CELEBRATE CULTURE PICTURE JOLENE OGLE
United Synergy’s annual Booin Gari festival went off with a bang on Tuesday as hundreds of people packed the Ernest Street Park to learn about local indigenous culture, watch indigenous dancers, and be entertained by local bands The Floating Bridges and OKA.
“We are part of the community” OPEN LETTER FROM BRETT GODFREY, CO-OWNER, MAKEPEACE ISLAND “I refer to the story ‘Riverfront Rumble’ dated April 3, and specifically to the comments made by Ms Natalie Miller of Cambridge Court and a disappointing lack of fair treatment from Council.
Ms Miller states: “We bought this house in 2006 before Sir Richard bought the island”, further she states that it was a very quiet area. The fact is that we have owned and used the island since 2003 and our use of the
island has not varied in that time. I suggest the area is still quiet in 2014 and, providing we comply with the measures accepted by us, it will remain a place we all can peacefully enjoy. Ms Miller was invited to the island earlier this year to discuss her concerns but her comments in Noosa Today failed to acknowledge, as she did to us, that noise often emanates from other sources on the river. For example, on any given Saturday night in summer our guests have to put up
with loud music and partying aboard houseboats moored in the river, often well into the early hours of the morning. This is not specified to divert our responsibilities but to recognise that there are many potential sources of noise and the Council should treat each of us equitably. Makepeace Island was purchased and has been used by Sir Richard Branson and myself for more than 10 years. In our time in this community not one, repeat that, not one complaint was made to us or from the
Council to us by anyone other than the one concern raised by Ms Miller. We are respectful of our neighbours and the change in use sought will simply allow our 10 rooms to be offered for individual sale instead of someone renting the entire property. As anyone who wishes to understand our request to Council would appreciate this will be advantageous to our neighbours. Renting out the entire property to one group is often going to create more noise than individual rooms booked by different guest groups. Common
sense should see this request supported, if noise is really an issue. Ms Miller and her family and, of course, our other neighbours have the right to enjoy their neighbourhood. What Ms Miller may not be aware of is that we have in fact agreed to noise restrictions throughout the day and night, parking constraints, boat use after 10pm and overnight guest number limitations to get our application through, even though these were not required of us before the application.

life in Thailand but then fell ill and had to return home for treatment. The high regard in which he was held was very evident last September, when friends and fellow actors held a benefit night at Rococo’s to help pay for his treat-

Amidst the colour and fun of the annual Noosa Netball Association March Past on Saturday, friends and family took the time to remember Alan Covey and unveil a memorial plaque. Alan, one of netball’s most dedicated and long serving volunteers, passed away last December. Alan, and wife Sylvia, have been involved and serving on committees for more than 20 years. In 2009 they were both awarded Life Membership Medals. The Association said Alan was a tireless volunteer, putting his hand to any task and would be greatly missed. Sylvia, children Alyson and David and granddaughter Eden were presented with the plaque, which will be mounted on the clubhouse walls. (March Past pictures, page 40)
ning changes in the pipeline for Queensland, Council considers it’s not the right time to embark on a completely new Noosa Plan. Instead, it will review and, if necessary, update the plan to see us through the next few years. Mayor Noel Playford said public consultation was a crucial part of the review. Council wants feedback on
issues like housing choice, businesses, rural enterprises, vegetation protection, flood hazards and the use of community land. It’s been a bittersweet week for Noosa, as we welcomed new faces, farewelled an old face and remembered someone special.
On Tuesday morning at The J, Deputy Mayor Bob Abbot welcomed 45 new citizens to Australia, at the new Noosa Council’s first citizenship ceremony. Our new locals originate from 15 different countries around the globe but all are proud to now call Noosa home. Speaking in Parliament, Mr Elmes said land clearing, development, traffic and domestic dogs were taking their toll on Noosa’s koala population. “Koalas are iconic, and listed on both the State and Federal threatened species lists. We must do whatever we can to protect them while balancing the requirements of development and providing housing for the state’s ever increasing population,” Mr Elmes said. “That requires all parties involved to work together to devise strategies to support their preservation. It’s not good enough for environmentalists to say development is bad, just as it’s not accept-
able for developers to push ahead with projects without considering environmental impacts. “Most koalas hit by cars or ravaged by dogs are killed or so badly injured that they need to be put down. Those that do survive after treatment are routinely returned to the area in which they were found. It’s a policy which has been in force for years. “I’m not sure it’s the most appropriate course of action because the returned koalas are often mauled by a dog or hit by a car again. “A second issue impacting upon koala numbers is the practice of euthanasing
female koalas that are found to have chlamydia. The Newman Government has invested $3.2 million into research to find a cure. “In the meantime, there’s no reason why treated koalas can’t be released back into the wild,” Mr Elmes said. “I’ve talked previously to the Environment Minister about finding an alternate way of dealing with these twin issues which are affecting the state’s koala population. I am working on an alternate strategy involving Noosa, which will provide greater safety for injured and diseased koalas, and improve their survival rates.”

Noosa Council has joined with TransLink to provide free Noosa bus services over the busy Easter period. Hop on board and enjoy Noosa’s beaches, attractions, shopping and dining without the hassle of finding a car park. From Monday, April 14, to Monday, April 21, all local Noosa Sunbus services are free to all residents and visitors (with the exception of Routes 620, 622, 630 & 631). The Free Holiday Buses are designed to reduce traffic congestion in the Noosa region and to encourage people to give public transport a go. For more information visit council’s website www.noosa. qld.gov.au or call 5329 6500. Timetables are also available at www. translink.com.au, at libraries, Council offices, Noosa Leisure Centre, Noosa Aquatic Centre, tourist information centres and shopping centres. Calls for more koala crossing signs and traffic calming in koala hotspots won’t work, according to Queensland Koala Crusaders president Meghan Halverson.
“Given the low number of surviving koalas, the time for introducing effective koala mitigation measures on the roads in Noosa Heads has realistically passed us by. The wider Noosa area already has more koala crossing signs than known surviving koalas,” she said. “Council resources should be directed to higher level koala conservation efforts. Qld Koala Crusaders supports the type of big picture proposal recently documented by Greg Reddaway in Noosa Today. This shouldn’t be pursued in isolation, but we are sorely in need of the right type of ‘hero’ project that has many positive spin-offs. “We agree with the notion that the long-term future for wild koalas lies outside of the urban footprint. That is not to say we would leave our few urban koalas behind.” Ms Halverson said a similar conclusion by Gold Coast City Council some years ago
resulted in a major “beachto-bush” koala translocation project. “As a result, the new Coomera town centre will not be a place where koalas die under the wheels of cars. “At the same time, the headland section of Noosa National Park still presents a ray of opportunity for a modest koala conservation project. It does need to be a managed project, based on recent research and learning. While the area has a certain carrying capacity for koalas, its potential for awareness-raising and education about koalas, and all other resident wildlife, is incalculable. Minister Glen Elmes “gets it”. “Recent research from both the University of Sydney and the Australian National University concluded that it is not just food species that is needed for koala survival, but a combination of trees is also important. The koalas’ shelter trees in particular need to be bigger, older trees that can offer a relatively cool resting place during the day. Noosa National Park aside, we believe the outer reaches of our Shire can offer the best variety of trees required by koalas living a free range existence.”

Council’s ‘No’ to Noosa on Weyba may cost ratepayers JIM FAGAN Noosa Council is prepared to spend up to $2 million in legal costs to defend its decision to refuse the Noosa on Weyba development application
This was made clear by Mayor Noel Playford last Thursday when councillors agreed with a recommendation from their senior planning staff to reject the application for a housing estate on the shores of Lake Weyba. Among the 17 concerns listed by planners were the development’s likely impact on water quality in Lake Weyba and the Noosa River system,
koala conservation, aboriginal cultural heritage, bushfire dangers, infrastructure, roads and public transport. Chairman of the council’s planning committee, Councillor Frank Wilkie, said more than a thousand public submissions had been received, most of them against the proposal. He said the application attempted to house 2,370 people in over a thousand dwellings on rural and open space conservation land that is outside the urban footprint, in an environmentally sensitive area that drains directly into Lake Weyba. The application was made under the provisions of state biodiversity offset regulations, but council staff found that ‘Noosa on Weyba’ would
have a “net adverse impact on koala conservation values.” Cr Wilkie said that while the developers proposed to hand over 139 hectares to Noosa National Park, at the same time they planned the intensive clearing of more than two thousand trees with a net loss to the koala habitat. The Mayor said it was harder to think of a larger parcel of land more constrained and in private ownership than this land in this area. “Sadly, because of the value of land in places like this, if material changes of use can be obtained, we’re going to have more of these sorts of applications “Sadly, also, we’re going to be resisting them where there is not such a
community benefit from the particular application. That’s what our planning scheme is all about and that’s what the Noosa Plan is all about. “The worst part about all this is it is going to cost the ratepayers money to defend our decisions. There will be times when we will have to grit our teeth because, if we don’t, then we trash the Noosa Plan and that’s the blueprint for the community’s future and as decided by this community. “It’s a heavy price to pay and sometimes I would hope the State Government would see this differently from what they have in the past because the sort of thing we’re facing doesn’t apply to the rest of Australia.
The system allows for applications and appeals against decisions that are simply upholding legislation, in this case our own local plan and the South East Qld Regional Plan which has the weight of the whole South East Queensland and the State Government behind it. “That is very sad when we are looking at the potential of spending, who knows, a million or two million dollars to defend our decision in this case when the application is clearly not in this community’s interests either environmentally, socially, culturally or economically and the only people who would benefit from it, were it to be approved by a court, would be the proponents.”

JANE
GOODALL CELEBRATING HER 80TH YEAR at
Junction Bowls site: Coles to meet Council JIM FAGAN A team from Coles will sit down with Noosa Council and staff officers early next month for talks on what is acceptable for the redevelopment of the Noosa Heads Bowls Club site at Noosa Junction.
“We are not proceeding with an appeal against the Council’s decision to refuse the bowls club application,” a Coles’ spokesperson told Noosa Today. “We are hoping to work with councillors on future planning for the area which will support the community and local traders’ needs.” On February 5 councillors re-
jected the supermarket giant’s development application which called for an 1180 square metre “big box” liquor store, a hotel of nearly the same size, plus shops, office space and residential units. The plan also included taking over a council-owned public parking area and some of the nearby Pinnaroo Park and councillors decided the proposal development raised “significant conflicts with the Noosa Plan without demonstrating any major community benefit.” Council’s decision was backed by Noosa Residents and Ratepayers Association but 82 traders at Noosa Junction petitioned the council, saying they supported in principle Coles’ application. Commenting on the discussion
next month, which has May 7 as a possible date, Noosa Council CEO, Brett de Chastel, said, “We’ve agreed to sit down with them in an informal workshop. They will tell us what they want to do and what will work commercially for them. We will say what we think will work on the site, what we are flexible on and what we are not flexible on. “There will be an independent facilitator who is a town planner. The intention is to come up with a design we can work with and from which Coles can launch another application. “It makes sense to talk rather than fight in court. We understand they have commercial imperatives but this is also a really high profile site and we only get one chance to make it work,” Mr de Chastel said.

“We are part of the community” FROM PAGE 1 What people may not be aware of is that the Council’s response has been to deem further draconian measures on the basis of one complainant to enforce unworkable conditions that they must understand will set us up to fail. A set of additional ‘rules’ that, in fact, not even our neighbour Ms Miller must comply with! During our time in Tewantin, Makepeace has actively supported the community complying with many charity requests and assistance with local businesses. This has not been done for fanfare
but a genuine responsibility to and wish for community inclusion. Ms Miller wrote to the Council after X-Factor was filmed on the Island and we understood the very valid concerns she raised. However, X-Factor was not something we pursued. We were asked by Tourism Queensland and Sunshine Coast Destinations Limited and we agreed under the weight of expectation to host the four-day activity because of the invaluable marketing opportunity of millions of people around the world seeing Noosa and its importance to local tourism. X-Factor viewers are not our guest
demographic but we agreed knowing it would benefit both the community and, specifically, local businesses. The further restrictions imposed by the Council as a result of only one letter provided to us in over 10 years places us in an invidious position and it is simply and unnecessarily bureaucratic. I would appeal for someone to ask, why after 10 years would the Council wish us to cease supporting the Noosa
Food and Wine festival, hosting charity lunches, or evening cocktail functions for local tourism operators? Sadly this red tape only serves blinkered bureaucracy, not the community they are asked to serve. To see this approval succeed we agreed to noise limitations and not to exceed the capacity of the infrastructure. We are conscious of our responsibilities and feel that sometimes having a perceived tall poppy as an owner is not always a blessing. We feel we should be entitled to, but willing to submit to, the same noise and visitor numbers as our neighbours. What has been asked of us is a higher standard, hence our request to the Council to seek an equitable outcome, not the false ‘gift’ they have provided.”

Tait Duke Cottage is finally on the move If houses could speak, Tait Duke Cottage would have quite a story to tell. Built in the middle of Tewantin in 1919 for Charles Tait and Emma Duke, this important piece of local heritage was moved temporarily to Wallace Park in 2009, and now it may be on the move again to a new home just down the road. This year, Heather McNeice and Krista Waddell are getting ready to do it again, all in the name of charity. Trekking through Bhutan to deliver educational supplies to remote villages is an annual event for Heather and Krista, the recently appointed co-chairs of the Australian Himalayan Foundation (AHF) Queensland fundraising committee. Heather first visited Bhutan in 2010 with her daughter Molly, then aged 11, and said she was inspired by the children’s living conditions as well as their financial situation to return and raise funds to help improve
$60,000 for the charity through annual fundraising events and treks. This year, seven more trekkers will join Heather and Krista to tackle the six-day Druk Path trek that will take the team through blue pine forests, high ridges and pristine lakes, as they head to remote schools to deliver educational supplies. To help fund their great work, the women will hold three events throughout the year, Heather and Krista with their guide, Tshering including the return of their sell-out luncheon at Gastons, Noosa Heads, on August Norbu, on the treacherous Snowman trek 15; Ladies Trivielle night at the Boathouse, where they faced a three day blizzard Noosaville on June 6, and a new event, the Summit Ball, to be held at the Sheraton Nootheir education. Heather tells of children who trek for sa, on September 20. If you would like to attend an event or hours a day to attend schools where there is no furniture, no stationery supplies and no would like to sponsor the Summit Ball, heating in a place where temperatures can phone Heather on 0448 739 946 or email heathermcneice@mac.com. easily reach well below zero. Bookfest back with 20,000 books The volunteers of Rotary Noosa Heads Daybreak have been hard at work sorting and pricing over 20,000 books for their annual Bookfest, this May.
Now in its 14th year, Bookfest Noosa raises much-needed funds for local charities and will
be held at the Noosa Bicentennial Hall from May 2 to 4, 9am to 5pm. Bookfest spokesperson Jeff Williams said the Rotary Club of Noosa Heads Daybreak was excited to present a great selection of over 20,000 books, covering all tastes and genres, at a price
everyone can afford. “Book buyers can also take comfort from the fact that all the funds raised benefit very worthy causes and improve the quality of life of a great many people,” he said. This year, Bookfest expects to raise more than $25,000 for
Queensland Guide Dogs, the Nambour Hear and Say Centre, and Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club Access Program. Donations of good quality books are still welcome. Drop any books to Coastal Drycleaners and Launderers, 27 Eumundi Road, Noosaville.

Tormented by technology?
Secret women’s business a success! With only $15 in her pocket and a dream to sell jewellery, Jane Meredith opened the very first Secrets store in Noosa Heads 14 years ago.
Technology moves so quickly these days it’s easy to get left behind. Much of it can be pretty daunting - especially if you don’t have a tech savvy friend, nephew, niece or grandchild to help you out!
Technology tutors is a new service aimed at those who just need some help to get the most out of this new technology – smartphones, tablets, Facebook and all the newly updated word processors, spreadsheets and presentation packages. It’s not training, it’s one-onone tutoring focused on solving a specific problem. Technology tutors offers an opportunity to learn just the bits you need. There are plenty of people around who fix computers and install software but who do you call when you can’t get Word to do what you want it to, or get your email working on your smartphone or tablet? Give Technology Tutoring a call on 0409 831 026.

Together with co-founder Dietmar Gorlich, Jane became aware that not all women could afford the diamond of their dreams. “Beautiful designer jewellery with stones larger than 1ct were simply out of reach for more than 90 per cent of women,” Jane said. Being motivated to change this and to be able to offer women an alternative, Jane and Dietmar researched the new technology in diamond simulants that was emerging in
the late 90s. “We were amazed at what we discovered - a stone that looked like a diamond, sparkled like a diamond and had brilliance that would last a lifetime,” Jane said. The opening of the first Secrets store brought their dream to life, giving women the opportunity to be confident wearing beautifully crafted fine jewellery, while enjoying the same empowerment as women who wear the most expensive gem stones. “I have to bring beautiful to everyone,” Jane said. From humble beginnings with one store in Noosa Heads, Secrets has since flourished as women and men realise the benefits of owning a Se-
crets’ simulant diamond. Now located throughout Australia, Jane said over 45 per cent of rings sold are engagement rings with couples excited to own a larger gem stone at a more affordable price. “And it can be your secret,” Jane said. “No one needs to know you’re wearing a simulant diamond, if you don’t want to reveal your secret.” With 14th Birthday celebrations well underway, Secrets’ will offer in-store specials and cupcakes this Friday and Saturday to mark their special day. You can find Secrets in Bay Village, 18 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads or visit www.secrets-shhh.com to view their latest collection.

Mortgage Matters Privacy Act changes to affect home buyers Recent changes to Australia’s credit reporting regime means that potential home buyers may now find it easier to obtain finance. Under these recent amendments to the Privacy Act 1988, lenders are potentially able to see a person’s credit repayment history on all credit accounts as well as any credit infringements they may have. This is good news for borrowers as lenders will now be able to see your entire financial history – the good and bad. As such, if you have managed to pay your bills on time, this may increase your chances of obtaining a loan as it will prove to the lender that you are a model borrower. On the flipside, if you have been known to miss a couple of credit repayments by more than 30 days, then you may have some work to do. So, if you’re a potential borrower who hasn’t met all of your financial obligations on time in the past, it is not too late to turn things around. Contact us today on 5474 4100.

SCHOOLS TODAY
Literacy, numeracy boost for local schools The literacy and numeracy of school students in Noosa will be boosted following the implementation of a targeted education plan by the Newman LNP Government.
8045-115
www.thej.com.au
Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said plans submitted by state schools to implement the Great Results Guarantee initiative were now approved and had been published on state school websites. “Queensland’s education system needs to be at the top of its game in order for the state to be able to innovate and rise to the challenges of tomorrow. It is critically important to continue to invest in our younger generation but to better plan that investment and measure improvement.” Mr Elmes said. “The Great Results Guarantee has enabled our schools to make a decision on what will best meet their literacy and numeracy requirements and implement that change on a local level with input from the local
community, teachers and students. “Noosaville State School, for example, planned to develop and deliver a multi-faceted and co-ordinated approach to improve reading skills through utilizing recognized academic programs and by engaging additional teachers-aides, volunteers and parents. It has received a grant of almost $150,000 to fund this considered program. “Sunshine Beach State School planned to address literacy and numeracy issues at a very early stage, to ensure that all students meet the National Minimum Standard and also to stimulate talented learners. It has received a grant of almost $200,000 to fund its program to address the needs which it identified. “Improved literacy and numeracy are essential to taking Queenslanders from kindergarten to meaningful employment. These skills enable our students to develop their full potential and participate fully in our society and our growing economy,” Mr Elmes said.
It is critically important to continue to invest in our younger generation but to better plan that investment and measure improvement.

COAST INVASION A new species has invaded the Sunshine Coast. This large species has migrated from the Western Suburbs of Sydney where it quickly colonised and now dominates the area. Around the Sunshine Coast, the lesser, smaller species of the same genus is being destroyed at an alarming rate by this beast which, by its voracious consumption, threatens water supplies, natural habitats and causes disharmony within the area in which it chooses to colonise. This new species has been named the McMansion.

NO TO NIMBYS It seems that the nimbys (not in my back yard) are at it again. The rope swings at Weyba Creek have been there for many years and are no harm to anyone. There are a few new arrivals to the Esplanade and I fear they are making a big deal and a lot of noise about nothing. I walk or drive past the swings every day and I have never seen a camper for eight days at a time. It is correct that some bollards are missing but nobody actually drives further into the reserve, except for one recent weekend when a large group of locals had a BBQ and no harm was done. All I see are groups of young people having harmless out-
door active fun. I imagine these complainants also make noise about this generation and how they stay indoors and play computer games all the time. If the council’s infrastructure and services committee really want to do something positive in the area they could look at shoring up the creek banks along the whole area, creating some sort of jetty or beach for people to enjoy and providing more bins. The last thing this town needs to do is take away fun, free outdoor activities for our young people.

LOOK FOR EVIDENCE As a scientist, I look for empirical evidence to convince me of the correctness of a theory. As there is nothing more than man-made computer models to prove that mankind is now responsible for climatic changes (which have previously always occurred naturally), I am inclined to agree with John Casey, President of the Space and Science Research Corporation in the USA, who states that: “The theory of man-made global warming and climate change based on human greenhouse gas emissions is the greatest scientific fraud ever perpetrated on the world’s citizens”.

PIE IN THE SKY Each time I read a letter from Steve Hall I thank my lucky stars he is not running the country. It angers me the way he twists the climate debate by suggesting those who doubt the man-made global warming theory are anti-science. The fact is Steve, those of us who don’t subscribe to your belief are basing our judgements on strong scientific evidence that you deny. And Steve, contrary to your trust in the United Nations, many of us are dubious about the hidden agenda behind the IPCC’s climate agenda. Non-believers are less likely to be politically aligned to some big right wing conspiracy than the strong likelihood Steve Hall is a blind faith Greens supporter. Although the Climate Faithful may think if Australia reduces its carbon emissions the world will be a better place, that’s just pie in the sky.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS If the Noosa Biosphere is so special how come it is one of 621 Biosphere Reserves in the world? Are we spending too much time and effort on something that is really worth very little? According to UNESCO, “Biosphere Reserves are meant to demonstrate a balanced relationship between people and nature (eg
encourage sustainable development)” and yet Gympie is part of a Biosphere Reserve. Hell, even the Sunshine Coast Council is supposedly applying for Biosphere Reserve status! I think Council’s time and energy could be much better spent. Noosa Biosphere Ltd has done so little that most of the population still don’t know what a Biosphere Reserve is, and they have managed to spend between $250,000 and $500,000 of our ratepayers’ money. Get on with what really matters guys, Biosphere status will soon mean diddly squat!

WRONG MESSAGE I can’t comprehend Magistrate Callaghan considering Virgil Power’s legal ambitions, and recording no conviction, when ONE PUNCH KILLS. It’s not the message we want or need for our young people’s safety nor our tourist image. Perhaps it was because his father Virgil Power Snr is a solicitor? The victim has to deal with the expense, physical and emotional damage for a long while. If the tables were turned and Virgil Power Jnr got smacked in the face and suffered the same damage would the sentence be different?
TACKLE UNFAIR Thank you for bringing to our attention Alex McKinnon, injured while playing for Newcastle Knights. It’s supposed to be a sport, but I’ve always questioned the sporting aspect of it when a player, already handicapped by carrying a ball, can be brought down to earth by any number of players. Photographs show four players in that tackle - Alex and the three who threw him down. One on one is fair, but three highly fit, muscled and heavily trained sportsmen threw that tackle into a debatable and questionable area. If three men tackled one man on the street it would be classed as assault. Why should it be different on a sports field? Change the rules, and we won’t have more Alex’s spending their lives in wheelchairs.

Mason racks up the blues He may have performed more than 2,000 live shows, had eight international tours and played music since he was six-yearsold, but seasoned musician Mason Rack still gets nervous before a gig.
“You could do so many shows and still get nervous,” Mason said. “You want people to respond and you want it (the music) to sound okay.” “There’s a part of me that knows it will be okay, because it always has been. But there’s a part that’s nervous.” It’s a surprising admission from a man who was born with music in his blood. Growing up with his musician father Billy Rack on the Gold Coast, Mason started his musical adventure with percussion at age six before moving to the drums at the age of eight, where he was able to play any style of music. Fast forward and Mason Rack, his
band, gravelly voice and wicked musical tricks, are a permanent fixture on the festival scene performing at any good Blues festival on the East coast, such as the Byron Bay Blues Festival and Blues on Broadbeach. Mason calls his music alternative-blues-rock, but a term that truly captures the uniqueness of this band, is yet to be invented. The hard sound pumped out by this band dares you to resist the urge to jump up and dance, while a switch to blues that slides like silk sends you to another place and another time. Along with Canadian drummer Joel Purkess and Jamie Roberts on bass, Mason delivers his signature vocals and lead guitar in an intimate gig at Tewantin Noosa RSL, on Thursday, April 17, from 8pm. Phone 5447 1766 for dinner and courtesy bus reservations.

Publishing panic prompts 80s flashback LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT
On the eve of another departure overseas, I find myself rifling through archive boxes for information that will help me close a chapter of my latest book, due at the publisher’s on Monday, just as I hop on a plane.
I know it’s in one of these dust-covered boxes, but which one? I have no time to devote to this, but finding the information is vital. I’m starting to panic when I pick up a small, blue Collins Notebook (“3515 Faint”) in surprisingly good nick. I open it up. On the first page I have written, “Small Book of Travels – 1983-86”, and underneath that, “on vit d’amour et d’eau fraiche”, we live on love and fresh water, which was a reasonable summary of our financial position at the time. But, then, as now, lack of funds never seemed to stop us hitting the road. I pick up the diary for a closer inspection and two index cards fall out of the back. One is a mud map of a piece of land in Bali with the message, “$7000, Hurry” scribbled across the top in black ink. The other card is signed by the actor Bill Murray, with two New York phone numbers under it, and what look likes a blood stain across the bottom left corner, but it is more likely some exotic sauce from a very messy lunch we had at the Malaya Restaurant in George Street, Sydney. It was an interesting period in my life. I flip through the pages, reading at random: Tuesday, 9 August 1983: Arrive Schipol Airport (Amsterdam) after 32-hour flight through Denpasar, Jakarta, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt, exhausted. MiLANO to ToRINO FOR Alfa’s Supermini
Full moon at Gatton Sprints
CHRIS NIXON
The first Queensland street sprint of the year took place in midMarch at Gatton. Once again the Downs Motorsport Club and the extremely dedicated committee and club members put together an event which catered to almost 140 competitors running in 19 classes, the biggest being Class O – unregistered cars above 5 litre.
For a change in the car world, there’s no daft symbolism about winds, spirits or stallions in the name of Alfa Romeo’s smallest model, the MiTo. ‘Mi’ stands for Milano, ‘To’ for Torino and for the MiTo Alfa relocated production from Milan to Turin.
The MiTo is refreshingly honest in other ways, too, a small sports hatchback in the tradition of the Sud, 33 and 147. A significant upgrade has taken ‘small’ to new limits with the addition of an engine of only two cylinders and 875cc capacity. The turbocharged TwinAir MiTo engine – shared with the Fiat 500 - pushes out a credita-
ble 77 kiloWatts and 145 Newtonmetres, average consumption of 4.2 litres per 100 kms and CO2 exhaust emissions of just 99 grams per kilometre. And the price is as skinny as the engine. Less than a year ago, the least expensive MiTo was a 1.4 turbo at $31,990. The importer slashed that to $25,200 in February and now has introduced the range-opening TwinAir for $22,500. The award-winning engine is the essence of Euro eco-hitech, but enthusiasts may be more tempted by the existing MultiAir 1.4 with 99 kW. Its base model, Progression, with five-speed manual transmission, is now $700 less than in February 2013 - $24,500, or $26,500 with a six-speed double-clutch unit. The top-ofthe-line MiToDistinctive 1.4 now costs $28,000.
MAX PARNELL
More than 18 Sunshine Coast drivers made their way to the industrial estate track, making up close to 14 per cent of the entries. In perfect sunny but hot weather a 60 years-plus competitor and two whose combined age would be lucky to make 60-plus formed the first group of three to be flagged away to get the 15th Gatton Sprints underway. Unfortunately the full moon must have played a part as 18 cars suffered crash damage during the two days - more than the total for the previous several years combined! Two cars crashed out of the event on the first sighting lap while others sort out the best lines around the one kilometre circuit and built up for the explosive last lap. Fortunately no-
Ian Marshall in the Datsun 1600
one was seriously hurt although one Sunshine Coast driver required hospital treatment, testament to the essential need for a roll cage and other safety factors built into the cars. Several really nicely presented cars were badly damaged, a real shame to see someone’s pride and joy taken home on the back of a tilt tray. Cars ranged from Aussie race cars to a NASCAR Pontiac with some fantastic older cars, such as the 55 FJ and 58 FC Holdens joining the 57 Jaguar and the XD and XE Falcons. Noosa Beach member Damien Maher drove the Nissan Silvia to a sub-40 second run on the tight circuit, clearly the fastest of the locals. With five Noosa drivers being separated by less than half a second the competition was the closest seen in many events.
A big crowd-pleaser was Robby Mountfield (Brisbane) leading the Federal drift team with some spectacular driving during the break between rounds. Outright “slick chick” went to Bec Baker (Jimboomba) in the Audi S4 closely followed by Kristy Holter (NBCCC) in the Pontiac V8 while Courtney Gersekowski (Gatton) took out third in the VB Commodore. Fastest run for the weekend went to Nev Scott in the highly modified Subaru WRX with a brilliant drive of 35.93secs, Steve Faulks was just 0.7secs behind in his WRX while Corey Baker took third place 0.77secs further back in the Audi S4. The next street sprints look like being Oakey on July 19/20 and another big entry list with close competition is highly likely.

More grunt for your dollar MAX PARNELL Motoring enthusiasts wanting a restoration project are increasingly turning to bikes. Advantages lie in reduced storage room needed, limited complexity and achievable final costs. There is also the challenge of finding the right part, often difficult if a rare or little known brand is chosen.
Not advertising the location or valuable nature of a bike is a good idea as many owners have found out the hard way.
Honda CBX
Even a large bike is easy to steal and generally easy to on-sell. The hidden treasures lurking beneath houses on the Sunshine Coast may well surprise: one owner has several bikes in his collection including a Honda CBX. For those who follow the development history of the world’s most popular bike manufacturer this is a true classic.
The CBX never proved to be a great sales success. The CBX was introduced in 1979 with a six cylinder engine across the frame. Sporting 24 valves and 6 carbs the 1047cc engine produced 103 BHP at 9000 rpm and had a claimed top speed of 136 mph. The bike was introduced to re-establish Honda on the sports b i k e scene after strong competition from others such as the Ka-
wasaki Z series. Based on the 250cc six cylinder racing bike from the 60s, the very high technology developed by Soichiro Irimajiri was transferred to the road bike. Success did not come and later models up to 1984 had a fairing and were marketed as the fastest production bike available but only for a short time! The CBX never proved to be a great sales success, perhaps due to being expensive, heavy and complex. At the time magazines reported “routine engine repairs introduced the need for a second mortgage”. The CBX of our enthusiast was originally purchased by a pilot from Melbourne who added it to his collection of 20 bikes. Not used as a regular ride it covered only 30,000km in the first 21 years. It was then purchased by a 72 year old from Western Australia. It is now with the third owner and being in beautiful original condition is regularly ridden as the maker intended, as a high tech Sports To u r i n g Bike.
The super sleek ‘68 E-type Jaguar
The best of British
The Breed Motorshop may be the new kid on the block but, with Terrence Godfrey at the helm, there’s a lifetime of experience and knowhow. After 10 years of semi-retirement, it was Terrence’s lifelong love of British cars that prompted him to open the Cooroy workshop last October. “I opened in response to the need on the Sunshine Coast for a quality service and repair business that properly knew and understood Jaguar cars, as well as other British-built sports marques,” Terrence said. “The business is equipped with efficient analysis and onboard diagnostic/decoding equipment to provide a fast and accurate understanding of any issues present with your car. In addition, we have a direct online connection to the latest Jaguar service information and model-by-model bulletins and updates.” So why has he gone back into business?
“Because I genuinely love to do it! I developed a special interest in Jaguars and British cars in general when I was a young man and that’s never left me. Even today when brands of motorcars have become a little generic, there is still something a little bit special that defines the breed of Jaguar,” he said. Currently in the workshop there is an E-type Jaguar undergoing a full restoration, along with a Jaguar MK2, and an MGA which was damaged in a flood. There is also a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, in need of a top end engine overhaul. In addition to the restoration and service work the business also provides a classic car brokerage. On the books at the moment are several special classics for sale, including a 1966 Daimler 2.5litre, complete with original documentation; a 1973 Triumph TR6 with a freshly rebuilt overdrive and fuel system upgrade, and a nice two-tone 1953 MGTD, which has just had a general overhaul and is now ready for the road.

Annual show pays homage to Unk A new category at this year’s Cooroora Wood & Craft Show – May 9 and 10 - will pay tribute to long-time club member, the late Keith ‘Unk’ Beckmann.
Keith’s lifelong passion for wood saw him complete nearly 25 years club membership, and work on everything from planting seedlings to milling and woodworking. Jim Pound, Vice President of Cooroora Woodworkers Club, said Keith loved woodturning and mentored many new members in the craft. “With every new species of timber he encountered he added it to his library of turned finials which now includes over 200 species, both native and exotics. The collection is on display in our clubhouse in the Cooroy Lowermill Precinct.” The winner of the new Wood Art category will have their name engraved on the perpetual Beckmann Trophy.
Members of eight regional woodworking clubs are hard at work on their entries in the Inter-Club Competition. The prizes of power tools donated by Sunshine Mitre 10 will be a very welcome addition to any workshop. The winning club holds the Inter-Club trophy at their premises for the following 12 months. Each year the club runs a woodcraft raffle, which will be drawn on Saturday, May 10, at Cooroy Memorial Hall. The prize this year is a display cabinet created by Bob Bennett together with some other skilled members. As a bonus the contents of the cabinet – a number of beautiful crafted items showing members’ skills in turning, box making and carving, are included in the prize. Tickets are on sale at shopping centres and will also be available at the show. The Cooroora Wood & Craft Show is held in association with the Cooroy Fusion Festival.

Not a fling in sight! If you love the sound of bagpipes or your ancestors claim to be proud Scots, then get down to Noosa U3A every Monday from 9am to enjoy Scottish country dancing.
Keith ‘Unk’ Beckmann
The group meets in the Masonic Hall, Moorindil Street, Tewantin, across the road from U3A House. There is no leaping, no ‘flings’, not a sword in sight and you don’t have to wear a kilt! Dances are done in groups of six, eight or 10 people, so you don’t need a partner and they cater for all levels of ability. Now in its 13 year, the group is affiliated with Noosa U3A so you will need to be a member, which also allows you to join any other course or class offered and share in all the social activities. Classes are then just $2 each week. The group socialises over coffee and lunch the first Monday of every month with several other social functions throughout the year, including one each May, which hosts other dance groups. Tough new laws for animal cruelty Megan Wilson and Didge
JOLENE OGLE Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie has announced a new offence that will see animal torturers face seven years jail.
The new offence will be entered under the Criminal Code, rather than the Animal Care and Protection Act (2001), and will apply to “a person who unlawfully kills, seriously injures or causes an animal prolonged suffering and does so intending to inflict severe pain or suffering on the animal”. Mr Bleijie said the new offence would hopefully relieve the community’s frustration at seeing “people who have done terrible things to animals walk from court without serving jail time”. The RSPCA will also play a major role in bringing animal torturers to justice, with new powers to investigate and commence proceedings against someone accused of this new offence. RSPCA Queensland CEO Mark Townend welcomed the reforms, saying they “fill the gap in what the community expects when it comes to dealing with offenders who torture defenseless animals”.
“Our inspectors and staff have seen the horrific aftermath of serious cruelty to animals and a strong punishment and deterrent is needed,” he said. Local pet owner Megan Wilson, who adopted Didge almost two years ago, agrees and said harsher penalties were needed for people who intentionally hurt animals. “I don’t know how people can do it, hurt an animal. It makes no sense to me,” she said. “I’ve had Didge for almost two years. When I got her, I was told she was abused when she was a pup, and you can still see that in her face, the way she cowers when men are around and through her severe anxiety.” Megan said Didge’s anxiety is improving with the help of training, a routine and lots of love, but it has taken a long time. “When Didge came to live with me, she had had seven homes in two years. This only made her anxiety worse. She couldn’t go near a male, and would cower in the furthest corner,” she said. “You could see she was so sad, broken. But, now she smiles again. It sounds silly to say a dog can smile, but she really does. We still have a long way to go, but Didge will be okay.”
I don’t know how people can do it, hurt an animal.

Pizzas and views to dine for Overlooking the infinity pool, water park and tranquil wetland sanctuary, Dazza’s Bar at RACV Noosa Resort provides an inviting space for a relaxing lunch or even pre-dinner drinks and cocktails.
The laid-back bar is the ideal place to enjoy the Noosa sunset with refreshing beverages or snack under the market umbrellas; a perfect shady spot on a hot Noosa day. Dazza’s Bar wouldn’t be complete without a signature lunch item. ‘Dazza’s Burger’ is a delicious combination of lamb, goat’s cheese and Harissa ketchup, finished with piping hot fries for only $19. Top it off with a classic cocktail or refreshing icy cold beverage. Or why not enjoy a delicious wood-fired pizza, available on weekends or in the school holidays.
Flavours of the world will tempt your tastebuds with an array of pizza options available, sure to suit any taste, even for the kids. Using fresh local produce the chef’s creations include Cajun chicken, Crispy pork belly or Chilli prawn for something that little bit different or, for the pizza lover, traditional Hawaiian or Margherita, priced from $17. Pizzas can be eaten by the pool or lobby area, or taken back to your room for a relaxing easy meal. All day dining is available from 11am to 10pm daily with wood-fired pizzas a feature Thursday to Sunday, 5pm to 9pm, or nightly during school holidays. Hot buns that cross off gluten, grain Enjoying a freshly baked, hot crossed bun on Easter morning is a favourite tradition that most people take for granted but for the more than a quarter of a million Australians food allergies and intolerances have meant they missed out.

But thanks to gluten-free, grain-free expert and cookbook author, Tania Hubbard, this doesn’t have to be the case, especially with her new and improved hot-cross bun recipe. Tania said in the past, finding a great-tasting and nourishing gluten free hot cross bun recipe was hard to do, especially for anyone diagnosed with coeliac disease and gluten intolerance. Not only is it gluten and grain-free, it’s also sugar-free and dairyfree. Bake them yourself using Tania’s recipe, or you can purchase Tania’s bread mix, add a handful of dates and a little cinnamon and ginger and have your very own hot cross buns in the oven in minutes.
Hot Cross Buns INGREDIENTS 1 cup almond meal 2 tablespoons chia seeds 3/4 cups arrowroot/tapioca starch 3/4 cups dried dates 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon bi-carb (baking soda) 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 3 eggs Pinch salt 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons olive oil (use butter if you love it, or coconut oil if you prefer) METHOD
Preheat oven to 175C. Soak chia seeds in water whilst preparing the dry mix. Put all dry ingredients, including the dates, into a food processor and mix until dates break into small pieces.
Put dry mixture in a bowl and add eggs, soaked chia seeds, vinegar and olive oil. Mix until smooth. It’s meant to be thick so don’t be tempted to add any more liquid! Place mixture into a cupcake baking tray, or use a lamington tin and cut into squares. Bake for 25 minutes un-
til firm to the touch and golden. While the buns cool, make the cross. Either pipe it on using royal icing, or coconut butter. To make the latter, place 4 cups of unsweetened, dried coconut, shredded or flakes, in a food processor and mix until it forms a butter-like consistency.

Farmers’ Markets need your input Raise a glass! Residents and visitors are invited to take part in the Noosa Farmers’ Markets community survey, which is designed to better understand the needs of market customers and the community.
Noosa International Food and Wine Festival will bring the best of Australian and international wines and winemakers to Noosa for a fourday celebration, May 15-18.
Shane Stanley launched the market in November 2002 with just 28 stalls. Now, with over 85 stores each week and working with over 120 stall holders throughout the year, the market has become a part of life and a Sunday ritual for many farmers and residents. Also proving popular with visitors, in 2013 the Noosa Farmers’ Markets were awarded “#1 Markets in Australia” by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website. “The motivation for starting each of the markets that we operate here on the Coast (Noosa & Kawana Waters) and in North Queensland and soon Brisbane, was to make a difference to the livelihood of local farmers, and to create real local sustainability,” said Mr Stanley. “These weekly markets provide a direct-to-consumer selling opportunity for farmers, where farm-
More than 80 of Australia’s best winemakers and wine authorities will come together for a series of truly world-class wine experiences and master classes hosted by Aaron Brasher, Peter Forrestal, Ken Gargett, Tony Harper, Tony Love, Bernadette O’Shea, Peter Scudamore-Smith MW and Tyson Steltzer. Treasury Wine Estates General Manager, Angus McPherson said he is once again delighted to be the principle wine partner for the 2014 festival and thrilled that Seppelt, an iconic Victorian winery founded in 1851, will have a major presence at the event. As the Festival continues to grow and evolve, new exciting events such as the Champagne breakfast in the Qantas Beach Marquee is set to make this year’s event sparkle thanks to Taittinger. Cocktails are another hot item on the menu with the Suntory cocktail matching dinner and the Suntory cocktail competition on Noosa Main Beach with six of Australia’s hottest bartenders, both on Friday, May 16. What a weekend of rugby league and results! My tipping seems to be getting worse by the week. Very frustrating but that is why the results make our game so great.
The Broncos were shocked by the Electric Eels. The Bulldogs tore into the Roosters. The Sharks mauled the Warriors, hence the demise of Warriors coach Matt Elliott. The Tigers were too good in the wet for the Sea Eagles. The Rabbitohs back to form after crushing the Dragons. Who would have believed the Titans would upset the Storm in Melbourne and, with that result, top the competition ladder? I am a bit afraid to tip this week but I’ll give it a go. On Friday night the Panthers and Rabbitohs battle it out at Penrith and this should be a very good game. Both packs are big and strong while each set of backs are classy and very entertaining. Hard one this one but I will lean towards the Rabbits just because of Greg Inglis. Rabbitohs by 2. The other Friday night game will see the table-topping Titans grapple with the Broncos on the Gold Coast. This will be very testing for both sides and one the Broncos will want to win. Don’t underestimate the Titans but I’ll give the Broncos one more go.
Noosa Pirates in action against Caboolture on Saturday. PICTURE NICK WEBSTER.
Broncos in a close one by 4. On Super Saturday the Raiders host the Knights in what should be a very tough game. I like the Raiders and how they play but for some reason when they are bad they are bad. At home they can be very good and for that reason Raiders by 8. Also, on Saturday night the Eels take on the out-of-form Roosters and this should be very interesting. Most predicted the Eels for the wooden spoon but I am impressed with the way they play their footy. Parra are at home and have their tails up. Eels by 6. The final Saturday game will see the much-improved Tigers host-
GARY OGILVY
ing the out-of-sorts Cowboys. Love the Cowboys but they just aren’t playing well enough to upset the Tigers. Tigers by 10. On Sunday the Sea Eagles take on the rejuvenated Sharks. This will be at home and depending on what the outcome is on Cherry-Evans, then I just can’t go past the Sea Eagles. Could be an upset, but Sea Eagles by 10. The Warriors will be home against the Bulldogs and this one will be hard to predict. The Warriors will have a fill-in coach and are well aware of the bounce back factor. Conversely, the Bulldogs are playing quite well and will be hard and tough. Warriors are a
worry and if you tip against them, then they always seem to find a way to win. I’ll put that to the test. Bulldogs by 12. On Monday night the Storm are at home to the Dragons. Both lost last start and will be keen for the win. A bit of history between the clubs but I will back the Storm to right the ship and win comfortably. Storm by 8. Well, good tipping this week and as always, it you want to win the comp then go against my tips. Until next week... ‘Remember, Rugby League football, the greatest game of all.’

Noosa Tigers in action against Kedron at home on Saturday
Two from two for Tigers TIGER TALK JULIAN PITTS
Noosa Tigers made it two from two after a pretty convincing 23-point victory over Kedron at our Weyba Rd headquarters last Saturday.
In front of a very solid pro-Tigers crowd, with a President’s lunch and sponsors day coinciding, the local boys were quick to make a scoreboard impact and use the talents of Welch and Angel Duke up forward. Tommy McKittrick, Nath Winter and again young Jai Fitzpatrick were prevalent during the opening
stanza and entire first half. And whilst the Tigers took a 39-point buffer into the main break, conversion in front of goal seemed to be the major problem. New recruits Dillion Dempsey, Tom Keehan and Nickolas Sutton were stamping their mark on the game once again. After the main break, the Tigers were looking to bang home their almost 7-goal advantage and as basic skill errors became more and more prevalent from both sides, the Tigers still always looked to have the game in hand. The contrast in game styles was very obvious with Noosa going wide, chipping the ball around with patience before penetrating forward while Kedron were happier running the footy up through the middle, attempting to hit their tall attackers from that an-
gle. Again Sutton and Fitzpatrick were noticeable for the Tigers with champion utility Brett ‘Angel’ Duke’s forward line work rate a feature. The last quarter became a bit of a slog for the Tigers as Kedron were able to kick easy goals to reduce the final winning margin back to 23 points. And while I’m sure the way we finished may be a concern for new coach James Gellie, two out of two - especially with a side featuring 11 new players and playing in toaster-like temperatures - is a pretty good start and it was well and truly appreciated by the large pro-Noosa crowd - in particular the very happy and boisterous sponsors’ tent! Standout players for me were Sutton, Fitzpatrick, again show-
casing his terrific evasive skills on a wing, Duke, with 3 goals up forward, Dempsey and Keehan, for consistent four quarter efforts, and, of course, Welch, who whilst struggling with conversion really the set the tone with his aerial presenting in the first half. This Saturday it’s down the Bruce Highway to face Caboolture at their new impressive AFL headquarters so let’s keep getting behind the Noosa boys as they attempt to go three from three before the Easter break. A special mention to guest speaker Steve Haddan, who had the crowd in raptures at our first President’s lunch for 2014, and also to Bruce Davidson, who took home the $1000 cash as our major raffle winner. A great day had by all.

Ladies pairs winners Carole Studley and Jan Burkitt
Lining up against swimmers representing 23 clubs, Noosa remain undefeated for 2014, ending up again as the club with the highest aggregate points. Outstanding performances by two of our relay teams, and Eulah Varty, who collectively broke three state and Clinton Stanley and Jana Clancy accepting the trophy for the highest aggregate point score two national records.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB There was a bumper crowd of members and friends at the Heads on Sunday to watch three club championship finals being played. First to be decided was the Men’s C-Singles which, after a close contest, saw Nick Gelavis claim the match over Fabio Cantori, 25 shots to 20. Next came the ladies pairs final with Jan Burkitt and Carole Studley scoring from Judith Boakes and Et Kellett. In the men’s pairs final last year’s champs defended their title when Shane Burke and Ross Ward beat Ray McComb and Les James.

TEWANTIN BOWLS CLUB The Super Challenge Silver men’s play-offs were held at Tewantin on Saturday. Bribie Island def Club Kawana and proved too strong for our men in the final. Although losing 0-101 to 5-132 our team put up a strong effort to contain their opponents in the early stages of the match. Alan Shaw, as usual played well in the singles going down 25-32, while Ken Jaekel and Phil McCanna only lost 16-20. The triples of Bob Schofield, David Hawksford, Scott Roney could have gone either way with a 23-25 loss.
Les Armstrong
COOROY BOWLS CLUB Eumundi Boys hold the lead by 1 point in the High Rollers competition. JACS are second with Col and Co and JeLS coming in third. Horrors and BAM both had good wins. With only 10 points separating the top team with the last placed teams and half way through the completion, the results could change dramatically. Sunday morning saw a very tight game between seasoned players R Butler and B Hyatt and “new kids on the block” T Charles and R Alford in the Men’s Championship Pairs. Experience won the day with a 3 point win overall taking the winners through to the semi-finals.

Pirate juniors kick off the holidays Young U7 White started the Easter break with a great game of footy against Nambour. Well done Sam, Lukas, Bailey, Rhy, Lincoln, Lachlan and Joe. U7 Blue faced Nambour showing huge improvement. Player of the Match was Cooper Payne for his eager tackling and hard running. Ash Anderson made a try saving tackle and Nathan Jones made some great metres up the middle. U7 Yellow gave an outstanding team performance with every player giving their best. Angus Cook earned Player of the Match, Brandon Dwyer had some outstanding runs, Ty Malone gave 110% in attack and defence. U10 Blue pleased the coach this week. Ethan was awarded Player of the Match and Ollie the Encouragement Award. U10 White: Kallen showed incredible dummy half work, helping the boys to keep pushing forward at every opportunity. Antonio’s first game for Noosa saw him take off for the line with a couple of full length field runs. Digger was Player of the Match today with Kallen receiving the Encouragement Award. U11 Gold played a well drilled Kawana team. A mag-
ic ball from Liam Langton to the best centre in the game, Jackson Beaumont, who sent it onto Taj Johnstone to put down in the corner, should have been a try, but was controversially denied. Liam Trevanion was outstanding at the back, and Hayden Farrell worked hard in defence. Lachy Flett was strong in the utility role. Kawana came away with a 22-10 win. Player of the Match was Javier Iriondo and the Hungry Dog award went to Liam McVeagh. U12 Blue went down to Nambour but the game was played in great spirits with the boys putting in their best efforts. Noosa U13B played Kawana with a gutsy 40-30 win. Player of the Match went to Liam O’Hanlon, Corey MacKenzie and Chase McChesney. Special mention to Owain Ritson who helped set up 4 tries. Noosa 14As took on Gympie and came away with the win, Players of the Match going to Cecil and Zane. U14B finally had a home game, taking on Kawana for the third time this year. Kawana ran out winners at 26-4 but it was a great effort, boys. Just keep believing in yourselves. The Encouragement Award went to Sean with Lachy P getting Player of the Match.
Pirates snatch a draw Noosa Pirates A Grade may have gone down to the opposition but the U18s continue to impress coach Dean McMaster, managing to snatch an on-the-siren draw with powerhouse Caboolture 20-all.
A small squad travelled to Caboolture and with no reserves each player gave 100 per cent. Forwards Kyle Scheef and James Moorhead laid the platform with strong hit ups and defensive efforts, while smaller halves James Harrison and Hayden Trask were able to make good yards up the middle of the ruck, turning the big Caboolture pack inside out. Sammy Friend had a great day with the boot finding plenty of field position and using deft little kicks in behind the play catching the opposition wingers and fullback out of position. Loius Foote was again impressive at lock - not the biggest forward in the game but one with a big heart. He also made impressive yards with intelligent behindthe-ruck darts. The outside backs were solid and Jesse Jordan was reliable and safe at full back. With three minutes to go the boys were down 20-12 and then two quick tries, the last one being scored of a kick and chase on the siren, brought the scores level. The lads now have a two week break before their first real competition game on Anzac Eve against Maroochydore.

NOOSA TODAY
There was lots of colour, flags, mascots and fun on Saturday as Noosa Netball Association held its annual March Past. The march marks the beginning of the outdoor junior winter competition.
Players from 35 teams enthusiastically took part and the very junior ‘Net Set Go’ contingent led the parade around the courts. Teams created their own

Netball? Set, go! banners or added some extra ‘bling’ to their already colourful uniforms in the hope of impressing the judges. Lola McDonald (Association Patroness), Sylvia Covey and Fran Sadlier had the task of deciding a winner in each division. St Thomas More Shooting Stars, Good Shepherd Magic, Cooroora Sparks, Tewantin Thunder, Eumundi Euawsome, Noosaville Diamonds and Tewantin Tributes took out the awards.
Noosa, Sunshine lifesavers have the golden touch BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE
The Australian Titles are over for another year and I’m happy to relate that two of our local clubs - Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads - came away with medals and some outstanding individual performances.
For Sunshine medals were won in the Champion Patrol and Champion Life Saver categories. When you take into consideration that these two
events are what lifesaving is all about it is good to see Sunshine doing so well. Also in the U15 board rescue Sunshine came home with gold when Zac Barwicki and Tom Emenual combined to make the perfect team. Their junior surf swim teams also performed well. A club official said, “Considering that we only sent a team of 14 competitors it has, overall, been a great effort.” To have members specializing in these categories says a lot for their clubs for as we have said before, these non-glamour events are the backbone of what lifesavers do dayto-day on our beaches. A lot of Noosa’s best results were
in the craft section where they won medals, and in ironman events, where for the first time ever, Noosa had a competitor in both the men’s and women’s finals, McKenzie Hynard and Jordan Mercer. However, both finished outside the medals. For Jordan, who finished in eighth place, this placing automatically puts her into next season’s Nutri Grain Iron Man events without having to contest the elimination series. Again, in another first, Noosa won a gold medal in beach events when Rohani Bakhach took out the U19 Women’s Beach Flags. For many years, when Noosa was just a small club struggling for existence, beach teams were all they had but the gold

medals at the top were always elusive. Well, she has done it again! Lenore Grice, Life Member of Noosa and First Aid Coach extraordinaire, has walked away from the Australian Titles with yet another two gold medals to her credit. Lenore, who at present coaches the Maroochydore teams, has won 30plus medals at both State and National level. She is without a doubt the most successful first aid coach in the history of Australian first aid competition and also one of the most successful in any discipline in lifesaving history. “I get a buzz out of what I do but most important of all I love training the kids and see them do well,” she said. With visitors to our beaches and
mobile patrols to isolated areas on the increase, the importance of the teaching of people like Lenore cannot be emphasized enough. Unfortunately, because first aid is not considered a glamour event, it does not get the recognition that it justly deserves. Once the patrol season is finished and the lifeguards take over for the winter months, our IRB teams will commence their competition season. At present the Noosa club has 20 members in training, of which over half are girls. Team organiser David James said, “The winter months give us a different type of surf and the experience at open beaches is invaluable in improving the skills needed for the patrol season.”
