Two of the best
RSL OUR TRUE BLUE MATES
By XAVIER SMERDON
By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO
TWO of the West’s oldest and most respected war veterans will be among the thousands of residents who will gather to remember the ultimate sacrifices made by fallen soldiers. At 103 years old, James Crouch is the oldest WWII veteran living in Werribee. Born in England, he spent most of his time in the war in Italy where he fired 25-pounder howitzers, the major British field gun at the time. He was later transferred to Greece and was about to be sent to India when his wife was injured in a car accident. Mr Crouch moved to Australia in 1977 and joined Werribee RSL. He has taken part in every Anzac Day Dawn Service at the cenotaph every year since. Just a few kilometres away, another veteran has become known as one of the most revered members of his community. Bordy Weeku is a Karen refugee who fought for the British army in World War II after the Japanese invaded Burma with the help of the Burma Independence Army. He joined the army in 1937 at just 18 years old, before training as a soldier in India. The 94-year-old spent almost 20 years in a Burmese refugee camp, surrounded by barbed wire and living on basic rations, before moving to Werribee in 2007. He is now the oldest and most respected member of Wyndham’s Karen community, which is made up of members of the second-largest ethnic group from Burma. Mr Weeku told Star that he was proud of his efforts during WWII and he was now enjoying his life in Werribee. Last year around 6000 people attended the Dawn Service in Werribee, the largest crowd Werribee RSL President Daryl Ryan had ever seen in his 40 years with the organisation. “It’s great to know that so many people recognise the sacrifices that were made by people that went to war,” Mr Ryan said.
AS people from Melbourne’s West prepare to commemorate Anzac Day this Friday, veterans continue to remind us of the importance of the local RSL. President of the Caroline Springs RSL subbranch Peter Burquest told Star the RSL remained a very important institution for returned service personnel, despite its popularity declining in recent years. Already the Caroline Springs branch, which was officially opened in February this year, has gained widespread support from the community. “The response has been great, we already have just over 100 members in the past few months,” Mr Burquest said. The Vietnam veteran said RSLs were established to assist veterans and their families after serving their country. “We need to maintain what the RSL is all about, we are hoping to attract the younger generation to become members ... eventually military personnel will run out but Anzac Day still needs to be held dear as one of the most important days of the year.” In recent years two RSLs in Melbourne’s West have been forced to shut their doors. The Maribyrnong-Maidstone RSL closed after the club discovered it was $57,000 in debt, while Spotswood RSL faced closure in 2012. President of Altona RSL Tom Crooks said despite recent closures the RSL still played a key role in the lives of veterans and their families. “The RSL was all about the welfare of veterans but it has become a lot more ... to me the most important thing is getting the younger generation involved,” Mr Crooks said. “We explain to them that they are the future, it’s them that will keep us going. “It’s all about mateship, we all get together ... Vietnam vets, soldiers returning from Afghanistan and East Timor. “We’re trying to get away from the old man’s club, but when an RSL gets into trouble we work together.”
103-year-old James Crouch and 94-year-old Bordy Weeku. “We have freedom of the press and we have freedom of speech thanks to what some of these men and women did during WWI and WWII and thanks to what soldiers are still doing overseas today.” Mr Ryan has been president of the RSL for a total of 29 years, and after he returned from Vietnam injured, he said it was important for

the community to be accepting of all returning soldiers. “A lot of sub-branches wouldn’t accept Vietnam veterans, but Werribee was different. They accepted me since day one,” he said. “We’re very proud of the sacrifices that all of our members have made.”

Our part in history By CHARLENE MACAULAY WORLD WAR I and the Gallipoli Campaign are considered to be defining moments in Australian history. It was also a defining moment for the thousands of young fighters across the West who fought for their country. One of those was 18-year-old Thomas Duff Anderson Aitken. At an age where people nowadays get their licence and are legally allowed to drink, the Yarraville resident joined the Australian Imperial Force and was assigned to the 31st Battery, 8th BA Brigade. The qualified fitter rose to the rank of gunner as he was deployed to various areas, including France and Belgium. He died of wounds sustained in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917 as part of the 2nd ANZAC Corps, aged 20.
Meanwhile, Sunshine resident Leslie Raymond Hensbergh enlisted as a 19-year-old brass finisher in February 1916 and was deployed to France and England as a private. He was reported wounded and missing in France in May 1917 - only 15 months after enlisting - and was confirmed to be killed in action in December that year. Then there’s 21-year-old Robert George Blackburne, who joined in January 1916 with two years of Senior Cadets experience in Williamstown. He started off in Engineer Reinforcements 2nd MD and worked across France and England before returning to Australia at the end of 1918. Thomas, Leslie and Robert were only three of thousands of young men across the West and Australia who joined the war effort in a showing of national pride and bravery. One hundred years on, we will continue to remember them.
YOUR SONS ARE OUR SONS NOW By YASEMIN TALAT ANZAC Day is a time to commemorate the Johnnies and the Mehmets, with Australians and Turkish Australians coming together to remember their forefathers this Anzac Day. President of the Turkish SubBranch of the Victorian RSL, Ramazan Altintas, said it was an important time for the Turkish community in Australia to come together with their fellow Australians and remember the lives lost at war and the mateship formed between the Johnnies and the Mehmets. “This is a time where we can honour, remember, and a time for us all to reflect with pride on our history and values that unite us as Australians and Turks,” Mr Altintas said.
“Anzac Day for Turks is not only the day of their proud victory against all odds to reassert their right to nationhood, but also their admiration for the valorous troops of ANZAC they encountered in the test of fire,” he said. “Anzac Day for Australians is the day of pride for an identity proven without doubt and the merit of a nationhood forged in battle.” “Yes the Johnnies and the Mehmets fought against each other in 1915, however the conduct of friendship and comradeship was existent among them all.” This year marks the 99th anniversary since the World War I battle of Gallipoli commenced on 25 April 1915. As part of the commemoration the
Turkish members of the Turkish Subbranch of the Victorian RSL, as well as Turkish members from RSLs across Victoria and the wider Turkish community will join the Anzac March and ceremony. The Melbourne Turkish Community Centre and the Turkish Sub-Branch of the Victorian RSL will also host a commemorative evening to mark the anniversary. “The Johnnies and the Mehmets portrayed a sense of duty and courage that continue to inspire us,” Mr Altintas said. “Their stories of sacrifice and service illuminate the highest virtues of the human spirits.” Next year, Mr Altintas, with the help and support of the Australian
and Turkish governments, is hoping to erect an Australian and Turkish friendship memorial sculpture at the Shrine of Remembrance to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI, Anzac Day and to pay tribute to all the soldiers and their bravery. “Anzac Day is always going to be, for each Turk and Aussie, a day to prove to a friend and foe that those who have fallen in 1915 have confirmed our right to survive as nations,” Mr Altintas said. “May they rest in peace as their ideals continue to be upheld by each and every new Turkish and Australian generation.” The then Turkish president and Gallipoli veteran Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s 1934 tribute commemorating the loss
of Anzac and Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us Where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away the tears; Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

Big bite on pokies By XAVIER SMERDON TWO of Wyndham’s biggest not-forprofit clubs are set to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars after State Government legislation to increase the tax on poker machines was passed in parliament. Tarneit MP Tim Pallas said the Werribee Tigers Football Club had estimated it would lose $264,000 annually,
and the Hoppers Club would likely lose $100,000. Hoppers Club General Manager, Michael Lewis, said the increased tax would mean there would be a hold on all community sponsorships and donations and a 100 per cent increase in membership fees. “I am personally saddened that our club, a club with a 40-year history of serving its community, now finds it-
self in such an unenviable position that it has to cut jobs, reduce services to members and discontinue with valuable support to the community,” Mr Lewis said. Mr Pallas said the increased tax would put more jobs in the West at risk. “The last thing we need is another tax grab that will put more jobs at risk,” Mr Pallas said.

AS an ex-smoker, I do have some sympathy for the rules and regulations that current smokers have to abide by, but that is their choice. I always find it a bit upsetting to see smokers puffing away outside shopping centres with their children sitting next to them. That to me is almost as bad as smoking inside the house in the same room. The children have no choice, which is wrong. I noticed this last week as I was walking into my local supermarket, there was a young woman smoking with two small children. As I was leaving the supermarket the woman began an expletive laden tirade against her daughter for knocking something out of her bag. The language was vile, vicious and the decibel level would have drowned out AC/DC in their prime. I was stunned, and found it very disturbing. One can only wonder what happens behind closed doors. USUALLY this column is the first to complain about our roads and streets, but on a positive note, how good is it to hit the bottom of the West Gate Bridge and get a 100km/h drive all the way home. It has been a very long time since the roadworks began around the Ring Rd entrances, and for the first time in ages it feels like you are driving on a freeway. I have to admit I found myself slowing to 80km/h out of habit. The cars whizzing past me soon alerted me to put the foot down. Woo Hoo! Plan to end ambo war Fuel found THE stalemate between the State Government and Victorian ambulance paramedics would be ended under a Labor Government, the Opposition has declared. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said last week the Labor Party would end the dispute over pay immediately by referring the matter to an independent umpire to rule on. “The way to fix our broken am-
bulance system is to end Denis Napthine’s war on paramedics,” Mr Andrews said. “This dispute should be sent to the independent umpire now. If Denis Napthine won’t, then a Labor Government will.” Shadow Health Minister Gavin Jennings also said the stalemate was putting people’s lives at risk. “Under Denis Napthine, too many people are waiting too long
for an ambulance and lives are at risk,” Mr Jennings said. “We will work with our paramedics - we believe in co-operation, not condemnation.” The Labor Party claimed in a statement that 27 per cent of ambulances were failing to reach emergency cases on time, nearly 25 per cent of ambulance transfers to hospitals were taking longer than 40 minutes and a 2013 survey showed that 1500 paramedics were planning
on leaving the service in the next five years. Last month, following a ballot held by the Ambulance Employees Australia union, it was announced that union members would be able to speak publicly about the pay dispute under protected action. Star contacted the Health Minister David Davis’s office for comment but they did not respond before deadline.

HUNDREDS of students have been given a real-life experience of what it is like to be a keeper at the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Almost 100 students took part in the zoo’s school holiday program, Keeper for a Day. Designed for students from Years 7 to 12, Keeper for a Day provides budding young animal enthusiasts with an opportunity to work in the zoo for the day, helping keepers and learning about their daily duties and career pathways. The experience takes kids behind the scenes as they follow in the footsteps of keepers, learning about their work in conservation of endangered species and about the importance of animal care, observation and enrichment. One of the most popular parts of the program, was ‘gorilla graffiti’, whereby students went behind the scenes to create chalk drawings in the gorilla den, providing sensory enrichment for Motaba and his two sons Yakini and Ganyeka. The students also made up hessian sacks stuffed with wood, wool and healthy vegie treats for the gorillas, to encourage foraging behavior, and cut up small sections of leafy greens to spread around their exhibit. Students also had a chance to help out another important aspect of being a Keeper - picking up animal poo - hippo poo to be exact. Genevieve Johnson, education officer at Werribee Open Range Zoo, said that Keeper for a Day was focused on giving students a real understanding of what being a keeper is all about. “Kids leave with an appreciation for what goes on behind the scenes. From food preparation, medical checks and animal observations, to picking up poo - it’s all part of a keeper’s job” Ms Johnson said. “Keeper Kids is hugely popular with the students but it’s also a big hit with staff members, who get a lot of joy out of being able to share their passion for their work and to meet this next generation of conservationists.”

POLICE are clamping down on hoon drivers in a new pilot program that will see cars impounded at residential addresses. The six-month trial will see specially trained Highway Patrol officers determine whether a hoon driver can have their vehicle immobilised by wheel clamps or steering locks at a private address instead of having the car taken to an impound facility. The pilot is being undertaken to determine if immobilisation is a viable, effective and sustainable alternative to impoundment, and will complement the current impoundment program already in place across metropolitan Melbourne. The initiative will run until 30 September. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said Victoria Police had always had the power to immobilise a vehicle under the Road Safety Act 1986, however recent legislative changes made it possible to outsource immobilisation to contractors. “Victoria Police impounded around 4600 vehicles last year and we are projecting a similar number of impounds this year,” he said. “This pilot will determine what the benefits are to the community and the police. “We believe immobilisation will reduce our vehicle storage costs, but more importantly, it will alleviate officers having to wait around for tow trucks and get them back on the road. “A sticker will be placed on the vehicle outlining the fines associated with tampering with the immobilisation device or unauthorised relocation of the vehicle. Hooning includes anti-social road behaviour, including excessive speeding, repeat drink driving or disqualified driving. Since July 2011, police have had the power to seize a vehicle involved in hooning and impound or immobilise it for 30 days. If a driver is found guilty of three hoon-related offences inside three years, their vehicle can be permanently forfeited by the court.

By YASEMIN TALAT THE Sunshine Community Theatre will launch its first season this year with the comedy play ‘Family Spirit’ hitting the stage in May. One of the theatre’s long time performers Sharleen Griffey will make her debut as the director of the production, which was written by English playwright Pat Wollaston. Ms Griffey grew up as part of the Sunshine Community Theatre family alongside her father who was the former president in the ’80s and a performer, and her brother who was also a performer. “My dad used to do amateur theatre before I was born and when my mum passed away he decided he wanted to get back into it,” Ms Griffey said. “And my brother and I thought it would be fun if we did something as a family,” she said. “We did our first play together in 2005 and it was pretty fun doing it together.” Ms Griffey said going to the theatre was a great family activity and hoped that families across Brimbank would embrace the theatre. “It’s a great outing for families and everyone has an awesome night out,” Ms Griffey said. Ms Griffey said anyone who liked to laugh would enjoy the story about a recently deceased man named Arthur who was haunting his old house. The show, which opens on Friday 2 May, includes the talent of cast and crew from across Brimbank, Wyndham and Melton. The SCT will also launch a youth theatre on Wednesday nights at 4.30pm for youngsters aged up to 18. The show will run until 10 May at Dempster Park Hall, 82 Phoenix St, North Sunshine. ANIMAL cruelty is on the rise in the Western Suburbs with a recent spike in attacks towards cats and dogs. Founder of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue Nathan Miles said neglect and cruelty towards animals, especially cats, was common in the Western Suburbs and urged pet owners to be more responsible. “It is more common than people think,” Mr Miles said. “We’ve had an increase in cases lately and we have had some really bad cases,” he said. “Particularly in Brimbank because there’s such a high stray cat population and a lot of irresponsible owners,” he said. “The community needs to be responsible and treat cats like companion animals.” Mr Miles said cats were especially a target because the community did not value them as they did dogs. “Cats are seen in a different way to dogs in society,” Mr Miles said. “Dogs seem to be more valued.” The concern follows the most recent case last week, when a kitten was found in St Albans with its ears cut. Mr Miles said the kitten was tortured and then dumped, before it was found by a resident who contacted Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue. “It appears as though someone has taken a pair of scissors and chopped both ears,” Mr Miles said. “Our main emphasis is to get the cat fixed, de-sexed and mi-

Police seeking station vandals
By XAVIER SMERDON
By XAVIER SMERDON POLICE are on the hunt for a group of teens who allegedly vandalised the entrance of the Werribee train station on 5 March this year. A Victoria Police spokesperson said the youths were wanted in relation to criminal damage charges. “A group of 11 teens were seen loitering outside the Station Place entrance around 10.50am and used black markers to graffiti the entrance ramp wall,” the spokesperson said. “Police have released images of two teens whom they believe may be able to assist them in their inquiries.” One of the teens was wearing a yellow and black high-visibility top with a dark headband and shoulder-length hair and the other teen had dark hair and was wearing a red Chicago Bulls singlet with the number one on it. WYNDHAM Council is preparing to mark Anzac Day with a local and intimate view of World War I. Dr Janet Butler will visit the Plaza Library on Wednesday 23 April to discuss her book, Kitty’s War, which is based on the previously unpublished war diaries of Great War army nurse and Little River resident, Sister Kit McNaughton. The book won the 2013 New South Wales Premier’s History Prize and has been critically acclaimed. Councillor Heather Marcus said the author talk would provide a personal way to mark Anzac day. “Whether you’re an older person interested in hearing a first-
hand account of the war, someone with a military background or looking for a way to introduce young people to WWI, this story has something for everyone,” Cr Marcus said. “This book looks at the conflict through the eyes of a young Australian nurse as she is transformed by what she witnesses. It is a deeply moving story, written by Honorary Associate in History at LaTrobe University, Dr Janet Butler.” “It is a real coup for Wyndham City to have an author of such a high calibre here discussing their work.” Dr Butler will visit the Plaza Library on Wednesday 23 April, at 7pm. Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the library on 9748 9333

Best in the West By XAVIER SMERDON A 23-YEAR-old BMX rider has been named Wyndham Young Achiever of the Year. Jordan Morgan from Werribee is a member and track coordinator of the Wyndham Warriors BMX Club, assists with coaching both younger and older riders, and is currently working on the redevelopment of the Werribee BMX track. He also has a range of ontrack achievements, including five times state champion, three times national champion, finishing second in the 2013 PRA PDA Tour Series, and at the National Championships in Brisbane. He has also competed in the World Championships three times, making it into the final top eight each time. His best world ranking was number two, which he gained at the 2011 UCI World Championships in Copenhagen. He is currently the defending world number three, and competes in the 17-24 age class for men, the toughest contested class. Councillor Marie Brittan, who was at this month’s awards presentation evening, said Jordan was a worthy recipient of the Young Achiever of the Year Award. “Jordan is a fantastic role model for our young sportspeople and shows what can be achieved through hard work and commitment,” Cr Brittan said. “Jordan has shown tremendous dedication to his sport, training five days a week while working full-time over the past four years, writing his own training and nutrition plans, and even training and competing

Joint effort on bushfire fuel By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM Council is joining forces with the Little River CFA to conduct controlled burns across the municipality. The autumn burns will begin this month and continue, weather permitting, until May. Councillor Peter Gibbons said the controlled burns were necessary for grassland maintenance. “The reserves earmarked for these controlled burns consist of nationally threatened Victo-
rian volcanic plains vegetation and these burns will assist to maintain the health of plants and animals in these areas,” Cr Gibbons said. “Planned burns involve lighting fires under carefully managed conditions to reduce the impacts of damaging bushfires on communities, property and the natural environment. These burns are usually patchy, with parts of the area remaining unburnt. “The slow and patchy nature of the controlled burns reduces
the risk to native animals and the lower temperatures of the fires mean that some native plants are better able to tolerate the heat. “Residents and businesses that live and operate in these areas, should avoid the burn sites and if smoke hangs in the air, ensure windows are shut and turn the air-conditioner off.” For more information on the controlled burns, visit www. wyndham.vic.gov.au or contact Wyndham Council on 8734 2711.

Werribee hosts a horsey crowd By XAVIER SMERDON HUNDREDS of prancing horses and their riders will descend upon Werribee later this month to take part in a major tournament. The Equestrian Victoria (EV) Masters Games will be held at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 April. The event is designed for riders of all abilities aged 30 and over, with 40 per cent of
competitors aged 50 plus and a record 220 riders taking part. Vicki Sykes usually looks after her daughter Tracy McGlynn, 26, but this weekend the shoe will be on the other foot. Tracy will be strapping for her mother as she competes in the 50 and over age category. Equestrian Victoria CEO, Greg Pratt, said the weekend would be full of fun for horse lovers. “This event is unique in our calendar and celebrates riders
who have come late to the sport, returned to it after a long break, or who simply want to keep competing,” Mr Pratt said. “We are delighted by the uptake this year and are looking forward to watching the masters at work in our Showjumping, Show Horse, Carriage Driving, Pas de Deux and Dressage classes and displays this weekend.” Entry to the event will be free for the whole family and there will be there will be food vendors on site.
Three times the fun on show By XAVIER SMERDON THE Wyndham Cultural Centre is getting ready to welcome one of its busiest times of the year. Three major theatrical events will be held at the centre over the next two months with Calendar Girls, Mr McGee and the Biting Flea and The Road Trip all hitting the stage. Councillor Peter Maynard said with so many great shows
on, now was the perfect time to see a show. “Whether you’re looking for the perfect Mother’s Day present or somewhere to take the kids, there’s something for everyone at the Cultural Centre,” Cr Maynard said. “These shows are just the tip of the iceberg for what’s on offer. We have a whole year of entertainment, including musicals, comedy, drama and chil-
dren’s entertainment available.” “The Wyndham Cultural Centre is a facility that the community should be proud of, as it is a true arts hub. With performing arts in the theatre and fine arts in the gallery there are a wide range of things to do, right in the heart of the Werribee City Centre.” For more information, visit www.wyncc.com.au or contact the box office on 8734 6000.

CITY West Falcons continued their unbeaten run in the Victorian Netball League last week, smashing Fed Uni Ballarat Pride by 38 goals. The Falcons dominated the match from start to finish and posted some of their biggest scoring numbers for the season along the way. While Ballarat was able to hit the scoreboard, there was no defensive pressure the other way and the Falcons did as they pleased. City West scored 20, 24, 21 and 15 goals in each of the four quarters respectively. Kathleen Knott enjoyed a day out in the goal third, scoring 49 from 54 attempts at 91 per cent shooting accuracy. She was well supported by Alice Teague-Neeld who shot a perfect 18 goals from 18 shots while Julia Woolley was also impressive with 13 goals of her own. The result sees City West move to a 9-0 win/loss record for the season, two games clear on top of the VNL Championship ladder. When round 10 gets underway this Wednesday, the Falcons will take on DC North East Blaze. Elsewhere in the VNL, VU Western Lightning suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels. The Lightning was shut down defensively throughout the match and was able to score just 24 goals. There was no such trouble at the other end of the court as Yarra Valley continued to hit the scoreboard on its way to the 5524 victory. The 31 goal loss is Lightning’s fifth of the season and puts the club under pressure to make finals. VU is in eighth spot on the ladder and it is part of a group of seven teams from third to eighth fighting for the last two finals places in the top four. This week will see the Lightning take on third placed Peninsula Waves in what is now a must win match.
for Bulldogs FOOTSCRAY is sixth on the table in Men’s Premier League Hockey after going down 1-0 to the Melbourne Cricket Club in a mid-week round three fixture at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday. Coming into the clash on the back of an impressive 4-1 win over Waverley last week, the Bulldogs couldn’t follow up against the MCC, which scored its first win in Wednesday night’s clash. Meanwhile Altona sits third on the table and will host Southern United on Saturday. Footscray will also play host to Camberwell. In the Women’s Premier League Altona powered over the top of Powerhouse St Kilda with a 4-1 win at the SNHC last Tuesday night. The win was Altona’s first for 2014 and catapulted the Seagulls into ninth place on the table. Footscray is fourth on the ladder after drawing with the MCC 1-1. In Men’s Vic League One action, Werribee went down 3-1 to the GD Warriors on Thursday night. The Tigers are ninth. THIS Saturday will be about more than just four points for the Caroline Springs Football Club. The Lakers are hosting North Footscray in an Anzac Day weekend blockbuster clash. As well as the under-18 and reserve grade matches, there will be a special ceremony at 2.05pm which will include the last post, a minute’s silence, the laying of the wreaths and playing of the national anthem. Following that the two teams will do battle, with the winner likely to jump into the competition’s top four. Caroline Springs vice-president Terry Azzopardi said the club was looking forward to the special day. “We have formed an ongoing community partnership with the Caroline Springs RSL where we would like to highlight that group and also continue this game going on an annual basis,” he said. “We are just calling out for all local exservice men and women and anyone who has done their time in the services to come out and enjoy the day.”

St Albans loves big stage By LIAM TWOMEY ST ALBANS showed a liking for the big stage last week, taking out the Western Region Football League’s Good Friday blockbuster. The Saints smashed Hoppers Crossing to the tune of 83 points at Hogans Road Oval. After suffering a shock loss the week prior against Albion, St Albans were switched on from the getgo and were quick to make it count on the scoreboard. The Saints rushed to a 17-point lead at the opening break as the Warriors found it tough going in front of goal. It was more of the same in the second quarter. Only inaccurate kicking kept Hoppers Crossing in the game. Despite earning eight more scoring shots for the quarter, St Albans were only able to increase their lead
by 13 points. However, Hoppers Crossing were unable to make the most of the missed opportunities in the second half and the margin continued to balloon. A nine-goal to one final term was the icing on the cake for St Albans, with the Saints able to celebrate their first win of the division one season. It was also the club’s first win under new coach Marcus Barclay. The 20.11 (131) to 7.6 (48) loss is Hoppers Crossing’s second of the year. Joel West and Lachlan Baddeley were outstanding around the ground for St Albans while up forward Matt Quigley, Tim Jenkins and Dion Lawson kicked three goals each. On a tough day for the Warriors, Jordan Mead continued to work hard and was among the best for his team. The result sees St Albans move
Tim Jenkins was a stand-out for St Albans in Good Friday football. 85095 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI into sixth spot on the division one ladder, while Hoppers Crossing drops to eighth. When round three begins this week, St Albans will take on the un-
defeated Spotswood while Hoppers Crossing will travel to Port Melbourne. Because of the Easter long weekend, there was no other WRFL football played on the weekend.
SATURDAY’S match is just the start of a new tradition for Caroline Springs. Azzopardi says the club is keen to make it even bigger next year. “The main one is going to be next year,” he said. “We have some things planned like putting some permanent plaques up and things like that which we are actually organising from a grant through the government. This year is actually more of a starting point.” As well as the Anzac Day celebrations, the game will take on extra significance with both teams being early season premiership contenders. “North Footscray is probably another team that is competing for third or fourth spot with us after coming down from division one last year,” Azzopardi said. “There is no doubt it will be a big game, especially with the split happening after round 13.” ANDREW Browne again proved his worth to Keilor with a dominant six-goal haul that helped the Blues to a season-defining 16-point Good Friday win over Strathmore. Browne was the clear best-on-ground yet again as the Blues rocketed their way to the top of the Essendon District Football League’s Premier Division ladder against a fellow undefeated and morefancied Strathmore outfit. Five of Browne’s six goals came in the second and third quarters with Dean Putt taking most of the rucking duties while the former Richmond big man parked himself in the goal square and ran riot inside the forward 50, kicking all of his goals from set shots. “It was a bit of a roll of the dice to put Browne in the full forward position for all that second and third quarter but it certainly paid dividends so from where we sit we just thought we had a great chance to win the game because of that,” Keilor coach Mick McGuane said.

Ellis soars for Jets By ADEM SARICAOGLU COREY Ellis has emerged as an early leading candidate to join the growing list of Western Jets to end up on an AFL list in the senior ranks. After showing plenty of bottom-age promise in 12 games for the Jets in 2013, the former Keilor junior has flown out of the blocks to start his draft-eligible year. In four games so far this TAC Cup season, the 17-year-old has averaged nearly 25 disposals a game and has been named among the Jets’ best on three occasions, but was still one of their better contributors the one time he was left out. Ellis is happy with his early-season form through the midfield, but told Star he wants to improve on some of his defensive work as the season progresses. “I’m pretty happy with how I’m going, I’m playing some consistent footy,” Ellis said. “We’re just not getting the wins we need and hopefully that’ll turn around, but (I’m) just pretty happy with how I’m going so far. “I think just playing in the midfield and being able to use my aerobic ability and get to stoppages and getting near the ball as much as possible (is working well), and when I go back just being able to run off my man and get a bit of the ball up-field and being able to use it up there a bit more, too. “With my defensive running, locating a man from the stoppage or whenever they have possession, I’ve just got to try to keep my man to a low number of touches as possible - and just make sure I can stick to an opponent and keep him down.” Ellis hit top form in his most recent outing for the Jets against the Northern Territory, slamming home two goals and gathering 35 touches and 11 marks for the day. Though the Territory struggled throughout that game, Ellis said it was his best ever performance in the blue and gold. “That was probably my best game for the Jets,” he said. “I was just able to find some space and get used and sneak forward and kick a couple and it all just kind of worked on the day.” Ellis hopes his recent form will warrant a callup for Vic Metro later this year and the ultimate goal is to follow in the footsteps of former Jets team-mate and fellow Keilor alumni James Sicily onto an AFL list come season’s end. Trial games for Vic Metro and Vic Country were held over the weekend with final squads expected to be announced within the coming few weeks.
Seagulls’ egg-cellent Easter show By LIAM TWOMEY WILLIAMSTOWN celebrated the Easter weekend with a huge 70-point win against Richmond. With the match moved to Burbank Oval last week, the Seagulls made the most of their bonus home game and quickly got on top in the contest. Williamstown dominated the opening quarter, kicking 6.4 to Richmond’s 2.1 to take a 27-point lead into the break. Despite fewer goals coming in the second term, there was no letting up on the pressure as the Seagulls continued to have the better of the big moments. Defensively, Williamstown held the Tigers to just one goal while adding another two themselves to increase the lead. If Richmond thought the first half was tough, the Tigers were in for a nasty surprise after the break with the pressure increasing further. Williamstown piled on 11 goals to five to seal the 19.15 (129) to 8.11 (59) win. Jake Owen and William Wheeler were outstanding for the Seagulls up forward, both finishing the match with three goals. Scott Clouston also provided a good target on his way to two goals. Around the ground, Owen, Ben Jolley and Nick Meese were all among Williamstown’s best players. On what was a tough day for Richmond, Todd Banfield worked hard and was named best on ground for the Tigers. The weekend’s result is Williamstown’s second win in a row after dropping its first two games of the season. This week will see the Seagulls host Port Melbourne at Burbank Oval.

Even Daw not enough By LIAM TWOMEY A FIVE-goal haul from Majak Daw wasn’t enough to give Werribee an upset win against Port Melbourne on Saturday. The Tigers fought hard throughout the contest before eventually going down by 13 points, 16.11 (107) to 14.10 (94). Despite entering the game as underdogs, Werribee made a great start to the match at North Port Oval. After conceding the first two goals, the Tigers lifted their pressure around the contest and started to make an impact on the scoreboard. Werribee kicked five of the next six goals to take a 13-point lead into quarter-time. However, after the break, Port Melbourne was able to wrestle back the momentum. The Borough started to win a lot more of the 50/50 contests and clearances on their way to seven second quarter goals. After looking dangerous Sam Martyn sends Werribee forward with a big kick against Port inside 50 throughout the first Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI quarter, Werribee struggled to Melbourne. 118885
make the most of their chances in the second term and converted just one goal. The 22-point half-time margin was always going to be tough to overcome but the Tigers went down swinging. With Daw providing a big target up forward, Werribee went toe to toe with Port Melbourne throughout the second half. Thanks to a four-goal to two final term, the Tigers managed to cut the margin to 13 points before time ran out. As well as Daw’s haul, Ben Warren and Thomas Gribble kicked two goals each for Werribee while around the ground Scott Sherlock was a standout. The result sees the Tigers slip to a 1-2 win/loss record for the season after three games. When round four gets underway this weekend Werribee will take on the Northern Blues in a night game at Avalon Airport Oval.

Bees sting By ADEM SARICAOGLU WERRIBEE City’s strong start as a top flight Victorian soccer club continued on Saturday night with an impressive 4-3 road win against fellow National Premier Leagues newcomers, the Goulburn Valley Suns. The Suns were winless coming into the round five clash but the 2-2 Bees still had a formidable task on their hands, making the two-and-a-half-hour trip up the highway for the Easter Saturday fixture. In a match that ultimately saw seven goals make their way through to the back of the net, City’s Anthony Ragusa opened the account with a strike 14 minutes into the contest. Then, an own-goal that last came off City’s Steven Cudrig levelled the ledger at 1-1 seven minutes later. Despite that setback, the Bees ran riot for the remainder of the opening half and added three more goals to their tally

through Zois Galanopoulos, Ryan Filipovic and Oliver Rowland. Coming into the second half 4-1 up, Werribee City slowed down to allow the Suns back into the contest. A goal in the 52nd minute to Craig Carley pegged it back to 4-2 before former Melbourne Victory man Kristian Sarkies converted a 76th-minute penalty to set up a thrilling finish at McEwan Reserve in Shepparton. However, the Bees were able to hold on for their third win from five starts, catapulting them into the top six ahead of this Saturday’s away clash with Northcote City. Coach Nino Ragusa was pleased that his side got the three points it came for, but remained disappointed with the second half fadeout. “The result is excellent, that’s exactly what we went up there for and we prepared for it very well but the actual per-
formance was a bit Jekyll and Hyde, so to speak,” he said. “We had a good first half and then in the second half, we pretty much went to sleep but credit to them, they really came after us. “They didn’t throw the towel in and they really came at us.” Ragusa down-played his side’s promising start to the year, reminding his boys much remains to be learned as the season wears on. “To be honest I wouldn’t say they’ve completely adapted to the top league,” Ragusa said. “I think they’ve still got to learn a lot of things. For example (Saturday) night 4-1 up at half-time, they should be really able to one, control the game and two, actually bury them even further because defensively (Goulburn Valley) are quite poor. “But to be with three wins, I’m ecstatic and I think honestly we’re travelling a little bit beyond ourselves at the moment.”

Doghouse

KEVIN HILLIER
ALTONA Magic coach Pece Stojevski was forced to push the restart button on the 2014 season shortly before it kicked off. In December Stojevski began preparing a team for what he thought was Magic’s inaugural season as part of Football Federation Victoria’s new National Premier Leagues concept. However, the club was not included as part of the final cut, catching Stojevski off-guard ahead of the season’s launch. “We were supposed to be in the NPL this year but somewhere along the line the documents were lodged a little late,” Stojevski explained. “I’d been building a team for the NPL since December and it was a very good team. It was a multi-cultural team and very strong so that we could compete in the NPL. “But as soon as we found out the NPL wasn’t on for the players, 10 or so first 11 senior players left. They went to play in the NPL, so that’s most of the players. “Four players went to Werribee (City) and some all over Victoria, so I had to start building a new team and this is our second team we have in now.” Three matches into the State League One North-West season, Magic sits sixth on the table with one win and a draw. After beating Fitzroy 1-0 in the opening round, Magic fell to a heavy 2-4 loss away to Keilor Park. Then last weekend came the much-anticipated local derby with neighbour Altona East Phoenix, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Paisley Park - a venue shared by Magic and Phoenix. “We should’ve won,” Stojevski said. “We copped a goal from a loss of concentration, we created heaps of chances, we’re a much better team and we should’ve won very easily. “It hurt me a little bit but I have to put up with it because we’re inexperienced and I haven’t had much time to work with them.”
Good Friday a mixed blessing
Altona Magic was hoping to be part of the NPL this year but missed the final cut-off. 98779 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT Still learning about the credentials of his newlook and young squad, Stojevski isn’t yet sure how far Magic can go this season, but is hoping to be up there when the whips are cracking at the business end. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I can’t predict the future. Our ambition was to win the league this year. “That’s what the team was built on. Not being in the NPL hurt us, so it’s not easy but I hope the players can respond.”
WESTERN Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is very much in favour of the Bulldogs playing footy on Good Friday, and when the discussion takes place at the AFL Commission I am sure Peter’s point of view will carry some weight. I am undecided on the issue. I worked Good Friday on SEN and opinion on talkback was pretty firm that there should be an AFL game, but who plays is divided according to your club loyalty. There is an argument that it gives local footy a chance to showcase its competition - and Hoppers Crossing and St Albans have grabbed that chance in the last two years. The clubs have raised money for the Good Friday appeal and played in front of bigger than usual suburban crowds, which is a win-win. I would love to hear your thoughts, especially Bulldogs fans. My concern is that the game will be used as another ‘blockbuster’ game to falsely boost crowd numbers and the Bulldogs will not be seen as a big enough drawcard to be one of the teams.
THE Bulldogs recently hosted the potential future batch of father-son recruits at Victoria University Whitten Oval. For supporters like me it is the last bastion of the traditions of the game and the romance of it is something we love but the game no longer courts. How good would it be to see these names on the back of a modern Red, White and Blue jumper - Kennedy, Kellett, Romero, West, MacPherson plus another Cordy, Wallis and Liberatore? I hope football never completely extinguishes this rule because it is another unique aspect of our game - and something the rule makers need to remember is it is our game. DAVID Parkin is a great of the game as a player, a coach and a fan and he will be speaking at the Werribee pre-match dinner this Saturday night. Footy fans would be mad to miss hearing his thoughts on the game. Ring the club on 9741 6688.
NORTH Footscray Football Club is working very hard to change the club’s fortunes on and off the ground after a few tough years. Former Hoppers crossing players Shaun Borlase and Matty Walsh have taken over the coaching reigns and brought a few of their mates from Hogans Rd with them in David Clonan, Rob Cavka and David Mitchell, to name a few. Unfortunately for ‘Mitch’, his playing days may be over after badly breaking his ankle in round one. Off field they have a comedy night this Saturday featuring Lehmo, Des Dowling and Terry North. Tickets are available through Ashleigh on 0420 673 034.

ARE there any more passionate and vocal supporters in Australian Rules football than those that follow Port Melbourne in the VFL? If there is please let me know. While their numbers have dropped off over the years their decibel volume and passion for the game has certainly not waned. I saw this first hand last Saturday when Werribee travelled to North Port Oval. Their boys can do no wrong, even the ones with ponytails. The umpires go from saint to sinner in the blink of an eye and the opposition players are in their sights from start to finish, but it is a great atmosphere to watch the game. The majority of Werribee and Williamstown supporters are quiet and polite. It would be good to bottle some of the ‘Port Passion’ and give it to the Tigers’ and Seagulls’ faithful.
