Easter treat
FAMILIES across Hobsons Bay are getting ready to enjoy Easter festivities this weekend with youngsters already counting down the days until everyone’s beloved bunny arrives and delivers tasty chocolate treats. And little Matilda is no exception. Like most toddlers she has enjoyed a sneaky treat or two this week and is looking forward to waking up on Sunday morning to house filled with chocolate. 118398 Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

MORE than 130 penalty notices were issued to Hobsons Bay residents as part of a summer-long operation that targeted crime and anti-social behaviour at Altona and Williamstown beaches. Operation Foreshore began in December last year and ended last month with police issuing 137 notices for a range of public order offences including possessing alcohol in a prohibited area, drunk in a public place, using indecent language, behaving in a riotous manner and various traffic offences. Police also charged a further 41 people with offences including theft, assault, traffic offences and a range of other offences, targeting anti social behaviour. Hobsons Bay Inspector Richard Paterson said overall police were pleased with behaviour over summer, particularly as the area experiences an influx of visitors during this period. “Many people come to experience all that Hobsons Bay has to offer during the warmer months. We established the Summer Policing
Team to focus on crime and public order issues during this period,” he said. “Part of their focus was to engage with traders and the general public about the visible police presence and also to conduct regular foot patrols on beaches with a focus on speaking to them about the importance of not leaving their belongings unattended. “We received positive feedback from the local community- people like to see police patrolling and making the beaches safer.” On one day of the operation, a staggering 10 mobile phones were stolen from underneath the Altona pier within 30 minutes - one of the first summer offences. Statistics revealed that as the heat soared so did the offences, with stolen property reports filed each day. Mobile phone, bags, wallets and credit cards were among the most popular items targeted by thieves. Sergeant Dean Howard from Williamstown police station said the high-level of co-operation with shop-keepers and locals also helped reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.

Upholding heritage By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO HOBSONS Bay City Council will formally request from the Minister for Planning an independent planning panel to consider the unresolved submission to the former Nugget Factory in Williamstown. The amendment, which proposed to include site specific heritage overlay on the former site, was exhibited from 30 January 2014 to 14 March 2014. One submission objecting to the amendment was received. Meanwhile, the council has adopted an amendment, which sought to ensure the St Stephens Uniting Church on Melbourne Rd, Williamstown, is appropriately protected through the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study. The amendment was exhibited publicly for 30 days and adopted documentation will be submitted to the Minister for Planning. At last week’s meeting, the council also endorsed four motions to be put to the Municipal Association of Victoria State Council in relation to affordable housing, integrated transport, access to mental health services for young people, and major hazard facility planning. As the peak statutory body for local government in Victoria, MAV takes a lead role in advocating to the Victorian Government on issues of concern for local governments. The motions will be put before the MAV’s state council meeting next month.

Murder charge There’s a brand new sound in Hobsons Bay A WILLIAMSTOWN quartet that is making a name for themselves across the globe with their unique style of music now hopes to bring their passion to the residents of Hobsons Bay. Chris Basile and fellow muso Gordon Ramsay have launched steel pan classes in Newport and believe the genre will take off in Melbourne’s West.
Originating in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the percussion instrument has become popular in other parts of the world, but is yet to take off in Australia - something Chris hopes will soon change. “It’s not so well known in Australia,” Chris told Star. “We’re aiming to provide classes to people in the Western Suburbs and create a group to play at festivals.”
The experienced music instructor encouraged residents of all ages to try out the affordable classes and said the catchy style of music which was made from 55 gallon oil drums, was sure to be a big hit. “It’s lots of fun, easy to learn, but it can take a lifetime to master.” The quartet, which also includes Chris’ sons Adam and Ry, have even made a name for themselves in the US after a YouTube video of them
playing the theme song to the popular 1960s sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie went viral. Star of the show and Hollywood icon Barbara Eden complimented them on their skills writing, “How fun!!! Great job guys! You make this Jeannie proud! xo Barbara”. Anyone interested in attending the classes should contact Chris at Williamstown Guitar School on 9397 0482, or Gordon at Watershed Steel Pans 0404 885 341.

West jobs joint plea By XAVIER SMERDON ALL SIX councils from across the Western Suburbs have united in a desperate bid to try and stop the region from losing more jobs. Melbourne’s West Economic Response Taskforce was recently formed and met for the first time earlier this month with representatives from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attending. CEO of Western Suburbs advocacy group LeadWest, Craig Rowley, said the Taskforce was formed as a reaction to the end of motor vehicle manufacturing in the West.
He said that following Ford’s closure announcement in 2013, the Federal and State Government’s established funding to be applied over three years in recognition of the economic and social of the economic and social impact of the closure on communities in Geelong and Melbourne’s North. “Taskforce representatives from LeadWest and the local governments of Melbourne’s West unanimously agreed that fair and equitable treatment is a must,” Mr Rowley said. “The Taskforce will formally request that the Australian and Victorian Government deliver a
significant and comprehensive adjustment package to be applied in Melbourne’s West. “This would be on par with how Geelong and Melbourne’s North were helped.” Mr Rowley said the Taskforce would also try to help people that had lost their jobs to find new employment opportunities. “The Taskforce will help facilitate a successful transition from jobs exited at Toyota, Ford and Holden into other jobs and sectors,” he said. “It will also have an eye to the longer term and redouble efforts to grow and diversify the economy of
Melbourne’s West so there are improved job opportunities closer to where people live.” In February Toyota announced that it would stop making cars in Australia by 2017, with the loss of 2500 jobs. The announcement came after last year’s announcements that Ford will cease production in October 2016 and Holden would stop by 2017. It is expected that more than 50,000 jobs could be lost in the automotive manufacturing industry, with many of those jobs coming from Melbourne’s West.
Protest over a book-free future By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THE Save Newport Library campaign continues to progress with residents and Hobsons Bay City Council working together towards a positive outcome. Prominent campaigner Sarah Vincent has told Star at least 40 residents met with councillors, council officers and staff from the current library on April 2 to hold talks on the future of the library and nominate for a place on a soon-to-be formed sub-committee. Frustration from library users has been gaining momentum after a meeting in February revealed the proposed new library precinct that would replace the existing library would not contain books. Since then the council has shelved plans to replace physical books with e-books after facing the wrath of the Save Newport Library group, who now have over 400 likes on their Facebook page. The multimillion-dollar project, called “The Newport Youth Seniors Project”, will include a library, youth service room, a music room or recording studio, a maternity room and more. Ms Vincent encouraged residents to continue to get on board and show their support for the group by visiting the Facebook page. She said the last public meetings held have been “incredibly reassuring” and the council has assured residents that they would have a significant input into the final plans for the library. Attendees at the meeting were asked to create a wish list for the library which included items like books, a dedicated children’s area, DVDs, magazines, newspapers, a printer station, computers, a quiet study area and ESL materials. Residents were also told that the new library will have a greatly reduced collection of items, compared to the 12,000 it presently holds.

remained opened. Last week, Star reported the underpass had been closed. A spokesperson from transport minister Terry Mulder’s office said the closure was necessary to begin vital work at the station. The spokesperson said the work would create an “at-grade level crossing suitable for all Victorians”. However, Mr Bennett said the underpass allowed pedestrians safe access to the station.
“Everyone is always running late for trains, but normally people would just use the underpass,” he said. “I felt absolutely gutted after seeing what happened last Friday night, these people could have been killed. “To take away the only safe way of crossing the station is ridiculous.” Mr Bennett said he still recalled the deaths of siblings Amanda and Thomas Barrett at the station over 20 years ago and said he was
fearful tragedy might strike again. Last week Hobsons Bay chief executive officer Chris Eddy said the council was involved in the early stages of risk and design options to improve pedestrian safety at the high traffic location. Mr Eddy said the council did not have the opportunity to participate in the finalisation of the project plans, and was not advised of the commencement of works until they occurred.

A FORMER Williamstown resident believes the State Government’s decision to close the underpass at North Williamstown railway crossing might cost lives. New jobs report LAVERTON North’s business community has joined forces with Wyndham City Council to launch a new report outlining the thousands of jobs and billions of dollars generated in this industrial region. The Economic and Employment Activity in Laverton North report, which was prepared using Economic Analysis tool REMPLAN, was developed in conjunction with the Wyndham Industrial Liaison and Development (WILD) committee. It reveals Laverton North and Truganina industrial precincts generate $7.3 billion in economic activity per annum, employs 14,700 people, has 1499 hectares of developed industrial zoned land and has 969 hectares of industrial zoned land that is currently unoccupied. Harrison Ward councillor Glenn Goodfellow said it was vital that adequate infrastructure was put in place to ensure the region continued to grow. “The majority of the municipality’s economic output generated and one third of local jobs come from Laverton North,” Cr Goodfellow said. “With the majority of the region occupied by heavy industrial sectors such as manufacturing, construction, trade, transport and warehousing, improving the existing road infrastructure is a must.” Cr Goodfellow said the region is worth $7.3 billion a year to Wyndham and the Victorian economy and it can’t continue to function on cracking roads and two lane motorways. “Major thoroughfares like Dohertys Rd have been neglected for decades need to be upgraded. The section between Grieve Parade and Fitzgerald Rd needs duplicating urgently.” The Economic and Employment Activity in Laverton North report is available to view at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au

Art overtakes a city By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO ART in Public Places this year will be a treat for Hobsons Bay residents with more than 40 artists across Melbourne’s West exhibiting their work. This year’s program is already in full swing with exhibitions popping up throughout the municipality. Aimed at promoting partnerships between local artists, cultural groups and businesses, the event is hosted by Hobsons Bay City Council and has well and truly taken over the city. Whether you are picking up flowers at Altona Les Fleur or grabbing a coffee at Crowded House, buying some jeans at Brixton Pound or perhaps getting your taxes done at Navacue in Altona, you will be able to see amazing works by local artists. There are also a number of temporary art installations located in surprise venues. One installation is Up the Shops Down the Street - created by local primary school students with the help of curator Heather van Heerwaarden. Students were asked to write about their favourite shops and places and why they like living in Hobsons Bay in 10 words or less. The sentences can be found along Nelson Place, Douglas Parade and Ferguson St. Some other events taking place in the coming weeks include an exhibition featuring work from renowned artist Katrina Manton at the Plume Art Gallery. Manton’s work illustrates her passion and inspiration for Indigenous art and their communities and is the backdrop for her collection of bags and accessories. There will also be a series of free workshops at Woods

War centenary volume launch
WINNING VALUE
By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO AS Australians begin to commemorate the centenary of World War I, young students across Hobsons Bay will be given the chance to be at this week’s launch of a very special book. Meet ... The Anzacs is a moving story written by well-known children’s author Claire Saxby and illustrated by Max Berry. The book will be launched at Williamstown Library. It is the fifth book in the bestselling Meet ... picture book series, telling the stories of the extraordinary men and women who have shaped Australia’s history, including Ned Kelly, Saint Mary MacKillop, Captain Cook and soon-tobe-released Douglas Mawson. This story is aimed at readers six years and up and describes how the legend of the Anzacs began. A spokesperson from Random House Australia said the book illustrated the bravery of Australian soldiers who helped define the nation. “In this moving picture book, readers aged six and up are introduced to the feeling of patriotism and naive excitement that many Anzac soldiers felt when they enlisted to fight for their country. Readers then learn how this excitement turned to boredom and then fear as the reality and horror of war began.” The book will be launched on Wednesday 16 April.

Slow it down over Easter By XAVIER SMERDON WESTERN Suburbs residents are being urged to slow down on the roads this Easter long weekend. Chairman of the RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council, Jim Giddings, said that the public holiday would bring extra challenges for road users. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road,” Mr Giddings said. “If you plan on having a drink then plan not to drive. Taking a big risk like drink
driving is just not worth endangering your life or other road users.” Mr Giddings said while the holiday period and the arrival of wet weather would create more risks, speeding drivers were still the number one danger on Victoria’s roads. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face,” he said. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.” Mr Giddings said it was up
to the community to make a stand against dangerous driving. “Engaging a changing community will assist in the community taking on the responsibility of understanding the effects and consequences of speeding and rivers that speed,” he said. “The community being involved through awareness of issues in their local area will encourage community policing and reporting so that compliance with speed limits improves.” Anyone that witnesses dangerous driving should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS! Don’t make a Grave Mistake Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

There’s plenty in store at Jim’s THE journey to where it is now has been successfully written by the father son team of Jim and Ivor Morgan. Jim, a consulting structural engineer, saw the opportunity to convert the solid brick migrant hostel, which had sat vacant for many years. He recognised the need for a high-tech and secure self storage facility that would cater for the needs of the Hobson’s Bay community.
With Jim’s building knowledge and Ivor’s successful managerial skills, Jim’s has evolved as a highly recognised market leader in the self storage industry providing both residential and commercial storage options. With more than 40 different sized affordable, secure and convenient storage solutions to cater for the needs of individuals, groups and businesses, the newest addition of drive
up units now provides for the tradesman and small business operator. This gives customers the extra space they don’t have in their home, office or workplace. Jim’s also supplies a comprehensive range of boxes and packing supplies so it can offer a one-stop shop. Add to this a free courtesy trailer, qualified removalists on call, onsite trollies and hand carts, individually alarmed
units and state-of-the-art security features, Jim’s Self Storage is recognised as a leader in the industry. In 2011 Jim’s won the Best Facility Expansion/Upgrade as
awarded by the Self Storage Association of Australasia and in 2012 it won the Hobson’s Bay Business Excellence Award for Transport and Logistics. Jim’s proudly supports lo-
cal sporting and community groups as well as the Williamstown Football Club. For assistance with storage needs, call one of the friendly staff on 9397 3435.

Has anyone else noticed lately that people have started talking about coffee in the same way we talk about fine wine? Personally, I start to glaze over when people start going on above the wonderful caramel undertones in their soy mocha decaf macchiatos or the proportion of milk foam to steamed milk in their flat whites. Is it Fair Trade coffee? Certified organic? Were the coffee beans carted downhill by mules from the mountains of Colombia? It’s all a little bit pretentious for me, but what would I know? While I’m a sucker for a good latte, I’m no coffee snob. I’ll happily make do if instant coffee’s the only thing on offer. Once upon a time, it WAS the only option you’d have at work. Remember the industrial-sized tin of International Roast or Nescafe Blend 43 standing tall and proud by the sink in the office kitchen? Nowadays, coffee machines are not only a standard feature of most work kitchens, we’ve become so reliant upon them that if the machine happens to break down, everyone goes into meltdown, kicking and screaming. I know people who are so determined never to have granulated instant coffee pass their lips, they carry their own
coffee bags everywhere with them. One of my husband’s friends and regular lunch mates is quite pedantic about the temperature of his coffee, and always insists on ordering it “extra hot.” Why, I hear you ask? Isn’t that how coffee is served? But unless it’s hot enough to scald the tastebuds clean off your tongue, this bloke won’t drink it. Admittedly, we have a Nespresso coffee machine in our house and use it all the time. My husband says he will never drink instant coffee again. If instant’s the only thing on offer, he’d prefer to go without. My mum absolutely loves her coffee, so we bought her a coffee machine for Christmas. But when I asked her recently if she uses it, she looked a bit sheepish. She’s always been partial to a cup of Moccona freeze-dried instant coffee and I think she’d sooner have that than muck around with frothing milk with coffee pods. I’d love to hear your feedback on this. Are you a coffee snob? Who or what makes a perfect coffee and how far would you go to hunt one down? Email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

SKYLIGHTS
From April 2014 – May 2014, Melbourne Water is undertaking a control program at Truganina Swamp to reduce the number of rabbits. This is part of our commitment to responsible land management, biodiversity conservation and continued good amenity for our neighbours. An experienced, licenced vermin controller will install bait stations on site using Pindone, an authorised bait for urban areas. Visitors to the area are reminded that Truganina Swamp is a conservation zone and the following precautions should be observed: • Remain on established pathways • Do not attempt to enter the fenced area • Ensure children and pets remain outside restricted areas • Do not touch or handle animal carcasses • Observe warning signs and follow any instructions If you suspect that a pet may have come into contact with bait, seek veterinary treatment immediately and inform the vet that the bait is Pindone. Jets win in fly-by By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE Western Jets’ round four clash with the Northern Territory was a non-event at Cragieburn’s Highgate Reserve on Sunday. In what was the Territory’s first competitive hit-out ahead of the national under-18 carnival later this year, the winless Jets scored their first win of their 2014 campaign in cruise control, finishing up 122-point victors. The result was sealed after just one quarter of footy, with the Jets storming out of the block with five unanswered goals in the opening term. By half-time the margin had already blown out to 44 points and in the third term it only got worse for the visiting Thunder, with the Jets piling on another 10 unanswered goals to break away to a three-figure lead before the three-quarter time siren. In the end the Jets kicked 23 goals for the game to the Territory’s three in what could prove an important percentage-booster come season’s end. Coach Torin Baker has been upbeat about his side’s form in recent weeks and on Sunday was happy to finally see his boys enjoy a win. “We’ve been getting better and better each week,” Baker said. “But ultimately we hadn’t got a win on the board and the players were obviously keen for that, so to get a result like that today - even though Northern Territory were obviously experimenting with their squad - we were still really happy
The Western Jets finally got to enjoy the taste of victory on Sunday. 118628 Picture: ADEM SARICAOGLU with the way the guys played. “We dominated the clearances and I think we had a little bit of extra height than they had, so we had some match-ups that were well in our favour and we were able to expose that.” Tylar Vujanic backed up his good showing against Oakleigh last week with a five-goal haul on Sunday, while Mitch Norton and Brenton Payne got three.
Payne’s marking presence inside forward 50 was a feature of the otherwise featureless game. “Brenton Payne’s been really good in every game that he’s played,” Baker said. “He’s kicked 10 goals to date in his four games and he keeps providing really good contests for us and he leads up really well at the footy and he converts well, so he’s had a great start to the year.
“I thought Billy Myers (one goal, second-best on ground) put in a real four-quarter performance today. Whether he played forward or onball, he was one that just provided great entries into our forward line. “And then we just continue to get a huge output out of Corey Ellis (two goals and best on ground) every week. His season’s been outstanding to date.”
Day of firsts for Seagulls By LIAM TWOMEY WILLIAMSTOWN secured its first win of the Victorian Football League season on Sunday, comprehensively beating Footscray by 41 points. While it may look like a regulation victory on paper, the day will be permanently etched into the Seagulls’ history books. As well as collecting the four points, it was also Williamstown’s first win since once again becoming a stand-alone VFL side. The club’s last win as a standalone side was in 1999. After dropping their first two games of the season, the Seagulls were switched on from the opening bounce and it didn’t take long for that to translate to scoreboard pressure. Williamstown booted the first goal after Cameron Lockwood pinpointed a pass to Leigh Masters. The Seagulls continued to have the better of the contest for the remainder of the quarter with Jake Charleston, Anthony Anastasio and Willie Wheeler all hitting the scoreboard to give the home team a 20-point lead at the first break. Despite both sides struggling to
make inroads on the scoreboard after the break, Williamstown still had the better of the important moments. Ed Carr and Daniel Kulikowski both got their names on the goalkickers’ list to lift the margin to 27 at halftime. After the teams traded goals throughout the third term, Williamstown took control of the match in the final quarter. The Seagulls booted four goals to one to seal the 15.8 (98) to 7.15 (57) win. Anastasio continued his good work from the first quarter and added another two goals to his tally to finish with four for the match. He was well supported by offseason recruit Scott Clouston who took a number of important marks and finished with three goals. For Footscray, on what was a tough day against a likely finals opponent, Mitchell Honeychurch and Marcus Bontempelli worked hard to be among the club’s best players. The weekend’s victory improves Williamstown’s win/loss record to 1-2. This week the Seagulls will take on the Richmond Tigers.

shorts Spurs ready for season kick-off THE VU St Albans Spurs are looking to improve after a tough 2013 in the Victorian Women’s Football League. The Spurs struggled in the competition’s Premier grade but enter the new season with a solid pre-season under their belts. St Albans will be led by new coach Sean Potter who has replaced Matthew Russell. Potter said he had been rapt with the hard work and commitment his playing group had shown throughout the pre-season. “The girls’ willingness to learn has been fantastic, so from a coaching point of view it has been really easy to teach them the new things,” Potter said. “Obviously with a lot of new girls it has made it some what difficult because you have to really strip it back to the basics. That has even helped some of the older and more experienced players. With footy, the good players do the basics well. “It has been a really good pre-season. The fitness levels are up and there is a really good buzz around the club.” St Albans will kick off its Premier Division season with a home game against Bendigo at Kings Park Reserve. LOOKING further down the line, Spurs Sean Potter said he expected Melbourne Uni to be a contender come the business end of the season along with Darebin and St Kilda. “I think you really can’t go past Darebin,” he said. “From what I have heard they haven’t lost any players and they seem to be travelling along quite nicely so I would say they will definitely be up there. “Melbourne Uni I would say would be up there too. They have a good system going on there and I would expect them to be one of the stronger teams. “St Kilda has also recruited quite well ... so they will probably be another tough one to knock off.” MELBOURNE Knights sank to their second consecutive National Premier Leagues loss against the Dandenong Thunder at Somers Street on Sunday. With the scores deadlocked at 0-0 at half-time, the Thunder struck twice in the second half to secure the 2-1 win. Luis Covarrubias was the lone-scorer for the Knights, who now sit sixth on the NPL table with a 2-2 record. Werribee City sits one spot below with the same win-loss record after going down 1-0 to Bentleigh Greens at Galvin Park on Sunday. The Greens’ Brent McGrath struck home in the first half but the Bees couldn’t respond with the scoreboard remaining at 1-0 through to the final whistle. Sunshine George Cross is currently second on the NPL1 table after scoring an entertaining 4-3 win away to Moreland Zebras on Saturday. Muhamed Chawk scored a brace for the Georgies, while Manuelle Sadik and former Werribee City player Delfin Mosibe Esara also got on the scoresheet. St Albans is fourth after beating Bendigo 2-1 on Sunday.

Dale moving on By ADEM SARICAOGLU OUTGOING Melbourne Aces manager Phil Dale insists reports he chose to walk away from the Altona-based organisation are not entirely accurate. Dale had led the Aces since their inception in the Australian Baseball League - but the club decided to advertise for his position after a 22-24 season. “I saw the media release that said more or less I was walking away but I think it was the other way,” Dale told Star. “But it doesn’t matter either which way. I’m not involved. “I was more or less told they were advertising for my position and when someone advertises for your position, it’s obvious they’re looking somewhere else. “They wanted to advertise for my position so after the meeting, that was fine. No problem. “It’s a sporting club, but I’m not one to walk away.” While a full-time role, Dale’s commitment to the Aces was limited to the ABL season itself, which runs for about four months during the summer. However, Dale juggled his Aces role with his main fulltime gig as a scout for Ma-
jor League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves. Dale is also a pitching coach for the Australian national team - which recently took part in the MLB’s opening series weekend at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Once Dale learned his Aces position was up for grabs, it was decided it was best to part ways. Dale says he won’t hold a grudge and may still look to be involved with the Aces in other capacities down the line. He saw the Aces job as an opportunity to help develop the growing sport down under, and has taken great pleasure in watching its progress in recent years. “I just told them I’ve got other things to do - which I do,” Dale said. “I’ve been involved in baseball my whole life and I make my living through baseball in other places. “It’s not big money out here at the moment so I do it more for the development of baseball in this country. That’s why I get involved and it’s only a fourmonth commitment, full-time. “It’s a very raw league and it’s been developing every year so hopefully it’ll get better and better.”
Phil Dale says he hopes baseball can develop into a force within the Australian sporting landscape after the Melbourne Aces chose to part ways with him as manager. 109837 Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Gators set to bite back By ADEM SARICAOGLU
James Guljas is making a comeback for the Altona Gators after injuries have hampered their start to the season. 83816 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
THE Altona Gators have been cruelled by injuries in the first month of the Division One Men’s Big V Basketball season. The Gators are 1-3 and sixth in the Terrill Division but will have a full fortnight to regroup after what has been a disastrous beginning to their 2014 campaign under new coach, Des Radoslovic. “Daniel Borbajo broke his wrist before a game a couple weeks ago,” Radoslovic explained. “We had Daniel Nichols injure his knee and he’s getting scans this week just to confirm what could be an ACL injury, we’ve had Randy Shanklin who hasn’t been able to take the court because of a hip injury and Joey Mausar hasn’t been able to train. “He’s been playing games and limping through with an injured Achilles and calf and Daniel Ellul, our captain, has re-strained his Achilles and he’ll have a couple of weeks’ rest now as well.” Despite that lengthy list of current outs, Radoslovic remained positive about his side’s start to the year. “We’ve done fairly well considering the challenges,” he said. “I suppose it could be a bit of a blessing in disguise
in the end because it shows you everything you’ve got and 1-3 is good to start given we’ve had three games on the road as well. So if we get onto a bit of a streak later in the year when we’re fully fit, we should be right. “The boys definitely need to step up their intensity on defence and their rebounding, but we could have a couple of inclusions coming into the team over the break as well which could help our problem on the boards.” Promising big man Wilson Arob has come on board after a stint in the US playing junior college ball, while Altona stalwart James Guljas is coming back after spending 2013 away from the court. Radoslovic hopes Altona’s upcoming two-week spell from competitive action will give him a chance to push the restart button with his two new big guns now in the fold. “They’re both big fivemen, so it gives us more time to adapt with them on board,” Radoslovic said. “It’s been a weakness for us so far. We’re shooting the ball quite well but we’re just lacking on the defensive end. “But there’ll be no major wholesale changes, just a few little tweaks that we’ll work out over the next couple of weeks.”
Jason Cloke takes a strong mark for Spotswood against Altona on Saturday. 118509 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI
Spotswood wins roll on By LIAM TWOMEY SPOTSWOOD continued its impressive start to the 2014 Western Region Football League season, knocking off Altona by 81 points on the weekend. The Woodsmen didn’t have it all their own way early though and were forced to work hard in a tough first quarter. However, after taking a seven-point lead into the opening break, Spotswood broke down the Vikings’ resistance. Across the next three quarters, the Woodsmen piled on 17.13, while restricting Altona to just 6.5. The dominating effort across the grouand proved more than enough to seal the 21.17 (143) to 9.8 (62) win. Former Western Jet David Iaccarino was a star for
Spotswood, booting three goals and winning a lot of the ball around the ground. He was well supported by Sam Myors and Christian Elliott who were also among the Woodsmen’s best. For Altona, Jordan Robbins was the leading goal scorer with three majors. Saturday’s result maintains Spotswood’s unbeaten start to the division one season. After beating Port Melbourne in round one, the Woodsmen are in second spot on the ladder, only behind Deer Park. The news isn’t as good for the Vikings, who drop back to eighth with a 1-1 win/loss record. When round three gets under way, next week, Spotswood will take on St Albans while Altona will meet Yarraville.

Falcons sitting pretty
In the
Doghouse
By LIAM TWOMEY KEVIN HILLIER
Grounds for complaint THE Werribee Football Club has every reason to be upset with the Wyndham Council over the state of the surface at Avalon Airport Oval and the relocation of its first home game for 2014. The fact I work for the club is irrelevant in terms of my opinion on this subject, but I wanted to clarify it anyway. It is very obvious that the timetable for the ground use was available for everyone. So it was no surprise. I know a curator in similar circumstances had his ground ready and playable a week before the ground at Werribee. Blame is of little value, but everyone must learn from this so it does not occur in the future. I sometimes think that some people forget just how important the Werribee Football Club is to the local community and how important it is that it is seen to be totally professional. ONE of the tough issues at local footy sports clubs is the serving of alcohol. Most of our clubs have a junior element, and that has its own set of rules and parameters, I would hope. I want to pose a few questions and see what you think. What time do you think you should start serving alcohol on match days? Should you serve players in their jumpers? I should point out I am not directing this at any specific club, it is just a random overview of drinking at the footy. I see a lot of different versions of the rules of what should happen each week. I look forward to your thoughts. SOMETIMES you see a player and wonder why he is not plying his trade at a higher level and Kwame McHarg is one of those players. He is definitely a cut above suburban footy in terms of skill and talent. So why hasn’t he gone to the highest level. It is a question that has haunted footy people for years and will continue to do so. I think of great VFL players like Grant Smith, Brett McTaggart, Richie Raeburn and Trent Churchill who did not play at the next level but should have, and I hope Kwame is not going to be a similar story. He has all the skills I hope he gets his chance and at 22 years of age that should not be an issue. GREAT win by the Bulldogs over the Giants last weekend and this week they face their former coach in Mick Malthouse and his Carlton side. Mick was terrific for the Bulldogs in his time, taking the team to the 1985 preliminary final, where they missed a grand final appearance by a few points. I was critical of Mick on my FOX FM Breakfast Show when he left the Bulldogs at the end of the 1989 season, and he has never forgotten it. I found that out a few years ago at a Bulldogs function when he gave it to me with both barrels. For me, life is too short for those sorts of grudges, but it does give me some extra spice every time our teams come up against each other. Another Sunday twilight game though is not my favourite time slot but as it is Easter and school holidays I hope we get a good crowd. DON’T miss the Hoppers Crossing versus St Albans game on Good Friday at Hogans Road Reserve starting at 3pm. The Good Friday Gift over 100 metres will be on before the game IF you have any news or events please let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia. com.au and you can follow me on Twitter @ KevinHillier and check out the website howdypartnersmedia.com.au

CITY West Falcons are in prime position to win their third consecutive Victorian Netball League Championships after a flawless first half of the season. The Falcons have smashed their rivals and sit on top of the ladder with a perfect 8-0 win/loss record. City West coach Marg Lind was rapt with her side’s start to the season and admitted the perfect record was unexpected. “I think a good indicator was that we played the (Melbourne) Vixens a couple of times in the pre-season and did quite well,” Lind said. “That was an indicator that we certainly had some depth. “To predict that we were going to be here 8-0, maybe not. It is nice but I’m not sure it is something we necessarily expected.” To highlight City West’s dominance, only once this season has its winning margin been kept to single digits. That was in round eight when Western Suburbs rival VU Western Lightning lost by nine. “I think the three areas (shooters, mid-court and defence) have held well together,” Lind said. “The defenders have been exceptional. “I think Clare (Moylan) and Maggie (Lind) as a mid-court combination have benefited from not having had to go off the court very often. We don’t have big numbers in the team and they have developed through on going court time and we are able to mix them up in two different positions. “The goalers have worked very well. In the past we have had a tall post in shooter and a more dynamic goal attack which has won us a lot of premierships. This year we have got that plus two dynamic goalers that we can put together as well.” When round nine of the VNL season gets underway this weekend, the Falcons will be red hot favourites to extend their winning streak to nine when they take on bottom of the ladder, Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. City West is two games clear on top of the VNL ladder with Boroondara Genesis in second spot. Lind said her overall goal for the season of adding another premiership to the club’s collection hadn’t changed. “We always want to win,” she said. “From the start of the season that was our goal. We want to win the premiership. You re-assess every three of four weeks depending on the ladder and your challenges but I’d be lying if I said we weren’t aiming for a premiership. That is certainly our goal.”

Celeste is burning up on the track By LIAM TWOMEY WILLIAMSTOWN Athletics Club’s Celeste Mucci continues to amaze on the track. The gun teenager’s most recent win came earlier this month when she claimed a gold medal in the under 16 heptathlon event at the Australian Championships. Heptathlon involves athletes competing in seven different events across two days. Despite having only recently taken up some of the disciplines, Mucci proved too strong for her rivals. On day one she won three individual events, the 90m hurdles (13.12sec), the high jump (1.72m) and the 200m (26.04sec) and came in 12th in the shot put (7.98m). On day two Mucci won the long jump (5.36m) before coming seventh in the javelin (26.39m) and seventh the 800m (2m 35.90sec). The Maribyrnong College student had an overall score of 4866 points, more than 400 ahead of her nearest rival. Williamstown Athletics Club coach David Jamieson was rapt with Mucci’s performance. “Celeste is doing exceptionally well,” Jamieson said. “She has really taken to a few extra events after being largely centred around the sprints, hurdles and the long jump. “She has really got passionate about the high jump and now she is interested in the other field events, the shot put and javelin.
Bulldogs come up trumps By LIAM TWOMEY

Fontaine, who came fifth in the long jump after a leap of 7.41m while Daniela Roman and Carl Van Der Speck both competed in the 100 metres.
AFTER winning the Victorian Premier Cricket grand final earlier this month, Footscray Edgewater was given even more reasons to smile after the competition’s awards night. In the Jack Ryder Medal, which is awarded to the best player for the Premier Cricket season, the Bulldogs continued their reputation for consistency with three players finishing in the top 17. They were Dylan Kight, Travis Dean and Dean Russ, who all polled 21 votes from six matches. The top prize was won by Prahran’s James Miller. Miller claimed the Jack Ryder Medal in a dramatic final round, which saw him leapfrog Camberwell’s Simon Hill and St Kilda’s Matt Chasemore. Miller was the leading wickettaker in the home and away rounds with 47 wickets at 14.36 and also scored 602 runs at 37.63. Throughout the night, the good news continued for Footscray, which also had two players named in the Victorian Premier Cricket Team of the Year. Bulldogs captain Russ was joined by gun quick Jake Haberfield in the 12-man side while St Kilda’s Graeme Rummans was named captain.

Meanwhile, in the women’s Premier Cricket awards, Dandenong Lions all-rounder Sarah Elliott claimed her second Una Paisley Medal for the Premier Player of the Season. The 32-year-old polled 36 votes and finished seven votes clear of Box Hill’s Meg Lanning. The Commonwealth Bank VicSpirit star amassed 491 runs at an average of 54 while also taking 13 wickets with the ball.

Cerato springs surprises and greater appeal WHICHEVER body style, the all new Cerato is packed with the latest technology, safety and convenience features. Initial impressions of the new model recently released have been very positive. Reviewer Tim Beissmann of caradvice.com.au said: “It was one of the most surprising cars of 2011 - and a likely award winner if a Most Improved Car of the Year trophy were to exist - and now it has increased its appeal with new variants and a cheaper starting point.” It includes the perfect blend of practicality and style. Those searching for that hard-to-find combination of stunning exterior styling and sensible functionality need look no further. Cerato is also available in a hatch version that delivers on both. Advanced lighting systems are just a taste of the many high-tech innovations to be found inside and out of this vehicle. Owners will be able to enjoy not only stylish sophistication but also greater visibility for added safety and convenience at night. LED daytime running lights ensure added safety by clearly defining the car’s position on the road while also projecting a sense of style in SLi models only. HID headlamps emitting a distinctive blue hue light up more of the road with a more penetrative, accurate beam. The all new Cerato’s dynamic silhouette is accentuated by a
The Cerato can really pack it all in. sweeping roofline, shortened front and rear overhangs and distinctive side character line. The result is a sleek yet purposeful side view that stands out from the crowd. The driver-oriented cockpit, featuring an intuitive instrument and switch layout, is the perfect blend of functionality and style. The centre console is angled toward the driver by nine degrees while the distinctive wave-like design of the dashboard completes the overall look. Ergonomically-designed driver space provides precise, fingertip control, together with exceptional comfort. Taking centre stage is a high-tech supervision cluster with 4.2” full-colour TFT-LCD that displays a comprehensive range of vehicle information. Meanwhile, a floor console tray with sliding cover lets occupants store essentials within easy reach and a sliding centre armrest provides extra comfort on long journeys.
An advanced climate control system means driver and passengers can relax on every journey, all year round. Seat warmers provide reassuring comfort on cold days, while automatic air conditioning and an air-ventilated driver’s seat keep the owner cool when the temperature rises. An auto defog system activates automatically when condensation is detected on the windshield glass and a Clean Air module ensures air flowing into the car is clean and odour-free. Visit Werribee Kia, Isuzu Ute to test drive this vehicle at 22 Morris Rd, Hoppers Crossing. It is open from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, or call 9974 3799 for more information. Alternatively, visit Western Kia, Isuzu Ute at the corner of the Western Highway and Christies Rd, Caroline Springs, which is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am6pm, or call 8390 5165 to learn more.
