Hooking up to rock on WARBURTON Caravan Park will rock again this Easter with the 2014 Warburton Easter Annual Fundraiser set for a weekend of Easter treats, fantastic music and fun. The event, held each year at the picturesque caravan park on the banks of the Yarra River, kicks off on Easter Saturday with an Easter egg hunt and visit from the Easter Bunny, kids’ games, a best dressed bike competition,

sausage sizzle, face painting and more. Easter Sunday is packed with more sausage sizzling and kids’ games but with the star attraction for the day a power-packed live music event featuring local and guest performers. One of the Upper Yarra’s most popular guest performers, Australian saxophonist Wilbur Wilde, will be back on stage along with vocal-

ist Peter Brocklehurst and local favourites the Yarra River Band and Ruckus. The event has raised many thousands of dollars over the years for community groups including CFA and SES, Yarra Valley FM, Ted’s Track Keepers and local schools. This year it’s local sporting groups which will benefit from what promises to be a great week-

end for locals and visitors. Entry is free on both days with the fun starting at noon and lots of opportunities to support the organisers and their efforts on behalf of the community with a raffle, sausage sizzles and other fundraisers over the two days. Students bring sweet message WHAT has chocolate got to do with Easter? Absolutely nothing, but eggs - that’s another story. As the Yarra Valley’s Catholic schools prepared on Friday for their Easter break, students at St Joseph’s in Yarra Junction and St Brigid’s in Healesville celebrated the true meaning of Easter, and some of the symbols that have become part of the broader celebration. The school communities observed the Good Friday tradition of the Stations of the Cross with students at St Joseph’s re-enacting the journey of Jesus from when he is condemned to death to when he is laid in the tomb after his crucifixion. There was great relief as St Joseph’s principal John Faulkner drilled down to the relevance of chocolate as part of the meaning of Easter. Students got it - “nothing” they chimed. But the egg they said was a symbol of new life and the resurrection of Jesus and even chocolate Easter eggs can be the catalyst for reflection on Easter Sunday. At St Brigid’s, the students got to witness the fruits of their labour, with every class at the school designing a different Station of the Cross, which were unveiled on Friday 4 April. The students embraced their creativity with the stations with artworks, photographs and physical all depicting Jesus on his path to the tomb. One of the artworks was a large drawing of Jesus carrying his wooden

The students at each school visited the stations and were asked to reflect on the wider messages in their lives, such as Simon helping Jesus with the cross. “It’s very much a reflection on what happened then and how they can improve their own lives,” said St Brigid’s religious education leader Gennie Mul-

len. Although Easter is still two weeks away, the schools held the Stations of the Cross on the final day of term to have the ideas in the forefront of students’ minds as they went into Easter. “The message we want them to get is... how we can live our lives differently and bring forth the message that we’ve got to be kinder, we have to help people and just try to follow Jesus a bit more,” Ms Mullen said.

burne would be closing the site. In July last year, Higher Education and Skills Minister Peter Hall said the Coalition was committed to have vocational and higher education delivered at the former Swinburne campus. Ms Fyffe echoed this statement and said that the aim of the current EOI process would be to identify educational groups to take up use of the site, though she said she would not speculate on the result of the process.

pressions of interest were gathered, Swinburne would assess and evaluate the submissions before taking the next step with the site sale. Mr Merlino said at the announcement that, in his 12 years in Parliament, no issue had been of greater significance to the outer eastern area than the closure of the Lilydale campus. The campus officially ceased as an education provider in mid-2013 after it was announced in late 2012 that Swin-

the opposition hasn’t respected the process.” Ms Fyffe said that, as a result of the ALP announcement, there was a risk that property speculators could take up the site, knowing that Labor would have to buy it back as an election commitment. “I am concerned that this will shut out educational providers along the way,” she said. Mr Hyland said that, after the ex-

EDUCATION in the Yarra Ranges has been pushed into the spotlight for the upcoming State Election, with Labor announcing it will revive Swinburne’s former Lilydale campus if elected. However, the Coalition has dismissed the announcement as a “stunt” and accused the opposition of interfering with the plans to sell the campus. On Tuesday 1 April Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews visited the former campus, where a group of residents, former students and campaigners had gathered. Mr Andrews told the group that the campus would be guaranteed to reopen as a higher education and TAFE facility if the party was elected in November. Mr Andrews was joined by Evelyn candidate Peter Harris and Monbulk MP James Merlino and said the ALP would do “all in its power” to reopen the site. He said this included compulsorily acquiring the campus if it was sold off before the election. “We will re-open Swinburne Lilydale and ensure that it is forever a centre of learning, a centre of knowledge, somewhere where kids in this local community can get those precious skills so that they get a quality start to life, and can make a contribution to their local community and to our state,” he said. “I give fair warning to anyone thinking of buying these buildings they are not for sale.” Mr Harris confirmed that Swinburne University of Technology would not be the education provider if Labor were to reopen the campus. Former Healesville resident, current Swinburne student and campaigner against the closure of the Lilydale campus Amie Watson said the an-

nouncement was a good starting point for returning education to the Yarra Valley. She said that her experience of travelling to the city to study was difficult, and having the Lilydale campus open helped her to continue her education. “I think having an educational facility in the Yarra Valley would be massive, in terms of employment and education,” Ms Watson said. “I think TAFE is a good start ... (but) hopefully a university provider will come in.” Swinburne has called for expressions of interest (EOI) for the potential sale of the property with a 10 April deadline. Swinburne’s Director of Communications Tom Hyland said the sale process for the site would be attracting interest from a range of parties, including groups wishing to deliver education at the campus. “Current policy settings, including approvals with respect to the EOI process, remain in place until at least the next State Election on 29 November 2014,” he said. “Swinburne remains committed to the continuation of this process. “Comments made by the Victorian opposition do not affect the process in train.” Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe said the announcement was a media stunt that contained “no substance”, and said that no higher education provider had committed to coming to the former campus. “Swinburne has a clear and transparent expression of interest process which is designed to identify educational providers that are serious about being located at the Lilydale campus,” she said. “It is important that it is given the opportunity to run its course without any type of interference - it’s a shame

HEALESVILLE Primary School students received a special visitor last week, when a former student rode to the school as part of an interstate cycle tour to cure cancer. The Tour de Cure team of 111 cyclists visited Healesville on Thursday 3 April, stopping by local schools on their trip from Sydney to Hobart. Riding in the team was former Healesville resident Jodi Harris formerly Jodi Carrick - who was greeted by her former Healesville schoolmates, Kirsty Tite, Karen Fuller and Kersten Gentle. Jodi said she was nostalgic visiting the school grounds on her 1576 kilometre journey, which was in its last stages when she rolled in. “It’s amazing to roll back into here, given that I’ve just ridden around 1100 kilometres from Sydney to here, through the Snowy Mountains,” she said. “I’m so glad my school friends came and said hello - it really means the world to me. “It’s a very nostalgic day for me.” Ms Harris said the Tour de Cure riders then gave a presentation to the school children, promoting the mes-

Rail trail for bikes plan By JESSE GRAHAM THE PROPOSAL to get bikes riding on a rail trail between Yarra Glen and Lilydale has taken its first steps, with a ‘Friends of’ group formed and organisers hoping the project will gain momentum. Around 43 community members attended a meeting on Thursday 3 April with the Bicycle Network at the Yarra Ranges Council buildings to discuss the potential trail.

Bicycle Network Transport and Recreation Networks manager Jason den Hollander said the attendees were not only from the Yarra Glen-to-Lilydale area, but spread out throughout the Yarra Ranges. Mr den Hollander said he believed the strong attendance was a sign of support from the wider community, and that the meeting ended with the formation of a Friends of Lilydale to Yarra Glen Rail Trail group. “We’ve got a core committee

in place, and they’ll be meeting in around three weeks, he said. The proposed Lilydale to Yarra Glen Rail Trail would begin at Lilydale railway station, and travel along the former railway line to Yarra Glen. Mr den Hollander said this would not rule out a re-installation of the railway line between the two areas in the future, and that the proposal “ticked a lot of boxes for the community. He said the proposed trail, if it went ahead, would generate

jobs and create more tourist infrastructure for the Yarra Valley and its visitors. “The Lilydale to Warburton trail is already pretty busy - this one could only get better, he said. He said the next steps forward for the group would be to meet and discuss their options with other members and community stakeholders, including the council and the State Government. Mr den Hollander noted that

the government was set to release its strategy plan on rail trails in the near future, and he hoped the Lilydale to Yarra Glen proposal would be part of the plan. For more information on the proposal, visit www.bicyclenetwork.com.au. What do you think of a proposed Lilydale to Yarra Glen Rail Trail? THE search for a missing magical umbrella is the subject of a film currently being made in Marysville, with local faces set for the big screen. The Weatherman’s Umbrella is a film currently in production around the Marysville triangle area, with local singer Lily Morrow and resident Jacob Vulfs taking centre stage. The film centres on Lily’s character, Sarah, who is taken to her grandfather’s house and shortly after embarks on an adventure with a blind man (John Flaus) and his son (Jacob). Sarah finds out that the Weatherman uses magical clothing and accessories to change the weather - a scarf for wind, boots for frost and an umbrella for rain. Unfortunately, the Weatherman’s umbrella is missing, and,

film had even been inspired by sculptures in Bruno’s Sculpture Garden. Ms Richey said the cast were filming on weekends, and expected production to take around six more months, with a tentative release date of April next year. “We’re maybe a quarter of the way through, she said. She said that, with the strong local presence in the film, a special screening will be held before the film was released publicly. “We’ll certainly have a screening for the locals before anyone else sees it, she said, For more information, or updates on The Weatherman’s Umbrella and its production, visitwww.theweathermansumbrella. com.

Tread carefully if you dare to bare IS barefoot running really all it is cracked up to be? The debate that humans should be running without shoes has been around for a while now. The basic premise is that without shoes we naturally run on our toes and forefeet and that this has a much more cushioning impact than running heeltoe as we tend to do when wearing running shoes. And this is almost certainly right when running without shoes runners do instinctively avoid heel contact which is nature’s way of avoiding injury to our all important heels by landing on jagged surfaces etc. Shoes have definitely made us lazy to some degree. Some experts think that running shoes are the cause of many injuries due to how they change running style.

And for some runners they’re right. For most, however, it’s not that simple. OK, let’s just say that you are a semi-elite athlete or at least like to go out for a jog three to four times a week. If you wanted to learn to run barefoot you would need eight to 12 weeks of following a rigorous and careful training regime. The end result? You might actually run faster and even reduce your injury rate. Sounds great doesn’t it? If, however, you jog only to train or keep fit for a sport which requires shoes or footwear (football, soccer or any court sport), then forget it. You will waste time training muscles in a fashion that may actually hinder your main sport.

Another scenario, let’s say that you live in the hills (like me) and you run infrequently (like me). It would take you at least 15-20 runs over a six-week period to generate enough spring from barefoot running and you probably wouldn’t be able to run half as far as you normally would. The other thing to consider is whether there is actually anywhere in

Crying out to celebrate EXCITEMENT is really building with some fantastic announcements of events and celebrations of our 150th year starting to hit the airwaves. Last Thursday night, the Healesville 150 friends group got together to talk about all the plans and activities unfolding for the 150th party year and the roll-out is getting bigger by the minute. the hills that you could run barefoot for any distance. With all the gravel tracks and dirt roads (not to mention the possum poo and the cold!), it is hardly an attractive proposition - at the best of times, these tracks can be hazardous when wearing hiking boots, not to mention tearing along in bare feet! To negate this, some proponents of barefoot running wear these ‘barely there’ shoes which actually cost the same as normal running shoes - kind of defeats the purpose, if you ask me. Interestingly, I have treated three clients in the past year all with torn calf muscles or Achilles injuries from the springing force required in barefoot running - each was a male in the 35-50 age bracket and a ‘social’ runner.

And the predisposing factor with each of them was heavily pronating feet (rolling in) and poor calf strength. Each injury was likely a build up of tightness in the calf and lower leg from years of bio mechanical stress due to feet over-pronation, so as soon as they tried to change their running style - bang! The moral of the story is - if you want to run barefoot, make sure you’ve got the time to train for it (allow three to five sessions of 20-40 minutes a week over at least eight weeks) and sort out any strengthening issues you may have in your calves and lower leg muscles first. If you are not sure, then you know who to call to assess this! And if there are any barefoot runners out there, I’d love to hear your story.

Load of rubbish By KATH GANNAWAY SEVILLE East residents were questioning last week how a rubbish dump has been allowed to fester for six weeks on their doorstep. The Mail first spoke with residents including Barbara Pownall and daughter Lisa in mid-March, almost a month after the first dumped television set off a domino effect with truck-loads of household and hard rubbish accumulating day after day. As Yarra Ranges Council and VicRoads negotiated ownership of the site, residents continued to make their complaints with no result. VicRoads spokesperson Laura Oldfield told the Mail on 24 March they were in discussion with Yarra Ranges Coun-

cil over whose road it was and that they were working with the council “to resolve the issue in a timely manner”. Last week, they said the matter had been resolved on Friday 28 March, and they were making arrangements to have it picked up. Yarra Ranges Council told the Mail, VicRoads had finally accepted it was their road, and that the council believed the rubbish had been collected. But Mrs Pownall said the residents were sick of being the meat in a rubbish sandwich. “It’s a health hazard and whether it’s VicRoads or the council’s responsibility they (council) should have cleaned it up and worked out later who should be paying. “They just need to clean it up and argue over it later. It’s

a health hazard and a road hazard,” she said on Tuesday with no sign of any action by either party. Resident Aub Clarke said it was appalling that it had taken so long for two government agencies to work out something as simple as who is responsible for a piece of land on the corner of two prominent roadways. “They (council) can be up here in five minutes if you put a car for sale there, and it only takes them a few minutes for them to slap a fine on you,” he said. “If that was down in Seville or Lilydale it would be well gone by now,” he said. The rubbish was removed on Friday by VicRoads and Yarra Ranges Council has confirmed it has issued eight infringement notices.

Fire danger period ends amid caution should keep fire risk to a minimum. “Although the official danger period is over, we have had very little rain, and so it is still important to maintain your property in a fire safe condition and to practice safe burning off,” she said. “Residents also need to be aware of burning off restrictions.” Restrictions include a ban on fires on Sundays, on total fire ban days, smog alert days and a total ban on burning off in urban areas.

There are a number of other legal requirements, such as only burning off when wind speed is less than 15 kilometres per hour, having 10 litres of water available to douse the fire and having the fire supervised by an adult at all times. Residents can check the restrictions that apply to their areas at www.yarraranges.vic. gov.au/burningoff. Registering burn-offs with the CFA is recommended, and can be done by calling 1800 668 511 or visiting www.cfa. vic.gov.au.

MONDAY marked the end of the Fire Danger Period (FDP) in the Yarra Ranges, but the mayor has warned residents not to become complacent in the colder months. The end of the FDP came in at 1am on Monday 7 April, and residents will be able to burn off without a permit now, provided they meet the year-long burning off criteria. Mayor Fiona McAllister said that, with little rain over the summer months, residents should not become complacent over autumn and winter and

The only way Healesville can emancipate itself from the Flogger Baron mentality and face up to the immediate reality of a modern era in the face of climate change is to reject every argument they put forward to support their rapacious sucking from the public purse. They line their pockets with ill-gotten gains, give nothing back but their bloated egos boasting they are the heroes of Australia, when in fact they

Get the job done WHY is it difficult to get a tradesperson to do small jobs? I have found that most people are only interested in new projects. As a senior citizen, repair is my only way of maintaining my property. I cannot afford to pull down and rebuild but it is like finding gold

to get a job done. The most disappointing is that some tradespeople say they will come and then never turn up. I must say that the tradies over 65 are great and I thank them, but please you younger folks, you will be old one day and it is worth keeping older buildings. After all, it is part of our heritage. Now is time to speak up Comment by JESSE GRAHAM THE deadline for public comments on the proposed closure of Healesville’s tip is looming and, while closing is not a certainty, it’s time for residents to decide where they stand. Submissions can be made by the public up until Thursday 1 May - just over three weeks from today (Tuesday 8 April). After then, a decision will be made by the council on whether or not to end the service in Healesville in February 2015. The proposed closure was justified from a number of directions by the council - low visitation, close proximity to Coldstream’s tip, saving the council $900,000 over the next seven years and the environmental impacts of transporting rubbish were all cited. A number of these justifications need to be discussed and thought about, and it’s up to members of the public to decide whether the stated benefits of ending Healesville’s tip service outweigh the harm. First, visitation at Healesville’s tip is low - a meagre 3824 compared to Coldstream’s 56,753 but use of the service rose 23 per cent when compared to its 2012 visitation of 3084. It is worth noting the meteoric rise in Coldstream’s attendance over the same period, from 23,068 to 56,753 - a rise of 146 per cent. The council is indeed set to save $900,000 over seven years - a saving of $128,571.43 each year - by finishing the contract in 2015, but another motivation to close the service is that, when open, the Healesville tip doesn’t make the council a cent. The Healesville tip is contracted to Knox Transfer Station Pty Ltd, while Wesburn and Coldstream’s tips are both leased. Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis has confirmed that, as a result, the site does not generate any money for the council. In fact, the council subsidises each visit to any tip in the shire by around $55 because of the hefty EPA Landfill Levy, according to a council officer’s report.

Buzz about sustainable living ORGANISERS of Ecotopia Junction 2014 have taken their lead from the honey bee, the inspiration for this year’s festival. The ECOSS team has been abuzz. The inaugural festival in April last year was a community celebration that brought the Yarra Junction parklands to life, bringing the community into the heart of the town to learn about, celebrate and have fun around sustainable living. Having created the buzz, the festival is gearing up to be bigger and better this year. The music stage is set for a repeat of the eclectic and exciting program of local talent and the Recycled Fashion Parade will returns thanks to German fashion designer Hans Allover. There will be a hive of activity around bees and bee-keeping with information, displays and demonstrations throughout the day. Other activities and displays include a racing mountain bike display and bike maintenance station, electric car home conversion, home vegie oil car conversion, a bio char workshop, straw bale building and intentional community design workshop. The Upper Yarra Museum will be open with displays depicting the heritage of the Upper Yarra region along with a working blacksmith forge and the new children’s playground. Askate is a new event incorporating a skate clinic aimed at encouraging and enabling kids with autism to be part of the skate-park action. Fantastic market stalls, women’s, men’s and children’s tents, alternative therapies, community groups and lots and lots of very, very good food add to the colour, flavour and buzz of the festival. Ecotopia Junction 2014 is on Sunday 13 April from 10am to 4pm. For more information visit www.ecoss.org.au, email info@ecoss.org.au or phone 0435 741 490.

Car show ‘dog friendly’ By KATH GANNAWAY WHEN car enthusiast Bruce Frazer says his next car rally, the Piston Steel Shakedown is ‘dog friendly’, he means it. The charity car show on Saturday, 12 April will raise funds for Animal Aid at Coldstream. Bruce and his daughter Loretta have organised shows for various charities over the years, and he says he is keen to make this one of their best to support the great animal welfare work Animal Aid does across the Yarra Ranges. While Bruce’s particular interest is in die-cast models and other car and bike collectables, it is the real thing that will be the big attraction at the Hungarian Community Centre in Wantirna when the gates open for the 2014 Piston Steel Shakedown.

Bruce Frazer’s passion for horsepower had plenty of support at the recent Wandin Car Show. 118124_01. Picture: KATH GANNAWAY The event will run from from 2pm to 7pm with the Show and Shine featuring hot rods, classic cars and pre-1980s, live bands, a pin-up competition, children’s activities and food and drinks.

The event is alcohol-free. For more information and application forms for show cars and for stalls email loretta.frazer@hotmail.com, or like Piston Steel Shakedown on facebook.

Film makes reel difference By JESSE GRAHAM HEALESVILLE residents are being asked to watch a film and raise money for charity, with a screening of Mary Meets Mohammad at the Memo Hall on Wednesday. Healesville Country Women’s Association (CWA) have organised the screening, which will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 April, which will raise money for Lentara UnitingCare - a division of the Uniting Church. Mary Meets Mohammad is a documentary that follows the opening of Tasmania’s first detention centre, from the perspective of local Christian woman and knitter, Mary, and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker, Mohammad. Mary is strongly opposed to the asylum-seekers’ arrival in the community, but as her knitting club creates beanies for the detention centre’s residents, she

CWA member Faye van Duin said the movie discussed the currently divisive issues of asylum seekers and detention centres, showing multiple sides to the story. “We thought it was some-

Flood of inspiration MORE than just a dark, gritty take on The Bible story, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah is a remarkably daring, subversive work. The bleak locations are beautiful and the film’s rustic aesthetic draws inspiration from postapocalypic media such as The Road and Fallout. Russell Crowe is stoic and commanding as Noah, and the rest of the cast is excellent, especially Anthony Hopkins as the wise, benevolent Methuselah and Ray Winstone as the savage yet idealistic villain Tubalcain.

The low suspense of the narrative is a major problem for much of the film, as the Flood is framed as a dire threat yet takes several years to even begin. The second act is also rather uncomfortable, as it appears full of unironic religious moralising and cartoonishly evil enemies. But the third act turns this on its head, revealing Noah as a powerful allegory on religious zealotry and the cruel intolerance religion has caused. Taking the Creator’s vague quest too far, Noah comes to

believe that all humanity (including his own family) is corrupt and wicked. You soon fear the hero, and a birth is cause for intense grief, making Noah profoundly emotional and this final act justifies the entire film. Noah is therefore a Biblical adaptation critical of religion’s dogma and righteousness, and so must not be ignored. It’s uneven and drags in parts, but still riveting for its great performances, stunning visuals and its bold, confronting take on the Noah legend.

Campaign call for zero toll By JESSE GRAHAM DRIVING down the road toll will be the focus of a new campaign launched by Victoria Police, with crackdowns looming over the long weekends. The Road to Zero - It Starts with You campaign calls on all road users to take initiative to bring the state’s road toll down to zero by behaving safely on the roads and inspiring others to do so. Minister for Police, Emergency Services and Bushfire Response Kim Wells recently launched the campaign with Victoria Police and encouraged residents can use social media to share their safety messages.

By using the hashtag #roadtozero on Twitter and posting ideas for road safety on Victoria Police’s Facebook page, residents can help to shape others’ road safety habits. “The message behind this campaign is for the community to take ownership and act now - we can all play a major role in reducing road trauma,” Mr Wells said. The campaign will run from 1 April to 30 June, and ideas and stories can be posted through writing, photos and videos. The 2013 Victorian road toll reached a record low of 242. However, the current road toll currently sits at 71

- up seven deaths from the same period in 2013. In the Yarra Ranges, there have been four road deaths since the beginning of the year. In the same time period in 2013 (1 January to 3 April), there were no fatalities recorded. Over the whole of 2013, eight people died on Yarra Ranges roads - only twice the amount currently on 2014’s toll. Mr Wells said the campaign not only focuses on the damage caused by deaths on the road, but also about the community impact of serious injuries. “Although the community cost can be measured in terms of Transport Ac-

cident Commission (TAC) claims - an average of $33,000 per injury - this is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “Costs can rise into the millions if someone is seriously injured and becomes a paraplegic or quadriplegic.” Crashes in the Yarra Ranges from January to 30 August 2013 resulted in 111 people being hospitalised and making a claim to the TAC. TAC records reveal that 84 of these were stays in hospital of less than two weeks, while 27 others stayed in hospital longer. Drivers are being urged to kerb dangerous driving habits such as using mobile phones while driving, speeding

and not showing respect to other road users. Mr Wells warned that, with special police campaigns looming on the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends, as well as the Queen’s Birthday holiday, drivers can expect to see police out in force. “If you’re doing the wrong thing on the road, then expect to be stopped by police,” he said. “More than ever, we need everyone in the community to play their part, because the road to zero does start with you.” For more information, visit www. facebook.com/victoriapolice or www. vicpolicenews.com.au.

Safety rail upgrade on section of Spur By JESSE GRAHAM SAFETY is set to improve on a dangerous section of road near Healesville’s Black Spur, with a $1.1 million upgrade getting underway. Seymour MP Cindy McLeish announced last Friday that works were starting to install safety improvements along the Maroondah Highway. Services South East Pty Ltd is the contractor for the project. Ms McLeish said the works would reduce the frequency and severity of run-off-road crashes along a four-kilometre stretch from Old Fernshaw Road to the water tanks 600 metres east of Dowd Road. The highway upgrade will include 1.6 kilometres of guard fence, 130 metres of wire rope safety barrier, three kilometres of shoulder sealing, line-marking and new warning signs. “Unfortunately, we have seen a significant crash history in this area, with 18 of the 32 crashes recorded in the five years to June 2012 resulting in serious injury,” Ms McLeish said. “These measures will go a long way towards addressing that.” The road is also popular with motorcyclists, and Ms McLeish

said the new safety barriers being installed were motorcycle-friendly. Guard rails will be fitted with a secondary, protective guard sitting lower to the ground and the wire rope safety barrier posts will be cushioned to minimise damage, she said. “We have had successive record low road tolls in Victoria and we need to keep working hard to ensure that we stay a world leader in road safety,” Ms McLeish said. The Black Spur and surrounding parts of the highway are notorious for crashes, with drivers and riders often losing control in wet conditions. Police have often labelled the road as dangerous. A four-car crash in July last year, which also included a boat on a trailer, is an example of the more serious accidents seen along the Black Spur stretch of highway. The safety works follow an announcement in September last year and the funding came through the Victorian Government’s Safer Road Infrastructure Program (SRIP). The works are scheduled to be completed by mid-year.

Opinion Transfer of power THE Healesville Action Group note with considerable disappointment that the closure of the Healesville tip - or more accurately Waste Transfer Station (WTS) - is still on the agenda, despite Ryrie Ward councillor and Mayor Fiona McAllister totally opposing it. With a vote of three to five, with one councillor absent, what was surprising was that O’Shannassy Ward councillor Jim Child voted for the closure plus his further amendment for a reduction in the operating days at Wesburn WTS to four days per week, further reducing the service to the outer areas of the shire. The saving to council is alleged to be $900,000 over seven years, which equates to less than $2 per rateable property per year. As ratepayers we expect to subsidise a range of council services that we may not use directly, young families are subsidising services for senior citizens and senior citizens are subsidising services for young families and children, so what is the difference? This contract was let two years ago, with known patronage rates, if the situation has changed and it no doubt has due to the huge increase in fees, that is a commercial decision to be made by the operator, not Yarra Ranges Council (YRC). The detail of the commercial arrangement is, as usual, being kept from ratepayers, so it is very hard to ascertain who is actually suffering the financial impact, the contractor or YRC. YRC makes a big point about transparency but it is very hard to see why “confidentially” is being used in this instance, when the contract has been in place for two years? The officer report claims YRC is subsidising each visit to the order of $55, we are unable to see how this works without access to the contract detail. While it comes as no surprise that the other four councillors voted for the closure, after all it will not impact on their wards at all. This demonstrates the complete failing in the structure of Yarra Ranges Council, where there is such a diverse coverage from suburban to rural areas. The officer report states that the travel distance to Coldstream from Healesville is 16 kilometres, which means 32 kilometre round trip, times 3824 customers annually, equals 122,368 km, I would have thought that the environmentally conscious councillors that voted for the closure would have liked to see less vehicular activity, not more. I would like to urge all Healesville residents to make a submission, complaint, comment, call it what you like, to oppose this closure. It must be in writing, via mail to P O Box 105 Lilydale 3140 or email to mail@yarraranges.vic. gov.au by 1 May 2014. HAG has for some time now been very concerned that the services provided to the Ryrie and O’Shannassy Wards, along with the agricultural areas of Silvan and Monbulk, by the suburban Lilydale based YRC leave a lot to be desired. It is obvious that this current move to close the Healesville WTS and, in all probability, Wesburn a bit later on, is being driven by people who have no knowledge or interest in the rural areas and tourist towns of this shire. Perhaps it is time for some of our longer serving councillors to revisit the Local Government Act, particularly section 3c(b). It is HAG’s opinion that in light of this, investigations should be commenced promptly, with a view to separating these areas from YRC. This should be supported by YRC as they are always saying the shire is too big and they don’t have the money to look after all the area properly. John Rosser, Convener, Healesville Action Group.

Histor y buffs on board THE 2014 Crank-Up at Yarra Junction over the weekend was noisy, vibrant, laden with history, and the best ever according to local history buffs. The competition woodchop on Sunday was a highlight with local axemen joining some of Australia’s champion competitors in what has traditionally been a huge drawcard to festivals and shows in the region. With the Upper Yarra Museum and the Upper Yarra Historical Society volunteers at the heart of it all, there was plenty to do and see with the blacksmith forge firing up, displays by local community and historical groups, the Yarra Valley machinery Preservation Society’s machinery display, chain-saw carving, draught horses, timber trucks and the museum’s collection of buildings, documents and artefacts from around the region. With this year marking the centenary of the start of World War I, the UYHS’s Upper Yarra Anzacs 1914-1919 commemorative display was another important highlight that will continue to be a focus as Anzac Day approaches and beyond. The museum is open on Wednesdays and Sundays and, with barely time to take a breath between gigs, the volunteers will be back on board showcasing local history as part of Ecotopia Junction Festival 2014 next Sunday, 13 April.

Waters’ winning ways YVMDFNL ROUND one in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League kicked off in excellent weather conditions last weekend. Upwey’s spearhead Dan Waters lived the dream last Saturday after taking the mark of the day with only seconds left in the game. With Upwey five points down, Waters lined up 25 metres out after the siren on a slight angle and kicking into a fairly stiff breeze slotted through a major to get his team over the line by just one point against a gallant Healesville outfit. And, in an Under 18 game, young Olinda footballer Jake Swanson took a mark in the goal square with only seconds left. The siren sounded and young Swanson, similar to Waters slotted a goal to earn his team victory by four points over Woori Yallock. FIRST DIVISION SENIORS Upwey Tecoma 11.12 (78) d Healesville 10.17 (77) Healesville has already made its presence felt in First Division as it almost pulled off a remarkable comefrom-behind win. However, it fell just one point short, thanks to a last gasp goal from Upwey after the siren. This game started with Upwey looking the goods early as they got their lead out to 22 points at the main break. Healesville played some really good footy in the third but just could not narrow the gap as the lead stayed at 22 points going into the last quarter. Upwey’s Dan Waters was a lone hand down forward as Healesville had no answers for him as he slotted eight majors for the day in a great performance. Healesville came hard in the last quarter, slamming on six goals to hit the lead with just minutes to go. Upwey, however, clinched the game with a goal after the siren to deny Healesville a fairy tail start back into First Division. Monbulk 16.20 (116) d Warburton Millgrove 17.10 (112) This was a great contest put on by two sides looking to improve on their 2013 form. Warby shot out of the blocks early as they took a 17- point lead into the first break and did look slightly slicker than their opponents but Monbulk clawed their way back into the game in the second term with six goals-to-three and in fact took a seven point lead into half time. The third quarter was goal-for-goal and Monbulk maintained its sevenpoint advantage at the last break. The last quarter was a bit of a goal fest with

Jack Nugent from Healesville scores a point. 118255 11 goals scored, Monbulk did have its chances to put the icing on the cake, but a scoreline of 16.20 suggests a few missed opportunities which kept Warby in the game. With Muir in fine touch, booting eight for the match it was always a chance, however Monbulk was able to hold on to record a memorable fourpoint nail biting victory. Olinda Ferny Creek 15.9 (99) d Woori Yallock 6.13 (49) Defending Premiers Woori Yallock was given a rude shock by Olinda as it went down by 50 points in a performance it would rather forget. Olinda was in superb form from start to finish and it did not give Woori a look in as it extended its lead at every change and looked every bit a wellstructured disciplined unit that is going to be hard to beat. Woori did try hard in the second quarter to make a game of it, but Olinda held a 21-point lead at the half and looked every bit the winning side. Olinda pretty much dominated the play in the second half, booting seven goals-to-just-two to kickstart its season with a great win.

SECOND DIVISION SENIORS Kinglake 19.12 (126) d Yea 14.10 (94) This was a really competitive, wellfought out game by two teams looking to climb the ladder in 2014. The first quarter was a real arm wrestle with both teams booting four majors and Yea holding just a solitarypoint lead at the first change. Kinglake found some run and spread in the second term and it was rewarded for its hard work on the scoreboard with a seven-goal term as it got a 20-point buffer on Yea at half time. Yea was certainly going to make Kinglake work for its victory as it narrowed the margin to just two goals at the last break and this game was up for grabs. Kinglake looked the more experienced side in the last as it controlled the tempo of the game and by the final siren had stretched the margin out to a comfortable yet hard-fought, 32-point victory. Seville 12.19 (91) d Thornton Eildon 10.6 (66) Last year’s runner-up in Seville got one hell of a shock from the return team to the competition in Thornton Eildon who took it right up to Seville

Picture: GREG CARRICK for three quarters. Thornton looked really good early as it scooted out to a 16-point lead at the first break and making Seville look a bit complacent. Seville straightened itself up a bit in the next two quarters and grinded away at the lead and by the last change, the margin was just two points in Thornton’s favour. The last term was all Seville’s as fitness seemed to be the difference. Unfortunately, most went astray around the big sticks, booting 4.9 for the quarter but it was more than enough as Thornton only managed the one major for the term. Seville ended up running out 25-point winners after a small fright. Yarra Glen 20.17 (137) d Alexandra 12.13 (85) A terrific balanced four-quarter performance from Yarra Glen who recorded a resounding 52-point win over an Alexandra unit that was denied any real run. Yarra Glen started the better and actually shot out to a 40-point lead at half-time on the back of a six-goal second term. Alex did have enough of the ball but wasn’t using it anywhere near as good as its opponents which was costing it dearly.

The second half was very free flowing with a total of 21 goals kicked. Alex did start using the ball better, but Yarra Glen always had the answers and shared the ball brilliantly as it finished the game with 10 separate goal scorers - four of them with three majors which was the clear difference in the end. Powelltown 12.12 (84) d Yarra Junction 9.13 (67) Despite the final margin being just 17 points, Powelltown never looked like dropping this game from the outset. Powelltown got out to a 23-point lead at the first break while Yarra Junction looked second rate only managing three behinds for the quarter. The second term was more of the same, Powelly booted four goals-toone, and at half time it was Junction looking at a 41-point deficit. The second half saw a more competitive Junction, but it really didn’t threaten until late into the last quarter when it was all too late. Powelltown had done the damage early which was too much for Junction to overcome.

Thrown in for an active life CHILDREN around the hills have taken part in the Australian Government’s Active Afterschool Communities (AASC) program to try a range of free sports. The program allows children the opportunity to try a wide range of sports and other structured physical activities through a positive and fun experience. Last Thursday, as part of the seven week AASC program, a special training session for 35 Yarra Glen Primary School stu-

dents was held at Lilydale Judo Club to get a taste of the sport. Judo Victoria development officer Robyne Dawson said former state coach and Australian Judo representative Michelle Matthews coached the session. Yarra Ranges AASC regional co-ordinator Kellie McPherson said the program aims to encourage children to develop a love of sport that motivates them to join a local sporting club or school sporting team and get them and their families active for life.
