Council camera call By XAVIER SMERDON A WYNDHAM Councillor has broken ranks by calling for his colleagues to approve the installation of security cameras around crime hot spots throughout Wyndham. Cr Gautam Gupta said he decided to make a public call for more CCTV cameras and police resources after his house was broken into earlier this month. At around midnight on Saturday 5 April while celebrating his daughter’s birthday with family and friends, his wife heard a noise coming from another room in their house. It was discovered that an unknown man had broken into the house by jumping Cr Gupta’s back fence and entering through an unlocked door. He was not wearing any clothes at the time and performed a lewd act before fleeing the scene. Cr Gupta told Star the incident had traumatised his family and made them feel unsafe in their own home. “You never know how vulnerable a family can become until after an incident like this,” Cr Gupta said. “The older child is especially traumatised. All she knows is that there was a monster in the house.” Cr Gupta said after reporting the incident to police he was convinced that Wyndham needed more crime fighting assets. “I was really almost offended when I saw the computer systems that our police are forced to use,” he said. “How can we expect them to keep our City crime free when they have to use such old systems.” He said he had been informed that CCTV cameras could help reduce crime in the municipality. Wyndham Council has previously confirmed to Star that it had chosen not

Cr Gupta said he did not think this was an acceptable attitude. “There is no excuse to not install cameras. Money cannot be a criteria for safety,” he said. “My mission now is to convince my fellow councillors to install more security cameras around Wyndham. I will make sure this issue is revisited by

the council.” But Wyndham Council CEO Kerry Thompson said last week that if the council did install cameras she would expect that the State Government would contribute to the “significant” costs associated with their purchase, installation and the ongoing monitoring and maintenance. “There has been no request made to Wyndham City for CCTV in public places, however if a request was made, we would consider this in conjunction

with our safety policies, annual budget initiatives and with relevant parties including Victoria Police,” Ms Thompson said. But Wyndham’s top police officer Inspector Damien Christensen said a safety audit of the Werribee and Hoppers Crossing stations had not been done since April 2012, but that crime in Wyndham was on the way down. He also said that Wyndham was in line to receive 11 more police, including three sergeants, over the next 12

FAMILIES across the West are getting ready to enjoy Easter festivities this weekend with youngsters already counting down the days until everyone’s beloved bunny arrives and delivers tasty chocolate treats. And little Matilda is no exception. Like most toddlers she has enjoyed a sneaky treat or two this week and is looking forward to waking up on Sunday morning to a house filled with chocolate. 118398 Picture DAMJAN JANEVSKI

Service roads are now carparks

Deadlines for Issue Dated 29th April 2014 Display – General News

WHEN is a service road not a service road and what exactly is a service road? More and more I see service roads being used as car parks. I went to pull into a service road recently to stop and speak on my mobile, only to discover that there was no clear space, and I would have been blocking the entire road if I stopped. The cars in the service road were unattended, just parked there, for the day I suspect. This road is within walking distance to a train station. So what is the go? Should I be upset that I could not utilise the service road as a temporary stop to do what I had to do, or is it right that cars can park there for the whole day? Your thoughts are welcome. I had some interesting feedback regarding my piece on people leaving Wyndham from both points of view. One reader has moved back into Wyndham and is loving it, compared to Gisborne, which she found boring and too predictable. On the other hand the traffic, public transport, and the changing ethnic make up of the area, seems to be of a concern to some.

The

Hillier view KEVIN HILLIER The cost of housing has been a common theme and I have to admit the reason I moved here in the 80’s was because it was where I could buy a nice house at a realistic price. I can certainly relate to that mindset, even in this economy. Last Saturday morning I had a flashback to the good old days of the 80’s, when I left home at 7am and got a dream run to the city. The roads were clean, clear and a pleasure to be on. Unfortunately that is a rare treat which I did enjoy. THE Hoppers Crossing Football Club is playing a game on Good Friday against St. Albans at Hogans Road Reserve. You are asked for a gold coin donation to be part of the day which will raise funds for the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal. I know of several families who have close links to both the footy club and the hospital who will be involved in the day. One of the attractions of the day is the Good Friday Gift Sprint with runners from all clubs in the competition. EASTER is a break for many people but please take care on the roads. Taskforce for West jobs By XAVIER SMERDON ALL SIX councils from across the Western Suburbs have united in a desperate bid to try and stop the region from losing more jobs. Melbourne’s West Economic Response Taskforce was recently formed and met for the first time earlier this month with representatives from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attending. CEO of western suburbs advocacy group LeadWest, Craig Rowley, said the Taskforce was formed as a reaction to the end of motor vehicle manufacturing in the West.

He said that following Ford’s closure announcement in 2013, the Federal and State Government’s established funding to be applied over three years in recognition of the economic and social of the economic and social impact of the closure on communities in Geelong and Melbourne’s North. “Taskforce representatives from LeadWest and the local governments of Melbourne’s West unanimously agreed that fair and equitable treatment is a must,” Mr Rowley said. “The Taskforce will formally request that the Australian and Victorian Government deliver a

significant and comprehensive adjustment package to be applied in Melbourne’s West. “This would be on par with how Geelong and Melbourne’s North were helped.” Mr Rowley said the Taskforce would also try to help people that had lost their jobs to find new employment opportunities. “The Taskforce will help facilitate a successful transition from jobs exited at Toyota, Ford and Holden into other jobs and sectors,” he said. “It will also have an eye to the longer term and redouble efforts to grow and diversify the economy of

Melbourne’s West so there are improved job opportunities closer to where people live.” In February Toyota announced that it would stop making cars in Australia by 2017, with the loss of 2500 jobs. The announcement came after last year’s announcements that Ford will cease production in October 2016 and Holden would stop by 2017. It is expected that more than 50,000 jobs could be lost in the automotive manufacturing industry, with many of those jobs coming from Melbourne’s West.

Police rammed A WERRIBEE man has been charged by police for ramming an officer’s car and sending him to hospital earlier this year. Tristan Dengler allegedly rammed into a police vehicle in Hoppers Crossing on 24 February. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the incident occurred after Mr Dengler was followed for speeding. “Police observed the sedan travelling at high speed along Derrimut Rd and attempted to intercept the vehicle in Paloma Crt when the driver reversed into the police car,” the spokesperson said. “The 27-year-old Werribee man was arrested on 4 April and charged with conduct endangering life, evade police and other traffic offences. “He was also charged with other offences including armed robbery, burglary, theft of motor vehicle and theft from motor vehicle.” Mr Dengler appeared before the Magistrates’ court and was remanded in custody. He will reappear in court on 29 April.

be stolen and later used in a dog fighting ring. The dogs were found on Heaths Rd by a witness. Ms Orr said she had been informed that the dogs were most likely baited out of the property and then given a sedative. “They obviously overdosed them and then when they got them into the car they realised they didn’t have a heartbeat. That’s when they threw them out the window to get rid of them,” she said. “I think that’s the hardest bit, hearing the end of the story and the

fact that they were just thrown away like pieces of garbage.” The family was still waiting on the results of an autopsy last week. But in twist of community caring, Ms Orr said she had been touched by unknown people making donations so that the family could have their pets cremated. Around $700 had been donated through a local Facebook page. “The support we’ve got from people has been overwhelming,” Ms Orr said. “People are amazing.”

THE OWNER of two dogs stolen from her backyard and thrown from a speeding car has said her three children have been traumatised by the event. Melissa Orr told Star that one of the dogs that was killed, a Maltese shih tzu, had been a beloved family pet for around 11 years. “My youngest children are 11 and six-years-old, so they’ve never known life without their dog,” Ms Orr said.

“It’s been around for such a long time that it’s just really sad that something like this would happen.” “The kids are absolutely traumatised. The youngest one cries herself to sleep because she’s got so many memories with the dogs.” The other dog was a staffy that had been living with the family for around one year. Ms Orr said it appeared that her rear fence had been marked with a piece of chalk so that the callous thieves would know that the Werribee property had dogs that could

A POINT Cook budding photographer will have one of his images shown in thousands of houses throughout Melbourne. Terence McGlone was one of three photographers chosen to have his work featured on the cover of the South Western Yellow Pages book as part of their Capture the Cover competition. The photo, which was taken in Werribee South, captured the silhouette of a flock of birds against an orange sunset. Mr McGlone said he was honoured to have his photo chosen to represent his community and he could not wait until the book landed on his doorstep. “The colour when the sun drops over the bank is spectacular. I find the area peaceful and relaxing and wanted to capture my perfect summer night,” Mr McGlone said. Capture the Cover judge, professional photographer

Mark Lobo, said Mr McGlone’s image summed up the region perfectly. “The Only Locals Know theme was all about finding those things that make our communities unique. The things that remind you why you love where you live and what makes it special,” Mr Lobo said. “There were so many incredible submissions in the area, but

Terence’s stood out - he was able to capture the serenity of the region.” Mr McGlone’s photo will feature on the cover of the new book, which started being distributed on 8 March, and it will sit alongside seven other photos taken by local residents. To view a full gallery of the winning images visit www.capturethecover.com

Controlled burns WYNDHAM Council is joining forces with the Little River CFA to conduct controlled burns across the municipality. The autumn burns will begin this month and continue, weather permitting, until May 2014. Councillor Peter Gibbons said the controlled burns were necessary for grassland maintenance. “The reserves earmarked for these controlled burns consist of nationally threatened Victorian volcanic plains vegetation

and these burns will assist to maintain the health of plants and animals in these areas,” Cr Gibbons said. “Planned burns involve lighting fires under carefully managed conditions to reduce the impacts of damaging bushfires on communities, property and the natural environment. These burns are usually patchy, with parts of the area remaining unburnt. “The slow and patchy nature of the controlled burns reduces the risk to native animals and

the lower temperatures of the fires mean that some native plants are better able to tolerate the heat. “Residents and businesses that live and operate in these areas, should avoid the burn sites and if smoke hangs in the air, ensure windows are shut and turn the air conditioner off.” For more information on the controlled burns, visit www. wyndham.vic.gov.au or contact Wyndham Council on 8734 2711.

Coffee made from the heart By XAVIER SMERDON A POINT Cook business owner has been recognised as making one of the best cups of coffee in Australia and New Zealand. Sam Vazirani, the owner of Muffin Break Sanctuary Lakes, knocked out hundreds of other baristas to make it through to the grand final of the Foodco Barista Championships last week. Just eight coffee experts were chosen from throughout the Tasman to compete in the finals last Thursday, with Mr Vazirani just being pipped at the post. He eventually took out third place overall after he was beaten by a competitor from New Zealand. Mr Vazirani has only been making coffee for three years, including 18 months at his own store in Sanctuary Lakes. He said he was honoured to be able to test his skills on the national stage. “I always want to excel and make every single coffee the best it can be,” Mr Vazirani said. “A good coffee can really make someone’s day and I enjoy seeing the smile on a happy customer’s face. “I love making latte art and my favourite design is the heart because it shows that each coffee was made with love.” To test his skills in the grand final Mr Vazirani had 15 minutes to prepare 12 cups of coffee, being four espressos, four cappuccinos and four cups showing their best latte art, to serve to the judges. He said when he returned to his store he would use the experience to show his own baristas the new skills he had learned.

WINNING VALUE Firefighters rescued a man from this car crash. 118446

Man cut from car VOLUNTEERS from the Werribee Fire Brigade were forced to cut a man from a car following a serious crash earlier this month. First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said crews from Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham Vale attended the crash on the Maltby Bypass, near the Western Interchange, at around 8.15am on Friday 4 March. “Crews were confronted with a two vehicle accident in the Melbourne bound lane near the Farm Rd overpass, with a 24-year-old male trapped by the lower limbs in one vehicle,” First Lt Wells said. “The driver from that vehicle had self-extricated and was sitting injured on the side of the highway. The female

driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.” The firefighters started medical treatment on the injured male driver while they were waiting for paramedics to arrive and they also started to free the trapped passenger. “The vehicle with the entrapment was stabilised, to prevent movement, the left side was removed and the roof folded to the rear using hydraulic cutters and spreaders,” First Lt Wells said. “Paramedics arrived at this time and this procedure allowed them better access to treat the patient. The volunteer fire brigade rescue crew, using techniques they evolved whilst competing

in international rescue challenges, commenced the intricate procedure of removing the patient from the tangled wreckage of the car. “Using hydraulic spreaders and rams as well as a range of hand tools the patient was removed from the vehicle after some twenty minutes. The patient was then stabilised by paramedics on scene and transported to hospital.” Following the crash First Lt Wells urged all drivers to play it safe on Wyndham’s roads. “Werribee fire brigade is the busiest CFA volunteer rescue brigade in Victoria. This is a sad indictment to the road users of Wyndham and their driving habits,” he said.

Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge wins industry award ONE of Wyndham’s most iconic pieces of engineering has been recognised with an industry award. The Wedge Street Pedestrian Bridge has received the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) Victoria Award for Excellence 2014 in the Capital Works category. The bridge was chosen out of 14 projects including libraries, town halls and swimming pools. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough said the awards recognise excellence in the innova-

tion, development, construction and management of public works projects and services. “With 14 other candidates, we had some serious competition in this category, showing the outstanding nature of this project,” Cr Fairclough said. “The bridge provides a fantastic focal point for the Werribee City Centre and contributes to our vision to make Werribee the capital of the New West.” “Since it was opened to the public in early 2013, thousands of residents and visitors have used this pedestrian bridge to

get between the Werribee town centre and Wyndham Park. It is not only remarkable for its colourful appearance, but it also provides a unique experience, walking among the treetops through the park.” “This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication that went into this project and ultimately, into providing the community with this iconic bridge.” The Wedge St bridge is located near the Wedge Street Piazza, on the corner of Wedge and Watton streets, Werribee. WESTERN Suburbs residents are being urged to slow down on the roads this Easter long weekend. Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, said that the public holiday would bring extra challenges for road users. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road,” Mr Giddings said. “If you plan on having a drink then plan not to drive. Taking a big risk like drink

driving is just not worth endangering your life or other road users.” Mr Giddings said while the holiday period and the arrival of wet weather would create more risks, speeding drivers were still the number one danger on Victoria’s roads. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings said it was up

to the community to make a stand against dangerous driving. “Engaging a changing community will assist in the community taking on the responsibility of understanding the effects and consequences of speeding and rivers that speed,” he said. “The community being involved through awareness of issues in their local area will encourage community policing and reporting so that compliance with speed limits improves.” Anyone that witnesses dangerous driving should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS! Don’t make a Grave Mistake Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

Garage sale for girls By XAVIER SMERDON A WERRIBEE woman who has been touched by cancer is using her experience to help change the lives of other people. Samantha King has been diagnosed with skin cancer twice in the last two years. She said the experience of having to wear a bandage on her face made her feel like she was on display. “The first skin cancer I had was on my nose and so it was there for everyone to see,” Ms King said. “I had plastic surgery, so everything looks fine again now, but I had to wear a bandage across my face for a while.” That situation gave Ms King the idea of holding a Girl’s Garage Sale to help raise money for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. “When I had the cancer I would need to do something to make myself feel better so I would just give myself a lift by buying a new pair of shoes or something,” she said. “When you look good you feel good, so it was one of those sorts of things.” At the Girl’s Garage Sale people will be able to buy makeup, clothes and accessories. Ms King’s goal is to raise $2500 through a range of fundraising events by October, when she will take part in a 200 kilometre bike ride as part of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The garage sale will be held on Sunday 27 April at 9 Olivetree Close in Werribee. For more information about Samantha King is holding a Girls Garage Sale to raise the Ride to Conquer Cancer visit money for cancer research. 118287 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI www.conquercancer.org.au

Tayla takes to the water By XAVIER SMERDON THE family of a Hoppers Crossing toddler with a lifethreatening disorder is receiving a helping hand from a local swimming school. Tayla Garrard was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) at birth and the three-year-old now needs to take 28 doses of medicine every day to help her live with the condition. Thanks to Paul Sadler Swimland in Hoppers Crossing joining forces with Cystic Fibrosis Victoria, Tayla will receive half price swimming lessons. Swimming has long been

recognised as one of the best activities for children with CF as it helps to develop lung capacity and maintain cardiopulmonary fitness which can slow the progression of the condition. Tayla’s mother Tracey said the half price lessons would help her family care for their little battler. “I think it’s awesome,” Ms Garrard said. “The swimming lessons are one of our biggest expenses so this will definitely help us out a lot.” Cystic Fibrosis Victoria CEO, Helen McNeill, said the

new initiative would make a difference for local families. “This support from Paul Sadler Swimland will make a real difference,” Ms McNeill said. Kids living with CF often long for normality and swimming lessons are such an integral part of the Australian culture, it is an aspect of their therapy which doesn’t set them apart. They not only gain important skills and water safety awareness, they get some vital health benefits.” For more information about the swimming lessons visit www.paulsadlerswimland.com

There’s a new star in the West! Star Weekly, your new local paper, will be launched in early May – and it’s bigger, brighter and better. The publishers of the Weekly titles, Metro Media Publishing (MMP), has merged with Star News Group to produce what will be the Number One source for news and advertising across Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs. Your new local paper will combine the best the Weekly and Star have to offer – the best local news and sport, retail advertising, real estate and classifieds.

the very, very early stages and we’re very confident she’ll be ok,” Ms Gaylor said. “When it does hit home it is a little bit more emotional. “It’s like I said last year, I might not have had cancer but I’ve got to think of my daughters and granddaughters.” To make the event work, Ms Gaylor has asked her fellow Point Cook Retirement Village residents to donate anything that is sitting in their cupboards that they do not want. The biggest prize up for grabs this year is a dinner for two on the Tramcar Restaurant in the city. She said without the help of her fellow residents the event

would never have got off the ground. “I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’ve had a lot of help,” she said. “You’d be surprised how many people in the village have been touched by cancer in some way.” Ms Gaylor said she hoped her morning tea would become an annual event and that it would continue to be held even after she becomes too old to be a part of it. Judith’s Biggest Morning Tea will be held on 15 May from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the Point Cook Retirement Village. For more information call 9394 6699.

The Spottiswoode Hotel is an eclectic gastro-pub..

Bring the whole family for a family fun day.

Good times for fun THE newly renovated Spottiswoode Hotel will host a Good Friday family fun day including prizes and games for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday appeal. Spottiswoode Hotel is a wonderfully eclectic gastro-pub located in Melbourne’s inner western suburb of Spotswood. The venue offers a large variety of beers on tap with a selection of wines to be enjoyed by the open fireplace inside and out. From traditional pub fare to fine cuisine, the Spottiswoode Hotel offers the perfect new venue for casual drinks, special

dinners and business functions. Designed by Frederick Woolfe and constructed in 1888 at 62 Hudsons Road, Spotswood, it is significant for its association with the Spottiswoode family whose name is well known within the region and remembered in the name of the suburb. There will be plenty of free entertainment for the kids, prizes, games, giveaways and face painting, Tammy the Clown and a jumping castle in the beer garden. Entertainer Harley Mick will be taking passengers on a ride

over the West Gate Bridge and for the bigger kids the bar and kitchen will be open all day from noon. Live entertainment will be on all day and all proceeds be directly donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Staff at Spottiswoode Hotel would like to thank everyone for making this a truly local community event though their donations and hard work and wish the community a happy and safe Easter. Contact 9391 1330 for booking or visit www.spottiswoode. com.au for more information.

A Star Advertising Feature

There’s plenty in store at Jim’s THE journey to where it is now has been successfully written by the father son team of Jim and Ivor Morgan. Jim, a consulting structural engineer, saw the opportunity

to convert the solid brick migrant hostel, which had sat vacant for many years. He recognised the need for a high-tech and secure self storage facility that would cater for

the needs of the Hobson’s Bay community. With Jim’s building knowledge and Ivor’s successful managerial skills, Jim’s has evolved as a highly recognised market

leader in the self storage industry providing both residential and commercial storage options. With more than 40 different sized affordable, secure and convenient storage solutions to cater for the needs of individuals, groups and businesses, the newest addition of drive up units now provides for the tradesman and small business operator. This gives customers the

extra space they don’t have in their home, office or workplace. Jim’s also supplies a comprehensive range of boxes and packing supplies so it can offer a one-stop shop. Add to this a free courtesy trailer, qualified removalists on call, onsite trollies and hand carts, individually alarmed units and state-of-the-art security features, Jim’s Self Storage is recognised as a leader in the industry.

In 2011 Jim’s won the Best Facility Expansion/Upgrade as awarded by the Self Storage Association of Australasia and in 2012 it won the Hobson’s Bay Business Excellence Award for Transport and Logistics. Jim’s proudly supports local sporting and community groups as well as the Williamstown Football Club. For assistance with storage needs, call one of the friendly staff on 9397 3435.

Coffee Culture Has anyone else noticed lately that people have started talking about coffee in the same way we talk about fine wine? Personally, I start to glaze over when people start going on above the wonderful caramel undertones in their soy mocha decaf macchiatos or the proportion of milk foam to steamed milk in their flat whites. Is it Fair Trade coffee? Certified organic? Were the coffee beans carted downhill by mules from the mountains of Colombia? It’s all a little bit pretentious for me, but what would I know? While I’m a sucker for a good latte, I’m no coffee snob. I’ll happily make do if instant coffee’s the only thing on offer. Once upon a time, it WAS the only option you’d have at work. Remember the industrial-sized tin of International Roast or Nescafe Blend 43 standing tall and proud by the sink in the office kitchen? Nowadays, coffee machines are not only a standard feature of most work kitchens, we’ve become so reliant upon them that if the machine happens to break down, everyone goes into meltdown, kicking and screaming. I know people who are so determined never to have granulated instant coffee pass their lips, they carry their own

coffee bags everywhere with them. One of my husband’s friends and regular lunch mates is quite pedantic about the temperature of his coffee, and always insists on ordering it “extra hot.” Why, I hear you ask? Isn’t that how coffee is served? But unless it’s hot enough to scald the tastebuds clean off your tongue, this bloke won’t drink it. Admittedly, we have a Nespresso coffee machine in our house and use it all the time. My husband says he will never drink instant coffee again. If instant’s the only thing on offer, he’d prefer to go without. My mum absolutely loves her coffee, so we bought her a coffee machine for Christmas. But when I asked her recently if she uses it, she looked a bit sheepish. She’s always been partial to a cup of Moccona freeze-dried instant coffee and I think she’d sooner have that than muck around with frothing milk with coffee pods. I’d love to hear your feedback on this. Are you a coffee snob? Who or what makes a perfect coffee and how far would you go to hunt one down? Email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

SKYLIGHTS

From April 2014 – May 2014, Melbourne Water is undertaking a control program at Truganina Swamp to reduce the number of rabbits. This is part of our commitment to responsible land management, biodiversity conservation and continued good amenity for our neighbours. An experienced, licenced vermin controller will install bait stations on site using Pindone, an authorised bait for urban areas. Visitors to the area are reminded that Truganina Swamp is a conservation zone and the following precautions should be observed: • Remain on established pathways • Do not attempt to enter the fenced area • Ensure children and pets remain outside restricted areas • Do not touch or handle animal carcasses • Observe warning signs and follow any instructions If you suspect that a pet may have come into contact with bait, seek veterinary treatment immediately and inform the vet that the bait is Pindone. Warriors’ upset win By LIAM TWOMEY HOPPERS Crossing secured its first win under coach Steve Kretiuk, upsetting Sunshine by 21 points on Saturday. After taking a four-point lead into quarter time, the Warriors continued to press their advantage. Hoppers Crossing won the second term by 10 points and the third term by 11 points to hold a 25-point advantage at three-quarter time. The damage could have been even worse for Sunshine with the Warriors having 15 more scoring shots at the final change. Despite a last quarter fightback from the Kangaroos, Hoppers remained in control, sealing the 12.17 (89) to 10.8 (68) win. “As a coaching staff we see Sunshine as a top four side so going into the game we were just hoping for a four quarter effort and we would let the result worry about itself,” Kretiuk said. “That is what we are going to do all year. “They had a really good win the week before and we learnt a lot from our game against Werribee. We just wanted to keep improving and keep

working on the things we have been doing all pre-season. “To the boys’ credit they really stuck to the task. We played four quarters of good quality football and ended up getting the result which is good.” Saturday’s victory sees Hoppers Crossing square its win/loss ledger at 1-1 after two games. The Warriors are in fifth spot on the ladder while Sunshine remains in third. “We took a baby step this week but I think we have a hell of a lot of improvement to go,” Kretiuk said. “I spoke to the boys after the game ... we just need to keep improving. Teams improve throughout the year and we are still a fair bit behind some of the other sides. “All we want this year is to play our brand of footy and to play for four quarters. Regardless of who you play against, you are going to be competitive if you do that. That’s what we want.” This week will see Hoppers Crossing take on St Albans in the now traditional Good Friday blockbuster. The match will be played at Hogans Road Oval.

shorts Spurs ready for season kick-off THE VU St Albans Spurs are looking to improve after a tough 2013 in the Victorian Women’s Football League. The Spurs struggled in the competition’s Premier grade but enter the new season with a solid pre-season under their belts. St Albans will be led by new coach Sean Potter who has replaced Matthew Russell. Potter said he had been rapt with the hard work and commitment his playing group had shown throughout the pre-season. “The girls’ willingness to learn has been fantastic, so from a coaching point of view it has been really easy to teach them the new things,” Potter said. “Obviously with a lot of new girls it has made it some what difficult because you have to really strip it back to the basics. That has even helped some of the older and more experienced players. With footy, the good players do the basics well. “It has been a really good pre-season. The fitness levels are up and there is a really good buzz around the club.” St Albans will kick off its Premier Division season with a home game against Bendigo at Kings Park Reserve. MELBOURNE Knights sank to their second consecutive National Premier Leagues loss against the Dandenong Thunder at Somers Street on Sunday. With the scores deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime, the Thunder struck twice in the second half to secure the 2-1 win. Luis Covarrubias was the lone-scorer for the Knights, who now sit sixth on the NPL table with a 2-2 record. Werribee City sits one spot below with the same win-loss record after going down 1-0 to Bentleigh Greens at Galvin Park on Sunday. The Greens’ Brent McGrath struck home in the first half but the Bees couldn’t respond with the scoreboard remaining at 1-0 through to the final whistle. Sunshine George Cross is currently second on the NPL1 table after scoring an entertaining 4-3 win away to Moreland Zebras on Saturday. Muhamed Chawk scored a brace for the Georgies, while Manuelle Sadik and former Werribee City player Delfin Mosibe Esara also got on the scoresheet. St Albans is fourth after beating Bendigo 2-1 on Sunday.

Titans open record books on day of firsts By LIAM TWOMEY IT WAS a day that will never be forgotten for the Tarneit Titans. Lining up in their first ever match as a senior club, Tarneit wasted no time getting on the right side of the win/loss ledger with a 79-point smashing of North Sunshine. Tarneit president Sue Thornton said it was a special day for everyone involved with the club. “It was absolutely amazing,” she said. “Just getting everything ready, making sure we had enough of ev-

erything, getting all the paper work done and then to get to the day was just a great feeling. “Watching the players run out on to the ground was brilliant and the amount of people we had there. “The seniors got up in the first quarter and they stayed up all day. After seeing them play the practice matches and then seeing them come out and play like that, it was just amazing.” Thornton said the win would be a huge confidence boost for the club’s senior side throughout the season. The round-one victory also saw

another four players join the club the following week, continuing the trend of booming numbers at the Titans. “I think at the beginning of preseason, we didn’t know if we would get the numbers for the seniors but once they started coming, they just kept coming,” Thornton said. “It (winning) built the boys’ confidence up no end. “We played some tough teams in the pre-season and because these boys haven’t played together it was a little hard to gauge how we would go. The coaching staff did really

well and it was just a great day for the club.” With the Division Two competition breaking into two separate divisions half way through the season, Thornton is hoping the wins can keep coming. “We just want them to get as many wins as they can on the board and really gel as a team,” she said. “It would be great to stay in second division. The guys have surprised us so far, they surprised us on the weekend (against North Sunshine) and hopefully they can just keep it going.”

ALTONA enjoyed a good day in the office in Men’s Premier League on Saturday, handing Hawthorn a hockey lesson on the road with a solid 5-3 victory. The Seagulls led 2-0 at half-time before the game opened up in the second half, but it was Altona who struck first through Matthew Huff. Hawthorn struck back with three goals of its own but Altona held true to form and managed to stay in control. Import goalkeeper Tim Pinnegar was impressive on the last line of defence with five good saves on the day. Huff, Matthew Guest, Niels De Jong, Harry Dolenc and Patrick Phillips were Altona’s five goal scorers on the day. Earlier in the day Altona’s women suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat to Hawthorn. Despite letting five goals get past her defences on the day, goalkeeper Taylah Brennan was impressive, making a number of quality saves against an experienced Hawthorn attack.

Tigers take big bite By LIAM TWOMEY THE Werribee Tigers flexed their muscles in the Victorian Football League on Sunday, smashing Bendigo by 83 points. The Tigers didn’t have everything their own way though and were forced to work hard against a fired-up Gold outfit in the first quarter. Bendigo kicked the opening goal of the match and the two teams continued to trade blows in front of the big sticks. At the quarter-time break it was Bendigo that had its nose in front, leading by seven points. However, from there the Tigers clicked into gear. Werribee took control of the match all over the ground, quickly reeling in the deficit and then streaking away. Consecutive goals to Ben Speight, Jye Bolton, Trent Shinners, Mason Wood and Ben Warren turned the seven-point margin into a 27-point lead late in the second quarter. Despite a more competitive showing from Bendigo in the third quarter, Werribee always looked in control of the match before a barrage of final term goals put the result beyond doubt. The Tigers combined for 10 majors in the last quarter to seal the 83-point

win, 24.13 (157) to 11.8 (74). Sunday’s game was originally meant to be played at Werribee’s home ground at Avalon Airport Oval however, the ground and in particular the centre wicket area, was deemed by AFL Victoria and the Werribee Football Club as unsuitable for play. Speaking last week, Werribee CEO Mark Penaluna was disappointed the club’s first home game of the season had to be moved. “The start of any season is filled with expectation and excitement and we were looking forward to hosting our first home game here on Saturday against Bendigo Gold,” he said. “Unfortunately with the Werribee Cricket Club second XI hosting the grand final, work on the ground to prepare it for football began later than normal, and it has not responded well enough to be in the appropriate condition to play this weekend. “We are disappointed for our players and coaches and for our supporters and sponsors.” Werribee will play its next home game on Saturday 26 April under lights against the Northern Blues. Elsewhere in the VFL, Williamstown secured its first win as a standalone club, defeating Footscray.

WILLIAMSTOWN secured its first win of the Victorian Football League season on Sunday, comprehensively beating Footscray by 41 points. While it may look like a regulation victory on paper, the day will be permanently etched into the Seagulls’ history books. As well as collecting the four points, it was also Williamstown’s first win since once again becoming a stand-alone VFL side. The club’s last win as a stand-alone side was in 1999. After dropping their first two games of the season, the Seagulls were switched on from the opening bounce and it didn’t take long for that to translate to scoreboard pressure. Williamstown booted the first goal after Cameron Lockwood pinpointed a pass to Leigh Masters. The Seagulls continued to have the better of the contest for the remainder of the quarter with Jake Charleston, Anthony Anastasio and Willie Wheeler all hitting the scoreboard to give the home team a 20-point lead at the first break. Despite both sides struggling to make inroads on the scoreboard after the break, Williamstown still had the better of the important moments. Ed Carr and Daniel Kulikowski both got their names on the goalkickers’ list to lift the margin to 27 at half-time. After the teams traded goals throughout the third term, Williamstown took control of the match in the final quarter. The Seagulls booted four goals to one to seal the 15.8 (98) to 7.15 (57) win. Anastasio continued his good work from the first quarter and added another two goals to his tally to finish with four for the match. He was well supported by off-season recruit Scott Clouston who took a number of important marks and finished with three goals. For Footscray, on what was a tough day against a likely finals opponent, Mitchell Honeychurch and Marcus Bontempelli worked hard to be among the club’s best players. The weekend’s victory improves Williamstown’s win/loss record to 1-2. This week the Seagulls will take on the Richmond Tigers.

Jets cruise to victory in faultless fly-by By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Jets’ round four clash with the Northern Territory was a non-event at Cragieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday. In what was the Territory’s first competitive hit-out ahead of the national under-18 carnival later this year, the winless Jets scored their first win of their 2014 campaign in cruise control, finishing up 122-point victors. The result was sealed after just one quarter of footy, with the Jets storming out of the block with five unanswered goals in the opening term. By half-time the margin had already blown out to 44 points and in

the third term it only got worse for the visiting Thunder, with the Jets piling on another 10 unanswered goals to break away to a three-figure lead before the three-quarter time siren. In the end the Jets kicked 23 goals for the game to the Territory’s three in what could prove an important percentage-booster come season’s end. Coach Torin Baker has been upbeat about his side’s form in recent weeks and on Sunday was happy to finally see his boys enjoy a win. “We’ve been getting better and better each week,” Baker said. “But ultimately we hadn’t got a win on the board and the players

were obviously keen for that, so to get a result like that today - even though Northern Territory were obviously experimenting with their squad - we were still really happy with the way the guys played. “We dominated the clearances and I think we had a little bit of extra height than they had, so we had some match-ups that were well in our favour and we were able to expose that.” Tylar Vujanic backed up his good showing against Oakleigh last week with a five-goal haul on Sunday, while Mitch Norton and Brenton Payne got three. Payne’s marking presence inside forward 50 was a feature of the otherwise featureless game.

“Brenton Payne’s been really good in every game that he’s played,” Baker said. “He’s kicked 10 goals to date in his four games and he keeps providing really good contests for us and he leads up really well at the footy and he converts well, so he’s had a great start to the year. “I thought Billy Myers (one goal, second-best on ground) put in a real four-quarter performance today. Whether he played forward or onball, he was one that just provided great entries into our forward line. “And then we just continue to get a huge output out of Corey Ellis (two goals and best on ground) every week. His season’s been outstanding to date.”

Falcons sitting pretty

In the

Doghouse

By LIAM TWOMEY KEVIN HILLIER

Grounds for complaint THE Werribee Football Club has every reason to be upset with the Wyndham Council over the state of the surface at Avalon Airport Oval and the relocation of its first home game for 2014. The fact I work for the club is irrelevant in terms of my opinion on this subject, but I wanted to clarify it anyway. It is very obvious that the timetable for the ground use was available for everyone. So it was no surprise. I know a curator in similar circumstances had his ground ready and playable a week before the ground at Werribee. Blame is of little value, but everyone must learn from this so it does not occur in the future. I sometimes think that some people forget just how important the Werribee Football Club is to the local community and how important it is that it is seen to be totally professional. ONE of the tough issues at local footy sports clubs is the serving of alcohol. Most of our clubs have a junior element, and that has its own set of rules and parameters, I would hope. I want to pose a few questions and see what you think. What time do you think you should start serving alcohol on match days? Should you serve players in their jumpers? I should point out I am not directing this at any specific club, it is just a random overview of drinking at the footy. I see a lot of different versions of the rules of what should happen each week. I look forward to your thoughts. SOMETIMES you see a player and wonder why he is not plying his trade at a higher level and Kwame McHarg is one of those players. He is definitely a cut above suburban footy in terms of skill and talent. So why hasn’t he gone to the highest level. It is a question that has haunted footy people for years and will continue to do so. I think of great VFL players like Grant Smith, Brett McTaggart, Richie Raeburn and Trent Churchill who did not play at the next level but should have, and I hope Kwame is not going to be a similar story. He has all the skills I hope he gets his chance and at 22 years of age that should not be an issue.

GREAT win by the Bulldogs over the Giants last weekend and this week they face their former coach in Mick Malthouse and his Carlton side. Mick was terrific for the Bulldogs in his time, taking the team to the 1985 preliminary final, where they missed a grand final appearance by a few points. I was critical of Mick on my FOX FM Breakfast Show when he left the Bulldogs at the end of the 1989 season, and he has never forgotten it. I found that out a few years ago at a Bulldogs function when he gave it to me with both barrels. For me, life is too short for those sorts of grudges, but it does give me some extra spice every time our teams come up against each other. Another Sunday twilight game though is not my favourite time slot but as it is Easter and school holidays I hope we get a good crowd. DON’T miss the Hoppers Crossing versus St Albans game on Good Friday at Hogans Road Reserve starting at 3pm. The Good Friday Gift over 100 metres will be on before the game. CITY West Falcons are in prime position to win their third consecutive Victorian Netball League Championships after a flawless first half of the season. The Falcons have smashed their rivals and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 8-0 win/loss record. City West coach Marg Lind was rapt with her side’s start to the season and admitted the perfect record was unexpected. “I think a good indicator was that we played the (Melbourne) Vixens a couple of times in the pre-season and did quite well,” Lind said. “That was an indicator that we certainly had some depth. “To predict that we were going to be here 8-0, maybe not. It is nice but I’m not sure it is something we necessarily expected.” To highlight City West’s dominance, only once this season has its winning margin been kept to single digits. That was in round eight when Western Suburbs rival VU Western Lightning lost by nine. “I think the three areas (shooters, mid-court and defence) have held well together,” Lind said. “The defenders have been exceptional. “I think Clare (Moylan) and Maggie (Lind) as a mid-court combination have benefited from not having had to go off the court very often. We don’t have big numbers in the team and they have developed through on going court time and we are able to mix them up in two different positions. “The goalers have worked very well. In the past we have had a tall post in shooter and a more dynamic goal attack which has won us a lot of premierships. This year we have got that plus two dynamic goalers that we can put together as well.” When round nine of the VNL season gets underway this weekend, the Falcons will be red hot favourites to extend their winning streak to nine when they take on bottom of the ladder, Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. City West is two games clear on top of the VNL ladder with Boroondara Genesis in second spot. Lind said her overall goal for the season of adding another premiership to the club’s collection hadn’t changed. “We always want to win,” she said. “From the start of the season that was our goal. We want to win the premiership. You re-assess every three of four weeks depending on the ladder and your challenges but I’d be lying if I said we weren’t aiming for a premiership. That is certainly our goal.”

Secret revealed By LIAM TWOMEY

Bulldogs come up trumps By LIAM TWOMEY AFTER winning the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final earlier this month, Footscray Edgewater was given even more reasons to smile after the competition’s awards night. In the Jack Ryder Medal, which is awarded to the best player for the Premier Cricket season, the Bulldogs continued their reputation for consistency with three players finishing in the top 17. They were Dylan Kight, Travis Dean and Dean Russ, who all polled 21 votes from six matches. The top prize was won by Prahran’s James Miller. Miller claimed the Jack Ryder Medal in a dramatic final round, which saw him leapfrog Camberwell’s Simon Hill and St Kilda’s Matt Chasemore. Miller was the leading wicket-taker in the home and away rounds with 47 wickets at 14.36 and also scored 602 runs at 37.63. Throughout the night, the good news continued for Footscray, which also had two players named in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year. Bulldogs captain Russ was joined by gun quick Jake Haberfield in the 12-man side while St Kilda’s Graeme Rummans was named captain. Other members included David King, Simon Hill, Marcus Stoinis, Matt Chasemore, Aaron Ayre, James Miller, Ian Holland, Bryce McGain and Jake Reed. Meanwhile, in the women’s Premier Cricket awards, Dandenong Lions all-rounder Sarah Elliott claimed her second Una Paisley Medal for the Premier Player of the Season. The 32-year-old polled 36 votes and finished seven votes clear of Box Hill’s Meg Lanning. The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit star amassed 491 runs at an average of 54 while also taking 13 wickets with the ball.

THE rest of Australia is starting to catch on to how much of a special talent Morgan Mitchell is. But in the Western Suburbs, her remarkable abilities in the sporting arena have been known for years. Mitchell’s place among the best sprinters in Australia was formally recognised last week when she qualified for the Commonwealth Games after a blistering run at the Australian Championships. The Werribee resident shaved a full second off her personal best time en-route to winning the 400-metre National Title. “To be honest, it is a relief and very exciting as well,” Mitchell said of her amazing run. “The past month leading up to it was a bit hectic and I was just trying to get my race plan right. For it to happen on that day was almost like a blessing. I was so lucky and I was so happy. Now it is all over. I’m in the team, no-one can take my spot and it all worked out. I’m really happy and really excited.” Mitchell will travel to Europe next month and compete in a number of lead-up race meetings as part of her Commonwealth Games preparations. After that she will travel with the Australian Athletics team to Glasgow in July and is set to run in both the 400m individual race and the relay. “I’m already a little bit nervous for what’s to come,” Mitchell said. “I haven’t really thought about the actual race yet but I think with the travelling, I have never done it. You have to be independent now. It is not like juniors where you are spoon-fed. “I think that is what I am most nervous about, getting everywhere on time and doing everything right.” At 19 years of age, Mitchell will be one of the youngest members of the Australian Athletics Team. However, that doesn’t mean she is setting small goals. The former Williamstown High School student is hoping to take even more time off her PB. “I told Burkey (her coach Peter Burke), if I can knock a second off in the space of a month, imagine what I can do in four months,” she said. “I do want to keep getting my time down but I also really want to make the final. If I do get into the final, obviously I am going to give it my all to try and medal. I am still young but it would be nice to medal. “If I can get my time down I think I am a chance but it is hard to know. Anything can happen.” Mitchell’s official qualification and history as an Australian under-age netballer has seen her profile grow quickly throughout the sporting media. She admitted seeing her face in the paper and on TV had taken a bit of getting used to. “It is actually really crazy,” Mitchell said. “I’m still getting used to the thankyou messages you get from people. I’ve got a long list I have to reply to already. I’m still trying to stay grounded and not get caught up in it. Mum keeps reminding me, make sure you remember who you are. It is just really exciting.”

The Tigers are now 1-1 and were impressive under new coach Ryan Tout, scoring twice in the first half before sealing the win with the third goal after the break. Sam Huxtable was the star, scoring two of the three goals on the day. Captain Ross Cowlishaw said his side provided a much stronger showing than the previous week. “It was a good day and a lot better than last week,” Cowlishaw said. “Obviously in the first game everyone was a bit slow. “This week we got the ball rolling within the first five minutes. We

got two up on the scoreboard in the first half and then slotted the last one in the second half. “We ran the ball well and used first-time options.” Cowlishaw gave credit to his new coach Tout for instilling a new level of professionalism over the summer, and said he hoped it would convert into more wins this year. “He’s brought across a lot of professionalism coming across from a Vic League One club,” Cowlishaw said of Tout. “He’s brought in some video analysis and we’ve got three assistant coaches working on different things, stats and that sort of thing. Everyone’s worked on that and everyone’s improved on their own game and realised what they need to do to get to the next level.”

Pacers drag down Devils By ADEM SARICAOGLU

WERRIBEE was shell-shocked by a previously winless Whittlesea Pacers outfit in State Championship Men’s Big V Basketball on Saturday night. The Devils had started their 2014 campaign well with three wins from five starts, but it was the Pacers who looked the goods right from the opening tip-off. Werribee’s lack of defence exposed the visitors in the back court and allowed for many easy Whittlesea points, and by quarter-time the score already read an ugly 30-11 in favour of the hosting Pacers. Mark Hughes’ men then steadied and managed to break even for the second and third quarters, but were coming from way too far back to get back into the game. By the final term the game had become a fizzer and while Werribee won the quarter 19-10, it did little to change the complexion of the ball game, which ended 77-66 Whittlesea’s way. The Devils struggled to quell the Pacers’ Jason Dirkx, who was the most dominant force on the court with 29 points and seven rebounds for the night. Jermaine Williams combined well with Dirkx for 18 points and six boards. For Werribee too much was left to Aaron McCuin, who spent just about the entire 40 minutes on the floor and ended up with 23 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Rustin Dowd tried hard for 14 points and Anthony Luxford contributed 10, but the Devils simply lacked offensive potency and were left to rue what proved a costly opening term. At 3-3, Werribee now sits outside the top six

Jordan Hughes was in action for Werribee on Saturday night. 101067 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT in seventh place on the table and will now enjoy a break over the Easter weekend before resuming the court away to Diamond Valley in round six. Werribee’s women fared better at home to Mildura on Saturday, improving their record to 3-2 with an 81-67 win. Elisha Burnette put up 30 points to leave the Heat little chance of a win after trailing by seven at quarter-time. At the final change the Devils’ lead was just two points but normal service resumed in the final stanza, with Werribee smashing Mildura 28-16. Werribee is sixth on the Division One table and will host Craigieburn on Sunday week.

Hoppers belted it in HOPPERS Crossing has established itself as the early front-runner in State League Four soccer after handing Melton Phoenix a 4-0 belting at Grange Reserve on Saturday. Three of the four goals came in the second half, with Khalil Assaad and Alister Smart both finding the back of the net twice on the day. 118455 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT

The award winning team at Werribee Mazda.

Mazda dealership proves its worth YEAR after year, Werribee Mazda proves it is among the best dealerships in the country on customer service and sales with the accolades to back it. Werribee Mazda has won the Mazda Master Dealer Excellence Award for the 19th year of the 20 years the Mazda Master Dealers program, which offers the awards, has been running. Dealership principal Paul Zele attended the awards ceremony last month in Brisbane to collect the award on behalf of the Werribee Mazda team. The dealership has been servicing the West for more than 36 years and fellow dealer principals Joe Prelovsky and Colin Johnstone have been with the company almost as long. Mr Zele said the team’s success is a tribute to the experience of its members. “Mazda is very proud of its staff who deliver great service

and they have pretty high expectations. “We have a lot of very long serving staff members who have been with Mazda for many years starting in sales, through to management and have become principals. “We have a lot of return customers who enjoy dealing with the people they’ve dealt with before. “Their experience and knowledge is what keeps customers coming back so we must me doing something right,” he said. Mr Zele has been with the company for 12 years. At the awards presentation, 17 dealers from Mazda’s 127-outlet retail network received excellence awards for their performance in 2013, which is judged across areas including customer satisfaction, business performance, facilities and “compliance with Mazda

Australia business standards”. The Mazda Master Dealer Excellence Award is the car manufacturer’s ultimate recognition for excellence in the dealership operations in Australia. Award recipients are required to meet demanding sales productivity benchmarks, demonstrate the highest standards of customer service, comply with stringent facility and business system standards while also maintaining earnings sufficient to fund sales growth and continuing attention to customer satisfaction. Werribee Mazda is at 28 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, and opens weekdays from 8.30am to 6pm, Saturday from 8.30am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Call 9974 5666 for more information.

Test rocket hits the highs SLEEK, stylish and downright good fun to drive, the zippy pocket rocket that is the latest Nissan Micra also delivers serious bang for the bucks. Wheels Magazine agrees, awarding it the 2012 Gold Star Value Award for Best Light Car. This savvy little number gives a host of features which are not expected in a small car, including five doors, exceptional space, responsive power and all the smart features anyone would need. Plus, the ST-L and Ti models come with a ‘look at me’ rear spoiler, fog lights and super flash 15” alloy wheels. What a little show off! Nissan Micra is as practical as it is stylish. Not to mention surprisingly spacious. A generous, three-tiered

glovebox storage system gives you somewhere to stash all your 21st century necessities, without getting in a tangle. There’s also a passenger seat handbag holder on the ST-L and Ti models so contents don’t end up all over the floor when cornering. The driving arm can be kept comfy with an armrest and a surprising amount of headroom that’s generous enough to accommodate a beehive comeback. Across the Nissan Micra range owners will enjoy the responsive power of a small, but gutsy 1.2 litre engine, delivering 56 kW of power and 100Nm of torque, for feisty performance whether you’re zipping around town or heading out to the country.

The automatic Ti model makes driving a breeze and there’s a choice of either manual or automatic transmission across the rest of the range If you’re dashing about town, Nissan Micra’s ability to negotiate tight city lanes and tricky corners is sure to impress; it has a miniscule turning circle of just nine metres; one of the smallest in its class. When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Nissan Micra will leave a smile on your dial. Visit Werribee Mitsubishi to test drive this vehicle at 17-25 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday 8.30am-6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9741 5300 for more information.

Cerato springs surprises and greater appeal WHICHEVER body style, the all new Cerato is packed with the latest technology, safety and convenience features. Initial impressions of the new model recently released have been very positive. Reviewer Tim Beissmann of caradvice.com.au said: “It was one of the most surprising cars of 2011 - and a likely award winner if a Most Improved Car of the Year trophy were to exist - and now it has increased its appeal with new variants and a cheaper starting point.” It includes the perfect blend of practicality and style. Those searching for that hard-to-find combination of stunning exterior styling and sensible functionality need look no further. Cerato is also available in a hatch version that delivers on both. Advanced lighting systems are just a taste of the many hightech innovations to be found inside and out of this vehicle. Owners will be able to enjoy not only stylish sophistication but also greater visibility for added safety and convenience at night. LED daytime running lights ensure added safety by clearly defining the car’s position on the road while also projecting a sense of style in SLi models only. HID headlamps emitting a distinctive blue hue light up more of the road with a more penetrative, accurate beam. The all new Cerato’s dynamic silhouette is accentuated by a sweeping roofline, shortened

The driver-oriented cockpit, featuring an intuitive instrument and switch layout, is the perfect blend of functionality and style. The centre console is angled toward the driver by nine degrees while the distinctive wave-like design of the dashboard completes the overall look. Ergonomically-designed driver space provides precise, fingertip control, together with exceptional comfort. Taking centre stage is a high-tech supervision cluster with 4.2” full-colour TFT-LCD that displays a comprehensive range of vehicle information. Meanwhile, a floor console tray with sliding cover lets occupants store essentials within easy reach and a sliding centre armrest provides extra comfort on long journeys.
