THEY are stars in their own right, and Grade 6 students in Emerald now have it on their backs to prove it. The students have opted to include local plant, the Emerald Star Bush, on their jumper designs, a move that has pleased local environmental groups. Emerald for Sustainability (EmfSus) coordinator Lee Fuller said she was excited to see the students had put the threatened local flora on their jumpers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;2013 was the Year of the Emerald Star Bush, and it was as a result of an ongoing community partnered project to raise the profile of this threatened local flora,â&#x20AC;? Ms Fuller said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We spoke with Emerald Primary School last year, in the hope that the whole school would adopt this logo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, the whole school hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, as yet, but the Grade 6s have.â&#x20AC;? Principal Mark Carver said the students had a chance to choose what they wanted on their jumpers, and took on the Emerald Star Bush. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a clear focus on environmental issues,â&#x20AC;? Mr Carver said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So it is wonderful to see the kids get on board.â&#x20AC;?

Recreation Reserve and other areas in town. The Cardinia Shire Council previously prepared a draft spatial plan for feedback on the future allocation of community facilities in Emerald. The exhibition of the previous paper for community consultation in mid2012 attracted 59 submissions from residents, and the information from the feedback was provided to council. The revised draft plan summarises the outcome of the feedback and council discussion.

Kids’ home is a sandcastle By MELISSA MEEHAN THANKS to the generosity of local families, Sarah Court Preschool in Montrose has achieved the trifecta for learning and fun. That being sand, rocks and water. After a year-long fund-raising campaign and two weeks of hard work over the summer break, Sarah Court Preschool’s dream of a natural sand play area is now a reality. The preschool used mudstone boulders and a hand-operated water pump to create a space where children are inspired to explore and experiment with the natural environment. According to four-year-old kinder teacher Kym Smyth, the new space has

already transformed the learning for many of her students. “The children can’t get enough of the new sand play area,” Ms Smyth said. “They are developing balance skills when climbing over the boulders, they experiment mixing water with sand, and they are learning about sustainable water management. “Students now regularly check the level in our water tank and we are discussing ways to regulate water usage until the next rain replenishes our Sarah Court Preschool’s back-to-nature backyard blitz has been a huge success and is part of a strategic plan to create an environment that inspires learning through the natural environment.” Kate Garnsworthy, president of Sarah

Court Preschool’s Parent Committee, said the preschool’s philosophy focused on helping children develop a connection with their world and the new sand play area would be central to this. “We are so grateful for the generosity of families and the Montrose Community Bank for their support,” she said. “With the help of our community, we are creating a vibrant and inspiring place for our children to become confident and involved learners.” Community members interested in viewing Sarah Court Preschool’s new sand play area are invited to visit its open day on Saturday 17 May. Littlies are beast-ly By REBECCA BILLS GRADE 1 and 2 students at Mount Evelyn Christian School turned into mini beasts to celebrate all they have learned over the past term. Dragonflies, ladybugs, centipedes and all sorts of other creepy-crawly costumes filled the junior primary school last Wednesday as the students shared the knowledge they had learnt. Junior primary class teacher Rebecca Yeates said the students had studied different mini beasts that lived in the environment.

Ms Yeates said a strong focus has been on the little creature’s purposes in the environment and the students’ own responsibility to care for the critters. “Children are naturally curious and excited about mini beasts and this curiosity can be harnessed so that their knowledge, understanding and appreciation for mini beasts and their environment may be extended and deepened,” she said. “We aim to do this in a learning environment that is safe and fosters a healthy respect for these most intricate, wonderful, and sometimes dangerous creatures.

“We learn that mini beasts are living things that can grow, change and reproduce.” Ms Yeates said over the term the students had gotten their hands dirty searching for mini beasts in the school’s gardens to understand where they lived and what they needed to survive. “Our mini beasts dressup day provides an opportunity for students to celebrate what they have learnt with their classmates, teachers and parents,” she said. “It’s a memorable day for all.”

STREETSCAPING works will give Tecoma new life, according to traders. And councillors and council staff seem to agree after walking around the town with community members last month. Mayor Fiona McAllister said last week that while more community consultation was needed, council staff picked up a number of ideas for the revamp. She said ideas around community led projects would be followed up and the council would investigate what grants might be available to the community. “We’ve got money in the budget for the next financial year for the streetscaping work,” Cr McAllister said.“And the walk enabled traders to discuss a range of issues from traffic safety to running community markets. “It will hopefully lead to really good things coming into the community.”

CARDINIA Shire Councillor Collin Ross will contest the seat of Gembrook in the upcoming State Election. Cr Ross was endorsed as the ALP candidate for the seat currently held by Liberal up and comer Brad Battin ahead of the November polls. “As a parent with a mortgage and a smallbusiness owner, I understand how difficult it can be sometimes to keep on top of the bills,” he said. “Throughout my time as a Cardinia Shire councillor, I have spoken up for thousands of local families struggling with increased living pressures. “I believe the best way I can help them now is by supporting a government that will protect and create local jobs.” Councillors in neighbouring Casey have also been recently endorsed. Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett was selected as the Liberal candidate for Cranbourne, while Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon was chosen as the candidate for Narre Warren North after the pair were formally endorsed by the party’s Administrative Committee due to an insufficient number of eligible liberal delegates to hold a Liberal convention. Only people who have been local Liberal members for more than two years are eligible to vote. Both seats are currently held by Labor, with Jude Perera in Cranbourne and Luke Donnellan in Narre Warren North. “My door is always open to the people I represent and that won’t change,” Cr Stapledon said. “I am confident that I can continue to represent the people of Casey.” Cr Ross said he would continue to serve the people of Cardinia on council. “I believe the experience gained from being a councillor will give me the local knowledge to best connect with voters,” he said. “As an example, Ken Smith and Russell Broadbent both spent six years as councillors before being elected to state and federal parliament.” Mr Battin was elected in November 2010, taking the seat from Labor’s Tammy Lobato.

USING taxis as a ‘quasi bus service’ was one suggestion to beat the Yarra Ranges’ transport woes at a regional transport forum last week. It took O’Shannassy Ward councillor Jim Child two hours to drive to the Eastern Transport Coalition’s (ETC) Commuters Count Transport Summit at Springvale Reserve on 9 April. “It would have taken three to four hours on public transport,” he said. “So I’ve blown the whole day coming here.” Cr Child said the region’s bus

services were inadequate. “We’ve got to be able to entice people out of their cars,” he said. RACV roads and traffic manager Dave Jones suggested regional councils could work with taxi companies to run a set route at a set price each day, a ’quasi bus service’. RACV public policy general manager Brian Negus said buses were the forgotten transport mode and needed more attention. Urban planner Professor Roz Hansen agreed, and suggested offering bus services in three levels - local, rail link and longer journeys -

TO SOME it’s just junk, but one man’s trash is another’s treasure. Students at Belgrave South Christian School let their creative side take hold as they made musical instruments, jewellery, sculptures, T-shirts and animations from what would usually

be thrown away as rubbish. Some even wrote songs or poetry about the items, while others got behind the lens as they made it part of creative photographs. “The All About Art Festival is a celebration of creativity,

environmental awareness and fun,” art teacher and event organiser Angela Reiher said.“The students and staff were also encouraged to dress up in UP-cycled costumes and some of them were spectacular. “It was a great day.”

Cash to put crunch on crime GRANTS of up to $10,000 are now available to the residents of the Yarra Ranges. The grants are a part of the Coalition Government’s $35 million Community Crime Prevention Program. State Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue said he supported the program and encouraged locals to identify any issues affecting safety . He said they could then submit ideas for safety projects that

will help to prevent crime in their community. “The grants are open to councils, community and sporting groups and local schools to implement practical community safety projects,” Mr O’Donohue said. “This includes installing security lighting, padlocks, and security screens, fencing, or undertaking awareness activities to deter crime and increase community safety.

“These grants make a real difference and I strongly encourage community groups and councils across the state to apply for grants of up to $10,000.” He said the program had so far provided funding for 10 projects across the Yarra Ranges totalling $78,784. Boxed up birds By MELISSA MEEHAN IT’S only a box made of donated wood - but it could ensure the survival of birds in the Dandenong Ranges. In wet conditions last week, nest boxes were placed in the tree tops for local birds including the powerful owl and kookaburras. Driven by Monbulk Landcare’s Sue Wansbrough, the boxes are put together by local schools with donated goods from local business.

“Without these boxes, birds that don’t nest like the yellow tail or a kookaburra, have nowhere to breed,” she said. “After Birdsland burnt last year, and people are removing old trees, there are less places for these birds to go.” Working with Monbulk College, Bayswater Secondary College, Bunnings Bayswater, Leaps and Bounds and Ranges TEC, which built the boxes, Ms Wansbrough had been relying on volunteers to climb up ladders to place the boxes.

Yarra Ranges Council staff also helped identify which trees were the best places to have the boxes, as well as helping out on the day they were put up. But this year, she enlisted the help of energy provider SP AusNet which volunteered its staff and trucks at no cost to help out with the placement. “It’s been so great that they have their help,” she said. “We’ve been able to place the boxes on trees that are hard to reach.”

THE Friends of Sherbrooke Forest wish to protest at the removal of mature eucalypt trees along the Puffing Billy corridor. Together with the Friends of Trestle Bridge, our group has been working to restore the historic gardens and natural environment of Yanakie (now part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park), by removing environmental weeds which have been allowed to take over the property. Weedy trees such as sycamore maple and Portuguese laurel have for years shaded out the indigenous species, preventing natural regeneration. The removal of mature eucalypt trees by the management of Puffing Billy is further eroding the biodiversity of this corridor. THIS week in the Herald Sun, James Currie claimed that Tecoma is not “the sleepy little hollow” it is made out to be by highlighting examples of other food stores nearby. What he does not highlight is the fact that none of these other stores come anywhere near the scale of the recently opened McDonald’s outlet. They do not have a drive-through and they are not permitted to stay open for 24 hours, unlike their new neighbour. Most of these stores, even on Friday and Saturday night, are closed before 10pm. I will accept his assurance that the “Yarra Ranges way of life” will not be disrupted by his outlet if he can guarantee garbage from it does not end up in nearby forests and parklands. And before supporters retort that the franchisee is not directly accountable for the rubbish generated by his store, it does not change the fact that rubbish from the outlet will manifest in the surrounding area. Although until last week the closest outlet was in Ferntree Gully, discarded McDonald’s packaging is already frequently seen throughout the Dandenongs. The sight of such rubbish diminishes the experience of those who choose to take a day trip into the hills to escape the city as well as bothering local residents. I call that, especially with the 24 hour availability of McDonald’s products in the area, a disruption. Apart from the environmental concerns, I count myself among the opponents of this establishment as those who primarily focus upon the unsuitability of the McDonald’s outlet for an area already plagued by poor traffic flow, particularly in peak periods. While I cannot deny the benefit of employment for young local people, I do ask can that one benefit outweigh the negatives posed by this much discussed outlet. Troy Clinton, Belgrave.

AS one of the Tecoma 8, sued by McDonald’s last year for trespass, I have been growing weary of people who are in support of McDonald’s, Tecoma, misunderstanding why I chose to occupy the roof in protest against the development. I receive comments such as “you lost, it hasn’t changed anything, move on!” or “everything you did was for nothing”. I believe it is very naive to think that this campaign hasn’t changed anything and more so that what I chose to do was solely about Tecoma and the Dandenong Ranges. I often wonder why so many people think this is just about Tecoma, that we were just fighting for this issue in isolation. Of course Tecoma is the root of this protest but this campaign that I am a part of is just a fragment of a much larger movement that is growing - the recognition and exposing of corporate power, greed and its effect on our planet. Tecoma has helped spread this globally in a significant way - the campaign has showed many people exactly how the system works. I think that our actions have caused people to have more awareness of these issues surrounding the system and the power of money. The community might have had a chance to take this to the Supreme Court to order McDonald’s to leave but, due to the massive expense, we were unable. However, McDonald’s was able to take that avenue when they didn’t like their outcome - we live in a system that favours the rich. This campaign put that in the spotlight, that something is terribly wrong. If you have money and power, you can get away with erroneous behaviour without consequence.

AT LEAST a dozen bored cops line the front of McDonald’s, paired with a dozen or so slightly more animated red-shirted protesters. It is day one, Monday night nearing 7pm, at tiny hills town Tecoma - Ground Zero in the frontline of a multi-national culture clash. Welcome to Australia’s newest McDonald’s, where the drivethrough is so busy that they have a bloke directing traffic. But, as always, readers, the real story is inside. So hated and loathed is this fast food giant that it is standing room only. The free wi-fi seems to have collapsed under the pressure. There’s scarcely a seat to be had. The dozen staff behind the counter are run off their feet in a blur of fries, shakes, soft drinks and, most of all, burgers. Ticket number 105 is being served. I’m ticket number 166. I get the sense this might take a little while. I’m no stranger to the Golden Arches, but I’ve never waited half an hour for a Macca’s meal in my life. That’s what’s about to happen - in a carnival atmosphere. Inside, the clientele is young, old, kids, teenagers, married, single, middle-aged, professionals, tradies - a microcosm of Tecoma. “I was going to come down today and throw chicken nuggets at the hippies,” the teen next to me in the queue ponders to his mates. Meals secured, my colleague and I find a table without chairs in the corner, with some delightful locals.

Mobility for Oscar the Brave By REBECCA BILLS HE is a brave little man with a zest for life. However, eight-year-old Oscar Groves-Berry, dubbed Oscar the Brave, was diagnosed with the incurable Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) the day before his seventh birthday. The disease is the most aggressive form of Muscular Dystrophy causing muscles to break down, leading to progressive difficulty with walking and general mobility that will lead to complete muscle failure including his heart and lungs. With his ninth birthday coming up on 24 April, the family has had to make a considerable number of changes including renovating their bathroom and re-doing their drive-way since the diagnosis. Parents Vicki and Andrew said it was not easy, but they just did what they had to do as soon he was permanently bound to a wheelchair. “When we were initially told of his condition, it was absolutely gut

wrenching - it was awful,” Mrs GrovesBerry said. “We’ve answered all his questions as he asks them as honestly as possible,” he said. “Unfortunately, his appearance has changed so much because of the medication, some of his friends have asked questions.” The disease affects one in 3500 boys, is genetic and has no cure. The family is now in desperate need of a suitable vehicle with hydraulics to accommodate an electric wheelchair - this will play an essential part in enabling Oscar to attend medical appointments, the Children’s Hospital, weekly therapy, school and outings. Wantirna Lions Club has got on board to support Oscar and his family and is currently seeking 300 generous people or organisations to donate $100 each to help fund the purchase of the vehicle. Wantirna Lions Club Member Paul Garvey said the club was about serving and supporting the local community. “This is a worthwhile cause that we

felt we could get behind and possibly take a leading role for other service clubs, groups, businesses and individuals to work with us to support Oscar and his family,” he said. “As we have gotten to know Oscar and his family, we appreciate how important this cause is and we understand how important getting this vehicle for them is. “The family is really delightful, but really the underlying message here is we can make a difference together.” Mr Groves-Berry said the support from not only the club but the whole local community has been unbelievable. “It makes us feel very humble knowing that there are people out there that are willing to help us,” she said. “It’s been hard on us all as a family, including our 11-year-old daughter Madison. “We are normally the ones helping other people - we are very grateful as it makes our life just the little bit easier having that assistance.” Tax deductable donations may be

The Mount Evelyn Chamber of Commerce together with the Mount Evelyn Community Bank Branch are hosting the annual Golf Day to bring the community together for fun, laughs and hopefully a good round of golf. The vision of the chamber is to assist with the growth of business and services in the town by supporting and promoting local businesses to become successful. Chamber member and Mount Evelyn Post Office owner Gary Freeman said the event was just one of the many initiatives the chamber took to keep locals informed with what the group was doing and to ensure businesses in the town interact. “We try to make it as easy as possible for businesses and create events that allow new businesses to mix with the old ones,” he said. “It really is just a social day for these businesses - it’s not a money raising day at all.” The day will consist of a game of golf at the Yering Meadows Golf Club with players meeting at noon for a 12.30pm tee off on Friday 2 May followed by a dinner. “We always have a dinner after our golf game, so people who don’t play golf can still mix,” Mr Freeman said. Top ride By REBECCA BILLS THERE are not many 15-yearolds that would willingly leave home around 4am to begin a day of training. But for young cyclist and Lilydale High Student Kelland O’Brian it is just second nature. Continuing a winning spree at cycling track events around the state, O’Brian has his sights firmly set on the upcoming 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Last month, O’Brian won gold at the oldest bicycle track race, the 2014 Austral Wheel Race which took him to the Junior State Criterium Championships where he placed fourth in the Junior Male under 17s. “Dad got me into cycling at the start and then I’ve just moved my way through each different style of racing,” O’Brian said.

O’Brian said racing at the Austral Wheel Race was amazing and it was great to race in front of a big Melbourne crowd. “A lot of really famous riders were riding there as well, and it was really awesome getting to race on the track and watch riders who have been in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games do there thing,” he said. With the summer season of track riding coming to an end, O’Brian is now gearing up for the winter season of road riding. O’Brian’s mother Sandy O’Brian said he had adapted well to the rigours of balancing training and schooling. “The school has been really supportive,” she said. “He misses a little bit of school as he travels to Spotswood twice a week. “Kel leaves home between 4am and 4.30am on those days

to train with the Malaysian Cycling team’s strength coach Martin Girvan which means he doesn’t arrive at school until 9.30am on a good day, but he is doing very well.” Ms O’Brian said to have watched her son achieve all he had within an 18-month period has been phenomenal. “He loves it, he is really committed and I’m really proud of the way he encourages younger riders,” she said. “He has a bit of an interesting road to get to the Commonwealth Games as that is not really a direct route, but he is certainly looking towards being a national representative at some point - there is still a long road ahead of him. “The whole family is on board and he certainly has the potential to getting there, its just a matter of him continuing to love it along the way.”

YARRA Ranges Athletics held round two of the cross country season on Saturday morning at Lillydale Lake. A large enthusiastic group of athletes enjoyed a run around a new course through the lake parklands. Monbulk goes down fighting AS floodlights pierced the dark backdrop of night, Monbulk Rangers Soccer Club prepared to face off against Cairnlea FC on Friday 4 April in the Women’s Premier League. The Reserve girls got the evening underway with a very solid performance, making up for some defensive lapses with a clinical display in front of goal, resulting in a comfortable 3-1 win courtesy of goals from Routhy Sok (1) and Mia Kirkham (2). After a disappointing display the previous week, Monbulk women’s senior team were out to make amends. Captain Alicia McKillen set the tone early on in proceedings with a comprehensive display while

her team-mates made life very difficult for Cairnlea. Despite the intensity in the girls’ game, they trailed 1-0 at the break. The second half began in very much the same tone as the first. Monbulk fought hard but ultimately succumbed to the pressure, giving away a penalty kick which was subsequently tucked away. 2-0 to Cairnlea. Monbulk went on to score with a goal from Cheeney, though this proved little more than a consolation with 2-1 being the final score. Despite the loss, head coach Quenten Wells was happy with the intensity and pressure the girls applied all over the park. Next week, the girls play away

to the FFV U17s. The following day saw the season continue with the men’s reserves and senior teams in action. The Reserves kicked off proceedings with an impressive and hard-fought 3-3 draw. Monbulk seniors continued their winning streak, with a comprehensive and well-deserved 2-0 win over East Brighton. The game itself was a treat and proved to be a very good start for new coaches Stephen Weah and Henry Yallah.
