Police hunt sex predator POLICE are seeking information on this man after two sexual assaults in six days occurred in Lawrence Street, Wodonga. TURN TO PAGE 5 FOR DETAILS

■ Their world is ruled by the...

Sounds of hate By KRYSTEN MANUEL “JUST get over it.” It’s a phrase we all use, but it’s one Jodi Homer and her 17-year-old daughter Lucy never want to hear again. Jodi and Lucy suffer from misophonia, a mental disorder that misophonia.com describe as: “literally the hatred of sound - can be defined as a hypersensitivity to background sounds or visual stimuli that are generally ignored by other people. “More importantly than the individual’s inability to block out the offending stimuli or ‘trigger’ is the acute negative emotional response experienced as a direct result of being in contact with a trigger.” For Jodi and Lucy, the sound of people eating would bring with it an overwhelming wave of rage - something Jodi has harnessed but still has Lucy sitting with headphones on during meals. But they say it’s time to “spread the word” for the sake of others who suffer in silence. “I started having irritations at around age nine,” Jodi said. “I started focusing on people eating in almost a good way, and then it turned into an inability to let go. I started to focus on them to the point where they started to annoy me and it got the point where I’d be driving myself insane. “All through my teenage years I was irritated with everyone I lived with - if you think about the logistics of that, it makes life tough. “In my books my mum, dad and sister didn’t eat very politely, but the more I’d tell them to not eat the way they ate, the less they’d listen to me.

So I had to put up with it and it made me a cranky person. “I can’t remember a nice Christmas ever because Christmas, of course, involves sitting down and eating. Often I’d make an excuse to leave the table and I’d cry because I was unhappy. “I felt sheer anger - I’d tell people to shut up, give them dirty looks, get quite aggressive with it and eat my dinner as quickly as I could and get out of there. Even to this day I wolf down my food ... “I was a lot younger than my first husband and went for seven years before it started to become a problem with him. The things he did started to irritate me. It got to the point where I couldn’t stand him walking on the floorboards with bare feet, it’s all sorts of things - breathing, the way he cleared his throat, things most people wouldn’t even notice.” Jodi was in turmoil about her condition - not only was it unbearably frustrating, day in day out, she began to question herself as a person. “You beat yourself up, you doubt yourself because everyone had indicated I wasn’t a very nice person so I thought ‘They’re probably right’.” When Jodi’s daughter Lucy began showing signs of misophonia at age nine, Jodi simply googled the symptoms. To her shock and relief, a word appeared that embodied her decades of torment. “I found hyperacusis and other people with the same symptoms I just burst into tears and thought ‘Maybe I’m not nasty after all’.” Continued Page 6

Jodi Homer and her daughter Lucy Crawford are speaking out about misophonia.

Smile camp By KRYSTEN MANUEL CAMP Quality was held at the Lake Hume Resort once again, providing a chance for children battling cancer and their families with a chance to “forget they’re on the cancer journey.” Camp leader Mez Moffatt has been involved with the local program for 20 years and said the weekend was jam-packed with fun activities thanks to generous donations of time, money and facilities. “We had seven families from a range of locations - a couple from Canberra, some local families and a Wagga family,” she said. “They came down on the Friday night to Lake Hume and we were lucky enough to have the Questacon people staying out there, so the families had the joy of them entertaining us. “On Saturday we utilised the lake, we had some fishermen out there from the Commercial Club fishing organisation, we had the canoe guy out from Albury and the Lions and Rotary clubs of Albury came out

and ran a couple of games and helped us with the catering. “On Saturday afternoon we went into The Astor - they’re a big supporter of Camp Quality and have raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years. “Camp Quality recently did a massive survey of the families and their needs and one of the things that came out of that survey is the parents never get any time together, so we have a time where the children are without their parents. The carers take the children into the movies and do tenpin bowling and a few things while the parents got to enjoy an afternoon to themselves. The dads went sailing and the mums got some pampering. Then the mum and dad got to go to dinner together and we took the kids to Intensity. “On Sunday we headed into Harveys Fun Park - Harveys have been incredibly generous over the last three years, so we spent the rest of our time there.” Camp Quality’s services are provided for children (0-13 years) living with cancer and

their families to help create a better life by building optimism and resilience throughout each stage of their cancer journey. Right from diagnosis, throughout treatment and in remission or bereavement, Camp Quality programs support the whole family; at hospital, at home, back at school and in the community. Camp Quality has been operating since 1983 and still operate by the motto ‘laughter is the best medicine’. Across Australia Camp Quality held 129 family fun days, 69 family camps and 40 kids’ camps this year thanks to 2,500 volunteers who donated approximately 300,000 hours. “It’s forgetting that they’re on the cancer journey,” Ms Moffatt said. “For the children it’s a two year commitment for them to be in and out of hospital and when we’re on camp the only people that really know who the child is that’s actually sick are the leaders and the medical staff. We try to get everyone to treat everyone the same.”

Question of race – and riot BONEGILLA will feature as a key slice of history in the upcoming three-part SBS documentary series, The Great Australian Race Riot. Best-selling author Peter FitzSimons will present the series and arrived at the Bonegilla Migrant Experience on Monday. The series will reveal the surprising history of race riots in Australia and examine how they have influenced the country’s character and development. “This is the place where they had the riot back in the 1950s,” Mr FitzSimons said. “It was fascinating because I’m a great supporter of multiculturalism but it was not an easy birth for multiculturalism in Australia ... “The Second World War is over, there’s a stunned silence. Bombed-out Europe is overwhelmed with hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Like most Western countries, Australia wants security and peace, so we signed (up for) the 1948 UN refugees and the next thing you know, we’re bringing in mass immigration, mass immigration from Europe and elsewhere. “Part of the documentary is where did the White Australia Policy come from? A lot of it came with the Chinese diggers - there was only so much gold to go around and when the Chinese came in massive numbers and pulled the gold out of the ground a lot of the white miners said ‘Oi! Out!’ and then it got violent. “Even in the 21st century, multiculturalism is not accepted by everybody. There are still people, in my view, that want us to be whitebread Australians. “The premise of the documentary, more or less, is that Cronulla Beach was not an aberration, that we had a long history of race riots in Australia and it’s fascinating with what it says about us at the time and how we as a people react to them.” The Bonegilla race riots occurred in 1952 and 1961. In 1952, young Italian migrants arrived in Australia with the expectation of being given work immediately, though jobs were difficult to come by due to the economic recession. Having to wait three or more months in temporary camp

A

conditions, the Italians held a riot in the administration block. In 1961, migrants rioted again for the same reasons and in the late 1960s the government built new migrant accommodation facilities - embarrassed by the previous two incidents.

Peter FitzSimons is the writer of hugely popular Australian histories and biographies including Eureka: the Unfinished Revolution, Kokoda and the memoir A Simpler Time. He is also a member of the most consistently riotous tribe in Australia: the Anglo-Celt majority.

“We’re not putting Bonegilla in nasty headlines, we’re looking at the history,” he said. “This was a significant cultural event and it’s through telling that story that you tell a wider story. “I’m very proud of Australia in the sense that so many nations around the world are throwing rocks and grenades and bullets at each other and in Australia we have 167 ethnicities and we more or less rub along together. “I think it’s interesting to look at how we got to this point because we came from a pretty racist past. It’s by understanding our history that we understand how we got here and how we can head off in the future.” The Great Australian Race Riot is an Essential Media and Entertainment production for SBS; financed with the support of Screen Australia’s National Documentary Program. 1128132-LN14-14

Police seeking dual sex pest

the greatest entertainment value in town

By KRYSTEN MANUEL SEXUAL Crime Squad detectives believe separate assaults on a 55-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl, just six days apart, are the work of the same perpetrator. Detectives are currently in Wodonga investigating the incidents, the first of which occurred on 25 March, with both victims attacked on Lawrence Street. Police have been told a woman was gardening in the front yard of a house on Lawrence Street when she was approached by a man who sexually assaulted her at approximately 6.30pm. The man was seen to walk away from the scene west along Lawrence Street towards Melrose Drive. Police believe a number of cars slowed as they drove past the scene which may have looked like a domestic dispute, and are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to come forward. On 31 March it’s believed the same man tried to drag a 16-year-old girl into a black car as she walked home on Lawrence Street, opposite Kelly Park, at 3.40pm. He lured her over by pretending to fall and when she came to assist him he hit her on the head with a blunt object, but she escaped.

Have you seen this man? Police are looking to speak with him after the sexual assault of two women last month. Police are appealing for drivers, especially one of a dark coloured sedan, who slowed down when passing the yard. The man is said to be Caucasian in appearance, with a medium build, aged 55-60 years with grey hair and a pot belly. He was last seen wearing

blue, faded, stone-wash jeans and a black T-shirt. Anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log on to www. crimestoppers.com.au

It’s definitely a lot worse when you’re stressed. Symptoms multiply and you get twice as stressed, it’s really difficult. “You have this rage. It boils up and you have your fists clenched. WHAT IS MISOPHONIA? Literally the hatred of sound, can be defined as a hypersensitivity to background sounds or visual stimuli that are generally ignored by other people. More importantly than the individual’s inability to block out the offending stimuli or ‘trigger’ is the acute negative emotional response experienced as a direct result of being in contact with a trigger. The response has been described as a reflexive emotional flood of rage and panic with a storm of fight-or-flight reactions becoming paramount.

Bigger bins By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Do you need a bigger bin? Wodonga’s Cr Anna Speedie and Albury mayor Kevin Mack want to give residents every opportunity to recycle to their full potential. waste department and minimise costs for residents now and in the future. “We’re actually the fourthlargest landfill in NSW,” she said. “We’re one of the few that are still owned and operated by council - most of them are privately owned. “What drives us is the landfill life has a life of 15-20 years left unless we do quite significant infrastructure improvements to make sure that it’s here for the next 50-60 years.

“We’ve identified six projects that need to be implemented over the next four or five years to help reduce our waste being buried - that’s critical for us.” Albury residents wanting to upgrade to a larger recycling bin can call the council on 6023 8111. Wodonga residents should call the council offices on (02) 6023 9300. Other interested residents can contact their respective councils to organise a 360-litre bin. Costs of a new bin will vary among councils.

1127816-PB16-14

ALBURY and Wodonga councils have banded together to push the recycling message, with the introduction of a larger recycling bin as a new option for residents. “Five councils have taken up a waste initiative and this is another one of those examples,” Wodonga councillor Anna Speedie said. “So we joined with Albury to put this message out there. “We’re finding that about 20 per cent of rubbish that’s going into red bins could still be recyclable. So it’s a message to keep up the recycling but this gives, particularly families, the opportunity to pay a little more to have a larger bin so they can make the most of recycling.” Households are typically allocated a standard 240-litre bin, but Albury and Wodonga residents can upgrade to a 360-litre bin for only $20 extra per year. “We’re trying to reduce the amount of recycling that’s going into landfill, we’re trying to offer an opportunity for residents to increase their capacity to recycle,” Albury mayor Kevin Mack said. “The Albury landfill receives around 200,000 tonnes of waste each year. Our goal is to recycle 100,000 tonnes or 50 per cent of the waste still going to landfill, including both household and business waste in 2014.” Albury waste team leader Andrea Baldwin said the initiative was part of a large plan to keep up the good work in the

Tales of mice and men By KRYSTEN MANUEL OF MICE And Men is a classic tale bold, challenging and brilliant, and it’s coming to Wodonga. World-class dancer and choreographer Tim Podesta has teamed up with Scottish dancer and choreographer Andy Howitt to remind the Border that you don’t have to go overseas, or even to Sydney or Melbourne, to experience quality performing arts ... NW: How did this production of Of Mice And Men come about? TP: I met my collaborator, Andy Howitt, the director of Aus Dance Vicoria and we really hit it off. We both have a long history in dance and we really like to do work that’s accessible to everybody. Of Mice and Men is a classic story and we like the fact that even though it’s such an old story, it’s still something we can relate to now. NW: What’s the story about? TP: It’s about two guys and it’s based in the Depression. They’re really trying their best to survive and find a good way to live. Their relationship is very weird in that they both need each other to survive but both struggle to live with each other - they’re very different personalities. Lenny is a bit delayed and can get very aggressive but at the same time he craves touch. At the beginning of the story he has just had an altercation with a woman where he was trying to

Box office

touch her and get that love he craves. It certainly isn’t anything sinister, he’s just not aware of how he comes across. So the particular woman doesn’t feel comfortable and it puts us in a position where we have to escape. The scene starts with us running away. My character, George, is the stabiliser of the relationship. So we escape and end up working on this property as farmhands and as the story evolves the tension between us escalates. It gets to the point where Lenny isn’t aware of his strength and aggression and ...

NW: Don’t spoil the story! How does this particular plot lend itself to dance? TP: We’ll be using contemporary dance as the mode to portray the story. Contemporary dance is so accessible and the language is very versatile. Andy and I have led very successful careers in the industry and now we’re at an age where I think we have the maturity to portray the depth of the story. I come from a classical ballet background and when you start doing things with that classic heritage like

Swan Lake and Of Mice And Men, you have to do it justice. I wouldn’t have tried to do this story any earlier. NW: Tell me about your history and training as a dancer. TP: I grew up in Wodonga. Andy is from Scotland. We both have very similar backgrounds in that we started late. I was 16, I was very passionate about drama and my drama teacher said I should go and do some dance classes to help with my posture and movement. So I went and did that, I learnt very quickly and got accepted into the

Australian Ballet school and went and did my training there. I danced all over the world, then I transferred through into choreography. Dance gave me the vehicle to be physical and express myself as well. NW: How has Of Mice And Men challenged you? TP: Typically I’ll dance or I’ll choreograph, but in this production both Andy and I are co-producing, co-choreographing and co-performing, so it increases the pressure. NW: You have a strong connection to the Border through your company, why? TP: My company (PROJECTion Dance) always opens productions here. We have these awesome venues and I think there’s still that perception that regional arts isn’t as worthwhile or sophisticated as metropolitan works. There’s still this thought that if it’s European it’s better - it’s just not the case. In terms of how communities are embracing the arts and local product I think we still have a long way to go. We’ve just been nominated for an Australian Dance Award, so things like that continue to change people’s minds. Of Mice And Men is on Thursday 24 April and Saturday 26 April at 7.30pm, The Cube. Inquiries: 02 6022 9311.

MOVIE: Divergent STARRING: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet. DIRECTOR: Neil Burger DURATION: 140 minutes HAVING not read the books, this film has inspired me to start. DIVERGENT is based on Veronica Roth’s best-selling series and makes for a thoughtprovoking exploration of the complexities of human nature. And what better way to start this exploration than in a post-apocalyptic setting ... Tris Prior lives in a world where humans are separated into distinct factions based on human qualities – Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity, and Candor. The story begins with Tris

about to make a decision that would change her path in life forever. Every 16-year-old in society is given an aptitude test to find out what faction they truly belong in – where their natural character and instincts fall. When Tris is found to be Divergent she is told to keep her identity a secret and make a decision as to what faction she thinks she belongs in. She chooses Dauntless. The Dauntless faction is composed of soldiers – highly skilled and fearless. Leaving her family and everything she knew back in Abnegation, Tris eventually finds her feet in Dauntless and moves through her testing. But soon a bigger problem emerges than passing tests – Divergents are being wiped

out and the basic right to freedom is on the same path. When sitting through Divergent, you know everyone in that cinema is thinking the same thing – what faction would I most likely fit in? It’s an inevitable exercise but enjoyable all the same. Why? Because no matter how long we’ve lived with ourselves, we still ask the same questions: Who am I? And what do I have to give up to be me? Woven with other themes that hauntingly align themselves with the running of today’s society, Divergent is an easy, enjoyable and excitable film for any age.

A NEW exhibition is coming to GIGS Gallery to showcase themes of feminine power and complexity, all wound together with the raw natural beauty of the bush. Bush Lace is a product of three talented artists who graduated from the Australian National University’s School of Art - Beth Peters, Louise Upshall and Rondalyn Parker. “We explore themes about the feminine and our place where we come from, Peters said. “We’re really tied to the Australian country. I live in Chiltern now and I’m surrounded by national parks, and the others grew up in the country. “It’s finding a human relationship with nature. The exhibition presents a myriad of mediums - drawing, painting, collage, textile and sculpture, all explored through fascinating and inspiring processes. “Louise is a collage artist from Canberra and she transforms found images into per-

sonal power symbols, Peters said. “Louise does textiles, so she’ll have found clothing, usually things from op shops things that have been used and then disregarded, she’ll give them a new lease on life by dying them. The technique she has is unbelievable, by getting the eucalyptus leaves and gumnuts. “She explores woman as powerful, especially through her collage, which is Australian mammals made of female body parts from National Geographic and women’s fashion magazines. The mammal is wild and feminine and it’s mixed with the beauty or superficial beauty. It’s a power play. “With my own work, it’s a lot about garments and clothing, lace garments that are made for the body but it’s when you take the body out of them they just become these dresses and clothes with no body in them - they lose what they were made for but they retain a spiritual presence. “You can look at them like they have this spiritual, psychological or emotional presence.

So there’s a physical absence of the body but somehow a memory of the body. “Rondalyn does intricate drawings of women covered in lace and flowers. It embodies the idea of women’s resilience but also decay of women, decay of flowers and time. “There’s still that presence and absence, her work is very veiled and unveiled with women’s faces and lacework and flowers. Peters said her inspiration came from a unique experience of restoring an old 1860s home in Chiltern that hadn’t been lived in for 30 years. “ ... Just these things that were made for people and they become empty of people, but there’s still so much history there and memory of people, time and place, she said. “So I felt a real connection with emptiness and restoration - presence and absence and the transition between the two. Bush Lace opens on 23 April and closes 18 May. A meet the artists session will be from 10am - noon at GIGS Gallery on 26 April.

Beauty-ful soundscape By KRYSTEN MANUEL IN ITS 15th year, the Mount Beauty Music Festival will fill the lively little town once again, promising a weekend that’s positively bursting at the seams with live music, food stalls and a range of activities. Forty bands of musicians, poets and dancers from Australia and abroad are set to entertain the crowds with 130 festival performances, 16 workshops, a fringe festival and buskers. Mt Beauty’s modest population of 2,300 swells to 3,500 over the weekend, a massive economic boost for the community, but also providing an exciting atmosphere. “It’s just the whole atmosphere of the festival, it brings a completely different perspective to Mt Beauty during that weekend,” festival president, Margaret Brereton said. “We have something to suit every age and taste and plenty of unique styles for people to enjoy, with everything from Spanish flamenco to bluegrass, cigarbox playing and funky music. “This festival celebrates all things live and prides itself on opening new avenues of experience for audiences.” Ms Brereton has been involved with the festival since

the very beginning when an interest group got together, presented the idea and rallied the community around them. “Myself and a number of other people attended that first public meeting,” she said. “We undertook a feasibility study at that time and took it back to the community meetings. “It certainly has grown and it’s become an annual event the community really looks forward to.” The festival program suits all ages and includes African drumming, Spanish flamenco, Australian folk, Americana, Celtic, Klezmer Balkan, pop, epic rock blues, roots, bluegrass, poetry, comical, classical, Scottish pipes, rockabilly, calypso and country grooves, poetry, dance, workshops, cigarbox guitar playing, children’s programs, ukuleles, jazz and everything in between. Musicians across the weekend include: Faye Blais, Alaska String Band, Albury Wodonga Pipe Band, Andrew Szery, Flash Company, Hundred Acre Woods, Indianna Drew and Acacia Keeble, Jenny Taylor Ensemble, Jenny Taylor Lipstick and Spurs Choir, Justin Johnson, Karavana Flamenca, Louie and the Pride, Mal Webb, Mama Toto, Mic Conway with

Robbie Long, Mount Beauty Community Band, Mount Beauty Kindy Kids Choir, Mount Beauty Stage Band, Nick Parnell, Ross Royce, Salvation Jane, Spookie Ukie, Super Mande Percussion, Suzannah Espie, Suzie Dickinson, The Beez, The Dukes of Despair, The Junes, The Kiltless Kelts, The Kissin’ Cousins, The Royce Twins, The Ugly Uncles, Todd Cook, Ungus Ungus Ungus and Zeptepi. “We have everything from folk through to classical through to rock and everything in between,” Margaret said. “It’s an eclectic mix of artists, including poets, children’s activities, workshops, a fringe festival, markets, a food court.” “If you’ve come before and loved it, or never had the chance to experience such a broad array of live music and are keen to broaden your horizons and kick up your heels, this is the event for you.” The Mount Beauty Music Festival will be held from Friday, 25 April to Sunday, 27 April, in and around the Mount Beauty township. Homes&Property Albury Wodonga

Loads of potential in store By KRYSTEN MANUEL

Bedroom one is also located at the front end of the home - queen size with a built-in robe and extra overhead storage. The back half of the home opens out to a large, light-filled room with polished floorboards, fan and sliding door out to the entertainment area - the family room. Bedroom two and the master bedroom are located at the back of the home. Both carpeted and with built-in robes, the only difference is size. Bedroom two is queen size and the master enjoys the spacious luxury that comes with being king size. Outside, the entertainment area is completely undercover – fantastic for the unpredictable autumn weather we’ve been experiencing. The yard also houses rainwater tanks, a substantial vegie garden for the green thumbs and a long, threecar lock-up garage or workshop. This property screams potential and would be a perfect investment property for those looking to rent it out.

CENTRALLY located at the end of a quiet court, this home sits on a large block of 853 square metres, with triple car lock-up garage and side access for a trailer, boat or caravan. From the street, 33 Hensley is a neat, well-maintained cottagestyle home, complete with a wide, undercover verandah detailed with wrought iron lace. Through the front security door and to your left is the lounge room with both heating and cooling (on top of ducted cooling) and ornate plaster features on the ceiling. The dining room is located directly opposite the lounge and sits on polished floorboards next to the kitchen, which has been updated and features a dishwasher and ample overhead storage. The bathroom has been renovated, with timber vanity, shower and bathtub, with separate toilet for a little extra convenience.

Think ahead for smooth settlement THE day the home you bought months earlier actually becomes yours should be happy and exciting. But what if you open the door to discover what you thought you were getting, and what is left by the seller, are two different things? Sadly, this is a common problem. Buyers who thought they were getting the garden shed and clothesline, the dishwasher or the satellite dish find them missing. There have even been cases of fireplaces being pulled out and roses dug up from the garden. The standard REIV/Law Institute of Victoria real estate contract, in widespread use, requires the seller to hand over the property to you in the same condition it was on the day you bought it, except for fair wear and tear. The seller bears the risk of loss or damage to the property until settlement. For this reason, it is important to undertake a thorough pre-settlement inspection – which you have the right to in the week leading up to, including on the day of, settlement. If you do inspect and find the property isn’t in the condition you expected, or items sold are missing, you must tell your conveyancer or

lawyer straight away so that your rights can be protected. The best way to avoid problems is to ensure everything is spelled out in your contract when you sign it. Record the property’s condition, take notes and photographs. For example, it is not enough to simply specify, say, light shades – it is important to note the style and type, in case you need to question this later on. If you are selling, tell your agent what fixtures and fittings go with the property and what you intend to take away. This can be especially important if you intend to remove plants from the garden or take away a garden shed or hothouse, for example. When your contract is drawn up, check it carefully to make sure it reflects the instructions you gave to your agent. Remember, there’s no limit to the size of the list you draw up, it’s better to be comprehensive than to have a costly argument later. If disputes arise they can always be sorted out, but usually at some expense. It’s far better, and less costly, to be very clear in advance about what stays and what goes when selling – or buying – a property.

ALBURY’S population swelled by almost 350 people with the best up and coming volleyball players from throughout Australia converging on the town. The 10th annual Under 15 Volleyball Championships started on Sunday and will culminate in the finals tomorrow at the Lauren Jackson Stadium. Organiser Michelle Slack Smith said the event, which had just received the backing of the Albury City Council for this year, 2015 and 2016, was an important springboard for players, coaches and referees looking to progress in the sport. Twenty-two teams were competing in the event , with competitors this year coming from South Australia, Victoria, NSW and the ACT. “You are looking at 300-350 coming into the town for this event,” Ms Slack Smith said. “This includes teams and supporter groups.” She said the tournament had over the years created a lot of good will and support and had become a major development event and pathway into the junior Under 17 Australian teams. Michelle said it was also a major learning event for referees and coaches looking to further their sporting career, with many of the junior referees attending the event to be mentored.

The pressure is on at the net with Alex Stewart and Taylor Weedle. “Some referees come here all week to be watched, graded and up-graded,” Michelle said. “This is more than just coming to play.

“It is a fantastic event and a good pathway to the junior teams. We love supporting them on their journey.”

O&M FOOTY2014 O&M FOOTY2013

Easter ... food, family and of course footy looked good. Livewire Lonnie Hampton and gun recruit Braydon O’ Hara were scintillating and I am expecting they will pick up where they left off. An injury-depleted Wodonga will face a team reminiscent of themselves a few years ago when they lock horns with the “Teeny Bopper Hoppers” at John Flower Oval. Dogs mentor Ben Hollands will be only too aware not to underestimate North Albury after a bold showing last week and having first-hand knowledge of what a young team can do on any given day. Easter Sunday at Myrtlefords McNamara Reserve is a tradition for many Alpine holiday revellers to attend. This year they will see former Essendon sharpshooter Scott Lucas in a cameo performance for the Saints against the Lavington Panthers. The big left-footer, who never let the opportunity to have a ping at the goals go by, will give the club a muchneeded lift. It’s a shame that Lavington’s former AFL star Justin Koschitzke would appear unlikely to play after suffering a knock to his knee in the opening round. If Easter at Myrtleford is huge ... then it’s “monstrous “ at Mulwala, as Yarrawonga play their first home game just over the river. Crowds have surpassed 9,000 people in the past and the same will be expected to show up to watch Fev and his boys take on Wang. It’s hard to see the Magpies keeping the big crowd to a hush. The Albury Tigers have released details of a trust fund set up to assist young James McQuillan who faces suspected spinal damage. For those wanting to assist here are the details BSB 012-505 Account Number 389897732 Name: Albury Tigers Club Limited in trust for James McQuillan.

Albury will try to put aside an emotional fortnight as they travel to the W.J. Finlay Oval to meet the Rovers. The entire club is still very much focussed on the healing process that fac-

LAST weekend saw the completion of the first round. There were only two games played, but it’s fair to say we learnt a little from both. Nth Albury won’t be the on-field basket case many were expecting. The young Hoppers impressed with their endeavour and tenacity, and perfected skills and decisions under immense pressure. No doubt they will have a share of forgettable games, but Akermanis and his team have some real talent to work with to get them back in the hunt in years to come. Their opponent in Wangaratta Rovers had some moments in the sun, but it was hard to rave about them as a potential top five based on that display. Down at Wangaratta, the CorowaRutherglen Roos chalked up the first win of the season for new coach Bryce Campbell. While Campbell himself was a late withdrawal from the side his team-mates were impressive and showed greater fitness to close out the game. The game was evenly poised for three quarters but Magpies coach Mark Knobel will be lamenting a missed opportunity, particularly knowing his opponent this week is last year’s premier Yarrawonga. This Easter weekend delivers us a feast of chocolates, family and good footy. Saturday at the John Foord Oval will see undefeated teams Corowa and the Wodonga Raiders attempt to extend their winning run. After collecting the wooden spoon last year, two wins in the opening two games would be a fairytale start for the boys in the red and the blue. The same can be said for the Roos, and in a game that traditionally draws a huge home crowd, Corowa will be out to impress. I don’t think there will be much in this at all, which is exciting
