Shown where it hurts By CHARLENE MACAULAY EMERGENCY department figures at Footscray’s Western Hospital are improving but still fall below many State Government targets. The Victorian Health Services Performance Report for the December 2013 quarter shows the hospital’s emergency department failed to treat its category two patients within the State Government benchmarks for the second consecutive quarter, with 79 per cent of patients treated within 10 minutes. The State Government target is 80 per cent. Category two patients are people suffering from a critical illness or very severe pain, such as chest pain. Meanwhile, 84.4 per cent of ambulance transfers were completed within 40 minutes - short of the 90 per cent target - and 52 per cent of emergency department patients are treated within four hours, significantly below the benchmark of 75 per cent. The elective surgery list remained relatively stable, with 1967 people on the waiting list. A total 9320 patients presented

to Western Hospital’s emergency department in the three months to the end of December. From that, 5012 patients were admitted, up from 4937 in the previous quarter. Western Health CEO Alex Cockram welcomed the results. Assoc Prof Cockram said she was particularly pleased to see that elective surgery admissions for the quarter also exceeded the set target. “Western Health has received further elective surgery funding for patients to be treated between February and June 2014, which will enable us to treat more patients who are awaiting elective surgery,” she said. “It is also worth noting that the hospital initiated postponement rate was well below the state-wide benchmark of eight per cent, at 5.9 per cent for the quarter.” Assoc Prof Cockram said time spent on bypass had decreased, while emergency care figures showed an improvement in meeting the clinically recommended triage times for category one to five emergency patients.

Police seek knife bandit POLICE are appealing for public assistance following an attempted armed robbery at a postal outlet in West Footscray earlier this month. A man entered the store on Sunshine Rd about 5pm on Thursday 3 April holding a knife and a plastic bag. He then approached the store manager and made a demand for cash, but the staff member refused to comply and activated an alarm. The offender then left the store without any money and ran east to-

New play for Yarraville A NEW playground is coming to Yarraville. Health insurance provider Medibank has approached Maribyrnong City Council with plans and a $100,000 budget to build a playground at McNish Reserve as part of its Generation Better campaign. The new playground, which will be installed in July, will feature in a 15-second commercial for the Medibank Generation Better campaign upon completion. Medibank looked at a range of sites across the municipality before settling on McNish Reserve due to its proximity to inner Melbourne and the Clare Court Children’s Hub, the high concentration of young families in the area and the community garden under construction nearby. Medibank will fund the entire playground, and Maribyrnong City Council will be in charge of ongoing maintenance once the project is complete. - CHARLENE MACAULAY

wards Aliwal St near the Tottenham Railway Station. No-one was injured during the incident and detectives from Altona North Embona Taskforce are now investigating. The man is described as being between 20-30 years of age and perceived to be of Caucasian appearance with short light brown hair. He has scabs on his cheeks and chin and red marks where it looked like he had picked or scratched his face.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a black hooded jumper with a white Everlast logo and dark coloured pants. Investigators have released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to in relation to the incident. Anyone with information about the incident or anyone who recognises the man is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppers.com.au

Pink ribbons for cancer fight By CHARLENE MACAULAY RENAE Vojtek is no stranger to battling cancer – and now she wants to help others. Ms Vojtek, who works at Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, aged 36. She is currently on holiday in Disneyland with her family to celebrate the end of her treatment. “I’ve worked at VU now for nearly 14 years, and I had a really good support network here,” she said. “I came to work right through chemotherapy and radiation and all that sort of stuff, so everybody got on board and supported me.” She was inspired to launch VU’s first Pink Ribbon Day last year after her colleagues asked what they could do to help her. That event raised $11,000 for the Cancer Council. This year, Ms Vojtek wants to go bigger and better - and she needs your help. VU will host its second annual Pink Day fund-raising event on 2

Renae Vojtek, second from left, with work friends and committee members all set for Pink Ribbon Day. 119180 October and is seeking donations of gifts or vouchers for raffles and auctions, food, non-alcoholic drinks, condiments, cutlery and napkins, pink balloons and decorative items. All money raised will be donated to BreastWest, a Western Health initiative set up in 2006 to raise money to improve patient care for breast cancer sufferers. BreastWest will use the money to

GELLIBRAND MP Tim Watts will host a forum next month to discuss proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act. Mr Watts is calling on residents of the West to come to the forum at the Maribyrnong town hall on Friday 2 May to go through the Federal Government’s proposed changes. Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane will be a guest speaker at the event. Mr Watts said the Federal Government was proposing to redefine racial vilification under the Racial Discrimination Act in response to the recent action against journalist Andrew Bolt. Mr Bolt was successfully sued in a class action brought by Pat Eatock on behalf of light-skinned Aboriginal people in the Federal Court in 2011 over comments he made in two newspaper articles. Under the changes, Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act, which makes it unlawful to offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate other people or a groups of people because of their race, colour or national or ethnic origin is scrapped. In its place is a new section that makes it unlawful to vilify or intimidate others on similar grounds, with vilify defined as inciting hatred and intimidate meaning causing fear of physical harm. “The breadth of these changes means that they’re really creating an open slather,” Mr Watts said. “As the Attorney-General said recently, everyone has the right to be a bigot, and these changes really give the green light to that kind of behaviour. “About 62 per cent of the residents of Gellibrand were born overseas – or their parents were. “I don’t want to see a return to the days of Hanson-ism in Australia, where people were exposed to some pretty ugly stuff.”

Green space push By CHARLENE MACAULAY FOOTSCRAY residents are keen to transform a parcel of land near the Western Hospital into green open space. The Hospitals Precinct Residents Representative Committee has called on Maribyrnong City Council to use council land between Southampton and Swan streets, along with an additional area within the south-east corner of the Southampton St car park, for a flexible communal open space.

The space is currently being used as a two-hour car parking area. The space in question abuts the new off-street car park that the council opened in December last year. The car park is situated on the council’s former depot and can only be accessed via Eleanor St. Residents from surrounding streets, together with staff from St John’s Primary School, held multiple meetings with the council to request an alternative access point when the plans were unveiled last

year, concerned about the heightened traffic conditions and safety for school children, but to no avail. Now, the group wants to ensure that they are fully involved and consulted on any future developments to the area. Resident Kathryn James said the site was already being used an access point to the Western Hospital and other Footscray landmarks, but that it also attracted anti-social behaviour such as illegal dumping, theft, hooning and drug use.

Ms James said transforming the site into a park with proper pedestrian links, much like the Royal Children’s Hospital, would revitalise the area. “You have the potential to significantly enhance the area,” Ms James told the council last week. The council will work with the Hospitals Precinct Residents Representative Committee to identify solutions for open space in the precinct. A report on the future of this land will go before the council next month.

THOUSANDS of people across Melbourne’s West paid tribute to our fallen service men and women last week as Dawn Services were held across the country. As the sun seeped through the morning sky, crowds descended upon memorial sites to remember those who have given their lives in service of the nation. They also remembered those who continue to be deployed in different parts of the globe. It was a time for all – young and old – to remember the Anzac spirit. The Dawn Services were followed by gunfire breakfasts where mates and their families gathered to enjoy a meal and drink together. Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

MARIBYRNONG City Council chief executive officer Vince Haining has handed in his resignation after less than four years in the job. Mr Haining, who will officially step down in July, made the surprise announcement last Thursday. “The timing of my decision to leave Maribyrnong is based on the coming together of two significant factors: the successful delivery of all the key outcomes needed to reposition the council’s organisation as an outstanding municipal authority, and the desire on my part to rebalance my priorities with a greater focus on health and family,” Mr Haining said. “Time with family is important to me. Health and wellbeing is also important. Therefore, I am going to take the same advice for myself that I have given to colleagues over the years. “The second factor in my decision relates to the agenda which I set for myself when I took on the role of CEO. “My goal was always to put the organisation of Maribyrnong City Council on the strongest possible footing, in order to meet the changing needs of our community. “I take pride in the fact that the council has achieved its strongest ever financial position. “Council’s organisation is now delivering an exciting and integrated vision for our city. That vision builds on our authentic strengths; it also incorporates elements of urban revitalisation, seeks new opportunities, and recognises our city as an integral part of inner Melbourne. “I have been thrilled to see progress in many aspects of this vision and I think the time is right for a new CEO to continue on this ambitious pathway.” Mr Haining took over from outgoing CEO Kerry Thompson in October 2010, signing a fiveyear contract. Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles praised Mr Haining for his achievements and performance. “Strong leaders leave a legacy. They leave their organisations, teams, communities and places in better shape than when they started,” Cr Miles said. “This is absolutely the case with the achievements of our outgoing CEO.” The council will now undertake a recruitment process to appoint a new CEO.

People paying tribute to Fiona Warzywoda. 119075

WHAT THEY SAID 

“Grief is grief, there’s not a day when it’s better or when it’s worse, the loss doesn’t change. But I spoke to members of her family and having hundreds of people there showing solidarity, I know the family took some strength from that,” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

“This is the way Sunshine responds, because Sunshine is a good place. It is a good place to live and when something bad happens this is the way people respond; people stand together,” Greens MP Colleen Hartland.

“We are very good at coming together after these tragedies; we are less good at stopping them from happening in the first place. There were 29 domestic homicides in Victoria last year, so unfortunately this is the latest in a long list of tragedies,” Federal Labor Member for Gellibrand Tim Watts.

“This turn-out is an indication that the community has had enough. Our legal system has to be responsive and take violence against women seriously, we need a royal commission into violence against women which would actually look into where the problems lie and why women are dying, one a week, at the hands of men,” Victoria University lecturer and Sexual assaults Counsellor Margherita Windisch.

“I’m 100 per cent against violence against women and I want to send a message that Sunshine is safe,” Sunshine resident Saliah Ali.

“How many more women and children have to die at the hands of an abuser? How many more women and children have to live in fear every day of their lives?” Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Service CEO Annette Gillespie.

Stop the violence By YASEMIN TALAT DOMESTIC violence should be called for what it is, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said last week “violence against women and families”. Violence against women and children was in the spotlight following the fatal stabbing of mother of four Fiona Warzywoda in Sunshine on Wednesday 16 April. Over 600 people from across the Western Suburbs and beyond gathered in Sunshine last week to remember the slain Melton West woman and stand against violence

towards women and children. Roads were blocked off as the community rallied together on the corner of Devonshire and Hampshire roads last Tuesday evening, a week after Ms Warzywoda was allegedly stabbed to death there by her de-facto husband. Residents, witnesses, police, politicians and the family and friends of Ms Warzywoda and other victims of domestic violence gathered to honour innocent lives lost and send the message that this could not keep happening. “It’s not just the justice system which failed Fiona and her children

and her family, I think’s it’s all of us,” Mr Shorten said. “Domestic violence has a lot of different moving parts. It’s not just a women’s issue, but it’s a men’s issue,” he said. “We need a cultural change, we need a resource change, but also the other thing is domestic violence is a national issue, it’s not just a state issue.” Resident Sophie Dutertre, who initiated the vigil and silent protest, said she didn’t want Ms Warzywoda’s death to only be a news item for a day and then disappear from consciousness after her killer was found.

“I care about community, and I care about Sunshine because it’s a place with a strong, vibrant and passionate community,” Ms Dutertre said. “I wanted to show that the community can get together and getting together as a community is very powerful,” she said. Craig McDermott, from Sunshine North, handed himself in to police last Thursday and appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later that night. He was charged with murder and was remanded until August 7.

Changes planned By CHARLENE MACAULAY MARIBYRNONG City Council is looking into an overhaul of its urban planning delegation protocols to allow for more community consultation. Councillor Cameron McDonald put in a notice of motion at last week’s council meeting to revise the current protocols, in particular reducing the number of objections that trigger planning applications being brought before the council chamber. Currently, a planning application must receive 10 ob-

jections before it is reported to the City Development Special Committee. Cr McDonald has proposed that the number of objections be brought down to eight. He referenced the council’s 2013 Annual Community Survey, which saw the council given a score of 2.77 out of 10 for opportunities to participate in the planning approvals process, and 2.26 out of 10 for the effectiveness of community consultation. “Regardless of how we think how well we’re doing it (consultation) ... all the people can

see is buildings going up and parking getting harder, and they don’t know how to respond to it,” Cr McDonald said. Fellow councillor Michael Clarke backed Cr McDonald’s motion, saying it was important for the council to improve its processes. The council will now conduct a review of the urban planning delegation protocols to see if a reduction in objections would be viable. For more information on planning applications and objections, go to www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au

wanted to do,” she said. “I had a big, black typewriter and I used to bang out stories on it. “I loved reading Judy Bloom as a kid, and I still read young adult novels now. “Young adult (novels) is a great world. There’s a lot of material that’s not off limits. “I’ve stolen quite a few of my daughter’s friends’ names for my books.” Ms Weetman writes from a Brunswick studio while her two kids are at school. Ms Weetman will launch The Haunting of Lily Frost on Sunday 4 May at 11am at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre.

WHEN Lily’s parents decide to move to a country town, she is angry and fearful of losing touch with her friends. It doesn’t take long for Lily to discover that she is living in the house of a missing teenager, and finds herself seeing things she thought belonged to the dead. And so begins The Haunting of Lily Frost, the latest offering by author Nova Weetman. Ms Weetman grew up with a love of books and writing, and her work has appeared in various literary magazines including Kill Your Darlings, Island, Tirra Lirra, Wet Ink, Mslexia,

Overland, Island and Cardigan Press. She has also written for Neighbours, children’s television series Pixel Pinkie and Buzz Bumble and short films Ripples and Mr Wasinski’s Song, for which she received an AWGIE nomination for best short screenplay, and the Best Short Film Award from the Melbourne International Film Festival. She has also won the HarperCollins Fellowship and the FAW Award for Best Unpublished Manuscript. This is Ms Weetman’s first young adult novel. “It was the only thing I ever

The Good Oil One of my favourite supermarket products at the moment is flavoured extra virgin olive oil. On those days I just can’t be bothered peeling, chopping and sautéing garlic cloves, I use garlic infused olive oil instead. It’s the best cheat’s way I know to give dishes that lovely, aromatic garlic flavour – minus the elbow work! Lemon infused olive oil is just divine drizzled over pasta (or try dipping some crusty bread into it with a little balsamic vinegar) and I often use chilli infused olive oil to give my salads a little extra kick. Cobram Estate makes a terrific range of infused olive oils with pop-up spouts, which you’ll find at the supermarket. They come in the cutest little bottles

and we always have them on standby at home. But one of my all-time favourite products - which I discovered one year during the Werribee Harvest Picnic at Werribee Mansion – is Toscana lemon infused extra virgin olive oil. It’s sourced from one of Australia’s oldest olive plantations, at the foothills of the Grampians National Park. I have a massive tin of this zingy, zesty oil and I team it with baby capers, chilli and fresh herbs and to make a very simple lemon linguine. Part of the reason I often drop by for breakfast at the Wyndham Cache café is that I love doing a few laps of the Cache Gourmet Store before I leave, searching for hidden foodie treasures! The gourmet sauces, chutneys, home made jams and boiled lollies are so beautifully bottled, it’s a great place to find that elusive gift for foodie friends. High time to take tea

on which to place their cups and saucers. High Tea connotates an idea of elegancy and regal-ness when, in fact, it was an evening meal most often enjoyed about 6pm as labourers and miners returned home. High tea consists of meat and potatoes as well as other foods and tea. It was not exclusively a working class meal but was adopted by all social groups. Families with servants often took high tea on Sundays in order to allow the maids and butlers time to go to church and not worry about cooking an evening meal for the family. Etiquette when attending a tea party begins with greeting and a handshake. After sitting down, guests put their purse on their lap or behind them against the chair back. Unfold napkin on the

lap and leaving temporarily, the napkin should be placed on the chair. Sugar is placed in cup first, then thinly sliced lemon and never milk and lemon together. Milk goes in after tea. The correct order when eating on a tea tray is to eat savouries first, scones next and sweets last. Guests should eat the scones first while they are hot and then move to savouries, then sweets. Scones should be split horizontally with knife, curd and cream is placed on plate. Use the knife to put cream/ curd on each bite and eat with fingers neatly. The spoon is always placed behind cup and not in the cup. It is not customary to put your pinky up as guest should look into the teacup when drinking and never over it.

AN elegant afternoon tea is one of the easiest ways to entertain guests and it’s the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Traditionally, high tea has been a bit of a stuffy affair, but these days the elegant event is a little bit more casual and a lot more fun. Guests nibble on finger sandwiches, delicious cakes, scones and fresh whipped cream while sipping hot beverages, or to liven things up, champagne and enjoying a chat. There are many ideas about tea etiquette and the when and how tea was first made popular in England. When Catherine of Braganza arrived in England to marry Charles II in 1662, she brought with her a casket of tea. She became known as the tea-drinking queen - England’s first. In England tea was generally consumed within a lady’s closet or bedchamber and for a mainly female gathering. In the 18th century it was custom for highborn ladies to receive callers with their morning tea while “abed and barebreasted.” There are various tea times including Low Tea or Afternoon Tea, an afternoon meal including sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, curd, two to three sweets and tea. It is known as “low tea” because guests were seated in low armchairs with low side-tables

By CHARLENE MACAULAY KIDS, it’s time to channel your inner Picasso and get your art on. Maribyrnong City Council is calling for primary school aged children across the City of Maribyrnong to take part in the annual Refugee Week Art Competition. This year’s theme is We Welcome Friends from Around the World. “The Refugee Art Week competition is a fantastic way for students to develop an understanding about the challenges facing refugees and explore ways in which harmony can be created in the classroom and the community,” mayor Grant Miles said. The top 12 pieces of artwork will feature in a travelling exhibition across key sites in the municipality, where the public can vote for their favourite art work. The winning entries will each receive a prize which will be presented to them at their respective school assembly. The competition kicks off the council’s Refugee Week celebrations. The council will celebrate Refugee Week between 15 and 21 June with a number of free public events, including the Refugee Week Film Festival at the Sun Theatre. Entries for the competition close on 30 May. Visit www.maribyrnong. vic.gov.au/refugeeweek for more information.

Stay active, stay healthy FOOTSCRAY North Primary School students like Rishi, pictured, know the importance of being active to stay healthy. The school is one of the top 20 schools across the state to take part in the Premier’s Active April Challenge, a State Government initiative to promote a healthy and active lifestyle and get Victorians more active, more often. The Premier is encouraging Victorians to register for free online and commit to 30 mins of exercise every day during April. Footscray North Primary School received a special visit from Melbourne Vixens player Bianca Chatfield last week as part of the challenge. “We’re challenging Victorians to improve their long-term health and well-being by simply committing to half an hour a day at whatever level of fitness you’re at,” Ms Chatfield said. Participants can log their daily activity with the new Active April app and chart their progress throughout the month. They can also create and join teams, track the progress of team members and discover events that are taking place in their local area. Participants will also be sent weekly email tips on being active and healthy eating. For more information and to register for Premier’s Active April visit www.activeapril. Star… Connecting people with the local sport they love.

Jet makes his mark By ADEM SARICAOGLU THE strong, athletic, attacking halfback flanker has become an essential cog in just about every footy team in the country, no matter the standard or even age group. Down at the Western Jets, Connor Menadue has made the position his own. The 17-year-old has enjoyed a dream start to his top-age year in the TAC Cup, opening the season with back-to-back best-on-ground performances against the Calder Cannons and Sandringham Dragons. In his first four appearances for the season Menadue averaged more than 24 disposals a game and has consistently drawn praise from coach Torin Baker week in, week out. “We’ve mainly played him off the half-back line, that’s where we think he plays his best footy but he’ll be given opportunities to play through the midfield and even up forward,” Baker said. “He’s got some tremendous attributes in that he’s extremely quick, he’s also got very good endurance and the other thing is he’s a very good contested mark so when you add all that in it’s a really nice package that he has.” Menadue himself is happy with how he’s progressed after playing 15 bottom-age games for the Jets in

2013, and hopes his form will warrant selection for Vic Metro later in the year. “I think I’ve had a pretty good, consistent year so far,” Menadue told Star. “I’ve been able to beat my man off the half-back flank every week so far, which has been good and I’ve been able to get the ball which has been good as well.” As a junior down at the Spotswood Football Club Menadue made a name for himself and was plucked from the Woodsmen as a forward, but has since developed into one of the standout running defenders currently going around in the TAC Cup. Like his coaching staff, Menadue now believes his talents are best suited in the back half of the ground, but naturally, he still fancies himself as a dangerous forward option, too. “I think that off the half-back flank so far this year I have been able to show my run and carry and run off half-back, and also I’ve been able to find the ball,” he said. “But I also think if I did start to play more regularly in the midfield I could start to find the ball even more and then hopefully become a bit more dangerous up forward as well and use my speed there. And in the forward line, I played there during my junior career so I sort of know my way around the goal.”

Back for more - the fight is on in title bouts By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOLLOWING two successful Once Upon a Time in Sunshine promotions within the past year, Taylors Hill promoter and undefeated professional fighter Jake Ellis is at it again. Ellis has gathered some of the best fighters from across Melbourne’s West for the 30 May show at Sunshine’s Italia Club, where three titles will be put on the line. The main events will include Altona’s Anthony Buttigieg’s battle with Franco Valenzuela for the light middleweight Victorian belt. Footscray’s Sylvia Scharper will also be in action against Queenslander Kori Farr for the Australian bantamweight title, while Werribee’s Marc Pante will vie for the light heavyweight Victorian title against Joe D’Angelo. “The card speaks for itself,” Ellis said. “I went from basically not having any titles on any of my shows to having three on the same show and an Australian title being one of them. “With my main events both boys are undefeated and the vibe in the crowd is going to be electric. “Pante versus D’Angelo is a fight I’ve been trying to get for about two years now. I just could never seem to get it together.” Pante, 33, is undefeated with three knockouts since going professional and is feeling good a month out from his upcoming bout with D’Angelo.

Marc Pante with trainer Dave Hegarty at the Tarneit Boxing Gym last week. 119108 Picture: LAUREN BROWN “I’m pretty happy with the way I’m going at the moment,” Pante said. “Training’s going well, so hopefully I can get another victory under my belt and stay undefeated. “I’m confident going into every fight. I do all the hard yards and it’s the one per cent things I do in the gym that I think will get me over the line against anyone, really.”

Ellis talked up the bout as Pante’s toughest yet. “I think undeniably it will be Marc’s hardest fight,” Ellis said. “On paper and in reality it is his hardest fight. It’s a fight for the championship of the state so it goes without saying. “Size-wise and even overall frame-wise (D’Angelo’s) very similar to Marc, short and broad and he

has a very extensive kickboxing career and Marc’s also got a kickboxing background as well. “It’s the longest fight he’s ever had. He’s in for an eight-rounder.” Many of the fighters that will take the ring at the Italia Club train under Dave Hegarty out of the Tarneit Boxing Gym, including Dwight ‘The Cowboy’ Ritchie.

FOOTSCRAY fighter Sylvia Scharper is busy preparing for her upcoming Australian bantamweight title bout against Queensland’s Kori Farr at a time women’s boxing has taken great strides. The 31-year-old turned professional two years ago after establishing herself in Thai boxing and has since remained undefeated in three fights, winning two and drawing one. The proud step-mother has to juggle looking after her two step-kids with six days of training a week and once you’ve thrown in her three dogs, two cats, bird and freelance writing gig - Scharper knows a national title would be worth all the effort. “It’s pretty hard,” she admitted. “I started in Thai boxing and then I found Dave Hegarty down at Tarneit Boxing to help with my hand-work. “I never thought I would get to the stage to actually box, let alone pro box and Dave thought I had what it took to jump into pro boxing so I had a very short amateur career of one fight and then went to pro boxing. “I’ve had quite a few Thai fights and been in the ring a long time but in terms of boxing, this is just the start.” Scharper takes on Farr as part of Jake Ellis’ third Once Upon a Time in Sunshine promotion at the Italia Club on 30 May. “She’s got an extensive amateur career and represented Australia in many countries,” Ellis said of Farr. “She hasn’t got an extensive professional career because I know for a fact she was just planning to stay in the amateurs and she’s pretty much come out of retirement for this fight due to her national title being on the line.” Scharper is well aware she’s relatively new to the professional circuit but does feel she has improved enough to contend for the belt. “In the first fights I think just being in the ring and being tough got me through but in the last fight I wanted to show that I could actually box and put combos together and I think I did that so I look forward to stepping it up another level again,” she said. “I’m always looking to improve and obviously with that belt on the line it makes you that little bit hungrier.”

Couple knows it’s all fun and games IT is a big week in the Mark household in Hoppers Crossing with both Russell and Lauryn expected to be named in the team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Russell is an automatic selection as he finished top of the standing but Lauryn is relying on a selection panel to confirm her selection. It will be a whirlwind couple of months ahead as both prepare for their tilt at a medal in July. The pair is keen to avoid the controversy of the London Olympics, where their sleeping arrangements seemed to be of more interest than any competition that was taking place. While Russell has never actually said the ‘R’ word (retire) it does appear that his distinguished career will end with a World Championship event after the games.

The only way is up for lowly Lightning AN INJURY-depleted VU Western Lightning was handed a 20-goal loss in the Victorian Netball League last week. The Lightning fell behind early in the first term against Peninsula Waves and could not recover throughout the match. VU trailed by seven goals at quarter time before the Waves extended the margin to 12 at the main break. The young Lightning squad fought hard in the second half and was able to remain competitive but failed to eat into the margin. Wednesday’s 58-38 win is the

sixth of the season for Waves and sees them move to outright third spot on the VNL ladder. “We have obviously been decimated by injury and we are finding it very hard to rebuild,” VU coach Matt Hills said. “We are basically playing 18-year-olds to cover for senior and experienced players. The last two weeks has demonstrated that. “When you take Brooke Thompson and Fiona Themann out of our defensive end, who were arguably the best defensive combination in the league the last couple of years, that is always going to be tough. “Then we were without Sophie Barr in goals while Sophie Gunn is

returning from illness and injury, it is a tough road.” The Lightning now occupy ninth place on the VNL ladder, only ahead of the winless Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. However, the damage isn’t as bad as it appears with VU part of a logjam of teams with only one game separating fourth and ninth. Despite the uphill battle, Hills is still confident in his team’s ability and pinpointed the club’s next two games against the Sothern Saints and DC North East Blaze as season defining. When VU was closer to full strength earlier in the season, the Lightning won three of its first four

games which included a victory against the Saints by three goals. “We still want to make finals,” Hills said. “We are still working very hard at training and continue to set ourselves high standards. Certainly there is plenty of work to do on the track and there is a lot discussion from the playing group about what we want to do and what we can achieve. “The next two games are critical. We really need to win both to give ourselves the opportunity to play finals. I think that after those two games we will re-asses. If we can win those two games and get back to 6-6 we are still in the fight.”

Bulldogs give their best to the bigger game FOOTSCRAY Hockey Club is wellrenown for producing some of Victoria’s best young talent. Year in year out the Bulldogs are constantly churning out state representative players in numerous age groups and both of the club’s senior men’s and women’s Premier League teams are loaded with local youngsters and juniors that have made their way through the ranks at Footscray. This year Footscray sent 13 of its finest young players to the four under-15s and under-18s national tournaments held all over the country. Included in that group were men’s players Peter Wroblewski, Mitchel Braiden, Oscar Allan and Liam Braithwaite. Bethany Russ, Carly James, Georgia Hopkins, Olivia Colasurdo and Isabella Colasurdo all took part in the women’s teams that played in Melbourne and Hobart. Riley Sutherland, Macey Sutherland, Will Crosbie and James Humphries also got to represent Footscray in the Big V.

THIS is not a criticism directed at the Western Bulldogs but at the AFL and the future fixturing of the Bulldogs. Surely last Sunday’s game between the Bulldogs and Adelaide should have been played at Simonds Stadium in Geelong. It would have had a better financial outcome for the Bulldogs, a better atmosphere for the relatively small crowd. The Bulldogs did not have a President’s Lunch and the three rooms I host pre-game were significantly down in attendance. I am sure the 1.10pm start does not help especially with those supporters involved in junior football. I firmly believe that playing the game in Geelong would not have attracted less spectators than Etihad. The difference in overheads though is huge from what I have been told. I would love Bulldogs supporters to let me know their thoughts on this. I LOVED the fact that Etihad had the roof open last week - from a fresh air, it is an outdoor game perspective - but I wonder how long it will be before we see players wearing some form of sunglasses. The number of times players were shielding their eyes from the sun was most notable and I can hear the clock ticking on this. Some smart person at Oakley or Ray-Ban is probably designing a Geoff Blethyn type tinted spectacles as you are reading this. CONGRATULATIONS to Paul Battaglia on his 300th senior game as a WRFL goal umpire. Paul is one of the great survivors of the competition and a genuine great bloke. I wish him many more days flying the two flags. came fourth, behind Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia. The Bulldogs will be back in Premier League action this Saturday

with a road trip to Doncaster. The women will kick things off at 2pm before the men take the field at 3.30pm at the Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre.

DAVID Parkin was a huge hit with the crowd at the Werribee President’s Dinner last Saturday night at Avalon Airport Oval. The former premiership player and coach told a great story about his first day at Carlton meeting the committee which included the late Bruce Comben. Bruce entered the room and proceeded to cut everyone’s tie off with a pair of scissors. That was David’s introduction to the way things worked at Carlton. John Comben who was at the dinner loved the story, especially the part when David mistakenly referred to Bruce as John’s father. “Jacko” was feeling 30 years younger immediately.
