WYNDHAM residents are set to spend less time waiting to see a doctor after the long-awaited Wyndham Vale GP Super Clinic was officially opened last week. Federal Leader of the Opposition, Bill Shorten, unveiled the new $15 million clinic on Wednesday, claiming it would plug a gap between local GPs and hospitals. “Rather than services following after the community has grown, we have a service here that will grow with the community,” Mr Shorten said. “I live in Moonee Valley. I represent areas of Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Moonee Valley. Those communities would be envious of this facility.” Member for Lalor, Joanne Ryan, said the Super Clinic, which was announced by Julia Gillard when she was Prime Minister, would make it easier for residents to speedily see a doctor. “This is great news for the community of Wyndham Vale. It’s great
news for the region and a muchneeded facility in this area of high growth. “There are approximately 70 babies born each week, 15,000 new residents in the last two years and a population of 200,000 expected by the end of this financial year,” Mr Ryan said. But the Federal Minister for Health, Peter Dutton, threw a dampener on the event by claiming that the new clinic was delivered late and with only one doctor on duty. “It’s clearly a momentous event for Labor when one of their socalled GP ‘super’ clinics finally opens - almost four years after it was promised - with just one doctor,” Mr Dutton said. “That’s truly success on a grand scale for Labor. “Although taxpayers who forked out $15 million for Labor’s Wyndham Vale ‘super’ clinic might tend to see that track record as a grand failure. In fact, they might wonder just how ‘super’ a clinic with one doctor actually is,” he said. Continued page 2

All in for Easter
The
Hillier view KEVIN HILLIER
WYNDHAM’S human residents were not the only ones to receive a gift this Easter. On Easter Sunday animals at Werribee Open Range Zoo enjoyed their own special Easter treats, hunting for brightly coloured pinata eggs and tucking in to homemade hot cross buns. Created by Zoo volunteers, the treats were part of the daily enrichment program at the zoo, which includes a range of activities and items to provide variety and encourage problem-solving and foraging behaviours. Each species is different and has its own enrichment program supported by the zoo’s volunteers, who make, grow, cook and build items to the specification of keepers and vets. On Sunday, the zoo’s western lowland gorillas, Motaba, Yakini and Ganyeka enjoyed their own Easter egg hunt as they broke into their pinata eggs to find hidden treats including sultanas and popcorn.
Concerns for kids YOUR feedback from my comments re: smoking, bad parenting and foul language nearly sent my email into meltdown last week. Thank you for your comments, which included the following. Smokers think they have a God-given right to puff where and when they like and when challenged, proclaim they are like drinkers. As many readers pointed out, when you drink you drink alone (not always a good thing), but when you smoke you invade everyone’s space. How can smokers not see that? One reader told me of her experience in a cinema, where one parent apologised to her for the behaviour of her children. She was actually upset by the vile language used by the other parent to the children before anything had actually happened. MAY is Cystic Fibrosis awareness month and this really hits close to home with the diagnosis of Brody McPherson. Brody is five months old and you can only imagine the effect this has had on his immediate family and friends. A Trivia Night has been organised to raise funds at Hotel 520 on Friday 30 May, from 7pm. They will have some superb auction items and raffle prizes plus a great night of entertainment with the Trivia competition. If any local business people would like to be involved please contact teambrody@outlook.com 402308-JF20-9

THANK you for highlighting the need for better safety for the residents of Werribee. On the day of the incident, I was happy to see that members of the police force understood my concerns and admitted that a lack of resources had hindered their ability to respond to every situation. Imagine then, to my surprise, that the visit to the police station the next day left me even more troubled than the actual incident itself. At the police station, I was told it could take up to four weeks to collect fingerprints, and get a sketch artist to complete a profile of the intruder. Furthermore, I was told the home invasion was one of five incidents in the same suburb at the time, and that only one police van was available to patrol the entire suburb. It was only through discussions with a constable at Werribee police station that fingerprints were taken in four days. While I understand that our city’s access to resources is limited, I ask that action after responding be swift and clinical. I would like to see clear communications from the police department on incident response and resolution timeframes. This will help our residents better understand that their safety is an ongoing concern, and that their representatives continually focus on keeping Wyndham secure. Cr Gautam Gupta, Hoppers Crossing.

The CEO of ISIS, the company that will be running the clinic, Terry O’Brien, told Star that it was, in fact, delivered three years after they received the contract from the Commonwealth to construct it. “Until we get a contract to construct, we don’t start build-
ing,” Mr O’Brien said. “Sure, we only have one doctor, but that’s because we’ve only been open for a week or two and we don’t have the demand for more doctors yet, but we do have a plan to go to 12 doctors. “Until we get to 140 appointments a week, we don’t
need a bunch of doctors standing around. “There might be some truth behind what Mr Dutton is saying about super clinics in general, but the specifics about ours are incorrect.” The Wyndham Vale GP Super Clinic is located at 150 Ballan Rd, Wyndham Vale.

Fire rips through fish ‘n’ chips shop A new star in and contained to the room of origin, further time was then spent removing plaster from the ceiling and using a thermal imaging camera until all hot spots were located and extinguished,” First Lt Wells said. “The estimated damage was $50,000 and the cause was an electrical fault as determined by a CFA fire investigator. “The early discovery of the fire
by the passing police patrol, the rapid response and aggressive fire fight carried out by Werribee volunteers supported by crews from Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook considerably reduced the fire damage to the shop. “Although, the fire could not have happened at a worse time for the owners as they had just received all the fish for Good Friday.”
Stop the violence WHAT THEY SAID
“This is the way Sunshine responds, because Sunshine is a good place. It is a good place to live and when something bad happens this is the way people respond; people stand together,” Greens MP Colleen Hartland.
“We are very good at coming together after these tragedies; we are less good at stopping them from happening in the first place. There were 29 domestic homicides in Victoria last year, so unfortunately this is the latest in a long list of tragedies,” Federal Labor Member for Gellibrand Tim Watts.

Resident Sophie Dutertre, who initiated the vigil and silent protest, said she didn’t want Ms Warzywoda’s death to only be a news item for a day and then disappear from consciousness after her killer was found. “I care about community, and I care about Sunshine because it’s a place with a strong, vibrant and passionate community,” Ms Dutertre said. “I wanted to show that the community can get together and getting together as a community is very powerful,” she said. Craig McDermott, from Sunshine North, handed himself in to police last Thursday and appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later that night. He was charged with murder and was remanded until August 7.

“This turn-out is an indication that the community has had enough. Our legal system has to be responsive and take violence against women seriously, we need a royal commission into violence against women which would actually look into where the problems lie and why women are dying, one a week, at the hands of men,” Victoria University lecturer and Sexual assaults Counsellor Margherita Windisch.
“I’m 100 per cent against violence against women and I want to send a message that Sunshine is safe,” Sunshine resident Saliah Ali.
“How many more women and children have to die at the hands of an abuser? How many more women and children have to live in fear every day of their lives?” Women’s Domestic Violence Crisis Service CEO Annette Gillespie.

DOMESTIC violence should be called for what it is, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said last week - “violence against women and families”. Violence against women and children was in the spotlight following the fatal stabbing of mother of four Fiona Warzywoda in Sunshine on Wednesday 16 April. Over 600 people from across the Western Suburbs and beyond gathered in Sunshine last week to remember the slain Melton West woman and stand against violence towards women and children. Roads were blocked off as the community rallied together on the corner of Devonshire and Hampshire roads last Tuesday evening, a week after Ms Warzywoda was
allegedly stabbed to death there by her de-facto husband. Residents, witnesses, police, politicians and the family and friends of Ms Warzywoda and other victims of domestic violence gathered to honour innocent lives lost and send the message that this could not keep happening. “It’s not just the justice system which failed Fiona and her children and her family, I think’s it’s all of us,” Mr Shorten said. “Domestic violence has a lot of different moving parts. It’s not just a women’s issue, but it’s a men’s issue,” he said. “We need a cultural change, we need a resource change, but also the other thing is domestic violence is a national issue, it’s not just a state issue.”

“Grief is grief, there’s not a day when it’s better or when it’s worse, the loss doesn’t change. But I spoke to members of her family and having hundreds of people there showing solidarity, I know the family took some strength from that,” Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

A WERRIBEE business received significant damage during one of the busiest times of the year after a fire tore through it. About 3.50am on Thursday 16 April Werribee Fire Brigade was paged for an undefined fire on Watton St near Wedge St. The crew of a patrolling police unit had noticed
smoke coming from Kippers fish and chip shop. Werribee Fire Brigade volunteers responded along with the Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook fire brigades. First Lieutenant Darryl Wells said the first crews to arrive could see flames coming from the roof. “Within 15 minutes of arrival, the crews had the fire under control

Made for walkin’ By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM Council has launched a new campaign to encourage parents to walk their children to school, with a little help from one student in particular. Lachlan, from Iramoo Primary School, won a recent competition to design a poster to promote the Make Every Day Walk to School Day campaign as part of the VicHealth’s 2013 ‘Walk to School’ initiative. His winning image features a drawing of his daily journey to school. The campaign encourages parents to walk their children to school, when possible, to get some exercise and relieve congestion on the roads surrounding our schools. Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough said the campaign had many benefits. “Not only will our schoolchildren gain an advantage from walking to school rather than sitting in the car, but their parents and the wider community will also benefit,” Cr Fairclough said. “In addition to improving their physical health by getting some exercise, it also gives parents more time to talk to their children and strengthen their relationship. “Walking to school will also decrease the amount of congestion on our roads at school times, which is one of the objectives of our Get Wyndham Moving congestion campaign. “Lachlan’s winning design is a great illustration of all the things children experience on

Food revolution hits our schools By XAVIER SMERDON

‘Equine triathlon’ a drawcard By XAVIER SMERDON THIS Queen’s Birthday weekend, the Melbourne International Horse Trials (MIHT) will welcome thousands of spectators to the stunning surrounds of the Werribee Park precinct to showcase the very best in Australian horsemanship. Horses and riders will compete for national and international representation, providing a true spectacle for all ages.
Outdoor enthusiasts can bring the family and join friends as part of a long weekend of equestrian excellence in what is best described as an “equine triathlon”. Dressage takes place on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June, cross-country on Sunday 8 June and the final, deciding phase, show jumping will be held on Monday 9 June. A spokesperson for the event said there would be something
for everyone in the Werribee Park precinct from fine food to great competition and beautiful scenery. Held in the grounds of historic Werribee Mansion, the event takes in the Victoria State Rose Garden, Werribee Open Range Zoo and the Werribee Park Polo Fields. More information on the MIHT can be found by visiting www.miht.com.au
WITH the local Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen in full swing, local retailer The Good Guys Hoppers Crossing is calling on local students to get involved. Jamie’s Food Revolution Day will be held on 16 May and students have the chance to win an appliance refresh pack for their school canteen. With the focus of this year’s Food Revolution Day being to ‘get kids excited about food’, the local retailer believes that the logical step is to help provide schools with the additional opportunity to have new, workable, kid-friendly appliances available in their school canteen that encourage the preparation of common lunches from scratch. “The pack contains everything a student needs to make a delicious, healthy and nutritious lunch using commonly available ingredients,” said Fab DeCesaris, proprietor of The Good Guys Hoppers Crossing. “We have put together three items that will help students create fun and colourful fruit and vegetable drinks, nutritionpacked, Jamie Oliver-inspired smoothies and the old favourite sanga press because let’s face it, everything tastes better toasted.” The pack, which contains a brand new blender, juicer and sandwich press from The Good Guys Hoppers Crossing, will

THOUSANDS of people across Melbourne’s West paid tribute to our fallen service men and women last week as Dawn Services were held across the country. As the sun seeped through the morning sky, crowds descended upon memorial sites to remember those who have given their lives in service of the nation. They also remembered those who continue to be deployed in different parts of the globe. It was a time for all – young and old – to remember the Anzac spirit. The Dawn Services were followed by gunfire breakfasts where mates and their families gathered to enjoy a meal and drink together. Picture: DAMJAN JANEVSKI

AN elegant afternoon tea is one of the easiest ways to entertain guests and it’s the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Traditionally, high tea has been a bit of a stuffy affair, but these days the elegant event is a little bit more casual and a lot more fun. Guests nibble on finger sandwiches, delicious cakes, scones and fresh whipped cream while sipping hot beverages, or to liven things up, champagne and enjoying a chat. There are many ideas about tea etiquette and the when and how tea was first made popular in England. When Catherine of Braganza arrived in England to marry Charles II in 1662, she brought with her a casket of tea. She became known as the tea-drinking queen - England’s first. In England tea was generally consumed within a lady’s closet or bedchamber and for a mainly female gathering. In the 18th century it was custom for highborn ladies to receive callers with their morning tea while “abed and barebreasted.” There are various tea times including Low Tea or Afternoon Tea, an afternoon meal including sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, curd, two to three sweets and tea. It is known as “low tea” because guests were seated in low armchairs with low side-tables
on which to place their cups and saucers. High Tea connotates an idea of elegancy and regal-ness when, in fact, it was an evening meal most often enjoyed about 6pm as labourers and miners returned home. High tea consists of meat and potatoes as well as other foods and tea. It was not exclusively a working class meal but was adopted by all social groups. Families with servants often took high tea on Sundays in order to allow the maids and butlers time to go to church and not worry about cooking an evening meal for the family. Etiquette when attending a tea party begins with greeting and a handshake. After sitting down, guests put their purse on their lap or behind them against the chair back. Unfold napkin on the
lap and leaving temporarily, the napkin should be placed on the chair. Sugar is placed in cup first, then thinly sliced lemon and never milk and lemon together. Milk goes in after tea. The correct order when eating on a tea tray is to eat savouries first, scones next and sweets last. Guests should eat the scones first while they are hot and then move to savouries, then sweets. Scones should be split horizontally with knife, curd and cream is placed on plate. Use the knife to put cream/ curd on each bite and eat with fingers neatly. The spoon is always placed behind cup and not in the cup. It is not customary to put your pinky up as guest should look into the teacup when drinking and never over it.

BAKERS DELIGHT stores across the Western Suburbs are turning pink in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia. From now until 14 May, the bakers will be busy baking up the pink finger bun for this year’s Pink Bun Campaign. The annual fund-raising campaign will see around 600 Bakers Delight bakeries donate 100 per cent of the sale of pink finger buns to BCNA. “It is a really important campaign that everyone gets behind,” said Sunshine Bak-
ers Delight Franchisee Colene Bonello. “So many people are affected by or touched by breast cancer, and it doesn’t matter your age,” she said. “I know personally my mother had breast cancer and it’s very important to me,” she said. “She was diagnosed when she was 80,” she said. Ms Bonello, and her husband George Bonello, looked forward to the next few weeks and applauded the community’s generosity. The money raised by Bakers

The Good Oil One of my favourite supermarket products at the moment is flavoured extra virgin olive oil. On those days I just can’t be bothered peeling, chopping and sautéing garlic cloves, I use garlic infused olive oil instead. It’s the best cheat’s way I know to give dishes that lovely, aromatic garlic flavour – minus the elbow work! Lemon infused olive oil is just divine drizzled over pasta (or try dipping some crusty bread into it with a little balsamic vinegar) and I often use chilli infused olive oil to give my salads a little extra kick. Cobram Estate makes a terrific range of infused olive oils with pop-up spouts, which you’ll find at the supermarket. They come in the cutest little bottles

and we always have them on standby at home. But one of my all-time favourite products - which I discovered one year during the Werribee Harvest Picnic at Werribee Mansion – is Toscana lemon infused extra virgin olive oil. It’s sourced from one of Australia’s oldest olive plantations, at the foothills of the Grampians National Park. I have a massive tin of this zingy, zesty oil and I team it with baby capers, chilli and fresh herbs and to make a very simple lemon linguine. Part of the reason I often drop by for breakfast at the Wyndham Cache café is that I love doing a few laps of the Cache Gourmet Store before I leave, searching for hidden foodie treasures! The gourmet sauces, chutneys, home made jams and boiled lollies are so beautifully bottled, it’s a great place to find that elusive gift for foodie friends. Transport champion Edi De Pellegrin with the new billboard. 119760 Picture: JOE MASTROIANNI
Traffic in a jam By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM Council has made the next move in its transport and traffic congestion campaign to Get Wyndham Moving, with the erection of a new billboard. The billboard is on the Princes Freeway city bound, near the Western Ring Rd exit and was installed last week. It features the Get Wyndham Moving website and logo and the slogan “Make Your Move”encouraging residents to join the campaign and the State and Federal governments to commit funding to transport infrastructure. Councillor Glenn Goodfellow said the billboard would
target commuters stuck in traffic. “We have had some fantastic community support so far following the campaign launch and the Race to the City and it’s vital that we keep that momentum going,” Cr Goodfellow said. “While we await the outcome of the State and Federal budgets, we want to encourage as many residents as possible to get behind the campaign by signing our petition, joining up to our Facebook page or visiting our website for more information.” “Placing this billboard on the Princes Freeway allows us to get our message out to the
thousands of residents who are stuck in traffic each morning on their way to work. “Our statistics show that one in four of our working residents spends 20 days per year stuck in traffic - that equates to what most people take each year in annual leave. This was highlighted by our recent Race to the City, which showed it was faster to cycle than drive into Federation Square from Wyndham, taking cars up to one hour and 40 minutes, compared to one hour on a bicycle.” For more information on the Get Wyndham Moving campaign or to get involved, visit www.getwyndhammoving. com.au
Stick with this advice By XAVIER SMERDON WYNDHAM drivers will have a better idea about what to do if they are involved in a car crash thanks to the Wyndham Humanitarian Network’s Had a Crash campaign. Tarneit MP Tim Pallas launched the campaign at Wayaperri House recently. “This campaign highlights the importance of knowing what to do in the event of an accident, but will also serve as an important reminder for people to drive safely - particularly over the Easter long weekend,” Mr Pallas said. “Having a crash is stressful and it can be difficult to know exactly what to do,” Jennie Barrera, chairwoman of the Wyndham Humanitarian Network, said. “The Wyndham Humanitarian Network has designed a Had a Crash car sticker to remind drivers of their obligations following an accident.” Wyndham Legal Service lawyer Simone King said the campaign would help people be better informed. “Unfortunately, many people don’t know what information to exchange and what to do when they are involved in an accident - we see this all too often at the Wyndham Legal Service’s Motor Vehicle Accident Clinic,” Ms King said. Victoria Police Leading Senior Constable and multicultural liaison officer Richard Dove said motor vehicle accidents was an area of the law that drivers from newly arrived
Tarneit MP Tim Pallas and the crash stickers. 118758 communities could easily find themselves in trouble with police through not knowing the correct procedure. “This can be quite devastating when a newly arrived migrant discovers that they have not only had a crash, but are now subject to charges which could see them heavily fined or facing a magistrate,” he said. “This sticker, I believe, will alleviate a lot of unnecessary worry and hardship on an already disadvantaged people,
and assist the wider community through having a more informed migrant population.” The free stickers are available in English, Karen, Burmese and Arabic and can be collected from Wyndham Legal Service. The Wyndham Legal Service Motor Vehicle Accident Clinic is held every Monday from 10am to noon at the WLS Office 10/2-14 Station Place, Werribee.

The fight is on By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOLLOWING two successful Once Upon a Time in Sunshine promotions within the past year, Taylors Hill promoter and undefeated professional fighter Jake Ellis is at it again. Ellis has gathered some of the best fighters from across Melbourne’s West for the 30 May show at Sunshine’s Italia Club, where three titles will be put on the line. The main events will include Altona’s Anthony Buttigieg’s battle with Franco Valenzuela for the light middleweight Victorian belt. Footscray’s Sylvia Scharper will also be in action against Queenslander Kori Farr for the Australian bantamweight title, while Werribee’s Marc Pante will vie for the light heavyweight Victorian title against Joe D’Angelo. “The card speaks for itself,” Ellis said. “I went from basically not having any titles on any of my shows to having three on the same show and an Australian title being one of them. “With my main events both boys are undefeated and the vibe in the crowd is going to be electric. “Pante versus D’Angelo is a fight I’ve been trying to get for about two years now. I just could never seem to get it together.” Pante, 33, is undefeated with three knockouts since going professional and is feeling good a month out from his upcoming bout with D’Angelo.

“I’m pretty happy with the way I’m going at the moment,” Pante said. “Training’s going well, so hopefully I can get another victory under my belt and stay undefeated. “I’m confident going into every fight. I do all the hard yards and it’s the one per cent things I do in the gym that I think will get me over the line against anyone, really.”
Ellis talked up the bout as Pante’s toughest yet. “I think undeniably it will be Marc’s hardest fight,” Ellis said. “On paper and in reality it is his hardest fight. It’s a fight for the championship of the state so it goes without saying. “Size-wise and even overall frame-wise (D’Angelo’s) very simi-
lar to Marc, short and broad and he has a very extensive kickboxing career and Marc’s also got a kickboxing background as well. “It’s the longest fight he’s ever had. He’s in for an eight-rounder.” Many of the fighters that will take the ring at the Italia Club train under Dave Hegarty out of the Tarneit Boxing Gym, including Dwight ‘The Cowboy’ Ritchie.
Sylvia’s a champ in the school of hard knocks By ADEM SARICAOGLU FOOTSCRAY fighter Sylvia Scharper is busy preparing for her upcoming Australian bantamweight title bout against Queensland’s Kori Farr at a time women’s boxing has taken great strides. The 31-year-old turned professional two years ago after establishing herself in Thai boxing and has since remained undefeated in three fights, winning two and drawing one. The proud step-mother has to juggle looking after her two stepkids with six days of training a week and once you’ve thrown in her three dogs, two cats, bird and freelance writing gig - Scharper knows a national title would be worth all the effort. “It’s pretty hard,” she admitted. “I started in Thai boxing and then I found Dave Hegarty down at Tarneit Boxing to help with my handwork. “I never thought I would get to the stage to actually box, let alone pro box and Dave thought I had what it took to jump into pro boxing so I had a very short amateur career of one fight and then went to pro boxing. “I’ve had quite a few Thai fights and been in the ring a long time but
Sylvia Scharper will fight for the Australian bantamweight title in May. 119108 Picture: LAUREN BROWN in terms of boxing, this is just the start.” Scharper takes on Farr as part of Jake Ellis’ third Once Upon a Time in Sunshine promotion at the Italia Club on 30 May. “She’s got an extensive amateur career and represented Australia in many countries,” Ellis said of Farr. “She hasn’t got an extensive professional career because I know
for a fact she was just planning to stay in the amateurs and she’s pretty much come out of retirement for this fight due to her national title being on the line.” Scharper is well aware she’s relatively new to the professional circuit but does feel she has improved enough to contend for the belt. “In the first fights I think just being in the ring and being tough got

me through but in the last fight I wanted to show that I could actually box and put combos together and I think I did that so I look forward to stepping it up another level again,” she said. “I’m always looking to improve and obviously with that belt on the line it makes you that little bit hungrier.”

shorts Sawers to lead whistle blowers AUSTRALIAN Football Hall of Famer Rowan Sawers has decided to give a little back to the game that’s given him everything and taken him all over the globe. The former AFL umpire was earlier this month appointed the Essendon District Football League’s umpires coach in a bid to help boost the appeal at a time many community leagues are struggling for numbers and forced to appoint club umpires for numerous junior and senior fixtures. “There’s a lot of experience to be gained and not just in football but life skills as well,” Sawers said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to get into the AFL and get a grand final and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame was just a thrill and something I never even thought of, so footy’s been great. “It’s taken me around the world and coming to the EDFL gives me the opportunity to put back and with the knowledge I’ve learnt, I really want to put back into junior football. “I’ve got a real passion to see umpiring grow at every level possible and this gives me an opportunity to put back my knowledge and my experience and hopefully help develop this list (of EDFL umpires) into the best metropolitan list.” Since taking the new gig Sawers has been on-hand to witness the standard of umpiring within the EDFL ranks and is genuinely impressed, telling Star the standard has been raised significantly at community level in recent years. “I saw Maribyrnong Park and Avondale Heights and it was a terrific game of football that was well-umpired,” he said. “There’s lots of things that umpires need to take into account and in the two-umpire system they cover about 13km, they make about 3000 decisions and most of those are not to blow the whistle. “And certainly from what I saw, I’m really excited to be working with this group and I think it’s just a real opportunity to help develop and help grow and hopefully retain umpires on this panel.” EDFL general manager Marc Turri said the league is always looking for more umpires in the field, boundary and goals, but was also pleased to say EDFL umpires are among the highest paid in community football. Turri and Sawers have encouraged people interested in taking up umpiring to contact the league. FOOTSCRAY Hockey Club is well-renown for producing some of Victoria’s best young talent. Year in year out the Bulldogs are constantly churning out state representative players in numerous age groups and both of the club’s senior men’s and women’s Premier League teams are loaded with local youngsters and juniors that have made their way through the ranks at Footscray. This year Footscray sent 13 of its finest young players to the four under-15s and under-18s national tournaments held all over the country. Included in that group were men’s players Peter Wroblewski, Mitchel Braiden, Oscar Allan and Liam Braithwaite. Bethany Russ, Carly James, Georgia Hopkins, Olivia Colasurdo and Isabella Colasurdo all took part in the women’s teams that played in Melbourne and Hobart. Riley Sutherland, Macey Sutherland, Will Crosbie and James Humphries also got to represent Footscray in the Big V.

Jet makes his mark By ADEM SARICAOGLU
KEVIN HILLIER
Couple knows it’s all fun and games IT is a big week in the Mark household in Hoppers Crossing with both Russell and Lauryn expected to be named in the team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Russell is an automatic selection as he finished top of the standing but Lauryn is relying on a selection panel to confirm her selection. It will be a whirlwind couple of months ahead as both prepare for their tilt at a medal in July. The pair is keen to avoid the controversy of the London Olympics, where their sleeping arrangements seemed to be of more interest than any competition that was taking place. While Russell has never actually said the ‘R’ word (retire) it does appear that his distinguished career will end with a World Championship event after the games. DAVID Parkin was a huge hit with the crowd at the Werribee President’s Dinner last Saturday night at Avalon Airport Oval. The former premiership player and coach told a great story about his first day at Carlton meeting the committee which included the late Bruce Comben. Bruce entered the room and proceeded to cut everyone’s tie off with a pair of scissors. That was David’s introduction to the way things worked at Carlton. John Comben who was at the dinner loved the story, especially the part when David mistakenly referred to Bruce as John’s father. “Jacko” was feeling 30 years younger immediately.

The only way is up for injured Lightning By LIAM TWOMEY AN INJURY depleted VU Western Lightning was handed a 20-goal loss in the Victorian Netball League last week. The Lightning fell behind early in the first term against Peninsula Waves and could not recover throughout the match. VU trailed by seven goals at quarter time before the Waves extended the margin to 12 at the main break. The young Lightning squad fought hard in the second half and was able to remain competitive but failed to eat into the margin. Wednesday’s 58-38 win is the sixth of the season for Waves and sees them move to outright third spot on the VNL ladder. “We have obviously been decimated by injury and we are finding it very hard to rebuild,” VU coach Matt Hills said. “We are basically playing 18-yearolds to cover for senior and experienced players. The last two weeks has demonstrated that. “When you take Brooke Thompson and Fiona Themann out of our defensive end, who were arguably the best defensive combination in the league the last couple of years, that is always going to be tough. “Then we were without Sophie
Doghouse
Barr in goals while Sophie Gunn is returning from illness and injury, it is a tough road.” The Lightning now occupy ninth place on the VNL ladder, only ahead of the winless Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. However, the damage isn’t as bad as it appears with VU part of a logjam of teams with only one game separating fourth and ninth. Despite the uphill battle, Hills is still confident in his team’s ability and pinpointed the club’s next two games against the Sothern Saints and DC North East Blaze as season defining. When VU was closer to full strength earlier in the season, the Lightning won three of its first four games which included a victory against the Saints by three goals. “We still want to make finals,” Hills said. “We are still working very hard at training and continue to set ourselves high standards. Certainly there is plenty of work to do on the track and there is a lot discussion from the playing group about what we want to do and what we can achieve. “The next two games are critical. We really need to win both to give ourselves the opportunity to play finals. I think that after those two games we will re-asses. If we can win those two games and get back to 6-6 we are still in the fight.”
THIS is not a criticism directed at the Western Bulldogs but at the AFL and the future fixturing of the Bulldogs. Surely last Sunday’s game between the Bulldogs and Adelaide should have been played at Simonds Stadium in Geelong. It would have had a better financial outcome for the Bulldogs, a better atmosphere for the relatively small crowd. The Bulldogs did not have a President’s Lunch and the three rooms I host pre-game were significantly down in attendance. I am sure the 1.10pm start does not help especially with those supporters involved in junior football. I firmly believe that playing the game in Geelong would not have attracted less spectators than Etihad. The difference in overheads though is huge from what I have been told. I would love Bulldogs supporters to let me know their thoughts on this. I LOVED the fact that Etihad had the roof open last week - from a fresh air, it is an outdoor game perspective - but I wonder how long it will be before we see players wearing some form of sunglasses. The number of times players were shielding their eyes from the sun was most notable and I can hear the clock ticking on this. Some smart person at Oakley or Ray-Ban is probably designing a Geoff Blethyn type tinted spectacles as you are reading this. CONGRATULATIONS to Paul Battaglia on his 300th senior game as a WRFL goal umpire. Paul is one of the great survivors of the competition and a genuine great bloke. I wish him many more days flying the two flags. THE strong, athletic, attacking half-back flanker has become an essential cog in just about every footy team in the country, no matter the standard or even age group. Down at the Western Jets, Connor Menadue has made the position his own. The 17-year-old has enjoyed a dream start to his top-age year in the TAC Cup, opening the season with back-to-back best-on-ground performances against the Calder Cannons and Sandringham Dragons. In his first four appearances for the season Menadue averaged more than 24 disposals a game and has consistently drawn praise from coach Torin Baker week in, week out. “We’ve mainly played him off the half-back line, that’s where we think he plays his best footy but he’ll be given opportunities to play through the midfield and even up forward,” Baker said. “He’s got some tremendous attributes in that he’s extremely quick, he’s also got very good endurance and the other thing is he’s a very good contested mark so when you add all that in it’s a really nice package that he has.” Menadue himself is happy with how he’s progressed after playing 15 bottom-age games for the Jets in 2013, and hopes his form will warrant selection for Vic Metro later in the year. “I think I’ve had a pretty good, consistent year so far,” Menadue told Star. “I’ve been able to beat my man off the half-back flank every week so far, which has been good and I’ve been able to get the ball which has been good as well.” As a junior down at the Spotswood Football Club Menadue made a name for himself and was plucked from the Woodsmen as a forward, but has since developed into one of the standout running defenders currently going around in the TAC Cup. Like his coaching staff, Menadue now believes his talents are best suited in the back half of the ground, but naturally, he still fancies himself as a dangerous forward option, too. “I think that off the half-back flank so far this year I have been able to show my run and carry and run off half-back, and also I’ve been able to find the ball,” he said. “But I also think if I did start to play more regularly in the midfield I could start to find the ball even more and then hopefully become a bit more dangerous up forward as well and use my speed there. And in the forward line, I played there during my junior career so I sort of know my way around the goal.”

Lancer is a real legend FOR more than 20 years, Lancer has been one of Australia’s favourite small cars due to its stylish design, modern technology and legendary performance. With a wide range of models, including sedans and hatches, there’s a Lancer to suit every individual need. Split fold rear seats, Smart Key and a spacious cabin setting makes the Lancer range a pleasure to drive with everything designed conveniently around the fingertips. This car has the latest handsfree phone system technology with Bluetooth phone connectivity to make and receive calls at the touch of a button. A rain sensor in the VRX model automatically detects moisture on the windscreen and will activate the wipers at the appropriate speed. Sensors automatically switch on the headlamps when it gets dark or when the vehicle is travelling through a tunnel.
This car is powered by the latest in engine technology, Mitsubishi’s Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control MIVEC 2.0 litre petrol in ES and LX models or 2.4L petrol in VRX. MIVEC minimises fuel consumption without sacrificing power and performance. Continuously Variable Transmission offers infinitely variable gear ratios that allow the engine to always operate at optimum RPM, irrespective of the vehicle’s speed. This maximises power and economy helping to ensure a smooth, stable ride with seamless gear changes. Sports Mode allows effortless switching between the ease of a CVT automatic and the control of a manual transmission without a clutch. Lancer has a long list of advanced safety features, but it’s the way they all work together that makes Lancer such a safe vehicle for the driver and occupants.
Lancer has seven SRS airbags, side airbags to protect occupants against thorax injuries, curtain airbags to give protection from side collisions and driver and front passenger airbags and a driver knee airbag for protection in head-on collisions. A reversing camera appears automatically whenever reverse gear is engaged. The Mitsubishi Multi Communication System available on VRX will display the rear view camera’s view on its screen. While on ES and LX, it appears on the audio system display. Either way, when combined with reverse sensors, parking the Lancer is easy. Visit Werribee Mitsubishi to test drive this vehicle at 17-25 Heaths Rd, Hoppers Crossing, on Monday to Saturday, 8.30am-6pm, Sundays 10am-5pm, or call 9741 5300 for more information.
