■ NewsWeekly joins the convoy of courage...
Truckin’ hope By KRYSTEN MANUEL IT WAS 5.30am when we left Walbundrie. The sky was black, the air was cold and the truck was loaded with hay for farmers who would later greet us with wet eyes, warm smiles and a sturdy handshake. The Burrum to Bourke Hay Run would soon join another 36 trucks and convoy through to Cobar where we would meet up with the Hay From WA team, a convoy of 16 road trains that travelled across three states, led by two women. It was an atmosphere that could only be described as magical from the very start. In no time the CB radio was alive with the excitement of the truckies and their passengers, and maybe a dirty joke or two. After lunch in Mount Hope everyone knew everyone and the anticipation of delivering the 2500 bales of hay to nearly 200 desperate farmers was buzzing in the air. Each town we passed through demonstrated their appreciation to all involved - cars stopped and people got out to wave and yell ‘Thankyou!’ as we meandered past, and children pumped their arms and squealed with glee as the truckies honked their horns. “It was about 70 kilometres out and there was a station owner standing out the front with a sign that said ‘Thankyou,’ and I cried just about the whole way into town,” WA truckie Ross Stone said. The reception when arriving in Bourke was more than anyone expected, and for the first time in nine hours the radio fell silent. The 7.5km convoy travelled
through Bourke and parked at the Cotton Gin off Mitchell Highway. Bourke immediately showed its appreciation in the form of cold beer and a hearty barbecue. Bourke’s mayor Andrew Lewis took the time to thank the convoy, reminding them that although they recently had enough rain to sprout a little greenery, it was short-lived incomplete respite from a drought that left cracks in the ground you could fit half your arm in. “We’re very grateful, it’s a big morale boost,” he said. “A bit of hay doesn’t go far but it’s that people are thinking about you.” The next morning 10 trucks put their hands up to continue on more than 300 kilometres to Lightning Ridge, where you could see every bone in each cow walking along the side of the road. We pulled up in a paddock in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere - the ground was unsteady from so many years of scorching heat and the sky teased us with dark rolling clouds that spat fat droplets for a second and continued on their way. But the people of Lightning Ridge were full of eye-crinkling smiles and kind words. A local farmer, Robert Turnbull, who had liaised with the brains and brawn behind the Burrum to Bourke Hay Run - Brendan Farrell, walked straight up to my driver Sam McClelland to personally introduce himself and extend a grateful hand. He later pulled everyone aside to make a speech that had even the toughest truckies smiling with bitter-sweet pride. Continued Page 6

She’s our whale warrior By KRYSTEN MANUEL
THE International Court of Justice’s recent order to temporarily halt Japan’s annual slaughter of whales is a particularly glorious victory for one local woman, Wyanda Lublink. Ms Lublink has been working with Sea Shepherd as First Officer of the Sam Simon to protect whales in the Southern Ocean since last year. “We had three ships down there (in the Ross Sea) and we were looking for the whaling fleet,” she said. “Our main job was to disrupt them or if they managed to kill a whale we were to prevent them from transferring the whale from the whaling vessel to the slaughterhouse. “We were always sent down south to make the Japanese fleets run to the north and the Steve Irwin and the Bob Barker would take over. “I was first officer on the Sam Simon, so I had my responsibility there, but my main job was watchkeeping - it was four hours on the bridge and eight hours off to help navigate the ship and make sure we didn’t run into icebergs or other ships, and look for the whaling fleet. “We were the first ones to encounter the Japanese whaling fleet
on the 5th of January and there was no confrontation there - when they saw us they ran and didn’t stop running for a week. Which is awesome because it means all the time they’re running they can’t whale.” The decision to ban Japanese whaling fleets marks a dramatic victory for the Australian Government, whose four-year campaign to ban the hunts relied entirely on convincing the court that Japan was claiming their activities as scientific research as a cover for commercial whaling. “This is a big decision Sea Shepherd and everyone has been waiting on for years,” Ms Lublink said. “We’ve been saying they’re just killing whales for commercial reasons and they’ve always said it was for science. “We had a helicopter there. They harpoon a whale, the whale dies - it takes 20 minutes for the whale to die and bleed out - and then it’s taken to the slaughterhouse. To do science you need to do scientific stuff - you need to measure the whale and take samples but all they would do is cut it up in pieces and bring it down below.” But there’s still work to be done and Sea Shepherd will continue to
take precautionary measures to see the Japanese whalers adhere to the UN’s ruling. “The problem has always been that although the Japanese government said they were doing this for scientific reasons, there was no-one down there to judge what they were doing - there was no navy, no coast guard, no nothing,” Ms Lublink said. “Sea Shepherd was the only one down there to actually look at what they’re doing. “We are still going to be ready to go in December and I’m going too, just in case Japan says ‘stuff it, we’re going to go anyway.’ You never know. “And if they don’t go there’s so many places in the world Sea Shepherd can help.” No doubt Ms Lublink will be helping animals wherever she goes, having spent a lot of time at Kangaloola Wildlife Sancturary in Yackandandah throughout the brutal attacks on wildlife last summer. “As long as I can be saving animals,” she said. “I’d like to protect any kind of animal, it doesn’t matter if it’s a kangaroo or a whale.”

Freeway clean-up call By KRYSTEN MANUEL
tacted RMS they replied with the following statement: “Roads and Maritime is aware of representations from Albury City Council about the maintenance of the Hume Freeway through Albury and is reviewing the frequency of litter collection and mowing on the freeway.” Cr Mack said it was the contractors’ responsibility to maintain the freeway entry on the basis of the existing status quo, and that he sometimes doubted the quality of workmanship was up to scratch, “given that they mow grass and rubbish without any consideration to the impacts of the further mess they create.” “Albury copped a ‘B’ grade construction job without appropriate barriers or landscaping, which could also contribute to maintenance follow-up.” Another option to resolve the matter has been explored by Ballarat, though Cr Mack has discounted the idea. “I’ve spoken to my counterparts in Victoria and they have a similar view - they have the same problem with the RTA but it’s not as obvious, however, if you speak to anyone from Ballarat or Bendigo, the reason why their entry looks so good is because they’ve taken over the contract and are contributing ratepayers’ money to maintaining it as an add-on,” he said. “Well if that’s the expectation of the RMS, that’s not going to happen. I don’t think the ratepayers should have to bear

ions into the ring. “We’re in constant negotiations with them but nothing seems to change,” he said. “I think it’s time we took a position on it, because if we ac-
cept it, that’s what we get. “Clearly it’s a State Government responsibility. Clearly we need as a community to make a statement about it. We pay taxes in the state of NSW, we need to
put pressure on the State Government to do something about it. “So people - open your eyes, have a look next time you’re on the freeway and I’d like to hear your opinion of what you see.”

“IT’S an arterial link to our city, but it’s also the gateway to our city,” Albury mayor Kevin Mack said. “Would you leave the gateway to your house in the same state? I don’t think so.” AlburyCity is currently in discussions with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to clean up the stretch of freeway coming into and out of Albury, something Cr Mack in particular is keen to get back up to scratch. “I think we’re expected to put up with the mess and everyone else’s litter from every other part of NSW and Victoria,” he said. “Our understanding is the current contractors that are responsible for the mess are of the view that maintenance requirements on that particular length of freeway are the same as what you would see at Woomargama or Holbrook - I disagree. “It needs to be maintained more regularly. There’s an expectation of the community that our parks and gardens look great, well I think it’s up to the contractor to keep their end of the bargain and look after what they have the responsibility to look after.” Freeway maintenance is contracted to Lend Lease by RMS. The RMS let the contract as a limited maintenance contract, which is within the RMS’s power to change in order to reflect the area impacted by this issue. When NewsWeekly con-

Road trains of hope
Convoy brings courage By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE reception Brendan Farrell and his convoy of 52 trucks received from the farmers of Bourke and Lightning Ridge was phenomenal. I had never heard so many ‘thankyous’ in my life. It was written on banners, yelled from the street and demonstrated by the overwhelming hospitality and warmth we received. But the trip to Lightning Ridge was special. Just 10 trucks and road trains volunteered to carry on the extra 300 kilometres past Bourke. As we rolled up the massive dirt paddock, the farmers were already assembling. The first person to shake my hand was none other than Robert Turnbull, who not only organised the receiving end of the Lightning Ridge hay run, but organised a $5000 contribution to fuel, with much of it coming out of his own pocket. After lunch he called everyone into a circle and in a deep, stern voice, read a handwritten speech that pricked our eyes and humbled our hearts. “I’d like to welcome you all here today to put a smile on your faces in an area where there’s not much to smile about, to be part of the biggest standalone hay drive in the Walgett Shire,” he said. “Making this all possible, I’d like to thank Brendan Farrell and all his truckie mates, bonding together with everyday people who have donated hay and their valuable time to help their fellow Australians in their time of need. “We’ve been suffering the effects of the worst drought in living memory
for the last two years, with the least recorded rain since 1886 when records were first kept. “We all know how hard it is with our ever-rising debt, workloads and the sheer emotional pressure of watching our little empires crumble around us. “What helps us keep going is knowing someone else cares for us - people we’ve never met bonding together in a show of mateship, willing to help the most important people in their lives, the Australian farmers. “People who appreciate the contribution people make to this country - today I’d like to introduce to you the following boys who have worked extremely hard to bring the hay to you the truckies. The personal contribution they have made is enormous. The loading and driving of the many hundreds of kilometres and the cost of keeping their trucks on the road, putting their normal income to one side to make it possible for the hay to be carted from many areas across Australia today. “On behalf of everyone here, we feel very humble and extremely grateful for your massive donation. “To all involved, if animals could only speak, there is only one thing they would say - thankyou to those involved for a wonderful feed of hay’.” The need for more government assistance in Bourke and especially Lightning Ridge is great. Bourke executive officer and rural financial counsellor Sharon Knight said some farms had had 3mm of rain for the year and many farms, if they did receive a little rain, only received it in pockets - people who had had rain in one paddock might not have had rain in the other,
Ten road trains and trucks approaching the Lightning Ridge unloading area. which is significant considering property sizes in Bourke could be 20,000 to 200,000 acres. And in Lightning Ridge, the desperation has some farmers staring down the barrel of a shotgun. “It’s a very productive shire, the Walgett Shire,” Robert said. “In 2012 it was the third biggest grain receival in NSW behind Moree and Griffith, something like $375 to $425 million worth of grain received at Walgatt Silo. “And here we are now on our knees, asking the government for a bit of assistance and we don’t really want to go into rural assistance loans because we’ve already borrowed enough money. What we need is a top-up from the government into interest rate subsidies.”
Robert Turnbull addresses the Lightning Ridge gang. “We wanted to spend a little more time with you. The invitation was open to stay in our homes and see what life is like here. “Everybody is very, very grateful for what’s been done, and it’s certainly going to be something they talk about for a long, long time.”
But while they watch and wait, the little bit of respite from fellow farmers last weekend was bitter-sweet, as we had to leave all too soon. “After you guys left there were people sitting around with tears in their eyes, overwhelmed by the fact that someone had thought of them,” Robert said.

Women step up to help out
Ross and Amelia Stone - ‘the spirit of the bush.’
By KRYSTEN MANUEL THEY say behind every great man is a great woman, but in the hay run to Bourke and Lightning Ridge the ladies present were far from the shadows of the men. With the girls taking up everything from truck driving to convoy organising, media to meat turning, it’s no surprise that two of the most prominent leaders on the trip were women. Sam Starcevich and Anne Bell organised 16 road trains to travel from Western Australia to Bourke, with some carrying on another 300 kilometres to Lightning Ridge. “For us it started off as donating hay for a friend,” Sam said. “I rang up to donate, put it on Facebook, Anne had the same idea, it was picked up by a local TV station at home and then Anne contacted me and we decided to work together. We ended up forming Farmers Across Borders. “Courtney ‘Chumpy’ Bonnett put his hand up to organise the trucks, we asked people to donate on Facebook and radio and people kept calling. “We could have filled another 20 road trains, we had so much hay we were turning people away, we just didn’t have the funding for it.” Sam said the reception when rolling into Bourke was more than worth the painstaking organising and 3500 kilometre trip. With groups of school children holding ‘thankyou’ banners larger than themselves, older men and women cheering from the sidewalk and young families smiling and waving, the UHF fell silent as one trucker said what they were all thinking - ‘it brings a tear to your eye, doesn’t it?’ “It’s been just fantastic,” Sam said. “It was awesome coming into town. I don’t think it’s really sunk in just yet.” Another lady doing her bit was Sydney dweller Carmen Vella, who travelled down to Burrumbuttock with her husband Charlie for the run. “We actually saw it in one of the driver’s magazines and we rang up Brendan and said we’d like to help him out on his hay run,” she said.
Spirit rides in from the West Above: Sam Starcevich and Anne Bell - the brains behind Hay From WA. Right: Charlie and Carmen Vella from Sydney. “It was only about a week ago, so it’s been a mad rush.” Carmen shared the driving with her hubby, having had her truck licence for over 20 years, and marvelled at the atmosphere surrounding the trip. “We didn’t know people but when we turned up we got to know everyone,” she said. “It’s a beautiful atmosphere - all the guys are friendly, everyone gets on, everyone’s helping each other, it’s marvellous. “People you didn’t know, you now know, and they’re taking you into their homes. “It’s such a worthy cause and if you’ve seen any of the farmers out there, it’s been pretty sad watching it. Being pro-active is a bit better than just watching it on telly for a change!”
THEY arrived on a road train from Western Australia with “spirit of the bush” written prominently on the bug deflector. It was a phrase used many times in the trip to Bourke by organisers, truckies, farmers, media and townfolk, but the father and daughter team who had put the phrase up especially for the trip embodied it completely. “We were farming in WA and we suffered two frosts and a drought,” Ross Stone said. “The bank forced us off the land so we had to leave and sell up. It was in our family for 101 years, I was the fourth generation, so it was pretty tough ... it was devastating. “We saw this on the Sunday Night program. I was sitting on the lounge and cried for about half an hour after I watched it and thought ‘I’ve gotta be part
of that.’ So I put my hand up and about two days later Amelia said ‘I want to be part of it too’.” Ross’s daughter Amelia was the talk of the town last Friday night once the convoy arrived in Bourke and settled down to a barbecue and beers - the little girl from WA who organised 200 showbags for the bush kids. “Dad saw the Hay From WA thing on Facebook and he wanted to get involved,” she said. “I needed to find a good reason to come, so I sat down with a book and decided that this was what I wanted to do, and here I am. “When we heard about the drought in Bourke I thought about the kids and how they might feel - I wanted them to know I was thinking about them as well. “We’ve made up 200 showbags and inside them there’s
lollies, bouncy balls, chips, water pistols, books, just cool stuff they can enjoy, and Sportspower in Esperance gave us about $2000 worth of stuff for about $900. Most of it was donated or at cost price.” It was an emotional trip for the father and daughter, who empathised with the struggling farmers of Bourke and Lightning Ridge like only those who had already been through the desperation a drought brings could. “It was about 70 kilometres out and there was a station owner standing out the front with a sign that said ‘Thankyou,’ and I cried just about the whole way into town,” Ross said. “After losing everything, you want to do what you can to help other people so they don’t have to go through it. It tears you up.”

From front page BEFORE we left Lightning Ridge, I was hoisted onto a telehandler and lifted a good seven metres in the air above some 40 truckies and farmers surrounding a hay bale truckie Simon McFarlane had sprayed with “spirit of the bush, where big hearts live,” and a lump travelled from my chest to my throat. For me, it was a moment that pulled together the guts of the operation. From the farmer from Burrumbuttock who wanted to “stop talking about it and do something,” to Sam Starcevich and Anne Bell who dragged 16 road trains across the Nullarbor, to the dry, witty mayor of Bourke, to Rob Turnbull and his heart-melting words, to the truckies who “gave a damn.” It was the trip of a lifetime that embodied what it means to be an Aussie - to battle hard, but always feel the strong hand of mateship on your shoulder.

Rotary digs deep By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE final cheque for $20,000 has been presented to the Hilltop Cancer Accommodation Centre. The cheque was part of a total pledge by the Rotary Club of Albury North for $125,000, but part of a larger scheme by 28 Rotary Clubs across the district to contribute more than $425,000 in just two years. The cheque was presented on Monday to Fight Cancer Foundation managing director Eric Wright by club president David Thurling. “Our fund-raising was through a car raffle across the district, we had money pledged from businesses and personal donations and we also use money from the Rotary market on Sunday that our club shares with Belvoir Wodonga - that’s one of our major fund-raisers,” he said. Mr Thurling said while the centre was well placed in Albury, it will primarily service the greater region. “To be honest, it’s probably not going to help a lot of people that live in Albury Wodonga because they won’t need accommodation, it’s more for the greater district,” he said. “There’s 400,000 people that live within the district, within an hour-and-a-half drive - from Wangaratta, up towards Wagga, Holbrook ... those people, their only other option is to come here to Albury or have to go to Melbourne and stay in hotels.” The last cheque will support a $75,000 indoor/outdoor playground for children who stay

The new area is hoped to alleviate some stress for parents when having to provide strict and constant supervision of their children and will enable whole families to cope better with the trauma and challenge of illness and ongoing treatments. “The trauma of a family member’s illness often causes whole families’ lives to be disrupted,” Mr Wright said. “Families are able to stay at Hilltop, close to treatment centres for ongoing medical treatment, in affordable and comfortable accommodation, relieving them of undue financial stress and the stress of constant travel.” In the 12 months since open-

RESPECT, pride and hard work has led the Chiltern Fire Brigade to re-write history at the CFA State Championships in Geelong last weekend. With two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals on the shelf, the team also picked up the B Division Aggregate Winning Team Station trophy - but the best was yet to come. “We’ve created brigade history with discipline awards given to both the seniors and the juniors,” Chiltern Fire Brigade Team manager and junior development co-ordinator Kurt Hickling said. “It’s also been about 20 years since it’s happened at the state championships where both discipline awards are given

to the same brigade at the one championship. “It’s a very difficult award to get because it’s basically the way you present and perform on the track, but it’s also about how you represent your brigade and the way your conduct yourself.” Mr Hickling said he couldn’t be more proud of his team of 24, who range from 11 up and trained twice a week since January for the event. “It really goes to show that we’re doing something right and I couldn’t be more proud of the whole Chiltern team,” he said. “We’re representing the CFA and the Chiltern Fire Brigade and we want to do things with pride and set that good example.
“In the junior development program we really emphasise respect and teamwork and the way they conduct themselves outside of the running competitions. “It’s not always about winning, it’s about the way you do things and the way you conduct yourself.” The Chiltern Fire Brigade and Baranduda are the only brigades around the area to have junior development programs, something Mr Hickling is keen to change. “We try to encourage other brigades on the Border to start up a junior development program or running team,” he said. “Not only do they learn a lot of everyday life values, but they become an asset to the brigade.”

Social Seen Skies clear for fishy run By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE weather cleared and the third Fishy Trail Run and half-marathon was held at the Kiewa River, Killara on Sunday with about 220 eager competitors. With three separate runs - the half-marathon, 11.5km and 6km, there was something for everyone. “It’s a really good opportunity to meet a lot of people, a great atmosphere, Parklands ranger Stewart Robil said. “The running community is a really good part of the community; they know how to have a bit of fun. “We had around 220 people all-up. It’s a little bit down on previous years - the colour run was also on and we had some weather coming in the days before, but the course dried up beautifully and it was a beautiful day on Sunday. The event is run as a fund-raiser for Parklands Albury Wodonga and Border Trust, with profits split 50/50. Riverside Estate were the major sponsor of the event, with Wodonga Council chipping in as well to keep entry fees down. “That money helps us run day to day, Mr Robil said. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation and part of it is we get money from the government via grant applications to do work, and part of it is raising our own money. “So it’s important we run these events and the community pays a reasonable price - it’s only $10 online or $20 on the day to run and it all goes into our budget and helps us continue through the year. “It’s also awareness raising about what Parklands does. We manage a lot of bush in the region, so part of it is getting people out, showing people we exist, what we do and why we’re doing it, and showcasing some of the environmental work we do. “Right along the river we ran on was a lot of projects we ran in the past, so we put signs up saying what we’ve done, how many trees were planted and who donated funding.

Catherine Hiscock of Upper Murray Family Care.
1127815-KC15-14
Catherine can count costs By KRYSTEN MANUEL
1128306-CB14-14
CATHERINE Hiscock is one of those lucky people who truly loves her job. Working for StepUP, Ms Hiscock offers a ‘fair go’ to low income families on the Border - people who are financially disadvantaged and unable to access fair and reasonable credit. “My very favourite story is of my first client,” she said. “This client presented with most of the required paperwork, but he had mental health issues as well - everything made him anxious. “He came to me for a television, so first we had to go shopping for the TV and that in itself was a real experience. Because of the mental health issues, an acquired brain injury with this person, he was very intelligent but came across as rather nasty and abrupt, so salespeople were very rude and weren’t listening to him. “We were in the last shop and every salesperson kept putting us onto the next. So we got to the last person and I touched him gently on the shoulder and said ‘This is a very special client and we just need to look after this client in a special way.’ “Anyway, the client ended up with a TV, we went to the bank, got the cheque and got everything arranged. “The client paid the loan back without question, but what impressed me was as soon as he’s paid it off he thought ‘I can do that, I think I’ll go again!’ And this time he went for a fridge.
“So we went to the same place we got the TV from. The client wanted a specific fridge and low and behold, there was only one of that type of fridge left and it was marked down $400 more than what it was marked down in the brochure. So I said, while you’re here, let’s see if you need anything else, and he got a toaster. “Because it worked out so quickly we had time to go and get a coffee and this is where the human side came out. He sat up so straight and felt as though he was the most important person in the world at that moment because someone took some time out to treat him like a human being - how special is that? “The client had done so well with his first loan and so was able to go onto another program I run called the Adds Up program. Good Shepherd is trying to teach people how to save and manage their money like our parents used to, so Adds Up is where they move their loan repayment across to a savings account. Once they save $500 the bank computer matches them $500 as a once-off and they can spend or keep saving the money. “This client has done that as well. “After it all he said to me ‘I never thought this was possible.’ The person has gone from a place of not fitting into the community and feeling like noone wanted anything to do with them, to fitting in and feeling like they’re part of it.” StepUP is designed specifi-
cally for people living on low incomes and enables people to purchase necessary household goods and services. The loans have a low interest rate, are for amounts between $800 and $3000 and are available for terms of up to three years. Alternative forms of credit are typically available at significantly higher rates. StepUP is a community initiative between National Australia Bank and Good Shepherd Microfinance which aims to provide a safe credit alternative. The loans are supplied on a notfor-profit basis and are part of National Australia Bank’s commitment to ensuring that all Australians have access to fair banking services. StepUP loans are currently offered in more than 35 locations across Australia. In Albury Wodonga the StepUP program can be accessed through Upper Murray Family Care. They provide a microfinance worker, like Ms Hiscock, to support and mentor people through the application process. To be eligible, applicants must hold a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pension Card and also have lived at their current address for more than three months. Documents are required to confirm income, expenditure and identification. People from Albury/ Wodonga who are interested in applying for a StepUP loan can contact the local StepUP microfinance worker at Upper Murray Family Care, 29 Stanley Street, Wodonga, 02 6055 8000.

British India brings afterglow By KRYSTEN MANUEL THE last time Border fans caught up with British India was at A Day on The Green earlier this year. Despite their visit being marked by sweltering heat, both bands and fans pushed on in the name of quality Aussie music. Now as British India head back our way, they bring with them all the afterglow and heightened musical wisdom of performing alongside Aussie rock legends like Hunters and Collectors (H&C). “It was really surreal to play with those guys (H&C) and You Am I and Something For Kate,” British India drummer Matt O’Gorman said. “The first day we got there it hadn’t actually hit how big these gigs were. We played the first gig in Geelong and it was on the stage they built for Fleetwood Mac, which was the biggest stage anyone had ever seen pretty much. “That’s when it all sunk in - ‘Look at the size of the stage, Mark Seymour’s walking around, yep - there’s Paul Dempsey and there’s Tim Rogers, this is going to be a bit of fun.’ “Playing those festivals really helps everything - it helps the playing, we road-tested a couple of songs we were playing there ... We’re actually going to miss A Day On The Green, it was the best festival.” On top of playing with H&C, British India also contributed to ‘Crucible’ (the H&C tribute album) with their popular take on the hit song ‘Do You See What I See’.
Box office
Alongside this, British India’s latest album Controller with its lead single I Can Make You Love Me was released in March 2013. The band’s fourth album is loaded with potent drumbeats, exhilarating guitar work and clever lyricism, and has been labelled more than once as evidence of the band “growing up.” “I think that’s true,” O’Gorman said. “The last couple of albums we recorded before that one were kind of done in blocks, but this one was recorded over about three
years. The first songs we wrote were three years ago and the last song to go on - Summer Forgive Me - was literally written a couple of weeks before we finished recording, so it’s really diverse. “We also got signed to a label and changed spaces where we recorded and rehearsed, there were just a lot of things that happened we kinda grew from.” But despite all the growing up they’ve done, British India are looking forward to a feisty crowd when they arrive in Albury later
this month. “We’re looking forward to Albury, we’ve had some of the funnest gigs we’ve ever played there,” O’Gorman said. “Albury gigs are pretty rowdy and insane, so we’re looking forward to coming back and doing it all again.” British India are playing live and free at the Albury SS&A Club, Sunday 20 April from 9pm. Inquiries: 02 6041 2222.

One for the brickheads THE LEGO MOVIE (PG) STARRING: Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks "AND that’s why they don’t make movies in Australia." It was a particularly cutting line from my 12-year-old son, and yet this former brickhead could only agree. As a youngster who probably spent more time in the bricky world of Lego than most other brickheads going around, I found myself unable to warm to this one. The effects are doubtless special, and well thought-
out, but I found the effort just didn’t compare to the giants at Pixar. The plot focuses on Emmett, a stock-standard Lego construction worker who finds himself in possession of the "Piece of Resistance", the magical Lego brick which can foil the dark forces which seek to stymie creativity by rigidly following the plans. Not much of a philosophy for life, really, but there you have it. The on-screen action is frantic, relentless and almost frenetic - but still, I didn’t feel the magic.
Blocks have been used for everything - including water, fire, smoke and the like. Maybe we’re just all bewitched by Pixar and their cunning scripts and cheeky cross-cultural references. Or maybe, like a muchloved book, Lego is better in your head than on the big screen. My concerns notwithstanding, the film is rating its plastic socks off, with the box office going through the roof.

VIRTUAL STOCK CLEARANCE OFFERS EXPIRE APRIL 30TH 2014 COVERS ALL MODELS FROM THE FOLLOWING BRANDS.
Suitable speakers WHAT makes a good speaker system? With over 400 speaker labels in the market, confusion is generally the first issue that confronts the client. Here are a few tips that will help you finally end up with the speaker that best suits your needs. Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, the correct choice to your room are critical to the success. A five star speaker in a large family room that was designed for close quarters listening may not sound as good as a three star speaker designed for a large room. Price is not always a guarantee to a better performance. Every amplifier brand has its own unique tonal sound; it is best to try and match the tonal sound of the amplifier with the speaker. When this is done right, the system may sound many levels above the mainstream mass produced items even though the price differential could be minimal if at all. Build quality in speakers is paramount; while the lack of weight can be a give-away sign, other factors should be considered such as the grade of speaker components and crossover network. Quality speaker companies will provide the speaker correct specifications particularly power handling in true RMS watts not just peak power.

testing is still done from countries of origin, with most manufacturing now done in Asia. The upside to this is the standard of speakers you purchase today usually mirrors the speakers that are being reviewed in the magazines. In the past, our frustrations were often met with inconsistent standards from the traditional hand-built methods. The other result has usually left you better off in the wallet as a bonus. Selecting a quality speaker may appear complicated; it is not as difficult as it might appear. The cream usually comes to the top and in most categories the choice comes down to a relatively small number of models. Take your time in selecting a speaker that best matches your amplifier, your musical tastes and your own room. Music is a personal choice made by you, do it right and the chances are you have just made an investment for a very long period of time.
Without this specification, the speaker usually has something to hide and you as an owner do not have the knowledge of what power these speakers can handle continuously. Use demonstration music that you are familiar with, bring your own quality music, however the word of advice is to bring it in as a CD, Vinyl or a lossless USB copy. If you bring the recording in mp3(itunes) format it may not allow the better quality speakers to shine. The demonstration should always be independently wired, using a switching box may save some time in the demonstration process, and often the speaker selected in this instance is the one that sounds the loudest and not necessarily the best. This set up has allowed the sales of many average quality speakers over the better performing product. Where the speaker hails from has less impact today than in the past, the design work and

It’s all about sustainability SUSTAINABLE is the new buzzword. Everything from the local cafe to the biggest buildings have sustainability as a goal. But for many regional Victorians what is now seen as sustainable, environmentally friendly living - rainwater tanks, growing fruit and vegetables, composting, collecting and chopping firewood, for example - have been part of life for generations. Since the rules governing new buildings, including additions and renovations, were introduced in Victoria almost three years ago some of these features of country life have become much more “mainstream”. They’ve also become a part of the building requirements. The six-star energy efficiency rating, which aligned Victoria with the Building Code of Australia, requires all new homes to either have a solar hot water system or a rainwater tank for toilet flushing. The rules also focus attention on insulation, the thermal performance, size and location of windows and building orientation. The days when country homes all faced the main road and city homes had a path from the street-facing front door have given way to north-facing living areas to capture winter sun and shade out summer sun. And that shady grapevine over a pergola becomes part of an energy efficiency plan. Environmentally friendly design was seen as the province of the well-off and of no great interest to buyers. But
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
times change and agents report buyers increasingly ask about a home’s sustainability credentials. For example, with more than one million Australian homes now with rooftop solar panels, most people are aware of their potential energy and cost-saving benefits. There have been thousands of new homes which comply with the new sixstar rating built in regional Victoria in recent years. In Swan Hill one of Australia’s only nine-star energy rated homes was built as a demonstration centre, part of the Tower Hill housing development. But throughout regional Victoria there are many older homes. Agents report that while buyers may be charmed, they also ask about other features such as double glazing and solar hot water that reflect the home’s overall sustainability. Not so many years ago agents would not bother promoting sustainability features. Now, though, these are seen as attracting buyers who want to reduce their footprint and their bills. Features such as solar panels, rainwater tanks and energy-efficient design are taking their place in marketing campaigns. So while investing in such features can also repay that investment through reduced costs, increasingly they add to a home’s capital value. Year-round comfort on offer By KRYSTEN MANUEL
SITUATED on a sizable 1041 square metre allotment, 2 Armstrong Terrace has been cleverly planned to accommodate the family through all seasons, with particular attention to winter. With its north-facing aspect, this property welcomes light into the very heart of the home and offers an all-weather decking area, plus central heating and cooling throughout. Located at the very end of a quiet terrace, number two is surrounded by equally neat, quality designed and built homes within the family oriented Western Park Estate. Security is paramount from the moment you enter the home, with security doors fitted to all external entries and a fully monitored security system.

To your right you will find the first of four bedrooms - double in size with built-in robe and a unique stained glass feature window. Following into the main hub of the home is the open plan kitchen, lounge and dining areas, with the formal lounge separate and able to be closed off. The kitchen features an electric fan oven, gas hotplates, dishwasher and spacious chef’s pantry. The lounge/dining room is conveniently tiled and enjoys 180-degree views out to the undercover entertainment area thanks to two beautiful French doors and additional windows covering an entire wall. The formal lounge also looks out to the yard/ entertainment area, though is much more private - enough to easily change the room into a cinema. Continuing through the house and the laundry, with its ample storage, gives way to an extremely conveniently located room - far enough out of the way to be private and sound-proof and with external access. This room easily lends itself to someone who wants to conduct a business from home, use it as a teenage hide-away, rumpus room or even a man cave. Leading directly out from the ‘man cave’ is an oversize double garage. Back inside and continuing along the hallway will find you at bedrooms two and three - both queen-size with ceiling fans and built-in robes. The master bedroom is king size with fan and two vertical feature windows. His and her walkthrough robes lead to the ensuite with shower, toilet and vanity. The main bathroom offers a bath and shower with convenient soap and shampoo dispenser and a separate toilet.

Outside, 2 Armstrong Terrace shines with a perfectly manicured, established but low-maintenance garden, double gates to the side for camper-van or trailer and an enviable undercover area. Basically split in two, the first area (opposite the family room) is hexagonal in shape, decked and fully undercover. The second (to the side of the first) is paved and offers a convenient shadecloth. Don’t miss your chance to inspect this quality, versatile property.

The ball is up for round one between Albury and Yarrawonga.
Fierce rivals win respect Simon
Says with SIMON CORR LAST Saturday while broadcasting the highly anticipated round one encounter between league heavy weights Albury and Yarrawonga, I experienced what sport is really about. Yes, it was your typical hyped up battle between the two, with plenty of muscle flexing and off-the-ball scuffles, but what transpired after an accidental clash during the course of play filled me with immense pride and respect for all involved in the game. Albury Tiger James McQuillan received accidental high contact seven minutes into the second quarter as he attempted to gather the football. The immediate impact of the contact saw James lying motionless on the deck of the Albury Sportsground. The seriousness of the injury was evident when surrounding players desperately gestured for help and assistance. When the professional and qualified football trainers arrived they immediately requested an ambulance to ensure James was in no danger. Since the initial clash occurred until James was prepared for transport from the ground about 25 minutes transpired without play. There was speculation of an early half time
break and much consultation between players and umpires. Such was the concern by both clubs for the injured McQuillan that they agreed to abandon the game and call it a draw. Both teams made their way to the ambulance and applauded young James as he departed for further treatment. It was an incredibly traumatic time for all involved and these two battle-hardened enemies could not have shown any more respect. When push came to shove all involved showed incredible care and concern, and I was left with absolute admiration for the way the incident was handled by clubs and officials. True sportsmanship is not dead, and while we all love to win it is extremely gratifying to see that at the end of the day we can recognise that it is just a game. The care displayed last week will not and should not be forgotten and is testament to why these are truly two champion clubs. (At the time of writing, the extent of James McQuillan’s injury is unknown, however our thoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery are obviously with him, his family and club). Victories last weekend to the Wodonga Raiders and the Lavington Panthers have certainly ensured they have started their campaigns on the right foot. The new look Raiders were confident of home victory and is just reward for a lot of hard work put into the club in the off season. Lavington unveiled their new look forward line
with Justin Koschitzke and Adam Prior, however it was the men they had relied heavily on to score goals last year that got the job done. Myles Aalbers and Adam Flagg no doubt benefitted from not getting attention from their opponents the number one defenders and kicked five and four goals respectively. This weekend another two teams get to open their season’s account as the second half of the opening round is played out. North Albury will showcase a very young line up and attempt to put a tumultous off season behind them when they meet the Wangaratta Rovers at home on Saturday. Stalwart Dan Leslie will shoulder much of the work load for the young Hoppers this season and will find himself busy to say the least if he starts in defence. The Rovers, like Lavington, have lacked a big-bodied forward target last year and the arrival of big man Daniel Archer at the Hawks could be a godsend. It is expected Leslie will get the job on curtailing Archer’s influence a battle I am very much looking forward to. The Rovers are a genuine top five contender, and while supporters of the Hoppers are optimistic of their chances, I am expecting a convincing victory to the away team. Wangaratta and Corowa Rutherglen will complete the round on Saturday night, and while the Roos to many still remain a largely unknown entity, the midfielder power of the Magpies in Grossman, Allan and Dale should prove to be too strong in the end.
