ALL SIX councils from across the Western Suburbs have united in a desperate bid to try to stop the region from losing more jobs. Melbourne’s West Economic Response Taskforce was recently formed and met for the first time earlier this month with representatives from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attending. CEO of western suburbs advocacy group LeadWest, Craig Rowley, said the Taskforce was formed as a reaction to the end of motor vehicle manufacturing in the West. He said that following Ford’s closure announcement in 2013, the Federal and State Government’s established funding to be applied over three years in recognition of the economic and social of the economic and social impact of the closure on

communities in Geelong and Melbourne’s North. “Taskforce representatives from LeadWest and the local governments of Melbourne’s West unanimously agreed that fair and equitable treatment is a must,” Mr Rowley said. “The Taskforce will formally request that the Australian and Victorian Government deliver a significant and comprehensive adjustment package to be applied in Melbourne’s West. “This would be on par with how Geelong and Melbourne’s North were helped.” Mr Rowley said the Taskforce would also try to help people who had lost their jobs to find new employment opportunities. “The Taskforce will help facilitate a successful transition from jobs exited at Toyota, Ford and Holden into other jobs and sectors,” he said.

Cover captured By YASEMIN TALAT A HILLSIDE resident’s photography has been selected to appear on the cover of the Western Yellow Pages book as part of the Capture the Cover competition. The competition, which runs annually, asks residents to capture photos within the community and submit it under the theme “Only Locals Know”. Russell Charters, who enjoys photography as a hobby, submitted a photo of the Rosenthal Winery ruins in Sunbury. His image was selected as a runner up and will now appear

on the cover of the Western Yellow Pages book alongside seven other photos taken in the local area. Mr Charters said he originally took the photo for his own personal collection. “It’s derelict so I thought I’ll take a photo of it because it might not be there soon, it might be pulled down with the way development’s going,” he said. Mr Charters said he was honoured to have his work recognised and chosen to represent the local community on the front page.

Mr Charters, who was first given a Box Brownie Camera when he was eight, has enjoyed taking photos of landscapes and sports ever since. “Photography is an artistic expression but it’s also your view or your memory of the scene,” he said. The new Western Yellow Pages book is one of 12 customised editions of the new look Melbourne Yellow Pages that will feature photos captured by locals on its covers. THE MELTON Men’s Shed has lent a helping hand to assist the students at Sydenham Hillside Primary School complete their garden. Students at the school have been planting and growing fruit and vegetables in the garden as part of the school’s garden program. But as their fruit and veggies grew, birds flocked to eat the produce before the students could. Integration Aide and member of the school’s Environment Committee Cheryl Kerr approached the Men’s Shed to help with the problem by building a scarecrow. So the “sheddies”, as the students refer to them, Gill Ellis, Allan Benson, Max Chester, and Tony Homburg created and donated Max the scarecrow to the school. The scarecrow was delivered to the school last week with the final touches of clothes and character added by teachers to finish it off. “The students were so excited, the smiles on their faces were priceless,” Ms Kerr said. Ms Kerr said the students were dedicated and proud of their garden and were devastated when vandals destroyed it and stole most of its contents including plants, a bridge and a statue last school holidays. Botanic gardens burgled POLICE from the Melton Burglary Unit are appealing for information following a burglary at the Melton Botanic Gardens last month. It is believed offenders broke into three sheds on William Street just before 5am on 25 March. Two men allegedly stole a large amount of property including a distinctive red 70-year-old con-

crete mixer, two lawn mowers, six weedicide packs and two hoses. Investigators have released an image of the stolen concrete mixer and images of two men that may assist with their investigation. Police are also investigating another burglary that occurred at the gardens sometime overnight on 6 April.

One shed was broken into and a watering system, pavers and hoses were stolen. At this stage it is not known if the burglaries are linked. Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the burglary is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log into www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Dog death trauma By XAVIER SMERDON THE OWNER of two dogs stolen from her backyard and thrown from a speeding car has said her three children have been traumatised by the event. Melissa Orr told Star that one of the dogs that was killed, a Maltese shih tzu, had been a beloved family pet for around 11 years. “My youngest children are 11 and six-years-old, so they’ve never known life without their dog,” Ms Orr said.

“It’s been around for such a long time that it’s just really sad that something like this would happen.” “The kids are absolutely traumatised. The youngest one cries herself to sleep because she’s got so many memories with the dogs.” The other dog was a staffy that had been living with the family for around one year. Ms Orr said it appeared that her rear fence had been marked with a piece of chalk so that the callous thieves would know that the Werribee property had dogs that could be stolen

and later used in a dog fighting ring. The dogs were found on Heaths Rd by a witness. Ms Orr said she had been informed that the dogs were most likely baited out of the property and then given a sedative. “They obviously overdosed them and then when they got them into the car they realised they didn’t have a heartbeat. That’s when they threw them out the window to get rid of them,” she said. “I think that’s the hardest bit, hearing the end of the story and the

But in twist of community caring, Ms Orr said she had been touched by unknown people making donations so that the family could have their pets cremated. Around $700 had been donated through a local Facebook page. “The support we’ve got from people has been overwhelming,” Ms Orr said. “People are amazing.”

POLICE are appealing for assistance after a postal van was stolen and used in a number of thefts throughout Melbourne’s north-west region. The Mitsubishi express van was stolen from Winchester Street in Moonee Ponds around 10.30am on 31 December last year. Investigators believe the same van, registration YSQ 483 has since been involved in a number of thefts that occurred between 28 January and 3 April. The van has been linked to the theft of trailer at Kerferd Street, Essendon on 28 January, a burglary at Ormond Rd, Ascot Vale on 30 January and a theft from a Taylors Lakes store on Melton Highway on 31 January. It is also believed to be linked to a theft from motor vehicle in Footscray West on 12 February then a theft from Coburg store on Gaffney Street the day after. On 14 February it was allegedly used in a theft of a trailer and a Honda motorbike with registration CB750 from Addison Street in Ascot Vale and theft of a caravan at Heather Court in Melton on 3 April. The male offender is perceived to be of Middle Eastern or Indian appearance, aged in his late 20s to mid 30s, 170-175cm tall with a medium build. He was wearing a black cap, an orange fluro jumper with blue sleeves, black pants, runners and blue and black gloves. Investigators from the Moonee Valley Vehicle Crime Reduction Team have released images of a man and stolen property that may assist with their inquiries. By XAVIER SMERDON WESTERN Suburbs residents are being urged to slow down on the roads this Easter long weekend. Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, said that the public holiday would bring extra challenges for road users. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road,” Mr Giddings said. “If you plan on having a drink then plan not to drive. Taking a big risk like drink

driving is just not worth endangering your life or other road users.” Mr Giddings said while the holiday period and the arrival of wet weather would create more risks, speeding drivers were still the number one danger on Victoria’s roads. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings said it was up

to the community to make a stand against dangerous driving. “Engaging a changing community will assist in the community taking on the responsibility of understanding the effects and consequences of speeding and rivers that speed,” he said. “The community being involved through awareness of issues in their local area will encourage community policing and reporting so that compliance with speed limits improves.” Anyone that witnesses dangerous driving should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sport Jets win in fly-by By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Jets’ round four clash with the Northern Territory was a non-event at Cragieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday. In what was the Territory’s first competitive hit-out ahead of the national under-18 carnival later this year, the winless Jets scored their first win of their 2014 campaign in cruise control, finishing up 122-point victors. The result was sealed after just one quarter of footy, with the Jets storming out of the block with five unanswered goals in the opening term. By half-time the margin had already blown out to 44 points and in the third term it only got worse for the visiting Thunder, with the Jets piling on another 10 unanswered goals to break away to a three-figure lead before the three-quarter time siren. In the end the Jets kicked 23 goals for the game to the Territory’s three in what could prove an important percentage-booster come season’s end.

way the guys played. “We dominated the clearances and I think we had a little bit of extra height than they had, so we had some match-ups that were well in our favour and we were able to expose that.” Tylar Vujanic backed up his good showing against Oakleigh last week with a five-goal haul on Sunday, while Mitch Norton and Brenton Payne got three. Payne’s marking presence inside forward 50 was a feature of the otherwise featureless game.
