Strong population growth requires housing supply strategy A clear and strategic focus on housing supply policy is needed from all levels of Government, according to the Housing Industry Australia. Demographic statistics released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) last week, showing a strong population growth, imply the continuation of strong demographic demand for housing, said the Housing Industry of Australia (HIA). HIA economist Geordan Murray said the figures show Australia’s population grew by just over 100,000 people in the September quarter for 2013, a relatively strong annual growth of 1.8 per cent. While the natural increase in population (births minus deaths) added 164,428 people in the year to September 2013, which represented an increase of 2.9 per cent over the corresponding period a year earlier and contributed 0.7 percentage points to the overall annual population growth. Additionally, overseas migration increased by 1.0 per cent in the year to September 2013 to 241,018. This element of population growth contributed 1.1 percentage points to the overall annual population growth.

“We have a situation where the importance of migration in securing the nation’s future economic prosperity is widely, and appropriately, acknowledged. It is vital that the implications of stronger population growth for housing demand are reflected in a clear and strategic focus on housing supply policy from all levels of government,” Mr Murray said.
