MP calls for investigation of hospital funding

$50m deal ‘stinks’ By NOEL MURPHY CALL in the Ombudsman because “something stinks” about a secret $50 million Epworth Hospital deal at Waurn Ponds, says Bellarine MP Lisa Neville. The former Barwon Health chair said the Ombudsman’s office should investigate State Government’s $50 million deal for Epworth to include public health care services within its

proposed private teaching hospital at Deakin Universtiy. The Government struck the deal earlier this month after halting its tender process for a promised public hospital at Waurn Ponds. The Epworth deal involves 32 public beds, same-day surgery theatres, chemotherapy and renal dialysis services within the $277 million teaching hospital, two years behind its initially sched-

uled opening date of May 2013. The deal pushed St John of God, which recently completed a $65 million hospital expansion in Geelong, out of the running. “Ms Neville said the Ombudsman could investigate the dumped tender process, “who stopped it” and the “deals and arrangements” with Epworth,” . “Something stinks about this and I’d certainly be encouraging

the Ombudsman to have an investigation into this matter.” Ms Neville described the Government’s refusal to explain the deal on grounds of commercial confidence as “absolutely too convenient”. “There was a process that was sort of advertised, that St John of God had also submitted for, and out of the blue a letter arrived saying they were suspending the tender process and exclusively

dealing with Epworth. There’s been no answer about why Epworth from the Government at all. “They continue to claim confidentiality because of negotiations but this is taxpayer money and there was a secret process to exclusively hand over not just $50 million to Epworth but ongoing funding for public beds as well. Double Take DESPITE public admonitions of difficult council colleagues, Geelong mayor Darryn Lyons was still feeling the love last Friday. However, the object of his social media affections was someone other than girlfriend Elissa, far away in England. And didn’t Melbourne counterpart Robert Doyle, a Lyons’ mentor and former tenant, love the attention! Tweeted Cr Lyons: “Going to meet my mate @LordMayorMelb in Melbourne”. To which Robert Doyle longingly replied: “And your mate is looking forward to it!” Metro media declared it a “bromance”. Cr Andy Richards, eat your heart out. PUN OF the week goes to Penny’s Pine, late of Bridge St, Newtown.

The factory went up in smoke in January, bringing to an end a local furniture institution. It’s still cleaning up, it seems, gauging by the heavily discounted, everything-mustgo, cash/EFT-only trading at Fyansford over the weekend. It was advertised as, you guessed, a fire sale. TWO new Grovedale residents have brought with them possibly the world’s smartest dog. Apparently poochy had a barking problem, so was fitted with a special collar emitting a light electric shock to deter unwanted woofing. Very effective, the owners were assured. However, technology was no match for the intellectual advantage of part-poodle heritage. The clever mutt soon worked out a frequency and tone of barks

it could use without triggering the device. If only the mongrel used its powers for good instead of evil. CHRIS Scott’s lips were about as tight as Andrew Mackie’s hamstring when the Cats coach was asked at this week’s media conference whether the troublesome muscle had been scanned. “I’m not at liberty to answer that question,” Scott smiled. “Balmey (football operations manager Neil Balme) doesn’t like me to say because then he gets 25 calls about the results of the scan. I’m scared of Balmey. I’m not going to answer the question.” Must be something Scott picked up as a coach - fear certainly wasn’t part of his playing profile.

Shame to earn focus of police By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN

GEELONG’S history of public violence and drunkenness has earned the city inclusion in a national police operation for Easter. Victoria Police will join with policing jurisdictions across Australia and New Zealand in Operation Unite, targetting drunks, violence and anti-social behaviour. Operation commander Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney said police intelligence had identified the area as having a high incidence of offending. “Alcohol-related violence and tp anti-social behaviour is not acceptable at any time of the year,”

Assistant Commissioner Blayney said. “Police focus on these issues all year round but this operation is an opportunity to highlight the ongoing action taken by police each and every weekend. “We know people may be heading out to let their hair down or head away for a break over the long weekend and we will be out in force to detect and deter any public order offences.” Asst Comm Blayney said police needed the help of the community to create a safer environment. “We know excessive drinking can lead to serious consequences,

including violent crime and antisocial behaviour. Take responsibility for your actions, look out for your friends and drink in moderation. Everyone has the right to feel safe and enjoy their night out.” People drunk in public face $577 fines. Last year’s December operation in Victoria produced 76 arrests, 460 penalty notices and detection of 22 licensing offences. Asst Comm Blayney said police would be highly visible, particularly around licensed venues and entertainment precincts. The operation runs in Victoria from 6pm Saturday to 6am Sunday.

Chinese investors visit hunting ‘huge returns’ A DELEGATION from China’s largest property development group heard about local investment opportunities this week. The group was pitched projects including student accommodation developments, residential towers, a mineral spa centre, a Yarra St pier and convention centre and establishing a Chinatown in Geelong. City of Greater Geelong hosted the PKU Property Development Group delegation, with members representing a variety of Chinese real estate interests. The delegation also heard private

investment proposals from Barwon Paper Mills’ Colleen Person, aquaculture business founder Scott Grierson and property developer Jim Ramsay. Mayor Darryn Lyons told the delegation Geelong would take on a “critical role” as Melbourne reached its growth limits. “We’ll deliver much of Victoria’s growth,” Cr Lyons said. “Student accommodation is going through the roof with the increase of Chinese students studying at Deakin.” Delegation head Liang Naizhong said his group was actively seeking international development opportunities.

“We are interested in education and property development. We want to know more about the Chinatown proposal.” The delegation came to Victoria following a State Government trade mission to China in October. Cr Lyons told the delegates that as an international businessman he understood the requirements of overseas investors, including “huge returns”. “Our message to the delegates is that Geelong is open for business. Geelong has enormous potential as a city ripe for innovative property development.” Geelong is already on the Chinese

investment radar. Chinese-backed development company ICD Property last year snapped up a 115-hectare Fyansford Green residential project to develop 2000 houses on a former cement works and quarry. Darcy Jarman’s Tim Darcy said Chinese investors had been active in the region for some time. “They’re looking at more-significant opportunities now and the Chinese are an emerging sector within the property market in Australia,” he said. “There’s a swell of money coming out of China and they see Australia as a safe haven. Investors have been more active in the major centres but are starting to spread their wings further.”

AVALON Airport is slashing up to 70 per cent from its landing fees to lure general aviation after the exit of Qantas maintenance operations. Airport chief Justin Giddings said cutting fees would attract more aircraft of all sizes. “Whether you’re flying a Cessna or an Airbus, Avalon welcomes you,” he said. The airport has shed 300 jobs in recent weeks and 1000 over the past decade. Late last week Avalon signed a deal for a Chinese airline to begin operating flights within 18 months.

FUNDRAISING for a wind-powered tourism attraction proposed for Geelong’s waterfront will begin at a sustainability event in Eastern Park this weekend. “MAJOR” defence contractors have visited Geelong to hear about its pitch for a $10 billion contract to build armoured combat vehicles. Mayor Darryn Lyons said the contractors heard about the city’s infrastructure advantages, spoke to local businesses with relevant skills and went on an “aerial tour” of the city as it vied to host the military’s Land 400 project.

HIGH-PROFILE Geelong Facebook blogger Jason Trickey has been sentenced to six months jail for assaulting a woman. Two months of the six-month sentence were suspended for two years in Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. A seven-day sentence for criminal damage was to be served concurrently. Trickey planned to appeal but remained in custody when the Independent went to press. The matter had been adjourned after mentions in court mid-January and again in February. The 41-year-old self-styled social media guru and IT consultant had contested the charges. Trickey was stabbed and bashed when up to seven youths allegedly attacked him in his home on Thompson Rd, North Geelong, earlier this year.

E-slum fear as net speed ‘manipulated’ By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN LEOPOLD broadband customers fear their internet speeds are being manipulated because of capacity restraints at local exchanges. Cameron Horne said his ADSL2 connection sped up after he complained to Telstra but fell back to lower speeds after a few weeks. A friend who worked for the telecommunications giant told him his line showed as registering a fault, Mr Horne said. “So I rang Telstra and they claimed there was no fault on my line but then the speed increases for a while.

“This has been going on for two years now. When I complain the speed increases but then it slows down again.” Mr Horne said his fluctuating usual speeds of between two and four megabits compared to ward councillor Rod Macdonald who enjoyed more than seven on the other side of their street. Mr Horne contacted Cr Macdonald after reading his call in the Independent for feedback on local internet experiences. Last week’s Independent reported how property investor Adrian Ikin feared losing tenants from his student accommodation because he was un-

able to obtain broadband connection. Cr Macdonald said the discrepancies highlighted Geelong’s inadequate internet infrastructure. “I’ve been blown away by the despair of residents, including a number who have no internet at all. “Others report patchy connections, where it slows, peaks or drops out, leaving them totally frustrated and driving them to distraction. “The waiting lists are that long they’re just not going to get connected and it’s happening all over Geelong. “It’s shocking – we’ll become an E-slum.”

A WATER pipeline will prepare the ground for almost 800 farming jobs north of Geelong, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson. She said $4.2 million in federal funding for the eight-kilometre pipeline would kick-start the 3000-hecatare Golden Plains Food Production and Employment Precinct, expected to pump out $516 million in produce annually in 10 years.

Northern suburbs ‘worst’

“There were some distinct differences in the profile of motor vehicle theft linked to socio-economic status,” the study found. “The majority of vehicles stolen in low socio-economic areas did not have an engine immobiliser fitted and twothirds were aged 10 years or more. “Large passenger vehicles were generally the most popular theft targets in the most-disadvantaged areas.”

RACV insurance general manager Paul Northey said Norlane and central Geelong had the highest number of local theft claims. Mr Northey said the figures showed that mornings and afternoons were the highest-risk times. “Our data shows that most cars were reported stolen between 6am and 6pm. This should be a reminder to local residents to ensure that they always

From page 1 “The taxpayer has already given some $12 million in federal funds and $3 million in state funds. What’s happened to that money? “Why hasn’t Epworth proceeded to date? Why is the government backing away from its promise?” Epworth’s board declined to comment on the grounds it was an applicant in the tender process. Health Minister David Davis said no deal had been done with Epworth. “There is a strict process in place regarding the exclusive negotiation process. The exclusive negotiation process will commence shortly with the issue of tender documentation to Epworth,” he said. “Epworth will be required to provide a proposal to the state (that) demonstrates value for money.” Mr Davis said “probity and legal advice” confirmed the state followed proper process “at all times” during the procurement process. “The Victorian Coalition Government will deliver its election commitment in full. The project was funded with a clear capital allocation in the 2013/2014 budget.”

Rider’s shock return from horror injuries By NOEL MURPHY MAN versus electricity rarely has a happy outcome, as the scars on Brett Coleman can attest. The Geelong anaesthetist came to the pointy end of this painful equation when he rode his mountain bike into a fallen high-voltage line at Anglesea last year. Fourteen months later, minus half an ear and with scars across 20 per cent of his body, Dr Coleman’s back in the saddle and counting his blessings. He can’t forget the months

of painful rehab or the shock his young family suffered but counts as bonuses the support he received, the extra friends he made and the new sports pursuits he discovered as a result of his accident. “My major burns were to my left ear, a large part of my upper back, wrists, fingers, both upper legs and the sole of my left foot,” Dr Coleman said. “I was lucky I was clicked into my pedals when I hit the line because the electricity channelled out through the cleat on my left foot.

“Exit wounds are usually large blast wounds and I’d have likely lost my foot had it been on the ground. Instead, I had a deep but relatively small burn on my sole.” Dr Coleman has no recollection of riding into the 12,700-volt line as it hung head-high across a bush track near Eumerella scout camp. Found lying on the ground more than an hour later, he was airlifted to The Alfred hospital where he woke 18 hours later. Dr Coleman was out of action for the next three months before

retuning to work as an anaesthetist and running a half-marathon later in the year. He then took up mountain bike riding, joined Surfcoast Trail Group and now classifies himself a “true MTB geek”. A few months ago he rode through the area where he was injured competing in a Surfcoast 100K. “I felt like giving the power pole the bird as I came past it on the last lap but I was too tired and might have fallen off.”

Far-left attacks union rally, Trades Hall boss Tim’s bow tie to a folk hero

By NOEL MURPHY

By NOEL MURPHY

DRAWING A LONG BOW: Geelong Trades Hall boss Tim Gooden in his Picture: REG RYAN medieval archer’s regalia. 118697

HE’S not quite Robin Hood, robbing the rich to give to the poor, even if some think it’s the role of a union leader like Tim Gooden. But the Geelong Trades Hall boss’s fascination with mediaeval archery certainly dates back to the day of the great Sherwood Forest folk hero. Mr Gooden is a member of Black Griffens Traditional Archers, a Geelong subsidiary of Leongatha Mediaeval Society and named for the elite Welsh Black Archers who fought with the Prince of Wales’ bodyguard in the 100-year war against the French. “The war bow’s traditional form is 70-pound, mine’s 100-pound in keeping with the times,” Mr Gooden explained. “The archers of England are an interesting social dynamic, from Edward I to Henry VIII. “Edward III ordered peasants to become archers - they were all ordered to practice after church on Sunday. They were the best in the 100 Year War.” “The French ruling class wouldn’t come at training the peasants - they were scared they’d turn on them whereas England had a paid army.” Mr Gooden likes to point out archery’s connection with the famous two-fingered salute, a practice dating back to the Battle of Agincourt 600 years ago. “If the French caught the English archers they’d chop their bow fingers off. The twofingered salute was the English waving two fingers at the French.”

Our World 1126956-CB14-14

A UNION jobs rally in central Geelong last week was a “fraud”, according to socialists The far-left Socialist Equality Party (SEP) accused rally organiser and Geelong Trades Hall boss Tim Gooden of playing a “key role” in “helping destroy hundreds of jobs” at Geelong’s Ford plant and attacked his support of Labor policies. Mr Gooden, who led the rally, introduced state MP James Merlino as the “next deputy premier” but the SEP criticised Mr Merlino’s ministerial role in the previous Labor government and its “pro-business agenda of slashing social spending while presiding over huge job losses”. Will Marshall, writing at the World Socialist Website, accused the union movement of actively orchestrating “ruthless restructuring measures against the working class”. He claimed the working class could not defend jobs and living standards “within the framework of the trade unions”. Geelong workers must develop their own independent forms of organisation, he wrote. Mr Gooden dismissed the far-left attack, describing the SEP as a “spin-off of a spinoff of the old communist party”. “There’s about four blokes in it and I think they’re all well into the 60s,” he said. The SEP attack coincided with a National Institute of Economic and Industry Research study claiming Geelong would suffer 5000 job losses over the next three years as major manufacturing plants closed, with the economic impact felt across the region. The Trades Hall-led Jobs for Geelong rally comprised about 400 chanting members and supporters of various unions demanding more state and federal government help for local workers.

Funds secured for spa project CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS ANZAC DAY MARCHES AND COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES FRIDAY 25 APRIL ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand forces landing in Gallipoli in 1915. It is a day that we remember all Australians who served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Support our brave and courageous servicemen and women marching in the ANZAC Day marches. Or attend a commemorative service being held at war memorials and RSL Sub Branches in Geelong and on the Bellarine Peninsula. Members of the public that wish to lay wreaths may do so after the official wreath laying ceremonies. GEELONG ANZAC DAY SERVICES Honouring the first landing at Gallipoli in 1915, a pre dawn commemorative service will take place at the Peace Memorial in Johnstone Park at 4.15am. The Alpha Company 8/7 RVR’s Australian Army will hold a commemorative service at the Boer War Memorial on the corner of Kilgour Street and Latrobe Terrace at 6.30am. A wreath laying ceremony at the Geelong RSL Sub Branch at 50 Barwon Heads Road Belmont, will take place at 9.30am.

A MINERAL springs development is a step closer to opening at Geelong’s Eastern Beach. Mayor Darryn Lyons this week announced funding for a feasibility study into developing a “world-class” facility east of Eastern Beach’s swimming enclosure. State Government committed $125,000 to match council’s contribution to the $250,000 study into the spa and “wellness” centre. “To have mineral springs right in the heart of a major city is rare. We have an enormous opportunity on our hands,” Cr Lyons said. “The Geelong springs were hugely popular in the late 1800s

and early 1900s. I’d love to see the springs rejuvenated.” Cr Lyons said the spa and wellness industry was growing rapidly worldwide. “It’s big business and Geelong is perfectly positioned to capitalise on it. “It’s an attraction that would help set us apart from other destinations. Relaxing in a world-class mineral spa and wellbeing centre while overlooking one of the only north-facing bays in Australia sounds like a perfect holiday to me.” Cr Lyons suggested the facility could capitalize on cruise ship passengers disembarking at a new pier proposed nearby at the end of Yarra St.

Cr Lyons said the spa centre would be worth up to $20 million annually to Geelong’s economy. “We’ve had plenty of private interest and this study will lay the groundwork and get us to the stage of seeking expressions of interest from developers.” Geelong’s council and State Government have been working on the spa centre proposal for several years. A 2011 Government report said a “Geelong Waterfront Bathhouse” development could attract up to 250,000 visitors a year. The report identified eight mineral springs in the Geelong region, three on the shores of Corio Bay.

Police out in force over Easter

Roads targeted THREE major road safety campaigns will operate across the Geelong region during the “high risk” Easter and Anzac holiday period. Police will run operations Soteria and Crossroads while the State Emergency Service will operate Driver Reviver stations around the state. Police will trial Australia’s first Ranger camera during the 13-day Easter road enforcement campaign. Police with the portable camera can detect motorists using mobile phones or without seatbelts up to 700 metres away. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said police from Highway Patrol, general duties and specialist areas

would saturate Victorian roads. “History tells us we experience significant trauma on our roads during the Easter holiday break. As a community, we need to do more to reduce the pain and suffering. “We know that during this time people will be travelling to see family and friends, they will be on unfamiliar roads, driving long distances with distractions in the car. These factors are what result in terrifying collisions. “My message is plan your trip, take regular rest breaks and stay alert and focused. “We’ll be doing what we can to ensure that people behave responsibly. TAC chief Janet Dore said quick fixes like winding down

a window or grabbing a drivethrough coffee were inadequate to stave off drowsiness. “If you’re experiencing drowsiness while driving, it means you’re already falling asleep and the only way to avoid falling asleep at the wheel is to pull over and have a powernap.” Ms Dore urged drowsy drivers to use the Driver Reviver stations as safe locations for 15-minute “powernaps”. Six people lost their lives on Victorian roads over the past two Easter long weekends, she said. “We want everyone to reach their destination safely and that means planning your trip and ensuring you have had a good night’s sleep before getting behind the wheel.”

Awards add Impetus to youth work A DIVERSE range of people and organisations have earned recognition for their achievements across various endeavours affecting young people in the Geelong region and beyond. Organisers said City of Greater Geelong’s seventh annual Impetus Youth Awards attracted 125 nominations, “demonstrating the outstanding contribution of young people in our region”. Some of the winners were young people, while others included organisations and individuals working on youth issues and programs. Mayor Darryn Lyons helped announce the winners of the 12 categories last week. The award categories and their winners were: active achieve-

A “massive failure of policy and imagination” will deliver Geelong only 27 of 80 new temporary prison beds for regional Victoria, according to the opposition.

Shadow corrections minister Martin Pakula said Geelong would still have overcrowded police station cells. “We have a situation in Geelong where crime is going up, prisons are overflowing and our

hard-working police are babysitting prisoners instead of tackling and reducing crime.” Coalition MP David Koch said the beds were an “important, immediate boost to capacity in Victoria’s corrections system”.

Science teacher backs legend:

A FRESH report of a big cat sighting has lent further weight to the Otways panther legend. Geelong science teacher Jamie Saunders told the Independent he believed he spotted a panther while driving along a dirt track at night near Hordern Vale last month. “I was with my brother-inlaw, it was 9.30pm and we passed something just on the right. We just saw the back of it and its tail, it was caught in headlights,” the Kardinia College physics teacher said. “We both looked at each other, ‘What the hell was that?’

I reversed back but it had disappeared. “I really thought it looked like a big cat. We both thought it was something very odd. “I thought it was a cat because of its tail, which was kind of curled, S-shaped. It had a stubby end and was the same thickness its full length. “The size of the thing was big. We thought the tail was at least a metre long. “We were in a VW Transporter and quite high up, so we had a good view of this big thing and thought it was something quite unusual.” Mr Saunders’ report follows multiple claims of local big-cat

sightings in recent years. Researchers believe 19th Century acclimatisation societies imported the animals, possibly Asian black leopards. “It didn’t strike me as, say, a wallaby. It was dark-grey coloured and looked muddy and bedraggled, which made sense to me - it’s a swampy area there,” Mr Saunders said. “We reversed back to where we spotted it, marked it with a stick and on the way back out I looked around for paw prints, fur or anything but there were no markings of any sort anywhere but you could see little trails where things went up the bank.” Letters, page 16

Uni denies role in lawyers glut By NOEL MURPHY DEAKIN University has rejected reports linking its enrolment practices with a glut of laywers on Australia’s labour market. Finance media reports said the university’s undergraduate law student enrolments had grown at almost three times the rate of other courses. But Professor Mirko Bagaric denied that students with law degrees were in over-supply. “The feedback from our students regarding their capacity to secure employment is excellent,” Deakin’s head of law said. “There’s no evidence of an

oversupply of law students, given the transferability of the skills and knowledge acquired as a result of a law degree to a range of other industries. “It is no coincidence, for example, that there are more former lawyers in federal parliament than from any other profession.” The Australian Financial Review reported that Australian universities had aggressively recruited law students despite a shortage of jobs for them, citing Deakin’s growth in undergraduate enrolments. Prof Bagaric said Deakin law graduates scored “higher than all other law school graduates”

across a criteria of knowledge, including ethics, professionalism and research skills. The law school focussed on preparing students to become commercial lawyers with high level problem-solving skills, he said. “These graduates contribute to the community and economy at levels well-above the cost of the government contribution for the law degree. From a value perspective, economists would probably say this is excellent value as they are highly educated and able when they graduate.”

Thomas McGuane said Rotary Club of Highton’s annual Star Search was “one of his greatest achievements to date”. “It was such an amazing time for me, where I could develop and hone my performing abilities and share my gift with the people of Geelong,” said the vocal category winner. “Now I have grown to be recognised in my local community as well Geelong society and would encourage others to participate in this life-changing event.” Thomas said Star Search was ideal for any young musician seeking experience in a “professional environment”. Audition registrations for vocalists and instruments have opened at starsearch.net.au. This year’s Star Search grand final will have $5000 in prize money up for grabs.

Letters Council’s (la)goon show REGARDING the proposed floating Geelong Christmas tree, obviously Geelong councillors are unaware of the differences between a lagoon, as in Rio de Janeiro’s lagoon, and a bay, as in Corio Bay. A lagoon is separated from the sea by low sand dunes, is generally shallow and is not tidal. Corio Bay is open to Port Phillip Bay, is definitely tidal and is definitely not shallow. The elected representatives of local wards should remember an adage: Those who accept without detailed research cause problems. Judith Fisher South Geelong

Park volunteers waiting I WISH to state that members of Ocean Grove Park Committee and volunteers have repeatedly been praised and thanked for their wonderful and consistent efforts over the years with maintenance, general upkeep and improvements, together with many hours organising fundraising events annually. I personally wrote one such thank you and acknowledgement to be read out at the carols evening and the park committee treasurer has a copy on file. My daily routine consists of picking up litter in and around the park and I see others doing the same. Membership forms give people the opportunity to volunteer their time in a variety of ways; for example, working bees, Tranquility Fair, car boot sales and letterbox drops. Dozens of locals like myself are waiting to get the phone call to assist. Rest assured, volunteers are ready to help. W Cover Ocean Grove

Black cat crossed path TWO more big-black-cat believers are now in our midst since Adrian and Carolyne Booth took a drive from Torquay to Aire River. After turning off the Great Ocean Road toward their destination they were enjoying the drive through our beautiful native bush when they were confronted by something that wasn’t native. A big cat, about 60cm tall, was standing beside the road. It was completely black, sleek and had a fine physique. As they slowed down it leaped sprightly into the undergrowth and completely disappeared. They both

See the lights and branch out with tree MUCH has been reported recently about the proposed Geelong Christmas tree and its potential to draw in tourists. At Christmas, which is short-lived, many activities draw the attention of tourists and locals. Let’s face it, a Christmas tree is a Christmas tree whether big or small. I suggest we do need a big tree, one that would be fun and draw tourists and locals alike all year around. I propose a larger traffic light tree like the one erected near London’s Canary Wharf in 1998 but since relocated. French sculptor Pierre Vivant created the tree, which was very popular even though it was in the middle of a roundabout. I believe such a sculpture would be fun and colourful although I think we could find a better location in Geelong. It would obviously look better at night, which also applies to the proposed Christmas tree. The original sculpture was eight metres high and had 75 sets of lights. In Geelong with Darryn Lyons as mayor we could do better. What’s better than one tree - perhaps a small plantation of trees? Brian Thompson Geelong West agree it was a sight they’ll always remember. Has anyone else seen one recently? Melva Stott Anglesea

Other people’s money I THINK Mayor Darryn Lyons is saying that if we want something the cost of it doesn’t matter, we don’t need to know about that because it’s just ratepayer’s money. If that is the message then we made a mistake electing him mayor. We’ll all be ruined. Peter Linaker Ocean Grove

Hands off our ABC THE ABC is the people’s service. It plays a crucial role in informing and educating Australians on a wide range of issues and subjects, promotes community discussion through its news

the sort of biased coverage we see elsewhere in commercial media along with programs that cater only for the mainstream. Every organisation can be improved but an unfettered ABC, free to scrutinise and question, is a vital element of our special Australian democracy. We must be prepared to defend it in order to preserve both the ABC and our democracy. Leo Kelly Portarlington

JUST WHAT WE NEED: French sculptor Pierre Vivant’s traffic lights tree in London.

and current affairs, supports Australian drama as well as programming for children and provides information to over 40 countries through the Australia Network. Of course, ABC current affairs on radio and TV also scrutinises the performance of all our governments - a reality that some, including our Prime Minister and his ministers, find uncomfortable and inconvenient. Despite Mr Abbott’s attacks on ABC political coverage, two independent reviews recently reported that its programs were substantially of a high standard and impartial. There are two effective ways of reducing ABC services to our community: cutting its budget and threatening privatisation. The Prime Minister promised before the last election there would be no cuts to the ABC or SBS yet it seems likely this will become a broken promise. There’s also no doubt that more-conservative viewpoints in our society would love to hand the ABC over to private enterprise, which would give us

I DON’T think that too many people are shedding tears at the Abbott Government’s decision to treat family reunion applications by recently-arrived seaborne asylum seekers as a low priority. They are people who have effectively bought their way into this island continent. Seaborne asylum seekers have already jumped the queue while those who have applied for asylum visas, in the normal fashion, languish in refugee camps in Third World countries. These people should be our highest priority. Enough is enough - the well of human compassion is running dry. Michael J Gamble Belmont

Climate change advantages I GET frustrated with the debate on who is to blame for possible climate change. As I receive most of my information from the media, I must apply logic to sort fact from fiction. I believe the climate is changing and the cause has a number of possibilities. Most likely the world’s population doubling in the past 50 years is a major cause. Taking steps to reduce our contributions, such as carbon dioxide, would help but only slow the problem. The most important action required is to plan how we are going to live in a warmer climate. Nature will adjust to a number of changes, an example of which is the barrier reef spreading south as the sea warms. In Siberia the summer will be long enough to grow larger areas of grain. If we put as much effort into planning projects to take advantage of the possible changes as we do into blaming each other we would have an interesting future Ray Harrison Bell Post Hill

IT WAS the film that forever changed the way the world thought about surfing. Albert Falzon’s innovative 1972 work Morning of the Earth helped convey the surfing lifestyle as a surfing cinema classic that still evokes the unique spirit of surf culture and music. A brand new Australian film, Spirit of Akasha, recalls the Morning of the Earth ethos as it blends music with the surfing of world champions such as Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Beau Young. With Australian surf film-maker Andrew Kidman as its producer, the new film had as a mentor Falzon himself. Kidman was rapt to work on the film. “Doing a sequel to Morning of the Earth was a massive challenge and honour,” he enthused. “It gave us all an incredible window into the surfing culture at the time coupled with great music by the best Aussie musos. “Following it up was such an interesting idea when we started thinking about it. We knew there was no point trying to remake it but we wanted to do something that honours in the spirit of it.” Kidman said Spirit of Akasha had collected an array of contemporary artists to recreate the breadth and

THE CLAIMED abilities of psychics, mediums and clairvoyants to delve into the mysterious afterlife might leave some people cold but Donna Abrahams begs to differ. Abrahams said she had been talking with spirits since she was a child with an ability that could bring great comfort to people grieving the loss of loved ones. She also turns her hand to predictive, crystal, face and phone readings and even claims to be an animal psychic. With her own TV show, a gong as Victorian psychic of the year and more than a few run-ins with ghosts, Abrahams is bringing her show to Corio’s Shell Club next month. “Basically, it’s all done on stage. Everyone who purchases a ticket has a raffle ticket stapled to it,” she said. “One of my girls draws out a raffle ticket and they get the option of a medium reading or a psychic crystal reading. “A medium reading is a chat to a past loved one and I encourage them to bring a photo to tune straight into that energy. “A psychic crystal reading is like a predictive psychic reading on the individual.”

HIGHER education’s not what it used to be these days. Take the Bachelor of Arts at Deakin University, for instance. Who would expect it to come with tomato, cheese, oregano, onion and garlic rather than a mortarboard and robe? That’s right, it’s a pizza, not a degree - and one of several academic culinary pursuits now available at Hub Bistro, in Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus. The Botanist, The Statistician, The Magic Mayor, The Dean of Mexico and The Professor are some of the other tertiary-level pizzas available at this uber-funky new bistro-bar-café. Part of Geelong’s Big Group - the company of Geelong Mayor

Darryn Lyons and which oversees Elephant and Castle Hotel, Pizzas with Attitude, The Eureka and Home House - Hub Bistro has proven an instant success with students. And more of the same is expected when it opens this week to the public. It’s not all clever pizzas, though. Hub Bistro has a goodly range of entrees, salads, “full-throttle” pub grub plus special nights for “tight a..e” burgers, seafood, pot and parmi deals and “wine down” Fridays. Throw in nightly theme events and specials and Hub Bistro has all the makings of an eclectic and colourful social communal space for students, staff and the public

to enjoy modern pub food and great music with beer, cider, wine and mineral water on tap, indoors or outside. “I’ve been really excited to invest in growing the future of the Geelong region and Deakin and as mayor I want to keep investing in Geelong,” Cr Lyons says. “The prices offer fantastic value for money. It’s not necessarily a money-maker for us but another investment in a quality atmosphere venue with bands, DJs and really making it a student-oriented hub for food beverage and entertainment.” Hub Bistro is on level two, Building JB, Deakin University Waurn Ponds, phone 5247 9209 or email hubbistro@deakin.edu.au.

New premises, same service for Aus Dent’s customers in South Geelong GEELONG’S unique paintless dent repair service, Aus Dent, has moved to bigger and brighter premises. But customers won’t have far to go because the award-winning service is still in South Geelong, offering a cost-effective way of repairing vehicle dents and dings that have not cracked or chipped paintwork. Aus Dent has serviced the Geelong area for more than 10 years, getting the job done right the first time with no sanding, filling or expensive paintwork. Paintless dent removal leaves vehicles with the original finish, so there’s no mismatched paintwork or repair marks. Aus Dent’s quality trained technicians are masters of the system of “massaging” out the affected area to immediately improve your car’s resale value. Paintless dent removal is also faster than conventional body shop methods and most repairs can be finished in a couple of hours. Geelong manager Gary LeGuern says Aus Dent saves time and money. Aus Dent Geelong offers free quotes and a quality guarantee. Aus Dent is at factory 2/14 Birkett Plc, South Geelong, phone 5223 1128 or 0414 638 749 or visit ausdent.com.au.

IndySport Sides ‘making history’ bite

On the

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG coach Chris Scott certainly has a sense of occasion. This week he didn’t brush off questions about the Easter Monday blockbuster against Hawthorn as just another game. “It’s always a bit different for the really big games,” Scott observed. “Most good clubs pride themselves on their consistency of process and we’re no different to an extent but we do embrace the big occasions. “We really value players who can stand up on the big stage against the best opposition and this will be a big stage and they will be very good opposition. “A standalone game on Easter Monday at the MCG - I can’t imagine even the impartial football follower wanting for a bigger occasion to come and see two good teams go hard at each other. “Internally, we’re really looking forward to it.” Scott also has a sense of place in history. “Taking an external view, we’re all just so proud to be part of this era and this rivalry. I can’t imagine a better time to be a Geelong or Hawthorn supporter,” he declared. “We’ll all look back on this era and recognise it as one of the great times in football history.” Geelong’s defensive effort against West Coast was timely, Scott said. “Our defensive effort is the cornerstone of our game and it really helps the way we attack as well. “It’s a bit naive to say we pri-

oritise one over the other - the two are closely linked. “But particularly against West Coast, who have shown they can score very quickly early on in the season, to limit not only their scoring but to limit their entries particularly after quarter time was a really strong defensive effort. “And it was good practice against the side coming up because no one uses the ball better or attacks better than Hawthorn.” Scott warned the hard tag would most likely come under closer scrutiny from umpires this weekend. “Stuff is missed in the game all the time, it’s an incredibly hard game to umpire. “One of the pleasing developments in the umpiring this year is that the umpires are being encouraged to call the things they see but not to guess. “One of the cues the umpires have used in the past, which I think is good policy, is when a player turns around and faces his direct opponent off the ball and puts his arms around him that should be an automatic free kick.” Scott said he would be judicious in the way Geelong’s own tagger, Cameron Guthrie, was used against Hawthorn, with its fleet of midfielders. “There might be one we want to lock down but we tend not to be a side that goes absolutely defensively against any player. “We’ll take a step back and have a look at it and decide on balance what we need to do versus what they will probably do against us.”

Bend it like Boyar: Warriors post another NPL win By Josip Zilic A BENDING Michael Boyar shot in the dying minutes has helped North Geelong Warriors to an important 2-1 victory over Bulleen Lions in National Premier League Victoria football. Both sides started strongly at Elcho Park, with Bulleen’s Joseph Katebian scoring the first goal at the 22-minute mark after a 15-metre run. Warriors playmaker Vito Cichello levelled the scores at 27 minutes with a long-range shot into the top left corner. North Geelong then turned up the pressure, with Lions captain Matteo Ballan given marching orders for

The Lions lost intensity after halftime as the Warriors built further momentum, hitting the cross bar twice and having a goal cancelled out when Reha Kurul was called for a dubious offside. The Warriors broke through again as full-time approached when Boyar bent a shot through. North Geelong coach Ante Skoko was happy with the win. “It worked out in the end. We stuck to the shape and didn’t rush it,” he said. North Geelong next faces Kingston City on 26 April. Also last Saturday, the Warriors’

Both reinforced the need to understand the club’s entry into NPL was a three-year venture of building the Warriors brand. The following day the Warriors junior sides took on Whittlesea Ranges, with the under-12s winning 2-1, the under-13s 2-0, under-14s 3-1; under15s losing 1-2 loss, under-16s drawing 2-2 and the under-18s winning 6-0. The next juions matches are against Moreland Zebras at home on 27 April.

EASTER’S looking good for fishing around the Geelong area. Early-morning high tides for Corio Bay’s innerharbour should suit fishing for snapper or flathead at North Shore rocks with blue or whitebait. Surf rods are generally required here for the long casts needed. Geelong’s waterfront between Cunningham Pier and Royal Geelong Yacht Club should be worthwhile for a variety of species on soft plastics, particularly Gulp turtleback worms in the Pumpkin Green pattern. Boat anglers could try the outer-harbour spoil grounds for snapper and flathead on soft plastics, while bait anglers using pippies could bag a few whiting. The same area has been producing some quality salmon on lure. Squid were caught in the last week along the Bellarine Peninsula from Hermsley to Queenscliff on the inshore grass beds. Small jigs were required. Whiting numbers were down but quality fish were still caught from St Leonards to Queenscliff. Fresh bait and fishing at first light helped. Swan Bay’s entrance was productive, with berley tempting flathead, whiting, garfish and salmon. Anglers fishing after dark over Easter should be in the mix to catch gummy sharks, especially if using fresh squid or salmon fillets. Kingfish could also be an option inside The Rip and offshore. Knife jigs and live baits have been getting results. The Barwon River estuary has been fishing well, with elephant fish common and small mulloway also caught on squid and fresh fish fillets. Soft plastics have been catching trevally and salmon. Salmon have been well spread out in the surf between Fairhaven and Wye River. Last weekend after heavy easterlies the water was average, taking us a number of moves to find clean water at Grassy Creek where we were flat out for three hours on salmon to 1.5kg. Down Portland way, albacore and bluefin tuna have been taking small skirted lures and bibbed Rapala X Raps, with the biggest numbers caught in water 400m or more deep. Good numbers of redfin have been available from the Barwon River upstream of Buckley Falls on small bibbed lures. The best action has been in the middle of the day. The river also produced fantastic carp fishing from Queen’s Park to Shannon Ave bridge for anglers using berley and unweighted bread or corn baits. Wurdee Boluc Reservoir should have big but hard-to-catch redfin available for Easter anglers. Moorabool Reservoir is low but the fishing has been productive with scrub worms or small freshwater yabbies for big redfin and for trout to almost 2kg on mudeyes. Send reports and photos to info@raylongtackle.com. au or visit Brian at Ray Long’s Fishing World, 105 Shannon Ave, Manifold Heights.
