Man lures teen A MAN has tried to abduct a Wodonga teenager who went to his aid. Wodonga Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are investigating a report of an attempted abduction in Wodonga on Monday. Detectives have been told the victim went to the aid of a man who appeared to have stumbled on Lawrence Street, opposite Kelly Park, about 3.40pm. The man asked the teenager for help to his car and when she obliged was forced into the vehicle and physically assaulted. The 15-year-old victim was able to escape the car and run home to raise the alarm. It is believed the offender pulled out into Lawrence Street and then pulled straight back into a parking spot and sat in his car for several minutes before driving away, north, on Melrose Drive. The teen was conveyed to Wodonga Hospital for treatment to her injuries and is in a stable condition. The offender is described as aged in his fifties to sixties, balding with grey hair on the sides
Filly brings home cup THE 2014 Albury Gold Cup has been deemed another “great success” by Albury Racing Club chief executive John Millar. “We thought from a racing perspective, in terms of horses and jockeys, it was as good as we’ve had, so we’re really happy about that,” he said. Headlines across all media beamed with the news of Kathy O’Hara taking out the feature race, being the second female jockey to win the race, and the first in 30 years. “Kathy’s one of the country’s best jockeys,” Mr Millar said. “With the line-up of jockeys and horses we had for the cup, to come out on top is a fantastic effort.” The locals were represented by Albury trainer Brett Cavanough, who had his share of wins, surpassed only by Bede Murray. “Brett Cavanough won three races over the two days, including one of the feature races - the flat knacker,” Mr Millar said. “The stand-out trainer would have been Bede Murray, who’s been coming to the carnival for a number of years. He trained four or five winners for the two days.”

Hay is on the way THE Burrumbuttock to Bourke Hay Run that seized the attention of the country and boosted government drought relief funds is “having another crack” this Friday - and this time it’s even bigger. The concept’s driving force, Burrumbuttock farmer Brendan Farrell, said the second run would deliver 2500 squares and rolls of hay on 52 prime movers with 80 trailers to 196 farmers, bringing
the total hay delivered to 3,400 bales, assisting 297 farmers. “The main reason we’re doing the second run is we have hay left over and I’m not one to have donated hay left at my farm,” Mr Farrell said. After the success of the first run, Bourke mayor Andrew Lewis said the town was eagerly awaiting the second arrival.

program last year, I found it was a good excuse for my son Sanjay and I to spend some quality time together because we’re usually quite busy,” he said. “I hope it improves our companionship and exposes him to different activities that we probably wouldn’t be participating in in day-to-day life. “It’s a long journey to grow up from a boy to a man and I think one of the most important things is to have the right person to look up to. “Society doesn’t really offer too many avenues for men to be able to mix with men only. There’s avenues for women to do so, but probably not so much of that for the men and the boys.” Mr Breheny said the exercise was also beneficial in giving him a special glimpse into the everyday interactions of his son. “One thing I got out of it last year is it was really good for me as a father to be able to see how Sanjay interacts within a group,” he said. “I get to see how he interacts at home of course, but we all know everyone acts differently out in the real world too.”

IN THIS day and age, raising children to be honourable people and upstanding citizens can be a challenge, and good parenting can be a minefield. One of the most important aspects of this quest is found in same-sex role modelling something Trinity College has fully recognised in their annual Boys to Men program. “Parents have often asked me what they can do to help their son to be a better person,” Trinity head of Wodonga campus, Chris O’Loan said. “The magic of growing boys into good men is seen when a key male figure shares an afternoon of organised boys’ own games and fun with each other. “The program invites the boy to choose a trusted male figure that is key to the boy’s life. Together they participate in a series of games and activities that promote integrity, persistence, accountability, resilience, getting along, empathy and respect. “Their mentor is a metaphor for what it is to be a young male in the 21st century.” About 80 junior boys and
their mentors were involved in this year’s program, led by head of the junior school, Steven Armstrong. “It’s significant in the way that it gives dads or mentors some help,” he said. “I’m a dad and to be able to share concerns with other males about how your son is growing and how you talk and react to your son allows men to say ‘we’re in this together.’ “There’s always been a sort of a mothers’ club mentality where mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers pass down lots of skills and help each other. I don’t know if that’s happened too much with males in Australia. “The main aim of the program is to open up dialogue between fathers and sons. If they’re feeling a certain way then they know what to say, rather than just bottling it up.” Local father Travis Breheny took his son Sanjay to the event last Thursday for the second year and says the most valuable aspect for him is the good oldfashioned father-son time doing things they wouldn’t usually do in everyday life. “After going through the

They’re good eggs out there TRINITY Anglican College’s agricultural students are proving they aren’t chickens when it comes to a little competition. In the lead-up to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Steggles has been delivering 12-day-old chicks to more than 75 schools across NSW, including Trinity, as part of the annual Meat Bird Pairs competition. The competition, now in its fourth year, gives students in NSW schools the opportunity to undertake a hands-on farming experience by raising chicks over a six-week period and selecting their two heaviest and healthiest chickens to be judged. Steggles Brand manager Laurel Brown said the top 12 finalist birds would then be on
John Mee about to embark on his journey for better mental health on the Border.
Wheel help By KRYSTEN MANUEL
LOCAL man John Mee is five days into huffing, puffing and wrestling his way to Burleigh Heads, Queensland in a bid to shed some light on suicide and depression. Having witnessed the devastation of both mental illnesses within his family, John is passionate about getting the discussion going and looking into mental health services within the region, having begun the ride and wrestle in Albury on 29 March. “We’ve been affected by suicide and depression on both sides of my family,” he said. “My mother-in-law sadly committed suicide very early in our children’s lives, so it’s very sad to lose their grandmother, and my own mother suffers ex-
tremely badly with depression. “We’re just trying to get out the awareness of it and the effects on what’s left behind. “We want to get it out there to talk about the facilities we have and the lack of staffing as well.” John said the first few days had been “gruelling,” and he was hoping for some more travel companions. “The second day we climbed 1000 metres and the third we climbed 1230 metres - a pretty tough couple of days,” he said. “Brett Hazel helped me for the first couple of days which was fantastic, and from day three on I’m by myself. “I am hoping to get another rider or two along the way to break the trip up. A key contributing factor to the significant disability associated with depression and anxiety is the low levels of help seeking, with only 35 per cent of people with these disorders accessing professional services for their mental health problems. A presentation by Luke Gooding from Kensho will be made tonight to support the ride and increasing local mental health services in the area, starting at 7pm at the Manor House. Piece of cake for CWA ladies By KRYSTEN MANUEL A MULTITUDE of delicious aromas wafted out of the Gerogery Hall last month with the Murray Group CWA Handicraft and Land Cookery Finals in full swing. With around 100 entries, competition was stiff but old-fashioned technique and raw talent was on show at every turn. “It’s a fun day today,” Murray Group CWA president Olivia Hanel said. “We have eight branches; Gerogery is one of those branches and they are hosting today’s land cookery and handicraft competition. “Whoever wins, whether it’s handicraft or cookery, will do the same at state level in Griffith on 19 May.” Two competitors heading off to state, Marie Molkentin for her winning fruitcake and Claire Oliver for her steamed pudding, said although there was no ‘secret’ to their success, the classic CWA recipes they used had got them over the line several times before. “I haven’t really got a secret, I just follow a recipe - an old CWA recipe,” Marie said. “It’s probably about 35 years old. It’s a favourite with the family and I like a dark one.” Judge Helen Robinson said the pair produced a couple of clear winners. “They were easy winners because they were very flavoursome, cut beautifully and just as they should have been,” she said. Despite the CWA’s obvious affiliation with cooking, Olivia assured NewsWeekly it’s not all “tea and scones.” “We do a heck of a lot more than that,” she said. “This is just one aspect of CWA. We donate money to medical causes, we’ve helped out with the Hilltop cancer accommodation, we’ve raised money for doctors in rural areas, we go to the government to change things, we help drought affected areas - last year NSW raised $50,000 for

Marie Molkentin with her winning fruitcake, judge Helen Robinson and Claire Oliver with her winning steamed pudding. them - we’re constantly raising money throughout the year to make communities better for families. “The CWA started in 1922 with Mrs Munroe - we’re 92 years old now! Back then they really wanted to give mothers a place to come into town and change their children. That’s why the baby health centres started. “From then on it went from better to better, trying to improve the conditions out there in the rural sector especially. “We have about 10,000 members in NSW. We’re associated with Women of The World and we have our world president from Dubbo, NSE - Ruth Shanks. “So it really is much more than just tea and scones.”

Expand your mind and horizons WOULD you like to work on Hamilton Island? Or maybe a cruise ship? How about a swanky resort? The Albury Wodonga Community College (AWCC) is offering an exciting course in leisure and health that gives scope to work with people in aged care, those with a disability or even holiday makers. “Under community services we offer certificate four in leisure and health,” AWCC community services and ESOL coordinator Jodie Pilbeam said. “A lot of people don't really understand that it's a diversional therapy and the career pathways it can give them. “It can lead to so many things – working on Hamilton Island, a cruise ship or as simple as working in aged care and providing activity based programs for the clients.” Ms Pilbeam said careers evolving from the course will involve writing programs for clients, with the experience, skills and training needed derived from the AWCC course. “One of the students, Brett Symons, he has a disability – or a non-disability as he would say – but he's an incomplete spinal patient, an incomplete quadriplegic,” Ms Pilbeam said. “So he's able to walk, he doesn't use a wheelchair or aids. He's been doing public speaking so he's doing the leisure and health course to move more into programs.

“He's been a DJ for a lot of his career and he's very keen to get this certificate and move his career forward into diversional therapy.” The course involves placement of 150 hours in a bid to “turn quality students into quality community service workers.” And with quality teaching staff, this aim is already a reality.
“We have a new tutor who has been in the industry for a long time, Leanne Jenvey,” Ms Pilbeam said. “She's an incredibly enthusiastic tutor. You're not just sitting in the classroom and looking at slides, you're out in the community getting involved in community projects.”
A recipe for great success THERE'S nothing quite like a complete cake mix to customer training experience to peak motivation levels, according to Albury Wodonga Community College (AWCC) bakery instructor Rob Currie. Fronting onto South Street, patrons of the AWCC bakery can see the students working hard in the open kitchen/ sales facility as they purchase delicious cakes, pies and more. “We have a fully operating bakery, so we can make most things and sell them to the public,” Mr Currie said. “The students are getting a real life experience of being in the bakery.
“Most places that do training just focus on the hands on work, but we make everything and sell it. “People say they're the best products they've ever tasted, so we take a lot of pride in that.” The baking course is in its third year, though 2014 is the first year students have been able to sell their goods. Mr Currie said the aim of the shop is to increase motivation and pride in the students. “With the background our students have, not being a mainstream school, we have to keep them engaged, which can be a challenge, but when

Another face the Albury Gold Cup smiled upon was that of jockey Kathy O’Hara, who became the second female rider to win the $170,000 feature,
only sharing the title with Lisa Cropp who took out the title 30 years ago. And fashions on the field was yet again highly contested, with Gentleman of The Day going to Grant Leverington, Lady of The Day to Courtney Doyle and Kerry McGlone winning the Millinery Award.

Finance changes holding pattern OLDER Australians have welcomed the government’s move to delay the Future of Financial Advice (FOFA) reform amendments in order to consult with stakeholders. They also now expect to see changes before Minister Mathias Cormann pushes the ‘go button’. National Seniors Australia has led a campaign against the amendments, urging its 200,000 members to register their opposition to the winding back of important consumer protections introduced under FOFA. The FOFA reforms were introduced by the former Labor Government to improve the quality of financial advice and enhance retail investor protection for all Australians following the collapse of companies like Storm Financial. But the rollback of these reforms, which had been proposed by the current Federal Government, would have removed the obligation for financial advisers to act in the best interests of their clients. National Seniors chief executive Michael O’Neill said he

Over 55s ..... Life starts Now! Making the money work CLUB Plus Super is urging Australians to adequately budget for their retirement in light of modelling suggesting the average retiree may be forced to rely on the age pension after only six years of retirement. According to figures published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the average 65-year-old in 2012 is expected to live until they are 85 years old; however their superannuation is only likely to last until they are approximately 71 when taking into account the average superannuation fund balance for this group. “While life expectancy is not a topic most Australians would discuss very often, the growing gap between life expectancy and superannuation savings means that many Australians will be forced to rely on the age pension to fund their retirement,” CEO Paul Cahill said. “Living longer is great news, providing we prepare ourselves financially for a longer retirement.” According to a recent report issued by the United Nations, Australia has one of the highest life expectancy rates (at birth) of any country in the world. Club Plus Super believes that Australians should focus on budgeting for the lifestyle they
Are you prepared for retirement? want to enjoy in retirement and work with their super provider to structure their contributions towards this goal. The fund believes this approach will be more effective in the long run than aiming for an arbitrary figure such as $1 million. “A comfortable retirement can be surprisingly expensive, with a single person needing payments of around $41,830 annually for upwards of 20 years if they retire at 65 years of age
- that is $20,325 more per year than the age pension currently provides,” Mr Cahill said. “By making small additional contributions to super now, Australians can make a huge difference to their quality of life during retirement.” Assuming the average super fund balance for females is $112,632 and for males is $198,325 at the age of retirement (Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) 2011, Developments in
the level and distribution of retirement savings) their superannuation may only last four and eight years respectively. This assumes the average retiree spends $41,830 annually to maintain a comfortable level of retirement as per ASFA’s retirement standards and is able to receive the maximum pension payments. Figures used are an approximation and circumstances vary for each individual depending on a variety of factors.
National Seniors join research PER Capita is delighted to announce the peak membership body National Seniors has joined Per Capita’s Advisory Panel on the Blueprint for an Ageing Australia. National Seniors and its highly regarded Productive Ageing Centre will provide essential research and analysis for the panel. The panel is particularly pleased to have the opportunity to consult with National Seniors’ 200,000 members about the issues it covers during its consultation phase in the first half of 2014. “The Blueprint for Ageing plans to chart a course for Australia which will turn the ageing tsunami into an economic and social asset,” panel chairman Everald Compton AM said. “To achieve this we need a quality team. National Seniors has a background over four decades of advocating for sound government policies for seniors. Their presence on the panel greatly expands its ability to produce a first-class blueprint.” National Seniors has appointed its CEO, Michael
O’Neill as its representative on the panel, which met for the first time in Sydney on 27 February 2014. “We’re pleased to be involved in a project that shifts ageing away from the rhetoric of calamity towards something practical and constructive,” Mr O’Neill said. The panel will conduct a series of community consultations around the country on the key research themes of the Blueprint. Its first consultation will take place in Melbourne on 8 April, focusing on the business opportunities associated with an ageing Australia. Per Capita looks forward to working with all members of the panel to produce policy recommendations which enable Australia to capitalise on its ageing demographic. The panel is seeking funds to reach its target budget. Contributions to its crowd funding campaign to fund work on the Blueprint can be made via the Blueprint’s campaign site on Pozible (http://www.pozible.com/project/177631)

Over 55’s ..... Life starts Now! Women miss out on a super life at older ages - for example the percentage of men aged 65-plus who work is twice that of women of the same age.” The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia reported that in 2011, 31.6 per cent of males and 38.5 per cent of women reported they had no superannuation. This was most likely for older women; with 60 per cent of women aged 65 to 69 reporting nil superannuation.
By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) has begun consultation with veterans, war widows and widowers, their families, the Community and Public Sector Union and DVA staff about the future of some shopfront services in Victoria and New South Wales. “The government is committed to a stand-alone Department of Veterans’ Affairs which delivers efficient services to veterans right across Australia,” Senator Mi-
chael Ronaldson said. “As the veteran community changes, so too must the department adapt and respond to changing circumstances. “More and more of our veterans, war widows and widow/ers and their families are choosing the telephone or the internet to make contact with DVA. Visits to our shopfronts are declining and are down 28 per cent since 2009.” The respective deputy commissioners of DVA in Victoria and New South Wales
will facilitate the consultation, which commenced in March, regarding the provision of DVA Veterans’ Access Network (VAN) services in six regions. “This consultation process will guide DVA in deciding the future provision of current services,” Senator Ronaldson concluded. Information on how members of the veteran community can be involved in the consultation process is available on the DVA website, www.dva. gov.au
superannuation balances, women aged 65 years are expected to live on average three years longer than men aged 65 - so whatever super they have won’t last as long as for men,” Mr O’Neill said. “It is crucial for policy makers to acknowledge this inequity, and ensure retirement safety nets remain adequate as well as find ways to measure the unpaid contributions woman make as carers and mums.”

The report also found that 50 per cent of women aged 55 to 59 years had superannuation balances of $25,000 or less. This is despite the Australian Securities and Investments Commission estimating that the average amount of superannuation required for a comfortable retirement of 20 years, from the age of 65 to 85 is $716,000 for couples and $524,000 for singles. “Not only do women have lower

Michael O’Neill said the inequity between men and women’s superannuation was a result of women filling carer roles over their lifetime. “Women are often the ones who take more of the caring needs for spouses, parents, children and grandkids over their lifetime and this comes at a huge financial cost,” he said. “Women also have lower superannuation balances because of their lower labour force participation rates

THE disparity between men and women’s superannuation balances was highlighted by over 50s lobby group National Seniors Australia for International Women’s Day. Figures from 2010 show the average superannuation balance for men aged 55-64 years is $113,200 and for women in the same age bracket, it is almost $60,000 less at $54,500 (AMP. NATSEM report). Whodunnit?
Women and war THE opening paragraphs of the review on The Monument’s Men (News Weekly, 19 March) are ridiculous: “It’s the war movie you watch when you’re not watching a war movie. (Monuments) is a what a war movie would look like if war movies were made for the fairer sex. Which is to say, of course, that it’s not a war movie at all. There are infinite human aspects to war: there must be as many ways to make a war movie. This review not only makes the assumption that women don’t have a stake in war; it assumes that all members of the ‘un-fair’ sex must like war movies. Surely there are heaps of News Weekly readers of either gender who are not fond of war movies, many who do like that genre and those who aren’t
I READ with interest Indi MP Cathy McGowan’s comments stating that she had been instrumental in getting the ARTC to commence work on the ballast clearing of the rail line. I must set the record straight. In the project update issued by ARTC on the rail track between Melbourne and Sydney it is clearly stated that the Ballast Rehabilitation Program (BRP), including cleaning, commenced in August 2013. I find it very troubling that our sitting member can have the audacity to claim credit for events that took place prior to the Federal Election and her becoming the Member for Indi. This is just one example of how she is pulling the wool over the eyes of the constituents of Indi. Enid Donadio, Freburgh.

Feet are the focus ALBURY residents need to pay more attention to their feet, according to new research which found people spend a third of the year standing - the equivalent of being on their feet for 118 consecutive days. The Newspoll FITZI Feet First report commissioned by The Athlete’s Foot has found that feet have fallen by the wayside as an important consideration, influencer and indicator of health with results showing 67 per cent of NSW residents experience foot problems once a month and yet 34 per cent of residents have not been professionally fitted for shoes in the last 12 months. Amanda Meneghello, podiatrist from The Leeming Podiatry Centre, expressed concern over these statistics. “Australians are used to taking a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to their shoes, however it is important to note that our footprint is as unique as our fingerprint,” she said. “We all have different foot types, walking styles and pressure areas. Wearing well-fitted shoes not only helps provide comfort, but also helps to minimise general foot pain/discomfort and the pain related to foot ailments such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, neuroma or arthritis.” The Athlete’s Foot Albury franchisee Natalie Rowett high-

This April, The Athlete’s Foot is launching FITZI, a brand-new, exclusive fitting technology that helps Albury-Wodonga region residents find the perfect fit for their feet. Launched in stores nationally, FITZI has been two years in the making and uses over 4,000 sensors, video and pressure technologies to provide insights in as little as 90 seconds. INNER Wheel members from around Australia are continuing in their efforts to support cord blood research with their annual Coin for a Cord Day. The aim of the day is to create community awareness of cord blood and raise funds to support research into the collection, transport and uses of cord blood. “There are so many people who have suffered from so many illnesses and if there’s anything we can do to help that would be great, particularly in the transportation of cord blood,” Wodonga Inner Wheel blood co-ordinator Krys Korju said. To date $1.9million has been raised nationally which has enabled 33 grants to be awarded to continue vital research covering areas such as auto immune disease, improvement of the safety of cord blood transplants, work

to reduce brain injury in the newborn and the prevention of graft versus host disease. “They also need to do more research with regard to leukaemia, stroke and heart, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy, and they’re now also putting it towards prostate cancer,” Ms Korju said. “It’s not just for children but the main focus is for children that are born with illness or disabilities and the cord blood does assist in giving them healing and a better quality of life.” The use of cord blood is a miracle of recycling - giving life today and saving lives tomorrow. When transplanted into a patient, different types of blood cells can be produced after the patient’s own blood cells have been depleted or destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation. Transplantation of this blood produces far less immunological complications than transplant of adult bone marrow.
This means that the matching between donors and recipients is less critical, which makes it easier to find suitable cord blood donors. In support of this effort, Inner Wheel Club of Wodonga has arranged two fund-raising initiatives to raise awareness of cord blood research within the region. The first event is a breakfast at La Maison on Sunday 13 April at 8.30am. To purchase tickets at $25 each, contact Julie Barrass on 0438 208 701, Helen Vooght 02 6056 6742 or Krys Korju 0408 575 045. The second is on the National Coin for Cord Day on Friday 2 May, when the club will offer merchandise for sale outside the following outlets: car park entrance to Coles, High Street Wodonga, Gloria Jeans entrance, Centro Plaza, Wodonga and Safeway, Whitebox Rise Wodonga.

The quilt was sewn by a team of women from an idea by Carol Reffold - “Patchwork Poette,” as stage decor for poets during the Man from Snowy River Festival. Kicking off on Thursday evening with a birthday concert, ‘Henry Lawson’ aka James Howard and ‘Banjo’ will meet ‘Two Short Sheilas’ (Melanie Hall and Susie Carcary) followed by the Man From Snowy River film. The spirit of ‘Banjo’ is present every year as MC Geoffrey Graham from Eaglehawk ‘becomes’ the Banjo, popping up in various other places over the weekend. Joining the five guests above, at the Victorian Bush Poetry Championships, other judges and guest performers at Banjo’s Block will be Graeme Johnson (head judge), Trevor Best and a merry band of poetry entrants, friends and devotees.
The Corryong Community Quilt will be on show at the upcoming Man From Snowy River Festival. Entries have been received from 52 competitors from around Australia for both written and performance sections including traditional, modern, original, humorous and serious poems, with a ‘yarn’ section as well. Nine women and nine men will vie for overall male and female champion trophies and tickets to the National Folk Festival 2015. In the ‘Man from Snowy River’ Recital, recordings were judged pre-festival. The three finalists - Robyn Christmas, Neil the Drover and Judy Boyd
will recite at Banjo’s Block in front of the crowd at 6pm on Friday. This festival has something for everyone - The Challenge (a prestige horse event to find the ‘modern Man from Snowy River’, the re-enactment of Banjo’s famous poem out on the hillside), Ute Muster, Bush Idol, art and photography, street parade, Anzac concert, ridgey-didge concerts, market stalls camp tucker by Camp Cooking Club. “There’s a campfire for yarning and singing day and night, so don’t forget your chair, hat and coat!” poetry and bush music event manager Jan Lewis said. “Most poets, yarn-spinners and musicians have the MFSR Bush Festival on their ‘gotta do it at least once’ list - maybe this is the year to do it.” The Man from Snowy River Festival is on from 3 - 6 April. For more information, call Jan Lewis on 02 6077 4332, email info@vbpma.com.au for poets’ inquiries or visit www.bushfestival.com.au for general festival info.

The Geebung Polo Club vs the Cuff ’n Collar.
Geebung Polo lives on “IT WAS somewhere up the country in a land of rock and scrub, that they formed an institution called the Geebung Polo Club”- A.B. Banjo Paterson. The Geebung Polo, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, is a strippedback polo match set in the picturesque Dinner Plain where City and Country polo teams clash for the annual title. Based on the famous Banjo Paterson poem ‘The Geebung Polo Club’
Box office
this polo match is unique and raw, stripping back the glitz and glam more recently associated with polo events. Instead, the Geebung Polo encapsulates the essence of true Aussie culture just as Paterson did in his writing. High Country legend and participating polo player, Ken Connley, is the ultimate Australian salt-of-the-earth icon. Featuring as the stunt man in The Man from Snowy River and having tamed over 1000 wild brumbies in his time, Connley is a true cattleman rep-
resenting the key ideals of this event. Captaining the country team and playing alongside his son and fellow farmers, he will take the field and lead his team against the ‘city slickers.’ The Geebung Polo match is set for play in Cobungra Station, Victoria’s largest cattle station since the 1800s. The Geebung Polo Club is a classic Australian poem and the event is a great platform to celebrate the age-old rivalry of city vs country and bring Paterson’s words to life.

Noah’s rain proves a pain MOVIE: Noah STARRING: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins and Logan Lerman. DIRECTOR: Darren Aronofsky DURATION: 139 minutes THIS is a painful film. Magnificent acting, stunning special effects, engaging format and an impressive conceptual exploration should make for a decent film, yes? No. Not when you add in some absolutely ridiculous characters (namely the giant rock monsters) and some seriously incongruous plot elements. What it does make for is a very angry crowd, whether you’re a Bible-bashing Chris-
tian or an atheist movie buff. It’s like the child that had all the brains, beauty and talent that turned out to be a drug addict, or as my learned companion offered “like the Bible meets Lord of The Rings.” Aronofsky’s Noah attempts to tell the story of Noah’s Ark. It follows the journey of Noah (Crowe) and his family, which began with his visions of God destroying the world in order to eventually cleanse it. So Noah builds the ark, the animals come and everyone outside of Noah’s family decides they’re going to take it over. Of course, they try and fail thanks to the giant rock monsters, just like the Bible says (insert rolling eyes). Another storyline followed
is that of Noah’s adoptive daughter Il-La (Watson). Now this is actually quite interesting. Il-La was an orphan found by Noah before the ark was built. She originally fell in love with Ham (Lerman) and found she was barren, but after a fascinating meeting with her adoptive grandfather, falls for the other brother and becomes pregnant. From here, her battle with Noah, and more importantly, Noah’s battle within himself, powerfully engages the viewer and makes for a thoughtprovoking exploration of loyalty and right and wrong. It’s a long, frustrating road to the end of this film. - Krysten Manuel

Homes&Property Albury Wodonga
Views to Willow Park THE term ‘a bricks and mortar investment is a safe one’ can certainly be applied to this feature home perched on an elevated block claiming views over Willow Park. LEASED to the Defence Housing Authority, the home comprises four generously proportioned bedrooms, a comfortable size formal lounge and a large kitchen-meals-family room. As is the norm now, it has an electric oven and gas cooktop, double sink and pantry. There’s an en suite to the master bedroom and walk-in robes, with built-ins in the remaining three bedrooms. One of the many design pluses is the double garage underneath and a staircase allowing direct entry to the home. Fantastic when the weather is inclement. There is access to the backyard via double
gates which means an in-ground pool could be installed quite easily when you assume occupancy of the home. Overall a very good home that would meet the needs of a broad range of buyers/investors. Naturally the home has ducted heating and cooling for all-year comfort and comes with floor coverings, light fittings, window furnishings and of course those views. The home is leased to the DHA which manage the property so that if the house is vacant the rent still continues, and speaking of rent that is currently fixed at $375 per week with the lease on going until July 2016. This makes it an ideal timeframe for someone planning retirement and looking for a home in a quality location, or maybe if DHA decided against a further lease then if the existing rental market continues in the same vein as today it will prove to be a very popular choice for a broad range of prospective tenants. Under the Wodonga Real Estate (WRE) tenancy and sales marketing agreement, WRE is obliged to give the DHA at least 48 hours to inspect. Competitively priced at $379,000 the vendor reluctantly offers the home for sale so they can pursue another project they have in mind. Go to www.wodongarealestate.com.au for more photos.

Land on the up NORTH East grazing farmland values have increased substantially on average each year for the past 23 years, a new report released by Rural Finance shows. The Victorian Farmland Values Index, a study of the value of Victorian agricultural land, tracked the results of almost 45,000 land sales since 1990, including 6,750 land sales in the North East grazing region, 566 land sales in the North East Cropping Region and 4,821 land sales in the Northern Irrigation Region. The index, which took two years to produce, is the first work of its kind in Victoria and demonstrates the strength of Victorian agriculture and the investment potential of agricultural land, according to Rural Finance CEO Rob Goudswaard. “This is a very positive report for Victorian agriculture, because the value of farmland underpins our farming businesses and rural communities,” he said. “This report shows that over the long term, rural land values have increased ahead of inflation. This long-term view shows continual growth and reflects the strength and resilience of agricultural industries, despite the many challenges they’ve faced in that period, and demonstrates the value of farmland as part of an investment portfolio.” The Victorian Farmland Values Index provides analysis at state, industry and regional levels, and is based on data compiled from the past 23 years. The report found that in the North East Grazing Region land increased in value by an average of 4.24 per cent each year between 1990 and 2013, with $716 million worth of land traded since 1990 of properties between 30 and 60ha in size, comprising 3,030 sales. The report also found $1,353 million worth of land had been traded since 1990 of land over 60 ha, comprising 3,720 sales, and intergenerational-family sales accounted for 6.1 per cent of sales for properties between 30 and 60ha and 8.6 per cent for land over 60ha. In the North East Cropping Region, the report found land increased in value by an average of 2.49 per cent each year between 1990 and 2013, $180 million worth of land had been traded since 1990, land sold had a median parcel size of 121ha and intergenerational-family sales accounted for 15.6 per cent of total sales.
Great news for landholders in North East Victoria as farmland values continue to rise.

Looking through the buying eyes FOR many of us, buying in an area we know is the ideal. But sometimes that’s not possible. Everything from a work transfer to school zones, being unable to afford to buy where we are renting or simply deciding it’s time for a change can mean house-hunting in an unfamiliar area. For those already living in a regional

area - and looking to move to a new location within Victoria - the new area is likely to require some adjustment, in terms of work, schooling and general day-to-day living. Similarly, those taking a “tree change” and moving to regional Victoria from the city - or from one regional area to another - will find life very different in the new location. For these buyers, it might be a move to a town or village known only from holidays. They may know where to head to buy food and do other shopping, but how well do they actually know the area? Often the new location has only been visited during a summer or winter break and will offer an all-new experience. Pre-purchase research before buying is always very important, but all the more so when purchasing a home in an all-new area. In the first instance, talk to local agents, who will know the best areas that are right for you and that will meet your longer-
term needs. Other valuable sources can be the local shopkeepers and residents. Library and community noticeboards and the local newspaper and its website list local activities, community groups and classes. Sporting groups are also a handy source of information about local events and activities. Browse around the local supermarket and shopping strip. Are there many families? Older retirees? Young professionals? Doing this, plus visiting parks should give you a good idea of the type and age of the locals. Walk through a few streets and get a feel for the streetscape - are the roads busy? What are houses in the area like - are they well cared for? Gathering all this information will not only help ensure you are buying into a neighbourhood which offers what you want, it will enable you to settle more quickly into your new community.

ALBURY Wodonga Yacht club has been out on the water in recent weeks, and not just the serious sailors either. The club conducts introductory courses throughout the year and last weekend, they took it a step further with some racing for those who are just getting their sea (or is that lake) legs. “Last weekend sailors of all abilities enjoyed some introductory racing out at Lake Hume,” club member John Demeo said. “For sailors who have just completed tackers or our better sailing courses, this was a chance to start to get to grips with timing their starts and sailing with more boats. “Other sailors took the opportunity to give someone else the helm or swap boats for a different experience. “The wind was very light to begin with, but most sailors took the opportunity to have lunch at the Yardarm Cafe and enjoy the better westerly breeze which came up in the afternoon. All arrived back at the beach with a smile and some new experience.” The club has more than 300 members - most are social but there are still enough serious sailors for them to have 20 boats out on the water for their regular races. Coming up they will have their “sailabilty” days for the disabled, with more racing to come in the next few weeks.

The Buffalo Stampede offers winners flights to Chamonix in the French Alps to compete in the World SkyRunning Championship.
Run for the skies, on high ONE of the most challenging trail races in the country will debut on the trails of Mount Buffalo this weekend. The inaugural Buffalo Stampede runs on 5 and 6 April and includes a SkyMarathon (42km) and Ultra SkyMarathon (75km), running from Bright to the pristine high-altitude landscape of Mount Buffalo National Park and return. Alpine Shire Council mayor Peter Roper said the Buffalo Stampede added another aspect to the Alpine Shire’s reputation as a hub for nature-based tourism. “We are building a strong
position as a premier destination for events that make the most of the great outdoors and showcase our pristine natural environment,” he said. “This is the first Australian event to fulfil the requirements of the Skyrunning brand, which is a powerful step towards cementing the Alpine Shire and surrounds as the place to go for high-altitude training and events.” Buffalo Stampede has attracted a large field of national and international competitors. “The first locals home in both the SkyMarathon and UltraSkyMarathon will win
flights to Chamonix in the French Alps to compete in the World SkyRunning Championship in June,” race director Sean Greenhill said. “Bright is the Australian town that best combines an outdoor adventure culture, friendliness, and high mountains in the European or North American style. It was an obvious choice for Australasia’s first SkyRun, and as a result we have the best runners from Australia and New Zealand coming to compete, alongside a few stars from further afield.” For more information visit www.buffalostampede.com.au

Great day to play A BEAUTIFUL day greeted all players at the 10th annual Flair Alatalo Bros Home Appliances Golf Day, held last Saturday. Flair Cabinets general manager Ted Lawrence said the day was one of the premier events on the Thurgoona golf calendar and was always eagerly anticipated by all players. “All players get their money’s worth on the day in all aspects - food, refreshments, golf and prizes,” he said. Mr Lawrence says he is extremely happy, with in excess of $50,000 being raised in the 10 years the event has been running. The money has been donated to charity, with net proceeds and donations administered by the Rotary Club of Albury West. Last year’s proceeds were donated to cancer carers accommodation, with this year’s proceeds following suit. After a magnificent barbecue, the golf started at12.30pm, with almost 170 players on the course. Mr Lawrence said the resort wouldn’t have coped with more than 170 participants and was
nearly full, many golfers travelling from interstate to be a part of it. “We have people flying down from Sydney and coming up from Melbourne,” he said “People come from everywhere to play.” The Flair Alatalo Bros Home Appliances Golf Day kicked off at 10am when participants registered for the day’s activities and at 12.30 the golf began with a shotgun start, lasting close to six hours. The event also included a barbecue breakfast before the golfers set out onto the course and then drinks at the bar afterwards to celebrate the day. The mastermind behind the golf day is more than proud to see his event flourish 10 years on. “I started it in 2005 and the event goes from strength to strength each year,” Mr Lawrence said. “It’s been very good for the last 10 years and it will continue to be, the success being a combination of the ongoing support of the sponsors and the players.”

O&M FOOTY2014
This week kicks off a big season in the O&M for everyone, including local radio broadcasters 1494 2AY with their O&M Live coverage. 2AY Sports Presenter Simon Corr again joins the NewsWeekly this season with a regular look at all the season’s action and insights into his weekly selections. Corr is pictured here, left, with fellow commentators Robbie Mackinlay and Steve Murphy. 117834
The (real) big show IT SHAPES up as one of the biggest Ovens and Murray football seasons of all time. More former AFL players in the league than ever. A more even competition is promised, with more genuine contenders setting themselves for that last game of the year, and without doubt more interest at both a local and national level. However unfortunately in the off-season much of the hype and publicity has surrounded the crisis at the Nth Albury Football Club. In a brave move the Hoppers faced the inevitable and declared they were in dire financial troubles. Unfortunately this sparked a massive player exodus from the club, with a large core of senior players seeking refuge at other clubs. Some of these players were still contracted, and the result has been a very public dispute over contracts, appeals and opinions. Everyone has a version on what they think has occurred and have been all too willing to share it. Now that we are on the eve of the season, I say enough is enough. It’s surely time to lick
your wounds, cut your losses and move on with the show. The football public will be divided over the off-seasons actions but stewing on it surely does everybody involved more harm than good. The Hoppers are desperately trying to get themselves back on track ... the cards have fallen, deal with them and let’s all move on and focus on the amazing year that lies ahead. An amazing season deserves an amazing beginning and that’s exactly what we will have this Saturday. After meeting in the past five Ovens and Murray Grand Finals, the Albury Tigers and Yarrawonga will reacquaint themselves in the season opener. There have been a few new acqusitions to both sides, but it has largely been the Tigers who have been more active on the recruiting front. Literally the biggest of the new arrivals at Tigerland are the O’h Ailpin brothers, who both possess incredibile athleticism for men of their daunting stature. This Saturday I am expecting a marquee contest between O’h Ailpin number one, Setanta, and former Carlton team-
mate Brendan Fevola. The big Fev is fresh off a 12-goal blitz in a cameo game down at Horsham, however I strongly doubt he encountered an opponent of the size or strength of Setanta. I can’t wait to see the two big men of the competition one out in the goalsquare, and I dare say I am not alone. Adding to that potential match-up is the fact that this is yet another grand final rematch between the two, and a stand-alone game in Albury for the afternoon guarantees a massive crowd on hand for the day. When it comes to picking winners between these two, my form is pretty poor, but I think the home game and the influence of the big O’h Ailpin should be enough to get Albury over the line. In other games Lavington will unveil both former St Kilda recruit Justin Koschitzke and Hoppers forward Adam Prior in a game under the Lavington lights, Saturday night against Wodonga. Big forward targets are about all the Panthers have lacked in the past and the acquisition of both puts them right in the premiership race. Wodonga Raiders will be
hoping to kick their season off in style at home against Myrtleford, whilst Nth Albury and Wangaratta will wait another week before they lock horns with opponents Wang Rovers and Corowa Rutherglen respectively, in the second half of a split opening round.
My selections: ALBURY v Yarrawonga WODONGA RAIDERS v Myrtleford LAVINGTON v Wodonga Nth Albury v WANG ROVERS WANGARATTA v Corowa Rutherglen
