Two of the best

RSL OUR TRUE BLUE MATES

By XAVIER SMERDON

By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO

TWO of the West’s oldest and most respected war veterans will be among the thousands of residents who will gather to remember the ultimate sacrifices made by fallen soldiers. At 103 years old, James Crouch is the oldest WWII veteran living in Werribee. Born in England, he spent most of his time in the war in Italy where he fired 25-pounder howitzers, the major British field gun at the time. He was later transferred to Greece and was about to be sent to India when his wife was injured in a car accident. Mr Crouch moved to Australia in 1977 and joined Werribee RSL. He has taken part in every Anzac Day Dawn Service at the cenotaph every year since. Just a few kilometres away, another veteran has become known as one of the most revered members of his community. Bordy Weeku is a Karen refugee who fought for the British army in World War II after the Japanese invaded Burma with the help of the Burma Independence Army. He joined the army in 1937 at just 18 years old, before training as a soldier in India. The 94-year-old spent almost 20 years in a Burmese refugee camp, surrounded by barbed wire and living on basic rations, before moving to Werribee in 2007. He is now the oldest and most respected member of Wyndham’s Karen community, which is made up of members of the second-largest ethnic group from Burma. Mr Weeku told Star that he was proud of his efforts during WWII and he was now enjoying his life in Werribee. Last year around 6000 people attended the Dawn Service in Werribee, the largest crowd Werribee RSL President Daryl Ryan had ever seen in his 40 years with the organisation. “It’s great to know that so many people recognise the sacrifices that were made by people that went to war,” Mr Ryan said.

AS people from Melbourne’s West prepare to commemorate Anzac Day this Friday, veterans continue to remind us of the importance of the local RSL. President of the Caroline Springs RSL subbranch Peter Burquest told Star the RSL remained a very important institution for returned service personnel, despite its popularity declining in recent years. Already the Caroline Springs branch, which was officially opened in February this year, has gained widespread support from the community. “The response has been great, we already have just over 100 members in the past few months,” Mr Burquest said. The Vietnam veteran said RSLs were established to assist veterans and their families after serving their country. “We need to maintain what the RSL is all about, we are hoping to attract the younger generation to become members ... eventually military personnel will run out but Anzac Day still needs to be held dear as one of the most important days of the year.” In recent years two RSLs in Melbourne’s West have been forced to shut their doors. The Maribyrnong-Maidstone RSL closed after the club discovered it was $57,000 in debt, while Spotswood RSL faced closure in 2012. President of Altona RSL Tom Crooks said despite recent closures the RSL still played a key role in the lives of veterans and their families. “The RSL was all about the welfare of veterans but it has become a lot more ... to me the most important thing is getting the younger generation involved,” Mr Crooks said. “We explain to them that they are the future, it’s them that will keep us going. “It’s all about mateship, we all get together ... Vietnam vets, soldiers returning from Afghanistan and East Timor. “We’re trying to get away from the old man’s club, but when an RSL gets into trouble we work together.”

103-year-old James Crouch and 94-year-old Bordy Weeku. “We have freedom of the press and we have freedom of speech thanks to what some of these men and women did during WWI and WWII and thanks to what soldiers are still doing overseas today.” Mr Ryan has been president of the RSL for a total of 29 years, and after he returned from Vietnam injured, he said it was important for

the community to be accepting of all returning soldiers. “A lot of sub-branches wouldn’t accept Vietnam veterans, but Werribee was different. They accepted me since day one,” he said. “We’re very proud of the sacrifices that all of our members have made.”

Our part in history By CHARLENE MACAULAY WORLD WAR I and the Gallipoli Campaign are considered to be defining moments in Australian history. It was also a defining moment for the thousands of young fighters across the West who fought for their country. One of those was 18-year-old Thomas Duff Anderson Aitken. At an age where people nowadays get their licence and are legally allowed to drink, the Yarraville resident joined the Australian Imperial Force and was assigned to the 31st Battery, 8th BA Brigade. The qualified fitter rose to the rank of gunner as he was deployed to various areas, including France and Belgium. He died of wounds sustained in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917 as part of the 2nd ANZAC Corps, aged 20.

Meanwhile, Sunshine resident Leslie Raymond Hensbergh enlisted as a 19-year-old brass finisher in February 1916 and was deployed to France and England as a private. He was reported wounded and missing in France in May 1917 - only 15 months after enlisting - and was confirmed to be killed in action in December that year. Then there’s 21-year-old Robert George Blackburne, who joined in January 1916 with two years of Senior Cadets experience in Williamstown. He started off in Engineer Reinforcements 2nd MD and worked across France and England before returning to Australia at the end of 1918. Thomas, Leslie and Robert were only three of thousands of young men across the West and Australia who joined the war effort in a showing of national pride and bravery. One hundred years on, we will continue to remember them.

YOUR SONS ARE OUR SONS NOW By YASEMIN TALAT ANZAC Day is a time to commemorate the Johnnies and the Mehmets, with Australians and Turkish Australians coming together to remember their forefathers this Anzac Day. President of the Turkish SubBranch of the Victorian RSL, Ramazan Altintas, said it was an important time for the Turkish community in Australia to come together with their fellow Australians and remember the lives lost at war and the mateship formed between the Johnnies and the Mehmets. “This is a time where we can honour, remember, and a time for us all to reflect with pride on our history and values that unite us as Australians and Turks,” Mr Altintas said.

“Anzac Day for Turks is not only the day of their proud victory against all odds to reassert their right to nationhood, but also their admiration for the valorous troops of ANZAC they encountered in the test of fire,” he said. “Anzac Day for Australians is the day of pride for an identity proven without doubt and the merit of a nationhood forged in battle.” “Yes the Johnnies and the Mehmets fought against each other in 1915, however the conduct of friendship and comradeship was existent among them all.” This year marks the 99th anniversary since the World War I battle of Gallipoli commenced on 25 April 1915. As part of the commemoration the

Turkish members of the Turkish Subbranch of the Victorian RSL, as well as Turkish members from RSLs across Victoria and the wider Turkish community will join the Anzac March and ceremony. The Melbourne Turkish Community Centre and the Turkish Sub-Branch of the Victorian RSL will also host a commemorative evening to mark the anniversary. “The Johnnies and the Mehmets portrayed a sense of duty and courage that continue to inspire us,” Mr Altintas said. “Their stories of sacrifice and service illuminate the highest virtues of the human spirits.” Next year, Mr Altintas, with the help and support of the Australian

and Turkish governments, is hoping to erect an Australian and Turkish friendship memorial sculpture at the Shrine of Remembrance to mark the 100th anniversary of WWI, Anzac Day and to pay tribute to all the soldiers and their bravery. “Anzac Day is always going to be, for each Turk and Aussie, a day to prove to a friend and foe that those who have fallen in 1915 have confirmed our right to survive as nations,” Mr Altintas said. “May they rest in peace as their ideals continue to be upheld by each and every new Turkish and Australian generation.” The then Turkish president and Gallipoli veteran Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s 1934 tribute commemorating the loss

of Anzac and Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us Where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away the tears; Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.”

Rotary a life-saver By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO A WILLIAMSTOWN Rotary Club funding project has resulted in the development of a potential new treatment for leukaemia sufferers. Founder of the Friends-R-4 Rotary Project, Dr Ronnie Goldberg, said the venture was undertaken in 2008 after a string of his friends were diagnosed with cancer, in a bid to offer significant and lasting help for patients. “I thought it wasn’t enough to just drop in to the hospital to say hello, we had to do something,” Dr Goldberg OAM said. Dr Goldberg said the Hobsons Bay community generously opened their hearts and their wallets and raised enough money to see the creation of a possibly life-saving treatment. The former Williamstown dentist told Star the pre-clinical results indicated a 20 per cent cure rate and 50 per cent remission rate using experimental models that reflected human leukaemia refractory to conventional chemotherapy. “According to lead researcher, Professor Ricky Johnstone from Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the study successfully targeted and killed blood cancer cells in a laboratory model of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL),” Dr Golberg said. ALL is the most common childhood cancer and can also be a devastating disease in adults. “Professor Johnstone added that while the research was in its early stages, it was exciting that one of the drugs used in the study was already approved for treatment of adults with cancers, and the second was in clinical development.” Dr Goldberg said the moment he discovered the funds raised might one day save a life was something he would never forget. “It sent shivers up my spine, just to think of that something our little club had achieved. “No-one could imagine the ramifications. “It’s incredible - we’re in a working class area and they’re just so generous, generous in Continued page 2 spirit.”

Eye on the future SCIENCEWORKS put on a show-stopping exhibition last week as youngsters enjoyed the last remaining days of holidays. Students, like Alec and his robotic dog, had an opportunity to look into the future and explore how new materials will change houses, cities and clothes. They also pondered what food will be available and how space will be used around Earth. The popular museum has a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions on display throughout the year. 118485 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI

Slow start for prices By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO THE Real Estate Institute of Victoria’s latest median house prices have revealed a slow start to the year across Hobsons Bay. Williamstown experienced a significant drop in its March 2014 median house price to $895,000 after hitting an unprecedented high of $1 million in the December 2013 quarter. Altona, Altona Meadows, Laverton and Seabrook all had less than 30 sales. Both Altona North and Newport recorded decreases compared to data from the December 2013 quarter. In December 2013 Altona North recorded a median price of $547,500 compared to $531,500 this quarter. Meanwhile Newport recorded a median house price of $733,000 compared to $741,750 last December. In comparison, Melbourne’s house and unit prices continued to grow steadily. REIV chief executive officer Enzo Raimondo said the market saw a strong second half of 2013, while the March quarter revealed a more moderate growth. Mr Raimondo added that the March quarter growth was 3.7 per cent, compared to 5.3 per cent in the December quarter. “The market is still growing, but at a much more moderate pace and is far from what would be called a housing ‘boom’,” he said. He added that the auction market remained relatively healthy with a surge in the number of auctions and a clearance rate of 72 per cent in the March quarter, falling to just below 70 per cent in April.

face Plan to end ambo war Hoons their doom By XAVIER SMERDON

THE stalemate between the State Government and Victorian ambulance paramedics would be ended under a Labor Government, the Opposition has declared. Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said last week the Labor Party would end the dispute over pay immediately by referring the matter to an independent umpire to rule on. “The way to fix our broken

ambulance system is to end Denis Napthine’s war on paramedics,” Mr Andrews said. “This dispute should be sent to the independent umpire now. If Denis Napthine won’t, then a Labor Government will.” Shadow Health Minister Gavin Jennings also said the stalemate was putting people’s lives at risk. “Under Denis Napthine, too many people are waiting too long

for an ambulance and lives are at risk,” Mr Jennings said. “We will work with our paramedics - we believe in co-operation, not condemnation.” The Labor Party claimed in a statement that 27 per cent of ambulances were failing to reach emergency cases on time, nearly 25 per cent of ambulance transfers to hospitals were taking longer than 40 minutes and a 2013 survey showed that 1500 paramedics were planning

on leaving the service in the next five years. Last month, following a ballot held by the Ambulance Employees Australia union, it was announced that union members would be able to speak publicly about the pay dispute under protected action. Star contacted the Health Minister David Davis’s office for comment but they did not respond before deadline.

POLICE are clamping down on hoon drivers in a new pilot program that will see cars impounded at residential addresses. The six-month trial will see specially trained Highway Patrol officers determine whether a hoon driver can have their vehicle immobilised by wheel clamps or steering locks at a private address instead of having the car taken to an impound facility. The pilot is being undertaken to determine if immobilisation is a viable, effective and sustainable alternative to impoundment, and will complement the current impoundment program already in place across metropolitan Melbourne. The initiative will run until 30 September. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill said Victoria Police had always had the power to immobilise a vehicle under the Road Safety Act 1986, however recent legislative changes made it possible to outsource immobilisation to contractors. “Victoria Police impounded around 4600 vehicles last year and we are projecting a similar number of impounds this year,” he said. “This pilot will determine what the benefits are to the community and the police. “We believe immobilisation will reduce our vehicle storage costs, but more importantly, it will alleviate officers having to wait around for tow trucks and get them back on the road. “A sticker will be placed on the vehicle outlining the fines associated with tampering with the immobilisation device or unauthorised relocation of the vehicle. Hooning includes anti-social road behaviour, including excessive speeding, repeat drink driving or disqualified driving. Since July 2011, police have had the power to seize a vehicle involved in hooning and impound or immobilise it for 30 days. If a driver is found guilty of three hoon-related offences inside three years, their vehicle can be permanently forfeited by the court.

POLICE seized over 800 litres of petrol and arrested two men last Wednesday following an investigation into a series of petrol thefts across Melbourne. Search warrants were executed by detectives from the Wyndham, Melton and Hobsons Bay Vehicle Crime Reduction Teams at three properties across Melbourne’s West. Two properties were located on Eyre Street, Melton, and the third property was on Snowden Street in Laverton. A 32-year-old Melton man and a 34-year-old Laverton man were arrested and are currently being interviewed. A hydroponic cannabis set-up was also located at the Melton address and externally grown cannabis, other drugs, cars trailers and weapons were also seized. The investigation has been running for around three months and police believe at least 48 incidents are involved in the series. The thefts have occurred at suburbs right across Melbourne and date back to July 2013, with the total amount of petrol stolen believed to be valued at over $12,000. URBAN dance enthusiasts will soon have a new school where they can perfect their art with the opening of BeatBak Dance Crew in Altona Meadows. Director Kyzie Kathleen said the new school would offer a range of urban dance styles including hip-hop, dance hall, crumping and breakdancing, along with singing and stage production lessons. The trained singer, dancer and choreographer, said the school would provide classes to all ages and is hoping to gather a dance crew to perform in upcoming festivals and competitions. Kyzie also said the school hoped to present a more affordable avenue for parents wanting to give their children the chance to dance, saying it was a great way to learn about teamwork and mateship. “All of our choreographers are professionals in the industry and provide elite level training,” Kyzie said. “We will be adding new programs throughout the year and hope to get involved in hip-hop competitions and events throughout the year.” And the passionate performer is keen to give back to the community, saying the school would be involved in charities events. BeatBak will initially be offering basic classes but will expand to crew classes in the term two holidays. Dancers can attend the registration days this Wednesday and Thursday from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at the Altona Meadows Community Centre, 28-36 Trafalgar Ave, Altona Meadows.

City’s race fight HOBSONS Bay City Council continues to campaign against racism and is calling on residents to do the same. Last year the council signed an agreement with the Australian Human Rights Commission to endorse and support the National Anti-Racism Campaign: RACISM. IT STOPS WITH ME. The strategy aims to address racism experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. This year, the campaign continues with a range of supporting activities over the coming 12 months. The council is urging residents with an opinion on di-

versity, belonging, difference or racism, to come along to the Talking Difference Portable Studio. The studio is on loan from the Immigration Museum between April and June 2014 and will travel to four different sites in Hobsons Bay during its time here including Altona North Community Library (Monday, 7 April to Sunday, 27 April), Laverton Community Hub (Monday, 28 April to Monday, 19 May), Williamstown Library (Tuesday, 20 May to Sunday 8 June) and Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre (Tuesday 10 June to Friday 27 June). Mayor of Hobsons Bay Sandra Wilson said the studio was a

welcoming space which offers people a chance to talk about what’s important to them. “While cultural diversity is central to our national identity, the reality is that too many people in Australia experience discrimination and racism on a regular basis,” Cr Wilson said. “Racism locks people out of social and economic opportunities. It costs workplaces and our economy and it works against our goal of building fair, inclusive communities. “The Talking Difference Studio uses new media to create a dialog about cultural identity, difference and racism.” The studio will be accessible during the site’s opening hours and no booking is required.

A ONCE-popular organisation is making a comeback in Altona and hopes to attract young girls from across Hobsons Bay. Girl Guides is returning to the area and leader Karen Milton said it is the perfect extracurricular activity for young girls looking to improve their social skills and boost their confidence. Karen said it is also a great way for parents to interact with other families in their area. And she should know.

Twenty-eight years ago, Karen took her daughter to her first Girl Guides meeting and now she is spearheading the launch of the latest franchise. “The girls learn social skills and we teach them about everyday events,” she told Star. “It’s not about knitting and sewing ... it’s about teaching self-confidence. There is an anti-bullying program ... it has changed a lot. “We really encourage outdoor activities and it’s a great way to bond and make friendships.”

She said the Guides program, open to girls aged five to 13 years, taught youngsters leadership skills and nurtured good community spirit. “It really is a lovely atmosphere, I’ve met most of my friends from the Guides.” Anyone interested in joining the group can attend the first meeting on Wednesday, 30 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Altona Guide Hall. An adult must attend the first meeting. For more information call Karen 0416 398 209.

Bearing the slogan “Need Before Greed”, hopeful protesters said there was still time to fight against the ultra highdensity development at the Port Phillip Woollen Mills site. The hotel, one of Victoria’s

oldest pubs, is slated for demolition to make way for a sixstorey, 83-dwelling apartment block. In December last year the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) approved the demolition of the hotel despite it being considered for state heritage listing. The decision reversed Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to allow the demolition earlier in the year. “If the Oriental can be demolished it gives you an idea of the scale of change that will sweep through Melbourne to satisfy the foreign investment market,” Mr Moase said. “The rally’s aim is to demonstrate community support

for the preservation of the Oriental Hotel to the Heritage Council. Residents and friends of Williamstown hope that the Heritage Council will object to VCAT’s recommendation that the hotel be demolished.” Mr Moase said if the proposed high-density dwellings were approved, safety, traffic congestion and noise levels would be just a few of the issues residents and businesses would have to deal with. “This isn’t a done deal yet. There’s still time to save the Oriental Hotel. “This hotel is part of Victoria’s heritage. It’s part of the story of our formation as a community. Once it’s gone, we can never get it back.”

Robbery attempt goes postal POLICE are appealing for public assistance following an attempted armed robbery at a postal outlet in West Footscray earlier this month. A man entered the store on Sunshine Rd around 5pm on Thursday 3 April. Holding a knife and a plastic bag, he approached the store manager and made a demand for cash. The staff member refused

and activated an alarm. The man then left the store without any money and ran east towards Aliwal St near the Tottenham Railway Station. No-one was injured during the incident and detectives from the Altona North Embona Taskforce are now investigating. The man is described as being between 20-30 years of age and perceived to be of Cauca-

sian appearance with short light brown hair. He has scabs on his cheeks and chin and red marks where it looked like he had picked or scratched his face. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black hooded jumper with a white Everlast logo and dark coloured pants. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Nathan Miles from Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue with the cat that had its ears Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI chopped. 118773

Eight lives left By YASEMIN TALAT ANIMAL cruelty is on the rise in the Western Suburbs with a recent spike in attacks towards cats and dogs. Founder of Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue Nathan Miles said neglect and cruelty towards animals, especially cats, was common in the Western Suburbs and urged pet owners to be more responsible. “It is more common than people think,” Mr Miles said. “We’ve had an increase in cases lately and we have had some really bad cases,” he said. “Particularly in Brimbank because there’s such a high stray cat population and a lot of irresponsible owners,” he said. “The community needs to be responsible and treat cats like

companion animals.” Mr Miles said cats were especially a target because the community did not value them as they did dogs. “Cats are seen in a different way to dogs in society,” Mr Miles said. “Dogs seem to be more valued.” The concern follows the most recent case last week, when a kitten was found in St Albans with its ears cut. Mr Miles said the kitten was tortured and then dumped, before it was found by a resident who contacted Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue. “It appears as though someone has taken a pair of scissors and chopped both ears,” Mr Miles said. “Our main emphasis is to get the cat fixed, de-sexed and mi-

cro-chipped and find it a home, where it will be well looked after,” he said. The kitten was being taken care of at the St Albans Vet clinic and has since been adopted by a Star reporter. Mr Miles said he hoped pet owners would be more aware of what could happen to their pets and to always be responsible. “This kitten didn’t need to be born, someone has been irresponsible and not de-sexed their cat and their cat has had kittens,” Mr Miles said. “This kitten has then either been given away or dumped and someone has been cruel to it,” he said. Mr Miles said pet owners needed to ensure their pets were de-sexed, micro-chipped and kept within their home premises.

Dog fighting hoax warning POLICE are warning pet owners across Hobsons Bay to be wary of notices put up suggesting “thieves are taking all types of dogs for dog fighting.” On the Hobsons Bay Eyewatch page police confirmed that there were no reported cases of thefts of dogs across Hobsons Bay. They did however call on anyone who had information or

knowledge of such incidents to contact them. Police called on dog owners to take the usual precautions to keep pets safe, including ensuring dogs were safely kept on an owner’s property, making sure the yard where an animal lived was kept secure, ensuring pets were registered and microchipped so they could be returned if they did become lost or stolen, and never to leave

animals unattended in a public spaces. If a pet has been stolen - and is not just missing - contact police as soon as you become aware of it. Police said responsible pet ownership also included making sure a pet was walked or had playtime daily, whether by the owner or by someone who was paid to do it.

Very best in aged care By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO STAFF at Principal Hobson’s Bay have always known that their commitment to their clients is second to none - and now they can prove it. The Altona North aged care facility was recently named the winner of this year’s Domain Principal Group’s National Home of the Year. The award is based on the home’s work in improving the quality of life for residents and staff. Manager Wendy Benness

said staff members were delighted after winning the coveted award, which was open to 55 homes across the country. “It is, however, not just our staff who are the winners - the real winners are our residents who continually benefit from the range of innovative and caring programs which are incorporated at the homes,” Ms Benness said. “Having fun and laughter is central to the home, and staff have not only developed an excellent program of activities to keep everyone engaged, but have had some positive spin-

offs such as lowering staff turnover, creating a more enjoyable work environment and no time lost due to any injuries.” The award is given to the home that best demonstrates the quality of its care, its financial sustainability, excellence in people management and community involvement. “We’re a strong team at Principal Hobsons Bay and we all work towards our goals of resident care and making a difference in people’s lives. We are very proud to take this award home with us.”

Take a look at the Chook THE Chooky Dancers are coming to Williamstown Town Hall next month for a one-night only performance. The event, to be held on Thursday 8 May, is part of Arts at your Doorstep - the Hobsons Bay City Council’s annual performing arts program. In 2007, Djuki Mala, affectionately known as The Chooky Dancers, burst onto the inter-

national arena with a YouTube video that went viral. For over a decade, the dance innovators have been exploring and re-establishing the notions of contemporary Aboriginal performance. Hailing from Galiwin’ku Community (Elcho Island) in North East Arnhem Land, Djuki Mala has again teamed up with creative producer and artistic

director Joshua Bond to create a show full of excitement for the whole family. Djuki Mala are known and loved for their acrobatics and diverse flavours of dance and theatre and their own keen sense of humour. Newport resident Fabian Lapman will be performing as part of this year’s Melbourne Picture: SUPPLIED International Comedy Festival. 117672

Fabian aims for laughs By NATALIE GALLENTI-BREKALO

Fre e

A NEWPORT comedian is promising fans a “one-of-akind” performance as part of this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Fabian Lapman and The Actual Musicians will present The Robot is Killing Me at the Northcote Town Hall from 1 April to 18 April. Lapman told Star the show promised to be a “one-of-akind fusion that is stuffed into

m Se

ina

live music and stuffed into rock music”. “It’s got it all, if you just see one show see this one.” Describing his latest show as a showcase of fantastical characters and great rock and roll, Lapman said performing had always been in his blood and was his career path since he was a child. The 30-year-old also writes, acts and does voiceovers and said, unlike other comedians,

e pu h t r to

his background in the performing arts meant all of his shows were as rehearsed as they could be. And it seems that Lapman has his sights firmly set on continuing on the comedic path and entertaining audiences with his impersonations and one-liners. “To be honest I now have no other viable life skills.” The Melbourne International Comedy Festival will be running until 20 April.

Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Ellis soars high By ADEM SARICAOGLU COREY Ellis has emerged as an early leading candidate to join the growing list of Western Jets to end up on an AFL list in the senior ranks. After showing plenty of bottomage promise in 12 games for the Jets in 2013, the former Keilor junior has flown out of the blocks to start his draft-eligible year. In four games so far this TAC Cup season, the 17-year-old has averaged nearly 25 disposals a game and has been named among the Jets’ best on three occasions, but was still one of their better contributors the one time he was left out. Ellis is happy with his earlyseason form through the midfield, but told Star he wants to improve on some of his defensive work as the season progresses. “I’m pretty happy with how I’m going, I’m playing some consistent footy,” Ellis said. “We’re just not getting the wins we need and hopefully that’ll turn around, but (I’m) just pretty happy with how I’m going so far. “I think just playing in the midfield and being able to use my aerobic ability and get to stoppages and getting near the ball as much as possible (is working well), and when I go back just being able to run off my man and get a bit of the ball up-field and being able to use it up there a bit more, too. “With my defensive running, locating a man from the stoppage or whenever they have possession, I’ve just got to try to keep my man to a low number of touches as possible and just make sure I can stick to an opponent and keep him down.” Ellis hit top form in his most recent outing for the Jets against the Northern Territory, slamming home

Seagulls’ egg-cellent Easter show By LIAM TWOMEY

Corey Ellis has started the 2014 TAC Cup season in blistering form. 105187 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI two goals and gathering 35 touches and 11 marks for the day. Though the Territory struggled throughout that game, Ellis said it was his best ever performance in the blue and gold. “That was probably my best game for the Jets,” he said.

“I was just able to find some space and get used and sneak forward and kick a couple and it all just kind of worked on the day.” Ellis hopes his recent form will warrant a call-up for Vic Metro later this year and the ultimate goal is to follow in the footsteps of former Jets

team-mate and fellow Keilor alumni James Sicily onto an AFL list come season’s end. Trial games for Vic Metro and Vic Country were held over the weekend with final squads expected to be announced within the coming few weeks.

WILLIAMSTOWN celebrated the Easter weekend with a huge 70-point win against Richmond. With the match moved to Burbank Oval last week, the Seagulls made the most of their bonus home game and quickly got on top in the contest. Williamstown dominated the opening quarter, kicking 6.4 to Richmond’s 2.1 to take a 27-point lead into the break. Despite fewer goals coming in the second term, there was no letting up on the pressure as the Seagulls continued to have the better of the big moments. Defensively, Williamstown held the Tigers to just one goal while adding another two themselves to increase the lead. If Richmond thought the first half was tough, the Tigers were in for a nasty surprise after the break with the pressure increasing further. Williamstown piled on 11 goals to five to seal the 19.15 (129) to 8.11 (59) win. Jake Owen and William Wheeler were outstanding for the Seagulls up forward, both finishing the match with three goals. Scott Clouston also provided a good target on his way to two goals. Around the ground, Owen, Ben Jolley and Nick Meese were all among Williamstown’s best players. On what was a tough day for Richmond, Todd Banfield worked hard and was named best on ground for the Tigers. The weekend’s result is Williamstown’s second win in a row after dropping its first two games of the season. This week will see the Seagulls host Port Melbourne at Burbank Oval.

Even Daw not enough By LIAM TWOMEY

Sam Martyn sends Werribee forward with a big kick against Port Melbourne. 118885 Picture: DAMIAN VISENTINI

A FIVE-goal haul from Majak Daw wasn’t enough to give Werribee an upset win against Port Melbourne on Saturday. The Tigers fought hard throughout the contest before eventually going down by 13 points, 16.11 (107) to 14.10 (94). Despite entering the game as underdogs, Werribee made a great start to the match at North Port Oval. After conceding the first two goals, the Tigers lifted their pressure around the contest and started to make an impact on the scoreboard. Werribee kicked five of the next six goals to take a 13-point lead into quarter-time. However, after the break, Port Melbourne was able to wrestle back the momentum. The Borough started to win a lot more of the 50/50 contests and clearances on their way to seven second quarter goals.

After looking dangerous inside 50 throughout the first quarter, Werribee struggled to make the most of their chances in the second term and converted just one goal. The 22-point half-time margin was always going to be tough to overcome but the Tigers went down swinging. With Daw providing a big target up forward, Werribee went toe to toe with Port Melbourne throughout the second half. Thanks to a four-goal to two final term, the Tigers managed to cut the margin to 13 points before time ran out. As well as Daw’s haul, Ben Warren and Thomas Gribble kicked two goals each for Werribee while around the ground Scott Sherlock was a stand-out. The result sees the Tigers slip to a 1-2 win/loss record for the season after three games. When round four gets underway this weekend Werribee will take on the Northern Blues in a night game at Avalon Airport Oval.

Falcons hard to beat CITY West Falcons continued their unbeaten run in the Victorian Netball League last week, smashing Fed Uni Ballarat Pride by 38 goals. The Falcons dominated the match from start to finish and posted some of their biggest scoring numbers for the season along the way. While Ballarat was able to hit the scoreboard, there was no defensive pressure the other way and the Falcons did as they pleased. City West scored 20, 24, 21 and 15 goals in each of the four quarters respectively. Kathleen Knott enjoyed a day out in the goal third, scoring 49 from 54 attempts at 91 per cent shooting accuracy. She was well supported by Alice Teague-Neeld who shot a perfect 18 goals from 18 shots while Julia Woolley was also impressive with 13 goals of her own. The result sees City West move to a 9-0 win/loss record for the sea-

son, two games clear on top of the VNL Championship ladder. When round 10 gets underway this Wednesday, the Falcons will take on DC North East Blaze. Elsewhere in the VNL, VU Western Lightning suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels. The Lightning was shut down defensively throughout the match and was able to score just 24 goals. There was no such trouble at the other end of the court as Yarra Valley continued to hit the scoreboard on its way to the 55-24 victory. The 31 goal loss is Lightning’s fifth of the season and puts the club under pressure to make finals. VU is in eighth spot on the ladder and it is part of a group of seven teams from third to eighth fighting for the last two finals places in the top four. This week will see the Lightning take on third placed Peninsula Waves in what is now a must win match.

Good Friday a mixed blessing

Magic misses the mark

WESTERN Bulldogs president Peter Gordon is very much in favour of the Bulldogs playing footy on Good Friday, and when the discussion takes place at the AFL Commission I am sure Peter’s point of view will carry some weight. I am undecided on the issue. I worked Good Friday on SEN and opinion on talkback was pretty firm that there should be an AFL game, but who plays is divided according to your club loyalty. There is an argument that it gives local footy a chance to showcase its competition - and Hoppers Crossing and St Albans have grabbed that chance in the last two years. The clubs have raised money for the Good Friday appeal and played in front of bigger than usual suburban crowds, which is a win-win. I would love to hear your thoughts, especially Bulldogs fans. My concern is that the game will be used as another ‘blockbuster’ game to falsely boost crowd numbers and the Bulldogs will not be seen as a big enough drawcard to be one of the teams. NORTH Footscray Football Club is working very hard to change the club’s fortunes on and off the ground after a few tough years. Former Hoppers crossing players Shaun Borlase and Matty Walsh have taken over the coaching reigns and brought a few of their mates from Hogans Rd with them in David Clonan, Rob Cavka and David Mitchell, to name a few. Unfortunately for ‘Mitch’, his playing days may be over after badly breaking his ankle in round one. Off field they have a comedy night this Saturday featuring Lehmo, Des Dowling and Terry North. Tickets are available through Ashleigh on 0420 673 034.

By ADEM SARICAOGLU ALTONA Magic coach Pece Stojevski was forced to push the restart button on the 2014 season shortly before it kicked off. In December Stojevski began preparing a team for what he thought was Magic’s inaugural season as part of Football Federation Victoria’s new National Premier Leagues concept. However, the club was not included as part of the final cut, catching Stojevski off-guard ahead of the season’s launch. “We were supposed to be in the NPL this year but somewhere along the line the documents were lodged a little late,” Stojevski explained. “I’d been building a team for the NPL since December and it was a very good team. It was a multi-cultural team and very strong so that we could compete in the NPL. “But as soon as we found out the NPL wasn’t on for the players, 10 or so first 11 senior players left. They went to play in the NPL, so that’s most of the players. “Four players went to Werribee (City) and some all over Victoria, so I had to start building a new team and this is our second team we have in now.” Three matches into the State League One North-West season, Magic sits sixth on the table with one win and a draw. After beating Fitzroy 1-0 in the opening round, Magic fell to a heavy 2-4 loss away to Keilor Park. Then last weekend came the much-anticipated local derby with neighbour Altona East Phoenix, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Paisley Park - a venue shared by Magic and Phoenix. “We should’ve won,” Stojevski said. “We copped a goal from a loss of concentration, we created heaps of chances, we’re a much better team and we should’ve won very easily. “It hurt me a little bit but I have to put up with it because we’re inexperienced and I haven’t had much time to work with them.” Still learning about the credentials of his new-look and young squad, Stojevski isn’t yet sure how far Magic can go this season, but is hoping to be up there when the whips are cracking at the business end. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “I can’t predict the future. Our ambition was to win the league this year. “That’s what the team was built on. Not being in the NPL hurt us, so it’s not easy but I hope the players can respond.”

ARE there any more passionate and vocal supporters in Australian Rules football than those that follow Port Melbourne in the VFL? If there is please let me know. While their numbers have dropped off over the years their decibel volume and passion for the game has certainly not waned. I saw this first hand last Saturday when Werribee travelled to North Port Oval. Their boys can do no wrong, even the ones with ponytails. The umpires go from saint to sinner in the blink of an eye and the opposition players are in their sights from start to finish, but it is a great atmosphere to watch the game. The majority of Werribee and Williamstown supporters are quiet and polite. It would be good to bottle some of the ‘Port Passion’ and give it to the Tigers’ and Seagulls’ faithful. THE Bulldogs recently hosted the potential future batch of father-son recruits at Victoria University Whitten Oval. For supporters like me it is the last bastion of the traditions of the game and the romance of it is something we love but the game no longer courts. How good would it be to see these names on the back of a modern Red, White and Blue jumper - Kennedy, Kellett, Romero, West, MacPherson plus another Cordy, Wallis and Liberatore? I hope football never completely extinguishes this rule because it is another unique aspect of our game - and something the rule makers need to remember is it is our game. DAVID Parkin is a great of the game as a player, a coach and a fan and he will be speaking at the Werribee pre-match dinner this Saturday night. Footy fans would be mad to miss hearing his thoughts on the game. Ring the club on 9741 6688.

By ADEM SARICAOGLU WERRIBEE City’s strong start as a top flight Victorian soccer club continued on Saturday night with an impressive 4-3 road win against fellow National Premier Leagues newcomers, the Goulburn Valley Suns. The Suns were winless coming into the round five clash but the 2-2 Bees still had a formidable task on their hands, making the two-and-a-halfhour trip up the highway for the Easter Saturday fixture. In a match that ultimately saw seven goals make their way through to the back of the net, City’s Anthony Ragusa opened the account with a strike 14 minutes into the contest. Then, an own-goal that last came off City’s Steven Cudrig levelled the ledger at 1-1 seven minutes later. Despite that setback, the Bees ran riot for the remainder of the opening half and added three more goals to their tally through Zois Galanopoulos, Ryan Filipovic and Oliver Rowland. Coming into the second half 4-1 up, Werribee City slowed down to allow the Suns back into the contest. A goal in the 52nd minute to Craig Carley pegged it back to 4-2 before former Melbourne Victory man Kristian Sarkies converted a 76thminute penalty to set up a thrilling finish at McEwan Reserve in Shepparton. However, the Bees were able to hold on for their third win from five starts, catapulting them into the top six ahead of this Saturday’s away clash with Northcote City. Coach Nino Ragusa was pleased that his side got the three points it came for, but remained disappointed with the second half fadeout. “The result is excellent, that’s exactly what we

Milan Savic was in action for Werribee City on Saturday night. 106166 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOTT went up there for and we prepared for it very well but the actual performance was a bit Jekyll and Hyde, so to speak,” he said. “We had a good first half and then in the second half, we pretty much went to sleep but credit to them, they really came after us. “They didn’t throw the towel in and they really came at us.” Ragusa down-played his side’s promising start to the year, reminding his boys much remains to be learned as the season wears on.

“To be honest I wouldn’t say they’ve completely adapted to the top league,” Ragusa said. “I think they’ve still got to learn a lot of things. For example (Saturday) night 4-1 up at half-time, they should be really able to one, control the game and two, actually bury them even further because defensively (Goulburn Valley) are quite poor. “But to be with three wins, I’m ecstatic and I think honestly we’re travelling a little bit beyond ourselves at the moment.”

VOLKSWAGEN Australia’s triumvirate of hot Golfs is complete this week, with the special GTI Performance and Golf R joining the GTI that arrived late last year. Revealed in August last year, the new Golf R hits Australia this month with a $51,990 starting price - $7500 more than the manual GTI and $3500 beyond the auto-only GTI Performance. As with its siblings, the new Golf R brings more power, more features and a little extra cachet. The new Golf R is again driven by a 2.0 litre turbocharged unit which is shared with its upmarket Audi S3 cousin. As before, the European model offers more power 221kW, this time - but in Australia, the S3 and this new Golf R both offer 206kW. Torque is also up, now rated at 380Nm. By comparison, the outgoing Golf R offers 188kW and 330Nm, while the new GTI offers 162kW and 350Nm. Mated again to an all-wheeldrive system, the powered-up turbo engine can be had with six-speed manual or automatic DSG transmissions. In manual form, the R claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds, and the DSG is quicker still at 5.0 seconds. That again compares favourably to the outgoing model,
