AN EASTER holiday road traffic campaign is due to launch across Brimbank and Melton roads next week as police gear up to reduce road trauma. Brimbank and Melton Police squads are heading a major twoweek operation including the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. They want to ensure motorists are doing the right thing on the roads during this high-risk period. The 13-day enforcement campaign will run from Tuesday 15 April to Sunday 27 April. Road Policing Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said motorists could expect to see both marked and unmarked police vehicles targeting all the major arterial roads over the coming weeks. “Road trauma isn’t just about people who die,” Sen Sgt Burbidge said. “It’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services

Hop to a park THE Easter School holiday festivities have begun in Brimbank with an array of activities across the municipality to get children and families hopping. St Albans youngster Eda Rose has been out and about embracing the spirit of the Easter school holidays and the great outdoors. Ranger-in-charge of Maribyrnong Valley Tim Carver said Brimbank Park was a great place for the whole family to enjoy the holidays, especially with the launch of its new Playscape area; a playground designed for children of all ages and abilities. This wheelchairfriendly park includes a number of fun spots to explore like the Bunjil Nest Tree House, the Mouse Wheel and a Giant Swing Basket as well as a path maze and sandpit and areas for bike riding, picnics and Easter egg hunts.

workers who had to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis - to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones,” He said police will implement a co-ordinated tactics targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma. “These are speed, alcohol and drug impairment, driver distraction, fatigue and seatbelts,” Sen Sgt Burbidge said. “Last year 5500 people were seriously injured in crashes,” he said. “This is an epidemic but one we believe can be avoided.” Sen Sgt Burbidge urged all drivers to plan ahead these holidays by properly preparing for trips and having frequent breaks. “Police intelligence over the past three months shows that speed and careless driving were among the leading cause of road trauma in this state,” he said. “All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.”

Road to zero By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO POLICE will saturate roads across Melbourne’s West over the next three months in a bid to reduce fatalities and injuries across the state. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill last week launched the “Road to Zero - it starts with you” campaign and urged the community to take ownership of its role in reducing road trauma. It is hoped the campaign will unite the community to work together to achieve a long-term vision of zero deaths and zero serious injuries on Victorian roads. Road to Zero, which will include at least 11 road operations, comes in the wake of a horror start to the year. Already 70 people have died - four more than this time last year. But police are reminding motorists that there is another side to the tragedy - those who

are left scarred and maimed by road trauma. In 2013, more than 5500 people were seriously injured following collisions. Mr Hill said survivors are not often spoken of. “Road trauma is not just about the people who die - it’s about the enormous impact on the community,” he said. “Everyone is affected by road trauma - from the family left behind, to the emergency services workers who have to cut people out of a wreck. “These people are not just anonymous names in the paper, they are not a statistic, they are our neighbours, our friends, they are all of us.” Mr Hill called on the community to stand together and pledge to stop the unnecessary carnage on the state’s roads. He said it is important for motorists to drive to the speed limit and conditions, stay off their mobile phones and show courtesy and respect for other

road users. Police data over the past three months reveals that speed and careless or reckless driving are among the leading causes of road deaths.Transport Accident Commission CEO Janet Dore threw her support behind the campaign and urged the community to unite. Ms Dore said for every person killed on Victorian roads, a further 20 are left with serious injuries. “These are people’s brothers, mothers, sisters and sons and, for many of them, life will never be the same,” she said. “Serious injury is the hidden toll of road trauma and each year close to 6000 Victorians are affected. “Victoria Police and TAC invite the community to join with us, to take ownership of road safety and stand together as we work towards our mission of zero road deaths and zero serious injuries.”

Just no butts around kids By YASEMIN TALAT A STATE-WIDE smoking ban has been welcomed by Brimbank City Council across all outdoor areas used by children. As of 1 April, smoking has been banned outdoors near areas commonly used by children and young people for recreational and sporting activities. The smoking bans were introduced by the Victorian Gov-

ernment to protect the health of young people and to reduce smoking rates. Under the Tobacco Act 1987, smoking is now prohibited at or within a 10 metre radius (about two car lengths) of outdoor children’s playground equipment and skate parks that are open to the public. Bans also apply to the outdoor areas of all public swimming pools and at sporting ven-

ues during under-18s sporting events. Smoking is now unlawful within these areas and could result in an on the spot fine of $144. For more information on the state-wide smoking ban visit: www.health.vic.gov.au/tobaccoreforms or contact the Department of Health at tobacco. policy@health.vic.gov.au

Soccer mums kick off new group By YASEMIN TALAT A GROUP of soccer mums have banded together to form a new women’s group for fellow soccer mums and women of the West. The Cairnlea Women’s Club, based at Cairnlea Football Club, is a newly formed social club for all women in the area. Long-time friends and former committee members of the football club, Janev Aziz, Yesim Esat, Zehra Cileli and Gulsun Yildirim have reunited to head the group, which kicked off last month with a success-

ful meet and greet session and bingo event night. “I think something like this is important for women who may not have a social outlet, or would like to expand their social circle,” club president Ms Aziz said. “This is for them, a place where they can belong.” Secretary Ms Cileli said it was time for the mums behind the players to belong to a team of their own. “Over the years through our involvement, we’ve seen all the hard work mums put in and this is a club to reward the mums,” Ms Cileli said.

Vice-president Ms Esat said she hoped the group would be embraced by women from all cultures and backgrounds and of all ages. “It’s all about women coming together and having a laugh, it’s so much fun and it gives us a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life,” Ms Esat said. Money raised through events and fundraisers organised by the volunteer based group will be donated back to the football club to support the children. For more information find “Cairnlea FC” on Facebook or visit the club on a Friday night at Furlong Rd, Cairnlea. 1086663-LN33-13

Give kids sporting chance By YASEMIN TALAT FORMER Brimbank mayor Sam David has hit out against proposed changes to the Sports Facility Hire, Licences and Leases Agreement Policy (2006), which will see an increase in fees and charges to sports clubs across the municipality. His comments come after Brimbank City Council last week launched a proposed update to the policy, which is currently being reviewed over an eight-week consultation phase. Mr David said the administrators should not overturn a decision made

by former councillors in 2005 to keep fees at a bare minimum. “We the councillors unanimously decided that we take away the rates from all the sporting clubs to enable them to help and assist the youth of Brimbank away from the streets and into the sports of their choice,” Mr David said. “I plea with administration not to make any changes to the original decision put forward by councillors,” he said. Mr David said the volunteerbased clubs would not be able to afford the increased fees and that most clubs were already struggling

to keep up with other fees. He said the lower fees should be kept part of council budget and seen as an investment into the future of developing good citizens. The council’s community wellbeing director Neil Whiteside said the recommendations as part of the draft were important steps to ensure equity across sporting clubs and to gain broader community engagement. He said under the new policy clubs in Brimbank would still pay less than clubs in surrounding municipalities and that council would offer incentives to help reduce fees.

“It is important to note that under the current policy, clubs today pay only a minimal peppercorn fee of $160 a year that is significantly less than industry standards,” Mr Whiteside said. Brimbank Council is holding two information sessions on Thursday 10 April and Monday 14 April at the Visy Cares Hub Sunshine to provide details of the policy changes. Feedback on the draft policy can be submitted to the council by 21 May, prior to further consideration by council.

Pool closed for roof safety fix ST ALBANS Leisure Centre indoor pool facilities will close temporarily this month for roof repairs. Residents and users of the pool facilities have been given a heads up that the pool facilities will close for up to six weeks for essential safety works to be carried out to the indoor pool hall roof. The works are expected to be undertaken between April and June, but the dates are yet to be confirmed. During this time there will be no access to the pool deck, including the toddler pool, spa and sauna. Swimming lessons will also halt during this time and will recommence when the pool is re-opened. The gymnasium, group fitness room, creche and change rooms will not be affected by the works and will remain open for business as usual. While the pool is closed, those wishing to swim can access the pool facilities at Sunshine Leisure Centre. Roo killings leave shocked rescuers fuming By YASEMIN TALAT

“People think if they want to go out and do a bit of hunting that kangaroos are fair game,” she said. “They are shot with bows and arrows, they are rounded up and slaughtered ... it’s a daily thing for our organisation to hear about these things.” Ms Sutterby said kangaroos were family-orientated animals and would suffer severely when their family members were killed or hurt. “When one of them dies the rest of them suffer, particularly the joeys who need their mums for 18 months

and they can’t survive without her,” Ms Sutterby said. The juvenile kangaroo found in Keilor, although not shot, died from shock several hours later at the Wildabout Wildlife Rescue Centre. Kangaroos are protected under law across Australia, including Victoria, and those caught killing kangaroos illegally could face hefty fines, Ms Sutterby said. Anyone with information is urged to contact the association on 0410 745 793 or 0417 354 408 or the police.

KANGAROOS have been found shot dead with their ears cut off in Keilor raising concern for the safety of the Australian icon. The Australian Society for Kangaroos is calling on the public to come forward with any information surrounding the illegal killings of kangaroos across Keilor over the last few weeks. A fortnight ago Wildlife Victoria was contacted to rescue a juvenile kangaroo which was frightened for its life after being shot at.

The juvenile kangaroo was found by the volunteer rescuers, Julieanna and Gerti Kita, lying next to a buck, which had been shot dead and had his ears cut off. The Keilor local who made the call told rescuers that he had seen several kangaroos shot dead in the area. President of the Australian Society for Kangaroos Nikki Sutterby said people’s attitudes towards kangaroos had to change. “The attitudes towards kangaroos are so appalling in this country,” Ms Sutterby said.

Follow Emma, the young leader By ALESHA CAPONE A ST ALBANS Secondary College student has been selected to attend a prestigious leadership conference in Sydney. Emma Kiernan, 16, will attend the UBS Young Women’s Leadership Academy at Sydney University this month. The five-day program introduces Year 11 students to a group of female leaders and offers leadership skills development. Emma has been selected from applicants across the ACT, NSW and Victoria to take part in the academy. “I feel very honoured to be able to attend and especially because the school chose me to apply,” she said. “Only one girl from each school could be picked to apply – but then to be chosen for the actual event was unbelievable.

If you’re able to voice what other people maybe can’t or don’t have the confidence to, then that can get you a lot of respect… Emma Kiernan

“What I’m looking forward to is just meeting all the other girls, finding out why they wanted to come, finding out their inspirations and gaining new ideas and ways to improve my leadership. “I just feel very blessed I was given this opportunity and I’m definitely going to do my best.” Emma has a strong history of leadership roles at St Albans Secondary College, where she has been an SRC member for the past three years and captain of the netball team for five years.

“I would say one of my biggest inspirations is Oprah – I think what she has done, how many times she was knocked back and then gone on to achieve so much – is wonderful,” Emma said. “It proves if you have that determination to success, you can do anything.” Emma said the qualities needed to be a good leader include confidence and compassion. “If you’re able to voice what other people maybe can’t or don’t have the confidence to, then that can get you a lot of respect,” she said.

A life-saving swim By YASEMIN TALAT A TAYLORS Lakes swim school is making waves with a new swimming program to help children with cystic fibrosis. Paul Sadler Swimland has joined forces with Cystic Fibrosis Victoria to introduce ‘CFV Kids Swimming Lesson Program’ to their pools. The program is set to financially assist families and ensure children living with cystic fibrosis are enrolled into lifesaving swimming lessons. Manager of Paul Sadler Swimland Taylors Lakes and swim teacher Ebony Matthews

hoped more local families would take advantage of the program. “I think it’s important for families with kids with cystic fibrosis to take up this offer because swimming has a huge range of health benefits for the kids,” Ms Mathews said. “And its important for us to be able to offer the discount to families and give them the financial support to provide something that has such great health benefits,” she said. Swimming has been recognised as helping children with cystic fibrosis. The partnership between

The students also learnt to sing Italian songs including, “That’s Amore” and wrapped up the wedding and the term, dancing the day away. “We’ve got very diverse school in terms of cultures, so we have been talking about multiculturalism and we have spoken about other celebrations that different cultures have as well,” she said.

Teacher Shanna De Brincat said it was a fun way for the children to embrace Italian culture given that the language was a LOTE subject at school. “We have an Italian-themed day every year and this year the theme is an Italian wedding,” Ms De Brincat said. “It’s important for our school to embrace the LOTE that we learn here and it’s a way to encourage the students to be enthusiastic about learning other languages and learning about other cultures,” Ms De Brincat said. the Swimland and Cystic Fibrosis Victoria acknowledged that swimming was particularly good for developing lung capacity and maintaining cardiopulmonary fitness, which could slow the progression of the condition. And swimming also helped to maintain bone density and general well-being, which was also of great importance for people with cystic fibrosis. Youth leaders awarded By YASEMIN TALAT

OVER a dozen young people were recognised for their contribution to the community and dedication to their education at the Gorton Young Leaders Award ceremony last week. Federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor presented 14 graduates from the Gorton electorate with Young Leader Awards at a ceremony held at his Caroline Springs electorate last Wednesday. The Gorton Young Leader Awards, now in its fifth year, recognises the hard work and community service of recently graduated high school students in the electorate.

“I give my heartfelt congratulations to these young men and women,” Mr O’Connor said. “Each recipient here has distinguished themselves as future leaders through their commitment to their education and their community,” he said. The Gorton young leaders, who graduated from seven different schools across the electorate, were acknowledged for their volunteer work and efforts to help local causes which included volunteering for St John Ambulance and leading fundraising activities for HeartKids. Also among them were former school captains and members of student leadership groups.

PET OWNERS across Brimbank are being reminded to finalise animal registrations this week. The Domestic Animals Act 1994 requires any dog or cat three months of age or over to be registered each year, and this year’s registrations are due by Thursday 10 April. Brimbank City Council has reminded residents that failing to register a dog or cat is a breach of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and could attract a fine. And all dogs and cats registered for the first time must also be micro-chipped and de-sexed. Pet owners have also been urged to ensure registration tags are worn on the collar of the pet at all times. Animal registration forms can be downloaded from www.brimbank.vic.gov.au or picked up at Brimbank Council customer service centres. For more information visit the website or call 9249 4000.

AS THE Easter holidays quickly approach, it’s worth taking time to reflect on ways to spend some quality time with your children, say experts. “We live in a busy world that often involves scheduled activities that have us hurtling through our days. From school drop-off to sports activities, parties, after-school events, then squeezing in homework, it often feels like we are on a fast train from week to week,” says Jocelyn Brewer, child psychologist. Jocelyn says that school holidays are a perfect opportunity to take time away from our busy schedules and re-connect with our children. “Young children can really benefit from the change of pace that school holidays offer. Staying in PJ’s until mid-morning, baking healthy snacks, reading aloud, exploring museums and local parks, provides balance and grounding, giving children time to unwind from the busy term-time routine,” she says. Jocelyn says that while keeping on top of daily household tasks is important, it’s also worth letting some of these routine chores go during holiday time to enjoy connecting with your children through simple pleasures and past-times.

There are plenty of fun activities to share with your kids. “Children connect with their siblings and parents through play. Calming craft activities that involve making, modelling, colouring, sticking and gluing can be totally absorbing and are a great way to enjoy family time together,” says Jocelyn. “Writing and designing an Easter card is a great way to encourage little ones to practise their handwriting at home. Jocelyn points out that many children will share information, thoughts and feelings while absorbed in creative and craft activities and this provides an opportunity to enjoy a relaxed dialgoue that can help you communicate and connect with your children. Jocelyn recommends look-

ing on-line or in your local newsagency for inspiring craft activities and affordable equipment such as glue, scissors, paper and coloured pens. “Kids love the Frixion range of erasable pens and felt tip markers because they can easily rub out any mistakes without having to start all over again. They are fun to use and come in a wide choice of colours. For some fabulous Easter craft activities to download, check out the Pilot Pen website. Children can enjoy making their own Easter bonnet and have fun colouring in Easter bunnies,” says Jocelyn. Visit: www.pilotpen.com.au for more information.

Unique Easter traditions in Oz JUST like the rest of the world, Easter traditions in Australia are quite unique. Usually associated with new beginnings and the start of spring, an Australian Easter however is celebrated in March/April in early autumn

unlike other Northern hemisphere countries, where Easter falls in the springtime. Traditionally, the Easter celebrations begin with Shrove Tuesday and ends with Whitsun.

During celebrations, Australians observe a host of rituals like Pancake Day with pancake races, fill up on hot cross buns and hunt for Easter eggs. Unlike other places where the Easter Bunny is esteemed

highly, the Aussies deem the rodent-like symbol as a bad omen. A fictional rodent called ‘Easter bilby’ is the main Easter symbol. The reason why bunny rabbit was replaced by bilby is that, the bunny rabbit is reported to have destroyed the agricultural crops. The ‘Easter bilby’ takes away all the limelight in the celebrations. Easter celebrations encompass church prayers, Easter bilby and not to forget, the

brightly coloured Easter eggs. It is a time for family gatherings. To share the Easter meal with relatives is one of the important traditions. This meal generally consists of roasted lamb, beef or chicken along with roasted vegetables like potatoes, carrots and pumpkin. Many families play Easter hunt among themselves wherein the hunt is to take place inside homes or gardens and the kids

are put to the task of hunting for eggs. The game ends with rewarding the kid who finds the maximum number of eggs. In the reservoir of games, the hot favourite game is egg knocking. The last, but definitely not the least of the great traditions of Easter is the preparation of hot cross buns. These include dried fruit raised with yeast or a simple mixture of flour and water is what follows the ritual.

Under the proposed policy, the new agreements will signiicantly beneit the Brimbank community and clubs as they will focus on clubs actively engaging with the entire Brimbank community to provide participation opportunities in addition to covering the operational requirements of clubs and Council. High level consultation with sports clubs has taken place over a number of years at Club Development Network meetings regarding the need for an updated policy relating to lease and licence agreements and associated user fees and charges. Council will consult further over April and May 2014 with sports clubs on the Policy and associated Guidelines.

IN THE span of nine months, James Hogg has progressed from modest weekend basketballer to elite junior sprinter. The 14-year-old Keilor runner gave athletics a go after a severe finger injury forced him away from the hoops. Hogg snapped the tendon in his right ring finger and required a tendon graft, bringing his basketballing exploits to a halt. “My dad and I were just playing basketball and he had a shot and I jumped up to grab the rebound and my finger got weaved into the net and got tangled,” Hogg explained. “As I’ve come down it’s pulled my finger and instead of breaking the bone or anything, it snapped the tendon in my finger. So I couldn’t play for a few months.”

Quickly realising a busted finger means hardly anything if you’re fast, Hogg switched his attention to the track and has since become one of Australia’s most promising young sprinters. At his first state all-schools championship event at Albert Park in October, Hogg blitzed the field to win the 100m title in 11.55 seconds, before following up in the 200m with a 23.45 - good enough for his second gold. Soon Hogg was up in Townsville competing at the national all-schools event - where as a bottom-ager he added two bronze medals to his growing collection in the 200m and the 4x100m relay. Come the turn of the calendar Hogg was at it again, with another state championship gold in the 200m in February. And as recently as last month at the Australian junior championships, Hogg

completed his stunning start to his running career with gold and bronze in the 200m and 100m events respectively. “I’m very, very surprised. I didn’t think I’d come this far in such a short time,” Hogg said. “I look at the other kids and how they’ve trained nearly all their lives to get to where I am, but I’ve gotten to where I am in five months which has really surprised me and shocked me. “As I started I knew I was quick but I never thought state or national level would come so fast. It’s just amazing.” Basketball has now become a hobby of the past as Hogg looks to take his talents across the world. With an eye for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Hogg now hopes to break the 22-second barrier in the 200m and lower his 100m personal best time to 10.8.

Gully sinking fast By ADEM SARICAOGLU A COSTLY first half saw a nine-man Green Gully sink to its second consecutive National Premier Leagues loss against South Melbourne on Saturday. In a crazy eight-goal thriller, South Melbourne shot out to a four-goal buffer in the first half as the Cavaliers had no answer for Milos Lujic - who had already completed his hat-trick within the first half-hour. Jamie Reed then made it 4-0 in the 31st minute to completely silence the home Green Gully supporters. “I think in the first half we certainly weren’t there at all,” Green Gully football manager Raymond Mamo told Star afterward. “It just felt like we didn’t even turn up for the game in the first half, so I don’t know what was going on but it was very disappointing.” Come the change of ends after the interval and the Cavaliers’ fortunes took a turn for the better. Dangerous attacker Mathew Sanders found the back of the net twice within the first five minutes of the restart to bring Green Gully back into the contest. But still down two goals,

Green Gully’s plight remained an uphill battle. Goalkeeper Kieran Gonzalez was given his marching orders shortly after the hourmark after bringing down South Melbourne’s Lujic. Twenty minutes later Stephen Downes joined Gonzalez for an early exit - seeing red for dissent close to injury time. Still, life was breathed into the contest when Rodrigo Vargas - already on a yellow card himself - slotted Green Gully’s third in the 91st minute. However, South Melbourne quickly had an answer through substitute Leigh Minopoulos, whose goal sealed the 5-3 win. “It was a great comeback,” Mamo said. “I think we need to put this one behind us but the only thing you can really take away from the game is that the guys can come back. “We have got a good team and we showed it in the second half, so I think that’s the only little thing we can take away from the game. But it’s certainly one you need to put behind you and move on.” Green Gully will try to redeem its early season troubles Green Gully stopper Kieran Gonzalez was sent off in away to Oakleigh on Friday Saturday’s 5-3 drubbing. 98777 night. Lions at their best shorts Sports

By LIAM TWOMEY

ST ALBANS coach Marcus Barclay has labelled Deer Park one of the best sides he has seen in local football after the Lions topped the Saints by 65 points last week. In what is now the traditional opening to the Division One season, Deer Park took a 15-point lead into quarter time and continued to pull away. With the margin increased to 41 at the half-time break, the Saints did their best to slow the juggernaut. St Albans won the third term by a point before the Lions regrouped for one last charge. Deer Park finished with four goals in the final term to seal the 15.13 (103) to 5.8 (38) win. “They were close to the best local football side that I have seen in many years,” Barclay said. “What they have got on the park, it is just better than what local footy has ever seen. Even the guys that played in the premiership last year who weren’t AFL/ VFL, the local players, they have even sort of got better with better players around them. It is a bit scary. “As far as what we can take out of it, we are not sure. A 10-goal loss is a 10-goal loss but whether that is the Deer Park blueprint for the whole year, I guess we don’t know.” In his first game back at Deer Park since stepping down as head coach after the 2012 season, James Condos was straight back into the thick of the action on his way to a bag of five goals. He was well supported by first game recruit James Wong who kicked two. Around the ground, Kwame McHarg and Heath Ayres were among Deer Park’s best players. For St Albans, Lachlan Baddeley and Dion Lawson were the Saints’ only multiple goal kickers with two each. Both Deer Park and St Albans will enjoy eight-day breaks before their respective round two clashes this week with the Lions set to take on Werribee Districts while the Saints will meet Albion. “They (Albion) played well against Altona (in round one) so they will take a lot of confidence out of that. For us it is important for the fact that we would like to be 1-1. “We beat Albion twice last year. I would assume they have improved since then. They have got an expremiership captain as coach. He is a good man Aaron Tymms and I’m sure they will come out 100 miles an hour and it will be good to see what we have taken out of last Friday night’s game.”

Bears claw win in battle of the new By ADEM SARICAOGLU

Dean Borg celebrates one of his four goals for Burnside Heights on Saturday. 118105 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

BURNSIDE Heights marked its entry into the senior ranks of the Essendon District Football League with a stirring 19-point win over East Sunbury on Saturday. In a see-sawing battle that pitted the EDFL’s two newest and to that point - only winless clubs, Shane Rayment’s Bears found a way to get on top in the second half after trailing by 16 points at quarter time. Six goals to one in the second term restored momentum for the Bears to establish a 20-point half-time buffer, but East Sunbury managed to peg that back to nine by the final change. In a game that saw Dean Borg kick four goals for Burnside Heights, the Bears came home strongly on their home deck to register their first win as a senior entity. Coach Rayment told Star

afterward of the significance of his side’s historic triumph. “It was like we won a grand final,” Rayment said. “There was a little bit more cheer than what you’d normally get for a first-round win from my experience but that just shows how passionate the boys are and how passionate the club is about the trek we’re on. “The boys stuck to the task and I said to them before the game it wasn’t about the win, it was just about the journey and to enjoy it and to understand it was going to be hard work out there today. “And it was proven to be the case because East Sunbury certainly didn’t ease up and we had to earn it.” Simon Paris managed to snare two goals for the Bears and shared best-on honours with Borg. Also impressive were Stephen Kenrick, Matthew Italiano, Leigh Richardson and

Jordan Agnoleto. Rayment is acutely aware Saturday’s win came against the league’s easy-beats, and was quick to remind his players in the aftermath there remains some massive challenges ahead. This weekend Burnside Heights will take their first road trip to Roxburgh Park who handsomely took care of a more-fancied Keilor Park outfit with an impressive 73-point belting. After that the Bears will face Division Two contenders Moonee Valley and Coburg Districts. “While the win was fantastic and we’ll enjoy it, we’ll certainly come back next week and get to work on Roxburgh Park,” Rayment said. “They’re up and about so the boys are going to see the other side of the coin of what football’s about - but we’ll look to be competitive.”

AFL Victoria has announced the introduction of a new VFL Multicultural Ambassador program for 2014. Following the successful model the AFL has run with various players over recent years, five Peter Jackson VFL players - David Mirra (Box Hill Hawks), Adam Marcon (Williamstown), Peter Faulks (Williamstown), Joel Wilkinson (Northern Blues) and Gatluak Johnson (Coburg) - will help assist AFL Victoria with multicultural development initiatives and programs that currently exist across participation, community, fans, engagement and talent. The role of the new ambassadors will vary, from providing participation opportunities for the community, to being involved in talent academies for multicultural and indigenous participants. AFL Victoria engagement manager Xavier Moloney said VFL clubs were asked to nominate players for the positions, with others selected from previous involvement in multicultural programs. “The major aim for the ambassadors is to help increase engagement and awareness of what AFL Victoria do in the community, and in particular the TAC Cup and VFL. “It also provides the players with professional development in our programs,” Moloney said. “The varied backgrounds of each player will help with interacting with the communities they will be involved in.” The number of multicultural players within Victoria’s State league competition is also something the new ambassador program is aiming to increase. Williamstown this year has introduced a multicultural advisor, Jiaming (Jamie) Pi, who will be working closely with the club in the lead up to its Multicultural Community Day on Sunday April 13, and when the club hosts the China national team at the International Cup in August this year. Werribee too has appointed a multicultural development officer in Majok ‘Shaggy’ Ngong. The club is also involved with running the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project, which encourages youth from ethnic or diverse cultural backgrounds to get involved in all sport. IT WAS a tough start to the new Western Region Football League season for YarravilleSeddon after the Eagles were smashed by Sunshine on Saturday. Playing under new coach Jesse Smith, the Yarraville players were under constant pressure from the opening bounce as the Kangaroos slammed on eight goals in the opening quarter. The Eagles had to wait until the second term to register their first major but even that did nothing to stop the Sunshine charge to victory. The 83-point half-time major increased to 106 at three quarter time and 127 at the final siren to complete the 24.19 (163) to 5.6 (36) smashing. On what was a difficult day, Andrew Willis and Giles Guest tried hard for Yarraville to be named among the Eagles’ best players. Up forward, Duane Vella was the only multiple goal scorer with two majors. Yarraville will look to bounce back this week when it hosts its first home game of the season against the Port Melbourne Colts in round two. Elsewhere in the WRFL, West Footscray started the new season with a bang, smashing Braybrook by 123 points in division two results. After crossing over from Glen Orden in the off-season, Damien Yze was the star for the Roosters, booting 12 goals.

Akon wants baggy green Jets in slow climb By ADEM SARICAOGLU AKON Mawien firmly has his eyes locked onto what every Australian cricketer craves that famous baggy green cap. A South Sudanese refugee, Mawien and his family fled to Australia via Kenya a decade ago and have now established themselves in Derrimut. Still at the tender age of 16, Mawien forced his way into Sunshine Heights’ senior VTCA West B1 team and had a summer that could well have been the first stepping stone in the young quick’s journey to the top. Sunshine Heights went on to win the West B1 title against local rival Sunshine United but would not have had the opportunity to play off for the crown if it hadn’t been for Mawien’s impressive bowling during the season. Mawien consistently caused headaches for opposition batsmen and by season’s end everyone within the division knew of his lethal talents, claiming 31 wickets for just 200 runs with an average of 6.5. His economy rate of 1.6 was just as impressive. It appears Mawien made the right choice with cricket - a sport not all that popular among his friends with similar heritage. “The seniors was pretty much a big step for me, first of all filling in as a 13 and 14-yearold and now playing full-on is a

tion batsmen with his pace and the extra bounce that he gets. “He’s got the potential to be a real tearaway quick. He can now actually swing the ball both ways and I think that’s a weapon that a lot of fast bowlers don’t have.” Mawien has taken part in numerous elite pathways programs but will face a whole new set of challenges next summer when he fronts up for Premier Cricket’s newest champion, Footscray Edgewater. With the dream of one day playing for Victoria and even Australia, Mawien can’t wait to see what he can do for the Bulldogs come October and beyond. “That makes me proud and makes me feel that all my hard work’s paid off and now I want to work even harder,” he said.

WESTERN Jets coach Torin Baker was pleased to see an improved performance from his boys despite giving up a sevengoal lead in a loss to Oakleigh on Sunday. The Jets led at every change and looked to be in control at North Port Oval, but the fastfinishing Chargers stormed home with four of the five goals scored in the final quarter to snatch a seven-point win. Two late Oakleigh goals in time-on and some crucial Jets skill errors led to what proved the match-winning lead, handing the latter their third successive loss to start the TAC Cup season. However, Baker was upbeat after the game, telling Star his undermanned side showed plenty of good signs - particularly in the first half. “I was really pleased with our performance,” Baker said. “We’ve got a number of our best players out at the moment and to produce that sort of effort at the start was really commendable for the group. I thought we were really hungry, really desperate and I thought Oakleigh changed the way the game was being played. “They put some numbers behind the ball and we made some errors and allowed them to get back in the contest. I’m really proud of the boys but obviously there were some things in the last quarter that we’ll address.” In a side that was missing

Corey Ellis was again a standout for the Western Jets on Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI Sunday. 105187 hasn’t had a lot of exposure to TAC footy, so to come in and play like he did was excellent.” Vujanic looked good at full forward while Monk was impressive through the midfield. Dillon Viojo, Harley Armstrong-Weston, Braden Ferrari and Ryley Stuhldreier also played well on the day. The Jets are still winless after what has been a difficult draw for the first three weeks of the season, but will be hoping to develop some winning form against the Northern Territory this Sunday.

Liam Duggan, Duom Dawam, Liam McMahon and Caleb Sullivan, usual suspects Corey Ellis and Connor Menadue again did their draft prospects no harm. Also impressive were lesserknown Jets Brayden Monk (one goal and named the Jets’ best) and Tylar Vujanic (three goals). “Brayden Monk was a player playing in his second game in TAC football and he was an outstanding contributor for us,” Baker said. “Vujanic was a real find today. “He got injured midway through his first game so he

big challenge for me, but I enjoy it,” Mawien said. “I used to play soccer but then cricket was just a new thing. No-one else was playing it so I thought why not. “No other Sudanese kids were playing it, so I played it. I thought I’d just try it out and I enjoyed it, so I stuck at it.” Sunshine Heights coach Matthew Shawcross enjoyed a front row seat to the ‘Akon Show’ all summer long, and can see the young paceman going a long way. “He’s had a massive impact,” Shawcross said. “Akon played a massive role for us throughout the year. He was the bowler we’d turn to whenever we were in trouble. “He was definitely playing the role of our strike bowler and intimidated a lot of opposi-

A fine time in Tiger territory GREAT to see two local football clubs create some history last weekend. The Tarneit Tigers made their debut as a senior and junior club in the WRFL and did so in style. Congratulations to Sue Thornton and her committee and all the volunteers who were part of an historic weekend. The seniors played North Sunshine and won handsomely and then on Sunday the juniors played. The WRFL senior debut of Werribee Districts was another highlight with the Tigers playing Hoppers Crossing. The rivalry between these two clubs has been confined to their junior ranks over the years but it finally involved the seniors last Saturday at Soldiers Reserve. Werribee took the points despite some inaccurate kicking for goal. It was a bold move by Werribee to leave the VAFA and join the WRFL but one I think will be good for the future of the club. They have been a very successful club at both senior and junior levels and not that both are in the same competition I can see a platform for even more success. WERRIBEE Centrals are a club in a similar position to Disctricts in many ways. Their juniors play in the WRFL but their seniors play in the GDFL. The reality is while they rake in funds from the GDFL that is where they will stay. A point made very clearly when their juniors joined the WRFL over a decade ago. The week they play their first home game for 2014 against Anakie, and will be unveiling their new digital scoreboard. They have recruited well this year and will be a real threat in the GDFL with the likes of Jason Butty, Ben Fletcher and the Montebruno brothers running around. The club though has turned over a lot of players (45) which is a concern for football in general. It is a constant battle for clubs to retain players for a number of reasons. Local sporting clubs are the backbone of the community and we need them to be healthy and viable. We have enough trouble on the streets as it is. ONE area of football that is a concern is the drop off in numbers at under-18 level. Some clubs are combining so they can field a team in this age group, which is not good. While it was a long time ago, I dropped out of sports at 17 due to work - as did a lot of my mates - and that is still the case for many but there appears to be a bigger decline in recent years. Sport is a big commitment when you add up training, match day, social functions and travel it does not leave a great amount of time for much else if you factor school, uni and work in as well. I don’t have the answer to this but I know it is a concern that is going to become a problem. It is almost as if we have the elite under-18 program and everyone outside that becomes a spectator rather than a participant. Your thoughts are welcome. ON a positive note, my son Hayden is back at Auskick and what a great experience that is for young boys and girls and their parents. While it might be tough for some to give up their Saturday morning the payoff is well worth it. I think the cost is very fair. The kids get a backpack with a footy and other things and they get 90 minutes of free training for 15 Saturdays for $72. I know some might struggle with that and I understand that, but I see it as an investment in my son’s future. The program is structured well and run very professionally with an emphasis on participation rather than being the next Brad Johnson or Cyril Rioli. I thank those volunteers at every centre, and Wyndham alone has 10, who give their time every week. The kids appreciate it and certainly the parents do.

VU Western Lightning coach Matt Hills said there were some positives to come out of his team’s loss to the City West Falcons. 85049 Picture: MATHEW LYNN

Lightning fizzles out By LIAM TWOMEY FOR the second time this season, VU Western Lightning walked away from the Western Suburbs netball derby empty-handed after being beaten by City West Falcons on Wednesday night. However, the nine goal 48-39 Falcons’ win was a lot closer than it looked on paper. The Lightning took it up to their more highly-fancied opponents for three quarters, but paid the price for a second term fade-out. After taking a two-goal lead into the opening break, City West dominated the second quarter and blew the margin out to 10 goals.

There was no coming back for the Lightning who continued to battle hard in the second half. City West coach Matt Hills said there was a mix of positives and frustration to come out of the match. “We turned the ball over or we gave them 18 balls in the first half,” Hills said. “A lot of that was from a combination of poor decision-making or more importantly, poor execution. That really hurt us. “In the second half we only turned the ball over in that vein nine times. “I think that shows there are some keys areas to work on. They

have now won eight straight and I think we are the first team to hold them to a single-digit margin. There are some positives to come out of that but we have still got some work to do.” The result continues City West’s dominance over the Victorian Netball League competition. The Falcons are yet to lose a game and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 7-0 record. Meanwhile VU has now slipped outside the top four and holds a 4-3 win loss record. Teams will get to enjoy a week off before round eight of the season begins next week.

The Lightning will take on Yarra Valley in what is shaping up to be a must-win clash. “It is a very tight competition between third and eighth so we can’t afford to be losing too many more games as we move forward,” Hills said. “It is extremely important now. We have got two weeks to work solidly on our line-ups. We can really get working. “We need to be at our best. They (Yarra Valley) beat us a couple of weeks ago and we need to turn that result around. It is really a must-win game.”
