HOBSONS Bay police are urging motorists to lock up their cars and keep valuables out of sight particularly in and around Laverton railway station. The warning comes after a recent spate of thefts from motor vehicles throughout the municipality. Altona North Acting Detective Sergeant Glyn Woolley said the congested railway station was the area’s worst theft hotspot and he cautioned motorists to park their cars in the car park where CCTV cameras could capture images of
would-be thieves. Acting Det Sgt Woolley said cars parked on Railway Ave and Maher Rd were at a higher risk of being broken into as cameras were not located in those areas. “Our biggest problem is people leaving valuables in the car,” he told Star. “The message is don’t leave anything in the car…if they see a wallet or a laptop they will smash a window and just walk away.” He said many of the thefts were opportunistic and not well planned out, so car owners should take as many precau-

Cuts hit schools By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO ALTONA MP Jill Hennessy claims the State Government has walked away from bullying programs in Victorian schools with no funding allocated this year. Ms Hennessy said the Napthine Government has failed to continue funding important anti-bullying programs that could have made a real difference in the Altona District. Funding cuts include the
cyber-safety eSmart program that had been initiated in Victorian schools by the previous government. Delivered by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation with funding from Labor, eSmart helped schools combat cyberbullying and promoted online safety for students. “The funding for schools to participate in this program dried up in 2013 and the Napthine Government appears not to care,” Ms Hennessy said.
Ms Hennessy said the small grants program to assist schools to reduce bullying has now wound up with no new funding this year. The last round of Bully Stoppers grants of up to $10,000 per school closed in the middle of 2013. “Combined with the overall cuts to education, schools will find it very difficult to build safer, more inclusive schools where the incidence of bullying is reduced.”

WESTERN Suburbs residents are being urged to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they change their clocks for daylight savings this Sunday. As the clocks go back an hour on Sunday, Emily Martignago from the Werribee Fire Brigade said it was important for people to remember that their smoke alarms were an even more important aspect of everyday life. “If you do have a smoke
alarm it gives you an advantage in case there ever is a fire, but only if it’s working,” Ms Martignago said. “People are pretty much unable to smell smoke when they are asleep so the chances of waking up without a smoke alarm are much lower.” Ms Martignago, who has been a volunteer firefighter for two years, recently received her qualifications that will allow her to enter burning buildings. She balances her duties as a volunteer firefighter with her university studies and the
21-year-old said she enjoyed giving back to the community. “Basically between everything else I do I found I had a bit of spare time so I decided I should volunteer,” she said. “I love the sense of family and community that it gives me and the sense of belonging. No matter how old you are or what your background is, everyone is just equal.” Daylight savings will end on Sunday 6 April with clocks going back one hour.

Hunt on the horizon By YASEMIN TALAT POLICE have flooded freeways across Melbourne as part of an ongoing operation to reduce dangerous driving in the lead up to Easter. Operation Horizon kicked off last week with police scanning roads during peak hour times to ensure safety for all commuters. Roads to be targeted include the Western Ring Rd, Calder Freeway, Princes Freeway, Tullamarine Freeway, Hume Freeway, EastLink, Monash Freeway, Eastern Freeway and the Geelong Ring Rd. “During Operation Horizon, people can expect to see a strong
police presence on our roads,” said Acting Superintendent David Griffin. Acting Superintendent Griffin said the heavy volumes of traffic on major arterial roads, combined with impatience, sometimes led to drivers taking unnecessary and unacceptable risks. “During the peak hour rush, people are often in a hurry, creating unnecessary stress and a sense of panic that causes errors in judgement,” he said. “We’ve had an horrendous start to the year and the last thing we need is more tragedy on our roads,
particularly leading into the Easter and Anzac Day periods, which are critical periods for the community in terms of road trauma risk,” he said. Acting Superintendent Griffin said peak hours were high risk periods when many crashes occurred and he warned motorists to keep patient on the roads. “People who have not planned their journey properly, or who are running late for work, can become impatient and are more inclined to take shortcuts or engage in risky behaviour to try to make it to their destination on time,” he said.
“Tailgating and using technology while driving are also common offences we see during these times,” he said. “We are asking people to take a deep breath, slow down and ensure they arrive at their destination safely. “Running late for work or being in a hurry to get home is no excuse for doing the wrong thing.” At the time of publication the road toll was 65, higher than the road toll from this time last year, which was 59. Operation Horizon will run until 11 April.
Clubs gain a healthy boost By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO SPORTS and active recreation clubs across Altona District will benefit from funding as part of VicHealth’s $1.8 million Active Club Grants program. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the grants, of up to $3000 each, aim to increase physical activity by making it easier for clubs to reach out to new participants and fund items or equipment that help them to improve safety. “In Victoria, half of all adults do not get enough exercise. As well as the physical benefits, research also shows that sport builds community pride and loyalty and offers people the chance to get involved, providing them with a positive sense of self-worth,” Ms Hennessy said. “Regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life.”

New police uniform hits the street beat POLICE in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham are sporting a new look this week. Officers stepped out in the new look dark blue uniform on Monday, which includes long sleeve shirts for all police, shirt pockets for females and tactical trousers, giving police the option between tactical and office pants. There is also summer and win-
ter undergarment to wear under the Integrated Operational Equipment Vests. The new attire was unveiled in December 2012, and Chief Commissioner Ken Lay and other members of force command started to wear the uniform in June last year, marking the first significant change in Victoria Police’s uniform for more than 30 years. The new uniform will be rolled
out progressively across the state until May. Acting Superintendent Geoff Kedge said local police were pleased to receive the new look uniforms. “There were about 80 different ways to wear the uniform, so this change will ensure a more streamlined look for Victoria Police,” he said. “This uniform is fresh and modern and will be easily recognisable
on the streets of Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham. “While our uniform may have changed, our commitment to keeping the community safe remains.” Victoria Police and Rotary have teamed up to recycle around 150,000 old uniform garments, which will be collected and de-badged before being donated. Anyone interested in volunteering to help should contact their local Rotary club.

HOBSONS Bay City Council has welcomed the State Government’s commitment to cut zone two fares on the public transport network. The announcement made last week means commuters will pay lower fares and parking congestion at Laverton railway station will ease. Mayor Sandra Wilson said the initiative to cap maximum daily fares at the zone one rate from 1 January 2015 would benefit transport users across the municipality as parking congestion at Laverton had reached “unsustainable levels”. “For some time now, we have been advocating for this change to the fare structure, along with calling for improved rail services and better public transport for Hobsons Bay,” Cr Wilson said. “Any changes that encourage more people, especially those in the outer suburbs, to use public transport are welcome.” Cr Wilson said she hoped a number of other issues would also be addressed alongside the rezoning. “At last week’s Altona Loop forum, we were told that on the early completion of the Regional Rail Link, the 20-minute through service on the Altona Loop will be restored. “The community is seeking a guarantee this will happen sooner rather than later.” She said the council would be seeking a meeting with Public Transport Victoria to discuss the issue and was keen to encourage early consultation on the new timetabling of a restored service.

Council listens on library By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO SAVE Newport Library campaigners might soon breathe a sigh of relief after a meeting with mayor Sandra Wilson revealed Hobsons Bay City Council is willing to take a flexible approach when listening to the concerns of its residents. The positive response comes after last week’s council meeting where library crusader Sarah Vincent questioned the council’s timing and length of a planned sub-committee meeting, presently scheduled to be held during the school holidays. Frustration from library users has been gaining momentum after a meeting in February revealed the proposed new library precinct that would replace the existing library would not contain books.
Since then, the council has shelved plans to replace physical books with e-books after facing the wrath of the Save Newport Library group, who now have over 400 likes on their Facebook page. The multimillion-dollar project, called “The Newport Youth Seniors Project”, will include a library, youth service room, a music room or recording studio, a maternity room and more. Ms Vincent told Star many residents believe they have been neglected by the council. “What we feel is happening is that we have been shut out of the process,” Ms Vincent said. “The best outcome for everyone is that we are let into the decisionmaking process.” Ms Vincent, who worked at the
library over a decade ago, said the group was calling for a decent open space that would include books, newspapers, DVDs, computers, fax and photocopying facilities and a quiet space. “We don’t expect a library like the Williamstown Library…but already the hours have been reduced and we feel they are taking away an inadequate service and giving back an even more inadequate service. “We’re hoping the council makes a real commitment to the community.” Last Thursday, Ms Vincent posted a message from Cr Wilson, pledging the council’s dedication to providing a fair and equitable outcome for Newport residents. “A definitive outcome is that there will be flexibility in the sub-
committee meeting dates so that members do not feel constrained over Easter and the school holidays,” Cr Wilson wrote. “After the 2 April information session, and when members of the sub-committee have been appointed, meeting dates can be agreed by all involved in the process. “It will not be limited to a 20-day consultation. “Council’s intention has always been to have a genuine and open community consultation process about the new Newport Library. Sadly, the perception has been otherwise.” Residents can attend an information session on the future of the library tomorrow night at Newport Seniors Centre, Paine Reserve, Mason St, Newport from 6pm.

AN ALTONA Meadows resident is making a name for herself for all the right reasons. Lauren Cornall, 26, was recently named one of three finalists in the Victoria Young Achiever Award BASF Science and Technology category. The Victoria University student is completing her PhD in biomedical sciences with her research focusing on new pharmaceutical targets for treating obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Nominated for her unprecedented research in this field, Lauren told Star she hopes her

studies one day benefit the wider community by reducing the risk of heart disease. “We know obesity and diabetes reduce the ability of the heart and skeletal muscle to make energy from the foods we eat, so we are looking at ways of turning receptors on or off in these muscles to restore this vital function,” she said. A rising star in cardiovascular research, Lauren is juggling her work and voluntary work at VU while completing her thesis, which is due in September. “I have to admit, I’m a bit of a nerd... I really enjoy studying even though at times it can become overwhelming.
“But that is all part of the challenge.” And for the small-town country girl, being recognised for doing something she loves is flattering. “This is such a wonderful opportunity and I’m so thankful to all those who have supported me through my work. “I wouldn’t be where I am without their help, so I’m hoping that my work will give back to the community.” Lauren is in the running to win a $2000 prize grant and a trophy. Winners will be announced at a presentation dinner on Friday 9 May.

Fritters with a twist As a teenager growing up in regional Victoria in the eighties, I remember the most sophisticated thing you could do on a Saturday night was go out for dinner at the local Chinese restaurant. My brother and I would spin the Lazy Susan and fiddle with the plastic chopsticks while my parents ordered a selection of sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken and beef in black bean sauce. And we ALWAYS finished off the meal with our all-time favourite – a speciality of Chinese restaurants the world over: Banana fritters and ice cream. This week’s recipe is a delicious twist on the battered variety. Instead of batter, you use spring roll wrappers. They’re so easy to make and you can prepare them ahead of time. I’ve also seen a variation on this recipe, where you sprinkle a few choc chips on the banana pieces before wrapping, instead of brown sugar. Your choice!
BANANA SPRING ROLLS 2 bananas 8 frozen spring roll wrappers, thawed 2 tablespoons brown sugar Vanilla ice cream, to serve Peel the bananas and halve them lengthwise, then cut each piece in half again. AN ICONIC Newport hotspot will this weekend become home to a fresh, fast and vibrant farmers’ market. The Substation has been hosting the ever-popular artists’ markets for the past three years and will now venture into new territory by offering another shopping destination which is sure to become a favourite among locals. It is hoped the newly launched farmers’ market will transform the building’s back carpark into a plethora of fresh,
organic fruit and vegetables plus delicious small goods produce. The market will include growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables including organics and heirloom varieties with specialties in the summer markets such as strawberries, blueberries, nectarines and peaches. Co-ordinator Marisa Fiume said a market is a great way to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon. “The Substation is the perfect setting for a market. “We are excited about combining the two and introducing new projects within it for
2014,” Ms Fiume said. Along with the freshest fruit and vegetables, shoppers will still be able to get their hands on some of the finest fashion, jewellery, ceramics, art and design made from Hobson Bay artists. The Substation markets are on the first Sunday of every month and there will be an additional farmers’ market on every third Sunday of the month. The farmers’ market will be held this Sunday from 9am to 1pm. The artists’ market will be held from 10am to 3pm.

Hanging out for some special time SPENDING intentional uninterrupted time with a child has infinite rewards. No matter the quantity or quality of the toys they may have, it will never compare to simply being with their parents. Child development experts suggest that these little bits of special time will add up to an increased trust and emotional/ relational bond that will enable a child to feel secure and less likely to act out negatively
for attention. These experiences will also set a foundation for the future relationship with a parent to thrive even as they grow more and more independent. Strive to have several five to 15 minutes periods of special time rather than engaging for one long block of time with toddlers and pre-schoolers. Special time provides children with some structured way of knowing when their parents are available.
It will meet the need they have to feel connected and to have a feeling of security about their place in the family. With sufficient positive interaction, they won’t have to act out negatively in order to get attention. Knowing their parent will spend time with them at planned times throughout the day will encourage better independent play as well. To get started, plan with
the child some things that they would like to do. Give them some choices if they cannot think of anything. Later, remind them about the special time you had together and that another special time is coming. Do not take special time away as punishment for
behaviour earlier in the day. Being able to count on special time with a parent provides them with support and a sense of unconditional love and connection. Great ideas of things to do with a child could include going to the library - stay for story time - baking something,
constructing something with blocks or Lego, drawing or colouring together. Another great idea is to host a play date with their favourite friend, dress up together, swimming indoor or outdoor, have a picnic outside or even on the living room floor or visit a museum or zoo.

ONE of the medical conditions we see on a daily basis at our vet clinic is a dog with an ear problem. The pet usually presents with a sore or smelly ear which is caused by an infection. Occasionally this may progress to a large swollen ear flap known as an aural haematoma. Ear infections are caused by organisms such as ear mites, bacteria or yeast growing in the ear or by a foreign object such as a grass seed lodged down the ear canal. Your vet will need to exam-
ine down the ear canal with an otoscope and take samples to look at under a microscope to make a diagnosis. Prescription ear drops and sometimes oral medications may be needed to properly clear an infection. Ear cleaners which remove wax and dirt build up may be used to prevent the ear infection from returning in the future. Underlying skin allergies may be the cause of an ear infection returning as could incomplete medical treatment. An aural haematoma is a big
bruise between the cartilage and skin of the ear flap. It is often associated with vigorous head shaking, possibly due to an ear infection, trauma or allergies. Surgery under anaesthesia to repair the ear is usually required as well as medications to prevent pain and infection. Untreated haematomas may lead to a deformed or cauliflower-type appearance to the ear. Recurring ear disease can be frustrating for pets, owners and their vets so a thorough investigation and course of treatment is essential.

The Growth Areas Authority (now known as the Metropolitan Planning Authority, MPA), in consultation with the Wyndham City Council, Government agencies and service authorities has prepared a draft Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) for development of a new precinct known as Tarneit North. The plan applies to the area bounded by Boundary Road to the north, Derrimut Road to the east, Leakes Road to the south and Davis Road to the West. Amendment C188 also includes six concurrent planning permits proposing residential subdivision for approximately 3,000 lots, sets aside land for parks, roads and three future education facilities. Tarneit North PSP envisions the development of a new residential community of about 9,900 new homes, a town centre, schools, community and sports facilities, local parks and new road infrastructure. The PSP, planning permits and associated documents are now available for community consultation. Pending resolution of any matters raised through the consultation, the MPA intends to recommend that the Minister for Planning approve the plans, planning permits and associated documents as planning scheme Amendment C188 to the Wyndham Planning Scheme. Late burst downs Jets By ADEM SARICAOGLU A SEVEN-GOAL burst was the difference between the Western Jets and the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup on Sunday. The Jets kept up with Sandringham for threeand-a-half quarters at Craigieburn’s Highgate Reserve, but the Dragons managed to kick clear late in the piece to come away with a solid 46-point win. A low-scoring first half had Sandringham in front by a kick at the main break and as the game broke open in the third stanza, it was the Dragons who managed to convert on the scoreboard. By three-quarter time the margin was out to 22 but the Jets clawed their way back to peg it down to single figures in the final term. However, the Dragons’ seven goals to the Jets’ three sealed the result, handing the latter its second loss in as many games. Jets coach Torin Baker said he was pleased to see his side improve its attack on the footy after going down to the Cannons in round one - but will be hoping his forward line can make more of its opportunities count in coming weeks. Brenton Payne and Jayden Laverde each combined for four of the Jets’ eight goals on the day (two goals each). Billy Myers, Hayden Bray, Liam Duggan and Brandon Coletta each kicked a goal of their own. Draft prospects Corey Ellis, Dillon Viojo and Connor Menadue were among the Jets’ best on the day, while defender Harley ArmstrongWeston also drew praise from his coach for a solid display down back. The Jets will have a chance to rectify their 0-2 start this Sunday away to the Oakleigh Chargers before hosting the Northern Territory at Williamstown’s Burbank’s Oval in round four. The Jets sit 12th on the table and join the Gippsland Power, Bendigo Pioneers, North Ballarat Rebels and Eastern Ranges as the TAC Cup’s remaining winless clubs.

The top Dogs By LIAM TWOMEY FOOTSCRAY Edgewater saved its best for last in the Victorian Premier Cricket final. The Bulldogs dominated Essendon for two and a half days before putting the Bombers out of their misery before lunch on Sunday. In arguably its strongest showing of the season, Footscray won by a staggering 359 runs, capping off a truly amazing season. Almost everything went according to plan for the Bulldogs after they won the toss and batted first on day one. Despite the early wicket of Anthony Barton, the Footscray batting line-up always looked in control with some big scores up for grabs. Travis Dean showed why he is
going to be pushing for selection in the Victorian state team in years to come, blasting a brilliant 138. Dean’s knock came off 247 balls and included 18 boundaries. He also combined for a 158 run stand with wicket-keeper Dylan Kight who made 59. In any other match, 138 would normally be enough to secure man of the match honours. However, they were saved for middle order batsman Shanuka Dissanayaka, who was able to take Footscray from a strong position to an unbeatable one. Dissanayaka hit an incredible 175 not out, sending the bowling attack to all parts of the Junction Oval. His innings came off 258 balls
and included 23 boundaries. Everything was going right for Footscray with lower order batsmen Guy Walker (37), Hamish WinterIrving (43) and Jake Haberfield (24) adding to the total. Footscray captain Dean Russ eventually declared his side’s innings with the score at 8/526 after 157 overs. An impossible chase on paper was made even harder by a rampaging Haberfield who took the new ball. The gun quick dismissed Aaron Shellie just four balls into the innings. John Hastings then got in on the act, removing Ben MacRae for six. With Essendon at 2/14 there was
more pain on the way as Haberfield returned to knock over Solomon Mire for just one. Aaron Ayre and Shane McNamara followed soon after and with the score at 5/55, any hope of an unlikely victory was dashed. Footscray went on to claim the final wicket with the score at 167 off 43.1 overs. Haberfield was again the star with the ball, taking 6/58. The remaining wickets were shared by Hastings, Winter-Irving and Michael Kelly. For Essendon, Clinton McKay top scored for the innings with 35. The flag is Footscray’s second in the club’s history, the first since the 1979/80 season.

THE 2014 Western Region Football League season is shaping up as one of the most interesting in the league’s history. As well as the battle for top honours in Division One, there are a number of sub-plots set to play out throughout the season. Across Divisions One and Two, 17 new coaches will take the reins in round one. After round 13, the bottom six teams in Division Two will make up the newly created Division Three. For the second successive year, the WRFL will also have a brand new club with the Tarneit Titans making their debut. However, league CEO Bob Tregear isn’t taking his eyes off the future. After a lot of hard work, he and his board have got the league going upwards at a rate of knots and they are keen to continue the trend. One of their key goals during the next few years is to continue expanding the league with Tregear nominating a number of possible locations for new clubs. “It (the formation of new clubs) will happen in the new development areas,” Tregear said. “In Wyndham it will be places like Williams Landing and Truganina where there are new developments. We are also looking further north and, as the Melton corridor develops south, we will also be looking to develop clubs there.” However, the league is making sure it isn’t focusing on expansion to the detriment of its current clubs. Tregear added that finding a way to help struggling clubs is a key priority. “We are talking to AFL Victoria about how to do that at the moment,” Tregear said. “It is really a matter of having

Some of those clubs really need some on-the-spot help. “It is going to take time and money to do that but we need to find a way to achieve that and raise the funds to do it. “We are very confident that we will keep all of the clubs we have got and we will be able to develop
some new ones as well.” Building on the expanding senior competition, the WRFL is also enjoying healthy growth in the juniors. The league is expecting at least six new junior teams to compete in the competition this season. Its only area of concern is the under-18 grade, which had just 14 teams last year.
“The under-18s will be the challenge,” Tregear said. “We were down to 14 teams last year and we are hoping for 16 or 17 this year. We really need to have about 24. “It took a dive last year so it is up one year down the next. It’s not enough to say it is a trend. I think it creates a challenge for everybody.”
West on rise in league clash of champions By LIAM TWOMEY THE Western Region Football League celebrated its return to interleague football with an impressive 37-point win on Saturday. Taking on the Southern Football League at Visy Park, the WRFL side looked in complete control throughout the contest and led at every change. Matthew Dean, Kwame McHarg and captain Jason Cloke were all among the best players, while Lee Spiteri was presented with the medal for the most valuable player. WRFL coach Brett Jacobs was rapt with his side’s performance. “We weren’t expecting a six-goal win, that’s for sure,” he said. “At the start we said 10 to 12 goals would probably win it so we thought it would be a low scoring game. We put a big emphasis on pressure. Being a preseason format we were sure that would be the best way to go and ... it worked for us.” Despite still coaching his own team (Sunshine), Jacobs said he and his coaching group found time to scout the SFL before the match. “We did a bit of work on the footy forums, Big Footy and what not,” he said.
“We did as much research as we could and looked at club websites and all that sort of stuff. We got some valuable information. I shouted one of my old mates who played in the league a lunch earlier this week and got a bit of juice out of him so it was all beneficial.” After starting the interleague format ranked number five, the WRFL now jumps to number four and will take on the Eastern Football League next season. The winner of that match will earn the right to play for the number one ranking the following year. “We were very happy with the process,” Jacobs said. “The majority of the players in the league made themselves available. We had a good squad to choose from. We had some great support. Steve Thom has been awesome through the whole process. Tymmsy (assistant coach Aaron Tymms) and Freez (assistant coach Aaron Freeland) have been terrific for me. “I think you will find a lot more players will put their hand up to participate next year. We hope it stays on for a few more years. I am a big fan of it and think it is fantastic.”

WILLIAMSTOWN’S first hit out as a standalone club didn’t go exactly as planned with the Seagulls going down to the Box Hill Hawks by 13 points. Despite the loss, there were plenty of positive signs for Williamstown which showed why it will again be one of the top sides this season. Taking on the reigning premiers and coming to terms with a huge list turnover throughout the off-season, the Seagulls pushed the Hawks throughout the match. After trailing by 29 points going into the final change, Williamstown charged home to win the last quarter by 16. It wasn’t enough to topple the Hawks though, who held on for the 13.17 (95) to 11.16 (82) win. Adam Marcon was outstanding for Williamstown throughout the match and was named his club’s best player. He was well supported by a pair of first game Seagulls in Scott Clouston and Ryan Ferguson. The Seagulls will look to secure their first win of the new season when they take on the Northern Blues this Saturday.

GREAT to see the WRFL interleague side victorious over the Southern Football League last Saturday at Princess Park. It is over a decade since the last WRFL senior interleague and I hope our clubs have grown up enough to accept the concept into the future. I know club success is important, but if we all believe that our competition is getting better (and it is) let’s continue to embrace this pre-season championship, and get the WRFL up the ladder of suburban comps. Well done to Brett Jacobs and his coaching staff, the players and everyone involved on the day and in the lead-up. WRFL football operations manager David Newton deserves special mention for his contribution, as does Steve Thom the chairman of selectors. The players enjoyed the experience and deserve full recognition as they did it for the love of the jumper and nothing else. Altona’s Lee Spiteri was awarded the medal for best on ground. Well done to all who made our competition win and look good. Isn’t it nice to have a positive outcome? Let’s get the seniors involved in the junior interleague now to cement the connection for years to come. I want the WRFL juniors to look up to the Tim Jenkins, Brad Juliers and Lee Spiteris of the world in the future. They deserve that, and so does our competition. THIS weekend sees the start of the WRFL season with St Albans hosting Deer Park in the season opener on Friday night under lights at Kings Park Reserve. At the WRFL season launch I was MC and I was taken by the onstage speech of Deer Park president Mark McGoldrick. He spoke of the club’s commitment to juniors and the community but then said when it comes to senior footy that it’s “business - it is about winning flags”. That is the first time I have heard that from Mark, and I have no problem with that, I am just glad that
he has put it out there in those terms. I have been receiving emails from a lot of people in regards to my comments on money in local football. I want to finish this debate by saying the following - I don’t care what any club pays their players, local footy has changed, I don’t like the influence of money, but I understand it is a reality. My concern is that clubs forget their juniors in the pursuit of a flag and if that happens, then we all lose. Happy to hear your thoughts. I AM disgusted that two cricket wickets were doctored in the finals this year. The West Newport one really riles me, and the Werribee CC one is just good enough. Clearly the people involved in both cases are a vigilante group, not club people, who have decided to fix the result of a game. That is pathetic. Have I played with blokes who might be capable of this kind of action? I don’t think so. I played in both winning and losing grand finals and I have both happy and sad memories of both, and I cherish both. That is sport. The boofheads involved in both of these incidents just don’t get it and we all need to get these people out of our lives. I hope we track them down and kick them out of our clubs and competitions. Seagulls’ new focus By ADEM SARICAOGLU NEW Altona coach Greg Drake wants his Seagulls to enjoy their Premier League hockey campaign this year. Since coming on board over the summer, Drake has gone about increasing the depth of his squad ahead of this weekend’s season opener against local rival, Footscray. There are no major cuts to speak of from last year’s team but Altona will welcome the returns of Mairaed Crawford and Taia Leenstra, among others, who will all form part of Drake’s new structure for the upcoming season. “(It’s a) completely new structure in terms of on-field and we’re undertaking a really strong structural approach but we’ve also put an emphasis on skill development,” Drake said. “We’ve done some analysis and recognised that there are some deficiencies in players’ skills and we’ve specifically targeted them through the pre-season. “We’ve done skill-specific-based sessions in order to fast-track the development of the group, and the other
thing we’ve done is we’ve expanded the size of our squad,” he said. Drake said he had included a number of young up-and-coming players to try and fast-track their development as well. The Seagulls finished 11th with just three wins last year, and while Drake is keen to see that number grow in the wins column this time around, he said the key for his young group will be to make sure they have some fun in 2014. “First and foremost we want the players to enjoy their year,” he said. “That is absolutely most important and we think if we can make it enjoyable, then that means the development will occur more easily. “We’d certainly like to make sure we have more wins than last year and we think we’re well-placed for that and our squad is certainly stronger. “Our first two teams will definitely be much stronger than last year - how much that relates to how well the rest of the competition has improved is an unknown. But I’m confident that we’ll win more games than we did last year.”

Juniors make a golden assault WILLIAMSTOWN Athletics Club enjoyed a gold rush at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships last month. Held at Sydney’s Olympic Park, Williamstown athletes combined for three gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals to round out a brilliant championships. For Daniela Roman, the championships also provided her with the chance to show the world just how good she is. The gun sprinter was at her brilliant best on her way to a gold medal in the Women’s Under-20 100m hurdles. Roman’s time of 13.66 seconds was also enough to qualify her for the World Junior Championships later this year. The good results didn’t stop there for Roman who also claimed bronze medals in the 100m and 200m events. In other results, regular gold medallist Celeste Mucci added another first place finish to her growing collection after claiming top honours in the Under-16 90m hurdles. She then backed that effort up with a gold medal in the long jump as well as a silver medal in the high jump and a bronze medal in the 100m. Rising star Grace Goldsworthy had the fastest qualifying times going into the finals of the Under-14 200m and the 400m. In both finals Goldsworthy ran close seconds to take home two silver medals at her first Australian Championships. Distance athlete Ryhan Thomas claimed the bronze medal in the Under-16 2000m steeplechase. Thomas had competed earlier in the championships in the 3000m (9m 21.93sec) for eighth place and in the 1500m (4m 18.23sec) for

fying for the final and improved with a personal best time of 51.35sec to cross the line eighth in the final. As a bottom-aged athlete Sean Hardeman threw an 800gram implement 47.94m in the javelin. The effort was a personal best.
CITY West Falcons remain undefeated and on top of the Victorian Netball League ladder after another crushing win last week. The Falcons smashed the Southern Saints by 19 goals, 53-34. From the word go it was a dominating City West outfit that hit the court as the margin was quickly out to seven by the first break. From there, the Falcons continued to control the game and extended the lead across the next three quarters. Alice Teague-Neeld was incredibly accurate around goals
for City West, shooting at 96 per cent throughout the night. Teague-Neeld finished with 20 goals from her 21 attempts while fellow shooters Kathleen Knott and Julia Woolley finished with 23 and 10 goals respectively. In total, City West had 20 more attempts on goal for the match. The result maintains the Falcons’ one game lead over Boroondara Genesis on the VNL ladder. In other results, VU Western Lightning overcame a tough first quarter to get the better of Fed Uni Ballarat Pride by 19 goals, 61-42. Despite being winless and on the bottom of the ladder, the
Pride fought hard during the first quarter, keeping the deficit to just two at the break. However, the longer the match went the more VU began to take control as the margin spiked. Of the Lightning’s 61 goals, Kate Thompson shot 45. After a slow start to the year, VU is now a game clear inside the top four, occupying fourth spot on the ladder. When round eight gets underway this week, the two Western Suburbs clubs will clash at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. The pair last met in round one and on that occasion it was an easy win for the Falcons.

FORTY nippers from Williamstown Surf and Lifesaving Club travelled to Warrnambool last month to participate in the Victorian Junior Lifesaving Championships. The two-day event saw Nippers from Williamstown dominate across both the individual and team events.
