more players will put their hand up to participate next year. We hope it stays on for a few more years. I am a big fan of it and think it is fantastic.”
