Stop “pillaging” our lakes JOLENE OGLE Stop pillaging our lakes: that’s the message from Lake Cooroibah resident Brian Williams to commercial netters who, he says, are devastating the environment.
Mr Williams, whose property backs onto Lake Cooroibah, said he has seen commercial netters “pillaging” the lake daily, using 800 metre long nets to scrape
the shallow lake, leaving the eco-system in disrepair. “Where are the fish? This lake should be teaming with fish, crabs and rays. But there is nothing,” Mr Williams said. “Where are the birds? There are no birds because there is nothing for them to fish. “I have witnessed these commercial netters take everything they can lay their hands on for pet food and bait.” Mr Williams said the community needs to take a stand to
stop the devastation and is asking local residents to join the fight to save Lake Cooroibah. “People power is what it takes,” he said. Mr Williams’ comments came as the State Government announced the terms of reference in the fisheries management review. Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister John McVeigh said the review was aimed at simplifying fisheries management, cutting red tape and improving environmental sustainability, and
will cover all aspects of commercial, recreational and traditional fishing. Mr McVeigh said the review will be headed by an independent specialist to ensure transparency, with a Ministerial advisory committee made up of people who represent the diverse fisheries interests in Queensland. Mr McVeigh said the community can provide feedback throughout the review, once the independent specialist has been appointed.

RIVERFRONT RUMBLE Pregnant mum slams Makepeace Island noise JIM FAGAN Tewantin mother and local business owner, Natalie Miller, is frustrated and upset that Virgin Blue boss Sir Richard Branson wants to make money at the expense of her family
and her neighbours with his intention of making his Makepeace Island a boutique resort.
Thirty-one year-old Natalie has a three-year-old year old son and is expecting another baby in five months. On behalf of residents at Cambridge Court, which fronts the island in
Noosa River, she and husband, Ben Northling, have written to Noosa Council asking it to “take a strong stance against the numbers of people allowed on the island, loud music and the activity level of the island’s noisy diesel barge.” The appeal to council is timely. Just before de-amalgamation Make-
peace Island (Operations) Pty Ltd received approval from Sunshine Coast Council to convert the 9.3 hectare island into a boutique resort subject to conditions which limited guests to 20 and amplified music not being audible between 10pm and 7am. The company has appealed to the Planning and Environment Court
against what it calls the “unreasonable conditions” and tonight, as the issue is now their responsibility, Noosa councillors will decide if council will defend the appeal. Council planning officers and its planning and organisation committee have already recommended that it do so.

But the real issue is that sometimes, through no fault of your own, or others, bad things happen. In the blink of an eye your life or the life of a friend or loved one can change forever. the better and when something sad or shocking happens to another, it’s time to think about it. If you’re not happy with an aspect of your life, do something about it. Yes, it’s easier to stay put and whinge but you’ll be happier if you make a change. But if you can’t change it, don’t waste any more negativity on it. It may sound crass to say, “Make the most of it”, but that’s just what we have to do sometimes. And much of the time, our troubles pale into insignificance when we hear about others. Like Alex. Life as he knew it has gone. His career has gone. His partner and family are also suffering the shock and the grief and the worries about his future. Mayor’s fat free plan for budget JIM FAGAN Mayor Noel Playford thinks it will be two years before Noosa has a 10-year financial plan that says all is well but the shire has to trim a lot of fat and waste out of the next two budgets before it has guaranteed financial sustainability.
“What we are engaged in now is a lot of serious work investigating in fine detail a lot of areas where there is an inefficient allocation of money and finding out where we are not getting value-for-money.” Mr Playford met Noosa Today for an early preview of Noosa’s budget for next financial year. “What I am trying to do is not build in any rate increase. In other words, ratepayers have got to understand, just as they had to understand when I was elected in 1988, that we’ve got to first get the waste and the fat out of the organisation. “Often, when you do that, you find you don’t need a rate increase anyway. Then, if you
do need an increase because of what the community expects you to do, at least you know you are spending inefficiently. “I say I’m trying to do it because, while it is a council decision in the end, the Local Government Act has been changed in recent times and it is now the Mayor’s responsibility to prepare the budget. “Obviously, you don’t do that in isolation. I will be working with staff and councillors but what I present to Council will not be what everybody else wants. It’s my responsibility. The council does not have to go along with it. They can change it.” Mr Playford said the first week he was in office he “got the staff together at the depot here. I just talked to them, saying this is the way we are going to do business. Everybody has the right to have ideas. We want ideas. We want improvements. “I said it doesn’t matter where you are in the organisation, everybody has a role to play. I want people thinking about our future and how we can do things better. Your ideas are valued. Make sure you don’t keep them to yourself.”

JOLENE OGLE The long months spent fighting to save Cooroy Bowls Club are finally over with the sale of the land announced at the RSL AGM at the weekend.
Cooroy RSL & Citizens Memorial Club general manager Tina Bernard confirmed the land had been sold to local
family business, Listra Pty Ltd. Listra has run national businesses from Cooroy for more than 20 years and from Noosa for the 10 years prior. In a statement to Noosa Today, company director Ronald McCarthy said: “It is our full intention to offer the rinks to the new bowls club, allowing them to operate independently under a generous lease
back agreement. “Listra has had negotiations with Cooroy Bowls Club over the past 10 years, at one stage running the club’s restaurant,” Mr McCarthy said. “The bowls club has suffered a disruptive decade, however we are confident that the new club will now enter a stable growth period. They certainly will have our full support.” Mr McCarthy said
it was the company’s full intention to run the restaurant and bar and it is currently in the process of having a liquor license transferred to the venue. Mr McCarthy said he was aware the sale of the land was a sensitive issue and was hoping for a seamless transition. “So far, we have received nothing but goodwill. It is onwards and upwards,” he said.

NOOSA council news New Biosphere Reserve deal proposed for Noosa JIM FAGAN Wider community involvement and outcomes are a vital part of the new Noosa Biosphere Reserve management model which Noosa Council will consider tonight.
And if it acts on the recommendation of its Biosphere working group, Mayor Noel Playford, Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot, Cr Frank Pardon and Cr Tony Wellington, Council will look for more feedback at a community consultation session on April 15, as well as from the Biosphere’s six sector boards. Among the proposed new structure arrangements is replacing the existing Noosa Biosphere Ltd (NBL) with a new authority called (subject to legal advice) the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Project Ltd. The working group received 67 submissions from the public and held
workshops to create a management model for the Biosphere Reserve and on Monday Cr Abbot told the council’s general committee, “The most important thing in all of this for me is what the Biosphere Reserve can do for us in the future, how we value that brand and how we can actually build that new economy we need to protect our lifestyle and our environment. Looking not the least bit jet lagged, Cr Abbot said, “Twenty hours ago I stepped on to the world’s largest aircraft in the city of Dubai with six or seven hundred other people. One of the things I thought about on the way home was how small this world really is now and how we can sometimes get somewhat insulated and insular in the way we think in our own local community. “It really was an eye-opener to me to see how the world is now open to us, and the opportunities we have in front of us, if we can expand to meet that market.”
“We have the opportunity now to think about that isolation we can create for ourselves so easily by having too much regulation around us, by having too much obstruction and control.” He said everyone in the Biosphere Reserve Project, “as we will call it if it gets going,” had the freedom and a capacity to break out of the past and isolated ways of doing business. “And I’m not just talking about the Biosphere Reserve. I’m talking about tourism, I’m talking about the council, I’m talking about a lot of things. This proposal gives us the opportunity to break down the barriers.” Councillor Frank Wilkie said the report was a great synthesis of all the
ideas presented. “It shows how, even with some strongly held views on either side of the debate, there has been a lot of ground given. “What I like about the report is it allows the final model to build on work that has been done so far by the existing sector boards, governing board and also acknowledges the work done by the volunteers. “As I have observed at the meetings, it is not an easy process. There is a lot invested in this and it is very important. It is always going to be fraught but I think this report indicates a willingness to synthesise the ideas that have been brought up and we’re only at the first lap of the mile. There is still a lot more to go but I

think it is a very good start.” The report says the new company will be much more focussed than the current objectives of NBL and will have a significant emphasis on strategy and brand. Directors will have a mix of skills matching the proposed vision of the new authority. There will be between seven and nine directors appointed by council and will include the Mayor and one councillor. Only Noosa local government area residents would be eligible for directorship and non-councillor directors rotated every three years. A senior project officer and an administrative officer will give dayto-day support to people implementing Biosphere projects. They will not work in the council precinct but in a community-based hub acting as the practical co-ordination for the delivery and doing. Council will fund these roles and provide office accommodation.

Kin Kin rock take: Answers sought JIM FAGAN Noosa Council will decide tonight if it will seek legal opinion on the amount of rock that can be taken each year from Kin Kin quarry when it starts full operation.
“We owe it to the Kin Kin community and those who use the Kin Kin-Pomona Road to provide some sort of answer to the capacity of the quarry,” Councillor Tony Wellington told the council’s general committee on Monday. He said in 2003 the then Noosa Council had extended the life of the quarry with the clear intent of having no increase in the existing scale and intensity, otherwise a new application for a material change of use would have been needed. The then owners, Readymix, had estimated the capacity of the quarry to be 140,000 tonnes a year. “In 2010 court action by the Kin Kin Community Group contested the quarry’s approval and the decision by the judge was that the quarry operators had a legal right to proceed. “However, there are
aspects of the judgement that raise questions about the limits of the quarry operations. “Quotes from the judgement suggest that, while the Ready-mix plans were never formally approved by Noosa Council, the judge said, that in reality they were approved. Furthermore the judgement notes that the Ready-mix capacity of 140,000 tonnes was the estimate at the time of the council’s decision. “So, putting two and two together, Council’s decision was not to allow an increase and it could be argued that this meant no increase on 140,000 tonnes. This is not setting a new limit on the quarry but an attempt to determine if the Ready-mix limit has actually always been in existence which the court judgement tends to suggest.” The committee decided to recommend to Council that legal clarification be sought by CEO Brett de Chastel regarding council’s ability to determine the annual capacity limit of the quarry in light of the council motion of 2003 and Judge Dodds’ judgement in 2010. Another recommendation to the Council asks for a letter to be sent to the Department of Transport and Main Roads advising them of concerns that Kin Kin-Pomona Road is not of an appropriate standard and design to cater for additional quarry trucks.
Council’s decision was not to allow an increase.

This from a reader: “As a disabled member of the public, it continually upsets me to find that shoppers leave their empty supermarket trolleys in disabled car spaces! This means that as a disabled driver, I need to stop and remove the trolley to another area prior to parking in the designated space, which is sometimes quite difficult. These offenders will know who they are and I hope they are not disabled drivers!”
Hot off the press, Noosa Council Mayor Noel Playford, was delighted to receive the very first new Noosa Library membership card.
The launch of the new cards marks the completion of the separation of Noosa Council library services from Sunshine Coast Council. Library members can now collect their new card at Noosaville and Cooroy Libraries or on the Noosa mobile library. The new library card will be able to be used at any branch of Noosa
Library Service: Noosaville Library, Cooroy Library, the Noosa mobile library or via the online Noosa eLibrary. The new library card features the artwork of Lenni Semmelink, who created one of the hanging banners in Noosa Library. The banners aim to raise public awareness and appreciation of Noosa’s natural assets. For more information about changes to your libraries visit www.libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au or phone 5329 6555.

Mum slams Island noise FROM PAGE 1 “We bought this house in 2006 before Sir Richard bought the island and our plan was to raise our family here but, if the noise and island activities escalates, we’ll end up moving,” said Natalie. “A school friend’s family owned this house before we bought it and I’ve been coming here for many years. This is a very private and quiet area. At the beginning we thought it was going to be okay for Sir Richard and his staff to have somewhere to have a holiday. “But when there’s a function on the island it can be lights, camera, action with the big noisy diesel barge going back and forth taking supplies or people to the island. When that settles, we have the amplified music in the evening which can be heard while we are eating dinner or in bed.” She said most of the 20 objectors were retired people who wanted to keep the river front a quiet residential and private area with no escalating noise levels. “There has to be restrictions for us to cope. When I’m putting my son to bed I don’t really want to hear loud music or escalated noise levels on a consistent basis.” Asked if Cambridge Court had considered
Tewantin mum, Natalie Miller, with three-year-old Miller Northling on the rear deck of their home. Makepeace Island is behind her house.
objecting to the boutique island development application, Natalie explained that she made an informal objection and wrote a detailed letter to the
Sunshine Coast Council last July once she became aware of the proposed application. The residents were then waiting for the notification period so they could formally object as a group. “We missed the announcement because the notification sign on the island couldn’t be seen from our homes, and the announcement was made in media we don’t read every day. “Over the years they keep asking for something more and it keeps getting approved. And now the residents here are saying enough is enough. We live here, too, and we want to take a stand against it. “How on earth did this beautiful, natural habitat and a quiet residential area become an environment for events like the “The X Factor”? In August last year Makepeace hosted the Channel 7 talent show The X Factor, with guests Guy Sebastian and Natalie Bassingthwaite, which resulted in complaints to council. “It was a big scale production with intense lighting and loud music,” said Natalie. Makepeace Island was bought in 2007 and completed in 2009 as a private retreat for family and friends of Sir Richard and Virgin Blue co-founder, Brett Godfrey.
Five simple ways to WOW your clients and customers RETAIL REVIVAL AMANDA STEVENS
As a speaker and author on customer advocacy, as well as a small business owner, I am constantly on the lookout for ways to generate positive word-of-mouse by creating WOW customer service moments.
Customer experiences that add value, raise eyebrows, warm hearts, surprise and delight make people feel good about their decision to do business with you. It increases the perceived value of your product or service and compels them to share the experience with their social circles – online and offline. When customers get red-carpet treatment, they want their friends and family to enjoy the same quality of service. Ex-
ceptional customer experiences give your customers ‘bragging rights’ and every time they share their story with a friend, they’re not only doing a great marketing job on your behalf, they’re re-enforcing their own decision to remain loyal to you. This benefits your business in several ways: they will shop with you more often, they’re more likely to purchase new or premium products and they’re far more forgiving if things go wrong. So how do you go that extra mile? How do you unlock the hidden potential of your existing customers and create in-store experiences that are so unexpected and memorable that your customers can’t help but become your unpaid, walking brand ambassador? ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF A MILESTONE If you did nothing else but acknowledge the key milestones that go on in the relationships with your customers, you would grow your business. For example, it might be
your customer’s 10th visit to you, which could trigger a surprise reward or gift. My mortgage broker recently sent me an ‘anniversary’ gift, which prompted me to refer a friend to him just a few weeks later. INTANGIBLE VALUE-ADD You might choose to extend warranty, give your customer a link to a free online tutorial for their product or a card for free customer service access.
adding value, you’re introducing your customer to a new product that they may purchase next time. The ‘Gift with Purchase’ strategy is one that department store cosmetics companies use to single-handedly prop their sales up. What can you do in your business to add value? Is there a product you could have made available (or have made up) that has a high, perceived value, but is a low, real cost to you? As an example, try giving away free umbrellas with each purchase on rainy days, free sunscreen or bottled water on hot days or other relevant give-away that may cost you a fraction of the perceived value to have produced – all with your brand name on it, of course!
Exceptional customer experiences give your customers ‘bragging rights’.

KoalaTrackers call on Council for action ALEX HARRIS Far from the constant cry of ‘last koala here’ or ‘last koala there’, I am of the firm belief that we have a tiny population of urban koalas clinging to life in Noosa that needs our full support and every effort to ensure they and their offspring survive and thrive as residents of the new Noosa Council area.
There are clear hot spots for koala deaths and injuries where we would like to see Council, Energex and other stakeholders work together to ensure a resolution that enhances the safety and survival of the species in Noosa. First and foremost is the intersection and surrounds of Leslie Drive-Noosa Drive-Weyba Road. If you look at the map on KoalaTracker, you can see koalas have been sighted from the AFL football grounds, through the RACV Resort (which used to be a natural sanctuary for koalas), through to Noosa Springs along and between the Weyba
Creek Esplanade and Leslie Drive. Or more correctly, sighted, killed and injured by car. There are three key dangers for koalas in this precinct: volume of traffic, speed, lighting. Council is aware of the danger - signs with pictures of wildlife were erected; poles allowing swift koala exit from the road up the rock wall on Leslie Drive and the timber fence on Noosa Drive enclosing the RACV Resort, were embedded on build. While Eenie Creek Road (itself another hotspot for later discussion) has removed some of the volume of through traffic from Leslie Drive-Weyba Road there remains the issue of speed and lighting at this critical intersection. It is a 60kms per hour speed zone, yet regardless of how many drivers on
Leslie Drive, Noosa Drive and Weyba Road entering the roundabout are actually doing the speed limit or under as they approach the intersection, 60km is too high a speed. Three key koala crossings exist in the vicinity of this roundabout. The extreme danger zone is on Weyba Road between the Weyba Creek bridge and the roundabout where koalas cross from Weyba Esplanade to and from the RACV Resort. The second is between Weyba Esplanade and the RACV Resort on Leslie Drive. The third is between the RACV Resort and the residential estate of Cooloola Hill across Noosa Drive. There is a secondary danger zone on Leslie Drive, between the roundabout and just past Paul Street where the road splits into two levels, where koalas were fre-

quent traffic stoppers until the second last vacant block on Leslie Drive was stripped of about 40 food trees in 2010. Koalas still cross there, but not as frequently. Rather than signs with pretty pictures that are meaningless to most drivers, I would suggest blunt text that states: SLOW DOWN KOALAS CROSSING on all three roads and at two points on each - leading to and at the roundabout. Enhanced street lighting at the roundabout, and specifically between the bridge over Weyba Creek and the roundabout on Weyba Road, is called for to ensure drivers at night can see if an animal runs onto the road. And it would assist greatly to have a reduced speed for 30 metres from the roundabout out on each of these roads, and at other such hotspots throughout the shire. With a juvenile koala sighted just last Friday morning on Leslie Drive heading to the roundabout, it is important we revisit the need for risk mitigation sooner rather than later. Community day to restore bushland A community planting day will take place on Saturday, April 5 to begin the restoration of riparian bushland at Noosaville.
Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said the Weyba Creek Bushcare Group, supported by Noosa Council, Noosa Landcare and Noosa Integrated Catchment Association Inc, had successfully secured a grant of $19,565 for the project
through the Queensland Government’s Everyone’s Environment program. Mr Elmes said volunteers are being sought to assist with the project. “There will be 15 working bees over the next 18 months to manually remove and chemically treat a range of weeds from bushland around the Weyba Creek and Weyba Esplanade,” Mr Elmes said.

Businesses confident, profits will follow ISOBEL COLEMAN Business confidence in the Shire is increasing and there could soon be an improvement in profitability.
That was the view of CCIQ Noosa this week, following the government’s announcement that Queensland is the only state where businesses have a positive view of the economy.
Treasurer and Minister for Trade Tim Nicholls said the Sensis Business Index survey showed Queensland businesses were positive about both the state’s economy and Government’s efforts to support the business sector. “The index shows the net balance of confidence was +28 per cent in this month, up 22 percentage points from a year ago,” Mr Nicholls said.
“What this says is that businesses recognise our economy is on the cusp of strong growth.” CCIQ Noosa President Sarah Fisher agreed. “The latest CCIQ Pulse survey showed confidence in the region remains at near-unprecedented levels despite a slight drop from the rapid post-election increases,” she said. “We have had a great summer on
the tourism front, which is always a good sign for Noosa, and more recently we have had a great turn out for the Festival of Surfing. “Should this confidence remain we would hope to see further increases in general business conditions and eventually profitability over the next 12 months.” Mr Nicholls said businesses considered the Queensland Government
the most supportive state or territory government in Australia. “Our efforts to cut red tape, support small business and plan for the future are all giving confidence to the business sector,” he said. “A confident business sector is essential if we are to see continued growth in our economy. The only thing holding us back is the $80 billion debt we inherited from Labor.”
Mentoring is beneficial for both sides Owning a business anywhere in the world can be a lonely, stressful and traumatic place – especially when times are tough.
But for business owners in Noosa this doesn’t have to be the case. Noosa Chamber of Commerce’s successful business mentoring service is in full swing. Over the last few years over 100 businesses of all shapes and sizes have benefitted from this dedicated band of retired and semi-retired business people who are keen to put back into the business community all that they have gathered from their years of experience. For $200 per year a local business, no matter how large or small, can benefit from this innovative and affordable scheme. For details visit www.bmn.org.au or phone 3173 1849. In her sentencing, Ms Callaghan said she would usually consider jail time for violence, but took into consideration Power’s legal ambitions as well as noting the punch was “out of character”. No conviction was recorded. The Queensland Police Service has since lodged an appeal with the District Court at Maroochydore stating the sentence is manifestly inadequate.

nity-based mentoring program is working to connect young people with jobs by improving their employability. Mentoring2Employment is part of United Synergies’ Connect2Employment program and assists early school leavers aged 14-19 years with transition pathways to sustained, meaningful employment in the local region by enhancing their employability through job readiness initiatives. The program was developed for disadvantaged young people, to assist them in securing sustainable training and employment outcomes. Through funding United Synergies has engaged a mentoring coordinator who manages the recruitment of volunteer community mentors. All volunteer mentors are interviewed to establish their skills and capacity to mentor and the level of commitment they can provide to a mentoring relationship. They also complete a two-day training workshop. If you would like to become a volunteer community mentor, please contact Renee McKenzie on 5409 4900.

Listening bank brings back Harold After years of planning Noosa has welcomed a new version of an old friend.
Niki Andrinopoulos with sponsors and students from Noosaville, Tewantin, Cooroy and Sunshine Beach State Schools
Harold the Giraffe is synonymous with the Life Education program. And now Harold is back and he has a brand new home. The old Life Education Van provided our kids with drug and health education in Noosa for many years, and now a new van will continue that good work and help empower one million young Australians each year to make safe choices. A not-for-profit organisation, the program relies on student fees and local community funding to meet costs - and that’s where Bendigo Bank stepped in. Locals voted at a Tewantin Community Forum held by Bendigo Bank in 2011 to make funding the new van a priority. So through its sponsorship, the Tewantin Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank,
New directors for local service organisation United Synergies, located in Tewantin, provide direct services and support to individuals, families and communities to assist them in achieving their full potential.
Chairman Geoff Walters said the new appointments bring a wealth of business and sector experience to the board, adding to the talent and expertise of the existing directors, Ian Montague and Selena Cartwright. The new appointments are Libby Wherrett, who brings more than 20 years’ experience in public service senior management;
Kathleen Colclough, who has extensive finance, small business and not-for-profit sector experience; Greg Livingstone from a large agribusiness and consumer products company, and Scott Wallace, who is currently Student Services head of department at Sunshine Beach State High School.

Co-ordinator Niki Andrinopoulos said she can’t wait to welcome local school kids to the new hightech mobile classroom. “Bendigo Bank was quick to realise the importance of the program and Wayne Hoens and his team in Tewantin have been marvellous in their support for so many years now. Their funding of $40,000 along with other sponsors’ generosity will now provide a legacy for our children for the next 20 years,” she said. Who Remembers When? JOLENE OGLE Who remembers watching American Quilt in the roofless cinema three of the Noosa Cinemas?
Ron and Myrna Stamford do – it was them who had taken the roof off, after all! After buying the cinemas in 1988, the new owners decided to build another big screen, to make a total of three theatres. But the roof was yet to be built and only a temporary roof offered little protection from the bad weather. “American Quilt, we were showing that in cinema three and we had half the roof off,” Ron and Myrna recall. “They had temporary covering, but it was really bad weather and we had rubbish tins in there catching the water. Myrna went to the office to get some free tickets to give out, but (the cinema-goers) didn’t even want to take them. They said ‘Oh no, we enjoyed the film’,” they laugh as they recall the day. Now known as Noosa 5 Cinemas, the complex was originally built as a two theatre building in 1985 by the Minchin family, with a cafe attached. Ron and Myrna bought the complex in 1988, slowly developing it into the five screen cinemas it is today. Ron and Myrna share a deep love for the movies that resonates into the care and attention they gave the Noosa 5 Cinemas during their 20 years of ownership. Unfortunately, the boom of television forced the closure of many cinemas and Ron found himself out of a job. But it wasn’t long until he landed a job in the lighting dome of the Melbourne Tivoli theatre - a job he absolutely loved. “That was exciting. I loved that job,” Ron said. “Some of the shows I saw 72 times and I enjoyed them just as much after 72 shows. In a live show, each night is different because something will happen, something can go wrong, something might go very well. It’s surprising.” Myrna’s love for the cinema was handed to her at birth, named after

The Stamfords’ love for customer service resonated in their operation of the Noosa 5 Cinemas where Myrna would spend hours preparing the movie programming so that there would be a movie available to suit everyone. Enjoying such success, Ron and Myrna built cinemas 4 and 5 in 1995 to create the cinemas we all use and love today. They may have since retired, but Ron and Myrna have truly created an iconic piece of history and entertainment through their love of the cinema. From the soggy viewing of American Quilt, to the ambitious expansions in a time when movies tickets were $4, the Stamfords have earned a place in the history of Noosa Shire and the hearts of the locals.

wild side Long-time local loves Noosa Born and bred Noosa local Kari Porter is delighted to once again work under the Noosa Council banner.
Although many friendships were made through amalgamation, Kari is happy to have Noosa back, and attributes the sense of community throughout Noosa as bringing about the de-amalgamation. Kari works as a Project Officer in the Transport area of Noosa Council but she began her Council career in the Town Planning section over 11 years ago. Prior to that she spent six years working in the ski fields, including a season in Canada, and many years conveyancing in local law firms. Kari is a long-time local: her parents owned the House of Bottles in the late 70s and early 80s. During her time in Town Planning, Kari feels fortunate to have worked under the recently retired former Director of Environment and Planning, Raul Weychardt. Kari now manages projects such as the Free Holiday Buses initiative, which is on of-
fer again over Easter (April 14-21), the Boreen Point Flexilink Service and the Council Cabs Services. “Most areas of Noosa are well serviced by public transport, so while the buses are free you can give them a go - leave the car at home and avoid the parking hassles! Kari said. Kari also promotes alternative and sustainable transport options for council staff. “Part of my role includes encouraging staff to travel sustainably to work by walking, cycling, carpooling or catching the bus. The pathway network around the Noosa area and the end-of-trip facilities provided at the Tewantin office makes this a pretty easy task. It helps for me, living a six-minute bike ride from work and having the luxury of riding along the beautiful Noosa River. Outside the office, Kari often walks along the local boardwalks, including the Noosa National Park. She also enjoys climbing local mountains, camping and making the most of Noosa’s community charm. “We are very blessed to live and work in such a beautiful location, she said.

Women REDRESSING THE BALANCE
It may be 2014 but women are still struggling to claim their share of the top jobs.
The need for more women in leadership roles is widely accepted, to the point that formal quotas to guarantee equal representation for women in top political and business echelons may be introduced. Women comprise 45.9 per cent of all employees in Australia but, according to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, they account for less than 20 per cent of the Australian ICT workforce. The lack of female representation at senior levels is even greater, according to professional services firm Deloitte. Some companies want to redress the imbalance, however. For example, Westpac has set an aspirational target of 50 per cent female representation within leadership roles by 2017. And there is a good chance they will succeed – because they have done it before. In 2010, Westpac set a target to increase the percentage of women in leadership roles from 33 per cent to 40 per cent by 2014, recognising the organisation would benefit from a more diverse pool of talent. Westpac achieved its target two years ahead of schedule by creating specific development programs for women and increasing their participation across all leadership programs. Westpac also recognised the need to change the culture of the workforce, reinforcing flexible work practices, including job sharing, grandparental leave and flexibility for childcare and elder care.

New CEO has plans for Noosa ISOBEL COLEMAN Noosa Hospital’s new CEO Jude Emmer has hit the ground running and loves every minute of it!
Now into her fourth week she told Noosa Today she felt very blessed to have such a great job, in such a great place. Jude brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role from her past positions within Ramsay Health Care, including Director of Clinical Services at Greenslopes Hospital in Brisbane; Director of Clinical Services at St George Private Hospital in Kogarah NSW, and as Chief Executive Officer at Mt Wilga Private Hospital in Hornsby, NSW. “We were very keen to return to Queensland so I was thrilled to accept this position,” she said. “Noosa Hospital is a great hospital and very much a part of the community. I want it to be bustling and appropriate for this community. “It’s already good but I do see lots
of opportunities to do more. We already offer a broad range of services but we may be able to bring in some more over time.” Ms Emmer reminded the community that although it is a private hospital, it also provides for public patients, particularly through its excellent emergency department. “Ramsay allocates a certain percentage of beds for the public so they are well catered for.” Ramsay Health Care will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year and now boasts 150 hospitals globally, 69 in Australia. And Noosa Hospital – the Shire’s biggest employer at around 400 - will celebrate its 15th birthday. On the average day, the hospital will admit 60 patients, treat 40 patients in the Emergency Medical Centre (EMC), undertake 25 operations, prepare over 700 meals and process over 5,000 pieces of paperwork.
I want it to be bustling and appropriate for this community.

Perfect for Swapping snow for the beach crafty mums If having children has stifled your creativity, local Lani Kenzler has the answer! The busy full-time mum of three has launched a free community group for busy mums – and grandmas can come, too. “I have lived in Noosa all my life. I was born here and now I am very blessed to be raising my children here in our special place,” Lani said. “This group, Creative Space, runs every Wednesday from 7pm-9pm and is open to all women but is especially aimed at busy mums who love to create but don’t get a chance to be creative due to the demands of having a family. “I wanted to join a similar group but couldn’t find one so I thought I would start my own! “The concept is to provide a regular time and space to be creative so Mum can leave the children at home with another carer and come out to create. This can be very enjoyable, rewarding and therapeutic.” Creative Space is BYO tools and materials and is not restricted to any one craft. The group will re-commence after the holidays, on Wednesday, April 23. To find out more email Lani at creativespacenoosa@gmail.com
From the time Swiss student Liam stepped off the plane in December he encountered changes. Coming from a harsh winter in Lucerne to Queensland’s hot summer was the first adjustment that Liam had to make, but one which he likes as he prefers the heat to the snow.
Liam, whose home language is Swiss-German, also speaks English and German and came to Sunshine Beach with his family to enable Dad to attend the English College. After attending his local school of 150 students, enrolling at Sunshine Beach State School
Selina, left, with brother Liam on the slide
with over 800 students left Liam amazed. However, Liam and Selina, his sister in Prep, settled quickly into their new classrooms. Liam said it was “strange to wear shoes in the classroom. At my old school we take our shoes off and wear slippers in the room.” For Liam spending time in Australia has been a wonderful experience. “The best part of school is that classroom time is only five hours long [as opposed to six in Switzerland] and we have more time to play with our friends as we don’t have to go home for lunch.” Selina’s favourite animal is the kangaroo which she patted at Australia Zoo. While Selina loves school in Australia she admitted that she misses her friends back at home.
Cooroy kids raise over $600 for drought relief When members of the student council at Cooroy State School heard about the plight of droughtaffected farmers and graziers, they decided to do something to help.
So they staged a Dress like a Farmer Day, where students were encouraged to dress up in their best farm gear and bring a gold coin donation to support drought relief. Principal Des Deighton said the school was a sea of look-a-like farmers. “The response from students and staff was terrific and many put a lot of thought into their outfits,” he said. “It shows what wonderful community-minded students and families we have here, many of whom themselves live on rural properties and are affected by the drought.” The students raised more than $600.
Rugby the winner There was an element of pomp and ceremony when Semiahmoo High School, touring from BC Canada, timed their visit to St Andrew’s with the official opening of the Secondary playing field.
With bagpipes to lead the players onto the field, followed by the National Anthems of both countries, the match that followed was fiercely fought but all in good spirit and sportsmanship.
Both teams showed great sportsmanship 1814-114

While some would say rugby was the winner on the day, St Andrew’s went down to the stronger visitors. Principal Chris Ivey said that “it was wonderful to welcome our guests to our official occasion.” “We know the boys really valued their time together from opposite sides of the world and I’m sure many friendships have been formed through this great opportunity.”

GOING FOR A SONG I was interested to read in Noosa Today that Patricia Peterson was now singing in a band to earn a living. I can only wish her well as she came onto the Noosa scene with a signature tune of ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’, and left with ‘Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye’. Who knows with the letters we are still receiving from her past supporters it could have been ‘We’ll meet again’. One never knows in today’s climate of politics and comedy.

FAREWELL OUTDOOR FUN This is the last letter written by Outdoor Fun. Today I have decided to end it all for I am terminally ill. It was long ago, too long, I last remembered the joy and happiness of the simple things in life. I have had a wonderful and healthy life. In fact, I have always had a very healthy life from an early age. It was so healthy it had to be restricted to ‘before the sun came down’. This beautiful healthy existence lasted hundreds of years, even thousands, for which I have lost count. My time continued to blossom right up until the advent of television. Whilst I was still very popular and had many supporters, the writing
was on the wall when video games arrived. This was my turning point for a once healthy and popular life, many of my supporters and friends began to abandon me. My health began to deteriorate further as bureaucrats began restricting and sanitising areas of play for me. And only now has the final tipping point come, where the ones who once enjoyed my company have deserted me and even encouraged my non-existence. Throughout my life and those many others who knew me, I hope I will be remembered for creating such valuable life experiences as making friends, exercising, building confidence, learning from mistakes, and enjoying nature. For those of us who have many great memories and stories about me, I will miss you. I do not wish for this to end and hope it would change. PS Don’t take away the Weyba swings. Simple signage to encourage respect for those who live nearby is all that is needed.

SERVICE SPOT ON Amanda Stevens’ opinion piece on the retail customer experience needing to appeal to local residents of Noosa, as well as visitors, is spot on. Having just returned from an extend-
ed visit to New Zealand I can certainly say that they are an envious benchmark to which Noosa’s retail and other service industries could well aspire. Our sports-mad friends seem to have their service levels attuned to customer needs and wants for both locals and visitors alike. No matter whether it was a shop, local diner, a five-star restaurant, a tourism adventure experience, a wine tasting or asking for directions we found the level of engagement to be quite extraordinary. In addition, towns and cities are very clean. Even the countryside is devoid of litter. It is almost spooky. Cr Jurisevic may well be able to pick up some pointers in his excellent efforts to clean up Noosa and our biosphere. For heaven’s sake, if the Kiwis can do it, why can’t we?
MICHAEL DONOVAN Noosa
TRY HARDER Yes Bruce, I think that most residents know that Noosa is part of the real world and far from perfect. The most important question is what do you, me and the rest of our fellow citizens do to make this imperfect place better? I personally am lacking but you have reminded me to try harder, thanks for that.

BIOSPHERE QUESTIONS It was an amazing insight to hear Carolyn Beaton’s NBL website statistics. 60,000+ unique visitors a week a quarter of a million people a month! And all unique visitors seeking what? To achieve this cost how much? So let us now hear the monthly running cost plus the investment to date on the website so the picture is complete. And just what are the 250,000 people per month looking for and asking for. Do they blog? Not that I can see. How does Carolyn explain the UNESCO report “Lessons From Biosphere Reserves” (24.06.2010) when comparing Google scores rated Noosa with a score of 3750 compared to Great Sandy of 83,500 (which if memory serves me was only just being recognised), Kosciuszko of 86,600, Macquarie Island of 96,900 even “unnamed” scored 4730. Now I agree it is an old report but even then there were claims as to performance and how the NBL website was to lead the way. 60,000 unique persons a week, a truly amazing result. That kind of traffic is worth a fortune, maybe Carolyn might tell us how it is being leveraged for the future of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve and being used to cover costs to run the NBL.
BRUCE CRESSWELL Noosaville
NOTHING TO LOSE? Re: Case Smit (NT 20/3). Case, when I go out into my real world, I am breathing in lethal toxic pollutants at street level from motor vehicles burning oil for fuel. The World Health Organisation’s Global Burden of Disease project has found urban outdoor air pollution, much of it from vehicles, kills about 1.3 million people a year. Car fumes contribute to coronary heart disease, which kills more than five times as many people as road accidents. Regardless of any IPCC reports or carbon dioxide levels, it cannot be denied that atmospheric pollution from all sources is killing and harming life on earth. So if we can encourage individuals, businesses and Governments to work together on reversing so called climate change, we will breath clean air on a healthier planet and at the same time supporting new industries and employment. Thanks to innovators developing electric cars, eg Tesla Motors and our own Australian Electric Vehicle Association, it will be sooner rather than later when we can go down a busy street of traffic and breathe easy. If you or someone else feels the itch to participate in climate change doubt mongering, stop and think about all the positives there are: there is nothing to lose except pollution!

Born and raised in Peregian Beach, Mark’s music and smooth vocals reflect the coastal-folk tunes that perfectly accompany the beachside lifestyle we all know and love. Mark had a stellar 2013, racking up an album release with Walking Through Walls and numerous performances at local festivals including the Big Pineapple Festival and the Caloundra Music Festival. Mark was also selected as a finalist at the QMusic Awards, plus he received several nominations at the Australian Independent Music Awards and finished the year with a New Zealand tour and live performance on
a New Zealand morning show. “I am completely thrilled by all these great opportunities and feel very grateful and blessed when I see people appreciating my music,” Mark said. Hailing from the Coast, Mark said he cherishes local gigs because they help him stay connected with the community. “I love to catch up and see all the local coast folk,” he said. “The increasing popularity of my music is very humbling and exciting. It really fuels the fire to keep writing and performing.” Mark said he will spend 2014 performing, writing, recording and planning a tour for the end of the year. You relax to Mark’s mellow tunes when he performs at Sunshine Beach Surf Club tomorrow night, from 6.30pm.

mers. I never rode the ski again at that beach. There was a problem of a different kind for girls who wanted to surf at Torquay. Outside the surf club was a dispiriting sign, ‘No Women Allowed Beyond This Point’. There was absolutely nowhere else to leave a board or ski overnight, and women were banned not only from becoming members but from taking one step onto the sand inside the fence! Eventually the captain of the club took pity on me and an arrangement was made whereby if I called out to him from well outside the fence and if he happened to hear me, he would come out and carry my ski inside to be stored with the skis and boards owned by men. To get it back next day I had to perform the same ritual. Somewhat like the Australia Club in Melbourne today where women are not allowed into the dining room unless there is a special occasion given by males and they are accompanied by one, women were only allowed into the

hallowed surf club for Saturday night dances. But rumours of decadent girls dancing in bare feet in scanty bikinis were enough to make moral mothers forbid daughters of 16 even to dream of going to such an event. So I never did. In the late fifties the local heroes were board and ski riders who won races at surf carnivals. Girls like me could daringly paint our toenails pink and go along to cheer champions like the late Vic Tantau and Peter Troy. But there was not one female competitor. Things have changed a bit in half a century. At 16 I would never have believed that I would live to see a woman, Layne Beachley, become World Surfing Champion seven times over. I bet no bloke ever said ‘getoutofit mole’ to her.

PASSINGS Two giants in their fields on either side of the Pacific passed on last Sunday. Hobie Alter, 80 when he died, opened the world’s first surf shop in Dana Point, California, 60 years ago, and it’s still there. But this turned out to be one of his lesser accomplishments in a life of extraordinary achievement. Hobie Surfboards was the
benchmark brand throughout the ‘60s, launching many a shaping career, and enabling its founder to create a large network of retail stores in California and Hawaii. Then in the late ‘60s, Hobie turned his love of an afternoon sail into a juggernaut when he designed a revolutionary lightweight catamaran called the Hobie 14. The rest is history, and sadly, so is its founder. Ian Frykberg was a beefy Kiwi rugby front rower who became a bloody good journalist, then reinvented himself as a television executive and, finally, as a sporting rights negotiator for the major leagues and the major networks. It was all the same to Frykers, just a game where you spoke softly and whacked them when they weren’t looking. We were together at the start in the Canberra political bureau of the Sydney Morning Herald, and then bumped bellies in various places over the decades. For a time he was the boss of Nine Sports and The Bulletin simultaneously, and I worked under him at both. “Can I buy you a beer after work?” became my code for, I want more money. Frykers would appear with two schooners in hand, plonk them down and say, “$10K more and that’s all your worth… until next time.” Too soon, old mate, and too sad.

It doesn’t help that he got back to his desk right on deadline, after a marvellous weekend surfing Angourie and fishing the Clarence with kids and grandsons. But what are old mates for, if not to help out in your hour of need, and the lovely Kristin Williamson, author, journalist, patron of the Noosa Long Weekend and all round good bloke, has stepped up to the plate as your guest surf columnist. Take it away, KW: In the mid 1950s, when surfie chicks sat all day on the beach minding the towels of their surfer boyfriends, I dared to save up and buy myself a 16-foot plywood surf ski. I rode it at Torquay, Anglesea and Lorne. I was almost 16, but not strong enough to carry the ski by myself, so a friend (Suzanne, at the front in the photo) and I half dragged it from the car park where we had been dropped, and she pushed from behind as I paddled out over the breaking waves. It was a thrill to get beyond the first line of breakers without falling off. Male surfboard riders were not encouraging. ‘Getoutofit mole!’ I tried to look nonchalant. When I made it out the back, I struggled to turn the long, unwieldy board towards the shore before a new wave could catch it sideways and fling it high into the air. If this happened I’d dive to the bottom and pray that it didn’t come down point first and kill me. But if I turned it successfully and paddled like fury to catch that huge rolling mass of water as it curled above me, I could ride like a Valkyrie all the way to the beach, leaning backwards, moving from side to side to steer with the paddle and yelling in exultation. ‘That ride must have thrilled everyone on the beach,’ said my loyal friend as we dragged the ski up to the dunes, removed the ‘bung’, struggled to stand it up to its full height and drained the water out of it. But it didn’t thrill the blokes. Not at all. Often one would deliberately cut me off on his longboard as I skied along the crest of a wave, and there would be a frantic attempt to swerve and miss him which mostly resulted in me being thrown off and my ski travelling fast and dangerously towards the swimmers close to shore. Once, at Lorne, my ski was confiscated by surf lifesavers because of this. I felt humiliated and was full of apologies for endangering swim-

Love orchids? Join the club! JOHN GREEN Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society was founded 30 years ago this year. The founding members chose an Orchid that grows locally as their floral emblem, Phaius tankervilliae pronounced (fay-us)(tanker-vil-ee-eye).
Phaius tankervilliae is commonly called the Swamp orchid because of its habitat. It grows in swampy areas on the East Coast of Australia, from northern parts of New South Wales up to the top of Queensland and into New Guinea. As its habitat suggests it is a terrestrial orchid and can be easily cultivated in a potting media of commercial Cymbidium
Mix and kept moist. Phaius tankervilliae flowers in the spring on tall stems up to 2m. The flowers are sequential so the plant has its beautiful bronze-coloured flowers for many weeks. The club is always looking for new members and we meet on the first Saturday of each month at Tinbeerwah Hall at 1.30pm. The club is a great way to make new
Phaius tankervilliae
friends and learn about these beautiful orchids.
On May 8 and 9 we will be holding a show in conjunction with Cooroy Fusion to showcase exotic orchids. There will also be plants for sale at reasonable prices. For more information contact me on 5483 2764. John will give a talk on Queensland’s floral emblem, Dendrobium bigibbum, at the club’s meeting this Saturday, April 5.
Men vs women: who wears the financial pants? It is the age old question: which gender controls the household finances? According to Mortgage Choice’s inaugural 2014 Money Survey, men and women are largely divided when it comes to answering this question and determining who manages the household finances.
The survey, which canvassed the opinions of more than 1,000 Australians, found 45.4 per cent of
respondents believe males control the household finances, while 47.4 per cent think women run the show and 7.2 per cent say ‘other’ (or both genders). Unsurprisingly, the majority of male respondents believe their gender controls the finances, with 76.0 per cent of them indicating that they dictate how the household money is spent. Similarly, 75.7 per cent of the females surveyed believe it is women who control the finances in their household. Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough said while it is
impossible to say with any surety which gender actually controls the finances, it is clear men and women handle their finances in very different ways. “Men tend to save a larger portion of their regular income, with 32.6 per cent of males indicating they save between 16 per cent and 30 per cent of their monthly pay check. By comparison, 50.3 per cent of women save less than 15 per cent of their regular income,” she said. But while men are seemingly better savers than women, the survey
found females keep better track of their finances. “Of all the women surveyed, almost 60 per cent say they track their day-to-day spending on a regular basis, reviewing their outgoings at least once a week. By comparison, a significantly smaller portion of men review their outgoings regularly, with 53 per cent tracking their expenses on a weekly basis,” Ms Darnbrough said. “Further, almost 84 per cent of women said they knew exactly how much debt they currently have, in comparison to 80.8 per cent of men.”

Feline daring? Try this look! If you love a smoky eye and you love a cat eye, there’s great news this season. For one of the hottest trends to emerge on the catwalk combines these two stunning looks.
A new take on an old favourite, the look is super dramatic and can be taken as
far as you dare! But instead of drawing the dark liner on top of the lid, like we used to, this look has the dark liner underneath the bottom lashes. If you prefer the classic look, go for a strong and skinny under-sweep. But if you’re more of a risk taker, try a twotoned approach and pair a charcoal shadow with a highlighter as well.
Discover the benefits of a Jessner Peel We all remember SATC Samantha Jones’s untimely peel right before Carrie’s book launch - “Honey I’ve had a little something done!” - as she presents in mourning garb, including veil, with a face rivaling any snake during shedding season!
What we didn’t see was Samantha’s new fresh-faced dewy complex-
ion post peel which would have us sprinting to our nearest and trusted Dermal Clinician. Chemical peels are also commonly referred to as the lunchtime peel, as they can be performed in under an hour with very little obvious signs of treatment, albeit a little redness. They provide a quick, efficient and cost effective treatment. And used progressively, they can be more
effective than six months’ worth of counter creams. Riverside Beauty’s new Dermal Clinician, Susan Priestley, said one of the most effective chemical peels, the Jessner Peel, is now available at the salon. The job of a chemical peel is to exfoliate and to kickstart the body into repair response, accelerating epidermal renewal and collagen formation. The Jessner Peel is a superficial me-
dium depth chemical peel that has been cosmetically used for over 30 years and delivers a more thorough peeling mechanism, due to the combination of AHAs and BHAs. The depth of peeling is controlled by layering the applications of the Jessner Peel and the outcome is based on client skin type and condition and their desired outcomes. If you are concerned about lines, uneven skin tone, the Jessner Peel is ideal and will also treat skin types
that suffer from acne, congestion, sun damage and pigmentation. Good planning will save you the post peel trauma and embarrassment Samantha Jones suffered, so try and schedule your peel midweek so the weekend can be spent snake-like and you can face the new week with your new face! Contact Riverside Beauty on 5449 9744 to discover how a Jessner Peel can work for you.

For starters, there are three new pizza breads added to the menu: Bacon, Chilli and Basil, Mixed Mushroom and Rocket, plus Chicken Tandoori. The new Onion Bhaji on the entrée menu provides a delightful combination of Indian spices with onion and is served with house-made dipping sauce. While, the Salt and Pepper Calamari entrée with a basil mayonnaise is cooked to perfection and has a great balance of flavours that you’re sure to enjoy.
The menu is on-trend offering Quinoa in a warm salad with haloumi, roasted peppers, mushroom, sweet potato, Spanish onion, cherry tomatoes and rocket dressed with a balsamic mayonnaise dressing. Simply add fish or chicken for a filling main meal. The pasta menu has also been expanded, with a choice of penne, fettuccine, linguine, gnocchi or gluten-free pasta topped with your choice of six mouth-watering sauces, including the newly added Australian Prawns, Chilli, Chorizo and Bacon sauce. New extension for Miss Moneypenny’s Having swept onto the Noosa scene only months ago, Miss Moneypenny’s has now unveiled a new renovation that will see you truly dining on Hastings Street.
A new Footpath Bar reaches onto the famous street offering comfortable seating and all day dining, all presented in a perfectly designed social setting, right on Hastings Street.
Miss Moneypenny’s owner Ben Walsh said the bar-style drink/dining design is unique to Hastings Street, and resembles the sidewalk-style bars of the bohemian capital of New York, Greenwhich Village. Described as a “social, drink or dine bar”, the new extension is a testament to the forward thinking of the newest kid on the block. ENCORE CANCER PROGRAM COMING TO NOOSA The YWCA Encore program – which has been operating in Australia for over 30 years - will be held at two locations on the Sunshine Coast this year.
Encore is an innovative and gentle exercise program meeting the exercise and support needs of women recovering from breast cancer surgery to help them regain control of their lives in a nurturing and supportive environment completely free-of-charge. Dedicated YWCA Queensland Encore Program Coordinator, Pia Hughes, is running a program in Noosa from April 28 until June 17, each Tuesday from 1pm until 3pm. A second program will take place in Kawana. The program relies solely on the fundraising of the program coordinators, through donations from the community, to ensure it remains a completely free program for women of any age who have had breast cancer surgery at any time in their lives. The eight-week program compliments the mainstream treatment of breast cancer. It incorporates gentle floor and hydrotherapy exercises and is specifically designed to improve movement, flexibility and strength after breast cancer surgery – relieving discomfort associated with surgery and treatment. It helps to reduce the potential risk of lymphoedema and can assist in the management of lymphoedema. The sessions also provide a time and a space for relaxation, information sharing and discussion amongst women who have been through similar experiences. The benefits of the YWCA Encore program are widely recognised throughout the medical community - an increasing body of worldwide research is showing that physical activity is of both biological and psychological benefit for breast cancer survivors. Studies have shown that exercise programs for most cancer survivors in general can reduce anxiety and depression, improve mood, boost self esteem and reduce symptoms of fatigue. Participation is by enrolment only, and medical approval is required. For more information, to donate or enrol, call Matilda Ivin-Todd on 3230 3406.

NOOSA TODAY NRL WEEKLY REVIEW PETER MCGREGOR
Another frustrating round of tipping last weekend. This is a very tight comp this season with the purest suffering from over analysing each game and looking as if they know nothing of the game as the results are shown.
I was talking to a young fella the other day and he is leading his family tipping competition. His father just shakes his head as to how he selects his teams. His average on the system he plays is 6.5 per round. Not bad at all and I would dearly love to take that. The Rabbits look anything but a threat, the Storm and Dragons both suffered their first defeats, the Knights bounced back while the Broncos, Sea Eagles, Bulldogs and Eels look very good. On Friday night the Roosters will try and bounce back against a game Bulldogs and this should really test the Roosters. The Roosters seem to have lost their way a little bit while the Bulldogs played some enterprising footy against the Storm last Saturday in a rain-soaked game in Perth. A tough one this one but without much confidence I’ll tip the Roosters by 4. The other Friday night should

the Warriors in what is a make or break for the Sharks. I am still not sold on the Warriors but should prove too strong for the Sharks. Warriors by 12. The Panthers will try and right the ship against the impressive Raiders at Penrith Park. The Raiders are a hard team to gauge as their form fluctuates too much for my liking. Penrith at home by 10. The final game sees the Dragons and Rabbitohs battle it out in Dragon territory and the way the Rabbits are playing I just can’t pick them. Dragons by 6. On Sunday the Storm host the Titans and I think at home the Storm will be too tough. Cameron Smith should be right for this match as they missed him last weekend. Storm by 16. The improving Tigers host the Manly Sea Eagles and I just can’t see the Tigers causing an upset here. Manly are just too good. Manly by 12. On Monday night football the Cowboys will play host to the Knights. Hard one this one as both sides mix their form and are frustrating for tipster. At home I will select the Cowboys by 10. Well, they are the tips for this weekend. If you want more than a pass mark I suggest you go against me. Until next week, happy tipping.... ‘Remember, Rugby League football, the greatest game of all.’

Tigers prevail in tough first round slog TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS
Noosa Tigers opened their 2014 season with a 27-point victory over a very resilient Nambour in sauna-like conditions at Palmwoods last Saturday. It was a physical opening stanza with the umpire letting things go and only a few points separating the sides at the first break.
Nambour were skilfully cre-
ating problems for the Tigers out wide but up forward Welch and Duke looked to be too strong one-on-one for their opponents. The second quarter was much the same with Noosa taking a 9-point lead at half-time. Nathan Winter was dominant in the midfield as was young Jai Fitzpatrick on his wing, while Hughson and Welch were very lively up forward. In fact, it did look like the Noosa boys were playing only their first game together, although taking nothing away from Nambour, who continually used the ball well, especially by foot. As players started to wilt in the heat it was obvious that the more experienced Noosa side were starting to get their hands on the footy more.
New recruit Dillon Dempsey showed some promising signs as did big Zac Mcdonald and the evergreen Duke boys, helping the likes of Winter, Hughson, Fitzpatrick and Welsh get the Tigers over the line. In fact special mention also to Lou Fary who was outstanding on the last line of defence in the final half. Eventually it was the more fancied Tigers who came out on top by 27 points. Vice captain Welch kicked 3 majors with Angel Duke bagging 2 with Hughson, Winter, Fitzpatrick and Dempsey the best of a pretty good collective effort. Senior coach James Gellie commended his boys’ efforts, saying their “never give up attitude and willingness to keep grinding away in
tough conditions” led to the win. The Reserves had a fantastic 98-point victory with coach Rod Purvis chuffed at what he saw. “It wasn’t just the result but the way we achieved it. There was just a good vibe among the boys today and it’s a great first up win for the club,” he said. A massive weekend coming up with the Noosa Tigers first home game at their Weyba Rd headquarters versing Kedron, a club we have not played against since the pre-season of 1993. Our first of many President’s Lunches kicks off at the clubrooms from midday with sports presenter and funny man Steve Haddan our opening guest. Will be a great afternoon so don’t miss it! Go Tigers!
Mixed bag for juniors RICHARD MURRIHY The rain cleared in time for footy this week and three teams had it easy with a bye.
The 18 Girls had their first game and had a loss. Best players: C Clarke, T Healey, C McDonald, M Venn, M Findlay.
The 15 Girls took a loss, too, for the second week in a row but they put in a solid effort. Best players: T Raeburn, G Schroeder, H Strelow, C Lewis-Boyer. 14 Blue and the 16s both had a week off so this left 14 Gold to go two from two in another strong performance. Goal-kick-
ers were D Deans 3, F O’Toole 3, J Beeson 2, J Perry 2, P Broman 2, L Kennedy, W O’Dwyer. Best players N Evans, L Kennedy, F O’Toole. 12 Blues put their first win on the board with a good team effort. Goal-kickers: R Marshall 4, A Grey 3, J Senn 2, O Dickson.
ENJOY A LOCAL GAME OF AUSSIE RULES. GO TIGES!
Best players: J Birmingham, K Haddow, J Senn, J Loorham, F Ross, C Bowes. 11 Blue had a win while 11 Gold went down in a close one to Kawana. This week sees us have a few at home while some travel to Bribie Island.

Accolades for softballers RICHARD MURRIHY With grand finals and presentations out of the way Dodgers have finally wrapped up the season. The 17s came second, the 15s were first and fourth, and the 13s were third overall – not a bad result. Jordan Csabi and Noosa Little Athletics coach Mick Hooper celebrate Jordan’s golden performance
Noosa athlete claims gold at Nationals MICHELLE MOORE Fleet-footed athlete Jordan Csabi has been dubbed Little Athletics Noosa’s new ‘prince of speed’, having claimed gold in the 200m sprint at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney, and gold in both the 200m and 100m sprints at the IGA Little Athletics Queensland State Championships held in Cairns.
“Winning gold in both the 100m and 200m at the IGA State Championships was definitely a very happy moment for me,” said Jordan. “However, the biggest boost to my confidence was winning gold in the 200m at the Australian Junior Championships. I wasn’t expecting to win and was just hoping to improve on the
previous year’s result.” Although both championships were held within a week of each other, this did not prove to be a handicap for the 16-year old. Jordan ran a personal best time of 21.55 seconds to win the 200m at the Australian Junior Championships, while his win in the 200m at the IGA State Championships in a time of 22.27 seconds set a new state record. “To be able to get to this point in my career so far has meant sticking to a very strict training routine. It’s also meant a lot of commitment from me, not only to athletics, but also to the team of people at Little Athletics Noosa who have coached and trained me,” said Jordan. “I hope to qualify for the World Junior Athletics Championships in a couple of years’ time, although my long-term goal is definitely to qualify for the Olympics. I think it’s every athletes dream.”
To all the players who got recognised at the Noosa presentation congratulations, as the awards were well shared between all teams that played this year.
To the players who picked up awards on Sunday at the Dodgers’ finale, well done and I hope we see you all later in the year for next season. And for those Dodgers who this weekend go to Redcliffe and Toowoomba, we wish you well. And then there are those who will front up all winter playing as a combined Noosa side at Caboolture. Hopefully they can pick up a petrol company sponsor! So hope all the kids enjoyed the year and we all say thanks to Gordo and the committee at Noosa for a wonderful season.
No sure bet as teams qualify Noosa Table Tennis Club’s qualifying rounds are now complete and the top four teams appear more and more even. It would be brave to single out a likely winner, as past finals have proved notoriously unpredictable!
Blizzard (B Brown, C Barry, Z Roche) def Whirlwind (A Munro, D Brown, J Mikkelson) 7/5. Bill continued his star role as captain of a very solid outfit. Tornadoes (B Blakemore, M Clarke, B Muller) def Tsunami (R Wheller, C Galea, M Duncan) 10/2. A convincing win here by a team showing late form to
snatch fourth spot in the semis. Cyclones (R Gore, J Campbell, L Gore) def Snowstorm (S Ciercan, O Estraviz, S Campbell) 8/4. Unfortunately, Cyclones had Roger on the sidelines for half the season as they demonstrated their strength by rolling the team touted early as grand final contenders. Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm and we also have a practise session on Mondays from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. All sessions are held at the Bicentennial Centre, Sunshine beach. Phone 5474 5526 for further information.

Lions’ roar more potent than Snakes’ bite BRIAN STOCKWELL At the last meeting between Noosa Lions and the Woombye Snakes in the Johnny Warren knock-out competition the sides couldn’t be separated after extra time.
It looked like Saturday night’s game was heading for a similar ending with a good home crowd urging the Madill Motor Group Noosa Lions
BOATIES WARNING With school holidays just around the corner, Noosa Today ask all boaties, local and visiting, to take care on Noosa bar.
An incident on Saturday saw the Coast Guard go to the rescue of a charter boat, stuck on a sand bank while coming back in over the bar. Within minutes the Coast Guard vessel was also aground, with the water just ankle deep. Sunday saw lifesavers and the Coast Guard again working together to help boaties safely cross the bar. Read more in Between the Flags on page 40. For more information contact the Coast Guard on 5474 3695.
Premier team on against a determined Woombye side. It was a torrid affair in oppressive heat and humidity with a lot of attacking flair from both sides going unrewarded by some great goalkeeping. The score remained locked at nil at half-time. Noosa Lions dominated possession and field position in the second half, with strikers Alex Barlow and Matt Thomson asking numerous questions of the Woombye defence.
The game turned shortly after veteran defender Michael Williams made an aggressive attack to the forward line putting Woombye’s defensive structure into disarray. Super-sub Aaron Waters scored the opening goal for Noosa in the 72nd minute, shortly after his injection into the game in a great tactical move by the coach. Aaron ran on to a brilliantly crafted through-ball from Captain
Ben Cahn and deftly struck the ball around the keeper. Woombye was fearless in their pursuit of a leveller causing one Noosa wag to suggest that, considering it was Earth Hour, we should turn off the lights. Anxieties were however, pacified minutes later, when former Golden Boot winner, Matt Thomson, received a peach of a pass inside the box from Dan Upton which he promptly converted into Noosa’s sec-
ond goal, cementing the win. It was a local derby for the Senior Women with Noosa’s Lions White coming up against Cooroora. An impressive strike from Rebecca Whisker saw Noosa go one up early in the game, a blow Cooroora was unable to recover from. Noosa came out victors with a comfortable 5-0 victory at the end of the day, but the Cooroy girls were seen to be enjoying themselves well after the match had ended.
Warrigals left wanting after Pirates’ onslaught NATHAN MCLEAN Noosa Pirates A Grade and Reserve Grade made the tough road trip to Bribie Island at the weekend. After last week’s large injury toll and players away due to work commitments the Pirates’ depth was always going to be tested against the Warrigals.
A Grade received a boost with the return of Falcons Q cup player Mboya Adams and the inclusion of experienced prop Josh Adams from Brisbane. These two boys laid a great platform with Pirates back rowers Mitch Brockwell and Brock Dalgiesh testing Bribie’s edge defence all night. Captain Coach Liam Anlezark, out this week due to injury, said: “The boys did what I asked of them, they dominated the field position and con-
trolled the possession well. The side showed a lot of grit to knock over this committed Bribie side. I thought Mboya was really strong and Ash Black and Louis Turnbell steered the ship around well.” A Grade wrapped up a 38-12 win over the spirited Bribie boys. Big thanks must go out to Kenny, Ivan, Ryan, Zahny and Bull who all backed up from Reggies. Reserve Grade played in soaring temperatures again this week. Without captain-coach Gus Stewart and others missing due to injury, it was unknown how the boys would respond after last week’s draining game against the Sharks. But true to the Pirates’ spirit the boys banded together and put a very handy side out against the Warrigals. There is a great spirit in this group of blokes who just keep turning up week in, week out for each other.
Kenny once again showed he has the magic and Ivan impressed with his first hit out for Noosa. The boys, who haven’t had the same side on the park for all five games this year, took a while to get out of the blocks. Once the halves started to combine our forwards laid a great platform for the backs to do the rest. Trent Heathwood and Ash Smith were outstanding again and the halves Mitch and Chester worked well together to steer the Pirate ship around. Kenny once again showed he has the magic and Ivan impressed with his first hit out for Noosa. Wallsy nailed his conversions from all around
the park to end up with 5 from 5 and secured a strong 30-8 win for the Blue and Gold. A Grade has a tough game against Caboolture this Saturday night. The Snakes are always a tough away game but with some strength back in the forward pack and some clear weather ahead for training, coach Liam is confident the boys can rattle those snakes. The Reggies are sitting clear second on the ladder now and look forward to their top-of-the-table clash against Caboolture this Saturday. The U18s will be looking to test their side out against a strong Caboolture outfit after having last week off. A players/supporters bus will be heading down the highway this Saturday night. For anyone interested in joining us to support the boys and enjoy some festivities on the way home, please contact the club on 5447 1366 or email noosapirates@bigpond.com

Although performing extremely well with a great effort by all players Noosa went down 4-2. Nora Aubineau used her amazing speed, constantly attacking and tackling for the ball. Flynn Sperlich and Jordy Gartrell scored while Aiden Hawke was named Player of the Match for his rock solid performance in defence.

Around the greens COOROY BOWLS CLUB The rain certainly put a dampener on things this week with many games cancelled. It did stay fine for Saturday’s Hinterland Challenge against Mapleton however, even though thunder rumbled around the ridges. The Ladies Pairs had a win while the Triples were not strong enough. The results gave us a draw so we finalised the competition coming second place overall. Not bad for a small club who has been battling with exterior distractions. Well done ladies! Tuesday Jackpot pairs managed only one game but the Jackpot did go off this week! J White and B Bottomley were the lucky winners. A McGrath and D Hateley-James won the day. The first round of the ladies pairs was played on very heavy greens on Sunday afternoon. Y Pattinson and M Bottomley go into the finals. J Ainscough and L Hateley-James came back from behind and only went down by 2 points. We had the opportunity to play a few bowls and enjoy a BBQ dinner on Sunday evening. D Allisone and A Lerch were Players of the Month. The new ‘owner to be’ made himself known to the players and got to know what a dedicated crew we are. It was a very pleasant way to end a good week.

TEWANTIN BOWLS CLUB Congratulations to our men’s Silver Super Challenge
team on finishing first in their section. They will host the sectional play-offs on Saturday, April 5 and will play the winner of the first play-off between Bribie Island and Club Kawana, which commences at 9am. Our play-off is scheduled to start at 1pm. All club members and visitors are invited to support the Silver team at Tewantin Noosa on this historic occasion. Well done to all concerned! Two of our club members, John Dawson and Ron Somerville have added further laurels to their bowling resumes. John has been elected by all the districts in Queensland as the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Bowls Queensland, while Ron has again been appointed State match co-coordinator for Bowls Queensland. This recognition is well deserved. The men’s and ladies’ championships pairs are well underway. The men’s quarter finals and semi-finals will be played on Sunday. The ladies have reached the final with one semi still to be played due to the wet weather. The club’s free coaching for new and current bowlers is still being held each Saturday at 9am with dedicated coaches available each day. Call the club on 5449 7155 for further information. Dates to remember are Sunday, April 27 at 8.15am for the $500 Breakfast Men’s Pairs and Thursday, June 19 at 8.30am for the Ladies’ Fiesta Fours, sponsored by Laguna Estate, Noosa.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB Three club championship finals are set down for next Sunday at Noosa Heads. The ladies pairs title will be decided in a clash between the Jan Burkitt-Carol Studley team and the Judith Boakes-Jan Beckett pair. The men’s pairs match will pit the current title holders Shane Burke and Ross Ward against previous winners Ray McComb and Les James. In the men’s C-singles final Nick Gelavis will play Fabio Cantori. All matches will start at 1pm. Following the bowls, at about 4pm, the annual Golden Bowl get-together will start. This good-fun social event marks the end of the Super Challenge season with some fine food and drinks and some award presentations for our players and supporters. It’s a really big few days at Noosa, starting on Saturday with a visit from the Saints and Sinners who will bring 48 bowlers. On Monday we have the April edition of the Noosa 1500 Open Pairs which has attracted a capacity field of 48 teams from up and down the Coast. We are sad to report the death, after a short illness, of Graeme Austin, who was a valued member of Noosa Heads Bowls Club as player, umpire, and director on our Board of Management. Sympathy goes to Deb Austin, our current ladies champion, and family.

Old boys deliver the goods! The Cooper-Finlay Cup has been played between Over 60s cricketers from New South Wales and Queensland since 2007.
Kevin Finlay NSW and Lew Cooper Qld initiated the first interstate challenge which featured one over 60s match at Tenderfield in 2008. Since then the Cup Challenge has grown to its current format, which features a 5 Team
Challenge, now an Over 70s team. The Challenge is held over two days. Cooroibah’s Phil Drescher and local real estate agent Ron Davey played for Queensland Country 1 against NSW Country with Qld winning the first match 177 to NSW 176. The following day they played NSW City 1 with Qld winning that match as well, 166 to 129. Phil was voted Best Player for both games for Qld country 1.

Dolphins try hard and claim points JOE JURISEVIC The final development round at Dolphin Oval managed to go ahead despite the rain late last week, although matches at Eumundi had to be cancelled and some teams were given an early holiday break as a result. Matches will resume with the start of the competition proper after the Easter break on April 26.
U6 Reds 60 def SCGS 55: Quality rugby flowed on the Dolphins’ home turf as a flood of tries were dotted down in a high scoring match. Harry, 5 tries, Conor, 3 and Charlie again bamboozled the opposition defence. Zac scored a memorable try on debut. Angus, Sterling, Jax and Jaxon all supported strongly while Manu and Darcy were ferocious defending the line. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Zac Sammut
U6 Noosa Fins 35 def Caloundra 30: What a game from the little U6 Fins. They’re improving rapidly after just three weeks. Tries to Rory, George, Angus and Myles with great runs from Brendon and Noah. The support from Phoenix, Jackson, Julian and Henry kept Caloundra at bay. U7 Noosa 35 def Caloundra 30: Noosa dominated the game for the majority with Caloundra clawing their way back in the second half. Jack Dudgeon scored 2 tries; Brandon Gesell had his usual hunger for the ball, darting and weaving scoring 2 tries; Charlie Lambert remained impressive for his speed and unstoppable step, scoring 1 try, and Thomas Russell played well in both attack and defence scoring 1 try. Dominos Pizza Player of the Match was Kane Shedlock U8 Noosa Blues 40 def U8 SCGS 5: This was another workman-like performance by the young Noosa Blues. There was hard defence right

the boys is a very tight game. Coming back from 3 tries to two down, the boys showed their superior defensive and attacking capabilities to finish over the top of a well drilled Grammar. U9 Noosa Fins 50 def Caloundra 20: It looked easy, but it wasn’t. We’re playing like a team and backing each other up. Jackson crossed 4 times, Andrew 3, Fynn, Hunter and Tane 1 each. U10 Noosa Fins 7 - Caloundra 31: The try score was 5-1 to the visitors but that doesn’t accurately reflect how tough and fiercely competitive we were. The Fins battled impressively throughout the game but will feel disappointed that they didn’t do themselves justice by gifting two tries to Caloundra. U13 Noosa Reds 45 def Caloundra Lighthouse 7: Tries by Tom Payne, Hayden Lamsden, Tavita Roma, Flynn Enright, Liam Manssen and convs by Tom Payne and Yvahn Allsworth.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE
No major incidents were reported last weekend by Sunshine Beach or Peregian. However, on Sunday morning, Patrol 14 at Noosa Main Beach was required to send IRB patrols to the mouth of Noosa River as a backup team when it was reported that heavy sand banks and a very low tide made entry into the river virtually impossible. At one stage some
To add to their concern a heavy storm warning was received. Back on Main Beach, as per regulations, patrol members were forced to close the bathing area due to lightening. These conditions lasted only a short time and after 40 minutes the beach was again open. Our beachgoers must understand that when storms are in the region and heavy lightning prevails the patrols have a legal right to close their beaches as a safety measure. This is now part of Work Place Health and Safety regulations and our surf clubs in the State are following these to the letter. Back at the river mouth with the
approaching storm and the change of tide giving boat operators more water over the sandbanks, they began their entry. Under the watchful eye of the Coast Guard plus the backup teams of IRB and Wave Runner 19 Rescue Ski, all got safely over the banks. This was a good example of the safety measures now in place for craft operators wishing to cross the bar. The team work and radio communication that exists between our Coast Guard and Noosa Surf Club is tops. With the three tower system on our stretch of beach, the bar tower manned by Coast Guard, and the other two being manned by lifeguards and lifesavers, we at Noosa have the only beach safety observation system of its type in Australia.
Another incident supporting this occurred when Coast Guard Tower observed a kayak paddler in trouble in the bar. The kayak overturned and when the tower was unable to see the paddler they immediately notified the lifesaver patrols. Luckily the jet rescue found the paddler washed up on North Shore alive and well. But this again highlights the teamwork and response time that we now have in place. With every passing season the important role being played by our IRB teams becomes more apparent and demanding. Apart from the Noosa Bar our other area of concern is Alexandria Bay. With no patrols and isolated, this devil’s playground is closer to the club at Sunshine Beach and it

is their IRB teams that are first off the mark in an emergency. Under the leadership of club captain Scott Summers, all rescue teams have maintained a very high standard. “We have recently done a complete overhaul of all our IRB equipment,” said Summers, “and the findings tell us that we are urgently in need of two new motors. With a basic cost of $5,500 each we are eager to talk to any perspective sponsors. With the increasing workload this must get top priority.” This week teams from Noosa and Sunshine are in Perth to compete in the Australian Titles and with a team of 33 competitors and officials representing Sunshine and 75 competing for Noosa we wish them every success.
