(Anzac Day)
I stood alone in silence near the flame in Anzac Square, and thought about the wars and all the people who were there. I thought about the kinship…mateship born through twisted fate, about that Aussie kid in uniform and his newfound Kiwi mate. How they waltzed onto that beach at dawn…the place — Gallipoli, nineteen-fifteen Anzacs — a part of war born history. ‘Down under’ soldiers off to fight the war to end all wars, eight thousand Anzacs died right there…but who was keeping score. And so the legend started, Anzacs proud and Anzacs brave, one can’t grasp or quite imagine how they faced that final wave. To hit the shores a running, screaming at the unseen foe, hearts in utter fury at blokes they’d never get to know. Do or die the attitude, it makes me wonder how they felt, just kids on foreign soil to fight — my mind begins to melt. The flame beside me burning true here ninety-nine years on, no memories just the history for our Anzacs to belong. I’ve never seen the glory of the wars and why they were, I’ve never felt a mother’s heart just leave the soul of her. I’ve never known the anguish of the child who grew to man down the barrel of a rifle — in a war torn foreign land. Now — in this place, this Anzac Square beside this endless flame I feel a proud regard for every single brass embattled name. This flame still burns eternally for each soul who may have died for us in total sacrifice — and unbridled…Anzac pride.

Weed book growing into a huge success Two unassuming ladies are leading the way in our Biosphere with the recent launch of their co-authored book, Weeds of the Sunshine Coast. The collaborative effort has already had far-reaching positive effects with their book now being a valuable resource for various organisations, including the Queensland Herbarium, TAFE lecturers and students, Bushland care groups, councils and National Park staff on the Coast and Noosa Parks Assn, as well as numerous individuals who are serious about the care of our environment. Joan Heavey turned her passion for the environment into an everyday activity when she arrived in Tewantin in 1986. Since then, Joan has been a volunteer in bushland regeneration in this area for the last decade. In 2008, she was the recipient of the Australia Day Environment Achievement Award from the former Noosa Council, for her volunteer regeneration work at Heritage Park in Tewantin. With a background in ecology and bush regeneration, co-author Sonia MacDonald arrived in the Noosa area in 1996 and so began a life of dedication to caring for the environment. She is co-leader with Joan in the Noosa Parks Assn

Men sought over robbery attempt JOLENE OGLE Police are seeking help from the local community to find two men who attempted to rob the NewsXpress store on Hastings Street. Police allege the two males entered the store on March 29, 2014 at 10.15am, before trying to steal money from the store’s safe. CCTV footage shows one man acting as the lookout while the other man enters the store’s staffroom and attempts to open the safe. A female employee interrupted the men and they fled the store. Local police said the pair was in the store for approximately four minutes. Police are now asking for anyone in the community who may know the two men involved, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

JAIL FOR HIT AND RUN OFFENDER The man who struck a father and son as they crossed the road has been sentenced to 15 months jail and disqualified from driving for four years. Peri King was riding a motorbike on Gympie Terrace in October last year when he tried to overtake a four-wheel drive that had stopped at a pedestrian crossing. King’s motorbike collided with the father and son, nine, leaving the boy with a suspected skull fracture. King pleaded guilty to six charges, including one count each of dangerous driving, serious obstruction of police, failure to remain at the scene of an accident and driving without a licence, when he appeared in Noosa Magistrate’s Court last month. Court was adjourned until April 15 for sentencing to be considered. In addition to 15 months jail, King was fined $396 for driving an uninsured and unregistered motorbike.

Their service, our heritage RON LANE This year, for the first time on April 27 at a special Anzac ceremony, the haunting refrains of the Last Post will drift across the beaches of Coogee in Sydney. It will mark the dedication of a new cenotaph: The Fallen Life Savers Memorial.

Built to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made by Australia’s surf lifesavers in times of war, it is dedicated to the memory of our club mates throughout Australia who made the supreme sacrifice from the conflict of 1914 to present times. As such, it is also planned that an annual raising of the flag on this site will be
held in their honour at the start of each season. In the introduction for the brochure promoting this the author Scott Nash, Mayor of Randwick City, wrote, “The project is a joint partnership involving Randwick City Council, the State and Federal Governments and Surf Life Saving Australia. The memorial is situated in Goldstein Reserve along the southern end of the promenade in Coogee, New South Wales and features a bronze sculpture of a lifesaver and a soldier, a terraced seating area and landscaping works. Future works include a remembrance wall listing the names of fallen lifesavers. The memorial will serve to recognize the contribution of surf life savers in war as a distinct group who rose from protecting beachgoers at home, to fighting for our freedom in wars far away from our shores.” The project became a reality when, on June 26, 2012, Randwick Council passed a resolution to build the memorial and establish a trust fund. The trust consisted of 10 members and amongst those named were Scott Nash, Mayor of Randwick City, Phillip Vanny, CEO Surf Life Saving New South Wales and Brigadier David Mulhall Australian Defence Force. Representing Coogee Surf Life Saving Club was Tony Waller, Governor, and Pat Garcia. On October 8, 2012 Thomas Berril Landscape Design and Alan Somerville were chosen as preferred designers. The job of builder for the landscape went to Hargraves Landscapes, a highly respected Sydney company.

NEWS 5 structors tongue. Within the first year at least 50 per cent had found their way into uniform.” As Australian forces arrived in the Middle East requests for help were received from the British who found that the number of drownings amongst their troops on leave at beaches such as Tel Aviv, Gaza, Acre and Jaffa were unacceptable. The diggers reacted and work was commenced. Similar incidents occurred in the New Guinea region with calls for assistance coming from the Americans. In the words of a veteran of the Bougainville Is. campaign a high ranking American officer asked, “Can you Aussies help me? That surf is killing more of my men than the goddam’ Japanese.” They replied in the positive and patrols were soon organized. This resulted in the formation of the Solomon Islands Surf Life Saving Club. Perhaps one of the most poignant lifesaving stories comes out of the Changi POW Camp. One of the prisoners was the National President of Life Saving Australia Adrian Curlewis, a captain on the Headquarters Staff and a member of the Palm Beach club. Shortly after his arrival at Changi Curlewis called together all the lifesavers in the camp. On the pages of a small yellow note book he recorded the names and clubs of 141 lifesavers held in captivity. Sadly, as the horrors of the Burma Railroad took hold, he would mark a tiny ink cross above the name of those whose death was reported. One of those names he marked was that of Jack Cox, a member of Bondi and a National committee man. For Curlewis this was one hard cross to bear. Cox was one of his best mates. At the end of this year the construction of memorial wall and the placement of names of the fallen 3500 life savers will be commenced. This will be stage two. As the burden of the loss of lives in Afghanistan rests heavily on our shoulders, we would hope and pray that the addition of names on this wall will diminish. However, I feel that all Australians will agree that a memorial such as this is well overdue. Lest We Forget
Coogee Surf Bathing and Life Saving Club c 1912.
The Coogee Club has a very proud tradition. Formed in 1907 by a group of concerned locals, it became March Past a founding Egypt 1942 member of the surf lifesaving movement in Australia, and celebrated its centenary in 2007 the Year of the Life Saver. In its story it tells of many firsts in Australian surf club history; first night surf club carnival, first mass rescue, first shark attack and the development of the resuscitation technique.” As one reads through the pages of military history sometimes small incidents regarding former lifesavers are brought to mind. In his book The Great War author Les Carlyon describes how on July 19, 1916, after the disastrous Battle of Fromolles in which some 5000 diggers were slaughtered, Alfred Langan medical officer of the 30th Battalion and founding member of the Bondi Surf Life Saving Club, worked for 16 hours with blood up to his elbows. According to Life Saving historian C Bede Maxwell, at the outbreak of WW11 the recruiting officers found the lifesaving volunteers to be ideal. “They fitted easily into service life, took drilling in their stride, and the disciplinary vigour of the most case hardened sergeant major left them unshaken. They had qualified for the bronze medallion under the lash of the club in-

The sculpture was designed by New Zealand-born artist Alan Somerville. Settling in Sydney in 1988 he was soon being critically acclaimed for his many works, including the two iconic bronze soldiers on Anzac Bridge and three bronze sculptures at the Australian War Memorial. The memorial consists of two statues, each standing 2.1m high. One a lifesaver and the other a digger. Standing together they are looking out to sea. The design philosophy was: “Selflessness, dignity and a willingness to help others personifies the life saver and the soldier. The values of honour, valour, courage and hope are common to each role. The monument carries the message that it is one and the same man; the man who defends our beaches is the man who defends the nation. As a lifesaver he never takes his eyes off the ocean, which translates to the remembrance wall where the names of lifesavers lost at war are always looking out to sea.” Former Mayor of Randwick City and Trust member Tony Bowen in his contribution tells how it all started. “The council was approached by the Coogee Surf Club to look at building a national memorial for fallen lifesavers, that is members of the lifesaving community who had lost their lives in the wars: a uniquely Australian, very evocative concept that I was delighted to be able to support. There will be a number of services there throughout the year and I think that’s the time the memorial will come to shine in our countries mind” The Governor of Coogee Surf Life Saving Club Tony Waller also wrote along similar lines. “When the call to war came, and our lifesavers went it decimated the membership of the Club; women and children kept the clubs running in those war years. Their service is our heritage.

The event kicks off in Eumundi’s School of the Arts on Memorial Drive from 5pm, immediately following the Carnivale’s Saturday parades of the ‘Airbrush’ and ‘Brush & Sponge’ full body art competitions. “The excitement will be fever pitch after an amazing showcase by some of the best body artists in the business, and that energy will continue into the night at the Sleepwalkers event. It will be a unique opportunity to celebrate along with artists, models and enthusiastic art lovers,” said Event Manager Danielle Taylor “While models are likely to be ‘dressed’ in their body art from the day, other guests are encouraged to get into the mood, too,

Parking trial aims to boost business Noosa Council is working with the Peregian Business Association and residents on a parking trial designed to free up spaces for customers and improve traffic flow around Peregian Village. The two, all-day parking lots, north and south of Peregian Beach Surf Club, will soon be changed to four-hour regulated areas.
Business Association members are encouraging their staff to use the council car parks in Rufous Street, behind the bowls club, or on David Low Way. By walking a few extra metres, staff will help create space in the village for customers. Parking restrictions on the western side of Kingfisher Drive and Plover Street - currently on Sundays -will be extended to “no standing anytime” to relieve congestion on the narrow roads. The changes, scheduled to
be in place this week, are temporary measures ahead of a proposed master planning process for Peregian Village which will look at parking solutions from the foreshore through to the recreation precinct. Councillor Frank Wilkie said the trial parking changes follow consultation with the business association and residents. “A recent study found that every car space outside a business used by an employee denied parking for up to 10 cus-
tomers that day,” Cr Wilkie said. “Even if 80 per cent of the 125 all-day spaces in the dune carparks are no longer used by staff, that potentially means 800 customers will more readily find parking in the village during business hours.” The alternative car parks are just 250 metres from the Village with access via a pedestrian pathway on the northern side of the Peregian Hotel or along the David Low Way.
Have your say on Queensland’s debt The Noosa community can have its say on how to address the State’s major debt issue. Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes has invited the Noosa community to respond to a first-time-in-Australia campaign by the Treasurer, Tim Nicholls. “The unprecedented Strong Choices campaign is in direct response to the unprecedented scale of the State’s debt which now drains $4 billion in interest repayments every year. It demands an unprecedented response if this debt burden is to be brought under control,” Mr Elmes said. Every Queenslander has the chance now to design their own debt reduction strategy and deliver the results to the Queensland Government as part of the Strong Choices discussion. “The Treasurer has launched an interactive People’s Budget website tool as the next step in continuing the conversation with Queenslanders on the Strong Choices we face to secure our future and pay down the $80 billion in debt accumulated over the last ten years. “We have called this the Strong Choices campaign because that’s what is now necessary to reduce the $80 billion debt and the $4 billion annual interest burden it places on all Queenslanders,” Mr Elmes said. “To pay down this debt, Queenslanders face three choices – significantly increased taxes, reduced services or the sale or lease of some assets. “This unprecedented level of community consultation and communication will enable every Queenslander who wants to take part to have the opportunity to provide detailed feedback on exactly what their priorities for the State are and to make their own choices as to how they would reduce the State’s debt.” To have your say go online at www.StrongChoices.qld.gov.au or visit the Strong Choices booths at Noosa Civic Shopping Centre from May 6 to 10, or Noosa Fair Shopping Centre in Lanyana Way, Noosa Junction, from May 12 to 15.

Collaboration key to success The 14th Sunshine Coast Business Confidence Survey has now opened with a traditional focus on general business conditions, as well as a special look at collaboration opportunities within the local business community.
Secrets founder Jane Meredith with competition winners Keith and Diana Allison
Keith knows the secret! Keith Allison couldn’t wait to slip the stunning Secrets trilogy ring onto the hand of his wife, Diana. The couple will celebrate 61 years of marriage in November and Keith couldn’t think of a better way to cele-
brate their love than by winning the stunning Secrets ring that features three of Secrets’ signature diamond simulants set in 10ct gold. Keith kept the win a secret for almost a week before surprising Diana at Secrets’ flagship Noosa Heads store last week.
The Survey is conducted by Boardroom Business and is the most widely supported cooperative business tool on the Coast today, with over 30 business groups and government agencies involved. Since its inception in 2008, the Busi-
ness Confidence Survey Series has regularly achieved a high response rate, with approximately 400 businesses participating in each survey. Steve Lawrence from Boardroom Business said that with this level of reach all business types and sizes can both participate and share in the results for a collective view about local Sunshine Coast business conditions. “Using the results of the six monthly survey, we can track trends in confidence across the Coast as well as see what constraints and issues are relevant over time and how these fluctuate alongside what is going on nationally and globally,” he said.
In addition to the regular baseline confidence questions, this survey is seeking to find out how measuring business collaboration opportunities can provide mutual benefits for Sunshine Coast businesses. “We want to gain an understanding of the linkages between businesses, especially for growth and innovation purposes,” said Mr Lawrence. Coast speakers set to inspire Noosa local and a key player in Noosa’s de-amalgamation, Bob Ansett will speak at the Business revival event on Friday, May 9. This one-day event will bring together some of the best business speakers on the Coast to motivate and inspire more than 200 local business owners, from 8am to 5pm, at Nambour Civic Centre. Bob Ansett set up Budget Rental Cars as a two-man business and grew it into a $400 million company. He was
described by BRW as ‘the entrepreneur’s entrepreneur’. Joining Bob will be Barry Bull, who turned a Toombul music store into a must-go location for hundreds of world famous musicians, and Ted O’Brien, a community leader and company director who challenged Clive Palmer for the Fairfax seat in 2013. Topics covered will include new ways of marketing, customer service, social media and networking.
Mortgage Matters
On the day there will also be a mini business expo, a massive auction for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and a unique ‘business hot seat’ event for one lucky business owner as well as lots of prizes, including a new Ipad. Tickets for this event are $44 or you can purchase a business package of 10 tickets and get a stall at the business expo for only $220 (limited spots left). Phone 54411548 for more information.

2014 is shaping up to be a bonanza year for borrowers who are seeking an excellent home loan, with property prices climbing and interest rates hovering around historical lows. While there is no doubt lenders have become a little stricter on credit policy thanks to the introduction of “responsible lending”, it is fair to say the doors are still open for borrowers who can show they meet the lender’s requirements like strong income, good deposit and stable employment.
It boils down to two things!
Indeed, regardless if you are a first time buyer, refinancer, investor, upgrader or downgrader, there are many home loan options and interesting home loan sweeteners out there for you. Following is just a few of the options that may be available, should a borrower qualify:
s Total waiver of application fees and settlement fees with selected lenders
An inability to make financial progress is a problem that spans all age groups. It affects double income couples with no children just as much as those with young families.
(savings of up to $600)
Perhaps you are already approaching retirement age, and apart from superannuation or a small business, you have nothing much to show for a lifetime of hard work.
s Refinance rebates of up to $1250 to switch lenders s Professional Package first year fees waived s Nil monthly fees s One lender is even offering up to $1.00 a litre off petrol for a maximum of 50 litres per week for up to 2 years (discount depends epe ds on o loan oa size) s e) In addition to these borrower sweeteners, a lot of lenders are heavily discounting their rates in a bid to o lure borrowers.
In the end it boils down to two things; money coming in, and money going out. Most of us know exactly what’s coming in but we are

Guitar legend coming to Coast Internationally renowned guitar master, Phil Emmanuel will be back on the Coast in May and will once again be sharing his skills and knowledge with local up-and-coming artists attending the Phil Emmanuel Guitar Master Class at Sunshine Coast TAFE. Over the past eight years Phil has shared his wealth of expertise with over 130 aspiring guitarists, with the Master Class consisting of nine weeks of indepth tuition with support from industry-experienced TAFE music teachers. “The master class allows me to share my skills with the stars of the future and I just love helping them along,” he said. “We have a ball in class and at the concert and we are lucky to have some of the best teachers in the music department at Sunshine Coast TAFE and I think the training facility is one of the best in Queensland.” The class gives students the opportunity to hone their skills and perform alongside Phil, with the course culminating in a live onstage performance to showcase the students’ skills in an event open to the public to be held in July. Sunshine Coast TAFE music teacher Glen Knox says the Master Class has always been a huge success and continues to attract students who want to hone their skills alongside a living guitar legend. The Master Class commences on May 3. For further information on programs available through Sunshine Coast TAFE phone 5457 1000 or visit sunshinecoast.tafe.qld. gov.au
Chorale’s Hettie wins role in OperaQ’s “Project Puccini” JIM FAGAN

Later this year Opera Queensland will take its epic production of Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” a classic tale of life in 1840’s Bohemian Paris, to eight regional centres with 36 adults and 12 children getting the chance to be in the chorus. The $2 million initiative is called Project Puccini and auditions have now been completed for the performances on the Gold Coast, Maryborough, Toowoomba, Ipswich, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Rockhampton. Noosa Chorale soprano Hettie van Wyk has just been told she has won a part and admitted to being “excited and thrilled at working with such magnificent people” when Noosa Today called to congratulate her. Hettie doesn’t know how many singers took part in the OperaQauditions in Maryborough but says they were held over three days and everyone had six to 10 minutes. “I sang Handel’s love song ‘Care Selve.’ “The performance will be in Maryborough in August and I will have to go to there for rehearsals
over a 10 week period.” Hettie and Handel go back a long way. She is currently busy
practising Handel’s “Messiah” which Noosa Chorale will presenton Sunday June 8 at The J. This
time she is in the chorus but in 1994 she was one of the four soloists when the late Leonard Spira conducted the newly formed choir in its inaugural performance of “Messiah” prompting newspaper reviews like “the concert at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Centre shows what a wealth of musical talent there is in Noosa.” Before joining the Chorale, Hettie appeared in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” with the Pocket Opera in Queensland, the rock opera “Boadicea” with the Queensland Folk Federation and earlier in New Zealand with the Gisborne Opera Company. She is proud of her record of only having missed “two or three Chorale concerts in the last 20 years. Rehearsals are lively and a lot of fun. I’ve developed lots of friendships. It’s a very friendly group. I’m particularly thankful we’ve had wonderful musicians like Leonard Spira and Adrian King (choir music directors) to lead us. “I’m looking forward to doing“Messiah” again with its spiritually uplifting and meaningful music but, even more, I enjoy singing with such a group of dedicated choristers and a fantastic orchestra,”

RACHEL DAVIES Tinbeerwah FIREWORK PLEA Fireworks used to be so much fun when I was a boy in the UK many years ago but somehow they don’t fit in with Noosa. On Saturday night at 9.30pm my baby was awakened and frightened by them and it took hours to placate her. It’s the worse I have ever seen her. For those they don’t care about children, could I mention that the wonderful bird life in Noosa are equally frightened by them and no doubt flying around in panic in the dark is very disturbing for them also. Obviously for marking major events when we all know they will be used like New Year Day it isn’t a problem but without notice seems totally thoughtless.
HOWARD PETERS Noosa EDITOR’S NOTE: Fireworks can also be very frightening for pets and many run away in fear at these times. Please keep your pets safe indoors during firework displays. DECISION UNFAIR As residents of Old Tewantin we, like the majority of residents, welcomed our council back with open arms. After reading Brett Godfrey’s open letter I feel he made some very valid points regarding ways of addressing noise on the Island if it was opened up to more guests, and their contribution that has been made to the community. I’m sure also late at night there are lots of noise from parties and drinking that would echo all along the foreshore. Whilst I am all for keeping our Noosa as is I cannot believe that the Council vetoed this on one person’s say so and, if this is the case, where is the fairness in all this? Does that mean any of us can vetoe anything that comes along and Council will bow accordingly? If so we are in for a whacko time!
PAM SWAN Tewan n
WE KNOW THE RISKS In response to “tackle unfair” written by Terry Cowlam regarding the injury to Alex McKinnon. How can you compare being tackled on a footy field to being tackled in the street? Of course if you’re tackled against your will in an uncontrolled environment it’s an assault. If you willingly enter the footy arena you know what you are in for and there are rules and safe play codes to protect players. Unfortunately, as in all aspects of life and other sports, there are accidents and those that will break the rules. If we were to analyse the statistics we would be banning body surfing as the number of neck and spine injuries caused by people hitting sand bars head first is high. I could list plenty of other sports and activities that should be changed due to similar injuries occurring. I have watched kids from U7 play the game of rugby league, it is their chosen sport, their parents support them and their mates play. They are aware at an early age of the dangers of the sport - yes it is a contact sport, yes you could get hurt - but it is this element of danger that binds every player in mutual respect and understanding. The very essence of the game is designed to test a player’s courage, skill and sportsmanship and these personal attributes are enhanced by the very nature of the games contact element. Rules have been refined over the years but the game is what it is – probably the toughest contact team sports there is. If an individual is not willing to accept that risk then they choose a safer sport. Yes I worry when my boy runs onto the footy paddock but I also worry when he walks to school, when he attends nippers carnivals in a heavy surf, when he gets his first car and the worry list goes on. My boy has chosen rugby league, he loves it, as I’m sure a young Alex McKinnon loved it when he was a junior dreaming of playing NRL. What happened was an accident, the opposition tacklers would have no intent of causing serious injury to this kid and I’m sure those Melbourne players will have their own demons to face because of what has happened. In every sport there are rules broken and players who are unethical but the game itself is not to blame – its very nature reflects our history of struggle and hardship – that’s why we are drawn to it and that is why we are so bloody good at it. Stop the knee jerk reactions and leave the game alone.

WREAKING HAVOC Well done the people who write in and complain about Noosa being a retiree enclave. They are so educated. If we didn’t have all these retirees up here we wouldn’t have had to provide all that extra infrastructure. Let’s have a look: speed bumps in shopping centres, wiggles before roundabouts, police radar, shaded skate parks, shaded play areas, graffiti, security guards, longer drinking hours, extra police, surveillance cameras, hooning regulations, the list goes on and on. Retirees bring no value into the area at all. Most are just trying to freeload. They love messing-up, they sit around in parks getting drunk, leave their mess, use foul language all the time, urinate where they feel it, king hit innocent people, mugging, camping in carparks, and they love to do most of it at holiday time when everyone else just wants to relax. Why can’t they behave properly, use the cafes, spend a bit of that free unearned pension millions that is busting their bank accounts. Why can’t they spend some of it to provide some work for us! In my area, Peregian, every holiday period we have to suffer from these retirees doing graffiti on the toilet blocks at beach entrance car parks, smashing chairs and benches we put in the dunes for them to watch the surf, leave booze-up party stuff on the beach, smash beer bottles in the cycle lanes and bike/footpaths, walk dogs off lead on non-dog beaches, throw their doggie bags in dune trees, ride Zimmer frames and scooters in the village area ignoring signs prohibiting same, use mobile phones while driving, do 80kph in 50 zones, park all day in half hour zones, snap trees on the nature
The toilet block at the north end of Peregian Esplanade after it was vandalised this month
strip, litter as they feel like it, I mean, what is it with these retirees, don’t they understand that all their working life they never paid a single cent towards all the facilities council keeps providing for them to stop them getting bored in their old age. When we take their driving licence off them all they do is whinge that we don’t provide a bus service for them, jeezz use your Zimmer frame, pinch a bike or skate board, mug a cabbie, what’s wrong with you? I mean let’s face it, if we didn’t have these dammed retirees wreaking havoc around Noosa all the time, our rates would be a lot cheaper, life would be safer and people under 50 years of age would be able to spend so much more time setting a good example for these out of control retirees, instead of just complaining about them. I suppose that’s the price we have to pay for not keeping them under control and teaching them respect has to be earned and not just given. Bugger.

UNIMAGINABLE TORTURE All well and good for Justice Jarrod Bleijie to announce more severe penalties for those brutes who subject animals to unimaginable torture and brutality; most of whom get off Scott free and continue their horrific crimes. What we need to see is apathetic Judges and Magistrates impose these new penalties and some uniformity in their decisions. Many of us remain appalled that our legal system views animals so lowly as to impose paltry and meaningless sentences. If you’re angry too, next time you see a totally inappropriate sentence applied to one of these scumbags, despite the new “severe penalties”, bombard Justice Bleijie with your protest.

Visitor Information Centre celebrates The 90-plus volunteer team at the Hastings Street Visitor Information Centre was in party mode this week as the Centre celebrated its fifth birthday.
Tourism Noosa’s volunteers at the Hastings Street Visitor Information Centre
What quite possibly might be the busiest building in Noosa with over 200,000 visitors walking through its doors each year, the Noosa Visitor Information Centre celebrated its birthday yesterday, Wednesday, with over 150 industry members, including the Noosa Mayor and Councillors, attending the birthday celebrations. Located in the heart of Hastings Street, the Visitor Information Centre grew from small beginnings in the late 1980s as a bus shelter before a purpose-built Centre was built in 2009. Framed by a cool forest canopy and surrounded by landscaped native gardens, the Centre, designed by local designers Bark Architects, is constructed of 100 per cent recycled steel, recycled Australian hardwood and plantation grown pine and features a distinctive roof design which was inspired by the natural curve of a leaf.
The Centre has won two prestigious awards in the past few years: the 2012 Queensland Tourism Awards Best Visitor Information Centre in Queensland and the ASI Queensland 2009 Steel Building Design Award. “For many of the two million visitors to Noosa each year, the Visitor Information Centre is the first point of call for information on accommodation, tours and activities in the region. Our team of holiday consultants and volunteers assist with over 200,000 face-to-face enquiries each year and the Centre provides publications, fact sheets and maps on the Noosa region along with over 500 Tourism Noosa member brochures, highlighting the wide range of experiences on offer within the region” said Tourism Noosa General Manger, Damien Massingham. “As we celebrate the Centre’s fifth birthday, it is also a positive reminder of the importance of the tourism industry to our local economy with over $900 million injected into the local economy [source: National and International Visitor Survey, year ending September 2013]”. 24 APRIL 2014

The paddle-out for Hobie. PHOTO PAUL HOLMES
Spring break in California LIFE OF BRINE PHIL JARRATT
What a week it’s been in California! Clear skies, cool mornings giving way to beautiful warm days. We hit the ground running and haven’t stopped until today, Easter Sunday, when it was time to relax a little, catch a few chilly waves at the end of the street, and spend a leisurely afternoon in our little studio at the bottom of the garden, watching Bells on the iPad and catching up on a bit of work. I’ve been doing a book promotion tour of California’s surf museums, a great excuse for catching up with old mates from the South Bay of LA down to North County, San Diego. The first gig was at the California Surf Museum, America’s oldest, in downtown Oceanside.
The museum president, Jim Kempton, is an old colleague of mine from Surfer Magazine in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their publicist, Keiko Beatie, is another pal who ran the entertainment program at the surf festival for me back in 2010. Between the two of them, they ensured we had a great turn-out for the presentation, even though Keiko was scarily busy with the launch of a new cable TV station, The Weed Channel. This is one big change I’m noticing in California since my last visit three years ago. It’s like some one dialled the clock back to 1975, when High Times and the Marijuana Monthly were required reading and you could never see who was at the party for the cloud of blue smoke. Now everyone seems obsessed with medical marijuana and the opportunity to live your life legally stoned. Smoking parlours have cropped up on every sleazy strip mall and weed ads are thicker than hookers in the fish-wrap media. I have to admit I don’t get it, although I do understand that legal hemp has many positive applications and the issue is a lot bigger than a bunch of aging stoners getting their stash on medical benefits. But, I dunno, it’s just so last century.

N t stop t on the th Boomerang B t C l Next tour was California’s biggest surf museum, the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center in San Clemente, where I was thrilled to share the podium with a childhood hero of mine, Paul Strauch. Paul is now the executive director of SHACC, but back in the 1960s he was the smoothest of Hawaiian surfers, the originator of the “Strauch Stretch” cheater five, and a member of the Duke Kahanamoku Surf Team who travelled the world with Duke in his final years. Paul, who is now past 70 and looks about 50, is a true gentleman who doesn’t often make a big deal about his storied past, but I managed to convince him to join me for an evening’s discussion about his time with Duke. I probably know as much about Duke Kahanamoku as anyone alive, but I was fascinated to hear some wonderful, never-published stories. Good Friday was also a day for honouring a true surfing hero, when more than 1000 surfers paddled out at Doheny to join a flotilla of small boats and, of course, Hobie Cats, to celebrate the life of the pioneer surfboard and catamaran designer Hobie Alter. He went on to open S Southern California’s first surf shop at Dana P Point, and subsequently to revolutionize sailing with the Hobie Cat. I had goose bumps (or chicken skin, as they say over here) when the sad sounds of Aloha Oe drifted across the beach from Dana Point, and people said their final farewells to Hobie. The last gig of the week turned out to be the most fun, as you would expect from something organised by former world champion and promoter extraordinaire Peter Townend. PT has been resident in Huntington Beach for more than 30 years and is the unofficial mayor of “Surf City”. He’s also a big noise at the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum, which hosted a Saturday afternoon soiree that brought all the local surf community together, including the legendary Mexican, Roberto Chuy Madrigal, and Robert Montgomery, another original member of the Duke surf team. After a great session and selling a lot of books, we hiked a block and a half to the HB Pier where we hoisted a few at Duke’s Bar, an appropriate end to a cool little tour. Now it’s time to get south of the border. I feel a tequila or two coming on.

Norway honours Noosa pilot’s bravery JIM FAGAN
Recognition of the bravery of allied fighters in desperate battles across Norway’s western skies during World War II is now underway with an exhibition planned for Norway’s War Museum on the island of Herdla outside the city of Bergen. And organisers particularly want to honour Ian Murray, of Noosa Heads, who was just 22 years old and a warrant officer when he flew his Beaufighter with 455 Squadron (Coastal Command) on missions to strafe German shipping, defying mur-
derous cross fire from anti-aircraft guns. They particularly want to tell his incredible story of survival when he and navigator Flight Sergeant Don Mitchell (then 21) survived repeated attacks by six Focke-Wulf 190 fighters, escaping after 10 minutes of ducking and dodging and being hit by bullets while hugging the sides of the mountains and fiords. As Ian, now 92, told Noosa Today, “I flew so low my props were blowing leaves off the ground but we escaped by flying into a small cloud and out to sea.” Ian said he had no instrument panel as a shell had hit the panel and blown it out. Also, his radio receiver

wasn’t working but he could transmit. “A 20mm shell blew up my parachute, which I was sitting on, and something burst through the wall behind Don leaving his chute in a tangle of wiring so we couldn’t jump.” With his wheels and landing gear also damaged he knew he had to crash land somewhere so Ian decided to try to make it back to his home base at Dallochy in Scotland. “Don was pretty keen for me to do this as he said he wanted to show the boys back at the base the bullet holes. He didn’t want to land just anywhere. I managed to slide in with a bit of a shudder at Dallochy and, as I headed for my briefing with the intelligence officer, I saw Don running round the airplane with his arms outstretched from his sides showing the boys how we escaped.” Noosa Today contacted Norwegian historian, politician and board member of Museum Vest, Kjell Arve Vorland, who said Herdla Museum was set up in May 1995 to commemorate the liberation of Norway on May 1945. It is situated on the site of a former Luftwaffe base on Herdla. It focuses on war history and its exhibitions include the Norwegian local resistance movement and aircraft used

in the German air and sea defence systems. Mr Vorland now wants to explore further the air war over western Norway and include what he describes as “Ian’s fascinating story.” He has written to Ian, saying, “I believe I speak for all Norwegians
when I offer my heartfelt gratitude for your efforts during the hardships of our country. We want to share your story and establish it as a part of our museum for coming generations to get to know and appreciate. What you did for us will never be forgotten.”

A letter from the Western Front JIM FAGAN Private James McGrath was just 18 when he admitted to being a “bit cold and feeling a little homesick” in his letter to his sister, Myra, from a battlefield in France in 1917.
James McGrath
He had just come back to the Western Front after leave in Scotland and London. He was only in London for two days but it’s clear he didn’t think much of the place. “It’s nearly as bad to live there as it is to be in France because you don’t know when you are going to get skittled.” His letter is treasured by the McGraths, a pioneer family who came to Cooroy in 1907 when the town was first surveyed and whose descendants still live there. Cooroy/Pomona RSL Sub-branch stalwart Kennedy McGrath, who will be 78 on Sunday, told Noosa Today how James’s father, also called James, came from Meroo Meadow in NSW with wife Sophie and six children. “They settled in rough huts at “Happy Jack Creek” a few miles to the west of the town.” A copy of James’s letter is now held by the Australian War Memorial in Can-
berra, and he tells how Scotland is a great place to spend a holiday. “The Scotch people think a lot of us Australians. They can’t do enough for us. Boys are pretty scarce up there and girls are plentiful and I’m not shy like I used to be. “I sent a parcel to mother with a couple of brooches in it and one of them is for you. There was one fault with my leave that was it went too quick. “Well, we are having lovely weather here at present. I only wish it would always stop like this. I am dreading this winter. I don’t know I will stand it.” Sixteen months later James was dead, killed by an enemy shell while fighting with the 14th Field Artillery Brigade in the battle for Cambrai. The date was October 22, 1918, and peace was only 20 days away. James wasn’t quite 21. War, death and military duty thread the lives of members of the McGrath family. William, James’s brother and Kennedy’s father, was 18 when he went overseas with the 2nd Light Horse in 1918. He also served in the Volunteer Defence Corps from 1942 to 1945. His first cousin, Walter McGrath, 26,of Pomona, was killed in action in October 1918 during the assault on the Hin-

li near Beaurevoir B i in i France F denburg line and his brother in law, Len Boxsell, was an ambulance driver with the 7th Field Ambulance, being wounded three times during his three years of rescuing hurt Diggers. Kennedy’s sister, Marie, served in the Women’s Royal Australian Auxiliary Air Force in the Second World War and his brother, Alan, who lives at Pomona, with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan from 1946 to 1948. “He wanted to go to World War II but was too young,” Kennedy said. Kennedy’s service was with the Royal Australian Navy. In 1954 he was on HMAS Vengeance when it went to Japan in 1954 to pick up RAAF 77 Squadron which served in Korea. Later he served with the Far East Strategic Reserve in Malaya. Today his grandson, Sean May, is a sub-lieutenant in the Navy.

‘We’ve only seven men left, sir
. . . me, my four brothers and two others” JIM FAGAN FROM PAGE 1
It is 1919. The bridegroom stands proudly beside his smiling bride. His hands are clasped, perhaps to hide the thumb he lost in the war. His uniform hides his other wounds. With him are his four brothers and behind the bride are her five brothers. The Great War is over, the boys have come home and it’s time to celebrate. What makes this photograph so special is that, statistically, one, probably two, of these brave lads shouldn’t be there. They all joined up in 1914, landed at Gallipoli, fought in Egypt and on the Western Front in France and Belgium. Of the 416,809 Australians who enlisted more than 60,000 were killed before the war ended in 1918 but these young Diggers survived. The photograph belongs to 88-year-old Allan Niblett, of Tewantin, and, as he says, it was a miracle they all came back. “What odds would you give? It’s like winning Tatts Lotto three times in one week.” The bridegroom is Allan’s father, Richard, and the photograph was taken in Drysdale, Victoria. “My mum, Christina, was Dad’s childhood sweetheart and they were married pretty well straightaway after he came home. Mum’s mother had 11 children and six of her sons were Anzacs, five of them coming home. “The girls gave the boys a prayer book each and they kept them in their tunic pockets. One of them, Tom, sent the prayer book home with a bullet stuck in it. There was a letter saying, ‘Dear Mother, you can see I wasn’t meant to die in this war.’ And he didn’t. The day after peace was declared he was walking across mud on a plank in France. The plank slipped and he fell on a disused bomb which exploded and killed him instantly.” “Dad was a sergeant and in his platoon at Gallipoli there were 24 Diggers which included his four brothers. They were ordered to charge
Allan Niblett and his treasured photograph
the Turks’ trenches and they were pushed back. They were ordered to charge again and once more they were pushed back. Blokes were falling everywhere. “Their captain said, ‘Muster your men and charge again. This’ll be a
surprise. They won’t expect three times.’ Dad said to him, “Well, sir. There’s me, my four brothers and two others left in the platoon. We’ve only seven.” “He was told, ‘Boats just dropped a few off so you can have this bloke.’
The kid looked about 15 and asked Dad, ‘What am I supposed to do, mister?’ He didn’t know enough to call him Sergeant. “Dad replied, ‘When I whistle, we charge. Have a bullet up your spout and when you a see a Turk up shoot
him or put a bayonet in him.’ “Dad blew the whistle, bullets flew everywhere and the kid froze so Dad took his hand and led him across to the trench. This Turk got up, shot at Dad, who was lining up his rifle, and took his thumb off and part of his right ear. He never saw the kid again.” “Dad and his four brothers were in from Day 1 to the end. He was wounded twice more, shot in the leg and the thigh in France. He was recommended for bravery three times.” Allan’s Dad was also gassed in the war but in 1939, when he was 47, he was one of the first to volunteer when World War II was declared. Said Allan: “He served for two and a half years overseas until it was revealed he had been gassed and he was discharged.” Allan was 18 when he joined up in 1944 to serve in the Second World War. “I was a bomb defuser and some of the work was disarming mustard gas shells which Australia wasn’t supposed to have. They reckoned a lot had been left over from the First War.” When the war ended he was 19 and a sergeant. “I left the army but joined up again later to train the blokes for Korea.” Military service is continued in the family as his grandson, John Chubb, is an engineer in the Australian Army. There is a tragic footnote to this story. In 1953 Allan was in Tasmania nursing his mother who was dying from cancer. He received a call from the police at Queenscliff, Victoria, saying his father had been mugged and killed and his medals stolen. “He was wearing his medals because it was Anzac Day and he had been marching with his mates,” said Allan. “They never caught who did it but years later I got the medals back. My grandson has them now, along with the prayer book with the bullet.” Tomorrow morning, Allan will be at the Cenotaph at Tewantin. He’s had replicas of his Dad’s medals made and he will be wearing them along with his own. He’s not sure if he will march yet but he knows where his thoughts will be. “I’ll think of Dad. He was the most beautiful father.”

How a WW1 French orphan was smuggled to a new life in Cooroy JIM FAGAN Local schoolchildren’s eyes light up when Ron Sutton from Cooroy-Pomona RSL sub branch takes the Anzac Day message to them and tells the story of “Young Digger,” one of the most moving and flamboyantly outrageous stories of Aussie big heartedness to come out of the First World War. And what it makes it even more meaningful to the kids is that the incredible story belongs to a young boy named Henri Tovell, who went to school in Cooroy 96 years ago. The story starts in France in 1918 when a young orphan boy came begging for food from No 4 Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps at Biggendorf in Germany. The boy’s father, a French soldier was killed when allied troops retreated from the Germans at Mons in 1914 and his mother and sister died when the family home near Lille was shelled soon after.
Henri survived by attaching himself to several British army units and is believed to have been about 10 years old when he walked into the airmen’s mess in 1918 shortly after peace was declared.
Tim and Ted put the boy in an oatsack for the journey to Le Havre and then Southampton for the trip to Australia. Squadron members called him “Young Digger” and he and Tim Tovell who, with his brother Ted had worked as builders and painters in the Queensland bush, took an instant liking to each other with the brothers “borrowing” a couple of army greatcoats and making a uniform for the new recruit.
“Young Digger” Henri Tovell with Ted Tovell (centre) and brother Tim
Tim decided to “adopt” Henri and smuggle him home to Australia to live with his wife, Gertie, daughter Nancy and son Timmy. A kit bag wasn’t big enough so Tim and Ted put the boy in an oatsack for the journey to Le Havre and then Southampton for the trip to Australia. Henri was by this time in a wicker basket marked “Sporting Goods.” Queensland Premier Tom Ryan, who was on board, discovered him off the Australian coast and asked immigration authorities to let him stay. He was raised by the Tovells, who were now living in Cooroy. According to Ron Sutton, 80, some of the houses Tim built in Cooroy are still there. RSL sub branch member, Kennedy McGrath, recalls his aunt, Marjorie Cambage going to school with Henri, who later became an apprentice fitter and turner with the RAAF in Victoria. Sadly, the war waif, who found a home and loving family in Cooroy, died in a road crash in Melbourne in 1928. It was just a few weeks before his 21st birthday.

Orchids for your garden JOHN GREEN Orchids make terrific landscaping plants and there are many varieties that can be cultivated successfully in Sunshine Coast gardens.
I find the easiest are Australian natives, Soft cane Dendrobiums, Oncidums and certain varieties of Vandas. Want to learn more about these orchids? The Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society meets at Tinbeerwah Hall
I live in the beautiful Mary Valley and we are colder than the coastal strip and I still grow many orchids successfully in the garden. Most of the orchids I grow are epiphytic (grow on trees) and when established flower regularly.
The eyecatching Dendrobium bigibbum
on the first Saturday of each month at 1pm. Everyone is welcome and you can bring any troublesome plants with you as we have a plant clinic each meeting. The club is also hosting a show in conjunction with Co-
orooy Fusion on May 9 &10. These shows are a great way to see many exotic flowers in one place. There will also be experienced growers on hand to help. The show is well worth the $2 entry fee.

CHANGING WITH THE SEASONS…
The difference is clear with Accolade
The company has developed an innovative, modern and stylish alternative to PVC cafe and bistro blinds. “Using a similar material, the PVC is stretched and held tightly inside a durable aluminium frame, giving the optical appearance of glass,” Mr Menzel said. “They are designed for the harsh Australian climate, preventing strong winds and rain entering your outdoor area. The system is designed and retrofitted to suit your existing outdoor area, whether that is a deck, alfresco area or pergola. With the clarity of glass, the screens are lightweight and can be easily opened without having to roll up and downa traditional blind allowing clients to enjoy interrupted views.” Mr Menzel said Accolade offered many benefits, such as no PVC creasing from continually rolling up and down; significantly improved clarity; safe and lightweight with no bottom tracking system required and importantly, the cost is comparable to good quality PVC cafe blinds.
Accolade Weather Screens is a family-owned company recognised as an industry leader with offices in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. “We want the name Accolade to be synonymous with bi-folding, sliding and fixed PVC screens,” Mr Menzel said. All products are offered in a variety of colours and inserts, including clear and tinted PVC as well as sun block out and insect-proof membranes. What’s really going on inside your pet’s mouth? Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) spokesperson Dr Christine Hawke said many owners who do everything they can to keep their animals healthy don’t understand why dental treatment is so important. “Dental problems can often mean a disease is present and their pet could be suffering. There are lots of myths out there that sometimes lead owners to believe there’s nothing wrong with their pet’s dental health and we need to help owners understand these misperceptions.” According to Dr Hawke, here are
some of the most common myths surrounding dental health in pets: MYTH: Bad breath and tooth loss are inevitable in pets at any age TRUTH: Bad breath means infection. Dogs and cats lose teeth as a result of disease. MYTH: Dogs and cats don’t feel dental pain the way people do. TRUTH: If something is uncomfortable, unpleasant or painful for us, it’s also painful for pets. Dogs and cats teeth have similar nerve supply to humans. Unfortunately unlike us, cats and dogs are very good at hiding signs of oral pain. It’s important to try and notice the more subtle signs to prevent prolonged infection and discomfort. This includes a reluctance to have the mouth handled, chewing on one side or swallowing food without chewing. MYTH: If my pet had oral disease surely I’d know!
TRUTH: Most owners don’t look in their pet’s mouth and even if they did they may not recognise the signs of disease. MYTH: Scaling and polishing can be performed without general anaesthesia. TRUTH: Anaesthesia is an absolute requirement for dental procedures, including scaling and polishing. It’s not possible to examine all surfaces without general anaesthesia and if there’s any pathology or pain, it’s not humane for the patient without anaesthesia. MYTH: If we extract teeth, dogs and cats won’t be able to eat properly. TRUTH: Pets do fine without all their teeth and dental extraction is often the fastest way to resolve oral disease. In fact many pets eat much better after the source of infection and pain has been removed.
Eumundi’s gone to the dogs! Organisers of Woofstock, a festival for dogs, are gearing up for another successful event at Eumundi Markets on Sunday, September 14. And the good news this year, is that it’s free! When Woofstock was launched in Eumundi in October 2010 it was a resounding success and with the support of local stall holders, the Eumundi Markets, dogs and their owners, this year is going to be full of fun for everyone. Woofstock has established ongoing support from dog
shelters throughout Queensland with their educational stalls on site at each event. The festival provides an opportunity for local canines to display their talents and a chance for local businesses to showcase their products and services. “What sets Woofstock
apart from other pet events is that it is strictly geared towards dogs and their owners,” said organiser Dave Daly. “This year’s event will feature a list of talent shows such as Waggiest Tail, the new Running of the Pups, Doggy Got Talent and Doggy Fashions on the Field. And The Next Top K9 Model, of course.” Woofstock will run from 9am to 2pm and there will be food and drinks on sale, competitions, giveaways and entertainment throughout the event. For more information on Woofstock (Eumundi) see www.woofstock.com.au

Bruce Glen, The Gentleman Magician, has written one of his signature ‘storytelling magic shows for grown-ups’ especially for Noosa Arts Theatre, with performances on May 3 at 1pm and 7.30pm.
Rose Barry with one of her paintings
Art on show at U3A U3A Noosa has a vibrant art faculty and now visitors can enjoy a double exhibition featuring scenes inspired by the beauty of our world both above the ground and deep below the sea. Artist Rose Barry and husband Eugene have lived in the Northern Territory and other inland regions of Australia. After moving to Noosa, Rose adapted her art to reflect the green of the Coast - so different from the inland shades of red. Also showing at U3A House is an exhibition of Jan Brown’s
underwater photographic art. Jan has mastered the practicalities of breathing underwater and is never happier than travelling to exotic reefs and depths, capturing moments of the underwater world. She has a special love for the people and islands of Indonesia and U3A members have marvelled at her underwater photographs which often seem too incredibly beautiful to be true. The exhibition and sale of work is open to the public from 9am, Monday to Friday, at U3A House, 64 Poinciana Ave, Tewantin. For more information call 5440 5500.
Wellbeing
Bruce Glen’s shows have received wonderful reviews. He has performed at the Edinburgh and Adelaide Fringe festivals. He had sell out shows at the Edinburgh International Magic Festival and the London headquarters of The Magic Circle. On the Fringe of Reality features extraordinary magic - together with “tall tales and true” inspired by the charm and wonder of some of our greatest storytellers. A legendary Sunshine Coast con-man exposed; lost manuscripts from Wonderland; the hidden power of our minds revealed; Houdini’s feats recreated; enchanted finger rings; the impossible rendered possible… “Right from the start of Bruce Glen’s entertaining show “The Gentleman Magician”, you feel welcomed and put at ease by his genial, affable presence, impeccable manners and easy charm.” The Edinburgh

Having been opened for only three months, Geisha is already creating a stir in the local industry by offering a unique dining experience that is equally focussed on the customer’s experience as well as the food. From an iPad that helps you choose your meal, to an extensive knowledge of the origins of each dish, Geisha aims to make Japanese dining simple. A large menu is on offer with options available for the well-travelled to those who are trying Japanese fare for the first time, and each menu item is accompanied by a brief explanation of the ingredients so anyone can understand what they are ordering. To find out more about Geisha’s dishes, simply visit their Facebook page for regular updates on specials, plus interesting facts about the origin of Japanese dishes. 36 SPORT TODAY NRL WEEKLY REVIEW PETER MCGREGOR
2014 POINTS LADDER
A very good round of rugby league over the Easter weekend however, much controversy this time I must say again with the on-field and video referees. I don’t normally like to criticise the ref but they seem to over complicate things which on the surface appear easy to read. Is the pressure getting to them? Or are they just incompetent and have no understanding of the game?

The Titans will be looking for retribution
The on-field refs in my opinion need to take control and make decisions just like their counterparts in park footy. However, their decision-making processes seem to defy logic and understanding. I am sure the NRL will take the necessary action to ensure the best possible result for the players and fans alike but it will take time. The blokes in the middle are just confused like the rest of us but it does not help the angst out there being felt by many a tipster. Anyway, with that off my chest here are my tips this week. Don’t forget my disclaimer! On Friday night the Dragons take on the Roosters in the Anzac Day classic in Sydney. This should be a very entertaining game with both sides in form
and ready to entertain. I like the Roosters but don’t underestimate the Dragons. Roosters in a close one by 4. The second Anzac Day game should be a beauty in Brisbane between the Broncos and Rabbitohs. I am impressed with the Broncos and reckon they can take the Rabbitohs, especially at home. The defence of the Broncos of late has been exceptional and for that reason Broncos by 2. The third Anzac Day game will be very interesting with the underperforming Storm tackling a desperate Warriors in Melbourne. I am a bit concerned with the Storm and with the record the Warriors have in Melbourne then I will tip an upset. Warriors by 6. On Saturday the Sharks are
DAVID FALLA
at home to the Panthers and in this one I like the Panthers, just. The Sharks are improving with their key players coming back but the Panthers are gelling. Panthers by 6. Also on Saturday the very unlucky and disillusioned Cowboys host the electric Eels. The Eels are playing good footy but much to my better judgement I will the the Cowboys in a close one. Hopefully, the Cowboys by 2. The final Saturday night game is between the Bulldogs and Knights. This should be a very rough and tough affair but the Bulldogs have shown enough lately to hold out the Knights. Bulldogs by 10. On Sunday the Manly Sea Eagles tackle the Raiders and you just can’t back against the
AL DOBLO
MARK MURPHY
Sea Eagles. They just know how to win and have the experience to hang in there. The Raiders were very good at home against Melbourne but away they are a bit suspect. Manly by 12. The other Sunday match should be interesting when the Tigers host the Titans. The Titans will be looking for retribution but for me after the win against the Eels last weekend I think the Tigers will have too many guns for the game but unimagitive Titans. Tigers by 8. Well, there they are the tips for this weekend. Good tipping and may your team get up and win and improve your standing on the ladder. ‘Remember, Rugby League football, the greatest game of all.’

What a weekend coming up for the Fiona Winter Realty/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers. Not only do we celebrate
and reflect on those who served our country proudly, but the two oldest and fieriest Sunshine Coast teams will battle it out at Fishermans Road on Saturday. Yep, it’s Noosa v Maroochydore, both unbeaten sitting second and third respectively, both with plenty of new additions and, of course, as always much pride to play for. Adding even more spice to the occasion is ex-Noosa Cap-
tain Coach Brett Maloney, who now leads the Maroochy chargers. The non-playing respected senior coach has recruited heavily over the pre-season and will be looking to avenge the loss Maroochydore had in its only game with the Tigers in 2013. Noosa should be strengthened by the return of club champions Riley Buntain and Caleb Isles, the talented youngster Jai
Rogers and Vice Captain David Welch for this massive Anzac weekend clash. An Anzac will toss the coin and the bugler is in place for a game not to be missed. An invitation for all Noosa past players has been issued from Maroochy’s past players to join them at noon for complimentary nibbles and drinks and then settle in for the big game. Don’t miss it! Go Tigers!

Offshore fishing a corker JACK MANGROVE April is and always has been a great one for fishing offshore off Noosa, and with the quality of fish coming through at the moment, it’s not hard to see why! The reef fish have been in large schools lately, with burley really bringing out the best in them! Using things like crushed up pilchards mixed with burley pellets makes a massive difference to your catch rate, as the large numbers of baitfish feed on this burley, which in turn attracts bigger fish right up to the back of your boat! Another place that has been fishing extremely well at the moment is the rocks just off Noosa National Park. From these cliffs and ledges, anglers have been catching some nice long tail tuna as well as Spanish and spotted mackerel. Whilst it’s a pretty long walk all the way out to these rocks, it’s definitely worth it with the quality of fish getting caught there! In the Noosa River, trevally and tailor have been smashing up schools of baitfish around the back of Noosa Sound and right around towards Woods Bay during the early mornings. Some of the best lures for these feisty fish include Zerek Poppers and the every faithful River 2 Sea bubble pop! Another fish that’s been fishing well with surface lures has been whiting. These tasty fish are in good numbers at the moment around the Frying Pan region located right next to the River Mouth. If you’re after a bit more info about fishing the Noosa River, or just want to win some awesome prizes including boats and kayaks, simply visit www. fishingnoosa.com.au where you’ll find an entry form to the Noosa River to Reef Family Fishing Classic. This family friendly comp see’s fisherman from around Australia battle it out for some great prizes and all the fun that goes with it.

Div 2 was won by Bob Linaker (Tweed Heads) and John Olsen (Noosa) runner-up. The Golf Doubles Level Play was won convincingly by Niven Gugich and Brian Rudd (Noosa). Locals shine in tough race Three local teams finished on the podium at the Kathmandu Adventure Race in the Premier ‘Mixed’ & ‘Female’ categories. The race was held in the forests and bushland surrounding
Wild Horse Mountain, providing the perfect backdrop for the physical challenges of the event.
Designed for teams of two, the races are billed as being fun, fast and furious with teams having to change between three core dis-
ciplines several times during the event. With three mountain biking stages, two running stages, kayaking and navigation, the event lived up to expectations. Local Noosa pro Kim Beckinsale finished comfortably with a first place category win with her
Mountain Designs team-mate, Gary Sutherland. Team Bike On with Justin & Tracey Wyatt finished in third place. Jan Leverton from Tri Adventure took out a stunning victory with her team-mate Kelsey Harvey to win the ‘Female’ category.
No sweet treats for Lions Most of the Noosa Lions were kept in the den over the Easter weekend with sightings of a large white rabbit around the fields. However, ever eager to get a game of football, the Over 35 Whites and the Fourths took to the field on Thursday evening. A new side this year, the Over 35 White team is still getting to know each other, but started
strongly, maintaining possession and driving forward into the red zone. The side went to a two-nil lead with Caloundra getting one back early in the second half. Edging ahead again with a third goal Noosa looked to have their first three pointer of the year in the bag with goals to Chris Penny, Brett Morgan and Mario Agostino. Noosa kept up the pressure with some great runs by Chris Penny and Mario Agostino who found that he had the speed of an O35 forward along the side line.

through the mid field the visitors went out to a three zip lead. A good defensive effort from third generation motor mogul Adam Madill and his offsiders stemmed the flow and Noosa gradually worked itself back in the game. Two goals form Tavish Patterson lead to a big last minute push. It looked to be heading for a 3-all draw when fancy-footed RACV Resort staffer John Whiting struck in the dying moments, only to be deprived by the woodwork: Caloundra 3 - Noosa 2.
NOOSA HEADS BOWLS CLUB Although it’s more than a month away, entries are already rolling in for the Laguna Mixed Medley event set down for Thursday, June 5. If your year of birth starts with 195? then you probably have an excuse. With its relative youth Caloundra finished strongly to tie the match up at 3-all despite some determined efforts by captain-coach and goalie Mark ‘Pommie’ Harrison. COOROY BOWLS CLUB What a glorious week for bowls! The Seafood Medley held on Saturday was a great success with a good roll up of dedicated players. The five-person teams played a selection of singles, pairs, triples and fours and finished with a supper of fish and chips. The overall winners were G Green, D Allisone, B Haack, K Caddell and Y Pattinson. A big “thank you” needs to go to the organisers and volunteers. The winners in the Tuesday Jackpot pairs were C Nadler and D Allisone. Runners up were R Butler and B Revie. The teams shifted slightly after Thursday night’s High Rollers challenge. The Eumundi Boys remain in the lead with JACs coming second. Only two teams, JeLS and Bushrangers are in third place now. Each week sees the leader board ebb and flow. With only about six rounds to go things could change dramatically.

BETWEEN THE FLAGS RON LANE
To the local lifesavers it was the Easter break that can only be described as perfect: great weather, very safe surfing conditions and big well behaved crowds. At Noosa three people were rescued in the river mouth on Saturday afternoon. In the first incident two young boys were brought in on rescue boards and later in the day, one was rescued by the IRB patrol. It was the same old story - inexperienced boys bathing in the unpatrolled river mouth. Noosa Main Beach was packed and it was Noosa at its best. Sunshine was similar with big crowds and good conditions. At Sunshine, Noosa and Peregian supporter club mangers expressed their thanks for the support that visitors gave over their clubs over Easter. At Peregian two bathers required patrol assistance and a few quite well-chosen words of advice enabled them to get themselves on to dry sand. Once again the Peregian Club took their juniors on their annual trip to Stradbroke Island where they visit the local surf club. This trip is now a club tradition and this year 17 members made the pilgrimage, one which has been ongoing for 12 years. “This trip has many benefits,” said Rod Witham, Youth Development Officer. “Straddie is considered to be one of the only remaining traditional surf clubs in Australia with its dormitories and club house duties. It gives the juniors an idea of what lifesaving was all about in the years past. We stay for a week and it’s a real learning experience.” During the week the Peregian juniors were called upon to attend a suspected spinal injury. As it was mid-week the beach was under control of the Lifeguards and they were really impressed by the performance of the juniors. Their response time to the call was fast and there was no hesitation in their work. It does not matter how much time you spend training if you can’t remain calm in a time of trouble all will be lost. With the patrol season for the lifesavers coming to the end winter training is now being planned. At Noosa the IRB training is still ongoing and the start of the IRB racing season is just weeks away. For Peregian their main winter training will be surf swims and board racing and Sunshine will also put emphases on IRB work.
