Bill Rogers

BILL Rogers never saw the grenade in February 1971. It rolled underneath his good mate Eric Halkyard, a machine gunner, who lay next to Bill in the high hills of Phuoc Tuy province in South Vietnam and tore his friend apart. Bill, now 68 years old and a Berwick native, was medevaced out of the Vietnam War with severed nerves in his arm and shrapnel in his back, but he was the lucky one - Eric left behind a wife and two children. “I can see his face, like I’m looking at you. It just sort of sticks with you,” Bill said of his friend. “He was a good mate; it was a comradeship that you knew what each other was doing. “You didn’t have to say, you knew exactly what was happening, everything gelled. “When he died we both came back in the chopper, he in a body bag and I was lying next to him and I thought ‘this isn’t the way it’s supposed to end’.” Bill has been an active member of Legacy since the mid- ‘90s, helping to support the widows and children of servicemen killed or wounded in action. But Bill said in the 40 years since his death, he has never been able to find Eric’s family. “I’d thought about him a lot, one of the things they didn’t know a lot about was, although he was separated, he had a wife and two children in England,” he said. “I often think about him and I think about the kids and just how they’re doing.” Bill, a former president of Melbourne Legacy, served in the Vietnam War with the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment in 1970 and 1971 before he was flown back to Australia after being wounded just a month before the end of his tour. Tomorrow (Friday) Bill will be in Perth watching his 39-year-old son Scott, himself a veteran of Iraq and East Timor and the president of his local RSL, as he leads the Anzac parade.
“Anzac Day to me is a very important day because that’s the day that you not only remember the mates that you’ve lost, but it’s the mates of all conflicts,” Bill said. “It was a different year, a different type of conflict but you all served and you were all part of this family which is, to us, very important.” Bill is now the welfare officer for the southeastern Legacy group, which covers the Berwick, Cranbourne and Dandenong areas. Established in 1923 by ex-servicemen, Legacy is a voluntary organisation which currently assists 100,000 widows and their families throughout Australia, across 49 different clubs, including one in London. “To me, it’s a great privilege to look after these ladies. “The things you do for them and they’re so appreciative, they’re appreciative of you just going around having a chat to them,” Bill said. “And they say ‘would you like a cup of tea?’ and you discover they have it all laid out ready for you, they just love it.” For more on the lead-up to Anzac Day, turn to pages pages 7, 12 and 42.

Driver dies in hospital after crash with truck
Charity Wells up for the homeless
AN ELDERLY man has died in hospital after his car was hit by a truck in Cranbourne earlier month. Police believe the 81-year-old man turned right into Thompsons Road when his car collided with a truck travelling west about 11.45am on Saturday 12 April. The Wantirna man was taken to The Alfred hospital with critical injuries and died on Monday 21 April. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
By BRIDGET COOK WHO cares for the plight of homeless and underprivileged people in the Casey community? Well there’s no denying that Berwick couple Malcolm and Jenny Wells do. That is why they have established a not-for-profit organisation aimed at lending a helping hand to those most in need in the local area. As part of ‘Who Cares? We Do’, the couple will run days across Casey where those less fortunate can come in and get free clothes, toys, a haircut, medical check, simple meal and connect with advice and support services in the area. Mr Wells said planning for the first event, to be held in Cranbourne on Sunday 22 June, was well underway, with donations already flooding in. Mr Wells, who owns Hyde Cooper Wells Accountants in Cranbourne, said they decided to start up the initiative to give back to the community where they live and work. “Who Cares? We Do is based on a format used by an organisation in Sydney called Rough Threads,” he said. “They go into communities in Sydney four times year where the homeless and less fortunate can access clothes, haircuts and a meal for the day. “We were fortunate enough to be involved when they ran a day in Manly and got to see how it all works. “Jenny and I were looking for a long time for something we could do for our local community and this type of day ticked all the boxes in

Berwick couple Malcolm and Jenny Wells have started an organisation called ‘Who Cares? We Do’, where they will hold a day in Cranbourne to help those in need. Picture: ROB CAREW terms of directly helping those in the community that need it most.” Mr Wells said he believed businesses should give back to the local community in any way they could, and this was their way of doing so. “Dare I say it, but at some stage in the next five to 10 years, I want to retire from my business and I wanted something of a charitable nature that could take over the time and effort my business now occupies,” he said. “For us, it’s all about giving back and doing what we can for those in need.” Mr Wells said even though it
was early days, they had already received great support for the day in all aspects. “We have a spare bedroom at home that is completely full of clothes at the moment,” he said. “We have a nurse who is going to volunteer her time to do free basic medical checks on the day and then we can provide people with a list of bulk-billing doctors in the area if they need to see one. “Four hairdressers, including one coming from Sale, have offered to help out with the free haircuts. “At this point, we also have about 80 volunteers prepared to help out
on the day with the meals and anything else. “The generosity of people is overwhelming.” Mr Wells said they were still taking donations, and particularly needed men’s clothes and blankets to hand out. The first day will be held on Sunday 22 June at a Cranbourne location, which is still to be confirmed. Anyone wanting to find out more, including the confirmed location, or wanting to get involved can follow ‘Who Cares? We Do’ on Facebook or call Malcolm Wells on 0412 998 964.
Unlocked cars are an invitation to theft By BRIDGET COOK POLICE have again urged people to lock their cars to stop opportunistic thieves from stealing their valuables, which continues to be a huge problem in Casey. This week police have released videos and images of thieves looking for unlocked cars to highlight how easy it is for them to do so. In 2013, there were 1698 reports of thefts from cars in Casey - up 6.2 per cent from the previous year. Casey CIU Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Rowlands said people were not getting the message about locking their cars outside their homes, and it was causing a lot frustration for police.
“We are seeing it again and again - items being stolen from unlocked cars,” he said. “It’s a real thorn in our side.” Sergeant Andrew Payne from Casey’s Tactical Anti-Crime Team said in most cases thieves were simply trying door handles to see if cars are unlocked, rather than smashing car windows. “Basically, what we’ve been experiencing, particularly on weekends, is large groups of youths wondering streets, going into an area and trying 30 to 40 door handles of cars,” he said. “Out of that, they might find 10 unlocked where they search consoles and can easily take valuables
and wallets in a matter of 20 to 30 seconds. “There is then a flow on effect where they use the tap-and-go stolen credit cards as much as they can before the owner even realises it’s stolen. “They are not going out and smashing windows, it’s much simpler for them than that.” Sgt Payne said it was extremely frustrating for police to continually find out that people’s cars were being left unlocked. “The days where you can safely leave your car unlocked are long gone,” he said. Sgt Payne said some people did not realise they weren’t activating

their car’s remote central locking and he urged people to take more care. “Ensure your car is locked before you leave it,” he said. “There’s nothing more frustrating than having to cancel cards, dealing with banks and having to get a new licence and other cards. “We have a huge problem with this in Casey so I urge everyone to ensure their car is locked so we can try and curb the problem.” Visit the Berwick and Cranbourne News pages at starcommunity.com.au from tomorrow (Thursday) to see the footage of youths trying car door handles in Casey streets.

TWO teenagers had a meat cleaver pulled on them during an armed robbery in Cranbourne last week. Two Cranbourne boys, aged 16 and 17 years old, were sitting in the rotunda in Greg Clydesdale Square outside Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre when a man approached them. He produced a large meat cleaver and made demands to the boys to hand over their money and mobile phones. The man placed the meat cleaver against one the teen’s stomachs and continued to make demands. He then made off with their mobile phone, some money and one of the victim’s Southern Star mountain bike. The offender was described as Caucasian with tanned skin, average build and was wearing a black hooded jumper, black cap and blue and white Nike runners. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Food glorious food and fun By BRIDGET COOK COMMUNITY groups and residents served up their best creations from the kitchen for the annual Community Kitchen Rulz event this month. The Hampton Park Networking Group (HPNG), in partnership with the Hampton Park Community Garden, hosted the event on Saturday 12 April, which had all the right ingredients for a fun day out. The event included market stalls, homemade baked goodies, food tasting, traditional
Devonshire tea and cooking competitions. The bake-off was one of the main features of the day where entries from members of the community were judged and prizes handed out at the end. Maz Chong won the savour category, Hailey Watson took out the sweet competition and Fatina Omerovic was the winner of the cake section. Elena Kaye Aquirre was named the winner of the Under 12 category. Another highlight of the day was the live cook-off between
the HPNG, Lynbrook Residents Association (LRA) and Spirit of Cranbourne group, judged by Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley and Casey councillor Damien Rosario. The LRA was named champions on the day, with HPNG coming in second and Spirit of Cranbourne in third. HPNG president Vanassa Gerdes said the event was a great success. She said fresh produce grown in the community garden was sold on the day and was a great hit.

FLINDERS MP Greg Hunt is under scrutiny for handballing the decision-making responsibility on the fate of a dedicated wildlife corridor in Casey aimed at protecting the endangered southern brown bandicoot. Mr Hunt, who is also the Federal Environment Minister, handed over his decision-making powers on the future of two Victorian wildlife corridors, citing his position as the sitting Member for Flinders as a ’conflict of interest’. The Casey corridor, set out in the State Government’s strategy to protect the southern brown bandicoot in 2011, aimed to connect the species habitat in the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens with other habitats in Kooweerup. Without corridors, there are fears that connectivity between crucial bandicoot populations will be severed by a barrier of urban sprawl - putting the species at serious risk. Last month, the State Government revealed plans to drop two wildlife corridors including the Cranbourne one, to make way for the urban sprawl. Last week, a petition with more than 1500 signatures was presented to Mr Hunt calling on him to reject the Victorian Government plan to remove the habitat corridors for urban development. Victorian National Parks Association habitat campaigner Yasmin Kelsall urged Mr Hunt to stand strong on this issue. “The electorate of Flinders

In relation to Mosque Traffic Near-Misses (News, 17 April): THE main concern I have with this issue is why does this petition only focus on the people who attend a mosque when the people who attend the church next door create similar issues for residents? I have never set foot inside the mosque in question (or any other mosque, actually) and in all honesty I have not witnessed the concerns in question but I have seen the traffic and parking on a Sunday during the weekly church service and really must wonder why this does not cause Daniel (not his real name) any concerns? Why is councillor Rafal Kaplon (hopefully his real name) concerned about the precedent this will set? Maybe people who attend the mosque will set the precedent for the people attending the church next door to park anywhere along the road as there is not enough parking space? Hmmmmm, hang on, that may already be happening. If he is so concerned about this issue, why has he not worked with the community to find other traffic management solutions (being totally honest, he may be but this is not obvious in the article). I am aware of traffic management strategies that have been put in place by IEWAD, some of these have been stopped by the City of Casey for what appears to be trivial reasons. What is missing from Lachlan’s (more than likely his real name) article is what changes both Daniel (not his real name) and councillor Rafal Kaplon (hopefully his real name) would like to see made. Maybe the mosque should be closed so that the church has more parking space? Except that is not a fair or reasonable suggestion. Neither is it fair or reasonable for one religious community to be singled out when there is an issue that involves two. Now I would never suggest that Daniel (not his real name) would be objecting on religious or racial grounds - I don’t know him and would need more information before I could make any such suggestion. However, to petition council about the behavior of one section of our community and ignore the same behavior from a different group really causes one to question the motivation behind the petition. Finally, yes the traffic is a concern but really why limit this concern to one religious organisation’s patrons driving abilities? Craig Nicholls, via web.

In relation to Libs Choose Serey (News 17 April): HERE we go again, the third Liberal Casey councillor trying their hand at state government. Cr Serey has been in her job as a councillor for a year and a half just like Cr Crestani who was elected for a couple of months and then put her hand up to run for the federal senate seat at the last election. As I stated time and time again, council should not be a breeding ground for wannabe state and federal MPs, council should be for hard-working mum and dad ratepayers who care about their community. LEST We Forget - as three stand alone words they achieve nothing startling, but when they become one, as a post-script to The Ode on Anzac Day, they become powerful, remembering those who have fought, and those who have died fighting for our freedom. Achieving nothing as individuals but becoming powerful as one ... gee that sounds familiar. There’s a common thread between football and war - importance not being one of themand when the Tooradin and Cranbourne Football clubs run out at Westernport Oval on Friday, Anzac Day, the threads they wear will carry with them the legacy of the past. Adorning the specially prepared guernseys of both clubs are the names of the fallen soldiers from their local communities.“All those names are actual people, they’re not just a vague legend, and they’re people who came from this part of the world,” Dandenong/Cranbourne RSL president John Wells OAM said. “As far as we know, this has never been done anywhere before in this country, so we’re thrilled and honoured to be a part of it. This is not just a footy match now, these are the names of real people from this area which takes things a step further and it’s a pretty important step,” he said. Tooradin committeeman and chief organiser for the day, Barry Purcell, said the day provided an opportunity for both clubs to make a real difference to their local communities. “We all have a huge opportunity, in this region, to put the Anzac Day values on the map,” Purcell said. “The commitment is to make this ongoing, far beyond this one day and take the spirit of the Anzacs along for the ride.” Purcell’s brother-in-law, and president of the Cranbourne Football Club, Shane Baker, said his club was thrilled to be involved in the day. “When a club comes to you and asks if you

Player’s mark on depression diculously” well-paid and high-profile footballer who didn’t have to have a “normal job” who had “every reason to be happy”. “It’s very sad to me in a way (that Clark retired) because he had a very bright future (but) I respect the courage behind the decision he made.” AFL clubs needed to boost resources for emotional well-being - matching their cutting-edge injury rehabilitation programs, he said. He asked how an unnamed $24 million club could hire a psychiatrist for just three days a week. “I’ll continue to lobby my (football) code to see that the most important thing in our code is our people.” The former North Melbourne and Sydney Swans player raised sobs from

WAYNE Schwass, in keeping with his reputation as a lauded AFL premiership player laid down a challenge straight down-the-line recently. At a mental health exposition for Greater Dandenong, Casey, Cardinia Mental Health Network on 9 April he challenged governments to “pick up and run with” a campaign to cut a national toll of 2500 people who committed suicide last year. He said it was right for governments to invest heavily in reducing the state’s road toll which stood at 242 last year. Schwass then asked where was the investment - the equivalent of TAC’s hard-hitting road safety campaigns - to reduce the thousands of people
who took their own lives. “We need open, robust and transparent conversations. Why? Because 2500 people left the earth this year.” Schwass is one of the few AFL footballers who have spoken openly about their own battle with clinical depression. He drew on the plight of 26-yearold Melbourne footballer Mitch Clark who retired from the game due to clinical depression the day before the exposition. He knows there would be many more footballers in a similar struggle. Speaking at the Springvale forum, Schwass said it showed mental illness could “land on the doorstep” of anybody regardless of their profession. It could even strike down a “ri-
an otherwise hushed audience as he recounted his life as a footballer who suffered silently with his illness for 10 years. He said one of the main questions he faced after going public in 2006 was “what were you depressed about?” He has had to explain he has the same concerns and stresses as everyone else. Married with three children, he had financial stress - it was the same for everyone, rich or poor. As a 17 to 18-year-old footballer and life-long perfectionist, he tried to put aside the “sense of overwhelming sadness” and get on with his career. Around 1995-96, he had a glittering on-field era, which included a premiership, vice-captaincy and two best-andfairests.

It coincided with his lowest emotional ebb. After training one night, he started crying as he stopped at traffic lights. The tears flowed for half an hour. When first diagnosed, he thought depression was for “weak people”. He was worried what family, friends and team-mates would think. “That’s such an ignorant position to take,” he said. “I was extremely fit and finely tuned to play AFL, but not equipped to deal with ... this thing called depression. “While I grew up, I only saw my dad cry once. I never acknowledged I loved my dad.” “It’s incredible how much help is out there when you put your hand up.” Contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

BUSINESS SOUTH-EAST
Industry leaders try to join in By CASEY NEILL AN INDUSTRY forum has heard that marketing innovative products, trade agreements and collaboration are three key issues facing manufacturers. Chisholm’s Automotive and Logistics Training Centre in Dandenong hosted more than 200 industry guests from the manufacturing sector on 7 April. Financial journalist James Kirby hosted a discussion on the state of Australia’s manufacturing industry with Manufacturing Minister David Hodgett, Jayco’s Gerry Ryan, Diver Consolidated Industries’ Jim Griffin and South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) executive officer Adrian Boden. Opening the event, Chisholm CEO Maria Peters said the institute would establish an ongoing conversation for manufacturing industry members through a series of seminars. Mr Griffin said manufacturers in Australia received support for research and development, but were often at a loss when the time came to commercialise the product they’d created. “That’s where a lot of companies fail,” he said. “A lot of good ideas get left on the vine.” Mr Griffin also highlighted “massively unfair trade agreements” with South Korea, Thailand, the US, Japan and Malaysia as a disadvantage for Australian exporters. He said there was “no control” over

what products came into Australia, yet there were tough restrictions on Australian products entering overseas markets. Mr Ryan said Australian businesses had to “jump through hoops” to export to Europe, but companies sending products into Australia didn’t comply with standards here. “All we ask for is a level playing
field,” he said. Mr Ryan was non-committal when asked if he could have established and built his business in today’s climate. “There are opportunities out there. They are different today,” he said. “It comes down to each individual and his passion. “Australia has got the capabilities.
We’ve just got to believe in ourselves.” Mr Boden said Australian manufacturers were nimble because the vast majority were small, but that this reduced their ability to compete overseas. “It’s very expensive to export. It’s very expensive to get yourself into a position to export,” he said. He highlighted a “great lack of
collaboration within our own environment” - which would strengthen exporting power - pointing to one local company that made guitars but bought cases from the UK. “It comes back to complacency,” he said. Chisholm will soon announce dates for further industry leader forums over the coming 12 months.
Laps by leaps and bounds By LACHLAN MOORHEAD
Jodie Tosone and her son Cerano are looking forward to participating in Paul Sadler Swimland’s 10 millionth swim competition.
WHEN the business opened in 1972, those involved with Paul Sadler Swimland never imagined the franchise would celebrate its 10 millionth swim. But this year it is doing exactly that, an unprecedented milestone for the 14-site franchise which includes its Narre Warren school in Seebeck Drive. To recognise the milestone, Paul Sadler Swimland will be organising a major prize draw that will see one lucky family walk away with $10,000. In addition, every swim school will also surprise one
lucky family with a year of free swimming lessons that can be enjoyed by each child in the family. Fourteen families will take part in the major prize draw, with one member from each family given the chance to collect a key that unlocks the treasure chest to the cash prize. Company founder Paul Sadler said he never imagined his swim school would grow into the successful national franchise it has become, which now sees almost 30,000 swimmers participate in lessons each week. “Although the years seem to have flown by quickly, I can
pin-point every hurdle and every achievement we’ve had to date,” he said. “I’m so proud of my team and how far we’ve come since the opening of the first Paul Sadler Swim School in 1972 and I’m excited to celebrate this milestone with them and every Swimland family. “Paul Sadler Swimland is one of Australia’s most successful and fastest growing swim schools and we are passionate about teaching Australian children the vital life skill of swimming.” For more information, visit www.paulsadlerswimland.com. au.
Telstra lends sporting hand By LACHLAN MOORHEAD TELSTRA has helped ensure a Berwick sports club will have access to first aid training after it gave the group a specialised grant last month. The company has supplied the Berwick Springs Netball Club with a $1200 Kids Fund grant which will allow the club to offer important first aid training and supplies to its members. The netball club is one of 625 community notfor-profit organisations across Australia to benefit from Telstra Foundation’s commitment to supporting local communities, with $750,000 worth of Telstra Kids Fund grants available in 2014.
Telstra area general manager for Melbourne South East, Vicky Allen, said the grant would have a positive impact on the members at the netball club. “We are proud to be able to help local groups such as Berwick Springs Netball Club, support the skills, talents and development of children,” she said. “We fund these projects because they add value to the lives of the children who participate, their families and the wider community.” Grant recipients are nominated by Telstra employees whose children in their immediate family are actively involved in community organisations.
Telstra Foundation chair Geoff Booth said the recent grant would help players from Berwick Springs Netball Club make important connections not just with the company, but within their own community. “We’ve demonstrated this commitment over the past 12 years, giving Telstra’s Kids Fund grants to thousands of groups across Australia including schools, art and culture groups, sport and recreational clubs, disability services and environmental organisations,” he said. “This is a fantastic initiative to make a positive and lasting difference to the lives of children in the communities where Telstra staff live and work.”
Successful businessman Mark Bouris will be the guest speaker at a dinner next month presented by the Rotary Club of Pakenham.

Symphony’s silk is set to rise for Dawn Service By BRIDGET COOK ADRIAN Harper-Gomm will stand proud at the Narre Warren Dawn Service on Friday as he reads out his tribute to the brave soldiers who fought for Australia. A testament that the Anzac spirit and the sacrifice the diggers made
has not been forgotten among young people, the Cranbourne North teenager wrote a poem last year in their honour. Adrian, 17, has now been invited to read out his poem - Silk Rain Symphony - at the Dawn Service at the Casey Civic Centre on Friday. It all came about after Adrian entered the poem into the council’s Fresh
Words writing competition last year in which he was named a finalist in the poetry and lyrics category. Adrian said the poem was his way of honouring all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. “Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand,
therefore the Anzac legend is an inspiration not only to myself but to today’s society,” he said. “I imagined what it would be like for the soldiers during the First World War. “I thought about how they may not have wanted to fight; they were soldiers but they were also human and
this is where I drew my inspiration from. “I feel extremely honoured to have been given the wonderful opportunity to read out my poem at the Anzac Day Dawn Service in front of veterans and members of the Casey community, as well as in memory of those that have fallen.”

Death upon the hill; There is no movement, the soldiers dead and still, Limp in the dirt and detriment of the war, The survivors left to wonder, if there is anything worth fighting for, But they are ordered to continue, to fight for the greater cause, So with their heads bowed, they trudge on taking a moment’s pause, Then they never look back and soon the dead are forgotten in the depths of time, Their spirits are lifted with a song and chime, And they march onto the enemy, to the great rolling skies, That squirms with the souls, with the innocent cries, Their boots ploughing through the dust and bane, Their bodies numb from the cold and the pain, One drops to his knees, begging “water please”? But there is none; as the bullets start flying and soldiers begin to freeze, The soldier’s exhaustion meets their faces; they do not want to fight,
They are human, they are individual but they are alike, They do not want the pain, or the sadness or death, So they pray to God with one last breath, And in return, like a miracle saviour, The heaven’s open up and grant them their favour, The drops fall in curtains and wrap around their faces, And as they hit, the soldiers pause, stuck in their places, Then a moment later, the music falls upon their ears, Each song unique, vanquishing their fears, Inside their heads, they laugh and cheer and scream, As the music fills their hearts and the silky rain washes them clean, Then the rain ceases and they celebrate not in vain, For there are no more bullets, no enemies nor pain, The battlefield is empty but every soldier could see, The burdened souls in the sky, singing their silk rain symphony.
Willing to serve By BRIDGET COOK WHEN John Richardson joined the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), he wanted to serve his country where it was, on the frontline or in post-war operations.

And that’s exactly what he did for 12 years with the RNZN and something he continues to do to this day. These days however his focus has shifted to looking after the welfare of other returned servicemen and women like himself. Mr Richardson, from Cranbourne, was only 15-and-a-half years old when he enlisted with the RNZN after jumping through a few hoops, given he just shy of the 16-year-old age requirement at the time. “I was in the cadets when I was young so it was always something I was interested in,” he said. “My father wanted me to follow in his footsteps and become a surveyor. “However I said no and told them I was going to join the navy. “They were very reluctant but they let me. “In saying that, they were the first people in the wharf when we would return from an operation.” Mr Richardson joined the RNZN in 1955, at the end of the Korean War. For the next 12 years he was assigned to a number of operations. “I was first put on the HMNZS Royalist, which was a cruiser, where we conducted patrols in the post-war period,” he said. “We went up to the far east, to the port of Pusan in South Korea. “We spend 18 months in the area helping with the mopping up efforts after the war. “We also did a number of

Picture: DONNA OATES goodwill visits to places including Saigon, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila and Japan. “I was a stoker on the ships, which is like a mechanical engineer these days.” After finishing up on the Royalist, Mr Richardson was then deployed on the frigate Pukaki which was sent to the Antarctic. It was their responsibly to provide up-to-date weather reports and an air-sea rescue service of Operation Deep Freeze aircraft. Mr Richardson said most of his time was on ships and it was something he really enjoyed. “That time of my life was great and I enjoyed being involved. I’d do it again if I had to,” he said. Since finishing his time with the RNZN, Mr Richardson has
turned his focus to helping returned soldiers. After moving to Australia from New Zealand, Mr Richardson got involved in the Cranbourne RSL more than 10 years ago when he moved to Cranbourne. There he has served on the committee and as the welfare officer, something he has had cut back only recently due to illness. “As a welfare officer, I did hospital visits, home visits, attended funerals and duties like that for returned soldiers,” he said. “A role like this is vital in RSLs so veterans know they are not alone. “That’s why I encourage younger soldiers to get involved in RSLs. “They are there for your enjoyment, welfare and benefit. “We can help you with assistance you might need. “It’s about letting them know they are supported and help is always available.” Mr Richardson was also instrumental in the creation of the restored Macchi MB326H jet trainer aircraft that now flies high at the Cranbourne RSL, which honours Defence Force personnel who were killed in training. On Anzac Day, Mr Richardson said he will be at the Cranbourne Dawn Service and march to remember all those who had served their country. “It’s a very important day in our national history,” he said. “For us it’s about meeting our old mates, talking about the old days, remember those lost and showing a uniting front. “It’s great to see more and more people turning out to services, particularly children. “It’s something that should never be forgotten.”

PARK CENTRAL
HIGH TIME FOR VALUE FROM PAGE 1. WITH the south-east continuing to welcome new residents, Officer’s Park Central Estate is standing out as a high value estate for homebuyers. Released only in February this year, the stage three Liberty Park release has nearly sold out. With the estate now having exceeded its milestone 100th sale, National Pacific Properties general manager Steve Copland says there
is no sign of demand slowing down. “Park Central is drawing in a really diverse range of homebuyers, from young couples to large families and even retirees looking for a relaxed lifestyle they’re all seeing the value in this boutique estate,” Steve said. “We’re offering a beautifully designed neighbourhood that not only includes landscaped parkland with play equipment to entertain
kids of all age groups, but it’s also in walking distance from primary schools and a short car ride from all the amenities of the developing Officer town centre. “Park Central is connected to the established Beaconsfield community which borders the estate but is now becoming known as a community in its own right.” Following on from the huge interest of the Liberty Park release, Park Central is set to launch its
10 Ferres Road, Emerald Throw Away The Car Keys! Low maintenance gardens and being so close to town is the go with this one. Offering 3 spacious bedrooms plus a large living and dining room. The timber deck extends all along the side and around to the rear of the home, ensuring plenty of spots to sit and relax. Extensive landscaping and use of steps and retaining walls has resulted in a garden that's full of potential, whilst the deciduous trees offer shade and filtered sunlight in summer and loads of natural light in winter.

latest land stage - the stage four Hudson release. “The Hudson release is focused on bringing more choice to homebuyers,” Steve said. “Homebuyers can choose from seven metre wide lots which are 224 square metres in size and perfect for townhouses or those looking to downsize, right up to 18 metre wide lots which are 898 square metres in area - perfect for growing families.
“This release also offers a limited number of deeper lots, extending in length between 36 metres and 42 metres, to provide expansive backyard space and ample opportunity for outdoor entertaining - a unique selling point that underscores the relaxed lifestyle Park Central has to offer.” To secure a dream lot in Park Central, visit www. parkcentralestate.com.au or phone Greg Rankin on 0487 888 038.

LOCATED in the Officer Structure Plan and zoned low density residential here is an opportunity to create a wonderful small lifestyle subdivision. An existing comfortable four-bedroom home with good improvements is located on site and currently tenanted. Your opportunity is to reside on site while developing or develop the site and sell off the home on one of the new parcels of land. Recent preliminary discussions with The Cardinia Shire reveal the possibility of creating 7 lots (subject to council approval). From a timing perspective, development of the immediate surrounds is now well under way with a number of subdivisions selling land and new homes being constructed. The Officer corridor is set to undergo a major transformation in the short term. The home at 240 Rix Road is well located opposite a large tract of future parkland and minutes from the Beaconsfield town centre with supermarkets, restaurants and both

BOTANIC RIDGE PROPERTY THRIVING RESIDENTS in the leafy suburb of Botanic Ridge are again celebrating the news that the suburb has outstripped many of their southeastern suburb counterparts as an investment property hot-spot with median house prices increasing by a whopping 15.4 per cent in the past 12 months. After the recent release of RP data, Botanic Ridge ranked highest in the City of Casey for property price growth, outperforming suburbs such as Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne, Lynbrook, Endeavour Hills and even a number of Melbourne’s leafy inner suburbs. Recognised last year as one of Australian Property Investment Magazine’s top 10 suburbs to invest in, Botanic Ridge has grown exponentially since its gazettal as a new suburb in 2009, as astute buyers scramble to snap up blocks at a rapid rate within one of the few leafy pockets left in Melbourne’s south-eastern corridor. With Botanic Ridge Estate’s median house prices jumping from 15.4 per cent in the past 12 months alone, the estate’s development manager Joe Cassera said he wasn’t surprised to hear that Botanic Ridge was outperforming many of the neighbouring regions to offer a sound investment both now and into the future. “Once again, this is great news for existing Botanic Ridge home owners and it also assures future buyers that an investment in this new suburb will grow in years to come. “Our house and land packages start at just $429,000 which is $67,000 below the Botanic Ridge median price. “It is little wonder that savvy buyers are snapping up their dream home site in the estate - it’s really a no brainer!” said Mr Cassera. “Botanic Ridge is uniquely positioned on the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula and is also one of the few remaining suburbs in Melbourne where a

BOTANIC RIDGE
semi-rural lifestyle reigns supreme. “At Botanic Ridge Estate we currently offer larger lots at affordable prices in a premium estate all within easy walking distance of our beautiful parks, gardens, schools and open space as well as the nearby local primary school. “Characterised by beautifully undulating land and sweeping views over the surrounding tree-tops, it’s no wonder our residents love the lifestyle on offer.
“As Botanic Ridge is further developed in line with the new Precinct Structure Plan over the coming years, a host of new facilities including retail, health, sport and schooling opportunities will all be delivered to the suburb so our residents will be able to enjoy every convenience right at their doorstep. “We are thrilled to see the latest RP Data report placing Botanic Ridge high on the list of rising suburbs as it just reaffirms what we’ve been thinking for many years - that
residents who choose to live here have made an excellent investment that will stand the test of time,” he said. Botanic Ridge Estate currently offers a range of quality land allotments ranging from 510 square metres to 817 square metres and starting from $219,000. CARLISLE HOMES
A NEW RANGE OF LUXURY LIVING CARLISLE Homes is delighted to announce the launch of four new display homes including three new designs within its luxury Affinity collection at Somerfield Estate, Keysborough. The stunning and much anticipated Sanctuary 48, Canterbury 44, Vaucluse 45 and Indiana 33 display homes opened on Saturday 19 April. Steeped in sophistication, these are four amazing new spaces. The palatial double-storey Sanctuary 48 includes a light filled entrance and master bedroom downstairs. The Sanctuary 48 is the perfect home for couples that wish to live in a separate quarter and have their children enjoy the second floor all to themselves. Features include a grand entrance foyer featuring double doors, high open ceiling and drop lighting. There is a large formal lounge area located separately to the rear living zone and a staircase located in the heart of the home is saturated in natural light. The formal master suite is located on the ground floor and is secluded from street noise. It has a formal entrance, walk-in wardrobe and ensuite complete with a separate WC, large shower and his and hers vanity. The modern kitchen design with an island bench has natural light and a walk-in pantry. A spacious laundry is complete with a walk-in linen area. Next door features the Canterbury 44, a perfect home for family living with four living areas and a grand master suite. There is a large foyer, featuring double doors, with sidelights and feature hob detailing. The formal lounge and study is located away from the casual living zone as is the home theatre room. There is a generous private outdoor living area to the rear of the home. Modern kitchen design provides an island bench with natural lighting and walk-in pantry.

A master suite includes two walk-in wardrobes and a full ensuite complete with a separate WC, large shower and his and hers vanity with the sleeping zone located away from the activity area. The Vaucluse 45 is designed for a 14 metre block and has a spacious entertainment area. The open-plan living at the rear of the home provides entertaining flexibility while upstairs the huge master suite creates a wonderful feeling of luxury. Owners can enjoy the large foyer with double entry doors with hob detailing, the spacious rumpus room located off the private outdoor living area, the kitchen, meals and living rooms flowing through to a covered alfresco and outdoor living area. The privately located powder room downstairs has full vanity, basin and mirror. There is also the very popular Indiana 33 which showcases the best of open-plan living. From the moment visitors step in to the lavish entry foyer they are greeted with a sense of peace through intelligent design optimising light and space. Open-plan living at its finest, this premium home is ideal for a modern lifestyle. After the big day of family fun last Saturday, the celebratory fun continues with a formal unveiling at a twilight event on Wednesday 30 April from 6.30pm to showcase the new home designs with live music, finger food and refreshments. Somerfield Estate sales consultant Nathan Taylor will be on hand to walk visitors through the luxury display homes. Somerfield Estate is a prestigious new neighbourhood which is wonderfully positioned in Keysborough in Melbourne’s south-east. Somerfield Estate has easy access to quality primary and secondary schools, child and health care services and sports facilities. In battle’s historic footsteps By LACHLAN MOORHEAD SOME grandchildren can only dream of walking in the footsteps of their great-grandfather, who served in both world wars, but as Anzac Day approached, 15-year-old Travis Reid did just that. In February the Narre Warren teenager was one of several students who were awarded the coveted 2013-14 Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize by Denis Napthine. These school holidays he travelled overseas for a study tour of historic World War I battle sites in Greece, Turkey, Belgium and France. But he said the highlight was visiting Gallipoli. “I had the privilege of walking along Anzac Cove where they landed on 25 April 1915, where I saw firsthand the hardship they would have had to endure in trying to surpass the enemy’s defences,” he said. “I also walked along the Nek, Shrapnel Valley, Razorback and many other ridges in the area. “We also visited many cemeteries in Gallipoli such as Ari Burnu, Lone Pine, Quinn’s Post, Shell Green and Beach Cemetery.” Travis’s great-grandfather, Archibald Reid, fought in World War I as part of the 3rd Divisional Signals Company. For his service in World War I and World War II, Archibald received several accolades including the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, the War
Medal and the Australia Service Medal. “He was in the Australian 3rd Division where he fought on the Western Front in France and Belgium and also fought in the major battles at Messines, Broodseinde Ridge, Passchendaele, Amiens and the St Quentin Canal,” Travis said. “I had the privilege of seeing the battlefields and terrain in which he and so many other soldiers fought in and it allowed to me to understand the true hardship and struggle that he would have gone through and much more during the Great War.” Travis applied for the Anzac Prize last year through his humanities class at Fountain Gate Secondary School in which the award had been set as a class project. Along with other classmates, Travis wrote an essay on what can be learned from the Anzac spirit. “I would like to thank my teacher Miss Irving from Fountain Gate Secondary College for encouraging and supporting my entry in the Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize Competition,” he said. “I had a trip of a lifetime and I recommend all year nine and 10 students to enter the 2015 competition particularly as it is the centenary anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. “I would also like to thank my great grandfather and the many soldiers that fought and/or died alongside him during the Great War, enabling all Australians to enjoy the privilege of freedom in a democratic society.”
Travis, who last week visited the Ypres Reservoir Cemetery in Belgium, at the grave of Corporal Fredrick Jones, who served in the same regiment as his great-uncle and his great-grandfather.

Incontinence help CASEY Medical Centre, 197 High Street, Cranbourne, is a large practice which offers comprehensive services and maintains a professional and friendly service. Practice manager Jenny Berkhout said the centre had state-of-the-art facilities and prided itself on giving the best possible service and experience to patients. She said they offered a wide range of services and had just added a new treatment for incontinence and pelvic floor rehabilitation. “Casey Medical Centre has offered this service since September last year, and we are having some amazing success for many male and female patients,” she said. “Many patients who have undergone the treatment have reported marked improvement in their incontinence and this can be life-changing. “The patient is assessed for suitability for this treatment by one of our GPs and receives a course of treatment which is painless, non-invasive and affordable for all. “Each treatment session involves 20 minutes of magnetic pelvic floor stimulation while the fully clothed patient remains comfortably seated on the Neotonus TM chair. A therapeutic pulsed magnetic field produces powerful stimulation to vital muscles that cannot be activated through pelvic floor exercises alone.” She said until recently this treatment was available through specialists such as urologists and gynaecologists. Its effectiveness for many people en-
Casey Medical Centre staff member Chloe with Tom. couraged Casey Medical Centre to acquire the equipment to offer this service to their patients. Many people suffer incontinence to some degree, and it is most common in women after childbirth and also older generations of women and men. Ms Berkhout said the centre constantly strove to offer the latest and best possible service and experience to their patients. The doctors and staff regularly undertake various courses and training for continuing professional development. “Our doctors are passionate about teaching medical and nursing students to ensure that future generations will continue to receive high quality medical care,” she said. The general practice offers total family care, immunisations, emergency facilities, minor surgery, women’s health, men’s health, paediatrics, counselling and mental health, obstetrics, gynaecology, diabetes education, antenatal care, childbirth education classes, incontinence treatment, beauty
therapy, IPL hair removal and anti-ageing treatment. There is a maternal child health nurse on site as well as nursing home visits are undertaken. There is an on-site pharmacy and diagnostic imaging, pathology and allied health in close proximity. Casey Medical Centre was established in December 1978 by Dr Sam Auteri and has progressed through various stages of expansion to become one of the largest and most respected health care providers in the South-East region. Ms Berkhout said the staff recognised the patient as being the most important person in the practice and all staff members worked in an ethical and responsible manner, in an environment of teamwork, with mutual respect for each other’s abilities and functions. Casey Medical Centre is open Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 5pm and from 9am to noon on public holidays (closed Christmas Day) for further information phone 5991 1222.
By LACHLAN MOORHEAD AND TANIA PHILLIPS A PRISON is the last place to expect a Buddhist chaplain but the world is full of surprises. Dharma teacher Andrew Williams can attest to this adage, having spent the last three years visiting Fulham Correctional Centre near Sale, teaching the prisoners about the ways of Buddhism. Andrew, who calls Endeavour Hills home when he isn’t globetrotting on his Buddhist missions, said he was motivated to “bring some joy through words and actions” to the prisoners at Fulham as part of the Buddhist Council of Victoria’s prison program. “It’s a minimum and medium security prison, so these people are fairly close to being released. It’s an added motivation, these people are about to be released into society and I want to help give them the tools to integrate,” the prolific musician said. “About a year ago, I recommended that the prisoners should get to know each other and do meditation together. “I didn’t even think about it until fairly recently and then I walked into the units and saw about 20 people sitting on the floor meditating.” It is this dedication to helping others and to Buddhism itself that will see Andrew travel to Vietnam next month to celebrate Vesak - the holy day observed traditionally by Buddhists around the world. “My month begins in Vietnam, the event runs from 7 to 11 May. I’m actually the delegate for the Buddhist Federation of Australia,” Andrew said. “I’ve got a friend of mine to translate three of my own songs
Andrew Williams, here at the Yun Yang Temple, is off to Vietnam in May to celebrate Vesak - the holy day observed by Buddhists. Picture: ROB CAREW into Vietnamese for the celebrations, so I’ll sing it in Vietnamese as well as English. “It’s (Vesak) a different way of celebrating, but it is pretty close to Christmas or Easter. It’s humongous; you have no idea the amount of people that attend.” A Vesak event will also be held in Melbourne on 24 May at Melbourne Town Hall where Andrew is organising a musical performance with local Buddhist temples Sakyamuni Sambuddha and Dhammarasana as well as others. Always drawn to Buddhism, Andrew became a teacher in 1998 while in the US after pursuing a career in acting. On returning to Australia to be closer to his family, he continues to
volunteer as a Dharma teacher and pursue his music interests. Andrew has since gone on to study teachings in all of the three major Buddhist traditions -- Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. He said he held Buddhist beliefs long before he discovered Buddhism, and took to the philosophy in his 20s. He is now a resident teacher at the Yung Yang Buddhist Temple in Narre Warren and Sakyamuni Sambuddha Temple in Berwick. He is also heavily involved with the Casey Multifaith Network and co-hosts a Voice of Faith radio program. West Gippsland Cricket Association
Ahead of the pack By RUSSELL BENNETT
Power and the passion By DAVID NAGEL IF the passion emanating from the Tooradin and Cranbourne Football Clubs, and the Dandenong/Cranbourne RSL is anything to go by, then this Friday’s Anzac Day clash between the Seagulls and Eagles is going to be something very special indeed. The brainchild of Tooradin committeeman Barry Purcell, the day will pay respects to local fallen soldiers, at the same time aiming to absorb the Anzac spirit into the future. The club will host an Anzac Day luncheon with a guest speaker from the Afghan war, preceding a fly-over of Harvard and Yak aircraft, before a moving service that will include footballers and netballers from both clubs. The specially designed football jumpers include the names of fallen soldiers from the region. “It sends a chill up my spine now just thinking about how good the last post will sound live,” Purcell said. “The connection with the RSL was instantaneous with a common interest in bringing awareness to what Anzac Day
really means. From that first meeting it just felt right and it’s all been about bringing that spirit to the fore and continuing it on through the generations. The support from the RSL has been second to none and from behind the scenes it’s just been amazing. From getting the list of names of fallen soldiers for the jumpers, to ticking off the guest speakers and organising honour guards for the service, we just couldn’t have asked for more.” Purcell said the football and non-football public could learn a lot from the day. “If we can get these kids thinking about helping out their mates, trusting and respecting each other, and carrying those values forward, that’d be fantastic,” he said. “We can’t charge a gate, so if we get a big crowd, with a lot of kids there experiencing the day, talking to the old heads around the place, that’s got to be a good thing. If we just get two or three kids there, who carry these values forward, I would walk away happy and think we’ve done a good job.” Two of the players who will line-up for the big-clash,
Tooradin’s Shaun Keenan and Cranbourne’s Ryan Davey, were clearly impacted when they laid eyes on the jumpers for the first time. Their enthusiasm provided the perfect example to Cranbourne president Shane Baker that the two clubs are right on track with their thoughts. “That’s what it’s all about,” Baker said. “The opportunity to be a part of it for young blokes like Ryan and Shaun, who are in their 20s and to have them feel that sense sums up what we’re trying to achieve. ”It’s a credit to Tooradin for the way they have set this up. Collingwood and Essendon have done a great job at AFL level over the last 20 years, but to have an occasion like this, locally, is just massive for the area. “Our footy club is really excited and can’t wait for the day to arrive.” Anyone interested in being part of the big day, including the purchase of a seat at the luncheon, can contact Lindsay Hyde, from the Tooradin Football Club organising committee on 0412 209 072.

John Simpson, centre, has returned to Clyde to team up with player-coach Kyle Brooke (left) and assistant Gavin Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT Adams (right). 119054 “We’re thrilled to have Simmo back on board,” Brooke said. “He’s a previous club champion of this club and he’s not just a great player but a great person as well. “We’re trying to breed a good culture within the club and to bring someone like John in and enhance what we’ve already got is just going to be a bonus for us.” Simpson has joined the Cougars as both a playing assistant to Brooke, and in a development coach-type role. “I was probably - even halfway through the year - enjoying playing with the guys at Upper Beac but I didn’t know if that’s what I wanted to do, futurewise,” Simpson said. “Due to the changes in the playing list the guys that I
went there to play with weren’t around anymore - they’ve either retired or moved elsewhere so I had a chat with Kyle and went from there.” Simpson looks back fondly on his time with the Maroons, which included scoring 88 not out in a winning District grand final. “They’re building again,” he said. “They do have some good young players coming through. It is a changing of the guard there and they have to see what they can do.” Simpson and Brooke already share a common goal for the Cougars next season; to move heaven and earth to try and get Clyde into Premier, and to stay there for the long haul - not just make up the numbers.

THE Clyde Cougars have wasted no time in their preparation for what is sure to be a mouth-watering 2014-15 West Gippsland Cricket Association District season - pouncing on one of the best all-rounders in the competition, John Simpson. The former Upper Beaconsfield Premier skipper has come off a stellar season in the local league’s top tier - scoring 509 runs at an average of 46 and taking 22 wickets at just 20.3. The 33-year-old also finished runner-up to Tooradin’s Aaron Avery in the TJ Stephenson Medal, awarded to the best player in the Premier division. He returns to Clyde after playing the 2002-03 and 200304 seasons at Cougarland, becoming Club Champion in his final season before his departure. The Berwick local has since tried his hand at DDCA Turf 1 level with Narre Warren and spent the past five years with the Maroons - steering them to the District title in his first season there. Newly re-appointed Clyde coach Kyle Brooke was playing under-16s for the Cougars last time Simpson wore the green and gold. He knows just how good Simpson has been over recent seasons in the WGCA’s top-flight, including leading the Maroons through a transition of having an experienced senior core to an exciting group of youngsters.

An Anzac Day clash awaits Pearcedale when it heads up the road to face Somerville. 118128 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

THE magnitude of the occasion is awe-inspiring for Pearcedale Football Club. Its on-field battles pale in comparison to those the Anzacs have undertaken but the Panthers will do their best to honour the Anzacs’ sacrifices as the Panthers clash with Somerville on the hallowed day this Friday. Heading to Somerville for his first Anzac Day clash, Pearcedale coach Ben Cadd said he hopes the sides live up to the significance of the day and can honour the Anzacs in a fitting way on field. “It’s a bit of a unique one - first time I’ve ever been involved playing on Anzac Day and you can see how it’s able to transcend itself in the AFL,” Cadd said. “First time we’ve had this game against Somerville - certainly in my time over four times. “From a traditional and ceremonial point of view it is a great honour to play on the day and do our best to show the required respect and dignity for the occasion.” Cadd knows getting its first win in the ledger is critically important and it needs to come from four quarters of consistent football this week in the 3912 postcode clash against its local rival Somerville. Pearcedale fell away after half time against Frankston Bombers - ceding a 23-point half time lead to lose by a solitary goal which mirrored its final term capitulation against Devon Meadows the week before. “We’re really disappointed with the way the season has started,” Cadd said. “Been really good for the six of the eight quarters and just one quarter out of both games we were weak and it cost us. “We need to be prepared to play four quarters at the same intensity and Somerville is in the same position as us, so it’s important that we get a win on the board and move our season ahead positively.” Cadd put the onus on his star full forward Pat Heijden to kick a bag and the coach wanted to keep getting young players into the senior side. “We need our full forward - Pat Heijden to kick a bag of goals as last year he had 65 in 13 games,” Cadd said. “For us we’re continuing to play young players and blood a couple more. “We’re a fairly new side from the side that made the finals last year and trying to get the right mix going forward.” The senior football clash will begin at 2pm at while the A Grade netball match between the Eagles and Panthers will start at 1.25pm. 1128699-KC17-14

Scorpions’ thriller By JARROD POTTER ESCAPING the peninsula with four points, Casey Scorpions seized a come-from-behind 14-point win over the Frankston Dolphins. Frankston had its chances to put Casey away for good, but in the Easter gift that just kept on giving, the Dolphins floundered in front of goal. The Dolphins had more scoring shots than Casey had points at one stage in the first term before the Scorpions started to gain some traction up forward through talls Tim Smith, Max Gawn and Mark Jamar. A whopping 32 behinds for the match summed up the wayward nature of both sides, with no wind, rain or other phenomena to blame. It was a system of shanking off the boot that left both sides with some
much needed goal kicking practice this week. Captain Evan Panozza exemplified his title with a number of defensive spoils that stopped likely goals arising, with good support from Demons’ defender Colin Garland in the back half. Frankston threatened to put the match away in the third, but its atrocious goal-kicking left the door open for a last-quarter Casey comeback. Jamar (38 hitouts, 10 possessions) stood up in the second half to slot two goals and bring Casey within six points at the final change. Jake Best lived up to his moniker when it mattered most, streaming through half-forward to slot three goals with the match in the balance. Best drilled the last two goals to give Casey some much needed breathing room by the final siren.
“As I said to the players, any time to can come away from Frankston with a win will be a pleasing thing,” Casey coach Rohan Welsh said. “I thought we tried to get the game back on our terms after half time. “We were sort of playing their way in the first half… good to get a bit of width and use our speed in the second half.” Melbourne will be pleased with its latest draft cultivar as Christian Salem (34 possessions, 7 marks) and James Harmes (30 possessions, 7 marks) excelled through the centre as did delisted free-agent Aiden Riley (23 possessions, 9 tackles) who was a tackling force to all who came near him. Casey jumps back into the top eight and faces Sandringham at Casey Fields on Sunday.

Casey Cardinia Football League preview - round 3
Prepare yourselves for a spine-tingler By DAVID NAGEL THE most unique and emotional atmosphere that an Australian sporting field has to offer will inspire Tooradin and Cranbourne when the two teams run out for their Anzac Day clash at Westernport Oval on Friday. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder will be 44 lucky players with their football and netball contemporaries, honouring the spirit of the Anzacs. They will then lock horns in what’s sure to be a spine-tingling environment. This will be a massive test for the Seagulls because Cranbourne has some players who have a natural affinity for the big stage. Skipper Marc Holt will be keen to set the big crowd alight with a huge-haul of goals while Michael Theodoridis, Ryan Jones and Max Gearon are all regulars on the highlight reel. In just two games, Tooradin has given clear evidence that the gap between its best and worst is still
The running power of Cranbourne’s Ryan Jones will play a key role in the big Anzac Day clash between the Eagles and Tooradin at Westernport Oval on Friday. 106294 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS wide. Their midfield leaders like Matt Wade, Phil Burns and Brett Scarcella have the talent to trouble the Eagles but it won’t be enough
and the visitors will take home the points. BERWICK’s emergence as a top-three contender will be put to the ultimate test on Saturday when Narre Warren pays a visit to Edwin Flack Reserve. The big-test against the reigning-champs is followed by a trip to Cranbourne on May 3 and will give a very clear indication of the Wickers’ potential for the rest of the season. Up until now, Rhys Nisbet’s team could hardly have been more impressive, thrashing Beaconsfield and Pakenham by around the 15goal mark. Berwick has taken on a Narre Warren type look in its first two games, with a wide spread in front of goals. The Wickers have had nine and 11 goal-kickers respectively in their first two games with 14 of their 39 goals coming from players who have spent significant time in the midfield. On the flipside, Narre gets a tremendous amount of drive from
half back. Nick Scanlon, Lee Boyle and Kain Baskaya are all penetrating kicks who set a high-standard in all facets of the game. Stopping that rebound must be a focus if the Wickers are to kick a winning score. It will take a monumental team effort because any one weak link will be exposed. The Magpies are ruthless and love a challenge. Aaron Purvis, Paul Vanschilt, Jordy and Madi Andrews and Nathan Waite can expect to be hit hard while no youngster will be spared at the coal-face. The Magpies are the masters of identifying just that one half step and then going in for the kill. They’ll do so again, shaking off a plucky Berwick outfit by 29 points. In other games, finalists from last year, Beaconsfield and Pakenham, should record their first wins for the season against Hampton Park and Keysborough respectively, while ROC and Doveton will fight out the thriller of the round at Starling Road.

Accent on great looks By ALISTAIR KENNEDY
Model range
HYUNDAI has pruned its Accent small car range with the previous flagship Premium model being dropped due to its closeness in price to the slightly larger i30 model. Only four variants are now offered - the entry-level Active, as either a hatch or sedan, the mid-spec Elite sedan, and the semi-sporty SR hatch. Previously a rather dowdy looker, the Hyundai Accent made the ugly duckling to beautiful swan switch in 2011 when Hyundai adopted its socalled ‘fluidic sculpture design’ philosophy and transformed it into one of the best looking small cars on the market. At every angle the new Accent looks so much better, from its large open-mouth hexagonal grille and swept-back headlights with a dipping roofline through to the sculpted character lines in the side that give an aerodynamic look. There’s plenty of front headroom and, despite the domed roof, there’s good headroom in the back of the hatch, and even more in the sedan. Three children are the only

viable rear seat option. The Yshaped dashboard is neat, contemporary and functional. The rear seatbacks have a 60/40 and fold flat into a boot that is comparatively large at 370 litres in the hatch and 465 litres in the sedan, is easy to load and has a security screen. Both Active and SR are available with either six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the latter a four-speed in the Active, six-speed in the SR. Elite only has the six-speed auto. A diesel variant was available during 2012 but struggled partly because of a $2600 price hike over the petrol model but also due to the lack of an automatic option.
Hyundai’s new styling theme has transformed the Accent into one of the most attractive small cars on the Australian market. It’s now been discontinued in Australia with no plans for it to return in the immediate future. With the Premium model gone, the remaining Accent models only come with the most basic features - Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, MP3-compatible CD player and Auxiliary and USB inputs. It does have media ripping and storage capabilities. There

There’s a reassuringly solid feel to it and in the urban section of our test it was in its element - sharp off the mark and when changing lanes. bic than other similarly sized cars and it’s impressively quiet for such a small car. The discontinued Premium variant was the only one to offer a reversing camera and parking sensors so we had to re-learn how to rely on our own judgement. On the motorway section of our test it cruised comfortably although it struggled a little on the steeper sections needing plenty of gear changing to maintain momentum. Into the Central Coast hinterland the Accent was less at home but still coped reasonably well with the winding, undulating roads. The occasional corrugations didn’t cause a problem for the suspension and there’s better than average steering wheel response, though there’s slight understeer under hard cornering. The manual gearbox impressed us with its well-tuned gear ratios and smoothness. The Hyundai range is available for test drive at Cranbourne Hyundai, 200 High Street, Cranbourne. Phone 5995 1188.
