Think safety first By YASEMIN TALAT AN EASTER holiday road traffic campaign is due to launch across Brimbank and Melton roads next week as police gear up to reduce road trauma. Brimbank and Melton Police squads are heading a major twoweek operation including the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. They want to ensure motorists are doing the right thing on the roads during this high-risk period. The 13-day enforcement campaign will run from Tuesday 15 April to Sunday 27 April. Road Policing Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said motorists could expect to see both marked and unmarked police vehicles targeting all the major arterial roads over the coming weeks. “Road trauma isn’t just about people who die,” Sen Sgt Burbidge said. “It’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services

Police on road to zero By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO POLICE will saturate roads across Melbourne’s West over the next three months in a bid to reduce fatalities and injuries across the state. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill last week launched the “Road to Zero - it starts with you” campaign and urged the community to take ownership of its role in reducing road trauma. It is hoped the campaign will unite the community to work together to achieve a long-term vision of zero deaths and zero serious injuries on Victorian roads. Road to Zero, which will include at least 11 road operations, comes in the wake of a horror start to the year. Already 70 people have died four more than this time last year. But police are reminding motorists that there is another side to the tragedy - those who are left scarred and maimed by road trauma. In 2013, more than 5500 people were seriously injured following collisions. Mr Hill said survivors are not often spoken of. “Road trauma is not just about the people who die - it’s about the enormous impact on the community,” he said. “Everyone is affected by road trauma - from the family left behind, to the emergency services workers who have to cut people out of a wreck. “These people are not just anonymous names in the paper, they are not a statistic, they are our neighbours, our friends, they are all of us.” Mr Hill called on the community to stand together and pledge to stop the unnecessary carnage on the state’s roads. He said it is important for motorists to drive to the speed limit and conditions, stay off their mobile phones and show courtesy and respect for other road users.

Youth leaders awarded for contribution By YASEMIN TALAT OVER a dozen young people were recognised for their contribution to the community and dedication to their education at the Gorton Young Leaders Award ceremony last week. Federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor presented 14 graduates from the Gorton electorate with Young Leader Awards at a ceremony held at his Caroline Springs electorate last Wednesday. The Gorton Young Leader Awards, now in its fifth year, recognises the hard work and community service of recently graduated high school students in the electorate. “I give my heartfelt congratulations to these young men and women,” Mr O’Connor said.

“Each recipient here has distinguished themselves as future leaders through their commitment to their education and their community,” he said. The Gorton young leaders, who graduated from seven different schools across the electorate, were acknowledged for their volunteer work and efforts to help local causes which included volunteering for St John Ambulance and leading fundraising activities for HeartKids. Also among them were former school captains and members of student leadership groups. “Each of these young people are advocates for their formers schools and advocates for their communities,” Mr O’Connor said.

“I’m proud we have such upstanding representatives of Melbourne’s West,” he said. “It is very pleasing to see so many accomplished young people in our community.” The following students received their awards at the ceremony last week: Gordana Ostojic – Melton Secondary College. Borg’s surprise resignation By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO MELTON City Council and its residents were shocked last week at the sudden announcement that one of the area’s most recognisable faces would soon be leaving his post. Coburn Ward councillor Broden Borg announced his resignation at last week’s council meeting, saying he would be pursuing an international teaching opportunity. Cr Borg, who received the highest primary vote in the 2012 council elections, will be leaving on 20 August - less than 18 months into his four-year term. He told Star the opportunity to live and teach overseas for the next two to three years, was an opportunity he could not pass up. “I was really reluctant to leave council, but it is a decision that is right for me,” Cr Borg said. “I’m feeling relieved that the community knows ... but it is sad anytime that things change. I’m sorry that I can’t finish the term but I have enjoyed my time on council. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity, but I thought about it long and hard. I believe I have delivered on all of my promises and have always been truthful and honest with the community.” Cr Borg was first elect-

He was re-elected to the council in the October 2012 general election. Melton City Council chief executive officer Kelvin Tori said the VEC would now conduct a countback to fill the vacancy on 26 August in accordance with the Act. Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association president Nathan Miles said the broader community was sad-

dened by Cr Borg’s announcement. “Cr Borg was elected with the highest primary vote at the last election, proving he is a councillor of the people and there will be members of the community who are saddened to lose him as their councillor,” Mr Miles said. The outgoing councillor had some well-timed advice for his replacement. “Do what you say you’re going to do - be involved and get out there and don’t make promises you can’t keep.”

KANGAROOS have been found shot dead with their ears cut off in Keilor raising concern for the safety of the Australian icon. The Australian Society for Kangaroos is calling on the public to come forward with any information surrounding the illegal killings of kangaroos across Keilor over the last few weeks. A fortnight ago Wildlife Victoria was contacted to rescue a juvenile kangaroo which was frightened for its life after being shot at. The juvenile kangaroo was found by the volunteer rescuers, Julieanna and Gerti Kita, lying next to a buck, which had been shot dead and had his ears cut off.

The Keilor local who made the call told rescuers that he had seen several kangaroos shot dead in the area. President of the Australian Society for Kangaroos Nikki Sutterby said people’s attitudes towards kangaroos had to change. “The attitudes towards kangaroos are so appalling in this country,” Ms Sutterby said. “People think if they want to go out and do a bit of hunting that kangaroos are fair game,” she said. “They are shot with bows and arrows, they are rounded up and slaughtered ... it’s a daily thing for our organisation to hear about these things.” Ms Sutterby said kangaroos were family-orientated animals and would suffer severely when

their family members were killed or hurt. “When one of them dies the rest of them suffer, particularly the joeys who need their mums for 18 months and they can’t survive without her,” Ms Sutterby said. The juvenile kangaroo found in Keilor, although not shot, died from shock several hours later at the Wildabout Wildlife Rescue Centre. Kangaroos are protected under law across Australia, including Victoria, and those caught killing kangaroos illegally could face hefty fines, Ms Sutterby said. A life-saving swim By YASEMIN TALAT A TAYLORS Lakes swim school is making waves with a new swimming program to help children with cystic fibrosis. Paul Sadler Swimland has joined forces with Cystic Fibrosis Victoria to introduce ‘CFV Kids Swimming Lesson Program’ to their pools. The program is set to financially assist families and ensure children living with cystic fibrosis are en-

rolled into life-saving swimming lessons. Manager of Paul Sadler Swimland Taylors Lakes and swim teacher Ebony Matthews hoped more local families would take advantage of the program. “I think it’s important for families with kids with cystic fibrosis to take up this offer because swimming has a huge range of health benefits for the kids,” Ms Mathews said. “And its important for us to be

able to offer the discount to families and give them the financial support to provide something that has such great health benefits,” she said. Swimming has been recognised as helping children with cystic fibrosis. The partnership between the Swimland and Cystic Fibrosis Victoria acknowledged that swimming was particularly good for developing lung capacity and maintaining cardiopulmonary fitness, which

could slow the progression of the condition. And swimming also helped to maintain bone density and general well-being, which was also of great importance for people with cystic fibrosis. MELTON didn’t have a good night at Hillview Stadium on Saturday but certainly made up for it on its home floor the following day. The Thoroughbreds battled against the Southern Peninsula Sharks on Saturday night and were forced to play catchup from start to finish during their 83-63 loss. Shannan Davey simply destroyed Melton in the paint, taking the Breds’ defence to task with a whopping 36 points. Jeff Crowe tried to match Davey down the other end, scoring 31 points with six rebounds in the shootout. But it did little to curb the Sharks’ dominance. On Sunday Melton was back at home to take on the Altona Gators and looked a vastly improved outfit, winning every quarter on its way to a solid 28-point win. A four-point buffer was stretched out to 10 by half-time, and by the final change that margin had doubled to 20. The Breds completely shut down Altona’s shooting game and continued to build on their dominance the longer the game went. By game’s end Melton improved its Division One record to 3-2 and now sits third on the Terrill Division table. After a quiet night that yielded just seven points against the Sharks, big ticket import Anthony Kimble was pivotal against Altona. With 20 points and five rebounds, Kimble was the star of the show and proved his worth to the ’Breds. Team-mate Cameron McCallum also hit the scoreboard with 20 points of his own and was Melton’s top rebound man with 14. Also hitting double figures for the day were Matthew Hedger (13 points) and Paul Ross (10 points). Brent Radoslovic battled hard for the Gators with 18 points and Daniel Martin came up with 11, but with little support from the rest of the crew, Altona simply

A MORE youthful Melton South outfit is set to take the field in the Ballarat Football League this season. Coach Mathew Sutton has flagged development as the major focus for the year with a side that will feature a number of the club’s young guns coming up from the under-18s side that enjoyed a successful 2013 season. “I still want to play finals football but it’ll be about our younger blokes developing again because at the end of the day grand finals are won - I believe - from your fifth-best player to your 22nd player,” Sutton said. “So if we can get more development out of those blokes and they step up another level - which I think they will - I think we’ll progress pretty quickly. “There’s some really good talent there and all those kids have played a fair bit of the practice matches - and their pre-season form’s been great. “They were given their opportunity and they’ve grabbed

The Bloods will be coming from a long way back in 2014 after narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon 12 months ago. The new playing coach has instilled his game plan to a new-look group and is hoping for an improved output this season. “We’ll just want to play with confidence,” Murphy said. “I think last year just talking to people and also just from an outsider looking in at the results, you could just see there was no confidence in the group. “Being in games at halftime nearly every single week and then getting thumped in every game except one is a real sign of not too much confidence and it’s also a sign of a lack of fitness, so they’re the

two things we worked on over the pre-season.” New recruit Jarryd Ramsay is ready to set the BFL alight as is club stalwart Matthew Notman, while youngster Phil Hoyland has been impressive down back throughout the practice match phase. “He’s only a 19-year-old kid and about 190cm but his commitment to the contest and his willingness to not wanting to get beaten is just something I’ve never seen before in a kid that young,” Murphy said. “He’s really held down full back and he’s played on three really good opponents in the last few weeks and beaten all three of them - comprehensively, too.” Melton will be looking for a win to start its 2014 campaign at home to Sebastopol on Saturday. “Come round one I’m expecting a big effort from the boys but until 5pm Saturday, I’m not going to be too sure of how we’re going to go,” Murphy said.
