A DECISION to block plans for a telecommunications tower at Hamlyn Heights shows that council is listening to ratepayers, according to Cr Eddy Kontelj. The ward representative said Telstra’s bid to build the 35-metre tower at Hamlyn Park Reserve attracted 630 objections. Councillors decided this week against granting the telecommunications provider a lease to use council’s land for the structure in the latest twist in an ongoing battle between residents and Telstra. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in

December rejected objections to the tower over public health concerns about electro-magnetic radiation. Tribunal deputy president Mark Dwyer said second-guessing authorities regulating health issues was not VCAT’s role. “VCAT is not a forum for addressing all issues of social or community concern, nor is it an investigative body,’’ he said in the ruling. Telstra appeared to have won the battle but Cr Kontelj said council had since taken into ac-

Calls grow for state to clear up hospital deal By NOEL MURPHY SHADOW Health Minister Gavin Jennings and Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association have backed calls for an Ombudsman inquiry into a secret $50 million deal between the State Government and private operator Epworth Hospital. Bellarine MP and former Barwon Health chair Lisa Neville last week demanded the Ombudsman probe, declaring “something stinks” about the deal for Epworth’s proposed Waurn Ponds training hospital to accommodate the Government’s promised public health care services for the suburb. The Government halted an open tender process for a public hospital

at Waurn Ponds before the Epworth arrangement was revealed. Mr Jennings said Geelong had been “promised a public hospital” but was “shortchanged by Denis Napthine”. “Under the public proposal the community knew what they were going to get but under this proposal no one knows what is on the cards because the deal has been shrouded in secrecy,” Mr Jennings said. Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association chief Alison Verhoeven told the Independent the deal should stand up to public scrutiny. “Governments are increasingly looking at options for contracting the provision of public hospital and healthcare services to private provid-

ers. However, the quality, safety and affordability of services must not be compromised by these arrangements, and taxpayer dollars must be well spent,” Ms Verhoeven said. “Governments committed to getting value for money in their contracting arrangements with the private sector should also commit to open and transparent tender processes which stand up to public scrutiny.” Epworth, running two years behind with its $277 million Waurn Ponds hospital, last week refused to answer questions submitted by the Independent, citing grounds it was an applicant in the tender process. However, it has since issued two lengthy media statements, citing a

starting date for work and the appointment of a new chief executive officer, Geelong’s Damian Armour. The Government’s Epworth deal involves 32 public beds, same-day surgery theatres, chemotherapy and renal dialysis services. The arrangement pushed aside St John of God, which recently completed a $65 million hospital expansion in Geelong. A second private hospital was also sidelined. Health Minister David Davis, a trenchant critic of previous government health spending, denied any deal was done with Epworth. He told the Independent “a strict process” was in place regarding the exclusive negotiation process.

Phoenix rises AN UNNAMED public space in Newtown will be known as Phoenix Reserve, Geelong councillor Stretch Kontelj has announced. He said the reserve would be named after a former Phoenix Wool Scouring Works, which operated in the area from the end of World War I to the 1970s.

Flights to Brisbane via Sydney might remain possible and Jetstar will offer an additional daily Sydney flight from Avalon but the end of April will mark another unwanted cut for the airport’s chief tenant. Jetstar operations at Avalon were set to cease until State Government, the airline Jetstar and Avalon owner

Avalon and state and federal governments have maintained an optimistic face in recent weeks with announcements of an impending Chinese international carrier, Hainan, and new general aviation operations. The announcements, which eclipsed media coverage of 300 Qantas and Forstaff maintenance workers exiting Avalon, failed to prevent the airport, Jetstar and Qantas still

drawing negative attention on multiple fronts. This week Avalon was slammed over a controversial Melbourne billboard slogan and Facebook banner delcaring, ‘Fly domestic without having one’. Qantas was forced to turn around three flights to Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Sydney after faults were detected. Jetstar said its overall number of services from Avalon would remain unchanged at up to 35 departures weekly.

Jetstar Australia and New Zealand chief executive officer David Hall last month said the decision to cut the loss-making Brisbane service was made in consultation with Avalon Airport management. The extra Sydney flight would help provide a “better spread of services” throughout the day and would offer more convenient connections to Brisbane. The Independent was unable to contact Avalon chief Justin Giddings for comment.

Jap spies’ Danger mission revealed By NOEL MURPHY AS THOUSANDS gather at Torquay’s Point Danger for its Anzac Day Dawn Service few might be aware a World War II Japanese scout plane flew overhead in summer 1942. The plane launched from a submarine near King Island two hours before dawn on 26 February, manned by Nobuo Fujita and Shoji Okuda en route to Melbourne. They headed for Cape Otway and followed the coast, crossing the Bellarine Peninsula from Torquay toward Point Lonsdale and Portarlington. Fujita, a warrant flying officer, struck banks of cloud as he continued along the west coast of Port Phillip Bay and became uncertain of his position. He and Okuda eventually dropped below the clouds to about 300 metres

them but the battery failed to open fire as the officer in charge sought permission from his superiors. Fujita and Okuda hightailed out of the place, heading out toward the bay. Flying as low as 300 metres they spied Melbourne’s city centre, its docks at the mouth of the Yarra River - and ships under repair - as well as the rooftops of the suburbs, open countryside and livestock. The pair followed the bay coastline south over St Kilda, Brighton, Sandringham and Frankston, noting 19 ships and boats including six warships, a light cruiser and five destroyers. Crossing the coast at Dromana they flew out over Bass Strait toward King Island’s Cape Wickham where the Japanese submarine awaited nearby.

GEELONG’S Norm Lane paid the ultimate price in the service of his country. But even residents of the suburb named after him, Norlane, would be unaware of the horrors he endured as a prisoner of war in Changi and as a slave on the Burma-Thai railway. But Geelong RSL wants to change all that with a push to create a memorial to ensure everlasting recognition of his sacrifice. Norman John Lane died from pneumonia at 8.15am on 20 September 1943 after being forced to work 12-hour days on a rail line that was credited with a death for every sleeper laid. He was fed a bowl of rice a day but only when it suited his Japanese captors. A powerful, robust man when he enlisted in July 1940, he was reduced to half his body weight when he died. Geelong RSL vice-president Brian Bunn wants the memorial up in time to commemorate Mr Lane’s anniversary, not by the swiftness of a bullet but after suffering until his body could no longer meet the challenge. “It’s going to happen,” Mr Dunn said. “We’re pushing for it, a lot of

The Japanese captured the pair after the fall of Singapore in February 1942. Mr Boyle remained close to Mr Lane, watching him and hundreds of other captured soldiers deteriorate while working in the death camps. “Norm was regarded by his officers as being dependable and conscientious and also highly regarded by all other members of

his unit. He was a fine soldier and a gentleman,’’ Boyle wrote to the former Shire of Corio. Mr Boyle stayed with Mr Lane until the end. “The day before he died I carried him out from a hospital ward to the latrines - in my arms because he was too weak to walk.” Mr Boyle wrote in his diary on 20 September 1943: “Railway apparently finished - now working on road … death rate very high, 12 English and four Australians died last night. Norm Lane died this morning from cardiac berri berri”. Ward councillor Kylie Fisher said an application for the memorial’s funding had been submitted and council was working with Mr Lane’s daughter in New South Wales to ensure she was happy with the memorial and its site. “Council is very supportive of this. It’s a great project and it’s important that people know the history behind the name,” Cr Fisher said. Member for Lara John Eren said locals and visitors should be aware of the Norlane name’s significance. Their comments echo Mr Boyle, who wrote: “I hope that his story will be remembered by all those in the Norlane area. He was a fine man and a fine soldier.” 1125688-PB12-14

Local heroes typified Anzac spirit ‘We are the ragtime army, The A-N-Z-A-C, We cannot shoot, we won’t salute, What bloody good are we? And when we get to Berlin The Kaiser he will say, Hoch, hoch, mein Gott, What an awful bloody lot, Are the A-N-Z-A-C.’ THIS marching song from World War I typified the larrikin spirit of Anzacs such as two special Geelong figures who volunteered to serve overseas only to find themselves in a maelstrom of blood and bullets at Gallipoli. Both demonstrated the indomitable spirit associated with Anzac Day; the bravery, busi-

ness-like soldiering and a willingness to challenge the enemy and superiors alike. One was Albert Jacka, Geelong’s greatest war hero, who might have won multiple Victoria Crosses and been promoted far higher than captain had he not rubbed his superiors the wrong way. Born outside Winchelsea, Jacka was the first Australian to win the Victoria Cross. His bravery at Gallipoli became a byword for courage under fire. Aged 22 he single-handedly killed seven Turks in a trench conflict, shooting five and bayonetting two. He went on to become a recruiting poster figure, described as “the symbol of the spirit of the Anzacs”. The other soldier was lesser

known but a tough, witty Anzac and a great survivor. Roy Longmore, a bombardier from Bannockburn who spent most of his war years underground digging tunnels as close as possible to Turkish trenches, was the last Victorian Anzac veteran of WWI. He died aged 107 in 2001. After Gallipoli he went to France, was wounded at Pozieres in 1916 but stayed on duty. Two years later he was wounded for a second time but stayed on duty again. He was promoted to corporal after the first injury and to lance sergeant after the second. “It did not hurt much, just a couple of bullets through both my arms and legs,” he said later.

FORMER Geelong Cats favourite Wayne Closter spilled blood while serving in Vietnam. But it was on a football field rather than a war zone. Closter played 191 games, missing out on the 200-match milestone due to national service commitments in Vietnam. He played in many classic games for Geelong yet a lasting memory is contesting a 1969 competition involving six teams amid stifling heat in coastal Vung Tau, South Vietnam. The Highton resident this week remembered the series as keenly contested with a touch of brutality. His team played in Geelong colours after the football club sent over a set of guernseys to help out the troops. Closter was blitzing the opposition on the way to the final, kicking 12 goals in the semi-final of the 14-a-side competition. The opposition soon realised the only way to beat the Australian Advance Ordinance team was to stop the Geelong man. Butt out, Cats to tell local smokers GEELONG’S smoking problem has roped the city’s footy team into a campaign highlighting bans on smokers at outdoor sport venues. Health Minister David Davis said 20 per cent of Geelong adults still smoked, compared to the state average of 13.3 per cent.

The two-year partnership between the Cats, Quit Victoria and State Government’s Health Together Victoria initiative would encourage local smokers to butt out for good, Mr Davis said. The partnership would “provide more support� to stop smoking, he said.

“New laws banning smoking at public outdoor playgrounds, skate parks, swimming pool complexes and sporting venues during underage sporting events came into force on April 1.� Cats chief Brian Cook said the club was “committed� to helping Geelong become healthier.

AN UPGRADED airfield at Lethbridge is paving the way for a new business precinct on the outskirts of Geelong linking agribusiness, tourism and aviation. New runways, an industrial park with more than a dozen new aviation-related outlets, flying classes and flight services have been transforming Lethbridge Airpark and paving the way for a raft of new enterprises. Freeway terror repeat for Lara By NOEL MURPHY MARCIA and Glen Wood are thanking their lucky stars they’re alive after a near-miss with a car driving the wrong way on the Princes Fwy at Lara. The incident, about 9.30pm Sunday, was the latest wrong-way incident on the freeway, which police have said occur almost weekly. Five people died at Lara in December 2012 when a woman driving west on the wrong side of the road smashed into a car despite other motorists’ frantic calls to 000. Ms Wood said she and her husband were in the middle lane on their way to Lorne when they saw “quite a few brake lights” in the distance “then a set of bright white ones”. “It took a few moments to re-

alise it was a car heading toward us on the wrong side of the freeway. “It was travelling in the right hand lane. Glen swerved into the left lane to avoid a head-on. “I’m not sure he had a lot of time to see if the lane was empty. Thankfully it was.” Ms Wood was unsure what happened to the other car afterward. “We thought there may have been an accident because the traffic had slowed down but all was okay and everyone continued to drive on.” The near-miss was one of several alarming traffic incidents over the Easter weekend. A woman was arrested at Geelong after a chase from Camperdown involving multiple police units and helicopters. The

woman, wanted in relation to an attempted burglary in Melbourne, was allegedly armed with a machete when she rammed a police car before her arrest. Police also impounded four cars over speeding offences, including an 18-year-old Corio man licensed since 7 April intercepted travelling at 145km/h on Melbourne Rd, North Geelong. Another driver was caught at 116km/h at North Shore, while third was travelling at 127km/h in a 60km/h zone at Breakwater. State Highway Patrol West Sergeant Mick Pandik said the speeds involved were extremely dangerous. “These drivers show no regard for their passengers or anyone else on the road. “If those drivers make one mistake at that speed it’s going to be their last.”

Uni team abuzz over 2D material By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AN INNOCUOUS-looking piece of film like flimsy, transparent carbon paper has the science world abuzz. Graphene is a form of carbon now acknowledged as the thinnest, strongest, truly two-dimensional material yet discovered. Also believed to be the most electronically-conductive material known to humankind, graphene’s features have researchers the world over searching for uses since its discoverers won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. A Deakin University team is working in collaboration with China’s Qingdao University on ways to bind graphene to other

materials to harness its electronic conductivity. Deakin team member Professor Colin Barrow marvelled at the material. “Once separated, the graphene sheets can be combined back together to make more a flexible structure and use them in different applications, such as in sensors and detectors for medical devices,” he explained. “There’s a lot of interest in using graphene in electronic or solar devices because it can detect and measure anything. “Because it’s only a single molecule thick it can actually be used in nano-devices. For instance, a tiny device implanted in

the body could give regular readings on glucose levels, instead of taking blood samples all the time and having them analysed.” Prof Barrow said graphene could also be developed into stretchable displays, flexible electronics, photovoltaics and organic light-emitting diodes. “We’re working with our collaborators in China to set up a pilot plant because we have a couple of methods where we think we might get low-cost commercial production. It is easy enough to make small quantities but we don’t yet have a process scaled to manufacturing size at reasonable cost to allow it be used commercially.”

New eyes on crime in central city NEW surveillance cameras are watching for crime in central Geelong. Geelong’s council has used a $110,000 grant from the Department of Justice to install six more of the cameras to its central city network. Central Geelong Taskforce chair and councillor Michelle Heagney said the area now had 38 cameras after beginning with six cameras in 2004.

“We now have better coverage and better images,” she said. “And it’s thanks to these cameras that the police have not only been able to identify and prosecute offenders, but intervene and prevent crimes before they happen.” Cr Heagney said the expansion of the camera network would make people feel safer on the streets.

They have demonstrated they are genuinely in need of protection and surely we should aid the recovery from the traumas they have suffered by allowing family members to join them here. Learning begins at home AS THE school year spills into its second term, parents have an opportunity to establish new routines and expectations for children’s learning. Self-driven students are more successful because for them learning is enjoyable and rewarding. This is more likely to happen in a home environment with regular discussions about the focus of students’ learning. Parents should not just ask, “Do you have any homework?”, to which the reply is invariably, “No, I did all of my work at school”. Continued learning outside school time can be enabled by questions such as, “What text are you reading in English?”, or, “Tell me about the main characters and narrative overview of that text”. Parents should ask to read their students’ mostrecent creative pieces or to see recently completed maths assessments. Even beginning the discussion with, “Tell me about your day; what did you do in each of your classes?” is likely to elicit more than a monosyllabic answer. If our younger generations are to enjoy future prosperity on the back of gainful employment, they must prepare to find their way in a competitive and knowledge-based economy in which jobs are not as forthcoming as in our industrial past. Theatre of the Winged Unicorn’s Elaine Mitchell recalled the fun her group had with their know-itall audience last time they put on an Agatha Christie performance. “We did a survey and none of them were right. Even the people who were adamant they knew who did it (the murder) were quite wrong so we took them to task with that,” Mitchell laughed. The group will perform Agatha Christie’s Spider’s Web at local Ceres Hall during April and May as well as two special performances at Winchelsea’s Barwon Park Mansion this Saturday and Sunday. Afternoon tea in the shows’ breaks will give the audience time to speculate ‘whodunnit’. The plot of Spider’s Web follows Clarissa Hailsham-Brown as she stumbles on the dead body of a man she saw alive earlier in the day. She persuades a group of three friends to help remove the body from her street but a police inspector finds out and ends up interviewing them. Four different stories emerge from the interviews and the tale begins to twist. The Winged Unicorn’s cast of 11 features Jocelyn Mackay, Miriam Wood, Tony Wright, Hannah Verspaandonk, Ben Mitchell, Alard Pett, Marylin Nash and Heather Dempsey. “Agatha Christie is still very very popular - due to television of course,” Mitchell said. “It’s an old play but we’re doing it stylishly and dressing in 1950s style.” Barwon Park was a suitable fit since the storyline took place in a country mansion, Mitchell explained. > 155g butter > 1/2 cup caster sugar > 1/4 cup cocoa > 125g choc chip biscuits crushed > 1 cup walnuts or pecans chopped > 125g dark chocolate chopped > 1 egg

INGREDIENTS

Line the base and sides of square tin with aluminium foil. Melt butter 125g and sugar in pan. Stir in biscuits, nuts crushed and cocoa and then remove from heat and add egg. In square tin empty mixture and put in fridge. Put chopped chocolate and remaining butter in bowl and melt. Spread mixture over the slice and return to fridge for 1 hour. Prep time 25 minutes + refrigeration. Total cook time 5 minutes. Makes about 30.

uled for October and last month sang under the direction of famed Welsh conductor Ilid Anne Jones. The 36-member choir has been singing for 16 years after being founded to help Portarlington’s National Celtic Festival fly the Welsh musical flag. “We raise all our own funds to go on our tours, with lots of cake stalls, trivia night and of course concerts - we raised $80,000 for the three week tour of Wales,” John explained. “But we also support lots of community events, such as Pako Festa and many Celtic and other music festivals. “It is hard work raising the funds and keeping the choir active and recruiting new

members, but it’s a lot of fun and we get to go places we otherwise wouldn’t.” The choir will present a Mother’s Day concert from 2.30pm 11 May at Barwon Park Manor, Winchelsea. The varied Musical Treats for Mothers program will feature guest artist Geelong flautist Sian Williams. Admission includes a pre-concert visit to the Manor and a “delicious” afternoon tea. The Hard-Ons were underdogs personified and they had a huge go,” Ahn said. “Unburdened by any sense of prefabricated style nor scene-specific sound, the teenaged HardOns let loose upon the bewildered and unsuspecting underground music scene with their previously unthinkable mix of punk, metal, garage, thrash and bubble-gum pop.” Ahn said the band’s shows were still “wildly unpredictable

action-packed affairs” three decades later. The national anniversary tour would include original member Keish de Silva, making the band a four-piece instead of its usual on stage arrangement as a trio. Original members Peter ‘Blackie’ Black and Ray would also play, alongside de Silva’s replacement, Murray Ruse. Ahn said the band was looking forward to its first “and last” national tour since the Hard-Ons broke up in 1994, eventually reforming in 1997. The tour arrives at The Wool Exchange on 13 June.

ALTERNATIVE Australian punk rock band Hard-Ons will mark its 30th anniversary with a Geelong gig in June. The group had a strong following in Geelong’s underground rock scene of the late ’80s and ’90s, playing to sweaty crowds at venues such as The Barwon Club. The multicultural Sydney band put on its first show in July 1984, with the members then still in their teens. Stephen Ahn, whose brother Ray is the band’s bassist, said the mix of members with Croatian, Sri Lankan and Korean backgrounds carved a niche playing at “impossible volume and velocity”.

NOBODY can ever thank their mother enough for all the sacrifices she has made but for at least once a year some of her devotion can be repaid with a day to remember at Capri Receptions. Angelo Traficante, the manager of one of the best-known reception venues in the region, says Mother’s Day is one of those occasions when families gathered as one to celebrate all the good things in life and to honour and spoil mums. “There’s nothing better than sitting together in good company

with good food in a relaxed atmosphere,” he says. Cool Heat will provide easylistening entertainment throughout the afternoon at Capri Receptions, with diners encouraged to take to the dance floor. “We owe our mothers so much, we can never thank them enough, but at least on this day we can show our appreciation with no dishes to be done, no food to prepare,” Angelo says. “Mums never seem to relax until everybody is seated and eating, so how easy is this? They

get shown to their table and have nothing to do after they unfold their napkin.” Capri has been catering for Mother’s Day functions for more than 20 years, becoming an annual must-do event for many patrons. “Guests know what they’re getting when they visit us - we’re family friendly,’’ Angelo says. “We hope that when families leave our centre they will carry with them lasting memories of a special day with their mother.”

Fanning wins third Bells title in all-Aussie final AUSSIE surf hero Mick Fanning took out the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach championship ahead of mate Taj Burrow in a nerve-wracking final at Winkipop on Wednesday. The triple world champion - and now triple Bells winner - won with a score of 16.83 from rides of 8.83 and 8.00 ahead of Burrow’s 13.46, which included a mighty 9.63. A desperate paddle battle for priority just minutes from the siren saw Fanning holding the ascendancy but with Burrow looking anxiously for a 7.20 ride the pressure kicked in and the pair fluffed their final waves. With the seconds ticking away, Fanning bided his time and priority as Burrow chased but failed to capitalise on his final waves. Fanning said he was overwhelmed to join ranks with triple Bells greats including Michael

Peterson, Sunny Garcia and Joel Parkinson. He described the last nine minutes of his battle with Burrow as nerve-wracking. “It feels amazing,” Fanning said. “It was a tough final. Taj went crazy on that one and I was so nervous the last nine minutes and made a few mistakes.” Fanning said he “tried to do the old Thorpedo and get the legs kicking” during the paddle fight. The third-round world title win released the “pressure a little bit” after a less-than-inspiring performance at Margaret River he said. “After a kick up the bum at Margies it was a good time to reset. I put a lot of hard work in for this event and it paid off.” Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won the women’s event ahead of Tyler Wright in a back-to-back victory that she described as a great start to the world-title season.

Keep plastic bags out of your recycling bin For safety reasons, staff at the recycling facility will not open plastic bags, no matter what the contents are. So anything in plastic bags will end up in landfill. Empty plastic bags can also get caught in the conveyor belts, jam spinning wheels and bring the entire sorting process to a halt. Trevally took soft plastics in and around Queenscliff’s cut where the fishing was been an hour either side of high tide. Patches of rough weather sent gummy sharks and quality snapper on the bite, mainly after dark. The area from Point Wilson to the quarries hosted the best snapper fishing, while Wilson Spit was a hotspot for gummies. James Johnson fished the outer-harbour spoil grounds off Hermsley with soft plastics for a mixed bag of flathead to 900g and snapper to 4.6kg. Large amounts of baitfish attracted schools of salmon in areas such as Alcoa Pier, Leopold’s spoil grounds and the outer edge of the Clifton Springs mussel lease. Small metal lures and soft plastics cast into the surface action worked well. The Barwon River estuary produced mulloway, mostly small but some around 6kg. Lure anglers took the most fish, particularly when using vibes, plastics or deep-diving minnows. Lake Bullen Merri should be worth fishing this weekend with Powerbait fished on a running sinker, while saltwater anglers should chase big snapper in the outer-harbour after dark. ANGLERS reported some great captures over the Easter break. Freshwater reports dominated, with Moorabool Reservoir producing four redfin to 2.2kg for Troy Anderson. He used small freshwater yabbies for bait, although another angler nearby caught a similar number of fish on scrub worms. Lake Bullen Merri remained consistent for trout and salmon. Fish around 2kg were taken on Powerbait and mudeye, with the best fishing in the mornings for anglers such as Asi Osmic. Murray cod expert Ross Virt took the family to the Loddon River, where his kids, Calista and Marquis, both landed 40cm yellowbelly on lure along with a 60cm cod. Ross eventually redeemed himself with a 60cm-plus cod on fly. Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree was ideal for anglers chasing a comfortable location to chase trout. Mudeyes fished shallow under floats worked, with the middle of the day hosting the best action. West Barwon Reservoir yielded few reports, although Guy Welsh fished the main wall with lures to land a pair of trout just over 1.5kg each. Big carp were caught around the Queen’s Park area of the Barwon River. Corn and bread were the best baits, while berley used with unweighted baits also helped. Salmon numbers increased along the coast between Fairhaven and Apollo Bay. Lure was the best method, with the rock platforms out-fishing the beaches. Squid were taken in good numbers from the shallow grass beds along the Bellarine Peninsula. Small jigs worked best.

GEELONG coach Chris Scott could well have been listening to tennis great Roger Federer as he prepared this week for Sunday’s top of the ladder clash against Port Adelaide. “I fear no one but I respect everyone,” said the Swiss, who held the world-number-one tag for 302 weeks. Scott was preaching from the same guide book as the tennis ace while the Cats fine-tuned for the twilight fixture at Adelaide Oval. “We have a very healthy respect for (Port coach) Ken (Hinkley) being a Geelong person,” Scott said. That respect comes from Hinkley playing 121 games for the Cats and then becoming part of the coaching staff that helped rebuild Geelong as a force in the competition. Scott was unsurprised Port had made such a solid start to the competition. “They have some unbelievable players and have had for some time,” he said. “They are a pretty formidable group of players.” Scott also believed that Geelong had an inbuilt confidence at the moment. A bit like the Swiss master: fearing nobody but respecting everybody. Hinkley said on his club’s website that his young squad would encounter some bumps along the way. “I can tell our supporters one thing - that I will work my butt off to make sure that this club and our coaching staff really come together and make sure that we’re doing everything we can to ensure that we return Port Adelaide to where it should be - a very successful footy club,” said Hinkley, assistant coach for the Cats between 2004 and 2009. The Cats, the only unbeaten side after five rounds, come into the game on a high after beating Hawthorn on Easter Monday, while Port showed its mettle in a 14-point arm wrestle on a road-trip to West Coast. When the sides last met in the second semi-final the Cats brought an end to the South Australians’ season with a 16-point win at the MCG.
