High emotions By JESSE GRAHAM IT was an evening of high emotions and raised voices at the Yarra Ranges Community Cabinet last week. Premier Denis Napthine and his ministers assembled at Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre at 5.30pm on Monday 14 April for the meeting, which saw the centre’s room quickly reach capacity. Representatives of numerous local groups and Yarra Ranges Councillors were all in attendance, and members of the community were able to pose questions or make statements to the ministers. Of the 26 questions posed to the ministers, the majority were regarding Tecoma McDonald’s and VCAT, the Leadbeater’s Possum and logging and TAFE funding in the outer east. Many questioners took aim at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) over the McDonald’s decision. However, Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Attorney-General Robert Clark both defended the VCAT decision, and said that the body was merely working within the confines of the law. Questioners asked the government about the possibility of removing VCAT from the equation, and having planning decisions rest solely on the council, but Mr Guy said this could cut both ways. “If you removed the appeal mechanism, you could find it comes back to backfire, if the council makes a decision that is completely inappropriate,” he said. Mr Clark suggested that, to prevent situations like Tecoma McDonald’s, planning schemes must be altered, as they were this week with the introduction of C126. C126 is an amendment to the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme that discourages drive-through facilities in some areas of the Dandenongs. However, many members of the audience did not accept Mr Clark’s answer, and yelled over the top of him, accusing him of hiding behind the former government and saying the change was too late. Meanwhile, the government’s release of the Leadbeater’s Possum Advisory Group (LPAG) report and recommendations were criticised by many anti-logging group members, who said the recommendations would not do enough to save the endangered species.
Minister for Climate Change and Environment Ryan Smith and Minister for Agriculture and Food Security Peter Walsh both said the report and the government’s response was a “big step forward” in protecting the endangered animal. However, questions and statements persisted throughout the evening, attacking the government on its stance towards the timber industry, with raised voices often interrupting both questions and answers. Former Yarra Ranges Mayor Tim Heenan also took the microphone at the event, and asked about the progress of Warburton’s Natural Gas project, which he said was promised before the last state election. Dr Napthine responded to Mr Heenan and said the government was re-tendering the process of getting gas to the town, due to a lack of interest in its initial tendering of the project. Healesville resident Robyn Johnson also put her thoughts to the ministers, asking about the potential of realigning regional boundaries, which currently place the Yarra Ranges in the Melbourne Metropolitan area. Dr Napthine said the government had been in discussion with the Yarra Ranges Council to assess how to re-classify the area, so that initiatives such as the Regional Growth Fund would be available to residents. Meanwhile, TAFE questions were deflected by Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling, who said that funding had increased under the Coalition and that more students were studying in fields guaranteed to get jobs. The final question of the evening came from Yarra Ranges Councillor Noel Cliff, who asked for an update on the Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO), which he said left people “stuffed”. Dr Napthine and Mr Guy both responded, and said that common-sense should be applied to the BMO, and that some resolution to the current situation was expected to be seen in May. The meeting ended half an hour overtime, at 7.30pm, and the ministers were ushered out of the building by police officers, with visitors staying behind to talk about the night and their respective community groups with others.
They’re nuts about soup THEY’RE nuts about chestnuts. Mount Dandenong pre-schoolers visited a local chestnut farm in Olinda last week to collect chestnuts for the annual Kalorama Chestnut Festival. In the lead-up to the festival, the kinder community comes together to harvest fresh chestnuts from local farms which they then sell roasted, fresh or transformed into something yummy like chestnut truffles or chestnut soup. Organiser Alanna Ford said each year the festival had about 4000 visitors. “Each year we try and add in something a little new and different,” Ms Ford said. “This year we are unearthing some really unusual and delicious new chestnut recipes, a new kids’ adventure space including an enormous tee pee and there will also be camel rides.” The Kalorama Chestnut Festival is held on Sunday 4 May at the Kalorama Reserve. Lilydale eyes an icon - for $90,000 LILYDALE will welcome a new icon in 2015 with the announcement of a $90,000 grant to support a new public artwork for the Castella Street precinct. Minister for the Arts Heidi Victoria said the work, which has been supported through the Victorian Public Sculpture Fund, will be inspired by the collections held at the nearby Yarra Ranges Regional Museum. “The Yarra Ranges boasts a
rich and nationally significant history; from the Indigenous experience at Coranderrk, to the region’s role in Australian agriculture and the legacy of the great Dame Nellie Melba,” Ms Victoria said. “This history is showcased beautifully by the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum and this new sculpture will also bring the story of the area to life, extending it beyond the museum’s walls and into the great outdoors.”
Ms Victoria said the Victorian Public Sculpture Fund aimed to get more people involved in the arts by placing contemporary artworks at the centre of community life. “Public artworks are more than just an ornament, they play a powerful role in community life by encouraging discussion, providing inspiration and representing the stories of the community in new and dynamic ways to audiences of all ages,” Ms Victoria said.

BEING a mother is a hard job. But what makes Ferny Creek’s Samantha Jackel so special is her own journey, coming from a broken home herself, to now providing a safe and solid foundation for others. She was last week named Victoria’s Barnardos Mother of the Year 2014. Samantha was applauded by Barnardos Australia’s Manish Amin who presented her with the prestigious award on 8 April at The Department of Health Services in Melbourne. “Samantha epitomises what these awards are all about and we are pleased to recognise her amazing gift for caring and nurturing our next generation,” she said. Samantha is the mother of five teenagers, aged 14-18. But her care and support doesn’t stop there. In her early twenties, Samantha and her husband saved then teenager Beverly from living on the streets while raising
her four children under the age of three. Beverly said she wouldn’t be the person she was today without Samantha’s generosity, love and guidance over the years. When asked about what made her stand out from the crowd, Samantha seemed a little taken aback. “That’s a tough question,” she said “I didn’t even know I was nominated until I got a call four weeks ago. “I guess that the judges saw that I, myself came from an abusive background and how I’ve turned it around and broken the cycle, by being able to provide a safe place for others.” Channelling her experience for the greater good, Samantha has written a book about her life, “My Purple Pants” which has helped inspire strength in countless young victims. She is also an international public speaker and has helped to raise over $1 million spent on housing for orphans in Uganda over the past five years.
On advice for other mums Samantha said, “Your past doesn’t say who you are. No matter how you’ve been mothered yourself, you can turn that around and be the best mother.” “It doesn’t define you; it releases you to be the best that you can be. When your past doesn’t define you, you don’t judge on circumstances, you see hope in them,” she said. Viv Armstrong and Sandra Kelly were also commended as Victorian finalists for the annual award. Samantha will be joining state finalists in Sydney for the three-day Barnardos Mother of the Year 2014 ceremony. Aptly held days before Mother’s Day on May 9, the event will be held at the Doltone House in Pyrmont, presented by Nine’s Today show host Lisa Wilkinson and keynote speaker Mia Freedman. Barnardos Australia is a nongovernment child protection charity, supporting kids through violence, poverty, homelessness and mental illness.

Polls hospital battle looms date Matt Posetti and Monbulk MP James Merlino invited the Mail to the hospital to discuss the Federal Government’s plan to slash $277 million from Victorian hospitals. While the cuts have not been announced, nor confirmed by the Federal Government in the lead-up to the budget, Mr Posetti and Mr Merlino were quick to attack the Liberal Party at federal and state level. “Denis Napthine’s cuts were bad enough,” Mr Posetti said. “Of all the states and territories, Tony Abbott has hit Victoria the hardest.”
Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling responded to the claims, saying that the government was considering a number of capital redevelopments as part of the budget process. “Eastern Health has not been advised of any Federal Government budget cuts for hospitals, the state and federal budgets haven’t been released and won’t be announced until May,” Mr Wakeling said. us create the boxes,” she said. “Hopefully by getting the students involved it will help them think twice about the environment and cutting down trees.” Conservation Volunteers’ officer Travis Scicchitano said the group partners up with local council, Parks Victoria and various other people who work with the environment to get a group of volunteers together to help with various projects. “A lot of people don’t have the ability to have a group of volunteers come out or locally assist,” he said. Mr Scicchitano said the nest boxes are important owing to how young a lot of the trees in the area are - most trees are not mature enough to create a hallow that a native animal could live in. “These nest boxes just speed up the natural process and it does make a huge difference,” he said. “It’s a vital link in the system and it may not seem much to our naked eye but obviously to these small creatures moving around it really creates a safe environment for them to move between mature habitats.” Shire of Yarra Ranges Bush Crew Team Leader Chris Mongan attended on the day to provide a free barbecue for the volunteers and help in the transportation of nest boxes.

New homes for gliders MONBULK Landcare had the assistance of 43 conservation volunteers in the final preparations of installing over 80 nestboxes for the Monbulk Wildlife Shelter. Monbulk Wildlife Shelter owner and leader Carolyn Seeger said she is happy that the project is taking place as it will really help the native wildlife. “People don’t realise it but there are yellow-bellied gliders, sugar gliders and greater gliders around and they need big hollows to nest in.” she said. Sue Wansbrough from Monbulk Landcare said since the 2009 bushfires the group was concerned about the tree clearing that occurred and the subsequence loss of native habitats. “Just the eucalyptus trees alone take up to 100-years-plus to grow,” she said. “We’ve chosen this location at Monbulk Wildlife Shelter as it is backing onto the crown land which is where Carolyn is sending out rehabilitated animals.” Ms Wansbrough said Monbulk Landcare has made hundreds of boxes for the local area and it is funded by volunteers. “Monbulk College Ranges Tech, Bunnings, Bayswater Secondary, Billanook College have really helped

PREMIER Denis Napthine inspected the progress of replacing bare wire powerlines in Montrose last Monday to reduce bushfire risk in the Dandenong Ranges. A total of 23 kilometres of high voltage powerlines is being replaced as a result of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $750 million Powerline Bushfire Safety Program. The Premier alongside Minister for Energy and Resources Russell Northe, Liberal Eastern Victoria Region MP Andrew Ronalds and Monbulk candidate Mark Verschuur met with workers to discuss the progress in reducing bushfire risk. Dr Napthine said he was impressed by the works making the Dandenong Ranges safer and commended SP AusNet for their diligent work. “We are getting on with the job protecting Victorians from bushfires with stage one of the works in the Dandenong Ranges now reaching completion,” he said. “By placing lines underground or using insulated cable we can reduce the risk of bushfires.” Dr Napthine said this current stage was one of the largest components of the project that involved replacing bare wire high voltage lines with underground cabling and required directional boring at a depth of one metre or greater under roads and other infrastructure. He said with the undergrounding of these lines now complete, aerial bundling of a further 9.35 kilometres of powerlines could now take place with work scheduled to finish halfway through the year. Mr Vershuur said as a local living in the area with his family
he welcomed the major powerline works. “Cutting the bushfire risk in and around the Dandenong Ranges area is a priority for our community,” he said. SP AusNet External Relations Manager Jonathon Geddes said the company was pleased to be working with the government to deliver the Powerline Bushfire Safety Program which complements their ongoing programs to mitigate bushfire risk. SP AusNet manages a $7 billion electricity and gas network that services more than 1.2 million customers in south-east Australia. Mr Northe said the aerial bundling would be the first to take place in Victoria under the Powerline Bushfire Safety Program. He said the program was one of the most significant programs in protecting Victorian lives, infrastructure, environment and industry from the catastrophic effects of bushfires. “The works taking place here will make all the difference in protecting those at-risk communities south and south-west of Mount Dandenong from bushfires on those ominous days when the temperatures are high, the winds are strong and the environment is dry,” he said. Aerial bundled cables are overhead powerline using insulated phase conductors bundled tightly together. “This means when the lines come into contact with other objects, such as vegetation, wildlife and other powerlines or on occasions where they fall to the ground, the high-voltage bare wire line within the insulations is protected and resultant arcing or sparking does not occur,” Mr Northe said.
POLICE have thrown the book at a 39-year-old Mount Evelyn man after a number of burglaries and thefts at commercial car washes in Lilydale and Chirnside Park. The man was charged with two counts of burglary, six counts of theft from a car, 10 counts of theft and was also charged with handling stolen goods. He has been bailed and will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

IT’S still five months away, but the Angliss Hospital is shaping up to become a huge local issue in the lead-up to September’s State Election. Eastern Health has already pushed their plan to revamp and rebuild the Angliss, and hope the election will help their agenda. At a recent Upper Ferntree Gully Auxillary AGM, Eastern Health CEO Alan Lily said he was pleased with the recent completion of a mas-
ter plan for the future of the Angliss Hospital. “While we have no promises of funding just yet,” he said. “We’re hoping the looming election will give us the boost we need. “And that it’ll be helped by the fact that we are ready and willing to go.” But neither party has thrown their support behind the expansion just yet, preferring to focus on health funding cuts from both the current and past governments. Tracking expenses, priority spending HAVING difficulty making ends meet? With the rising costs of housing, unemployment, underemployment, the casualisation of the workforce, increasing cost of utilities and other cost of living pressures impacting on a broader cross section of the community, it is not uncommon that more and more people are experiencing difficulty making ends meet. work is increasing, creating a situation whereby financial counsellors find they are unable to work with consumers on their budget and money management issues. Below are three steps a person
can take to address their finances. Step 1: Keeping track of your expenses. It is critical that you know where every single cent is going. Keep a record of everything you spend including the monthly rent, utility bills, groceries, coffee, etc.Write it down on paper or use your smart phone to keep a record of your spending. Step 2: Prioritised and adjust your spending. Once you have a record or list of all
your spending, you need to priorities them. Make a column of expenses that are ‘needs’, ‘wants’ and ‘can live without’. Rent, food, medication, and utilities should be in the ‘needs’ column. The objective of this exercise is to reduce your spending for the ‘wants’ and ‘can live without’ column. Making small adjustments to your spending every day, you’ll find it will become second nature.

Storm scene created anew By MELISSA MEEHAN AGE has wearied Upwey’s storm scene mural, but a new lease of life will be brought to the laneway as a local artist works on re-creating the wellknown painting. The Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group commissioned artist Peter Van Breugel to recreate the mural he painted about 12 years ago on the eastern wall of the Upwey branch. Chairman of the Group Peter Marke said the mural had deteriorated over the years, mainly due to the failure of anti-graffiti coating applied to the mural panels. The panels are currently being replicated, and Peter has also commenced re-painting the associated storm scene on part of the bank’s brick wall.

Depending on weather conditions, it is hoped that these murals will be completed in the next few months. “We are very proud to be able to fund this project as a donation to the people of Upwey, as these murals have been such a large part of the Upwey streetscape for many years,” Mr Marke said. “Our company felt that the
significant local history told by these panels was worth preserving and recreating, so that future Upwey residents and visitors can appreciate how the area was developed. “It also serves as a testimonial to the designer, the late Jack Montgomery who was an internationally credentialed artist and lived in Upwey for many years.”
Drive-through in reverse gear By MELISSA MEEHAN FAST food in a flash won’t be an option for Yarra Ranges diners, after the Victorian Government approved planning changes stopping drive-throughs in the area. The changes, focusing on stopping new drive-through restaurants in Belgrave, Tecoma, Mount Dandenong, Kallista, Olinda and Sassafras are the first in the state. Approved by Planning Minister Matthew Guy, the council’s amendment will come into effect this week, and discourage drive-through sales on new commercial developments. Speaking at the Community
Cabinet in Upwey last Monday, Mr Guy said the changes would make it much more difficult for fast food chains to set up in the area. He also said it would be much more difficult for McDonald’s to obtain a planning permit for its Tecoma restaurant if the amendment had been in place. Mr Guy was asked numerous questions about his inability to step in on the controversial development, with many saying that the community felt as though their voices hadn’t been heard. “There are two ways you can solve some of the issues you’ve
raised, you can change the appeal mechanism or look at a change to zoning or schedule structure,” he said. “This council (as a result of the C126) will get a hell of a lot more protection than it had in the past.” Tecoma Village Action Group (TVAG) president Nicole Gale thanked Mr Guy and fellow ministers for approving the planning changes. “Having our voices heard in the political process is one of the cornerstones we have had to overcome,” she said. “The planning laws have to give the community a chance to have their concerns heard.”
Youth need life mentors IT’S ONLY an hour a week. But those few hours could change a young person’s life. ECHO Youth and Family Services are in desperate need for mentors who can provide a “big brother/big sister” presence in a young person’s life. Their program, in partnership with Emerald Secondary College, assists teens going through an unsettled time in their life by providing the sup-
port of a mentor. ECHO staff member Kyria Perry said the mentor program was completely funded by the State Government and aimed to connect disengaged young people with their community. “We’re aiming to connect young people with others who can provide some support, a different familiar face outside their usual family or friends,” Ms Perry said. “We target kids that are in need of mentoring, whether it
be because of low self-esteem, or another reason.” Ms Perry said ECHO was looking for volunteer mentors aged 21 and over. “It’s a six-month program, and only one hour a week,” she said. “We look after all the paperwork and police and working with children checks.” Anyone interested in becoming a mentor is asked to contact Ms Perry on 5968 4460.

Time for McPeace SURPRISE, surprise ... the sun came up in Tecoma on Tuesday in spite of Macca’s opening the previous day. Darkness did not descend, and all I saw were happy smiling families bringing back perhaps something positive to the locale. Yes of course there was some unruly behaviour from pockets on both sides, but generally the mood was festive. Now I don’t eat McDonald’s, I was a fencesitter, but I did go and take a look inside the building. However, I found that I am not allowed to take that stand without some fallout. Some see that building as a monstrosity, and believe it’s tragic for Tecoma. The real tragedy is not the building, or traffic issues (that may or may not add to an already congested road). It’s not the kids that might get fat because parents don’t know how to say NO, or the multitude of apparent other reasons, too numerous to mention. What is really tragic are the relationships and friendships that have been unnecessarily altered or lost. Macca’s will go on, and history will be the judge, but lives and connections have been changed forever. As for those who have accused me of “nailing my colours to the mast” ... well, you can give me, my “live and let live” style of democracy over yours anytime. Michael Alexander, Belgrave Drycleaners.
Rhyme or reason WITH apologies to Robert Frost Monbulk, (letters last week) and Robert Frost, (San Francisco, New England, England and Florida) America’s favourite poet. In last week’s paper, Robert Frost (Monbulk) wrote about carers and the cost/contact nexus. Perhaps his namesake would have said it thusly: I shall be telling this as I die Somewhere deep in budgets hence My carers’ costs became far too high So my friends shorter caring hours fly And that has deep’ned my despondence. John Nieman, Monbulk.
Docs feed the need By MELISSA MEEHAN MOUNT Evelyn’s Men’s Shed provided some tasty treats for surgeons on a bike ride to raise money for the Cabrini Hospital. Last month the surgeons rode along the Warburton Trail before stopping for homemade sausage rolls, cupcakes, sandwiches and jelly slices. Men’s Shed co-ordinator Jack
Kleynjan said the surgeons were trying to raise money for much-needed research at the hospital. “They had some pretty big plans, and planned to raise $25,000 for Cabrini,” he said. But the surgeons weren’t selfish in their actions, donating $250 to the Men’s Shed to say thankyou for the feed.
A spread of quality homemade food was made available to the team of hungry surgeons.

When Bill went to war By REBECCA BILLS FORGING his mother’s signature at age 17 and getting a fake birth certificate stating he was 19, Bill Holmes enlisted in the army in 1941. Registering at the Melbourne Town Hall, he was enlisted with the 7th Infantry Battalion, serving in Darwin. Mr Holmes said he wanted to join the army as he was the youngest in his friendship group and everyone else had already enlisted and left. “One lunchtime I just decided I was going to go, went down to Melbourne Town Hall and enlisted,” he said. “I was only 17 at the time but a friend of mine had a sister who was able to give me a new birth certificate saying I was 19.” Mr Holmes said he arrived in Darwin after the first Japanese bombing and witnessed many bombings over a 23-month period. “Nobody down south knew what was going on; they didn’t want to frighten them,” he said. “While that was going on, I was sent to the Tablelands for training in jungle warfare and I went on to New Guinea after that.” Mr Holmes also served in the British Solomon Islands

and Bougainville as a Bren gunner. “You don’t feel the danger when you’re young and a gunner, you become immune to it all because of your training,” he said. “That is until you lose one of your mates – it just makes you more determined to get it over and done with.” Mr Holmes said he was discharged in Royal Park in 1946 with the rank of corporal, and said there was no debriefing in those days. “I just caught the tram home and that was that,” he said. “We really relied on our mates, you kept in touch with everyone – out of 1300 or so of us in the 7th Battalion there are only about 20 of us left now. “I also collapsed with malaria and ended up in the Repatriation Hospital three or four times – while we were serving over there we took a tablet that meant we didn’t get sick but when we
got home we didn’t get the tablet and ended up sick.” In 1948 Mr Holmes joined the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as an instructor and retired in 1962 as a Warrant Officer Class One. He said a highlight of his time in the army was in 1995 when he was nominated as part of the 50th anniversary of World War II’s ‘Australia Remembers’ to go on a pilgrimage to New Guinea. “I’ve just turned 90 and looking back you remember the good times and your very good mates who were more like family,” he said. “Anzac Day is a day that we know we will get back together – it’s our little reunion.” Mr Holmes moved to Emerald in 1982 and served the local RSL Emerald branch in various capacities including acting as president three times, and is still an active member.

Bill’s Vietnam war at sea By DAVID ALLEGRETTI MOUNT Evelyn resident Bill Smart was just 16 years of age when he left home to enlist in the Royal Australian Navy. Following advice from a school careers officer and with a family military background, a career in the defence force seemed like a logical step, not to mention a great opportunity for such a young man. Having left high school at what would be the equivalent to modern day Year 10, Mr Smart spent six months engaged in self-motivated study before embarking on an adventure of a lifetime in July of 1964. “This is the medal I’m fondest of,” said Mr Smart as he gestured to his Vietnam medal, the left-most medal of the four he proudly wears pinned to his chest. “You had a choice of three paths which you could get into. “My first choice was photographer actually and the second one was meteorologist and the third was electronics and I ended up getting the electronics one.” After spending nine months at sea just off the coast of Vietnam with HMAS Sydney, Mr Smart came back to Australia to continue his electronics training before once again embarking for Vietnam with HMAS Hobart. “I was one of those injured on Hobart when it got rocketed - I got belted right under the arm,” said Mr Smart as he recalled one particularly rough day at the office. “Then the adrenaline kicks in, you think ‘OK, we’re being hit’ but you don’t have time for much else.” He was only 20 metres away when the first round of artillery came raining down on HMAS Hobart. In this attack he saw two young colleagues killed.
Bill Smart with a flag from his time in the navy, with the cenotaph behind. “I just felt like I’d been punched I turned to the bloke beside me thinking he had just belted me one - I quickly realised it wasn’t a punch,” he said. “We were wearing flak jackets with steel plates in them, not like the Kevlar things they have nowadays, big heavy steel plates with a slight gap under the arm, and luckily it hit the bone before it went anywhere else.
“They didn’t have to stitch it - it was that red hot that the shrapnel just cauterised the wound. They just bandaged it up, it was sore for a week but that was that.” Sadly, Mr Smart believes that some of the spirit of Anzac Day is getting lost. He speaks of his grandfather serving in Gallipoli and his father who vol-
Picture: ROB CAREW unteered in Australia before serving in England in the Home Guard. “It’s getting lost; you’ve got to remember what went on. We have to do it not just for us but for the younger generations and they’ve got to realise what goes on,” he said. “You’ve got to remember things like that - you’ve got to make sure that the nasty parts of it just don’t happen again.”
Having come to Australia from Wales at just six months old, Mr Smart has no plans to return to the land of his birth. “They say people die within 15 kilometres of where they were born. “So I’m not going back - I’m going to stay here and live forever,” he said with a laugh.
Major victory for equality in the armed forces By REBECCA BILLS SHE was a trailblazer for women in the military, and has dedicated her life to the service. Now a retired major, Isabel Frederick joined the Australian Army to further her education. Inspired by the Anzacs’ demonstration of the military virtues of ‘duty, courage, teamwork, resolution and self-sacrifice,’ Ms Frederick said those same qualities led her to join the Australian Army at the tail end of the Vietnam conflict. “My family was poor, and we didn’t have any money to pay for further education, so I needed to support myself independently,” she said.
“It felt like I would be doing something meaningful while being paid to learn useful skills. “I had never been on a plane and I was definitely a ‘Mummy’s girl’ when I left but I certainly grew up in the army.” Ms Frederick graduated as officer and said she was trained in IT. “I didn’t even know what a computer was when I joined in 1973,” she said. “I’ve spent the last 20 years of my working life in IT so that early grounding was a key foundation to my professional career.” After leaving the Regular Army in
1977, Ms Frederick enlisted immediately in the Army Reserve. “I’d joined the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) that same year and rose to the rank of corporal - I was also approached to become an officer,” she said. “Once commissioned as an officer I was put into pay corps because I was doing a degree in accounting as well as working full-time. “Although I made some great mates in pay corps, I wanted to do something more active and in those days women were not allowed to join the arms corps - infantry, artillery, armour or en-
gineers - but I could join the transport corps, and I did.” Ms Frederick said looking back she was never discriminated against for her gender, however she is proud that young women today can join all corps. “While I served with some wonderful men over my military career, I believe there is a strength that comes from diversity, in all its forms, that forges great teams,” she said. “It continues to amaze me what can be achieved by teams of people who have the resolve to make things happen. “The army taught me that if you’re going to do something, you do it properly, and you complete the task.”
This Anzac Day, Ms Frederick will be Parade Marshal for the Upwey/Belgrave RSL. “We remember on this day those who fell in both world wars, in conflicts in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, and more recently in Afghanistan,” Ms Frederick said. “That Anzac spirit reinforces in all of us the values of independence, freedom and fairness and above all a willingness to defend these things if need be. “If we do celebrate anything on Anzac Day, it is the legacy that those who fought at Anzac Cove gave us, which those who followed them strengthened and enriched.”

Saxton puzzle solved in time By KATH GANNAWAY THE mystery of World War I soldier Reuben Saxton has come full circle. For years, Mount Evelyn RSL has had a plaque with his name on it which they believed was from the Mount Evelyn Avenue of Honour - but there was no one by that name on the Mount Evelyn WWI lists. There was, however, a Reuben Saxton from Gilderoy in the national military records. “We couldn’t understand why it looked different to the only other plaque from the Mount Evelyn Avenue of Honour,” said Mount Evelyn RSL president Roger Boness, who last month repatriated the plaque to the Upper Yarra Historical Society for safe keeping and possible inclusion in their military collection. The discovery couldn’t have come at a better time for the UYHS as their plans with Upper Yarra RSL proceed for the replanting of a memorial avenue of trees for the Anzac Centenary. The original memorial trees were at the Yarra Junction Sports Ground near the memorial gates and featured individual picket fence guards with plaques presumed to be engraved with the names of the World War I fallen. Reuben Saxton was killed in action at Cape Helles on Gallipoli in 1915. The Saxton plaque is the only one known to be in existence. In an ironic twist, local military historian, Bob Sutherland, told the story at the presentation of how he had found the Saxton plaque when he was just starting out on his military research. He gave it to a Yarra Junction woman as a more appropriate custodian, explaining that he didn’t recognise the significance of the plaque at the time. How it came to be donated to Mount Evelyn RSL is still a mystery. The ‘find’ is exciting and timely for the UYHS. “This is our first template for our efforts to recreate the memorial trees and as such is very significant,” UYHS president Tom O’Meara said. The plan now is to replant the memorial trees along the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail.

As part of the project, a permanent memorial to the 2000 Australians who died fighting at Kokoda is located at the base of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk. The walk is said to be very similar to the first 100 metres of Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Along the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk there are 14 plaques dedicated to those who fought and died on the track. A number of Anzac Day services will be held throughout
the Dandenong Ranges on Friday 25 April. Paul’s a born skydiver By MELISSA MEEHAN JUMPING out of a plane isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea. But for Cockatoo’s Paul Easterbrook, it was something he was born to do. He made his first jump (tandem) when he was just 17, and while it took him another 10 years he knew skydiving was something he wanted to do. “I can’t explain the feeling of jumping out a plane to someone,” he said. “It’s just a great thing to do, people can overcome their fears… to throw yourself out of a plane… it’s really pushing the limit.” Easterbrook worked in a coal mine to help pay for all the equipment, so he could make his dreams a reality. Now he’s made over 1600 jumps, and is now part of a team taking part in national championships. Over Easter, Easterbrook and his team-mates are taking part in the Australian National Skydiving Championships in York, Western Australia. He’s the camera man for the amateur formation skydiving team Relo4ded made up of Scott Clark, Ben Allen, Drew Whitworth and Rick Frank. “There’s a lot of pressure being the camera guy,” Easterbrook said. “I’ve got to get all the formation, otherwise we don’t qualify”. Formed in 2011 at the Nagambie Drop Zone, the group decided on a common goal - to win the intermediate category and break the current point scoring record for a single round, currently set at 18 formations in 35 seconds.

New hoops for CEO of Knox Basketball By JODIE SYMONDS KNOX Basketball will soon be shooting hoops with Stephen Walter as the new Chief Executive Officer. Mr Walter’s experience as CEO of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League over the last six years made him an ideal candidate. He has also gained credibility - with

a large part of his working life being dedicated to the National Australia Bank in many corporate roles - along with playing for Knox Basketball in his younger years. “My clear objection as CEO is to deliver a quality service for both football and netball. However, it is equally important for our league to develop both a sustainable and scalable busi-
ness model that would guarantee our future,” Mr Walter said. Knox Basketball chairperson Eric Noordzy said Mr Walter’s track record in business experience made him extremely pleased. “I had no hesitation in endorsing the selection panel’s recommendation to appoint Stephen to the role,” Mr Noordzy said.
Knox Basketball would like to acknowledge Jonathan Mond’s contribution to the club in his temporary role since February. Mr Walter will commence his role as CEO of the club in late April with Mr Mond staying until May for the handover of position.
TWO avid Melbourne supporters won the ambrose competition at Emerald Golf Club the very same day Melbourne Football Club won. It’s the first game the football team has won in over 280 days and last Saturday Ben Balfour and Allan Ecclestone (9.25) won in a canter with a net score of 58.75. In second place were Leigh Morison and Pater Jones (9.25) on 60.75, followed by Ken Hill and Steve Town (6.75) on 62.25. Travis Gerbes won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the fourth, Allan Ecclestone won on the seventh and the 13th, Steve Town on the 12th and also picked up the pro pin dough on the 18th. The ladies event saw runaway winners in Irene Cranston and Davina Mackey who showed the other women how to handle the ambrose format. On Wednesday for the Overly Foppish Golf (OFG) game, it was a three- man ambrose event. After the computations had been completed, it emerged that the team of Ian Scott, Mike Litchfield and Travis Gerbes were on top of the crowded podium with a net 59.2. Second were Bob Kennedy, Graeme Fergus and Mick Petrie on 60.5 followed by John Piggott, Ken Hill and Sepp Krummenacher on 61.5. The OFG pennant team were at home to Eastern Sward and were the winners 6/5 while the handicap team, also playing Eastern Sward at their course, went down 10/4 after a solid but unrequited fight. Next Saturday, members play a peaceful round of stableford.
