FOOTY’S shepherd could go the way of the bump, Geelong coach Chris Scott warned this week. Taylor Hunt’s one-match suspension for an accidental head-clash while shepherding against Brisbane left Scott unsure how to avoid further suspensions for players performing an “inherent” part of the game, he said. Scott kicked off a wider football-community debate on the future of the shepherd at his Tuesday media conference. The Cats accepted Hunt’s suspension because the odds were “pretty much
stacked against” him, Scott said. “It appears that the way it’s adjudicated now (is) that if you go to block an opposition player, even though you have no alternative, you’re liable for any head clash,” he said. “We’re going to have to make sure we talk to the right people and understand the rule as well as possible and instruct the players from there. “We think Taylor did everything he possibly could to avoid breaking the rules and yet in some way he’s been penalised for bad luck. “We’re not here to complain about that.
Our obligation is to make sure we understand the interpretation as well as possible and then give the players the guidance,” Scott said. “We need to get some advice from the people that have implemented the rules because, clearly, I think everyone would agree shepherding is an inherent part of the game and we expect our players to protect the ball-carrier. “Clearly what they’re saying now is that if there’s an accidental clash of heads the player shepherding is responsible. “It’s a debate the wider football community should have.”

Falcons talent manager Michael Turner sympathised with Scott’s frustration. “We face the same situations. I can certainly understand what he’s saying. “At the Falcons we keep an eye on the rules and the rule changes all the time. We coach them to protect the ball carrier and we’ll never change that,” he said. “Players are instructed to block and protect their teammate to allow him time to make a good decision,” Turner said. “To prepare, we do a lot of coaching on computer and the same vision, so it affects us just the same.” Cats’ Pie pressure, Indy Sport, page 34

STRANGER things might have been found around Ford’s North Geelong factory, like resident foxes, but the latest arrival was one out of the box. It was a black, hairless, mummified kangaroo in the basement, which, according to insiders, found its way in but not out. A sad way to go but, regrettably, hardly the only casualty at Ford just now.
QUITE a series of skid marks is collecting around Western Beach Rd’s pedestrian crossing near Ginn St. Joggers have forgotten the road-safety ditty: stop at the kerb, look both ways and walk across the road – don’t run! Even at 50km/h stopping a vehicle in time is difficult when a jogger appears without warning. With all the near-misses, a few joggers are probably producing skid marks as well.

Firm finalises Alcoa contract
Pot luck’s over By NOEL MURPHY
1125269-CB13-14
ANOTHER era has ended for Geelong manufacturing with delivery of the last pot manufactured for Alcoa’s Point Henry smelter. The final heavy steel container left Brockman Engineering at Corio on the back of an oversize truck bearing the painted message ‘Thanks Alcoa’ after decades of supplying the aluminium-maker. Brockman Engineering is one of the more obvious indirect victims of the impending Alcoa closure. Employee Peter Duffy said the end of the smelter pot contract was an emotional crossroad for staff.
ALL OVER: The final smelter pot begins it’s journey to Point Henry. “I’ve worked here on and off since 1981. All these trucks and drivers have been coming in once or twice a week, cutting up, repairing or taking new pots to Alcoa,” he said. “In recent times Alcoa’s not
been replacing (the pots) as much as they were in the past and operating at just half or even a third. “It’s a bid sad the last one’s gone kind of unnoticed. It’s good to know we did such a good job for them, people doing those jobs here have taken pride in their work.” Alcoa remained tight-lipped about details for the Point Henry closure and the site’s remediation. “The smelter is on track to close in August,” Alcoa spokesperson Nichola Holgate told the Independent. “Alcoa has a well-established decommissioning process, the details of which we shall be working through in the coming months.”

$100m fund in ‘delay’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $100 MILLION automotive rescue fund targeting Geelong is running late, proponents have conceded. Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the scheme to help regions overcome job losses in December. Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson and Geelong businessman Frank Costa were included on a panel advising the fund, meeting for the first time in January. Mr Costa was unable to explain the delay.
“I don’t know why it is taking a bit longer than anticipated,” he said. “The Government faces a challenge because of the huge demand on funds from many sources, so they’ve got to be careful about what they do and how they do it. “I can say the will of the Government was positive about Geelong and Adelaide and supporting companies losing employees, both large and small,” Mr Costa said. “The Government is keen to make sure the money goes to the greatest area of need where there are genu-
ine cases of people with things like mortgage problems and no suitable replacement jobs.” The Independent reported in February that Prime Minister Tony Abbott had flagged “some quite exciting developments” for Geelong. “Early in March we’ll have some announcements to make and then in the build up to the budget there’ll be further announcements to make,” he said. Earlier this year Ms Henderson raised “an imminent need” to use the $100 million fund for re-skilling and
business investment in the region. “In my view, our government needs to consider extending or bringing forward our growth fund ... as a way of providing urgent regional assistance.” Canberra and Victoria have committed $60 million and $12 million to the fund respectively but Ms Henderson rejected reports this week the states and car makers were not contributing. She said fund details would be announced in “coming weeks”. Geelong “featured prominently” in a review of funding applications, she said.
In brief Gun threat A ROBBER threatened a worker with a gun to steal cigarettes from a Corio milk bar on Tuesday night, according to police. Victoria Police said the robber jumped a counter during the incident but escaped before officers in a helicopter could catch him.
Bollard hunt A RARE timber is the target of a search to help restore dozens of Geelong’s iconic waterfront bollards, council has revealed. Cr Michelle Heagney said City Hall needed stocks of “relatively hard to find” turpentine timber for the works on 48 bollards, two of which require full replacement.
Eggs cleared EGGS blamed for a food-poisoning outbreak at Torquay have secured an all-clear from authorities. Department of Health lifted a warning on products from Green Eggs farm after more than 200 customers were sick from eating food containing raw egg.
Gallery cash
A $100,000 grant for Geelong Gallery to draw up expansion plans follows revelations it wants to occupy part of the city’s new library and heritage centre. State Government confirmed the funding last Friday after the Independent revealed that the gallery wanted 220 square metres of the redeveloped library and heritage centre’s ground floor.
Beach talks PUBLIC talks on restoring St Leonards’ beach will begin next week, State Government has announced. Government officers will conduct a community workshop on Thursday to discuss potential works.

standing water quality issues”. VRFish chairman Russell Conway said authorities must improve their management of the river. A 2012 Corangamite Catchment Management Authority report said opening the estuary would reduce the impact of acidic events but “nothing has been acted upon,” Mr Conway said. Previous authorities had conducted artificial openings of the river after careful consideration of environmental issues, he said. “We’re of the view that this system warrants special consideration and an urgent plan needs to be developed in consultation with fishers and other stakeholders for the betterment of the river and associated fishing businesses.”

We hope to have 300 girls playing under-11 this year.” Annabelle Connors and Camilla Sculley agreed playing against other girls was more enjoyable. “We like to rotate positions so we get to play forward or midfield and in defence,” Annabelle said. “We like to have fun and learn as we go,” Camilla said.

THE number of girls playing the round ball game in Geelong is set to double as the popularity of girls-only teams grows. Football Geelong development officer Foddy Kyprian said girls aged 11 years and under were increasingly keen to pull on soccer boots. “Last year for the first time Geelong introduced girls-only teams for the under-12s as we received feedback that girls want to play against girls,” he said.
“Some of the clubs were a little hesitant but it has been such a success. We’re ecstatic at the results and plan to expand it significantly.” Geelong is divided into a northern hub, with three teams, and a southern hub with four teams, catering for 170 players. “We’re on a big drive to recruit heaps more girls in those age brackets to create lots more teams to play against each other,” Mr Kyprian said. “A lot of the girls are beginners and come in at a level they

ANGLESEA River fish-kills will claim a land-dwelling victim when long-standing business Anglesea and Great Ocean Road Outdoor Centre closes at the end of Easter. Owner Gary Kerr said three successive years of kills spelled the end of his business. The Independent has reported on the river’s series of mass fish deaths, which prompted several investigations and reports. The reports blamed heavy rain flushing acid soils from coal deposits and tea tree marshes into the river. “It’s a bloody mess,” Mr Kerr said. “They had time to do something and didn’t and now it’s cost
the business. This was a quarterof-a-million-dollar business and now it’s down to $100,000. “If we try to keep it going next summer and the same thing happens we’ll be in debt to the tune of $50,000 or $60,000. It’s a joke.” Mr Kerr said authorities “sat on their hands” while his business suffered. “They had a secret report, never released to the public, saying opening the river to the sea would help mitigate the effect of the acidity,” he said. “They had three months to open it up and did nothing, just put up warning signs.” Victoria’s top recreational fishing body called for urgent action on river and its “long-

Coorabin House, Mr Fendyk said. “The opportunities to increase the size of the ANH facility to 100 beds will increase local job opportunities for the Bellarine and ensure it has sufficient beds to meet the needs of the population ... for many years to come.” Mr Fendyk said federal legislation protected the care of all BCH agedcare residents. “The sale of aged care facilities is not a new issue in this country and the community should be assured that providers have the best interests of residents when a sale is negotiated.”

80’s enough for loved school crossing veteran Kirke

By NOEL MURPHY EVEN the teachers are battling to keep a roll-call like Torquay school crossing supervisor Kirke White. The octogenarian traffic veteran knows every kid at Torquay College by name, according to school business manager Vicki Perry. “And we’ve got 900 students,” she told the Independent ahead of a special assembly planned for Mr White this Friday. “And he knows all the kids over the road at St Therese’s as well.” Mr White has carried out school crossing duties on Grossmans Rd for the past 18 years, safeguarding the welfare of thousands of kids over that time. His tireless efforts have become a Torquay institution among children, teachers and parents alike but after turning 80 earlier this year he’s bowing out. “He’s just lovely,” Ms Perry said. “He’s one of those blokes, a Torquay Tigers veteran, up early and spritely at school every morning. “He’s a very much-loved part of the school community.”

THE SALE of Portarlington’s Ann Nichol House is on a backburner as Bellarine Community Health (BCH) undertakes further due diligence and probity. The sale of the aged care facility has become a red-hot issue across the Bellarine Peninsula after BCH decided to sell the 80-bed facility, which was losing $200,000 a year. BCH’s board decided in 2013 to withdraw from residential aged care after selling 40-bed Coorabin House at Point Lonsdale. Opponents have accused BCH of
“Throughout this process there has been a significant amount of misinformation distributed by some parties and we expect more of the same at this weekend’s rally, which has been organised by the union.” Mr Fendyk said the banning of questions about the future of the facility at a recent Ann Nichol Advocacy Group meeting was “somewhat perplexing”. Economies of scale prevented BCH operating the facility profitably but private operators were “keen to grow the number of beds”, particularly if the sale included BCH’s 40-bed licence from

backflipping on earlier assurances it would retain Ann Nichol House. BCH chief executive John Fendyk hit back this week, arguing “a significant amount of misinformation” around the sale would probably increase at a protest rally this weekend at Portarlington’s Parks Reserve. “It’s unfortunate the protest is being conducted because a lot of accurate information will not be told regarding the future sale of Ann Nichol House,” Mr Fendyk told the Independent. “The sale to a private provider will not erode the residents’ level of care and financial status in place at present,” he said.

GEELONG received below-average rain in March, continuing a long-term trend of drier weather for the month. Geelong’s urban area averaged 28mm compared to the long-term average over 143 years of 36.9mm. Geelong’s March average for the 30 years to March 2013 was 28.1mm, making the month our driest of the year. The Bellarine Peninsula and Otways also recorded below-average rain for March. So far this calendar year the Geelong urban area has recorded 73mm of rain compared to the 30year average of 103.1mm. This does not mean drought but after

last year’s below average rain plus a possible El Nino arrival later we might be facing another drier year. However, none of this is certain because El Ninos do not always mean drought for Geelong, either. Regardless, our water catchments are still a healthy 75 per cent of capacity.

A noteworthy feature of the month was a breakdown at Breakwater’s automatic weather station on 21 March. The Bureau of Meteorology will not record the 4mm of rain on the day by 9am owing to the way the organisation operates. However, Geelong Weather Services has included the missing figures for accuracy. Compared to the 30-year average, Geelong was .8C warmer than normal in March. The top temperature was 34C on 11 March and six days were over 30C compared to the average of four.

MP slams City on trucks trial
CITY Hall’s contentious central city truck re-routing is dangerous, according to Geelong MP Ian Trezise. Up to 1000 extra trucks had moved from Malop and Mercer to Ryrie and McKillop streets but one of the biggest threats was on busy Latrobe Tce, he said. Hundreds more trucks were now turning downhill into McKillop St only to confront its railway boomgates almost immediately with nowhere to go, he said. “This is in addition to the problems they present driving further along McKillop past St Mary’s primary, the CFA, Am-
bulance Victoria and a childcare centre,” Mr Trezise said. “Not one of these was consulted - it’s not only the residents - and there was a lot of anger at the public information session we had. “My concern is that the council made its decision on 8 October to block truck traffic on Malop and Mercer with no input from residents but it wasn’t until five days before the trial being implemented that residents were invited to an information session.” Mr Trezise said the six-month trial would in fact operate for 12 months. Angry East Geelong residents feared the trial would permanent-
ly add 500 extra trucks a day to Ryrie St. The trial will record any changes in traffic volume on all key east-west roads in central Geelong. Trucks delivering to city area shops are exempt. Cr Michelle Heagney, who holds council’s Central Geelong portfolio, said early indications were promising for the Malop St truck restrictions, with excellent compliance among drivers. City services manager Gary Van Driel said most of the heavy trucks diverting from Malop St route were instead travelling along Ryrie St, with a few using Latrobe Tce and McKillop St.
MP’s abalone option for Ford staff SACKED Ford workers could end up processing abalone for Asian markets, according to a Liberal MP. David Koch said the region’s first aquaculture processing facility could provide a new career option for ex-Ford staff “due to their manufacturing experience”. The upper house MP raised the potential career switch after the announcement of a $380,000 grant for Indented Head aquaculture business Great Southern Waters. The firm will use the money to develop a processing facility to meet growing Asian demand for abalone. Mr Koch said the facility was “expected” to create eight full-time jobs by June 2016 and a further seven positions over the following two years.

ANY 440-year-old book will be weather-beaten but the tome Kristen Thornton produced this week at Deakin University has seen distance as much as age in its time. Australia’s second Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin, bought the classic 1575 text of Roman historian Sallust in Mexico in the 19th Century. The book is among treasures going on exhibition at Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library, in the university’s Waterfront campus. Curator Kristen Thornton said Alfred Deakin: From Journalist to International Diplomat celebrated one of Australia’s founding fathers of Federation.

Staff ripped off A PHARMACIST underpaid almost $14,000 was among 84 Geelong complaints to the Fair Work Ombudsman over the past six months, figures released to the Independent have revealed. The Ombudsman recovered $18,767 from nine businesses for the same number of underpaid workers. The Ombudsman’s office said the pharmacist’s employer failed to pay him out for time worked, wages in lieu of notice and annual leave entitlements upon termination of employment last year. Other cases included: A young apprentice plumber reimbursed $1900 for unpaid accrued rostered days off and
·
annual leave entitlements on termination; A retail supervisor reimbursed $1200 for underpayment of annual leave entitlements on termination; and A retail assistant reimbursed $700 for unpaid hours worked last year. The Ombudsman recovered less than $700 for the remaining workers, including $80 for a kitchen-hand. “We are confident these underpayments were the result of the employers’ lack of awareness of their obligations, rather than an attempt to avoid their responsibilities,” an Ombudsman’s spokesperson said. “When we identify a problem
· ·
and contact a business we find that most employers check their records, realise they have made a mistake and promptly rectify it. “In all cases, Fair Work inspectors educated the employers on their responsibilities under workplace laws and the workers were back-paid in full without the need for further action.” The spokesperson said inspectors were now auditing Geelong businesses in the cleaning, hospitality and bakery sectors. “We realise it’s critical to strike the right balance between education and compliance responses if we’re to achieve our mandate of creating fair and productive workplaces - and ensuring a level playing field for business.”

Letters Newtown on agenda IS IT just greed or is a hidden agenda behind the push for high-density development in the Newtown area (Independent, 21 March)? Do the decision-makers actually conduct a physical on-the-spot evaluation or are they just desk-top assessments? Many of the streets where multi-storey buildings are proposed are quite narrow and would become even more clogged with more residents and vehicles in the area. Traffic in this area is already at a very high level. Safety of the many students attending schools and colleges in the vicinity would also be a major concern. High-density buildings might be appropriate in some areas but not in established and historic parts of Newtown, which once destroyed can never be reinstated. Common sense needs to prevail. Pricilla Wright Newtown
Quiet riot over sale I HAVE never seen our quiet little town so collectively enraged over an issue as it is over Bellarine Health’s treatment of residents regarding the sale of Ann Nichol House (Independent, 28 March). It appears the community has been misled in order to sneak through a sale of Crown land without residents being adequately informed about what is happening, leaving us all with little time to make our feelings known or to counter the plan. Parliament must not sign over this piece of Crown land and should allow time for the community to resolve the issue in a well-informed and appropriate manner. Jenny Macaulay Portarlington
Climate changes, not facts DON Bartlett was keen that everyone should stick to the facts on climate change (Letters, 28 March). However, after discussing water vapour as a greenhouse gas he let the cat out of the bag by stating that climate scientists had applied their correction factor to their global warming predictions. Predictions can never be described as facts. To state as fact that global warming is due to mankind’s messing with the atmosphere is based on the assumption that the Sun’s radiation output is constant.

Share stories to zero in on road safety
CHIEF: Janet Dore.
THE TRANSPORT Accident Commission (TAC) has thrown its support behind Victoria Police’s new campaign, Road to Zero: It Starts With You. The campaign will see police saturate the state with 11 largescale operations targeting road safety over the next three months. For every person killed on Victorian roads, a further 20 are left with serious injuries. They are people’s brothers, mothers, sisters and sons and, for many of them, life will never be the same. Serious injury is the hidden toll of road trauma and each year, af-
The validity of this assumption is extremely questionable because Earth has probably been warming at varying rates, both positive and negative, since the last ice age, eons before the internal combustion engine, and because this phenomenon has been due solely to varying radiation output from mother Sun. I state this as opinion because it seems impossible to verify climate change facts. Clive Yates Newtown
Park suffers attack JON MAMONSKI supported the performance space proposed for Ocean Grove Park by claiming that the park was the cultural heart of Ocean Grove (Letters, 21 March). If this is true then our town is a cultural desert for all but four days of the year. Once a year we have Carols in the Park. Two weeks later we have Tranquility Fair, which is first and foremost a fair although it does include performances. We sometimes have one or two movies in the park over summer. And that’s it. Tranquility Fair was established in 1999 as a fund-raiser to save the park from development. Using the fair as a justification for putting a building in the park is outrageous. Mr Mamonski also claimed the performance
fecting close to 6000 Victorians. Victoria Police and TAC invite the community to join with us, to take ownership of road safety and stand together as we work towards our mission of zero road deaths and zero serious injuries. As part of the Road to Zero campaign, readers are invited to share stories about road trauma on Victoria Police’s Facebook page or on twitter using #roadtozero. Together we can make every journey a safe one. Janet Dore Transport Accident Commission chief executive officer
space was included in the park’s strategic plan in the ’90s. However, the design in the plan was a modest sound shell with removable fabric roof supported on wire strung between bollards. Yet again and again, it has been claimed the performance space was in the master plan. This claim has helped to progress the $1 million dollar overblown project and it has serious ramifications. If the proposed building goes ahead, we will never get the long-awaited community hall to replace the Green Hall demolished by council. We will lose a chunk of our precious little park to a permanent multi-purpose building and council will tell us this venue will have to make do as our community hall - a very sub-standard community hall. City win, peninsula loss A RECENTLY published letter spoke of Bellarine Peninsula ratepayers’ loss due to the abolition of councillors’ discretionary ward funding. As a long-time ratepayer on the peninsula, I can only agree. When the system was operating, wards outside central Geelong benefited from long-overdue funding for much-needed facilities that brought great social benefit to previously neglected areas such as Portarlington, Indented Head and St Leon-

ards. Despite criticism from some of the local press, the discretionary ward funding system provided a fairer distribution of funding to all wards within City of Greater Geelong. Now non-city wards will have less chance of funding for essential needs. It is almost certain the city area will swallow up the now-freed-up funds to pay for projects such as flower beds and Christmas decorations. Peninsula ratepayers must be very much on the wrong side of the ledger considering the considerable sum we have paid in rates during the 20 years since we lost our own council. What became of the City’s windfall revenue from selling former Shire of Bellarine assets? Was it spent on facilities for the Bellarine Peninsula? The peninsula seems to be falling even further behind when compared to new developments such as Armstrong Creek, which gets constant attention in terms of facilities such as public transport and its own hospital. What’s happened to fairness and equity? Peter Cowden Clifton Springs
Waste jobs safe A STORY headlined ‘Regional body wasted’ in the 28 March Independent misrepresented Victorian Coalition Government reforms revolutionising our waste industry to build a better Victoria. After 11 years of Labor neglect, the Government has delivered better waste and recovery services for Victorians. To deliver the much-needed reforms that the waste sector had asked for, red tape and layers of duplication had to be removed to create a vastly improved business model for the sector. The Government’s centralised business model has been highly commended and regional waste management groups have welcomed the reforms. To set the record straight, legislation put in place by the coalition prohibits any job losses. Readers should know that any mention of job losses was a politically-motivated scare campaign led by Cr Andy Richards, the state Labor candidate for South Barwon, who was quoted - whose candidature was not disclosed. Cr Richards’ Labor party colleagues are on record showing their support for the Government’s action. Ryan Smith Environment and Climate Change Minister

Wizard to cast magic at GPAC By MICHELLE HERBISON THE RUBY slippers in The Wizard of Oz were originally silver and the Land of Oz was not a dream but a real place, a children’s show’s star has revealed. YOUNGSTARS1.COM’S Shakey the Scarecrow certainly holds expertise on the topic, having toured the world performing The Wizard of Oz children’s stage show for the past 15-odd years. “It’s been a long yellow brick road over 3800 performances worldwide,” he reminisced. THE group is celebrating the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz classic movie with a jubilee tour around Victoria, arriving at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) on Tuesday. “There’s a lot of difference between L. Frank Baum’s book, published in 1900. and the movie,” Shakey revealed. “The initial screen tests were with Judy Garland wearing silver slippers but silver was a yucky grey on screen, so they scrapped it and gave her red. “MGM wanted to show off Technicolour in 1939.” The show at GPAC would encourage children to come dressed up as their favourite character and be ready to sing and dance along, ideal for children between ages two and eight years, Shakey said.
The show would also accept donations of toys and books for the troupe’s children’s hospital appeal. “It’s a highly interactive version so kids can get involved and help us find the wizard and keep me awake because I keep getting tired now and then,” Shakey said. “The Wizard of Oz transcends age and boundaries. It’s one of those stories that has something in it for everyone. “It’s a story of self-empowerment - you have the power within you if you believe in yourself.” After touring the country and internationally, performing the show to original cast-members, Shakey said the team was especially excited to celebrate the 75th anniversary. “WE had the honour of performing with the last living munchkins. We did Over the Rainbow with Jerry Maren, the Lollypop Kid, in America.” Former munchkin Margaret Pellegrini became a “dear friend”, visiting Australia to perform with the crew in Sydney, Shakey added. The grandson of author L. Frank Baum surprised the cast backstage at an American performance, saying: “If great grandfather was alive, I’m sure he would be clapping, singing along and smiling with your show!” Tickets for the 10.30am and midday shows cost $17 for children or $22 for adults and are available from GPAC.
MAGIC: The latest stage produciton of The Wizard of Oz arrives in Geelong next week.

Tony Vee A True Dedication to Neil Diamond 2 Hour Spectacular INDIE: Rising Geelong band Residual.
MORNING MELODIES
Changing core GEELONG musician Sam Burtt might have surprised his hardcore bandmates when he revealed he’d been tinkering with indie rock but they were quick to jump on board the new venture. Once massive hard-core fans, Andy Rankin and Nicholas Cousins found themselves listening to “Triple J bands”, as the contemporary indie genre has become known, and were soon were looking for a bassist. Residual was born when the group recruited Josh Carter, also a convert from the hard-core scene, who described indie music as a “breath of fresh air”. “When I went to one band practice I saw a lot of potential in it,” Carter recalled.
He was certainly right about the potential – Residual, barely a year old, has just scored an APRA songwriting award and played its first FReeZA Push Start Grand Final. The band had to win two heats to get to that stage - something the members didn’t for a moment expect to achieve. “At that point we’d only really just finalised our set but we thought, ‘Why not just get out there and show people what we’re about’,” Carter said. Up against talented and moreestablished local bands including Murdena, the Residual guys were surprised to come out on top. “We thought, ‘Wow, we’re not on the same level as them’. We were very, very humbled,” Carter said.
The crowd and judges at Warrnambool responded positively to the release of Residual’s single, Wait, on the night, despite the band feeling “really nervous” about it before the show. “But rather than thinking of it as a competition we just thought of it as another show and it just worked for us,” Carter said. The band will release another single, Numbered, to coincide with an east coast tour including a local gig at Beav’s Bar next Thursday. “The opportunities that we’ve been given we want to use to the best of our ability, play more shows and have more people listen to our music,” Carter said. “We’re purely doing it to enjoy ourselves.”

Darrell Lea our ‘sweet central’
DARRELL Lea’s Malop St store has been sweet central for Geelong confectionery aficionados for more than 35 years. The store’s famous range of chocolates, licorice and all manner of sweet-tooth temptations is as popular today as it has ever been. While the Darrell Lea chain underwent changes across the country in recent years, the local owners of the Geelong outlet, at 71 Malop St, weathered the storm and recently renovated the store to create a chocolate cafe that sits alongside the core range of delectable Darrell Lea confectionery. It now serves hot and cold drinks together with slices, biscuits and more in a comfortable and stylish setting. Barista Benito Martino, with a decade of experience under the discerning gaze of Sydney’s cafe scene, has brought his skills to Darrell Lea Geelong, creating high-quality coffees that match the quality expected of the brand’s chocolates. Today the store is one of a few select locations in Australia where customers can view the entire Darrell Lea range, including everything from its Easter selection, which has just arrived in store. Anyone who fancies a quick break in the morning or mid-afternoon to quell a growling tummy while shopping or maybe just a brief respite from work should visit Darrell Lea Geelong for a sweet retreat that can’t be beat.

ROLLERWAY in Newtown offers lots of fun and exercise for children during school holidays – regardless of the weather. With roller skating undergoing a resurgence and rollerblading still as popular as ever, kids will be keen to pull on their skates during holidays. With extra holiday session times scheduled, skating is available seven days a week. Rollerway offers a variety of activities to keep kids of all ages entertained. Rink operator Raul Aparicio says the sessions are always fun with music videos, lights and lots of games and activities throughout. “It’s a really fun and safe activity for kids of all ages,” Raul says. Rollerway also has a separate indoor skate park for skateboarding, scooters and BMX riders. “Our skate park is very popular and a great alternative to outdoor parks,” Raul says. The centre is also available for children’s functions. “We have lots of birthday parties at the centre and the introduction of the separate skate park and forthcoming disco lounge and jumping castle areas have helped modernise the activities,” Raul says. In-line roller hockey is another feature at Newtown, with Geelong boasting Australia’s biggest independent roller hockey league. “The centre offers kids and adults a chance to get a bit active and have fun regardless of the weather,” Raul says. Rollerway Newtown is at 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. More information is available at www.rollerway.com.au

Checks key to health of skin
1084897-LB31-13
Have you had your skin checked lately?
AT LEAST two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, with the disease killing about 2000 Australians a year. However, more than 95 per cent of skin cancers can be successfully treated if found early. Contrary to popular belief, most melanomas and dangerous skin cancers don’t come from moles, so they can be difficult to detect in their early stages. Skin cancers can occur anywhere on the body, so a complete check by a trained doctor is the best way to detect them. Dr Ian Holten and his team at Australian Skin Face Body are concerned about people seeking their help when it’s already too late. “It’s devastating when we see
Dr Ian Holten. a client for the first time with a spot they’ve had for ages and it turns out to be a melanoma,” Dr Holten says. “This most-deadly form of
skin cancer can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated. Had they been diagnosed sooner, a wider range of treatment options would be available.” Australian Skin Face Body focuses on prevention, early detection and treatment of skin cancer. “Having a skin check is just one of those things you need to do,” Dr Holten advises. “Some spots on the skin, such as freckles, moles or sunspots, aren’t cancer but they are warning signs that your skin has had too much sun exposure. Get them checked just for peace of mind.” Skin checks take about 20 minutes and cost only $30 after the Medicare rebate. Appointments at Australian Skin Face Body are available by phoning 5221 8444. Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic audiologist Fiona Sutherland. ute sessions to create lasting improvements in hearing. A 69-year-old man who was one of the first people to test the LACE program said he “couldn’t believe how much easier it was to follow conversations within the first two weeks of training”.
“I was able to keep up with the grandchildren’s chatter and enjoy better conversations with friends. Since completing the program I’ve found it much easier to follow the topic of conversations even when there is a lot of background noise,” he said. “Even my wife seems happier with me and shouts at me less.” The LACE program is highly effective for wearers of hearing aids or people considering them and can also benefit anyone who has trouble hearing in noisy environments and even people with Auditory Processing Disorder. The LACE program is undertaken at home but results need to be professionally administered. More information and a free demonstration CD with a sample training session is available by visiting Waurn Ponds Hearing Clinic or phoning it on 5245 7940.

THE MANY recent Federal Government changes to the rules for obtaining a Disability Support Pension (DSP) have made it less likely that anyone with a disability will be eligible. So what can you do if your DSP is cancelled or your application is rejected? The answer is to appeal within 13 weeks of the decision. Appeals are free. The most important tip to improve your likelihood of success is to have plenty of evidence. First, provide medical evidence from appropriately qualified medical practitioners that clearly addresses each DSP medical criteria for each separate condition. Always keep a copy.
HAS YOUR PET PASSED AWAY? Let us know by ticking the box on the reverse of the renewal notice and returning to us.

vant table they would assign each separate condition. Keep a copy. Third, provide copies of all X-rays, specialist reports, treatments, reasons and prognosis for current and future treatments. Fourth, any claims for mental health conditions need to be made by a psychiatrist. Evidence can be from a clinical psychologist if diagnosis is not made by psychiatrist, otherwise no points can be taken into account. Pet registrations are due in City of Greater Geelong next Thursday.
Geelong pet rego due next week BEING a pet owner involves all sorts of responsibilities to keep four-legged friends happy and safe. Pet registration and microchipping play an important role in this. Registering and microchipping pets makes it much more likely they will be returned if they go missing. Geelong has one of the largest populations of dogs and cats of any Australian municipality.
This means pet registration helps council fund a range of animal management programs and proactive initiatives such as a new Pet Park at Corio and community pet owner days. By law, all cats and dogs residing within the municipality must be registered with the City of Greater Geelong from three months of age. The 2014/2015 registration for any pet previously registered with council is due Thursday 10
April. To avoid penalties, owners must ensure their registration is paid and lodged with council by this date. Payments can be made online or at any council customer service centres. Discounts are available to eligible owners and pension card holders. More information is available by phoning 5272 5272 or visiting geelongaustralia.com.au.

WINDOW tinting makes cars look cool but Tintmaster can give many more reasons why it’s worth tinting with unique Ultra-Carbon film, the highest performance product on the market. First, it keeps the interior cooler, especially in summer. Tinting protects occupants from harmful UVA rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, and also helps block UV rays that can lead to cracking and facing of vehicles’ interior surfaces. Window tinting film helps hold shattered glass together in the event of an accident so it doesn’t smash all over occupants’ faces. Tinting also removes glare from the Sun and other headlights, reducing the chances of accidents. Burglary risks are also reduced because tinting decreases the visibility of contents inside cars, such as mobile phones or other valuables. Air-conditioning is cheaper to run because it doesn’t have to work so hard with Tintmaster tint, meaning reduced load on the engine for improved fuel economy. However, installation is critical to window tinting and Tintmaster is expert in applying its products to all models of cars. Staff undertake thorough training and stay up to date with changes in tinting techniques and technologies. Tinting with Tintmaster usually costs between $250 and $500 and takes around half a day. Whether its black windows for great looks or achieving maximum heat and UV protection, Tintmaster has the solution to any tinting requirement. Meeting individual requirements is a specialty of the company, with prospective clients always welcome to talk to the staff about the best window tint job for any car. Tintmaster has been servicing the Geelong are for 11 years.

NEW WORKSHOP
TOP-FLIGHT factory training in the US and Sydney has ensured German Automotive technicians are up with the latest vehicle technology advances. With the specialised week-long training in Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes, German Automotive staff are now keen to put their new-found knowledge to work. German Automotive’s Ben Buckle says remaining abreast of the newest technology utilised in automotive manufacture is crucial to motor technicians working on Germany’s finest brands. “You cannot expect to work on top German cars unless you are fully factory trained,” Ben explains. “We consider it crucial to really know our stuff so we can work on our customer’s car to the best of our ability.” Ben says technology is similar across marques but the number of new models being released means technicians needed the extra training. “This allows our staff to use their knowledge and experience and extend that to the complete range of Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes models.” Ben says the complete factory training matches staff knowledge with the top diagnostic equipment used by German Automotive. “It just means that we can be certain that we will diagnose every car correctly when it’s booked in for a service.” Not only can clients book a service online at germanautomotive.com.au, they also have access to a courtesy car. German Automotive enables Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes owners to access a full range of automotive needs without jeopardising their new car warranty. German Automotive is at 43 Autumn, St Geelong West, phone 5222 2555.

IndySport Cats feel Pies’ pressure bite
On the
By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN COLLINGWOOD’S defensive pressure against Geelong in recent games will be a focus of the Cats’ game plan for the Saturday night MCG heavyweight clash. The pair’s games often turn into a contest between a flock of Magpies swooping on the ball carrier as Geelong attempts to maintain its Cat attack. “Their pressure around the ball is generally pretty good while we tend to use the ball and attack most of the time,” coach Chris Scott conceded. “Collingwood have adjusted to the
way we play pretty well but I don’t think they’ve walked all over us (in recent games). “Most of those games have been pretty close.” Scott’s assessment was right on the mark: Geelong has won more games over Collingwood by less than six points than any other team - a total of 17. “There’s a bit of a trend in the competition to playing keepings off and possessing the ball. We might do that at times but that’s not a cornerstone of our game plan,” Scott said. In the Cats’ favour is the mixed
start Collingwood has endured to the season, with a deflating round one loss to Fremantle followed by a resounding win over a disappointing Sydney. The Pies’ defence will have a new soldier this week after Nathan Brown succumbed to a shoulder injury suffered against the Swans. The ruck battle also looks to be in Geelong’s favour with Hamish McIntosh and Dawson Simpson demonstrating their ability to work together. Scott gave no indication the ruck combination would be separated this week, despite conceding the pair would not play every game together.
McIntosh said he was confident the Cats had the form to topple the Pies despite coach Nathan Buckley’s insistence on tight defence. “You can see Nathan has them well drilled and it’s all about contested footy and that’s the number one principle now in AFL footy - you’ve got to win that to win games,” McIntosh explained. “We need to bring that into our game and it’s something we’ve done really well in the first two weeks and it’s something we’re going to have to do Saturday night in a big game against a big club to hopefully break that streak.”
Warriors face Springvale after narrow Box Hill loss By JOSIP ZILIC BOX HILL United picked up a tough 1-0 victory over North Geelong Warriors in National Premier League football at Elcho Park on Saturday. A second-half goal from the penalty spot by Rinor Muriqi was enough to get Box Hill over the line The first half produced no goals as both teams toiled for chances but as the half wore on, North Geelong dominated possession. The first real chance of the game came to Warriors midfielder Reardo Luka who found space in front of the penalty box and blasted a goal-bound shot that forced Alexander Pavlidis into a terrific diving save. The Warriors were in control but Box Hill defended well as it cleared and blocked its way out of trouble, seeing the first half out with both teams locked at nil-all. In the second half Box Hill came out with greater attack in mind, bringing Kenny Athiu into the match and immediately causing the home side trouble. Box Hill was rewarded with a dubious penalty on the 56th minute after Athiu climbed all over the defence but the referee saw it differently and called a called a push from behind. Muriqi stepped up and sent goalkeeper Frano Saric the wrong way to give the away side a 1-0 lead. The Warriors then surged forward in waves looking for an equaliser. In the 65th minute the ball fell to the feet of Paleka whose powerful shot on goal bounced off a sea of legs, cleared by a scampering Box Hill defence. With 10 minutes to go the referee showed a red card to North Geelong’s Luka for throwing the ball at an unsuspecting player. With 10 men for the remaining 10 minutes, North Geelong kept pressing and had the ball in the net but the referee adjudged it offside, much to the locals’ dismay. With a minute to go Box Hill’s Christian Lak impeded on Paleka in the penalty area only for the referee to wave play on and seconds later, ending the intense encounter with Box Hill holding on for a tough win.
FIGHTING BACK: The Warriors’ Reha Kurul repels another Box Hill attack. North Geelong coach Ante Skoko was still pleased. “We were playing one of the best teams in the league,” he noted. “I thought we were more effective and spent
more time in their half. That’s very pleasing to me. “I have a lot of respect for what they’re doing at Box Hill.” The Warriors head to Springvale next week to play the winless White Eagles.

Kings rock coast IDEAL conditions produced outstanding captures over the past week. John Mole and I spun the rocks just past Lorne where we caught any number of salmon to 1.3kg. However, the sudden appearance of many small kingfish made for some exciting catch-and-release fishing. Danny Graham also caught a 3.4kg kingfish while spinning the rocks under Mount Defiance, along with quality salmon. Anglers fishing Cinema Point landed some nice silver trevally, while Grant Martin caught elephant fish and a 6.5kg gummy shark while fishing Point Roadknight beach after dark. Kingfish were taken offshore from Barwon Heads and inside The Rip. Small gummy shark were caught close in to Swan Bay. The best captures were in the early hours and on fresh squid heads. Stan Rogers landed the best gummy I saw this week, a fish of 10.4kg cleaned. Whiting reports were fair, with the best fishing before daylight at Queenscliff on pippies for fish averaging 35cm to 38cm. Guy Tanner caught a 49cm whiting among six fish over 40cm directly out from Cottage by the Sea. Whiting around 32cm were again caught close in to Bird Rock. The average bag was generally a dozen or so, with pippies and fishing before daylight returning the best results. Garry Marshall spun the rocks at North Shore, catching three nice pike on small metal baitfishprofile lures. Peter McMahon drifted the Hermsley spoil grounds with soft plastics, catching only the odd flathead and small snapper until he landed an 8.4kg gummy shark after a 15-minute battle just on dark not bad on 4kg line! Salmon were caught in many areas around Corio Bay, with Alcoa Pier and within 100m of the shore off the Quarries producing the most consistent. In freshwater, Troy Clements landed a nice brown trout from West Barwon Reservoir. He took his 1.9kg fish on a gold-coloured Tassie Devil while spinning from the right end of the main rock wall. Moorabool Reservoir produced redfin over 1kg on small freshwater yabbies and scrub worms, although the snags cost a few hooked fish. The Barwon River upstream of the Shannon Ave bridge hosted reasonable redfin action on lure and bait, while bread or corn baits accounted for some big carp. Estuary anglers targeted bream in the Curdies and Hopkins rivers on lure. Vibes and small suspending bibbed designs worked well, while shrimp, bass yabby or worms were handy baits. This weekend should again produce good salmon fishing from the rocks near Lorne, while freshwater enthusiasts should consider the long drive to Lake Toolondo for some of the state’s best trout fishing. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle.com. au or visit Brian at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights. 1122165-HM09-14
