Councils’ tip clash By YASEMIN TALAT BRIMBANK City Council has objected to the application before the City of Melton for the expansion of the Boral Landfill. At an ordinary council meeting last Tuesday night, administrators declared that the Brimbank City Council would lodge an objection for the expansion because of the potential impact to local residents. Chair of Administrators John Watson said the existing odour problems from the landfill site must be resolved before any expansion was considered. “Our residents have a basic right to clean air, and as a good neighbour Boral’s number one business priority must be addressing the odour problem caused by the site before planning future expansion,” Mr Watson said. “Although we are not the responsible planning authority for this application, we have received a number of

complaints from our residents regarding amenity issues associated with the landfill which we take very seriously,” he said. In November last year, Boral lodged a planning amendment with Melton City Council to dramatically increase the size of the existing tip to 179 million cubic metres or the equivalent of 105 times the size of the MCG. The Boral Landfill site is about 1.5 kilometres from residential buildings in Brimbank. Residents from both municipalities have initiated action against the propos-
al through a number of means including the “Stop The Tip” group, which will hold a community rally in Melton today. “We can’t simply refuse the application because it isn’t in Brimbank, however we can certainly object and make it known that Brimbank City Council cannot support any expansion until these problems are resolved,” Mr Watson said. Administrators agreed that the facility was important for the area, but that it had to be managed properly. “There is no question that the Boral Landfill plays an important role in managing waste for the West, and we see our

role as helping to influence the best outcomes for the operation of the site and our nearby community,” Mr Watson said. “Essentially, council is seeking to find the best balance between the needs of the greater west for waste management with those of nearby residents to the landfill site,” he said. As part of the objection, Brimbank City Council will also seek an increased buffer zone (up to 1000 metres) and that the expansion be reduced in size to enable future expansions to be approved in stages. Melton City Council’s general manager Planning and Development Luke Shannon said the council had received 3800 objections to date, and council officers were in the process of assessing the application. “Council officers will then prepare a complete report, which will be considered by council at an open council meeting,” Mr Shannon said. “No date has yet been set.”

Hire fees higher By YASEMIN TALAT BRIMBANK City Council has launched an updated draft Sports Facility Hire, Licenses and Leases Agreement Policy and is seeking community feedback over an eight-week consultation phase. The council’s community well-being director Neil Whiteside said the recommendations as part of the draft were important steps to ensure equity across sporting clubs in the municipality and to gain broader community engagement. As part of the draft there will also be a review on the current fees and charges, which means there will be an increase to fees across the board, Mr Whiteside said. “At the moment there’s a rental amount flat fee of $160,” Mr Whiteside said. “And it doesn’t matter if the club has the best facility in Brimbank or the worst, that’s what they pay.” “So we very much want to
make sure we can link the fees to the facility and make it more equitable.” Under the current policy clubs pay a minimal fee of $160 a year, with sports clubs in other municipalities contributing upwards of $1000, with an average cost closer to $3000 or $4000 for the use of similar facilities, Mr Whiteside said. Chairman of Brimbank Administrators John Watson said there was a strong need to update the current Sports Facility Agreements Licences and Leases Policy (2006). “Under the proposed policy new agreements will significantly benefit the Brimbank community and clubs as they will focus on clubs actively engaging with the entire Brimbank community to provide participation opportunities in addition to covering the operational requirements of clubs and the council,” Mr Watson said. “While the new policy will
bring fees more into line with industry standards, clubs in Brimbank would still pay less than those in surrounding municipalities if they take advantage of the incentives offered,” he said. There will be an extensive consultation period with clubs until 21 May. There will also be two information session during this time open for all to attend. These will be on Thursday 10 April and Monday 14 April both from 6.30pm at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine. Interested people and clubs may provide written feedback on the draft policy during the consultation period to Leisure Services, Brimbank City Council, PO Box 70, Sunshine Vic 3020, or emailed to LeisureFeedback@brimbank.vic. gov.au For more information visit brimbank.vic.gov.au or call 9249 4917.
Smoke-free outdoor play ming pools and at sporting venues during under 18s sporting events. Melton City Council will enforce the new legislation, which aims to provide children and young people with a healthy, smoke-free environment in which to play and be active. Mayor Bob Turner says the council’s first priority is to ensure smokers are aware
of the new laws. “An educative approach is what’s required as people adjust to the new laws. However, people who are found to be wilfully flouting the law will be fined.” A penalty fine of $144 can be issued on the spot by Council Local Laws Officers. The Zsana Collection will hit the fashion runway at the charity event to support the Olive Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre at the Watergardens Hotel on Wednesday 23 July.
Zsaneta has already been busy preparing for the event and said she was excited to launch the collection alongside a good cause. “I think it’s a good idea to do these shows and raise money for different foundations,” Zsaneta said. “I know that it helps people and it helps the organisations, it’s all for a good cause,” she said. Zsaneta also spends her time working closely with the Macedonian community in Brimbank and has supported various Macedonian churches

Dangerous driving hunt is on the horizon By YASEMIN TALAT POLICE have flooded freeways across Melbourne as part of an ongoing operation to reduce dangerous driving in the lead up to Easter. Operation Horizon kicked off last week with police scanning roads during peak hour times to ensure safety for all commuters. Roads to be targeted include the Western Ring Rd, Calder Freeway, Princes Freeway, Tullamarine Freeway, Hume Freeway, EastLink, Monash Freeway, Eastern Freeway and the Geelong Ring Rd. “During Operation Horizon, peo-
ple can expect to see a strong police presence on our roads,” said Acting Superintendent David Griffin. Acting Superintendent Griffin said the heavy volumes of traffic on major arterial roads, combined with impatience, sometimes led to drivers taking unnecessary and unacceptable risks. “During the peak hour rush, people are often in a hurry, creating unnecessary stress and a sense of panic that causes errors in judgement,” he said. “We’ve had an horrendous start to the year and the last thing we
need is more tragedy on our roads, particularly leading into the Easter and Anzac Day periods, which are critical periods for the community in terms of road trauma risk,” he said. Acting Superintendent Griffin said peak hours were high risk periods when many crashes occurred and he warned motorists to keep patient on the roads. “People who have not planned their journey properly, or who are running late for work, can become impatient and are more inclined to take shortcuts or engage in risky behaviour to try to make it to their
destination on time,” he said. “Tailgating and using technology while driving are also common offences we see during these times,” he said. “We are asking people to take a deep breath, slow down and ensure they arrive at their destination safely. Running late for work or being in a hurry to get home is no excuse for doing the wrong thing.” At the time of publication the road toll was 65, higher than the road toll from this time last year, which was 59. Operation Horizon will run until 11 April.
Woman charged over baby death HOMICIDE Squad detectives have charged a woman following the death of a baby found in St Albans earlier this month. An 18-year-old Deer Park woman was charged on Friday morning with child homicide. She was due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later that same morning. The newborn baby was found concealed under a tree on Ruth St, St Albans - 50 metres from the woman’s home - and only metres from a primary school crossing. – Yasemin Talat

New heart of community By YASEMIN TALAT THE detailed designs of Brimbank’s new Community and Civic Centre have been completed paving the way for construction to start on the $52 million project later this year. The new building, which will be home to the new Sunshine Library, council chambers and a number of tenants, is on track for completion by mid-2016 with construction planned to commence in September this year. Chair of Administrators John Watson said the completed designs were of exceptional quality and
would result in a first-class community and civic centre. “The work undertaken during the detailed design phase confirms that this will be one of the outstanding buildings in Melbourne’s growing West,” Mr Watson said. “The striking design, which draws on the sawtooth industrial heritage of the site, will open up onto Hampshire Rd and the surrounding precinct, creating a great environment for learning and community collaboration,” he said. The Sunshine Library will be the centrepiece of the new building, set over the first two floors, with read-
ing rooms dedicated for different user groups and will also include an indoor and outdoor children’s play area. The heritage harvester machine will also move into the new building. Mr Watson said the council hoped to suspend the harvester from the roof of the foyer area so that it would be visible from all sides and both floors. A new customer service centre and a local history interpretive centre will also be on the ground floor, and the second floor will also have a learning centre and community rooms, the council chambers and exhibition space.
Mr Watson said the new buidling was important for the efficiency of the council, which has staff spread over a number of offices, and would have long-term economic benefits by cutting considerable costs associated with rent and maintenance of the current old buildings, among other things. “Now that the detailed design has been finalised, the next phase of the project includes preparing the tender documentation and calling for expressions of interest from suitable contractors.” Sunshine Library and Customer Service centre will be temporarily relocated during the works.

Brimbank City News the dynamic centre of the West
Message from your Council At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 25 March, Brimbank City Council endorsed a motion to object to the application in the City of Melton for the expansion of the Boral Landill because of the potential impact to local residents. The existing odour problem from the landill site must be resolved before any expansion was considered. Brimbank residents have a basic right to clean air and as a good neighbour Boral’s number one business priority must be addressing the odour problem caused by the site before planning for future expansion. L–R Jane Nathan, Administrator, John Watson, Chair of Administrators, John Tanner, Administrator
As part of its objection Council will be seeking increased bufer zones (up to 1,000 metres) based on its licence for prescribed waste.
This will also help mitigate against additional amenity impacts. Council is also submitting that any expansion be reduced in size to enable future expansions to be approved in stages. We can’t simply refuse the application because it isn’t in Brimbank however we can certainly object and make it known that Brimbank City Council cannot support any expansion until these problems are resolved. March for minds By YASEMIN TALAT THE youth of Brimbank rallied together last week to ‘March for Mental Health’. On Friday youngsters and supporters in the community came together to March for Mental Health as part of The Fifth Army Day of Action movement led by headspace Sunshine. The movement aimed to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health and promote support for young people facing mental health issues, or who needed to help a friend or family member. Manager of the headspace
Sunshine Centre Kim Wood said the centre was excited to part of the national event. “It’s important that we spread the message that it’s okay for young people to talk about how they’re feeling when they are going through a tough time,” Ms Wood said. “Often young people find it difficult to seek help when they are going through a difficult time,” she said. “It’s important for days like this to raise awareness and show young people there’s a lot of support available.” Ms Wood hoped events like the march, and the many other various events organised
throughout the year, would help combat the stigma attached to mental health. “We know there is a large number of young people who are going through a tough time but only a small percentage of them are seeking help,” Ms Wood said. The crowd marched peacefully down Hampshire Rd, Sunshine and its surrounds chatting to the community, handing out giveaways and sharing information. AS THE social media phenomenon that is the “no make-up selfie” makes its way around the internet this week to raise awareness of breast cancer, the BreastScreen Clinic in Sunshine is concerned about the declining number of women being checked. The latest BreastScreen Victoria participation rate report for the Derrimut electorate showed that only 50 per cent of women aged between 50 and 69 living in the area used the free service between 2011 to 2013. Staff at the Sunshine BreastScreen Clinic say they are are worried about the drop in screening participation by Brimbank residents and said that many appointment slots remained unfilled.
Keilor Downs breast cancer survivor Jean Tavares is encouraging all women not to be complacent about their health. The 64-year-old breast cancer survivor was first diagnosed in 1997 and has since fought three recurrences, in 2000, 2009 and 2011. “My cancer was discovered through a mammogram,” Ms Tavares said. “It really is a few minor moments of discomfort for maximum benefit,” she said. Ms Tavares, who has now been in remission for three years, urged women to have a breast screen every two years. “If it’s found early, treatment is generally much less invasive,” she said. Ms Tavares is passionate about spreading the message

By CHARLENE MACAULAY MELTON MP Don Nardella has slammed the Napthine Government for failing to produce a jobs plan despite a marked increase in unemployment across the North West. The ALP’s Mr Nardella said the most recent Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force figures show the unemployment rate in the North West region has jumped from 6.5 per cent or 10,200 people - under Labor in 2010 to 9.1 per cent - 16,000 people - in February 2014 under the Napthine government. The North West region encompasses the municipalities of Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley, Macedon, Hume and Moreland. “The new Australian Bureau of Statistics figures were shocking for Melton families and those looking for work,” Mr Nardella said.
“Denis Napthine still hasn’t released a jobs plan, but Labor’s Project 10,000 will invest $2 billion on Melbourne and Regional roads and create 10,000 new jobs across Victoria. “Labor’s Plan for Jobs and Growth will see more investment in job-creating projects for communities throughout Victoria and in Melton. “Under Denis Napthine, Melton is losing jobs, businesses are closing their doors and workers are worried about their future.” Western Metropolitan Region MP Andrew Elsbury hit back last week, saying the government was working hard to create jobs in the region. “There was a note on those statistics to say that the standard deviation is pretty high considering how small the region is,” the Liberal’s Mr Elsbury said.
“We’ve got the East Werribee employment precinct project, which we’re putting our full support behind and will generate 54,000 permanent jobs over its lifespan. “We’ve also got the Airport West and Essendon Fields employment precinct that was announced by Minister (Matthew) Guy last week, so that’s an extra 15,000 jobs in the northern part of the electorate. “We also have our commitment to the East West Link, which will generate 2000 jobs in the construction industry. “Of course, we’ve had the hit from Toyota making its announcement ... but we’re working with industry at the moment to try and re-tool and re-organise themselves for the future. “We don’t need a document called a jobs plan, we’re just getting on with the job of creating jobs.”

Education for a positive future
Happy, high in the saddle By YASEMIN TALAT THE Happiness Cycle rode into Brimbank last week with over 270 Brimbank teens receiving a brand new bike from attending the event. The Happiness Cycle, an initiative by Coca-Cola, aims to help teens become more active by partnering with the Bicycle Network and donating bikes. Last Thursday, 277 teens from schools across the municipality spent the day at the West Sunshine Community Centre where they assembled their new bikes - choosing either a BMX, hybrid or single-speed bike. Australian BMX 2012 Olympic medallist Sam Willoughby is the official ambassador of the program, which is aimed at teens aged between 15 to 17. Willoughby urged teens to give cycling a go and enjoy the freedom that came with having a bike. “I was fortunate enough to have a bike as a teenager and it quickly became an important part of my lifestyle,” he said. “My bike was my passport to freedom and it’s great to see Brimbank take part in this movement,” he said. “I’m hugely behind this program as I’ve seen first-hand the benefits that cycling can have.” Coca-Cola hoped the partnership between The Happiness Cycle and Bicycle Network would further strengthen its on-

VICTORIA University PhD candidate and community development manager Karen Hart will embark on a four-month journey to the United States as part of a research project. Ms Hart, who is conducting her PhD research through Victoria University’s College of Law and Justice, is the general manager of Youth Junction, the organisation that established the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine. Her research will examine ways community programs delivered through co-located services can prevent incarceration for young adults. Ms Hart will draw on her
years of experiences working for non-profit groups in Australia and the UK, to study the success of North America’s growing number of multi-tenant non-profit centres, similar to the one she manages in Sunshine. Ms Hart said the co-located facilities provided maximum benefits to communities, especially youth, with clients being able to access a range of services within the same time and space. She hoped to build connections while abroad, where she will examine about 100 centres across the US and Canada, and to make a case for building similar centres in Australia.
“Having the opportunity to evaluate and analyse the nature of co-located models, how they were initiated, how they operate and how they are sustained in the US can tell us much about how we can strategically plan to develop them within an Australian context,” she said. “I am hoping to come back with a really robust case that these sort of co-located not for profit centres make sense economically in terms of meeting clients need effectively and efficiently,” she said. Ms Hart has been awarded a Fullbright Scholarship of $40,000 to conduct her research overseas.

From left, Kenny Huynh, Derrick Nguyen, Genevieve Simson (VUSC principal), Martin Dixon MP, Jim Dowie (assistant principal), Jessica Ha, and Jackielyn San Miguel are proud to be involved in the Victorian Young Leaders China tour.
Leading the way THE leaders of tomorrow are up and away and set for an adventure. Four Year 9 students from Victoria University Secondary College have taken off with their assistant principal Jim Dowie to attend a six-week Victorian Young Leaders tour in China. The students were the successful applicants chosen to take part in the six-week study and language tour of China as part of the Victorian Young Leaders Program which has been organised by the State Government. College principal Genevieve Simson said the students were
very excited about the journey. “They are just absolutely rapt and so are their parents they are so excited,” Ms Simson said. The students left St Albans last week to meet students and teachers from seven Victorian schools. They were farewelled by the school community and the Minister and Secretary for Education. Education Minister Martin Dixon also visited the students before the trip to present the students with their Victorian Young Leaders blazers. The tour will include a one-week intensive Chinese language course, a cultural pro-
gram and a month at Gan Quan Foreign Language Middle School in Shanghai to study a range of subjects which will be delivered in Chinese. The students will live with host families during their time in China. Ms Simson said she looked forward to the students sharing their experiences with the school at a special assembly when they returned. “When they come back we’re going to have a special welcome assembly and they will share what they’ve learnt about Asia, particularly about China, and we will build that into our programs throughout the year,” she said.

Fritters with a twist As a teenager growing up in regional Victoria in the eighties, I remember the most sophisticated thing you could do on a Saturday night was go out for dinner at the local Chinese restaurant. My brother and I would spin the Lazy Susan and fiddle with the plastic chopsticks while my parents ordered a selection of sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken and beef in black bean sauce. And we ALWAYS finished off the meal with our all-time favourite – a speciality of Chinese restaurants the world over: Banana fritters and ice cream. This week’s recipe is a delicious twist on the battered variety. Instead of batter, you use spring roll wrappers. They’re so easy to make and you can prepare them ahead of time. I’ve also seen a variation on this recipe, where you sprinkle a few choc chips on the banana pieces before wrapping, instead of brown sugar. Your choice!
BANANA SPRING ROLLS 2 bananas 8 frozen spring roll wrappers, thawed 2 tablespoons brown sugar Vanilla ice cream, to serve Peel the bananas and halve them lengthwise, then cut each piece in half again. This will give you eight pieces. Fill a deep fryer or large “I don’t saucepan 1/3 full with oil and heat like foo arr d over a medium heat to 170 degrees is anged. Repeat with remaining wrappers, banana and brown sugar. Fry banana spring rolls for four minutes or until evenly browned all over. Remove with slotted spoon, drain on paper towels and serve with WESTPOINT ice cream. Good luck stopping at one. Source: That’s Life. Food Bytes proudly sponsored by Westpoint Ford

Hanging out for some special time SPENDING intentional uninterrupted time with a child has infinite rewards. No matter the quantity or quality of the toys they may have, it will never compare to simply being with their parents. Child development experts suggest that these little bits of
special time will add up to an increased trust and emotional/ relational bond that will enable a child to feel secure and less likely to act out negatively for attention. These experiences will also set a foundation for the future relationship with a parent to
thrive even as they grow more and more independent. Strive to have several five to 15 minutes periods of special time rather than engaging for one long block of time with toddlers and pre-schoolers. Special time provides children with some structured way
of knowing when their parents are available. It will meet the need they have to feel connected and to have a feeling of security about their place in the family. With sufficient positive interaction, they won’t have to act out negatively in order to get attention. Knowing their parent will spend time with them at planned times throughout the day will encourage better independent play as well.
To get started, plan with the child some things that they would like to do. Give them some choices if they cannot think of anything. Later, remind them about the special time you had together and that another special time is coming. Do not take special time away as punishment for behaviour earlier in the day. Being able to count on special time with a parent provides them with support and a sense
of unconditional love and connection. Great ideas of things to do with a child could include going to the library - stay for story time - baking something, constructing something with blocks or Lego, drawing or colouring together. Another great idea is to host a play date with their favourite friend, dress up together, swimming indoor or outdoor, have a picnic outside or even on the living room floor or visit a museum or zoo.

beyond the three-point line with Keilor hitting three of its 18 attempts throughout the match. By contrast the Supercats shot at 35 per cent from the field and 30 per cent from the three-point line. The improved accuracy allowed Geelong to control the match, with a four-point quarter-time lead growing to 17 by the final whistle. The 69-52 loss is Keilor’s first
for the year in the Division One competition. In what was a tough day at the office, Nala Tubb worked hard for the Thunder, putting up 12 points and three rebounds. She was well supported by Jayne-Maree Sant who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Supercats enjoyed an even performance across the board with
Kylie Morrissy (14 points) supported by six of her team-mates who had five points or more. Sunday’s result sees Keilor drop to sixth spot on the Division One ladder with a 2-1 win/loss record for the season. When round four gets underway this weekend, the Thunder will meet Western Suburbs rivals Werribee at the Keilor Basketball Stadium.

KEILOR Thunder recovered from a slow start to secure an important win against the Pakenham Warriors in Division Two action of the men’s Big V basketball on Sunday. Despite being played at the Keilor Basketball Stadium, the Thunder looked out of sorts during the first quarter, shooting a poor 14.3 per cent from field goal range. Even though they put up six
more shots than the Warriors, Keilor went into the first break four points behind. It wasn’t until the third term, with the scores at 23-25, that the Thunder shook off its shooting blues and began to make the most of its chances. Keilor posted a whopping 26 points in the third quarter to blow Pakenham away. A team which couldn’t hit the scoreboard earlier was suddenly
struggling to miss as the Thunder went 11/20 from the field and 2/5 from beyond the three-point line. The dominant passage was enough to help Keilor to a 12 point win, 61-49. The weekend’s victory maintains Keilor’s perfect start to the Big V season with the Thunder sitting on top of the ladder with a 3-0 record. Highlighting the club’s dominance on defence, Keilor has con-
ceded the least points of any team in its division. When round four of the competition gets underway this weekend, the Thunder will be forced to undertake double duty. On Saturday night Keilor will host the Shepparton Gators while on Sunday the team will travel to Oakleigh. Keilor’s two opponents are currently in fourth and eighth on ladder respectively.

Late burst downs Jets By ADEM SARICAOGLU A SEVEN-GOAL burst was the difference between the Western Jets and the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup on Sunday. The Jets kept up with Sandringham for threeand-a-half quarters at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, but the Dragons managed to kick clear late in the piece to come away with a solid 46-point win. A low-scoring first half had Sandringham in front by a kick at the main break and as the game broke open in the third stanza, it was the Dragons who managed to convert on the scoreboard. By three-quarter time the margin was out to 22 but the Jets clawed their way back to peg it down to single figures in the final term. However, the Dragons’ seven goals to the Jets’ three sealed the result, handing the latter its second loss in as many games. Jets coach Torin Baker said he was pleased to see his side improve its attack on the footy after going down to the Cannons in round one - but will be hoping his forward line can make more of its opportunities count in coming weeks. Brenton Payne and Jayden Laverde each combined for four of the Jets’ eight goals on the day (two goals each). Billy Myers, Hayden Bray, Liam Duggan and Brandon Coletta each kicked a goal of their own. Draft prospects Corey Ellis, Dillon Viojo and Connor Menadue were among the Jets’ best on the day, while defender Harley ArmstrongWeston also drew praise from his coach for a solid display down back. The Jets will have a chance to rectify their 0-2 start this Sunday away to the Oakleigh Chargers before hosting the Northern Territory at Williamstown’s Burbank’s Oval in round four. The Jets sit 12th on the table and join the Gippsland Power, Bendigo Pioneers, North Ballarat Rebels and Eastern Ranges as the TAC Cup’s remaining winless clubs.

The top Dogs By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater saved its best for last in the Victorian Premier Cricket final. The Bulldogs dominated Essendon for two and a half days before putting the Bombers out of their misery before lunch on Sunday. In arguably its strongest showing of the season, Footscray won by a staggering 359 runs, capping off a truly amazing season. Almost everything went according to plan for the Bulldogs after they won the toss and batted first on day one. Despite the early wicket of Anthony Barton, the Footscray batting line-up always looked in control with some big scores up for grabs. Travis Dean showed why he is
going to be pushing for selection in the Victorian state team in years to come, blasting a brilliant 138. Dean’s knock came off 247 balls and included 18 boundaries. He also combined for a 158 run stand with wicket-keeper Dylan Kight who made 59. In any other match, 138 would normally be enough to secure man of the match honours. However, they were saved for middle order batsman Shanuka Dissanayaka, who was able to take Footscray from a strong position to an unbeatable one. Dissanayaka hit an incredible 175 not out, sending the bowling attack to all parts of the Junction Oval. His innings came off 258 balls
and included 23 boundaries. Everything was going right for Footscray with lower order batsmen Guy Walker (37), Hamish WinterIrving (43) and Jake Haberfield (24) adding to the total. Footscray captain Dean Russ eventually declared his side’s innings with the score at 8/526 after 157 overs. An impossible chase on paper was made even harder by a rampaging Haberfield who took the new ball. The gun quick dismissed Aaron Shellie just four balls into the innings. John Hastings then got in on the act, removing Ben MacRae for six. With Essendon at 2/14 there was
more pain on the way as Haberfield returned to knock over Solomon Mire for just one. Aaron Ayre and Shane McNamara followed soon after and with the score at 5/55, any hope of an unlikely victory was dashed. Footscray went on to claim the final wicket with the score at 167 off 43.1 overs. Haberfield was again the star with the ball, taking 6/58. The remaining wickets were shared by Hastings, Winter-Irving and Michael Kelly. For Essendon, Clinton McKay top scored for the innings with 35. The flag is Footscray’s second in the club’s history, the first since the 1979/80 season.

League’s season of change starts By LIAM TWOMEY THE 2014 Western Region Football League season is shaping up as one of the most interesting in the league’s history. As well as the battle for top honours in Division One, there are a number of sub-plots set to play out throughout the season. Across Divisions One and Two, 17 new coaches will take the reins in round one. After round 13, the bottom six teams in Division Two will make up the newly created Division Three. For the second successive year, the WRFL will also have a brand new club with the Tarneit Titans making their debut. However, league CEO Bob Tregear isn’t taking his eyes off the future. After a lot of hard work, he and his board have got the league going upwards at a rate of knots and they are keen to continue the trend. One of their key goals during the next few years is to continue expanding the league with Tregear nominating a number of possible locations for new clubs. “It (the formation of new clubs) will happen in the new development areas,” Tregear said. “In Wyndham it will be places like Williams Landing and Truganina where there are new developments. We are also looking further north and, as the Melton corridor develops south, we will also be looking to develop clubs there.”
However, the league is making sure it isn’t focusing on expansion to the detriment of its current clubs. Tregear added that finding a way to help struggling clubs is a key priority. “We are talking to AFL Victoria about how to do that at the moment,” Tregear said. “It is really a matter of having enough financial resources to do that. Some of those clubs really need some on-the-spot help. “It is going to take time and money to do that but we need to find a way to achieve that and raise the funds to do it. “We are very confident that we will keep all of the clubs we have got and we will be able to develop some new ones as well.” Building on the expanding senior competition, the WRFL is also enjoying healthy growth in the juniors. The league is expecting at least six new junior teams to compete in the competition this season. Its only area of concern is the under-18 grade, which had just 14 teams last year. “The under-18s will be the challenge,” Tregear said. “We were down to 14 teams last year and we are hoping for 16 or 17 this year. We really need to have about 24. “It took a dive last year so it is up one year down the next. It’s not enough to say it is a trend. I think it creates a challenge for everybody.”

West on the rise in clash of leagues By LIAM TWOMEY
Jason Cloke was among the best players for the WRFL interleague side. Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT 117655
THE Western Region Football League celebrated its return to interleague football with an impressive 37-point win on Saturday. Taking on the Southern Football League at Visy Park, the WRFL side looked in complete control throughout the contest and led at every change. Matthew Dean, Kwame McHarg and captain Jason Cloke were all among the best players, while Lee Spiteri was presented with the medal for the most valuable player. WRFL coach Brett Jacobs was rapt with his side’s performance. “We weren’t expecting a sixgoal win, that’s for sure,” he said. “At the start we said 10 to 12 goals would probably win it so we thought it would be a low scoring game. We put a big emphasis on pressure. Being a preseason format we were sure that would be the best way to go and ... it worked for us.” Despite still coaching his own team (Sunshine), Jacobs said he and his coaching group found time to scout the SFL before the match. “We did a bit of work on the footy forums, Big Footy and what not,” he said.
“We did as much research as we could and looked at club websites and all that sort of stuff. We got some valuable information. I shouted one of my old mates who played in the league a lunch earlier this week and got a bit of juice out of him so it was all beneficial.” After starting the interleague format ranked number five, the WRFL now jumps to number four and will take on the Eastern Football League next season. The winner of that match will earn the right to play for the number one ranking the following year. “We were very happy with the process,” Jacobs said. “The majority of the players in the league made themselves available. We had a good squad to choose from. We had some great support. Steve Thom has been awesome through the whole process. Tymmsy (assistant coach Aaron Tymms) and Freez (assistant coach Aaron Freeland) have been terrific for me. “I think you will find a lot more players will put their hand up to participate next year. We hope it stays on for a few more years. I am a big fan of it and think it is fantastic.”

All pain, no gain By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE mood inside the Essendon District Football League’s dressing room within the old bowels of Visy Park said it all on Saturday afternoon. The league was confident it had enough quality to get the job done against the Northern Football League in the second of three interleague contests on the day, but in the end was left ruing what might have been. The NFL looked a sharper, more competitive unit from start to finish in what was at times a spiteful battle - leaving the EDFL with little choice but to chase the game for its entirety. A clear NFL dominance through the midfield and an outside game lacking any kind of flow for the EDFL proved the difference in the end, with the NFL finishing up a 37-point winner to advance to the tier one game next year. EDFL coach Denis Bicer told media afterward of the post-match disappointment felt by his group. “Having a chat to the players and seeing their faces - they didn’t like what happened to them today,” Bicer said. “There’s a feeling that they want to put on a better show for themselves personally and for the league as well.” Bicer said it was tough to pinpoint any aspects of the game where he felt the EDFL got on top of the northerners.
“We were soundly beaten in all three areas of the game,” he said. “We couldn’t get our hands on the ball early, we were out-muscled at the contest (and) probably most disappointingly we weren’t able to spread and use the ball on the outside. “Our back six fought hard all day (and what) we were hoping to stand for as a team we weren’t able to do, and that’s be strong in the clinches. “We were forced to defend a lot because they got their hands on the ball and we were using a lot of our tickets doing that.” The NFL’s strong pressure throughout the day forced the EDFL into silly turnovers, giving key forward pillars Patrick Rose and Dean Galea little chance of attacking the scoreboard. “We knew that it was the trademark to their game and to their league,” Bicer said. “They’re a really strong, bigbodied competition. We thought we had enough big-bodied mids in there to be able to compete and we definitely thought we had enough of the outside runners to be able to provide spread. “But look, we were well and truly beaten by a better team and what it does is it gives us an opportunity to reflect as a league and learn and grow and hopefully come back in a better position next year.”
Avondale Heights duo Dean Galea (pictured) and Patrick Rose each kicked two goals for the EDFL on Saturday. 117656 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT
Heights of success after 23 years Falcons tighten grip on top spot – undefeated
By ADEM SARICAOGLU SUNSHINE Heights’ grand final success in Turf Cricket’s West B1 grand final was 23 years in the making. Coming into its 60-year anniversary next summer, Heights claimed its third senior turf premiership with a stirring six-wicket win over Sunshine United the club’s first flag since the summer of 1990/91. Coach Matthew Shawcross has taken great pride in the fact that the club did not have to break the bank to climb its way to the peak after what has been a lean and difficult two decades between premierships. “We’ve been a club that’s always tried to not only play good cricket, but be a good community club and ensuring that we were always able to find that balance,” Shawcross said. “It’s taken a while to get the team to where we’ve got to now, but we didn’t want to become a local club that came out and paid a whole lot to our players. “We wanted to develop from within. We had six home-grown players play in the premiership and they were all guys that have played with the club since they were eight years old, and so as a result it is very rewarding for all the hard work that’s gone in and very rewarding for all the volunteers in our club as well.” Former Footscray Edgewater player Tim Mahoney’s 69 in the first innings proved vital in a game dominated by bowlers, while team-mate Dilum Samarasinghe won man-of-the-match honours. Samarasinghe contributed 33 runs to the first innings total of 158 before destroying Sunshine United with the ball in the second, claiming 5/41 in just eight overs.

Sunshine Heights celebrates a wicket during day three of last week’s Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI grand final against Sunshine United. 117242 The number four batsman then carried his bat through to the end of the final run chase, staying alive with 19 runs as Heights collected the required 87 runs in 38 overs. Promotion now awaits Sunshine Heights and Shawcross is confident the club has enough depth in its talent pool to be successful after its second XI also
triumphed in the final game of the summer. “We’ve been working towards promotion for a couple of years now, and I think we’re ready for it,” Shawcross said. “Apart from Akon Mawien who’ll go off to Footscray Edgewater, I think all our guys are committed to playing next year.”
CITY West Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the Victorian Netball League ladder after another crushing win last week. The Falcons smashed the Southern Saints by 19 goals, 53-34. From the word go it was a dominating City West outfit that hit the court as the margin was quickly out to seven by the first break. From there, the Falcons continued to control the game and extended the lead across the next three quarters. Alice Teague-Neeld was incredibly accurate around goals for City West, shooting at 96 per cent throughout the night. Teague-Neeld finished with 20 goals from her 21 attempts while fellow shooters Kathleen Knott and Julia Woolley finished with 23 and 10 goals respectively. In total, City West had 20 more attempts on goal for the match. The result maintains the Falcons’ one game lead over Boroondara Genesis on the VNL ladder. In other results, VU Western Lightning overcame a tough first quarter to get the better of Fed Uni Ballarat Pride by 19 goals, 61-42. Despite being winless and on the bottom of the ladder, the Pride fought hard during the first quarter, keeping the deficit to just two at the break. However, the longer the match went the more VU began to take

After a slow start to the year, VU is now a game clear inside the top four, occupying fourth spot on the ladder. When round eight gets underway this week, the two Western Suburbs clubs will clash at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. The pair last met in round one and on that occasion it was an easy win for the Falcons.

West at its best in interleague
Knights go two up By LIAM TWOMEY THE Melbourne Knights remain undefeated in the National Premier League after a 2-0 win against Pascoe Vale last week. After a scoreless first half, the Knights flicked the switch at Hosken Reserve during the second 45 minutes. Led by Jacob Colosimo, Melbourne put two goals through the Pascoe Vale defence to take the ascendancy. The result maintains both club’s opposite starts to the NPL season. After putting together a strong squad in the off-season, the Knights have a 2-0 win/loss record following
their round one win against Northcote City. For Pascoe Vale, it was soundly beaten 3-0 by Hume City in round one and was also knocked out of the Dockerty Cup. Melbourne will look to maintain its unbeaten start to the season when it takes on Werribee City in round three this Sunday. Elsewhere in the NPL, a lone goal to the Dandenong Thunder saw Green Gully slip to its first loss of the season. With the scores deadlocked at 0-0 at half time, the Thunder was able to find the back of the net through Matthew Millar.
Millar’s strike was also the first goal conceded by Green Gully in the new season after the defence combined for a clean sheet in round one against Werribee City. Meanwhile in NPL1 results, Sunshine George Cross got the better of Avondale Heights. In what was a tight and hotly contested clash at Chaplin Reserve, Bozidar Lojanica opened the scoring for George Cross in the first half after he was able to convert a penalty in the 38th minute. Despite both teams having their chances, neither was able to add to the tally as Sunshine held on for the all important win.
The result leaves Sunshine undefeated and in second spot on the NPL1 ladder. The only other unbeaten teams are Box Hill United and FC Bulleen Lions. Brimbank’s other NPL1 club, St Albans Saints are one spot further back in fifth place. The Saints won their opening round of the season but went down to Bulleen 2-1 on Sunday. When round three begins this week, Sunshine will take on Whittlesea while St Albans will meet Kingston City.

THIS weekend sees the start of the WRFL season with St Albans hosting Deer Park in the season opener on Friday night under lights at Kings Park Reserve. At the WRFL season launch I was MC and I was taken by the onstage speech of Deer Park president Mark McGoldrick. He spoke of the club’s commitment to juniors and the community but then said when it comes to senior footy that it’s “business - it is about winning flags”. That is the first time I have heard that from Mark, and I have no problem with that, I am just glad that he has put it out there in those terms. I have been receiving emails from a lot of people in regards to my comments on money in local football. I want to finish this debate by saying the following - I don’t care what any club pays their players, local footy has changed, I don’t like the influence of money, but I understand it is a reality. My concern is that clubs forget their juniors in the pursuit of a flag and if that happens, then we all lose. Happy to hear your thoughts. I AM disgusted that two cricket wickets were doctored in the finals this year. The West Newport one really riles me, and the Werribee CC one is just good enough. Clearly the people involved in both cases are a vigilante group, not club people, who have decided to fix the result of a game. That is pathetic. Have I played with blokes who might be capable of this kind of action? I don’t think so. I played in both winning and losing grand finals and I have both happy and sad memories of both, and I cherish both. That is sport. The boofheads involved in both of these incidents just don’t get it and we all need to get these people out of our lives. I hope we track them down and kick them out of our clubs and competitions. YOU can hear the coverage of the WRFL this Saturday on 88.9 WYN FM from 1.30pm from Merv Hughes Oval with the Match of the Day between Parkside and Manor Lakes. Steve Thom and I are in our 12th year and we are both as keen as day one. We have a new team working with us this year who we hope will kick the same goals as before. GREAT to see the WRFL interleague side victorious over the Southern Football League last Saturday at Princess Park. It is over a decade since the last WRFL senior interleague and I hope our clubs have grown up enough to accept the concept into the future. I know club success is important, but if we all believe that our competition is getting better (and it is) let’s continue to embrace this pre-season championship, and get the WRFL up the ladder of suburban comps. Well done to Brett Jacobs and his coaching staff, the players and everyone involved on the day and in the lead-up. WRFL football operations manager David Newton deserves special mention for his contribution, as does Steve Thom the chairman of selectors. The players enjoyed the experience and deserve full recognition as they did it for the love of the jumper and nothing else. Altona’s Lee Spiteri was awarded the medal for best on ground. Well done to all who made our competition win and look good. Isn’t it nice to have a positive outcome? Let’s get the seniors involved in the junior interleague now to cement the connection for years to come. I want the WRFL juniors to look up to the Tim Jenkins, Brad Juliers and Lee Spiteris of the world in the future. They deserve that, and so does our competition.
