Glory down the decades OVER 150 years in operation, the Williamstown Football Club has undoubtedly experienced its ups and downs. Many of its members can testify to the club’s hard times but many more can speak of its glory years - and there were plenty. The Williamstown Football Club was formed in 1864. Other clubs at the time were Melbourne, Geelong, South Yarra, Carlton, Albert Park, Royal Park, Brunswick, University, Warehouseman’s, Kyneton, Ballarat, Hotham and Belfast (Port Fairy). Games were organised on a fairly ad hoc arrangement and the Victorian Football Association was formed on 7 May 1877.
Williamstown was granted “senior status” in 1884 and joined the VFA. South Williamstown was also in the VFA at that time, but the two local teams never met. They merged in 1888 and Williamstown’s original colours of black and yellow were changed to blue and gold. Williamstown Football Club has won a premiership in each decade of the 1900s except the second - 1907, 1921, 1939, 1945, 1949, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1959, 1969 (Second Division), 1976 (Second Division), 1986, 1990. Each of these Premierships hold special memories for the club - the 1939 flag followed one of the worst years in the club’s history - 1938 Williamstown
finished last in the competition and was on the brink of disaster. It had also finished last in 1934 and 35 and near last in 1933, 36 and 37. However two men, Dooley and Floyd, decided on a bold and daring recruiting raid of the VFL and hired Ron Todd - probably one of the greatest players ever in the competition - and Des Fothergill to turn disaster into great success. The teams of the ’50s were skilful and well coached by Wally Carter and Gerry Callahan. The string of premierships that followed was fair reward for an era of good management and hard work. Then Williamstown slumped and by the middle of the ’60s was headed for Second Division at the end of 1967. Max Papley - Best and Fairest at South Melbourne - was appointed captain and coach and after losing the Grand Final in 1968 went on to win promotion to First Division - no
mean feat. Papley was a fine player and an excellent coach who left his mark on Williamstown and the VFA. After two Grand Final defeats by Coburg in 1988 and 1989, Williamstown overcame great odds to win the 1990 Premiership against Springvale. Great memories captured in full living colour for everyone to see and re-live. The 1990 Premiership was the most satisfying of them all - won in the face of tremendous odds. Appearing to finish runners-up for the third consecutive year, the events in the last quarter almost defied belief. Williamstown has proved a great training ground for coaches as well as players over the years. It has a great reservoir of committed people who will see the club succeed for many years to follow.

Milestone Hall of Fame THE Williamstown Football Club boasts a rich history being the fourth oldest footy club in Australia. Its membership reaches far and wide and as a tribute to the hundreds of local men and women who have contributed to the last 150 years, the club will mark the milestone with an inaugural Hall of Fame celebration. At the 31 May event at Crown Casino the club will announce 51 inductees into the Hall of Fame comprising players, coaches, administrators and volunteers.
Chief executive Brendan Curry says the event will be a chance to reflect on the efforts of those who have made the club the institution that it is in Williamstown. “We want to tell the stories of the Williamstown Football Club. We want to tell people of the present about what the club would have been like in 1854. The event celebrates everyone who has gone before. Plenty of people who have been in this chair before me have taken the club to where it is now. We need to recognise them and celebrate their achievements.”
To mark the milestone, a commemorative jersey will be worn and adorned with the names of 405 life members and players as well as a special 150th anniversary crest. The Hall of Fame is proudly sponsored by accounting firm Seiva whose owner Brent Szalay has played for the club most of his life. “I’ve been born and bred in Williamstown and have played for the club for the best part of 34 years. I had a brief break from the club, but when I returned to Williamstown it was like I never left.
People I had played with years earlier and people who belonged to the club were still there and it was a great feeling,” Mr Szalay said. “For a football club to be around as long as Williamstown has, it means a lot to a lot of people,” he said. “It’s a tremendous honour to be able to support the Hall of Fame as a major sponsor and give back to the club that’s given me so much.” For more information, visit the club’s website www.williamstownfc.com.au.

WILLIAMSTOWN Seagulls Football Club’s annual Multicultural Community Day is a pioneering initiative which aims to forge greater links between the club and Melbourne’s various ethnic communities. The 13 April Multicultural Community Day celebrations will include the ‘Big Game’ - Williamstown Seagulls versus Footscray Bulldogs, 2pm start, the ‘Asia Cup’ contested between the Dragons, a team comprising mainly Asian Australians, versus the “Western All-Stars”. Lion Dance will entertain the crowd at half time of the Senior Game and Asian Food trucks Lil Nomnoms and White Guy Cooks Thai will be on site. In 2013, the Board of the Williamstown Football Club decided to sponsor the South China Australian Football League (SCAFL) for two years. On the back of its SCAFL sponsorship, Williamstown will host the China Red Demons, China’s national Australian Rules football team, at this year’s AFL International Cup. The man charged with nurturing these ties is multi-cultural adviser Jiaming (Jamie) Pi. He is a first generation Chinese Australian and has played for

Jamie describes one of his main roles as being available to the football club in a capacity which bridges the gap between the club and other ethnic communities. “We are hoping that this visit with the South China league will promote and endorse Australian Football to the Chinese community. “I’ve been involved in the club since I was a youngster and joined to make friends and get to know my community a bit better. It was a great way to get involved and I’d encourage other minority groups to do the
same. Australian football is a great game and a great way to meet people and have fun.” As in 2013, this year’s Multicultural Community Day will focus on stimulating greater interest in Australian Rules within Melbourne’s rapidly growing Asian community. One in 10 Australians is now of Asian descent. However, the participation rate of Asian Australians in Australian Rules football remains low. As a direct result of the club’s sponsorship, close to 100 Chinese athletes are now playing Aussies Rules in South China.

Club foots Chinese players’ bill The South China Australian Football League (SCAFL) is an AFL-endorsed Australian Rules football competition located in Southern China. As part of the 150th jubilee celebrations the SCAFL league will be hosted by Williamstown FC. Chief executive Brendan Curry says the club is looking for sponsorship and accommodation for the South China team. “We’re looking for help and support for the Chinese national league. They’ll be hosted here in William-
stown, and we will be offering them support through coaching and expenses. It will be a pleasure to host them and let them experience all the great things Williamstown has to offer.” The SCAFL comprises six teams from Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau. In addition to providing a structured environment for the playing and promotion of Australian Rules in South China, the SCAFL is also actively involved in the development of player talent from the local Chinese communities. Williamstown’s sponsorship helps
fund the travel and associated football costs of specially-identified talented Chinese players involved in the SCAFL. As a direct result of this sponsorship, close to 100 Chinese athletes are now playing Aussies Rules in South China. The AFL International Cup 2014 will be staged in Victoria from 9 - 23 August. The China Red Demons first debuted in the AFL International Cup in 2008. A squad of 30 young men chosen
from various sports universities again participated in 2011. This year, the China Red Demons squad will primarily comprise young Chinese football talent playing in the SCAFL. Given the opportunity to regularly hone their skills in the SCAFL, this squad will be the strongest yet to leave China’s shores. Williamstown will be a proud host of the China Red Demons at this year’s Cup, and looks forward to supporting the Chinese players both on and off the field. 1122378-AM10-14

Williamstown’s supporter base is ethnically-diverse, which reflects the multicultural nature of Melbourne’s rapidly-expanding Western Suburbs. On field, senior coach Andrew Collins and his playing group are aiming to make 2014 a memorable one. As well as the anniversary milestone, Williamstown will be fielding a standalone VFL side this season. The move is set to increase the tribal like support the Seagulls receive in the community as well as
provide more opportunities for local footballers. After taking over the top job in the off-season, Collins said he had been rapt with the way his playing group had embraced the challenges ahead of a huge year for the club. “All our players are experiencing the great hype around that celebration,” Collins said. “Throughout the summer, we have had some of the legends of the Williamstown Football Club around them.
“Past greats like Gerry Callahan, Terry Wheeler and Ian Rickman, these great Williamstown names have been popping in and out. “It is amazing the amount of past players and past supporters who are getting back to the footy club. “That decision that the board made to go standalone has really pulled the whole Williamstown Football Club community back to Williamstown.” Collins is hoping to make it a double celebration for the William-
stown faithful with some on-field success to complement the club’s 150th year celebrations. “From a personal perspective, to come to Williamstown, it has been amazing,” Collins said. “It really is one of the great clubs in Australian football. “Hopefully, there is a really strong home ground advantage that we will have at Williamstown. As a coach, I would be really disappointed if we don’t win more games than we lose.”

Hit them hard By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO AN Altona resident is calling for harsher penalties on vandals after her home was targeted late last month. The incident, in which the resident’s home was “egged” on two separate occasions, came only days before youths went on a shocking crime spree across Newport and Altona. Residents and traders on Challis St awoke on Monday 31 March, to find their cars and shopfronts had been severely damaged. At least 18 cars and a number of shops were tagged with graffiti in the early hours of the morning while some cars had broken windows or had loose change stolen. Police estimate the damage bill to be more than $50,000. The tag “NBT” was sprayed on most of the vehicles with police checking the acronym against a graffiti database. Other cars had offensive images or words painted on them. Police said spray cans, tools and clothing found near the scene was being tested for DNA. The angry Al-
tona resident, who did not want to be named, spoke out after both incidents and said a greater police presence within the community might deter vandals from destroying people’s homes, cars and shops. “We need to increase penalties for vandalism. We need more police to be out there. Police on road to zero toll POLICE will saturate roads across Melbourne’s West over the next three months in a bid to reduce fatalities and injuries across the state. Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill last week launched the “Road to Zero - it starts with you” campaign and urged the community to take ownership of its role in reducing road trauma. It is hoped the campaign will unite the community to work together to achieve a long-term vision of zero deaths and zero serious injuries on Victorian roads. Road to Zero, which will include at least 11 road operations, comes in the wake of a horror start to the year. Already 70 people have died - four more than this time last year. But police are reminding motorists that there is another side to the tragedy - those who are left scarred and maimed by road trauma. In 2013, more than 5500 people were seriously injured following collisions. Mr Robert Hill said survivors are not often spoken of. “Road trauma is not just about the people who die - it’s about the enormous impact on the community,” he said. “Everyone is affected by road trauma - from the family left behind, to the emergency services workers who have to cut people out of a wreck.
“These people are not just anonymous names in the paper, they are not a statistic, they are our neighbours, our friends, they are all of us.” Mr Hill called on the community to stand together and pledge to stop the unnecessary carnage on the state’s roads. He said it is important for motorists to drive to the speed limit and conditions, stay off their mobile phones and show courtesy and respect for other road users. Police data over the past three months reveals that speed and careless or reckless driving are among the leading causes of road deaths. Transport Accident Commission CEO Janet Dore threw her support behind the campaign and urged the community to unite. Ms Dore said for every person killed on Victorian roads, a further 20 are left with serious injuries. “These are people’s brothers, mothers, sisters and sons and, for many of them, life will never be the same,” she said. “Serious injury is the hidden toll of road trauma and each year close to 6000 Victorians are affected. “Victoria Police and TAC invite the community to join with us, to take ownership of road safety and stand together as we work towards our mission of zero road deaths and zero serious injuries.”
One for skater boys (and girls) HOBSONS Bay City Council is calling on skater boys and girls from across the municipality to jump on their skateboards, BMXes and scooters and show off their skills next week. POLICE are warning residents to adequately secure their home after they were called out to almost 5000 residential burglaries across Melbourne’s West during the 2012-2013 financial year. Commander Doug Fryer said police were fed up with seeing these staggering statistics and called on the community to take steps to im-
prove home security and deter opportunistic burglars over the Easter holiday period. “Locking your windows and doors might seem like common sense steps, but our statistics show that not everyone is taking them,” Commander Fryer said. “It’s frustrating that police have to respond to these incidents, many of which could possibly have been prevented.”
Commander Fryer said some steps the community could take to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary include locking all windows and doors, even when you’re at home - unlocked side and rear doors are the most common entry points for burglars - installing deadlocks on all external doors and windows, cutting overhanging branches away from your house to make it harder for burglars to hide, let your
neighbours know if you’re going to be away for a few days and reporting any suspicious behaviour immediately to police via triple-zero. EVERY moment of every day Tracy Clery remembers her beautiful and dignified daughter Kelly. The Altona Meadows mother recalls Kelly’s laughter and smile and her bravery - even in her final moments. But despite Mrs Clery’s grief and that of her beloved family, the courageous mother is on a mission to raise awareness of the often unrecognisable signs and symptoms of bowel cancer. In early 2013 Kelly, 21, flew back to Australia to celebrate the birth of her first nephew and it was then that she began having trouble with regular bowel movement. She visited her local GP for what she thought would be a routine check-up and was told she would have to undergo a colonoscopy. On 9 May, Kelly and her parents received the devastating news that a cancerous tumour was detected during the procedure and she required a colonoscopy bag and six weeks of intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment. “The first time we heard she had cancer, we couldn’t believe it ... you can’t believe that your child has cancer,” Mrs Clery told Star. After the first round of treatment, scans revealed the tumour had shrunk. However, months later doctors informed them that the tumour had now metastasised and it would be too dangerous to operate. Kelly endured two more rounds of chemotherapy treatment in which she suffered a mild heart attack and blood clots in her lungs. She had dropped a staggering 30kg but remained her brave self and always thought of the wellbeing of her family and friends throughout the agonising experience. In December last year, doctors said there was a chemotherapy trial that might prolong her life but would have harmful side effects. It was then that Kelly decided she had had enough. “She looked at me and said, ‘Mum I’m sorry I can’t do it. It’s going to make me sicker and I am so tired I can’t keep fighting anymore’. Kelly thought about her family until the end ... she planned her own funeral and wrote us a letter. We had her at home at Christmas and we were with her every step of the way. She never lost her dignity.” And even when doctors gave Kelly the prognosis that she had two to four days to live, she told her family they had weeks to spend with her. Now the heartbroken mother and father, Jim, and loving sisters and brother are hoping to raise awareness of bowel cancer and that it isn’t “an older person’s disease”. “If you have trouble going to the toilet check it out. Young kids think it won’t happen to them, but it can ... we had no family history of bowel cancer. A WYNDHAM animal rescuer has slammed the actions of thugs who stole two dogs from a Werribee backyard and threw them out the window of a speeding car last week, killing them. Police were appealing for witnesses after the bodies of a staffey and a maltese shih tzu were discovered by a witness on Heaths Rd. A Victoria Police spokesperson said it was believed the dogs had been baited out of the yard and thrown from the car as it approached Purches St at around 12.15am on Wednesday. The dogs belonged to a family with three children. Kerry Gebert established Puppy Tales Rescue in April 2012 and she has since saved more than 400 dogs from being abused, neglected and abandoned. Ms Gebert told Star she was “disgusted” by the actions of the dog killers. “Words can’t even describe how I feel,” Ms Gebert said. “I’m completely gutted for the family that the dogs were stolen from. I couldn’t imagine anything worse. “For them to be just disposed of like they were rubbish or garbage is just disgusting.” Ms Gebert said she had seen horrific cases of dog abuse and neglect in Wyndham, the worst of which involved a chihuahua which required emergency surgery. However the dog, called Rosie, died shortly after surgery and Ms Gebert has since established a foundation in her name, Rosie’s Wish, to help raise money to pay for future urgent operations that will save dogs’ lives. The Victoria Police spokesperson said they were looking for a vehicle described as an early model white 4WD or van that is believed to have been involved in the murder of the two dogs. Safety at stake By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO WILLIAMSTOWN MP Wade Noonan has slammed the State Government after it closed the underpass at North Williamstown station last week. Mr Noonan said the decision by VicTrack to begin work to remove the underpass came “in the dead of night” and “smacked of stupidity”. Speaking to Star last week, Mr Noonan said while he had long been complaining about the dangers at the railway crossing, closing the underpass would only result in making it less safe for pedestrians. “This crossing is used by hundreds of school children every day who will now be placed in even greater danger without an underpass,” he said. “I am completely gob-
smacked by this decision and can’t believe the incompetence of the transport minister Terry Mulder on this issue. Has he even been to the crossing?” A spokesperson from Mr Mulder’s office said closing the underpass was necessary to begin vital work at the station. “This work will provide an at-grade level crossing suitable for all Victorians, including those with a disability, to allow them to safely and easily access North Williamstown railway station,” the spokesperson said. “There was no way to do this without removing the old underpass. The old underpass included steps and forced pedestrians who are unable to use stairs, such as the aged; people in wheelchairs; and families with prams to cross a busy road in Ferguson St to get to the at
grade pedestrian crossing on the other side of the road.” The spokesperson said there would be a few weeks of inconvenience for station users, who would need to cross the road to access the existing at-grade crossing, but the long-term benefits would be a safer and more convenient crossing. “The work is being partially completed during school holidays and the Easter break when fewer people will be using the crossing.” VicTrack spokeswoman Nicola Holland said the crossing was ranked as high-risk under the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model and work has been brought forward by six months in order to achieve the best outcome for pedestrians.

Courtney Frampton-Dahl is the first female apprentice to be placed with MIGAS in Melbourne and is one of two females working at Matthews Brothers Engineering in Newport. The Derrimut resident began her four-year boilermaker apprenticeship last month and has her sights clearly set on a bright future at the company despite views to the contrary. “A lot of people told me I couldn’t do it, because it was a male-dominated industry, so I thought I would prove them wrong,” Courtney told Star. “Most males are shocked to see a young girl like me in the industry, but it really doesn’t bother me. “I’ve got the thumbs up from my workmates.” The ambitious youngster hopes to one day complete a dual trade as a fitter and turner and electrician. Matthews Brothers Engineering account manager Penny Matthews said she took a shine to Courtney as soon as her application came in. “Before we employed Courtney, I was the only female in the factory. We got the call from MIGAS and I took the case to

Three of the best By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THREE students from Bayside College have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community. Nabila Wahtuningtyaf, Jake Wilkin and James Sayer received Inspirational Young Person in Hobsons Bay awards last week, and all agreed they felt very proud and humbled by the award. Nabila, 17, who received the award for her achievements in music, said she was honoured to be receiving an award for doing something she loved. The international student arrived in Australia almost three years ago and could not speak English, but has spent the last two-and-a-half years performing in front of audiences across the city. She recently performed at Federation Square on Australia Day and can boast playing the guitar and drums. “I’m very proud of the award, singing is just my hobby…I have been doing it since I was little,” Nabila told Star. Unlike other teenagers, Jake Wilkin has a very different hobby, which has now become a thriving career. The Year 11 student received the award for his work as a professional magician and admits it is something he has always wanted to do. “I was 11 years old when I saw a magician on TV and knew that was what I wanted to do,” he said. “It’s really good to receive an award and people recognising your work.” James Sayer received the

Art from the heart is real By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A SEAHOLME mother-of-two is turning her artistic dreams into reality and creating a unique style of art for her audience. After 40 years of drawing and portrait painting, Kerrie Gottliebsen began studying the photographic effect of bokeh last year and has not looked back. Kerrie said her paintings were like dreams and offered the viewer a feeling of transcending past and present. “There is something about
blurred and mottled light that is like a dream,� she said. “The style is absolutely hypnotic and created a real mind shift for me. “After painting pictures of children and dogs for a long time, I have become so passionate about this.� Kerrie said she often went out at dusk as the sun was going down to capture the amazing contrast between dark and light, and then interpreted the photographs she had taken with oils on canvas. Each painting takes about a month to create and is painstak-
ingly completed with a fine brush. But she says all the hard work and long hours in front of an easel are worth it. “I become totally lost in the moment, it’s really intoxicating. “I might be right in the middle of painting a dew drop on the end of the branch and anything could be happening around me. It’s a great form of medication.� Kerrie’s latest exhibition My Blurry Life is on at the Yacht Club Hotel in Williamstown as part of Hobsons Bay City Council’s Art in Public Places project.

Unique Easter traditions in Oz JUST like the rest of the world, Easter traditions in Australia are quite unique. Usually associated with new beginnings and the start of spring, an Australian Easter however is celebrated in March/April in early autumn
unlike other Northern hemisphere countries, where Easter falls in the springtime. Traditionally, the Easter celebrations begin with Shrove Tuesday and ends with Whitsun.
During celebrations, Australians observe a host of rituals like Pancake Day with pancake races, fill up on hot cross buns and hunt for Easter eggs. Unlike other places where the Easter Bunny is esteemed
highly, the Aussies deem the rodent-like symbol as a bad omen. A fictional rodent called ‘Easter bilby’ is the main Easter symbol. The reason why bunny rabbit was replaced by bilby is that, the bunny rabbit is reported to have destroyed the agricultural crops. The ‘Easter bilby’ takes away all the limelight in the celebrations. Easter celebrations encompass church prayers, Easter bilby and not to forget, the
brightly coloured Easter eggs. It is a time for family gatherings. To share the Easter meal with relatives is one of the important traditions. This meal generally consists of roasted lamb, beef or chicken along with roasted vegetables like potatoes, carrots and pumpkin. Many families play Easter hunt among themselves wherein the hunt is to take place inside homes or gardens and the kids
are put to the task of hunting for eggs. The game ends with rewarding the kid who finds the maximum number of eggs. In the reservoir of games, the hot favourite game is egg knocking. The last, but definitely not the least of the great traditions of Easter is the preparation of hot cross buns. These include dried fruit raised with yeast or a simple mixture of flour and water is what follows the ritual.

The Water Compliance Project is underway in Victoria helping rural water users understand their rights and obligations for taking and using water. The Water Compliance Project is Victoria’s implementation of the National Framework for Compliance and Enforcement of water resource management systems. The Framework promotes common water laws and compliance mechanisms across Australia and is funded by the Australian Government through the Water for the Future initiative. Most water users are responsible and abide by the conditions of their water licence. However, each year a small number of users break the law when they take and use rural water from an aquifer, dam, stream, river, creek or irrigation channel. They may take water without an entitlement or licence, they may build an illegal bore or dam, or they might interfere with a water meter. Sometimes these offences are deliberate, and sometimes they happen because people do not know the law. Water corporations already actively monitor and enforce water compliance in their jurisdictions. The project will provide more resources to extend their compliance monitoring and enforcement capabilities including: • additional monitoring oficers to check that water users are only using the water they are allocated; • more easy-to-understand information about licensing requirements and compliance obligations for existing and potential water users. Monitoring oficers may be more visible in all regions. Amongst other things they will conduct additional inspections of meters on unregulated systems throughout Victoria, identify unlawful take and uses of water and validate license details. There are six water corporations that provide non-urban water supplies to customers who are involved in this project and can advise water users about their rights and responsibilities: - Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water* - Goulburn-Murray Water - Southern Rural Water - Lower Murray Water* - Melbourne Water - Coliban Water* *only applies to rural customers If you are in one of these regions and take and use water from sources such as a dam, bore, stream, river, creek, or irrigation channel, you should: • check your water entitlement (license) to make sure you understand your compliance obligations; or • contact your water corporation if you are unclear about your obligations. Late blitz costs Gulls By LIAM TWOMEY A FINAL quarter blitz from the Northern Blues cost Williamstown the four points in its clash at Visy Park on Sunday. After taking a three-point lead into quarter time, the Seagulls took control of the match in the second quarter, kicking four goals to one and opening a 20-point gap at half time. The margin only increased after the break with a Scott Clouston mark and goal followed by a Nick Meese goal shortly after lifting the margin to 33 points. However, from there the match took an unexpected turn. After struggling to make an impact on the scoreboard for the first two and a half quarters, the Northern Blues suddenly clicked into gear. A flurry of late goals closed the gap to just 12 points at three quarter time with both teams right in the hunt. The momentum of the contest continued to change in the final term as the Blues kept pushing. Northern eventually fought its way to the front at the 18-minute mark courtesy of a Jack Anthony goal.
From there, the two teams traded a goal each as the Seagulls ran out of time to get the lead back, falling by four points. The 15.11 (101) to 14.13 (97) loss is Williamstown’s second of the season after the Seagulls also came up short against Box Hill a week earlier. Despite the loss, Anthony Anastasio showed why he is one of the most dangerous small forwards in the VFL, kicking four goals. Mitch Banner was the only other multiple goal scorer for Williamstown and finished with two majors. Around the ground, Ben Davies and Cameron Lockwood worked hard all afternoon to be the standouts for the Seagulls. For the Northern Blues, Thomas Temay and Anthony were a dangerous combination up forward and finished the match with seven goals between them. Williamstown will look to secure its first win of the VFL season when it hosts the Footscray Bulldogs this week. ALTONA recovered from a third quarter fade-out to beat Albion by eight points in the Western Region Football League on Saturday. The Vikings looked in control of the match throughout the first half and took a 19-point lead into quarter time and an 11-point lead into the main break. However, a five-goal-to-one third term to Albion turned the match on its head. With the Cats holding all the momentum at the final change, new Altona coach Josh Russo managed to get his team back on track. The Vikings shut the Cats’ offensive down in the final term, conceding just two behinds for the quarter. At the other end of the ground, Altona peppered the goals, kicking 3.5 for the term to take the come from behind win, 13.12 (90) to 12.10 (82). “I thought we started particularly well in the first quarter and then we sort of got away from what was working,” Russo said. “Credit to Albion, they got on top. The boys showed some good character and a big effort to lift in that last quarter and get over the line for the win. “I think in the last quarter the pressure around the ground
picked up. We got back to what was working in the first quarter that went missing. “Our defence held up really well which gave us a great chance to win the game.” Luke Ryan and Daniel O’Leary were outstanding for Altona, each kicking three goals and having an impact around the ground. They were well supported by Lee Spiteri, who continued his great start to the 2014 season. After being named best-onground in the WRFL’s interleague victory against the Southern Football League the week prior, Spiteri picked up where he left off with another impressive game. Altona will now look to make it back-to-back wins when the Vikings take on Spotswood this Saturday. “You’d be silly to ever go into a game against Spotty and think it is going to be easy,” Russo said. “We know it is going to be a good challenge and all you can do is go out, play to a game plan and hopefully you come up trumps. “Spotswood will be a good side again this year and we will definitely do our homework and try and do the best we can against a good side.”

shorts Football speaks all languages AFL Victoria has announced the introduction of a new VFL Multicultural Ambassador program for 2014. Following the successful model the AFL has run with various players over recent years, five Peter Jackson VFL players - David Mirra (Box Hill Hawks), Adam Marcon (Williamstown), Peter Faulks (Williamstown), Joel Wilkinson (Northern Blues) and Gatluak Johnson (Coburg) - will help assist AFL Victoria with multicultural development initiatives and programs that currently exist across participation, community, fans, engagement and talent. The role of the new ambassadors will vary, from providing participation opportunities for the community, to being involved in talent academies for multicultural and indigenous participants. AFL Victoria engagement manager Xavier Moloney said VFL clubs were asked to nominate players for the positions, with others selected from previous involvement in multicultural programs. “The major aim for the ambassadors is to help increase engagement and awareness of what AFL Victoria do in the community, and in particular the TAC Cup and VFL. “It also provides the players with professional development in our programs,” Moloney said. “The varied backgrounds of each player will help with interacting with the communities they will be involved in.” The number of multicultural players within Victoria’s State league competition is also something the new ambassador program is aiming to increase. “Last year 13 per cent of VFL lists were made up of players from a multicultural background (at least one parent born overseas).” Williamstown this year has introduced a multicultural advisor, Jiaming (Jamie) Pi, who will be working closely with the club in the lead up to its Multicultural Community Day on Sunday April 13, and when the club hosts the China national team at the International Cup in August this year. Werribee too has appointed a multicultural development officer in Majok ‘Shaggy’ Ngong. The club is also involved with running the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project, which encourages youth from ethnic or diverse cultural backgrounds to get involved in all sport. ST ALBANS coach Marcus Barclay has labelled Deer Park the best side he has seen in local football after the Lions topped the Saints by 65 points last week. In what is now the traditional opening to the Division One season, Deer Park took a 15-point lead into quarter time and continued to pull away. With the margin increased to 41 at the half time break, the Saints did their best to slow the juggernaut. St Albans won the third term by a point before the Lions regrouped for one last charge. Deer Park finished with four goals in the final term to seal the 15.13 (103) to 5.8 (38) win. “They were close to the best local football side that I have seen in many years,” Barclay said. “What they have got on the park, it is just better than what local footy has ever seen. Even the guys that played in the premiership last year who weren’t AFL/VFL, the local players, they have even sort of got better with better players around them. It is a bit scary.”

A fine time in Tiger territory GREAT to see two local football clubs create some history last weekend. The Tarneit Tigers made their debut as a senior and junior club in the WRFL and did so in style. Congratulations to Sue Thornton and her committee and all the volunteers who were part of an historic weekend. The seniors played North Sunshine and won handsomely and then on Sunday the juniors played. The WRFL senior debut of Werribee Districts was another highlight with the Tigers playing Hoppers Crossing. The rivalry between these two clubs has been confined to their junior ranks over the years but it finally involved the seniors last Saturday at Soldiers Reserve. Werribee took the points despite some inaccurate kicking for goal. It was a bold move by Werribee to leave the VAFA and join the WRFL but one I think will be good for the future of the club. They have been a very successful club at both senior and junior levels and not that both are in the same competition I can see a platform for even more success. niors joined the WRFL over a decade ago. The week they play their first home game for 2014 against Anakie, and will be unveiling their new digital scoreboard. They have recruited well this year and will be a real threat in the GDFL with the likes of Jason Butty, Ben Fletcher and the Montebruno brothers running around. The club though has turned over a lot of players (45) which is a concern for football in general. It is a constant battle for clubs to retain players for a number of reasons. Local sporting clubs are the backbone of the community and we need them to be healthy and viable. We have enough trouble on the streets as it is. ONE area of football that is a concern is the drop off in numbers at under-18 level. Some clubs are combining so they can field a team in this age group, which is not good. While it was a long time ago, I dropped out of sports at 17 due to work - as did a lot of my mates - and that is still the case for many but there appears to be a bigger decline in recent years. Sport is a big commitment when you add up training, match day, social functions and travel it does not leave a great amount of time for much else if you factor school, uni and work in as well. I don’t have the answer to this but I know it is a concern that is going to become a problem. It is almost as if we have the elite under-18 program and everyone outside that becomes a spectator rather than a participant. Your thoughts are welcome. ON a positive note, my son Hayden is back at Auskick and what a great experience that is for young boys and girls and their parents. While it might be tough for some to give up their Saturday morning the payoff is well worth it. I think the cost is very fair. The kids get a backpack with a footy and other things and they get 90 minutes of free training for 15 Saturdays for $72. I know some might struggle with that and I understand that, but I see it as an investment in my son’s future. The program is structured well and run very professionally with an emphasis on participation rather than being the next Brad Johnson or Cyril Rioli. I thank those volunteers at every centre, and Wyndham alone has 10, who give their time every week. The kids appreciate it and certainly the parents do.

WESTERN Jets coach Torin Baker was pleased to see an improved performance from his boys despite giving up a sevengoal lead in a loss to Oakleigh on Sunday. The Jets led at every change and looked to be in control at North Port Oval, but the fastfinishing Chargers stormed home with four of the five goals scored in the final quarter to snatch a seven-point win. Two late Oakleigh goals in time-on and some crucial Jets skill errors led to what proved the match-winning lead, handing the latter their third successive loss to start the TAC Cup season. However, Baker was upbeat after the game, telling Star his undermanned side showed plenty of good signs - particularly in the first half. “I was really pleased with our performance,” Baker said. “We’ve got a number of our best players out at the moment and to produce that sort of effort at the start was really commendable for the group. I thought we were really hungry, really desperate and I thought Oakleigh changed the way the game was being played. “They put some numbers behind the ball and we made some errors and allowed them to get back in the contest. FOR the second time this season, VU Western Lightning walked away from the Western Suburbs netball derby empty-handed after being beaten by City West Falcons on Wednesday night. However, the nine goal 48-39 Falcons’ win was a lot closer than it looked on paper. The Lightning took it up to their more highly-fancied opponents for three quarters, but paid the price for a second term fade-out. After taking a two-goal lead into the opening break, City West dominated the second quarter and blew the margin out to 10 goals. There was no coming back for the Lightning who continued to battle hard in the second half. City West coach Matt Hills said there was a mix of posi-
tives and frustration to come out of the match. “We turned the ball over or we gave them 18 balls in the first half,” Hills said. “A lot of that was from a combination of poor decision-making or more importantly, poor execution. That really hurt us. “In the second half we only turned the ball over in that vein nine times. “I think that shows there are some key areas to work on. They have now won eight straight and I think we are the first team to hold them to a single-digit margin. There are some positives to come out of that but we have still got some work to do.” The result continues City West’s dominance over the Victorian Netball League competition. The Falcons are yet to lose a
game and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 7-0 record. Meanwhile VU has now slipped outside the top four and holds a 4-3 win loss record. Teams will get to enjoy a week off before round eight of the season begins next week. The Lightning will take on Yarra Valley in what is shaping up to be a must-win clash. “It is a very tight competition between third and eighth so we can’t afford to be losing too many more games as we move forward,” Hills said. “It is extremely important now. We have got two weeks to work solidly on our line-ups. We can really get working. “We need to be at our best. They (Yarra Valley) beat us a couple of weeks ago and we need to turn that result around. It is really a must-win game.”

ALTONA and Footscray split their season-opening Premier League Hockey double-header at the Altona Hockey Ground on Saturday. In the women’s game it was Footscray who landed the first blow of the season, coming away with a 2-1 win despite conceding the opening goal of the game to the Seagulls. In the men’s game, however, Altona’s Patrick Phillips was the lone scorer in the Seagulls’ 1-0 win over the Bulldogs. Altona coach Ben Guy was impressed with the poise his men had shown during the tense local derby. “It was really positive for the boys,” Guy said. “They’ve started out very well and didn’t lose patience. We went into half-time 0-0 after having 22 circle entries and in the second half they continued on very positively and moved the ball really well from back to front, particularly through the midfield.” Guy said his side could have added to its goal tally, and is hoping his forwards can make more use of their scoring opportunities in coming weeks. “We need to continue work-

“Each team could have scored first and Altona got the job done there and managed to hold on for the rest of the game. They probably had the better of the play and the opportunities but for us we certainly took it up to them. “We had five guys out with the under-18 state team which certainly pushes the depth in your club but that’s not an excuse for where we’re at. However we did miss some quality with the guys that weren’t there up front just to help us get some pay-off inside the circle.”

Hawks tame Tigers By LIAM TWOMEY WERRIBEE fell 25 points short against reigning Victorian Football League premier Box Hill on Saturday. Played at Box Hill City Oval, it was the Hawks that made the fast start to the match, kicking 5.3 in the opening quarter to take a 22-point lead into the first break. From there Werribee was able to find its feet and began to slow Box Hill’s charge. The two teams kicked five goals each across the next two quarters, with inaccuracy the only thing stopping Werribee from eating into the margin. Despite finishing the match with an equal number of scoring shots, Werribee was unable to recover from the slow start to eventually fall 12.11 (83) to 7.16 (58). “We had a fair bit of control early in the game and then we let them through for a couple of soft ones,” Werribee coach John Lamont said on the first quarter. “We kicked 1.5 in the first quarter but I think there were three out on the full as well and two other shots that should have made it but didn’t. “You look at the scores and it looks like they jumped us but it wasn’t really like that. “From there we missed a few simple targets, dropped a few chest marks and we were just sort of nipping at their heals the whole day but couldn’t capitalise and make
